Wireless Router Security issues, Belkin Wireless G router

Question: Wireless Router Security issues, Belkin Wireless G router

Hey all, I'm having some network security issues. I'm in an apartment complex and I need wireless access for my laptop, and the occasional friend's laptop, so I have a Belkin Wireless G router . I configured it to have a unique SSID and a pretty long passkey. The other day, I just randomly checked the status and found 4 connections on my DHCP server, 2 of which were NOT supposed to be there. One's host name is a jumble of letters and numbers, but the other one was Meredith_4 or something, so I know it was another person.

That said, I wanted to lock the router down pretty well. So, I enabled MAC Address filtering. I've never had to do this before, so I'm a bit ignorant of its capabilities. I figured that the ones I put in and didn't check "block" for would be allowed, and perhaps all others would be blocked. It doesn't appear to work this way, because one of the rogue connections was still on, even when I enabled filtering. So, I put his/hers/its MAC address in and checked "Block." I reset the router and the configuration took, but the connection still showed on the DHCP. I KNOW there are no other computers or wireless devices in this apartment, so what gives?

Also, I keep trying to put an administrator password on the router, but it won't take. It allows me to hit "Submit" after changing the password, but then it says "Allow 25 seconds for the router to restart," and then does nothing. Trying to login with the new password fails, and the default is just blank. WTF? This is annoying.

I also attempted to change the wireless passkey, and its changes didn't take. I'm at the computer that's physically connected to the router, and the MAC changes took just fine, but the password ones won't. Anyone have any ideas? Would a firmware upgrade fix this?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Wireless Router Security issues, Belkin Wireless G router

Connect your PC to one of the LAN ports with a network cable. Reset it to defaults, log in and turn off the wireless so you are the only PC connected. Now try setting your admin password and see what happens. Once you get that sorted you can turn your wifi back on and lock it down. If you can I would recommend using WPA or even WPA2 encryption. For mac filtering you want to enter the mac addresses of your wireless cards and allow only those to connect. On my home network I use a unique SSID and disable SSID broadcast. I also use MAC filtering to only allow my cards to connect. I changed my routers default IP address and disabled the DHCP function so it will not give out IP addresses. I use static IP's on my PC's.

Hi, I've got a Belkin Wireless G router, although I'm not using the wireless part of it, tied into a wireless antenna (it's an... interesting... "hi speed" network)

My problem is that web pages (and other things requiring URL-type lookups) will sometimes/often (seems to vary wildly) fail to load. I assume it's something to do with DNS, because if I'm in the middle of an internet based game like World of Warcraft, there is no issues, but if it's "doing it's thing" when I'm trying to first log in, it'll tell me it can't find the login server or somesuch. The same happens with internet-based radio (streaming through Winamp) although the bookmarks I have that seem to have numeric IP addressess instead of someradiostation.com/stationname or whatever, seem to be unaffected.

The cycle appears to be, web works fine, then fails to load (immediatly noticable, pages just pop up "can't find whatever"), then after a bit (10-20 seconds of attempting to reload every few seconds) it'll go into "searching" mode where it doesn't fail to load immediatly, it just hangs out for 10-20 seconds waiting, then things will start loading again like nothing happened. I can be online in World of Warcraft during this time and notice nothing apparently different ingame.

The router firmware is up to date, my ISP requires static IPs which I have set, along with the DNS servers (although I really should ... Read more

I bought a Belkin Wireless G Router last night at Best Buy. The Geek Squad guy there told me I could pay over $160 to get a wireless router and a Geek Squad member to come to my apartment and help me with setting up a network, but I wanted to just pay $39.99 for the Belkin router and set up the network myself.

Anyway, I got home and went through the instructions the best I could. I love all things tech, but setting up a network did seem a little confusing to me. I have a cable modem with Time Warner. Therefore, the cable goes from the cable modem to the router to my PC. That is working fine. I also have a wireless network adapter for my XBOX 360. That adapter found my wireless connection, and now I can watch videos, listen to music, and see pictures all from my PC on the XBOX 360 so that is very cool. I can also connect to XBOX Live easily.

However, I noticed that there are other wireless networks around me. I chose mine, of course, but I also went back and chose the other networks out of curiosity, and they required a password. Therefore, I wanted to know how to put a password on my wireless connection.

I followed the Belkin manual and I chose the WAP-type of security. I went back to XBOX 360, and I chose my connection, put in a password that I had chosen for the router, and everything works now.

My big question is will my wireless connection require a password from anyone else around my apartment who tries to get into it? My XBOX 360 did not require me to re-enter t... Read more

Hi allI just bought a Belkin wireless G 802.11g router and have installed it via an ethernet connection, as per instructions, to my desktop (running Win98SE) which currently has the broadband connection. It seems to be working fine, though I've not yet tried to connect any of my other two computers to it.I have two questions;1. Where do I go to find out about seting up some encryption to stop everyone in my street and the rest of the town using my broadband connection? I tried Belkins website but couldnt find anything there, and the installation disk I used has nothing on it that seems to relate to encryption. Anyone know where I can get some simple instructions on how to do this?2. Am I right in thinking that if I decide to move the computer thats currently hard wired to the Broadband modem via the router, I can simply fit it with a wireless G network card, move it, and leave the router sat there on its own with the cable modem? Or does the router and modem need at least one computer hard wired into it?Sorry for the bone questions, but I'm a network newb.Ta

Hello - please be patient with me, as I do don't doubt mine is a stupid question

I have a Belkin wireless router, with which I've managed to connect to the internet. However, whenever I try to adjust the security settings, the connection drops out, and I can't connect.

I installed the router using the installation CD and all was fine. Until I tried to make the connection secure.

have IntelPro Series wireless, but I don't really know if I should be trying to adjust security settings from within that software, or windows.

I'm so confused. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi, I have recently experinced some issues with my network were for no obvious reason i have been unable to access the internet on either of the 2 pcs connected this network( they are both running XP).

I have since managed to factory reset the Belkin router (Model F5D7632-4)and after disabling Zonealarm secruity suite on 1 of the PC's i have been able to connect it back to the network and gain access to the internet. However i can not get the second PC to connect back to the internet. I can see this machines ip address in the Router configuartion page and the PC itself seems to connect to the network since it has a ip adddress and other details.

I have tried disabeling firewalls and other software to see if this was interfering with the connection but it doesnt seem to have helped. Also i have tried typing ipconfig in the cmd prompt but i get an error message 'IPCONFIG is not recognized as an internal or external command'

I am really stuck as to what to try next so any suggestions would be great.

Thanks

I previously had a Linksys G router and had no problems using it for my wireless network. The usb adaptor I used recently broke and I thought I would take the chance to upgrade to the n standard. Got the Belkin router home and set about setting it up, following the quick launch guide, so problems with getting it set up to my main computer, which is wired to it.I am having problems with the wireless connection for my PC downstairs though. It can see the network and seemingly can connect to the router although not with any regular degree of success. The ping times to the router are in excess of 100ms. My girlfriend's laptop connects to the router and internet with no problems and I haven't changed any of the settings on that! (I used the same security settings/SSID as my old G router) She runs Vista on the laptop, while the 2 PCs have XP (with service pack 3 installed)Question is does anyone have any idea why I can get such potentially high signal strength and speed and yet ping times are still so low?Happy to provide any additional info you might need to help

I have been using the Belkin Wireless G Router for close to a year. I have the modem & router in my upstairs bedroom by themselves with no PC directly hooked up to it. I run 3 PCs off of it. One is 2 bedrooms over on the same floor, one is directly under it on the second floor, and the last one is in the basement. My dad lives next door and he also has a wireless network going on over there so I just have my network settings set up to use his connection for a secondary connection in case my service would ever die for some reason. I've been wireless for about 4 years.. Had a Linksys router for the first 3 years and after having to replace the router twice I went and bought a Belkin seemed to run pretty strong with out any problems until last week after about a year to the date it started to drop connection on me almost like a constant struggle it would connect and then it would grab my dads single and then back to mine. But that router died.. Would not power up at all. So I was thinking well I will just get a new one and try it again that was probably the problem. Well Belkin replaced the old one. I hook it up and I have the same problem. So I call Belkin and they are so foreign that you can barely make out anything they said. One told me to unplug my new router for a half hour and plug it back up and it would be fine. Thats all I can make out so I just hung up on him. My network needs to connect to 6 wired PCs and 1 wireless PC.

Right now the Linksys 4 port router connects to the ADSL modem and 4 PCs -and I want to add a new Belkin wireless router to provide a wireless LAN access and have 2 add'l LAN ports.

Therefore, can I, and how do I configure the devices, so that the ADSL modem would go into the Linksys router; the Linksys would provide LAN connection to 3 PCs and the 4th port would go to the input of the Belkin router, which in term would provide wireless access and 3 more LAN ports?

Thanks.

Answer:Combining Linksys Router and Belkin Wireless Router

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

Currently have a Belkin F5D5231-4 Router & a Hawking Wireless G router. I'm looking to replace the Hawking Wireless G with a Wireless N router. I bought a Belkin N150 wireless router, but I can't get it to work with my Belkin Router. With the Hawking, it didn't matter if the Hawking was first off of the Modem or the Belkin, they both worked. Now with the Belkin N150, only one will work. I can't get them both to work. Any advice on getting them both to work or a Wireless N router that will?

I set up everything and if I have it wired it works fine but wireless it says can't find page when you try to get on the internet. I have set up networks before and never had a problem. first time I have used a Belkin router G+ I guess one of my question is this. I was reading on the Belkin site that it is already set for dynamic and that is for a cable modem and sounds like I should change it to pppoe for a DSL modem. would that make the difference. It is a brand new laptop and the wireless card is on and it sees the network and works when wired, it says it is connected wirelessly but wont get on the internet when not wired. Would the pppoe thing make a differnce? Please give me some help here. Thanks

Hi all,
I just connected with WiMax, problem is I have the wimax wireless router in the house(all good).

But my office is in the garage! I was hoping to run an ethernet cable from WiMax Zylex router to my Belkin Wireless Router.

Is this the way to go about, sharing my internet connection? Also can anyone
give me any pointers on how to go about doing this.

cheers,
LiverKing.

Answer:Connect WiMax wireless (Zylex) with my Belkin N wireless router

I am no expert but will try to help. If I have understood you correctly, you only require the one router.
If the router in the house is a wireless router and your computer in your office is equipped for Wi-fi you could connect wirelessly. You will need the access code for the router when you try to connect. I think it will be a WEP or a WPA PSK code.
Otherwise run a ethernet cable from your house router to your office and connect it direct to your office computer (not too a second router) This is probably the safest method anyway if you do not need wireless.
You will then need to set up a network by going to "Control Panel" and clicking on "Network Setup Wizard" and following the instructions.
Hope that is of some help to you.

Belkin G wireless router 2.4ghz-802.11g
Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN mini-card

I am having an odd problem with the wireless capability of my wireless router. When I first got my router I used the Software included but that did not work so I set up my network manually. For several months everything was working perfectly and both physical and wireless connections to the router were working. Recently the wireless capability of the router has stopped working, however it still emits a strong signal and functions perfectly as a non-wireless router.

The problem my laptop encounter when it is try to connect is that the connection status constantly displays "Authenticating". I have tried to rebuild the network, no effect. Have clicked on the repair button, it sits indefinilty on the step "renewing IP address". I have tried physically entering my IP address, no effect. I am positive the problem is not my laptop wireless card because it still fuctions perfectly on all other networks.

Is this a networking problem or is it just time to get a new router?

Answer:Solved: Belkin G Wireless Router, Wireless Problems

Reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure. Initially try to connect wirelessly with encryption disabled.

Hey I'm Dizzle. I'm new but I really need some help!I have a BT Home Hub router, which is ok, but the wireless signal doesnt reach all of my house (some rather thick walls). I have a device that runs the ethernet signal through my house via the earth wire. But my laptop is wireless, and I want to keep it wireless. Can I use my Belkin ADSL Modem with Wireless G Router as a Wireless Access Point? I've tried to set it up but I keep getting stuck when I try to setup the WAN Connection type. I can make a wireless network - but that doesn't access the internet. So I end up stuck. Any chance someone know what I should do? The Belkin Part Number is F5D7632, ver. 1000uk. The belkin support site is useless to.click hereThanks a lot to anyone in advance.Dizzle

Answer:Belkin Wireless G Router as Wireless Access Point?

Yes, but you have to adjust the Belkin, so disconnect it.Now plug the laptop into it by ethernet and log into it.Disable DHCP and change the IP address of it to something on the same subnet as the BT hub but outside the DHCP pool. I would guess 192.168.1.250 would work. Finally link it to the ethernet from the BT hub but plug it into one of the LAN ports and turn it on. It should now work. If it doesnt turn everything off, turn the BT hub on and wait 5 min until it settles, then turn on the Belkin and try again.

When you installed the Belkin adaptor, did you install the belkin software? I have found this to be very troublesome and have reverted to using Windows (Windows Zero Configuration) to drive the wireless adaptor. You may have to uninstall the Belkin hardware and software and start again to get WZC to work.

I am trying to hook up a desktop computer. I have installed my Belkin wireless G card and hooked up the router to the host computer but i am having problems getting internet connectivity with the wireless g card.

Answer:Belkin wireless G desktop card & wireless G Router

If you are using a Router, there is no "host" computer. All computers connect directly to the Router and have an equal status in the network. You should *NOT* have Internet Connection Sharing set up on any connections. As regards the wireless connection, have you actually "Connected" to the wireless network? In other words, have you run the wireless adapter's software, scanned for "Available Wireless Networks", found and highlighted the one that matches your router's SSID (network name) and selected the option to "Connect" to it? You should be prompted to enter any WEP or WPA encryption key and, once "Connected", the wireless adapter should get its IP address by DHCP from the router and you should have network and internet access. There is a difference between the Wireless Network Adapter and Router communicating with a good signal and "Connecting" (as in "logging in") to your Wireless network. Note also that, if an incorrect WEP/WPA key is entered, you may appear to have "Connected" to the wireless network, but the connection won't work.

Answer:Belkin wireless router and wireless pci card..

Try changing the Channel to a much lower one such as 7 or 4, because there is a certain amount of overlap between channels and the difference between 11 and 13 is small.Using a fixed IP address can also help if poor radio performance is causing the adapter to lose the address allocated by DHCP.Interference can also cause connections to drop and the most common cause of this is a cordless phone located close to one of the WiFi components.

To get the maximum benefit from a router using 802.11n protocol, you would need to connect to it with a *COMPATIBLE* 802.11n Wireless Network Adapter, although its performance shouldn't be inferior to that of a standard 802.11g router.

Ok well first off I always come here for help and finally I have a need to post =P

In 2003 for Christmas I got an HP Pavilion a305w PC with a Belkin wireless router and adapter. It has worked fine until recently. I noticed that I keep getting disconnected from my network and the internet. My computer tells me that I am connected still and my Belkin Wireless Utility program says I have signal... but I cannot access network resources or internet resources. If I try typing in my router setup page it times out. This happens about every 10 minutes or if I transfer a lot of data and lasts for about 7 minutes. I have almost given up using my computer because I ran a networking cable directly from the router to my computer and there was no problem but my dad wont allow me to do it again. I do not know if there is some sort of interference or if my adapter is going bad. I have reformattes my computer several times, each time reinstalling the driver I got on CD and the driver from the Belkin Website. Still it does not work. I have found that by using the Belkin Wireless Lan Monitor program and hitting Re-Scan, it will search and find the network again and lets me stay on for about 10 more mins. It is getting really annoying and no one anywhere else can seem to help me.

By the way it is a Belkin 802.11b 11Mbps adapter - model F5D6050 (discontinued)

Answer:Belkin Wireless Router

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, you should be able to access it using the default IP address and blank password.

Hello there,

I've installed a Belkin N1 Wireless Router for a client, and it seems to go down every night just in time for the morning. By go down, I mean that although clients are still connected to the SSID, no networking functionality (network drives, connection to the Internet) is available.

This is resolved by hard rebooting the router. Do you think there could be issues caused by cordless phones etc... that cause the connection to go down, without fail every night?

I've tried changing the Wireless options so that "Protected mode" (a setting that prevents interference from other wireless devices) is on, and I moved the connectivity to a different channel number.

Is there anything else that I could try?

Richard

So, I've managed to hookup my wireless router in the past fine, like within the past week. A friend came in here and set it as a Wiress Access Point, now I'm unable to get to the router settings at all to restore it to the factory defaults. Any ideas on how I could go about doing that?

Answer:Belkin Wireless router help

Perhaps the model might help.....can log in and reset to factory defaults in the web admin (left side, under Utilities heading). Or...flip it back to Router/Gateway mode in the web admin.(also on the left side, under "Use as Access Point"...once you click on that, you'll need to enter the password you set on it....then be presented with an "Enable/Disable" radio button choice.

hi...i have just installed this router and it is seen on my other computer but i have no internet on my other pc...i have i connection from my laptop to internet via usb to adsl speedtouch modem to phone jack in the wall can u help please,,,

Answer:belkin g wireless router

If you have the correct hardware it will be a combined "Router & ADSL Modem" which *replaces* the USB Modem that you have been using. Both computers then connect to the router, either by ethernet cable or "wirelessly", for their internet access. The USB Modem should be removed completely from the system and any software that had been installed in order to use it should be uninstalled.

First off, Hello there, I'm new hope you could help me with the following problem:

My housemates and I have reccently had a 3mb blueyonder broadband connection installed in the house. This goes into the cable modem, then, into our Belkin F5D7230-4 .

When there is a singular PC plugged directly into the modem, without the router inbetween, the connection is great... However, when it is connection through the router, (via an 802.11g wireless connection with "excellent" signal strength) it is significantly reduced . (to well below what it should be, even if we were all using it).

I had a look in the settings for the router, and disabled the firewall, but even so, it is still (almost every second) blocking an ip, (it says for DoS protection). This ip also happens to always always be the number 2 ip on the list if i tracert or pathping any web address! so I assume it must be the local hub or something.

The connection through the router is only any good for a couple of minutes after resetting it, and I have no idea what's causing it....

also, if I ping my routers ip, the connection between my PC and the router seems perfect, so it must be the router stopping connectivity beyond that.

Any ideas as to how I could solve this problem? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Has anybody got an ideas on how to solve this problem

When you use AOL broadband, you cannot get online using IE until after signing on to AOL.

This is unavoidable and is the price you pay for bowing to the great internet giant.

Answer:Wireless set up with Belkin router?

I'm not an expert on wireless networking but I know just enough to be dangerous. You can connect several devices wirelessly to your router including your two laptops. However, everything does have to be compatible.

How did you set up your Belkin router? Did you set up a security protocol? WEP is an older less secure protocol. Perhaps your router was set up with WPA or WPA2 and the MAC is only compatible with WEP. Just a possibility.

Hi GuysI just got a Belkin N1 Wireless Router along with a Belkin N USB Adapter.I plugged the Router in and changed all my cables over as instructed to do so from my bt modem to the Belkin. I installed the disk and followed the instructions on screen and entered my IP details. It connected me to the internet through my wired connection and all was hunky dory. I then installed the software on my other pc which is approx 5 meters away for the usb adapter. This installed nicely and was up and running. The problem is that it can rarely find my network and when it does it wont let me connect to it. There is no security on the network as yet and the network is visable. Im running xp on the wired and Vista on the wireless. I was told by belkin to update the driver for the vista machine which i did and still nothing. I've tried every channel available from the router and still nothing. Ive spent 2 days messing with this now and im ready to smash the whole lot of junk up. I wanted to run the vista pc in another room, but it wont even connect from 5 meters away. PLease help.I hate talking to Belkin support as it seems to be in india or somewhere and i cant even hear what they are saying half the time.

Answer:Belkin N1 Wireless Router

I have not tried the latest Belkin wifi management software, but I think it's a pity that you chose to install it. From XP onwards, such software has been entirely redundant and most folk consider it to be inferior to the simple reliability of WZC (and the Vista equiv.) Windows is happier doing it that way.Uninstall it, run a cleanup, then reinstall it with the driver ONLY.If you're not able to get the network secured ASAP, click here and turn off the wireless. Either that or get WPA/WPA2 up and running. Long key, mix of ASCII characters and symbols, circa 20 characters in length, copied to a text file to avoid typing errors.Oh, and read the manual from Belkin's website. It is very very simple to set up a home network and router, but if you start off wrong, you will likely go nowhere fast.

Is there any reason why I should have a problem accessing the configuration page at 192.168.2.1 when the router is connected to the pc via a cable, but not connected to an ADSL line (Page Cannot Be Displayed)? Does it have to have an ADSL signal before the page can be accessed, unlike my Netgear non-wireless cable router?I realise there isn't much point fiddling with configuration if the router can't `see` a working internet connection, but I don't have an ADSL enabled line here...

Answer:Belkin wireless router

No, you don't need an active ADSL line to get into the config UI.Is this a new problem, or is this your first attempt with a router that you've just recently purchased?Try the obvious first; use a different browser or minimise your security settings (script blocking for example) though I have to say that I can access my Belkin config with scripts blocked. I just tried it to see if it has any effect.

The Belkin instructions for factory reset are to press the reset for 10 seconds with the unit switched on. This is wrong. I'm trying to setup a VPN, but having no success connecting to it from the Internet. I have a Belkin Wireless-G Router, model FD57321-4. According to several Belkin FAQs, no additional setup is necessary for a VPN to operate. However, their seemingly knowledgeless technical support claims simple port forwarding is necessary (of course, they have no idea what ports they are). I've opened the TCP and UDP ports claimed to be typically used for VPN (1723, 1701, 50, 51, 47, etc...), but I'm still not able to connect to my VPN from outside my network. I am able to connect to my VPN via my PDA when connected to the router wirelessly. Anyone know how to get this working or if it's even possible with this particular router? I'm attempting to make this connection using XP's native VPN service and client.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ive done a speed and ping test and they are spot on,so its got to be something im not doing. sorry about all the questions.

Answer:belkin N1 wireless router

Firstly yes, you do need security on. You have a choice between the older WEP or the newer more secure WPA. But Windows 7 64 bit does not like WPA.
As long as your email, and Internet access are all working, then the best thing to do is have a good look at the manual, You have a lot of devices attached, are they hard wired or wireless?
In my Draytek thread I have posted a query about WPA and Windows 7. Mine never drops out, has a DTS system, A Regza television attached by cable, and I use my iPad and laptop wirelessly.
One thing you could try is the UPNP setting. It's most likely disabled by default, but remember where it lives when you find it so you can disable it again if it doesn't help!
A lot of menus really should be left alone, if you want to play, you will also find a backup entry somewhere in the system. This will allow you to restore the router to exactly the same settings as before you made changes. Save it to your desktop for easy access.

these are both operating on windows 98 SE

Answer:Belkin wireless router

Well firstly the yellow question mark either means the device isn't working or the driver isn't working or it's just not set uo properly which is the most likely.

But from the rest of what you say I'd suggest that the correct protocols haven't been set up for the network cards.

You'll need to have the TCP/IP protocol set up for the card. This is done via the Neighborhood Network icon which should be on your desktop. Right click on it and the click on Properties to bring up the configuration tabs.

Bindings etc are set up in here but as I'm not sure exactly how well you know your way around these places I'll hold off going into too much detail at the moment.

This may have been better posted in the Networking forum by the way but I'm sure an administrator will move this if they deem it necessary.

Hi everyone, this is my first post here. I've trawled the net for ages but have found nothing. I believe I have a unique situation here and would love some help from some net savvy people. I have strong computing skills, but keep away from networks if possible. Hope someone here can help, would really appreciate it.

Here's my current setup:
- HP Pavillion Laptop with Windows 7
- Receiving internet from a USB connected wireless modem (Huawei model E160E)
It all works well, internet is fine, I'm happy.

Why I want to share this network connection:
I have a couple of iphones and a Nintendo Wii and we would like to connect them to the the laptops internet connection.

Other things I've tried first:
I DO understand "Connectify" is out there and have tried it but it just fails every time I've tried it, the devices that try to connect all just sit there trying to connect and time out.

My possible solution found:
So what I found deep in my cupboards is a Belkin N Wireless Modem Router (Model F5D8633-4). It's a relic from my days of having an ADSL connection. This was back in the days when I used to have a physical phone line. Ahh they were the days, a physical connection to my house. Imagine that!

What I intend to do with the the Belkin relic:
I want to still receive the connection to my windows 7 laptop as I currently do, but have that connection shared over the belkin wireless modem router so that the nintendo wii and iphones can then co... Read more

Answer:Unique Q: USB Huawei Wireless Modem to feed house via Belkin Wireless N Modem Router

You enable Internet Connection Sharing on the internet connection and configure the Belkin as follows.

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Initially could not get it to work now it does but everytime I close the system down and re-start it doesn't work. I try to repair Belkin and sometimes it can't find a wireless connection and then if it does it says put in WPA code. I do this and it still does not connect it is driving me nuts. Any ideas how I can make this stable as even system restore does not always work. Should I change the Belkin?? Sorry for being so long......Have just changed WPA to no security to see what happens and nothing so can only connect using ethernet cable. Please help

Answer:Wireless Belkin using Livebox Router

There is a specific procedure for connecting third-party wireless adapters to a Livebox, which involves putting the router into "pairing" mode. Have you done this?

I have Virgin 10Mb Broadband and when I connect my modem direct to my desktop PC I get a very good 9.7Mb (Broadband Expert speed test). But when I connect my Belkin wireless router the speed to my desktop PC (wired connection) drops to as low as 0.4Mb! Wireless connection to my wife's and my laptop is also very slow.Am I correct in assuming that the wireless router is broken or could it be an internal setting problem?

Answer:Problems with Belkin Wireless Router?

Are you switching everything off for a minute or two before swapping between router/computer? You must do so. Turn on modem, wait 1 minute, turn on router, wait another minute, then turn on or connect computers. The modem associates with the device connected to it the last time it was switched on.

Hi guys - hoping some of you can help me with the problem im having - ive tried to search the internet for a solution and tried loads of things but to no avail.

I have a Vista laptop and im trying to setup a Wireless router in my flat. I have a Belkin F5D763-4 router.

My parents have the same router set up in their house and I can access that fine with my computer wirelessly.

I am currently running a Tiscali wired connection for the internet which runs fine.

I go through all the setup options on the Belkin instructions but when I try to connect to the router it gives a message saying connected with limited connectivity. From looking around the internet this seems to be a common problem.

I dont know if this is relevant but when i tried to set up the router via the network car and cable on my PC it would not connect to the router unless i had the wired modem connected through USB and an inernet connection established.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Mike

So,

I just bought the Belkin G+MIMO Wireless Router. I have everything connected, all the lights are on, yada yada. Why can't my laptop connect with the internet, the wireless light is on. Do I have to buy an adapter?

Help?
K.R.

Answer:Solved: Belkin Wireless Router

do you know if your laptop came with built in wireless? if so, you should not need to buy an adapter. look for an icon down by the clock that says something like "wireless connection", "wireless assistant" or something like that. if you have more than one, let us know, that might be important as well. if you do have built in wireless on the laptop, make sure it is switched on ( some laptops have a switch for the built in wireless so you cant turn it off when it is not needed, to conserve battery power when not plugged in) it will usually have a blue light with a symbol that looks like an antenna with waves coming off of it.

I am running a computer on the above router and my wife is in next room connected up wirelessly to me. The computer she is using is some 4 years old with under 1GB memory, it has a 802.11G Belkin card fitted. It just keeps disconneting, when you click on repair it sometimes works. If not, and you click on the card 802.11G it takes you to the country codes and is always set to United states of America 1/11 when you change it to United Kingdom 1/13 it connects up again. When it fails again and you go to card it is back to USA 1/11. Any ideas how to stop this disconnection problem? Cheers Diesel48

Hi,I am just wondering, is it absolutely necessary that I have a modem for this router to fully function? I have a BT Voyager Modem, but it's years old, and does not have the right fittings for me to set it up as the instruction manual shows.I'm trying to set up the Router which I just got, wire it to my PC and have my laptop connected wirelessly with the USB adapter, but I cannot get the Router to connect to the internet, this is how I currently have it set up:Ethernet Cable from Router to PCPhone Line Cable from the "Connection to Modem (Internet/WAN) plug to my phone line.I also should point out that whenever the Router is plugged in, my phone line goes completely blank and I cannot make or recieve phone calls.I am on BT Broadband Home Basic. Thanks in advance and I hope you guys can help!Stuart.

Hello all,

I've used TSG forums for a while, and have always been able to find my problem and solution without asking, until now.

A friend has recently bought a Belkin 54g wireless router on his XP system.
He's installed the software apparently with no probs.
The router also seems to communicate with his pc with no problems because typing 192.168.2.1 into the address bar on IE as per the 'quick setup' instructions, goes to a splash screen that I think is located on the router, bacause all lights show green on it apart from 'the Internet' light which is completely off. This splash screen has a button on it to 'configure the modem' but when pressed, his pc goes through the dialup procedure with no success.

Answer:Belkin 54G Wireless router - no Internet.

"He's installed the software apparently with no probs."

What software? What's the router's model?

"... his pc goes through the dialup procedure with no success."

What??? He has a dial-up ISP? What is his attempted network configuration?

I have a Belkin router F5D7230-4 and PCs running XP / XP pro. It connects fine with ethernet cables but will not see the wireless. The wireless card in the PC finds other wireless routers but not my router.I've reset the factory settings and refreshed the software, no change. The wireless is shown as being enabled on the Belkin panel.

Answer:Belkin router won't work on wireless

When enabling "wireless" in a router, there is usually the option to select "B", "G" or "B&G", try both the "G" and the "B&G" settings (B being 802.11b and G being 802.11g).Also ensure that the router is set to broadcast its SSID.

When i make large downloads (over let's say 50 Mb) or when i vist sites and forums with more than 10 - 15 good quality pictures the router locks up.. the network works fine but it doesen't broadcast tha web .. so there i go.. unplug the router.. wait a while .. reconnect then i comes back to normal until i download again or view those sites again!

Router:
First: Gigabyte .. don't recall the modell but it was 54Mbs
Second : SMC barricade G
Now : belkin f5d7230-4 (with the last firmware installed)

Hope anyone can help with this... cuzi'm about to hit this router with a very heavy hammer

I would also see if your router supports "Protected Mode". That fixed a similar issue for me awhile back.

Hi all,I am currently running a Belkin G wireless router on Win XP pro (32 bit). I am considering buying a new laptop running Win 7 64 bit - my question is will I have to update the router drivers (do Belkin call this the "Firmware").I have looked on the Belkin website and can get no sense from it ?!?!?Thanks for any help

Answer:Belkin Wireless router - upgrading to win 7 64 bit

You wont need drivers for the router, just attach it to the computer with an ethernet cable, if you need to set it up. No, Firmware isn't the same as drivers.

I have tried all weekend to set up a wireless network using the above Belkin Wireless G Router 54MBps 802.11g - Frustration!!I have NTL which is wired using an ethernet cable from the set-top box into my network card on my PC running Win98SE. Simple I thought, so following directions supplied, connected all up as per manual... all works fine but I cannot access web pages via internet explorer. I have followed all standard tips and even tried manual set up altering the TCP/IP as instructed but to no avail! Have changed Ie setting to test it and have done all usual like turn off my ZoneAlarm firewall in case it was that too...still no joy!! Arggh I am pulling my hair out with this one. I know all about IP addresses and stuff as NTL often hangs onto one so I use winipcfg to release and renew my connection on a regualr basis.Does this router work with set-top boxes? Am I missing something? Belkin's helpline wasn't much help as it was in Mumbai or somewhere and we had major English language problems!Has nayone had any success setting up wireless router on NTL cable set-top boxes? I want my second PC to share the broadband connection and have a USB wireless network adapter for it.Maybe I will take this back to PCWorld and get one that someone knows works with NTL.

Answer:BELKIN WIRELESS G ROUTER & NTL Broadband

So your set top box has a built in ntl cable modem? Did you have it all working on broadband before you bought the belkin? And originally the ethernet cable from it went into your network card, but now plugs into the belkin, and then an extra ethernet cable goes from the belkin to the network card? What is the behaviour of the lights on the belkin?

I brought and set up a Belkin Wireless Modem / Router yesterday - model F5D7630-uk4A. It connects to the internet over my BT OpenWorld ADSL line with no problem, and I can talk to the router via my Belkin Network Adapter without any problem. When I try and access web pages though I start getting problems. Some seem to load ok, but others only show part of the info, or the pictures don't download. Other times, the first page displays okay, but if I then click on a link this won't load and I usually get a Page Cannot Be Displayed error. If I ping something like click here then I get an IP address of 212.58.224.113 and access times of about 22ms. No packets get lost.If I then run a tracert click here, the first 5 hops are okay, but after that I just get * * * *. The last destination reached always seems to be inh3cs01-500.imsnet2.btopenworld.com [81.128.254.125].Is this a router setup problem, a DNS problem, or a BT problem? Thanks in advanceIain.

Answer:Problem with Belkin wireless router over BT net

Thanks for that. What sort of problem do you think it may be? Any more info would be very helpful. I say that because BT probably wont have the faintest idea what I'm talking about, and neither will I.Are you saying that this is a DNS problem or a problem with one of their actual servers?Could there be anything within the Belkin setup that would cause this? Is anybody else using this router over the BT network?

<<< Autoconfiguration IP address: 169.254.93.196 >>>The wireless adapter has lost its IP address from the router, which should be in the 192.168.2.xxx range and Windows had allocated a 169.254 address which won't work. You might get away with using a fixed IP address. The router will be set to allocate addresses within a certain "pool", for example 192.168.2.2 to 192.168.2.20, so try using a fixed address outside this range. Try something like:IP address - 192.168.2.50Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0Default Gateway - 192.168.2.1 (the router's IP address)DNS Server address - 192.168.2.1 (the router's IP address)

Okay, i've got a big problem.

I have a home wireless network with a Belkin Wireless Router (F5D7230uk4) at the centre.

The PC upstairs can connect to the router, etc fine, but just lately, when I open Internet Explorer on it, it will most of the time, not open any pages, requiring me to restart the router.

I havent got a clue whats going on here, as the other computer is fine.

Both PC's are running Windows XP SP2, one is connected via cable, and the one upstairs, wirelessly.

The question is very similar to "How long is a piece of string?". What is actually happening when you try to connect to the router? Is your network showing up in the network list? If so, what happens when you try to connect? What errors are you getting? Supply us with some more info and then we can help.

Hi.

I didn't know where I should post this, mods please move as appropriate.

I recently changed ISP from Tiscali to Direct Save Telecom. I received a letter the other day saying that the switch had been made. However I still have the same issues as before and haven't done anything actively to 'connect' to their provider. The router is still configured to Tiscali. I'm a little confused as to how it all works.

Anyway I have been attempting to configure the router to DST, assuming this would complete the switch and halt the Tiscali usage.

So I entered 192.168.2.1 in my browser and entered the setup wizard. When asked for the ISP DST wasn't on the list and this means I have to manually enter some things. When I just tried going with the default, it wouldn't connect, only inputting the old Tiscali details reconnected me. I don't have a clue what they refer to and my DST literature doesn't suggest what I should input there:

Connection type: PPPoE, PPPoA, Dynamic/Fixed IP (1483 bridged), Static IP (IPOA), Modem Only (Disable Internet Sharing)

IP assigned by ISP: Yes/No (No opens up more fields)

VPI/VCI: Both require numerical entries

Encapsulation: VC MUX, LLC

MMU: Another numerical entry, default is 1454

Could anyone give me an idea what to enter in these fields?

I'm stumped. Thanks for your help.

Answer:Configuring my Belkin wireless router to my new ISP

is this a router-modem or one or the other?
whats the model and brand?

If its a simple router, then its mainly dependent on your modem a;readu having access to the ISP service already. Then configuring your router to use the modem as a gateway..

If its a combo unit, or the modem, then the settings you may need to tweak with. I'm not familiar in what your ISP settings are for you, since i don't live in the UK, but theres a few things to try..

-Reset your unit to manufacturer's default
-download the latest firmware from the manufacturer and update
-read/download the manual for your unit and have a read. Often it will give you explanations of what each things do and mean.
-contact your provider and ask them if they can assist you in someway..

I recently upgraded my router from a model 2-3 years old to the belkin N1.
My previous model had some packet loss in one room but that was due to quite a few walls being embetween, I started to use it in a different room and it performed perfectly. Now I have upgraded I get often very bizarre pings to my router such as:

Pinging 192.168.2.1 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=112ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=135ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.2.1: bytes=32 time=159ms TTL=64

Ping statistics for 192.168.2.1:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 159ms, Average = 101ms

I was used to this in the room with a bad signal but the software im using shows a good to very good signal with good speed. The use of just browsing the internet doesnt seem too affected but when i try to play a game that ran fine with the old setup I get bad packet loss and a pretty unstable ping. Tried changing the channel being used as netstumbler showed a different network using the same, but the signal then just seemed to get worse (just changed from the router setting, couldnt find it within the network card advanced options). Dont want to fiddle with any of the settings within the router options as i dont really understand them any advice or further questions welcome thanks.
