Problems with Linksys WRT54G DD-WRT firmware

Question: Problems with Linksys WRT54G DD-WRT firmware

Been using the new firmware for a while with no problems but now I'm not able to access the router's interface through the web thing. I've reset the router and whatever I try I can't access it. I can telnet it but I don't know the user and pass. It still works and assigns IPs but I can't get to the web interface.

Preferred Solution: Problems with Linksys WRT54G DD-WRT firmware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Problems with Linksys WRT54G DD-WRT firmware

Well, not sure what to tell you about the web interface. But for telnet the username should be root and the password should be set to whatever you set the administrator password to.

So a litle more then a year ago, I set up my first wireless network using the WRT54G. It was still only version 1.0. I have the router set up in the basement, I tried using my laptop on the back porch, and I had a very horrible connection. I then started to look around for a different solution. This was before the high gain antanaes for the router. And then I can't remember how, but I found this firmware program called Satari. It gives you tons of more feutures then the standard firmware put out by linksys. One of which allows you to boost your siginal strenght by raising your xmit power (basicly overclocking the router).

But anyway, just recently my router has been disconnecting from my cable internet modem. And I find myself hard restetting it at least once a day in order to gain internet access. I can still access my router and ping other computers on the network, but neither wired nor wireless can access the internet until I reset the router. Does anybody have any idea what is going on? I've alread tried cloning my mac address, disenabling WEP, and several other things. Or could this just be a dreaded failure from esentially overclocking my router, but if this was true, I don't know why the wire switch would be effected......

The other day I bought the WRT54G to use in my apartment, sharing the connection amongst four of us. I'm the only one who doesn't use my cell as my primary phone; instead, I use Vonage. I bought the WRT54G to be able to use QoS features, since my roomies aren't always good about keeping the cable line de-saturated with their downloads.

I know about the Sveasoft firmware, but after doing some reading I'm hearing some bad things about their business practices (GPL and whatnot). I don't mind paying $20 to get the good stuff, but I don't want to pay it if I can otherwise legally aquire the same thing.

I do not want to get into even somewhat gray areas here, since I'd rather get good quality advice. Please don't tell me to look on P2P sites or the like. (That's what PMs are for. ) But seriously, what are my options to enable QoS, and make use of some other cool options on my new router?

Oh yes, almost forgot: Some instructions on what I need to do would also be helpful. I've done firmware upgrades, of course, but if there's some esoteric method for doing things, please let me know that, too.

When upgrading a Linksys WRT54G's firmware via the web interface, is it necessary to power cycle the router after the upgrade, or does it automatically reboot without user intervention?

Note: This is in hardware because it concerns the actual piece of hardware rather than the networking/security aspects of it.

I bought a used Linksys WRT54G v8.2 router and I would like to replace the stock firmware with DD-WRT, because Linksys -- I should say Belkin now -- hasn't brought out any firmware updates for this model in a very long time.

The problem is that the idiots at DD-WRT's official site are being very unhelpful & not cooperative.

I just want to know what version I need to get from the FTP site that is in one of the articles, and they keep stating read all 4 which I've done multiple times and still have no idea.

They wonder why they are getting a bad rap, is because they are annoying new users who want to use their software.

I may just start saving up and get the RouterBoard wired/wireless router down the road.

Ok, you guys can make fun of me if you want, but I was in a hurry and thought that I might be able to get away with this.

I was trying to help my brother upgrade the firmware on his router and thought that it would be faster to just do it myself remotely, rather than trying to explain the process to him.

It all seemed to be working fine, until a little over halfway through the upgrade, I got a "firmware upgrade failure" message and now the router is completely unresponsive.

I'm guessing the problem came from the bin file being locally on my computer while I was upgrading the router remotely.

Anyway, is there any way to fix this? We can't even ping the router now.

I had him unplug it and reset it and its still not responding.

Maybe Walmart will take it back.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G firmware upgrade failure.

There's a very good website on the net complete with pictures that tells you how to revive a dead WRT54G. I unfortunately never bookmarked it, but it involved the following:

1. Unplugging the unit.
2. Taking it completely apart (it's easy - screwless design)
3. Locate pins 15-16 on the router's chipset (usually labeled Broadcom).
4. Short the pins. While shorting them, plug the power in.
5. You'll see lights flash.
6. You'll have a small window of opportunity to TFTP a working firmware to the router.

I could ellaborate some more, but I have to go to work. It really does work. I did it myself after a bad firmware upgrade.

But yeah, it's probably easier if you just got it replaced.

I just recently updated my firmware on my linksys router WRT54G with the new version of linksys firm ware and now my router does not work. I can not access the GUI under the ip address 192.168.1.1. I 've tried to reboot the router using the 30/30 method that is suggested by Linksys, but I still can not access the routers GUI. Please advise if there is another method to set back the routers firmware.

Answer:Update firmware on Linksys router WRT54G version 2

Try 192.168.1.0.

I don't believe that the router saves any copy of the old firmware to set back to.

I'd recommend the DD-WRT firmware.

Was it the wrong firmware? Was it for your chipset version? Was the firmware for G, or GS, or other?

I have just gone through a major network insanity which began with me trying to flash firmware to my Linksys WRT54G router. Now, even with it hooked up to my main router, I cannot access 192.168.1.1. What I was attempting to install was DD-WRT through the web admin. Outside, it appears to be functioning like normal, no signs of any bricks. I can even access it through wireless, but haven't tried out internet connectivity.

I have an old Linksys WRT-54G that I thought might be getting a bit long in the tooth. There was a recent sale on the new D-Link DIR-657 which is a full featured current gen model, that supports wireless N, support QOS automatically for game and video packets, and supports USB print server and file sharing function. I decided to upgrade for the cheap price of $20 on at the recent onesaleaday listing.

I expected to get a bit of an improvement in connection speed - after all that old Linksys router is about a decade old. I've not really spent time on wireless yet to compare at all, but for wired there is no change to speak of. I was surprised, because I figured that old v2 WRT-54G 200mhz processor might have been holding me back. It apparently was not.

I ran eight simple speed tests with each router pretty immediately after swapping them out. I ran four cities twice on the speakeasy.net tests. (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/) Here are the results.

The WRT54G version 5.0 uses completely different operating system than previous WRT45Gs. Its based on VxWorks. I'm not sure about the problem you are mentioning. I would try resetting the router back to factory defaults. Also considering upgrading it to the latest version available on Linksys.com.

My wireless network is a Linksys WRT54g and 2 computers running WMP54g and 1 with a dell wireless. My computer has a Linksys NIC, and I'm the closest to the router having to only go through 1 wall and about 10 feet of distance. I have no problems on my part. The computer with the Dell is 2 rooms away (approx. 30ft. away) and goes through many more walls and the other Linksys NIC is 3 rooms away (approx. 40 - 50ft. away). They can both download at the rated speed of the ISP and browse pages and what not, but when it comes to gaming, they get terrible packet loss and high pings, 3x the ping of mine sometimes. They even get dropped sometimes. This problem used to not occur when the router was in my room, but I have since moved it to another room adjacent to mine. Firmware and drivers are all up to date, transmitting power is at 100% and I changed the channel to 11 in case the default was interfering with other wireless products in the house (even though this was never a problem before). These solutions did not fix the problem. Could this all be because I simply moved it 1 room over and now it's too far away for them?

Answer:Linksys WRT54g problems

it could easily be becaused you moved it.

have you looked at any of the other firmware, i believe some of them give you increases signal. i think the other firmwares are hyperwrt and alchemy

I just moved to a person's basement. He has DSL connected with PPPOE. I set up my router on his connection so I can get the Internet on my computer downstairs.

It seems to work except for the fact that some sites work while others won't. MSN Messenger refuses to connect, microsoft sites in general are slow, there are some other sites that I can't seem to connect to either, like my bank's online banking or my university's email service.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

Hello fellow Hard Forumites.

I don't normally post to the hard forums, because I don't normally have anything to say. However, I am now stumped with a problem that should be so simple I shouldn't need to post it here.

One of my buds had an ancient D-Link router that didn't want to recieve DHCP updates from his provider (Charter). No problem, I said -- just go grab a new linksys WRT54G turn on remote administration, and I'll set it up.

Well, long story short -- it works fine for about 5 minutes. At the end of the 5 minutes, only web traffic works. He can't play games online (Eve, Battlefield, Counterstrike, whatever), can't use IM, can't do anything but surf the web. And even that seems to work only every other request.

I had my bud take back the router twice, and all of them exhibit the same problem. I've disabled all the firewall settings, changed anything else I can think of, and no matter what it works fine for less than five minutes, and then bam, nothing again.

Please Hard Forum -- you're my only hope!

Thanks!

I have a win7 pc that has been using a linksys wrt54g router to an ISP cable modem. Has worked for about a year with no problems. Suddenly, my wifi has died. I cant connect through the linksys and I cant see wifi using my iphone.

I tried to connect to the router on ports 1-4 using the ip address 192.168.1.1 but all I get is "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

So, do we think think the router has died? I tried to power it off and on and did the reset for 30 sec but still no help.

I also tried to connect straight to the router using my XP laptop but nothing...

Any ideas?

Answer:linksys wrt54g problems

I have the exact same router. I'm running 3 systems with Seven, one with XP, one with Vista, 3 iPod touch devices a Nintendo Wii and 2 networked printers. Zero problems. Most are on the WiFi, only my file server is direct-connect.

Sounds a little like the router has just crashed. Doesn't happen very often but it does happen. Try a hard-reset using the recessed reset button on the back. If, after that, you can't even connect to it with a cable directly then yeah ... yer probably looking at a dead unit.

For those of you have the high throughput disconnects when tranfering from pc to pc with these modems, go to:

http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2601

Go to page 19 and you'll see where the new beta firmware for the routers has basically fixed the problems for almost everyone. Post the results if it fixed it, that way linksys can get the final version out.

Ok, I'll begin by saying that I am a networking major and I can't seem to solve this problem. I'll keep this as short as possible.

I have an Arris cable modem that connects to my Linksys WRT54Gv6, which is running a micro flavor of DD-WRT SP2. The Linksys router handles the wired/patched connections throughout the apartment and also transmits the wifi. I came back from this weekend and my roommate told me that our internet was messed up. I had a look and changed some things around to get it working again but the Linksys seems to be having trouble getting an IP address from the cable modem. If I reset both and wait a few minutes it might finally get a WAN IP then I can do whatever online until it suddenly stops working. I went to bed last night with it working just fine and now I can't even get my Linksys to retrieve an IP from the cable modem. The Linksys will give me and the rest of the computers IP's via wired or wireless no problem it just isn't communicating with the modem correctly.

I need suggestions.

First senario,
I setup the Linksys WRT54G and installed the Wireless-G PCI Adapter on a WinXP Pro with SP1. I used a WEP key and connected, everything went smooth. Internet and everything was working.

Second Senario,
Recently formatted, I now have WinXP Pro SP2. I have the same router settings and I go to install the Wireless-G PCI Adapter drivers/wifi util. Everything installs fine, wifi nic is recognized etc. I disable windows from controlling the wifi connections so I can use linksys's util (as I did in senario 1). This time it connects to the access point but says. "Connected to access point but no internet connection". So I can see the router, I have a DHCP address X.X.X.101 . But it wont connect to the interenet. So I tried upgrading the firmware on the router (to 2.04.4), didnt help. Same error. Looked for updated wifi nic driver (there are none, stock ones are the latest). I tried diabling WinXP's built in firewall, still doesnt get internet. I don't understand what is wrong. I can see the router but the router doesnt have an internet connection? The icing on the cake is there is a computer "wired" into the router via cat5 and it can access the net just fine. So the router see's the cable modem. I have search google and seen other people with the same issue but no resolutions were posted. I think it has to do something with XP SP2 but I dunno.

Have any idea?

Reset the wrt54g, holding the reset button. Why...is another long story was basically trying to get a PSP to connect wirelessly....tried to set it up entered wep etc etc but PSP would not connect to the router.

Finally P#$$#d off did the reset.

Now I cant connect to the net Using the Ethernet cable !!!! So can't Enable WEP. And most irritating is of course having to dial up using PPPoE(I think thats what it's called). Earlier it would connect as soon as the modem booted???? Thank god I had saved the dialer along with user name and password.

I can ONLY connect to the net on my lappy wirelessly after using the dialer!!!!! Is'nt this strange as I would have thought people normally had Problems connecting wirelessly and not when wired up!!!

What should be done to fix this stink :cry TIA

For the past year or so I have been experiencing problems with the Linksys WRT54G Router. It has been replaced 3 times so far and every WRT54G Router we get it does the same exact thing.

Currently we have WRT54G v8 with firmware v8.00.6 build 005, Jun. 16, 2008.

The Router after a few days ends up losing the subnet mask. The subnet mask changes to 0.0.0.0 and the only way I can fix it is to unplug the router and plug it back in. One time I logged onto the Router and changed 0.0.0.0 to my subnet mask and it ended up freezing the internet. The only way I could fix that was to unplug the Router and plug it back in. When it does change to 0.0.0.0, the internet goes slow, but still works.

The only thing I really use the Router for is a firewall. To eliminate any issues I thought it could be, I disabled DHCP on the Router and switched it over to a Windows 2003 Server. I am still having the same problems and I am out of ideas. Anyone have any other ideas?

Would something like this "http://openwrt.org/" fix my problem?

or this one? http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

A while ago I updated my Firmware http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware on the router to whatever was most current on the Linksys linksys site, and everything worked fine while connected through the router to my PC. I began to have some lag issues in video games, so I reset my modem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem and when I went to plug everything back in I could not connect to the internet, so I had to connect directly to my computer from the modem, which is how I am able to get on the internet now.

Well, now that I have a laptop laptop , I want to be able to get online with it all over the house or use it to multi-task. I just tried to update the firmware and reconnected the ethernet cable http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_physical_layer from the router to my PC and the ethernet cable from the modem to the back of the router and even after the firmware update I still cannot connect to the internet, or get wireless on my laptop.

Anyone had this problem and/or know how to fix it?

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Answer:Problems with Linksys WRT54G v2.2 Router

What's the exact make/model of the modem?

Try this procedure to get the router connected?
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Hey guys I was having extreme problems with firewalls and antivirus programs conflicting and sending my browsing experience to the lowest its ever been. I decided to dig out my router and use that. I think the firewall program did some blocking and it has stayed in the registry or maybe ive set up my router wrong. I went to the linksys router setup and opened the ports i want to stay open for gaming and stuff but they don't seem to wanna stay open. I will open the port and do a port check to see if anything is coming through that port and it looks good for about 10sec after I open it. If i refresh or try it later it showing as blocked. I have no idea what i am doing wrong. As far as i know i have it all set up right. I have reset the router a dozen times now and still same problem. Linksys has opened up the port buy something is blocking it elsewhere i think.
I did cmd/ipconfig and am using the right IP address. on the linksys setup IP page everything is checked under applications and gaming that is to be checked. Could it have something to do with passwords maybe? When i log in put in password and enter the info just now and hit save changes it opened up for a quick second then shut down.

Before router I was using COMODO pro and AVG pro recent versions
those 2 programs seem to work for a week or so but then they shut me right out from internet explorer/firefox. I could only browse in safe mode. I got rid of both those programs after just buying them

I bought two of these and flashed them to the latest DD-WRT mega bios. I have both of them set up as bridges. One is hooked up to my Xbox 360 and connects and stays connected to my wireless signal flawlessly ("local and internet"). The other is hooked up to my main desktop and it will connect to the wireless signal, but will soon drop the internet connection while remaining connected to the local network. I have swapped the routers back and fourth (resetting in between and not) and the 360 always connects perfectly and the desktop always drops the internet connection. Any suggestions?

Loads of problems with LinkSys on this forum alone!

A friend of mine has a Windows 2000 laptop from work with a Dell WAN 1350 wireless card. His wife and daughter use a HP PC to access the internet. I set up the WRT54G router like it says. I plugged the cable modem (a WebStar by Scientific-Atlanta i believe) into the router and plugged the LAN cable from the router to the HP PC. Doesn't work. I setup via the 192.168.1.1 and nothing worked. The PC was connecting to the router but the router wasn't connecting to the internet. The wireless doesn't work at all. The Dell WAN card isn't working at all. It isn't picking up any signal from any wireless connection. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G + Dell WAN 1350 Card + Wired HP PC... Problems!!!

With the information given, my only idea is that you didn't properly set up the router.

Did you connect the modem to the router's WAN port?

Does the cable company expect a specific MAC address to be connected to the modem? If so, did you successfully clone the HP PC's MAC address?

Have you checked all the router's WAN settings?

After configuring the router did you then power off everything, and then power up the modem, router and HP PC in that order?

And for the second problem, the wireless network, we're gonna need some info there too, before we can give you any specific advice. What's the SSID? DHCP Server enabled? etc. Don't turn on encryption until you've got the wireless network working.

Ok...I am using a linksys wrt54gs router ver. 6 and it says I have to update my firmware (because the power light just blinks and i can not connect to the internet). The company's website

http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin...SZwX3Byb2RzPTAmcF9jYXRzPSZwX3B2PSZwX2N2PSZwX3

says i am suppose to download the new bin file for the new firmware and it says i am supposed to go to this web address to complete the update http://192.168.1.1 So I downloaded the firmware update but the problem is i can not connect to that page. i get an internet explorer can not connect. WTH?! how can I fix the firmware problem if the companies own website for the router is down? any suggestions because i am clueless. If you do have another way please be specific because I am not exactly tech savy. thank you for your assistance.

I'm quite content with the features of the stock firmware that the WRT54G v2 has but theres one thing in particular I was wondering if an open source firmware could provide. I'm wondering if there is a firmware out there that boosts the power to the antenna. my router is upstairs and downstairs the signal is spotty at best. I'm considering buying an external antenna but I was thinking that just boosting the power maybe enough. Does anyone have any knowledge on WRT54G firmwares? Any help would be much appreciated.

Question: WRT54G Firmware

Hey guys.
After some thinking on the matter, I've come to the decision that I'll at least TRY to keep my wrt54g and get it working. However, I've heard a bunch of talk about using aftermarket firmware. I was wondering what one you guys would recommend. I've seen stuff about both Sveasoft firmwares, as well as several others. I'm in the dark as to what to go with.

Any advice?
-Ghent

Answer:WRT54G Firmware

Sveasoft - if you want a lot of features and a fruity GUI
OpenWRT - if you want even more feature but a command line interface (unix users tend to like this one)
HyperWRT - if you only want increased TX power over the stock firmware
DD-WRT - if you like the Sveasoft firmware but think the guy that runs the company is an ass (he is)

Also, if you have a version 4 unit, you're pretty much stuck with openwrt.

Question: WRT54G firmware

I am thinking of changing the firmware of my Linksys WRT54G router to the open source application of Tomato.

http://www.polarcloud.com/tomato

Has anyone done this?

Based on post at lifehacker.com, the hack is supposed to give your router more features and allow you to tweak the router's settings.

http://lifehacker.com/344765/turn-your-60-router-into-a-user+friendly-super+router-with-tomato

Any thoughts?

Answer:WRT54G firmware

There are a number of 3rd party firmware packages for many Linksys models, one of the more popular ones is DD-WRT. I've heard good things about that one, I suspect Tomato is probably a similar thing, though I haven't looked into that particular package.

I have a WRT54G v5 and was wondering if there is any firmware that will speed up things. Transferring files between computers seems to be a tad slow. Also, anything that I could do to help decrease my ping? Or should I just get a new router?

I primarily do gaming online and web browsing and transfer things from computer to computer.

Answer:WRT54G, new firmware or new router?

The V5 is a very crippled router..hardware wise. Yes you can get a version of DD-WRT on it...quite a few steps involved compared to flashing a better model like a version 1-4 with DD-WRT, and not much performance gain...because as decent as DD-WRT is..it can only do so much with so little horsepower.

Best Buy is having a sale this week on their WRT54G and WRT54GS routers ($40 and $60 after rebates, respectively). So, I'm going to try to pickup a WRT54G v2.0 since from what I've read seems to best one to get. I did want to get the GS (for the extra ram), but I don't want any problems with World of Warcraft or timeouts when transferring large files (I've read about both issues on the WRT54GS)

So... I'm wondering which firmware is the best one to use. I don't need anything espicially advanced, but I'd really like to have it so that I could learn more about routers and have a lot to experiment with.

It seems like Sveasoft for $20 per year is the best way to go but please tell me what you think.

I currently have the Linksys WRT54G wireless router with the latest firmware available from Linksys. However I've noticed that there are one or two companies that also make firmware for the Linksys router (ie. Sveasoft Satori v4.0).

My question is would my network be any more secure by going with a 3rd party firmware versus the firmware Linksys puts out?
Thanks,

-Michael

Answer:WRT54G vs. 3rd party firmware...

I would not trust 3rd party firmware, regardless of company / product involved, to be more secure than the original unless there is independent trustworthy verification of it.

In a nutshell, Linksys has better access to the way the hardware really works, so I'd be very hard pressed to assume someone else's is safer.

Answer:help me decide on what firmware to put on my WRT54G..

I believe Tomato works best on supported Linksys routers. The user interface is much easier to use also. DD-WRT works on more models of routers but the UI is somewhat confusing for noobs.

If I decide I don't like the HyperWRT or have problems with it...can I flash back to the regular, official Linksys firmware, and undo the changes? Hi

I just recently downloaded Sveasofts Satori third party firmware for the Linksys WRT54g. Ive only experimented with the output power settings. The power setting is now variable from 0-85mw, with the stock being 28mw. I actually keep it now at about 10mw, as this is plenty to cover my residence and then some.

The recent PC mag stated that this firmware adds around 30 new settings in various categories to tinker with. Im curious to see if anybody else has "hacked" there router using this firmware, and if so, what did they modify, and where you happy with the results?

The firmware can be found here
www.linksysinfo.org

Thanks

I'm still playing with it, but so far I've got everything set back up, and then added QoS to it. I'm still exploring my other options, as well as SSH access.

I flashed my Linskys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware (v.24) so that I could use the router as a wireless repeater for a signal whose origin is some distance away from the router.

It's working, but there's something strange about the signal. My download speed is something like 300 kbps, while my upload speed is 400 kbps. Why am I able to upload faster than I can download? Is there a DD-WRT setting that I should tweak?

Answer:WRT54G as Wireless Repeater Problem (DD-WRT Firmware)

Do you have the transmit and receive antenna on the same one, or on the left and right? You might try changing to either left or right. One might be getting better signal than the other.

Are you connecting wireless or wired? If wired, you might try using it as a client. If wireless, the repeater should work fine.

Not sure why it's not giving you full downloads... What kind of signal strength is it giving you?

Answer:linksys WRT54G help

The speed-booster version is better, unless you plan on modifying it, then it depends on what models your modification works with.

do they both come with the 'single button setup feature' to automatically detect IP addresses etc.

Not that I know of.

If you plan on using custom firmware, or modding the device, you need to be aware that Linksys has changed from linux with recent models to avoid liscensing issues, so you may not be able to modify the device you get unless you specifically shop for a model that you know the modification will work with.

Ok, here is what I am trying to do.

My neighbor has wireless internet and has given me their WPA code so I can use their signal. The problem I have is that my desktop is on the other side of the apt and I bought one of the USB Wireless adapters & plugged it in. It recognizes the network & I can login, however the signal is very weak/low and the signal keeps dropping.

I need to find a way to increase the signal strength to my bedroom. I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router and was wondering if I could configure it to work on my desktop instead of the USB adapter (to gain better signal).

Is this possible and if not, what other things can I do to gain signal strength.

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G help

doesn't work that way. You need a WRE54G on the side of the house that your neighbor is to grab that signal and retransmit it to your desktop. Takes some semi-advanced configuration though... I've always done it manually so you might have luck using the cd that comes with the device.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G-UK

Unfortunately, you have bought the wrong router for what you want to do. Your router is suitable for use with Cable Broadband (NTL & Telewest) where the supplied modem supports an ethernet connection. You cannot use a USB modem with a router and, for ADSL broadband via the phone line, you need a combined "Router/ADSL Modem" which replaces your existing modem.

Question: Linksys WRT54G

Helping my son with an issue. He has a WRT54G router that he's been connected to for about three years. Today his Modem was giving him problems and the cable provider replaced it. They worked him through the registration process while he was wired into the modem. Afterwards, he attempted to connect to the router wirelessly. He was able to connect to the network but not the internet.

His system is an HP Laptop (sorry, don't have the model). He is running Vista home. The diagnosis said the issue was with the DNS.

We checked the cables and connections and the appear correct and good. He rebooted the computer, modem, and router. (Acutally, he unplugged them all and the restarted them. )

We could Ping the router, we cabled into the router and still couldn't connect to the internet. We checked the settings, released the DCHP and refreshed the DCHP. Nothing.

We reset the router to factory default and configured again. Nothing. Cable company says it's the router. Linksys won't provide the answer for less than $50.

Any suggestions?

Question: Linksys WRT54G Qs

Bought the above-referenced router the other day. Set-up was a breeze and after a couple of hiccups, connectivity seems to be solid. However...I have noticed *considerable* increase in download times from the web. For example, on YouTube, prior to installing the router, I never had problems running any videos without lags. Now I lag and stop/start with every one I try to view. I now keep Task Mgr open at all times to observe performance and CPU use. My CPU% pegs with the WUSB54GC.exe process bouncing all over from 0% to ~ 80%. An average webpage stalls on loading. What can I do to get my previous download speeds back???

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Qs

I'm assuming that file is the connection utility that came with the installation CD?

Have you tried disabling that and using the Windows Connection Utility?

Have you scanned for virii or malware lately? Install anything other than the router?

Hello, i recent purchased one of these wireless routers, and I want to make it as as secure as possible. Due to the fact that only one solitary wireless device will be using the wireless connection, is there a way that i can set the wireless signals to only accept my laptop's mac address? or any way at all that i can tell it only to allow my laptop to connect?. There are also two wired pc's connected to the router, but they are ok. I'm just worried about unwanted traffic on my wireless connection.

Thank You,

Question: linksys WRT54G

I am seeking a little help / opinion on the following issue....

Current network config... ISP is Mediacom cable, feeding a Motorola modem, followed by a symantec 100 hardware firewall appliance doing NAT. Then I have a linksys WRT54G ver 2 wireless router, nominally running WPA encrypted G mode to a linksys card in a laptop. Both the firewall and router have current firmware upgrades.

Downlink speed is ~2.5 Mbit/sec when my laptop is directly wired to the firewall via a 100 Mbit/sec eithernet connection. Downlink speed is ~1 - 1.5 Mbit/sec when directly wired to a port on the linksys router. Similarly I am seeing ~1 - 1.5 Mbit/sec via the encrypted wireless link. .... Hope that all makes sense!

Now the question .... does the WRT54G inherently exhibit slow throughput (way less than the marketing guys ratings), or is there a way to configure the unit such that I can get ~2.5 Mbit/sec on the output side of the router? At present my network is stable (no dropped connections) and usable. But ... I want to tweek things, if possible, to access the full bandwidth. Any suggestions on where to explore, and/or is there another wireless router on the market that is more robust.

TIA for any help... Jim

Answer:linksys WRT54G

the symantec appliance/router both nat.

how robust you think you need.
bite the bullet and get a t-3 line, you'll showup everybody you email.

are you really downloading at the values you mention or going to test sites/your own isp, there's a difference.

the fact that you have a 54g router doesn't mean you'll dl that fast.
it depends on your isp/plan if they have basic thru warp drive connection speeds and many will have you pay a premium for the faster connection.

some isp's limit dl to 1.5mb/s and ul 128-768kb. does yours?

My attitude is "if it ain't broke..." and I don't know how old my router is, but it works just fine. Is there a big advantage to go to Wireless N, and is it the "latest?" I use a Roku box, a laptop, iPod Touch and iPad2 with my wifi.

Answer:WRT54G Linksys

It is the latest standard and typically gives you faster and more stable wireless transfers.
However, to benefit from those advantages on all your devices, they would all have to be wireless N compatible.

My dad is restricting my internet use and I would like to know if there is a way to go in the router and change the settings. The username and password is not the default. I have already tried hitting the reset button on the back of the router, and that worked but he caught on and said dont do that. If there isnt a way into the router without knowing the login is there a way to connect to the internet through the cable modem?Or maybe is there a program that overides the restrictions. I just gotta know the login and i know what to do from there.Just give me anyway to connect to the internet. Thanks.

Answer:linksys wrt54g

If it is your dad that is paying the bill then it's up to him.If my son tried that sort of thing after being told that he was being restricted I would disconect him altogether for a while!!!!!!!

Question: linksys wrt54g

I have a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 router attached to my PC. I have had it for a few years now and it has worked fine.My PC had a problem about 10 months back and I had to wipe it clean. I re installed every thing but could not fine the router disk so I went to the LINKSYS website and down loaded the router driver. set up was fine and it gave me WPA password. My pc crashed a few weeks back and the router would not work. I used the same router driver to reinstall it, however this time it did not give me a security WPA password. My internet worked slow in the evenigs, so I checked the wireless connection on a laptop that was connected via wifi and it showed my Linksys connection as unsecure. the internet was slow when other users in the house were not using it, I knew it was hacked by neighbours as there was no password on my wifi set up.My questions are:Why would the router setup do this (no wpa password) and is there a work around?I tried airsnare to track other illegal users, but it made no sence to me, is there any better free software?Does any one know why once the linksys router is setup I can not find its settings, or am I looking in the wrong place, ie, nothing in the program folder, no short cut on desk top or in program list. How do I access the settings to change them.ps. all other devices,(2 x laptops) are connected WIFI my pc is via ethernet, neighbours were connected via wifi, if have disabled the routerI have xp 2002 sp3

Question: Linksys WRT54G

Just got one today
Not mine, building a HotSpot for a friend.
Any ways I have the Sveasoft Satori v4.0 for WRT54G. (my model is 2.0)
But I would really like to know a few things, before I kill bran new hardware.
1. Is its web interface somewhat the same?, screenshots?, can I go back to linksys bin easy?
2. Is the mW safe to change? (heat issues?)
I don't need any of the extras that come with the sveasoft software, I will be running a linux machine that will do all the VPN and bandwidth junk, but the mW upgrade sounds like a good deal.
oh and 3. is there something newer out, I downloaded this long time ago and save it to my hd, thought I might get one of these access points some day

Answer:Linksys WRT54G

Interface is pretty much the same with a bunch of extra settings from what I've seen. I still havent got one yet of my own.

Is 802.11g fast enough to stream IPTV? If yes, how?

Thanks all.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G & IPTV

802.11g has a nominal data transfer speed of 54Mbps, although in practice it is likely to be closer to 30Mbps. Unless you have an internet connection of 20Mbps or more, the limitations of 802.11g aren't going to impact on your internet download speeds.

In any case, you can test for your self by comparing performance with a "wired" ethernet connection to your router, which will run at 100Mbps.

okay, so i've had my linksys router up and running for a couple weeks now and it has been runnign great, up until I flashed it. Before I get into that though, here's my environment:

HTPC - WinXP SP2 fully updated - Dlink 802.11b PCI NIC
Workstation - WinXP SP2 - Netgear WG311 802.11g v2 NIC
Gaming rig - WinXP SP2 - Netgear WG311 v1 NIC
Laptop - WinXP SP2 - Orinoco 802.11b Silver PCMCIA
Each machine was updated and working fine (except for the HTPC). All the 802.11g cards connected at 54Mb/s all the time and had no problems. The HTPC would continuously negotiate from 11 to 5.5 to 2 to 1 Mb/s..not in that order all the time, but would always renegotiate it's speed depending on it was being used.

Then I decide to update it to the latest version for security purposes (2.04.4). I reset it, power cycled it..the works.

Now the HTPC still has it's problems...however now my workstation is having the same problems... It cannot hold a 54Mb/s connection. The only thing that has changed was the flashing of the router. I called Linksys, but their 2nd tier support denies the router has any problem since the 802.11g-v2 NIC connects just fine even though the 802.11g-v1 cannot. The workstation and game station are literally right next to each other, antenaes at the same position.

I know standards are standards...but something is off here.

Am I wrong in continuing to argue with Linksys about this router? No matter what revision of firmware I use, same problems occur.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G oddity

Everytime I've serviced erratic connection speeds on the WRTG54 its been due to interference from other devices. I'm sure you already checked for that though... I've never had problems after firmware upgrades. Reminds me of the client who had his WRTG54 on top of the microwave, next to his cordless phone station, next to his cordlessfax...

I am using a Linksys Router, (WRT54G), and a Linksys PCI Card, (WMP54G). On my old PC I was running XP PRO, on my new one, I'm running XP Home SP2. I took the wireless card from my old PC and installed it on my new one, loaded all the same drivers but I cannot get it to connect. I see the signal strength, but when I try to connect to it, I can't. I've tried both letting windows configure my wirless connections and letting the Linksys utility do it. Neither will work. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy, I took the card out of my new PC and put it back in my old PC and it worked just fine. Do I need to maybe upgrade the firmware on my router to accomidate SP2??? Please help....

Answer:Linksys WRT54G issues with XP SP2?

Hello SybERkrimInAL and welcome to TECHSPOT!!

One: Windows XP Service Pack 2 sucks, it is very strict base on the setting and drivers. Put your wireless PCI card in ur new computer, wait until your Windows finish load everythings, uninstall the Microsoft Driver for Wireless and install your Retail driver. should work from now on.

Two: Make sure your internet or incoming cable or plug stay off the WAN. plug it in #1 instead WAN.

Three: Maybe you should upgrade your firmware, but not yet, if you are willing to format your new computer, install the SP1 first then try it out to see if it works.

I'm trying to hook the wrt54g wireless linksys router up to a westell 2200 dsl modem. I go to the setup dic and run it with out the router in line. It get the config. off my modem and it tells me to hook the router up set it upbut tells me that the router is not connected to the internet. It then tells me to shut the modem down then restart it. It goes thru the setup and tell me the same thing.
Thanks for any help you can give me
Tom

Answer:wrt54g linksys router

The Westell 2200 DSL modem/router combo defaults to LAN address 192.168.1.1. My guess is that the Linksys also defaults to the 192.168.1.x subnet. You can check that by looking at an ipconfig connected to each router; also the manual on your CD will tell you the default. If that is the case, reset the Linksys to factory default settings and pick one of the following options.

1. Change the LAN subnet of one router to something else; say, 192.168.3.x. Change its Dhcp server address range accordingly if it doesn't change automatically. This is probably the easiest change to make, but is the inferior option.

2. Configure the Westell into bridge mode, making it act as a modem only.

3. Configure the Linksys as an ethernet switch and wireless access point.

JohnWill's procedure for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two SOHO broadband routers together.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router.

I cannot connect my R61i using WPA...it gets through everything except the last step, "waiting for IP configuration".  I can connect my older laptop to the same router using the same security, the Lenovo just doesn't work.  I downloaded everything I could find remotely associated with this from the Lenovo page. Does this Lenovo not operate under WPA/TKP or am I doing something dumb??? Any help would be appreciated. thanks, donnyboy

Answer:WPA/TKIP with Linksys WRT54G

Do you have Intel or Thinkpad wireless inside your R61i? Figure out which you have and then go to lenovo.com and download and install the latest driver. See if the driver update fixes your WPA problem. If it does not, update the firmware on the Linksys router. Go to linksys.com and follow the instructions for updating your router.

Hello there, Im looking for help for seting up a pair of wrt54g routers with my laptop. So this is the problem:

I have a Laptop with wifi that I setup to obtain an IP and DNS automatically in the properties of the connection.

I have a wrt54g in my home and another wrt54g at my office, their gateways for Internet are: home: 192.168.1.1 and office: 192.168.148.17. My problem is that everytime that I move from my home to my office or viceversa I have to set up the default gateways of my laptop MANUALLY to 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.148.17, so I want to know what I have to do to change the default gateways on my laptop automatically without setting up manually.
Note.- I enabled DHCP in my routers, so the IPs are assigend automatically to the laptop.
Thanks in advance!!!

Answer:Please help me with a wrt54g Linksys router!!!

first let start with
both routers should be static at best set to 192.168.1.1 as default gateway
disable dhcp all connected machines on this lan should have the numbers start after last digit 1
IE:192.168.1.2 to 255 you can leave dynamic if thats what your provider needs a with dhcp disabled the router and connected machines will not change address's
you don't say how many machine are on each router but should not matter
they to routers are not connected by a cat 5e cable but your trying to connect via wan internet
you need to set up a vpn config
routers have to be able to do this or try link 1
link 2
client software I have not used it
the ip number you need is the isp wan address should see this in status of router
this is the address to connect to other machine

I just upgraded my BEFSR41 v2 to a WRT54G. Connected to it I have only my one PC and my XBOX. I shut everything down, switched the cables over and then restarted. XBOX can get online fine thru the new router but the PC shows a "network cable is unplugged" message, like it would if it wasn't connected to anything. Tried all the ports and still got the same thing. When I hook my PC direct to my modem (BEFCMU10) it detects the connection and when I hook back to the old router it also detects it. Any ideas as to what could be causing my PC to not see the new wireless router at all? Am I missing something obvious here?

Answer:[SOLVED] PC not seeing Linksys WRT54G

So what exactly is in the configuration that does not work? HAve you tried a different cable from the PC to the router's switched port?

Hi there guys, I have put a hacked version of wrt54g firmware onto the box and now have snmp enabled. I was wondering if anyone knows a way of adding an inbuilt bandwidth log so that I know how much I have used, or even a program, other than wall wathcer, prtg and mrtg that is simple to use and provdies totals and graphs, something like DU meter but for the whole network, or even just text infromation in the router. Thanks

Answer:Linksys wrt54g bandwidth

What hacked firmware are you using?

I know a quick easy way to setup the WRT54G routers is the DD-WRT firmware using the RFlowCollector add-on. This is what I am currently using at home. I haven't found a way for the monitoring machine with RFlowCollector to retain any information past a reboot or crash though. So I suppose that's its limiting factor.

I'm sure there are alternate options, but this was the most hassle-free for me.

Good luck!

I am trying to use a second WRT54G router that I have on hand as a WAP. I want it to connect to my main router (which is also a WRT54G), and access the internet so that I can use DirecTV's OnDemand functionality.

I have done everything imaginable to try to make this work and still cannot get my DVR to connect to the internet. I am making a connection to my main router. My DTV receiver shows me that I'm making that connectivity, but when trying to connect to the internet, it consistently fails.

I have opened up ports 80 and 8080 on Port Triggering on the main router as I have seen recommended in DTV's tech forum logs. I have ensured that my second router (the one I'm using as a WAP) has a completely different IP address than my main router. I have plugged them together and successfully "cascaded" them. I have set all of the IP setting on the DTV receiver to be the default settings for my network, including DNS.

I'm not sure what else to do. The fact that I can connect to the network tells me that I've got the connectivity set up properly. I'm guessing at this point, the problem lies in the main router and something that is blocking the second router from getting to the internet.

Any ideas???

Answer:Using Linksys WRT54G as WAP for DirecTV

You said that you are using the second router as a WAP, but you've also said that you have cascaded them. Does the second router have an AP mode, and that's what you're using? The "universal" way to use a router as a WAP is as follows.

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there i... Read more

I set up a Linksys WRT54G for my neighbors, but I left the default password and username (Thought both were blank default, or atleast user=administrator)...Well i guess someone hacked into the router or whatnot and changed the wep...and possibly username/pass...is my only option to hard reset the router? What are the default user/pass for the wrt54g? Thanks

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Hacked...

totally wrong forum, but its admin for password nothing for user name. If they changed the WEP you probably need to hard reset the router. I'm getting pissed that all my damn neighbors have their routers with no passwords or anything, I think i'm gonna go in and change their SSID to PUTAPASSWORDON! or something.

Hi. My roommates and I recently set up a wireless network with the aforementioned router and have been having some strange difficulties. First off, only the person who set up the network has been able to connect to it. Secondly, not only can I (or my other 2 roommates) not connect to this network, it does several screwy things when we try. First of all, in the wireless connections box, in the top left corner when I attempt to connect, it will come up with "Not Connected" however, in the paragraph it describing the network it will say "You are currently connected to this network" and I don't have a connect option at the bottom, I have disconnect. Secondly, when I attempt to connect to the network, after failing, I will be unable to connect to any network at all until I restart my computer. I have been using the free wireless from the burrito place below me, and if I attempt to connect to it after having attempted to connect to our network, I am unable. Anyways, what should I do? Anybody know a quick fix here? Just let me know what information you need.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G Problem, Please Help!

You're right this should be in Networking

OK, in answer to the question about it only saying disconnect even though it says you're not connected - don't worry - it happens to me and I have the same router!

Are all the PCs IPs set to auto?
Have you tried resetting the router with the button on the back?

I have a question for you guys: I used to have a US Robotics USR805416 802.11g Wireless Turbo PCI Adapter and a WRT54G linksys router. Although the connection wasnt always great ( resulting in disconnections etc ) I coult connect to the internet. The PCI adapter broke down and I just bought a new adapter but this time from a different brand ( hoping it would work a bit better -_- ). This was a D-Link 520+ PCI adapter.

Now I installed the software that was included with the card and a get a weak connection to my router ( like I used to get with my USR card ). The only difference is that now I can't connect with the internet
This is extremely frustrating knowing that this new card cost me 50 EUR and I don't feel like buying another one unless necessary.

The distance between the router and the adapter is kinda big but I notice that the antenna of the D-Link adapter is exactly the same as the USR.

I am completely clueless and I hope you guys can help me a hand here.
Oh yeah. P.S. I'm using Windows ME atm (yeah yeah I know it sucks...)

Thanks in advance!

A friend gave me a Linksys WRT54G wireless router. They had it in use for quite some time before it was given to me. I'm now trying to set it up, however when I use 'Admin' for the user name and password the router is not granting me access. It has been some time since the person used it and they cannot remember if the created a password. Is there any way to restore factory settings so that I may reconfigure the router?
