Preferred Solution: Help me open ports on router!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Help me open ports on router!

Uh, I don't mean to sound cranky here, but RTFM?
I am sure there is an answer in the manual that it came with.

Platform: Westell UltraLine Series3
Model Number: A90-9100EM15-10

I know how to forward ports on this router, but ever since I had to restore my windows to a fresh copy, my router doesn't work right.

Also, I restored my router to default settings after I couldn't get it to forward any ports.

This is pretty much my problem, whenever I forward my port I want open, i check it and get the message "Error: I could not see your service on 71.244.125.180 on port (55655)
Reason: Connection refused"

It's driving me insane. I've forwarded ports before on this router, but it's not working this time.

Answer:My router will not let me open ports.

Make sure you set a static IP on the computer you want
to forward to and use that port for forwarding.
The IP in that error looks like it may be your modem IP.

Answer:Open Router Ports

You mean you want to map some ports in your router to specific machines on your LAN. This should be possible through the router's web-based administration interface.Do you not have docs for the router? Or can you not download them from the manufacturer's website if you don't?

Heya!

So, i've been hosting games for a while but i don't know what happened, after i try to port forward router ports they just won't open :O. Yeh, as i go to
Open Port Check Tool it says ''Error: I could not see your service on 62.**.***.*** on port (*****)
Reason: Connection timed out''

So.... How can i open my ports?? Do i have to call my router provider or something??

Answer:Router ports won't open

It really depends on your specific router model to setup port forwarding, it's hard to tell really. But a few things you could do in advance are checking that your computer as a fixed LAN IP address, and forward the port to that IP and make sure a program is actually listening to that port when you run the check online.
Another way to check it would be to connect two computers to the router, one to a LAN port and another to the WAN port, and check whether or not they can see each other.

Opening a port is a goofy term - - let's start with just using a port.
For a port to exist, some program creates a socket and then uses it to LISTEN for connections. You can see this with (command prompt tool) netstat -oan
Programs which are awaiting connections show up like

Code:
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]135 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]445 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]1030 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]3389 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]4186 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]8019 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]44334 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
TCP 0.0.0.0:[B]44501 [/B]0.0.0.0:0 LISTENING
the nnn are the 'port numbers' created by the program.

Q? Which ports are open? A: only those that exist, eg: port 135 is open, and port 136 is closed (ie doesn't exist).
Regardless of your other setups for the router and firewall, the port is not open unless a program is LIST... Read more

I ran an online security check with Symantic, the results of which said my ports 80 and ICMP Ping were open. Should I be concerned?TIA

Answer:Ports open on router

Nothing to worry about; Port80 is an alternative for http and ICMP Pings are simply the means of checking if a user is still on the site.If you have a good Antivirus program and windows firewall activated and combine these with common sense you will be ok.

Setup seems ok, both PCs connect to web no problem, decided to check how secure ports were via Sygate SOS and results got me worried. On ALL tests (QuickScan, Stealth, Trojan etc) the following ports are open - 80 and 8080.Spoke to ntl Tech Support who did not seem to worried about this just told me to keep my Virus Scanner (AntiVir) up to date, use a firewall, and run AdAware. Do you think i need to be worried about open ports? How do i close them?My firewall is zonealarm (free edition)

i have a blitzz 4 port router, and i cant do file transfers on AIM and stuff like that, and i cant figure out how to manually open the ports necessary to send and get files

Answer:i need to figure out how to manually open ports with my router

Don't know which Blitzz router your using but taking the user manual "MU_BRT200_01.pdf" as a guide, opening the ports is described in the section "Virtual Server" (page 17 onwards).

There is a "Virtual Server" Menu page into which the the configuration details have to be entered.
The Application Port drop-down list on the "Virtual Server " menu may offer up AIM (in the same way as it offers FTP, telnet, etc). If not, then you should be able to add it.
The port type is, I expect, TCP for AIM (but I could be corrected on that as I am not a regular user of AIM).
You need to know the ports AIM uses. Judging by the list on http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n100495.asp AIM requires port 5190.
So you'd select "Single". But it you need a range then select "Range" (again that is AIM-specific info someone else may be able to provide if you don't already know it).
Then enter the port number. Thus "5190 to 5190" in the provided fields if a single port or the range if that is what AIM requires.
Pick the LAN IP address of the PC you want to run AIM on and enter that in "Local Server IP address". So that would be 192.168.1.2 or something of that ilk depending on your LAN set-up.
If all your details are correct press ADD.
That should be it as far as I can see.

I don't know with the Blitzz routers, but with some (many?) SOHO router models it is only possible to port-forward a particul... Read more

Hi I've been having this problem for quite a long time and I've done everything under the sun that I can think of. Right so here's the situation.
For over a year now I've been trying to open ports on my Linksys WRT54GS and it just won't have it. I have a Static Ip, and when I remove the router from the equation I can get access through the port so I know its not my ISP blocking the ports.

I've set up port forwarding on a different router and its worked fine so that pretty much eliminates the possibility that I'm doing something wrong. The only thing I can think of is I have a faulty router, I hope its not the case but I'm at the end of my rope and I want to get this fixed.

I was hosting a server fine off my computer until one day a virus took my computer for a spin to hell. After removing it my ports all seem to be closed. I used a port scanner and it keeps saying 25565 is closed, as well as other ports, but I need 25565 the most right now.

Things my tech did:
Tested if it was my IP by using a router and forwarding the ports on it. - Failed
Changed profiles on computer and hosted - Failed
Uninstalled and shut down all firewalls - Failed
Uninstalled all hamachi and tunngle services - Failed
Disabled any known ideas that he knew that would close the ports - Failed

However we ran the server with the same connection on a laptop and it worked just fine. So it is something to do with my system. This laptop ran the same anti-virus software as well when hosted.

I've ran MS Essentials, Avast, Kerpenski or w/e it's called, Combofix, Spybot S&D, Malware Bytes and some other things that my brother ran but he uninstalled them later.

Completely stumped on this one.

I typically open a single port for torrents, and leave it alone. Upon coming back home from college however, I noticed that my family's network for opening ports is filled with randomly opened ports for ips in the network. I've closed the ports and opened ports for myself, but that is undone after some degree of time with a new set of opened ports. No one else in the family is doing it, and I've since taken security precautions. Previously, the network had no password, but I now changed the router password from default and I've added WPA-2 Personal password. However, the ports keep on opening (and overriding mine). I've asked the people in my family to run virus checks, although I'm not sure all of them have. So, back to the question:Could this be a virus or spyware? I also found this term on wikipedia:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firewall_pinholeCould that be related to my plight?

hi, i have wireless internet access through a motorola canopy wireless router, and i just want to open up port 21, because no1 can connect to my ftp or i cant connect to other ftp's.. i dont know why, ive tried port 21 and other ports as well but nothing seems 2 b working and its extremely fustrating, now i have access to the router config. and the only place i can put ports is something called "user defined port filtering configuration" and it also asks me to put in some decimal value.. well that kinda throws me off so.. huh.. if anyone can help, id really appreciate it...

thanks in advance

Answer:how to open ports on a motorola canopy wireless router

First, FTP is much more complicated than just forwarding port 21. You might want to read up on FTP and firewalls

Second, the exact model of the router would be helpful..

Hi all,

BACKGROUND:
So I have had a moderate NAT while gaming on Xbox Live. From what I understand, opening the ports on my router will better enable my network hardware to communicate with Xbox live servers, changing my NAT to open, and thus allowing me to connect to my best friends party so we can play team doubles on Halo 4!

I recently purchased a new laptop that came with Windows 8. Now, I'm not at all certain the issue is windows 8 related.

So I've been trying to host games with friends in multi-player (minecraft, terraria, risk of rain, borderlands, etc) but they never can seem to join my game. I've tried turning off my firewall and my antivirus. (I wasn't even on the internet, so it wasn't a big risk) We're connecting by ethernet, PC to PC, and I've ensured our IP addresses are in the same subnet.

So here's the kicker: I can join any game, so long as they host it, not me. And i can ping their PCs just fine, but if they try to ping my machine they get a "Destination Host Unreachable".

Anyone have any clue as to what could be blocking my ports from opening?

PS: don't worry about burying me with jargon, I'm a network administrator in training.

Answer:PC Ports wont open to host a game (NO ROUTER) PC to PC LAN ONLY

I assume you are using a Crossover cable and not a standard Ethernet Cable?
Have you assigned a Static IP address for all the computers playing the game? and is it in the same scope as the other computers? (eg) 192.168.2.x ?
Go to each computer and go to Search and type CMD Right click the CMD results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Command Prompt type
ipconfig /all and press enter. Copy the text and paste it into your next post.

Hey all so I have forwarded some ports on my router with Airport Utility (NAT port forwarding), but using cmd netstat -n the ports I forwarded aren't listed and using online port checkers confirms they are closed. I added exceptions to my firewall (even though it is off), and windows defender is off, and Avast's shields are all off. I honestly have no idea how to open the ports up and haven't found a way to do this using Windows 8 (not pro).

Anybody have any ideas? It seems like Windows 8 is blocking these ports from opening for some reason. There doesn't seem to be an override function in cmd to open them, either.

In case you're wondering why I need the ports open, I'm trying to resolve a "request timeout" error when pinging somebody on Hamachi - so I'm trying to open the main ports Hamachi uses (I just want to play Terraria, man).

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Ports closed; router forwarded ports, firewalls disabled?

Temporarily add your PC IP into the DMZ and try again , see if the internal/external tests then notice the ports open , this will test if it's a router or PC issue....

Don't forget to take it out of the DMZ after testing...

Try going to GRC and use Shields Up. See if that shows the ports as open. Also did you open the ports in the Windows Firewall or what ever firewall you have on? It could be getting stopped there.

Question: Router ports

If you open a port / pinhole in a router, you don't need to do that on every PC right?
You just open up the routers address in a browser and open the port you need, right?
I'm going to be using PC Anywhere on a network I made for a company.
The port I need to open is 5631 or 5361, i can't remember.

Anyway, I would just need to do this one time to my knowledge, because you are changing the router, not the PC.
I'm doing this tomorrow and I wanted to know before I jumped in.

I hope it is only one time because the network has 3 servers and 27 workstations.

My router, Hitron CGN3 CGN3 | Hitron Technologies Americas Inc. has two USB 3.0 Ports, I hooked up an external hdd and could not find it on the network. Do I have to attach an actuals NAS server or can I use an external hdd? I do not recall getting any kind of software with the router.

Answer:Router with USB 3.0 Ports

According to the spec sheet, those are only 2.0 ports.

The user manual doesn't shed much line on the matter, other than stating it has 2 ports that can be setup for a SAMBA share: https://s3.amazonaws.com/modem.manua...2013-08-16.pdf

I'd imagine the configuration would be somewhere in the configuration page via the web GUI. Log into the modem/router and poke around in the settings for setting up the network share.

The issue for the net admin is, opening a port for you, implies that no other
user can use that port -- it's all or nothing.

What port number and tcp protocol do you need?
Normally, we open ports so that users outside our organizatin can get access

not on one the company's server?

Question: Router ports?

My son plays RPG's online & I would like to see if there is a way to go from the cable modem to his computer and then feed the router so he could avoid opening ports on the router? Is there a device to use to split the signal from the modem to feed his computer & then the router? Please let me know if this question would be more appropriate for the "gaming" forum. Thanks in advance for any assistance! Chuck

Answer:Router ports?

What you're thinking isn't possible-- you can't split modem outputs, that's why there are routers. What you could do, that would essentially accomplish the same thing (which most would consider unwise) is to hard code his IP address and then put it in the router's DMZ. That would essentially make his entire machine open to the web, as if it were only behind the modem. But then he'd want to use a software firewall and only open the necessary gaming ports.

But consider that it's not really "opening" ports on a router that's being done, it's forwarding traffic through specific ports to specific machines on the LAN. If you hard code his machine's LAN IP address, and configure the router's port forwarding to allow the RPG port traffic to that machine only, your other machines are protected.

I have three computers (win 7on one and two on xp)
My hook up is Modem to a Router. (Linksys 4 port)
It comes out of my router to a 6 port expansion board where is wired to different room?s of my house. Using all 6 ports. Since I only have outlets ports from my router,It feeds 4 ports on my expansion board. Everything works find like it is suppose to.
Now comes my problem, I had my TV system upgraded to HD.(Two new HD receivers) Each one has a Ethernet connection to download movies from the dish network to my HD DVR Receiver. I got one receiver hooked up and working, but I am out of ports on my router as it is only a four port router.
Three computers and one DVR HD Receiver,so I am one port short. What do I do add a Access point or switch? or can a 5 port router.
Anyone has any info on who has them ( makes, model #)
I do not know anything about a switch or access point. I know wireless is not an option (to many cards to buy, installing, locking down,)

Thanks any info you may offer

Answer:How To Get More Ports From My Router

Hi john, this is your lucky day

Personally, I'd get a cheap router and set it up as a switch, you may even be able to get one from your ISP, I don't know about where you are, but here they hand them out like sweets. I just phone them up, tell them my router's fried, and they send me a new one.

To be fair, it can even be a broken router if the Networking functions still work on it, my 2nd router has ADSL connection issues, so I just use it as a switch.

this tutorial will tell you how to set up a 2nd router as a switch: Multi Router Network - Configure

It will show you how to configure a 2nd router as a switch (effectively 4 more Ethernet Ports, and extended Wireless range)

Hi everybody. I remember finding a lot of help here with a related issue a few months ago, so I thought I'd come back... I have 2 computers networked with a Netgear RP614 router. The setup is very simple, both computers are connected to the LAN ports of the router with ethernet cables, then another cable connects the WAN port of the router to a cable modem. Although I don't think it matters, one computer runs Windows 2000 and the other runs Windows XP. The 2000 computer has a local IP 192.168.0.2, the XP one has 192.168.0.3, and the router uses 192.168.0.1.

So anyway, the problem. Internally, "below" the router, any services I have available are accessible from either computer. For example, FTP on the 2000 computer. connecting to 127.0.0.1:21 works (of course)... 192.168.0.2:21 works... but (myinternetip):21 does not work. (I am certain of the addresses.) By accessing http://192.168.0.1 I can check the router settings, and modify the port forwarding settings. I added FTP exactly as it directed (Service Name: FTP. Start Port: 21. End Port: 21. Server IP Address: 192.168.0.2). It STILL doesn't work (everything has been fully restarted many times). It seems as if it is simply ignoring the port forwarding settings. I even set 192.168.0.2 as the "Default DMZ Server" (which should make EVERY port available!) and activated "Respond to ping on Internet WAN Port" with no change. Any ideas?

P.S. Oh, and it works fine if I connect the 2000... Read more

I have had my home network running without any problems for 4 years now. It consists of 2 laptops (XP Home) and 1 desktop PC (Windows ME) all connected to a D-Link DI-713P wireless router. The 2 laptops access the Internet via Wi-Fi and the PC uses one of the LAN ports on the router. Starting earlier this week, the PC is no longer able to access the Internet or the router through a LAN port. As soon as I turn on the PC the LAN activity LED on the router starts flashing constantly and never stops until I turn off the PC. I've changed LAN ports on the router but I get the same results. I plugged a laptop into one of the LAN ports and the correpsonding LED constantly flashes as soon as the laptop's power is turned but I still cannot access the router or the Internet. The laptop shows that a network cable is plugged in but it indicates poor or no connectivity. Wireless access to the router and the Internet has not been affected and rebooting the router hasn't helped either. D-Link no longer provides tech supoort for this router and I've scoured the Intenet for ideas wthout any luck. Has my router gone belly up?

Thanks,
Bill

I went into my router before for simple things like adding WEP keys and all that. but when it comes to ports i'm kinda confused, i have a linksys router and i also have a game that uses these ports: TCP: 18210, 18215, 13505.
UDP: (outgoing) 18215, 20000-22000; (incoming) 3658
also notes "port 1042 needs to be opened instead of 1000"

with forwarding and triggering etc. listed in the router i dont know what i actually need to do to "open" these ports, any help?

Since we don't have awesome internet connection, it really annoys me when guests download something via Wi-Fi. So my question is, Is it possible to block ports only for Wi-Fi users, but leave all ports open for cable users?

I googled but did not find anything related.. hope to get an answer here.

alright, this is my situation,

I have a basic computer software/hardware understanding. I need to boost my connection speed to the internet via methods directly relating to the router. I get around 1-4 mps at this current time which is hardly effective for gaming, which is why i need the boost. I know depending on my location and the amount of people downloading on the same internet plan effects speeds, to improve my connection (because my computer/xboxs are currently wireless). I would like to hard wire them, however my router is about 6m away. So i have two options, i can either keep going with what i'v got or i can hard wire them by buying about 4 ethernet cables that are 6-7m long, one cable for a spare. The problems i am think that could possibly happen is that either over the large distance of the cables the strength will die out or i will eventually need more than 4 cables and my router only has a max of 4. So what my other question was is that would a ethernet switch be more effective seeing as i would only need 1 cable, but i was thinking that an ethernet switch with four cables would completely slow down my connection speed as the data is eventually running on one cable after the switch. Also do you have any other ideas/suggestions on improving connection speeds specifically for gaming (as i said i get 2-4mbs and on American servers get a ping of about 300-1000). Hello,

I have a linksys broadband router. I am connected to a network at work and would like to know if I can configure this router to give myself extra useable network ports here as I only have 1 here. If this is possible how would I go about doing this, any help is appriciated, thanks.

Answer:Using a router for extra ports?

Connect to the router (before connecting it to your network) and turn off DHCP, also tell it to get an IP address automatically. Then reset the router and connect your existing connection to one of the regular ports (NOT the wan or Internet port) That should give you 3 extra ports to use.

I installed a wireless Netgear FM-114P router and am trying to get
Bit Torrent to work properly. I know I have to forward ports 6881-6999.
I go into my router configuration on IE, and select rules.
For inbound traffic I create a new rule allowing any TCP on 6881-6999
but I have to fill in, "Send to LAN server". Is this the ip of the computer hooked up

Thanks.

It's the IP address of the computer on the LAN running the Server application that requires the ports to be forwarded to it.

I need to forward ports 9000 and 2051 for a security system. I have tried two different routers with no success. The first was a Linksys WRT110. I followed the directions. Forwarded the ports to a static IP I put on my laptop. The IP is outside of the DHCP range on the router. I have internet connectivity.

Then I went to http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ and checked the ports. They are still closed. I shut off the firewall on my PC and had the same results.

Then I tried doing the same on a TP-LINK router and had the same results. The ports are closed. I then connected my laptop directly to a DSL modem that is set to bridge mode. Obtained an IP on the laptop and tried to test the ports. They are still closed.

What am I doing wrong? Is there something I need to do on the PC to open the ports other than shut off the firewall? I do not need these to be open on my PC. I am just using it to test the forwarding of the ports for this security system.

Answer:Trying to get ports to forward on router. Need help.

You need to forward these ports to the IP of your dvr not your laptop. Reason why it's showing these ports closed is because you have nothing listening on them on your laptop.

1)i understand that since there is no uplink port on the switch, i need to use a crossover cable to connect switch to router to enable full connectivity, correct?

2)and if so, i'm unclear if it needs to be crossover cable all the way from switch port to router port? or can it just be crossover from router port to wall jack, which is wired to new part of the house via cat5, with the switch plugged into a jack in the new part of the house?

thanks for any who take the time to read this and answer!

A particular network card has 4 ethernet ports.
It also has a uplink/downlink physical switch on the back.

So pop quiz...
What are the benefits, if any, of plugging each port into each port on the back of a single modem/router.

The modem/router also has 4 ethernet ports, an adsl, and wireless lan.

Let's assume the cables are cross-overs.
Let's also assume the switch is in the downlink position.
Let's further assume we all know the quote regarding assumptions.

Hi,

I am trying to configure a specific port to allow remote control on a server using VNC. I did see another thread on this but I didn't really understand it possibly because I am totally unsure what I am doing when configuring ports on my router (a DLink DSL-504) ... I need an idiots guide to port redirection

I have a local web server and I have managed to configure it for WWW (& since then FTP) access. The only firewall working is that offered by the router and that, I assume, is why they have port redirection. I can configure my router (80.177.27.27) to redirect hits to that server on port 80. Configuring HTTP& FTP are easy as it has preset redirections and all I have to do is activate them. I can browse to my server and I can FTP at DOS level to it both from external servers.

However, if we assume my remote control runs at 192.168.0.3 locally, that the routers external address (as far as the internet is concerned) is 80.177.27.27 (which it is) and that this has been tested as working ... i.e. if I point my browser at the external address I get a web page I've built. I'm guessing it's more of a fluke than anything else that I got this to work!

VNC runs on port 5900 (the other thread mentioned 5800 too but I don't appear to need it internally unless it is doing it invisibly) and has been tested internally as running at address 192.168.0.3:5900 but does not run externally on 80.177.27.27:5900 (which is what I would expect). All incoming ports are "blocked" by default. The only time ports are open is when you specifically open them or a client on your network initiates an outbound connection. So there's really nothing you can close.

If so, just unplug him until his addiction stops.... afterall, it is your connection... right? If you guys share the bills, you can not block his ports as he is paying for the service too on the basis of that said access.

Somehow, the other people who are using my network (And seem to have formed the habbit of occasionally powering down the Router and/or removing it) now managed to have added extra ports. Our Router (790RH 4 Port Broadband Router) is only capable of 4 ports. I used to be  XXX. XXX. X.2 and the other computers XXX. XXX. X.3 and XXX. XXX. X.4. However, all of a sudden I am now XXX. XXX. X.7 and the other computer XXX. XXX. X.9 (I have yet to determine what the third computer is numbered, I believe it could be XXX. XXX. X.8, it is rarely powered on.) It is not a problem that bothers me, the router is still able to function as it normally would but I donot understand how this could have occured. They cannot access the settings for they are passworded and I made sure that I am the only person who knows the password.

Answer:Router (Extra) ports

Probably your router supports DHCP and the clients (the computers) recieve their IP-address dynamically. So your router can determine on its own, which IP-address to assign to which client. There are several reasons why your computers suddenly get other addresses, this shouldn't bother you (neither is it a security problem nor a malfunction).

Our flat has a Wanadoo wireless network (2mb), via a Livebox with Inventel software.Had been wondering why it was seemingly so sow recently and tried allsorts to fix it, but recently one flatmate was away for the weekend and oddly the speed was really good, just as it should have been.He gets back and it slows down again - basically because he torrents all sorts of wrestling tv shows non stop and I'm about 90% sure he's hogging all the bandwidth as a result. So was wondering - is it possibly to set up the livebox router to block all the ports that torrent programs use, to effectively stop him using torrents and ruining the broadband for the rest of us?Or is there a way anyone knows of to 'split' the connection, so we each have an allocated portion each (like a third of 2mb each) to prevent one user hogging the bandwidth and making it really slow for everyone else?thanks!

Answer:blocking ports on router question?

ON alot of routers you can log into the router and block service, IPs, port ranges etc, so yes it can be done this way."Oh dear! That a shame about your bandwidth hogging torrenting. I wonder what could have possibly happened!"However if he does all this, I think he would quickly realise what's happened and just log in himself and fix it.

Hi,I want to set up a broadband system that can be shared between 3 holiday cottages. Three of the broadband router's ports will be cabled to the cottages, one port to a wall socket in each cottage. I have a Vigor 2800VG purchased for this project. In order to deter questionable activity I want to tie each cottage to one of the IP addresses in the allocated block. (ie make it traceable to a cottage without logging) I've been told that this is impossible because the router will allocate on a first come first served basis. So if there are 2 laptops in one cottage, connected via a switch or a wireless bridge, the IP address allocation will lock out one of the other cottages. Is there other hardware available or configuration that can sort this problem?Keith.(novice in this area)

Answer:Locking IP addresses to router ports

"I want to set up a broadband system that can be shared between 3 holiday cottages." -- That is very likely to be contrary to your terms and conditions, which will normally specify that you cannot provide your ADSL connection to others outside of your own household, or a similar clause along those lines. And yes, it impossible (as far as I am aware*) to allocate IPs without having control over the clients. They will have to remain dynamic. There should be no problem with using access points, though, so at least that part of your plan will work.*Home/small office equipment.

How would I go about opening up ports with a Linksys router? I know how to get to the configuration page by connecting to my router "192.168.1.1" I want to open up ports for other chat programs like AIM and mIRC, since they are closed ports they constantly lag out whenever I am idle. Where would I begin? Which ports are they? How can I find out which ports they are? Linksys said that I have to find out the ports myself and call them, tell them the ports so that they can open them up for me. My friend has opened his ports with the same exact router but hes a clown and doesn't remember how he did it.

Well, what model do you have? And I'd recommend reading the manual since they have this info on it.

Generally, the port forwarding stuff is located under Port Forwarding under the Advanced tab of the web interface (it is for the two I have).

And I'm assuming you do file transfers in AIM (which would require you to poke a hole), and mIRC as well. I know you can specifically set what ports incoming connections are enabled on for those two programs, but you'll have to poke around as I do not use any of those programs.

Is there a more convenient way to expand the number of wired ports one has on a wired network?

I know that a quick solution is to wire two routers together and disable the DCHP on the second, but would doing something like wiring a 4 or 5 port ethernet hub to the router work as well?

Answer:Adding more ethernet ports to a router

Using a network switch is a pretty standard use to combat this problem. I wouldn't buy a hub though.

My Netgear Wireless Router (Model WPN824v2) has been running fine and until now has had no problems with the ports I'm running on it.
However, I just recently erased my ports in a effort to make them more efficient, and now I'm having some conflict issues.

I have one set of ports set to my X-box 360 system and it has since improved. Now I'm working to get another system running on the router wirelessly. However, this system takes more ports, about 7 as it were. 6 TCP and 1 UDP. The 2 sets of ports are different IP's and I haven't had any problems until I went to make the UDP completely open (1-65534). The other ports are specific, but when I go to make the UDP open is says there is a conflict.

Any fixes?

Is there any way I can make it more clear or are you guys just as confused as me?

Hi, I have a Asus rt-12n modem router and a netgear nighthawk r7000 router. The Asus is only used to connect to the landline and all wireless connection is via the netgear router. Is it possible to limit access on the Asus LAN ports? The only wired connection I allow is the netgear connection as I have opendns running for internet filtration since I have kids in the house.

I know there are methods to bypass the opendns but I result to manual blocking via the netgear router. So far, I am unable to filter content if the connection is wired via the Asus router. The antennas are removed and the password is secure enough that I forgot what it is.

If is possible to disable all the LAN ports except for the one to the netgear, then I would be happy. Is such a thing possible or must I buy another hardware?

Hi,

We have a 4 port router in our office that is connected to the net through a static IP-adress. But 4 ports are not enough.

What is the easiest solutions to be able to add more TP-ports?

Can I for example, simply buy an 8 port switch and connect it to one of the 4 ports on our router, giving us 12 ports with Internet access?

Thanks for reading.

Answer:Adding a TP-ports to a 4 port router?

well youd have to subtract 2 ports for the connection between them.

and youd use a cross over cable but essentially youve got the right concept.

Answer:Is it possible to asign MAC address to router ports?

Not sure if that is possible.

Also why even use the Asus if it is only being hardwired to the Netgear? If your connection speed is over 100 MB from your ISP then you are cutting your LAN speed as the Asus doesn't even have GB ethernet ports.

I'm close to solving my videogaming problems, I'm just uncertain and wary of opening ports on my own. So I ask this:
When I go to gaming and applications in my router menu I see the following in the port forwarding menu:
|Application| |Start to....End|
<insert app here> <insert number><insert number>

|Protocol| IP Address |enable|
<TCP/UDP/Both> <my IP> <a box that just says 0> <checkbox>
For Application I entered COUNTER(for counterstrike) start to end I put 27000 for start and 27015 for end. Protocol is UDP, I am uncertain what to enter in that 0 box by the IP though.

So my question(s) are:
1) Am I doing the right thing in the APP box?
2) Am I doing the right thing in the Start to End boxes?
3) Do I put anything where that 0 is?
4) Am I using the right menu? (other options are DMZ, Port Triggering and uPnP forwarding)

Thanks much!

I have a D-Link DGL-4500 that works just fine for my 4-port Gigabit wired and 1-2 wireless port use. Now need more wired ports and need recommendations on what I need.

Up 'til now, I used the wired ports for My Machine, Wifey's machine, WHS and Media Center. Now I'm adding two more to the (wired) mix - a Print/Scan Server and a Workstation occasional use - and need to extend the 4 ports in the router/access point to service 6+ wired ports.

Gigabit is an absolute requirement (10/100 is just too slow anymore). An unmanaged device is also a requirement (I need it to be as simple as my 16-port NetGear 10/100 FS116 I use for LAN parties). A bonus would be jumbo frame support since 2 of my machines benefit from Jumbo - but not a requirement since I just theroretically keep the 2 machines that Jumbo each other on the 4500.

I'm hoping to do this for under $120, but if it's the right solution, $ isn't a blocker.

Help me out so I can buy what I need and stop unplugging and re-plugging machines as I need them!

I have a linksys BEFW11S4. It only let me open 10 ports though. Is there anyway for it to allow me to open more ports?

Answer:Opening more ports on a linksys router?

Don't know specifically for your router but on mine they have single port forwards, another page for port range forwards, and even another for port triggering (forwards). So if you set it up correctly you could forward a lot of ports. Check to see if your router supports this or has these pages.

Hi, my computer seems to block all ports even though I have no firewall or router. I can do things like IRC and web browsing but I can't receive DCC in IRC or use file share programs. I can send with DCC though.

When I do online port scans all ports seem to be closed/blocked.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I own an Edimax Router, and I work with several applications that require port forwarding. I forwarded the ports I needed and all worked fine for a long time. About a week ago the programs started acting as if the ports were blocked. I checked a number of times and the correct ports were still forwarded yet the programs still acted as if they are blocked.

I changed the ports a number of times to see if my ISP blocked some ports but none worked. I don't believe the problem is in the router since other computers on the home network work fine (with open ports).
The problem is not my internal IP, I checked and it is the correct one. I also do not have any software firewalls that could cause this.

What could be causing this? thanks in advance.

I should also mention that it started at about the time I discovered and deleted a few viruses from my PC so it might have something to do with it.

Im using uTorrent and i got the error saying that my port was closed. I tried opening a port on my Belkin wireless N router. Model number is F5D8233-4v3. I check the port that I tried to open on these two sites but it says that its closed:

I have the firewall turned off and also used the virtual server tool and added an inbound port and a private port with the same port number. No luck though. Any help would be appreciate.

Hi all. Me and my dad have been trying to set up a game of Age of Empires using TCP/IP connection over our home network. However, I am having serious trouble connecting for a game. I have tried opening the required ports on the router, but I can only do so for one IP address. For example, ports 2300-2400 TCP/UDP must be opened, but i can only open them for one or the other of our computers. Is there some way around this? I dont think i can change any of the required ports in the game or something.

I have also tried to put my computer in the DMZ. This didnt seem to change anything: i could still not connect. Since my computer is in the DMZ should i be the one hosting the game or trying to connect?

My router does have to UPnP feature ( and is on) but it still wont allow us to connect. What do i need to do?

Thank you very much.

-Aaron

EDIT: Both comps are wired to router, windows vista

EDIT2: Alternatively, would buying a crossover cable to connect them work? or some other cable?

Dear Tech Support,

Myself and two roommates share a DSL connection. I believe that I have a virus which is basically opening a ton of router ports and rendering the internet unusable for all of us sometimes (moreso at night). If i run netstat, 10-20 ports show to be open. THe virus does not seem to be affecting the internal speed of my computer if I am not on the internet, but things are often paralyzingly slow if I am.

I believe I had this virus on an old computer, and then stupidly used an external harddrive to move files between the two, and think the virus came with it.

Ive copied and attached all scans per the instructions. Unfortunately, i dont have a copy of windows handy.

Thank you so much for your help!
Kelly

i have D-LInk DI-704p ethernet broadband router
i have contacted d-link and have the newest firmware
what i need to do is configure this so me and my son can play games and or host games through this router
right now we disconnect the router because people cannot join our hosted games is there a link to the ports that need to be open for particular games or do i need to configure the router more by assigning ip addresses and such.
with the router as it is now both puters can access the internet just cant host games
also does this router stop files from downloading as i get to 99% and it starts to transfer from temp location to final save spot and it stops
thnx in advance for any response

Answer:router-opening ports for gaming

Most multiplayer games will have the ports that need to be open on their support site.

Also, on Linksys we have a setting called DMZ which forwards all ports to a certain machine. I host games and use this setting during that time and it works great.

Question: Open ports

Hello there: I have two questions relating to computer security for home PC's. 1. How do i get a listing  of listening/open ports on my computer use the command prompt? And, can you recommend a good reputable port scanning program. 2. How do i edit the hosts files that are left behind from deleted programs or visited websites? Thank youEdit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

Answer:Open ports

You can use netstat (how to use netstat), a command-line tool that displays incoming and outgoing network connections, from a command prompt to obtain Local/Foreign Addresses, PID and listening state.netstat /? lists all available parameters that can be used.netstat -a lists all active TCP connections and the TCP and UDP ports on which the computer is listening.netstat -b lists all active TCP connections, Foreign Address, State and process ID (PID) for each connection.netstat -n lists active TCP connections. Addresses and port numbers are expressed numerically; no attempt is made to determine names.netstat -o lists active TCP connections and includes the process ID (PID) for each connection. You can find the application based on the PID on the Processes tab in Windows Task Manager. This parameter can be combined with parameters -a, -n, and -p as shown below:netstat -annetstat -ano-- If the port in question is listed as "Listening" there is a possibility that it is in use by a Trojan server but your firewall, if properly configured, should have blocked any attempt to access it. A "listening" state is when a program on a computer listens and waits on an open port to accept (establish) a connection with a remote computer on another port. See what is the Difference between Established/Listening Ports?.

Question: No open ports

Hi, i'm trying to run an internet service on my computer. I'm looking for a port to choose, but when I go to a port checker tool online It says that I don't have any ports open. I've added the program that I want to use to my list of firewall exceptions and forwarded my port in the my router settings. I'm pretty new at all this stuff, so I don't really know what else to do. Why don't I have any open ports?

I'd like to add that I've checked my ports with several different online programs and I've tried several different ports.

Answer:No open ports

What program are you using to accept data through the port?
What port are you trying to forward?

Good morning - I ran Steve Gibson's programme "Shields Up" and found that PORT 128(135/EPMAP DCE ENDPOINT ) was open. Then my technical expertise ran out !! Is this important and if so, how do I close it? I run Zone Alarm pro. and have Windows XP Pro. Can someone educate me please - Thank you - Ian

Answer:Open ports - help please

It could be you've got an application that has opened the port for some reason in the past and you may have clicked yes.The only thing I can suggest is to open Zone Alarm and start blocking applications from accessing the Internet, apart from your browser of course, and go back to Shields Up after each one's blocked and see if you can track the culprit. Pay particular attention to AVG antivirus if you use it, something at the back of my mind seems to think that maybe the guilty party, but don't quote me on that, I think its something I've read somewhere about 135/EPMAP DCE ENDPOINT.Sorry I'm not sure how to close ports in ZA because I haven't used it for years.Paul.

Question: Open Ports

I found a site called "Stealth" about a year ago and occasionally run through the Internet security tests they provide. I've always come through with flying colors. I went there last night and discover I now have four ports that are not in stealth mode. They are shown as open. Previously all ports were stealth. The open ports are 21, 22, 23 and 80. The information given says it is crucial to take care of port 23. I have no idea what to do or how to do it. I've been to Microsoft and went to their knowledge base but I'm not a technician and didn't fully understand anything I read. If there is someone out there who can help me I would sure appreciate it. I'm worried about this as I do a lot of shopping and bill paying online.

Information:
Dell Dimension 4600
Windows XP SP2
I.E. 7
AVG Anti-virus w/firewall
SpySweeper
a2 Squared
Win Patrol
80 GB hard drive
2GB RAM

Thank you,
Nikilet

Answer:Open Ports

I haven't used AVG with Firewall but I'd check in the help for it and see if you can find information about putting these ports back into stealth mode. Also, there is a forum for AVG users which if you registered, you'll be able to use and at least one person there probably knows their way around ports forwards and backwards!

I found a site which listed these common ports:
FTP 21 - File Transfer Protocol (another way of downloading and uploading files)
SSH 22 - Secure Shell (secure connection to other computers - I use it at uni to access the main computer directly and also when I "ring in" from home)
Telnet 23 - connecting to another machine (and person?) via the phone lines (if I remember correctly)
SMTP 25 - email
Web 80 - internet browsing
Pop 3 110 - email
IMAP 143 - not sure
Other Applications
Remote Desktop 3389 - access your computer from somewhere else via internet
PC Anywhere 5631 - as Remote Desktop

Goto http://www.zonelabs.com and download and install the Free version of ZoneAlarm - it will stealth all of your ports. Then try the scan tests at
http://scan.sygate.com - they will verify that all of your ports are stealthed.
You can also try the Shields UP! web site to test your ports plus learn how to turn off NetBIOS protocol, file sharing at: https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2

Open or Closed ports tell a port scanner that there is a computer at that IP address - so, yes you should be concerned.

A Blocked (or stealthed) port will not reveal any information from your computer to the port scanner - i.e. there is no verification that a computer exists at your assigned IP address.
