VMware View: possible to get a "login history" of a specific user?

Question: VMware View: possible to get a "login history" of a specific user?

Greetings,

We have a shared generic account that is used by personnel. For the circumstances surrounding this account, it must be a shared account as opposed to each employee having their login. I won't go into further detail than this.

But, is there a way to get a list of when and from where (hostname, IP, MAC address) this username logs in and logs off and to what virtual machine they get connected to for each event?

Preferred Solution: VMware View: possible to get a "login history" of a specific user?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I manage the Networks for several companies remotely and not all users are computer friendly enough to know both their username and password, only their Password. So, when doing maintenance and I log on to a PC as an administrator or other user I will often
get a call the next day that their "password is not working" because it is using the last logged on user, which this time is me.

Is it possible in any way to set either a default domain user, or set it to a most often logged on model instead of the current last user or the alternative of prompting for user name every time?

I need to find a way to look up and create a log of the login history of a specific user to find all machines he has logged into that are in our domain. Is there a simple way to do this, such as some DOS commands or batch file? Thanks.

Hi --

I just migrated to a new hard drive and did a clean install of Win7 (did not have SP1 on the DVD).

During the Updating process, windows stopped working and I received an error, something about running Update again, etc. So I rebooted and finished the Upgrading process...no further problems noted.

However, I view the "Installed Updates" and see that KB2604114 and about 20 other updates "FAILED." But when I view the "Update History," it lists KB2604114 and the others as "installed."

I'm confused. Are the updates I'm referring to "FAILED" or are they properly installed?

Thanks!

Answer:Win7 - "View Update History" vs. "Installed Update"

In your description, you might have switched the observations.

"History" is a log that tracks attempts at installing specific updates. One user might have multiple failed attempts for a particular update; or multiple successful attempts if one was looking for a source of a problem.

"Installed updates" records the last successful installation of a specific update; no timestamp, just the date.

My "view windows update" page is blank w/ the exception of one update run yesterday.

Originally I ran the Update Fix-it Tool and that is what wiped my history. I ran the Tool again and but it didn't recover my history.

My "Installed Updates" page is intact showing everything that successfully installed.

Any help?

Answer:win7 "view windows update history" blank/missing

They are still on the PC.
Mine did the same thing back in January.

Mike

My bad.
Click the yellow circled link in left picture and the right window will open listing all the updates.
Clicking "View Update history" in left column towards top of left picture gives just the recent ones after reset or Fix it Tool.

My first update in this list is dated Sept. 1, 2010 when I installed Win 7.

You all know that there is no Folder-View settings that work on ftp folders. But Windows does remember your view setting for every folder you have previously selected a view.
I have over 1000 ftp paths that I have set to "detail view" on a workstation over the last 2 years.   This information is stored 'somewhere' and could probably be exported if I only knew.    A low value clue
> "System Restore" reverses recent view settings for ftp paths.

Sorry to bother you again, but I noted a problem with my Windows 7 computer and update log.

My "view update history" page is completely blank!! Furthermore, my windows update page states that "Updates were installed: Never"

However, if I click on my "Installed Updates" page, it clearly shows that last updates I recieved/installed was on 6/10/15 and more importantly, it shows the all the previous updates that I received are is intact.

What happened?? -- how do i get my "view update history" page to show what it had always shown before (i.e. all the updates I have received up until now??

Any help would be much appreciated?

By the way, do recommend installing all updates (important, recommended, optional) or just important vs just important and recommended...etc?

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x86 and recently, my browser is no longer showing the websites I've visited by date. It will only show Computer and the local files I've accessed. I've attached an image for you to better understand.

Anyone had this problem and was able to fix it? Thanks.

Answer:IE9 - History tab no longer showing websites by "View by Date"

Hi Vendetta

My name is Mohammed from DELL media outreach team

In response to you recent query, by any chance did you delete browsing history recently or reset IE or else please check whether you have made a check mark on the delete browsing history option. You can check that by going in to IE then select Tools->Internet option->in general tab window make sure delete browsing history radio button is unchecked, if not uncheck the option close the browser then try checking the history after visiting any website .Check whether this helps

I accidentally deleted all the information in the "View and Track Your Downloads" list/history. Is there any way to restore the download list, preferably the entire history? Please advise and help if you can. Thank you.

A few days ago I discovered that the list of installed Windows updates (via link "View update history") disappeared. When selected it merely shows a blank screen with only the column headings.

However, if I select the link "Installed Updates" it does indeed populate with all (329) currently installed updates.

Also, if I run the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.2 it does not complain about hoards of missing updates. Similarly, if I run Belarc Advisor it too lists all the updates installed.

I have a full system backup from a few weeks ago that I likely could use to restore the functionality of the
"View update history" link if I knew the name of the specific file, and where it is kept. I've looked in
C\Windows\SoftwareDistribution but cannot determine if anything is amiss.

Can someone provide information regarding the name of the specific file, and where it is kept.

Help Appreciated.

In a Windows 8 PC, User account is "Standard" and Administrator account is different, in which how can I exclude some application which is from asking administrator password to execute?
My situation is specially for application updates such as java and/or adobe reader. Each time, when there is an update, it is asking administrator password to run the same.
Kindly assist.

Answer:Exclude specific application execution in "Standard User"

Hello Anil, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Normally you could use an option in the tutorial below to prevent standard "users" from being able to run a specific file.

Applications - Prevent Running Specified Programs - Windows 7 Help Forums

However, in this case, the user isn't the one running the application. The applications are set to automatically check for updates, so they're running themselves instead. If you turn off the check for updates automatically option in the java and Adobe programs, it should stop this. You will of course need to manually check for updates afterwards every so often though.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I'm trying to use the File History feature in Windows 8.1 to create backups.  When I click "File History" from the control panel, nothing happens.  No new window opens, it just stays at the Control Page.

I've tried manually going to "Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\File History".

All works fine with local Administrative user profile.

Why does File History not start/open/run for the domain user account that is in the Administrators Group?

Answer:"File History" won't open/start for domain user profile/account

Hi,
Base on my lab machine (Windows Server 2008 R2 DC, Windows 8.1 client). either domain admin user or domain standard user, they all work fine.
What's your environment? Did this issue occur on all domain user or specific one?
In some cases, File History may conflict with the enterprise policies (like retention policy). I suggest you contact your IT admin to see if there is some other policy to limit this.

I have a fundamental problem and I know I will be told to revert to an older version of Mac/VMWare or just to Linux, but I'm so close to get everything working.

Basically, I just want to be able to do work with assembly language for the Computer Science degree I'm doing at DMU. To do this I have to have installed:
- Kate (KDE)
- GDB
- Insight
- NASM
- LD
I have managed to install Kate, GDB and NASM (using MacPorts) with the ability to install Insight if I can get the linker (ld) up and running.

Now, the main error message I got was through following these commands (in the Kate terminal) - my program being "eatsyscall.asm:"
bash-3.2$ nasm -f elf -g -F stabs eatsyscall.asm
bash-3.2$ ld -m elf_i386 -o eatsyscall eatsyscall.o
ld: warning: option -m is obsolete and being ignored
ld: file not found: elf_i386
I ran "-m elf_i386" due to the fact I am running a 64-bit OS and Jeff Duntemann says so.

I did an "ld -v," which gave me:
@(#)PROGRAM:ld PROJECT:ld64-136
configured to support archs: armv6 armv7 armv7s i386 x86_64
LTO support using: LLVM version 3.2svn, from Apple Clang 4.2 (build 425.0.24)

Following this, I basically searched for every MacPort containing "elf_i386" and "i386" and "gcc" and installed every one apart from "i386-rtems-gcc" of which I got an error when attempting to install:

Total novice here: I am hoping someone can give me some guidance. My brother-in-law was my computer man and he passed away recently. I may have just messed everything up and I have no one to help. My notebook, an Acer E1 series running Windows 10 without issue until today, slapped me with a black screen with a cursor and nothing else. (This happened while trying to close out of pretty heavy video game for the first time.) Restarting, the Acer logo came up, but then it went back to the black screen with cursor. Control+alt+delete did nothing. Sticky keys did nothing. I tried all diagnostics in the start screens. Automatic repair did nothing. I searched around and read that I could try running chkdsk and that brought up a lot of bad clusters. After that, I moved past the black screen to the login screen. Now, instead of having my username, it simply said Other User and had a blank login screen with "Sign in to: MYCOMPUTERNAME" below it. When I tried to log in using my username, I get stuck in a reboot loop. I could open in safe mode, but nothing else. I did a system refresh. Nothing changed. I mean, my programs are all gone, but outside of safe mode, it's still acting the same. I get to the login screen, OTHER USER, enter my username and password, hit enter, computer reboots. I just discovered if I don't enter my username, it eventually reboots anyway. Rinse. Repeat. Safe mode still works. Does anyone have any idea if I can do anything to fix it? I am moving... Read more

Hi All,

Whenever someone in my family walks away from using the computer with Windows Vista, after the Screen Saver, I'm always taken to a screen that allows only the last user to log back in, but when someone else wants to log in, they need to hit the "Switch User" button to choose a different name.

My question is... Can I have the computer just go back to showing all the users' names (so I don't have to click the "Switch User" button to login as me). I would like this to work, just as XP did... so if the last person who used the computer has to log back in, s/he would just have to click their name again...just like XP did.

Thanks so much!

My server is running Internet Explorer 11. This has only started happening in the past fortnight.
It only happens on the first login of a user where the profile is initalized. If I move on from the error and log out / back in the error does not re-occur.
If I remove the user profile from the server so it has to recreate it the error happens again.

Any ideas or suggestions that might be causing this?
My first thoughts are perhaps something under my group policy settings for IE is not compatible with IE11 and causes this issue..?

I have a domain joined Surface Pro 2 running 8.1 Pro.
The following GPO settings are in place:

* Assign a default domain for logon

* Do not display last logged on user

* Disable logging in with Microsoft accounts - uses the following registry setting - MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\NoConnectedUser - Value = 3

The end goal is for the machine to boot to the login screen that just displays empty user name and password fields
The problem at the moment is that instead of doing that, the client boots to a screen where the only option is to click on "Other user". Only then does the login screen I want, where they enter their username and password in full, actually appear.
These Surface Pro 2's are to be used by small children, and have the "Other User" screen appear is confusing for them, as well as being very annoying for me. It's completely unnecessary.
I've searched all over the 'net looking for an easy way to get the client to boot straight to the standard domain joined log in screen, but every time it just boots to this "Other User" screen that has to be clicked on in order to get the correct
login screen to come up.
Is there any way I can get this to boot straight to the login screen I want?

I have a client that brought me his laptop for removal of the login password. Apparently, his neighbor's cousin -the computer "expert"- added the password to make the PC "harder to hack when you're on the internet" - yeah, his words, not mine, whatever rolleyes. This expert neglected to write down the password, and cannot remember exactly what the password is. Anyhow- here's the problem: when using the tools I normally use for this (Active Password Changer and/or the 'Locksmith' feature in the ERD/MSDaRT), they do not show the account that is passworded. But if I use a file explorer from a preinstall environment, I can see the account in question. This is confusing; let me clarify: If I browse to C:\Users using the file explorer in ERD/MSDaRT or UBCD4Win, I see the normal "Administrator" account, the normal "Guest" account, an account we'll call "Bob", and an account we'll call "Joe". The password is on the account "Joe". When using a password changing tool, the account "Joe" is not listed, only the normal "Administrator" and "Guest" or "Public" accounts, and the "Bob" account. When I boot to Windows and get to the login screen, the account Joe comes up, but not the account Bob. I'm thinking the "expert" that previously worked on the laptop really screwed up the user accounts and profiles. I'm thinking I... Read more

Not sure about the reg fix but you might want to try PClogin and see if it detects all of the accounts. If it detects the account, just check the box marked password is empty. This clears the password. If the "expert" used EFS to encrypt the files of the account then resetting the password would cause all the encrypted files to be inaccessible.

After a clean install of Windows 7 and installing both current NVidia (GeForce 7800GS AGP) drivers and monitor driver (ACER W223X) I was able to get Windows & to run in my monitor's native resolution (1680x1050) but no matter what resolution I run in I get some weird effects. When in the 'Login Screen' I get short black lines scattered about the screen and the controls are all corrupted. Once logged in and on the desktop the graphics are all good with no issues at all. That is until I try to do something that requires Windows to toss me the "User Account Control" dialog.
The dialog is corrupted (see attached) except for the "No" button which is obviously the default and therefore has focus. As I move the mouse over the "Yes" button it gains focus and it becomes clear and visible. The background, although dimmed, displays just fine. If I drag the dialog around the screen, the "No" button leaves copies of itself like mousetracks. When I click yes or no and the dialog closes, the display goes back to normal. This occured both during Windows installation and after it was completed. I just assumed that once the updated drivers were installed it would go away. NOT!
I am guessing Windows is changing the display resolution when dimming the screen or in the login screen. ?? I have exhausted myself trying Vista drivers, XP drivers, Windows default drivers... I have tried about 10 different versions and still no change. Suggestions. Is this an... Read more

Hello.

Hope someone can assist me with the issue I am having in windows 10 Pro.

A few days ago my system Automatically updated to Windows Pro v1511 (OS Build 10586.14)... all went well and seemed to be OK.

Now to my Problem...

When I now go to check for updates it does its checking for updates thing then installs any available update but once it has completed this and I click on "Advanced Options/View Update History" in that all I get is a blank page and all it says is no updates have been installed yet....

But I know that it has installed windows defender updates? because I have seen it download them and complete the updates?

I have tried the reset (windows update .bat) file floating around on the forum, but all that does is clear everything and still no updates are showing in the list when I go to "Advanced Options/View Update History"...

Can anyone please help me get that all back to normal....

This has only been an issue since this update to Windows Pro v1511 (OS Build 10586.14)..

How do I know that the updates in Defender or anything else for that matter are actually installing.. seeing that they are not being listed in the "View Update History" list...

Is anyone else having this issue and if so any assistance on how to fix this will be appreciated...

cheers

I am experiencing issues with my small domain setup. Windows Server 2012 R2 and windows 10 PRO domain attached PC's

Any users who are not a member of the Administrators group cannot login with their domain account (A device attached to the system is not functioning.) or access their file shares (invalid folder) even if they have been granted access to the file-shares.
However if I add them to the administrators group everything works fine with no issues.
I have not made any changes to group policy recently and have no idea what has changed to stop regular users from being able to do anything.

It is strange because there is nothing wrong with devices attached to the PC and the folders are definitely valid. It is all dependent on which account is trying to access.
Please let me know if you need further info.

Hi all,
I recently assigned a new user (the first one) to an XP machine. Previously, as it started up, it prompted with "Administrator" and a password field (which I had left blank), and a message about being able to setup users once I logged in. Now, having assigned a user, all I get is the offering of the new user, and when clicking on that I get prompted for the password. When I type in the password, the desktop is nothing like what it used to look like when I went in through "Administrator" - the desktop image is gone and the shortcuts that were on the desktop are gone. And my drive mappings to my network are gone. How do I get back to the "Administrator" login screen? and/or assign the Administrator desktop to the new user?
T.
PS If its of any help, I assigned the new user because the machine is a client of a destop with a server in it, and I needed a common user/password to make them talk to each other.......

Laptops on Windows 10 Pro seems to show this useless "Other User" option which is defaulted. This requires people to click "Local or domain account password" in the lower left in order to be presented with fields for their username and password. Is there a way to eliminate "Other User" or at least have the system present username and password fields under this option? My desktop on Windows 10 Pro seems to show username and password fields under the "Other User" text, much like it does in this how to: Sign in Screen - Do Not Display User Name in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums Not sure what makes a laptop different or how I can make the behavior match.

I recently received my new computer which is running Windows 7. I created one user account to begin with and was using that for a few hours and then I decided to create a couple of other user accounts. It lets me create these accounts but if I try to log in to any of them (including the guest profile) I get the error "the user profile service failed to login". I have read a number of articles and watched a video on youtube about the issue. They all say to do roughly the same thing, go into regedit and then the profile list and they give some steps involving changing values and such. I have tried this numerous times in different ways and it will not work, it seems my problem is a bit different. In "profile list" in regedit there doesn't even seem to be any record of these accounts whatsoever and no sign of a "corrupt" account which the previously mentioned articles talked about. I'm really stumped here, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All,

I enabled the security policy to not display last logged on user, but now it says OTHER USER, and I don't like how it looks. I would like to just hide that text completely, while keeping that policy enabled. Has anyone found a way to do this? Thank you!

Answer:hide "other user" text from login page

I'm looking for a solution to this too.

Instead of displaying "Other User" I'd like to replace it with "Authorized Users Only" or something to that effect. I don't want a pop up with a long-winded message, just "Authorized Users Only" in place of "Other User".

Surely there must be a way to do this?

(BTW, I already tried changing it in the local security policy editor, and while there is a placer there for displaying a custom logon title, it doesn't seem to have any effect on the login screen.)

May I know is it possible to show domain user's "Display Name" instead of "User Logon Name" as owner in print queue? Our company's domain using generic "User Logon Name", i.e. 001, 002, 003 and so on, each "User Logon Name" will have personalized "Display Name", e.g. Mary, John etc., but a problem is when a print job printed by a user is hold in the print queue of a network printer, other users won't know who is it (the owner of the print job may shown as 001, 002 etc.) and so not able to ask that user to remove the print job. Any ideas? Thanks a lot!

Hi,
I have one big problem. yesterday i was having problems with my laptop, Dell XPS 14z. It was going way slow. Dont know why. I did a complete restore to the date that i but it. Everything went fine. But instead of setup screen where i can create username, it shows login screen. where only "Other User" with a blank icon is. I cant login to it. I did the restore 3 times, but the problem is still there. Im stuck. I have read serveral threads on different forums, but they arent for any help because peoples screens it shows Other user and last user loged in. But in my case it only show Other user. please help...

Answer:problems login screen - "Other User"

Boot to the Advanced Options Boot menu by pressing F8 during startup.
Select Safe Mode, see if you can login there.

When you say I did a complete restore to the date that i but it do you mean you used the built in System Recovery to put it back to factory new state?

How do I hide the "Other user" from the login page?

Trivial I know - but annoying...

One feature I really liked in XP was the ability to look in a folder through My Computer and sort the files by extension. For example if I wanted to get all .jpg files to one side of the folder as I looked for a file, I could click View, Arrange Icons By, Type and make that happen. I don't see that feature in Windows 7. Windows 7 machine, probably heavily infected so I figured the only safe thing to do is a total factory restore. A normal boot brings up the 2 known users and I'm able to log on to either account. A boot using f8 and repair system option brings me to a screen that only shows "other user" an a possible log on. Selecting this I'm queried for a username and password. Nothing works here and I'm given the error "The Specified Domain Either Does Not Exist or Could Not Be Contacted." I checked network settings and I'm still setup as a work-group not a domain. I spent about an hour digging around to no avail so I figured I'd format/restore to factory and since I cant access the recovery partition because of the "other user" option I made the recovery partition the active one. Dam thing failed to boot, missing NTDR. Always worked in the past.

Anyone know whats going on with the "other user" option (root kit?) or have a clue as to how I can use Dells restore partition to create a restore disk?

Thanks for any help.

Hi all,

I have been searching the web for an answer to this question since first getting Windows 10 last year. I would like my File Explorer to open using the "List" view rather than the current default of "Details". I have seen many responses that reference how to change the default view template from Documents to Music, Pictures, ..., but none that actually address this question. Is there a way to do this at all in Win10?

I'm thinking of changing Documents template for Details to remove all columns except for Name. The Details view as it currently has been useful in the past so I hate to lose it all together.

Am I SOL in my request? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Want to change File Explorer default View from "Details" to "List"

Open File Explorer, in the menu bar click view > choose your view (mine is medium icons)

To get the menu bar (if you don't have it showing) put the cursor in the top window bar, right click, click Menu bar. On mine it's the first choice.

This is a question for information about why my networking problem finally was resolved.
I have four PC?s on my network; one Windows 7 and three Windows XP. The Windows 7 PC always sees all three of the other computers. However the Windows XP computers sometimes don?t see the other XP computers when I press ?My Network Places.? Quite by accident I discovered that if I press ?View Workgroup Computers? then ALL the other PC?s in the network DO show up. Furthermore, if I click through "View Workgroup Computers" and access/edit a file on one of the other computers, then this computer will ALSO show up in ?My Network Places.? This behavior seems to be quite consistent and works every time I have tried it. Apparently, this is a workaround to the long vexing problem of why my networked PC?s sometimes don?t show up under ?My Network Places.?

My question: why does ?View Workgroup Computers? apparently always show all the networked PC?s, when ?My Network Places? does so only intermittently or sometimes not at all?

Thanks for any response.

For some reason, my "Recycle Bin" will not display the files within it with the correct filters while in the "Details" view.

For example, I have the "View" set to "Details", and the two columns I have showing are "Name" and "Type", with "Name" selected as the preferred sort order.

With those settings in place, the "Recycle Bin" is not displaying the files in the correct order.I am not sure of the order that it is displaying them, as I can't pick-up on any pattern.

For example, it is displaying:

"File0002.jpg"
"File0003.jpg"
"File0004.jpg"
"File0001.mp3"
"File0001.jpg"

When I adjust it again so it displays them in the correct order, the next time I open the "Recycle Bin", the order has returned to the incorrect display.

Any ideas on how to correct this?

I bought a computer back in December with Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium. I set most folders to "view list" and either "sort by date modified" ascending or "sort by name" ascending. It seems like most of the time when I go to a folder after having changed another folder's "view _____" or "sort by _____" or ascending\descending settings regardless of of what directory it's in, the folder will have changed to different "view by _____" and\or "sort by _____" and\or ascending\descending settings. Anybody know of a fix? Thanks!

Answer:Vista and "sort by _" and "view _" folder settings changing from what I set it to

Welcome to probably the most irritating Vista problem in existence. Microsoft has not even acknowledged that this is a problem yet the web is absolutely overrun by people complaining about it.

The problem is there is left over XP code and the folder settings are stored in 2 places, one for XP and one for Vista. Also, the automatic folder 'sense' that Vista has, where it determines the contents and adjust the folder accordingly, effects it. Those 3 registry keys basically fight over the settings. I've actually had the folders reset, then go back on their own before. Basically the fix that people have the best luck with is erasing the XP keys, increasing the 'bag' size, to store more folder information, and to disable the auto sense. You then have to manually set folders to Music, Pictures and Video, etc...

1. Go to Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization -> Folder Options.
2. View tab -> Uncheck Remember each folder view settings.
3. Press Reset all folders, then apply to all folders. Press apply, then OK.
4. Run the following registry file. Copy this text into a Notepad file. Save it as 'all files', so you can add your own extension. Name it something like Fix.reg ... it will appear as a registry file that merges with the registry.

Code:

Hey guys, I'm working on my neighbor's computer that I have posted about before. The corrupted "non-system" files which were all over the HDD are now repaired after running chkdsk c:\r and the computer is running much better since I ran sfc\scannow and repaired the corrupted system files. I ran MS onecare live's virus scanner and it was able to complete now. No viruses were found. I still have a few lingering small issues it seems. The CD/DVD drive disappeared, but I got that back with a registry fix. Now the current problem is that the "view" and "general" tabs are gone from the file options window. Any idea what's causing that? I searched the web, and found some fixes, but I couldn't use them because I couldn't get gpedit.msc to run. That's my second question. I get a error saying "MMC could not create the snap-in." Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Another question/puzzle. Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I clean installed W8.1 three days ago, and the first thing I did was bring it up to date with all the offered updates. All installed successfully and I thought no more of it. At some point after this I made a system image backup, which today I have restored to. When I now look at the "classic" windows update screen it says I have never checked for updates and none are installed. Forcing a check for updates brings only two up as can be seen in the pictures. If I go to "view installed updates" then there is a lot of stuff in there, whih I assume could be the previously installed original batch.
I'm guessing this is normal behaviour but it seems slightly odd (the on screen messages at least)

Answer:No update history says "never checked" & "never installed"

Not odd... Considering that is a "clean install"(albeit with integrated updates) - thus no update history (file) exists.

Greetings!

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

Thanks!
~Joe

WIN98's"temporaryinternet files"(inside internet options/general tab)
i understand what they do(help load web pages faster)but can they be deleted without causing trouble? my "view files" are deleted ,on purpose, when i shut down my computer, but my "view objects" remain untouched.
so my question, can i delete my "view objects" files without causing any other trouble than slowing down pages when i re visit them? there are some files with mumble-jumbo therefore i like to clean out these files for security purposes.

Answer:TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES's: "VIEW FILES"and"VIEW OBJECTS" /...are they necessary

The items listed in "View Objects" are downloaded browser plug-ins that allow you to do such things as play Shockwave animations, interact with certain Java sites (like msnbc.com), play some audio files, etc.

You probably don't want to delete them because they will restrict the functionality of the browser. You *can* delete them, but you'll just have to download them again when you visit a page that requires the functionality.

Ok, this is my third attempt, after re-booting and re-booting. This is my wife's Sony, abt. 3 years old, P4, WinXP HE, 512k ram. For a long time now it has been "temperamental". Among the latest is I can no longer "switch user" as normally. Clicking Start/log off/switch user does absolutely nothing now, it merely reverts to the former screen. Start/log off/log off does work, however.
And the shortcut that I used to use, the Win logo key +L now goes to "UNLOCK COMPUTER", a pop-up message that tells me the pc is in use and locked and only I (presumably as an administrator) with the proper password can now unlock it..
Problem: what the heck is the password?
We don't recall ever setting one.
Control+Alt+Delete does nothing here. Once at this screen, my only recourse is to reboot. ("Cancel" is greyed out. I think though that a few days ago it wasn't and I could cancel. Is that my faulty memory or is this thing getting worse?)

A side note: I did recently download and utilize a reg cleaner freeware "Regseeker" which I used to delete only several items it said were not used or broken links. (It also allegedly created a back-up before deletion, but darned if I can see where or how I can get them back!)
I also disabled, thanks to another tech "advice", several services via Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services. However, that techie claims nothing I disabled in his list should affect this.

Thanks!

I am going 'round & 'round with this issue. I log on as limited user account for security. However, when I am on that acct, I cannot copy files to the external HP drive - I have to switch over to the admin user account to do so. In order to use the limited account for this operation, I have read that you should disable simple file sharing, (on admin acct), then rt clik on the file u want to copy - this then opens a menu with security tab where you are supposed to be able to give full control to the limited acct for that file. My admin acct that brings up this menu has those boxes to check grayed out. Also, do you have to rt click and give full permission for any file that you want to copy? (once you have this all figured out) - Seems a bit cumbersome. Any ideas anyone?? Thanks.

Hello Jayrrus, and welcome to Vista Forums.

I would recommend that you use Microsoft Standalone System Sweeper to scan your system with at boot to help make sure that your system is malware free first.

Afterwards, you might see if you may be able to do a system restore at boot using a restore point dated before you had these issues to see if that may be able to fix them.

It seems that every time I go to view images, the "view" defaults to "filmstrip"- can I change this setting so that I ALWAYS get "thumbnail" view? It's really annoying to have to keep changing it all the time.

Answer:How do I set "view" so that it doesn't keep defaulting to "filmstrip"?

This reg edit should fix it.

#2 Increase folder view size limit to 8000

To use the Regedits: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

Hi From Turkey

I have a problem.
I bought a new computer with windows seven Pro
Here is a company and we have a domain controller.
So my old computer (With windows XP Pro) was in domain.
I joined in my new computer to domain.
I removed the Harddisk of my old computer. and then i put it into my new computer case. second drive.
I restarted the computer. When i look the Second drive i can see "Document and Setting" directory. iam logging in to "Desktop" directory to copy my old files to my new desktop. but it was EMPTY.

When i remove the harddrive and put it into my old computer i can see all the files.
Has anybody have any idea?

P.S. Sorry for my bad English.

Answer:I cannot view the XP files "Desktop" "My documents"

Set the Win 7 PC to show ALL Files and Show Hidden and System files.

When that old hard drive is in the new computer Take Ownership of that folder. Set permissions to allow Full Control of that folder for your username.

When I click on "tools" on the menu bar in any folder that I am exploring and subsequently click on "folder options" I notice that the "view" tab is completely missing. The only tab I have access to is "file types"

This creates a serious problem when dealing with hidden folders that were hidden prior to me having knowledge of this "view" feature being absent.

What are my options to restore this "view" tab so that I can view the hidden files that I need access to?

TIA

Answer:"View Tab" in "Folder Options" missing

Other than a system restore, I don't know how to restore the view tab. I can tell you how to enable the hidden files and folders from the registry.
Start> Run> type: regedit and hit OK. Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
Advanced
Click on Advanced folder in the left pane and look for Hidden in the right panel. Set the value to 1 to show and 2 to hide.
If not there, create DWORD value with Value name: Hidden and set the value as above.

Edit: Forgot to add, you need to restart computer for settings to be changed.

Hello,

I've searched the forum and could not find an answer to this problem.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise machine where at the login screen the "Switch User" button is missing and so I am unable to clear the last user.

Just about all the results I got back on this topic was how to re-enable the "Switch User". This doesn't help because I can't login to make the change.

TIA!

*update*

Just found out that most of ProgramData's cleared out too.
Yea, can't really restore that stuff. Didn't lose anything thanks to my ocd filing system.
Sigh....all nighter restoring my system, here I come.

So now, changing the focus, please enlighten me as to how this happened?
Why did folders appear inside my "oldwindows" that had ties back to my active user account?
Why did deleting folders inside "oldwindows", specifically "protected operating system files" affect the active ones in C:\Users?
Why did some apps that I've installed only on this new image have files and folders inside the old?

Does Windows read everywhere for files and such?
Does putting .old in folder names prevent this?

And how do All Users, Public, and Default User work?

------------------------------------------------------

Hi there, I messed up really really bad.

Long long long story short, I made the mistake of renaming my windows.old file to oldwindows, not to sure what I was thinking at the time.
Used "take ownership" to delete some of the old files like the system32 folder and others.
"Hide protected operating system files" was unchecked when I was deleting things.
(because of the above) Windows ended up reading/associating some files, folders, and services with the old user, I think.
My permissions got screwed up. Ended up with like 8 or 9 security permission profiles for some folders.

Not too big of a deal, didn't realize this at ... Read more

Answer:Restore "All User" and "Default User" profiles?

Deleting stuff from windows.old folder doesn't affect the current win7 installation! Are you sure you changed permissions on windows.old only (or files within)? Only deleted stuff in windows.old?

Why not user "peter"?

Hi all,
I recently created a new user account on a win 7 home premium machine before I'd had much experience with win 7 (but years with 2000 and xp).
Instead of users\Roger\ it created users\user which I now realise is not correct. (I didn't call my account "user", either, before you ask. )
Can I fix this without deleting the profile and starting again, as I've done hours of work since that little stuff up.
Thanks in advance,
Roger.

So I have my entire hard drive backed up to an image file. I had to format and put a new hard drive in my machine. All is fine and dandy, but when I try to access my user's folder in "documents and settings" on the mounted "image" all I get is "access is denied" - anyone know how to fix this, or get around it?

Hi All,

Is there an easy to "split" a 40 Gb user file area into ten 4 Gb "chunks", for the purpose of backing up onto ten DVDs? In other words, is there an easy way to copy a 40 Gb file area onto ten DVDs?

Operating System is Windows 7 Enterprise (64 bit).

Thank you for your time and help,
Best regards,
James

Answer:"Splitting" 40 Gb user file system into ten 4 Gb "chunks"

Perhaps if you save to a FAT32 formatted partition.
This is automatically done by image backup software such as Macrium and Acronis.

I have Windows XP Pro., sp3.

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?

reoneill

Answer:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

I tried to rename computer and now there's two entries in log in screen. That new one is set as default and wouldn't accept any password but original (normal) one does. Long in is set on auto but still have to chose between those 2 when starting/restarting.
I can't find that new one anywhere to disable/delete it. Not in Users or any other place for handling accounts.
How to get rid of or where to find it ?

Answer:Reanamed "Computer", now 2 of "Me" at login screen.

Not knowing if this is what happened in your case, but what you describe occasionally happens when Windows is set up to sign in automatically to a user account and then computer name is changed.

The reason is that a full username as long as Windows is concerned is different than username from user's point of view; Mike in your case or Kari in mine are usernames for most we do and need to use a username for but actually they are just user profile names. For Windows the username is ComputerName\UserProfileName.

On laptop I am writing this for instance my full username is AGM-W10LAP01\Kari, even when I am in fact using a Microsoft account. Three different things: my Windows sign-in user account is a Microsoft account [email protected], my user profile name is Kari, my full username is AGM-W10LAP01\Kari.

Long story short, that other you which does not accept your password is doing so because it is user OldComputerName\Mike. That computer name is no longer valid making the username invalid.

I've seen the duplicate using old computer name as part of full username going away when Windows after computer name change is then set to sign in automatically with a local admin account. Restart and remove automatic sign in and see if it works.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
Notes....
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Value Name: SFCShowProgress
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

I'm not the only person to have this problem. I received a private message from a member of another forum where I posted about this problem several weeks ago. That person also has the same problem with the duration field.

The tech guys on that forum were unable to find the source... Read more

I'm hearing complaints from a couple of people that their MS Word 2007 tool bars are so different they are disliking the program very much. I have tried to find a way to make those tool bars look more like the ones in Office 2003 or 2000 but no luck.

Is there a fix for this?

Just wondering if Win 8.1 somehow made available a "all programs" list view (as per win 7 start) versus the highly undesirable Metro all programs view ? Can't find any evidence of it ?
Is there a way to boot into desktop view directly (as opposed to metro view) yet ?
Or am I going to have to buy Start8 still ?

Also, is there a "what's new in Win 8.1" somewhere ?

Answer:"All Programs" List View as per Win 7 versus Metro view

Here is a video I made showing how to boot directly to the desktop in Windows 8.1.

Here is a whole playlist of both Windows 8 and 8.1 videos.

Would like to not have UAC pop-up for files & folders on non-C: drives, so expect they need to have "full control". Default is Special Permissions. Is there a way to default to "full control" when new folders are created, or do I need to mod permissions for each one? Note that I am NOT talking about anything on the o/s drive C:.

Answer:Permissions for non-system, "user" drives; not "c:"

How about right clicking the non C drive - clicking Properties - Security tab? Setting full control there for the entire drive? Does that work for you bro?

Thanks,

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

If I'm logged in Windows as user "u1", I can execute "cmd.exe" "as administrator" by choosing

Code:
"Start" -> "cmd.exe" and right-click "Run as administrator".
I would like to start another "cmd.exe" console as "u2" and "as administrator".
(So, "u2" is not the current logged in user).

The following command:

Code:
u1 cmd.exe> runas /user:u2 "cmd.exe"
runs "cmd.exe" as "u2" but not "as administrator".

I would like to do this in command line. Can you tell me how?

Best regards.

Nota:
u1 cmd.exe> means: I'm running "cmd.exe" as "u1".

Answer:Run "cmd.exe" as a given user and "as administrator" in command line

Hi Lea,

I don't believe that what you want to accomplish is possible. This is because Windows only "runs" one login at a time, unlike some true multi user operating systems, such as Linux.

If your logged in as U1, then you can only perform operations as U1, or as the Administrator. As far as running things as the Administrator is concerned, I believe in this case that you simply inherit the Administrators permission levels, thus permitting you to perform elevated activities.

If your U1 login has Administrator privileges then running as Administrator will be no different to running as U1!

Good luck

Davo

Something happened today and I can no longer access my regular "user" account.

There are five "users" showing in the MMC program in Windows 7 and only one is working. The problem with this is that it does not contain any of the information and links that I use daily.

The accounts are as follows;

Administrator (disabled)
D (not disabled)
DCM (disabled)
Guest (disabled)
Homegroupuser$ (not disabled)

I cannot remove the "disabled" status or rename any of these users. An error pops up saying "access denied".

Is there some way to do this that I have not found?

I tried "googleing" this but did nothave any luck.

Thanks

I had a problem with my laptop, everytime I boot it said an operating system could not be found, disconnect any hard drives and I couldn't troubleshoot or repair any problems, it just kept looping.
So I did a reinstall of Windows 10 and chose to keep the files from the old system.
The installation was successful, and when I clicked on my Windows.old folder, the "User" folder was empty while the rest had 11 GB of data.
Any solutions or my pics, documents etc are gone?

I am running Windows XP (SP3) as a virtual machine in VMWare Player 2.5.2. Normally in the "Safely Remove" tray icon I had four components by default, in addition to whatever USB devices I had connected to the virtual machine.

Recently, I chose to "safely remove" a USB device, but my mouse slipped, and instead I "safely removed" the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host Controller" and/or the "Inter(R) 82371AB/EB PCI to USB Universal Host Controller" (both are missing now, but I think I have written their names correctly).

The components that remain are "VMware Accelerated AMD PCNet Adapter" and "Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)"

Now the virtual OS has no USB capability. I have looked everywhere I can, including Device Manager, and see no sign of the missing Controllers. It seems odd that a virtual component like that could suddenly disappear -- but since it's not a physically-removable drive, I can't just plug it back in.

I have tried doing a Windows Restore to a previous date (before my mistake), but that did not restore the USB Controllers.

How can I restore the USB capability?
