Preferred Solution: Booting from OpenIndiana live CD just takes me to grub/command line

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi all, first time poster (not super tech savvy, unfortunately) here. These forums look great and I hope I can get help/give help in the future! Any help with this issue is greatly appreciated.

Alright, so--

The long and short of it is that I needed to authenticate my Windows 7, and the method I chose to use (don't need to get into specifics here) to do that asked me which computer brand I was licensing under, and gave me all of the computer brand options: Asus, Dell, HP, etc. I'm actually using Windows via Mac's BootCamp, which has worked just fine until this recent issue.

Anyway, in choosing one of the random brands (because Apple wasn't an option, I think I chose Asus because it was the first option) I think I messed up one of my Windows 7's licensing/whatever permissions. After I chose this option, THE ACTIVATION APPEARED SUCCESSFUL--the text in the corner that said "this copy of windows is not genuine" disappeared, and a Windows 7 window popped up saying "restart is required to use all of the features of Windows 7 ultimate",

but then when I restart it stops at a black, DOS looking screen (looks sort of like the recovery mode options, I think it's the boot manager) and says something about a file path like "root / bootmgr" and then "Error 15: file not found...press any key to continue"

It then takes me to another DOS (red and white very basic looking) in which it presents me with a few boot option... Read more

Lenovo M running Windows 10 shutdown all by itself.  No weird sounds, just shutdown.  On restart, it posted OK but instead of booting this command line came up:  grub rescue>    I used setprefix command to try and find which device computer was booting from but all of them returned 'unknown filesystem'.  Any ideas?  Is this a dead hard drive?

hi, Im trying to build a prototype which boots xp straight to an application without loading the desktop, is that possible? I really need that application to be the only thing usable, no start menu or right clicking aviliable; I need the user to not to be able to do anything else but use the application, so I think having no desktop could be the best way.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:booting to the command line and starting an application

Hi horacle and welcome to TSF !

If this is XP Pro you could probably disable explorer.exe and tskmgr.exe for all users except the admin using the group policies (start => run => gpedit.msc). Add a shortcut to your program in the user's startup menu (c:\documents and settings\username\start menu\programs\startup\) and it'll run at startup. Can't give you much more details about the changes in gpedit since I'm on XP Home.

With XP Home you can try to replace the default shell with your own program : browse the registry to
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
Locate or create the Shell key (a REG_SZ) and replace explorer.exe by the path and name of your application.

To disable the right click menu browse the registry to
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Wndows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
Create a NoViewContextMenu key (a REG_DWORD) and set it to 1 to disable the right-click context menus.

If you wish to also disable the task manager then browse the registry to HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
Create a DisableTaskMgr key (a REG_DWORD) and set it to 1 to Disable the task manager.

Be warned that if you edit the registry you need to make sure you can revert your changes. Without the task bar nor the task manager you won't be able to access the registry and winkey + R won't work either (you could always try in safe mode and logged as administrator but can't tell you for sure if it'll work). One easy way to undo... Read more

I was wondering what commands to use to boot to a specific OS for example in case my OS gets corrupted and I am not able to use the graphical user interface but I have other OS installed on different partitions or maybe different hard drives how can I able to access these OSs from the command line

Answer:How can I use the command line to boot to a specific OS when booting up

You dont really need to use the command line for this..

With my experience if you have more than one OS installed on either different partitions or HDs and there is a boot record assigned to multiple partitions or drives in Windows Disk Management then when you boot you are prompted for which one you would like to start.

I want to hide this. I'm running a python progam (if that matters) and it always has that open on my taskbar. I want to hide it. I don't care where it goes or how much time it takes, I just want to hide it. So I never have to deal with it. Maybe make it a system process or something? I don't know.

Thank you.

Answer:GNU Grub vers 0.97 (BASH LINE)

You were dual booting but now you are not and it sounds like you have lost your boot.ini file. Was the Linux on drive C:?
Do you have the Windows 2000 install software?

If you do then you might have to re-install Windows 2000 I do not think there is a way to rebuild the boot.ini file. I would suggest trying to install this hard drive into another computer as a slave drive and manually backup all of you data using a file manager. Then return it to this computer and do a full re-install of Windows 2000 on it.

Somehow the line that you put web sites -- after the http --has disappeared. I'm sure that there's a simple way to get it back but I'm new to WIN XP. Can someone help.

Answer:Lost command line -- line with site addresses WinXP

I think you are talking about the address bar in a web browser???

You did not mention what browser you are using. For Internet Explorer 6, right click in any other visible menu bar and then make sure that "Address Bar" is checked in the box that pops up. This may work for other versions of Internet Explorer.

Hi everyone, what is the commmand for command prompt to stop a process? What i would like to do is make a shortcut to stop the KBD.exe process. The reason for that is when someone in my family puts a disk in, plays a game, and sometimes when they take the disk out it complains about there being no disk in the drive. The only way to shut it up is to end the process in the task manager and click cancel on the window. This way is a little to complicated for some of the memebers of my family and i would like to be able to just create a shortcut for it.

Click on Start, then run
type in cmd to get to command prompt
type in taskkill /f kbd.exe

The forward slash /f forces it to kill the process.

Hello,

I'm trying to split a .flv file by using flvparse, which is a Windows-only, command-line interface tool. I did get through to the directory by following instructions posted on another forum, however, command prompt doesn't seem to recognize the the .exe file. I'm an absolute novice at this, any help would be really appreciated!

Attaching a CP s/s, and here are the instructions I'm trying to follow (copy pasted from the forum)

FLVPARSER

For trimming the beginning and/or ending of videos, you can use FLVParser (http://dev2.avacast.com/FLVparser.zip ).
FLVParser is a Windows-only, command-line interface tool. After you unzip it, move its folder to C:\ for ease of use. Also for ease of use, copy/move the .flv file you wish to edit into the FLVParse folder.
To make edits, you need to know the in and out points where you want the edits. Use FLVPlayer to find these points. FLVPLayer only lists times in total number of seconds, not HH:MM:SS, but don't worry, FLVParser can handle that. In the FLVParse directory create a new blank text file called: CuePointFile.dat
This is the file FLVParser uses to edit from. Open it in NotePad, and enter the in point and out point, separated by a single blank space, like so: 2525 5150
Save, and close the file. Open up the command line interface and go to the FLVParse directory: cd C:\FLVParse
In the command line, enter this to edit the flv:
flvparse.exe FileToSplit.flv CuePointFile.dat
Your file will be split into ... Read more

I've a dual boot machine running XP Pro and openSuse 10.3 using GRUB as booloading. Recently I developed some problems in windows after a virus attack and windows is not working. When I try to start in safe mode 'safe mode' apperas at the four corners of the screen and the screen remains black.
Linux is working fine.

I've decided to repair windows. I've changed the BIOS option to boot from my DVD drive first. But even though from the GRUB option when I choose windows it's not booting at all. The XP CD is fine and working perfectly in another computer.

Is it a GRUB problem or anything else?

Please help

Thanks in advance

Answer:Win XP CD not booting from GRUB

Once you performed a repair install on XP new default entries were entered into the mbr for Windows replacing Grub as the boot loader. You would now have to add XP back into it as a boot option.

Are you dual booting across more then one drive? Grub may be on one while the other contains the XP boot files.

Hi to everybody around here. First, first time poster and reader here. Read that this one is the best Windows forum out there. I'll explain this very detailed so I can help yo too: 1- Installed Linux Mint 17.1 Rebecca through bootable USB without any problem. To do so, I shrunk the C: partititon and created a 100 GB partition for Linux Mint. 2- Tried Linux Mint but had some issues with the graphic drivers, so I decided to delete Linux Mint from my laptop and give Ubuntu a try since it's more compatible (IMO) with the hardware. 3- Rebooted, went into W8.1 using GRUB like always. Deleted Linux partition and integrated it again to C: 4- I thought I finished my work so turned off the PC and went to sleep. Next day after booting: GNU GRUB version 2.02~beta2-9ubuntu1 Minimal BASH-like line editing is supported. For the first word, TAB lists possible command completions. Anywhere else TAB lists possible device or file completions. grub> Ok. Have to point out that: 1- Since is a laptop it came with W8 preinstalled, so I have no installation DVD to fix the MBR (in case that's what I have to do). 2- I have a bootable USB with Ubuntu, but even though I set USB as first boot device in BIOS, it is not recognized by GRUB or something, idk. Laptop: Toshiba Satellite C55D-B5351 AMD A8-6410 APU @2.0 GHz quad-core AMD R5-230M graphics (integrated in APU). 4GB DDR3 1333MHz Also I'd love that someone explains to me the correct way to uninstall Linux in the case I have to do it again ... Read more

Answer:BASH-like line GRUB error after deleting Linux partition.

It's hard to understand/read what you did.

1.Windows will not be bootable because GRUB boot loaded puts it's own MBR.
2.to fix this either run startup repair from Windows installation media or install new Linux which wll hopefully recognize Windows partition during partitioning part, (while initiating installation)
3.In worst case scenario you'll have to learn how to use GRUB or manually put Windows MBR or reinstall Windows.

Hi Everyone been a while since I have been on here.

This is not really a Windows 7 Problem more a general Computer issue. I'm posting in Win7 Forum because that's what original was on the Desktop.

I made a multi-boot USB stick so I could load different OS's on it to do installs. As well as some system tools (UBCD). One on particular Desktop I'm trying to boot to the Grub menu to select the UBCD to run a test on the RAM. When ever I boot the desktop to the USB stick it doesn't seem to recognize that there is a GRUB menu on it and boots directly into the Windows7home.iso.
I have created a second one just to see if it could be something weird with the stick, but still same result. As well I tested the sticks on other test PC i have around and they all boot to the GRUB menu.
I know your thinking just take the RAM out and put it in another PC to test it. I tried that as well, none of the other PC's Motherboards are compatible with that stick. I have resorted to getting a random HDD installing Windows 7 and running Windows ram Diagnostic (So that's taken care off).

I checked the BIOS to see if there was any option to enable/disable that would allow to boot, but nothing that sticks out to me.
What do you think causes that PC to not boot to the USB GRUB menu?
I'm in the process of updating the BIOS to see if that will help but if anyone has any other ideas post them.

Thanks

Hello everyone. I have a dual boot with grub. I have win7 with grub installed with it, and winXP as my second hard drive. My problem is that I need to format Win7 because It will not run backup successfully. It stops half way through and then stops. So I want to format Win 7, and reinstall it to get rid of a suspected virus. Will grub be erased when I reinstall Win 7. If It erases Win & then I cannot use Win XP either.

Answer:Dual Booting with grub.

Hello noel1d, welcome to Seven Forums!

Before we make any specific recommendations will you please post a snip/screen-shot of the entire disk management drive map with a full description as to which drive/partition is which, so we can see what you have going on as there may be a fairly simple way to resolve the situation.

In the Windows start menu right click computer and click manage, in the left pane of the "Computer Management" window that opens click disk management and post a snip of that.

So I wanted to delete Ubuntu from my laptop dual boot so I deleted it's partition. Then I went to reset my pc completly because I'm selling it, and when it went to reboot, a console prompt came up saying GNU GRUB version 2.02. I have no idea what this is and have no idea how to operate it. I have close to 0 knowledge about pcs so I am stuck. Rebooting only brings me back to the same console prompt. I am using a Toshiba Satellite L50-B.

I have created a manuals package. The package has a main file that everything else is linked to. I can create a self extracting exe program from pkzip application. What I don't know how to do is have the program create a shortcut to the main file from this program. The first one simply turns Hibernation off, disables Fast Startup, and deletes the system file hiberfil.sys. I'm not aware of connection with Sleep or waking up on a trigger. I have these settings, as stated, on my machine, and I can still put it to sleep and wake it up. I'm not familiar with the last four at all, although sleep states are usually (I think) set in the BIOS. Whatever is set there is available in the OS. S0-S4, I think. Maybe S5.

A little more info here: NO Hibernation just SLEEP

Also, you might want to check your advanced power plan settings to see if you have enabled wake timers.

Essentially I have dug a hole deeper and deeper, and now I am stuck.
So I had a normal Windows 10 computer and tried to dual boot Kali Linux. I shrunk the hard drive and ran Kali through a USB all worked fine. Once I installed it and tried to boot into it, the login page was blank except for the default background. When I restarted it, I couldn't get into windows because an error that stated "Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change may be why" etc etc. I pressed enter and it got me into the Kali boot loader, where I could select Kali or advanced. In advanced, there was an option called windows recovery, which led straight into my original windows. Windows was working, but I had to get through Kali to do so.
Later on, I wanted to redo the whole Kali dual boot thing. I deleted the partition in windows disk management, and also saw what may have been the culprit, which was the Windows Partition hadn't been set as the active one, whatever that means. I restarted with the USB with Kali plugged in. The error message popped up once again, but now there is a grub recovery terminal after I press enter. I have tried doing LS in the grub loader, f8 when the computer started to boot and load all the options. But it hasn't worked yet. I don't have any data that is TOO important, but still, I would like to get back to windows. I have the possibility of getting the windows recovery disk, but I would like to avoid that path seeing as I don't think I have one...
I can us... Read more

Answer:Windows 10 Not Booting, Going to Grub Recovery Fro

Changing and altering the partition would definitely caused the problems. If you have a full Windows recovery USB booting from this should allow you to restore the hard drive/computer back to how you originally got it, it may delete everything or it may put files etc into a folder called Windows.old.
If you want to duel boot Kali Linux it would be easier to install it onto a second Hard.

As Windows to Go is only available for ENTERPRISE versions and booting from a VHD requires there to be an OS already installed on the physical machine I was wondering if we could "Borrow" a trick from Linux.

Is it possible to install a Mini GRUB boot loader on a partition on an external HDD and on a second partition boot a Windows system.

Note here -- I want a RUNNING WINDOWS SYSTEM -- not an install / recovery / "Win PE" type system -- but a full Windows system that will work even if there is NO usable INTERNAL HDD drive in the computer.

Googling shows quite a few ways of either creating an INSTALL disk (HDD) or booting a VHD neither of which are what I want.

Using GRUB and booting an external HDD in theory should work -- and this should "almost replicate" a Windows to Go system.

Anybody tried this and got it working.

(I've had an external USB Linux system with VMware player installed -- that method works but the Windows system is quite slow even on an external USB3 drive -- running a Windows system natively should be a lot better).

I've actually got a spare SSD which I want to use for this -- I replace a 128 GB drive with a new Samsung 256 GB drive as I got a great bargain on it -- 99 GBP LESS 20% VAT which I got back at customs at the airport.

I'll use the SATA==>USB3 connector for connecting to the PC.
(Another possibility might be to get the Linux boot loader to load a Windows VHD from the external drive as well -- b... Read more

Hi. I had a dual boot Vista/Ubuntu but decided to remove Ubuntu because I wanted to switch to 100% Vista and then a Virtual PC with Ubuntu.
So I went into diskmanagement and removed the partitions containing Ubuntu and allocated the free space to my other partitions.
Everything seemed ok. However, when I restarded the computer I get the error mentioned in the title.
I would be forever grateful if someone could take their time and help me with this. I know it's my fault for being stupid but please help.

I tried using my Vista DVD and "repair my PC" but it can't even find my Vista installation... What can I do?

Answer:Trouble Booting (grub Loader Error 22)

The grub loader is looking for Ubuntu - and since it can't find it, it's giving you an error. If you were able to previously boot to your Vista installation and now you can't - I suspect that something in that was done in Disk Management has "hosed" your Windows partition.

If the repair doesn't work, then I'd have to suggest starting over with a full, clean install.

I'm a new linux user who has been experimenting with linux for a month now. I want to use boot magic as my bootloader because my pc is a family pc and it's just easier to use for my family. Well this is how i tried to do this. First I used partition magic to create a linux partition and swap partition so I could install Kubuntu on my pc. After I did that I installed boot magic as my boot loader. Then when I tried to install linux on my computer, it couldn't read the partition I made with partition magic(which was active for installation). I reformatted the partition and installed linux but then when I loaded windows and checked partition magic it gave me an error.(I figure its becuase I reformatted the partition) Right now both OS work fine but I could only use Grub as my boot loader,,but I would really like to use BootMagic. If any body could help me with a solution....or perhaps recommend a different distribution(with ease of use in mind) that allow this.....I would really appreciate it. By the way my friend recommended Slackware to me, I would also like to hear you opinion of this distribution and experience....Thank You.

Answer:dual booting linux with bootmagic instead of grub....Help

Grub is easy to use. I haven't tried using Bootmagic so I recommend using Grub or Lilo. As for slackware, it is an 'advanced linux distro'. If you like installing linux with nice and colorful GUI's and dont want to always edit text files, then slackware is not for you. But using slackware can help you learn how linux works.

I'd recommend Fedora or Suse for you. I haven't used Fedor or Suse yet but as what I've read, it's good for beginners on linux.

BTW: Slackware was the first the distro I've ever used

Hi every one...I currently installed kali linux on my virtual box, but as times goes on i noticed that some features were not fully usable under the virtualisation environment such as the NAT and Bridged network protocols and some other network issues. I decided to dual boot kali with my Win10 wich is my primary OS, I followed the neccesary procedure like creating a bootable kali pendrive, disabling secure boot, enabling Legacy mode, disabling the fast boot, creating a free partition and so on.....The installation went smooth and perfect but I was unable to boot into kali's GRUB after the restart, instead, my machine boot into win10 and not even the so called black screen appeared, I wiped the partitioned space i used for the installation and started the installation all over with different pendrives, sd cards and DVDs and even downloading another ISO image with the intention that either the pendrive or the image had been corrupted but the sha1 sum is still the same with the one on the official website. I also tried other methods like using the Easy BCD toolkit and i got an error message "Due to limitations set by microsoft, many of EasyBCD features can not be used in EFI, and BCD edit to create a new entry but instead i got two win10 on my pc installing other linux distro like arch and backbox did the same... This is a brand new windows 8 system that was sold to a customer. He brought it in for being unable to boot into windows after having used it for a couple of weeks, and he demonstrated the issue to me. It literally just boots to grub. This customer is a basic windows user. No experience with linux or dual booting. He uses it for email. I have never come across this particular problem before, so I ran the normal partition tools to see if the table looked proper for a windows 8 machine. Everything checks out ok, however it is still booting to a grub prompt!!!!

Answer:New windows 8 asus laptop, booting to Grub prompt?

Killdisk first + clean Windows install.

If he never tried to play with Linux and GRUB is on there, something went crazy on him.

I need some help, but probably don't have a full grasp on the problem, so don't really know how to ask for help. I will describe what I have and hopefully, it will help to describe what I want to accomplish.

I have a Linksys router with DD-WRT installed. I am able to SSH/Telnet into the router. I would like to be able to reboot or shutdown my computer remotely from the command line during a Putty/SSH session.

Here is how I make the session connection: In Putty, I enter
the static IP address and port (default is 22) under "Session".
Under "SSH > Tunnels" I enter the "source port" (again, 22)
and "Destination" (ex - 192.168.0.5:3389), then hit "Add", then "Open"

This opens a command line, where I enter "user" and "pwd"
(the defaults are root and admin). I am now connected to my
router and I can use Remote Desktop to get control over my
remote computer (using XP Pro).

My question is: While at the command prompt, is there a
command to reboot or shutdown my remote computer? Is there a list
of other commands that are available here?

BTW, at the command prompt, I can start my remote computer (Wake on LAN) by typing the following command:
/usr/sbin/wol -i 192.168.0.5 MA:CAD:RE:SS:44
(where the last portion is the MAC address)

I want to create a setup whereas a command line command can be run from any directory/folder, without having to be in the directory/folder whereas the command line command resides ?

Answer:Executing command line command anywhere ?

Add the directory the cmd or bat files resides in to the PATH environment variable.

Quote:
To check or modify the system PATH environment variable, do the following:

XP: Right clock on My Computer
Vista, 7: Right click on Computer
Windows 8, 10: Right click on This PC

Select Properties

Vista, 7, 8, 10: Click on Advanced System Properties on the left

On the Advanced tab, click on Environment Variables
Under System Variables, scroll down to Path
Select it then click Edit

An easy way to look at all of it is to right click on the highlighted Variable Value field and select copy, then start Notepad and paste the data into there. That way you can easily look at all of it.

It's also a lot easier to make changes in Notepad then copy and paste the changed data back into the Path Variable Value field.

Click Ok as needed to exit when done

Okay, here's the tenitive plan. This PC has a 30 gig hd and a 320 Gb hd.

I want Grub on a separate partition so my system will still boot if I uninstall one of the OS's

30gb
partition 1 -Grub
partition 2 -Arch
Partition 3 Vista

320gb
partition 1 - misc linux files (home directory)
partition 2 - misc vista files
partition 3 - a large partition for data.

Is there anything I'm overlooking?

Answer:Dual booting w/ 2 hard drives and seperate partition for Grub.

thats not how I would have set it up...but, anyway
Here is how I do it.

I put Vista on my 200gb drive. Then I split up my 300gb drive into 150gb, then the rest amongst three partitions for nix.

I put all of my Vista data on the 150gb partition, and grub on the /boot partition I set for nix.

Then I use EasyBCD to have the Vista bootloader invoke Grub on the other drive.

No fuss, no muss.

You are using GRUB bootloader to boot windows in a dual boot environment.

What you need is to update GRUB. You may get some ideas here.

Is there any way for me to get back to my old install of windows without having to reinstall it and all my old programs because i had alot of stuff for school on there.

i even tried using a program that would reset my mbr but it still went to the grub rescue screen and i looked and the only partitions i have left are the ones that are used for the windows system

Hi I am looking at Grub4dos since my recent foray into all things bootloaders. I am gaining a little footing with what I can and can't do (practically!) Although it was definitely trickier than I thought (or I just don't have the same time like I used to... ) Anyhow, I am looking at Grub because it sounds easier to learn the Grub2, and all my systems are pre EFI bios setups. I am looking for a 'Hoyle' maintainable setup. Therefore I decided to "initially" install W7 on C: and XP on D: (both on primary partitions)

But... also I have an existing XP image that was originally installed on C: Now I read somewhere, someone had a setup that would boot into a Master boot loader, presumably Grub, and then select one of two OSs and assign it C: and run it. and the other would become D: while leaving E,F,G, etc intact. That would really be a sweet setup for me because I could then use my existing XP image still since it would still think it is on C while running...

So my question is before I dive headlong into Grub. I know it would be the ideal bootloader for multi (pre EFI bios) But can it assign letters to partitions? so as to switch C and D like that while leaving other partitions assigns as they are? Just looking for a little confirmation and any tips. Here goes nothin'...

Answer:Dual Boot W7/XP using Grub - Can grub assign letters to partitions?

Why would you need to use Grub?

Hi Alvin,

First, if you aren't prompted for where to download files, see the following article to make sure that happens: Not Prompted to Specify Download Folder for File.

Second, if you are prompted but don't like where it selects and want it to be a different location (like the folder on your desktop), check out the following article: How to change the default download directory for Internet Explorer | Windows Reference.

Question: DOS Command Line

Hi there-

Just reorganising my Library and for reasons I won't bore you with, need to do some mass amendments to Filenames to get rid of extraneous Info as I'm tight on Space.

So, for instance, I have a Folder (DIRectory) with one hundred PDF, Mobi, RAR, ZIP, CBR and CBZ files in it all with filenames in the following format :-

Henry Rider Haggard (Victorian Novelist, Africa Hand) [Title of Short Story/Novel/Graphic Novel].???

As :-

a) I do happen to know who H Rider Haggard is (having read my first book of his 55 years ago when I was Ten)
b) All the Files are going to go into a Directory (Folder) Entitled "Henry Rider Haggard" (in case I suddenly get struck down with Oldtimer's disease)

then I want to get rid of the words "Henry Rider Haggard (Victorian Novelist, Africa Hand)" which is common to every Filename.

My latest attempt at a Command Line blanket change from within the Folder (Directory) was the DOS command -

REN "Henry Rider Haggard (Victorian Novelist, Africa Hand)"*.??? *.???

I have also tried :-

Using the different extensions (.CBR .ZIP .RAR etc ) to change them 20 or 30 at a time
Using the same Format but *.* instead of *.???
Using no Inverted Commas on the part of the Description that I want to get rid of

There is no such thing as Dos. Dos went the way of the Dodo bird, after 98 died. You have a Command window, that you can do certain things in. But what you are wanting to do, I am lost. It sounds like you are telling a story, not asking a question.

If you want to change a file name, you do it from Explorer in the Desktop. If you want to edit a file, you do it from what ever program was used to create the file.

Hi,

I would like to know what is the command for delete files and shortcuts on current user desktop.

Is it del C:\documents and settings\*\local settings\desktop\popup blocker stops popups.lnk?

Using winxp pro. I know it is easlier to use windows explorer but I am doing this for interest.

Thank you.

Answer:Need some help on command line pls.

You are roughly right. When you open the DOS box, it will automatically be logged on the current user's account: C:\Documents and Settings\Account Name\

from there, change to the folder where the file or shortcut is located (for example, type CD Desktop, then press [ENTER]. Then type DEL (name of file or shorcut) and press [ENTER]

For stubborn files which won't delete while Windows is running, open the DOS box then end the EXPLORER.EXE process which quits the Windows shell but leaves the DOS box open for you to issue the DEL command on the stubborn file. When done, bring up the task-manager again (CTRL-ALT-DEL), log-off then log-on to restart the Windows shell.

I recently installed new software that requires adding a command line to allow the software to restart and configure itself at start up. The manufacturer, who hasn't responded to my e-mail gives instructions to automatically load this software already configured by using the "command line". I'm using XP Pro. I believe that it's the last line below that needs to be loaded but my question is how do I so this. Here are the manufacturers instructions.
Usage:
VSPEmulator.exe <config file path> <options>
Config file is a special file with extension ".vspe" that can be created using VSPE "Save as..." command.
Options are additional parameters that can be passed to VSPE to manage its basic behavior.
-minimize : minimize VSPE dialog
-hide_splash : do not show splash window
Example:

Execute VSPE and automatically load configuration file
VSPEmulator.exe c:/config_files/main.vspe

Execute, load configuration file, hide splash and minimize VSPE
VSPEmulator.exe c:/config_files/main.vspe -minimize -hide_splash

I've been messing around with the ftp program in Windows XP's command prompt, and I've got something odd happening.

I uploaded a copy of AVG to my own website so I wouldn't have to hunt for it and so I could use this ftp program to download it. After giving the "get" command with the file name, the file downloads. But when it's done...if I go to run it, a new command prompt window opens for a split second, shows nothing, and disappears. This has happened on two different PCs now.

If I use a web browser to download the files, it works. I'm not sure what to make out of this. Could I be doing something wrong?

Not that I'm aware of, but if you click the start orb, type "cmd" (without quotes) then right-click "cmd.exe" in the search results, you can then select "Run as Administrator" (but you already knew that...)

Here is a part of the switches available to CMD.EXE (You can get more by opening a command line window, then type "CMD /?" (without quotes) and pressing <ENTER>:

Hi Guy's and Girls,

Just first off I've never been too good with CMD and only an Apprentice in my company I work for.

Now something I've wanted to do for awhile was to make the following but I don't necassirealy I know how to do this in one batch file:

I would need a Batch file that is able to read the follow;
Find Current Hard Drive Space and What is used (Dir can do this as far as im aware)
Convert the CMD information Into either a Excel Document or a .txt format.

If anyone could lend me a hand with this that would be great.

P.S the drives I want to make a log of are Server Destinations so i can monitor their disk space daily.

Answer:Command Line - Help

I don't know if this might help. I have a command line program that gives the free space in B KB MB GB using the largest appropriate. It's df.exe for disk free

[C:\Program Files\JPSoft\TCCLE13x64]df /?

df.exe 1.0.9.1 Copyright 2014 favessoft.com

Usage: df [ C D \\Name\Share ]
free disk space in one of B KB MB GB

( Truncated to 3 decimal places. )

example:
[C:\Program Files\JPSoft\TCCLE13x64]df c
383.848 GB Free on c:

If you would like to try it, it is free and may be downloaded from my page here:
Miles Ahead Software

Edit: you can use command line redirection to output to a file.
For example to append the result to test.txt you can do
df c: >>test.txt

Edit2: You may specify more than one drive on the line.
Example:
[C:\Program Files\JPSoft\TCCLE13x64]df c e
383.848 GB Free on c:
65.669 GB Free on e:

[C:\Program Files\JPSoft\TCCLE13x64]

Question: Command Line Help

Hey, can anyone help me. I am trying to make a File using CMD edit which could dump all the tasks running. I can?t figure the code; I got "tasklist" part but then....
So I am a little lost, :dead: well actually I have no idea what I am doing . And while you are at it, can someone recommend me a program which has all the command lines and what they do. Or even those "click a command" programs (if there is one). Thanks.

(for the :suspiciou "why do I want it" folks, well I would copy the file on my USB disk drive, take it to the cafe down below and see which programs they are running - there is this program which, when I type "Patch" in the internet explorer shuts it down and so I am not able to download all those Quake, Farcry, Doom, Painkiller, Halflife and etc. patches which improve performance and add a little more game play. Then I would make another file which would shutdown those processes. Hope I am not confusing you guys.)

Answer:Command Line Help

Easiest way I can think of is to use
tasklist > "directory you want file in"\tasklist.txt
But I'm not sure I understand what you're asking for here. Perhaps you can try to clarify a bit?

Question: DEL command line

If I have created a new folder on my C: file and named it: "Odd Bods" for example.

Using the DEL Command Prompt in XP, what is the exact syntax to forcibly delete it?

I have tried by opening the Command Prompt and typing in "CD \" then enter to bring up the cursor "C:\>". Then I have typed: "Del /F Odd Bods" and "enter". The message then comes up; "Are you sure? y/n". I then type: "y" and enter, but the folder is not deleted.

Help!

Answer:DEL command line

If folder is on desktop:

Start
Run
Enter 'cmd /k' (no quotes)
Enter 'cd\' (will get you the C:\ prompt)
Enter 'cd\Documents and Settings\{your user name}\Desktop'
Enter 'dir /w'

If you can see the item, Enter 'erase [filename]'

del [filename] also works - for a directory (maybe folders too) RD [directory] works

edit: if you do the Start, run, cmd /k thing then type 'help' you'll get a list of the limited MSDOS commands remaining in the poor excuse for DOS XP supports.

For details on those, type, for example, 'help del' and you'll get the possible options.

Question: command line

Dear TS,

Currently I am working in access, fine tuning a little database.
In this little proggie I have made a button that directly links to a .bat-file that does nothing but open the folder H:/foto (Dutch)

In that folder are several kinds of criminal offenses.

It works like this for the user:

They click the photo-button, the folder opens and they will find by manual search the picture corresponding to the crime report. the pictures in that folder are ordered in sub-categories for a clear view.

What I'd d like to achieve is that the security-officials ONLY type something like "stepped on no-stepping-on-grass-sign" in a text bar and that they then click the photo-button and the H:/foto/stepped on no-stepping-on-grass-sign folder opens.

I know the idea of typing (part of a) directory and then press a button is just as lame as just viewing a folder that has only 25 sub folders anyway, but it's just what the security-officials want...

Thank you very much for your attention and help,

sincerely,

Meneer Geerts.

Answer:command line

I have an idea...don't know if it would work. Make a table in access; query to search the table on the partial name; attribute in the table is the full directory name or even the entire command line string. Put this on a macro that sends the result of the query to the command line?

Ok short version first

I need to find a way to put the output of one program into the command line of another.

Dates.exe -> 6-3-2005
Zip %dates%.zip *.html
output into 6-3-2005.zip
is basicly what I want to do

If that doesn't make sence heres the long version

I have a stat program that generates html files, now in order to sort them I want to use the date as a filename for the zip file. So I have a date program that outputs the right format and a command line archive utility(zip program). .... MY Problem is I can't figure out how to set a variable from a txt file or output of the Date program, or use the output of the Date program in the command line of the zip program.

If anyonw can help please do.

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I wanted to ask a tricky question.

I want to be able to access another PC via telnet (this I can do easily via RADMIN software) which gives the the CMD prompt access.

I then want to be able to launch a Sound file (or similiar) so that the user on the other end just hears whatever sound I have triggered (i.e. it doesn't have to launch WMP or similiar software).

Any ideas on how to do this?

I know it can be done as a clever guy I used to work with set it up and it was quite comical in the office when he was able to trigger cow noises, etc from anyone's PC by remoting in via the backend.

Cheers

Dave

Answer:run exe via command line

I don't know the answer, I just want to subscribe in case someone else does !

I suppose if you could figure out how the default Windows sounds are triggered you could find the command line to run them.

Question: AOL Command Line?

Foolishly signed up for AOL broadband (out of sheer laziness, I really should have known better!) and have found their online help to be a bit hazy in the area of commandline/batch commands.

What I want to be able to do is exit AOL, confirm my exit, exit AOL communicator (the nearest thing to POP3 that AOL offer) and shut down a few other programs I use all at once by means of a batch file.

Any ideas whether this is doable (the batch side of things I'm happy with, just the AOL command line stuff I'm not sure on).

Thanks guys.

I was given a laptop to try an repair. None of the applications would open, it either asked how you want to open it or say no application found. After several tries I was able to do a virus scan. Couple Trojans and virus. Still no change in laptop. I googled the question and found someone asking a question with similar problem & was told to download this scan. I figured I had nothing to lose the laptop wasn't working so I outsmarted the virus & downloaded the program... After downloading, it needed to reboot. but before I allowed it to reboot I noticed the applications suddenly working... Rebooted & scanned. Its came up with 4 Trojans, 4 viruses & over 200 accounts of spyware. To remove them was $40 with $30 mail in rebate... My friend suggested that what I had downloaded was one of those scams that give you the Trojan & make you think they are getting rid of it for a price. They suggested I do a killdisk to wipe out the HDD and reinstall the OS.
Killdisk worked, it says I need to do a FDISK & FORMAT before I can download the new OS. I can't figure out how to do that. I get a blank black screen with a curser but it won't take any code. I have tried downloading the OS (windows XP) and it says it can't find any hard disk drives.

What am I doing wrong?

I've just finished putting together an OI/Napp-It install for our VMWare backup datastore and the server I am using has only 2 gig NIC ports and 1 card slot which is taken up by the RAID card. It's one of the UnixSurplus Rackable servers.

I want to be able to put a USB dongle on the server for SSH and web GUI access and use the 2 NIC ports to go on our ISCSI/storage network so we are isolated completely. I'm just having some issues trying to find a good how to on doing this in OI. It seems much easier in the Debian/Ubuntu worlds, so I am assuming I am missing a keyword to help narrow my searches.

I have 2 different dongles plugged in to see if I can get 1 to work. One is a Winstars WS-UL220G and the other is a generic 10/100 dongle which listed Linux on the box. Nothing seems to list Solaris specifically, so maybe I am just making an incorrect assumption about USB support.

Can anyone point me in the right direction to get at least one of these setup correctly?

Answer:OpenIndiana USB ethernet support

Hardware support of Solaris is mainly given on typical server hardware. I do not know any USB to ethernet adapter to work with OI/Solaris.

On the other hand, if you use iSCSI, all other services are listening on your NICs as well. You cannot exclude them from a NIC beside using the firewall or flow settings with flowadm or using other protocols like FC.

So your options are either local management or management via one of your NICs.

First things first, I have basically no experience with anything Solaris related. I'm quite familiar with Linux however.

I recently set up my server running OpenIndiana. It's installed to a random HD I had laying around, and I set up a ZFS mirror with my two Samsung F4's, giving me 2TB of redundant storage. I'm also running a couple VM's off this server temporarily using VirtualBox (web server and a media server), just until I build a proper virtualization/storage server.

Anyways, basically what I'm doing is just using OI for ZFS, and then I set up an NFS share for my media center VM (Ubuntu 10.10). I believe I have set things up properly, but I'm having permission issues whenever I try to download anything to the NFS share.

My mirrored pool is simply /data/. I created an NFS share for the directory /data/Media/, which contains a few folders within it for Music, Videos, etc. After reading a bit online, I appended my /etc/dfs/dfstab file in the following manner:

share -F nfs -o rw,root=192.168.0.111 /data/Media/Click to expand...

IP's are a bit weird because I'm not at home for awhile, but that's not important Pretty much that IP is just my media server, simple enough. I created the directory /nfs on my Ubuntu media server, and ran the following command:

sudo mount 192.168.0.103:/data/Media /nfsClick to expand...

Where *.103 is my server. Basically I'm unable to create/add... Read more

Answer:Having some troubles with my NAS (Running OpenIndiana)

not sure this will help you or not but i had a problem creating new folders/adding files when i had setup a ubuntu server box. The step I missed was that the samba permissions dont override the filesystem permissions. So I had to go in and make the file folders have user write privlages and that would enable my samba sharing to go through.

Answer:Booting takes 15 min

Did you back up the registry before 'cleaning' it?

If not, check with the app to see if it made an auto backup. If it did, restore it.

Or you could try to use a restore point created prior to using the app. If one exists, use the restore point and cross your fingers.

(Start>type 'restore' >select 'Create a restore point' > then select system restore. Follow the prompts.)

And for future reference, keep away from registry cleaners unless you know what you're cleaning. As you've discovered they do far more harm than good. You've essentially broken your registry.

I open a new command line window and it defaults me to the root directory of my C: drive. I am trying to access my desktop at c:\documents and settings\username\desktop and when I try to cd to this directory this is what I get:

Code:
C:\>cd doc*
Invalid directory

C:\>cd Documents and Settings
Too many paramaters - and

C:\>cd Documents*
Invalid directory

WTF? I very rarely use DOS anymore, in fact this is a work laptop and I think it is time to install cygwin, at least Linux command line works Anyone have any ideas?

Answer:Win XP command line problems

It'll want the 8 character shortcut for filenames larger than 8 characters. The format is the first 6 characters followed by a ~1. So "Documents and settings" would be "docume~1".

Try "cd docume~1" and see what happens.

Also - cd doc* won't work in dos. The CD command doesn't accept wildcards (the * )

Question: unzip command line

I found a program called unzip.exe. This program works well for unzipping files via a batch file. My question is does anybody know of a way via unzip.exe or any other unzip program with will append the zip name as a folder? I.E. If I want to extract abc.zip to C:\zip. I want it to extract C:\zip\abc

Answer:unzip command line

Save this as batunzip.bat for example.
Then to unzip, use batunzip add.zip
Don't know which unzip program you found, so have no idea of how the command line should be set.
Just substitute %1 for the file name to be unzipped, and %DEST% for the output folder name.
If the unzip program can create the output folder, the 2nd line isn't needed.

Code:
Set DEST=C:\zip\%~n[COLOR=Red]1[/COLOR]
If not Exist "%DEST%" MD "%DEST%"
unzip "%~[COLOR=Red]1[/COLOR]" "%DEST%"
The 1 is a numeral one, not a lower case L

Does anyone know where I could find a list of the command line parameters for QuickTime 5 when invoked from NT's command prompt? Does QuickTime even support command line parameters?

I have a large number of small files that I would like to export to another format, and it would be easier if I could batch process them with a Windows Script.

I have tried using other conversion programs, and nothing works as well as QuickTme's internal exporter.

When I moved into XP from my computer I really didn't like Documents and Settings XP uses, so I created a My Documents in my root directory, similar to what Win98SE uses.

Nowadays I'm running some software that needs the Command line as a equivalent to DOS, and I ran into an odd problem.

My Documents folder seems to be invisible to the Command line. I could not enter the folder using the Command line at all. I solved the problem by renaming the folder to Bills Documents, but it is kinda odd.

Is there an attribute I'm missing somewhere? Thanks.

Answer:XP Command Line and My Documents

In both My Documents and Bills Documents did the folder name contain a "space"? Did you try the shortened version like mydocu~1 or maybe "my documents"?

I am working through a FBI virus notebook running Windows 7.

Using Kickstart I know which files I need to remove.

The file is "skype.dat" in the App Data\Roaming folder.

When I go into command prompt from the Repair Console the App data folder is hidden.

I'm currently trying the shards attribute but I'm getting alot of "access denied" reports from tmp files. I can't tell if it's endlessly looping or if it has yet to run through the entire folder.

Is there another way to get into this folder? I've done this process several times before but this is the first time I've been unable to access the App Data folder. There isn't a password set for the user.

I remember now that I'm signed on as the user...I've no idea if it's an admin account or not. I'll try to access another account and work at it from that angle.

My question is this: What would the proper DOS command be to make hidden folders visible? Not just visible but also to manipulate them and the files within? Is the -s-h-a-r/d/s the only way?

Answer:Solved: Command line help!!!

EDIT: Figured it out. Thanks anyway.

Help please I am pulling my hair out.

I use a desktop shortcut to run an application called get_iplayer.cmd located in the directory c:\program files\get_iplayer

The line in the Target of the shortcut properties therefore reads:

C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /k "c:\program files\get_iplayer\get_iplayer.cmd"

When the shortcut is run (as administrator) the following lines are returned:

'c:\program' is not a recognized internal or external command, operable program or batch file
c:\windows\system32>
However if I repeat the command again by running cmd and use CD to get to manually change directories the program runs as expected.

What is going wrong?

Answer:What is wrong with this command line?

This is the dreaded space in the filename issue. When you run a command with spaces in the path you must double up the double quotes as shown in the example
"Spaces in Program Path:"
CMD.exe (Command Shell) | Windows CMD | SS64.com

I want to control where on the screen my application opens. For example, I want Excel to open in the top right corner of my screen.

Thanks!

As always, I come to the forums as a last resort. You guys haven't let me down so far...

Anyway, I'm trying to figure out how to run Symantec Ghost Console (part of the Solution Suite) completely from the command line. In terms of functionality, everything is working from the GUI, but I want to replicate everything that I've done there in the command line.

I've tried running "ghost.exe", but it won't run outside of DOS (and I need to stay in Windows). I know that "ngcons.exe" lets me execute tasks, but I need to be able to create tasks, place computers into groups, etc.

I have Ghost Console running on a Win2K3 machine, and a bunch of other computers running Ghost Client (also on Win2K3 machines). Any ideas?

Answer:Ghost from the command line
