I honestly cannot find good hardware

Question: I honestly cannot find good hardware

Here is the rundown:

In mIRC/MSN/YAHOO/AIM I get disconnected randomly. I may be in a middle of a conversation in MSN and it will boot me out. In mIRC I may get BLOCKS of information (like 5 minutes worth) in approximatley 2 seconds, or just get disconnected.

I also cannot download anything above 20mb. It will stop at 5mb, 1.9mb, 18.5mb (totally random).

I currently have Comcast HSI. I run a Motorola Surfboard 5100 cable modem, plugged into a Linksys BEFSR41. Both cable modem and router are BRAND NEW.

Silly as it may seem, this is the 3rd router. We had a BEFSR41 before, but it would "die" on us, about once every other day, until we unplugged it, and replugged it in. Before this, we had a netgear router, which worked flawlessly, BUT COULDNT send e-mail. (Strangest thing, could GET e-mail, but couldn't SEND e-mail. EVEN THOUGH THEY BOTH USE THE SAME MAIL SERVER. I could even telnet and ping the outgoing mail server. Tried in outlook, firefox, mozilla suite, etc. E-mail keeps me in business, so I switched to that BEFSR41.

So it seems I just cannot get it right. I just purchased a Cisco uBR904 router, but I cannot get it configured correctly to do what I would like, so will probably be putting it up for sale.

Now, the Motorola surfboard 5100 is about 1 month old. The "new" BEFSR41 is 1 month old. Obviously this combination is not working. I DO NOT CARE HOW MUCH IT COSTS, I want a router that will work flawlessly with SB5100. I want a router that will connect all "six" computers successfully without any problems. Is it just my luck. Could there be something absolutely stupidly wrong with settings or something lame? I have spent 15+ hours with linksys tech support, and 5+ hours with comcast, with no avail. Comcast says the same thing "if you can plug directly into the cable modem and there isn't a problem, then we cannot help you, it is your router."

Any suggestions please as far as combinations go. I would greatly appreciate it!

Preferred Solution: I honestly cannot find good hardware

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: I honestly cannot find good hardware

Have you just tried running just the 5100 directly into your computer? That way it will be easy to tell if your really dealing with router issues or if its not something else, such as cable modem, service itself or computer configuration.

A few weeks ago, My windows fell into hibernate and would not come out. I hard booted the computer and then windows wouldn't boot. It stuck on the windows load screen forever, until I hard booted it again. I'd read that in this situation the course of action is to try and repair the Windows installation, but that failed, so I reinstalled Windows. This worked for one boot, but when I restarted the computer it failed to load once again. I then installed Windows onto my OTHER hard drive, which worked once as well, never to work again. I'm thinking it's my original hard drive screwing things up because it's over a year old, so I removed it and tried it that way for a bit. This seemed to work well, so I reconnected the old HDD so that the NEW one would boot first and the old one would be the slave. This worked great for like a week. Now I can't boot windows from either drive. It stays on the load screen and never loads. I am able to boot Ubuntu from a CD which is how I connect to the internet. The computer also reads my other disk drive and the USB (There is no floppy). I can't figure out what the problem is. I've try detaching the old HDD again and no luck. I've downloaded the Ultimate Boot CD and run Memtest86 and the Data Lifeguard Diagnostics Quick Check (the HDDs are Western Digital, the old one is 80GB and the new one is 160 GB SATA.) These checks revealed no problems. What else can I do? Is there anything else on the UBCD that I ... Read more

Let me put this way: I have a medium-ranged machine that can support pretty much all major applications and games out there ( With the exception of those high-end games that have recently released ) However, for some unknown reason, there have been games in wich i have had a few issues. Here's what's constantly happening:

1- Whenever i look at more graphically detailed areas in certain games, the entire response time slows down. The game runs slow basically. And of course, if i move my mouse to areas that are not as detailed, it all responds flawlessly during those few seconds.

2- And now for the strangest part. Whenever i'm in servers with alot of people, the issues mentioned above tend to happen very frequently, and of course, when i'm in servers with 2-6 people or so, the issues mentioned above never happen.

I have no idea why this has been happening. I Cleaned my computer properly. I do virus checks every now and then. I have recently de-fraged my Hard Drive. I Clean up cookies, temporary files, etc.

Here's what i think: It most certainly isn't the graphics card's problem, as even when i put my settings (in games) all on the lowest ones possible.( this includes resolution ) I still have the issues mentioned above. But that's just a guess...

I'm not sure what could be doing this.. CPU maybe? The fact that my Computer's drive is nearly at it's maxed capacity? I tend to install alot of things.. could a nearly fille... Read more

For the best part of 4 months, I have created, modified and updated my website for my clan. As a 16 year old student/amateur web designer, I want to know what some normal people think of my website for my Gamespy Clan, and what I could do next to improve it further and improve my designing/coding skills. I ask people in Gamespy, but the weird guys, who don't like our clan for being different, are just plain stupid about it and my members have a biased view. Just want to know, as outsiders what you think and in what ways I can improve it?I have learnt many things about internet design since starting the clan, and wish to continue learnign more (I used to do nothing but swear at FP2003 for not doing what I wanted it to do, but now it all seems so simple). Any advice or opinions are appreciated, thanks.

Sorry to just barge in here, but I have a very strange computer problem, and I know next to nothing about computers.

Basically, what happened was I was going to plug in some headphones into my ASUS laptop, but I missed the jack and it went into the USB port, when that happened the computer shut off and restarted. When the computer came back on, it was very slow, and it didn't have Windows 7 visuals, just a very basic theme (like when you go into safe mode, except not huge). There's no noise, the screen is very dark, and most of my programs won't run.

I keep trying to set up a system restore point, but that's not working. When I go into services it seems a lot of things are disabled. Oh, and I don't have any network or wireless settings.

I'm very sorry if what I'm saying is very vague, but like I said, I really don't know much about computers.

Thank you all for any help that you can give me.

Answer:I Honestly Do Not Know What To Do

That is a very strange issue...sounds like you might of zapped something. You can try taking the battery out remove the power adapter and hold the power button down for about 30 seconds. Then replace the battery and power adapter and turn it back on. If this doesn't fix the issue, i hope you have a warranty on the laptop.

Hey charlieoneCan you give me some details on your computer specification.Msconfig:I see that you might be running msconfig in /auto mode which means that you may have selectively removed some items in the past from the startup procedure. This can be bad if they are malware, so we would like you to reenable those startup entries by doing the following:Please click on start, then run, and type msconfig and then press enter. When the window opens click on the startup tab and make sure there are checkmarks in every entry. Then press ok until you are out of the program. Answer:honestly .. is CIS the Best ?

CIS has bundled among other features a HIPS which will give you a really high degree of prevention , as with all host intrusions prevention systems there is a a downside ...the occasionally pop-ups that you may have to answer and those can be overwhelming for some security newbies.
COMODO has constantly improved there HIPS and added some interesting technologies like auto-sandboxing which should limit the number of pop-ups (eg. last time I had CIS installed , I've only received 2 alerts from the Firewall and 0 alerts from Defense+ ... and I do have a lot of programs on my system ) but they still need to work a little at the antivirus component.
So should you install CIS?
It depends on your computer skills and knowledge, the best advice that I can give you is to start a thread in our Security Configuration Wizard Forum. You should know that securing a computer is not just a job for your real time protection.

Problem: Whenever I stay idle on AIM for more than two or three minutes (by that I mean, I don't talk to someone and it happens), AIM stops connecting with the internet and I have to either restart it or it restarts itself. I've tried everything. I'm on my last leg here. I NEED HELP! PLEEEAAAASE!

p.s. I'll post a hijack this log if it's requested, but I don't think this problem has anything to do with spyware or a virus because I never click on malitious links or anything like that and I don't think I see anything unusual in my hijack this logs.

Many Attempts later to get my "tablet of my dreams" I am.. back at nothing. *sigh*
SO fellas... help me out here.. help me decide.
I originally wanted a little Wacom Digitizer Touch Screen Laptop/Notebook/Tablet (whatever name they wanna brand it) with some decent specs, but could get a little gaming in (mostly, honestly, Minecraft, maybe some older games like Fallout 2 etc, maybe a newer if it'll run etc, but Minecraft is a Must.)

So I found several models with Wacom Digitizers/Technology - although all of them seem discontenued now. Was willing to buy the "xbox360" version of a HP (overheat problem, etc) however was scammed (got my money back) by a fake website. Ebay had no luck either, as the 3 I "won" suddenly had messages saying "oh so sorry, I Broke'd it, I refund, no sell"
So.... I started thinking... what about New? Well poopy luck there. I only found HP's newest touchscreen with Wacom doesn't have a very decent GPU (Intel HD Graphics 3000) I know it's not a horrible integrated, it's leaps and bounds above most integrated, however I don't think it's gonna be able to handle Minecraft after looking at reviews and details. so.. back to nothing?

don't know which models Toshiba has (or anyone else then HP really) with Wacom Digitizer..... if anyone can point them at me... lemme know some facts.

So I considered "laptop now, touchscreen later" But a decent "gaming" laptop under say $700 is rough t... Read more

Answer:Honestly fellas... what should I do?

Well, touch screens arnt really meant for gaming so you'd be hardpressed to find one that could handle anything better than browser games.
And you're right, gaming well "laptops with a dedicated card" are not cheap, they ramp up the cost by liek 200 even if the thing isnt worth that!

but regardless, i wouldnt bother with touchscreens atm, sure they are cheap right now but everyone and his cousin still has one on the market to try and compete. It wont be til much later, when they weed out the rough ones for some worth buying that they will dedicate more money to making those touchscreens better,

IMO laptop now, touch later (some laptops do have a touch screen that swivels the monitor around so you can use it like a tablet, but they are few and far and usually junky) and if you still wanna draw, theres always a OO-ESS-BEE tablet

Hey everyone,~~~~(IF you only need the HijackThis, look below...) Problems and Solutions was checking to see which programs had crashed and a reported Trojan "~inst.exe" was found to have crashed at some point in February. Now because I noticed this now (a month later), I have no idea if it it is still there or not. The other day, Zonealarm found a trojan in Java (I didn't screen cap it) and reported that it was taken care of. My computer has began to run slower and the internet/internet browsers can act unstable at times since before that incident. So in general I really don't know if anything is wrong and I don't know how to search for nor remove any threats, so I came here.Notes: MalwareBytes has reported nothing wrong. ZoneAlarm reported that one trojan was supposedly taken care of. SpyBot deleted multiple trackers, but found nothing more. Hello. I need your honest opinion. Do I need more memory???

I am running 4GB (4096 MB) of RAM on my Windows 7 Professional 64-bit. I am planning to install and use high-end SONY video editing software to do some serious video editing. I know these kind of video editing software suites can draw serious system resources. I also plan to do some small tasks (like web browsing, checking e-mail on my Outlook, etc.) while some automatic video editing tasks are occurring at the same time at times.

Now, I know Windows 7 is very efficient with system resources. I took a look into the Windows 7's "Resource Monitor" and specifically "Memory" tab. I know by running more programs will increase the used or cached amount of RAM and reduce available RAM.

I tried to simulate the same experience the best I could. Now normally, I would not *all* of these *at once* typically, but I tried to demonstrate some sort of similarity. I decided to run:

- 4 well-known web browsers open in full screen.
- Outlook 2007 e-mail client in full screen.
- Word 2007 in full screen.
- play Windows Media Player music in full screen.
- run CCleaner's "Cleaner" in full screen.
- run a Webroot Internet Security Complete manual system scan.
- Windows Snipping Tool.

After all these running processes completed and leaving them still up and running even if they are idle for about 15 minutes, I received at max. 56% used physical memory. I attached a image file to ... Read more

But I have noticed that my computer has been slower than usual these days...

I've followed the steps in the initial "read me" thread, and was able to get rid of a few things.

Now I was just curious if it looks like I can do any more cleaning up with HjT. (I don't know a whole lot about this program, so it's always possible there's absolutely nothing wrong. )

However, there are a couple things that concern me specifically:

1) I don't have BitDefender, MSN Messenger, or anything by Symantec. But all of those are shown on the log, and they all say "(file missing)." Are those safe to delete? And what exactly are they?

2) The following lines also seem to be about MSN Messenger or MSN Chat. I don't use either. Is it safe to delete them?

Quote:

3) All the things like Activescan, Housecall, Bitdefender and WScanCtl seem to be from online virus scans. Why are those still there, do they affect my computer's performance, and can I get rid of them?

I know I have no idea what I'm talking about, so I hope I don't look completely clueless... :)

In any case...here's the log. And thanks in advance for the help.

Welcome to TSF.

Took a quick look and don't think I spot anything harmful also. But before we continue, please get XP SP1a first...

You must install XP SP1a http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/d...1/default.mspx (hold off on SP2 until your computer is clean). Without SP1a, you are wide open to re-infection. When you are done, restart and run a new HijackThis scan. Post that log here.

Answer:Honestly, This Pc Has Lots Of Popups

Sorry, I am new to this. I didn't put too much info in that post. The pc I am trying to clean of popups/adware/malware is running Win2k pro. I ran Microsoft's AntiSpamware twice, Spyware Vanisher twice and Trend's Housecall. All found items to remove and I removed them. However, popups are still coming up on this pc. I have submitted the HiJack This log file above. All help in resolving this is much much appreciated.

Okay, this situation really makes no sense to me. I've run into a fair amount of issues in my time, and so has my boyfriend (the owner of the computer experiencing issues). We, to be frank, have no idea what the heck is going on.

He has a Dell running XP Home Edition and actually told me not to post on a form and try to find some help, because he just wants to throw it out. But, the poor thing's only a year old and one of the last computers that were available running XP. I refuse to let him give up.

So here we go.

It began last night. He's done this before -- he has two monitors, one meant for a TV (I believe) and another old computer screen. Normally it runs on the TV one because it's bigger. He switched to the older one to show me how he can adjust the settings so that it's all vertical. That was great and dandy and we didn't expect any issues. He's done it before and it really isn't doing much to the computer.

Later, after midnight, he goes to switch everything back to normal. First, the computer acts like the monitor is there but that it can't do anything -- it tries to go into sleep mode or something. Then I suggest he unplug, shut down, plug things back in normally, and power back up. This appears to work.

I was a bit happy then, until we got to the XP loading screen. It's going... and then after, it flashes, then goes black. Nothing comes up, nothing does anything.

And so the three hour saga of last night begins.... Read more

Wow, I never thought I would ever come to the day I would say this, but I might want to consider a Windows tablet. Yep.

The reason why I would want such a device is the fact that it will have Windows 8 on it, which we all know, can make a great touch UI compared to iOS or android. And also, Windows 8 tablets will come in different offerings, such as ARM, AMD, and Intel processors or AMD APUs. That I like. And, Windows tablets (or should they be called slates) do offer a level of customization that the ipad will NEVER offer: USB ports, HDMI, storage upgrading, and the ability to be a stand-alone device without wireless syncing that the ipad relies on. And Windows Slates beat out android with the fact Windows 8 won't have subversion of 2.XX.X or 3.XX.XX or 4.X.X version, it's just Windows 8.

Those are my reasons.

My only concern is how I will do with Office software and typing, and also if I want to do ANY gaming of sorts. That's kind of the Achilles' heel of a tablet, I like to game. I'd have to play with one to see if I can be used to a non-tactile keyboard, but from what I've read about the new keyboard is that it'll be more customizable and resizable.

I don't know for sure though, what do you guys think? Out of all the potential options of mobile PCs that Windows 8 will bring, would a Windows tablet be worth it?

Answer:I'm honestly considering a Windows 8 tablet.

Well, its no surprise to me that you've wanted tablets for a long time now and yes, you were right with the Achilles' heel. Maybe you Should bring with you a small portable keyboard and a mouse in case you need to game or use Office but I bet most tablets aren't powerful enough to run those really good games though nor would its small display give you a really good experience so maybe you will have to wait for a few more months until a more powerful tablet comes into the market with Windows 8 in it. Patience will pay off in the long run.

I have a realy BAAAD problem.

I don't exactly remeber when it started doing it, but I don't care. It needs to be stopped.

My computer freezes at random times. Very bad times, when I don't need it to stop working. (Well, I never do. Being a hardcore Toontown fan, all of my "work" is important.)
Not just "Blahblah.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close" or extreme re-buffering, without warning, it just STOPS. No audio is heard, the mouse can't move, the screen doesn't move, and nothing will EVER happen. I have to manually re-start the computer. BUT, it ONLY happens when the internet connection is ENABLED.

I do have Web-Nexus pop ups, but the freezing has been happening for three years, even if Norton anti-adware was on.
I mean, I have a LOT of bad stuff on my computer that won't go away.

My XP computer is begging of you. Nah, actually it's on their side by now.

Answer:This Gets In The Way Of My Social Life. Honestly.

I think you need to get it clean before anything and probably post a HJT log (since it sounds to me like you really have not been overly concerned with fighting malware of any sort.If I had a problem of any sort with my system, I would start with a check of Event Viewer. I got a new computer a couple months ago because my old one had old specs 1.7cpu,256ram,gforce2, stuff like that you know + it was just old. So I gota new one 3.4cpu, 512ram, rad700pro, and it works fine and all but sometimes after its been on for a couple hours it just seems alot slower than my old one, and sometimes it will lock up for like 20secs and then do one of those super speed catch up things, and im not running anything different. So I was wondering what could be causeing the computer to run slow, it is alot smaller than my other one, alot more compact. If you really wana look at the specs its an alienware bot they have it on their webpage.any help would be awesome, thanks guysPS: my computer came with a modem can I take that out cause? I use cable, like will it help anything, like it won't take away from the power supply or something like that, cause the fan on my video card is like amost touching it and I don'think thats helping to keep it cool at ahh, I don't need it so can I just take it out?

Hi, I purchased my computer a few months ago and have upgrades it twice with a new video card and power supply, everything runs amazing, Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Max Payne 3, L.A. Noire, Rage, Witcher 2, Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2, Civ 5, Arkham City and more ALL 60 FPS at a beautiful 1920x1080, yet darkness 2, warhammer space marine, Deus ex human revolution and saints row the third all hover at about 20 fps no matter the settings, just really frustrating that my gaming pc I have al least $1000 into already cant run a few, less hardware intensive games. I have all current drivers installed, so I'm literally at wits end here. Here are my specs:

Mainboard :Gigabyte M68MT-S2
Chipset :Family 15h Processor HyperTransport Configuration
Processor :AMD FX 4100 @ 3717MHz
Physical Memory :8192MB (2 x 4096 DDR3-SDRAM )
Video Card :NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
Hard Disk :Seagate ST500DM0 02-1BC142 SCSI Disk Device (500GB)
DVD-Rom Drive :ATAPI iHAS124 B
DVD-Rom Drive :JKHSL TMNKLM70XAZ0
Monitor Type :E421VL - 42 inches
Network Card :NVIDIA nForce 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet
Operating System :Windows 7 Home Premium Home Edition Media Center 6.01.7601 Service Pack 1 (64-bit)
DirectX :Version 11.00
Windows Performance Index :5.9 on 7.9
Power Supply: Thermaltake 850w Black Widow

Answer:Good hardware, low FPS

Please can anyone help? I don't mind spending the money to upgrade my hard drive if that's the problem, 500GB isn't enough for me anyway cause I'm thinking it's a memory problem but I don't know for sure, can't find much info on this.

Hello, thank you, bless you, and just to let you know, I *do* worship the ground where BleepingComputer technicians walk.

I am attempting to fix a family computer that has several viruses. It was mostly used by a sibling, and it was when they were using it that all the viruses/malware contaminated the computer and made it inoperable. (or at least to them.) I did not give this computer much passing care because I have my own laptop (what I am typing on now) and since they had screwed themselves over, why should I bother? The sibling in question just took up my mother's laptop, and so my mother kinda lost her own computer. When the laptop was being squirrely (2 keys knocked out, etc) my mother sent it off to Best Buy, but it was only then that the dearth of computers was noticed. So, in an act of heroism and practicality, I attempt to repair the computer.

in media res P.S. - I am mediocre with the computer - I have enough technical skills to get me where I need to be, so the helpful god/goddess that responds doesnt have to dumb it down to, say, my mother's understanding.

It is a perfectly good computer from about 2005 (maybe 2006) with XP.

Computer is squirrely, slow, internet access is hindered (does not show pictures), there was a blue screen that said "there are malware or spyware detected on this computer. please download anti-virus software".

Hello, this is my first post on this forum and I hope to have an enjoyable time here.
Anyway, recently I've had some malware and spyware(fake anti virus program) I used Malwarebytes to destroy it, and everything was fine, it was gone.
After I rebooted, it was gone..but my computer seemed a bit slow. I dismissed it.
Now, every time I google something, it redirects me to another page. I ran a full scan of Malwarebytes again(I have the paid version) and it came up clean. I then thought it was spyware. i downloaded Spybot Search and Destroy, and it found like 8 files and I fixed the problems..I scan(before rebooting) and it's clean. I reboot, and the SAME THINGS are back. I have no idea what to do now. I don't think it's too serious, but it's really annoying. I don't want to reinstall please. I have windows 7 by the way
- Thank you!

for a few weeks now, I have been having a major issue with dropped letters when I type. I have replaced my keyboard twice now, run spybot and fixed problems, etc. I run McAfee also, and started that a month or so ago. I called Mcafee, thinking it was their product, they had me turn everything off and it still happened. I tried using internet options security to change auto fill options, thinking it was maybe trying to read ahead, but nothing there either. I have downloaded hijack this, and have a log file, but will await instructions here if anyone has other ideas. I write a lot, and this has really been a pain in the butt. I appreciate any advice anyone here might have. Michelle

Hello, everyone! It is me again! I bet you've missed me and my troubles, haven't you? =P Well, let's get down to business then, shall we?

The problem I am having .. I honestly do not know if it is a Windows problem or a Virus problem. I have run Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware (which 4 of my friends who've never had a problem suggested) as well as my antivirus scanner Avast! (full scan, not quick scan) all of which found nothing aside from some cookie adware threats which were removed with SAS.

I run Vista Home Edition on a Toshiba Satellite L45 - S7423 (just in case!) laptop. Christmas gift in .. 2007? Either 07 or 08.

I first noticed something was wrong earlier this morning when I got online. My little connection icon (which normally lights up when there's connectivity) usually has a blue world over it's two monitor like icons. When there is no internet but my wireless router is turned on, there is no world but there is flickering lights. When my router goes out, there are no lights and a red X over the little monitors. Well! As of now I can be online but it still shows there is no connectivity and the little red X is still there. When I hover over the icon, I get the following message:

"Connection status: unknown
Server execution failed"

I have NEVER gotten this before. When I try to open up my "Network and Sharing Center" the window/folder freezes completely and I am unable to close it. I have to open up my task manag... Read more

Hell I have a
Motherboard X59A-UD3R
Processor: Intel Core i7 930 @280Ghz (8CPU) ~2.8GHz
Video Card: Nvidia GeForce GTX460
Power Supply: 750 Watts

Now I was looking at upgrading and wanted to know if this is better as I'm still new at all of this stuff
Case:CM Storm Scout Gaming Case SGC-2000-KKN1-GP
Motherboard ASUS P6T SE Core-i7 Motherboard
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 or CPU Intel Core2 Quad Q9400
Video Card: Something better but don't know yet.
Power Supply: 750 Watts

So my question is there a lot of stuff here and I'm trying to make sure I have it right can anybody give a little light on if this is okay or bad then what I have.

Answer:Hardware Upgrade 7, Is Good?

Going from a i7 930 to Q9400 would be a backwards step. They came out in 2010 and 2008 respectively. Actually I upgraded FROM a Q9400 to a i7 930 several years ago and noticed a boost in performance. The 930 is 1st generation - Intel are now on the 4th gen. I still use the 930 and, as well as being slower than the newer versions, it runs kinda hot when overclocked (80C). My advice is have a look at the latest Intel chips.

Before I go off to crazy recommending this to friends and clients. What's your take on this piece of hardware in terms of performance on the Untangle platform? Which I have already made some recommendations, and pointed some people in its direction.

It looks good for small deployments (which is what I am aiming my recommendations for). Do you all have any other recommendations?
I also just noticed I used recommend (and similar) a bunch of times in this post as well as not being sure if this belongs in Hardware or Network Security? Mods move if necessary.

That will be plenty.

Hi, I am new here; I tried to post in the most relevent topic but my problem may be more broad than hardware. Please point me to the right topic if this is the incorrect one.tl;dr: (1) My computer has good hardware for gaming but runs very poorly at strange times..(2) Boot times are unreasonably long, and the computer is unusable for ~30 minutes.(3) On intensive games or games with uncapped frame-rates, white "flickers" occasionally occur on screen, and a constant background audio "buzz" can be heard.I am hoping for some advice on how to fix my computer's performance, or at least point me in a good direction to troubleshoot. ----My computer is primarily used for gaming, but experiences a lot of "lag" (taking an unreasonable amount of time to start programs, software becomes unresponsive, explorer.exe frequently crashes and must be restarted) even when doing the most basic things, such as using windows file explorer to find a program shortcut. It also takes ~10 minutes to boot up, and after that once I log in it usually runs so slowly that it takes around 20 minutes before it is usable. Programs that I try to start will not start for up to 5 minutes, and once they do they often function so slowly that they appear unresponsive (but if I wait, they do eventually work). I have tried general fixes such as defragging, checking for malware and rootkits, cleaning up junk files, etc. I have disabled all unneeded startup programs as well, but startup ... Read more

Answer:Good hardware, bad performance?

Welcome to the forums.Sounds like you may have a few separate issues to be honest, I would start by testing your HDD (I'm assuming you have a HDD but if you have an SSD, please say).  A failing HDD has the potential to cause similar issues to most of those that you describe.  You can test the drive by using the manufacturer's utility (e.g. Seatools for Seagate drives) and running the long test, or by using the free version of HD Tune which has an error test tab.The buzzing and other issues you mention with uncapped frame rates is fairly common and as you seem to have deduced, is purely down to the uncapped and extremely high frame rates, typically experienced on some game menu screens.  If capping the frame rate resolves these issues I wouldn't worry too much.Post back with your results once you've tested the drive and we'll see where we can go from there.

Hello guys,
so I got myself GTA V and it's amazing but the only problem is while it's playable it's not exacltly 60 fps.
It is chopy(not all the time but when in the city or somewhere where is a lot going on around) and when driving on higher speeds it drops onto like 25-30 fps, and I play on normal settings!
I got an AMD Athlon X4 760K, MSI R9 270 and 8 GB(1866 Mhz) RAM!
I updated my GPU drivers but for some reason I cannot find drivers for my CPU!
Do you happen to know why am I getting these framerates and maybe where can I find the latest AMD CPU drivers?
Thank you in advance!

Answer:GTA V not running good considering the hardware

CPU's do not need drivers. Your hardware may not support this game at full settings

Hello Mj Geeks,

I need to replace a processor. The processor socket is AM2+. Having trouble finding that particular socket type.

Tried the usual suspects like, TigerDirect, NewEgg even the Compaq site. No luck.

Searched MjGeeks shopping too. No luck.

Do any of you have really good (and reliable and honest) online stores you like?

Thanks in advance!

Answer:Good hardware resources

If the existing board and CPU are socket AM2+, you can use an AM3 CPU on the board, with the following caveat:

AM3 CPUs fit in AM2+ motherboard sockets (the difference is the AM2+ board uses DDR2 memory; an AM3 board uses DDR3). Before buying a new CPU, however, be sure your make and model of motherboard supports the CPU you're considering. In some cases, you may have to perform a BIOS update on the board before installing the new CPU.

Hope this helps.

That message is nonsense. the is no such option in the bios.

I don't know Vbox, but there must be an option somewhere in it where you can check a box to enable hardware acc.

And its freaking pissing me off. When I occasionally go on Youtube, my laptop screen goes black and hangs up until I do a hard reset. If I wait for the black to go away it just doesn't. It will show some buttons on my screen but for the most part it just goes black and I can't do anything until I force a shutdown by holding down the power button. This is NOT cool. I could be damaging my laptop in the longterm if I don't find a work around. And this annoying issue only happens when I go on Youtube sometimes. First the battery problem and now this? Can someone give me a solid solution to this problem or will I have to toss this laptop out my apartment window? I know it has to do with the graphics card in some shape or form and I know 100% that I can't be the only one experiencing this problem.

Answer:Honestly, this annoying problem I have had for months on end... [X201]

Here, let me PM you a Valium. Feel better now? Let's look at the issue, determine a cause and figure out a solution. First, does this happen each and every time you go to youtube or just sometimes. It isn't clear from your description if you only occasionally go to Youtube (and it hangs everytime) or it only hangs occasionally (but you go to Youtube often.) YouTube is just a website like any other but may require some plugins or updated drivers. This isn't a Lenovo issue but may be an issue with drivers or the browser you are using.

Hello guys!

I just bought a new computer the other week:

i7 920
12GB DDR3 RAM
EVGA X58 mobo
EVGA GTX285

I have Windows 7 (x64) build 7264 installed and encrypted on a 32GB SSD.
(I also have a 1TB drive for storage.)

I installed it about a week ago and lately it has been becoming sluggish and unresponsive at times. Mostly when loading webpages with lots of pictures or videos. I've tried 3 different browsers with the same result. When watching streaming video, it freezes randomly for a few seconds at a time when playing (but the video play bar shows that it's loaded way past the point where it freezes). I don't think it's my internet connection, because it's pretty fast (university) and I don't have these problems in ubuntu. Also, iTunes sometimes takes 5-10 seconds to gain window focus when I click on it.

I'm having trouble pinpointing where the problem lies. It's obviously not the memory. The processor does't seem to be under a heavy load (and it has 4 cores). Could it be the SSD somehow? It is one of the cheaper ones. My ubuntu installation is on the regular hd and works fine.

Thoughts/ideas/suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
hoozey

Hi all
It's very difficult to get really good advice on this but I'm now trying to build the "Ultimate" HOME server machine.

Note the machine will be essentially used as a HOME (not a commercial / work) server so it doesn't need all the fancy gaming state of the art graphics cards etc.

What it DOES need is enough RAM and horsepower to run 4 Virtual servers, whilst also file and print sharing to a number of "remote" (actually a LAN) workstations.

A "Blade" type server would be OK in a commercial environment but my server needs to be a bit like a conventional workstation.

I need around 16GB RAM (seems hard to get a basic motherboard with enough memory slots these days), and a QUAD CPU. The I/O subsystem nust allow for around 8 drives and two DVD/CD units to be connected and have video output capability to drive 2 monitors (although most of the tine the monitors will probably be disconnected.

I need to have as well at least 2 but preferably 3 Network cards on it.

Most of the stuff I've looked at seems to be more geared to high performance gaming or running NASA's next Mars mission.

A SERVER doesn't need hideously expensive gear - but it does need the capability to have loads of memory and disk drives to be connected to it.

Any IT admins out there who use this type of stuff at work -- recommendations.

The ability to run 4 Virtual servers decently is essential so 16GB of RAM is the minimum -- Ideally I'd like 64GB but that's pro... Read more

Jeez...I run a handful of ESXi servers at work and I usually put 24GB of RAM in those to run 10-12 concurrent Linux and Windows servers and that usually doesn't max out the RAM. So, I would have to imagine that 16GB of RAM is going to be more than enough for home use and 4 VM's.

Quite a number of new mobo's support 16GB of RAM...it will just have to be a 4 x 4GB setup. Quad core CPU's are a dime a dozen. The I/O subsystem to allow that many drives will likely just involve adding on 1 additional controller card. And just about any modern video card can easily handle dual monitor support.

More and more, I am faced with hardware problems (as opposed to malware or OS corruption) on computers I'm asked to diagnose.

Can anyone recommend or suggest a good Hardware diagnostic utility or utilities that will make my job easier? At this point, going the old route of unhooking one component at a time (or unhooking all and adding one back in at a time) is taking its toll on me. Spending $$ on a good reliable software tool that can be run from a USB drive, CD, or installed and uninstalled for troubleshooting multiple systems is warranted.

Any help is appreciated. Many thanks.

Hello all,
Thanks for looking at this post.
Ok i'll start with saying im new to building your own pc from scratch, wanted to gain some wisdom and advice from you guru's, before i do a possibly much longer post, erm no possibly about it i wanted to check im in right place to do that??
Ideally i would like to get opinions, thoughts and ideas about the hardware i have spent a while, errr i guess researching i.e if and whats compatible ect.
The actual putting together in the case is no problem as im a vehicle mechanic, so im use to wiring, ecu's, and fiddly things, i do understand putting a pc together and getting it right is a different thing, hence why im here, im struggling with the terminology, whats compatible with what ect.
I have colated a list of some hardware and am only looking to build a middle of the road pc, as im not a hardened gamer or graffic designer, so a extremely super powerful, enough to control the large hadron collider one isn't what i need
So if im in the right section, i can do a reasonably long post and you guys can handle getting bored then please let me know if this/that is ok.
Regards
Ghostylad

So I held off till now until most of the bugs were cleared, and major issues were addressed ( drivers and what not ), and I have to say, I like the fact now 3 of my devices across 3 form factors all have the same look, feel, and layout.
Game rig ( waiting on new video card, running Intel built in atm), Acer Iconia W3 Tablet ( snappy and fun now), and my Nokia Lumia 1020...I'm even thinking Windows 10 would run very well on my Acer Revo 3610 Nettop ( Upgraded RAM, running Win 8.1 ).
The tablet is where I have been most impressed, as it was good under 8.1, but just didn't seem to have any way to improve or let me push the edges.
Under 8.1 at times it would just bog down, and I was expecting that when I bought it. Now under Windows 10 it is no super hi-way speed demon, but it is a whole bunch faster switching between apps. It still has it's slow down when first booting up, but once everything settles down it runs quicker then under 8.1
Add I searched for ways to give myself more space on the SSD, and I now have about 12 Gig free ( of 32 Gig ), and a good class 10 Micro SD for added space also 32 Gig
By removing prior install, and set up files I swear it seemed to add a little speed ( but maybe that is just a mind trick, and always make sure you have an original back up before you ever remove what I did, so you have a way back in case of crash, SSD failure, or any other disaster)
Now if only Bamboo would help out with some cheaper pen/stylus support it would make my W3 into a Bud... Read more

As i was upgrading some security patches from the microsoft website for Windows XP home, i saw that there are couple of hardware updates also recommended on the Microsoft Websites.. as i HAD some problems with my intel chipset Modem i m a bit reluctant in downloading those updates... but it definitely offered an update of the Intel Chipset modem driver .. my modem still doesnot connect at more than 38.6k... so is there a possibility that by downloading those driver it will connect at over 40k ...? during troublesome days it use to connect at below 10k... i don't want to go back to those days..

So how good you think that MS recommended drivers are..??
Thanks..

Answer:How good are the Microsoft Hardware updates are..?

I would try to find a driver right from the manufacturer's site...in this case Intel, before you use the one from Windows Update. Use the Windows Update only as a fall back.

Is there any good PC hardware shop online that has global reach capable of free shipping in an Asian country that is the Philippines? Preferably with the credibility of big companies like Ebay, Amazon, et cetera. Even small companies so long as its credible will do.

I know this may sound cheap, but I intend to buy online what is apparently an obsolete hardware for an AMD Phenom II X3 720 microprocessor. My desktop computer having this as the CPU chip just recently got broken and the faulty hardware is the motherboard. Looking through shops locally, any motherboard brands for it are either out of stock or simply just phased out.

As such, as part of the category, I am also looking for an online PC hardware shop that still sells hardware parts of this caliber.

Any suggestions?

The problem with those test is their is nothing there about reliability.

I use mostly Intel SSD's. I know now as I new then they were not the fastest but very reliable. They have a 5 year warranty by Intel. Which is a company that is going to be around in 5 years just in case I need a RMA.

Hello there, I'm new to this forum and thought I'd get some insight into a few issues I'm kind of annoyed/confused about.

First off, I'm a techie and well aware of most ways to increase speed and fix the problems I seem to be having.
However, I must be missing something that one of you might know, and I'd appreciate your input.

I built my own PC with the parts that I have displayed on the pictures below.
I'm confused about why my computer is slow even though similar laptops/PCs with equal to less powerful hardware perform
quicker and more efficient than mine. I have used CCleaner, defragmented, etc.. and performed all the required and suggested
operations that are supposed to make a PC faster/cleaner. If you can let me know if maybe my parts don't complement each other in a way that should, or something completely out of left field that I have overlooked, I would love that.

Lastly, I'm concerned that my CPU is heating up more than usual. Once, my computer shut down because of excessive heat in my CPU.
I cleaned my PC and CPU, changed the thermal paste, etc... It has not shut down since. However, it increases in temperature rather quickly when I start even a simple program such as VLC for video viewing, or my web browser (Chrome).
I have posted a picture with my CPU Temperature running virtually on idle, with only google drive and sticky notes running on idle.

Let me know what kind of changes you think I should... Read more

I was wondering if my PC really is able to run these games on max settings at a constant 60+ fps, because I was lead to beleive that they were:

Battlefield 1942
Call of Duty
Call of Duty: United Offensive
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Return to Castle Wolfenstein

Oh yeah, my PC specs are:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ EE
Mushkin EM PC2-6400 2X1GB
XFX NVIDIA GeForce 7900GS

All overclocked. For The first three games, my fps will always be 30-40 with 8XSAA, and it will be a constant 60+ fps, with fps drops to around 55 when I use 4XAA (except for RtCW, where it will be a constant 90+ fps, with random drops down to 70).

I really should be running ALL of these games COMPLETELY maxed out in EVERY possible way with a CONSTANT 60+ fps, but it just isn't happening... Is there any reason why? I'm sorry if I sound rude, but it's really frustrating, I bought this computer just so that I can play the older games that I loved on max settings.

A Microsoft Forefront appliance is going to be overkill and expensive. What kind of devices should I look at? Zykel, Watchguard, Sonicwall? How will devices compare to my current setup in terms of security and performance?

Hey everyone. Could anyone recommend a good online computer parts store that is reliable? Basically, I'm looking for a set of basic speakers and headphones. A couple of months ago, I bought a set of speakers but found out that they didn't have a headphone port. Therefore, I need new speakers. Also, my headphones got broke the other day so I need to replace them as well. I am just looking for a basic set to play CDs and games with. If anyone has any recommendations for headphones or speakers, please do give me a recommendation. Otherwise, a recommendation for ag ood online parts store will suffice. Thanks!

I tried looking for reviews for the SAPPHIRE 100600L-Red Video Card, but I can't find any. I tried google and there are not customer reviews on the site that I found it on (newegg) If you want to see the video card that I am talking about, it is right here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102466
By the way, I don't know if this is just supposed to be in the chat forum but I figured that somebody in the hardware forum may already know something about this card.

Have a look at the websites of some of the games that interest you and check out the system requirements. That'll give you a guide as to what's required.I'm no games expert, but I've a sneaky suspicion that if you try and load some of the latest games on a 1.6 GHz celery with integrated graphics, it'll grind to a halt.

Hi all I have purchased an X220T and in addition to the oft-mentioned screen problems elsewhere here I have a variable texture in the screen of my system which means different areas of the screen go from high-inertia to low-inertia (not a problem with any tablet I have seen before including an X201T I use). This entirely ruins the tablet experience. Has anyone else had this problem?  Of note, the returns department were very unhelpful (culminating in being on hold for 15 minutes). I am now going to have to pay $200 shipping to get the system back to the US to get refunded as I am not in the US any longer and there is no local service centre I can find on this website. I have no faith in Lenovo now and wish I had read the warning signs on this messageboard. I hope others considering the X220t  read this and realise that this is a flawed system with clear manufacturing problems that is not apparently fit for sale.

Answer:I honestly wish I never bought an X220T - another, larger screen problem

hey ahabroad, sorry to hear on what had happened. would it be possible for you to try and update the unit of yours ?at the same time do provide a screenshot of the monitor.

I plan to build a system with an Intel Core 2 E6600 with a NVidia 8800 GTX and was wondering if there is any big problem with running my copy of Windows 2000 Professional I already have. I still use it with my 3Ghz Pentium 4 and it's been perfect for me.

If it's not wise to run Windows 2000 on this new hardware is it better to get Windows 2003 64-bit or Windows XP 64-bit and why? I pretty much use my computer to play games like Half Life 2, Flight Simulator 2004, Doom 3 and to watch movies and look at pr0n.

Boy that pr0n is gonna look great with that 8800GTX. </heavy_heavy_sarcasm>

2K had it's time in the sun, now it's past. Get XP SP2 on there and you'll be fine. As most others will tell you, with any 64 bit OS you're going to encounter issues with gaming and drivers. I personally don't have any issues at all on this Core 2 Duo running at 1.66 GHz and using Intel GMA950 onboard graphics, so that monster you're going to build would absolutely scream with XP or Vista for most intents and purposes.

But sticking with 2K at this stage in the "game" of Windows and computer hardware would be like putting racing stripes and a Recaro seat on a Segway...

I'm looking for any suggestions for a good DVD Making software that will burn HD movies. I have a HD Camcorder and my computer seems to bog down whenever I try to make a DVD using Windows DVD Maker that came with Windows 7. I'm not a big fan of Windows DVD Maker anyway, there aren't many customizing features to the program. Anyway, my hardware setup is as follows:

OS: Windows 7 Professional (32-bit)
CPU: Intel Celeron M, 1.4 Ghz, Single Core
RAM: 2.0 GB
It is a Laptop, although I'm not sure that is relevant.

I also have ffdshow codec installed, although it really isn't needed with Windows Media Player 11 installed. Any suggestions will help, I've already tried Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD 9, and I don't have the time to sit and learn the interface. So something somewhat simplistic would be great. Thank You.

Answer:Looking for good DVD Making Software to fit my hardware setup

Try Corel DVD MovieFactory, it's easy to use but makes good DVD's.

You could also try VideoStudio Express which has some more editing capabilities.

They both have trial versions you can download and try out.

I have some weird things going on with my current PC. I think the best place to start would be running a diag tool to check all the components and make sure they are up to par. Been a long time since I've done this and I know that PC Doctor used to be a pretty good tool to do this.

Are there any better freeware tools currently or is PC Doctor still a pretty good one to use?

Answer:Tool to check hardware, PCDoctor any good?
