taskbar colour in custom XP themes

Question: taskbar colour in custom XP themes

Anyone here who messes with Windows XP display themes, I've changed my theme but the taskbar blinking colour (when a window is trying to steal focus or msn messenger) is so close to the regular colour that it's really hard to see it when you're not watching for it. Does anyone know how to change this colour?

Preferred Solution: taskbar colour in custom XP themes

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have not had much experience with windows 7, however just deciding to give it another chance i set out to install a custom theme.

http://dvkndn.deviantart.com/art/Color-COOL-FINAL-Version-169171283 - Is the theme that i am trying to use, i have used the universal patcher and patched the dll files required, the theme works however the taskbar does not change (which is the main reason i want a new theme - hate).

After afew google searches a could not find a useful tutorial on how to do this properly, i also went to the extent of downloading a registry editor (ResHacker) but have no idea how to make sense of it.

If anyone has any great tutorials explaining how to properly apply the taskbar in the custom themes or even better have the time to give me a quick simple run down i would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

I installed custom themes a little while ago and have been using them ever since though when I booted up my laptop today the task bar was like that of a classic theme and I've no idea why. The sound and background are still the same. This only occurs when I switch to any of them the themes I've made however stay the same probably because the themes change the look of the task bar and start menu while the self made change only the colour.

If you do not have a lot of additional customizations, I'd suggest running the System File Checker which will return your files to default (and finad and fix any system files that have issues)

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Then repatch your system, and try to apply one of your themes. See if that fixes the issue. If not, we'll ask some more questions, and try some other things

Anybody know where I can get basic color theme variations for Windows XP besides Blue, Olive, and Silver?

I am not interested in getting any WindowsBlind themes with all new icons, objects, etc, and I don't wish to install TGTSoft's ThemeXP, I just want some different color variations of the Luna theme, eg. Longhorn's Slate would be nice...even though there are some around on the web for that, but what about other colors.

Question: Custom themes

Hello, sorry if this post is in the wrong place but i am new.

Ok, well i have been trying to install a custom theme(Vista Reflections by =counteralchemist on deviantART) in vista ultimate x32 and have had no luck. I have used vistaglazz to patch the shell files and the msstyles but cannot get this theme to show up in the themes drop down list. I am not completely sure how to install these things, so if someone could help me that would be nice!

Thanks

Answer:Custom themes

My advice is to never use a theme that isnt by Microsoft. Patching system files can lead to system instability and in a worst case scenario you will need to reinstall vista. If you look at the theme you want to install its been created by a 15 year old kid. Loads of people install themes created by teenagers and then wonder why there pcs f****d.

But anyway if you really want to install a theme look at this thread Vista Glazz, is it worth getting it?

Whats the best way to load or use custom themes that wont add much as far as processes or memory usage?

Haven't looked at this for a long time.

Answer:Custom Themes

Look for UXTheme Multi-Patcher (Neowin Edition) 4.0 to make it so you can load 3rd party themes through windows. Then you can get themes from deviantart.com, themexp.org and a bunch of other places. Just drop the themes into (Windows Drive):\WINDOWS\Resources\Themes\

Does anyone know how to edit a custom windows xp theme? I downloaded and used the theme, which I really like, except for the scroll bar. The button or whatever you want to call it is the same color as the scroll bar background. So it's hard to see where the button is to drag up and down.

Any ideas on software, etc? I tried googling but couldn't really find anything.

Hello!
I read the tutorial here about enabling custom themes using a small software called "UxStyle" but I don't want to mess up my new system/laptop. So can anyone confirm that this software does not touch system files (.dll thingies) at all?

Also, I read in the official forum of this little software that it enables themes, which changes window borders and appearance, but doesn't change buttons (and I guess animations...); so are there any other differences (visually speaking) with using the risky UxTheme.dll?

And can I easily go back to the default Windows 7 themes without any problem?

Thanks in advance

Found this when I've decided to use my own theme colors in the browser...

This will cover the basic of basics for creating your own themes for the Chrome (or Chromium) browser.

Some straight-forward ways to do it are mentioned here below.

1. Online theme creator:
Chrome Theme Creator - Create Custom Google Chrome Themes Online

2. Install the Theme Creator extension:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/d...cbjdonic?hl=en
Example using the online theme creator:
-choose a theme name
-choose a background color
-pick your colors
-pack & install/download theme (*.crx file)

Preview example: my theme called DayBreak
Simple colors, gradients or pictures allowed for the backgrounds...

source: http://windows7themes.net/10-pretty-awesome-windows-7-themes-futuristic-shell-themes.html

its a shell theme as they call it.

i downloaded it, extract it and left with two folders: Fonts and Theme.

now Fonts i put it in the "Fonts" folder of windows.

but theme? its an instalation package, that installs itself on C:\Windows\Ressources\Themes

Installed it there, but nothing, i mess around with personalisation and didnt find anything to change windows to the desired shell theme...

Answer:Windows 7 custom themes

As with previous Windows versions, you have to "patch" some Microsoft system files for third-party themes (ie those which are not signed by Microsoft) to be recognised.

Hi, I have a windows 8.1 laptop and I'm trying to install this theme to it right now. I'm new to custom themes but I've already used UxStyle to patch and ran the RIbbon Disabler as per the instructions. However, for some reason, whenever I install themes all I get is the basic colors that the theme is supposed to be, as if I just went under the personalize settings and changed the window color to white. There are no rounded windows as shown in the image and the minimize, restore down, and close buttons look the same as always (in the picture they are shown as grey & red circles). I'm probably missing something because I'm so new to this, but I've followed the basic instructions for installing themes.

Answer:installing custom themes

Seagull,

Try utilizing http://download.cnet.com/WindowBlinds/3000-2072_4-10026826.html
as your express file fetcher.Run it, import the theme package into the program, and you should be able to choose the theme u want in the program and it will set the theme utilizing the program. You have to have a program that rips the information and converts it into a code that the 8.1 will recognize, not just the specific files you downloaded.

Interested in finding out if anyone is doing custom theming on Win8 like was done a lot with Win7.

I tried to do some of this on my Tablet PC using WindowBlinds -- but that crashed it so bad that I had to do a Refresh, which basically required my to reinstall everything again.

On Win7, I'm using the app that allows non-MS themes, but I didn't get around to configuring that on my Tablet.

Answer:Anybody doing Custom themes on Win8?

Hi Mark! I have a thread up on full customization. Win 8 is pretty angry right now with the eye candy, but with some digging, you can trick it out. I'm working on custom tiles for applications right now, splash screens, icons, user tiles and main metro layouts. I should have a full documented tutorial here soon. I'm attending the MS conferance @MS next week. Hopefully I can a bit more solid documentation!

This issue is usually caused by a poorly authored theme.
The only way I know of to stop this from happening is to delete the offending 3rd party theme.

To login, start you PC in safe mode.
If the theme is a ThemePack, Copy/Paste or type this command in the search under the start button.
%UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Themes
Delete the offending theme.

Otherwise, browse to C:\Windows\Resources\Themes

1. Okay first you need to find out which Service Pack you are running. To do this simple press the Windows flag key+Pause/Break key. This is going to open the system properties window. Here it is going to say which service pack you are running
2. Now you have some downloading to do.
First get: The appropriate Uxtheme.dll file
If you are running Service Pack 1 then get this file.
If you are running Service Pack 2 then get this file.
3. Unzip the file to your desktop
4. Now you need to download the Replacer(I recommend getting a stable version). The replacer efficiently replaces your system files and is supposed to be completely safe. This program also backs up your file in case you need to revert the changes.
5. Unzip the Replacer to your desktop. Make sure you read the "readme" because it has some important tips on how to revert those changes that you made.

Now you are ready to replace your uxtheme.dll file

1. Now double click on the replacer file (replacer.cmd)
2. Then it will ask you to drag and drop the original system file you want to replace. So go to the System32 folder and somewhere near the bottom you are going to see the uxtheme.dll file. Drag and drop it into the window.

Hello,
I have patched and rebooted using the UltraUXThemePatcher and it said it was successful. I've followed instructions of putting the theme file and the folder into my windows/resources/themes folder, then selecting it from the personalisation window.
The theme changes, however some themes don't work as expected. It's the same problem with most themes - the explorer window. For example, it's supposed to be like this:
http://puu.sh/42EX8.png

However my one is like this:
http://puu.sh/42EXF.png

The color has changed, albeit not to the one its supposed to be, and there is some strange border around the window. Only the buttons to close, maximize and minimize changed as intended to. Same for most themes.

I'm new to the theme stuff, maybe I missed out on some step, but all the tutorials I've seen only show to patch, then put it in the folder and click it to activate it.

Thanks in advance.

Hey guys,

i checked the forums if someone has a similar problem to mine, but didnt find anything. If i just overlooked it im sorry, my english isnt the best, so i maybe just searched wrong.

But here is my problem. I am using custom themes for my win7 x64. I used universal theme patcher to be able to do so.

Now i have several problems, first of: the back- and forward button and the windows icon in the taskbar doesnt change.

But my biggest problem is that sometimes, not everytime i run the computer, i get this weird horizontal stripes. Most of the time they are black, but sometimes they are white.

The screenshot seems a little bit strange. Thats because i took a screenshot, of me editing a previous screenshot in paint. I did this because while i edited it, more lines appeared.

Im using the spaceblueberries theme from deviantart, but this doesnt matter cause all of the problems occur on any custom theme. The second problem with the bars even appears in the normal win 7 aero theme from windows.

Guess i broken something somewhere :/

My biggest problem is the second one, and i highly assume that it is because of the custom theme. Im also running rocket dock in the background but thats basically it.

Hope someone knows a solution and thanks in advance

Edit: heres the screen:

Welcome to the Seven Forums

If this is happening with all third-party custom themes and the Windows 7 default Aero theme then I am making a guess that it is your graphic card drivers may need to be updated, go to your computer makers website and look for the latest drivers using your model number

My system has defaulted the taskbar to the Windows98 style. I would like to get it back to the normal XP look.

I have tried loading many Themes with. They all seem to load fine but the taskbar fails to change. I have checked the services running and the themes service is running. Also I have checked the system properties/Advanced tab and I have everything set properly.

Anyone have any ideas on what could be forcing the taskbar into classic mode?

Hi folks,

I know this isn't quite the right place to post this, but it kinda involves some theming issues, so here :

I have been using Hyperdesk (W7 Edition - Darkmatter Subspace) for a little while, and I am having a pretty annoying problem when it comes to flashing taskbar buttons, actually because these simply aren't flashing anymore. I use Windows Live Messenger quite a lot, and this instant taskbar flashing (on unread messages) is more than useful to me.

This issue has been shortly discussed on the Hyperdesk forums (without actually fixing it up), according to some guy it is due to the fact that Hyperdesk themes don't have transparency.

That being said, It'd be great if some of you had a fix for this (I mean get the buttons working back). Otherwise, I would have to look for an alternative to keep notified about instant messages (again, your ideas are more than welcome).

Thanks !

If this is a brand new machine, I would recommend contacting HP and getting it on record you have a problem. They should be able to get you fixed up without a problem, but if you continue to have problems or it resurfaces, you will then have the option of returning it under warranty for a new one that works correctly. If you had it for a while, I would recommend trying a system restore to a date when it did work correctly. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I've been using a black/grey theme that changes all the fonts to white and all of the backgrounds to black/grey. Sometimes, I have to switch to the original theme because I can't find the buttons on certain programs.

I don't mind switching, but everything time I do switch themes, the GUI, taskbar, and background of explorers do not switch back to the custom theme color. I've tried restarting and reinstalling everything, but nothing works. Answer:Taskbar colour is not changing !

For you to get the "Window Color and Appearance" window that you show in google is to have Windows 7 selected in Aero themes (personalization window). You have "One Piece Theme" selected. This may be causing your issue.

See if you can change the taskbar color with "Windows 7" as your Aero theme. Then select "One Piece Theme" and see if the taskbar stays the color you changed it to.

Hello!

Active (open) programs in the task bar colour red if I hover over them with the mouse. Sometimes (often) some become red even if I don't hover over them and are minimized - and it's distracting. How can I prevent that or even disable the red colouring?

Thank you.

Answer:Reddish colour in the taskbar

Click on the desktop, and choose "personalisation";

Choose "Window Colour";

Go into the "Item" box; and choose "Selected Items", or whatever item you want to change, change the item to whatever colour you want and click on "Apply"

Remember to use a text colour that is a different colour to the background colour, as otherwise it may be difficult or impossible to see.

Hey guys,

I'm running Windows 7 7100 RC on a Dell XPS M1330. I'm able to run aero no problems at all, but for some reason I can't change the colour of the taskbar?

I can change the window title bar colours in the Personalize section of Control Pannel, but it has no effect on the Taskbar (even when transparency is turned on). As a consequence of this, all the items on my taskbar appear in white against a black background - it's high contrast and really annoying. Can anybody help me?

As an additional to this problem, for some reason the taskbar only becomes transparent when I set it to auto-hide. When it's sitting there normally at the bottom of the screen, it's opaque like the screenshot I posted. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Jonny

Answer:Taskbar won't change colour

Well, as far as I'd go, I'd do these things.

1. Check to make sure I haven't hit the high contrast theme button.
2. Try another aero theme.
3. If that doesn't work, try a non-aero theme, such as Win7 Basic
4. Click on the Windows color button and mess around with the settings there.
5. If that doesn't work, then check to make sure you have the latest graphics drivers that are compatible with Windows 7.
6. Baring that, mess around with the screen settings for your graphics card and see if that resolves anything.
7. Get frustrated and toss it out your window.

Hey,

Basically I am in the following situation:
I am a web developer - therefore I like to have applications such as Opera, Firefox, IETester, FileZilla, Visual Web Developer, DreamWeaver and several other programs open at the same time;
I am currently revising for an exam - therefore I may need to have Opera, Firefox, Word, Excel and several other programs open at the same time;
I sometimes like to watch films, listen to music, play games etc etc to chill out a bit - perhaps in a break from my revision.

In each of the three above situations, I like to pin the icons to the taskbar. Problem is that to have them all pinned to the taskbar would make it overflow - even with DisplayFusion installed with a taskbar on both screens.

Is there any way to group icons into one icon on the taskbar - so hovering over an icon called, say, Developer, will bring up a list of Developer icons (without having to open a window and open the programs from there)? Alternatively is there a way to change "modes" so that, on clicking Developer from a list, it will repopulate the taskbar with any programs I have previously added to the taskbar when in that mode? I do not want to create a user account for each mode - thats just long.

If anyone knows of a way to do this or a program which may be able to achieve this then please let me know. Thanks in advance for any help.

I recently reinstalled Windows 8.1 after having my hard disk replaced. Everything has been alright so far except that my taskbar colouring seems to be off.

The jump list (popup) menu of my taskbar icons has the same background colour as the background colour of the start screen. As a result, this popup menu is not white but instead the same colour as the start screen background colour. (I have verified that
changing the start screen background colour changes the popup menu too, but white is not an option for the start screen and I would prefer to have them as two different colours.)
Furthermore the "X" for closing all windows and the "pin" for pinning the program to the taskbar do not seem to be in the right place.
Thank you.

Did you try to change color and taskbar option at Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Personalization\Color and Appearance?

I've been using windows classic over basic/aero due to streaming purposes (streaming with aero creates issues and I'm not a fan of basic), I like a darker/dark grey theme most of the time as it's easier on the eyes and the bright white windows classic taskbar is a bit of a pain, but I can't figure out a way to change it via personalize\windows colour or anything else.

Hi Guys,

The Luna and Royale themes can be downloaded here:

Hey guys. Can I actually specify a custom size for these taskbar icons other than small or large as here? I have so many of them and my taskbar have already two rows and sometimes when I open programs or whatever else that is NOT included as a shortcut button on the taskbar, it takes extra space at which point the taskbar becomes scrollable with 3 rows. Hello,

For my Window 7 taskbar, I enjoy using custom icons. I also enjoy using labels on my taskbar ("Combine when taskbar is full.")

If I chose labels, whenever I open a program with a custom icon, the icon reverts back to it's default!

When I close that program, though, the icon reverts back to my custom one.

If I choose no labels ("Always combine, hide labels"), then my custom icon remains the same when closing and opening the program.

Example (no labels):

Is it possible? If so, how?

I don't think that is possible. Besides, the "Show Desktop" control all the way in the right bottom corner would be in the way. Why don't you tweak the Vista sidebar ( Vista Windows Sidebar - Reinstate on Windows 7 ). That is compatible with the taskbar.

A not too well toolbar problem exists. The third party extensions and toolbars are stripped when you launch from the taskbar. Pinned sites on the taskbar are not the same as the url that you try to pin. But if you drag the site to the taskbar while holding down the shift key it will be put there as a url and the third party extensions will be intact.
