Downloads, Vista, IE7/FF sudden stops...

Question: Downloads, Vista, IE7/FF sudden stops...

I've noticed a strange issue with Vista 64 in that I can be downloading a file and then inexplicably it will stop and not resume. At first I thought it was just my connection, but it turned out that both IE and FF are acting the same way regardless of the website. If I did the same download on another machine using XP or 2K, it would download from start to finish. On this very same machine, in XP, downloads have no issue, but as soon as I'm in Vista, I will have a hard time doing a large file download...

anyone else notice this issue?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My computer is a laptop Toshiba computer. I was working as normal and I do remember I disconnected my USB for my mouse before trying to shut down the computer. I went to the start button to log off as I normally do, and the start window totally froze and would not let me log off as normal. I became suspicious that this may be a virus attack so I shut down immediately. So I tried to reboot, but I have been totally unsuccessful.
As I try to restart the computer, it gives me the option to "repair" and I have tried to do that, but the "windows loading files" bar that appears loads about halfway, then it comes to a total halt. I'm given an unexpected I/O error and the letters are "OXC00000e9"
The next window that appears says "Windows encountered a problem communicating with the device connected to your computer (Which currently I do not have anything connected) caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as external USB drive while device in use or by faulty hardware such as hard drive or CD ROM drive that is failing." At the top of this message the page reads "Windows Boot Manager"
I have tried to reboot using F7 but no help, I tried safe mode and safe mode with networking.
I don't have reboot disks.
Is there anyone that can please help me?
I would gladly pay if you can direct me on how to resolve this or what I can do to rescue my files.

I've never had a problem with tab stops in Word before but all of a sudden today....I can no longer seem to do anything at ALL with them.

With the ruler showing and the desired text highlighted, it appears I've accidentally done SOMETHING which has resulted in the cursor looking like two arrows (up and down), each in their own little box and positioned vertically with respect to each other. I can't get this to go away and I can't do anything with it - can't set or move tabs, can't select a different kind of tab stop. Nothing.

I'm working in Office 2010 on Windows 7.

Please help

Let me start by saying I'm sorry if I am posting this in the wrong place - I don't even know if this is a hardware or software problem, which gives you some idea of the level of idiot you're dealing with here. In the last 10 days or so, for no reason I can think of, I've been having download problems. Any podcast or music I download comes out corrupted, i.e. choppy like a scratched CD. This happens no matter which of various sites I'm downloading from, so it's not a problem with any one site, and these are respectable long-established places I download from, not sketchy legal-grey-areas on the fringes of the web.

So far, I have:

- reset Firefox
- tried using a different browser
- reset my router (more than once)
- run full scans for virus, spyware, and malware infections
- run checkdisk and a memory diagnostic
- tweaked and finally uninstalled Quicktime
- tried downloading to a different destination

None of this has done the job. At the same time, Steam cannot seem to download the new Skyrim patch for me. It keeps suspending the download, and says I have a 0 bytes download rate. shows my up- and download rates as being their normal selves, and gave me an A grade, with 0% packet loss. I'm completely stumped, this doesn't seem to make any sense.

I cannot face the prospect of commuting every day without podcasts and music to get me through - please help!

I have a seagate expension 1tb usb 3.0. When I use it in my gaming computer the transfer stop randomly and slowly transfers. Take 30mins to transfer 10gb. As well I can't use any programs, its like if windows is giving all its resources for the file transfer.

Answer:Usb 3.0 transfer sudden stops

You should remember that the data is transferred to the destination, only as fast it is being read off the source.

USB 2.0 has a maximum theoretical speed limit of 60 MB/s. Actually, it is only today, several years after the launch of USB 2, that USB 2 devices are able to fully exploit this speed (even then, there are not too many which can do this). Most of the USB 2 devices today max out at 30-35 MB/s. I've already given the reason for this, the read-write speeds of devices bottlenecks the transfer process.

So for USB 3, don't expect speeds of 400 MB/s +; since even though the data could be transferred at that rate, it cannot be read off the source HDD or written to the external drive at the same rate. Now if you were to hook up a superfast SSD to the dock, & also had a similar speed SSD in your system, then the transfer process would be definitely faster, since both drives could read & write lighteningly fast.
So it is more likely that the transfers you are doing are bottlenecked by the storage drives, in particularl, their sequential read/write speeds; not due to the fault of USB 3.

Hello everyone, I have been encountering this problem the last year and it started to really pissing me off. I bought an ASUS M31AD computer with the following specs :
Processor Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz
Video card Name: AMD Radeon HD 8570 2GB
Installed Memory: 8,00 GB DDR3
One month after I bought my pc , one day the monitor stopped receiving signal and a weird noise started. I closed the pc from the button and opened it again, since it didn't respond to anything else. My pc worked fine for several days until I had the same problem. I contacted the company which I bought it from and sent my pc to italy so they could "fix it" (2 yeas guarantee). I got my pc back 3 weeks later ,telling me the problem was the processor which they changed . Not much since i got it back i am encountering the same problem almost everyday. I can't sent my pc back to the company since I really need my pc for my work. Any ideas guys ? I am so angry !! :@

Answer:PC stops working all of a sudden until I reset it

Go to Control Panel and look for warning triangles on USB controllers - I had a similar issue and it was the USB3 Controller driver. I re installed the driver and it worked.

Hi, i had a few problems with my computer so took it to a man to fix. He fixed it fine. few days later I unplug my Seagate Free Agent 1tb harddrive like i've done a million times, go to plug it in later and it is not recognised by the computer (ie cannot be seen in my computer, disk management and device manager) But the little safely remove hardware thing is there in the task bar? I tried using that to stop the device but that didnt work.
Thankfully though once I restart my computer it appears again. which leads me to think that the computer has some sort of autorun problem?

HD works on other computers as per normal. Other usb devices work fine on the computer.

I have not taken it back to the man because It could very well be something i've done and not willing to pay another 200 bucks for him to tell me that.

I am running vista home premium 32bit on acer aspire 5536 laptop, amd dual core 2.10 ghz, 3 gig ram.

any help much appreciated

Hello all, i just moved to a a new place, there are 5 people sharing this place (not sure what it's called in english).

Ever since i set my desktop up here i've been having an issue downloading .. anything. I can download torrents just fine, without issues. However - when there's a launcher or anything like it (Ex: Video game launchers/downloads) my downloads will stop randomly, by that i mean the download speed will completely drop after about 3-10 seconds, sometimes i get lucky and the download keeps going for a couple of minutes, making it completely random. This also happens in my internet browser(s). I am at the end of my wits when it comes to this.

I'm particularly good at networking thus i come here, i am good at following directions.

In detail, this is what happens: I press download, it starts downloading, after a couple of seconds the download will completely stop progressing and the timer keeps going up until it just tells me to wait for an eternity. This issue does NOT occur when i'm downloading torrents but does happen whenever i try downloading games or anything large from my browser. The downloads ALWAYS work in the beginning but after a while they'll just die (unless i'm torrenting).

I have no issues streaming streams or watching youtube or anything like that.

I live with 5 other people, as stated above. I'm not sure that has any impact on this issue.

I literally reinstalled my windows 10 minutes ago, which did not work. Which should eliminate the p... Read more

Well, Im addicted to Azureus and fan subbed anime. So, Im always downloading and uploading a lot.

My problem is that after a while ( a few hours ) of solid downloading/uploading, the internet will completely cease to work on this computer. I have to reboot it. The other computer that is on the same router, still gets onto the net fine.

I have a Intel Pro 1000 CT integrated network card on my Abit IC7-G with the newest drivers. Is there something I can configure differently to prevent this from happening? I hate leaving downloads/uploads over night to find that 3 hours into them, they just quit working.

I've just started experiencing a problem with downloads lately. This has been covered in other posts but no answer.

The problem started yesterday with my downloads. I try to download something from (One of their radio shows) and the download stopped at approximately 10meg of the 136meg file. Thought it was their site so I went to another site ( to download a large file there) and the same thing happened this time it stopped at 20meg of 150 meg file. Thought then that it was my browser. Tried IE, FIREFOX and Chrome at both sites with no avail. Tried a download manager (DownThemAll!) and the problem persists.

Thought then that maybe a virus got in. Cleaned the drive first with CCLeaner then did a scan with SUPERAnitspyware and Malwarebyts Anit-Malware. Still no resolve.

Tried rebooting the computer and still same problem persists. Small files work fine but large files just stop and do nothing.

I'm currently using Windows XP with all latest updates. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Subject says it. The sound driver for Windows 10, XPS 13 9333 has been buggy since the beginning! I had to reboot several times per week to "reenable sound". Errors are both complete crashes of the sound driver (the speaker symbol turns red and Windows 10 offers to try to fix the problem - well, of course that doesn't do anything...), but now also this:
At random intervals sound just stops. The volume can still be controlled, I can't see an error in the Windows event log (but I'm not sure I looked everywhere), device manager for Realtek High Definition Audio shows the driver as working. I hear a brief 1/10th second loud white noise as sound stops and that's it. I have to reboot.

I have been having problems downloading either files or email attachments that were fairly large, say 4 mb or larger. I'm running XP, have 500 meg of memory, etc. Everything has been working fine except when I try to download any large file, the download would just quit about 1/2 way through. The computer wouldn't freeze, the download would just quit. On a hunch, I removed my Ativa router. Bam, problem solved. I just downloaded a 65 mb file with no problem. Other than buying a Linksys router does anyone have a suggested solution? Appreciate any help.

Hi, thanks for your time, I really appreciate that you take your time to read this.
I had problems long time ago, about a year... and you help me to deal with it, so I'm very confident in your help again. It's not the same problem I had before, I think this is a hardware problem, but you can tell me if it's so.

The problem is that my PC has a sudden shutdown, when I turn on my PC, it starts for a few seconds, then suddenly shutdown, then restart again by itself, but no signal on monitor, just the internal fans sounds and it seems is on, but don't.
After a few tries, and wait for about half an hour, I try again then starts the same way and again shutdowns, even I can see the logon screen, but sometimes shutdown.
I try again and with a little bit of lucky, it starts and works fine all the night long, without any problem (I know I'm in risk of fried up everything, but I'm just frustrated about this problem)
I changed the PSU about 8 months ago, I got an Agiler 600V (maybe a piece of crap) but that's the best I found.
I'm thinking about buy the Corsair 750V in amazon, but I want to know if this is the right choice for my problem.
Recently I change my UPS, cause I got an old APC500, it has about 5 years old, so, I think buying a new one, like this 750V Omega china made... :( would solve the problem, but it didn't.

Answer:Sudden shutdown on vista

You can try uninstalling the security patches, one by one, in reverse order
of installation. You may be able to identify the one that is causing the
problem. Once you find it, you will then have to choose between leaving a
security hole and having a computer that shuts down all by itself. The
above assumes of course that a security patch, or a combination thereof, is
causing the problem.

I have a custom-built computer - which has worked just fine until recently. A few days ago, I got a BSOD, and had to unplug the computer to re-boot it. It seemed to work fine then - but each night when I go to bed, it is ok, but in the morning it is off. When I boot it up, it tells me Windows shut down was not normal, and how do I want to re-boot. I choose "normal" as the other choices I have no idea what to do with.
Any help would be very appreciated!

I'm using vista 64 for the last 2 months and it worked quite good in general.
Yesterday after downloading some automatic updates (and i don't think this was the cause for what i specify next...) the system started working very slow, with sudden freezes, slow reaction to clicks on icons, starting programs etc. Another annoying issue that the system started booting very slow: after the green marker which shows after booting, there's a very long stop before i get the log on window. What's really strange is that i don't see the harddrive working in this seems like freeze, like the one happens when the windows is up and running.

My system is intel quad q6600 cpu, 4gb 800 mhz memory,gigabye dq6 680i motherboard,and new hitachi sata2 hardrives.

Does it sounds more like hardware problem? (till yesterday all was good!)or more like windows problem? (i have a backup of the system from 2 months ago, right after i installed the system, but no more backups and restore points....)

I'd really appreciate your advices on this.

This is a new computer, and it has been running flawlessly for the last few months with no problems, including games like TF2 or HL2. A few days ago, however, the system with suddenly lock up for seemingly no reason. It doesn't matter what I'm doing; when playing TF2, I can't go on for more that 15 minutes before the whole system freezes and I get a looping sound. When I'm simply online with Firefox surfing the web with a few tabs, all the applications running will just stop responding for a period of time. While writing this post, in fact, this happened After about 10 minutes it returned to normal. I am either forced to wait a very long time until the system starts running normally again or ctrl-alt-del then log off. Sometimes the system slows down so much that I can't do that and I have to give it a hard reset.

What is the reason for these random lock-ups? I don't think it could be a virus, since I do scans every day and don't do anything to warrant getting one, but who knows...

Yesterday everything was working great. Then today I take my computer and monitor to a shop. All I did there was connect a different mouse and keyboard. Needed to test some monitors there. Hooked up a different monitor.

Then I take it back home hook back up my original keyboard and mouse. Everything is working fine. Till I play wow and I seeing a drop in FPS by at least 50%. I even ran ati tool and did the rotating 3D view and thats can barely break 500fps. Even in classic mode it cant even break 1K FPS which was no problem before today.

I even reinstalled World of Warcraft. So i'm convinced its not the game but a problem somewhere in vista. I have no clue whats causing this. My system specs are in my signature. I even reinstalled directX hoping that may fix it. I feel like im using a 7600 GT right now. The power connector to the card is plugged in. I even reseated the graphics card as well.

This is vista 64 SP1

I think i'm going to haev to restore from a mirror backup. I just have no idea what could be causing this problem. All I did was move my computer to point A then back. But when World of Warcraft is down to around 15 fps, it affects everything in my system. Sound starts to get static. Task bar aninimation gets choppy. I've never had this problem before today.

Answer:Vista 64. All the sudden having FPS problems

Check your CPU and video card temps, and try reseating the coolers. It's possible that something got dislodged while you were moving the system and your components are throttling under load.

I installed vista x64 a few weeks back w/o a hitch and have been running smoothly since last night when I boot in and it says I have no sound device installed. I went to to get the latest driver (ver. 1.89) and installed it; however, when I rebooted and came back still says no sound device is installed. I check my bios to make sure onboard sound is still enabled and it is.

I went into device manager and noticed that "PCI simple communications controller" had a question mark beside it...could this be the culprit? Where could I get the driver for this? Before I start and make a fool of myself, I think it's best to tell you that I probably don't know as much as any of you about vista, but I'm kinda in a bind at the moment.

I think I might have a virus or something on my computer, but I'm not sure. I've noticed that when I'm browsing on Firefox, it has randomly started to lag out on me, pausing before any action(Causing the top bar to briefly tell me that it is not responding) and this also seems to be the case in Open Office. When I turn off the wireless internet on it, it seems to stop and it's been going on for a little while now.

I'm also running an outdated version of Kaspersky, with the firewall still active, but I don't go to any websites that are unsafe. I can give any other details needed, and I just really need some quick help since I don't want my laptop spazzing out during finals.

Any advice or help would be appreciated.

chainloader, I'm not one to understand exactly whats going on there.... you have linux on there at all? The only place I saw chainloader was grub :\.

Anyway, if you can boot to xp, you can use to play with the vista boot loader -- even from xp. Vista boot loader just gives you a nice gui to edit the boot loader settings.

In the last 6-7 months my pc has been running very slowly - the change was almost overnight. Start up is still swift but once I open up a program or open a browser to start surfing the 'net, everything slows down and the pc even sounds like it's struggling. The pc is only 3-4 years old so I wasn't expecting it to behave like this for at least another year or so (maybe over-optimistic!).

I don't know too much about the spec but the basics I have are:

Vista SP2
32 bit OS
Intel 2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40 GHz
291 GB free of 455 GB

Is my pc just out of date or is there something wrong? I've tried the virus check etc and it comes back clean.

One thing I should mention is that about 18 months ago I had a bad virus thing which meant that I had to wipe everything and start again. However, the pc worked fine afterwards and this slowdown has come quite a while after that so I don't think the two things are related.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Open MSconfig disable everything except your antivirus. If you connect wirelessly then do not disable anything that reads wireless.REoot.You do not need anything other than your AV starting with your machine.
Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig, then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there, after hiding microsoft services? Please post back to us in a vertical list.
unzip Autoruns to your desktop run it.See any entries that read file not found when you see them right click and select delete do this only for the entries that read file not found also uncheck any scheduled task that are set to run on your machine, close the program.
After completing the above task then Please download TFC by Old Timer and save it to your desktop.
Save any unsaved work. TFC will close ALL open programs including your browser!
double click on TFC.exe to run it.If TFC doesnt prompt a reboot then please do so manually

Hit start at the lower left hand corner type cmd in the run box and copy and paste the following info chkdsk /r Hit enter it will ask to schedule a check disk on the next reboot hit y type exit then reboot your machine it will take a good while to finish let it be this is normal.

For the first time in years I'm suddenly getting BSOD's. This is a fresh install of x64 Ultimate with all drivers updated To the best of my knowledge. System was very stable for 2weeks then suddenly over night went nuts. I've done a system recovery going back 48hrs with no avail. I've done virus checks, and everything else I can think of. Even reinstalled the factory updated drivers. The ONLY thing i can see that is unique to the last 48hrs ( I THINK ) is the 3D stereoscopic nvida driver. Which I've removed tonight. I don't remember it being there b4 but as its a new program maybe it was.
I'm including the memory dump files from the 3 that i can find. and my hijackthis log. Please help me get rid of this insane problem. I so don't relish revisiting the XP days.

Out of nowhere (possibly related to Windows Vista updates, but I'm not sure), I cannot open paperport (either 11 or 9, which won't even install on Vista). I get a "paperport not working" message, and Windows closes the program. Sometimes a message about not being able to find "MV Extension" also appears.

PLEASE HELP WITH THIS! Nuance won't answer emails, and nothing I've tried has worked. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, done several system restores, even restored only paperport from backup dated the last time I knew that paperport 11 worked. Nothing.

I saw threads on this in March of 2007 through a google search, but nothing recent, and I could not contact any of the posters on those old forums.

Thanks in advance... Kathy

I just had the same problem with PaperPort using Vista. I reinstalled and it's still there which makes me think it's a result of an automatic Vista update - - - I'm not that technical and am looking for help here. Hopefully, someone can bail us out!

hello all, (go canucks) specs-> gigabyte ga-ma790fxds5, amd phenom 9500 quad, 4 gb ballistix tracer 2x1gb dual channel, seagate 250 gb 7200 sata, 2 ati radeon 3870's in crossfire, thermaltake 650 psu. Everything was great until kid was playing ms flight sim x, crashed. When rebooting, it would stop with errors: bootmgr is corrupt, the system cannot boot, file fltmgr.sys-status 0xc00000098-info windows failed to load because a required file is missing or corrupt. Did some surfing and found some similiar posts on this and other sites, but no real solutions. I narrowed it down to three things, dead cmos battery, bad ram or bad hdd. I started with the easiest, pulled a couple sticks of ram and rebooted. Next, replaced the cr2032 but forgot to write down the bios settings and had to reset them manually, I'm pretty sure(not 100%) that I have it set correctly. Lastly, i downloaded seatools for dos and booted with it and am presently staring at : :bad CRC 45....ce (should be 9e......b0)
seatools.exe :bad CRC 90....3e (should be 0f.....74)
unifon.dat :bad CRC (should be 26....ff)

I'm pretty sure the cmos battery wasn't the prob, im still uncertain whether its ram or hdd. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Thanks in advance for any help that can be offered!

My Homebuilt dual core PC has started crashing at apparently random intervals.
The behaviour is this; sudden black screen, PC hard drives and fans still running, a 3-4 second interval, PC powers down, auto restart of PC, boots to 'SAFE mode' options boot screen, then reboots entirely normally when 'start my computer normally' is selected.

I have scoured the error log and have found several unusual entries. I am at a major loss as to their relevance i would really appreciate any help regarding this problem.

Incidentally this beviour occured 3 or so months ago and eventually resulted in a BSOD with STOP error which was resolved by new hard drive and clean install of VISTA! Im not keen for that to be repeated!

Thanks once again!

OK. I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon and ask for help with my connection issues.

I've got an HP laptop with Vista Business on it. I've been connecting to the internet through a wireless network (Netgear router) for about a month with no issues. But suddenly, out of the blue, no more connection:
- "Local only" access to an unidentified public network (Huh?)
- "Limited connectivity" to an unidentified public network...

No external interference. I have 2 computer next to each other: one connecting, other not...

What I've done so far (to a point where I'm ready to throw my computer out the window... ):

- Release and renew ipconfig : "Unable to connect your DHCP server"
- Specifying a static IP address (for Internet Protocol v.6 and v.4)
- Uninstalled and reinstalled my WLAN adapter (Broadcom 802.11a/b/g WLAN)
- Pinging : transmit failed, error code 1231.
- Uninstalling my Norton anti-virus software
- Restart my computer MULTIPLE times.
- Disabled my firewall

This is what I get when I run "ipconfig /all" in my DOS command prompt:

I have an HP vista basic 32 bit laptop. Very suddenly, as of last night when I tried to put it into standby, I have been having problems with explorer hanging. The laptop takes longer to boot and, after I enter my password, it appears to load as normal, but explorer hangs completely. I am able to run in safe mode with networking, although it is temperamental, hanging a few times and giving me the BSOD. (I am actually used to getting the BSOD every now and again, I normally just ignore it).

None of my usage habits have changed over the past few weeks, no new installations/updates, it all started very suddenly.

I have found no malware/virus in scans. I followed the instructions in the read me regarding shells, but no luck. None of the troubleshooting in the suggested threads has worked for me either. I ran Ccleaner, easycleaner and cureit.

I've noticed that my laptop sounds like it is stuttering when it it loading.

Unfortunately my laptop is several years old and I have lost my windows recovery cds. For some reason (which I have ignored for a long time) I am unable to use system restore at all so have not been able to try that either. Msconfig also appears to have been removed from my computer (if that is even possible).

Apologies if I have missed any information, any help would be greatly appreciated. (Also realise my computer sounds a state).

Answer:Sudden Vista Explorer Hanging

Is your Vista OS fully upto date with all Service Packs and updates?

If it does then likelihood is a starting application on your PC is causing this issue, so could you run the below and attach the log, then we can see if you have applications that may conflict with each other, the prime example of conflicting applications is too many resident running security applications.

Run Ccleaner and click Tools > Startup and then click the Save to text file button at the bottom, Then attach your log to your next post as per these instructions HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post Click to expand...

Also knowing what the BSOD is with the full message and error code will help us trace the cause down, you can use the info HERE to help you

If your laptop is making a noise then possible is faulting cooling fan or HDD, so make sure that all the air vents are free from dust and fluff, and run chkdsk (run from an elevated CMD prompt... type CMD in Start Search and then right click and Run as Administrator CMD when it lists) and type at the CMD prompt chkdsk /r and hit enter.

Answer:Sudden flood of problems with vista

I also had several weird issues with Vista today. System had been running great all morning. I left the system running for a couple hours and this afternoon it was running like crap, sputtering and not responding on several programs.

Firefox would not open up but was in the process list

IE7 32-bit would sit at connecting and not load up anything and would not close without killing the process.

IE7 64-bit worked but was slow and sometimes unresponsive.

Control Panel was slow and sometimes unresponsive.

Other programs that normally open up instantly were taking up to 10 seconds and may become unresponsive.

Shutting down the system and powering cycling all equipment did nothing. My other system on XP PRO SP4 was fine, no problems at all.

The only thing that I noticed that had changed, I still had auto update on and it had downloaded and installed KB929777. I uninstalled it and restarted. Nothing changed.

I reset IE7 back to defaults and flushed everything, no change.

Uninstalled firefox, downloaded a fresh copy and reinstalled. No change.

I ended up booting up the DVD and restoring the system to last nights restore point and everything is running great again. I also had to once again uninstall and reinstall firefox, it still wouldn't open, but reinstalling it fixed it this time. Weird...

Greetings all,
I hope this hasn't been covered somewhere already but my search came up dry.
I have been running Vista with out any major problems for a couple of months now. With out knowingly making any changes to the hardware or software of my system I now get the "Reboot and Select Proper Boot Device" Message. This is what I've covered so far myself:

-Hard drive is set to master (tried CS as well)
-Actually removed all other HDs just in case
-IDE cable is fine and connected
-HD is the only device powered off strand from power supply
-Boot device priority is correctly set with HD first (except when I want to boot off the DVD)
-Reset the BIOS settings to default
-Placed HD in secondary computer in slave mode (Files intact, ran check disk with no errors)
-Can boot off the Vista disc, enter repair mode but OS is NOT listed.
(If I select load drivers at that menu it DISPLAYS MY HARD DRIVE AND ALL MY FILES how frustrating is that!)

I've run out of ideas from googling my problem. Any suggestions appreciated.
(I seem to remember repairing boot sectors with XP, can I do this from Vista repair somehow if I enter the command prompt?)

Answer:Vista Sudden Boot Failure

Sounds like the boot files on the hard drive aren't doing their job. Have you tried running Startup Repair from the Vista DVD?

We have a strange virus/malware on my better half's Vista PC. It has deleted all her emails and email folders. Windows Mail now looks like a brand new App!! I cannot find the emails in the regular data place either. The BT helpline chappie said it must be a virus and that I need to get a technical person in to backup her files and so on and then re-format and re-install windows Vista.I have backed up everything onto an external HD using the Vista backup system. How can I be sure that I haven't backed up the virus as well? I havescanned with a couple of AV programs and they say it is now clear.I do not think I need an outside techie fellow to do this, but I would appreciate any warnings and suggestions..

Answer:Sudden loss of all emails in Vista

Assuming you have done a full search for .eml files and have done full scans with programs like Malwarebytes , Superantispyware , PREVX free etc. , I would suggest trying a file recovery program such as Recuva or suchlike as your missing files may just be hidden ( flagged for overwriting } rather completely gone . I'm going to try to patch my vista install BEFORE I connect the computer to the internet. I found a MS webpage with lots of Vista updates that can be downloaded as executables.

How do I decide which ones to get? Here is one that looks like I should get:

Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 and Windows Vista Service Pack 2 - Five Language Standalone for x64-based systems (KB948465)

Answer:Which downloads should I get for Vista?

What you should do is get AVG or avast installed before you connect to the internet. then connect and get that updated right away and the Windows updates. That way you are secure, and you can get patched before something bad happens.

I have a Dell Inspiron15 Laptop with Vista and IE8.
Since quite a while it crashed completely about once per day while I was working in MS Word. All I could do was shut it down by pushing the power button 4 seconds and then start up again. The following, however, does not apply to software installed on my laptop; that works fine.
Now, since about three days, I am having problems in IE. When starting the Internet Explorer, it takes about 35 seconds to build up my Yahoo homepage. When I type an address in the address bar, first it takes about 5 seconds for each letter I deleted, then another 5 seconds for each letter of the new address to show, while a "not responding" comes up in between, so "not responding" shows, goes away and a letter shows, then again "not responding", goes away and a letter shows, etc., etc., until the address is complete. Then it takes at least another 5 seconds, usually longer, for the site to come up. The day before yesterday it was so bad that I could hardly get any site up. I did a clean up, a defrag, and a total Norton virus scan over night. My homepage is coming up a little faster now (about 25 seconds), but the problem of going to other sites still persists.
Does anybody know what is going on here? Except for taking it all down and re-install (and I'm not even sure that that would help), I am at the end of my poor wits. Thanks a lot in advance.

My computer was on one morning and i left for about an hour. When i came back it was off. I turned it back on and nothing came on the screen. The monitor works but nothing comes up. Also the mouse and keyboard dont have any power coming to them. They are both USB connected and i tried both in the front and in the back ports and neither work. Please advise any particular causes! Thanks!

Answer:Vista computer all of a sudden wont boot up

The likely cause here would be power supply or motherboard failure. Unfortunately neither are very easy to diagnose without being at the PC, but since you mention that the power was off when you came back, I'd start with that. It could actually be both, but the power supply is easier and cheaper to replace to start with.

I have a Compaq Presario PC SR5130NX with original parts except upgraded RAM to 1.5 Gigs. I have had no problems for a year and three months roughly and all of the sudden it started locking up with almost any program I would try and run (Word 07, IE, Excel 07, games, etc.). At first I thought it was a virus so I ran McAfee several times after locking down my firewall and came up with nothing. I heard that Norton could cause a problem after the trial periods came do so I completely wiped the drive clean of all Symantec and Norton traces. I noticed a significant improval for about a week and then it went back to freezing with every program and started freezing when coming out of sleep mode. I tried doing the restore point to a month before, no luck, then I tried to reformat the computer (has separate partition on HD for Windows Recover) and it kept failing at 45% then on the fourth attempt it finished after about 12 hours. I ran the system diagnostics thinking it could be the HD or the RAM but the check came back ok(as well as the processor). I just recovered the computer again and I have nothing but a half installed WOW client, having all the problems from the first time before I tried to recover. Any suggestions out there?
~ BTW I have two other PCs, one with Vista Home Basic, and Laptop with XP if I need to test on either one of those.

Answer:Sudden Vista Premium problem after 1+year

If you've reinstalled from the recovery disks, then all should be well. This leaves a problem with the recovery disks, or a hardware issue.
I'd suggest getting another set of recovery disks from Compaq and trying them. If you still have problems, then it's most likely a hardware issue.

Apologies if this looks like an old issue, but I have tried everything on the forums and it's getting me nowhere.

My desktop is connected to a BT Broadband 3 (BT Infinity, = fibre/copper) router via a wireless connection. It's pretty stable although I do get the odd random "local only" error, which to date a pop-up BT "wizard" has fixed (I have no idea what the problem was, or what it did).

Between last night, when it was working fine, and this morning, something has happened to make the "local only" access permanent, which means try as a might I cannot get internet access. I have a laptop (which I'm writing this on) and it connects wirelessly to the router fine.

The only recent change is that I installed a memory upgrade 3-4 days ago which meant I had to reset the BIOS - but the wireless connection carried on working for 3-4 days until last night. I did get an automatic CHKDSK for the first time yesterday (I was being impatient and hard powered down whilst Windows was booting).

I have tried all the usual steps that can be found on the forums for this annoying problem, including removing and re-installing the wireless adaptor. I may try subscribing to NoIP for a dynamic DNS, but that doesn't seem to be the root cause.

I am posting IPCONFIG /ALL below. Any suggestions would be most gratefully received.

Hi everyone, just having a rather confusing problem with Vista, on my laptop. For a while it's been getting a little slower, nothing major but the fan is on constantly and loudly. Then recently there's been a serious downturn, like framerate issues in (relatively old) games, firefox freezing, various media programs freezing, CPU usage going up and staying at 100% for no apparent reason. It's come to a head now when I've set the desktop effects to the minimum, and used msconfig and task manager to end virtually every nonessential process that's running, and I got framerate issues when playing the ORIGINAL Sims game!

I'm running Vista 32-bit Home Premium SP1, Advent 5401
CPU: Core 2 Duo T5550 1.83GHz
NVidia GeForce 8400M GS

Any help would be appreciated - my gf has the older model of this laptop, she's kept it running 24/7 for 6 months with random processes running and she has none of these issues!

Point blank: If I Cancel a download...does IE automatically delete what remains? Are there fragments left over from downloading? Or, is all of the data that WAS downloaded deleted w/ the cancellation...

I canceled a few downloads and now I'm paranoid, as I JUST installed a nice, brand new copy of Vista Home Basic on my laptop. (Sure beats that pre-installed Acer crap. :-P)

I have a windows vista home premium 32 bit computer that I am helping a friend with. Recently it has stopped allowing any downloads to install. I have tried 3 different browsers (Firefox, IE 7.0, and Chrome) non will allow the downloads to install. Chrome says that a virus was detected. IE downloads it and then it disappears. Mozilla will show them in its downloads but run is dark gray and not active. I have tried to install pdf files and I also tried Adobe Reader and other programs. I was able to get a pdf to open in Mozilla firefox after I ran it as administrator but I tried to run the other browsers as administrator and that didn't work. I have run malwarebytes, spybot search and destroy, and Superantispyware. I have checked the microsoft installer service and enabled it, but nothing will install from the web. I even tried to install after turning off the antivirus (avg) and the windows firewall. I am able to install programs from my thumb drive.

Do you have any suggestions. I am out of ideas. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:vista won't allow downloads to install

Chrome will not detect viruses. Most probably it is AVG which detected the virus.

PDF files can harbor vriuses. If opened by Acrobat Reader then it can infect your PC.I would trust AVG and not open that file. Or you can upload the PDF file to and they will scan it with 40 antivirus products and then you decide whether or not to keep it.

Just a bit about terminilogy here: PDF files do not need to be installed, they just open when you double click on the file. EXE and MSI files can be installers which install programs. But you didn't mention that what you are downloading is a EXE or MSI.

I would also check with the Adobe site and see if you have the latest Acorbat Reader installed. The latest one offers more protection against PDF viruses.

1. I click on link in website to download.
2. download starts and finishes and then disappears out of the download box.

I use Vista Home 32 bit. An attempted auto download on 23 August was unsuccessful and the message came on telling me not to turn the pc off as it was reverting the previous action. The unsuccessful update was:
Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update (KB951847) x86

Installation date: ‎23/‎08/‎2009 13:13

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 80070BC9

This happens each time I turn the pc on and is very frustrating and timewasting. This still happens even although one recent download of the same item is shown as successful. Another update unsuccessfully installed today is:

Update for Windows Vista (KB955430)

Installation date: ‎18/‎09/‎2009 10:34

Installation status: Failed

Error details: Code 800F0825

Update type: Important

Install this update to enable future updates to install successfully on all editions of Windows Vista. This update may be required before selected future updates can be installed. After you install this item, it cannot be removed. This update is provided to you and licensed under the Windows Vista License Terms.
I don't know whether this is a common downloading problem or perhaps relating just to my pc. I'm non-technical and any help will be very welcome.

I was fixing a friend's XP emachine that was super slow and laden with viruses. I used my Vista machine to download AdAware and AVG for starters then IE7 to save time. On the IE7 download site, they want to verify that you have genuine MS software. OK, we both have genuine MS software so I say OK -- BUT, after verification, it will only INSTALL IE7, there is no way to just download the file to move it to another computer anymore...... what a pain. I guess the solution is spelled Firefox. Or did I miss some obscure, hidden away button somewhere?

I get a strange issue with downloading, and I think it MAY be OS related - and not so much my ISP.

I have a 3mb cable internet connection. When I do a speed test I get an acceptable 2998kb/s speed.

But whenever I download an actual file I max out at 360kb/s. Sometimes I will start out there and then it just gradually drops down to 70ish kb/s. I have a Nvidia nForce Networking Controller as my network adapter.

I know this isn't related to where/what I am downloading - because I will get on ventrilo and speak with others downloading the same file at the same time, with locations and ISP's similar to mine, and they will be getting a solid 400-600kb/s when I am at 77kb/s.

My ISP says everything looks good on their end. So I think this may be possibly something with my adapter and my OS. I have everything updated, drivers etc. I haven't tweaked any of my network settings in Vista yet. I have power cycled my modem etc, tried no firewalls, disabling antivirus, have done lots of virus scans etc. I don't run from a router - I am straight hardlined to modem.

What would cause a speed test to be good and yet an actual download to be so sub-par?

I've been having this problem for awhile now. Downloads start okay and then just stall a little way in. Sometimes they slow down to a crawl and then stop, and sometimes they just stop cold. I've done a number of virus/malware checks and the computer is clean. I can get around it by using a download manager like Flashget, but sometimes the thing you are downloading is an auto-download withing a game or an application and you can't used Flashget. I am running Windows Vista. I am connected to a router, but even when disconnecting the router the problem still persists. Turning off my firewall also has no effect. Streaming videos like YouTube works fine. Just downloads are the problem. Kind of maddening, at some point I guess I'll just have to reinstall Windows, but maybe someone here has suggestions.

Try contacting the makers of the other maps, point out the suggested path is working for you.

Starting just a couple days ago, I found that I could no longer download any vista updates, getting the ohh-so-annoying "Code 80244019." Well, as much of a problem as it is, my bigger problem is that I can no longer download any files at all.

Every time I download a file, it turns up as .part, which cannot be read as a file, or just does not show up at all. I've tried both IE and Firefox to check for a solution but both seem to do the exact same thing. Any help would be wonderful, I'm about at the end of my rope on this one.

I just purchased Midnight Club 2 for my pc. It's a farely old game, so I suspect it wont start because of compatability reasons. It downloaded just fine, but it wont start!! its really annoying. I tried everything, Including going to properties and running its compatability on every Windows mode on the list. It still wont start, even when running as administrator. I constantly get an error that says "The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click OK to terminate the application". I called dell and they suggested that I downgrade to XP, since Vista isnt really good with games, But they want to charge me over $200 to downgrade -_- is there any other way I can fix this problem. Maybe running vista more like xp somehow, idk. Can someone please help me?

I have a Dell Dimension E520 computer with Windows Vista Home installed.

My brother was using it last night and apparently shut it down as normal.

When I came to switch it on today, I got the following error message:

File: \Windows\system32\config\system

Status: 0xc000014c

Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing, or corrupt.

I'm not entirely sure how this happened because I didn't see what was going on. Is it possible that a Windows Update that installed (oblivious to my brother's knowledge) broke the OS ? I've heard of it happening before.

I can't even get into Safe Boot either. I was able to get a Norton Recovery Disk to load up, but apparently I have no System Restore Points on my computer.

I can see all my hard drive contents using the Explorer functionality in the Norton Recovery Disk, but I'm not sure how much that helps my cause.

Could anyone possibly help?

Hey everyone,

So I look for Media Center to play my NBC Nightly News, and all of a sudden, it's not there anymore. My Vista x64 installation works rock solid, and I couldn't be happier, but where, oh where, is my Media Center??

I don't remember uninstalling it, but I'm not aware of a way to even do that!???

Is there any way to restore it, or maybe to download it from somewhere and re-install just that. I don't want to re-install Vista from my DVD, I really don't. It's humming a lot just great.

Can someone please help me with this?? Maybe I acidentally "hid it". LOL...I know my thoughts sounds funny, or crazy even. I just can't explain it to myself how a core component of Vista Ultimate can disappear like that.

Thanks for any replies in advance!!

Answer:Media Center missing all of a sudden on Vista Ultimate!???

Hi Crunch,

first thing to check is C:\Windows\ehome which is where vista keeps the files

try running ehshell.exe with and without admin privileges

if the files are there you may and if still no joy

you may want to try a SFC /scannnow and see if if it finds any problems

hope this helps

I am having problems with the image on my screens. It seems more likely the video card as the image is alright upon boot but when I log in they get very dark and it is tough to see what is on them.

I'm running a GeForce 8600 on an Abit I35-Pro Mobo with a intel E6750 with 8GB RAM.

When this started happening I was watching Hulu (daily show) and when I maximized the video (screen) on the second monitor it went black and it said that monitor bios said that the cable may be unplugged.

I swapped the two cables on my tower to see if it was the monitor or the tower. The video switched to the other screen, so it seems to be the video card.

I tried to go into Vista graphics adapter settings and found that it would not recognize the second monitor unless I clicked on the advanced button which took me to the Nvidia advanced setup. I reconfigured the monitors so one screen would be an extension of the other and changed the resolution to the max.

When I would apply these changes and exit the Nvidia setup the monitors would revert back to only one working. I then tried the same thing 3 more times and then it started to come up dim when I would go to max res and 32bit (which is what it has been for 18 months). I switched the colors to 16 bit and the monitors went back to the normal brightness but when I closed the Nvidia screen it would go back to a single monitor.

I went thought the entire above procedure and got the screens to stay their normal brightness but had to leave the ... Read more

Hey I have been trying to find the solution to my problem and have been turning up short from numerous tech support sites including my companies manufacturer and MSFT themselves. Here is my problem

When I am at home I have my desktop hooked up to my router and have 4 laptops on my wireless network all XP machines. I have no problems with any of them downloading or transfering files over my network. I have a belkin router and a motorola surfboard modem.

With my vista machine if I try to transfer files over from a shared folder (drag and drop) I can only do it one at a time. If I take a big amount of files it disconnects me from my network. This also happens anytime I try to stream any sort of media off of the internet, Download huge files usually anything over 50 megs really. After this happens I just disconnect from my wireless network and reconnect and I am back online. Has anyone had this problem?

As for my hardware I am currently running Alienware M9700 Laptop brand new only had it a week and had vista installed when I got it. I am also using Vista Ultimate edition.

When I called MSFT they told me they hadnt heard this before and that they needed a few days to run the scenario and try it out for themselves to work on a solution for fixing my problem. (not quite sure if that meant they didnt have an answer and just wanted me off the phone) Anyways Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

I have recently started using Vista (SP1) and have found that I can't open pdf files sent as Windows Mail attachments or when trying to download them from websites. With Windows Mail I get "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel" and with Firefox I get "Acrobat plug-in - Could not launch Acrobat." I have done all of the usual things (Control Panel, Default Programs, Set Associations) and the pre-installed Adobe Acrobat Reader (version 8.1.2) is associated with pdf files. But they don't open when in the form of attachments - I first have to save them to disc and they open from there. Can you help resolve this problem? (I am OK with .doc and .ppt files)

Answer:Can't open pdf attachments or downloads (Vista OS)

Adding to my post above ... Have just found that I CAN download / open a pdf file using IE7, and from that I see that the file type is "pdf_auto_file". But my mail attachment problem remains, as does the Firefox download problem.

Yes I see it often. As for an example, I've downloaded an audio song today. When the download was finished, I checked the properties of the downloaded file and there was a " Unblock" option.

Hello Major Geekers !!

I am hoping one of you may be able to help me for the sake of my own sanity , as this problem is driving me literally NUTS !! :banghead

Background Info -

I dont usually use "Vista" and on my own "trusty old Pc" ( TOP) i use xp with no problems ,The TOP is away having an upgrade at the moment , so i am using a friends spare laptop. She did mention she had some "software problems" on it and i said i would take a look and install and run new antivirus and clean -up progs for her.

Ive used Vista before , but i find it very frustrating as every single goddamn action i try to perform triggers a "warning" pop up - " confirm you want to do this " ect - ( Arghh!! How patronising and annoying!! ) It slows the whole system down and its just inconvient and annoying when you are quickly trying to get tasks done! Basically , im fine with using Vista but i prefer not to as it annoys the hell out of me.

I am logged in on my friends "administrator" account , and ive tried changing settings so i DONT get the dammed "warning/are you sure you want to do this action/confirm action" messages every two minutes , to no avail ! If anyone knows a workaround to switch off those accursed pop-ups , then your please share the wisdom for the sake of my sanity! :tas

Im nowhere near to a IT expert , but im competent enough, and if I have a helpfull quide or instructions courtesy of MajorGee... Read more

Answer:windows vista blocking all EXE downloads from the net

It might be some sort of virus. It seems unlikely that Vista itself would block downloading exes.

But that aside, try rebooting and hitting the F8 key repeatedly to get the Advanced Startup/Safe mode menu and see if you can boot into Safe Mode.

Try to uninstall AVG from there. Then try to download the AVG uninstaller in Safe Mode and see if it is flagged as a threat. If it downloads run it to completely get rid of AVG.

See if normal mode still blocks exes.
