Windows DLL Search Order

Question: Windows DLL Search Order

Hey everyone, I apologize in advance if I won't be able to answer all of your questions, but I'll try my best. I'm not an Active Directory Administrator, but I know a little.

Currently in our Windows Server 2003 environment, our users were experiencing slow response times on certain applications. It wasn't until we noticed that our consultants didn't have the same issue, and we traced it to the fact our users have a Home Profile set that maps an H:\ drive to their home folder.

All of our corporate systems are housed in a hosting facility and the users use clients installed on terminal servers there to access those applications. So when a user is logged into those terminal servers, their home folder will be across the WAN and the response times will be very slow at times (depending on users internet traffic and other things).

We think the issue is a Windows problem with DLL Search Order, but we can't pinpoint the resolution.

The way we determined this was by running ProcessMon from SysInternals and view what was going on. When we launched the application, it was searching for a particular DLL (XYZ.DLL, for instance). In ProcessMon, you would see a bunch of lines where the result was "NAME NOT FOUND", but the order looked something like this:

1 - Folder where Executable was launched
2 - C:\Windows\system32\xyz.dll
3 - C:\Windows\system\xyz.dll
4 - C:\Windows\xyz.dll
5 - H:\Windows\xyz.dll
6 - Folder where Executable was launched (again?)
7 - C:\Windows\system32\xyz.dll
8 - C:\Windows\xyz.dll
9 - C:\Windows\system32\wbem\xyz.dll
10 - etc

Starting at line 7, everything starts matching what's defined in our PATH environment variable. According to this, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms682586(VS.85).aspx, we have SafeDllSearchMode enabled.

So the problem appears as though in a Windows Terminal Server environment, it also looks on the home directory for the user as specified in Active Directory.

We know a fix is to either disconnect that drive or specify a Terminal Services Profile in Active Directory to the local path, but we would prefer to do neither. We would like to keep the users Home Directory, but achieve better performance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

So where actually is the dll? I would say put the DLL in a place such that it would be found near the top of the list, before it even attempts to go to the H:

When I search in Windows 10 using file explorer the results first shows items from my "H" drive and then my "G" drive and then my "F" drive and then my "C" drive last. How can I get the results from my "C" drive to appear first? I know how to sort my results, I just want to be able to SEE my "C" drive before the other drives.
Thanks

Answer:Windows Search Results Order

Right click on the explorer window. View > Sort by > Name.
It will change the sorting order. If it is ascending, it will be descending and vice-versa.

My explorer window ... normally .... After View > Sort by > Name, it appears as .... Hope it helps.

The Windows Photo Viewer will not display photos in the order they are sorted by Windows Explorer.
This is not referring to the slide show feature, just the forward and back arrows.
The only order pictures can be viewed is by name despite Windows Explorer being set at view by date, ascending.
I have repaired Microsoft Live Essentials, uninstalled and reinstalled but the issue remains.
This is also not an issue with photo tags or photo names.
Windows Explorer sorts as selected but click a picture in the middle to view, click the forward arrow and instead of the next date picture being viewed, the next name picture is viewed.

Answer:Windows Photo Viewer; sorting order not the same as view order

Hi!

I upgraded to Windows 10 recently as well, I have the same problem and I also have a solution. However, I do not know, if it is ideal. :-)

What is obviously missing is an entry in the registry called DropTarget. This entry tells Windows Photo Viewer to display the images in the sorting order of the folder Photo Viewer got called from.

Non-solution:
I saw that at least in my registry there is a DropTarget defined in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\photoviewer.dll\shell\open\DropTarget. From the name of the key and from reading the docs this looks as if it would be applied to all calls to this program, but -if that actually is the case- for me this entry does not work. It has been there (at least) after my Windows 10 upgrade, also the "Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A}" seems to be fine, but it does not do the job.

Solution:
For me, this problem was present for jpg and png files, but not for bmp, dib, gif, jfif and what else can be opened with Windows Photo Viewer. To fix this, I have added the following to the Windows Registry:

Code:
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\jpegfile\shell\open\DropTarget]
"Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A}"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\pngfile\shell\open\DropTarget]
"Clsid"="{FFE2A43C-56B9-4bf5-9A79-CC6D4285608A}"

I have 400+ photos, all are in the same order by date created and by name, so no matter which way I sort them--by name or date created-- they are in the same order. When i view them with microsoft office picture manager, some of them -- about 20, at random throughout the list -- are out of order.

Question: DLL Search Order

I'm trying to understand about dll search order and avoid the DLL Hell. I have found these MS articles:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q164501

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnsetup/html/dlldanger1.asp

If I understand correctly, any 32-bit dll listed in the KnownDLLs will be searched in the winnt\system32 directory first. Are the dlls listed in the KnownDLLs always the same in one OS? Among different OS?

I don't quite understand how to implement the version-specific approach.

I have found the following article and make this dll search order more confusing:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dncode/html/secure06122003.asp

Thank you for any help.

Answer:DLL Search Order

If the DLL is listed in KnownDLLS's it first searchs in winnt\system32, if it is not in the KnownDll entry then it looks in the program directory.

This method applies to Windows NT/2000/XP.

The entries in the KnownDLL's may change per operating system. The key is designed so that people cant create dll's of the same name that supercede dll's needed by the OS. By putting an entry into the KnownDLL field, the operating systemknow it is using the DLL that it wants, unless it has been overwritten.

I'm trying to right this function, and its almost complete, my only problem is the condition when it hits the largest value in the tree, what should it return?

this is my function prototype;

TreeNode<T>* next_inorder( TreeNode<T>* p );

if the node p has a right node, then it goes all the way left down that right node to find the next in order.

if the node p has no right node, it goes one node up to the left, and then all the way up the right to the find the next in order.

my problems are what about the case where p is the only node in the tree, and what about when p is the last in order node??

Hi Sphinx,

Each node of a binary tree has a value field and a left and right link field. Given that the binary tree has been created with a prodecure that inserts the value node of the tree in the correct place and correctly links left, and right nodes then the tree is completely ordered, i.e. smallest value at the leftmost node, and largest value at the rightmost node.

A function can then be created to retrieve the max value node's "value", and likewise, a separate function to retrieve the least value node's "value". OTOH, while inserting the "value nodes", the smart thing to do is to construct a header node for the binary tree, with two extra pieces of information in the header node which no value node contains. Those pieces of information are: (min value, ptr to min value node), (max val... Read more

Hi

How do I get the search box "search programs and files" (i.e. the one above the Start button) to sort the results within each section by DATE, rather than by name?

Note I do NOT mean the search top right in Windows Explorer, which fwiw, is already working nicely in date order!

Clue:
I have installed Classic Shell but I read a thread saying that it wont have touched this.

J
EDIT: I am told that the files listed are ranked partly by frequency of use. And I am now wondering is this is data which my CCleaner utility is deleting. Either way the sort order have become VERY much less useful in the last couple of weeks. Any thoughts?

Answer:How can I change sort order for "Search Programs and files" results?

Hi,I've an approved RMA for full refund for an X230 that I'd purchased from Depot. The restocking fee was waived as I'd ordered another X230 (better EPP deal).I shipped back the unopened X230 and Lenovo acknowledged the receipt of the laptop on Feb 5. And since then there has been no update on my refund. I was told it would take 6 business days for the refund to be posted back to my account. Now it's over 2 weeks and when I contacted post sales support - this is the reply I got from them: *************Hi,We regret to inform you that i am unable to get any information on this order, I am still working on your order. Once we get the information on the refund i will keep you updated on the same For further assistance please feel free to email me back and i will be glad to assist you Regards *************So what are my options now. An answer like "i am unable to get any information on this order" from customer care themselves doesn't really inspire confidence with Lenovo. The second X230 that I'd ordered, has issues with the IPS display having a yellow tint and the touchpad being super jumpy. Had sent it to their repair center who unfortunately were not able to see the problems at first but later accepted the problem with the touchpad alone and they're getting the laptop re-imaged. Display is as designed according to them. They're sending it back now. Will wait and see. If I still see the display problem, will get it returned. Thank you Lenovo, for that amazing buyi... Why does it say that I will receive the laptop 2 weeks from now when it says that I should expect it within 1-3 days?

Answer:Dell site says XPS 15 gets delivered in 1-3 days, the order date for my order is 2 weeks from now...

Generally when that happens there has been a burst of orders, or there is a part on back order and the sales site hasn't been updated yet.  The delivery times are just estimates and could be sooner or later depending on various conditions.

This is my Order Number: 2FFVLJI've always owned a Thinkpad for the past 10 years and am a staunch Thinkpad fan.  The R60 and Z60m have been reliable and faithful companions.  I have been recommending Thinkpad to my colleagues and friends.  Hence when I needed a new laptop, I went directly to lenovo's site and ordered a T510 (Web Special) on 4th August 2010 using a valid credit card.  For two days the status was "in process".  On Aug 6th, I was unable to login in usng the cust no and order no to see the status.  When I called the sales customer service, I was informed that the order was cancelled from lenovo's side.  They pointed me to the credit card department for further information.  When I called the credit card department, they claimed information mismatch as the reason for the cancellation but they could not point out what exactly was the mismatch.  I can assure you that the card is valid.  Currently I'm not able to place another order for the same model from lenovo's site as it is no longer available.  This is very regretful as I was really looking forward to getting my laptop of choice.  I tried calling the sales dept but they are not available as it is weekend now (everyone needs a break )  So I have emailed them for help.  I'm yet to get a response.  This has been a nail biting experience.  I'm anxiously waiting for the response from the sales dept.   Will it be possibl... Hello!
First I'm happy to found a way, if Search don't react.
If I stop the service 'Windows Search' I have the items in File Explorer.
(Restart of the service often brings no result, it works, only if I stop the service .)
Is there a easier way to get find results?
This with 8.1 Prof 64 bit

Answer:Windows Search in File Explorer brings results, if I stop Windows Search service

Now with Windows 10 Windows Search works for me.
The specialty on my configuration was and is,
that data like documents and pictures are located
on the conventional hard drive. Other files are on SSD.
It was necessary to release the folders normally used from ?quick access? in file explorer and to add the really used data folders.
To have also the common access to the data folders I created  junctions with
e.g.
cd /D C:\Users\mine
mklink  /J  Pictures  H:\Users\mine\Pictures
But normally, now I use the items of the newly configured ?quick access? in file explorer.

Thanks all for communicate

I've upgraded my T440 to Windows 10 and the latest mousepad driver seems to be giving me issues. With the Synaptics driver 19.0.17.27 installed, trying to select a new window to make it top most will often fails. That window will hide behind other windows. If I try to uninstall the Synaptics driver once, the window z-order issue will be fixed, but the driver is like half uninstalled and most mousepad function will no longer work (2 finger stroll, right click, button press)  The input cursor will also jump around too while I tried to type. Is Lenovo aware of this issue? I think I've seen another person in another forum mention this.  This is becoming quite frustrating for me.

Alt + Tab order runs in order of most recently used (MRU) to least recent.  I want to change this order to a static order that I opened each program.
Example:  I open program 1, 2, 3, 4.  If I'm on window #1, I alt+tab, I go to window #2, I alt+tab again I go to window #1, I alt+tab, again I go to window #2.  From what I read this is called most recently used (MRU) order.
I would like to start on window #1, alt+tab, go to window #2, alt+tab, go to window #3, alt+tab, go to window #4.  I have no idea what this is called and thus searching for an answer is hard.

Please and thank you.
Also hotkeys/macros might be a work around but I don't know how to set that up and the total number of open windows is variable...

Dear MS support,
I have the following situation and really appreciate if you can provide any guidelines. I'm working on a windows machine with two adapters. Will try to summarize it here :
1- NIC#1 has ipv4 only enabled and it has one dns server. Plus a default domain name of test.com.
2- NIC#2 has both ipv4 and ipv6 enabled. Plus a default domain name of test.com. [there are a valid ipv6 dns server too].
3- All the interfaces has the following dns suffixes enabled :
hyari1.com
hyari2.com

Problem
=====

When i try to resolve a name without a domain. I get the following behavior :
1- First i see an ipv4 dns query on NIC#1 to the name appended with the domain test.com and i get no such name for that one which is expected.
2- Instead of trying the next dns suffixes on that interface i see that the dns resolver jumps to the ipv6 dns server on NIC#2 . And here is my Problem, why it didn't continue to resolve all the suffixes on NIC#1 .

Please notice that in the binding order. NIC#1 appears before NIC#2.

is this expected and why ?

Moh.

We have until July 11 or so to pre-order Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional for about 1/2 price ($50 and $99 respectively). Which version would you put on your s10?When I look at the feature comparisons it looks like Windows XP mode probably is the only thing I'd use from Professional that Home Premium doesn't have. Or is there other stuff in Professional that they aren't mentioning?ggeinecMessage Edited by ggeinec on 06-28-2009 12:21 PM

Answer:Windows 7 pre-order

As far as I know the Windows XP mode (Windows Virtual PC) requires the virtualization technology Intel VT or AMD-V. The N270 does not support this feature and therefore it should not work on the S10. The Professional Edition also features the offline files for network shares, for my opinion a necessary function for mobile devices. Anyone else?  Greetings Carsten

Windows 7 - search in Windows Explorer - I?m trying to do a search in file contents for 01234 but it also finds files with 1234.

How do I do I get it to search for files with exactly 01234?

The search is ignoring the leading zero.

I opened Windows Explorer and use the search box in the upper right hand corner. I?ve entered:
01234
?01234?
?01234?
contents:01234
contents:?01234?
contents:?01234?

It finds files with 01234 but also returns files with just 1234 in it.

I am a little confused about which version of Windows 7 professional to buy as far as 32 bit and 64 bit. I would like the 64 bit but Is It compatible with my computer? and how can I tell?, I know I am running 32 bit right now, But the Million dollor question Is can I run 64 bit on It. I would like the Windows 7, 64 bit so I can load my Computer up with maximum ram. I am running a duel core processor so It should be compatible with 64 bit, One other question Is When I go to the website to pre-order Windows 7 I do not see an option to buy 64 bit, So what are you getting when you want to order a version, 32 bit or 64?. I  am assuming the standard Buy Is 32 bit.

Answer:Another Windows 7 pre order question.

1. Quick way to check your processor to see if it's 64 bit (should be, but won't hurt to check anyway)...download SecurAble program from this link ... http://www.softpedia.com/progDownload/SecurAble-Download-73409.htmlRun it, and if you see it says "64 Maximum Bit Length", then you are able to run 64 bit windows. 2. I'd like to know what website you are planning to preorder windows 7 from. Anyway... According to the FAQ via this link ... http://www.microsoft.com/windows/buy/offers/pre-order-faq.aspx, Microsoft says that "You?ll get both. Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional packaged products include both 32- and 64-bit discs. " So ou'll get the 32 bit and the 64 bit versions of windows in one package  and you can just install whatever edition that you want (and are able to)

Hard Drive Order: (I have them setup in port order; port 0, port 1, port 2, etc....)

All HD are SATA and IDE is disable in the BIOS.

BIOS: AHCI

After Win 7 installation, I see port 0(Raptor 150gb) as C:\ because that s where I install Win 7 onto. However, Port 1 is E:\, Port 2 is D:\.

Why is that?
2nd Installation:
BIOS: RAID
After Win 7 installation, I see port 0(Raptor 150gb) as C:\, port 1 as D:\, port 2 as E:\, etc..
CORRECT!!!
My understanding would be 2nd installation is correct regardless of BIOS being set to IDE, AHCI, or RAID in the BIOS. However, seems Windows 7 wants to do its own way when it's setup for AHCI. I understand Primary partitions comes before logical, but all 5 HDs all have primary partition only.

MB is Asus Rampage.
Any idea why?

Thank You!

Over the past week or so. I've run into a problem that the system on reboot hangs on loading the operating system. The fix
for this issue is to boot the system and hitting the F12 key. This brings up the change boot order menu. Then you just tell it to boot from the first disk and it boots up.

June 26th I went to Microsoft site and from there went to Walmart and pre-ordered 2 copies of the Windows 7 Professional Upgrade for 99.92 each. On the 10th of this month Walmart emails me and tells me that my order has been cancelled. After several emails and phone calls, they tell me that it is their policy to check with the credit card company every 30 days for verification. They tell me that in July they check and am good to go. They check again in August and am good to go. They check again and am denied by my credit card company. I would think that to my credit card company, it would appear that someone has tried to make this same purchase three times in three months and my card company has gotten suspicious.
So in essence, would it appear that because of Walmart's ****ed up policy, this purchase that I had thought was going to cost me 200.00 is now going to cost twice that.

Anyone else had this lousy experience with this lousy outfit....just curious?

Answer:Windows 7 Pre-order from Walmart.com

No, but I'm sure there are more ppl than you who have maxed out there credit card. And you know the business can not charge the CARD until they can verify the product has/can be shipped. That is to protect you as well as the shipper. In this case Walmart.
Last time I checked you can still PRE-Order from Several 3rd party org over the internet... under the same they can not charge until they can SHIP.

I thought the $99.00 release was the DOWNLOAD version.
guess I was wrong.

Windows sees the order based on the Boot Order in BIOS.

Amazon has Windows 7 on Pre order as you may know. I have already pre ordered the Pro version for ?89 (price went up now) but today i saw this:

"Customers who buy an eligible copy of Windows Vista from Amazon.co.uk between 26th June and 15th October 2009 [ame="http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html/ref=amb_link_84386313_1?ie=UTF8&docId=1000321063&pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=special-node-offers-3&pf_rd_r=1ZMDJ1T9KQJ22XM47DXW&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_p=470482053&pf_rd_i=B002DUCMTC"]are eligible for a free copy of the equivalent version of Windows 7[/ame] when it is launched. Now if you read closely you'll see that the equivalents for Windows 7 Ulti are:

According to amazon.co.uk again, if i buy Vista Ulti today (full) that would cost me ?166.53 and if i buy the upgrade version of Vista Ulti that's ?151.46.

As you know Windows 7 E Ultimate in Europe comes FULL (meaning no upgrade package available and also that's stated on amazon) so that means i can buy the upgrade version of Vista Ulti and on Oct 22th amazon.co.uk wil... Read more

Answer:Windows 7 Pre-Order from Amazon.co.uk

Firstly, the only difference between 'upgrade' and 'full' versions is that with the 'upgrade' version you need a prior installation or DVD to install. (There are even ways round that.)
Secondly, if the free upgrade to 7 for Vista buyers is anything like what I went through with XP and Vista then I wouldn't bother. It will almost certainly be done by agents of MS through a voucher scheme, and last time it took quite a few months after Vista was released for the DVD to be delivered.

Windows search is not able to search the content of pdf files when searching more than 4 digit number. I have pdf files in a folder when I try to search a content eg 7349, it shows the files which are having this number but if I increase the digits to one more e.g 73495, the result is blank. I have already indexed these files. There is no problem if text files are searched. Please advise.

I am not searching in open files. I am searching the folder of pdf files.

Add_ It is a domain pc. Is it possible that it could be some policy.

Answer:windows search not able to search content of pdf when search more

Hello, I'm not absolutely sure which you mean. However- I think you need the solution shown at the end of this post.

1. I think you mean if the text in the pdf file contains 4578, then that text can be found, but 45783 cannot?
And when you do this, is your search string 4 or 5 characters?

2. How are you searching - are you using search in file explorer, or the Cortana search field?

Please note your post (and the other one) are marked as 'Solved' for some reason.

My initial observation (noting the ifilter in the screenshot below):
Using file explorer search on a text-based pdf I would agree that numeric strings do not seem to be found as you'd expect. For example, of the string 765 which I added to a file, and which was indexed, 76 was found, but not 765. (I also added 7654 and 76543).

However, when I converted that pdf to txt, the strings were found correctly.

Similarly, text (which could be found in the file when open in an editor) was not found correctly by Windows search. E.g. Amb was found, but not Ambassador, whereas a windows search of the txt file worked.

How I fixed this:
I downloaded a pdf ifilter:
Adobe - Acrobat : For Windows : PDF iFilter 64 11.0.01
and installed it

Windows Phone 8.1 Bing Image Search Broken by not correctly displaying larger image of thumbnails of any images not in the first group of searched images.
So if you search balloons in Windows Phone you find images of balloons, and in the first group if you click any thumbnail of an image the larger image of that thumbnail shows correctly.
But if you go to the second group of images, under the other suggested search topics links seen at the bottom of the first group of images all the thumbnails are there displayed of the second group of images, but if you click one it incorrectly displays the corresponding image from the next group of images down as the larger thumbnail.
Meaning if in the upper left of the 2nd group of images I pick the very first thumbnail image and click it, instead of showing the larger image I expect [like it does with the first group of searched images] it shows the larger images of another thumbnail, it shows the first image in the upper left of the third group of images as the larger thumbnail.
So its off... The images are not properly synchronized. Only in the first group of searched images are the thumbnail and the larger images synchronized. The only way to find the larger image is to select the last thumbnail image in the first group, and when it displays start to scroll through all the images full size one at a time. That really sucks! This just broke the day after Robin Williams dies. Prior to that it worked perfectly for all thumbnails.

PROBLEM: Whenever I do a search for something from the start menu what I want does not show up. When I click see more results on the start menu search box it opens a new Window, remembers my search term and searches in the favorites folder. ALWAYS. Needless to say what I am looking for does not show in results when windows searches in favorites.

So I click on Drive C icon and it goes to drive C but clears my search term from the search box in that nbewly opened window. After I type my search again into the search box in the previously mentioned newly opened window, THEN the computer will finally find what I am looking for.

QUESTION: When I do a search from the start menu and click see more results to open the new window, how can I make the computer to search in the C drive instead of favorites?

I had a probem with my Toshiba Satellite from 2002 with the Windows XP Search Companion Search Result Window (the one with the animated dog in the corner) popping up randomly, causing screen to flicker, when you tried to closed it just kept opening more and more of the same window. Would not let you access it or anything. I had my OS reinstalled Dec 2008 and it worked fine until now, then just started up again. This laptop is used by my Mom just to play the card games it comes with from Win XP, not internet access, no flash drive useage etc. So virus, malware etc could not be the problem. This time I decided to reinstall the recovery disks (3) myself. First I removed and reinstalled the ram memory card and the harddrive. I also lifted the front of the laptop 2" and let drop to the desk (in case a key was stuck) Then did Toshiba reinstall, so harddrive was reformatted etc., BUT, the little dog just persisted in appearing over & over. I went on line and found a few suggestions. I followed this persons suggestion: http://www.peeniewallie.com/2006/01/disable_search.html
and disabled search companion, there are other areas in the registry to disable also, but I went with this way.
Whatever was causing this problem is now corrected. I figured that if you disable the window using search companion with the little dog the problem could not occur. You can still use search though. I read somewhere on the internet that the little animated dog can become corrupt... Read more

Hello,
Can someone tell me some specifics and pinpoint the differences (or maybe a good website) that would pinpoint the differences between the Windows 7 search and the outlook 2007 search? I know the outlook search searches through email but are there other difference I am overlooking between the two? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Windows 7 search files and folders vs Outlook 2007 search

Hi and welcome to the forum.
This is like trying to compare chalk and cheese!
Instant Search helps you to quickly find items in Microsoft Office Outlook 2007. The Instant Search pane is always available in all of your Outlook views, such as Mail, Calendar, and Contacts.
The Windows 7 search facility will search everything on your computer depending on the parameters you set in the indexing system.

Answer:Fresh Reinstall order Windows 7

Hi ,

Welcome To Lenovo Community

You have to install RAID drivers before switching to RAID in the bios
For installing windows you have to include Intel Rapid Storage driver on intall.
http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?agr=Y&ProdId=2101&DwnldID=21730&ProductFamily=Chips...
Download and extract the
f6flpy-x64.zip (for 64bit windows)
or
f6flpy-x86.zip (for 32bit windows)
in a folder on the flash drive.
When installing try advanced mode and load drivers button. Search the folder on the flash where you have extracted the files, and after that you should see the hard disk in the installer.

Is there anyhow possible to control Windows 7 file name sort order?
When I run vlc player on my Windows 7 PC files are sorted CD2,CD3,cd1 while Windows explorer sorts same sequence cd1, CD2, CD3.
Because Vlc Player uses different sort order, it's a great mess, when there are hundred of files and for example a file North123.... may be several screens before north124....
File names have been created by other users on different systems and there it is not possible to standardize anything between names and computers.
Results have been accidental data loss, when comparing and deleting identical content in file groups.
Any suggestions please?

Vlc support couldn't understand the problem and didn't provide any progressive ideas in this matter.

Answer:How to control Windows 7 sort order

I'm not sure if FreeCommander XL will be of any help. I have it, however, I have not "told" it how to sort, yet.

Hi,

I was browsing the information regarding pre-ordering Windows 7 in the UK for ?49.99 / ?99.99 and am relatively pleased with such an offer. My concern however is regarding information posted by MS at:

http://emea.microsoftstore.com/UK/Mi...dows-7-Preview

Now I understand that due to the forced use of the E version only a clean install will be possible; with that in mind- why does MS state under system requirements that a genuine version of XP or Vista is required to use this version to perform a clean install of 7?

It states on the page linked that "Operating System:
Must be running a genuine copy of the Windows XP or Windows Vista operating systems."

Now I would like to install this on a PC that doesn't have an OS (well is currently running Linux), so am I not alowed to buy this as I don't have a genuine version of XP or Vista that I'd like to sacrifice? It's left me a little confused. Can this be bought and installed on a PC w/o an OS? Does it actually require a genuine version of xp/vista installed?

Cheers,
Dean

Answer:[SOLVED] Windows 7 (UK) Pre-Order Concern?

themoodude, this is an upgrade option. You have to have an existing installation of XP/Vista to install. That is why it's so cheap! If you want to do an install on a clean system then the price is higher, $199 I believe.

Hi there. I noticed that Windows (even Win 7) loads items in a weird order. For instance it loads an email notifier and a weather notifier before it has loaded the network connections (access to the internet). Is there a way to change that order somewhere? I have looked at MsConfig, but do not see any indication there. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Answer:Can you change Windows 7 boot order?

No doubt there is a reason why Windows chooses to load stuff in a certain order and we would be very foolish to think we can do it better. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Missed out on the early preorder discounts? Popular retailer Newegg.com has listed the OEM prices for Windows 7, which will be offered at less than half what Microsoft will charge for a retail copy.
Newegg hasn't listed any prerequisites for buying the OEM version, such as the purchase of any additional hardware. Past OEM copies have prevented users from taking advantage of Microsoft's support options, however, and the packaging and instructions are usually minimal.

Answer:Want Windows 7 for 50 Percent Off? Order an OEM Copy

Thanks for the post. OEMs do not have support(supposidly)that retail versions have, but I've never had any problems with them and have always used them since '95, and in these times any saving is a saving.

I ordered a windows 7 end user software CD from Amazon last week, but what I received was a system builder CD. what do I do, shall I install it and will it work OK, or send it back, and order the correct one.

Answer:windows 7 order from amozon wrong need help

If you requested and paid for an End User Windows 7 disk that is what you should get. You shouldn't receive an OEM version which I take it is what you have got. DO NOT open it and arrange to return it to Amazon for a replacement.

I have a SSD and a HDD. I installed Windows from a flash drive, so I inserted the flash drive and restarted the computer and entered the BIOS setup. I changed the boot order so Windows would see the flash drive. The OS was successfully installed, and I went back to change the boot order.

What I noticed was that the order was now as follows:
Boot Manager (SSD)
P1 Samsung SSD
P2 ST1000Dm003

I think there's also an external HDD that is listed. With the current order as listed above, Windows starts with no issues. If I change the order, Windows gets to the lock screen and can't proceed past that point. I don't know why the external HDD needs to be listed in the startup. It's just a storage drive; it doesn't have any OS on it.

The OS is on the SSD.

Answer:Windows boot order problem

Post a screenshot of your maximized Disk Management window.

When you installed Windows on the SSD did you have other Hard Drives connected ?
When installing Windows, only the SSD/HD where you are Windows installing to should be connected.
Maybe some of your boot files are installed on the wrong device (Hard Drive) ???

Hi,

I'm migrating computers to windows XP. We're using a windows 2000 domain controller for security purposes and have mapped drives through novell (I'm a semi-lowly tech so I *think* that's what each are for). Anyway, when setting up computers, a few of them after installing novell client 4.83 with the patch persistently give a windows login first, then the novell login. The majority of the computers do what we'd like, namely a novell login that also logs you into the domain/win2k thingy. Is there any way I can make the few rebellious computers have the novell login appear first and do all the work? I've tried reinstalling novell client and looking through various novell, network, and xp services settings and can't seem to turn anything up. Any comments are appreciated.

--Charlene

Answer:windows XP and novell login order

It should be right in your network properties where you can change the priority for which client is used first. Set the primary login for the Novelle client.

I have a new box with my first installation of Win 10 and I am trying to figure out the start menu interface. I downloaded and installed Firefox and the installer package created a start menu shortcut with a name of "Mozilla Firefox". Fair enough, but I am used to having it on a start menu sorted alphabetically with the short name "Firefox". So, I went into c:\programdata\Microsoft\windows\start menu and did a rename, which worked fine.
The problem is that Firefox still sorts in the "M" group as if it was still name Mozilla even though the icon reads Firefox and should, logically, sort with the "F" group. Is there a fix for this?

Answer:Start menu order in Windows 10

I dont think there is a fix for this, but perhaps some one else here may know ...

I've recently installed Virtual Drive 7 and it keeps asking me for the CD anyway. On their tech support site it says that I should change the read order of my CD/DVD drives to make the virtual drive first. They say I can do this in the control panel, but they don't elaborate.

Does anyone know how to access and set the read order of disc drives in Windows XP control panel?

Thanks for your time, StratMan23

1,
11,
12,
13--->19,
2,
20,
21--->29,
3,
30,
etc

I want regular ascending.

If it doesn't, then there's something else wrong.

I have made an order for a USB-Windows 8.1 64-bit Recovery Kit, my card HAS BEEN CHARGED, and I still have not recieved a recipt for the order, NOR can I go through the order status in the hp us store website. This is essential, as I have a 3rd party warranty on this product, and it is already in the process of being repaired of a Hard Drive failure. I cannot very likely get this cost covered with a screenshot of the confirmation that was shown after the order was placed, with only the part name, the cost, and the order number.

I read some guides that tell you to go into your bios when your pc starts up and make sure the cd-rom drive is listed before the hdd in the boot sequence. I did this, but it turns out my reinstallation disc is a dvd. Therefore, it didn't work in the cd-rom drive. I then put it in the dvd rom drive and tryed to get it to detect it first that way, but that didnt work either becase the dvd-rom drive isn't even listed in the boot sequence devices. I'm positive the dvd-rom drive doesn't count under the usb/cd-rom choice as I went into boot setup and tried to make it boot from there, and that did not work. What do I do?

I may be wrong but hit F10 after the BIOS screen flashes and I think that you can select to boot from CD/DVD... I'm not too sure though....

Just got a new laptop with windows 10 pre-installed. When I boot up, Windows always tries to use the disabled Administrator user to sign in first, then tells me it is disabled and proceeds to my user, which has admin privileges. I understand how to enable the hidden admin user, but is there any way to re-order the log-in routine so that it will skip trying to use that disabled admin and go straight to mine? It's a minor annoyance but it adds time to the boot-up. Hope this makes sense. Thanks.

Hello Holerbot6000, and welcome to Ten Forums.

It sounds like you may have Windows set to automatically sign in to the Administrator account at startup. Double check using the tutorial below to make sure that you either turn this off or set it for your account.

As I stated in a previous post, I often work with multiple windows open in XP.On the Taskbar these are arranged left to right in the order they were opened. Does anyone know of a way to rearrange the order of these on the Taskbar.I ask because I often wish to cut and paste repeatedly between two windows and it would be very handy if I could place these next to each other on the Taskbar. As always, any advice would be greatly appreciated.Cheers,Dan.

Try a search for "taskarrange" - small freeware programme that I think will allow you to do what you want to.

For removing windows 8.1 operating system, and in order to install windows 7..
you can follow most resouces online for removing windows 8 (not 8.1) because the largest diverence is in how to access the correct BIOS options as "the menu options have changed".

While in the BIOS Boot menu, you want to change the "Boot Mode" to "Legacy Support" and change the "Boot Priority" to "Legacy First". This will let you bypas the windows 8.1 hardrive boot, and use the cd-rom windows 7 disk instead. I've spent hours tonight figuring how to remove windows 8.1. This was the solution for me. What a pain MS created with with windows 8.1

Answer:how to uninstall windows 8.1 in order to install windows 7

Quote:
While in the BIOS Boot menu

But not all BIOSes are the same, different brands implement them as they wish.

My solution to changing to a different OS is to boot to a GPARTED CD, delete all the partitions on the HDD which then gives the desired OS a clean drive for installing. The underlying issue is that one can't simply delete an OS and cannot use an OS it is booted for formatting the HDD, won't allow itself to be killed, which is why a different approach is needed.

If you got the computer with Win7 then upgraded to Win8/8.1 you might be able to use the Factory Restore to go back but be aware that almost anything you do can cause loss of installed programs and your data so be sure to back up your data to an External drive and get your program discs at hand for installation.
