WRT54G/ WRT54GS problems resolved with new beta firmware

Question: WRT54G/ WRT54GS problems resolved with new beta firmware

For those of you have the high throughput disconnects when tranfering from pc to pc with these modems, go to:

http://www.linksysinfo.org/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=2601

Go to page 19 and you'll see where the new beta firmware for the routers has basically fixed the problems for almost everyone. Post the results if it fixed it, that way linksys can get the final version out.

Preferred Solution: WRT54G/ WRT54GS problems resolved with new beta firmware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Been using the new firmware for a while with no problems but now I'm not able to access the router's interface through the web thing. I've reset the router and whatever I try I can't access it. I can telnet it but I don't know the user and pass. It still works and assigns IPs but I can't get to the web interface.

Answer:Problems with Linksys WRT54G DD-WRT firmware

Well, not sure what to tell you about the web interface. But for telnet the username should be root and the password should be set to whatever you set the administrator password to.

Don't buy these routers for their Wireless capabilities. They are really bad routers and CISCO refuse to fix.

These routers have a faulty drivers for their wireless network cards, CISCO knows this but they will not address the issue. Infact these routers might actually have a hardware problem as well which means that the firmware will not fix the problems. I guess they need a lawsuit just like dlink got to get their act together.

Symptoms.

You wireless connection will drop every hour so.

Spotty connections, it will hover any where from 1mb to 54mb.

Router will completly freeze up every 24-36 hours of uptime. You will need to reboot the router at that point.

If you try to transfer any file over 60mb you will cause your router to completly freeze up or it will reset you connection.

These problems seem to effect the following hardware Revisions: 1.1/2/2.2/3

Fixes

Return the router get another router that is not manufactured by the worst company on earth.

There is a Firmware which is beta (4.XX) that fixes some of the problems but there are still numerous problems. Call Linksys for it or google it, I found a link on sveasofts forums. After you get this firmare Turn your MTU down to 1474-1492 range and change you wirless watchdog from 100 to 50.

Any open firmwares that are based on on 3.XX official firmware will not fix these issues.

I'm looking to get the best out of my router and I read linksys WRT54G has a lot of third party support. I was considering these three routers and want to know if the other 2 are as popular (firmwares and such). I have the D-link di-624 which dies and disconnects me when I start using p2p programs, so I'm going to make a switch. Can these routers handle a lot of connections in emule without dying? Is speedbooster worth it? Are the other 2 comparable to the great reviews of WRT54G? Thanks. I appreciate it.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G, WRT54GS, WRT55AG and third party support?

THrough one wall? pffff no problem, my WRT54g before I replaced with my D-Link DGL 4300 went downstairs diagonally through a floor and several walls with pipes and wiring and I still got a good signal.

Don't play with the third party firmware but alot of people love using it and get kick ass routers with them.

Hi all.I recently recommended the purchase of a Linksys WRT54GS router to a friend. I have one and it works well.Unfortunately his router configuration screens appear to be in German! Although he is up and running through my screen-for-screen translation, he is about to attempt a firmware upgrade to fix the problem.I have never attempted a firmware upgrade so I have two issues I hope you can help with please:Does the router remember your network configuration settings after the upgrade or is it a case of restoring a saved config file? Or worse do you have to reconfigure from scratch?Secondly, I read that it's a good idea to download a copy of the current running firmware before upgrading, just in case anything goes wrong. Unfortunately, it appears that only the latest firmware versions are available on the official Linksys site so does anyone know of a site where previous firmware versions might be available please? Thanks,Tom.

Answer:Firmware upgrade - Linksys WRT54GS

1) Not normally; as I understand it, the firmware flash will in most cases overwrite the memory. I would expect that the settings are on the same ROM chip.2) Restoring a saved config file may or may not work, depending on whether it requires the same firmware version or whether the new version is substantially different. Unknown territory.3) A very good idea, I would say. Covers your back in case any of the above issues crop up, or that the new revision is not 100% solid. The trouble is that most router manufacturers do not offer anything beyond the latest version. I cover that by downloading a copy of the original for any new router at the time of installation, but that's academic here of course.I think you should just save the config file anyway, but write down your settings and option choices in case they are wiped and you need to re-enter them. I would expect the new firmware rev to be okay.

Hey guys, I've recently been having some trouble with bit torrent downloads, and someone suggested that the connections were basically overloading my "little home use" router. I'm using the default Linksys firmware, and I hear that other firmwares are able to shape traffic much better. Can you suggest one for me and provide some tips for installing it? I hear that DD-WRT is the best at the moment? Thanks

I've got a WRT54GS that will not allow me to upgrade the Linksys Firmware to the latest Tomato release. I continue to get this absolutely hilarious error:

Sorry for the crappy resize.

Anyway. Is there anything I can do to force the firmware upgrade? As it is now, the router is not functioning. It drops wireless connections randomly and I have a hard time getting pages to load because they just time out. I was hoping that Tomato would fix that tissue so I wouldn't have to purchase a new router.

Well..... I was just about ready to throw my new laptop out of my window today after trying EVERYTHING I found on-line about the slow download speeds with Vista. My XP works fine but put my Vista next to it and watch the grass grow for accessing sites or downloading.... I also have VoiP and when I was on the support line with HP today, I noticed that my Vista worked lightning fast when I was on the phone... After the tech checked my system and could find no issues and we ended the call, S L O W speed again... I made another phone call and WOW.. FAST speed while conencted on the phone. After checking with my VoiP provider they suggested I contact Linksys to inquire about a possible router problem. When I went on-line to Linksys, I found a firmware update for my 2-3 year old router... I decided to download the firmware and IT FIXED THE PROBLEM... YEAH!!!! I know this is a very popular wireless router and imagine many who purchased this while using XP and now upgraded to Vista....... I can get some sleep tonight!

Question: WRT54G Firmware

Hey guys.
After some thinking on the matter, I've come to the decision that I'll at least TRY to keep my wrt54g and get it working. However, I've heard a bunch of talk about using aftermarket firmware. I was wondering what one you guys would recommend. I've seen stuff about both Sveasoft firmwares, as well as several others. I'm in the dark as to what to go with.

Any advice?
-Ghent

Answer:WRT54G Firmware

Sveasoft - if you want a lot of features and a fruity GUI
OpenWRT - if you want even more feature but a command line interface (unix users tend to like this one)
HyperWRT - if you only want increased TX power over the stock firmware
DD-WRT - if you like the Sveasoft firmware but think the guy that runs the company is an ass (he is)

Also, if you have a version 4 unit, you're pretty much stuck with openwrt.

Question: WRT54G firmware

I am thinking of changing the firmware of my Linksys WRT54G router to the open source application of Tomato.

Based on post at lifehacker.com, the hack is supposed to give your router more features and allow you to tweak the router's settings.

Answer:WRT54G firmware

There are a number of 3rd party firmware packages for many Linksys models, one of the more popular ones is DD-WRT. I've heard good things about that one, I suspect Tomato is probably a similar thing, though I haven't looked into that particular package.

I'm quite content with the features of the stock firmware that the WRT54G v2 has but theres one thing in particular I was wondering if an open source firmware could provide. I'm wondering if there is a firmware out there that boosts the power to the antenna. my router is upstairs and downstairs the signal is spotty at best. I'm considering buying an external antenna but I was thinking that just boosting the power maybe enough. Does anyone have any knowledge on WRT54G firmwares? Any help would be much appreciated.

If I decide I don't like the HyperWRT or have problems with it...can I flash back to the regular, official Linksys firmware, and undo the changes? Basically, is it safe to try this firmware, because I can alway revert to the official?

Best Buy is having a sale this week on their WRT54G and WRT54GS routers ($40 and $60 after rebates, respectively). So, I'm going to try to pickup a WRT54G v2.0 since from what I've read seems to best one to get. I did want to get the GS (for the extra ram), but I don't want any problems with World of Warcraft or timeouts when transferring large files (I've read about both issues on the WRT54GS)

So... I'm wondering which firmware is the best one to use. I don't need anything espicially advanced, but I'd really like to have it so that I could learn more about routers and have a lot to experiment with.

It seems like Sveasoft for $20 per year is the best way to go but please tell me what you think.

I have a WRT54G v5 and was wondering if there is any firmware that will speed up things. Transferring files between computers seems to be a tad slow. Also, anything that I could do to help decrease my ping? Or should I just get a new router?

I primarily do gaming online and web browsing and transfer things from computer to computer.

Answer:WRT54G, new firmware or new router?

The V5 is a very crippled router..hardware wise. Yes you can get a version of DD-WRT on it...quite a few steps involved compared to flashing a better model like a version 1-4 with DD-WRT, and not much performance gain...because as decent as DD-WRT is..it can only do so much with so little horsepower.

I believe Tomato works best on supported Linksys routers. The user interface is much easier to use also. DD-WRT works on more models of routers but the UI is somewhat confusing for noobs.

I currently have the Linksys WRT54G wireless router with the latest firmware available from Linksys. However I've noticed that there are one or two companies that also make firmware for the Linksys router (ie. Sveasoft Satori v4.0).

My question is would my network be any more secure by going with a 3rd party firmware versus the firmware Linksys puts out?
Thanks,

-Michael

Answer:WRT54G vs. 3rd party firmware...

I would not trust 3rd party firmware, regardless of company / product involved, to be more secure than the original unless there is independent trustworthy verification of it.

In a nutshell, Linksys has better access to the way the hardware really works, so I'd be very hard pressed to assume someone else's is safer.

Hi

I just recently downloaded Sveasofts Satori third party firmware for the Linksys WRT54g. Ive only experimented with the output power settings. The power setting is now variable from 0-85mw, with the stock being 28mw. I actually keep it now at about 10mw, as this is plenty to cover my residence and then some.

The recent PC mag stated that this firmware adds around 30 new settings in various categories to tinker with. Im curious to see if anybody else has "hacked" there router using this firmware, and if so, what did they modify, and where you happy with the results?

The firmware can be found here

The other day I bought the WRT54G to use in my apartment, sharing the connection amongst four of us. I'm the only one who doesn't use my cell as my primary phone; instead, I use Vonage. I bought the WRT54G to be able to use QoS features, since my roomies aren't always good about keeping the cable line de-saturated with their downloads.

I know about the Sveasoft firmware, but after doing some reading I'm hearing some bad things about their business practices (GPL and whatnot). I don't mind paying $20 to get the good stuff, but I don't want to pay it if I can otherwise legally aquire the same thing.

I do not want to get into even somewhat gray areas here, since I'd rather get good quality advice. Please don't tell me to look on P2P sites or the like. (That's what PMs are for. ) But seriously, what are my options to enable QoS, and make use of some other cool options on my new router?

Oh yes, almost forgot: Some instructions on what I need to do would also be helpful. I've done firmware upgrades, of course, but if there's some esoteric method for doing things, please let me know that, too.

So a litle more then a year ago, I set up my first wireless network using the WRT54G. It was still only version 1.0. I have the router set up in the basement, I tried using my laptop on the back porch, and I had a very horrible connection. I then started to look around for a different solution. This was before the high gain antanaes for the router. And then I can't remember how, but I found this firmware program called Satari. It gives you tons of more feutures then the standard firmware put out by linksys. One of which allows you to boost your siginal strenght by raising your xmit power (basicly overclocking the router).

But anyway, just recently my router has been disconnecting from my cable internet modem. And I find myself hard restetting it at least once a day in order to gain internet access. I can still access my router and ping other computers on the network, but neither wired nor wireless can access the internet until I reset the router. Does anybody have any idea what is going on? I've alread tried cloning my mac address, disenabling WEP, and several other things. Or could this just be a dreaded failure from esentially overclocking my router, but if this was true, I don't know why the wire switch would be effected......

I bought a used Linksys WRT54G v8.2 router and I would like to replace the stock firmware with DD-WRT, because Linksys -- I should say Belkin now -- hasn't brought out any firmware updates for this model in a very long time.

The problem is that the idiots at DD-WRT's official site are being very unhelpful & not cooperative.

I just want to know what version I need to get from the FTP site that is in one of the articles, and they keep stating read all 4 which I've done multiple times and still have no idea.

They wonder why they are getting a bad rap, is because they are annoying new users who want to use their software.

I may just start saving up and get the RouterBoard wired/wireless router down the road.

I flashed my Linskys WRT54G with DD-WRT firmware (v.24) so that I could use the router as a wireless repeater for a signal whose origin is some distance away from the router.

It's working, but there's something strange about the signal. My download speed is something like 300 kbps, while my upload speed is 400 kbps. Why am I able to upload faster than I can download? Is there a DD-WRT setting that I should tweak?

Answer:WRT54G as Wireless Repeater Problem (DD-WRT Firmware)

Do you have the transmit and receive antenna on the same one, or on the left and right? You might try changing to either left or right. One might be getting better signal than the other.

Are you connecting wireless or wired? If wired, you might try using it as a client. If wireless, the repeater should work fine.

Not sure why it's not giving you full downloads... What kind of signal strength is it giving you?

Ok, you guys can make fun of me if you want, but I was in a hurry and thought that I might be able to get away with this.

I was trying to help my brother upgrade the firmware on his router and thought that it would be faster to just do it myself remotely, rather than trying to explain the process to him.

It all seemed to be working fine, until a little over halfway through the upgrade, I got a "firmware upgrade failure" message and now the router is completely unresponsive.

I'm guessing the problem came from the bin file being locally on my computer while I was upgrading the router remotely.

Anyway, is there any way to fix this? We can't even ping the router now.

I had him unplug it and reset it and its still not responding.

Maybe Walmart will take it back.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G firmware upgrade failure.

There's a very good website on the net complete with pictures that tells you how to revive a dead WRT54G. I unfortunately never bookmarked it, but it involved the following:

1. Unplugging the unit.
2. Taking it completely apart (it's easy - screwless design)
3. Locate pins 15-16 on the router's chipset (usually labeled Broadcom).
4. Short the pins. While shorting them, plug the power in.
5. You'll see lights flash.
6. You'll have a small window of opportunity to TFTP a working firmware to the router.

I could ellaborate some more, but I have to go to work. It really does work. I did it myself after a bad firmware upgrade.

But yeah, it's probably easier if you just got it replaced.

Was it the wrong firmware? Was it for your chipset version? Was the firmware for G, or GS, or other?

So when I went back to the administration window I could not access and then came very strange characters and administration was not accesible, however router was working for having internet connection and some other features.

I have also tried pushing RESET button, but still the same

How can recover back firmware to have access to the administration/remote console?

Thanks.

I have just gone through a major network insanity which began with me trying to flash firmware to my Linksys WRT54G router. Now, even with it hooked up to my main router, I cannot access 192.168.1.1. What I was attempting to install was DD-WRT through the web admin. Outside, it appears to be functioning like normal, no signs of any bricks. I can even access it through wireless, but haven't tried out internet connectivity.

Help needed!

I have an old Linksys WRT-54G that I thought might be getting a bit long in the tooth. There was a recent sale on the new D-Link DIR-657 which is a full featured current gen model, that supports wireless N, support QOS automatically for game and video packets, and supports USB print server and file sharing function. I decided to upgrade for the cheap price of $20 on at the recent onesaleaday listing.

I expected to get a bit of an improvement in connection speed - after all that old Linksys router is about a decade old. I've not really spent time on wireless yet to compare at all, but for wired there is no change to speak of. I was surprised, because I figured that old v2 WRT-54G 200mhz processor might have been holding me back. It apparently was not.

I ran eight simple speed tests with each router pretty immediately after swapping them out. I ran four cities twice on the speakeasy.net tests. (http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/) Here are the results.

Dallas
WRT54G - 13.54 and 16.58 down and 1.04 and 1.08 up
DIR-657 - 11.71 and 17.60 down and 1.07 and 1.08 up

Chicago
WRT54G - 8.51 and 8.72 down and 1.07 and 1.07 up
DIR-657 - 5.98 and 8.75 down and 1.07 and 1.07 up

Seattle
WRT54G - 6.46 and 5.05 down and 1.01 and 1.06 up
DIR-657 - 5.03 and 6.40 down and 1.06 and 1.06 up

New York
WRT54G - 15.30 and 16.77 down and 1.07 and 1.06 up
DIR-657 - 20.20 and 15.73 down and 1.07 and 1.05 up

I have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router and I'm running into some problems with a mobile setup. The internet/network access seems to be ok and printing to a printer off one of the ports on this router (hardwired) is fine no matter where I'm at). But, here is the problem; I'm having trouble logging into Novell. I can ping the novell servers and get a response (via IP) but it never seems to be able to log into Nvoell if I'm on the wireless on the wrt54gs or even plugged in via cat5.

But, as soon as I remove the wrt54gs and plug directly into the wall; I can login fine. TO my knowledge I don't see any protocol filtering that is setup on this router. Any ideas?

Answer:WRT54GS and Novell Problems

I assume you are logging into a VPN Client first to access your companies firewall. I would find it hard to believe a Novell Server wouldn't be behind a Firewall

If this is the case, it may actually be an issue with your VPN client and the router.

Hello,

I've been staring at this router for almost two hours now and I think I'm gonna go nuts!! For some reason I can't seem to get it to transmit at 108Mbps. I do have afterburner on and I've got the channel set to 6. The data rate works at 54Mbps though it's set to auto in the router. Now I am using the wmp54gs adapter card with the wrt54gs router and it's the only wireless computer on my network. My other computer is connected to the router through cables.
I'm using the linksys software to establish the connection, but I'm not sure that that's the problem. Also I've updated the drivers of both the router and the adapter.
Is there something I'm missing or not have setup right?
If anyone can help me it'd be greatly appreciated!

thanks

Ok guys, here is my setup:

I have the linksys wireless G router with speedbooster connected directly to my cable modem. I have my laptop connected (wired) to one of the ports on the router and everything works fine. When I say everything, I mean it connects and pulls an IP from the router, I can ping the router, and I can surf the net just fine. My desktop has a wireless adapter card in it (linksys also), and the wifi monitor that came with the card finds my wi-fi just fine but says on the tool that it cannot find the internet. It connects and associates itself with the router (or so it says) but cannot pull an IP or connect to the internet. I am pretty sure that I have DHCP and everything set up fine on the router (as evidenced by the fact that the laptop can connect and gets assigned an IP address just fine. I also tend not to think that anything is wrong with the router, since it is sending all the config information correctly to the desktop. Has anyone else had this problem and had a solution?

Thanks

Answer:Linksys WRT54GS Setup Problems

Does your SSID match on the router and the wireless machine? Do you have any of the wireless security enabled? You may want to try disabling it temporarily.

If you run ipconfig do you get any IP address / default gateway?

Hi there, I recently had Telewest (Blue Yonder) cable internet installed. It works fine and is the connection I am using at this moment. I have now bought a Linksys WRT54GS to share my connection. However, after following the Linksys set up wizard, I am told the router can not detect the internet connection. It is all connected up correctly (the laptop is wired to the router for the moment). Can anyone offer my some advice? Do I need to go into the setup and change some settings manually?I have 2 centrino xp based laptops. Thanks.

I'm at a complete loss as to explain what's going on here. Perhaps the router is starting to expire?

Anyone got any ideas?

I love the look and the way it works... but, in three installations, I get no tabs. Oh, the sites open in tabs, but I cannot access them or see them. I know they are there because FF warns me when I try to close it, but that is the only way (besides my cursor showing that work is going on in the background).

I have Tabbrowser preferences, and am using NNT to make everything compatible. i have went through the tab settings and everything should be kosher.

So... anyone got any light to shed on this?

Answer:*RESOLVED* No tabs in FF3 beta

What extensions do you have? Your ussual set? Do you have New Tab in Tab Bar extension? If so get rid of it. Taht one causes havoc with FF3. I use several extensions and still get tabs.

I am uploading shots of my add ons so you can see what i have and still get tabs. I am thinking it is a extension you are running that is causing this.

Hi,

I could sure use some advice. The GUI of the Spybot S & D, in it's LH pane, is a real pain for me. I have the blue background and the white font. I cannot read the font, can barely see it for that matter.

Is there a solution?

I have the skins in my Programs file but cannot find the 'change skins' setting on the GUI. It maybe that those skins, in any case, refer to the addy area of the gooey (there, I wrote it phonetically). Do they?

I see the code for the skins. If the font color referred to includes the LH pane and if I knew the code for Black I could change it,

Ideas/suggestions/guidance much appreciated.

PS. I have checked the Update folder for an unzipped file. Nada.
This is the latest version 1.3 Beta 6.

Answer:(Resolved) WinMe. The Beta Spybot GUI a problem.

Resolved. To rid yourself of the default GUI with it's invisble left pane texts USE ADVANCED MODE and choose the Peace Skin.

Been getting interrupted about every 30 seconds to 2 minutes, my internet doesn't disconnect but i get a huge 5 to 20 second lag spike. I thought it was my service provider at first, connected straight to the modem and everything was fine. So i am assuming the problem is with the router. Installed the latest firmware but the problem still remains. Also my dad has Vonage running through it, but it had been working fine until recently. Any ideas or just a bad router?

I currently use a WRT54G v5 router to connect to the internet. It has the DD-WRT v24 firmware on it.

Every now and again, the desktop that is connected (through ethernet, not wireless) loses it's connection and I have to restart my computer. This is extremely aggravating because it disturbs my work.
I have tried connecting straight through to my computer with the modem and the problem goes away. So i have narrowed the problem down to my router.

Using XP's network repair option does not work. The repair stops at "Acquiring network address..."
It seems as if the computer loses its IP address. The "ipconfig" commands in CMD do not work either.

please help.

Question: WRT54G Problems

So I went out and bought a wireless router a couple of days ago and from the beginning I've been plagued with random disconnects. The router is a WRT54G Linksys. I've done some searching on the internet and my wireless problems seem to mimick everyone elses very closely.

The wireless randomly disconnects no matter what I try (currently working my way down in MTU (1200) atm. Tried changing to different channels with no luck also.

I should also say, I've got two different computers hooked up to the router. The first is through normal cat5 straight to the router, the other is wireless. They're BOTH having this same problem.

Does anyone know how to fix this or am I pretty much screwed?

You updated firmware before setting up router at all ? i

cable plugged into the right port... right no uplink button depressed etc.. plugged in

reset the router first off. follow its reset instructions

Step1:
plug cable modem directly into 1 computer. try to open a page. make sure the cable modem is sending DHCP and not giving one of those SETUP webpage interfaces. (much cursing when swapping internet providers now saying their modem has a inital setup/recovery interface....... my firewall is openbsd, local terminal only....and hard to get to.. but that was a problem)

step2: (that computer sees the internet, gets ip, can use web
connect a computer to router, (dont bother plugging it into internet yet)

step3:
First box should read: Automatic DHCP, if your dsl then its PPPOE

Question: WRT54G Problems

I have a linksys WRT54G that I use as a Router/WAP. A few days ago I noticed that the router was no longer getting a DHCP lease (I live in a dorm, and yes I checked we are allowed to use Wireless routers as long as we use WEP or MAC Filtering). So I have been using a Static IP setup. Does anyone know why it would do this? I was getting a DHCP lease just fine until a few days ago. Also the wireless stoped working, but I left the router shut off all last night and now it seems to work again.

I have a win7 pc that has been using a linksys wrt54g router to an ISP cable modem. Has worked for about a year with no problems. Suddenly, my wifi has died. I cant connect through the linksys and I cant see wifi using my iphone.

I tried to connect to the router on ports 1-4 using the ip address 192.168.1.1 but all I get is "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

So, do we think think the router has died? I tried to power it off and on and did the reset for 30 sec but still no help.

I also tried to connect straight to the router using my XP laptop but nothing...

Any ideas?

Answer:linksys wrt54g problems

I have the exact same router. I'm running 3 systems with Seven, one with XP, one with Vista, 3 iPod touch devices a Nintendo Wii and 2 networked printers. Zero problems. Most are on the WiFi, only my file server is direct-connect.

Sounds a little like the router has just crashed. Doesn't happen very often but it does happen. Try a hard-reset using the recessed reset button on the back. If, after that, you can't even connect to it with a cable directly then yeah ... yer probably looking at a dead unit.

I'll try to keep this short. I bought the LinkSys WRT54G Router to network my laptop and the main pc. I set everything up perfectly. The card is working fine, and the router is connected and running, but:
The computer doesn't recognize the router.
I've run the setup software multiple times, but each time I get an error message of

Unable to connect to the Router!
Check that the Router has been connected to the PC,
or reset the Router to factory default settings
by pressing the Router's Reset button for 10 seconds.

I've done all of those, but still no results.
What should I do?

Hi,

I've been using linksys router wrt54g for a while.. until recently it looks like att bought bellsouth or something and changed the internet in some fashion. Now to log on to the internet I have to type in [email protected] and password (ppoe). But the worst part is the router stopped working.

If I connect directly from my computer to the jack it works (using the login mentioned above) but if I use the router to do PPOE or even DHCP (or any of the other ways) it doesn't work.

I've gone through the whole router configuration and tried changing things that I thought might work but nothing has. Also tried flush dns and ip renew and release.

My next step is to buy a new router but I thought I would make one last chance to relove this problem here.

THanks

My wireless network is a Linksys WRT54g and 2 computers running WMP54g and 1 with a dell wireless. My computer has a Linksys NIC, and I'm the closest to the router having to only go through 1 wall and about 10 feet of distance. I have no problems on my part. The computer with the Dell is 2 rooms away (approx. 30ft. away) and goes through many more walls and the other Linksys NIC is 3 rooms away (approx. 40 - 50ft. away). They can both download at the rated speed of the ISP and browse pages and what not, but when it comes to gaming, they get terrible packet loss and high pings, 3x the ping of mine sometimes. They even get dropped sometimes. This problem used to not occur when the router was in my room, but I have since moved it to another room adjacent to mine. Firmware and drivers are all up to date, transmitting power is at 100% and I changed the channel to 11 in case the default was interfering with other wireless products in the house (even though this was never a problem before). These solutions did not fix the problem. Could this all be because I simply moved it 1 room over and now it's too far away for them?

Answer:Linksys WRT54g problems

it could easily be becaused you moved it.

have you looked at any of the other firmware, i believe some of them give you increases signal. i think the other firmwares are hyperwrt and alchemy

I've been trying to configure a WRT54G for my parents shoe store, but I can't seem to get it to dish out an IP for their cash-wrap workstation. I've tried releasing/renewing through ipconfig - when I release it it says that is has already been released, when I renew it it says the specified file (network connection?) is missing. I can connect to the DSL through PPPoE perfectly fine without the router, so that rules out a bad NIC. The router works perfectly fine for every other computer in the store. Any ideas of what is going on?

Answer:Problems with WRT54G and DHCP?

A missing file sounds like a PC issue, especially since the other computers all work.

Could you post the exact error message that you get when you ipconfig/renew please?

Also, try to ping the 169.254.x.x IP address, and the loopback address (127.0.0.1) let us know if either one times out when you post the error message.

I recently flashed my wrt54g to the freeman 1.04 firmware (basically the sveasoft talisman firmware) and everything with the flash went fine. Prior to the flash, my whole system was working flawlessly, wired and wireless components were talking to eachother and all had net access. My problem is that the router no longer will retrieve an IP from the ISP - i.e no internet. The internal network seems to be setup correctly, all IP's assigned via DHCP, MAC filtering and WPA in place for security. I tried setting the router as a static IP to the net but that did absolutely nothing, it still would not connect to the ISP. Just for shits and giggles I reflashed the Alchemy firmware and later the offical linksys firmware just to make sure that it wasnt the firmware I was using and there seems to be no difference.

DHCP is set up correctly, even static IP didn't work
Unit is set for gateway mode (but tried router and it did not work)
WPA/MAC Filtering was turned off to ensure that was not the problem

I am pretty stumped. Truth be told, all I wanted was the SSH server and the power increase the firmware allows so that I can sit anyway in my yard and be on the net!

Answer:Problems after WRT54G Flash

have you tried to reset the router to defaults? If you are using comcast, you might need to reset the modem after a FW flash. Have you tried connecting directly to the internet, not using the router?

Aside: please be aware that if you boost the power of the antenna too much, you can permanently damage your router.

I have had this setup for a few months without any issues:ADSL - Airstation G54 --- (wireless) --- WRT54G - ( wired) - Main PC, Xbox360, WiiPlus a laptop using the Airstation wirelessly as well.Recently through, I'm finding that every so often the wireless stops working for internet and local area networking. when i try to repair the connection on the PC, it says "unable to refresh IP address". I find that turning both routers off for 10mins can often do the trick. Whilst the wireless isn't working, I've tried a wired connection to the Airstation and that works fine.Does anyone know what's going wrong here as resetting my routers every so often is getting really annoying! Thanks,Chris

I couldn't open it on my computer either when I went to his place, so it was definitely a hardware issue on the router. Third one has a strange problem.

It authenticates fine. 2 computers connected to the router. Connects to the cable modem fine. However, while connected to a computer, once in a while. Approx every 5-10 minutes, it would disconnect and reconnect from the internet. Bad for gaming and downloading files, etc. Bad for everything. He isn't on PPPoE. He has a DHCP type config. Also, his upload/download speeds are capped way lower than they really are. His connection is a bit over 1 Mbps at peak(so far we've seen), but when connected to the router, he doesn't download or upload much faster than as if he were on a 128kbps modem. Any ideas?

As to my problem, I got my router a nice year or so ago. It has worked fine. Minus the EasySecurity BS which I hate more than anything Nurgle can create. Except the wireless is really screwed up. I can sit with my laptop computer exactly a foot away from the router antennae and every once in a while at irregular intervals, the connection will be lost and it will reauthenticate again, etc. The adapter I am using is the Pentium M one. Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG. Quite sure it comes with all Pentium-M compute... Read more

Answer:2 problems with the WRT54G router.

What kind of cable modem are you using?

Do the lights go out on the cable modem when you lose your connection?

Try connecting your machine directly to your router with a crossover and see if you are still seeing intermitent drops. Keep in mind you will be open to the internet completely. I would recommend a good firewall(not the windows one) and stay connected only as long as you need to be, the 5 minutes that you usually get kicked off.

Have you tried resetting everything on the linksys to make sure you have clean settings?

Have you tried using a different channel for the wireless?

Do you have any other devices that are using the 2.4Ghz range?

Are you using an encyrption key?(Probabaly won't make a difference)

SO I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router ( version 5 I believe) that I am using for wireless acces to my LAN. I had it set up to filter MAC's so that only my 3 PC's that use wireless could get on. Or so I thought. I noticed a rogue PC on my network the other day. Odd , because I only have 3 MAC's allowed to access the WAP. I reset the router to factory default, reconfigured my wireless so that only the 3 known safe MAC's could access and yet still this other PC connects. I finally went in and changed some settings DISALLOWING the MAC of the rogue PC from connecting. and it appears to have worked.

I thought that allowing only 3 known MAC's would be enough though. Networking isnt my strong point so any suggestions?

Also, FWIW ( flamesuit on) I am not using any type of WEP or WPA, because I "thought" by limiting my wireless access thru MAC's I would be safe.

I did check, the rogue PC had its own MAC ( not one of mine spoofed) and as far as I know theres nothing set up as ad-hoc, etc.

Thanks for your input in advance.

Hello fellow Hard Forumites.

I don't normally post to the hard forums, because I don't normally have anything to say. However, I am now stumped with a problem that should be so simple I shouldn't need to post it here.

One of my buds had an ancient D-Link router that didn't want to recieve DHCP updates from his provider (Charter). No problem, I said -- just go grab a new linksys WRT54G turn on remote administration, and I'll set it up.

Well, long story short -- it works fine for about 5 minutes. At the end of the 5 minutes, only web traffic works. He can't play games online (Eve, Battlefield, Counterstrike, whatever), can't use IM, can't do anything but surf the web. And even that seems to work only every other request.

I had my bud take back the router twice, and all of them exhibit the same problem. I've disabled all the firewall settings, changed anything else I can think of, and no matter what it works fine for less than five minutes, and then bam, nothing again.

Please Hard Forum -- you're my only hope!

Thanks!

I tried looking into old posts but couldn't find anyone who had this same problem.

I have a WRT54GL ver 1.1 running as our main router and wireless network. I have an older WRT54G ver 6 connected only to provide a few more ethernet ports to use. Recently after a power outage (not sure if this had anything to do with it) it seems that the older router with disabled wireless reset in some sort of way. It is now showing the wireless is enabled (noticed it pop up on the wireless network choices on my phone) and now the ethernet ports do not work. I tried to connecting the old router to my modem to access the settings page but it will not provide a connection (even though the signal is there). The main WRT54GL is still running fine, just having a hard time getting this back to how I had it. Had this setup for about 2 years with no problems until now. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Answer:WRT54G bridge problems

You will need to connect a wire from a machine to one of the WAN ports on the router. Then log into the router and set it up to disable the wifi and turn off DHCP.

First senario,
I setup the Linksys WRT54G and installed the Wireless-G PCI Adapter on a WinXP Pro with SP1. I used a WEP key and connected, everything went smooth. Internet and everything was working.

Second Senario,
Recently formatted, I now have WinXP Pro SP2. I have the same router settings and I go to install the Wireless-G PCI Adapter drivers/wifi util. Everything installs fine, wifi nic is recognized etc. I disable windows from controlling the wifi connections so I can use linksys's util (as I did in senario 1). This time it connects to the access point but says. "Connected to access point but no internet connection". So I can see the router, I have a DHCP address X.X.X.101 . But it wont connect to the interenet. So I tried upgrading the firmware on the router (to 2.04.4), didnt help. Same error. Looked for updated wifi nic driver (there are none, stock ones are the latest). I tried diabling WinXP's built in firewall, still doesnt get internet. I don't understand what is wrong. I can see the router but the router doesnt have an internet connection? The icing on the cake is there is a computer "wired" into the router via cat5 and it can access the net just fine. So the router see's the cable modem. I have search google and seen other people with the same issue but no resolutions were posted. I think it has to do something with XP SP2 but I dunno.

Have any idea?

I bought two of these and flashed them to the latest DD-WRT mega bios. I have both of them set up as bridges. One is hooked up to my Xbox 360 and connects and stays connected to my wireless signal flawlessly ("local and internet"). The other is hooked up to my main desktop and it will connect to the wireless signal, but will soon drop the internet connection while remaining connected to the local network. I have swapped the routers back and fourth (resetting in between and not) and the 360 always connects perfectly and the desktop always drops the internet connection. Any suggestions?

Ok, using that router w/Linksys PCI wireless card in desktop in another room. Never can hold a wireless connection. Logs in then drops. I've even set the f&#^ing router on top of the goddamned PC & it cannot hold a wireless connection. Not sure what the problem is here. Have the latest firmware/driver/XP updates. My desktop is physically jacked & my GFs desktop is wireless. I'm running 64-bit encryption w/all the baseline settings. Like I said, it logs in just fine. Then when I walk back to it or try to get files off it thru the network. Nothing .... please need something or I'm tossing the P.O.S. out the f&$^ing window. Wireless eats a dick anyways ...

Ok, I'll begin by saying that I am a networking major and I can't seem to solve this problem. I'll keep this as short as possible.

I have an Arris cable modem that connects to my Linksys WRT54Gv6, which is running a micro flavor of DD-WRT SP2. The Linksys router handles the wired/patched connections throughout the apartment and also transmits the wifi. I came back from this weekend and my roommate told me that our internet was messed up. I had a look and changed some things around to get it working again but the Linksys seems to be having trouble getting an IP address from the cable modem. If I reset both and wait a few minutes it might finally get a WAN IP then I can do whatever online until it suddenly stops working. I went to bed last night with it working just fine and now I can't even get my Linksys to retrieve an IP from the cable modem. The Linksys will give me and the rest of the computers IP's via wired or wireless no problem it just isn't communicating with the modem correctly.

I need suggestions.

Iím new to routing but have a reasonable idea on networking. I have a WRT54G (IP 192.168.1.1) DSL Modem (192.168.0.1).
The WRT54G is connected to my PC via NIC (IP 192.168.1.42 Subnet 255.255.255.0 Gateway 192.168.1.1 (WRT) DNS set to ISP info)
I get connection, then I donít. I want to use static IPís as I connect to an Xbox as a media centre and I set the shortcuts through the NICís static IP.
I have the moden running DHCP but not the router, if i dont the i cant get a connection.

My DSL supplier is Bulldog.

If I disable then enable the NIC then the web works again, the xbox can connect to the net when this problem occurs which leads me to believe it's a IP conflict/problem with the NIC.

I have read that I need to change the IP of the NIC to an internal IP, do i then need to put the IP of the router on the same network level?

I have zonealarm configured how I need, XP Firewall is off, I have Norton systemworks running also.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Mark

Got the problem sorted, the DHCP client on the modem was set wrong, it needed to be the same as the IP of the modem. I have had connection for 12hours+ now.

I'll try and be as frank as possible.

Owned one WRT54G it kept dying, internet would not work at after a few days. Example: Setup Router browse the internet share files blah blah. I get home today around 6 internet still works, come back at ten and its completely dead, but....the light still blinks.

I've powered off and on the router and modem when the computer was off. Now here's the weird thing i can still access the router firmware and share files between two computers that are connected to the router so i'm sure its not a heat issue. There is just no way to browse the internet that portion dies, yet still blinks.

I have the SVEASOFT firmware installed and if i check the status all the IP stats are 0.0.0.0. So now what do I do?

I've heard of drop outs before but not complete dropouts on computers that are directly connected to the computer just those on wireless connections.

Nothing seems to help fix it and i'm not sure if its a network setup issue or something. There has to be a way to solve this problem.

Thanks

Hey guys I was having extreme problems with firewalls and antivirus programs conflicting and sending my browsing experience to the lowest its ever been. I decided to dig out my router and use that. I think the firewall program did some blocking and it has stayed in the registry or maybe ive set up my router wrong. I went to the linksys router setup and opened the ports i want to stay open for gaming and stuff but they don't seem to wanna stay open. I will open the port and do a port check to see if anything is coming through that port and it looks good for about 10sec after I open it. If i refresh or try it later it showing as blocked. I have no idea what i am doing wrong. As far as i know i have it all set up right. I have reset the router a dozen times now and still same problem. Linksys has opened up the port buy something is blocking it elsewhere i think.
I did cmd/ipconfig and am using the right IP address. on the linksys setup IP page everything is checked under applications and gaming that is to be checked. Could it have something to do with passwords maybe? When i log in put in password and enter the info just now and hit save changes it opened up for a quick second then shut down.

Before router I was using COMODO pro and AVG pro recent versions
those 2 programs seem to work for a week or so but then they shut me right out from internet explorer/firefox. I could only browse in safe mode. I got rid of both those programs after just buying them

For the past year or so I have been experiencing problems with the Linksys WRT54G Router. It has been replaced 3 times so far and every WRT54G Router we get it does the same exact thing.

Currently we have WRT54G v8 with firmware v8.00.6 build 005, Jun. 16, 2008.

The Router after a few days ends up losing the subnet mask. The subnet mask changes to 0.0.0.0 and the only way I can fix it is to unplug the router and plug it back in. One time I logged onto the Router and changed 0.0.0.0 to my subnet mask and it ended up freezing the internet. The only way I could fix that was to unplug the Router and plug it back in. When it does change to 0.0.0.0, the internet goes slow, but still works.

The only thing I really use the Router for is a firewall. To eliminate any issues I thought it could be, I disabled DHCP on the Router and switched it over to a Windows 2003 Server. I am still having the same problems and I am out of ideas. Anyone have any other ideas?

Would something like this "http://openwrt.org/" fix my problem?

or this one? http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv3/index.php

Reset the wrt54g, holding the reset button. Why...is another long story was basically trying to get a PSP to connect wirelessly....tried to set it up entered wep etc etc but PSP would not connect to the router.

Finally P#$$#d off did the reset.

Now I cant connect to the net Using the Ethernet cable !!!! So can't Enable WEP. And most irritating is of course having to dial up using PPPoE(I think thats what it's called). Earlier it would connect as soon as the modem booted???? Thank god I had saved the dialer along with user name and password.

I can ONLY connect to the net on my lappy wirelessly after using the dialer!!!!! Is'nt this strange as I would have thought people normally had Problems connecting wirelessly and not when wired up!!!

What should be done to fix this stink :cry TIA

Hi
I?m having major problems with my router. We have a linksys WRT54GS, with a desktop connected to it via cable and my laptop running on wireless. Things were ok until a few weeks ago, when my connection started dropping more often (but it would immediately connect by itself a few seconds later). But now, I can?t even connect to the internet. Here?s the detail:
At first, I couldn?t even connect to the router, although my laptop would pick up the signal. The router is set to have a network key (WPA or WPA II), so I played around with the connection properties and changed the network authentication to OPEN from SHARED and left data encryption to WEP. Now this time I can connect to the router, access the router?s setting and access the other computer, but can?t browse the net. Just for ease, I?ve disabled the router?s security mode now.
I?m running Windows XP Security Update 2, and I have a Intel Wireless Network card 802.11 b/g.
Did I mention HOW ANNOYING this is? I also had another linksys, the WRT54G, and that thing died on me too a while ago.
And yes, I have the latest firmware.
Thanks guys.

Sounds to me like an internet IP problem. Try unplugging the Modem from power for about 1 min then plug it back in. If that doesn't work try unplugging both the Router and the Modem for 1 min then plug in the Modem THEN the router. See if that refreshes the IP Address.

A while ago I updated my Firmware http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firmware on the router to whatever was most current on the Linksys linksys site, and everything worked fine while connected through the router to my PC. I began to have some lag issues in video games, so I reset my modem http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modem and when I went to plug everything back in I could not connect to the internet, so I had to connect directly to my computer from the modem, which is how I am able to get on the internet now.

Well, now that I have a laptop laptop , I want to be able to get online with it all over the house or use it to multi-task. I just tried to update the firmware and reconnected the ethernet cable http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethernet_physical_layer from the router to my PC and the ethernet cable from the modem to the back of the router and even after the firmware update I still cannot connect to the internet, or get wireless on my laptop.

Anyone had this problem and/or know how to fix it?

Help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Answer:Problems with Linksys WRT54G v2.2 Router

What's the exact make/model of the modem?

Try this procedure to get the router connected?
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

My network is slow whenever I have even a small number of connections being made. For example, even 50 connections from uTorrent slows my network enough to make web browsing unbearable. It is not a problem of bandwidth. My data is only downloading close to 50kb/s. This is with a Netgear wireless router.

I was considering buying a Linksys WRT54-G router with DD-WRT installed. I know this has quality-of-service rules and is a little beefier overall...however, will it solve my problems? Can I always reserve a few connections for each machine on port 80 for web browsing?

Answer:Will a WRT54G and QoS rules fix my torrent and slowness problems?

If you get an older version it might, I heard the new version sucks (Memory can't handle QoS well).

I just got done doing some research and it seems to be the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 was a better buy, unless you want to add antennas but then you would should be looking at the Linksys 54GS, I believe it is the new version more similar to the old 54G.

But I hear the Dlink 655 is one the best for QoS right now with updated firmware, but it does not run DD-WRT. It is Pre-N too.

And they will be releasing a new version of the 655 ( 855? ) soon. Now your up to date as of my research yesterday yesterday...

I'm just going to go with 2 WHR-HP-G54's (one to use as a bridge) they should be good enough for my purpose and customizable. A bit harder to flash, though, hopefully I will get mine tomarrow since I'm only miles away from newegg anyways (They had a good deal on the router).

A friend of mine has a Windows 2000 laptop from work with a Dell WAN 1350 wireless card. His wife and daughter use a HP PC to access the internet. I set up the WRT54G router like it says. I plugged the cable modem (a WebStar by Scientific-Atlanta i believe) into the router and plugged the LAN cable from the router to the HP PC. Doesn't work. I setup via the 192.168.1.1 and nothing worked. The PC was connecting to the router but the router wasn't connecting to the internet. The wireless doesn't work at all. The Dell WAN card isn't working at all. It isn't picking up any signal from any wireless connection. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G + Dell WAN 1350 Card + Wired HP PC... Problems!!!

With the information given, my only idea is that you didn't properly set up the router.

Did you connect the modem to the router's WAN port?

Does the cable company expect a specific MAC address to be connected to the modem? If so, did you successfully clone the HP PC's MAC address?

Have you checked all the router's WAN settings?

After configuring the router did you then power off everything, and then power up the modem, router and HP PC in that order?

And for the second problem, the wireless network, we're gonna need some info there too, before we can give you any specific advice. What's the SSID? DHCP Server enabled? etc. Don't turn on encryption until you've got the wireless network working.

Hey, recently Ive had trouble burning DVDs using Samsung TS-H552U, so after reading around I went to update my firmware using their automatic flash download. I downloaded the latest version, which lifted me from US03 to US07. It installs and asks me to restart. I restart, and when it boots back up, my DVD drive is no longer recognized. I have no idea what to do. For firmware to update using their program, it needs to find the drive, and since it isnt showing up, I cant do that. Any ideas?

Hello,
Once again I have networking problems... they seem to never end. This time I believe it has to do with my firmware update. My networking was working fine before I updated it. But now that it is updated it does not seem to work; however, I look at my connectivity status and it says that I have a 80-90% connection on the second computer. My internet still runs perfectly fine through my router into my main computer, but the second computer is without lan connection. I've updated the drivers and reset the ip address. I have win2k on second computer and winXP on main. Linksys(BEFW11S4) Router and a Linksys(WMP11) Wireless Network Card.

Question: Firmware problems.

I have a DVD Burner that's not working with a full windows installation.I know it works because I was able to use it to install Windows XP and all my drivers. I can use it outside of XP (IE I can boot from it) and I can use it right after a fresh XP install (IE I can use it to install all the drivers.)I'm guessing it's an issue with the firmware, but I'm not absolutely sure. Perhaps one of you guys could help me figure out the problem.

Answer:Firmware problems.

Does it show in Windows Explorer?Does it show in Devices Manager without any errors?
