WinXP - Lost File Names when viewing Thumbnails.

Question: WinXP - Lost File Names when viewing Thumbnails.

Previously this was just a minor annoyance but now I need a fix. In many of my folders I am missing file names for my files when they're viewed in Thumbnail mode. I have no idea what's causing this to happen, and I've looked everywhere I can think of for a fix.

Can anyone point me to a solution?

I guess I'm not able to delete my thread so I'll edit to post the solution instead. It's a result from holding shift while opening a folder in Thumbnail mode. To correct the missing file names I simply had to hold shift while opening the folder for a second time. Annoying.

Preferred Solution: WinXP - Lost File Names when viewing Thumbnails.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Can someone provide me with a step by step in modifying the registry to show flv thumbnails just as I am able to see mpeg and avi and wmv files.

I have some instructions but I didn't quite understand it all on how/what to modify. I will include such info as I have ...need some experienced help for a newbie ! Thank you.

But here is how you can make your videos in extensions like flv and 3gp to show thumbnail preview in the Windows Explorer just like the avi and wmv files.

1. The following trick needs registry tweaking so you can either backup your registry or delete the key that you are just going to create.

2. Open a notepad and copy and paste the following code as it is.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@=?{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}?

3. Remember you need to copy the entire code and then save the file with any name but with .reg extension say abc.reg (If this don?t work then paste Windows
Registry Editor Version 5.00 before REGEDIT4 and try again)

4. Double click this newly created file and click on yes afterwards.

5. Congratulations, flv video files will show a thumbnail preview in the explorer.

Note:

Similarly, you can make the other video files like .3gp, .mp4, .mov or .vob to show thumbnail preview in the explorer. For that you just need to replace .flv with the extension you are making

Example:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.mp4\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-... Read more

Answer:Viewing flv thumbnails in explorer WinXp

I remember my first time doing something like this. I asked the same question you have since I was afraid I'd brake my computer.

Click start, click run, type notepad and click ok.

Copy and paste the following text into the new window, just like you would with Word or any other text editing program:

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.flv\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}]
@=”{c5a40261-cd64-4ccf-84cb-c394da41d590}”

Make sure there are no extra spaces before REGEDIT4 or after 590}"

Save the file to your Desktop as (something).reg and double click the new file that's been created. Windows should ask you if you'd like to import it into your registry. Click yes and reboot to finish.

Sometimes, the file will open in Notepad instead of being imported. This rarely happens but it's not hard to fix. Just post here again if it does and I'll walk you through fixing it.

I dont know where else to post this, so i posted here...

Whenever, i open "My Pictures" and the view is in thumbnails mode, i get the following:

As you can see, the file names are not there. What do i do to get filenames displayed under the folders like this?:

I have a feeling there's a simple solution for this...

Answer:Thumbnails don't display file names

Undo the thumbnail thing, so make it like icons.

Then (while holding shift), click it and make it thumbnails again.

Hello all,
I have what I consider to be a rather unique situation. I have recently been trying to restore an old, uncropped version of a file from about 10 years and about 3 computers ago, naturally impossible under general circumstances. However, the thumbnail for the file still shows the original version, while opening the image in windows media viewer or ms paint reveals that the file in fact contains the new version.

My query was since the thumbnail seems to be saving the original non-cropped version, has it kept a copy of the old file? If so, can the old version be opened so I can view it? I lack information about thumbnails to know whether this is possible or impossible.

Thanks for any assistance.

Answer:Viewing source file for thumbnails.

You would need a copy of the original file. A thumbnail is just a smaller version and does not contain this file. The best you could do is resize the image to whatever size is needed but the quality of the image would suffer.

I know that if in Folder Options I choose "Always show icons, never thumbnails' the '.thumbs' file stops being created everytime you view an image file in Explorer. But I do want to see thumbnails, or more specifically I like the idea of viewing the image of the *.jpg, *.dng etc. when in Explorer. However, what I don't like is getting a '.thumbs' file being created.
I'm sure it is possible to have one without the other but can't recall how to do so.
Thank you

Answer:Viewing thumbnails as images but without .thumbs file

In Windows Explorer [Win7 and earlier] go to Organize, Folder and Search Options, View tab and the first item Files and Folders and uncheck the first thing about Always show icons, never thumbnails. At least that is what works with my Win7 Ult. But then I use the Extra Large Icons view for pictures and don't get the .thumbs part.

WinXPHome:
When I try to copy My Documents to a DVD+RW I keep getting messages "cannot copy because file name or extension is tooo long". It then stops copying the rest of the folder and I cant proceed.
I used to get this message with Win98 a lot. Uusually it would be a html file tghat I saved from the web and I would need to shorten the file name for it to be copied. Since I changed to WinXP over the last 2 years I have never had this problem.
Im therefore begining to wonder whether there is a recent registry error/entry to account for this?
I would have thought that XP would easily overcome this problem of copying long file names etc.

Answer:(Solved) viewing a .pps file on WinXP

You can download the Power Point viewer from Microsoft's web site. I don't have a specific URL, but they have Word, Excel, and Power Point viewers for free download. Go to Microsoft and do a search on "Power Point Viewer".

Question: Viewing Thumbnails

How do I enable the Thumbnail View for Folders in Windows Explorer for Windows 2000. When I try to enable it, I cant see pictures.

Answer:Viewing Thumbnails

You question is kind of a contradiction. Are you trying to view pictures? Th following views are available and the choice is made by clicking on the one you want using the views icon to the right of the folders icon:
Thumbnails
Tiles
Icons
List
Details

Pictures are usually seen in the Thumbnail view.

You must click on the section in the explorer tree first. Once done, click on the views icon to see the files that have opened on the right screen in the view of your choice.

NOTE: this is not the word VIEW on the Toolbar. It's a square icon with tiny circles to the right of the folder icon.

Probably a security measure. You could try the MS instructions but substitute regsvr32 /u to un-register the dll in question, though I'm not recommending it. I don't know of any other software that will produce a thumbnail of HTML pages.

Hi, I mainly use my computer for photo editing and web browsing, I've got 1000's of photos that I'm constantly viewing and working with.

I've noticed that when I increase the thumbnails of the photos I'm viewing to the largest size that it can go the picture quality deteriorates, it becomes slightly blurry, it looks as though its being interpolated and not displaying the actual photo.

When I decrease the thumbnail size halfway it becomes shaper but when I increase it again it just looks as though it's simply interpolating the image.

The issue is that I like to display my thumbnails at the largest size and it's frustrating to see a decrease in the picture quality, I dont notice it in the photo gallery.

My monitor is an Nec 2490, I've got the dpi setting at 120 dpi, I've notice that when I have it set to 144 dpi I dont notice the decrease in picture quality. Does anyone notice this as well? any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Stu

Answer:Degraded picture quality when viewing large thumbnails

my guess is the thumbnails are a set size, so resizing the thumbnail near its native size will look sharper than when you make it larger than its native size. and the actually display size (Small/ Medium etc..) in explorer is just a zoom feature.

Well, new install with Windows 10. I noticed while viewing my .ico files the thumbnails are corrupted.
I tried rebuilding the icon cache as well as purging the thumbnail cache.
Not sure whats left to try.
While using winaero tweaker I also noticed that when selecting icons for customization, they come up as blank icons. It never did this before and this problem just started to recently happen.
Although they work when applying the settings.
Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Degraded picture quality when viewing large thumbnails

I think Windows use embedded thumbnails to view pictures. Generally JPEG from digital cameras will have such thumbnails, and rather than read the whole multi-megabyte file, Windows will just grab the thumbnail at the start. They're not particularly large, and probably won't even fit the space in "extra large icon" in view. Note that the view menu only has preset sizes (large, extra large, and medium) for thumbnails. In XP, you could set thumbnails size using TweakUI. Since TweakUI isn't available to Vista, you can try setting that setting manually in the registry, but I wouldn't know what key is involved.

Since you work with pics a lot, may I suggest, using xnview (freeware) for image browsing? It has a LOT of options you can customize, including thumbnail size (try sticking to high quality thumbnails). Some people will also suggest IrFanView, but I haven't had a chance to play with it.

Being very new to Vista I have yet to discover a lot of its tricks. At the moment I get quite worried when clicking on a folder to, for example, drag a file to it, the only indication of this selection is a very feint, and hardly discernible, light blue. On several occasions the file has ended up in the wrong folder. I am sure there must be a way to make this a clearly seen darker blue (as with all previous Windows versions) - for the benefit of those of us with eyesight less than 20/20!

I have a 160 GB HD NTFS file system with 118 GB free space. My Documents and setting folder has 8.87 GB with 12,388 Files and 816 folders that are many layers deep.

The problem: Every so often my XP professional OS will not accept a new long file name (less than 50 characters and spaces) but will accept an 8 character (DOS) name.

What is wrong? Have I reached a limit because of the long file names? Or too many files in a single folder? Or?

I run into the same problem with by back-up Hard Drive which has a FAT32 file system.

The problem seems to go away, at least for a while, if I restart my Dell Dimension 9100 PC.

Thank you, Supportbob4
9/9/05
I have replicated my problem both for my NTFS drive and the FAT32 drive.

I also finally got an error message which tells me the problem:
The maximum character and space limit of 255 includes file name plus the names of all the stacked folders after My Dicuments! The whole file path!

It can be very confusing because I was able to make it more than 255 characters and spaces but all of sudden it reached a threshold where it will no longer work until I shortened the file name back to 255. Going between hard drives seemed to make it recover sometimes when I had a longer than 255 path but then all of a sudden it stopped working.

I need to keep my folder names shorter and be cautious on length of file names too when I have many stacked folders.

Answer:Long file names not accepted Short DOS names ok

From what I recall the WinXP limits it to 255 characters, filenames written command prompt are 253 characters, and those include the filename and extension.

I have been asked to provide a co-worker with many links presently organized in my Folders Center within several different named Folders (and subfolders) within my IE Explorer~Favorites.

Yes I can individually select each 'Favorite' folder, drill down to each link which I have named as per MY mental tag: and then copy the links individually to some other form , or worse yet sending several dozen links individually by email.

I would prefer to locate and copy whatever database or location these reside- and bulk copy (export to a spreadsheet or word format) so that rename certain items in a manner which might make more sense to other users - then post to a shared drive for future reference by the entire department.

Surely this stuff exists someplace as a DB or file within the Favorites Center under headings
1: named folder,
2: Sub-folder name
2: renamed 'tag' and
3: actual URL link.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the board,

Your file associations have been messed up. Try this:

1) Right Click once on any of the problem .avi files
2) Choose "Open With.. "
3) "Choose Program" (At the bottom)
4) Select the program you want the avi's opened with (Media Player, etc.)
5)Check the box at the bottom that says "Always use this program to open the selected file type" (or something close to that)
6)Then refresh your view and the thumbnails should be back :)

I have 2 computers, 1 with WinXP Pro and the other with Win98. The Pro computer I use mostly for graphic and video editing and such the other is for other family members to surf.

I recently purchased a Canon A70 and have taken some video with it. When I went to play it on my Pro system I could hear the sound but could not see the video.

So I took the file over to the 98 system and it played perfectly. I though I was moving forward in technology with WinXP Pro but it seems that my old 98 system can do things the new system can't.

I have all the latest drives for everything including a new video card. I have numerous codecs installed. There are two programs I use to troubleshoot situations like this.

Gspot codec information is one and it tells me that I should be able to play this video and see it because Direct draw can play it and there are multiple codecs on my machine able to handle it.

My question is Why can I play it on a simple win98 system that has nothing special on it and its equipment is about 4 years old but on my fairly new "high end" system I can get it to play?

Any help understanding this is appreciated.
Thanks

Answer:WinXP Pro vs 98 viewing video

98 is good for driver-base and is the least hassle out of all os's for dv editing. However, I suspect there's too much going on in b/ground on your xp pc. When capturing or ptt (printing to tape) or burning it's best to turn all off except non-vitals. Av, firewall, system restore can all interfer with dv processes. Also check to see if DMA is enables on xp hd's.

Cannot keep "thumbnails" as default viewing option throughout Windows Explorer programs & functions

Following the uninstall I can no longer see thumbnails of the pictures in my picture folders despite what I set in 'view'.I would appreciate your guidance in how to restore the thumbnail setting. I guess it is something to do with associating the files but I am out of ideas.I am running Windows Me.

Hello.
When i open a windows folder that contains JPEG files i can't see the thumbnails and the slideshow. My pictures are OK if i open them. Why this is happening? Can be fixed without big effort?
The problem occured after removing a dialer using a mix of various programs like: Ewido, Adaware, Cleanup, CCleaner, Avast, Spybot Search and destroy, HiJackThis.
Thank you in advance.

Answer:Lost JPEG thumbnails

You can run Restore Thumbnail Views in XP from here http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm, line 17. Just download and run the fix.

Hi guys,

Newbie here. I'm after some help please. I've lost all my thumbnails and the ability to view pictures in my folders.
Any help would be great.

Answer:Lost folder thumbnails.....

It is possible it was disabled in error, following these instructions will show you how thay can be turned off or on.

Thumbnail Previews - Enable or Disable

If you want to speed up browsing around in explorer, you might think about disabling thumbnail previews in folders.

Note that this works in Windows 7 or Vista
To make this change, click the Organize button on any folder, and choose Folder and Search Options from the menu.

Click the View tab, and then check the Always show icons, never thumbnails checkbox.

Click OK, and you’re done.

Until yesterday my thumbnails for video clips had images of what the clip was about.
Today thoise images dissapeared, they have been replaced by Realplayer, "R" symbol. I don't know what I did to change things ,hopefully you can tell me.

Again THANKS

DAN58, The first thing I'd try is to open that folder and delete any thumbs.db files. They are hidden files so you have to go into Folder Options>View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply/OK then restart your computer. If that doen't correct the problem click Start>Run and type in:

regsvr32 shmedia.dll

Click OK

Restart your computer.

Note that the spacing is important.

So my PC is behaving very strangely. It all started when I accidentally, permanently deleted some video clips I didn't mean to delete. I shut down the PC, removed the hard drive, and installed it into another, Windows 7 PC, as a secondary HDD. I used EaseUS data recovery wizard. Unfortunately It was not able to recover the files.

While I was on the windows 7 PC I attempted to view my user/appdata folder, for the win10 drive, which then proceeded to ask for permission which I granted. Answer:Lost Permissions, Shortcuts, Thumbnails, etc...

Hi, so your permissions are borked on your user folders.

I'm assuming you haven't yet graduated to using disk imaging which allows you to rescue yourself without technical help (Macrium Reflect -free- is often recommended here + boot disk + external storage.

I'd hope you've got backups of the data, at least.

You can try the permissions repairs offered by Tweaking.com's Repair tool (free/commercial), but you do need to observe the precautionary steps and not just rush into the repairs and launch everything.

Untick the repairs you're not interested in.

Be cautious. Best start by creating a disk image.

You may be better off creating a new user, and deleting that user, assuming the damage is limited to one user's folders.

You can always access otherwise inaccessible folders by booting your PC from a live boot CD, or even in the last resort, a bootable Win 10 medium- but that limits you to the command prompt.

Good luck!

I used to be able, in web page view, see a thumbnailof an image file, (bmp and tif anyway), in the left handpanel just under the file info section. Now, for some reason, that feature has gone away.I can still pick thumbnail view and see thumbnails forthe icons for bmps, but what I had was the ability to have the file namesin a list, but when I clicked on one, it's image would popup in that left hand pane.I can't remember how I got it to work that way; does anyoneknow how to get that feature back? Thanks so much.

Okay hey guys.. Quite a hard one to explain here..

When i go into my pictures from start menu, all my pictures have no icons/thumbnails.. They only have descriptions underneath..
When i click on the description it suddenly stops responding.. Bit strange and is doing my nut in! :D

The major problem is that i cannot view my photos but i also cannot upload onto sites such as facebook as a result..

Note: I have scanned for viruses/trojans and there is nothing..

Could these files have been moved or something.. Any help appreciated..

Steve

Answer:No thumbnails in my pictures folder.. Files lost?? Then not responding.

I cannot quite imagine how it looks. What do you mean that there are only descriptions underneath? Are you referring to the image name?
Have you tried right clicking on one of them, and then choosing "Open with..." and open them with one of your image programs?

We had a small problem at our little Legion yesterday. The whole programing system was lost. I recovered everything except, when it boots up, it doesn't ask for sign-in of users. I have gone to the main drive and each person has their own files under their names. How do I get that to open when that name signs in?

My Hard disk died, and I had 2 programs living on my desktop which don't show up on my Ghost backup disk, and I can't remember their names. Can anyone help me remember their names so I can search for them on the internet?

The first program lets you mod down your privileges when you're running mail & browser programs, so that if you stumble into malware it can't run as administrator.

The second program reformats email by removing '>'s and 'nl's so it doesn't look so awful when you forward it.

That's the problem with icons - you use them so much you don't have to remember the names of useful programs.

While browsing My Pictures in thumbnail view one specific folder named Trips suddenly fails to display sub-folder names under the thumbnails in the right pane. To the best of my knowledge this occurs on only one folder of many within My Pictures that have sub-folders. I created a new folder at the same level, moved all the sub-folders to it and the names reappeared. I then deleted the offending folder and renamed the new folder back to Trips and the names disappeared. I renamed the Trips folder Trips_Events and the names reappeared.

Unfortunately some 1600 pictures in the various subs are cataloged in a photo organizer that is dependent on the original folder name.

Any thoughts on how to correct this?

I have XP SP2 running on a home network using a workgroup. Fast User Switching is set so that members of the family can login easily. The bottom line, before I write the steps that got me here below, is that I would get the message that my account was locked out and I needed to contact my administrator. This is on a home network using a workgroup not a domain. When I logged in as the computer XP administrator only my Fast switched account was visible. I reset my password and then tried to log into my account and got the same locked out message. All the data is there when I go in as administrator, but all fast switch users are gone and my account that was used to install XP will not login.

This started when I went into my account and then tried to switch to one of the other accounts. That account told me that the password was wrong. i when back to my account and changed the password. That fast switch account would still not let me in, nor would any of the other fast switch accounts. I removed the password from one of the accounts and still got a wrong password message. I then logged out of my account and tried to log back into it, and that is when I started getting the message that my account was locked out and I needed to contact my administrator. I am working on a newly refurbished computer and when viewing some web sites the screen appears to turn off. The monitor goes completely dark like the power cord is loose, and then comes back up. This happens repeatedly and its impossible to do any work. If I switch tabs in Firefox or minimize the web browser, the issue goes away.

This is happening in both IE6 and Firefox 2.0.0.2. I uninstalled Java SDK and updates, I installed Flash, I ran Spybot, I updated the Dell Intel chipset, I updated the on-board video driver to a 2006 release, and the machine was scanned with AVG AntiVirus. And I rebooted a few times.

It doesn't happen on every website, either. Of those that do flash, some flash worse than others.

Has anyone seen this before? Does anyone have any ideas?

I don't know how this happened, but the only colors I have are gray, blue, yellow and white. My desktop picture is mainly blue and green. I have a HP Media PC with a HP vs17 monitor. According to the specs, it is set up correctly. I went to the menu (located on the side of the monitor) and tried setting to the default and that didn't work. I went into properties and noticed that the default color is blue and the color scheme doesn't include anything but the colors I mentioned. There is no red, orange, etc. What happened? I haven't downloaded anything. This is a new computer and monitor and I am not familiar with this set up. I definitely need help. Thanks... Liz

Answer:Lost Some of My Viewing Colors

Does the monitor have an on screen disply when you set it up? If so can you see any red there? If not then the display is probably bad. If the monitor has an on screen menu with red colors displayed try reseating the connector to the computer, Check both ends of the signal cable for a loose connection. Since the unit is new you could call HP for advice since it is probably under warranty.

Hi,

I unwittingly downloaded a program to my computer and ran it. It turns out the program owner was masquerading as a reputable service provider, but was really all about stealing as much from his customers as possible. Somewhere in my data files is a file that starts itself up, and then installs spyware on the computer or calls out for spyware downloads. It is hidden well. My Kaspersky 2009 can't spot it. (This is the trojan-like malware part of the problem). I could use some help spotting this file, or files, and removing it.

One tactic this malware uses is that it installs unremovable files onto the computer system. I have struggled to remove some of these files with invalid file names, and it is un-do-able. This malicious software uses multiple methods to hide and corrupt the unremovable file. I have researched some of the different ways that a file can be made unremovable (invalid file names, strange file permissions, etc.), and this guy uses layered confusion to keep these files intact. A couple of months ago I backed up all my data, wiped the hard disk completely clean, reinstalled the operating system and AV, reinstalled the data, and repeatedly scanned the system with my AV and various online scanners. I found and deleted 4 or 5 viruses and I was satisfied that the system was clean.

But even though I have been very careful, this spyware has slowly crept back in, and starting a few days ago my system started to crash repeatedly. Now the system is screwe... Read more

Hmm; Normally any backup software would do this for you.

If you had a secondary copy (say other media to which you did a copy), then this would be a snap.

It sounds as if you only have the original media and you need to recover "whatever is possible".

This is an odd one. I migrated from Outlook Express to Windows Live Mail, using Windows Easy Transfer.

It transferred most things OK (aside from another problem - Live Mail imports only partially from OE .dbx file), however one thing that's wrong now is that most (though not all) of the First Name and Last Name fields in Windows Live Mail did not get migrated! The contact itself did in all cases; it's there with the email address, but now the First Name and Last Name are blank.

Can anyone help with this? Is there any way to recover them?

Thanks.

Answer:Migration to Windows Mail - lost First and Last names on most contact

Edit: I found how to edit existing contacts. Any help in how I can fix this problem, without having to manually edit all the contact, will be most appreciated.

I did find out where the old outlook express contacts are stored:

C:\Users\<user>\Contacts

in a bunch of .contact files. These files do contain the name, in the <c:FormattedName>John Doe</c:FormattedName> field, but apparently this was not imported into Live Mail properly.

A brief apology: I'm probably too old to mess with this stuff (pulling 80,) but I like to try. Please be patient with me, and ask for details if I am not stating my problem clearly. I have searched, but could not find this problem already discussed in this forum.
I just installed Windows 10. Not sure if I like it, but I'm trying hard.
Problem: When I go to File Explorer, in the left panel, when I click on a folder name, the contents of that folder (both sub-folders and files) show in the right panel.
In the left panel, when I click on ">" beside a folder name, it will expand in the left panel showing the sub-folders, but not "loose files".
I could have sworn that in earlier versions of Windows the files also showed.
Is there a option setting somewhere to change this behavior and to show the files also in the left panel?

Thanks!

I have a couple hundred mixed images of different file types. 80% of them do not have file extensions in the name. Mostly Tiff, EPS (in CMYK), PS, AI, and Jpg. I need to add in file extensions for the correct image type. So all the Tiff files without .tif at the end need .tif added. Same for EPS, AI etc. Some images DO have the extension already and I do not want those changed or an extra extension tagged onto them.

Any suggestions for software to read the file type from the image then add the correct extension if it is missing? I could do it manually but hundreds of manual renames are not my idea of a fun time. I have Vista, XP, 2K, A few Linux distro's etc available, so I can run most modern software.

Do you have "Hide Extensions for Known File Types" enabled in Windows Folder Properties by chance? Or do you just want to have the file extension in the file name?

I am running Vista Home ... when in the folder I have my videos in I can see my .avi movies from my old HP dig cam but can not view the thumbnail of the newer .mov videos from my Kodak dig cam. This bugs me. I can play them in quicktime but would love to be able to see the thumbnail preview so sorting them would be a lot faster.

I've googled this and tried several things. Nothing has worked as of yet. Maybe I am not doing something right. I download and installed VLC and 3ivx. I do not want to change any .reg afraid I might mess something up. This machine is only 1 week old.

Someone please help me I don't know what else to do or where else to look.

Answer:Can't view .mov file thumbnails

As you may know, Windows Vista doesn't natively support mov files. VLC can play them, but its decoders are built-in and completely independent of Windows. 3ivx only decodes mov files (and mp4 files and 3gp files) encoded in MPEG-4 (it won't decode mov files in any other codec); not sure about its previewing capabilities.
What you would need is a filter (sometimes called splitter) to enable Windows (and Windows Media Player and Explorer etc.) to sparse mov files. The two most popular ones are Haali's and Gabest's filters. They're not perfect (have a few bugs - notably for mp4 and 3gp files) because they're third-party software, but they work for most files.
I believe Haali's filter is bundled with QuickTime Alternative, which you can get here:
http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm
During installation it will propose to uninstall QuickTime, but that's not necessary. You can have QuickTime and QuickTime Alternative work side by side just fine.
As for Gabest's filter it's built-in Media Player Classic (also installed with QuickTime Alternative). I think you could download the filter alone somewhere in here
http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/
but I'm not sure how to install it and register it with Windows.

Why do my layered .tif files sometimes thumbnail as only one of the layers? Changing the active layers and re-saving does not help. I use Photoshop CS2 as my image editing software. When the same file is saved as a .jpg it thumbnails perfectly.

How would I go about this? I dislike having thumbnail previews of certain file types like video's. But I want my Jpgs, gifs, png's and such, basicly pictures to have Thumbnail previews still. Thats all. The only option Seven gives me is all or none.

Answer:I want to have thumbnails for only some file types...

You may use Shark007's FREE Codec solutions - Windows 7 codecs . It provides thumbnail preview turn on\off mechanism for some codecs.

Ok I'm totally at a loss on how to word this so I'm just going to write it out the best that I can...

First I have a batch file that I'm writing that will convert mp4 files to mp3 files (I have a lot) for a buddies band using ffmpeg.

Here's the code that I'm using:

ffmpeg -i folder\video.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music.mp3"

what I would like to do is add to this so that I don't have to write out this code for every file I have... :/

I have the mp4 files in one folder and than the mp3 files are saving to another folder.

So here's an example of what the code will do if it isn't clear yet.

Folder 1:

video1.mp4
video2.mp4
video3.mp4

what it should do is grab video1.mp4 and convert it.

ffmpeg -i folder\video1.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music1.mp3"

and than move onto the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video2.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music2.mp3"

and than the next one

ffmpeg -i folder\video3.mp4 -f mp3 -ab 160000 -vn "\different folder\music3.mp3"

It's going to have to grab the name from the mp4 file and insert it for the mp3 file.

I can get around pretty good in cmd if it's basic commands but when it comes to something like this I'm a little confused...

Thanks for the help in advance!
I'll see what i can do about searching some more on what I would have to do and if I find the solution I'll post it here if it isn't already answered.

Answer:Batch File that grabs file names from folder to insert into batch file

A DOS "for /f" loop should do the trick, although changing the filename extension for the output to do everything in one line escapes me at the moment.

Perhaps you could do a dir .\folder\*.mp4/s/b > mp4s.txt, then make a copy of that and edit each line to rename the file to the destination name, and save it as mp3s.txt. Then you just feed both the source (mp4s.txt) and destination (mp3s.txt) filesnames into the for /f loop which handles the ffmpeg conversion.

Quite a crude solution and you'd have to handpatch the destination filenames, but i can't think of how to get a source mp4 filename and then just change the extension.

I frequently use disc cleanup and I would like to know if there is a way to make the job easier in regards to the thumbnails file.

Is there a way to make the size of the thumbnails file smaller so these files don't accumulate as much, or even better, is there a way to have Vista purge these files automatically so I don't have to do the disc cleanup method?

Thanks.

Some of the thumbnails aren't showing up windows explorer even though they are the same file type. There will be 12 episodes of a show in .AVI or .MKV, and only 9 will have thumbnails, the other 3 don't. I have the Haali Media Splitter on to show thumbnails and I installed the Windows Service Pack to to it too (not sure which one is actually working, if I had to guess I'd say it's Haali).

To enable the thumbnails on Haali Media Splitter I click it, the went: options → explorer integration → show thumbnails (yes) → thumbnails offset (10000)

Not sure what is wrong...can anyone help?

And this is a problem with pretty much all the file types, some thumbnails showing and some not when they're in the same folder and I got them from the same source (all the files in a folder are either AVI or MKV, but the problem happens with both)

I have a movie archive. Each film and its poster image are in a different folder. So there are a lot of folders. Each folder has its image in it as thumbnail.Anyway, here is my problem:I want to copy all folder thumbnails, folder names and folder sizes to a file, for instance word, excel, image files...I know that it can performed with printscreen key, and paste a file. But, the folder window can not show all folders in a screen. Think that there are 1000 movie folders. We can see only first 30 folders of them in a screen.I need to print-screen all of them in one time, and paste it to a file.Or, get thumbnails, folder names and sizes as a list with a program. What do you offer me about it?Thanks in advance.Regards...

Answer:Copy folder thumbnails to a file

Yilmaz Ekici, never tried it so dunno for sure, but seems to me like you simply need to hilite the desired selections and 'copy to folder'. Multiple copies may take some time. What if you were to create a shortcut and put all the shortcuts in the same folder instead?HTH.Ed in Texas.

I have window 10 home.

I'm in the directory on my hard disk c:\
I can see maybe 2-3 thumbnails preview the rest are icons and i have like 400 items most of them thumbnails/images of some types: png jpg bmp.

My hard disk c: have 93.6 GB free out of 139 GB
And i tried already in the menu: View > Options > Change folder and search options > View and then unchecked Always show icons, never thumbnails. But it didn't help much.

I did new windows 10 clean install today and not yet installed new updates since there was no space on C: so i startec lean up some stuff and so far i have 93.6 GB free space. Maybe the problem is that i need first to install all the updates ?

I tried now to go drive D and same problem most of the images without preview.

Hi, I used this tutorial last year, it worked fine and then just a few months ago this happened.

Whenever I save or open a file, this is is what the pop-up menu looks like > link (the folder doesn't work too, but a while ago I restored the icons to default from the tutorial, and now it looks like this)

When I open it using windows explorer and Internet Explorer (ctrl+O) it works fine, but when I use Maxthon 3, Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome it doesn't work. So maybe the problem isn't the browser, maybe it's the computer?
I don't know what happened, it's been months since like this and it's been annoying me (because I can't choose which to upload w/o seeing the thumbnail) so I tried different solutions found in the internet that DIDN'T work:
(I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64)uninstalling then re-installing the browser
going to folder and search options > view > unchecking "Always show icons, never thumbnails"
going to control panel > all control panel items > performance information and tools > adjust visual effects > checking "show thumbnails instead of icons"
going to computer > right click hard disk > properties > disk cleanup > checking "thumbnails" > clean up system files (this kind of messed up my thumbnails more)
I tried opening command prompt then type sfc /scannow but it stopped at 20% and said "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation."

Answer:No thumbnails in open/save file

Welcome to Seven Forums Cath.

First of all I don't understand how you are opening a folder with a browser?
Press the windows logo key + Pause Break to open System Properties and follow the diagram below to "For Cath" and check "Show Thumbnails Instead of Icons".

You may need to do a repair install since sfc /scannow won't run.

Recently I downloaded a file converter which, after installation, associated all my video files with itself. Previous to downloading this programme my .avi, .mkv files etc were all displayed simply as an icon, yet now they are all displayed as a thumbnail picture. The only solution I have found for reverting my video files back to being displayed simply as an icon is via Folder Options, 'Always show icons, never thumbnails'. However, selecting this option also disables the thumbnail preview for my .jpeg and other image files. Is there any way to disable my video files being displayed with a thumbnail whilst keeping the thumbnail preview for images? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Disabling video thumbnails whilst keeping image thumbnails enabled?

Does anybody have any ideas on this please?

Hi,
I know there are some threads about this. but I couldn't solve my problem using those. so I decided to make a new thread instead of bumping the old ones.
Well, Here is my problem:
recently I installed a fresh copy of windows 8 on my PC. it was nothing wrong with it till I installed Kaspersky Endpoint Security 10 (v. 10.1.0.867) & did a reboot.
Now non of my files including picture, audio & video files show thumbnails or even tags (ex mp3 files).
I've tried the solutions stated about turning thumbnails on & off with no luck. in my folder options the option "Always show icons, never thumbnails" is UNCHECKED.

Has anybody faced the problem?? Is the issue from Kaspersky?? Are there any workarounds??

I truly Appreciate any help.

PS. I also have some difficulties pinning folders to windows explorer taskbar icon since then.

Hi

I'm not talking about PSD files here, just jpgs and other "regular" image formats. I have no problems with seeing thumbnails by default in any other software's File Open dialogs other than Photoshop (CS4 in my case). No matter what I have tried in Folder Options (yadda yadda) PS CS4 refuses to display thumbnails unless I manually choose "Icons" from the view menu once I am in the dialog. (Ideally I'd like it to automatically display Extra Large Icons.) This is driving me nuts as I work on jpg photos all day and every day. Sure I can use Bridge, but it is SO slow, or something else, but someone out there must have a fix? I can't see anything obvious in the Adobe areas of the registry and don't know enough about it to hack it myself. Grateful for any help!

I realize you can use Libraries to get thumbnails, but that's about as many clicks (or more) than File>Open>View>Ex Large thumbnails ... every single time!!

I am using Win7 x64, Photoshop CS4 x86

Hi everyone,

I have used a bunch of tutorials from this site over the last few years and never joined up. However, I am infuriated at windows 7 not letting me get my own way with custom icons! Infuriated enough to sign up.

All I wanted was a custom folders icon (for ALL folders) which can be done easy enough, but the catch 22, in order to do this properly, one must turn off thumbnails (organise > folder options > view > always show icons, never thumbnails).

This means you end up with a window with a couple of hundred identical jpeg/png/whatever icons... not very useful when you need a quick overview of contained images within the folder.

So, we turn the thumbnails back on, ah thats better, we can quickly see our images again! Oh wait, those disgusting yellow overlayed thumbnail folders are back!

There needs to be another option in windows 7:

Always show icons (folders only), show file thumbnails

Would be great but I can't find any way to achieve this. Even iconpackager can't do this and I bloody bought it! All that happens is that you end up with your nice custom icon, with a little bit of photo thumbnail sticking out the bottom of it, so you have to 'always show icons, never thumbnails'... well that was a waste of money!

I would install linux instead if it were more useful, changing ALL icons is easy and makes sense in that, and takes about 5mins! I have a lovely custom theme, of course, let down by those yellow folder icons that make me want to puke!
