Server Essentials 2012 Remote Access HELP

Question: Server Essentials 2012 Remote Access HELP

I've reached the end of my limited networking knowledge. Here's the deal:

- I have my home server running Windows Server Essentials 2012. Its primary function is backups of my various computers.
- My ISP is ATT Uverse, which provides a modem/router/gateway. It sucks teh ballz, so I set into bridge mode and set up a Netgear Nighthawk behind it. ALL devices are connected to the Nighthawk.
- I want to set up the server for remote access so that family can grab pictures and files remotely, and so I can do the same.
- I followed the instructions and the auto setup (I had to forward ports 80 and 443 manually, but that's done), and from the server's perspective, it says it is set up:

And now the problem:
When I try to access the sever from INSIDE the network, it loads the login page no problem. BUT, when I do so from the outside, the server sends no data, nothing loads.
Am I missing a setting on the bridged gateway?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hey Guys

I'm looking at a Server 2012 Standard installation and I have a question about remote access.

In the old SBS and the new Essentials, there's a default landing page that is configured that you can bind to a remote.yourdomain.com address so that people can access email, remote desktop, and other webapps. Is there anything like this for the Standard version? Most of what I've seen has been about Direct Access that works on Win8 machines already joined to the domain, which doesn't help me at all.

So TLDR:
Does 2012 Standard come with an easy to setup remote access web page?

Answer:Server 2012 Standard Remote Access

Found that installing the Remote Desktop Services roll with a session based deployment will host the web page I was looking for. Unfortunately, it won't run on a server that is running AD DC. This issue looks to be fixed in R2 but I don't have that. I'm now following best practices and installing a second 2012 vm to host the Remote Desktop rolls.

My school gives us server 2012 standard for free. I am wondering if it's possible to install it as 2012 essentials with the same features as essentials kind of like how win pro had every thing home had. Or are the features of server essentials not included in standard? (Features like full pc back up and the dashboard like whs 2011)

Answer:can you setup server 2012 standard as 2012 essentials?

Different media for the install, Server Standard and Datacenter use the same media. Essentials has it's own install disk and Foundation and Storage Server share the same media.

Has anyone else gotten this combo to work?

Whenever I try to install WSE2012 through UEFI/BIOS it fails. The computer reboots before I even get into the setup GUI. So far, I have only been able to boot into DOS.

I've removed all PCIE cards, unplugged hard drives, and updated the BIOS to the latest version.

I verified the chksum of the WSE2012 against Technet so i know my download is good.

I burned the ISO to DVD & Flash drive.

Any ideas?

So, I am trying to setup Windows Server 2012 Essentials. I have it installed, and it boots to the dashboard, and starts the"Set Up Windows Server 2012 Essentials" dialog, it leads to "Error occurred during Installation" and says to reboot, or save logs, I have a copy of the logs files, if anyone would like them.

Clients should be getting the DNS from the server, especially if you want clients to connect/use the server, especially for logons, policies, etc.
Im guessing the .254.254 is a uverse/att device?
Turn off the DHCP on the .254 device *or* add your current router into the DMZ type zone
Server should be sending out DHCP info
192.168.1.4 as DNS
192.168.254.254 as gateway (or is you can do the DMZ mode use 192.168.1.1)
255.255.255.0 as subnet

I'm trying to help a friend to get their Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup up in their small business.

Server is operational, but I'm having issues connecting PCs to it...

I'm able to get to the server page by going to http://(servername)\connect
I can download the connector software, when I run it it finds the server it ask for user name and password.

After entering info it tries to connect for 20-60 seconds and fails with:

Cannot coonect this computer to the network
The Server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see troubleshooting connecting computers to the server.

any idea what could be causing?

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as "gateway.pace.com"

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.
All PCs are connected to the network with an IP phone as a device in the middle, that seems be slowing down the phones from normal gigabit to 10/100 only.

Any help would be grateful.

I don't do these posts (Hey look at me, I'm awesome!!!), but this one needed to be made...
I am a graduate of both WHS v1 and 2011. I liked both, missed drive extender, and loathed my ATT Gateway as a result. That said, they always backed up on time, and the way I wanted, with no issues (until Drive Bender decided to bork everything and my Windows 8 laptop refused to play nice with WHS2011).

Well, my server needed an upgrade anyway, so I decided to gut it (mostly) and start over with the new Server Essentials 2012. (SE2012 from here on)

Old Specs: Core 2 Duo E4400, 2gb DDR2, Some s775 Asus board, and a 9800GT PE + a 2TB WD Green.

New Specs: AMD A6-3650, 4GB DDR3, an MSI A55m-P33, an Intel 120gb SSD for the OS, and I added two more WD Green 2TB drives (total 6tb).

I cannot emphasize it enough how easy the setup was. Drivers installed with no issues, straight from the mobo disk, and then updated through windows update. Unlike with my two WHS installs, I didn't have to trick them into thinking it wasn't a server OS etc. Getting DriveBender back in the form of storage pools was awesome, and again, set up with no issues whatsoever including built in duplication. The entire process, hardware switch included, took MAYBE 2 hours. That includes setting up a domain on the network with SE2012.

So, compared to my previous server OS experience, I also like the new dashboard. It's a bit easier to work with and makes a little more sense, though some of the dire... Read more

I have a Windows Server 2012 Essentials Server with Dell Perc 200 raid controller.
All generally works very well. But i have noticed if i copy files from one location to another location on the same hdd, the transfer rate starts reasonable and drops right down to 1-2mb / sec... or less... and sometimes goes to kb/sec and then sometimes drops to 0...
Any ideas or suggestions are welcomed?? Is it windows settings, the raid controller etc???

I don't know if this is buried here on HOCP or not, but here it is just in case.

There is an article on SuperSite that explains how to add a computer to a Server 2012 Essentials machine (i.e. install the connector software) without it taking over the workstation and adding it to the domain.

Article...

Hopefully MS won't put some sort of bullshit block in for this in the final RTM.

Nice to know. Might allow more people to use it w/o worrying about domain administration.

Also, I earlier posted a link to a reported work-around for the connector software forcing workstations on the Domain.

Ok, so after a long time working fine, my desktops stopped backing up.

So, as recommended by the TN Article for Client Backup issues, I started the Database Repair Utility in the Dashboard.

It starts, and after a while it fails and says it fails due to an unknown problem. I click the link it provides to find help, and it dumps me in the generic Server2012E page. I've not been able to find any help on this issue.

Any idea's ?

I also ran a SFT /Scannow on the server. The last time I had a client backup issue this fixed it.

Exact Error Wording:

Backup repair did not complete.
An unknown error prevented the backup repair process from starting. Make sure that all services are running then try again.

The services I know to check are indeed running.

what do you mean by "added my computer into the server" as it's not clear what you did.
and clarify "there is no user found on the permission for drop box"
it should list local accounts and possibly the SID of a deleted domain user (if you mean you added your computer to the domain that Server 2012 Essentials creates)

We have an important LOB application (QuickBooks 2018) that requires that requires Internet Explorer 11 for QB to operate correctly.  Unfortunately our server runs Windows Server 2012 Essentials as an operating system (not R2).  From reviewing
various Microsoft documents, I realize that IE 11 is not supported on Server 2012.  However, we need to be able to run QuickBooks, which requires that version of IE.  Upgrading the server OS to 2012 R2 would take hours, because there is no in-place
upgrade option.  We would have to reinstall and configure the OS again from scratch.
Is there anything we can do to resolve this problem?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Hi,

I am playing around with Server 2012. If I want to have a laptop configured for "at office use" with option to go on site, what would be the best way to do that in order to retain access to shared locations on server that is "at office"?

Should I create a standard windows account unrelated to my domain controller, and have them VPN regardless if they are in office or on site? Or is there a way to have a laptop configured for domain use, where it will still be functional (local computer use) on site outside of the office, even without internet connection (I know you can's VPN without it).

Thanks

Answer:Best way to set up local and remote user with Server 2012

Well this is kind of interesting. You can in fact use a domain laptop away from the local network as long as you have logged into int once on the domain so it can cache your password for future log ins. Now comes to the more difficult part of your question's. Accessing files remotely while not online, you can set up what is called offline files. Offline files will give you acess to your files away from domain network. So if you choose to do offline files any changes made to the file while away from the domain controller where you shares are set up will have to be synced once back on the domain network. So if you make changes to lets say docA while off domain network, once you get back to domain network you will have to sync offline files to the server to update any changes you have made. This set up would not require offsite network but can bring problems when syncing once you reconnect on domain. But now lets say you have the same shares and now you have multiple individials with the same access to the shares. Say you make changes to docA and the other person makes changes to docA while offiste. Once you both reconnect and sync to server you could have issues with data such as duplicate information or doc merging. VPN would be the best option for sure....

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with setting up Remote Computer Management in Server 2012.

My setup is as follows:
2 identical physical hosts (1 Hyper-V Server 2012 and 1 ESXi 5.1)
1 Active Directory Domain Controller installed as a VM in the ESXi host

I have my Hyper-V host already joined to the local test domain on the DC VM, but am having issues accessing disk management for the Hyper-V host in Remote Computer Management. When I try to load the page and view the drives in the DC VM it says "Error RPC unavailable".

Has anyone successfully setup Remote Computer Management in a Server 2012 install to manage a physical Hyper-V Server 2012 host?
If anyone has any suggestions please let me know. I have tried these two methods but neither has worked:
http://www.petri.co.il/remotely-managing-windows-2008-server-core-firewall.htm#
http://publicjotting.blogspot.ca/2012/06/hyper-v-server-2012-and-remote-hyper-v.html

Answer:Issues setting up Remote Computer Management for Server 2012

On the machine or VM you want to RM, type in start "Allow" into Start, and click Allow a program through Windows Firewall. Scroll down till you see Windows Remote Management, then make sure Domain is checked. When you connect via RM you need to be connecting from a PC joined to that domain.

Hey everyone,

I have a customer that we just installed a simple 2012 Remote Desktop Server (Session Based Desktops - NOT VDI) for application and data access. The server is a member server of a 2003 domain connected to a 2003 AD Controller.

Users at the company logon to both traditional desktops and a portion of their users will also now be logging into remote desktop sessions on this new box.

For the most part we have everything working how we want it. I am just having a tough time figuring out how best to lock down the RDS environment to close off administrative items I don't want them playing with. Things like control panel, getting into C drive, etc.

I tried to control a lot of these items from the local group policy editor of the server as I didnt want to mess with their domain group policies hitting traditional desktops, but no matter what I do on GPEDIT.MSC, none of the policies are enforced when domain users log in.

Am I missing something? Are the domain level policies overriding all of my local policies on the server? What is the best/easiest way to do some simple lockdowns for such an environment?

I have read online that some people setup a special OU to move the RDS server into and out of when they are doing maintenance, but this sounds like more of a roundabout then anything. I was hoping to just use local policies to control the gaps I want closed off on that single box.

The number of users hitting this box will number no more than 8 so ... Read more

Answer:Easiest way to lock down a single Windows 2012 Remote Desktop server?

Special OU is the easiest. Also, as long as the users are not local admins, a lot of the items are read-only and really not an issue if they get into them.

Download Windows 10 Client Connector Update for Windows Server Essentials 2012 R2 as it now available at Microsoft.

Windows Server Essentials Connector is software that helps you connect your PC or Mac client to Windows Server 2012 R2 with the Windows Server Essentials Experience server role enabled. It also enables and manages key client-side functionality of Windows Server Essentials Experience. On a PC, it provides client backup, a tray icon and the Launchpad, the Dashboard for management of remote servers, and a VPN profile with the capability of auto-dialing and monitoring client health from the server side. On a Mac, it provides health monitoring and the Launchpad.

Get it from Microsoft here.

I would say a single NIC and then let your router handle everything else, unless the server is doing some intense throughput that you need the second NIC for.

Hi,I may have a requirement to enable a supplier to access a server remotely. Once on that server, how do I prevent access to the other servers on my network as typically they can all access eachother. Thanks

Answer:Remote access to one server only?

You can map a network drive from the remote pc if it is just the hard drive of th server that your client needs to access. to prevent him accessing other servers, you can create permissions on active directory that allows him or blocks him from different servers. alternativey, you could configure your remote router's access lists to deny him access to certain ip addresses.

i am playing around with windows server 2003 and am wondering what the best way is to be able to get remote access (ie pull files off of it) and maybe even be able to get a remote window and be able to work on the machine remotely. the catch is that i'd like to be able to get access from outside the network.

i might be wrong, but from what i've heard, VPN or SFTP might be the best way to do this. the only problem w/VPN is that i use a buffalo wbr2-g54 router w/NAT and i don't think it supports a VPN. is SFTP my only option? does windows server 2003 have a nice builtin way to set up an sftp server?

how about the remote desktop connection software? should that work from outside of my network? what ports do i need to forward? thanks!

Why not use Remote Desktop which is part of win2k3's terminal services app? Almost 75% of the configuration is done client-side (good or bad thing, you tell me). If you don't like the regular stuff, go for a program called NetOp. IMO, it's the best remote access software out there.

It is ok..., the web interface doesnt work particularly well (aka hasnt been updated to match client upgrades). I am running an apache server on the box as well. I have system info (temps, etc) displayed on this page and a link to the php pages I use to control eXeem. I still have to ftp into the box on a regular basis to manage/move/delete files.

Anybody know of a slick preferably web based solution for managing these types of things. I have come across a few Bittorrent clients with web interfaces, G3 is anther one I've used their web interface doesnt allow for uploading of torrent files which isnt cool. My objective is to be far away and use a public comp, laptop etc to check up on the fileserver and make sure all is well. Any suggestions?

Answer:File Server Remote Access Rec

I have TorrentFlux setup on my home web server. It doesn't have all of the robust features of, say, ABC, such as universal upload rate control or even on the fly upload rate changing, but I've grown to like it a lot. For some people it's a pain to setup, while for others it was easy. I didn't have many problems with it.

Operating system: Windows XP Home

Thurs. nite, something happened to my computer, where files in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM were corrupt or missing. This has happened before, so I threw in my Windows disk and "repaired" it.

I immediately ran the Norton Antivirus (which had updated that morning). HijackThis (nothing unusual), Adaware6 and Spybot.

I have not had a problem doing this before. However this time, I cannot get online. The two error messages I've received are:

Remote Access Server Error. A device attached to the system is not functioning.

OR

Remote Access Server Error. The request is not supported.

I uninstalled Compuserve, then reinstalled, but still get the same error messages.

Also, about 14 hrs. after the computer bombed, Nortons found a "virus":

Virus name: Suspicious Script
Feature: Script Blocking
Action Taken: Blocked
Suspicious action: File System Object: GetSpecialFolder
I called my internet server (Compuserve) who told me that I needed to uninstall, then reinstall DUN.

Please help. I'm at a friend's house, as I can't get online, so my responses might take time.....

Thanks,
Wendy

I use Windows Remote Desktop Connection to log into work. I have a Vista Home Premium system and the server is a windows XP server (I believe). I have no issues connecting. I have issues when I try to use my mouse in the MS Word Document.

I can fully use the mouse on any other programs but only experience issues in WORD.

The Mouse will work on the Menu and slide bar, but if I try to click on a spot in the document to place the cursor or grab some text, nothing happens.

The network administrator called and said he removed an "offending PDF" file. I tested it and it seemed to work. Tonight, I needed to get some work done and of course it didn't work again.

Any ideas on how I can get this to work? The document is hugh and I can't email it to myself and I don't have FTP access. So I have to work on the server.

Sorry if this topic is in the wrong section. Not sure where it goes.

I would like to setup my server to allow remote access from home. It's on an office network which is separated from the WAN by a router. So long as I'm on this network, I can access the server from any computer connected to it. I enter the https URL of my server through IE and it brings me to the helm interface (the one that comes with Windows Server 2003). I can click on Maintenance and then on Remote Desktop, and it opens a new window with the server's desktop displayed.

If I'm somewhere other than the office network, I can't access it. IE gives me a "can't find webpage" message (or something along those lines). How do I setup my server to access it from outside the office network. I'd prefer to have a similar graphical interface as Remote Desktop.

Answer:Solved: getting remote access to my server

You should be able to access it from anywhere using the MS remote desktop client that ships with xp. The catch is that you have to set your router up to forward all remote desktop requests (port 3389) to your server's ip. From the outside, put IP that your ISP assigns to your router in the remote desktop client and it should open up a login screen. The other option would be to set up an IPSEC connect on your router (if it will let you). Then you connect to your router with IPSEC VPN and it's like your on your network... where ever you are.

Hello,
I've just started with a small company who already have AD and a file server, exchange, etc. They currently use webdav or RDS to remotely access files on the server and everyone complains about having to imput their username and password to open a file and how slow it is. I'm trying to find the best solution to give them access to the files without using the cloud. The main office, where I am has AD. 2 Remote offices have no infrastructure, but using laptops provided by us with domain cached credentials. Then there are 2 people in another country who work from home. I thought VPN either client based for everyone or static between the offices with each office having a DC and syncing files a few times a day. I'm just not sure that is the right choice for such a small company. Circa 30 people. 12 in main office, 5 in the other two offices. Also good to mention, the two other offices do not have a reliable fast internet connection. Please, what solutions do I have without using the Cloud?

I work in a small company with around 40 employess and most of them access our server through remote desktop connection. Most of them have limited capabilities and some were assigned admin rights.
Few days ago someone tried to mess with some confidential folders and we couldnt even open them logged in as administrator. Is a 2003 windows server. My question is if theres a way to track the activity and find out who might have done the changes? The IT guy said there is no way to track it, but since it must have been through one of those remote sessions I think probably theres a way?

Description of Systems:
Two independent family companies, each with their own LAN, FILE SERVERS and WIN98 Workstations, each operating independently and successfully using different workgroup names. One company is using WIN2000 Server and the other WIN2000 Pro on the file server and all workstations use WIN98. Both FILE SERVERS are using NTSF file system on the partitioned drive for the files being shared. Everybody has DSL. I am wanting to be able to work from my home and access the files, via the internet, on each file server.

Observations:
- I am able to intermittently map to the “WIN2000 Server” fileserver using a WIN98 workstation via the internet.
- I am able to consistantly map to the “WIN2000 Server” fileserver using a “WIN2000 Server” workstation via the internet.
- I am unable to map to the “WIN2000 PRO” fileserver, using a WIN98 workstation via the internet.
- I am able to map to one of the WIN98 workstations on the WIN2000 PRO network.
- I am able to ping the “WIN2000 PRO” fileserver but unable to map to the file I need.
- In all cases I am able to ping and/or connect, using PCAnywhere, to any and all servers and workstations from my workstation at home via the internet.

Please help!!!

Answer:Remote access to file server via the internet

Make sure that NetBIOS is bound to your network card on the server/PC you are trying to connect to. Big security risk doing this though...anyone can access your files!! If you have a firewall open to the proper ports with letting static IP's in thru them then you should be fine.

Hi Team,

I plan to get a mac mini. I would like to have direct access to the machine remotely, just like i did when i connected my laptop pc to my desktop pc via VNC.

My specific question :- is it possible to access the mac via a remote client so that it opens in a window on a Win7 64bit I7 pc?

I ultimately want to control the mac desktop via my win7 pc, mouse and keyboard.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Remote Access to Mac mini via VNC client/server

Why wouldn't you just install VNC on your new Mac machine, allowing it to be controlled from the PC?

The product itself is cross-platform.

There are downloads for each host and each client environment.

I'm not a Mac person and only use VNC for Windows hosts and clients. But the product's description certainly shows it as being intended to be cross-platform capable.

I have this application where I want a new hire to fill out an Access record for their application. I want the HR receptionist to be able to control that new hire's use of the computer. I thought I would have the NH (New Hire) go to a computer logged into the terminal server and enter their data. I would have the receptionist create the record and get them started and the rest would just be a fill in the blanks and click the next button. A former network administrator set me up so when I click on the Remote Control to a terminal server user, I can connect without them having to give me permission. I want to set the receptionist up the same way, but I don't neccesarily want to give her admin rights. is that possible?

Mods - Feel free to move this if its in the wrong thread

I have set up a RAID-5 4x2tb drive File server At my house that I use to stream music/movies/TV shows in my home. Pretty easy, Pretty awesome.

I want to take it another step and be able to access files from outside my network I'd like to be able to stream too though not super important.

How do I do this? Do I Need extra software? I'll do what I need to but I'm a bit stuck and google really hasn't helped me much from here. in reality what I want to be able to do is (essentially) type in my public IP address into a browser and move files back and forth and if possible stream media.

Thanks in advance guys!!

Answer:Remote Access/Streaming Server 2008

You'll probably want extra software to do this. You *COULD* do it with IIS, but it's not going to give you a nice interface.

While I haven't used it, I hear lots of people talking about Plex. I believe it has the features you're looking for (and probably a lot more).

Hey everybody,

Im hoping someone here can help me out. I am running Outlook 2007 on my laptop and Exchange 2003 on a personal server located in my apt.

When I am in my apt. connected to my wireless, as expected, I have no issues sending/receiving email through exchange.

When I am on the road however, I am obviously unable to connect to my exchange server. I setup a VPN tunnel that works successfully and when I manually dial the VPN connection or manually put outlook into offline mode (so that it dials the VPN connection), I am able to successfully get my emails through exchange.

My question is, is there away to setup outlook such that I dont have to manually dial the VPN or put it in offline mode? I set the exchange server account settings to automatically detect my connection status, but it is detecting my network connection as being ok, even though the Exchange server is not located on that network and needs to be dialed in.

I know it sounds lazy and it is, but Id rather not have to manually do anything, especially if I decide to give some of my less computer literate friends email addresses in my domain. Id rather not use IMAP and SMTP due to security issues having to open the ports on the firewall.

I am having a very frustrating problem with unauthorized and silent/secret access of my computer. No matter what operating system I install, I am always setup as a client, and someone immediately gains access and control over my entire system. I become unable and authorized to make changes that will prevent or stop this access. I have tried making a windows 7 lite version myself, but either I do not eliminate the correct services or features that I need to, or I eliminate too much and the system does not work correctly or install at all. I do not know anything about group policy, or the snap ins, or the management console, where I know is the solution. I have tried, but while I make changes, they are reverted immediately back, and I am locked out, or lose access to those settings, or my system is shutdown remotely and it locks up, or I screw the system up and it won't boot. I am hoping someone here knows how to eliminate all possibilities, back doors, tunnels, pipes, blue tooth access, remote access, remote assistance, and or any and all third party access to my machine etc. that will permanently disallow and deny any and all remote access, remote desktop, remote assistance, Bluetooth access to my pc except for myself- one user, one log in. I hope this is the correct place to request that sort of thing on here. Or if there is one setting I can change, or service/process I can change, disable or eliminate, to stop this once and forever, I would be greatly appreciative. When I ... Read more

I want to access the files in the server when I go abroad. How can I do that ? I've already given all the clients and the server a static IP.

Another question, are there any security threats that I must be aware of when I connect to the server remotely? I don't want to lose all my data!

I have a Windows 2000 Server in my home office. Two people need to access this server remotely.
What can I do so these two people can gain access to files that reside on the 2000 Server?

I once had a static ip address that enabled the two users to gain access to the server.

Thank you for looking.

Answer:Setting up remote access in Windows 2000 Server

The simplest way is to configure an FTP server on the server. That doesn't require any special handling. If you don't have a static IP address, you can use DynDNS or a similar service to map your dynamic IP address to a static URL.

Hello,

I have installed SQL Server Express 2008 on my desktop and am attempting to connect to it from my lap top. I have enabled remote connections for SQL Server and opened up a port on my desktop. When I attempt to connect to the server instance from my laptop via ipaddress\sqlserver with the Windows 7 firewall turned on and the port open, the attempt fails. However, if I turn off the firewall and attempt to connect via my laptop the connection is successfull.

I followed the steps to open up the port:To enable port 1433 on Windows 7
On the Start menu, click Control Panel.
Click System and Security.
Click Windows Firewall.
Click Advanced Settings.
In the Windows Firewall with Advanced Security on Local Computer dialog, click Inbound Rules.
In the Actions panel, click New Rule?.
In the New Inbound Rule Wizard, click Port, and then click Next.
In the Specific local ports: box type 1433. Ensure that the (default) TCP radio button is selected and then click Next.
Ensure that the (default) Allow the Connection radio button is selected and then click Next.
Clear or select the Domain, Private, and Public checkboxes as appropriate, and then click Next.
In the Name box, type an appropriate name, such as SQL Server Port, and then click Finish.

Can anyone offer up any suggestion on why I can connect with the firewall turned off, but not when it is on?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Hi,

Several months ago I set up a VPN server using Windows 10 (the method I used is described in this tutorial: How To Setup a VPN in Windows 10 - YouTube)

This has been working fine until last week when I suddenly was unable to connect to my VPN server at home (I connect to it when at work).

I have checked my routers port forwarding rules and cannot find anything wrong there.

When I follow the tutorial mentioned above I get an error message when trying to set up a new server. The message is in Norwegian but it reads something like:

Windows cannot set up a connection

Incoming connections depend on the service Route and Remote Access, and it could not be started. See the event log for more information

I'd be very happy if someone could help me fix this.

Answer:My VPN server has stopped working - Route and Remote Access error

Answer:Want to enable remote desktop access for user on Win2k Server, but how?

In Win2k its not called Remote Desktop, it's Terminal Services. I'm assuming you are doing this for remote administration otherwise there are licensing concerns.

In Add/Remove programs go into Add Windows components and add Terminal Services. When asked select Remote Administration mode. I think a reboot is required, but otherwise that should be it.

Hi there,

On Linux, we can easily enable remote access to MySQL server, but on Windows, I got no success so far ( a client tried to connect to MySQL on the server)

Here's the steps to do that (on the server computer):

1. Open a DOS command prompt on the server.
2. Run the following command from the mysql\bin directory:
mysql -u root --password=
3. A mysql> prompt should be displayed.
4. To create a remote user account with root privileges, run the following commands:
GRANT ALL PRIVILEGES ON *.* TO 'USERNAME'@'IP' IDENTIFIED BY 'PASSWORD';

'USERNAME' is the username to be created.
'IP' is the public IP address of the remote connection.
'PASSWORD' is the password to be assigned for this username.
(IP can be replaced with % to allow this user to logon from any host or IP)

mysql> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
mysql> exit;

So it is. But I couldn't connect to that MySQL from another computer, both are Windows XP.

If you have any experience, I'd like to receive your help.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Remote Access not working on Windows Home Server 2011

Well, the first thing we need to know is, does the server have a static IP address or Dynamic? Normally a server will have a static IP address but sometimes not.

1. Check for a static ip address
2. If not static, change it to a static ip address

Report back what you find and we'll dig a little more.

Hi
I am working with windows 8 and I have installed SQL server 2007 and visual studio 2010. Now I want to upgrade these setups to SQL server 2012 and visual studio 2012. what is the advantages of what i want to do and how can i do it easily without corrupting the operating system? Please help.

Answer:Installation of sql server 2012 and visual studio 2012

SQL Server has an upgrade option that is pretty painless. Just run the setup file from your 2012 installation media and click the upgrade option. It will ask you what instance to upgrade, run some checks, and then upgrade it for you.

Visual Studio is a little different. If you install 2012 without uninstalling 2010 first, you will simply just have both versions to choose from. You can completely uninstall 2010 before installing 2012 by finding your 2010 installation file and adding the uninstall and force switches when running it(ex. "C:\vs_ultimate.exe /uninstall /force").

If you keep 2010, 2012 will ask you if you wish to import your settings and whatnot from 2010. If you uninstall 2010, 2012 will just have it all when you open it for the first time.

I've got a customer that needs to have their 2003 Server setup in such a way to host multiple simultaneous remote users, all being able to be within Quickbooks on their own "desktop" interface.

From my reading, the best solution to this seems to be getting RDP & Terminal Services running. If I am wrong here, please lead me in the right direction.

The server will be accessible from a static IP externally, and the company already has QB Enterprise Solutions 2013 running.

Since this is the first time I've ever had to setup a Terminal Services server, could someone lead me in the right direction? Has anyone ever done this for multi-remote Quickbooks access? I've done some light reading on the messiness of CAL licensing and my head is already spinning.

They want to have 4 simultaneous users within QB Enterprise 2013, and the box is a Dell Poweredge 1900 that can support a max of 4GB DDR2 ECC which I am loading in very soon (it runs 32 bit Server 2003 Standard R2; can't install any more). I'm hoping this is enough horsepower to get this to work.

Any pointers or online directions someone can provide to help out in this setup?

Microsoft has released Windows Essentials 2012 which includes new versions of Movie Maker and Photo Gallery for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Details about the new features in Movie Maker and Photo Gallery are available in the Windows Experience Blog, Introducing the New Windows Photo Gallery and Movie Maker.
Windows Essentials 2012 includes the new SkyDrive for Windows app as well as Windows Live Mail, Windows Live Family Safety, Windows Live Writer, Windows Live Messenger, Outlook Connector Pack and Windows Photo Gallery and Windows Movie Maker. Windows Live Mesh and SkyDrive
If you install Windows Essentials 2012, it is important to note that if you have Windows Live Mesh installed, it will automatically be removed if you install the new Movie Maker or Photo Gallery. In its place Microsoft SkyDrive will be installed. Microsoft has specified that if the new Movie Maker and/or Photo Gallery in Windows Essentials 2012 are installed, you can not have Windows Live Mesh on the same PC.
In order to sync folders from the cloud to all of your PCs, it will then be necessary to install SkyDrive on all of your PCs or Macs. (Windows Live Mesh continues to be available from the Download Center: Windows Live Essentials.)

Wow- what a mess this is. You know, the Win8 love/hate thing- desktop OS vs. Tablet... I get it. Trying to make things easier for Joe Average user. No Problem. But this stupified, dumbed-down interface on Essentials is a joke. They have emasculated Small Business Server. I've been deploying SBS since the old 4.5 days. It evolved into what a lot of us feel was the best- 2011. Great product, served a HUGE need, and by 2011 they really fixed most everything that was ever wrong with it.

So of course, MS has to f**k it up. First, by removing Exchange, then by applying this moronic Win8 interface... to a server! It's truly pathetic. It has been sad to watch MS abandon the small business community- both its customers and the people like us who support it. This one is the worst yet.

Answer:2012 Essentials rant

They arn't abandoning them per say, just making the poor decision of trying to force everyone to hosted exchange and office 365.

SBS2011 was a good product and had its place in deployments, I tried to stay away from it though, I honestly don't like small companies having Exchange servers in their office.

Here's a new one for ya.

I have 2 accounts: admin & limited. I use the limited.

Upgraded from live essentials 2011 to essentials 2012. had mesh, skydrive, photo gallery/movie maker, and outlook hotmail connector.

The upgrade updated skydrive, outlook connector, and photogallery/movie maker, and removed mesh, as to be expected.

logged into limited account to access photo gallery and got this:

Went back to admin account and repaired it. It mentioned that a file corruption was preventing the repair. So I uninstalled it, reinstalled it, restarted, logged into admin, and accessed photo gallery. Worked fine.

Went into limited account again with the same error. It does eventually start up, but you have to click OK 5 times to make the error disappear.

If someone knows a fix, let me know. I'll keep trying to work it through, and I'll post what I find.

This is the 'corrupt profile error' when I try to repair:

Answer:Essentials 2012 error

Well, uninstalled every aspect of essentials, including outlook connectors and skydrive, then Ccleanered it up. Got it working after 2 days. MS fix-its and suggestions didn't work. But, I'm happy now.

Hi,

I try installing Windows Essentials and it wont install! This came up for 1 hour

I got bored and cancelled the process and now the windows all user install service agent wont work, I cant log onto and internet connection won't come to my apps I have install.

Do I have to refresh my computer or anything else?

Thanks

Al

Answer:Help with WIndows Essentials 2012

A refresh would be your easiest option. Remember that a refresh will remove any installed apps that were not pre-installed on the system and your data files will land in C:\Windows.old. Since that's the case, I like to suggest that afterwards, you install the apps you life, then create a new image using the "recimg" command line tool. That way your "refresh" will refresh with your apps installed and data intact.

Is it safe to install Windows Essentials 2012 on a Windows 10 Surface Pro 3? Photo Gallery is what I am really after because it has a photo resize function where W10 Photo app does not.

Answer:Windows Essentials 2012

I see no reason why you cannot.
MS is still supporting Windows Essentials.

I don't have a Surface Pro, but I have been using Windows Essentials 2012 programs on my 2 laptops running Win 10.

Why did you use the word" safe" ?
You have heard of warning of that kind ?

Hello, all!

I am preparing to get a Windows Server set up in the near future here at a mission school I just started working at.

Here's what I am planning on running:
Windows Server 2012 Hyper-V, under which I will run 3x virtual machines (Server 2012 Standard, pfSense, and Untangle).

Since I am needing to get this implemented as soon as possible, I am trying to decide what to do, considering Windows Server 2012 R2's release is just around the corner.

I'm wondering... Is 2012 R2 going to be a completely different OS, in that you need to purchase a separate license key to run it if you already have 2012? Or will it be more like a service pack?

Also, can the preview version be upgraded to release once it is released?

The reason I am asking is that I am needing to get this set up as soon as possible, and need to know how to proceed. Should I use Hyper-V preview and Standard preview (if there is one... Only seen datacenter so far) then upgrade to release and purchase licenses, or is there something else that would be preferable?

Thanks!

Answer:Windows Server 2012 to 2012 R2 Questions

2008 R2 and 2012 R2 are new operating systems that require you to purchase them. I believe 2012R2 has gone RTM recently, which means in a few months you should be able to get it.

There are a lot of VM improvements in 2012, and even more in 2012R2. If you're just running a basic setup it's not needed to hold out for, unless you're not under any time constraints, then why not. Here is a list of the major R2 features.

I'm not sure how well pfSense and Untange will run in a Hyper-V VM. The Gen 2 VM and improved Linux support of R2 may be needed for better operation.

Your post is partially inaccurate. The updates for Photo Gallery and Movie Maker will not allow them to run on a Vista operating system, the other items install and run fine on Vista as I'm on a Vista machine as I type this.

I migrated an office from 2003 to 2012 Essentials.

I admin'd the box fine setting it up at home with RDS and installed REALVNC on it. Everything was groovy.

Took it to the office and migrated all the workstations to this new domain controller, migrated profiles, etc, moved files, remapped shares, did scripts, etc. Everything went very smooth.

I get home and cannot get to the box thru the VPN as I always did with the 2003 server. Can't ping it, get to it with RDS, VNC, nothing. Can't get to any of the workstations either. I'm thinkin' ohhh crap, I'm in trouble Monday morning, this office is down hard and dead!

Nope, nothing, no calls. I send an email to ask the Doctor if they turned everything off and he said no, everything is working fine.

I am not interested particularly in the web admin access, that I most likely disabled because I can't reach it either. But it looks interesting and I might re-enable it.

But mainly, how do I get RDS and VNC access back? This is a remote site and I'd like to know before I drive 100 miles round trip.

Answer:Windows 2012 Essentials Question

Windows firewall?
Possibly it (properly) detected the new network when taken to the office, but set itself to Public network instead of Work or Home?

We had that happen once here, except it was when someone did RDP in. The Network Detection dialog popped up, but he ignored the box; Windows presumably then selected Public network and blocked pretty much all inbound connectivity.
Though that did block literally all inbound connections.

Ok so I have been reading up here on rants and different things on the storage spaces piece...

I went from WHS v1 to WHS2011 now but am not running any backups or duplication or anything....

I am now running WHS2012E (if you will)...on a machine to make sure it all looks good. But I only have 1 drive in it at the moment..

so in my ESX 5.5i environment I installed it then added 2 drives...

just for confirmation....

what is the mimimum size drive to use for the OS???
I have a 1tb in there and was going to get 2 x 3tb drives.. and only use them.
but V1 would allow you to duplicate data that way but the new WHS2012E does not.
seems drive pool must be 2 seperate drives in addition to the OS drive so it makes no sense why wyou would want a 3tb OS drive...
(verified this by more googling... hah)
am I missing something here?

I am thinking 250gb or 320gb drive for OS (have them already)
3 x 1tb drive in a pool then mirrored x1 (as I have them too) - if that is what it is called...

I dont need 2 copies of this and 3 copies of that.. raid 5 for this and all that...

I have pics, movies, data files that are shared out to computers in the house... I just want to make sure if a drive goes I can get all my data back....

recommendations?

this machine will be running
movie share
music share
data share

Is Microsoft finally going to release new versions of its Windows Essentials software tools? I know Skype replaced the Windows live Messenger but it would be fantastic to get a new version of Windows Live Writer for my blogs. I would also love new updated versions of Windows Live Mail and Photo Gallery. Anyone know anything about these products. it has been two years since an upgrade and I want to install this bundle on my new laptop today so can someone provide me a link to a page where the latest version is so I can download this software package. I want the latest and I think the one i have on my Win 7 desktop is old, from 2011 perhaps. Kindly assist.

Alright, I have been running into a lot of problems lately with installing Windows Essentials 2012. I have gotten 2 different error codes which I have looked into forums about at and done everything they said to do. I have successfully installed it but then when I attempted to launch Movie Maker (which is all I need) it told me that I was missing something (shouldn't the installation put EVERYTHING you need for the program to run on your computer?!). So I got that file and put it in the appropriate folder and then again attempted to launch Windows Live Movie Maker and I got another message saying I was missing a DIFFERENT file. I have run 2 different virus scans and cleans on my computer (because some forum told me to run a scan). Now what is happening is that I am running the installer and with in matter of seconds it says that Windows Essentials has successfully installed. However, when I go and try and use one of the WLE programs IT... IS... NOT... ON... MY.... COMPUTER! I am starting to get pissed off. I have spent hours on end attempting to fix this problem and no forum has helped me.

Hopefully now I can get some real help on what to do.

Got tired of the start screen email app real quick, went out and downloaded windows essential pack which includes mail.

Program is a work of art, added all my accounts with just a couple of clicks, personal imap accounts, microsoft accounts and even my yahoo pop account (needs to be yahoo mail plus account, which i have for like $20 a year).

Each account has its own set of folders and each account can be given a color, the ribbon menus on top are great and offer multiple options for your emails.

Reader can be completely customized with many different views, custom column headers, etc.

Can all this be synced to other accounts, and devices who knows, I really am not into that so for me this is the perfect email app

I've looked pretty everywhere but I couldn't find a solution.

I also tried to install the messenger or the Photo gallery and Movie maker alone, without mail.
Nothing, it keeps on reporting that darn error
Anybody have an idea on what could be wrong?

I reset my computer because Windows Live Mail was not connecting to the internet and was getting an error message saying that I have used the wrong password. Now, I still can't use WL Mail and Windows Essentials is still "installing" for the last several days. Consequently, I can't uninstall WL Mail or Windows Essentials or fix them. In addition, I think, because WLE is not installed officially, I can't see my saved videos and still get the same error message when I try to connect to WL Mail...error 0x80280006. I tried to reset my WL Mail password to no avail.
BTW, I'm using Windows 10 and maybe it is partly to blame?
I want to be able to use WL Mail and see my videos, but I don't know how. Please help. Thanks.

Did a fresh install of Microsoft Server 2012 R2 Essentials and followed the storage pool wizard by mistake and setup with mirror instead of Stripe + Parity (just MKV etc. storage).

Rookie mistake but how could I simply delete the pool (and folders) and redo manually?

I'm googling like crazy but can't find a solution yet.

I would like to format the drives and re-setup the storage pool.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thx guys.

I had Windows Live Mail Essentials 2011
Mail 2011 and had no problems. Then I upgraded to Windows live mail 2012 and
that is when the problems started.
All email comes in fine
All email sends
fine as long as you only send out one contact.
The problem lies in trying to send out a group contact.
It does not go. when trying to send you get this
error msg : imgur: the simple image sharer
I did not realize this problem until i tried to send out a group contact
In fact I put the program on 3 different machines that were upgrades- same problem
Worse, I put this on 8 client computers who
had windows live mail essentials 2011 prior and same problem.
I went to the Micrososft Forum and told them the problem. They have been working with me to
come up with a fix. i sent them logs that they asked for. So far I only see on
the forum "they are working on it"
This is the forum that i posted to Windows Live Mail Essentials 2012 will not allow
group contacts - Microsoft Community

I suggest prior to putting the
new version on you backup Windows live mail first
Also this does NOT happend
if you are putting the program on for the first time and not doing an
upgrade
It does not matter if you sign into Live Mail with a live account or
you use your own isp, I have tried both and I still cannot send a group
contact.

Once uninstalling 2012 and going back to 2011 (you can still get
2011) the group contacts went just fine

Answer:Bitdefender and Comodo Cleaning Essentials are Best 2012 - PCMag.com

Sorry I call bogus. No way in H E double hockey sticks that Norton gets 4.5 stars and MBAM gets 3. Not to mention they use an old outdated version of MBAM. They compare version 1.51 when version 1.62 has been out for a while now. That just shows that PCMag doesnt want to step on their advertisers or people who pay them money for good reviews. Norton has done this in the past with PCMag and everyone knows it. They had the most adverts in the published mag and they still get favored on their online only mag now.

Not to even mention the fact they dont even test MSE at all. Funny how they test so many, but yet they dont test the one from the OS Developers themselves. PCMag can take a long walk off a short pier. They are only padding the ego of the people who write them checks. They are not nor will they ever be a publication to read if you want real results and feedback. They only care about who lines their pockets.
