Security essentials for a Win 2k3 server?

Question: Security essentials for a Win 2k3 server?

Hello, I'm going to finally be in-charge of a win 2k3 server that was recently absolutely destroyed by a hacking attempt and trojan download. I'm getting a fresh install and I'm curious on recommendations on basic security I should impliment.

I'm looking at a good software firewall, a good anti-virus program, but I'm curious on what else one should be looking for. I'm very new to this, and I'm learning a lot each and every day, but I hope that I can get a little guidance on this from fellow forumers, thanks

Preferred Solution: Security essentials for a Win 2k3 server?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

hi

What do you think, is it a good idea, to use Microsoft Security Essentials on production server and clients at the company?

Answer:Use Microsoft Security Essentials on productive server and clients

Because it never causes BSOD's.

I have both Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Security Essentials (incl. Firewall, Auto Updates and VIRUS PROTECTION) running on my old pc. Since they both have a virus protection, do I need both? It seems that this pc is always downloading updates and slows the pc terribly.Wellgo

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials vs Windows Security Essentials

"Windows Security Essentials"Are you sure that is the exact name? Maybe I've missed something but I've never heard of it.It is not good to have two Anti-Virus programs running in real time, for the reason you gave. They tend to "check each other" and cause slow downs.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Hello,DDS logs attached and pasted below. Did I get it all? Thanks in advance :-)My dad called me at work to tell me that his XP Security Center was going off, warning him that his AV product wasn't running and/or up to date. The thing was, MS Security Essentials was as happy as it could be: definitions were up to date, realtime protection was on. A reboot didn't help either. That was weird. So I got to his house. By then, XP's Security Center had calmed down and reported no issues. However, opening and closing Firefox with Google as his homepage would create a detection in MS Security Essentials. MSSE called it a Blacole or Blachole exploit kit. It would show up in his Firefox cache.MSSE would quarantine it. I would delete it, and it be gone until I opened and closed Firefox again. Then it would appear again and MSSE would quarantine it again. So, I unplugged his computer from the net, and I ran a full Scan with MSSE. It found a Java exploit in some Java cache files with the common vulnerability name thingy CVR-2010-0840. It may have found some other stuff, but its not in the history any more.Than I ran a MBAM scan. It found a few more things:Files Detected: 6C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie\Desktop\Brian\Sony PC and nLIte and TinyXP files\(ACCUXP)\kv.exe (RiskWare.Tool.CK) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie\Local Settings\Temp\ICReinstall_PDFReaderSetup.exe (Adware.... Answer:Security Center service for Windows 7 cannot start & Security Essentials not working

Hi,

The Security Center service cannot be started due to virus destruction.

Have you tried the repair for Windows? If not, you can go to following SkyDrive to load the registry and import it to check the result.

http://cid-9fb18a384ebfc662.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Documents/wscsvc%5E564%5E6.zip

Before importing it, please back up the following registry key first. Just find the key and right click it, choose export and save to desktop.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc]

After importing the correct registry, please go to services Windows to check if Security Center starts properly.

Greetings,

This morning my pc got hit with this awful trojan called "Security Shield"...which has led to browser / search hijacks, Microsoft Security Essentials being disabled and unavailable to restart, and even an annoying flashing Windows login screen that prevents me from putting in my login password if I lock my pc.

Here is the DDS log and I've attached ark.txt and attach.txt.

Thank you for your help!

It?s not uncommon for security solutions to have issues with products offering functionality that overlaps or conflicts theirs, and Microsoft Security Essentials is no exception.

Apparently, Microsoft Security Essentials 2.1 fails to play nice with antivirus products and with some solutions designed to let users manage their computers.

In such cases, users will get an error message when launching MSE, according to the software giant.

Specifically, when they see Microsoft Security Essentially display the following: ?You haven't run a scan on your computer for a while. This could put your computer at risk,? they should know that something is wrong.

?This error appears as the result of third party anti-virus and/or system cleaner products conflicting with Microsoft Security Essentials,? Microsoft said.Click to expand...

Hello guys (and girls),I don't give up very easy, that's not really my thing. But this here, is really out of my league.I feel like giving up at this point and leave the Digital Western World to go live in a cave.I am trying over a week now to get rid of Microsoft Security Essentials.I even suspect that there are two different Trojans/Programs running (Security Tool & Microsoft Security Essentials.I think I really tried everything. Running Rkill.exe to stop processes. Ran malwarebytes at least 50 times, threw the outcome away, but it will pop up right after restart. Ran Spybot S&D, threw stuff out of the registry. Nothing seems to help What the programs do is that everthing is considered a virus by one of them (MSE/ST), the Pop-up will say: "firefox.exe is a virus", ctrl+alt+delete+ a virus, etc;* Websites as: Trendmicro Housecall and SuperAntiSpyware are being bloked;* Programs like Ad-Aware and TweakXp are impossible to install;I read a lot of post from people that said that after they ran MalwareBytes, everything was nice and clean again... IMPOSSIBLE! It keeps on popping up, no matter what I throw away. I really am out of possibilities right now.I really am thinking about ditching my laptop (even though I am very attached to it).Especially when I read some scary stuff. When I tried to run Combofix.exe (without helper, figured I have nothing to lose) the .exe removed itself from my desktop saying:"maybe you have some sort of Virut-Virus?&... Hi Folks, Sorry for another question so soon after my previous post yesterday...I just got my computer back from the repair shop a few days ago. They removed a virus. They installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and told me that only one antivirus programs should be active on my computer to avoid potential conflicts. However, I just noticed that they left McAfee Security Scan Plus loaded, since it popped up and started scanning a few hours ago.My question is: Is there any reason why they would leave McAfee Security Scan Plus loaded in addition to loading Microsoft Security Essentials, especially when they told me only one AV program should be active? Can those two programs peacefully coexist, or should I delete one of them?Thank you again for your expertise,Best regardsGary

What do you think of Vipre as a replacement for Security Essentials for Vista```What are you using``` Thanks RichardMod Edit...Moved to General Security from Vista ~~boopme

Answer:Vipre advanced security to replace security essentials

VIPRE Anti-virus, previously owned by GFI, is now developed by ThreatTrack Security Inc. but it was originally introduced in May 2010 by Sunbelt Counterspy...one of the early pioneers in anti-malware protection with an outstanding reputation for years. Counterspy was officially discontinued a year later and customers were offered the option to switch to VIPRE Anti-virus previously owned by GFI but now developed by ThreatTrack Security Inc. As with most security vendors, existing web site links were redirected to the new product.I have never personally used VIPRE. I have read it that it's blocking of malicious downloads was only adequate and that it's zero-day malware detection was below average. Generally if you're dealing with zero-day malware it's unlikely most anti-virus testing is going to detect anything since it takes time for new malware to be reported, samples collected, analyzed, and tested by anti-virus researchers before they can add a new threat to database definitions. The researchers at ThreatTrack Security need to show some improvement in these areas.

Hi! New member here and after trying to reply in specific threads and getting a message that I could not, I decided to just make a new one. So, I have some security questions. I have a Gateway NV78 and i had purchased CA Anti-Virus. I used it for about 9 months but wasn't impressed with the results. Long story short, I erased it and am now running Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes. Malwarebytes has been great but I'm just wondering if the Microsoft Security Essentials is good enough to be a stand alone Anti-Virus program? Any help/insight would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Security Question about Microsoft Security Essentials

Greetings, FtaTF85.

Posts are not allowed in existing threads in the Malware Forum, for obvious reasons. However, if you are having problems posting in existing threads in any of the other MG forums, that is a problem, and I'm sure one of the moderators will address the issues.

As far as Microsoft Security Essentials, there are many users here who have stated that the suite has greatly improved recently. I'd suggest continuing your own research, and I'm sure others will chime in with their pros and cons.

Good luck, and welcome aboard! :major

The red Windows Security shield icon keeps telling me my antivirus isn't turned on or it's out of date.  My green Microsoft Security Essentials castle icon tells me it is working and is up-to-date.  Am I supposed to have Windows antivirus turned off because I have MS Sec. Ess.?  If they're both turned on aren't they competing with each other and overtaxing my CPU?  If I have the Windows Security do I not need the MS Security Essentials?  Are they doing different things?  The Windows product mentions a Firewall but the Security Essentials doesn't.

However they need to be able to use the Remote Desktop client on their Windows 7 workstations to connect to the server from time to time. Does either of these versions of Server allow remote desktop connections and if so how many at one time?

Thanks!

Answer:RDP connections for Server Foundation or Essentials?

I believe Foundation is pretty much like 2008R2 and allows 1 RDP connection for admin purposes
Essentials is more like SBS and allows 1 admin RDP connection as well.
Essentials is limited in certain functions and hardware

I have it installed, and it boots to the dashboard, and starts the"Set Up Windows Server 2012 Essentials" dialog, it leads to "Error occurred during Installation" and says to reboot, or save logs, I have a copy of the logs files, if anyone would like them.

Im guessing the .254.254 is a uverse/att device?
Turn off the DHCP on the .254 device *or* add your current router into the DMZ type zone
Server should be sending out DHCP info

192.168.254.254 as gateway (or is you can do the DMZ mode use 192.168.1.1)

I keep getting a 153 error on disk 3. How do I determine which disk is 3? I have 3 new 4TB drives, does this mean one of them is bad? I have like 70,000 of these errors now and smart tools etc all say all of my disks are healthy. I'm non longer able to stream most stuff from the server, and writing to this disk seems to be causing this error.

All I could find is this when searching for the error (Same error I am getting only I have it like 70k times over a few days).

Looks like it's time to replace the drive. As for which one it is; this is why when I build a server I label the drives prior to putting it into production ( by the low-tech method of booting up without a drive plugged in, determine which one it is, rinse/repeat for all drives in system ).

So I need to migrate my old windows home server to an OS that can use advanced format hard drives.

I installed WSE just now and was looking for some information on how to configure it.

I I though there was supposed to be a way to connect to the server without joining a domain though?

I notice the server does not how up on the network from my windows 7 PC How do I get to the connector software? Do I have to join the Domain?

Answer:Windows Server Essentials Domain

Define "connect" to it.

I've just purchased a new Dell server with Server2012 Essentials for a work project, and while it is configured for a domain I can US RDP and shared folders from computers that are not attached to the domain. Granted because it's all in development at the moment I am using a admin account on the server for access rights.

Has anyone else gotten this combo to work?

Whenever I try to install WSE2012 through UEFI/BIOS it fails. The computer reboots before I even get into the setup GUI. So far, I have only been able to boot into DOS.

I've removed all PCIE cards, unplugged hard drives, and updated the BIOS to the latest version.

I verified the chksum of the WSE2012 against Technet so i know my download is good.

I burned the ISO to DVD & Flash drive.

Any ideas?

Used to use Avast antivirus which l was really quite happy with but it seemed to be getting rather resource hungry, and seemed to be slowing the system down, response wise. (Its icon kept whirling away but at least it indicated it was doing something!)
Changed to MS Security Essentials, and it does seem to do what it says on the tin. Things seems a lot faster now and it also has a very simple interface which is a doddle to use. (one niggle is that its icon disappears from the toolbar and you have to expand it again to see if its working).
Under Avast, and throughout the day, messages would pop up to say that the programs database has been updated.
Doesn't appear so for MSE (well not for me anyway). I have to manually update it each time. Have read their sites notes as well as this sites notes on installation and have made sure that no old virus software remains. Have reinstalled MSE, just in case, but it still requires updates manually.
For example, my computer has been on all day and MSE says it's covered. Just before writing this post, went into the updates tab, and manually downloaded another four signature files. How can it be up to date then?
Am l doing something wrong or am l missing the point somewhere along the line?
Thanks

Answer:MS Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates once every 24 hours and there is no setting within MSE to change the scheduled time or frequency. See the MSE Definitions/Signatures Update FAQ. As such, you can always manually download the latest Microsoft Security Essentials updates from the Microsoft Malware Protection Center Portal. Also see this announcement:Microsoft has confirmed an issue with Microsoft Security Essentials that can occur when some PCs are regularly offline for extended periods and are frequently toggled between sleep/hibernate and active mode. In some cases, these machines may be delayed in receiving their regularly scheduled signature updates.Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working on a solution. In the interim, we recommend that users who are not regularly online and who frequently sleep/hibernate their machines reboot or manually update their signatures at least weekly to ensure they have the latest threat definitions downloaded.Microsoft Answers

I've seen it suggested that MS Security Essentials is "good enough" to be used on it's own, w/o necessarily using another a/v prog.

I've always used NOD32, but just moved to Win7 64, and my version of NOD32 does support 64bit, I'd have to purchase it again.

Opinions?

Note: I am behind a rather large NAT firewall/router as well.

Answer:MS Security Essentials: Enough?

You don't want to run more than one at a time, their real-time engines can conflict and cause system problems.

MS Security Essentials is a very good AV. It is certainly among the top 5-8. There is no reason to pay money for an AV app these days.

Avira, AVG, MSE, and Avast all have excellent detection rates. Arguably, all of the major ones, the a fore mentioned free ones and the paid for ones like Norton, McAfee, ESET, are all within a few percentage points on detection rates.

Answer:MS Security Essentials

MS Security Essentials will provide you basic protection, I used to have it installed before switching to NIS but it didn't detect some malware samples and had a very slow scanning speed. It also had some false positives. It may be enough for the average user but it isn't for heavy downloaders. Go for a full suite for total protection

Hey Everyone!!

Help me out here please?

I've never been clear on what programs, as far as anti-anythings go that you can run while also running Microsoft's security essentials!

Can you or should you run Avast or Malwarebytes while Microsoft is running?

What programs Should you be running besides Microsoft's Security Essentials?

Thanks

Answer:Security Essentials And .. What?

You need:- one firewall (Windows firewall will do)- one antivirus program (If you have Microsoft Security Essenatials, which is an antivirus program, you can't have any other, like Avast)- you can have several antispyware programs installed (Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, etc.), bit you should run only one in real time; free versions of the mentioned programs don't run in real-time, so you can have them both

After Microsoft Security Essentials been out for FREE for a few months it surprises me how many don't know about this great tool.
I think many who have used it and tested it have decided that it is a good package in fighting off the foe.

I know that many will jump in here and tell me how they like all the rest and that is OK. I do know that no one software package will keep you totally free from those gremlins. Like others have said here just using a little common sense on where you go will dramatically reduce your chances of getting a trojan, virus or the flu.

Anyway I just wanted to keep MS Security Essentials on everyones try list.
I think you will like it.

Here is the Microsoft link if you decide to try.

and it is easy to install and uninstall not like the other big boy packages that like to hide stuff around.

Q: How is this different from Windows Defender?
A: Windows Defender detects and removes known spyware only. It is not designed to protect against the full breadth of malicious software, and specifically does not prevent viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious software from infecting your machine. Answer:MS Security Essentials vs AVG

Hello,

I and many other users on this forums use MSE, and we all agree it is a very good A\V. I have seen way to many problems with AVG to recommend it to others; I had a memory leak myself.

I recommend MSE because it is fast, lightweight, and does not slow down boot times much.

Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I then downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

Everything went along fine and may still be ................

Once MSE got installed, it then downloaded and installed a bunch of updates; about halfway through the update process, the RED stripe across the top of the window that did say "at risk" turned GREEN and says "protected"

Then it went into a "quick scan"; it says "this may take a few moments --- please wait"

It has been scanning non-stop for 15-1/2 hours and has currently scanned 28,770 items and counting.

The little progress bar is at a bit more than 1/3

Is this amount of time normal for such a first-time task ?

I have two desktops/towers, so I am in no big rush to use the laptop; I just didn't know if it should take such a long time.

Getting a lot of update failures recently for Microsoft Security Essentials, running with Win 7 Pro, 32-bit.
So far the following definitions updates have failed: 1.249.12.69.0, 1.249.1405.0,  1.2511.126.0, and 1.251.173.0. They all failed with error code 80070650.
I have Windows Update check for  updates every day, and what's odd is I've recently been getting the MSE updates two at a time and that started the same day the first failure occurred (8-19-17).
The update history lists 3 updates with today's date, but only 2 were offered when WU checked. So I don't know why 3 are listed with today's date:
1.251.170.0 successful (installed first)1.251.173.0 failed (attempted next) 1.249.211.0 successful (installed last)
Even stranger, the update history says 1.249.211.0 was successfully installed 2 days ago, so why was it installed again today..????
Malwarebytes and SAS say the system is clean...
The error code isn't informative, and my exact problem was reported 3 days ago on a German site here, so I'm not alone in this...
Anybody got any ideas..??

Answer:MS Security Essentials ?

UPDATE:
There's a thread over on the MS forum about this issue, but no fix offered, as of now... It may be the result of a botched update to the MSE scanning engine which was issued on 8-19-17.

I downloaded the current JAVA and removed the rest, but when I went to install the current JAVA it said it was already installed. 2. When I was running ComboFix, Secunia popped up and the message said "program changes detected," "3 new programs..." and "3 removed programs."

Hello,

This all began when I started have some issue with Firefox.  The bookmarks toolbar would disappear if I restarted FF, I would have to refresh webpages to get them to load, things like that.  I believe I have found the culprit for at least the bookmark issue, and I can live with refreshing.

However, in my stubborn attempt to resolve this myself, I attempted (and succeeded, several times in fact) to run combofix to try and help the situation.  My issue now is, combofix detects AV Security Essentials to be running, and I can find no instances or evidence of it anywhere on the computer in order to shut it off.  This is the only appearance of AVSE, I don't get popups or anything like that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

A PC that I am working on today has Microsoft Security Essentials installed as its AV program.

The MS Security Essentials Icon is visible in the Taskbar and when clicked MSE opens and options such as Scan and Update all work as expected.

However, in the same Taskbar the Windows Security Centre Icon is also visible which when clicked reports that "Your computer is at risk...Microsoft Security Essentials is turned OFF...."

Updating, restarting several times and numerous cups of coffee have not resolved the problem. MSE says it is ON while WSC says that it is OFF.

Any opinions as to which of these services is reporting correctly..

Answer:Security Essentials:

Hi raju.prof, and welcome to TSF.

Its entirely possible you are infected but first, try this.

The Security Service is not being started at boot time because it has been disabled. Go to Start - Run - enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and click OK. This will list all the system services. Scroll down to find the Security Center service, right click on it and choose Properties. In the "Startup type" box, use the drop-down menu and set it to Automatic. Click the Apply button, then click the Start button to check that the service is able to start normally, which it should. Now click OK to exit out. The Security Center service should start automatically on next boot.

Let me know if this works. If not, tell me what antivirus/spyware protection you have installed.

Now doing clean up of any and all remnants of AVSE, including Host replacing.

One step at a time, I can use browser and system seems pretty normal but we shall see what AVSE left behind.

Not sure how I got it, was browsing at the time with about 15 tabs open in FireFox 3.6.18

Will update this as I get 'er done.

I am running win xp pro 32 bit dual booted with win 7 home premium 64 bit. Is Ms security essentials good enough for antivirus and malware protection ?

Answer:MS security essentials ?

I use

Microsoft Security Essentials 4.2.223.0

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.70.0.1100

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.6.0.1014

in all my computers, and they protect it just fine.

No amount of protection will keep your computer 100% safe though if you have dangerous and irresponsible computing habits.

I recently bought a new laptop for my wife and I, with Win 7 64, and since I don't have a 64-bit version of NOD 32, I installed MS Security Essentials.

I've seen people state that it's as good as NOD 32, is this true? Any comparisons been made that support that statement?

Just want to make sure I don't need to buy another copy of NOD 32 and MS Essentials is actually as good as I've heard.

Thanks.

I've reached the end of my limited networking knowledge. Here's the deal:

- I have my home server running Windows Server Essentials 2012. Its primary function is backups of my various computers.
- My ISP is ATT Uverse, which provides a modem/router/gateway. It sucks teh ballz, so I set into bridge mode and set up a Netgear Nighthawk behind it. ALL devices are connected to the Nighthawk.
- I want to set up the server for remote access so that family can grab pictures and files remotely, and so I can do the same.
- I followed the instructions and the auto setup (I had to forward ports 80 and 443 manually, but that's done), and from the server's perspective, it says it is set up:

And now the problem:
When I try to access the sever from INSIDE the network, it loads the login page no problem. BUT, when I do so from the outside, the server sends no data, nothing loads.
Am I missing a setting on the bridged gateway?

I don't do these posts (Hey look at me, I'm awesome!!!), but this one needed to be made...
I am a graduate of both WHS v1 and 2011. I liked both, missed drive extender, and loathed my ATT Gateway as a result. That said, they always backed up on time, and the way I wanted, with no issues (until Drive Bender decided to bork everything and my Windows 8 laptop refused to play nice with WHS2011).

Well, my server needed an upgrade anyway, so I decided to gut it (mostly) and start over with the new Server Essentials 2012. (SE2012 from here on)

Old Specs: Core 2 Duo E4400, 2gb DDR2, Some s775 Asus board, and a 9800GT PE + a 2TB WD Green.

New Specs: AMD A6-3650, 4GB DDR3, an MSI A55m-P33, an Intel 120gb SSD for the OS, and I added two more WD Green 2TB drives (total 6tb).

I cannot emphasize it enough how easy the setup was. Drivers installed with no issues, straight from the mobo disk, and then updated through windows update. Unlike with my two WHS installs, I didn't have to trick them into thinking it wasn't a server OS etc. Getting DriveBender back in the form of storage pools was awesome, and again, set up with no issues whatsoever including built in duplication. The entire process, hardware switch included, took MAYBE 2 hours. That includes setting up a domain on the network with SE2012.

So, compared to my previous server OS experience, I also like the new dashboard. It's a bit easier to work with and makes a little more sense, though some of the dire... Read more

I have a WSE I use for backing up and stoaring data. I have like 10 hard drives connected to it 8 of which are running drive pool.

The Motherboard is toast, and well although it wasn't having any issues keeping up with some cameras and file storage and backups, I guess it might be time to replace it with my 4770k office PC (ex gaming rig) and upgrade that machine.

If I simply swap out the MB's are boot off the Hard drive with WSE be able to adapt to the new hardware? Can I at least recover the CD Key because I can't seem to find it anywhere.

It sounds like it would be well-suited to a home file server/backup, as it does full backup of client systems. It sounds like it does some of what WHS does, but is meant for a business market.

I think at one time SBS was able to do WHS-like drive pooling. I haven't seen any info, but can SBS 2011 do that?

I am just curious how well it works. Right now I have Server 2008 running with a virtual WHS for backups, but it's not really optimal as backups aren't really backed up. I have the clients doing a SyncToy backup, but it's not as reliable as I would like. I thought SBS could replace the pair working together, and would remove some complications and maybe be a little more dependable.

I have a new client with one server running Windows SBS 2011and 5 computers
that log into it.  The server is in a very unstable state throwing tons of errors at every angle, so the office has chosen to buy a new server running Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials.

My question is ? can I
setup the new server offsite and domain then when I get to the office completely
back up the old server, create new local accounts on the client computers and copy the data (My Documents, Favorites, Desktop Files and etc.) over to the new local account,
shutdown the old server, bring up and copy all the data to the new server, and then have the new client local accounts join the new domain?  Since this is such a small new domain,
does Windows Server 2012 R2 Essential require a DHCP and DNS server or can the SonicWall handle that?

I'm trying to help a friend to get their Windows Server 2012 Essentials setup up in their small business.

Server is operational, but I'm having issues connecting PCs to it...

I'm able to get to the server page by going to http://(servername)\connect
I can download the connector software, when I run it it finds the server it ask for user name and password.

After entering info it tries to connect for 20-60 seconds and fails with:

Cannot coonect this computer to the network
The Server is not available. Try connecting this computer again, or for more information, see troubleshooting connecting computers to the server.

any idea what could be causing?

could this be caused by network issues? They are using ATT DSL for internet access, with a ATT model, that is referred to as "gateway.pace.com"

They also have a zyxel smart switch, it seems that both ATT DSL and Zyxel switch are acting as DHCP, and both might be issuing IP addresses.

Another thing I noticed that they are using IP phones for all office phones.
All PCs are connected to the network with an IP phone as a device in the middle, that seems be slowing down the phones from normal gigabit to 10/100 only.

Any help would be grateful.

Hi all,

Just lately I have noticed that evertime I login to my Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials is telling me that I may be potentially unprotected! This never used to happen....I scan my pc and it always comes back clean..... just getting this potentially unprotected warning everytime doesn't seem right... I think It's been like this since the flame problem and since microsoft pushed out many security updates on the last patch Tuesday

Is anyone else getting this?

Thanks

Sam

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials

Are you by chance using CCleaner? If so, you need to go to the applications tab & uncheck MS AntiMalware.

If that's not the cause, it probably wouldn't hurt to D/L Windows Defender Offline on another PC, make the disk & run it at boot up on your PC:

I was recently having my google search results redirected in Firefox, along with random tabs opening. At the same time I noticed MS Security Essentials was not running. I tried to click "Start Now" but I get an error saying "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code 0x80070424." I installed and ran Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and it found 2 things: Rootkit.0Access and Trojan.Dropper.BCMiner. I quarantined and then deleted them. I am not getting the google redirects anymore, but MSE still won't start.

Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) does not control Windows Firewall, it is part of the OS.
It will however disable Windows Defender as it is a replacement for Defender.

Since the last lot of Microsoft updates 13/7 every time I turn on my computer the MSE icon on the systray has turned orange and I get the warning that I'm at risk because it's not done a scan for days. Obviously if the computer is not switched on at the time it will not scan.
Maybe best running it manually or remove it completely and then install it again.

I've just completed a clean install of an Acer PC using its Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade DVD (thanks to this community too: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version).

Now it's time to add few useful programs systems will use for security.

I've asked for a suggest on an other community where an expert user (seems he wrote also many wiki articles) answered me to use "Microsoft Security Essentials" only.

Now, I'm not a windows user since many years ago, but a friend asked me if I could re-install Win-7 on its pc, by now slowed down due to many bad apps and so on...
So, I don't know if MS security is a good choice or just it "sucks" compared to other third parties alternatives.

I'd glad if you could give me a feedback for that product.
Thanks in advance!

I know very few technical details in comparison to what that expert likely knows, but I whole-heartedly agree. I switched to Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) quite some time ago and have never looked back. There is no such software that is perfectly able to catch absolutely everything, and there is no better security on the internet than in having good-and-safe clicking habits for staying out of trouble -- no click = no trouble -- in the first place. But MSE does as well as any in an overall sense and it can do that without dragging your machine down.

Firstly try to run it as an administrator.
and check for Firewall settings (set them to default)

if so then first perform a cleanup of system and then try using MSE.

I have tried updating Security Essentials, and get "connection failed" - even though there is a good connection.
I tried downloading the update file (mpam) on a few other computers, and those never complete either.
I first noticed this yesterday (1-15-13) but the problem continues.
I'm trying to get the download file because that takes a lot less time that updating thru the program, and in this case the program can't even get the file.
Is there a problem with Essentials downloads?
It makes no difference what computer I use, I can't get past about 2% of the download. None of the computers are infected - all scans show clear.

So far I am extremely happy with MSSE. Just for an example it detected a trojan horse that got downloaded in a song file from Limewire from 2009 that none of the other antivirus programs that I used ever picked up. It detected it and cleaned it. The use of it is so much easier than any other program that I have used, and I have used them all, and I have to say that I am extremely impressed with the auto update and auto scan. It has never missed a scheduled scan and its real time protection has been outstanding. I am extremely happy thus far with MSSE and would recommend it to anyone. I have gone ahead and have removed any of the other third party programs from my computers and use MSSE exclusively. Both of my laptops are 5+ years old and run better than they did brand new. I run XP on both of them.

Hi allI know scurity questions figure quite often on here but need some advice about Micr Sec Essentials in particular,Is this a complete protection suite? (as Ive seen stated while browsing the internet)A relative is looking for free protection and I thought this might be the answer. Thanks

Answer:Microsoft Security Essentials

Yesif they have Vista or windows 7 use MSE and windows own firewall for realtime protection. As nothing provides 100% protection they can back it up with Spywareblaster as a blocker and Malwarebytes / SuperAntispyware as a weekly (or how often you like) to double check if anything has got through.

Hello

I was hoping a kind person could help me out with the following:

I was surfing the internet yesterday when a pop-up window appeared stating a scan of my PC was being undertaken. We use the free version of AVG Anti-Virus 2012 on our PC, so I closed the pop-up as it appeared to come from a rogue website. However upon closing the window another pop-up appeared from a program called 'AV Security Essentials' which stated that our PC had been infected with several Trojan viruses. This rogue program 'AV Security Essentials' appears to have installed itself on our desktop and Start menu. The pop-up asks for the user to give their payment details and upgrade their software in order to repair the viruses, so naturally I was suspicious! The internet connection appeared to go down temporarily as well.

I did a normal AVG scan of our PC and this found a couple of Trojan objects which I followed the instructions to quarantine/remove. I also did the following:

- Downloaded and ran 'rkill'. I have attached the log file to this post.

- Downloaded and ran 'Malwarebytes Anti-Malware' and did a full PC scan. The log file is again attached to this post. This found over 700 registry key objects with the words 'Security Hijack' in them.

- Downloaded and ran 'Super AntiSpyware' and did a full PC scan. The log file is again attached to this post. This found 6 browser hijacker internet threats.

I then rebooted the PC and the 'AV Secu... Read more
