Win XP command line problems

Question: Win XP command line problems

Ok, maybe I'm an idiot or this just doesn't plain work, here is what I am trying to do:

I open a new command line window and it defaults me to the root directory of my C: drive. I am trying to access my desktop at c:\documents and settings\username\desktop and when I try to cd to this directory this is what I get:

Code:
C:\>cd doc*
Invalid directory

C:\>cd Documents and Settings
Too many paramaters - and

C:\>cd Documents*
Invalid directory

WTF? I very rarely use DOS anymore, in fact this is a work laptop and I think it is time to install cygwin, at least Linux command line works Anyone have any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Win XP command line problems

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Win XP command line problems

It'll want the 8 character shortcut for filenames larger than 8 characters. The format is the first 6 characters followed by a ~1. So "Documents and settings" would be "docume~1".

Try "cd docume~1" and see what happens.

Also - cd doc* won't work in dos. The CD command doesn't accept wildcards (the * )

I want to hide this. I'm running a python progam (if that matters) and it always has that open on my taskbar. I want to hide it. I don't care where it goes or how much time it takes, I just want to hide it. So I never have to deal with it. Maybe make it a system process or something? I don't know.

What's the Windows command line syntax for this copy task?

Hello Everyone,
I am having problems with accessing the files on a folder through the command line. Whenever I enter the dir command, it displays the folders on D: drive but I really want to get to the files inside the folders on the D; drive. So, what command line should I use to access the files on the folder which is located in the D: drive? You help will be highly appreciated.

Answer:Problems With Accessing Files Via Command Line

Hi maxx247

To list the contents of a directory use: dir/w

the '/w' is for wide list format, for directory with lots of files. It allows you to see each screen, otherwise a directory with lots of files will scroll right past you!

If you know the file type you're looking for, like 'exe's use: dir *.exe where * is a wild card. Alternatively, the wild card can be used for the file type of you know the name of the file: dir hello.*

If you need help in Command Prompt type : dir /?

Hello, I'm having some problems with Winrar.
I'm using the command line to compress files into a rar, but then when I try to use the command line to decompress the same files I get a "No files to extract" error.

None of the rars is empty and the files can actually be extracted using the windows GUI, the problem is with the command line.

I'm using the following command to compress the files (with different paths):

Code:
"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\winrar.exe" a -v4400m -m5 -ag -r -ac -ao -to10m -IBCK C:\Backups\DocumentsBackup C:\Documents\*.*
And then I use this command to extract (again with different paths):

Code:
"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\winrar.exe" x -r -IBCK C:\Backups\DocumentsBackupYYYYMMDDhhmmss.rar C:\Temp
I already tried downloading the latest version of winrar but it didn't solve my problem.
I'm using Windows Server 2003 BTW.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Answer:Winrar problems - can't extract files via command line.

Nevermind, I found the problem.
The correct syntax for the extract command would be the following:

Code:
"C:\Program Files\WinRAR\winrar.exe" x -IBCK C:\Backups\DocumentsBackupYYYYMMDDhhmmss.rar *.* C:\Temp

Somehow the line that you put web sites -- after the http --has disappeared. I'm sure that there's a simple way to get it back but I'm new to WIN XP. Can someone help.

Answer:Lost command line -- line with site addresses WinXP

I think you are talking about the address bar in a web browser???

You did not mention what browser you are using. For Internet Explorer 6, right click in any other visible menu bar and then make sure that "Address Bar" is checked in the box that pops up. This may work for other versions of Internet Explorer.

Hello,

I'm trying to split a .flv file by using flvparse, which is a Windows-only, command-line interface tool. I did get through to the directory by following instructions posted on another forum, however, command prompt doesn't seem to recognize the the .exe file. I'm an absolute novice at this, any help would be really appreciated!

Attaching a CP s/s, and here are the instructions I'm trying to follow (copy pasted from the forum)

FLVPARSER

For trimming the beginning and/or ending of videos, you can use FLVParser (http://dev2.avacast.com/FLVparser.zip ).
FLVParser is a Windows-only, command-line interface tool. After you unzip it, move its folder to C:\ for ease of use. Also for ease of use, copy/move the .flv file you wish to edit into the FLVParse folder.
To make edits, you need to know the in and out points where you want the edits. Use FLVPlayer to find these points. FLVPLayer only lists times in total number of seconds, not HH:MM:SS, but don't worry, FLVParser can handle that. In the FLVParse directory create a new blank text file called: CuePointFile.dat
This is the file FLVParser uses to edit from. Open it in NotePad, and enter the in point and out point, separated by a single blank space, like so: 2525 5150
Save, and close the file. Open up the command line interface and go to the FLVParse directory: cd C:\FLVParse
In the command line, enter this to edit the flv:
flvparse.exe FileToSplit.flv CuePointFile.dat
Your file will be split into ... Read more

Answer:Command Prompt doesnt seem to recognize the command line!!

You are using the basic cmd, try in elevated mode
Elevated Command Prompt - Windows 7 Forums

However looking at you screen shot, you may have to check the command over carefully. There does appear to be an error in the command. With my eyes, it is difficult at times to pick out the subtle shades of difference.

Hi everyone, what is the commmand for command prompt to stop a process? What i would like to do is make a shortcut to stop the KBD.exe process. The reason for that is when someone in my family puts a disk in, plays a game, and sometimes when they take the disk out it complains about there being no disk in the drive. The only way to shut it up is to end the process in the task manager and click cancel on the window. This way is a little to complicated for some of the memebers of my family and i would like to be able to just create a shortcut for it.

Click on Start, then run
type in cmd to get to command prompt
type in taskkill /f kbd.exe

The forward slash /f forces it to kill the process.

I have created a manuals package. The package has a main file that everything else is linked to. I can create a self extracting exe program from pkzip application. What I don't know how to do is have the program create a shortcut to the main file from this program. If it is not possible to do this with pkzip then what application will do this.i.e. I want to have something say "Would you like to create a shortcut to Manuals or your desktop?" in the or any file extraction application.Thank youRJT

Answer:How to create self extracting command line command

You can create a WinScript file (.vbs extension)Example:set WshShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell")         strDesktop = WshShell.SpecialFolders("Desktop")         set oShellLink = WshShell.CreateShortcut(strDesktop & "\Shortcut Script.lnk")         oShellLink.TargetPath = WScript.ScriptFullName         oShellLink.WindowStyle = 1         oShellLink.Hotkey = "CTRL+SHIFT+F"         oShellLink.IconLocation = "notepad.exe, 0"         oShellLink.Description = "Shortcut Script"         oShellLink.WorkingDirectory = strDesktop         oShellLink.SaveYou'll have to change the parameters for your own situation. Good Luck!

The first one simply turns Hibernation off, disables Fast Startup, and deletes the system file hiberfil.sys. I'm not aware of connection with Sleep or waking up on a trigger. I have these settings, as stated, on my machine, and I can still put it to sleep and wake it up. I'm not familiar with the last four at all, although sleep states are usually (I think) set in the BIOS. Whatever is set there is available in the OS. S0-S4, I think. Maybe S5.

A little more info here: NO Hibernation just SLEEP

Also, you might want to check your advanced power plan settings to see if you have enabled wake timers.

I need some help, but probably don't have a full grasp on the problem, so don't really know how to ask for help. I will describe what I have and hopefully, it will help to describe what I want to accomplish.

I have a Linksys router with DD-WRT installed. I am able to SSH/Telnet into the router. I would like to be able to reboot or shutdown my computer remotely from the command line during a Putty/SSH session.

Here is how I make the session connection: In Putty, I enter
the static IP address and port (default is 22) under "Session".
Under "SSH > Tunnels" I enter the "source port" (again, 22)
and "Destination" (ex - 192.168.0.5:3389), then hit "Add", then "Open"

This opens a command line, where I enter "user" and "pwd"
(the defaults are root and admin). I am now connected to my
router and I can use Remote Desktop to get control over my
remote computer (using XP Pro).

My question is: While at the command prompt, is there a
command to reboot or shutdown my remote computer? Is there a list
of other commands that are available here?

BTW, at the command prompt, I can start my remote computer (Wake on LAN) by typing the following command:
/usr/sbin/wol -i 192.168.0.5 MA:CAD:RE:SS:44
(where the last portion is the MAC address)

I want to create a setup whereas a command line command can be run from any directory/folder, without having to be in the directory/folder whereas the command line command resides ?

Answer:Executing command line command anywhere ?

Add the directory the cmd or bat files resides in to the PATH environment variable.

Quote:
To check or modify the system PATH environment variable, do the following:

XP: Right clock on My Computer
Vista, 7: Right click on Computer
Windows 8, 10: Right click on This PC

Select Properties

Vista, 7, 8, 10: Click on Advanced System Properties on the left

On the Advanced tab, click on Environment Variables
Under System Variables, scroll down to Path
Select it then click Edit

An easy way to look at all of it is to right click on the highlighted Variable Value field and select copy, then start Notepad and paste the data into there. That way you can easily look at all of it.

It's also a lot easier to make changes in Notepad then copy and paste the changed data back into the Path Variable Value field.

Click Ok as needed to exit when done

Good stuff, but then there's something wrong with his verbatim copy of a directory... You should add the p option to the tar extraction command, in order to preserve file attributes (ctime, mtime, atime, owner, group) - ie, tar xpvf and not tar xvf.

Question: Command Line

Do any of you guys know how to restart a network card? (disable/enable) from the command line in windows (particularly windows server 2003). I want to create a batch script to restart this if the server can't connect to something on the internet after a certain time period.

I'm having a problem with a network card just stopping to respond for some reason and the only way I can get it to work again is to restart it that way unless i want to restart the whole server. I had this problem with another server as well. About all I can think of is either the switch is malfunctioning or i'm screwing up some sort of dns issue.

I was given a laptop to try an repair. None of the applications would open, it either asked how you want to open it or say no application found. After several tries I was able to do a virus scan. Couple Trojans and virus. Still no change in laptop. I googled the question and found someone asking a question with similar problem & was told to download this scan. I figured I had nothing to lose the laptop wasn't working so I outsmarted the virus & downloaded the program... After downloading, it needed to reboot. but before I allowed it to reboot I noticed the applications suddenly working... Rebooted & scanned. Its came up with 4 Trojans, 4 viruses & over 200 accounts of spyware. To remove them was $40 with $30 mail in rebate... My friend suggested that what I had downloaded was one of those scams that give you the Trojan & make you think they are getting rid of it for a price. They suggested I do a killdisk to wipe out the HDD and reinstall the OS.
Killdisk worked, it says I need to do a FDISK & FORMAT before I can download the new OS. I can't figure out how to do that. I get a blank black screen with a curser but it won't take any code. I have tried downloading the OS (windows XP) and it says it can't find any hard disk drives.

What am I doing wrong?

I recently installed new software that requires adding a command line to allow the software to restart and configure itself at start up. The manufacturer, who hasn't responded to my e-mail gives instructions to automatically load this software already configured by using the "command line". I'm using XP Pro. I believe that it's the last line below that needs to be loaded but my question is how do I so this. Here are the manufacturers instructions.
Usage:
VSPEmulator.exe <config file path> <options>
Config file is a special file with extension ".vspe" that can be created using VSPE "Save as..." command.
Options are additional parameters that can be passed to VSPE to manage its basic behavior.
-minimize : minimize VSPE dialog
-hide_splash : do not show splash window
Example:

Execute VSPE and automatically load configuration file
VSPEmulator.exe c:/config_files/main.vspe

Execute, load configuration file, hide splash and minimize VSPE
VSPEmulator.exe c:/config_files/main.vspe -minimize -hide_splash

Not that I'm aware of, but if you click the start orb, type "cmd" (without quotes) then right-click "cmd.exe" in the search results, you can then select "Run as Administrator" (but you already knew that...)

Hi,

I would like to know what is the command for delete files and shortcuts on current user desktop.

Is it del C:\documents and settings\*\local settings\desktop\popup blocker stops popups.lnk?

Using winxp pro. I know it is easlier to use windows explorer but I am doing this for interest.

Thank you.

Answer:Need some help on command line pls.

You are roughly right. When you open the DOS box, it will automatically be logged on the current user's account: C:\Documents and Settings\Account Name\

from there, change to the folder where the file or shortcut is located (for example, type CD Desktop, then press [ENTER]. Then type DEL (name of file or shorcut) and press [ENTER]

For stubborn files which won't delete while Windows is running, open the DOS box then end the EXPLORER.EXE process which quits the Windows shell but leaves the DOS box open for you to issue the DEL command on the stubborn file. When done, bring up the task-manager again (CTRL-ALT-DEL), log-off then log-on to restart the Windows shell.

Question: DOS Command Line

Hi there-

Just reorganising my Library and for reasons I won't bore you with, need to do some mass amendments to Filenames to get rid of extraneous Info as I'm tight on Space.

So, for instance, I have a Folder (DIRectory) with one hundred PDF, Mobi, RAR, ZIP, CBR and CBZ files in it all with filenames in the following format :-

Henry Rider Haggard (Victorian Novelist, Africa Hand) [Title of Short Story/Novel/Graphic Novel].???

As :-

a) I do happen to know who H Rider Haggard is (having read my first book of his 55 years ago when I was Ten)
b) All the Files are going to go into a Directory (Folder) Entitled "Henry Rider Haggard" (in case I suddenly get struck down with Oldtimer's disease)

then I want to get rid of the words "Henry Rider Haggard (Victorian Novelist, Africa Hand)" which is common to every Filename.

My latest attempt at a Command Line blanket change from within the Folder (Directory) was the DOS command -

REN "Henry Rider Haggard (Victorian Novelist, Africa Hand)"*.??? *.???

I have also tried :-

Using the different extensions (.CBR .ZIP .RAR etc ) to change them 20 or 30 at a time
Using the same Format but *.* instead of *.???
Using no Inverted Commas on the part of the Description that I want to get rid of

Yes, I DO realise that in the time I have spent fiddling about with Command Line and composing this Post I COULD have done the whole thing Manually, BUT I have Sixty Five separate Authors to create Directories (Folders)... Read more

Answer:DOS Command Line

There is no such thing as Dos. Dos went the way of the Dodo bird, after 98 died. You have a Command window, that you can do certain things in. But what you are wanting to do, I am lost. It sounds like you are telling a story, not asking a question.

If you want to change a file name, you do it from Explorer in the Desktop. If you want to edit a file, you do it from what ever program was used to create the file.

Question: AOL Command Line?

Foolishly signed up for AOL broadband (out of sheer laziness, I really should have known better!) and have found their online help to be a bit hazy in the area of commandline/batch commands.

What I want to be able to do is exit AOL, confirm my exit, exit AOL communicator (the nearest thing to POP3 that AOL offer) and shut down a few other programs I use all at once by means of a batch file.

Any ideas whether this is doable (the batch side of things I'm happy with, just the AOL command line stuff I'm not sure on).

Thanks guys.

Question: command line

Dear TS,

Currently I am working in access, fine tuning a little database.
In this little proggie I have made a button that directly links to a .bat-file that does nothing but open the folder H:/foto (Dutch)

In that folder are several kinds of criminal offenses.

It works like this for the user:

They click the photo-button, the folder opens and they will find by manual search the picture corresponding to the crime report. the pictures in that folder are ordered in sub-categories for a clear view.

What I'd d like to achieve is that the security-officials ONLY type something like "stepped on no-stepping-on-grass-sign" in a text bar and that they then click the photo-button and the H:/foto/stepped on no-stepping-on-grass-sign folder opens.

I know the idea of typing (part of a) directory and then press a button is just as lame as just viewing a folder that has only 25 sub folders anyway, but it's just what the security-officials want...

Thank you very much for your attention and help,

sincerely,

Meneer Geerts.

Question: DEL command line

If I have created a new folder on my C: file and named it: "Odd Bods" for example.

Using the DEL Command Prompt in XP, what is the exact syntax to forcibly delete it?

I have tried by opening the Command Prompt and typing in "CD \" then enter to bring up the cursor "C:\>". Then I have typed: "Del /F Odd Bods" and "enter". The message then comes up; "Are you sure? y/n". I then type: "y" and enter, but the folder is not deleted.

Help!

Answer:DEL command line

If folder is on desktop:

Start
Run
Enter 'cmd /k' (no quotes)
Enter 'cd\' (will get you the C:\ prompt)
Enter 'cd\Documents and Settings\{your user name}\Desktop'
Enter 'dir /w'

If you can see the item, Enter 'erase [filename]'

del [filename] also works - for a directory (maybe folders too) RD [directory] works

edit: if you do the Start, run, cmd /k thing then type 'help' you'll get a list of the limited MSDOS commands remaining in the poor excuse for DOS XP supports.

For details on those, type, for example, 'help del' and you'll get the possible options.

Hi Guy's and Girls,

Just first off I've never been too good with CMD and only an Apprentice in my company I work for.

Now something I've wanted to do for awhile was to make the following but I don't necassirealy I know how to do this in one batch file:

I would need a Batch file that is able to read the follow;
Find Current Hard Drive Space and What is used (Dir can do this as far as im aware)
Convert the CMD information Into either a Excel Document or a .txt format.

If anyone could lend me a hand with this that would be great.

P.S the drives I want to make a log of are Server Destinations so i can monitor their disk space daily.

Answer:Command Line - Help

I don't know if this might help. I have a command line program that gives the free space in B KB MB GB using the largest appropriate. It's df.exe for disk free

[C:\Program Files\JPSoft\TCCLE13x64]df /?

df.exe 1.0.9.1 Copyright 2014 favessoft.com

Usage: df [ C D \\Name\Share ]
free disk space in one of B KB MB GB

( Truncated to 3 decimal places. )

example:
[C:\Program Files\JPSoft\TCCLE13x64]df c
383.848 GB Free on c:

If you would like to try it, it is free and may be downloaded from my page here:
Miles Ahead Software

Edit: you can use command line redirection to output to a file.
For example to append the result to test.txt you can do
df c: >>test.txt

Edit2: You may specify more than one drive on the line.
Example:
[C:\Program Files\JPSoft\TCCLE13x64]df c e
383.848 GB Free on c:
65.669 GB Free on e:

also: does win xp keep a log of ftp transfers done by the built-in ftp command line utility?

Thanks much!

Question: Command Line Help

Hey, can anyone help me. I am trying to make a File using CMD edit which could dump all the tasks running. I can?t figure the code; I got "tasklist" part but then....
So I am a little lost, :dead: well actually I have no idea what I am doing . And while you are at it, can someone recommend me a program which has all the command lines and what they do. Or even those "click a command" programs (if there is one). Thanks.

(for the :suspiciou "why do I want it" folks, well I would copy the file on my USB disk drive, take it to the cafe down below and see which programs they are running - there is this program which, when I type "Patch" in the internet explorer shuts it down and so I am not able to download all those Quake, Farcry, Doom, Painkiller, Halflife and etc. patches which improve performance and add a little more game play. Then I would make another file which would shutdown those processes. Hope I am not confusing you guys.)

Answer:Command Line Help

Easiest way I can think of is to use
tasklist > "directory you want file in"\tasklist.txt
But I'm not sure I understand what you're asking for here. Perhaps you can try to clarify a bit?

Hi,
Not sure if this is the right place to post this but I wanted to ask a tricky question.

I want to be able to access another PC via telnet (this I can do easily via RADMIN software) which gives the the CMD prompt access.

I then want to be able to launch a Sound file (or similiar) so that the user on the other end just hears whatever sound I have triggered (i.e. it doesn't have to launch WMP or similiar software).

Any ideas on how to do this?

I know it can be done as a clever guy I used to work with set it up and it was quite comical in the office when he was able to trigger cow noises, etc from anyone's PC by remoting in via the backend.

Cheers

Dave

Answer:run exe via command line

I don't know the answer, I just want to subscribe in case someone else does !

I suppose if you could figure out how the default Windows sounds are triggered you could find the command line to run them.

I've been messing around with the ftp program in Windows XP's command prompt, and I've got something odd happening.

I uploaded a copy of AVG to my own website so I wouldn't have to hunt for it and so I could use this ftp program to download it. After giving the "get" command with the file name, the file downloads. But when it's done...if I go to run it, a new command prompt window opens for a split second, shows nothing, and disappears. This has happened on two different PCs now.

If I use a web browser to download the files, it works. I'm not sure what to make out of this. Could I be doing something wrong?

Hi Alvin,

First, if you aren't prompted for where to download files, see the following article to make sure that happens: Not Prompted to Specify Download Folder for File.

Second, if you are prompted but don't like where it selects and want it to be a different location (like the folder on your desktop), check out the following article: How to change the default download directory for Internet Explorer | Windows Reference.

There is a small batch file I would like to execute. I have cut and pasted it from another source.
The batch file failed repeatedly.

Then I attempted to run the statements individually at the command prompt.
Things still failed.

Example:

reg load HKLM\MY_SYSTEM followed by a command in " " marks needs my machine name which is msi64-PC. The machine description is msi64.

But the statement bombs and says pretty much it can't find any part of the statement that is correct.

I can copy out the exact error if needed. But the problem seems to be I'm not pointing at the right thing in the first place or there is a directory conflict.

The sequence is

reg load MY_SYSTEM followed by " a command statement to "0Windows\System32\config\system" in quotes

reg delete followed by what to delete

reg unload which is MY_SYSTEM (to get out of the command)

All of these fail.

I should be able to run the load command at least with no argument from Win7

that statement from the sample looks like this:

reg load HKLM\MY_SYSTEM "%~dp0 (zero)Windows\System32\config\system"

I can add the error at a follow up

you will need to be in the directory for the application, and the application itself will have to support the switches. Once you are in the directory you can type the program name and then /? to see a list of the switches associated with that program.

I'm wondering if anyone here would have a bit of experience parsing commandline variables. My dilemma is this:

I'm building a custom context menu to copy files (or folders) from one location to another. Now it's working pretty well, with the exception that if I highlight a folder and run xcopy on that folder, it simply copies the files within that folder to the destination as opposed to creating the folder there and placing the files inside of it.

My command for this looks like:

cmd /c xcopy /e "%1" \\server\share\

Now the thing I thought about was maybe attempting to do this with a batch file. Run say, copy-site.bat which creates the remote directory then copies the files to it. But this doesn't go over well since %1 is the full pathname (i.e. C:\Documents and Settings\User\test) to the location as opposed to relative (test).

Now I have been able to do an alternative here, by adding a shortcut into the "Send To" location, which makes this a lot easier since it's integrated into Windows and doesn't have this shortfall--but I'd much rather have it directly on the context menu as opposed to in Send To.

Anyone know of any alternative ways to do this without having to have some program loaded 24/7?

Answer:Windows Command Line

if you want to create the folder structure with xcopy, use the /T switch and see if that works.

Also, I would map to the unc path first and then do the xcopy. Like this

net use x: \\server\share
cd x:
xcopy /E /T "%1" .\
net use /D x:

You can put that in a .cmd file and still call it with cmd /c filename.cmd I belive...

Hope this helps!!!

I am using Visual C++ 2010 Express. My main program starts

int APIENTRY _tWinMain(HINSTANCE hInstance,
HINSTANCE hPrevInstance,
LPTSTR lpCmdLine,
int nCmdShow)

I want to be able to set some parameters on the command line when the program is executed, probably from a shortcut with the appropriate values set there.
However, when I look at the last two items nCmdShow is 1, and lpCmdLine is blank.
I have tried using GetCommandLine and that has also returned a blank string.

I have tried adding a parameter to the properties of the shortcut but this has made no difference.
Am I missing something?

Answer:Command line parameters in C++

I'm not a C++ programmer, but my understanding is you need to have a main() function declared which holds to parameters: the number of command line arguments and an array of their values.

It's got some buttons on it as shortcuts to info pages.
The url is something like:
http://server/cgi_bin/abc.pl?id=1&name=mike

When the button is clicked, it launches IE via the command line, with the right page.

This works fine in Win95, but in Win NT & 2000 the url gets chopped off at the &

The command I'm using is:

As I say, fine in Win98, just NT & 2000, same problem if you type the command at the command prompt.

Answer:Ampersands on command line

To get ampersands to work properly on the command line in Win2k/XP, you need to put quotes around either just the ampersand, or everything from the ampersand on.

For example:

start http://server/cgi_bin/abc.pl?id=1"&"name=mike

-or-

start http://server/cgi_bin/abc.pl?id=1"&name=mike"

In lavasoft's documentation it shows how to run an install and scan through a command line. See next:

C:\Lavasoft\Ad-aware\Ad-Aware.EXE "C:\My documents" +L:"C:Logs\" +a +1 +R:"C:\testreflist.ref" +S +P:"D:\safeprefs.ini"

This example will load Ad-aware from C:\Lavasoft\Ad-aware\Ad-Aware.EXE, scans C:\My documents in silent, full automated-mode, using indepth scan, using the following reference file : C:\testreflist.ref , loading a particular preferencefile from D:\safeprefs.ini.

This works great. However, each time I run it the only thing it does is, scan the files, I cannot see it doing a deepscan of the registry and the active processes.

Here is the command I am running:
C:\cleanup\Ad-Aware.EXE "C:\Documents and Settings" +L:"C:\cleanup\" +a +1 +R:"C:\cleanup\reflist.ref" +S +P:"c:\cleanup\prefs.ini"

I have tried it a million ways, went into lavasoft gui and set all of the preferences, process, registry, auto clean, etc. then copied that pref file over to my command line install, it still does not work.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Moe

Answer:AD-Aware Command Line

The free one Ad-aware 6.0. It all appears to work fine except for not running the registry and process scan.

Thanks.

i picked up instructions from http://www.dimensional.com/~sitaram/...ows-users.html on how to burn a cd from the command line using xp. I ran through the instructions just fine but when i got a directory listing from the final cd, the old data that should have been erased was still there. I tried to erase the data again but it still did not erase, see attached gif.

Answer:burn cd from command line xp

If that's a CD-RW just try a CD-R

When I moved into XP from my computer I really didn't like Documents and Settings XP uses, so I created a My Documents in my root directory, similar to what Win98SE uses.

Nowadays I'm running some software that needs the Command line as a equivalent to DOS, and I ran into an odd problem.

My Documents folder seems to be invisible to the Command line. I could not enter the folder using the Command line at all. I solved the problem by renaming the folder to Bills Documents, but it is kinda odd.

Is there an attribute I'm missing somewhere? Thanks.

Answer:XP Command Line and My Documents

In both My Documents and Bills Documents did the folder name contain a "space"? Did you try the shortened version like mydocu~1 or maybe "my documents"?

You can use the sc.exe command to start, stop, configure, and manage various aspects of services in the same way that you can on earlier versions of Windows. On Windows Vista, however, the sc.exe command has been enhanced with new command-line switches.
New switches for specifying required privileges for a service include: -privs Sets the required privileges for a service. -qprivs Queries for the required privileges of a service.
New switches that support per-service SIDs include: -sidtype Changes a service?s SID. -qsidtype Retrieves the setting for service?s SID.
New switches to enable configuration of the FailureActionsOnNonCrashFailures setting include: -failureflag Changes the setting of the FailureActionsOnNonCrashFailures flag. -qfailureflag Retrieves the setting for the FailureActionsOnNonCrashFailures flag. -showsid Displays the service SID string corresponding to an arbitrary name. -stop This is an old setting that has been enhanced in Windows Vista to specify the stop reason. This enables postmortem reliability analysis to find out reasons (by examining the event logged by the SCM with the stop reason) an administrator would stop a service.
For more information about these new command-line switches for sc.exe, type sc /? at a command prompt.

A few weeks ago I tried to download the new msn messenger and it couldn't be installed, it said corrupted file. I chose to ignore it cause it was just msn, then two days ago I was installing photoshop and the same thing. So I did a system recovery, thinking it was just that my computer was too full of junk, and when I rebooted, I tried re-installing firefox, msn, abc, and it says various message for some it says: low disk space (for file swapping) or a damaged cabinet file, and for others it says :

NSIS Error

The installer you are trying to use is corrupted or incomplete
this could be the result of a damaged disk, a failed download or a virus

You may want to contact the author to obtain another copy

It may be possible to skip this check using the /ncrc command line switch

It's not a virus, cause I ran norton and nothing came up..can anyone help me with this???

Answer:Can't seem to install anything..command line

Hi seansmythe and welcome to TSF !

What's your hard drive brand and model ? If you have no idea you can go to the device manager (start => run => devmgmt.msc), expand disk drives and tell us the exact model ID you'll see.

Do you have the XP CD ?

Check the event viewer : start => run => eventvwr.msc. Search the different sections there. Report the recent errors and warnings with the name of the source, the event # and the text under description when you double-click the error (you'll have to highlight the text and use ctrl+c/ctrl+v to copy/paste it since right-click doesn't work there).

Could you post your system specs ? Check the link in my sig. If this is a laptop brand and model will do. If this is a desktop we'll need the infos about your power supply. Open the case and tell us what you see on the sticker that's on the side of the power supply block : brand, model, total wattage and amperage on each rail.

Does anyone know where I could find a list of the command line parameters for QuickTime 5 when invoked from NT's command prompt? Does QuickTime even support command line parameters?

I have a large number of small files that I would like to export to another format, and it would be easier if I could batch process them with a Windows Script.

I have tried using other conversion programs, and nothing works as well as QuickTme's internal exporter.

Dear fellow geeks,

I would like to ask your opinion; if there was a tutorial
series, that teaches command line for say, SOHO or small
business owners, or students, or administrators, or IT interns; if it was
provided on dvd, along with manuals, and plenty of illustrations,
examples, and breakdowns completely explaining every switch,
option,
variable, statement, condition, etc along with website support;
and loadable files to use as examples to study on, what would you
think of it along with the pros and cons?

Please dont get me wrong; Its just that ive read several manuals on the
subject, and theyre so technical, and cryptic, its easy to struggle. Lucky for me, ive
become good at understanding this subject.
I simply believe that I can do a better job of explaining command line concepts, and batch
scripting so that the average person can really understand. For example, are you familiar
with the "video professor" series that uses a very user friendly approach to teaching?
The illustrations are presented with pre selected mouse movements on the screen that show
you exactly where to move your mouse, and click, step by step. Though command line is mouse,
and GUI free, I think something similar to showing each command typed, and entered with
results presented, and explained (before the student types in anything, just like the
"video professor" series) would go a long way to helping the student understand. I would
present thi... Read more

Personally I don't think you'd find much interest in this. Usually the only people who want to touch command line are the more advanced users. The ones who arn't so good just stick with the GUI.

Of course when it comes to windows the help provided for average commands in 2000/XP is pretty good already. They even include sample usuage. For example if you look up the taskkill command you'll see it includes this

Examples:
TASKKILL /S system /F /IM notepad.exe /T
TASKKILL /PID 1230 /PID 1241 /PID 1253 /T
TASKKILL /F /IM notepad.exe /IM mspaint.exe
TASKKILL /F /FI "PID ge 1000" /FI "WINDOWTITLE ne untitle*"
TASKKILL /F /FI "USERNAME eq NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM" /IM notepad.exe
TASKKILL /S system /U domain\username /FI "USERNAME ne NT*" /IM *
TASKKILL /S system /U username /P password /FI "IMAGENAME eq note*"

It also explains it all above. It's really as clear as it gets for command line stuff.

Now if you meant linux command line, then maybe that would be nice. I find the manuals for linux command lines to almost always be lacking in detail. Of course after using linux awhile you just get used to it and you're OK. And since linux/unix isn't something normal users really play around with much, I yet again wouldn't see much use for it.

Even if you did a good job with it, very few linux/unix users would ever be bothered to read/use it. They all just u... Read more

I've created a batch file for zipping selected items in a folder.
(The file is placed in 'Send to').
If I use the following code:
for %%* in (.) do set CurrentFolder=%%~n* "C:\Program Files\WinRar\WinRar" a -afzip "%CurrentFolder%.xpi"
The file name is that of the current folder (correct).
All files are archived whether I select one file or multiple files (wrong).
Selected folders are not archived (wrong).
If I use the following code:
set file=%~f1 "C:\Program Files\WinRar\WinRar" a -afzip "%file:~0,-4%.xpi" "%1"
The file name is that of the file on which I right click (correct).
Only that file is archived even if multiple files are selected (wrong).

How can I know if a single item is selected or more?
What's the condition syntax?
How can I include folders in the archive?
Thank you.

I need to work with xcopy to resolve a crc error with an Outlook Express file. Unfortunately when I type the following:

cd Documents and Settings I receive the following response:

Too many parameters - Documents

I cannot copy the file in question in Windows so I am using the Dos commands.

Any ideas?

Any good freeware crc error fixer apps out there?

Thanks for any help and/or wisdom

How can I set this via command-line or registry? I need a way to automatically launch "Explorer c:\folder\myfolder" with a view appropriate for long filenames on any Windows Vista/Win7 PC.

Answer:How can I set this via command-line or registry?

Type c:\windows\explorer.exe X:\folder\subfolder /e on Notepad, save as a batch file with .bat extension. Copy file to C:\Users\Your_Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup to open X:\Folder\Subfolder in Explorer in Details view every time you log in to your user account, or to C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp if you want this to happen on all user accounts.

I'm looking for a native x64 command line tool that can display the amount of free RAM. It has to be a true x64 tool. Does anyone know one? My google searches brought up nothing.

Edit: I finally found what I was looking for. RamStatus is the tool that helped me out.
