sbs 2011 essentials - hardware suggestions

Question: sbs 2011 essentials - hardware suggestions

I am going to set up a small business server with sbs 2011 essentials. there will be about 8 workstations connected to the server. The applications are not too resource intensive. It is for a financial services firm (accounting/tax).

I need a reliable server that will last. What would you suggest for hardware? Can you load it on a desktop setup w/ an i5 sandybridge config?

What hardware would you suggest?

Preferred Solution: sbs 2011 essentials - hardware suggestions

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: sbs 2011 essentials - hardware suggestions

Yes, you can. I'm running the Standard version on a Core2Duo 2.66 with 8GB's of RAM (lower than min specs on CPU and min on RAM). It runs fine with 4 workstations - more are coming soon.

The i5 will do great for it, just make sure you have at least 8 GB of RAM. Mine ran good with 4, but had to up it to 8 for the business needs.

I've been having a lot of difficulty getting rid of Security Essentials 2011 on one of my computers. I tried following the guide for it on this website, but my problem occurs after I have installed MBAM. It always installs successfully; however, when I try to start the program, nothing happens. I don't even get a fake warning message. I've tried in/out of Safe Mode, using rkill, CCleaner, renaming files, and a clean boot, but I always get the same result. I also tried running SB S&D but the exact same thing happens. I eventually decided to post on this forum, and read the sticky:Preparation Guide For Use Before Using Malware Removal Tools and Requesting Help, but I got to the part about using D.D.S., and it get's about 2/3 of the way done and freezes there. I have to a hard reboot in order to unfreeze it. It says it shouldn't take longer than 3 minutes, but I let it run for an hour. There shouldn't be any script blocking programs running either, I disabled just about everything I can think of to disable. Sorry about my lack of any sort of log to post. Here's my computer specs though:Windows XP SP3 x64 bitIntel Core 2 Duo T7300 @2.00Ghz3Gb of RAMNvidia GeForce 8600m GT

Welcome to BC

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode and logging as Administrator? Press F8 at boot up a couple times to access advanced menu and choose safe mode with networking. Let me know how it goes. Make sure you update mbam and run a quick scan.

Not sure if this is the right section, but I recently installed Windows Live Essentials 2011, and I want to rollback Windows Movie Maker to the previous version, 6.0 I think. How can I go about doing that?

Answer:Live Essentials 2011

Unfortunately, you can't mix and match the program versions in Essentials - it's pretty much an all-or-nothing thing for those you choose to install. So if you want to go back to a prior version, you need to do so for all Essential programs you are using.

Also, uninstalling 2011 does not automatically re-install or restore whatever version you were using before - that feature is not available and it cannot be done. Once you uninstall 2011, you need to find the prior versions of the programs you were using and install them again (and that can be difficult as not many places still carry the older versions - you can't get them through Microsoft for certain).

I'm not sure, but the version is 14 something and 2011 is 15 something, so this may be what you want. Be warned that I've heard uninstalling 2011 is a bear and sometimes prevents installing 2009 even when uninstalled. I'd use Revo on 2011 to be more sure. Again, I don't know for sure if this is it, but it's all I could find other than torrent sites after 30 minutes of searching. Download Free Windows Live Essentials, Windows Live Essentials 14.0.8064.0206 Download.

I hope this helps and is what you're looking for.

Good luck!

Answer:Windows Live Essentials 2011

I'm guessing you have a Microsoft Hotmail or account as well? In which case close Live Mail and try logging into Windows Live: and on the left side click the 'manage' link - you should see Facebook listed as a connection - click the 'edit' button and select 'remove this connection completely' Click 'ok' and log out. Restart Live Mail and see if the contacts have gone."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floyd

Hello Seven Forums,

I started out with Win7Pro that just had Windows Live Mail. Then came along Windows Live Mail Essentials 2011 which reported to the greatest thing since the wheel. However I really do not like the program, especialy the NAG to long into Windows Live using my ID etc. I have not been able to remove that NAG so I want to remove the essentials part but KEEP the garden variety of Windows Live Mail. 6 moths ago I did this but it removed windows live mail so had to download it from Microsoft and re-install it, so I would like a better uninstall so as to keep windows live Mail only. Can anyone suggest a simple way to do that. I have exported what messages I want to keep along with my address book.

I would appreciate any help with this. I have another question but is unrelated so will post another message for that question.

Windows seven forum has been a great help to me in the past, thanks to all.

Answer:Windows Live Essentials 2011

You download Windows Live Mail as a single application here: Windows Live Mail 2011

It'll download the installer first then you just need to click "Choose the programs you want to install", and then deselect the apps you don't want.

What do I need to do if I install 2011 WLEssentials ?

You can add Print icon to Quick Access toolbar (those very small symbols top left). To do this, open the menu to add or remove Quick Access icons, choose Print:

Afterwards you have the Print icon visible:

You can also find Print from the main menu:

I had Windows Live Essentials installed and removed it and now I'm trying to install it back and the problem is that when I try and install it. It's staying that the programs are still installed but there is no Windows Live Essentials in the Programs/Features to remove it and I searched for the programs there is nothing there.

This is the fix thanks to: tagen

This is what I did:

1.) Installed: Everything Everything Search Engine

2.) Searched for these with Find Everything and uninstalled all of them.

3.) Then what I did was run Windows Update and installed Windows Live Essentials 2011 rebooted.

Then I got the Installer back in Program/Features and ran it and Repaired it. Everything is running fine now.

I get a pop up that says that I have updates to install. One is Windows Live Essentials 2011. When I try to download it, I get a msg that says: " Couldn't install programs. You already have different build flavor of Windows Live." Then under help I get " \If you want to install this version, first uninstall the version on your computer." I checked and Windows Live Essentials 2011 KB2434419 is listed several times as follows: Failed 10/21, successful 10/21, successful 10/27, successful 10/28. The pop up also has Error: 0x80280008.

If Live is already installed, why do I get an update notice? Do I need to uninstall all the other downloads? I have a folder Windows Live but no sub-folder or other folder that shows Live Essentials. Windows Live shows 30 updates over the last month or so. Do I need to uninstall the Windows Live Program. I have an uninstall program, Revo Uninstaller, that shows a Windows Live Essentials Program. Should I uninstall it? Basically, how many of these should I uninstall? Or how can I get the notice to download to stop appearing?

Just finished setting up a new server with SBS 2011 Essentials. Got four workstations hooked up, all Win 7 Business x64. Two are on a new motherboard with UEFI BIOS' on them. I had no idea that Windows was going to use GPT instead of MBR on the drives. Got both of the new workstations totally done and when I tried to make the backups, they fail every single time. Checked Microsoft's website and find out that the backup feature doesn't work on GPT partitions!

I presume there is not way to convert the GPT partitions to MBR without total data loss? How do I get Windows to not use GPT and use MBR on these drives? (500GB drives) I got a bad feeling that I am going to have to start totally over from scratch. Or might I be able to make say an Acronis image of the workstations, re-format the hard drive using MBR and then restoring the image?

I could bash my head against the wall right about now. Wished I knew about this issue before hand or wished MS would fix this!

Answer:SBS 2011 Essentials: Can't backup GPT partitions?

I do not know of a way to convert GPT to MBR.

Your story is interesting though because a few years ago I tried to get my system to install to GPT to try it out, where yours did it automatically. The only thing I can think of is to check your motherboard UEFI settings to see if there is an option to enable/disable boot to GPT, then disable it. I would also research your servers model # on help forums to see if anyone with that specific model has seen the issue. Finally, it's possible that the drive was already formatted to GPT before you tried to install the OS (one of the ways to force GPT installation). To solve this, back up your data, then pull the drive and write zero's to it to destroy the GPT, then reinstall the OS. It should choose MBR by default.

Hello! I downloaded Windows Essentials 2011 ( it came in as a Windows Update) it got installed. Nothing but problems..missing components in Messenger, Continually reconnecting..When reconnecting causes Windows hardware fail sound ( device failed to connect sound). I tried to repair..did not work. Tried to restore mky computer to earlier date.."failed to restore message" Uninstalled several times. reinstalled continues to have missing components and continues to show the message that MSG is trying to reconnect with the windows sound alert........I contacted Microsoft and they suggested I install Windows live 2011/security ( which is an anti virus..I have AVG 9. on my computer. So when I went to download Microsoft it said I should uninstall AVG. So I contacted AVG for help and they had me send them some files. They said they could fix the problem. Well I haven't heard from them since Thursday and it is now Sunday. I have sent several emails and no response. Not even there auto reply! So I need help . I must have some kind of virus. ( or something). I did look on the internet and it looks like other people are having trouble with Windows Live 2011 also. But couldn't find any help. Thanks to anyone that can help......

Answer:Windows Live Essentials 2011

The correct way to remove AVG 2011 is through its program folder via Start > All Programs or by using Add/Remove Programs / Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7.If for some reason the AVG uninstall failed using the normal method of Add/Remove, download and run the latest AVG installation file as described here. As noted on that page, do not use the AVG Removal tool which is intended for versions prior to 2011. When the AVG Installer windows appears choose the option to Remove and click Continue to allow the AVG 2011 uninstaller to run. Restart the computer when done.As a last resort you can use the uninstall/cleanup utility (AVG Remover) provided in AVG 2011+9.0+8.x Uninstall/Re-Install Instructions. After restarting and removing the folders, stop where instructed to Stop here if not re-installing.AVG Remover eliminates all the parts of your AVG installation from your computer, including registry items, installation files, user files, etc. AVG Remover is the last option to be used in case the AVG uninstall / repair installation process has failed repeatedly.AVG Download Tools: AVG RemoverIMPORTANT NOTE: Before removing your existing anti-virus, you should download and save the setup file for the anti-virus you are going to replace it with. After doing that, disconnect from the Internet, uninstall your current anti-virus, reboot and then install the replacement. Reboot again to ensure it is working properly before reconnecting to the Internet.

Frustrated with Windows Live Mail 2011. I did not have Windows Auto-Update turned off so I found Live Essentials 2011 and Live Mail 2011 installed one morning. I do not like the new Mail 2011. Every time I open up the program I get a warning to wait until Windows configures Mail program. Can't send photo attachments, asks me to sign in somewhere. I normally don't sign into anything I don't want to. So I installed "Postbox Express Free". To be able to Import contacts, etc, I can't find the location of my Mail Contacts nor do I know what file name is for my Contacts storage file that Windows Live Mail uses. Anyone have the same problems? Any other suggestions for free mail clients? Thanks anyone.

I know there has been discussion on this before but I am confused. I downloaded the update some time ago and got messages in Window Live Mail that I was not authorised and had tried too many times to log on so my account was blocked! I could get into Live Mail but my Contacts were not available any more. Fed up, I restored my computer to an earlier time.
I want to resize photos so, on advice I found, I did a selective update of Windows Live Essentials for just the Photo Program. However, the whole update installed itself and the Live Mail was defective again. I'm now back to a new restore point but still want the Photo Program. I am running AVG Anti-Virus protection.
Any advice greatly appreciated.

Answer:Windows Live Essentials 2011

Go to the Start orb and in the search type in appwiz.cpl and hit enter. Choose to Change the Live Essentials and choose to just uninstall Live Mail and leave everything else. If that doesn't work uninstall all of Essentials, and then reinstall it, but this time in the What to Install Window uncheck Live Mail part of the program.

I just downloaded and installed Windows Live Essentials 2011. When I tried to watch a movie I have in my media library through my WDLive TV device it would not let me login to network shares. After some investigating I uninstalled Windows Live Essentials 2011 completely and was again able to log into network shares on my WDtv Live.

Evidently there is a problem between WDTV Live and Windows Live Sign in Assistant in Windows Essentials Live 2011 and it blocks access through my WDTV. My Question: Where in Options for Windows Live Mail Essentials 2011 can I remove the requirement that large emails messages will be divided into 256KB sizes. I checked each option tab and contents in options, Mail and other sections, could not find that options endabled. I want to disable it if possible. I don't think it's a limit in WLM.
In WLM 2012 I just sent and received an Email with a 2,886 KB .rtf attachment.
No problems and file was received as a single file in Outlook 2010 and WLM 2012.

You may want to check with the ISPs for the sending and receiving.

You can do a Google search for windows live mail file size limit
Here is one thread i found from MS about this.

Hello, this is hardy81 sometimes I feel a hundred.

I use windows live mail 2011 essentials. During the past month or so I have been getting a random complaint that some people I email to get up to 45 copies of the same message with the same time. I use Cox Cable high speed with the fastest speed they have available. I talked to their teck support and could not help me sayting that if I used Web mail I would not have a problem, however I have allways usind Microsoft email programs without a problem starting with Windows 3.11, long time ago. I use AVG PAID version for antivirus, along with Malware bytes. It does not appear that I have a virus or some other crazy bug. Sometimes I use the mouse pointer to click the send button, sometimes I just click the enter button on the keyboard to send mail. I am aware of the possibilityof the keyboard enter switch bouncing, however the keyboard is new, about three months old, it is the very bright one with large yellow keys and black letters, eys require a high resolution key board.

Does anyone have an idea about what may cause this???

The latest and greatest version of the Live Essentials pack is out of Beta and ready for everyone to install.

Messenger now has the ability to connect to social sites like Facebook, MySpace and LinkdIn. You can use Facebook Chat right via the Messenger interface without having to sign into Facebook's website.

Photo Gallery now has the option to create Panoramic Views out of a set of photos as well as the new Photo Fuse which can take similar photos to "fuse" them together for a whole new photo.

There is so many more options that it just cant be justified in such a small post. Check out their site and see for yourself. This is by far the best Live package to date.

It sounds like it would be well-suited to a home file server/backup, as it does full backup of client systems. It sounds like it does some of what WHS does, but is meant for a business market.

I think at one time SBS was able to do WHS-like drive pooling. I haven't seen any info, but can SBS 2011 do that?

I am just curious how well it works. Right now I have Server 2008 running with a virtual WHS for backups, but it's not really optimal as backups aren't really backed up. I have the clients doing a SyncToy backup, but it's not as reliable as I would like. I thought SBS could replace the pair working together, and would remove some complications and maybe be a little more dependable.

Is there anyway I can install the windows Live Mail 2011 Essentials and use CUSTOM option to choose what parts of the program I want to install. And if it is possible and it turns out it does not function the way I expected and want to goback to the standard Live Mail 2011, no Essentials.

Or, is there a way to install all of the 2011 Essentials except the OFFICE 2007 MENU BAR, which I do not really like.

Not sure why Microsoft is telling it's users to use it the way we say or go to some other operating system.

Answer:Windows Live Mail 2011 essentials

Each component of WLE, can be installed separately. If you want to test a piece of software, make a system restore point, first. You can go back to the way everything was before the install.
You can uninstall the software, too. In my opinion System Restore is a better way to go, you remove everything; even registry pieces usually left behind.

I don't get it. Twice i've tried to install windows live essentials, and both times is says that it succeeded. However, when i go to my start menu, there is no entry for Windows Live essentials, its not in "Program files" OR "Program Files(x86)" and its not even listed in "Program features". Its basically non-existent on my machine. all i wanted was to install movie maker. I open the installer, select the photo viewer/Movie Maker package, and click install. Then after a two minute wait, it tells me the install was successful and for me to click the close button to start using live essentials. I'm stumped! I only have one partition on my HDD, and the files are not there, so that rules out the files being my hard disk. And they were not installed on my flash drive. So does anyone what happened or where the files went?

Answer:Windows Live Essentials 2011 won't install

Actually... nevermind. I found a portable version that i've used in the past and liked even better. Portable Movie Maker

Microsoft has released the final version of Windows Live Essentials 2011.
The Windows Live team has aimed to ensure that the next version of Windows Live Essentials takes advantage of Windows 7 fully. All applications now use the new ribbon UI and integrate further into Windows 7 by using Jumplists. Windows Live Sync is also included which keeps your files synchronized on the web and across multiple PCs.
Microsoft also introduced several new features for Windows Live Photo Gallery, including photo fusing to blend photos together and improved facial recognition. Download: Windows Live Essentials 2011 Download: Windows Live Essentials 2011 Offline installer

I have a feeling my Windows Live Essentilas 2011 is out-dated.
It is because I had been notified for update ( manual update), and when I clicked the popup, I was lead to install Windows Lve Essentials 2011. I cancelled it.
It is because I already have WLEssentials 2011.
It happened at least 3 times. That led me to wonder if my WL Essentials 2011 is outdated.

As far as I know, my WL Essentials 2011 is .... 15.4.3502.0922

Now as I googled , I found there were at least 2 different versions :

Someone please enlighten me.

Hello, I've recently set up a home server running WHS 2011 (the server in my signature) and wanted to get some input from the Forum on add in's.

This server will be used to store pictures, stream music and videos. I will access the server from my desktop PC, laptop and remotely. I will probably use Stable Bit for drive pooling. Other than that I'm not sure what, if any additional add in's to use. I've done a couple of google searches for "WHS 2011 add in's", but wanted to get some suggestions from people here that have used various add in's. Thanks in advance.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium and it is 64 bit. I have been trying to install an update titled "Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419)" since 19/10/2010 when it was released but I have been unable to, because as soon as I try to do the update I get the message "Error(s) found: Code 800401E4. Windows Update encountered an unknown error".

I have been searching for a solution to this error for months by trawling through other discussions online but have found nothing of use. I really want to get rid of this annoying message. Other updates that have come after this do not work either ("Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows Vista for x64-based systems", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467175)", "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2467174)").

Something else of note is that there is also an optional update entitled "Realtek driver update for Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller" that will not update either. In any combination of these updates (either both or either one of them selected) the update does not work and the same error message is given.

I was suggested to uninstall Windows Live and reinstall, but this brought to light a different problem: the "Uninstall" feature of the control panel does not appear to be working as whenever I try to click on ANYTHING on that list (be it Wi... Read more

Hi, I just downloaded the upgraded Windows Live Mail Essentials 2011 and now when I send a link by e-mail it will not open. The Windows Live mail I had before was fully functional. I can open links sent to me by other others, but when I send a link to myself or out to a friend we cannot open it. I have checked on the IE8 defaults settings and they are OK. I fixed the 'page' area so that the 'send link by e-mail' are no longer greyed out (that had disappeared after the upgrade). Thank you for any help you can provide.

Update to post- I have found the answer. I found a post that said just to hit the enter key after the link before sending the e-mail. The link lights up and it's active. So now it works.

I'm using Windows 7 SP1 Ultimate edition, and every app I installed is working. But when I go to the Windows Live website, I can't download windows live essentials! When I click on "Download now" browser just keeps loading and loading but nothing happens. Tried with Chrome and IE, and I got same result.
Then, I got an idea - I have copied wlsetup-web.exe file from my laptop to the USB flash memory, and then tried installing. File runs, but I can't get farther than "Prepairing the installation" because I got some error which say that I'm not connected to the Internet, although I am.

Anyone have this problem?

A new build (Build 15.4.3508.1109 ) of Windows Live Essentials 2011 has been released today. It’s a QFE (Quick Fix Engineering) update, that is to say, this build is for bug fixes and not UI changes.
This release updates all Essentials 2011 apps from Build 15.4.3502.0922 to Build 15.4.3508.1109 except Windows Live Mesh and Windows Live Family Safety
You can get this build from Windows Live Essentials 2011 - Download free Microsoft programs as web installer .
And you can get the Offline Installer from Its size is 209 MB (English language ).
Though the web installer and offline installer version shows 15.4.3502.0922 but when you run this, it’ll prompt you for the upgrade to new build. Here, I can confirm as of now only for English ver.
For other language offline installer please check here. PLEASE NOTE that I have tried only the English offline installer and other language installer may not be updated yet as there’s no official announcement from Microsoft.
As said this build being QFE, fixes bugs but the complete changelog has not been made available yet. I’ll be posting as I come across any changes in various Live Apps.
One of the bug this QFE fixes is in Live Writer. It fixes the AltGr shortcut issue for European Keyboards in Windows Live Writer

Answer:Problems updating Windows Live Essentials 2011

I'm probably off base but my understanding is that the 2011 is HD capable. I ran MS Updates about a week ago and all was well. After installing, having log-in issues and uninstalling, I removed all I could find of Essentials, ran registry Mechanic and, after restart, ran MS Updates, for gigggles, and found updates for both video and audio chip-sets (drivers, I suppose) and a couple of others.

Maybe you could try MS Update and see what you find.

Just a thought from between my ears.

I have been using windows live mail for sometime since going to win7. I used to use Outlook xpress but guess can't use that anymore (which always worked fine for me). Anyway, I haven't really liked live mail and now that they have downloaded windows live essentials, I can't get into my live email account without it asking me to sign in to the account. When I use my usual sign in it denies access. I would like to use another email program. Long way of asking, can I use Thunderbird on my Dell using my other old email address @verizon that I used on windows live mail??? If so, I will then delete windows live essentials - I don't want messenger and social networking and all that stuff that I could care less about that seems to be a big part of this program. Thanks for your help.

So, I was trying to add a component to Windows Live Essentials on a computer in my office and was unable to do so. It comes up and says "Preparing for Install", but doesn't seem to ever do anything.

I suspected at first it was a result of some Windows updates that I approved yesterday for install from WSUS, but there are people in my office who didn't get the updates yet and they too are having problems.

If somebody could try, just launch the installer and see if you can get anywhere or if you just hang.

Eventually, I got an error saying my "internet connection was not working". But my Internet is up and working just fine.

Occasionally you come up against a brick wall where Live Essentials ceases to work and you are in the unenviable position of neither being able to install or uninstall.
So I've made a list up of all the Live Essentials Installers/Uninstallers associated with Live Essentials 2011.
By copying and pasting the relevant "Msiexec /x{08234a0d-cf39-4dca-99f0-0c5cb496da81}" string into an Elevated Command Prompt and hitting Enter you will be able to uninstall the uninstallable.
Through this link to MediaFire is a text and pdf file. There is also a .bat file which will, with a double click, commence the uninstallation of everything that Live Essentials installed.

So I noticed today that WLE 2011 was released and decided to give it a shot.

Anyone here a mail essentials user? I updated from the older version and noticed it has that Outlook 2010 look and feel, which is nice but the junk mail filter is annoying me. In the old version all mail that was not in my safe list went to junk mail now it seems like 2011 is ignoring my lists and just sending all mail into my inbox with the exception of my hotmail account. For example I do get mail that I want to view but still prefer it to go in my junk mail. For example job search engine results and random news letters from ebay or amazon. I had this same issue with the beta and didn't care to fix it but now that WLE 2011 is out of beta I figure it was time to find a solution if one exists.

Recently I installed an update for Windows Live Essentials 2011 (KB2434419), which came with a 'new look' version of Hotmail - Windows Live Mail 2011.

Since then I've had nothing but annoying issues with Hotmail, and it's settings and configurations. Issues which at times have caused parts of it to close down, and which have also created merry hell with the text of the emails.

First of all was this crazy warning message, which appeared each time I opened my Hotmail account:

A check of Problems Reports and Solutions showed that I was experiencing a major difficulty - an APPCRASH with Hotmail, but I didn't have a clue about how to fix it. This is the View of the Problem Details;

After considering the problem and the impasse that I was faced with, I decided to do the following in an attempt to create a 'workaround' of the problem, and to hopefully resolve the issues I was having;

1. I did a System Restore, back to the Restore Point immediately before I had downloaded and installed the latest Windows Updates, including KB2434419 - Update for Windows Live Essentials 2011, of which Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] is only one part.

2. After the Restore Point had been confirmed and my Laptop restarted [Rebooted] I then confirmed with a search of Windows Update, that KB2434419 was ready to reinstall to the Laptop. The Update for Windows Live Mail [Hotmail] was successfully reinstalled.

This method seems to have fixed the APPCRASH issues described above, because the Hot... Read more

Answer:Latest Windows Live Essentials 2011 Update [KB2434419] has corrupted Hotmail accounts

I've downloaded the full Windows Live Essentials 2011 and Windows Live Mail is a totally separate application from my Hotmail account (at least it is for me). Although my Hotlook account looks a little different, it is essentially the same as it has always been with a few more options (when accessed through the Bing Toolbar which is how I do it). It does NOT open Windows Live Mail 2011. It goes instead to my online Hotline account which is perfectly fine.

Were you previously using a prior version of Windows Live Mail or Windows Mail as the client for your Hotmail account instead of just using the direct online version? Have you tried going to the online version of Hotmail and checking if things are mucked up there or if that's only in Windows Live Mail? I suspect the problem is with Windows Live Mail and not with Hotmail.

I hope this helps. Let me know, and we'll see what we can come up with to fix the problem. Maybe you should consider uninstalling the update and see if that fixes the problem (unless you think that cured the larger problem). In either case, then maybe the best thing to do would be to seek help in the Windows Live Mail Forums where they know a lot more about it than we do.

Good luck!

Is the bare metal backup the easiest way to transfer it to another computer?

Answer:Easiest way to transfer Windows SBS 2011 to new hardware?

I've had no issues migrating Windows 2008 Server and 2008 R2 server from one machine to another if your are dealing with typical consumer hardware and aren't trying to change boot device types by just plugging the drives into the other machine.

I've had installs I've moved from AMD to Intel and back with no issues.

Ususally its just boot once or twice to detect all the changes hardware, re-activate, and go on your way. If you are booting from something attached to a Perc controller or something like that, you'd have to move the controller from the old machine to the new one. But if you are just using on-board SATA, just make sure the new board is configured for the same mode "IDE" or "AHCI" as the old board and go on your way.

Just make sure the boot drive is first in the boot order of any hard drives listed on the new machine.

uySounds like your system needs more ram because its pushing itself to the limit. I see you have 8gb; however it appears that is not sufficient to power the graphics card. I would up the amount of ram thats in your system and see if that does anything. Also; as for the temps; take the fan off the cpu and make sure the thermal paste hasnt degraded. The reason i say that is thats what happened to me about a week or so ago. The temp of my cpu was spiking to dangerous temps. I had to replace the processor anyways so at the same time i put new thermal paste on the heat sink and that took care of the issue; so i would check that as over time the paste degrades from heat.

I have a budget of ~500$, what should I buy for my system? I am planning for some new memory (current 2GB) a new graphic card (curr. GeForce 7600 GT), a new processor (curr. 2Ghz if I remember correctly) and/or a new motherboard (because USB 3.0 is coming).

What should I buy?
Oh, and it should be shippable to Finland.

Hi. It's possible that I may upgrade to a better computer sometime this year and I wanted some suggestions on hardware based on my preferences.

I'm currently running the following:

OS: Windows XP Professional SP3
Motherboard: Asus M2A-VM
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1 GHz
Memory: Crucial 1 GB DDR2 PC2-5300 (667 MHz) x1, Samsung 512 DDR2 MB PC2-5300 (667 MHz) x2
Video Card: ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 256 MB
Power Supply: Ultra 500 W X-Finity

I mostly multitask with Web-browsing, light gaming, office productivity (Word, Ecel, etc), and occasionally an audio player. I frequently find myself with several Notepad, Word, and Excel documents open, as well as 1-2 Firefox browsers with several tabs each open, and occasionally a game and/or audio player running, and that's the kind of situation I'm looking for a computer to be able to handle smoothly and without slowdowns.

I am dissatisfied with my computer's speed when multitasking (even though it has a dual-core processor) as well as graphical glitches like minimizing or closing a window that was overlapping another and the former leaves a blank outline over the window that remains, slow startup (1.5 to 2 minutes cold; my wife's running Vista and her's seems to start up much faster compared to mine) which includes a couple lengthy black screens in between the motherboard screen and Windows XP loading screen and finally to the desktop (I see that as time wasted) - is XP slower than Vista/7 on ... How do you think I would best upgrade a dec. of 1999, here are the specs:

AMD Duron ~800MHz
GeForce 2 MX400 64MB
sound: heck if I know, but everything usually sounds fine, so no worries there
CD drive
CD-RW drive
320MB RAM (I forgot which kind, but it's the newer kind, not DDRAM though... I don't think... =\)
3.5" floppy drive
heck if I know the mobo, or will ever know it.

if you need anymore info ask and I'll try to put it up here if I can find it, and try to keep the prices reasonable, I'm poor, hehe.

I need some help with hardware brand names. I am new to actually worrying about what is going on inside of my computer (instead of just reformating everytime I have a problem) so I need some help on brand names, I know about a few brandnames, but I don't know enough. I don't want to spend any more money than I have to while building my computer. Any brand name suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, lets say ive chosen an Intell pentium 4 3.06 GHz CPU, what kind of motherboard do I need to go along with it? I am completely lost.

If anyone is feeling charitable, my AIM and Yahoo handles are UKpumper, I would appreciate any help.

I'm WAY outa the loop these days as too what is good and what isn't, and what prices are good and what aren't.That being said, I have a tower case, fans, nice hard drive, and a nice DVD drive that have been collecting dust for 5 years with a 500 watt power supply waiting to be finished.I'd like to know what is the best CPU, Motherboard, GCU, and about 4 gigs of ram combo that I can get for this setup keeping in mind that I have about 300 to 400 dollars to spend on all 4 components.Any suggestions would be HUGELY appreciated.  I've tried to troll through information to get up to speed again but I'm soooo far behind what is going on in the computer component world atm, that I just figure I'll ask for suggestions from those who know.

Answer:Need Hardware suggestions pls

On a limited budget, the first question is about the OS.Getting the a 64 bit and 32 bit system can take a lot of your money. If you are not going 64 bit, not much point in going with 4 GB.And if your favorite programs are only 32 bit, there is not much advantage to getting a 64 bit CPU. Unless you someday are going to be rich again.

I have an external fax modem I am trying to add to to our SBS 2011 server. I click on Add a Device and the next step is that is searches for devices. It does not detect anything (not surprising) but also never stops searching. So, I am unable to add it manually.

I have already restarted the server and that did not help.

Any ideas?

Answer:SBS 2011 - Add Hardware Wizard Stops At Searching For Devices

Download the driver from the manufacturers website for the modem. Don't let it search automatically, instead tell it you have a driver disk and show it where you saved the driver.

I am looking into redoing my network setup, and I have some questions.

1. Where do I buy Racks for servers/switches, and where should I buy server cases for these racks?

2. Where can I find rackmount switches? I want it so that I can setup servers on the rack, and have a small, inexpensive switch to connect all the servers to the network.

3. What are some good inexpensive racks/server cases to buy?

Have previously bought the D-link DSL-G604T DWL-G122 bundle pack and then had a nightmare time getting a wireless signal to work. I have now returned that kit and am looking to order something else. After my bad experience with the USB adaptor (I think it was to blame!) I want to get a PCI card and router instead. Any recommendations for which kit is worth it? Should I be wary of mixing makes or does that not matter. Is a PCI card easy to fit (I take it this is my only other choice and will work?)It is for my desktop PC which runs XP Home. Thanks

Answer:Wireless hardware suggestions

try the 3 com wireless bundle which includes a usb dongle. click here have them.By the way i don't think you need a pci router a the one i mentioned above uses your ethernet connection and the usb dongle plugs in to any computer you want to share your internet with.hope this helps

I currently have Win Xp working on my PC which is a P4 2Ghz.It all works well but i would like to know what the most efficient configuration of connecting the hard drives and optical devices should be to the motherboard.Currently my configuration is this:-pri master = 160Gb hard diskpri slave = NEC 3540 DVD drivesec master = 40 GB hard driveSec slave = NEC 3540 DVD driveIs this the best way to connect these devices or is there a more efficient way to get the best performance.

Answer:hardware configuration suggestions please

No Both Hard Drives should be on the same cable with the 160 gb as master. Its because the drives will only run as fast as the slowest on each IDE cable and as the dvd drives are much slower than the hard drives they should be together on the secondary IDE cable

Doing custom build for trial of Linux distros having kernels 2.4.31 to 2.6.29. I will be using AMD processor, and three mobile-rack dedicated hard disk drives (500 to 750GB each). Prefer Nvidia graphics card, if possible (but it must not be 'HDCP-compliant' or 'HDCP-ready'). No Intel or Sony products. Price is not a consideration. Other than these provisos, I'm open to any specific hardware recommendations or general guidance, in choosing components best suited to this build.

hi i'm not sure if this ? should go in hardware or networking, cauz its a bit of both...
anyway ->
i currently have a 2 PC lan (wired router w/ dsl modem) and want to add a laptop to the configuration, but i want it to connect wirelessly and i have a couple of questions.
1. can i keep the current config and add some type of wireless router/switch/something to the wired router in order to communicate with the laptop? or will i have to switch to a wireless router all together? The desktops would be nice to have connected wirelessly, but it's not that important and i realize i would need a wireless pci/(usb?) card for the desktops (extra expense!)
2. i'm thinking about a dell laptop, and want something that has wireless integrated so i dont have to stick a pcmcia card in the laptop, and something at low-mid price range. any suggestions on laptop/card/router/etc?

I have a Dell Dimension 3100, and am looking for ways to speed it up, hardware wise. I have all ready upgraded to 2gb of ram, 32mb cache 320gb hardrive. I also am using Windows 7, as I have found for me it is MUCH faster than XP. I haven't upgraded the CPU or Graphics card. If I upgrade the CPU, I think I have to upgrade the Graphics as well, as it is built in, I think??

I currently have an un-upgraded Celero 3.06Ghz and am on 32bit.

What's the next thing I should do?

Answer:Hardware suggestions to boost PC?

The Celeron is your main problem. It is a major bottleneck in your system. For gaming, you would need a video card upgrade as well, but you can only use a PCI-E x1 card or a PCI card. I recommend a GeForce 6200 PCI card for all-around good performance, but the best possible PCI card right now is the 9400GT PCI.

I would not recommend upgrading that system for gaming though. A new system would be much better suited to that. You can replace the motherboard, CPU, video card and RAM for $300-400. The performance increase compared to upgrading your current system will be very significant.

Presently using a hosted VOIP PBX for company telecoms needs, but they're dropping the ball pretty bad lately, so looking at potentially pulling it back in house.

I've already got around 60 Cisco SPA 504g's w/ SIP firmware, and a few Lifesize teleconferencing systems (H.323), and some polycom IP phones (SIP), as well as sufficient switches, as we're already 100% VOIP. I've got 3 branch offices (two in different states, and our development center/ data center in canada) as well as a dozen or so remote workers that telecomute to do mainly data entry and customer support.
I was thinking of getting something like a Cisco UC560 w/ 1 or 2 PRI's in my datacenter (i don't think i need mroe than 23 lines simultaniously, but might be close, but 47 is overkill) , and have the remote employees and branch offices route VOIP traffic over VPN back to the datacenter. I've got 100Mb EDI here, and bonded T1's (3Mb) at one of the branch offices, and a 5Mb EDI at the other, all offics have HA clusters of Juniper SRX firewalls at the edge.

would also like to look into shoretel, but don't know much about it.

Hi,i'm gonna upgrade my satellite P20-S203 'cause i've got now an unespected budget of 500 euro.
I just would like to have some suggestions.
First of all: is it mad to think changing the motherboard? And if it doesn't sound too crazy, which one(Obviously from toshiba,as it has to fit perfectly with all the rest of the equipement,or if you know any other name that would still fit good into the notebook...).
Second,a REAL sound card, with externals line in & out(yes i do play guitar... :-))),any suggestion is welcome, even if i've got already some names in my mind.
Third,a wireless card,as this model has got a dedicated thought woul be obviously for a toshiba one, what you think?would i have any problem if i chose the 100 Mbit/s one?
That's it,i hope you'll help me decide...any personal experience on the upgrade of this model is really welcome.
Thank you

Answer:Some suggestions for a hardware upgrade on P20-S203

Hello Nerd,

you only can upgrade a few things on a notebook, like memory or HDD. A notebook is not a desktop. The most components are specially designed for one model and they don't fit in any other model.

So I'm sorry to say that you can't upgrade your motherboard and sound card.

But you can put a wireless card in your laptop.
WiFi Standard 802.11b
The best way is to buy it from a Toshiba service partner. There you get the right card.

Hope this was helpful.

My computer, although was fast in the past, is getting old (~2-4 years... can't remember).

I think some of the hardware is getting old and 'broken'.
Video card is going out I think. Ram as well. Maybe CPU.

I can not tell though.

Might just be a virus.
I need to either replace the faulty hardware while simultaneously upgrading some things, or determine if it would be better to just get a new computer.

There is a game coming out (hopefully soon (SWTOR)) and I will need my computer to be in better operating condition than it is now. I am certain I will upgrade the video card but if everything else needs to be replaced too then I will just get a new computer and upgrade the video card in it...
I do not know how to determine what is faulty though.

Is there a tool (benchmark type thing) that can test my hardware to see if it is getting old and needs to be replaced?

Any suggestions?

Answer:Suggestions on how to determine what hardware needs to be replaced?

You could start by posting the details of the problem or problems you're having. If your video card, RAM, and processor were all broken, your computer wouldn't even power on.

Viruses are software problems and can either be fixed with software and configuration changes, or they can definitely be fixed by reinstalling Windows. Viruses don't damage hardware, and replacing hardware won't fix a virus problem.

I need to play games on a basic HP Pavilion 753n Comp. Nothing yet has been upgraded, I want a new motherboard for under 100$, one that can support the following (which is also wanted):

RAM-US Modular Cold Fusion Dual Channel 2048MB PC8500 DDR2 1066MHz Memory (2 x 1024MB)
this is a link to the page with the RAM I would like to have ""

Processor-3.0Ghz or higher.

Video Card- at least 512mb, not for modeling, but games.
Hopefully I can keep this around 300$ (excluding the processor, so only adding RAM, Motherboard, and Videocard)

I AM NOT AN EXTREME GAMER so I do not want top of the line hardware.

Thanks so much!

Anyway, I'm looking to do some gaming, not really high graphic demanding games but decent. Id like for some good advice on hardware upgrades, Ive listed my system specs below. I think i need a new graphics card ,but im not sure seeing as Ive never play a game on this computer.

Motherboard: ASUStek Model:Salmon Chipset: HPSIS760 Anthlon 64
Processor: AMD Sempron(tm) Processor 3000+
Graphics Card: SIS 760
OS: Windows XP Service Package 3

Let me know if any other information is needed to make the suggestions.

Answer:Computer hardware suggestions for gaming

Assuming your PC has a PCI-Express slot you could upgrade the graphics but you may also need to upgrade your power supply and your CPU is pretty low end so you want to find a video card that would match the CPU.

What's your budget for upgrades? What games do you want to play?

Hey everyone, I have a Compaq SR5050NX desktop with Vista Premium. Here's a link to the specs:

I want to know what I should look to upgrade first to improve overall loading times and performance for everyday stuff. I just want my browser to run a bit faster and programs to load faster. I also play some games like WarRock. Basically just upgrade the performance. I know by the computer performance utility that my graphics power is the weakest part, so would I want to do that first, since I know Vista can take up a lot of video memory resources? If someone could suggest some hardware I should get that will boost the performance, I'd be thankful.

Hello all,

I was wondering if you could give me some suggestions on a hardware-based firewall? I don't want to spend more than $30 or so. I use a cable modem currently.

Thanks for the suggestions!!

Answer:Hardware Based Firewall Suggestions?!

Your gonna have to spend a bit more then that to get a decent firewall.

That being said, the routers from NetGear, D-Link and Linksys would do a good job with their basic firewalls. I have a Wireless Linksys WRT54g with newest firewall firmware and it kicks ass.
