How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

Question: How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

All of my computers are wired... but, I would like to give my retired neighbor (he's 64 years old) wireless access. But, I don't want him or anyone else access to my shared files b/w desktop/laptop. So, should I put it on a different subnet? Do I need a 2nd router? Right now, I have the BEFSR41 with a WAP11 AP on 192.168.1.245 with the router on 192.168.1.1 (both are 255.255.255.0 subnet).

Thanks!

Preferred Solution: How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

I would setup a DMZ, you can do this by using two physical routers or something like smooth wall with multiple nics. If I were you I would setup smooth wall on a crap old box and install 3 network cards into the old computer. Hooking your cable modem to one of the network cards in the smoothwall box will be like pluggin in your cable modem to the wan port on the back of your router. I would plug your wireless router into to the next nic on your smooth wall box. If your neighbor is the only one using the wireless do the following. Enable WEP, don't broadcast your ssid, filter by mac address, and limit the total number of connections to 1. That should keep your wireless rather secure. With the final network card in the smooth wall box attach either a standard switch or even another router. Smooth wall has built in DHCP support and it will allow you to set a range of ips.Hard wire all your home computer to the switch and your in business.

I am looking for hardware for a big wireless deployment for around 100 concurrent users who will be doing light surfing on mobile devices, think tweeting etc.

We will need quite a few APs deployed to cover the area but we are not sure of what kind of models we should be looking at. Will we need to be looking at the high-end such as Cisco?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Wireless setup for 100+ users

I've wondered about this too.. The hotel I work at is using residential routers to issue ip address's for users and after a while the damn thing just clunks out and needs rebooting.. That and if we get over 30 users at a time, the system crash's.. We use linksys routers to do it all. Granted I wasn't the one to build the infrastructure for the service, but I noticed what they used and wonder if we can improve on it...

Can anyone help me regain Security Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder which I lost while looking at the access rights. I mistakenly closed the box while playing with the access rights and lost any access to the file.
I pulled the access rights to the file using icacls they are below.

application data
D:PAI(D;OICI;FA;;;WD)(A;;0x1200a9;;;WD)(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)S:AI

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

Answer:Lost Access Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

Hi All, I am very new to networking and have been searching for hours hopefully to find a solution.

I was particularly interested on aniketchitale's post #4 (http://forums.techguy.org/networking/1072214-wireless-router-100-users.html).

I presently have a fiber internet connection to my office with about 40 wireless users on a single AP. The connection keeps dropping. Probably due to too many users on a single AP?

1. My question is similar to aniketchitale's, can get another wireless router, create a different SSID (eg. router1 and router2), but both wireless routers still connected to the same fiber connection. In other words, I would like to segregate the first 20 users to router 1 and the next 20 users to router 2.

2. By having 2 wireless routers each with their unique SSID, will all the users still be able to access to the same printer in the office?

I would really appreciate if somebody can help me.

Thanks in advance.

So I'm going to set up a wireless access point to allow a small business to go wireless. I'm interested in something that will serve them well. It doesn't need room for expansion, as long as it can support 4 to 7 users right now (about)... not more than 10, though.

Do I need to go with something professional or will the regular Linksys WAP11 be enough?

Answer:Best wireless access point to support 5 to 10 wireless users at the same time?

for more than 3 users, avoid 11b.
get 11g equipment

for 7 users, go for a linksys WRT54G. its semi-professional in that it runs linux and can be flashed with modified firmware painlessly.

i'd recommend leaving it "open" to avoid hassles.
however, if its use needs even the slightest bit of security, use WEP.

I have a few tablet/laptop users on my network who are unable to connect to wireless networks without administrative authority. I would like to give them permission to connect to any and all wireless networks that they come into range with but can't find anything that allows that. I know there is the Wireless Network Policies GPO setting that let's you define which networks they are allowed to connect to, but I don't want to have to have the users collect that information and then pass it to me where I have to create a hundred different wireless profiles that are allowed.

Any ideas?

WIRED readers who use ad blockers, you’ve been warned:

Answer:WIRED confronting ad-blocker users

Google must be feeling pain from ad blockers...
I got an email from a Google employee personally known to me with an invitation to join "Contributor by Google".
"Contributor enables you to see fewer ads online and fund the people who create the sites you use and enjoy...It’s simple: you set a monthly contribution, and then use the web as normal on all of your browsers and devices. Each time Contributor removes an ad on a page you view, part of your contribution is given to that site..."

A typical person will see

Nowhere does it say how much of the monthly contribution Google keeps or if we have any say over which ads are blocked or how much that advertiser is paid for each blocked ad.
And in the ultimate irony, Gmail automatically put this email -which came from a Gmail account- in my Gmail account's SPAM folder.

I?m frustrated that I have to ask for help on this one. :-o I have followed the Arch wiki, downloaded the appropriate driver, and extracted the firmware with b43-fwcutter.

Code:
export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware"
wget http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2
cd broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4/linux
b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" wl_apsta.o
No failures or messages stating anything other than successful. I added the driver to my MODULES in my /etc/rc.conf. and blacklisted the one I do not need to prevent conflict per the wiki.

Code:
MODULES=(. . . !b43legacy b43. . .)
I have set up wifi with no problem on 4 other distros on this same lappy. UE 2.8, Mandriva 2010.0-2, Pinguy as well as Mint Julia. I am currently multibooting with XP Pro, Arch and Mandriva 2010.2 (Wireless works great in both XP and Mandriva) The chip set for my wireless is: BCM4318

Code:
ifconfig wlan0 up
then
Code:
ifconfig
brings up eth0, lo, and wlan0 so I know it recognizes there is a wifi card installed.
When I run
Code:

I get something along the lines of Interface does not support scanning, network down. (Network is not down I confirmed this)

Answer:Any Arch users? Arch wireless setup.....FAIL

Well for anyone reading this thread, it is {SOLVED}
Here is what I did and how I corrected the issue.
First off, I re-installed Arch from scratch. I believe what happened was, through much reading, I installed the wrong driver for the more updated kernel. I believe I installed broadcom-wl-4.150.10.4.tar.bz2 instead of broadcom-wl-4.150.10.5.tar.bz2 which is for the newest kernel.
Once I DL this driver and extracted with b43-fwcutter then ran

Code:
# ifconfig wlan0 up
The light on my wifi lit up. I then installed KDE then installed Wicd. Now when I log in, Wicd prompts me for a password (root password) then alas, I am connected to my router. I set up Wicd with my essid and passkey (WPA/2) and to connect to this essid upon log in. Wicd will also allow you to search for other available networks as well.

Now once you have this set up correctly, make sure you blacklist "!network" in DAEMONS so that you will not have a network hang up during boot up. Learned that real quick as well. You will get about a 45 second hang in verbose when Network comes up and it will then fail. So, blacklist it by putting a "!" in front of "Network" and it will skip that step. Not needed if you have wireless properly set up.

Oh, if a moderator reads this, if you would be so kind, mark this thread as {SOLVED}

Thank you.

All the best,

Ian

Second, try reinstalling drivers for your network card, and make sure your computer is updated. What are you using to monitor the WiFi card? The vista program or a third party program?

Hello everyone,

So, I'm looking for a way to use my laptop's wired and wireless interfaces for different networks. More specifically, I need to use a VPN connection to two different networks - one so that I can use my companies Swyx setup (VoIP I suppose) and the other one so I can RDP to several different computers where I do all my work.

With the current setup this is very inconvenient as I have to choose whether I have my phone active or being able to work remotely.

Is it possible for me to set up my wired and wireless interfaces in such a way that the VPN connection for Swyx uses the wired interface while the other VPN connection (all other network traffic preferably) uses the wireless interface ?

Answer:Using wired and wireless for different networks

This is an interesting topic. I've never tried it what you're proposing. I'm pretty certain you can't use the same VPN client to initiate two different VPN tunnels over two different NICs. I have tried installing different VPN clients onto the same PC with mixed results. It depends on the VPN client you are using. I tried installing two different IPSEC VPN clients and that didn't work so well. It seems the files installed/used by the IPSEC VPN clients conflicted with each other. I have had success with installing a mix of an IPSEC client with an SSL VPN client or different SSL VPN clients. You may be able to get what you want accomplished by using a mix of IPSEC and SSL VPN clients or different SSL VPN clients. As I don't know what type of VPN system you are using, I can only speculate.

But I have not launched multiple SSL VPN tunnels simultaneously. I think even if you get the two tunnels to come up, you would have potential routing issues.

I have 2 networks running. A wired and a wireless. I don't want a user to be able to be connected to both at the same time.

I have tried a couple different location/network managers and none seem to work all that well. I was hopeing there was something out there that would allow a user to unplug from the network and have the wireless turn on, and when they plug in have the wireless turn off. Kinda brianless, as to not create any kind of bridge between the networks. Any idea's or input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance...

Answer:Wired and Wireless Networks

Try this. Go to the configuration for the wireless and then go to the TCP/IP configuration. Depending on the OS there will be an option to configure the INTERFACE METRIC which usually defaults to 1. Set it to 15 on the wireless network. The INTERFACE METRIC bascially is the "cost" of the route. TCP/IP will want to take the lowest cost route to the location. So, when you are wired the wired route will be taken and when unplugged the wireless route will be taken. Let me know how you make out.

Hey Guys,

If you are using Kaspersky on Windows XP, and your Blue Shift is not working, I may have a solution for you. If you go into Kapersky, go to My Security Zone and then application activity. Go to Category and then click all. Scroll down until you find everything to do with Blue Shift ( Half Life Launcher, installation etc). Right click on each of these and change the status to Trusted. The game should work now. I hope this helps I've had the problem for a while and it was driving me nuts. I'd also like to thank the user "fragger" for giving me the idea to look at Kaspersky. User 1 logs in and works does whatever... Doesn't log out but screensaver goes back to user screen.

User 2 logs in (switching users - not logging out user 1) and gets to work.

Sometime later (ie. not right away) and not at a prescribed time, the network stops working.

I try to disable / enable the network adapter and the machine freezes.   Reboot fixes problem.

If user 1 or user 2 is the only one logged in then never a problem.

Anyone heard of this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

hi guys,

really need some help on this one cause i cant seem to get how something that sounds so simple is so hard to do.

i got a client with a workstation that has a local user account on it.
they also have a domain which he has another account on there.

so i have local account joe1 and domain account joe2. now i need to get joe 1 to combind and merge outlook and my docs with joe2. and then get joe2 to stay on the server so that it remains a account that can be accesses on any computer on the domain network. with this in mind the user profile needs to be saved on the server and the profile can be copied to the computer that his sitting at when he loggs on.

anyway i can figure out how to move the local (joe1) account to the server (joe2)i have tried a command moveuser but i keep getting a parameter error on there (error 87) .

i typed it like this

moveuser joe1 (company doamin)\joe2 /c:\\(client machine)

please can anyone help me one this

Answer:migrating local users on xp to domain users on a windows 2003 server.

prob best n easiest way to do it would be to FAST the local profile to the server then log in with the domain profile and FAST it back

working with vista homeprem sp2 32bit here. ran a quick avast scan a few minutes ago, it caught some small-time junk in the temporary internet files (which were purged easily enough), but it also pointed out C:\users\all users as "the system cannot find the path specified". so I open up windows explorer and try to go there. cue the "refers to a location that is unavailable" error message. now, I don't usually need to prod around in there so I'm not familiar with what normally happens, but I know vista loves to have a bunch of directories displayed that are shortcuts it uses for people who leave "hide protected OS files" checked (I don't, I want to see what's where) which really ought to not be shown when you're not hiding stuff but I digress, that's for MS to be groused at after win8 flops.

SO. should I panic that I've had another thing sneak past the security screens (mvp hosts file, spyware blaster, avast's shields, mbam scans)? nothing else seems out of sorts, but one man's paranoia is another man's preparation, and all.

Answer:C:\Users\All Users refers to a location that is unavailable *error message*

I don't remember when, but I availed myself of the free Windows 10 upgrade sometime back. I was using 8.1 and I had, at some point, moved C:\Users and all its associated folders to E:. Everything has worked fine and Win10 didn't have a problem. I did notice that there was still a C:\Users, but the only folder it contains is Administrator.

This was probably not a good move to make. Moving data folders, like Pictures, Documents, etc., is fine, but moving the actual User Profiles was not such a good idea. My E: drive is no longer large enough to hold all my photos and other data. I bought a replacement drive large enough, but having my Users Profiles on E: is now a problem and I want to move them back to C:, only without the data folders.

I can delete all the existing data files from those default folders (I have backed them all up), so now I need to find a way to restore the Users folder and contents to C:. I've tried researching the problem, but found nothing that specifically applies to my situation. The TenForums article, "Relocating Users folder on an existing Windows installation" Seems to be as close as I can get. Unfortunately, this part has made me take pause and ask you all for help:

Do you know what I should do? Maybe Kari's still around and can reply? Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you used the Sysprep method to relocate the Users folder to E: drive, you can use the same method to relocate it back to C: drive. The warning you quoted is when doing this in a clean install, it does not apply when moving Users folder back to C: drive which will always be accepted and OK for Windows.

Follow these simple steps (looks more complicated than it in reality is!):

Create a new, temporary local user account, name it as you wish like "Dummy" or such (tutorial)Change Dummy's account type to administrator (tutorial)Sign out from all other user accounts, sign in to DummyDisable all other user accounts except Dummy, the one you are currently signed in (tutorial). No worries, accounts and their data will remain intact, deactivating (disabling) them temporarily is done because sometimes Sysprep causes existing user accounts to lose Start and Search / Cortana functionality. When we are ready we will again activate (enable) all old user accountsWhen done, open an elevated Notepad (right click and select Run as Administrator) copy the following code and paste it to a new text document]:

Hi everyone,

I am the web masters of a local snowmobile club and our new website is having a few problems with printing. Please take a look at the site, http://www.strathroysnoblizzards.com/Strathroy_Sno-Blizzards/index.html

As you can see it has a black background which when printed on my Mac OS X has no problems with printing (it leaves out black background and keeps the text and images) and prints everything.

The problem is that one of our members are ticked that they can not print the site because of the black showing up above the text and images and I really don't want to change the background because it look good the way it is, so is there any way to change to printer settings or some ideas for him to help him out with this problem.

Second problem is that out of 4 pages, 2 are blank with nothing on it and there is suppose to be text and images on those pages, anyway how to fix this too?

Thanks Guys

How do I merge a wired network with a wireless network so all machines can see each other? All now have good internet access through the router which has a satellite modem feed.

My router (Motorola WR850G) provides a good wired network between two of my machines. One of those machines has a wireless network card, one does not. The router also provides a wireless network. It provides good connections between notebooks in the house and the one box with the wireless card. The notebooks on the wireless network cannot interact with the first box on the wired network.

You will need to connect the wifi router to your Motorola... via the lan ports and have the dchp turned off on the wifi one.

Hi,I have recently setup a wireless network which can share files and allow me to use the printers connected to the "fileserver". All this was working fine until I bought another PC. Its located right next to the fileserver, so I thought 'lovely, no messing with wireless here, just stick a crossover cable on'. This unfortunately is where it went horribly wrong. When I share the fileservers wireless internet connection, to allow the wired PC to recieve internet, it knocks out the rest of the network. The 'shared' folder, which is located on the server is inaccessible to all wireless computers, ie only the crossover connected one can talk to it. Also it won't let me do Remote Desktop Connection when the other one is connected. If you click "don't share internet connection", then all peace is restored and everyone can talk to eachother, except of course the wired one which as well as no shared folder/printer access, also doesn't have internet. So what I'm really asking is that is it okay to use a mixture of crossover cable + wireless connection on the same computer, and if so, could somebody point me in the right direction of it working please :PIf its something horribly complicated, do you reckon I should purchase a wireless adaptor for the new PC? (it just seems a waste of 15 quid when theres a computer with sharable internet sitting right next to it!)Every PC in network running XP Pro, a mix of Media Center (pro SP2) and Pro SP1.Cheers in advance,Alex

I have a Sky broadband router downstairs which has wired and wireless links to workstations downstairs. I have a wired network upstairs in my study. I want to put a router into the study that will link wirelessly to the Sky router downstairs and link the wired workstations to the broadband. What can I use in the study to achieve this?

Answer:Wireless link between wired networks

A Router won't do what you want. Wireless routers incorporate a Wireless Access Point to which Wireless Network Adapters (computers) connect, but two Wireless Access Points cannot communicate directly.
What you need to install in the study is a Wireless Network Bridge, which is a device to connect a wired network to a wireless one (your Sky router).
Have a look at this page for examples.

Hi,

My PC is used for everything. Games, videos etc. Games, not FPS, just lego games, Trine, Magicka. The GPU is more than capable.
My wife currently uses her laptop for everything else. However all games are played with me on my PC. Her laptop is a Toshiba 17" which I have upgraded to a 256 GB SSD. The pc and laptop are side by side on the same 5 foot table.

I saw this video, and I want to recreate a multiseat PC for me and my wife. I think it is better than upgrading her laptop. Also, less items on the same table.

I can't imagine that working very well at all, unless you went VERY high end on the specs.

That concept has been around for a while, but I have yet to see it actually working in reality.

2 Gaming Rigs, 1 Tower - Virtualized Gaming Build Log - YouTube

Is it possible to make a PC for her as well using the components below. I don't want to go make anything bigger. If I need to spend more than $500, I might as well make a Intel NUC computer for her if I have to spend that amount.

My current specs are:
Intel i5-4570
Asus Z87i-Pro
G.Skill Value 8x2 GB
MSI Lightning 770 GTX
960 GB SSD
Corsair TX650M
Bitfenix Prodigy
Dell U2713HM

Thanks

Hi, There seems to have been a problem with a Microsoft Antispyware update, so those of you who have BOTH Norton software, and use Microsoft Antispyware program, had better wait till the next update which will hopefully resolve this:

We are seeing several other posts with this issue, right now, so I am sure it is not a mistake.

This only affects the corporate edition and has been corrected in the latest MS Anti-Spyware updates.

Does anyone know what explorer is showing OneDrive instead of Chad in this case? You can see the first pic that shows OneDrive, but then when you select the folder in the explorer path, it shows the true path is D:\Users\Chad.
Is this a registry setting?

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?

Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.

Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?

I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.

Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

Hi all! I've found a found two windows xp based APPS that'll optimize your performance "Right Mark CPU Utility" is the 1st one and your just set the profiles to the optimal performance... another tip that you could use to optimize your turion 64 is to uninstall the turion 64 update with evidently keeps your processor running at a specified temp with does limit your performance. Another application that you could use to optimize your ati 200m or anyother mobile based graphics card is Power Strip.. Hope's this helps everybody out!

But after I cut the cord and go to Antenna I am just at the range where

But even so I will want to record everything that way when 2 shows conflict during primetime
I will have it to watch when Jerry Springer or Judge Judy is on.
I will also have everything I have recorded off of Cable and I will be Legal

Streaming might be the solution for some people but it comes with a cost.
Either you are paying for services that add up to a higher cost than your cable or dish packages.
You are forced to resort to illegal torrents or sites.

I used this app a while ago to watch and record IPTV on Windows Media Center. But I think they can do it with other sources too. Hello,
I have had a Acer Aspire 5742-6814 for a month or so now. Yesterday it suddenly would not connect to the wireless network in my apartment and won't connect to a wired network either. It says that the wireless drivers are up to date and it just stopped working out of nowhere. I tried connecting to my school wireless network and that would not work either. I have tried some of the solutions that I have seen including:
Resetting modem in apartment.
Checking "Connect even if network is not broadcasting its name (SSID)" (which seemed to work for some people with similar problems).
I really have no idea what is wrong or if it some kind of hardware issue. I can provide any further details. Any help that could be given will be greatly appreciated.

I have two wired networks. First network has about 7 PC's and has the DSL Router on it for Internet. Second network has 1 PC and 1 MAC. Both networks have switches. Now I want to connect the second network and make them as 1 via wireless. It sounds like I need either 2 AP's that can support bridge mode or actual bride equipment. I would like to keep the price around $200. I would also like if the equipment has detachable antenna's.

What are your recommendations for equipment??

One of the users on my network has an unusual problem. He's using win 7 Pro (64 bit). On Friday he told me about this.
Apparantly, when he's plugged in, the LAN thinks he's on a wireless network called "Guest Access". Guest access has internet only and no access to our server.
When he uses his wireless, he can use other wireless networks but is similarly crippled. He only just noticed because he's been working exclusively on his laptop.
I removed the network cards and drivers through Control panel, but that didn't do it. I also removed all the company wireless networks off of his laptop though the wireless management.
However, the LAN still thinks it's on wireless Guest Access.

Guest Accss is only available via wireless - not LAN, so I'm not sure how this happened nor how to get it straightened out.

Any ideas?

I want to connect two wired networks together accross a courtyard probably 100-200 feet apart if memory serves correctly. What equipment would I need to buy to do this?
The good thing is that the courtyard is almost totally empty so there isn't anything to obstruct the signal. I was thinking maybe WAPs have a feature to connect to each other?

Hi, I was a Windows 7 user and yesterday I installed Win 8.1 Pro, which I purchased almost a month ago, just didn't have the time to install (it was better that I didn't have any time) and since then I can't figure out lot of things, one of which is really disgusting. See that my mom and I use the same laptop, she uses it on morning and I at night. And thus I created two user accounts, for example mine is A and my mom's is B. Now when I turn on the lappy it goes straight into my account, without even asking to which I want login! Where on Windows 7 after the welcome screen always there was an option of two accounts, but story has changed. So what should I do to get it back like it was on Seven? I just want each time I reboot the machine there must be an option of both accounts, and I will choose where I wanna login.
PS: Both accounts of my mom and mine are set as admin.

Kindly help asap, she is an amateur and she gets confused when the lappy goes straight into my account.

Thanks.

Answer:Kindly help me with two users account setup [Win 8.1 Pro]

Try this mate: Sign in - Show All Users or Last User in Windows 8
Show all users is the one you'd want. Also, passwords often help solve the issue as well, and are recommended, especially for people with admin rights, because malware may be able to install without your consent, and passwords put a wall up against this.

I don't know if there's much of a way to do this (yet) or not. Your input is appreciated.

I've got 3 computers in my house: mine (a desktop with Win 7 Ultimate), a Win7 laptop and a HP TouchSmart, also on Win7. The last two have Win7 Home Premium.

Basically, I'm trying to get rid of the frustration factor of having to copy files from one computer to the next. I THINK what I want to do, is set up a domain. Also, I would like to set up a NAS on my router probably. What I want to accomplish, is for myself or my mother to login to any one of our computers and be able to see any of our documents from any computer. That is, have the documents be saved on the network.

When my mother goes somewhere with her laptop, I'd like to to have a local copy of her files on the laptop as well. So, I believe I'm looking at some form of syncing files between a network and the local machine.

Is there a way to accomplish this? That is, have Windows 7 login to a domain, have it sync files between the local machine and network storage? Or have it such that it automatically syncs the user's Documents, Music or Videos folder between the two?

I'm JUST wanting to copy files, not applications. I know those don't transfer due to licensing issues on some. I don't know if "Cloud" is the right word for this. Any input would be appreciated, or a link to a tutorial. Thanks.

I have a Tiny computer running windows XP SP2. It had some problems with spyware and Winsock getting screwed but all that has been fixed. However since the PC has been clean I can no longer access hotmail. I can use IE V6.0 to browse the Web quite happily, but when I try to go to the Hotmail website, it comes up saying logging in with Passport and then hangs with a blank white screen. (I can get to MSN.com no probs). I had heard that this might be cause by a cocked up user account so I thought I would try and add another user account and see if that worked. However when I entered control panel and clicked on users it came up blank, even though there are 2 valid current user accounts setup.

Any Ideas?

First, thank you for reading.

I have a NetGear router with a wireless network. I also have a PC and NAS plugged directly to the router. The wired and wireless are on the same subnet. No matter what I do, I cannot get the wireless laptop to be able to ping the wired PC or ping the wired NAS. If I wire the laptop to the router, everything works fine.

I'm convinced there's a firewall on the router preventing access, but for the life of me, I can't find the setting to allow traffic between the wireless and wired network.

Any ideas or thoughts?

Thanks in advance

Ok, I access the internet by connecting to my univerisities wired LAN in my dorm room.
I also hav a Dell PDA with wireless LAN, so i bought a wireless access point and a USB wireless adaptor for my desktop in the hopes of setting up a wireless network and being able to share my university connection.
after a hour or two of setup work, i got my wireless network up and running, but i found that my university internet connection no longer worked. I was able to fix this problem by telling windows to share the internet connection from my wired LAN connection (not sure why this worked, lol, but it did).
Unfortuneately i am still unable to figure out how to make use of this internet connection from my PDA. Any help would be appreciated.
A few bits of info:

1. Usin Win XP SP2, MS PPC2003 on the PDA
2. Linksys wireless hardware, wireless G USB adaptor and wireless G broadband router/access point.
3. I am also unable to access the settings of my access point from the PC unless i disable my wired LAN connection. (i can access the settings fine via the PDA)
4. I've been able to access the internet on the PDA before by connecting to a friends WLAN.
5. All my connections are firewalled, but the problem is identical even with all firewalls disabled

if any other info would help then please let me know,
thanks
Jonny

One of the users in our company turned on bridging on his XP laptop and connected to both the wireless and the hard wired ethernet connection. Within half an hour, his PC which was now acting as a mini router, had bridged the two networks and shut down over 900 people. The wireless stopped working totally. The only way we fixed it was to find him, and have him turn off the bridging.

Is there any way to tell our Cisco switches to shut down his port when the PC is using bridging?

Now, when opening the computer from the Guest Account, my own folders do not appear in the Library, all right. But just below the Library there appears the rest of the computer content, including the D: partition, and any Guest can access all the folders and files there, including my documents.
How can I hide the folders of each User from any other Guests, not only in the Library but also in their actual location in the hard drives?
Thanks for any help.
ACA

Answer:Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

OK this appears to be a simple permissions issue.

go to your root folder on the D: drive and right click the folder and select properties.

on the security tab you should see a list of those who have access to the folder - Make sure that your user has full rights and remove all rights to the "everyone" user group. This when OK'd should xascade down to all files and folders contained in the folder

If you wish you can adjust the rights available to any other particular user on the system - Make sure that you do not remove or change any rights given to system or administrative users unless you fully understand the result

Certain PCs at work have multiple Domain users log into them and they all need XP mode. Because each user is unique, a new profile is created, and for XP Mode to work as I need, I end up having to install XP mode for each user. It's a pain.
What I've done now is to install the XP Mode under the Public profile, configure it as I need, and save the image. When you install for a new user, you're forced to overwrite the existing VM, which I let it do its thing, and when done, I just throw my saved
image to the new user's XP Mode folder, and I'm good.
My question is... Is there an easier way to get this accomplished? Maybe a Registry key or two that you can just insert that points to the XP Mode folder under Public, so I don't have to install per user? Maybe something Global that would only force my to
install once, and all new users logging in would be configured for it automatically.

With my ancient macbook pro I could connect the wireless to one network, and the wired to another, and happily have traffic routing to both from the mac (one connection haveing the default route to internet, the other with a private production network). I cant find any way to do this with the Lenovo.  You can only use wireless, or wired.  I can't find any way to have both active in the lenovo "access connections" or in Windows 7 pro (with which I am not familiar).  Does anyone know how to do this? So I bought an outrageously expensive minidoc 3 (even if you figure the 80 for the PSU, it still costs an additional 140), which must be more than a dumb port replicator for this money.  I was assuming it would be providing a second wired adapter, but alas, it seems to disable the internal one.  An accitional NIC costs aroud 3.  **bleep** Lenovo? So does anyone know any way to get two networking devices active on this box, without buying additional (slow) USB to Ethernet adapters? I could bring the macbook out of retirement and use it as a router, but what a waste of power and space.  I already carry round a second netbook for skype as the mic is unusable for conference calls (I have tried everything to fix) , and use my old dell for watching films as the volume on the W520 is so low (but surprisingly loud when I boot it in Linux).

Answer:connecting to two physical networks with docking station or wireless + wired.

Right now I am docked and connected using both my wireless and wired nic that is hooked up to the docking station. It is definitely possible. The technical term for what you are doing is bridging two networks. Here is a quick tutorial on doing this in windows 7 (I didn't write it, but didn't want to make my own.. )http://helpdeskgeek.com/windows-7/bridge-network-connections-in-windows-7/

I believe that I need to make users on the server so that users can connect to the Server using their own password but I don't know how to do that .

Can someone please tell how to do that.Or give me a link for a basic tutorial for windows 2003 server that explains how to create user accounts on the network.

I did the same thing, Other User can not open those folder, Problem is they can not even access folders with right password. Message pops up "See the security tab". I went in the security tab, entered the password again and remove all the permission.
But this doesn't seem a solution.

So Please advice me if i set the admin permission on folder, How can I just entered the admin password in other user to open that folder with removing all permissions.

Hello,

Trying to get remote desktop to work for our 2 desktops in the house (both Win 7).

Checked how online - went to Computer, turned on remote, turned on "Allow connections only from computers running Remote Desktop with Network Level Auth..."

Then went to "select users".

the box there is empty and below that, it says "XXXX already has acccess" which is the user name on this PC i'm currently using.

I then hit 'Add'. Here's the issue.

When i see video tutorials, etc under locations they can find other names within their network (ie. 1 name for each pc on network, etc or that is what it appears like).

I can only see 'location' as this current PC. Not PC # 2. If i enter username in the Object box, OR the name of the other PC, it says it can't find it.

i'm sure i'm missing a step somewhere but not sure where.

Regards,

SS

Answer:Remote Desktop setup- 'Select users' not showing other PCs on network

Hi and welcome to SevenForums!

I'm guessing the videos showed computers part of a domain(business) network which means domain users. These are different to local users.

For a home setup when you connect with Remote Desktop you need to log on with an account on the remote computer, meaning a local account on the computer you want to connect to.

"Select users" means local users on that machine. That others connecting to it from another computer need to know the local password to.

I watch teh statistics, and it will send and send (I watched as over time, 3,000,000 packets were sent) but it recieves 0. This is on both my wired network AND my wireless (tried 2 different WiFi Nics; G and B)

However, when connecting ot one and only one otehr computer, the otehr computer claims it is sending an appropriate proportion of packets to the compuer that is not hearing them...

I have tried everything except 100% uninstalling/reinstalling networking/NICs, At this point, it is very hard to reformat my HD (though it can be done is there is 100% no way at all to solve this) because my CD burner is being flaky so I ahve to use a USB (1.1) HD to copy some 10GB of data off this PC.

the one thing that is so strange is that the modem (internal mini-PCI) is working fine (minus answering every phonecall, thinking it's a FAX machine). I have scanned with antivirus software, so I am fairly sure it's not that.

If at all possible, I need to get this cleared up because by the end of the month my DSL should be installed and I want to be able to access it on this computer (fastest one I have).

Thank you all in advance for any replies.

Answer:Deaf NICs! Sends packets, wont recieve on wired OR wireless networks!

Do you get an ARP entry for your default gateway, or any other PC's you try to ping on the same network as this dead PC? What does 'netstat -e' tell you as well?

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>arp -a

3 million is a lot of packets to attempt to send without getting a response. It would take days for a PC under normal conditions to send that many packets to unresponsive destinations.

If one PC says is sending the packets and the other says it's not hearing them properly, it's most likely a driver issue on the 'deaf' PC or a bad cable.

I am running W10 Pro x64 1511.

The laptop came with a default account for USER, so the underlying subfolders of Users are in users\USER\.
For various reasons I wanted to have them under my name i.e., users\FP\. So I added another admin user FP with which I login. However, no users\FP\ folder was created and the information is still stored in users\USER\.

Any idea why and how I could get the system to create the FP users folder and store the information there?

Thanks.

Anyone who uses/has-used PC-cillin ... well more to the point, does anyone like this program?

I bought it for "fun", before trying it (smart, I know!)...but it is extremely annoying in so many ways.

It warns you about everything. Granted, that sounds good, but--just browsing the net, it will find dozens of "spyware/ad sites" (and it has always been right thus far), but they are iframes, popups etc. They are everywhere--and a warning for each one!

"Venus spy-trap" they call it. I thought that was funny in itself But really, the one thing on there that is just a PITA: I added two domains to my hosts file, and there is no way to "allow" the changes permanently--upon reopening the browser, their warnings come back. Of course, you could disable the monitoring of the file, but then what is the purpose!

Lastly (thus far), I get meeting notices via Outlook / Lotus Notes. They say these emails are *viruses* because they're in an unusual format! Better yet: the fix...well, you should check it out!

You edit the registry to fix something so stupid...

Ok, end of rant (sorry), but I really am curious--those of you who use this, why?

I posted this message in the W95/98/ME fourm, but this seems like the more appropriate place for the question:

I work for a company that has a small network consisting of one NT 4.0 Server box and around 40-60 client computers, mostly running W95 with a few running W98/2000/ME. Anyway, two managers here have W98 machines, and periodically after they have logged into the network and used different mapped network drives all of a sudden they can't access any mapped drives and they appear to be disconnected from the network (well, they are, as they can't do anything network related). The network is your basic ethernet using simple UTP cabling and hubs. The cabling appears to be plugged in properly, especially since they can log in and be connected to the network for a period of time. Rebooting solves the problem, but that isn't acceptable to my managers, so I have to figure out a way to get it so they don't get kicked off (besides just giving them W95). I have done a lot of research by myself on this, but I can't find any answers....if anyone has any ideas I'll be grateful, and will consider naming one of my future children after you. If you need more info, I'll be checking this board tomorrow throughout work, and will be more than happy to provide you with any other info you need. Thanks

Nate W.

Is there a way to create user files or folders that are not invisible to other users. Invisible to mean the other user see absolutely nothing to do with another user. Users in this case to mean Windows 10 "Standard User" Please note that if solution cannot be accomplished with Home edition, please note that in your reply --Thanks

Here is an example. There are 2 user accounts on my computer, not including mine. The computer has a 2nd drive that I use for all my personal data. When I created a Standard User, that user apparently can see all my folders and files. They cannot open them but they can see the titles. I want to create an environment where each user only can see and manipulate those files and folders they create/own. Other than that the data drive would empty.

If this is something you know about or dealt with I would very much like to hear your thoughts and a concrete and simple way to accomplish this.

Again, thanks
Jerry

Why are there 56 temp users in my Users folder? They don't appear in the regular Windows' User Accounts, so I can't delete them there. Should I just delete all these folders?

I have a buncha users that I have as power users, since the software we use will not work as a normal user... problem is, they can install stuff on the local machine that way. How can I have ONE program run as a poweruser/admin/whatever, but have the rest of the system as a restricted user??

Thanks for your time,
QJ

Answer:Want to block users from being power users...

What's up Qwerty.

In XP, you can choose to run a program as a different user. Right-click the shortcut, select Advanced, then check "Run with different credentials". When you execute the program, it will prompt which user to run it as. You may have to read up on how to make it not prompt for a password each time.

MSDN has an in-depth article on the subject.

Using win10 - 64bit
Logged into cmd prompt as admin.
Cannot see C:\users\all users with the following cmd's

Folder does not show in normal File Explorer window
Run TREE cmd and the All Users folder does not show.
Run DIR cmd for C:\users and All Users does not show
Run ATTRIB -s -h C:\users and still do not see All User folder appearing. Restart after running ATTRIB cmd, but does not trigger reload of folder.

BUT, when I
Run DIR cmd for "C:\users\all users" the folder and files show
Run ROBOCOPY and the All Users folder and its files transfer.

Somehow this folder has become hidden and I am unable to unhide or see it.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Unable to see folder C:\users\all users

Windows does not have a folder All users. It is a link to C:\ProgramData folder, in other words when you run command DIR "C:\Users\All Users", it lists the content of folder C:\ProgramData.

Under Windows 2000, when I reformat the computer, I add administrator user as a network user in the install process. Then, I go in and add local users to the computer. Later on when I want to add network users, it won't let me, the computer just hangs. Any ideas?

Answer:Can't add network users after add local users

Not much information to go on here, but are you signed on as a network admin when you are trying to add the network users?

When you say you add the administrator user as a network user, what are you referring to? Are you adding the Network Administrator account to the local PC?

I am cleaning a laptop out and i created a brand new user name. I deleted the other 2 users using the control passwords2.

So the machine starts and i select the user. Process usage is very high and it says 50, but actual user shows about 9. I click show processes from all users and i find the culprit as well as 50 processes. I deleted the users so there shouldnt be that option.

Why is there more processes if this is the only user, why does it even have the option?

Answer:Show processes from all users, with no other users

All users includes not only other users, if any but the System as well.

My problem is that some users in our home can't access Firefox, or internet explorer in their accounts on our computer. They have to go to my account to access it. I don't know how to fix it and have tried what little I know to do. Everything was fine for a year or so then one day about 6 months ago it just happened. We have Vista as our OS.  I use Firefox. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Just a thought.........Log on as the 'other' user and Install the latest version of Firefox from there. Then try it again.Shadow

Question: MS Access users

Hello All,

Perhaps an easy one today. I have an Access form as shown in the below screenshot. I would like to set this up so that when a number is entered in the 'Project No:' field, it searches a table in the same database, and if it finds a record with that number, updates the other fields accordingly. If it doesn't, I would like it to prompt the user to create a new entry. I was hoping someone could give me some tips; I'm pretty new to Access.

Thanks Muchly!

Answer:MS Access users

I'm not 100% certain but I think you would need two tables within the database with a relationship set up between the two using a common field. Then in the form setup you would need a subform displayed on a form. The relationship link would then mean the data from both tables would be displayed when you put in the linking fields data.

Hope that makes some kind of sense.

Hello,
I come across an issue. I have some powershell scripts in a folder. My demand is that i'd like to share it with remote domain users. But i don't want them to check the content inside.
So, when i set the NTFS permission for the users,  I removed the read permission only retained 'Traverse folder/execute file" permission
and "list folder/read data" permission. however, the remote users could access the folder remotely but failed to see any scripts inside the folder. just looks like the the folder is empty.
My questions is if my requirement is viable with NTFS permission.

Hi..., Wondering if someone could help me with my problem?Users other than me(admin account) can't access the c drive., My brother and sister complains that they can't copy, move & delete anything when they use their account and a message box "C:/ is not accessible ACCESS IS DENIED" always pops up when they do. Their accounts are in the USERS Group. Is their a problem with the permissions? coz i don't remember changing anything about the permissions of the user group. And this is the irritating part, I tested the problem with creating a new account with Administrator privileges and tried to copy files from a flashdrive to the account's documents. Even with a new admin account the same message box appears.Hope someone could suggest some solutions for this problem...

Answer:Other Users Can't Access C: Drives

Have you been into the permission set up to see exactly what the permission are set for drive C: That will tell you whether it is a permissions problem or not which it Access Denied usually is.How you do that is dependent on which version of Windows XP you are using, Home or Prof. If it is home it can only be done from Safe Mode. You need Administrator privileges to do it.Stuart
