Linux Mail Server (Web based Email Support)

Question: Linux Mail Server (Web based Email Support)

What do you guys use for a Linux mail server that also has built in web mail support? I need something that...

a) Will run on Fedora Core 4
b) Is Free
c) Is not a huge pain in the ass to set up and maintain.

I found Open Exchange but don't know if it's any good...

Preferred Solution: Linux Mail Server (Web based Email Support)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Linux Mail Server (Web based Email Support)

What exactly are you wanting to do?
A full Exchange type setup, with shared calendars, and etc?

There is no 'single' package (with the exception of maybe openexchange heh) that will do all of this. If you need to have the full features of something like Exchange, be prepared to do some legwork, as you will have to install and configure many pieces of software.

For a basic mail server, the system is made up of various components and softwares that you will have to setup:

A good MTA (mail transfer agent -- IE mail server) I recommend looking into is Postfix
Next,
If you want users to be able to check mail via a webmail system, then you are going to need two things:
A webmail client, for which, I suggest Squirrelmail

In order for squirrelmail to work, you need to have it backended with an IMAP server. I personally use Courier-IMAP

Now all of this might not make much sense, so here are some links to mail server tutorials that you can read through (all are for linux, the setup should be similar on Fedora for you)

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/virt-mail-howto.xml
http://postfixwiki.org/index.php?title=Virtual_Users_and_Domains_with_Courier-IMAP_and_MySQL

Also, look at the postfix webpage, http://www.postfix.org/docs.html , and look under the section labeled "POP/IMAP and the kitchen sink" for links to many more good how-tos

Microsoft is "upgrading" people's  @outlook.com, @hotmail.com, @live.com, and @msn.com accounts, to a new Outlook.com (built upon the latest Office 365 infrastructure), which is INcompatible with Live Mail 2012 (and presumably older versions as well):  Effective late June 2016, Windows Live Mail 2012 will no longer synchronize emails, contacts, and calendar events from these email accounts.
People who use Windows Live Mail 2012 to connect to other email services, including Gmail, Yahoo Mail, or other services that use POP3 or IMAP protocols, do not need to take action.
Is this another veiled attempt to force users to "upgrade" from Windows 7?
Users can still access their e-mail via their web browser(s).   Or they can use the new Outlook.com and/or a Mail app on Windows 8.1/10

Can someone PLEASE point me in right direction as to which version of linux to get, where to get it, what programs to install on it, and newbie guides to publishing my content so others can see it straight from my home computer? Help is very much appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:would like to create linux-based server

www.apache.org
There you can download the apache web server, arguably the best on the market. It comes with a built in administration manual pages. There should be TONS AND TONS of info on google.

As for which linux distro to use...I'm fairly sure it will run on just about any. I'm not sure which to say is "the best". I would imagine one with a good level of security would be most appropriate for a web server.

hello all,
I'm facing problem to bootup OS installed on different drives on my rx2660 HP integrity server.
System F/w :3.01 {4739]
BMC version:5.21
MP version :F.02.17

I have 3 hard drives on my server. I created Raid 0 on all the drives as below:-
LD #1 Raid 0 146GB (dev/cciss/c0d0)
LD #2 Raid 0 73GB (dev/cciss/c0d1)
LD #3 Raid 0 73GB (dev/cciss/c0d2)
I installed Rhat5.1 on LD1(c0d0).After finish installation, i could see the RHat5.1 boot entry on the EFI boot manager and I could boot up. Then I installed RH4(c0d1) and Suse10(c0d2) on my other 2 drives. Installation was completed successsfully but when it reboot after installation complete, I can't boot up to the OS installed on other drives although the boot entry of Rhat4 and Suse 10 appears at EFI boot manager. When i select the entry(Rhat 4 or Suse 10) it says file not found.
When I boot up to Rhat5.1, installed on the 1st drive and mount c0d1 to /mnt/floppy, i could see the files that has been installed on other drives.

Then I tried installing RH4 on the same drive on different partition on LD1 (C0d0) and i can successfully multiboot.I could also install Suse10 and boot if I install on the 1st drive different partition.
I'm not sure why I cannot setup multiboot when I install the OS on separate drives. Is there anything I need to do for the EFI boot manager to detect my other drives?

Even at EFI shell, when I switched to fs3: I only can find the files installed on the 1st drive.

What code do I use to link a picture into a mail message?

HTML?
Something else?

I need it to be visable in multiple mail readers...

Thanks in advance,

( I did a google search first). Is there a way to have an email account that is not web-based? For example, when Outlook uses POP3, it connects to my gmail account to receive mail. Is there any server that will take email directly to me. Instead of to a web-based email account, and then downloaded by a mail client? Are there any mail clients that support this?

Hi guys, a little background before I ask my question...

As you might be aware I'm an editor here at Techspot, that means I receive allot of mail, both legitimate and spam...

Using an e-mail-filtering program like Cloudmark SpamNET did make life allot easier for me. With one apparent drawback being that when I download mails from my Techspot account those mails are deleted from the server.

Since I'm quite often on the move and need access to my e-mails wherever I happen to currently be this proved to be quite a hassle, since I became locked to my home PC...

So therefore I setup my web based Yahoo account to also retrieve mail from the Techspot account and that works really good, now I have the freedom I want but with the drawback that was fixed with my other solution of using SpamNET? Catch 22 anyone?

If I don't check my Yahoo account every day those free 6mb of storage will soon have been filled up by both legitimate mail and spam. (Not to mention how much worse this has become with the recent Sobig.F virus where every mail is 100kb in size...)

Thus now I have the mobility but no spam filtering, so I also have to read about how to best please my partner which someone else than me seems to think they know better while looking for the legitimate mail...

What I had in mind was to set up my own SMTP server which I will have 100% control of, now the only question is what sort of software I should use... I.e. do you know of/have you tried a g... Read more

Answer:Preferably free; web-based e-mail server?

i would HIGHLY suggest using a linux server for this need. While offering the SMTP service you need, you will have a higher secruity and a better feeling about it not being down more than its up if you were to run windows.

Running linux server also provides you with protection(better than windows offers) from hackers, and most virus's that were made on Win32 OS's. So you wouldnt have to worry about your linux box being virused to all heck.

And, linux is FREE, and open source.

You also have the option of leaving messages on the SERVER itself and not actually downloading them.

As far as spam mail goes..there are some good ones and some bad ones.

Postini is what my local ISP uses, i have done NO research on this and quite frankly not even sure if its linux/unix compatable.

you can probably do a search on sourceforge.net or tucows com for a nice spam filtering system.

Hope this helps you ease some of whats on your mind.

Question: Linux Email Server

Hey guys,

I started my current job about 2 months ago, and we have a slight legality problem on some of our servers. The Exchange server we use (2003) is a development licence. (No Exchange CALs)

I'd like to start testing a linux server to replace this, and I probably have no budget. I have plenty of hardware to do this with, but to ask for money for software probably isn't going to happen.

Anyone here use a Linux mail server? What software do you run? If it cost money, was it worth it?

I'd like something that interfaces with Outlook as much like Exchange as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Hey All,

I am working on a server and recently two of their mail accounts have began not sending out email. When I first looked into the outbound box, the mail I sent out is still pending. It usually takes anywhere from 1 minute to several hours to for it (Argosoft Outbox) to be delivered. Also, when I send out a email to that particular a particular address, it will just sit there.

I have also done scans with AVG 8.0 and found that it had I-Worm/Bagz.D infection. I quickly quarantined that infection as to not allow to infect other files on the pc / server. I have also done a Hijack This Scan, please can someone look at this and tell some about what I am making out.

If you can get mail but not send it, it sounds like a configuration problem. Are you sure the servers settings are correct in the pc? You could have an extra space or something.

As most of you are admins, I hope I can get some help.

I have my Debian box, running exim4. The smtp server is a smarthost->smtp-server.houston.rr.com and this works. If I'm on my home network I it will go to my yahoo address, my work email, where ever.

I can check my email from anywhere.

My question is, I'd like my server to be setup so I can use it from SMTP from anywhere. Either when I'm at the university, when I'm at work, or if I'm on the wireless lan at starbucks (Well, I'm not really like that.)

So, what do I need to do for this to work?

This is what I do to configure my exim4:

myhost:/home/user# dpkg-reconfigure exim4-config
Configuring Exim v4 (exim4-config)
----------------------------------

The Debian exim4 packages can either use a single monolithic file /etc/exim4/exim4.conf.template) or about 40 small files in /etc/exim4/conf.d/ to generate the final configuration.

The former is better suited for large modifications and is generally more stable, whereas the latter offers a comfortable way to make smaller modifications but is more fragile and might break if modified extensively.

If you are unsure then you should not use split configuration.

Split configuration into small files? no

Answer:Setup an email server on SUSE Linux 10

Since SuSE 8.1 the distro includes Cyrus imap, and it looks like you have it working enough that it answers you on the proper port. There are specific setup examples in the /usr/share/doc/packages/cyrus-sasl/doc and /usr/share/doc/packages/postfix directories. These should be able to get you well on your way. I'm sure we can help if you have specific issues later.

Hi,
this is continuation of
this issue I am still not able to resolve. I have already tried Microsoft Answer Desk in "connect to outlook.com with applications and devices" category without any success. The told me they don't support applications related issues.

Where can I get support for the server side of the Mail / Calendar / People apps ?

Short description of the issue: Windows 8.1 Mail app push notifications stopped working 20 Jan 2016 on
all my Windows PC/Tablet devices for my Microsoft account. The same behavior is with Windows clean install so it must be a
server side issue.

I have created Word document with detailed description of the issue (that nobody has read yet I think), the open public anonymized version for support team is here

First I tried Postfix, then Sendmail and now I'm on Exchange. The same problem persits, I cannont recieve mail on my server. I can send email anywhere but that is all. Right now I have a default setup in Exchange. It connects fine to my domain controller and all looks well. Like I said it is a default install of Exchange 2000 for the domain bnettech.net. FQDN mail.bnettech.net. I haven't added any options or set any paramaters in Exhcange, and all I have done is added some user mailboxes and that is it.

Story: I have registerd a domain name a while back - bnettech.net from Dyndns.org. It is "custom" (pay for) so I don't need to add the bnettech.dyndns.org to it. My IP is of course dynamic. Then I noticed that my ISP blocks ports 1024 and below (I think because my webserver cannot connect on port 80 so I set it up for port 8080 and forwarded port 8080 to 80 for my webserver and all works fine). Anyway, my ISP blocking lower ports is OK, dyndns offers MailHop Relay. This setup will allow their server to relay email to your server on port 2525 or whatever to get around the issues of ISPs blocking lower ports.

The mailhop relay service adds an MX record to my DNS zone: "bnettech.net MX mx1.mailhop.org"

Full DNS zone: [www.bnettech.net "A" 216.145.85.xx]<>[mail.bnettech.net "A" 216.145.85.xx]<>[bnettech.net "A" 216.145.85.xx]<>[bnettech.net "MX" mx1.mailhop.org]<>[mail.bnettech.n... Read more

Answer:major email server setup issues (Linux and Win<>cannot recieve)

I just did a telnet to port 2525 of bnettech.net looks good here is the response from your server:

220 mail.bnettech.net Microsoft ESMTP MAIL Service, Version: 5.0.2195.6713 read
at Wed, 28 Jul 2004 08:53:08 -0400

BUT I can not test if I can telnet to port 25 since I am at work and they block it.

edit: dyndns needs to forward ALL port 25 requests to port 2525 for your stuff to work. Yes the ISP can block ALL traffic on 25 and many do to cut down on spammers.

Ok I sshed to my home machine and I get connection refused anytime I try to telnet to port 25. Are you sure you have the dyndns setup correctly?

I have been receiving this email today, a few times coming from different addresses as follows:

Do not reply to this message

Dear Customer,

Our robot has fixed an abnormal activity from your IP address on sending e-mails.
Probably it is connected with the last epidemic of a worm which does not have patches at the moment.
We recommend you to install a firewall module and it will stop e-mail sending. Otherwise your account will be blocked until you do not eliminate
malfunction.

Does anyone know what this means and what I need to do. I've looked up some of the websites sending them and they mean nothing to me, not related to my website at all.

Also my website traffic increased from about 150 a day to 3000 a day the last 3 days, most traffic coming from a 'buy targeted traffic' website. I haven't joined this, other people do promote my product so its possible someone else has joined it. So I'm not sure if that's related to these emails or not.

Can anyone help

Answer:Mail Server Report Email - Please Help

Was that the complete email message or was there more? Did something ask you to click on a link or to install anything?

Did you check with your ISP to see if they really sent it. I would expect not unless they have people who don't read and write in English very well. I highlight in bold some parts that are poorly written or that are just plain incorrect.

I'm in a new office and we have an existing server. I have the Server IP, the ME Server, Mailbox, Modem name, where it's attached, the PC name, the domain name. Whew!

What I need to know is, we are setting up a temporary station down the street where some applications (can't be brought here, nope too easy!!!) are kept and we need to set up a PC there to access the e-mail at this location. This location has their own internet connection.

I'm not sure how to go about doing this. I can slightly recall setting up my PC (at home) with STMP or POP3 information, but I'm not sure how to do this with an existing internet connection.

And of course, my bosses expect miracles. They say; "We believe in you! You can do it!" I say; "You're too bloody cheap to have a tech come in."

Can anyone help a girl out?

Do you actually have to download the e-mail to the computer? Would using the web-mail interface be sufficient for your needs?

I received this email from goodness knows who:
Mail server report.

Our firewall determined the e-mails containing worm copies are being sent from your computer.

Nowadays it happens from many computers, because this is a new virus type (Network Worms).
Using the new bug in the Windows, these viruses infect the computer unnoticeably.
After the penetrating into the computer the virus harvests all the e-mail addresses and sends the copies of itself to these e-mail
addresses

Please install updates for worm elimination and your computer restoring.

Best regards,
Customers support service
What does this mean?
I have Thunderbird as my Email .
Thank You.

Answer:Email sent saying mail server report??

I have seen another thread about this and the conclusion that was reached in that case was that this was probably a variant of the Stration family of email worms. Most antivirus programs have definitions for these things now, although they seem to mutate daily. Have you scanned this with your antivirus?

Does the email contain a clickable link to the 'update' it refers to? Whatever you do DON'T click on it, just quarantine or delete the whole thing.

Can anyone walk me through how to transfer my email from my 1and1.com webhost to a local mail server?

Specifically, I have a starter linux package with 1and1 and would like to keep the website hosted there, but have my mail all go through a local kerios mail server. So if someone went to www.mywebsite.com they'd go to the 1and1 site, but if they sent me an email at [email protected] it would go through my mail server.

Basically, I'm just wanting to know how to initiate the "transfer" because I am not actually the one who will be administering the mail server. I orginally set up the web site for someone and set their office up with POP email accounts through 1and1, but they're now interested in using some groupware stuff that their local IT admin's kerios mail server can provide.

Upgraded laptop to XP SP2 and now I cannot send email from my companies 2003 Exchange Web Mail server. I have turned set the web site URL to be open for pop-up blocking and I've even turned off pop-blocking in IE6SP2, but I still cannot send email. I checked MS KB but their tips didn't work (pop-up blocking).

Do I need to install WebMail client (either Premium or Basic) on my laptop? I can still send email from another laptop running W2KPro and it doesn't have WebMail Client installed.

Answer:Cannot send email from web mail server on XP Client

So you use the Outlook Web Access to send email. And you cannot send. Can you receive email? This could be caused by a number of things. Do you have a firewall application installed or is Windows Firewall running? Have you run Windows Update and install latest updates and patches? Try this first, there may be a known issue that has been resolved with an update that was released after or due to an issue with SP2.
Have you cleared your Cookies and Intenet Temp Files? To do so Open Internet Explorer-->Tools-->Internet Options and click Delete Cookies and Delete Files. This will clear all the saved settings for all websites you accessed including cached copies. Also, you may want to delete the history, but before doing so, add frequently accessed sites to Bookmarks or Favorites. Then click Apply and OK and then try.
Also try different IE security settings to see if that helps, with the application of SP2 a lot of new security settings were incorporated into both the OS and IE and some of the default settings were very restrictive.
Try these, and if no success, we can try some other things.

Answer:What Is A Good Linux Compatible Socket A Mobo W/ Lan Support In Linux?

I'm not sure myself. There are a few boards that claim to be good with linux that i've seen. I can't recall them at this time. I'm going to be building 2 linux machines soon. I've been wondering the same question but to no avail. I recently purchased a network card for a windows machine i just alterred. The brand is Belkin. In the manual it mentions that it's compatible with LINUX/UNIX.

I haven't tested out the card yet, but if the card seems good/decent in windows, then i'll perhaps try it out in one of the linux machines i build soon. You might want to look into it yourself. Dont know if it really is compatible... but its worth a try... and it only sells for 15 bucks.

Windows 8.1 Mail app push email notification for Outlook account, Calendar and People automatic synchronization stopped working yesterday (it was working for one year). I haven't changed anything. Note it stopped working
on two different devices at the same time. The only way to get new email messages is manual synchronization by the Sync button now. No error messages in Event log, I also tried to reinstall all three apps, no change. Note that calendar push
notifications still works (on both device).

I believe it is a server issue because TcpView now reports livecomm.exe process connection to
dub407-m.hotmail.com server on both devices affected while it was something like
snt000-m.hotmail.com (I don't remember the number exactly) before when it had worked. It seems to be my Microsoft account specific issue because notifications on other Microsoft account where Mail, Calendar and People apps are connected to
col403-m.hotmail.com server still works.
Short summary:

My MS account until 20 Jan 2016 - connection to snt000-m.hotmail.com - notifications/synchronization workedMy MS account from 21 Jan 2016 - connection to dub407-m.hotmail.com - notifications/synchronization does not workOther MS account - connection to col403-m.hotmail.com - notifications/synchronization still work

I don't know where to report it and I also don't want to create a new Microsoft account to "fix" that hoping it won't be redirected to the dub407-m server node again.

Right now they use virtual email accounts (not for all users) provided by telecommunication ISP.

If they want to configure one of their stand alone server (windows 2003) as mail server, similar to link below

How many user accounts we can create with that stand alone box ? Is the stand alone box sufficient for 50 users accounts ?

Answer:Windows 2003 configure as a mail server , how many email accounts can handle

I am not familiar enough with Windows 2003 client access licensing but I am pretty sure there is no limit as to how many active directory users you can create as long as your hard drive space permits. However due to M$ CAL, you may need to buy additional licensing to support more users or device to connect simultaneously, as far as I'm aware, the standard version of 2003 only support 5 CALs. I stay away from M$ licensing by moving to Linux, you can run Postfix or free version of Open-Xchange for email server all equivalent to M$ without the licensing fee. However it takes more skill and time to do it in Linux.

Hello,
two weeks ago Microsoft did some updates on Outlook.com server, the result is that Windows 8.1 Mail app no longer allow to add any additional account (including IMAP) other than default Outlook account associated with the Microsoft Account. Existing additional
email accounts are no longer accessible. Reinstallation of the Mail/Calendar/People apps won't help.
Thje issue is confirmed by at least 50 users in various posts in

Answers forum. Please, do not refer me to ask for help there. I have feeling that I talk to bots there because their robotic answers (reinstall, scan disk) does not make any sense.

The bug is caused by a Microsoft server update. Note that Windows 8.1 are still officially supported and existing features like IMAP email accounts are
supposed to work.
There is no way to report the bug to Microsoft ! Feedback application works for Windows 10 issues only and the Feedback option in Windows 8.1 apps no longer works.
Thanks for any constructive answer.

Hi, i've recently been doing work with an internet cafe and we need a solution for re-imaging. I have an image created with ghost but I have no software to use to distribute it and the client PC's only have CD-R/RW and the image is 4.3GB.

I tried to use Ghost recovery disk to map the network drive where I have the image but the recovery disk didn't couldn't detect my network card (I'm guessing it didn't support the specific NIC of the client PC's)
I need a software solution that will let me re-image any computer from a centralized location (server) over the network. We have about 40-50 client PC's. So far we have been doing manual installs (The entire server crashed and took all the old software with it so we're starting from scratch)

If anyone could help, we could open this business a lot sooner than expected with software that can do this!

Thanks

Answer:Need: Server-based re-imaging application (Remotely Re-image clients from server)

A free solution would clonezilla or even RIS or WDS

Dear Fellow Experts of IE6,
I am now facing with a very peculiar problem.
I have a Fujitsu Siemens Lifebook S6130 notebook running on Windows XP Version 2002 SP1. The IE6 was bundled with the OS. My current IE version is Ver 6.0.2800.1106.xpsp2.050501-1526.
I have a 4Mbps broadband linked to a Linksys WRT300N Ver 1 router.
My problem started since about 3 weeks ago, and during that period I did not install any new hardware or software. The main problem is everytime when I tried to reply to an e-mail from any web based e-mail service like Yahoo Mail, GMail and others by pressing the "Reply" button, I will get a error "Page Not Found" error. The same problem occurs when I tried to forward my e-mails. However, I have no problem whatsoever in reading my e-mails, surfing the internet or downloading any files. The speedtest show I almost always have a 4Mbps download time.
I have a desktop with IE 7 having the same broadband connection through the same router and there is no problem at all with replying or forwarding to any e-mail. I also borrowed another much older notebook with IE6 and also do not face any problem with replying or forwarding to any of my e-mails.
I have tried all the remedial measures posted at http://support.microsoft.com.kb/326155 except meddling with the registry, a step which I am uncomfortable with, but failed to rectify the problem.
I did a virus and antispyware scan and all came out negative. I have also tried system restore and b... Read more

I have tried both Clark-Connect and IPCOP, and whenever I set them up, there is no way to figure out how to tell the difference between which adapter is setup as the RED or GREEN adapters. Then, If I do figure out, the system won't connect to the internet. I set it up to DHCP just like I have it with my Linksys router, and It still won't connect. Its driving me nuts!!!

Answer:Can't get any linux-based firewall to run!!!

Are both adapters the same? If so, if you log onto the console with root, run "ifconfig". This will show you the MAC addresses of each interface. The MAC should be printed on each card. Your other option is to connect both interfaces to the internal network. You should be able to get to the web interface. Then, unplug on and see if you can still navigate the web interface.

So I just stood up a DNS zone using bind9 in my Linux environment. The main use of this environment is to allow my other Linux servers to connect to one of three openvpn servers and update their DNS records using nsupdate.

I currently have this working with bind9 having slave servers forward nsupdate requests to the master server. My concern is what my options are if the master server fails? I haven't had the time to truly investigate except that it sounds like bind9 does not provide any official support for a multiple master zone.

Does anyone know how to have two masters share one zone and keep both servers up to date on records within 5 minutes?

Answer:Linux based multiple master DNS

Bind 9 does not provide this functionality officially.

Since you already have slaves, the worst thing that will happen if your master fails is that your dynamic updates won't work. Which, if you're only using the setup to implement dynamic DNS, is useless, I agree.

A possible solution is a set of hot spares. Put an rsync in the cron on the master to push the latest zone files to the hot spares.
You're going to want to rndc freeze before pushing the zone, and rndc thaw after doing so, on the master
Depending on the number of updates you have, this *may* take some time, which may cause a missed dynamic update.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my Gateway CX210X tablet. It had been running XP and I tried to upgrade to Vista. The Vista install failed, it would lock up at the end. I tried to go back to XP and it wouldn't load because it could no longer recognize the HD. I spent two days screwing around trying to get one or the other to load.

I finally nuked the HD and loaded ubuntu. In less than an hour I'm up and running. It's faster, it takes up a fraction of disk space, and it's free.

The only issue is that he tablet function doesn't work. This isn't that big a deal because I seldom used it. However, I am curious if anyone knows of a Linux based tablet utility that would be compatible with a Gateway?

Anyone know of a good Linux based app/OS that basically acts as a VPN concentrator? I want to be able to create VPN accounts and give them granular access to only certain IP / Ports. I'm not too fussy about the authentication method, but a standard Linux user would be great.

Anyone know of something like this? I currently use OpenVPN but I'd like to get more granular and be able to give accesss to only parts of my network to various users. This is a home based network. I'd be using this for varous development projects where I may want to give someone access to a certain dev server through a VPN without them being able to access the rest of the network. Technically they could ssh into said server then go to another part but that's a whole other story, and I have other means to secure that.

At work we have a Uroam, which is pretty cool, I'm looking for something like this, but free (does not need to be *AS* advanced, but you know). I don't care about web based access stuff, just want it to use a simple enough client where the user enters the server, user, and password.

Answer:Free linux based VPN concentrator

Will PFSense do what you want?

Also a great open source SSL VPN product was "SSL Explorer"...but a year or two ago Barracuda bought up that project and it's no longer free. However...a fork of it was continued under the name "Adito". Do a little Google 'n Sourceforge search. I ran SSL Explorer at our office for a while, was a cool product...pretty much clientless..done via browser.

It seems like my router is dieing and im looking to replace it. I have tried running Clark Connect on an old pc of mine that machine has no DMA support or somethin that prevents it from installing correctly( I used some kinda work around when installing Gentoo to mess around with). Would IPCOP or Smoothwall or m0n0wall have these same work arounds? Or would I have to go with a purchased-firewall?

Answer:Linux Based or Purchased Router?

One average it seems this question is asked about once every hour on here... searching would reveal quite a few people in the same boat as you along with plenty of recent advice on which router to go with, etc.

Your question is only going to boil down to personal opinion... if you have an extra box laying around that you wouldn't mind dedicating to be a firewall then go for it as you seem intent on at least playing around with the idea. To answer the other question - I've installed m0n0wall, IPCOP and Smoothwall on everything from 386's to P4's... I don't anticipate any problem.

IF you're looking to purchase a router it seems the consensus around here is either the Dlink DGL-4100 (or DGL-4300 if you need basic wireless) or the Linksys RV082. Both are on the upper end of SOHO performance branching into small business but they do come with a price tag. The difference between these guys in the $90-200 range though is astounding when compared to other cheaper SOHO routers; The last time I had to shut my DGL-4100 down for maintenance it had 40'something days of uptime.

It's time for a "war"!

For this round, the user audience is from new users to Linux to intermediate users of Linux.

All distros are built upon the Ubuntu Family, offering several desktop environments (DE) to custom built ones.

This time no poll will be selected. Instead, in hopes to achieve not only discussion but helpful feedback for anyone reading this forum, we will do a slight different thing. Feel free to research on Distrowatch, reviews up on Distrowatch and even on personal testing and usage preference to list:

*Overall distro that works best out of the box for new user (list name of distro + DE)

*Ease of use in general for new user (list name of distro + DE)

*Lowest Resource usage distro (list name of distro + DE)

*Drivers support:

To note: some distros only offer specific DE, so some cannot simply be compared to others, but any feedback is welcome. Also, all of them have access to Ubuntu's repositories and can be maintained/upgraded accordingly.

I got some questions for those of you with Linux based pc's that you use as routers.

1st. Do you just use 2 nics, one to be hooked up to cable/dsl modem, and the second to go to a switch (if you have multiple devices)? And the linux pc does all the dhcp settings and port forwarding?

2nd. How do Linux routers handle torrents? (my router dies hard when I use torrents). And will using a switch cause any slow down like what happens with some routers?

3rd. Does using 2 pci based nics create a problem since the 2 cards have to compete for bus bandwidth and timing (irq?)? Would 2 pci-e based nics be better since they don't compete for bandwidth and there isnt a timing issue?

4th. I have a Celeron 700mhz, 512mb sdram, 2 10/100 pci nics, would this make a decent router with a switch placed afterwards? Would it handle torrents well?

1st. Do you just use 2 nics, one to be hooked up to cable/dsl modem, and the second to go to a switch (if you have multiple devices)? And the linux pc does all the dhcp settings and port forwarding?

I have 3 nics, WAN, LAN, and one with massive restrictions for Wireless.

2nd. How do Linux routers handle torrents? (my router dies hard when I use torrents). And will using a switch cause any slow down like what happens with some routers?

Depends on config/system specs, that switch won't slow anything down.

3rd. Does using 2 pci based nics create a problem since the 2 cards have to compete for bus bandwidth and timing (irq?)? Would 2 pci-e based nics be better since they don't compete for bandwidth and there isnt a timing issue?

you won't have to worry about speed problems since your internet connection is relatively slow compared to what the nics will handle (unless you have a 100 mbit internet connection) - again this comes back to CPU speed and ram also

4th. I have a Celeron 700mhz, 512mb sdram, 2 10/100 pci nics, would this make a decent router with a switch placed afterwards? Would it handle torrents well?

That thing will murder as a router/firewall

To simplify the whole process I recommend m0n0wall http://m0n0.ch/wall/, I've implemented it at work and also use one at home. Use the CD/Floppy solution to test it all out

Good luck

Hello message board! Just a few questions here I can not seem to find out via Google, manuals, and reading other forum posts... We are attempting to utilize a t610 with the Linux based o.s. and are running into a few hurdles... I have seen on "Windows" based thin clients, after you make a change to something, you must "Commit" the changes... Is there a way to do this on a Linux box? It seems that the o.s. partition is Read Only?? Also, is there a way to navigate files and folders on this type of thin client? I see the terminal in "Admin" mode and I can kind-of nav files and folders through the text editor, but I am at a semi-loss doing things this way... I know this may be a stupid question, but is there a way to re-image this thin client to a "Windows" based o.s.? The main problem I am experiencing is an add-on/extension in firefox is not "sticking" in my firefox browser.... I have installed the extension many times, and after I restart the browser, it is gone and my settings are reverted to "original"... I am taking a guess here, but I am guessing every time this client "reboots" it is booting to an image?? One last question, is there any "manuals" for these Linux based clients? I see most or all of the helps seems to be geared towards Windows, and would just like a reference... Thanks for reading!Brandon

Answer:T610 Linux based thin client

If you're talking about the HP ThinPro OS- Before you can make changes to the file system, you need to run this command from the terminal - "fsunlock". When you're done, "fslock" locks the file system again. There isn't another file explorer tool included that I'm aware of in ThinPro. Command line and the notepad tool are the only real ways to navigate the file system. If you're looking for help with something, keep in mind it is basically a stripped-down version of Ubuntu, with some extra utilities and GUI provided by HP. The nuts and bolts are the same as an Ubuntu build so I've gotten quite a bit of insight from Ubuntu forums online for problems that I've had. As for your browser extensions issue, depending on how you're doing this, you can configure connections to allow them to configure their own settings, or to use HP ThinPro settings. If you haven't allowed Firefox to create and use its own settings in the file system, nothing you change inside the browser will stick. I haven't tried installing a browser extension but I'm pretty sure that's where your problem is.

Thanks for for your time,
I couldn't find any post close in nature to this problem.

I have a crashed Lacie network storage device, something in it's networking board is fried. It's comprised of 2 separate HDD's, both 500gig. I was afraid they were going to be stripped but it appears they hold their own complete files. I was able to look at the files through a file recovery program on Hiren's bootdisk. Said program was unable to keep file structure however. It seems theres no way to activate it to be read as a disk in windows.
Computer management reads both of the disks as having 5 small partitions and a large (476gig) partition on it. No real way to look into that partition though?
A couple other programs analyzed the disk and tell me it's 'linux native'.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to pull the files as well as folder structure out of it?

Researchers have found Java-based malware that is capable of infecting Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux systems. The malware exploits a known flaw in Java 7 u21 and earlier for which Oracle released a patch in June 2013. The malware communicates with an Internet relay chat channel that serves as a command-and-control server. The network of computers compromised by this malware is used to launch distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.

I know how to change my default e-mail in IE 6, so that when I click on a mail link, it opens up a program such as Outlook or Outlook Express.

However, I wasn't sure about this: is there any way to configure IE 6 so that mailto: links open up a web-based mail client, like Yahoo or Hotmail? I always suspected not, but had one person who swore she had it working with Yahoo.

Thanks!

Steve

Answer:Default e-mail in IE 6 and web-based mail clients

I've seen it do that before. If you go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs inside IE, then check the E-Mail box, and whatever is listed in the dropdown is what you can make the default email program.

To get Yahoo in there, you may need to download and install the Yahoo Toolbar.

Windows XP to Linux seems to be the best option from where i'm sat - as i don't like the look of Win8 and I'm past giving Microcash any more of my hard earned money. I have a "Mageia 4" disc also "Ubuntu13.10" and "Open SUSE 13.1" on the same disc. My old Dad hates change so much he had Win7 removed from his new Cube and reloaded with XP!!!So is there a version or a way of making Linux look as XPish as possible?????

Answer:I have XP on 3 home based PC's & require Linux setup advice

"BUT, how do i go about dual booting?"The way I do it is, I put XP on one hard drive & Zorin on another.1: Cable up a spare HD.2: Uncable the XP drive.3: Install Zorin.4: Cable up the XP HD.5: Boot up & enter the bios.6: Go to the boot tab & select the HD you want to be default.7: F10 ( Save ) & exit.8: If you want to choose a different drive ( operating system ) F8 during boot. If you get Safe mode etc, you have waited to long before toggling F8.

Currently I use rsync scripts to backup various parts of my server, offsite websites, my home PC etc... it's kinda dirty, and there's just no consistency as every script is written a different way. I was thinking of writing my own web based front end that basically generates the scripts and lets me do some granular backups, set retention and so on, but then I got thinking, there must be something out there already made, and free.

I want to be able to setup jobs, and make them run at a specific date/time, and frequency, and also set different retention periods so for example one job might be to backup the /home and /data folders, and I want this to run once a day, and I want to be able to go back 7 days, then also go back 4 months, and maybe 1 year (grandfather, father, son, type deal). But another job maybe I just want a mirror etc... need to be rather flexible. The destination can be a folder on that system, removable storage, or another offsite server. Same with the source,it may be another server, so I'd want it to use ssh key pair to authenticate.

Anything out there already made that can do all this? Currently I do it manually with scripts, just looking for something with a nice web front end.

Answer:Recommend free linux web based backup system

Webmin has a filesystem backup module. Not really great though.

Rsnapshot is what I am setting up now. Very slick. No web interface, but the config is easy to understand.

My dell laptop came with a windows home basic 64bit initially.. I installed windows 8 and then further ubuntu 12.04 through windows 8 to my system.

Due to some unrecognized problem, windows 8 became highly unresponsive as it made the screen unstable as soon as it booted. Due to which i had to delete windows 8 from my system. But i made a mistake of formatting the drive windows 8 was in without uninstalling ubuntu from my system. Since then it didnt boot any other system other than the original windows. If i try installing any OS to my system, just as the installation is about to start the laptop shuts down..I am incapable to load any other OS..I have tried various versions of linux based systems.

I have re-installed windows 7 on my system; making all new partitions. Now many errors that used to occur before in my system are resolved but this problem of the OS installation remains.

Any help on the matter is most welcome..Since I am a linux user..I'd like my system to be responsive to it asap..Any ideas on how windows 8 might have effected my system boot is also welcome.

I'm looking at setting up monitoring software on my Atom box that is currently powering my hvac system. I want it to be easy to setup the agents on various platforms (linux mostly, but Windows too) as well as support custom alarm points such as executing a SQL query or script and checking the value. Mostly the key is ease of setup though.

I have a bit of experience with Pandora as we use it at work. It has a few quircks and is not the easiest to setup an agent for, but it's not too bad.

I heard Nagios is good as well. I'm aiming towards that one just because I heard lot of good things about it. Just wondering what else is out there and what is everyone's recomendations?

Oh and I would be monitoring offsite servers as well, so push agent is prefered so I don't have to open up ports on the remote servers. I rather just open up a port on the monitoring box (which will be at my house) and IP restrict it. More secure that way.

Answer:Good free Linux based monitoring software?

Nagios is pretty much the defacto standard for linux host monitoring. Its good once you get it setup

Hi,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this - it could sit in 2 or 3 of the others.

Due to possible changes in my role (taking on a couple of remote sites) I need help sourcing web based remote access. I'd rather the provider was UK based, cost is irrelevant - but I need to be able to take over PC's fully via Internet Explorer.

I've searched on the web, and found a couple, but would prefer feedback from on here first, as to what others use.

Any help greatly appreciated.

I had a problem a few years ago with one of my applications and needed to call the vendor. At the time, they used WebEx to get to me and I in turn used our terminal services to get to the server. It is only one experience, but it lasted a few hours and no glitches... I won't put my name behind it, but it was a good enough experience for me to remember WebEx specifically...

Hello again. I continue to have problems requiring some assistance. I am running windows 7 Home, SP1, and I use windows live mail email client to service my email accounts with bellsouth.net (att.yahoo.com).
Over the past year I have been having spells when My ability to send or receive email would result in an error message 0x800CCC90 stating my password is incorrect. These spells of broken email willl generally correct themselves on their on; however this most receent episode has lasted about two weeks and it's geting a little annoying now. My attempts to consult ATT by chat for assistance always ends in their throwing up their hands in defeat and a closing statement that the problem is my email client and not ATT and ATt support does not include Windows live mail. My mose recent chat sesssion ended with the silent treatment from the chator leaving the chatee hanging.

I know the problem is a server problem because my attempt to change my email password resulted in a statement: "There are currently no available options for you to obtain a temporary password for your account. For help retrieving or resetting your password, please contact us."

I appreciate your patience with my rather verbose complaint. Any assistance will be greatly appeciated.

Hi,
I am using a Synology simple server (DS108j) which has a Western Digital 500GB HDD.
I have a problem with the server and I need to back up my HDD externally before I install new firmware to the server, as the new installation requires to format the HDD.

The HDD is linux based and I cannot access the files with a docking station which I have in hand.

Can you advise how I can access all the files, so I can back them up properly with all their names and folders?

Thank you,

Ishay

Answer:recover linux based hard disk data to windows

Windows can not see linux files so if you are trying to view them on a Windows computer, that will not work.
Create a linux partition on your Windows computer, install a distro, boot into it, attach the HDD and mount it, then copy the files from the HDD into the linux partition.

Of course if you already have another computer running linux, use it and not the windows one to copy the files to.

I am looking for a software similar to acronis, where I just boot with a CD, and have access to the network to store the image. I'd also like the capability of browsing the image within Linux by mounting it. Is there such software? I did a search on Google but it does not seem there are many Linux based imaging solutions.

Answer:open source/free linux based disk imaging?

Have you looked at Partimage or Clonezilla. I don't know if they have network support though.

I've used partimage with PING to backup images to CD's. Unfortunately it's only partition based and not a true disk bit copy. I don't know of any freeware that does disk bit copies.

Hi there bleeps :D
I got a sony vaio laptop, and it has windows 7 OEM on it. Tried to install Linux on it on another partition, and the installation was fine and finished. Then I got into the windows and used BCDedit to add a new value for the linux distro I installed. Now, when I boot the laptop, it gives me 2 options, win and linux... but if I run linux, it gives me an error and doesnt find the bootloader.
If someone can guide me through the process I'm ready to erase all my data from the HDD and repartition everything. My only aim is to be able to dual boot Windows 7 with Kali Linux.

Answer:Want to dual boot Win7 with Linux on a UEFI-based laptop.

I don't know Kali Linux at all, but I have installed Linux Mint 16 on a UEFI Windows 7 system.  Current versions of Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSuse at least have support for UEFI.  For Kali Linux, it appears you will have to make a custom ISO with UEFI support - https://forums.kali.org/showthread.php?271-How-to-EFI-install-Kali-Linux

To install Linux Mint, dual booting with Windows 7 in UEFI mode here is what I did...

- Starting point was Win 7 x64 installed in UEFI mode, GPT partitioning scheme on all attached disks, and 100Gb unpartitioned space on one of the disks.  If you need to re-size existing partitions to create space use Gparted.

- Boot Linux Mint DVD in UEFI mode (this involves going into the BIOS, and in the Boot Override menu choosing the name of the DVD drive with UEFI in the name, as per below).  NB This is important - if the installer is not booted in UEFI mode, it will install in Legacy mode and this will not work if the existing OS is installed in UEFI mode.

- Choose "I want to do something else" aka custom installation in the installer

- Created separate root, home and swap partitions (swap, if using, should be equal to ram).  The root and home partitions were formatted to Ext4 FS.  I allocated 20Gb to the root partition and the leftover free space to the home partition.  Mount point for root is /, and for home is /home.

- Find the existing EFI partition created by ... Read more

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?

I need to make a router to setup some qos rules in my network. The IP phones here are dying when people are downloading, browsing, etc.

I looked at clark connect but i didnt even mention qos.

Any other ones? Additionally if it has URL filtering and such it would be nice since might as well set it up, and also maybe an MRTG looking graph to monitor and such.

Answer:Good linux based distro for router/firewall but primary purpose would be for QOS

i think alot of us here use IPCop, www.ipcop.org, it has traffic shaping, and u can load an QoS add-on, but trafficshaping works fine for me, u just set your line speed, enable it, then add some rules, i just prioritize the ports my voip uses, i can have my ftp leeched, wife on limewire and phone works fine, no echo, no delays

Connected a windows share to a NAS Linux v5 Based Thecus N4100, N5500, N7700, and N8800.

Google Drive reported the directory was not writeable. A quick look and all folders had a black square in read only. Took a look at the security tab and the only full control was for the NAS accounts. All windows account permissions that Google drive relies on were blank and unchangeable. This is by design for Linux NAS permission in Windows. No I cant change everyone to full control..

As google drive has no explicit NAS Linux account the only option was to have the NAS run in public permission mode. Yes google drive now installs.

But it's not a good fix. Acronis True Image Home backup can not log into the NAS. It wants a Linux account to browse despite it being public. But the public NAS has no account! No I can not make a Linux user and get google drive to work.

Someone suggested "this sounds like the old "aligning the Windows and Linux account" problem. As it sounds like a 2 decade old issue I'll keep it short. Why not try the logins aligned. That is if I login on my Windows as Sally, why don't I have a matching Sally account on Linux?"

I can't align the logon as I use an email address for windows account sync. What a shame.

Introducing New Linux-based Norton Bootable Recovery Tool 2016.1.0

New Linux-based NBRT

It is truly a milestone event that we have released a newer version of Norton Bootable Recovery Tool (NBRT). The newer version is designed to run on Linux OS instead of WinPE OS and can be downloaded from the NBRT portal site. The change was necessary due to the expiration of re-distribution rights of WinPE OS.

The current WinPE-based NBRT version has been serving for nearly two decades.

Over time, NBRT has dealt with many tough-to-remove threats and we understand that NBRT can save the last bacon at unfortunate times. Therefore Norton team decided to invest in the development of a newer version that can run on Linux OS. Nearly all components had to be re-written for the new OS environment and now the newer version is ready to take over the critical missions.

Better and more are coming!

The new Linux-based NBRT version is shipped with several utility tools including a web browser and command-line tool. No more special tool like NBRTWizard is required to create a bootable media with the latest antivirus definition. Users can directly download the NBRT ISO image and load it to a bootable media of their choice: DVD or USB. Once started, the new version checks for the availability of newest antivirus definitions and automatically updates the product.

The new version also supports both wired and wireless network connection and compatible with SATA/SSD disks. IDE disks are no longer supp... Read more

Hi there. I've always used free web based mail and haven't had a problem. But my father likes using Microsoft Outlook Express (bleh!) which I can respect.

So basically I have to set up his email for POP3 mail which isn't my question. But I do have a question about POP3 mail vs webbased mail.

I've heard that POP3 mail is more prone to security hacks..is that true? and what are the advantages and disadvantages of POP3 mail. Thanks so much

Answer:Pop3 Mail Vs Web Based Mail

Many people prefer using POP E-mail because it allows you to read, reply, or compose messages off-line and at leisure; or because you have a copy of the E-mail that can be kept on your computer or archived to disk (especially for business uses); or because you can download E-mail while multitasking or doing other activities on-line.

Certainly, there are additional security problems associated with POP E-mail, since the contents eventually reside on your computer; however, these are easily handled by following best security practices about opening attachments and keeping your resident AV current. Since most E-mail providers now also scan your E-mail for malware, E-mail security is much improved.

Regards,
John

Hey,

I've been having this problem where I'm losing a very high percentage of my packets (40-92%), when I'm running in Window 7 64 bit. However, when I use the Asus Express Gate (which I understand is based on SplashTop which runs in Linux), I get 0% packet loss.

This problem only seems to happen on this connection. I have used the computer extensively on other connections with 0% loss.

I am not a computer expert, so I apologize if I dont know the right term to use. If it is not clear, post something, and I will clarify asap.

Determined packet loss using pingtest.net and using the cmd window to ping google.com.

Attempted fixes:

*updated LAN drivers

*restarted modem

*Disabled Firewall and Antivirus

*Had my ISP reset the connection from their end

*reset hardware (take battery out, unplug, then hold power button down for 45 sec)

*A service technician from my ISP came out and could find nothing wrong with the connection. The signal strength was good.

I havent reloaded the operating system yet. I'm told it is unlikely to solve the problem since it has been happening since i got the computer. I would like to avoid this if possible lol.

Thanks for any input you have. I'm willing to try anything if it might help.

Answer:Solved: High (60%+) packet loss in Windows 7, but not in Express Gate (Linux based)

Can anyone let me know if any software exists, that will allow me to get notification that email I send from AOL, has been read by the recipient please?

Answer:Receipt for email sent from AOL to web based email

Aol will notify receipt of mail by other Aol members. This is a programmable option, though i can't find it at the moment!I doubt if any software exists which will show that a particular email has been opened whatever the ISP or whoever receives it. (Except for dialler viruses and malware)In a negative sort of way the obvious comment arrives when the email is not deliverable because of "Fatal" errors in the address.

Hi All, Mac is using the PCIe-based flash storage in some of its laptops and will be using it in the new MacPro.  Does anyone know if the W540 will support this?
