WRT54G Problems

Question: WRT54G Problems

I have a linksys WRT54G that I use as a Router/WAP. A few days ago I noticed that the router was no longer getting a DHCP lease (I live in a dorm, and yes I checked we are allowed to use Wireless routers as long as we use WEP or MAC Filtering). So I have been using a Static IP setup. Does anyone know why it would do this? I was getting a DHCP lease just fine until a few days ago. Also the wireless stoped working, but I left the router shut off all last night and now it seems to work again.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I'm trying to connect a wrt54g router with 2 pc's to share dsl among computers. I have the
desktop wired to the router running Windows98SE and my notebook has its linksys notebook card running WinXP. On the desktop: Once I connect the modem, to the router, to the desktop I can't get internet. All I get is "Page cannot be displayed". I can however access the router. What information do I need to configure the router with to get internet? For the notebook: I get an excellent signal, and again, no internet. Do I need to obtain a domain name and/or how do I properly configure the notebook card so I don't encounter this? Please help

You updated firmware before setting up router at all ? i

cable plugged into the right port... right no uplink button depressed etc.. plugged in

reset the router first off. follow its reset instructions

plug cable modem directly into 1 computer. try to open a page. make sure the cable modem is sending DHCP and not giving one of those SETUP webpage interfaces. (much cursing when swapping internet providers now saying their modem has a inital setup/recovery interface....... my firewall is openbsd, local terminal only....and hard to get to.. but that was a problem)

step2: (that computer sees the internet, gets ip, can use web
connect a computer to router, (dont bother plugging it into internet yet)

Question: WRT54G Problems

So I went out and bought a wireless router a couple of days ago and from the beginning I've been plagued with random disconnects. The router is a WRT54G Linksys. I've done some searching on the internet and my wireless problems seem to mimick everyone elses very closely.

The wireless randomly disconnects no matter what I try (currently working my way down in MTU (1200) atm. Tried changing to different channels with no luck also.

I should also say, I've got two different computers hooked up to the router. The first is through normal cat5 straight to the router, the other is wireless. They're BOTH having this same problem.

Does anyone know how to fix this or am I pretty much screwed?

*It's using the newest firmware

Answer:WRT54G Problems

could it be your cable/DSL modem? try disconnecting the router and go straight to the modem and see if it stops

Been getting interrupted about every 30 seconds to 2 minutes, my internet doesn't disconnect but i get a huge 5 to 20 second lag spike. I thought it was my service provider at first, connected straight to the modem and everything was fine. So i am assuming the problem is with the router. Installed the latest firmware but the problem still remains. Also my dad has Vonage running through it, but it had been working fine until recently. Any ideas or just a bad router?

I would go buy another router and try it so you'll know if its the router or not.

I currently use a WRT54G v5 router to connect to the internet. It has the DD-WRT v24 firmware on it.

Every now and again, the desktop that is connected (through ethernet, not wireless) loses it's connection and I have to restart my computer. This is extremely aggravating because it disturbs my work.
I have tried connecting straight through to my computer with the modem and the problem goes away. So i have narrowed the problem down to my router.

Using XP's network repair option does not work. The repair stops at "Acquiring network address..."
It seems as if the computer loses its IP address. The "ipconfig" commands in CMD do not work either.

please help.

I have a win7 pc that has been using a linksys wrt54g router to an ISP cable modem. Has worked for about a year with no problems. Suddenly, my wifi has died. I cant connect through the linksys and I cant see wifi using my iphone.

I tried to connect to the router on ports 1-4 using the ip address but all I get is "local area connection doesn't have a valid ip configuration"

So, do we think think the router has died? I tried to power it off and on and did the reset for 30 sec but still no help.

I also tried to connect straight to the router using my XP laptop but nothing...

Any ideas?

Answer:linksys wrt54g problems

I have the exact same router. I'm running 3 systems with Seven, one with XP, one with Vista, 3 iPod touch devices a Nintendo Wii and 2 networked printers. Zero problems. Most are on the WiFi, only my file server is direct-connect.

Sounds a little like the router has just crashed. Doesn't happen very often but it does happen. Try a hard-reset using the recessed reset button on the back. If, after that, you can't even connect to it with a cable directly then yeah ... yer probably looking at a dead unit.

SO I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router ( version 5 I believe) that I am using for wireless acces to my LAN. I had it set up to filter MAC's so that only my 3 PC's that use wireless could get on. Or so I thought. I noticed a rogue PC on my network the other day. Odd , because I only have 3 MAC's allowed to access the WAP. I reset the router to factory default, reconfigured my wireless so that only the 3 known safe MAC's could access and yet still this other PC connects. I finally went in and changed some settings DISALLOWING the MAC of the rogue PC from connecting. and it appears to have worked.

I thought that allowing only 3 known MAC's would be enough though. Networking isnt my strong point so any suggestions?

Also, FWIW ( flamesuit on) I am not using any type of WEP or WPA, because I "thought" by limiting my wireless access thru MAC's I would be safe.

I did check, the rogue PC had its own MAC ( not one of mine spoofed) and as far as I know theres nothing set up as ad-hoc, etc.

Thanks for your input in advance.

I have had this setup for a few months without any issues:ADSL - Airstation G54 --- (wireless) --- WRT54G - ( wired) - Main PC, Xbox360, WiiPlus a laptop using the Airstation wirelessly as well.Recently through, I'm finding that every so often the wireless stops working for internet and local area networking. when i try to repair the connection on the PC, it says "unable to refresh IP address". I find that turning both routers off for 10mins can often do the trick. Whilst the wireless isn't working, I've tried a wired connection to the Airstation and that works fine.Does anyone know what's going wrong here as resetting my routers every so often is getting really annoying! Thanks,Chris

I just moved to a person's basement. He has DSL connected with PPPOE. I set up my router on his connection so I can get the Internet on my computer downstairs.

It seems to work except for the fact that some sites work while others won't. MSN Messenger refuses to connect, microsoft sites in general are slow, there are some other sites that I can't seem to connect to either, like my bank's online banking or my university's email service.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you in advance

I'll try to keep this short. I bought the LinkSys WRT54G Router to network my laptop and the main pc. I set everything up perfectly. The card is working fine, and the router is connected and running, but:
The computer doesn't recognize the router.
I've run the setup software multiple times, but each time I get an error message of

Unable to connect to the Router!
Check that the Router has been connected to the PC,
or reset the Router to factory default settings
by pressing the Router's Reset button for 10 seconds.

I've done all of those, but still no results.
What should I do?

I've been using linksys router wrt54g for a while.. until recently it looks like att bought bellsouth or something and changed the internet in some fashion. Now to log on to the internet I have to type in [email protected] and password (ppoe). But the worst part is the router stopped working.

If I connect directly from my computer to the jack it works (using the login mentioned above) but if I use the router to do PPOE or even DHCP (or any of the other ways) it doesn't work.

I've gone through the whole router configuration and tried changing things that I thought might work but nothing has. Also tried flush dns and ip renew and release.

My next step is to buy a new router but I thought I would make one last chance to relove this problem here.

First problem is that of my friend. He got one around half a year after I got one. First one he got didn't connect to the cable modem well. Second one could not open the admin thingie. I couldn't open it on my computer either when I went to his place, so it was definitely a hardware issue on the router. Third one has a strange problem.

It authenticates fine. 2 computers connected to the router. Connects to the cable modem fine. However, while connected to a computer, once in a while. Approx every 5-10 minutes, it would disconnect and reconnect from the internet. Bad for gaming and downloading files, etc. Bad for everything. He isn't on PPPoE. He has a DHCP type config. Also, his upload/download speeds are capped way lower than they really are. His connection is a bit over 1 Mbps at peak(so far we've seen), but when connected to the router, he doesn't download or upload much faster than as if he were on a 128kbps modem. Any ideas?

As to my problem, I got my router a nice year or so ago. It has worked fine. Minus the EasySecurity BS which I hate more than anything Nurgle can create. Except the wireless is really screwed up. I can sit with my laptop computer exactly a foot away from the router antennae and every once in a while at irregular intervals, the connection will be lost and it will reauthenticate again, etc. The adapter I am using is the Pentium M one. Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG. Quite sure it comes with all Pentium-M compute... Read more

Answer:2 problems with the WRT54G router.

What kind of cable modem are you using?

Do the lights go out on the cable modem when you lose your connection?

Try connecting your machine directly to your router with a crossover and see if you are still seeing intermitent drops. Keep in mind you will be open to the internet completely. I would recommend a good firewall(not the windows one) and stay connected only as long as you need to be, the 5 minutes that you usually get kicked off.

Have you tried resetting everything on the linksys to make sure you have clean settings?

Have you tried using a different channel for the wireless?

Do you have any other devices that are using the 2.4Ghz range?

Are you using an encyrption key?(Probabaly won't make a difference)

I recently flashed my wrt54g to the freeman 1.04 firmware (basically the sveasoft talisman firmware) and everything with the flash went fine. Prior to the flash, my whole system was working flawlessly, wired and wireless components were talking to eachother and all had net access. My problem is that the router no longer will retrieve an IP from the ISP - i.e no internet. The internal network seems to be setup correctly, all IP's assigned via DHCP, MAC filtering and WPA in place for security. I tried setting the router as a static IP to the net but that did absolutely nothing, it still would not connect to the ISP. Just for shits and giggles I reflashed the Alchemy firmware and later the offical linksys firmware just to make sure that it wasnt the firmware I was using and there seems to be no difference.

DHCP is set up correctly, even static IP didn't work
Unit is set for gateway mode (but tried router and it did not work)
WPA/MAC Filtering was turned off to ensure that was not the problem

I am pretty stumped. Truth be told, all I wanted was the SSH server and the power increase the firmware allows so that I can sit anyway in my yard and be on the net!

Answer:Problems after WRT54G Flash

have you tried to reset the router to defaults? If you are using comcast, you might need to reset the modem after a FW flash. Have you tried connecting directly to the internet, not using the router?

Aside: please be aware that if you boost the power of the antenna too much, you can permanently damage your router.

Hello fellow Hard Forumites.

I don't normally post to the hard forums, because I don't normally have anything to say. However, I am now stumped with a problem that should be so simple I shouldn't need to post it here.

One of my buds had an ancient D-Link router that didn't want to recieve DHCP updates from his provider (Charter). No problem, I said -- just go grab a new linksys WRT54G turn on remote administration, and I'll set it up.

Well, long story short -- it works fine for about 5 minutes. At the end of the 5 minutes, only web traffic works. He can't play games online (Eve, Battlefield, Counterstrike, whatever), can't use IM, can't do anything but surf the web. And even that seems to work only every other request.

I had my bud take back the router twice, and all of them exhibit the same problem. I've disabled all the firewall settings, changed anything else I can think of, and no matter what it works fine for less than five minutes, and then bam, nothing again.

Please Hard Forum -- you're my only hope!

I've been trying to configure a WRT54G for my parents shoe store, but I can't seem to get it to dish out an IP for their cash-wrap workstation. I've tried releasing/renewing through ipconfig - when I release it it says that is has already been released, when I renew it it says the specified file (network connection?) is missing. I can connect to the DSL through PPPoE perfectly fine without the router, so that rules out a bad NIC. The router works perfectly fine for every other computer in the store. Any ideas of what is going on?

Answer:Problems with WRT54G and DHCP?

A missing file sounds like a PC issue, especially since the other computers all work.

I tried looking into old posts but couldn't find anyone who had this same problem.

I have a WRT54GL ver 1.1 running as our main router and wireless network. I have an older WRT54G ver 6 connected only to provide a few more ethernet ports to use. Recently after a power outage (not sure if this had anything to do with it) it seems that the older router with disabled wireless reset in some sort of way. It is now showing the wireless is enabled (noticed it pop up on the wireless network choices on my phone) and now the ethernet ports do not work. I tried to connecting the old router to my modem to access the settings page but it will not provide a connection (even though the signal is there). The main WRT54GL is still running fine, just having a hard time getting this back to how I had it. Had this setup for about 2 years with no problems until now. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

You will need to connect a wire from a machine to one of the WAN ports on the router. Then log into the router and set it up to disable the wifi and turn off DHCP.

My wireless network is a Linksys WRT54g and 2 computers running WMP54g and 1 with a dell wireless. My computer has a Linksys NIC, and I'm the closest to the router having to only go through 1 wall and about 10 feet of distance. I have no problems on my part. The computer with the Dell is 2 rooms away (approx. 30ft. away) and goes through many more walls and the other Linksys NIC is 3 rooms away (approx. 40 - 50ft. away). They can both download at the rated speed of the ISP and browse pages and what not, but when it comes to gaming, they get terrible packet loss and high pings, 3x the ping of mine sometimes. They even get dropped sometimes. This problem used to not occur when the router was in my room, but I have since moved it to another room adjacent to mine. Firmware and drivers are all up to date, transmitting power is at 100% and I changed the channel to 11 in case the default was interfering with other wireless products in the house (even though this was never a problem before). These solutions did not fix the problem. Could this all be because I simply moved it 1 room over and now it's too far away for them?

Answer:Linksys WRT54g problems

it could easily be becaused you moved it.

have you looked at any of the other firmware, i believe some of them give you increases signal. i think the other firmwares are hyperwrt and alchemy

Well, not sure what to tell you about the web interface. But for telnet the username should be root and the password should be set to whatever you set the administrator password to.

I'll try and be as frank as possible.

Owned one WRT54G it kept dying, internet would not work at after a few days. Example: Setup Router browse the internet share files blah blah. I get home today around 6 internet still works, come back at ten and its completely dead, but....the light still blinks.

I've powered off and on the router and modem when the computer was off. Now here's the weird thing i can still access the router firmware and share files between two computers that are connected to the router so i'm sure its not a heat issue. There is just no way to browse the internet that portion dies, yet still blinks.

I have the SVEASOFT firmware installed and if i check the status all the IP stats are So now what do I do?

I've heard of drop outs before but not complete dropouts on computers that are directly connected to the computer just those on wireless connections.

Nothing seems to help fix it and i'm not sure if its a network setup issue or something. There has to be a way to solve this problem.

For the past year or so I have been experiencing problems with the Linksys WRT54G Router. It has been replaced 3 times so far and every WRT54G Router we get it does the same exact thing.

Currently we have WRT54G v8 with firmware v8.00.6 build 005, Jun. 16, 2008.

The Router after a few days ends up losing the subnet mask. The subnet mask changes to and the only way I can fix it is to unplug the router and plug it back in. One time I logged onto the Router and changed to my subnet mask and it ended up freezing the internet. The only way I could fix that was to unplug the Router and plug it back in. When it does change to, the internet goes slow, but still works.

The only thing I really use the Router for is a firewall. To eliminate any issues I thought it could be, I disabled DHCP on the Router and switched it over to a Windows 2003 Server. I am still having the same problems and I am out of ideas. Anyone have any other ideas?

Would something like this "" fix my problem?

or this one?

Iím new to routing but have a reasonable idea on networking. I have a WRT54G (IP DSL Modem (
The WRT54G is connected to my PC via NIC (IP Subnet Gateway (WRT) DNS set to ISP info)
I get connection, then I donít. I want to use static IPís as I connect to an Xbox as a media centre and I set the shortcuts through the NICís static IP.
I have the moden running DHCP but not the router, if i dont the i cant get a connection.

My DSL supplier is Bulldog.

If I disable then enable the NIC then the web works again, the xbox can connect to the net when this problem occurs which leads me to believe it's a IP conflict/problem with the NIC.

I have read that I need to change the IP of the NIC to an internal IP, do i then need to put the IP of the router on the same network level?

I have zonealarm configured how I need, XP Firewall is off, I have Norton systemworks running also.

Any help would be very much appreciated

Ok, I'll begin by saying that I am a networking major and I can't seem to solve this problem. I'll keep this as short as possible.

I have an Arris cable modem that connects to my Linksys WRT54Gv6, which is running a micro flavor of DD-WRT SP2. The Linksys router handles the wired/patched connections throughout the apartment and also transmits the wifi. I came back from this weekend and my roommate told me that our internet was messed up. I had a look and changed some things around to get it working again but the Linksys seems to be having trouble getting an IP address from the cable modem. If I reset both and wait a few minutes it might finally get a WAN IP then I can do whatever online until it suddenly stops working. I went to bed last night with it working just fine and now I can't even get my Linksys to retrieve an IP from the cable modem. The Linksys will give me and the rest of the computers IP's via wired or wireless no problem it just isn't communicating with the modem correctly.

I need suggestions.

Reset the wrt54g, holding the reset button. another long story was basically trying to get a PSP to connect wirelessly....tried to set it up entered wep etc etc but PSP would not connect to the router.

Finally P#$$#d off did the reset.

Now I cant connect to the net Using the Ethernet cable !!!! So can't Enable WEP. And most irritating is of course having to dial up using PPPoE(I think thats what it's called). Earlier it would connect as soon as the modem booted???? Thank god I had saved the dialer along with user name and password.

I can ONLY connect to the net on my lappy wirelessly after using the dialer!!!!! Is'nt this strange as I would have thought people normally had Problems connecting wirelessly and not when wired up!!!

What should be done to fix this stink :cry TIA

I?m having major problems with my router. We have a linksys WRT54GS, with a desktop connected to it via cable and my laptop running on wireless. Things were ok until a few weeks ago, when my connection started dropping more often (but it would immediately connect by itself a few seconds later). But now, I can?t even connect to the internet. Here?s the detail:
At first, I couldn?t even connect to the router, although my laptop would pick up the signal. The router is set to have a network key (WPA or WPA II), so I played around with the connection properties and changed the network authentication to OPEN from SHARED and left data encryption to WEP. Now this time I can connect to the router, access the router?s setting and access the other computer, but can?t browse the net. Just for ease, I?ve disabled the router?s security mode now.
I?m running Windows XP Security Update 2, and I have a Intel Wireless Network card 802.11 b/g.
Did I mention HOW ANNOYING this is? I also had another linksys, the WRT54G, and that thing died on me too a while ago.
And yes, I have the latest firmware.

Sounds to me like an internet IP problem. Try unplugging the Modem from power for about 1 min then plug it back in. If that doesn't work try unplugging both the Router and the Modem for 1 min then plug in the Modem THEN the router. See if that refreshes the IP Address.

A while ago I updated my Firmware on the router to whatever was most current on the Linksys linksys site, and everything worked fine while connected through the router to my PC. I began to have some lag issues in video games, so I reset my modem and when I went to plug everything back in I could not connect to the internet, so I had to connect directly to my computer from the modem, which is how I am able to get on the internet now.

Well, now that I have a laptop laptop , I want to be able to get online with it all over the house or use it to multi-task. I just tried to update the firmware and reconnected the ethernet cable from the router to my PC and the ethernet cable from the modem to the back of the router and even after the firmware update I still cannot connect to the internet, or get wireless on my laptop.

Anyone had this problem and/or know how to fix it?

Answer:Problems with Linksys WRT54G v2.2 Router

What's the exact make/model of the modem?

Try this procedure to get the router connected?
Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.

First senario,
I setup the Linksys WRT54G and installed the Wireless-G PCI Adapter on a WinXP Pro with SP1. I used a WEP key and connected, everything went smooth. Internet and everything was working.

Second Senario,
Recently formatted, I now have WinXP Pro SP2. I have the same router settings and I go to install the Wireless-G PCI Adapter drivers/wifi util. Everything installs fine, wifi nic is recognized etc. I disable windows from controlling the wifi connections so I can use linksys's util (as I did in senario 1). This time it connects to the access point but says. "Connected to access point but no internet connection". So I can see the router, I have a DHCP address X.X.X.101 . But it wont connect to the interenet. So I tried upgrading the firmware on the router (to 2.04.4), didnt help. Same error. Looked for updated wifi nic driver (there are none, stock ones are the latest). I tried diabling WinXP's built in firewall, still doesnt get internet. I don't understand what is wrong. I can see the router but the router doesnt have an internet connection? The icing on the cake is there is a computer "wired" into the router via cat5 and it can access the net just fine. So the router see's the cable modem. I have search google and seen other people with the same issue but no resolutions were posted. I think it has to do something with XP SP2 but I dunno.

Have any idea?

I bought two of these and flashed them to the latest DD-WRT mega bios. I have both of them set up as bridges. One is hooked up to my Xbox 360 and connects and stays connected to my wireless signal flawlessly ("local and internet"). The other is hooked up to my main desktop and it will connect to the wireless signal, but will soon drop the internet connection while remaining connected to the local network. I have swapped the routers back and fourth (resetting in between and not) and the 360 always connects perfectly and the desktop always drops the internet connection. Any suggestions?

Hey guys I was having extreme problems with firewalls and antivirus programs conflicting and sending my browsing experience to the lowest its ever been. I decided to dig out my router and use that. I think the firewall program did some blocking and it has stayed in the registry or maybe ive set up my router wrong. I went to the linksys router setup and opened the ports i want to stay open for gaming and stuff but they don't seem to wanna stay open. I will open the port and do a port check to see if anything is coming through that port and it looks good for about 10sec after I open it. If i refresh or try it later it showing as blocked. I have no idea what i am doing wrong. As far as i know i have it all set up right. I have reset the router a dozen times now and still same problem. Linksys has opened up the port buy something is blocking it elsewhere i think.
I did cmd/ipconfig and am using the right IP address. on the linksys setup IP page everything is checked under applications and gaming that is to be checked. Could it have something to do with passwords maybe? When i log in put in password and enter the info just now and hit save changes it opened up for a quick second then shut down.

Before router I was using COMODO pro and AVG pro recent versions
those 2 programs seem to work for a week or so but then they shut me right out from internet explorer/firefox. I could only browse in safe mode. I got rid of both those programs after just buying them

My network is slow whenever I have even a small number of connections being made. For example, even 50 connections from uTorrent slows my network enough to make web browsing unbearable. It is not a problem of bandwidth. My data is only downloading close to 50kb/s. This is with a Netgear wireless router.

I was considering buying a Linksys WRT54-G router with DD-WRT installed. I know this has quality-of-service rules and is a little beefier overall...however, will it solve my problems? Can I always reserve a few connections for each machine on port 80 for web browsing?

Answer:Will a WRT54G and QoS rules fix my torrent and slowness problems?

If you get an older version it might, I heard the new version sucks (Memory can't handle QoS well).

I just got done doing some research and it seems to be the Buffalo WHR-HP-G54 was a better buy, unless you want to add antennas but then you would should be looking at the Linksys 54GS, I believe it is the new version more similar to the old 54G.

But I hear the Dlink 655 is one the best for QoS right now with updated firmware, but it does not run DD-WRT. It is Pre-N too.

And they will be releasing a new version of the 655 ( 855? ) soon. Now your up to date as of my research yesterday yesterday...

I'm just going to go with 2 WHR-HP-G54's (one to use as a bridge) they should be good enough for my purpose and customizable. A bit harder to flash, though, hopefully I will get mine tomarrow since I'm only miles away from newegg anyways (They had a good deal on the router).

I had my cable company reset my modem tonight at their location (whatever they do there) and my utorrent jumped from 50kbps to 350kbs! it didn't do a damn thing when I reset the modem itself. It was a frustrating phone call since the tech didn't know much, telling me that my ping had jumped from 200ms to 300ms and 300 is faster (WTF) lol. They didn't really believe me when I tried to explain why this was not a good thing! But once they reset the router everything looks good. A friend of mine has a Windows 2000 laptop from work with a Dell WAN 1350 wireless card. His wife and daughter use a HP PC to access the internet. I set up the WRT54G router like it says. I plugged the cable modem (a WebStar by Scientific-Atlanta i believe) into the router and plugged the LAN cable from the router to the HP PC. Doesn't work. I setup via the and nothing worked. The PC was connecting to the router but the router wasn't connecting to the internet. The wireless doesn't work at all. The Dell WAN card isn't working at all. It isn't picking up any signal from any wireless connection. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Answer:Linksys WRT54G + Dell WAN 1350 Card + Wired HP PC... Problems!!!

With the information given, my only idea is that you didn't properly set up the router.

Did you connect the modem to the router's WAN port?

Does the cable company expect a specific MAC address to be connected to the modem? If so, did you successfully clone the HP PC's MAC address?

Have you checked all the router's WAN settings?

After configuring the router did you then power off everything, and then power up the modem, router and HP PC in that order?

And for the second problem, the wireless network, we're gonna need some info there too, before we can give you any specific advice. What's the SSID? DHCP Server enabled? etc. Don't turn on encryption until you've got the wireless network working.

This is my first post on these forums, though i have read a few useful resolutions for some of my previous problems.

Anyway, here's what i have on my plate. Currently i have a network that communicates with the internet via an ISA 2006 Server. Everything from Mail Transfer to Client Internet Browsing is routed through this machine. Before i go any further i must let it be known that i do not administer this network internally, as it is used by one of my clients. I administer this network as well as many others with varying configurations from my own office (configured similarly, just on a larger scale). The network in question also has a linksys WRT54G router running DD-WRT that i had originally put on site to make original configuration and Telus OCA registration more convenient. Now i am trying to set this little router up as a secondary way of opening a remote desktop connection to a machine on the internal network in the event that there is a hardware failure or instability on the isa server.

From the experimenting that i have already done using identical routers on my own network i have come to the following conclusion - The internal computer will only respond to the request if it comes in on the router that is configured as that computers gateway. The problem is that i still want all traffic to be routed across the ISA Firewall until i open a terminal session to the internal machines and change these settings MANUALLY. Also, i have configured the router(s) to for... Read more

Question: WRT54G + WRT54G

Hi all...i have a question for you.
I have a WRT54G vrs 1.1 functioning as my main wireless router...however, I have a big house, and cannot get coverage in all parts of my house. Now, i have an extra WRT54G from linksys that i just picked up, which i believe is the newest revision of the router (havent looked at it yet)....and i was wondering if and how i could run cat5 to it from my main router so as to spread out a wireless signal..ect...and what changes in the settings i will have to make...ect. Currently there are 3 computers wired to the main 54G router.....and 3 computers/devices that take the wireless end of things.
Any help would be great
Also, i have just recently noticed using a 3rd party firmware and upping the power to the much extended coverage will i get outta this if i go this route?

Answer:WRT54G + WRT54G

Yes, it will work, but dont plug the incoming CAT5 into the WAN port. Just pick any of ports 1-4 to use. Keep in mind that you will also need to copy over your WEP/WPA settings, as well as any MAC addresses that you've explicitly listed.

I have not ran into that particular issue. have you posted on the dd-wrt forums? some of their wiki pages are out of date so you could be following the pages correctly, but a step is wrong or being left out.

silly question, does the router already have dd-wrt on it? if so you just do a straight flash with the new firmware.

I am so used to enterprise class switches and such that I haven't kept up to date on the home front. Long story short - I currently have a DI-624 in place, but it is starting to have some challenges. I have a WRT54G v2 that I am putting dd-wrt on it. So the question is will this Linksys out perform my ole Dlink? or leave the 624 in place? I know that there a love/hate with both models, I am looking for actual experienced answers.

Thanks all

Answer:Di-624 vs WRT54G w/dd-wrt

I only own a WRT54g with DD-WRT on it. I don't think it's the fastest (as in processor speed etc.) switch there is, but it has quite a few features, which is important for me. I cannot complain about its 'performance' at this point, though I think its VPN speed is limited, I have not found that limit yet.

Question: Wrt54g V2.0

I'm having some issues with the WRT54g. I'm pretty unfamiliar with this router, just got it the other night. Anyways, I've flashed it and downloaded the updated firmware for it. So the problem . . . I'm able to ping the router and get a response when I am wired to the router, but I can't ping myself or any of the other 2 computers wired to the router in my house. Also, our laptop is picking up the wireless signal from the router, but it is unable to actually connect to the net. Same thing, the computers that are wired to the router are unable to connect to the internet, although it shows us as having an active, strong network connection. So from what I can tell, we are getting a wireless and wired connection, but for whatever reason we can't actually connect to a network or ping each other? The 54G was the top rated wireless router in Portable PC Magazine. Have no comment on the 3rd party firmware as I never use it, but I heare alot of people get some serious kick ass stuff outa using Sveasoft firmware instead of Linksys stuff. Hey, all.

Currently having an issue with my laptop and its wireless.

The set up:

Router: WRT54G
Firmware: DD-WRT
WIFI device: Intel 5300 AGN.

The issue I am having is sudden complete disconnects from my wireless. In addition to such, I am getting massive lag in World Of Warcraft.

More detailed description of disconnects: The internet will browse nice and snappy (bandwidth test of 5MB down and 2MB up), but it may suddenly completely lose its connection and have to get a new address and whatnot.

WoW lag: When I am plugged in via a LAN cord to the ethernet port, I can get 60 FPS. When I am on wireless, 22FPS, and EXTREMELY laggy. Other online games do not suffer the same way.

Any ideas? Do I need a better router?

Answer:Issue with DD-WRT + WRT54G

what does the "connected speed" do? does it bounce around?

what version of the router?
what NIC are you using in your computer?

if the router and NIC are negotiating speeds, then you'll see massive lag and such in games...but things will seem seamless in a web browser.

Edit: Here is a link to a test I did a few years back when I was using an Intel 2200BG network card with a WRT-54g router
network connection was stable until I used it...every time it negotiates, there's major lag.

Question: linksys wrt54g

I have a Linksys WRT54G v2.2 router attached to my PC. I have had it for a few years now and it has worked fine.My PC had a problem about 10 months back and I had to wipe it clean. I re installed every thing but could not fine the router disk so I went to the LINKSYS website and down loaded the router driver. set up was fine and it gave me WPA password. My pc crashed a few weeks back and the router would not work. I used the same router driver to reinstall it, however this time it did not give me a security WPA password. My internet worked slow in the evenigs, so I checked the wireless connection on a laptop that was connected via wifi and it showed my Linksys connection as unsecure. the internet was slow when other users in the house were not using it, I knew it was hacked by neighbours as there was no password on my wifi set up.My questions are:Why would the router setup do this (no wpa password) and is there a work around?I tried airsnare to track other illegal users, but it made no sence to me, is there any better free software?Does any one know why once the linksys router is setup I can not find its settings, or am I looking in the wrong place, ie, nothing in the program folder, no short cut on desk top or in program list. Question: linksys wrt54g

My dad is restricting my internet use and I would like to know if there is a way to go in the router and change the settings. The username and password is not the default. I have already tried hitting the reset button on the back of the router, and that worked but he caught on and said dont do that. If there isnt a way into the router without knowing the login is there a way to connect to the internet through the cable modem?Or maybe is there a program that overides the restrictions. I just gotta know the login and i know what to do from there.Just give me anyway to connect to the internet. Thanks.

Answer:linksys wrt54g

If it is your dad that is paying the bill then it's up to him.If my son tried that sort of thing after being told that he was being restricted I would disconect him altogether for a while!!!!!!!

Question: wrt54g range

I plan on purchasing two wrt54g's and flashing them with different firmware to increase the power levels for longer range. If i was to bridge two with some generic omni's off of ebay, what type of range should i expect? For the most part it would be line of site, with a few obstacles. Unidirectional antennas are not an option.

Hmmm... I doubt you can double their THEORETICAL values... which are 300ft outdoors and 100 feet indoors. So, maybe 450 feet? It's just a guess.........

Question: WAP54G vs WRT54G

What's the difference?

I'm finally going from my 56k to 2 other desktops, and 1 laptop home network.

I'm confused as to what the difference between Access Points and Routers are, and how you could have one without the other.

The laptop is going to be wireless, and we're still unsure about the 2 other desktops, wired or not. It would probably be better if we ran 2 ethernet cables from those 2 desktops to router in my room. We could get a pci card with the antenna or a usb adapter one I guess.

Either way, I doubt most of us will be using it, but I'd like to have them all be able to share files. This would be a access point right?

Anywho, it's between the Linksys WAP54g or the WRT54g if I can figure out what the $10 differene is for.

Answer:WAP54G vs WRT54G

The WAP54G is just an access point while the WRT54G is a router with a built in access point and switch.

That router part is what "splits" the internet between all your computers simultaneously, so you definately need it.

Question: linksys WRT54G

I am seeking a little help / opinion on the following issue....

Current network config... ISP is Mediacom cable, feeding a Motorola modem, followed by a symantec 100 hardware firewall appliance doing NAT. Then I have a linksys WRT54G ver 2 wireless router, nominally running WPA encrypted G mode to a linksys card in a laptop. Both the firewall and router have current firmware upgrades.

Downlink speed is ~2.5 Mbit/sec when my laptop is directly wired to the firewall via a 100 Mbit/sec eithernet connection. Downlink speed is ~1 - 1.5 Mbit/sec when directly wired to a port on the linksys router. Similarly I am seeing ~1 - 1.5 Mbit/sec via the encrypted wireless link. .... Hope that all makes sense!

Now the question .... does the WRT54G inherently exhibit slow throughput (way less than the marketing guys ratings), or is there a way to configure the unit such that I can get ~2.5 Mbit/sec on the output side of the router? At present my network is stable (no dropped connections) and usable. But ... I want to tweek things, if possible, to access the full bandwidth. Any suggestions on where to explore, and/or is there another wireless router on the market that is more robust.

TIA for any help... Jim

Answer:linksys WRT54G

the symantec appliance/router both nat.

how robust you think you need.
bite the bullet and get a t-3 line, you'll showup everybody you email.

are you really downloading at the values you mention or going to test sites/your own isp, there's a difference.

the fact that you have a 54g router doesn't mean you'll dl that fast.
it depends on your isp/plan if they have basic thru warp drive connection speeds and many will have you pay a premium for the faster connection.

some isp's limit dl to 1.5mb/s and ul 128-768kb. does yours?

I'm configuring a WLAN for a friend of mine. His house is quite big.
So i thought i would use 1 Router and 1 WAP to help spread the signal.

Problem is, i couldnt get a WAP.
So, i got one WRT54G and one WRT54GS (both are routers).

I want these two guys to act as one.
How do i do that?

Answer:Does the WRT54G/S run in AP mode?

You need to setup WDS on the both of them. I don't believe the stock firmware offers WDS however. You need to put some aftermarket firmware on those routers that supports WDS fortunately you happen to have two models that have piles of hacked firmware available (I know I have one ) Check out it has plenty of good info and links to the different firmware you can get for them (Most of it is free btw).

Question: WRT54G Firmware

Hey guys.
After some thinking on the matter, I've come to the decision that I'll at least TRY to keep my wrt54g and get it working. However, I've heard a bunch of talk about using aftermarket firmware. I was wondering what one you guys would recommend. I've seen stuff about both Sveasoft firmwares, as well as several others. I'm in the dark as to what to go with.

Any advice?

Answer:WRT54G Firmware

Sveasoft - if you want a lot of features and a fruity GUI
OpenWRT - if you want even more feature but a command line interface (unix users tend to like this one)
HyperWRT - if you only want increased TX power over the stock firmware
DD-WRT - if you like the Sveasoft firmware but think the guy that runs the company is an ass (he is)

Also, if you have a version 4 unit, you're pretty much stuck with openwrt.

Ok, so I went with PFSense as my poor stock wrt54g v5 couldnt handle my households demand. I want to still use the 54g as a wireless access point and a switch. I understand disabling DHCP etc, but wanted to know what was the more correct IP to set the 54g at, or ??? Networking is my weak point. FWIW the PFSense box will be set to obviously, and I am pretty sure the modem is set to

Question: WRT54G firmware

I am thinking of changing the firmware of my Linksys WRT54G router to the open source application of Tomato.

Has anyone done this?

Based on post at, the hack is supposed to give your router more features and allow you to tweak the router's settings.

Any thoughts?

Answer:WRT54G firmware

There are a number of 3rd party firmware packages for many Linksys models, one of the more popular ones is DD-WRT. I've heard good things about that one, I suspect Tomato is probably a similar thing, though I haven't looked into that particular package.

I've been using my WRT54G for at least 4 years if I'm not mistaken. I've never had any issues with it at home. I use it to connect my iPad, iPhone, MacBook, and XBOX 360 (wired). My question is should I just leave it as is or will I see any performance gain on upgrading my wireless home router? I eventually would like to get 6-10 IP wired cameras for home CCTV system.

Just curious if there's bigger / badder / better hardware out there...

Thanks for any advice.

Answer:Upgra54de My WRT54G?

Move to a machine running something like pfSense, and then use the wrt54g for wifi only, or upgrade to something better for ap duty. I use a pair of D-Link DAP-2553 for wifi (one for 2.4 and one for 5Ghz), and a little box running pfSense for router duty. It works very well.

However, I'd like to know your opinions on which you like better? I read that the Linksys was based off linux so there was more 3rd party firmware, but I also hear that netgears was good as well.

What are your opinions?

Hi all,

I recently picked up a Linksys WRT54G for a great price ($45 after rebate). My current network is 2 desktops wired and 1 ibook wireless.

My desktop machine is used only for gaming, and the second is my girlfriends machine. I want to set up the router to prioritize gaming traffic at the highest priority, and web surfing / downloading at a lower priority to gaming.

What is the easiest way to do this?

Ive read that multiplayer games like BF2, HL2 use Ping/ICMP packets.

thanks so much,

Answer:Gaming QOS on WRT54G

Probably the easiest is to do it via port ethernet number, MAC address or if your feeling brave, via the port number itself.

Heres an example

Question: linksys WRT54G

Hi guys,

mabye you can help, i am having trouble configuring my broadband router, i would like to configure it like this
USB ADSL MODEM--PC--ICS--INTERNET PORT (back of router) --WLAN--WORK PC. I have a netgear wireless g USB WLAN adapter on the laptop which works fine.

The laptop (with adapter) can connect to the router with a 100% signal, BUT i cannot get the internet to work, any ideas? usually with ICS/LAN it just works....everything is connected properly. I can ping it and even go to the setting page

the router is a linksys WRT54G and has the following ports on the back ( DC in, 1,2,3,4, INTERNET) the INTERNET is where the ehternet cable coming from the PC is connected.

i know the ICS works as i can connect the laptop directly to it with no hassles and xbox live works

i have windows xp and all the necessary specs to run the lot.

Question: WRT54G is great :D

i just bought the WRT54G router and this thing works great! very easy to install. i setup a network between 2 computers and transfered a 185MB file and it took less than 1 minute. the signal is always on excellent and the laptop(which is the wireless client) is about 50 feet from the router. the signal has to travel through a bathroom and 3 walls and the signal never goes below 30Mbps when i transfered that file. i have a 2.4Ghz phone and i made a few phone calls and the signal never dropped once. right now im updating steam on the laptop and im gonna test out a few games over the wireless. so far so good!

Just got this router and installed the DD-WRT firmware (which could be the problem,) well for the past few days the thing has just died on me. For example, i come home from work and i can't get on the internet nor can anyone else, I have to restart the router, cable modem, and computer to get it back. I can still connect to other computers that are hard-lined to the router to transfer files, but 0 internet and the green light for it is on too. Now could it be the firmware or something else?

Answer:WRT54G keeps dying.

Check the temperature of the box. Make sure it is not having thermal problems.

I am in a pickle of sorts. My friend wants to buy a wireless router, and I have been considering a new one. She just needs a basic wireless router, and I would like a faster, more capable one.

I currently have a Linksys WRT54G, and have been happy with it, but would like more speed for transfers. I currently have two laptops, a desktop, a wii, and two wireless network printers. I will soon be adding a WHS, and an HTPC. I would upgrade, but am worried that the 'N' isn't quite settled/early adoption, etc.

Should I sell her my WRT54G (for $25), and buy the WNDR3700? Or should I keep the Linksys, and just have her buy a cheap new router?

Answer:WRT54G to WNDR3700?

That's kinda a no-brainer, sell her yours for a low price and get that WNDR3700 for your internetz

I'm quite content with the features of the stock firmware that the WRT54G v2 has but theres one thing in particular I was wondering if an open source firmware could provide. I'm wondering if there is a firmware out there that boosts the power to the antenna. my router is upstairs and downstairs the signal is spotty at best. I'm considering buying an external antenna but I was thinking that just boosting the power maybe enough. Does anyone have any knowledge on WRT54G firmwares? Any help would be much appreciated.

is there a way to boost wrt54g radius ? im a noob in networking and i was just wondering if i could do this easily or not

Answer:wrt54g boost

With some of the replacement firmware available (the ones that void your warranty) you are supposed to be able to adjust the output strength. I have not messed with them enough to be able to recommend one though. There are some forums at LinksysInfo that may offer more info though.

A non-warranty voiding way would be to look at replacement antenas and wireless repeaters.

I have a Linksys WRT54G for about 3 years now and am now being told the lates versions do not come with a Linux based firmware.

how so well let me explain so i found this on amazon and ordered it
its a wrt160n v3 ddwrt compatible =)

NOW look at what i found if you have a donor router to hack off the external antenna connectors do it but in my case i needed to buy

so to recap for $50 i have a linksys 802.11 N ddwrt router with external antennas this kicks the pants off the the craptastic 160nl that does not use broadcom chips

Answer:Wrt160n its better than the wrt54g!

I'm running a wrt150n which is the prior model to that, but has external antennas stock, flashed with DD, running in access point mode off of my PFSense router. Kicks the crap out of the various wrt54gl models I ran...when it comes to range and speed.

Can you ping any computers behind the router? Make sure the subnet of the local machine you are connecting from does not overlap with the subnet of the IP assigned through the VPN tunnel.
