Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

Question: Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

Basically, I have some people that would jump at the chance to hop onto an Administrator's account due to the restrictions they have. That being said, even if I leave my notebook alone for 5 minutes, I want the darn thing locked.

Just due to the fact I personally like a couple of the new Vista screensavers, is there a way to both lock and immediately start the screensaver?

Preferred Solution: Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Lock Vista & Start Screensaver At Same Time?

Not sure why the screensaver would play into it, but whatever.

Set the screensaver to require a password on resume (even if the screensaver doesn't kick in automagically this is the proper setting), and press Windows+L anytime to lock the workstation immediately.

Hope this helps...

As the title says, I couldn't find it anywhere, but I was looking to have it so that after a set period of time Windows will automatically lock out the user (me). I'm not talking about having a screensaver come up, but I've seen it before, where it basically looks like the logon screen of XP, where you have to click on your name to go back into Windows, and type in your password again.

Can someone direct me to where I set this option? I thought it'd be in the standard haunts, but I don't see it anywhere.

Thanks!

Answer:Having windows lock-out after time (requiring password) but not screensaver

I've not seen this done outside the screensaver options, but this link has another option.

Reading more, I think what you really want is the screensaver option, but use the logon.scr with password enabled.

I am trying to make a shortcut to lock my screen and invoke the screensaver with one batch file.

I came up with this:

@echo off
rem ScreenSaver
cd %windir%\
start WLXPGSS.SCR
rem LOCK
cd %windir%\system32
start rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation
exit

With this batch file, the screen locks (need to put in my password) but the screen saver doesn't start.
Upon entering my password, I see the settings for that particular screensaver were called for not the actual screensaver.

However, when I run C:\Windows\WLXPGSS.SCR the screensaver plays but doesn't "Show welcome screen" and password prompt as selected in the screen saver properties.

I want to click one batch file to lock the screen and play that screensaver only.

That screensaver, by the way, seems it's only part of "Windows Live Setup" which needs to be downloaded from here ...possibly not on all Windows 7 computers.
File Name: wlsetup-web.exe

Here is what is included with Windows Live Setup...you can choose only what you want at install time.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks

Answer:Trying to make .BAT to start screensaver and lock screen Win 7 pro 64

I'm guessing it is running the screensaver then locking the PC losing the screensaver.

If you switch the order does the screensaver part still run?

Vista OS on Toshiba laptop, and other laptops.

Juat after Christmas, five of our laptops running Vista started locking up. We run TrendMicro Client Security Agent software; when we disable the real-time scan the machines run fine but when we enable the real-time scan they lock up immediately.

TrendMicro suggested that the version of the scan software we are running was old; I downloaded the latest version and installed it on one machine and it locked up immediately. I have disabled the automatic scanning for the time being but need tor resolve this before any users contract a virus.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Thank you.

Hi folks!

I've tried to apply the screensaver option on my laptop, (Satellite P200), loaded with Vista Home Premium, but it does not work; the laptop just continues running after the set applied time has lapsed. Is this a known Vista problem? Any suggestions gratefully received, thanks!

Answer:Satellite P200: Screensaver doesn't start on Vista Home Premium

Hi

May I ask you if you use the Microsoft wireless mouse?
I found out that this could affect the screensaver functionality on Vista OS.

Strange!

So maybe you should check this MS article:

A feedback would be appreciated.

I am not quite sure where to start...as it is not a hardware issue, so me mentioning the hardware would more than likely not make the difference.

A few weeks ago, after a security update came down from Windows update, my home setup mysteriously started password locking when the remaining idle for a period of time. I do not have any other user accounts on my computer, just the Administrator account that I normally use. This same thing happens on my networked office computers, even if you aren't an administrator.

I have made sure that my screensaver is off, and I have also even messed around the power options, making sure that it was not the "one wake-up ask for password option."

I am not quite sure what caused this function to turn on, perhaps it was the security update, perhaps it was not.

Does anybody now how to turn off this function?

Answer:Vista will password lock when computer is idle for a period of time

Hello,

Right click on your Desktop and click on Personalise. Click Screensaver in the new window. In the Screensaver window, uncheck "On resume display logon screen", click OK and the problem should be fixed!

I've read somewhere here before that Windows 7 introduced a feature wherein you can lock your PC without the need of a screensaver. My question is how can I access this, or change this setting? Local Security Policy? GPedit?

Answer:How to lock PC without the need of a screensaver?

Hello Arkhi,

It's the same as it was in Vista. You can press Windows Key + L, or open the Start Menu and open the arrow menu next to the power button and select Lock.

The problem is that when my PC loads the screen saver (doesn't matter which one) and I wake it up, I has a pop-up screen that says that my computer is locked, and only the user of administrator can log in. What I want it to do is not load the pop-up screen, but load up the windows "Welcome Screen".

Right now, I have "On resume, password protect" checked in Display Properties, Screensaver Tab.

Pic. 1

In User Accounts in "Change the way users log on or off", I have "Use the Welcome screen" checked and "Use Fast User Switching" checked.

Pic. 2

I only have one account that is active, guest account is off. If anyone can help me with this i'd be very appreciative.

I can't figure out what's wrong with the screensaver settings. I've got it set to come on after 10 minutes, and I checked the box to display the lock screen or whatever it is where you enter your password to log into Windows...but it doesn't work right.
During the day, if I walk away from the computer, when I come back, the screensaver will be running and when I move the mouse to wake it up, it shows the lock screen like it's supposed to do... But at night after I've left work, I have no idea what it's doing... When I come in in the morning, I move the mouse and voila, already on my desktop...no screensaver, no lockscreen...just my desktop staring me in the face.
This is really irritating me because I have sensitive materials in my files, so I need to make sure this thing locks up when it's supposed to... We have a night shift working here, so I can't have this thing wide open for them to get into.

I'm not sure what the deal is--if it's a bug or if I did something wrong. The only difference between day and night is during the day I leave my monitor on, but when I go home at night I click the power button off. I'm "assuming" that even with the monitor powered down, the pc will still wait 10 minutes and then launch the screensaver/lockscreen--but I'm not sure if that's the case. Like I say, I have no problems during the day when the monitor's on.

Anyone have any suggestions or comments? They just upgraded me to 7 and I'm not happy with it at all--all kinds ... Read more

Answer:Buggy screensaver - Doesn't lock

Hello b.b.7, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm not sure why it works during the day and not from over night when resuming from the screen saver.

Here are a couple of things to double check:If you like, have CTRL+ALT+DELETE secure logon screen enabled for added security.
Screen saver password protection enabled.
Possible resumming from sleep/hibernate in the morning instead of from screen saver. Enable require password on wakeup.

need script to set screensaver / lock out to 10 minutes . Is such a think possible ? thanks

Answer:need script to set screensaver / lock out to 10 minutes

Funny, I am using an app that prevents the screen saver/sleep to start on my work PC.
What you propose to do is possible but not easy.
You could have a script that would create a scheduled task to run
Run "%windir%\System32\rundll32.exe user32.dll,LockWorkStation

Scripts to create scheduled tasks should be floating around the web. But then where do you want the script to run? If you want it to run in the context of another user you might need to have this run as part of a logon script.
Could you provide more details of what exactly you are trying to do?

Hello,

I am unable to lock my PC via power options. Although I have set it as to lock PC, it is impossible to do it as per Windows XP.

The only way to lock it is through the screensaver, but this is not an option for me as I work 10 hours at an office and I prefer the blank screensaver to start in one minute and to turn off the display after 10 minutes.

That's when I want the PC to be locked, i.e. after 10 minutes and not after on minute after screensaver starts.

Is there any option to lock my PC through power options without choose to lock on screensaver?

Answer:Lock PC by Power Options not screensaver

If I understand you correctly, you want to run the screensaver for 10 minutes (ie. step away from your desk for a few and come back without having to unlock your machine) and have it lock if you are away for more than 10 minutes. I think the best you will be able to do go to control panel> power options>plugged in>turn off monitor> 10 minutes. Now go to your system32 folder and create a shortcut to the screensaver you'd like to use and place it on your desktop or drag it to your taskbar. Next go to personalization> screensaver and set screen saver to activate and lock at 9 minutes. Now when you wish to leave your workstation simply click the shortcut and your screensaver will activate, your computer will lock at 9 minutes and the monitor will turn off in 10 minutes. I think this is the best you can do without buying some type of freeware.

I have been reading this board for I while - never posted! Well here is my first.

I work for a pharmaceutical company and was given the mandate to strengthen the security of the systems on the production floor. These computers display the status of various processes. We want this information to remain visible to everyone but now want to control who can actually use the system. When someone does login/unlock the system we need to audit that event.

So far the only way I have found is using a third party app called Transparent Screen Lock ( http://www.e-motional.com/tscreenlock.htm ). This is pretty much a transparent screensaver that you can configure to let users unlock using their own domain account credentials.

I have done some testing with this product ? it seems to work as advertised and has pretty much all the options you would expect. I like the fact that users can use their own domain passwords but worry about that at the same time. My first question is: When evaluating such a product, what are the things I should be looking for? What should I be testing for?

Anyone with any experience in the pharmaceutical industry knows that security is a very big concern so I am pretty apprehensive about implementing such a product. For this reason I would like to open a discussion about my problem (i.e. securing a PC leaving the screen visible) as well as this possible solution. I will open the discussion with a number of questions.

What are my options? ... Read more

Answer:Transparent or Clear Screen Lock or Screensaver

You should check for obvious ways of getting around the lock..

Can you specify which users exactly can unlock the computer? (Allowing all domain users to do so is bad).
Does it blcok _all_ key combinations? Ctrl+Alt+Del? Ctrl+Shift+Esc? What if I plug in another USB keyboard or a mouse? What if I reboot the computer?

Also, make sure the system cannot be accessed over the network. If the machine belongs to a domain, then by default it means anyone with Domain Admin privileges can do anything to that computer remotely.

IT Manager rolled out autolock after 1 hour if inactivity. However, the way he did it nuked the users screen saver option. This coupled with them being forced to have a 1 hour inactivity limit (Some users want less time) is causing some waves.

Just curious if there is another way to get GP to auto lock workstations while retaining the screen saver.

you could schedule a task to run on idle, set the conditions to 1 hour and have it run:

Hi Giovanni,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

I think this is because of graphic driver or with power manager, can you provide the current graphic driver version installed in your system, to verify if the installed driver is from Lenovo?

You can check it from ?device manager? to proceed with this go to start and type ?device manager?. Expand Display adapter and right click on Intel adapter go to properties & click on drivers tab.

Hope to hear back soon!

Have just bought my first computer since an Atari!!! It has vista pre-loaded. It seems to take a long time to boot up. It has a 1.9GHZ AMD Turion. Is it normal to take so long i.e about 2 mins sometimes, and is there anything i can do to speed it up?

Answer:Vista start up time

A laptop? You will probably have a number of manufacturer's utilities running, updates, wireless, news etc - all add to the boot time. Right click each icon in the system tray to see if they are really needed. You can disable or remove entries with something like CCleaner (click here - click Tools/Startup).

I thought Vista failing to start was a feature, something to do with enhanced security; if the OS won't start, you can't get malware!Still on my quest to make it work. So I turned it off and back on again a few times, and finally it booted into vista. It didnt do it again for a few days, and now here I am everytime I go to turn on my computer I have to either tap it a couple of times, Unplug the power supply from it, or open the dvd drive bay and try it again. I dont know if any of what I am doing is helping it start up or not, but I do it anyway just in hopes to get it up and going. I have do a clean install on it in hopes that it was just the Master boot record, but with no changes. I have checked the driver software and all of it is up to date. PLEASE HELP ME, summer school is about to start and I need a computer for the class....

Thanks.

Answer:Vista Installed. But At Start Up 75% Of The Time It Says No Operating System Found!

That is indicative of an imminent hard drive failure, or a loose cable. Please don't slap your computer anymore though. Electronics, especially heated electronics, are not made to withstand being slapped around, and you are likely to break something else.

Yesterday I noticed that my screensaver was not activiting after the set
time limit (30 minutes in this case). I tried the Preview button in the

after 30 minutes. I tried 5 minutes for the setting and that works fine.
Any ideas as to why it won't respond when I use 30 minutes (or even 29

For some reason every few days my screensaver moves from 10 minutes to 1 minute. At 1 minute it fails to turn on. I don't know what's going on....could it be a virus?

Answer:Screensaver time resets to 1

You could reset the registry setting to see if it fixes the problem.

Copy the following setting and save them in Notepad. Then save it in a file with a .reg file extension. e.g., ScreenSaverReset.reg
Then run it or manually set them using Regedit.
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaverIsSecure"="0"
"ScreenSaveTimeOut"="600"
"ScreenSaveActive"="1"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Control Panel\Desktop]
"ScreenSaveActive"=dword:00000001
"SCRNSAVE.EXE"=-

Shortly after my Microsoft Plus! aquarium screensaver kicks in the CPU fan starts to run. I opened performance monitor and found the CPU time stays at 100% the entire time the screensaver is running. My machine is a Celeron R at 2.93GHz with 512 of RAM and an Intel 82845 graphics controller. Is there something I can reconfigure to reduce the CPU time? I'm concerned that running at 100% so much of the time will shorten its life. Thank you.

But recently, when I was learn R programming, I ran a script accidentally( Copy Paste) which was meant for a octacore processor  on a Core 2 Duo processor(2.2 Ghz, 800 MHz FSB). In WXP, how do you limit the amount of time available before a screensaver comes on? I know you right click on the desktop, go to properties, screensaver and then there is a time available before screensaver comes on. How do you limit the amount of time available to the PC? I.E. instead 600 minutes, 400 minutes, I want to limit the option to 10 minutes, so my kids dont leave the screen on forever when I amnot home. They learned how to change it, and instead of fighting it all the time, I just want to limit the availability of extra time.
I have them set up with there own user accounts too. Thanks, Steve

Answer:How to limit screensaver time available to operator.

Press Windows Key + R, type gpedit.msc, press OK. The Group Policy Editor is launched. Go to Local Computer Policy > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Display > Hide Screen Saver tab. This setting prevents users from using Control Panel to add, configure, or change the screen saver on the computer. If you select Enable, it removes the Screen Saver tab from Display in Control Panel. Hope this helps. :)

Greetings. This is not important, but a puzzle. I have XP Home. No matter what screensaver I use, the time setting will eventually reset itself to one minute and the screensaver may not start. This happens with Windows screensavers and also with imported ones. Has anyone else had this and can it be fixed?

I have no idea how to fix this particular problem with my computer. Every time I go away from my computer and it goes to the screen saver and is supposed to go back to the login window for users(the welcome screen in xp pro), it freezes up completely. It used to be that you couldnt even move the mouse and it was completely frozen. So i took off the feature that it made users log in (even though I really like this feature and want to use it because I am not the only one to use this computer) and now the mouse responds to movement but is unable to click any thing in the desktop, which makes it useless and the same problem is present. Recently I have turned off the screensaver alltogether and even that doesnt seem to stop it from freezing, but I would like to know if there is any way for me to fix this so that it will not freeze and be able to go back to the welcome screen because I want to utilize that feature. It is a relatively new computer...(2.8ghz processor, 512 ram, 160 gb hd, etc) and does not freeze up while the computer is active and in usage, only when it is left on and unused. Thanks for your time and help. Hopefully what I typed makes some sense, if not I can try to clarify a bit.

Answer:Computer Freeze every time it goes to the screensaver...

maybe a problem with the power save features. Do you have the HDD spin down after so many minutes of inactivity. Try disableing that and see if that helps. If it does help, look into flashing your bios/chipset drivers.

Hi,
I operate a two display system. Windows 7 Home 64bit. In order to have a screensaver which works with the two screens (the standard windows one just doesn't), I have downloaded picasa and just use the screensaver. I use Adobe Lightroom to organise my photos.
Originally, it worked fine but recently it seems to come on for a short while and then stop - leaving the normal application screens on view.
Thinking about it, this has happened since I started using Norton 360. Does anyone know if there is anything that Norton could be doing that would cause the screensaver to cut out before I started using the PC again? Or suggest another remedy. (I don't have it set to bring up the logon screen on restart)
Thanks.

After converting from Windows 7 to 10 the screensaver delay time resets to 1 every time I boot the system.
This prevents the screensaver from activating. I set the time and press apply and then works all day until
I sign off at night and re-boot (power up) in the morning. I did not have this problem with Windows 7.

Hello, Gang!

I have a Gateway DX4720-03 Vista-64bit PC.

Recently, I noticed something strange. The Screensaver always reverts back to 1 minute after booting up. While booting up, I can quickly check the screensaver settings, and the wait time is what I set before rebooting. After the services start on the PC, the time resets to 1 minute.

When I check this in Safe Mode, the wait time stays whatever I set it previously, and does not change.

How would you go about determining the bad startup program or service that is resetting the wait time?

Thanks!

Answer:Screensaver Wait Time resets to 1 minute

Does it happen for all screensavers? Is it just the one sreensaver and is it a windows SS or a third party one? Maybe it's a bad SS.

Hi everybody! Our company has a very weird issue that i need to fix as soon as possible as it poses a security threat. Help is much appriciated.
We are using WIndows 7 on our client computers. All drivers including BIOS, chipset etc are updated on the PC i used for testing.
The screensaver time is set to 10 minutes on all clients. On the stationary computers, this works fine. It also works fine on all the Laptops ( different models,  HP and Lenovo ).. until they are put in a dockingstation.
While in docking, depending on wether a cordless mouse or one with a cord is used - screensaver activates at different times.

Screensaver set to 5 minutes / in docking = Activates after 5 minutes with both cordless mouse , and regular mouse
Screensaver set to 6 minutes / in docking = Activates after 11:10 with cordless mouse, 11:07 with regular mouse
Screensaver set to 7 minutes / in docking = Activates after 12:10 with cordless mouse, 7 minutes with regular one
Screensaver set to 8 minutes / in docking = Activates after 13:10 with cordless mouse, 8 minutes with a regular one
The screensaver value in windows remains the same all the time ( excpent when i changed it for test purposes ). I have reviewed the power plan, setting in registry and made sure there arnt any applications disrupting the screensaver.  It looks to me
like something is happening after 5 mins and 10 sek that prolongs the screensaver trigger. Im trying to get some info through the... Read more

Hello experts, I do hope you can help me once again. I am completely confused by this issue and am unsure how to even proceed.

To start, as the title says the screen saver and the Turn off Monitor option do not seem to be playing along well. They work just fine independently however, i usually let the screen saver kick in at 5 minutes and the monitor turn off after 10 minutes. What is happening although, the screensaver kicks in just fine, and when the monitor timer expires, they turn off as needed but then are suddenly interrupted and cancels both the screen saver and the monitor turn off.

After researching what I could, (google has not been friendly in this case), I have tried the wireless mouse fix and the issue continued, I have connected a wired mouse, same result. After many reboots and trial and errors, I have reached a desperate state here because I hate when my monitors run all day when I am not at home.

Thank you all for reading and reaching out to help. Any other information I can provide, I will do so as needed.

Thanks!
-Bz

Ok, so for some reason my screensaver won't start anymore. It just never kicks up. I've heard that if there are certain things running in the background (HID devices/services) that winxp won't ever go into screensaver mode. It's killing my monitor though.

I have a dell 2405 hooked up via dvi and everything looks set right in my screensaver tab. I also have the power settings set to turn off the monitor after one hour (but of course it never turns off the monitor either)

what's going on?

Thread over at Anand

Thanks!

Hi,

I've asked the screensaver to become active after 10 minutes of inactivity on the computer.

For some reason this does not happen. I've tried to disconnect USB services such as wireless mouse, keyboard and joystick without any luck.

The preview of the screensaver will start perfectly and moving the mouse a bit stops it, however in normal use of the computer the screensaver will not start...

I assume it must be a software that stops the screensaver from starting?

Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Screensaver will not start...

This is also an issue for me. I recently connect wirelss mouse and keyboard. but disconnecting/uninstalling them didn't change things. I also have a ext WD HD.

I re-installed Win7 two days ago for this issue and other reasons. I have no malware per Avast, Malwarebytes, and ESET. I should have paid attention and checked if the screen saver problem existed before hooking up the USB devices and running Windows Update, but........ nooooooooo

Now that I know it isn't me, I'll dig deeper and see if any WU went to the USB controllers. I think there were some, but I could be wrong.

I don't have a clue yet, but will watch this thread and post anything I do find. Maybe someone can provide a solution for the issue on your machine and I can try it on mine.

Keep the faith,

Bill

I've researched this problem to no end and have come up with nothing. I have Windows XP SP3. I've tried different screensavers and different time limits. I've gone through MSCONFIG and tried modifying things to find a culprit process, and i've tried a diagnostic startup, but nothing. I know several people have this problem as a result of wireless mouses and/or keyboards but that doesn't apply to me. So i'm at a lost. It's frustrating to not being able to figure out such a simple feature lol. Thanks for any help, responses.

The only way it starts is if you log out to the welcome screen eventually it will come on. I tried uninstalling the software for the keyboard/mouse combo but that did not make any difference, the settings appear to all ok and the preview runs fine, but still no joy. Thanks.

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to sliptream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

I posted this once before, but I'm trying again. My screensaver in XP stops coming on, for no apparent reason. I know that cordless mice sometimes cause this problem, but I'm not using one. I never have a problem getting it started again - just go into Desktop Properties and make some kind of change and click Apply. And it'll last for a few hours, coming on after a couple of minutes like it's supposed to. But then I'll do some work, leave the machine, and notice later that the screensaver never started up again. It seems to happen randomly, not after I close out of any particular application.

Answer:Screensaver won't start

What applications are running in the background? Some programs may force the screensaver to be disabeled whilst operating. Also make certain that if you are using an optical mouse, that it is not placed on a reflective surface. I always set my monitor to go into stand-by mode after 3 minutes. Screensavers are a thing of the past with modern monitors. Can't save enough power with the entire human race gone rampant.

After I put my machine in standby, or turn on the Zonealarm internet lock, or simply go AFK for awhile and let the machine go into screensaver, when I come back, no Internet connection can be made.

The LAN works fine as I can ping my router and other machines. I can access the router's config via Firefox. Other computers connect to the Internet just fine.

*ip renew does nothing
*ip release/renew does nothing
*Windows "repair internet connection" does nothing
*Clearing IE temp files/cookies/etc does nothing

There is a LAN connection but it seems that for whatever reason, either my router is refusing service to my desktop or my desktop refuses to ask my router for directions. Only a reboot fixes the problem.

Any help, suggestions, etc, appreciated.

Answer:Regaining Internet (not LAN) after standby/internet lock/ screensaver

Wow, that is interesting. Can you TRACERT to internet destinations through the router by IP or does it just drop dead at the router? If the trace goes beyond your router, you could try connecting to a website directly by IP address--that would rule out a potential DNS issue. Does the problem replicate if you borrow the direct internet connection feeding the router? (Or is it a modem/router combo where borrowing the connection isn't an option?)

Hi,
I just got a new Lenovo T400 notebook with Vista Business. When setting my photos screensaver, I don't have the option for Themes. Also, the photos don't stretch to the full screen size. They leave an inch or so of black screen on each side of the screen.

Is this a Vista Business issue? From reading threads on the internet, it sounds like people w/ Vista Home might not have this issue?

Is there any workaround or fix that I can use to fix this? Or is it an unrelated issue?

Answer:WinXp Screensaver won't start

Do you have the Dell provided CD for the OEM (Originial Equipment Manufactuer) installation of WindowsXP ? You should, when I recievd my Dell XPS400 they sent me an entire set of CD's one for the O/S WindowsXP MCE 2005 and several others for the software that came bundled with the PC ! The reason Iam asking is becasue using the Dell CD you can run the System File Checker utility.(SFC) Insert the WindowsXP CD tapping on the shift key so it does not auto run, keep doing that untill the light on you CD/DVD drive stops trying to start running the CD. Running SFC > If one needs to repair a file using Windows XP's "sfc /scannow" [ start > run > type:sfc /scannow ] tool, one often needs the CD. Note the space between the c and the / . I run the SFC every few months just to make sure all Windows files are intact and in their originial version ! Good Luck ,Nick

Hey Peoples,

I have an off the wall question...

I had a little program that was lost to a hard drive death and I don't remember who made it or its name. It isn't QuickStart, or at least the version of QuickStart that I just tried isn't like the old one was.
The program would let me set my system screensaver to None (so it would never kick on by itself) but would let me pick a screensaver that would come on if I clicked either the desktop icon for the program, or the QuickLaunch icon.

I am only interested in freeware, and I mean that in the true sense of the term, and not the oft used version which should be called either trialware, adware, shareware... crippleware... you get the idea. lol Geez, look at me, I am preaching to the choir!

Anyway... any help would be... well... helpful!

Thanks for your time,

Hi;
Like many others I was having a problem with the screensaver not starting, and the monitors not powering down (had the same problem in Vista)
After going through a series of tests using msconfig and getting no results, I started to un-hook hardware. The first thing I un-plugged was my Contour Shuttle Pro v2 NLE editing controller.
BINGO!
The screensavre started right away and the monitors will now power down.
No solution for the moment except to keep it un-plugged from the USB port until I need to use it.
My hardware:Asus P5E-VM-HDMI mobo, core duo E6750 2.66GHz, 4GB RAM, Nvida geForce 9500 GT and 2x Dell 2209WA monitors.

A trouble report was sent to Contour, and I hope they will respond positivly.
I hope this helps someone else.

Answer:No screensaver start -one solution found

I had the same problem of windows 7 not shutting off the monitor or going into screen saver. After reading HalD's post I checked my input devices, I found that my wireless mouse was the culprit.

I was using a Microsoft wireless laser mouse model #1058, I swapped it out for a logitech wireless laser and now all is working as it should.

I find it odd that a Microsoft product does not work with it's latest OS.

Hi folks,

This is my first post. I have finally found the solution to the screen saver problem in WinXP (in my case Media Center Edition). After installing a Microsoft Wireless Optical Desktop (Both version 3 and 5000), the screen saver would not work and the monitor would not shut down (in power saving mode).

With the help of a great tech support guy in India (working for MS) we discovered that if you use msconfig, go to the startup tab and disable "ehtray". Bob's yer uncle.

Hope this helps. I searched EVERYWHERE for the solution and was unsuccessful.

Cheers,

Dave

They have no group policies in effect as well.

Where would you begin, or what would be the easiest solution, all the while providing some scaleability?

Thanks for the help

I have a computer with Vista 32 bit running 24/7 that plays an interactive DVD. I need the screensaver to start after a period of time when no users are interacting with the PC (to prevent screen burn).

Since a DVD is always playing, the computer is considered not idle, so the default screensaver options won't kick in.

How can this be accomplished? Please help!

Answer:screensaver does not start - monitor blanking not working right

Are you using a wireless / optical mouse? If so, that could be a possible reason. Try disconnecting and see if it helps.

I have been having a problem with my computer for a few weeks now. I have Windows Vista on my computer, and have Webroot Virus Scan. When I go to Google's search engine and click on the link, it gets redirected. Sometimes when I turn on my computer, the volume doesn't work at all. Also, sometimes when I turn my computer on, the computer doesn't load, and it says there is a problem with DellDock installation (which I have no clue what that means). I never had any of these problems before this virus showed up. When I run Webroot, it catches the same virus everytime, some type of virus in Java. I have tried researching this virus, but as I said, Google links don't work. Thank you for taking the time to look at my problem.DDS (Ver_10-03-17.01) - NTFSx86 Run by Danny at 16:22:20.01 on Sat 07/24/2010Internet Explorer: 7.0.6001.18000Microsoft? Windows Vista? Is there any way to keep the lock screen from shutting me down if I don't do anything on the keyboard for a minute or 2 minutes, or whatever it is? I followed some instructions that I found on the internet that involve adding ".bak" or ".backup" to the lock screen file in "SystemApps" but it didn't have any effect. Then I clicked on "Settings" in the Start menu and got totally lost in all that stuff.

Hello, I like seeing AM/PM on any time value. I already know if it's AM or PM, but it looks more Proper to see the AM or the PM with whatever time it is.

What Registry modification/Program can help me achieve this?

Thanks

Answer:AM/PM For The Time At The Lock Screen

You can change the time format, how time is shown on Windows notification area freely but AM / PM is regardless of your settings never shown in Windows Clock and lock screen if 24 hour clock has been selected.

To change how time is shown on Windows desktop, select Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Region, click Additional settings:

Now change time formats manually typing any of the following values for short time. Add :ss for long time for seconds:

h:mm
12 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

h:mm tt
12 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

hh:mm
12 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

hh:mm tt
12 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

H:mm
24 hour clock, no leading zero, no AM / PM

H:mm tt
24 hour clock, no leading zero, with AM / PM

HH:mm
24 hour clock, with leading zero, no AM / PM

HH:mm tt
24 hour clock, with leading zero, with AM / PM

Here I have selected 24 hour clock with AM / PM, but it's only shown in notification area. Opening clock does not show AM / PM, nor does lock screen, whatever settings I have chosen as long as I am using 24 hour clock:

Using 12 hour clock AM / PM is always shown in Clock and lock screen if selected.

Got a totally different screensaver problem than found by searching the forum.

I got my screensaver to engage after 15 minutes without any mouse movement.

The thing is, if I am watching a movie, the screensaver will start after the 15 minutes into the movie. Even if I leave a game in the pause mode to get something like food, the screensaver will engage after the 15 minutes. No matter what screensave I use, it still happens.

Why is this happening?

I'm using Vista Ultimate x64 SP1

ps: Please don't say "Why use a screensaver?" This isn't supposed to be happening in the first place.

I recently invested in a new computer with Vista. There was a screensaver that I used to have on my XP machine that I liked, so I downloaded it again to the new computer. Unfortunately, not only does it not run but it also won't be uninstalled. Both procedures tell me that a file called "swflash.ocx" cannot be found. Does anyone know what the heck that is, whether I can get it elsewhere, or barring any of that, how I can completely uninstall the screensaver and remove it from the list in "Uninstall and Change Programs" in the Control Panel. An email to the author of the screensaver remains unanswered. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Screensaver problem with Vista

With Vista remember that it is a NEW OS and a lot of these things we liked and ran on XP will NOT work.

Check back at the web site that you downloaded the screen saver and see if they have instructions on using this with Vista.

Yo might provide a link to this site so we can check it also.

After a fresh re-install of Vista Home Premium 32bit on a Dell Inspiron 1501, screen saver will not work. All PWR management settings are correct and screensaver will only work if I click "preview" in Screen saver properties. Any ideas?
All updates are done / no wireless pointing device.

Answer:Screensaver not working in Vista

Are you using a wireless mouse?
Maybe this will help:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/913405

There is a section regarding an update for Microsoft HID Non-User Input Data Filter
That might be the problem.

My Vista screensaver will not activate. I don't use a wireless mouse or keyboard, I have checked all background applications and services. I did go into safe mode and the screensaver worked. I tried the same thing with msconfig and use only core services and startups and it didn't work. I cannot figure it out and it is really making me mad.

Any ideas?
Thanks.

Answer:Vista Screensaver Will not activate

My first guess is if you are using a laptop is check the power settings see if something is telling it to stay on.

Okay with WMP 11 and Vista.

In tools > options > player tab > I have uncheded "Allow screensaver during playback"

but the SS keeps coming up.

I really don't want to resort to turning it off each time I use this to watch something.

Answer:Solved: WMP 11 and Vista can't get rid of screensaver?

FIgured it out myself.... If WMP is playing due to the windows sideshow if you open another instance of WMP no matter the settings it won't stop the Screensaver. When I took the WMP out of the Windows SIdeshow it didn't start on bootup and now it no longer ignores the SS setting when I start WMP.
