RDP connections for Server Foundation or Essentials?

Question: RDP connections for Server Foundation or Essentials?

I'm looking for a solution for a small business here in town, they are getting to the point where they need to have a small server to centrally locate files, printers, and so on. There are only 3 computers in the office so I'm thinking about going with either Server 2012 Foundation or Essentials.

However they need to be able to use the Remote Desktop client on their Windows 7 workstations to connect to the server from time to time. Does either of these versions of Server allow remote desktop connections and if so how many at one time?

Preferred Solution: RDP connections for Server Foundation or Essentials?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: RDP connections for Server Foundation or Essentials?

I believe Foundation is pretty much like 2008R2 and allows 1 RDP connection for admin purposes
Essentials is more like SBS and allows 1 admin RDP connection as well.
Essentials is limited in certain functions and hardware

I can't get ie 10 or 11 to install on windows server 2008 foundation r2 64 sp1. I've verified all prerecs have been installed but still get the 9c59 error.  I also checked the graphics card, it is not a AMD, its a Matrox which wasn't listed as one
that needed the driver updated for ie 10.   It seems that my computer has tried to update since 2013 but has never been able to due to various codes. I am pressed to make this change as some of our programs no longer support ie9.  Does anyone have
a process for this?   Thanks in advance!

I was reading this Paul Thurrott interview (good article btw) and he mentioned a version of Server 2008 called Foundation Server that is essential just Server 08 without Hyper-V that is designed to be run as a workstation OS. I can't seem to find any concrete information on this.

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I have never heard of it before. Google isn't turning up a specific Server 08 product.

We recently purchased Win Server 2012 Foundation OEM HP, but we found out that some features we need are not working and need to downgrade to 2008 R2 foundation server.

Is that possible with OEM license?

I would like to hear from anyone that has considered using or is currently using Windows Server 2008 R2 Foundation. Pros, Cons, etc

I am looking to migrate away from Windows Home Server and Foundation looks very attractive, mainly because of the price point. However, I have alot of unanswered questions, and there are very few "reviews" out there.

Some questions i have are:

What is the cost to upgrade to the standard edition? I would expect there to be a discount because you already dished out $200+ for foundation.
Its OEM, so does that mean it has the same licensing scheme as my windows 7 Professional OEM? No Microsoft support and intended for resale/system builder.
Its limited to 1 physical CPU, but can I use a dual socket motherboard with only 1 CPU installed? With the intention of upgrading to the Standard edition at a later date and installing a second CPU.
I heard Foundation doesn't support any virtualization. I was hoping to get atleast 1 virtual machine running. Will I need to upgrade to standard edition or are there alternative solutions to virtualization on foundation?

If you happen to know the answer to any of these questions or simply have some good feedback please let me know.

Server 2012 was released to TN today in case you didn't notice.

I have yet to be able to find a full feature list for Server 2012 Foundation.

The one on Wiki doesn't list the features I'm curious about, namely drive pooling and client backup.

I was hoping foundation has these due to the stupid mandatory ActiveDirectory configuration in Essentials.

It does NOT appear Standard has Client Backup. Weird.

Answer:Full Specs for Server 2012 Foundation ?

Pooling is in all versions and client backup is only in Essentials I believe.

Anyone actually have this or know anyone who does? I saw it on Dell's website as an available OS for their entry level servers. It was only $259 in their configurator. I've read up on it but can't any OEM distributors that sell it.

I believe the appropriate setting is ten but often when I reboot the setting gets changed which results in slower internet downloading speed. How do I keep the setting the same? I also have IE7Pro on my computer and that is set to ten connections per server. Hope you can help me out--Cherise

I'm looking at a good software firewall, a good anti-virus program, but I'm curious on what else one should be looking for. I'm very new to this, and I'm learning a lot each and every day, but I hope that I can get a little guidance on this from fellow forumers, thanks

So, I am trying to setup Windows Server 2012 Essentials. I have it installed, and it boots to the dashboard, and starts the"Set Up Windows Server 2012 Essentials" dialog, it leads to "Error occurred during Installation" and says to reboot, or save logs, I have a copy of the logs files, if anyone would like them.

I keep getting a 153 error on disk 3. How do I determine which disk is 3? I have 3 new 4TB drives, does this mean one of them is bad? I have like 70,000 of these errors now and smart tools etc all say all of my disks are healthy. I'm non longer able to stream most stuff from the server, and writing to this disk seems to be causing this error.

All I could find is this when searching for the error (Same error I am getting only I have it like 70k times over a few days).

Answer:More Windows Server Essentials Problems

Looks like it's time to replace the drive. As for which one it is; this is why when I build a server I label the drives prior to putting it into production ( by the low-tech method of booting up without a drive plugged in, determine which one it is, rinse/repeat for all drives in system ).

So I need to migrate my old windows home server to an OS that can use advanced format hard drives.

I I though there was supposed to be a way to connect to the server without joining a domain though?

I notice the server does not how up on the network from my windows 7 PC How do I get to the connector software? Do I have to join the Domain?

Answer:Windows Server Essentials Domain

Define "connect" to it.

I've just purchased a new Dell server with Server2012 Essentials for a work project, and while it is configured for a domain I can US RDP and shared folders from computers that are not attached to the domain. Granted because it's all in development at the moment I am using a admin account on the server for access rights.

Has anyone else gotten this combo to work?

Whenever I try to install WSE2012 through UEFI/BIOS it fails. The computer reboots before I even get into the setup GUI. So far, I have only been able to boot into DOS.

I've removed all PCIE cards, unplugged hard drives, and updated the BIOS to the latest version.

I verified the chksum of the WSE2012 against Technet so i know my download is good.

I burned the ISO to DVD & Flash drive.

The Motherboard is toast, and well although it wasn't having any issues keeping up with some cameras and file storage and backups, I guess it might be time to replace it with my 4770k office PC (ex gaming rig) and upgrade that machine.

I don't do these posts (Hey look at me, I'm awesome!!!), but this one needed to be made...
I am a graduate of both WHS v1 and 2011. I liked both, missed drive extender, and loathed my ATT Gateway as a result. That said, they always backed up on time, and the way I wanted, with no issues (until Drive Bender decided to bork everything and my Windows 8 laptop refused to play nice with WHS2011).

Well, my server needed an upgrade anyway, so I decided to gut it (mostly) and start over with the new Server Essentials 2012. (SE2012 from here on)

Old Specs: Core 2 Duo E4400, 2gb DDR2, Some s775 Asus board, and a 9800GT PE + a 2TB WD Green.

New Specs: AMD A6-3650, 4GB DDR3, an MSI A55m-P33, an Intel 120gb SSD for the OS, and I added two more WD Green 2TB drives (total 6tb).

I cannot emphasize it enough how easy the setup was. Drivers installed with no issues, straight from the mobo disk, and then updated through windows update. Unlike with my two WHS installs, I didn't have to trick them into thinking it wasn't a server OS etc. Getting DriveBender back in the form of storage pools was awesome, and again, set up with no issues whatsoever including built in duplication. The entire process, hardware switch included, took MAYBE 2 hours. That includes setting up a domain on the network with SE2012.

So, compared to my previous server OS experience, I also like the new dashboard. It's a bit easier to work with and makes a little more sense, though some of the dire... Read more

It sounds like it would be well-suited to a home file server/backup, as it does full backup of client systems. It sounds like it does some of what WHS does, but is meant for a business market.

I think at one time SBS was able to do WHS-like drive pooling. I haven't seen any info, but can SBS 2011 do that?

I am just curious how well it works. Right now I have Server 2008 running with a virtual WHS for backups, but it's not really optimal as backups aren't really backed up. I have the clients doing a SyncToy backup, but it's not as reliable as I would like. I thought SBS could replace the pair working together, and would remove some complications and maybe be a little more dependable.

I have a new client with one server running Windows SBS 2011and 5 computers
that log into it.  The server is in a very unstable state throwing tons of errors at every angle, so the office has chosen to buy a new server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

My question is ? can I
setup the new server offsite and domain then when I get to the office completely
back up the old server, create new local accounts on the client computers and copy the data (My Documents, Favorites, Desktop Files and etc.) over to the new local account,
shutdown the old server, bring up and copy all the data to the new server, and then have the new client local accounts join the new domain?  Since this is such a small new domain,
does Windows Server 2012 R2 Essential require a DHCP and DNS server or can the SonicWall handle that?

I've reached the end of my limited networking knowledge. Here's the deal:

- I have my home server running Windows Server Essentials 2012. Its primary function is backups of my various computers.
- My ISP is ATT Uverse, which provides a modem/router/gateway. It sucks teh ballz, so I set into bridge mode and set up a Netgear Nighthawk behind it. ALL devices are connected to the Nighthawk.
- I want to set up the server for remote access so that family can grab pictures and files remotely, and so I can do the same.
- I followed the instructions and the auto setup (I had to forward ports 80 and 443 manually, but that's done), and from the server's perspective, it says it is set up:

And now the problem:
When I try to access the sever from INSIDE the network, it loads the login page no problem. BUT, when I do so from the outside, the server sends no data, nothing loads.
Am I missing a setting on the bridged gateway?

I'm trying to help a friend to get their Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup up in their small business.

Server is operational, but I'm having issues connecting PCs to it...

I'm able to get to the server page by going to http://(servername)\connect
I can download the connector software, when I run it it finds the server it ask for user name and password.

After entering info it tries to connect for 20-60 seconds and fails with:

Cannot coonect this computer to the network
The Server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see troubleshooting connecting computers to the server.

any idea what could be causing?

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as ""

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.
All PCs are connected to the network with an IP phone as a device in the middle, that seems be slowing down the phones from normal gigabit to 10/100 only.

Any help would be grateful.

I just have to say that GFI Mail Essentials is the best damn anti spam program for servers. The Bayesian Analysis works great. The DNS Blacklist works great. I work for this company and before I came they were getting 500 spam e mails in their in-box a day (and GFI was installed) then I set it to learn off the outbound e mails for a while (bayesian filter) and as soon as I got enough HAM e mails I activated it and BAM. 90% of spam stopped. Take note people who work for companies with programs like this : If you have auto whitelist on and you have trend scanmail for MS Exchange it will add all the senders of the virri to your WHITELIST!
The thing to do is :
1. Turn off Auto Whitelist
2. Weed through the whitelist created.
3. Goto the GFI Mail Essential Reporter.
4. Set it to print out domain statistics on the screen, set it to base it on # of e mails and set it to outbound only and BAM you got all the major players that the company e mails.
5. Goto NOTEPAD (old school) and based on how many e mails that people in your company/network send to particular domain addresses add them to the whitelist as *, well first put em in notepad and then transfer em. It really does not take that long but weeding out the bad e mail addys takes a long *** time. Even if you add the bad domains to the blacklist, if they are on the whitelist it bypasses it (which sucks). However, if you are a lazy systems admin and don't have jack **** to do because you did it all it is a g... Read more

There is an article on SuperSite that explains how to add a computer to a Server 2012 Essentials machine (i.e. install the connector software) without it taking over the workstation and adding it to the domain.

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

I have just succeeded in hooking my Windows 10 client to Windows Server Essentials 2016. To do this I had to switch the W10 from a Workgroup to Domain setup.
All works fine except most of the desktop items originally on the client icons disappeared. Worse when I launce things like Outlook, Word etc. I have to initialize it from scratch.
How does one get all the settings, desktop icons etc. to re-appear on this new account that is now chanced from a Workgroup to a Domain setting.
I am an administrator (and only user) on both the W10 and WSE-2016. I see under users my original name on the W10/Workgroup and a new name. The new name does not have many files in it. I assume that?s the problem. But when I copy stuff from the old name folder across the programs are still not initialized correctly.

Sorry this may seem like a dumb question but I'm trying to learn NT myself.

I have set up a small network - file server and 12 workstations. I have created accounts and created folders for each user on the server. 12 users can log in no problem. But here is a weird problem I have run into - only about 6 people can access their folders on the server at a time. When more try to access it says

Folder is not accesible. The request is not accepted by the network. Try again later.

After some people log off, the others have no problem getting in. This is getting frustrating. Do you have any ideas?

We appreciate any help!

Answer:Help! Connections to server

Is the file server NT4.0 server or a workstation setup as a server? Is there a domain or workgroup? It sounds like the restrictions of using a workstation as a server (10 concurrent connections only, includes extraneous pipes). Open Control Panel and double-click server and check Connections for currently connected users. There may be registry keys that limit the current connections, but I can't find it at the moment.

We have an important LOB application (QuickBooks 2018) that requires that requires Internet Explorer 11 for QB to operate correctly.  Unfortunately our server runs Windows Server 2012 Essentials as an operating system (not R2).  From reviewing
various Microsoft documents, I realize that IE 11 is not supported on Server 2012.  However, we need to be able to run QuickBooks, which requires that version of IE.  Upgrading the server OS to 2012 R2 would take hours, because there is no in-place
upgrade option.  We would have to reinstall and configure the OS again from scratch.
Is there anything we can do to resolve this problem?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

When the computer is left on but unattented for several hours, I have to reboot the system to connect to my cable server to go online. I have noticed this recently after I downloaded and installed SP1 from Microsoft. Might this new service pack have changed something? Anyone have any ideas what's going on?

Answer:cable server connections

Is your cable modem connected to your computer via ethernet or USB? What are your Power Options settings? What might be happening is that your computer is going into standby and the drivers for your ethernet card, if that's what you have, or cable modem, if you are using USB, don't properly come back from standby.

Hey guys, for some time now my computer has been having trouble connecting to servers... All firewalls off, all anti-virus programs off, what ever the case may be, and it simply won't even give a chance for some things to connect.

Mostly, I've encountered problems with Authentication/Update servers for games/programs and even ITunes store. I've tried formatting and even a new hard drive and the problem persists and it just seems like I can't turn to anyone who knows what the problem is... Is there anything (like a log or something) that I can give you guys to try and figure out what's stopping me from connecting to these things?

More specific things...

Installing Aion (a game)
It would install it all, and then when it would hit 100%, it would just stop working (supposedly that's an online authentication).

Repairing World of Warcraft (says it cannot connect to the server)

ITunes Store
Getting the error: ITunes cannot connect to the ITunes store.

Blizzard Launcher
(News page server from a game)

Steam Browser
(Cannot open a direct connection from the program, I have to open Mozilla and type the address in)

Internet Explorer
It simply doesn't connect to the internet...

A lot of things like this happen, I have no clue what it is, firewall on with allowances... Nothing.

Firewall off... nothing

I've even uninstalled the antivirus to see if it would work... Nothing.

I'm just lost as to what is up...... Read more

Answer:Blocking server connections?

1. What version of windows are you running?
2. How do you connect to the internet? I assume broadband so is it dsl or cable?
3. If cable, do you connect through a router? If so, brand and model.
4. When did the problem first start?
5. Have you done anything to try and fix it?
6. Have you run any scans to be sure the computer does not have malware?

I've used IIS for many years to load test various remote server applications. Recently it suddenly started refusing connections with the "too many users are connected" error. This message is usually associated with IIS on W2K Professional, which has a built in limit of 10 simultaneous connections. However this is a full version of IIS 5.0 on W2K Server, so should have no such usage restrictions. As a result of this I can no longer load test, as most connections are refused.

Any suggestions as to what might have gone wrong, or how to fix it please?

Answer:IIS on W2K Server restricted to 10 connections

Are ye running IIS5 on the server itself? Is the server, in relation to IIS5 set to use more than 10 concurrent connections?

My office has Windows 2003 server, we have 10 workstations with 2000 pro.
We are connected to DSL
There is a Firewall/Router/modem for internet access. We have a cable from it to our network switch. The server and all workstations have cables to the network switch.

Our problem is: Sometimes one or all of the workstations will not be able to connect to the Server. Which causes us not to be able to get to our Accounting software or to the internet. We find this happens when there is an interruption to the internet connection.

We shut down all the computers, reset the Internet Router, then turn on the computers and we can connect.

The ISP had a man set everything up for us. So I am not too sure how the server is set up.

My question is , should we set up another computer as the DHCP server and the server we have only as a file/print server. So when the Internet disconnects we will still be able to connect to the server for files and printing.

Or is there settings on our server that need changed.

I know I have not given you all the information that you need but, I will get the answers for you, I hope someone can help.

I have this scenario
ADSL modem that gives me Intrnet access through telephone wire ZTE 831cii - - - - > connected with tplink wifi router----> and some pcs are connected through wire to this router and other through wireless.

My pc os connected through wire to router. And u have statically set its ip settings. I have assigned it a dns address of and
Now on the sequence of the devices the first one facing the world is the ZTE ADSL modem. It will be getting a dns address from isp. Then there is the tplink and it's getting its ip settings through dhcp on the ZTE modem therefore the dns for it is the ip private ip address of the ZTE modem. But this tplink is also acting as a dhcp and it is handing out its own ip address in the settings for dns. (not from the subnet which is running between the ZTE and this tplink but from a separate subnet which it handles to the clients.

And then in my pc it's Google dns.

So when from this particular pc I surf net etc which dns does the job?

Answer:What is my dns server in the following series of connections

If you have statically defined DNS servers in the computer they are the ones that will be used. The DNS servers that the router provides by DHCP are for computers that are configured to use them. Your PC has manual settings that override this.

If you have more than one computer you could manually configure the desired DNS servers in the router and leave the computers on default configuration. That way all will receive the DNS servers defined by you.

Hi, All

I am going to try and setup a VPN Network on XP Pro with XP acting as the server also, I have read that only 1 incoming connection at a time is possible. I'm wondering if I use a multiple end point router will this allow me to have 3-5 people accessing the server database at the same time.

All clients are XP Pro and the network is needed to access quickbooks database also the server will be used for LAN as well if anyone can give me advice on if i can do this, some pointers would be much appreciated.

I've got a windows 2000 server for about 50 users and 5 printers. I have 85 server CALs. My users can login fine until there is about 20 users in the system. Then users can no longer connect with the server.

I've got a PIII 1.2 GHz 512 MB ram, 30 GB hard drive machine, so it's got enough juice.

It's not licensing, hardware, DNS, DHCP. I've got all the service packs and updates, and I've also been on the phone with microsoft for about 4 hours and have them stumped.

OK, this is a strange one.

I've got a broadband connection which is running trouble-free apart from one thing. When I try to make a connection to a server (for instance, to download a security update for anti-virus software) the connection fails.

I noticed this first on my AVG (free ed) anti-virus. If I go to Update manager and click Update, an error message is displayed. It says the update server connection failed, and gives a lot of info on checking the net connection is working.

However, the problem is not limited just to this program. I downloaded a software installer today, and during install it tries to create a connection to another server - but again this fails.

The same problem has happened with other programs too.

I'm guessing it's some security feature getting over-excited, but have no idea apart from that. I'm using Win XP Pro. HT file is below in case that's of any use.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Good very hello!

I have been wrestling with this for almost 2 weeks and have come to wits end. I have repeatively installed OS over dozen times to no avail. I have set the network connection to private (tried public also) trying both ethernet and wireless (even tried disabling IPv6 in this setting and also tried registry hack to disable it as I was reading elsewhere on the net where someone could not get Remote Desktop to connect until he tried disabling it and it then worked)...

I mainly use Firefox and a little over a week ago whenever I open Firefox I get a message that states,"The proxy server is refusing connections.Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections." I tried using Chrome and received the same message that it was configured to use a proxy server.I have never told either of these browsers to use a proxy. I did a scan with MalwareBytes and it removed something with the name pom.bad.proxy but that still did not fix it. I have scanned my computer with AVG and Spybot but came up with nothing. When I look at the proxy settings for firefox it shows manual proxy configuration: port 61758,SOCKS v5,No Proxy for:Localhost, 127.0.01. Something is causing it to try using my loopback address. I'm sure there either is something in my computer or there was something in my computer that caused this problem but I have run out of ideas on how to fix it.

I need to record the amount of data sent between two server, so I can cross-reference the results to Performance Monitor logs. I know how to gather a record of all network traffic in performance monitor but I can't find a way to separate out the traffic by ip.
My ideal solution would be to have a graph with performance monitor data for key server performance indicators alongside the total network traffic and a breakdown of traffic between the 2 specified servers.
Basically I have an exchange server and an application server that syncs calendar information, I want to be able to monitor the traffic from the application Server to and from exchange to see if it is having a noticeable effect on exchange performance.
Hope this makes sense

I am debating between Server 2008 R2 Standard and Enterprise. My only remaining concern is the Standard edition's 250 RRAS and 50 IAS connections limitations. The reason that makes this decision hard is I don't completely understand what the difference between these two is.

RRAS is for remote access/VPN connections to the domain, right?

IAS is RADIUS clients, right?

Now does 250 RRAS connections mean 250 remote/vpn users?

Does 50 IAS connections mean 50 users or 50 access points pointing back to NPS RADIUS for authentication? (Is a client a user or access point)

Finally, are these restirctions per server or per domain?

Answer:Server Standard 50 IAS Connections Question

IAS was the term for the RADIUS authentication server in 2000/2003. In 2008/2008 r2 it is replaced with the NPS (Network Policy Server) server role. NPS also does health checking for Network Access Protection.

As for licensing differences - this is from a Microsoft whitepaper on NPS:

Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and Datacenter Editions
With NPS in Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and Windows Server 2008 Datacenter, you can configure an unlimited number of RADIUS clients and remote RADIUS server groups. In addition, you can configure RADIUS clients by specifying an IP address range.

Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition
With NPS in Windows Server 2008 Standard, you can configure a maximum of 50 RADIUS clients and a maximum of 2 remote RADIUS server groups. You can define a RADIUS client by using a fully qualified domain name or an IP address, but you cannot define groups of RADIUS clients by specifying an IP address range. If the fully qualified domain name of a RADIUS client resolves to multiple IP addresses, the NPS server uses the first IP address returned in the Domain Name System (DNS) query.Click to expand...

A RADIUS client is a VPN concentrator, WAP, etc.

RRAS is for setting up vpn connections (end user or site-to-site). Here's an overview of the limitations of each edition:
2003 Std - 1000 VPN connections
2003 Ent - Unlimited
2008 Std - 250 connections
2008 Ent & Data Cetner - unlimited

Each VPN user and site-to-site tunnel would count toward... Read more

I'm wondering if there's some way I can set it up so that programs use multiple connections to a server instead of just 1. I'm asking as it appears that my ISP has done something to where I'm only getting about half the normal speed on any one connection to a server. I'm going to check to see if they are but in the mean time I want to try to find a solution anyway.

For example, if I open a Youtube video it is only buffering at around 66KB/sec. If I open another Youtube video then it uses up the remaining bandwidth, and then I am downloading at 120KB/sec which is the maximum for my connection. Up until this week a single Youtube video could buffer at 120KB/sec. The same is true for everything else.

I've checked on both PCs at my household and tried hooking directly to the modem with the same result.

Approximately 3 weeks ago, I got a malware infection that caused fake virus alerts/antivirus software popups and then caused my browser to redirect to a rather unsavory website. At that time, I ran performed all of the tasks in the Malware Removal Read Me First document. I thought that this took care of the problem; however, in the weeks since, I've noticed that when I try to open Mozilla Firefox, I get the message: "The proxy server is refusing connections. Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections." In those weeks, I had been using Internet Explorer, which is working with no problem. Unistalling and reinstalling Firefox has not helped.

I have attached the logs from the scans I ran 3 weeks ago. I did run them all in safe mode because otherwise, the popups prevented me from opening any programs. I just wanted to make sure that things looked clean and this was not the result of lingering malware.

Thank you very much for your help.

Okay, so recently, ever since updating my firefox to ver12.0, every time i open firefox, my tabs will refuse connection and I'll be shown this:
"The proxy server is refusing connections
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections.
Check the proxy settings to make sure that they are correct.
Contact your network administrator to make sure the proxy server is working."
So is started looking on google for some solutions and found that most problems were solved by disabling proxy.
So i go to option>advance>network>settings
and click on 'no proxy'. It worked, but i found that every time i closed and restarted firefox, the settings reverted back to 'manual proxy configuration' and firefox would show the same error.
Another solution i tried was going to:
control panel>network and internet>internet options>connections>LAN settings and i unchecked all the boxes. That didn't help at all too.
I also downgraded to Firefox 11.0 and still no help.

The fact that I'm not too good with computers makes it harder. I find other solutions on google, but if it's not in step by step form or seems too risky (they might not be, but since i don't understand it...) i would skip it.

This has been driving me crazy for a while, please help ><"

Answer:The proxy server is refusing connections

In Internet Explorer's "LAN Settings", you say you unticked all the boxes.

When not using a proxy server, the box for Automatically detect settings should be ticked.

Remember to click 'OK' to save the new setting.

Hi, can someone point me towards a good guide that will help me setup my office's wired network with one main server through which all the traffic goes while filtering everything I have blocked?

Also, I have a 5 port hub, can I work with it or do I need a bigger switch?

I only have 5 PCs in my office.

Answer:How to setup a server and clients using wired connections?

You would be way ahead to invest in a good 8 or 16 port switch which supports Jumbo Frames. I presume you would want internet connectivity as well in which case you should invest in the best router your budget can afford and that too should support Jumbo Frames. I assume that you have a windows based server so the question there is what kind of hardware powers the server?

This actual configuration of a small office connection wise is fairly simple, All computers and the router attached to a good quality switch should serve you well. If there will be a lot of traffic run through your server and your hardware supports has or support two NIC's then it would be a good idea to Team a Pair together which would provide failover ability. Should work well as long as you have the hardware to support it. You get what you pay for!

In order to use Jumbo Frames in your network keep in mind that all connections must support it or it will not work.

I am looking into getting a VPN to use for more internet privacy at my house (A house of several people and multiple computers) and have noticed with a lot of the VPN services out there that you can't make multiple connections from the same internet connection, which I would like to do. All the routers I have laying around are not capable of connecting via PPTP or whatever other VPN protocol from the router itself and that also isn't exactly what I want to do. I like the setup on Windows where you can create a new VPN connection and then it gives you a desktop icon you can click on to quickly connect to your VPN whenever you want and easily disconnect to use the normal internet connection. I would like to be able to have all the computers in my home capable of having this option, where by default they are using the normal internet connection and then multiple computers at once, if they wish, can connect to the vpn from an icon like this on the desktop. Searching around I came to this interesting guide on this ubuntu site about doing this very solution where you are technically connecting to a computer you have running on the local network as your "VPN" server which effectively routes all the traffic to your remote VPN connection so that your "server" computer is the only one connected but you can still use the VPN at will from any computer in the house.

I believe I would like to do precisely what is described in this thread, except on Windows XP:

It is not all users that get kicked, but rather one or two at a time. If they wait a few minutes or reboot, it will work again. This issue started with their old server, and that's why we replaced it. The issue is still happening. Almost all of the clients are Win2k pro, with a few being Windows XP Pro. Atleast one XP Pro has had this problem too.

Here's what I have tried.
1- swapped out the 24port 10/100 switch (Removed SMC - Installed 3com)
2 - Replaced the patch cable from the switch to the server.
3 - Made sure that windows had all available updates.

Any suggestions?

I'm working on a 2000 Server setup for a friend. Litlte 3 workstation setup (2 Win2000 Pro, 1 XP Pro). They have a share mapped from the 2000 Server and have an icon on the desktop. Works great, it's a little old DOS program. For the last few weeks they claim every morning they come in and when they click on the icon it says the share has been disconnected. Go into network neighborhood and you see the server (Server1) but when you double click you get one of the oddball messages like "Server cannot perform specified task". Reboot the server and it works!

So I check the event log, its showing a lot of MxSub messages. I'll get them and post them if anyone needs them. But the main thing I noticed was that the server wasn't setup for a domain, but setup for a workgroup. It's part of the workgroup. I really don't see the need of Windows 2000 Server if they're just sharing a 10 year old DOS program, but whatever. I'm wondering if they're having problems because it's not setup with a domain and as a PDC. I setup the DNS server on that server and had it point to itself and had the other computers point to it, but I'm wanting to see if theres any reason why I shouldn't set it up as a DOMAIN and as a PDC instead of a workgroup. I don't know who set this up originally. They said it worked for a year or so just fine until a week or two ago. Supposedly the only change was that they had ... Read more

Answer:Windows 2000 Server - keeps dropping connections

Running as a workgroup would be fine since they are so small. Make sure the server has all the latest patches/etc. The advantages of AD don't really make sense in such a small network.

My computer is stopping certain programs to access the internet, all I get (with browsers) is "proxy server refusing connections". I've managed to get firefox online, by enabling the "detect proxy automatically", but no luck with opera. Both steam and digsby(msn like IM client) goes into offline mode, WoW won't start, but AVG, Spotify and ?Torrent works just fine. Something similar to this have happened a lot before, but a simple reboot fixed the problem, but no luck this time.

I don't know if they'r related but early this morning a fake antivirus program popped up as a tray icon. It spewed the same old bullbleep that every .exe i tried to start was infected, and started "scanning" my computer and claiming to find viruses.

I started the pc in safemode, and searched for it with AVG, but no luck. I used windows run and opened the msconfig - boot.ini, and saw a wierd program on the startup list, so I found the .exe file in "Users\nn\AppData\Local\Temp\ovaockxmv\wvllelvlajb.exe" I ran Malwarebytes, and it removed 4 trojans, though the problem persists.

I've searched google for a solution, but all that came up was page after page with firefox problems, though FF works just fine for me now.

I really hope someone here can help me, as it is really annyoing to have several programs blocked from accessing the internet.

I'm using Windows 7 32-bit

I've also found out where it c... Read more

I'm running server 2003 standard and bootup is taking a long time. It stays for a really long time on "Prepairing network connections" then finally gets to the logon screen.
It did not do this when I first installed this.
Specs: soyo 6ba+IV PIII 800mhz 512mb ram (not oc'd)
30 gig maxtor dimond max hd (its on a 10gig partition)
The system is used in a home environment for basic fileserving and is also now being used as the demo comptuer for my senior design project which is a home automation system.
any insight would be helpful

Edit: This happens wether or not the network cable is plugged in.

Answer:server 2003 prepairing network connections

Is it set up for or has it been changed to run Active Directory?

Slow logons usually mean a DNS problem and DNS would be used in AD.

Hi guys,

I created a VPN server using the Windows XP Pro network assistant. I would like to known, if anyone of you would know what registry key I need to edit to allow this VPN server to accept more than 1 simultanous connection.

If I create a VPN server using the network assistant in Windows Server 2003, by default it will allow multiple connections. But I do pocess a legal copy of Windows Server 2003, so I don't want to use it.

Since Windows Server 2003 use the same VPN server/client than Windows XP Pro, I presume this limitation is due to a registry entry. I would like to known which one it is so I could allow my Windows XP Pro to do the same.

Thanks in advance,

Whenever i open firefox n type url it gives me msg " Proxy server is refusing connections".
every time i hev to go to where i see that it has selected manual proxy configuration...then i ve to select autodetect option ...n only then it starts working .
everytime i hve to do this . pls help

Answer:Firefox - Proxy Server Refusing Connections

Have you tried just entering the address of the proxy server automatic proxy configuration url. If you go to tools > options > advanced > network > settings. At the bottom there is an option for inputing the url of the proxy server, so that everytime you load firefox it will use that server. Try that and see if that makes a difference.

I've been having a problem for awhile now and it's driving me up the wall. I thought it was my cheap Belkin router, so I replaced it with the fabled Linksys WRT54G in hopes that the problem would go away, but it doesn't. Some detail:

INTERNAL: 2003 Server, Domain Controller (DNS server, DHCP server)-->WRT54G on internal interface (no default gateway, first in Connections list), directly on Internet via second internal interface (default gateway, second NIC in Connections list). I am using NAT on the router.

WRT54G-->DSL connection on WAN, Server on LAN ports, 2 client PC's via 802.11g

Domain User accounts with redirected My Documents (Offline files enabled)

Every few minutes at random intervals, I get the "You are no longer connected to [servername]" error message and the system begins working offline. In this condition I cannot access my DFS root. RDP connections work fine and are stable, and if I simply right click the offline files icon and choose "Synchronize" the problem disappears for awhile. The WRT54G is acting solely as my router, there is no DHCP running on it. I have also updated it to the latest firmware (1.00.09, if I recall) which is supposed to resolve an "internal DNS server" issue. My own server reveals no errors in the logs whatsoever, and a DNS check passes instantly every time. Extended logging reveals no errors.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Answer:Help Please: Connections to my server keep dropping!, Using Wireless router

OK, so the server has 2 NIC's in it?
Im thinking it has something to do with having 2 NICs in the server

The easiest way to determine if its related would be set the router as a static IP (say .2) set the server as static IP (say .5) and then disable the NIC2 in the server.

Routers not doing any DNS or DHCP, correct?

The wireless clients should only say that error if they lose connection...maybe low wireless signal? (unsure if you get the error with the wireless unit next to the router)

I have zone alarm and the two popups I get which do not seem to hamper my internet use at all are when svchost.exe asks to act as a server, and when it asks to if I want it to accept connections from the internet. What the heck are these actions for if I just deny them access and yet my computer works fine?

So, I'm confused. Enterprise Server 2008 says that it supports up to 25 remote users, but it only supports 2 remote connections without turning on the TS Role from the Server Manager.

Now once you turn it on, it says that I have 120 days grace period before it starts asking again for a license.

Now, what would happen after the 120 days, if more than 2 people connect, will I have to buy a 5 pack license for the remote users?

I'm really confused, any takes out there?

Answer:Windows Server 2008 Enterprise and 2 Max RDP connections

All versions of Windows Server only allow 2 simultaneous RDP sessions for administration. It's been that way for quite some time.
You've always had to get Terminal Server licenses to get more than that.

I imagine once the grace period runs out, if there are already 2 users logged in, any additional users would get denied with a notice about licensing.

Server 2008 comes with 10 or 25 CALs, which do not equate to Terminal Server/Remote Desktop licenses. CAL is Client Access License.

Hi, I am running windows XP pro on the server with 8 computers running simultaneous connections to the shared drive.

However, when I run net session on the server, it shows multiple connections per computer, so someone is getting booted off. When I check the computers, there is only one mapped connection and one user logon.

How do I limit the connections to one per computer?

I have recently installed a NETGEAR modem for internet connection and currently have two computers connected to it through to the internet.

One is running Windows 7 and works fine.

The other is running Windows XP and although initially it was connecting, it now comes up with this message when trying to connect through IE or Mozilla (The Proxy Server is refusing connections
Firefox is configured to use a proxy server that is refusing connections).

I can upload to remote servers as I have a couple of websites that I amend regulalrly and publish to the web. I guess it's the download side that's the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I have an incoming (only) mail server that is initiating connections to a fairly significant number of IPs on nonstandard ports. These connections occur 1-30 seconds after an incoming connection attempt (some, not all) and are directed towards high numbered ports (same as source port for incoming firewall log).

Any ideas what this traffic is?

Answer:Incoming Mail Server Initiating Connections

Source ports will always vary, it's the destination port that is important. The server could be replying to a connecting attempt for mail delivery. Is this Windows of *nix? Check which processes are using those ports.

Hello all, I kind of need some help with this, just for a friend. My friend is trying to run a small Minecraft multiplayer server from home. It was working just fine until he got a really nasty virus, and the server was down for a few days, which in the meantime he got Mcafee AntiVirus Plus. Now, Mcafee blocks all incoming connections it seems, regardless of whether the server's port (25565) or the Java module from which it runs (javaw.exe) is allowed full access. He did a test yesterday by putting the firewall down for 5 minutes and opening the server; It worked fine from my computer.I've seen some posts saying that Mcafee is an "unselective" firewall, I guess it just seems to overblock. If my friend has to uninstall Mcafee to get it to work, He'll probably do it...How do I get this through? It's obviously a VERY bad idea to do this without any firewall, but I've tried everything in my somewhat-limited playbook to get this through without disabling the firewall completely.~oldieNot everyone can decipher Klingon script... chay' ta' SoH tlhe' vam Doch Daqmessage edited by OLDISGOOD

Answer:Mcafee firewall blocking server connections

If you are using a router, it has own hardware firewall so even if you uninstall McaFee you are not totally unprotected. Furthermore, you can always install an alternative to Mcafee. I use Comodo Internet Security which is both fully configurable and, best of all, completely free: edited by phil22

basically what id like to do

lets say i have a server(running ad) in one city and a server(running ad) in another city, to the end users I would like seamless connectivity in some way.

I was thinking that using RRAS-VPN and dial on demand routing on a second NIC would do the trick, have any of you had experience with this, possibly a better solution?

Answer:server to server connections

Closest I've done to that, I always prefer the hardware approach, so one architect client of mine...Sonicwall routers in each location, router to router VPN tunnel tween's the mainland office and the office on the island. Did trust between the domains at each location. (the distant location...I didn't put the server in, I would have kept it all one domain..but that's what I had to work with, so I did the trust).

I downloaded Windows Live Essentials for the messenger but now I would like to unistall it. I went to Uninstall/Change Programs in my control panel to uninstall it and I noticed a program called Windows Live Mesh activex control for remote connections. What is that for? and can I uninstall that as well? My dilemma here is that I cannot seem to uninstall Windows Live Essentiials. I double clicked on it in the Uninstall/Change Programs list and and was given a window that gave me the options:
1)remove one or more Windows Live Programs
2)Repair all Windows Live Programs

I clicked on the first option but it never let me choose which programs to uninstall. It just quickly flashed a window that said "uninstalling" and then it showed me "Done! Your programs you selected have been uninstalled." I didn't get to select anything to uninstall though. In the end, Windows Live essential is still installed and I can't get rid of it.

Any suggestions guys?

Answer:Uninstalling Windows Live Essentials and windows live mesh activex control for remote connections

Someone else will have to advise you regarding Windows Live Mesh. I know nothing about that. For Windows Live Essentials: If you cannot remove WLE using add remove programs try Revo Uninstaller. If I remember correctly it will not ask which components you want to remove. Here is how to use Revo Uninstaller: 1) First we download it from here: Revo Uninstaller Free Version. Scroll down the page for the free version download. You can skip this Step if you already have it installed. However, you may need to update it. If you have it installed already, and you need to update it, go ahead and open it up and click the AutoUpdate Icon next to Help. The use of this program makes registry changes based upon what you select for removal from the Registry. Before running Revo Uninstaller please run ERUNT before proceeding to back up your registry in case you make a mistake. 2) Select the Program to remove from the list of programs and click the Uninstall button: 3) After selecting the program you want to remove, and confirming you want to uninstall the program, then you will want to select the Advanced Option: 4) Click Next. This will start the uninstaller for the application you picked. When the uninstaller is done, and it proves to be successful, and a reboot is required, then select NO and continue the below steps. 5) Follow the prompts during the uninstallation of the application. Once it closes you will be at this window: 6) Click Next again. Once the window is do... Read more

I'm trying to use Access Connections to connect a T60P to our secure WLAN. The appropriate server certificate, "Equifax Secure Certificate Authority" is not in the list, however it's on the PC. If I use the XP network settings for wireless, this certificate is in the list and I'm able to connect using it as well.  However, I would rather use the Access Connection software to manage many different locations.  Shouldn't the Access Connections software use the same certificates as found in Windows? I use XP SP3 and all available Windows Updates and Access Connections 5.02. Does anyone know how to add the "Equifax Secure Certificate Authority" certificate to the list? Also to note, on a different Vista T61 PC the "Equifax Secure Certificate Authority" DOES show up  in both Access Connections and Vista network settings.  So, this problem may be limited to XP.

About 3 weeks ago we migrated all of our users from one AD domain server to another pre-existing server. 2 Weeks ago we migrated our file/print server to that same domain.

Ever since we migrated the file & printer server, users randomly lose their connection to the print queues. The only way to get them working again is by connecting to the server via IP address rather than host name. The computers can't even see the server with the current FQDN - only by the IP address.

Has anyone had an issue like this after a migration?

All client machines are running Win 7 x64, and the server in question is running Server 2k8 R2.

Answer:Server migrated to new domain. Client's connections keep dropping

What happens when they reboot? It starts working again? You said "users randomly lose their connection to the print queues." does that mean they randomly gain connections also? Do they randomly loose it when it's IP based or only domain based?

Did you verify the DNS server? Does /flushdns resolve anything?

Did you check for GPOs or scripts?

I am currently administering an Exchange server on Windows 2003 Server, SP2, with Active Directory.

My problem is that I have a user who has an account and uses this account to share between multiple clients for purposes of looking the same shared calendar. He has recently reported that he cannot connect over 16 machines at the same time without problems. I suspect that there is an issue with the number of allowed concurrent connections but cannot find anything that answers my questions.

I would appreciate any help I could get in this regard.

Answer:Exchange Server - single user- concurrent connections

I am somewhat of a novice when it comes to exchange but it might be better to create a mailbox for all these clients and just disable their ability to send mail, that way they can still view the shared calendar.
