Import thunderbird emails to Gmail

Question: Import thunderbird emails to Gmail

I have been trying to follow this guide to get my local emails uploaded onto Gmail:

http://www.zoliblog.com/2007/10/24/simplified-guide-to-importing-all-your-archive-email-into-gmail/

Unfortunately it seems that this guide is for Outlook users, and I use thunderbird. Does anybody know of a way to import local emails from Thunderbird to Gmail?

I've heard of the "Gmail Loader" program, but AFAIK this program will strip the emails of their original send dates. What I'd really like is for a solution where all my local messages can be sent and stored on Gmail, with the original sender information retained, and the original send dates retained. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Import thunderbird emails to Gmail

Here are the instructions from gmail to enable IMAP in thunderbird -> http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=77662

Just attach to GMAIL via IMAP and the drag and drop you saved local email to GMAIL through thunderbird.

Make sure you enable IMAP in your GMAIL settings under Settings -> Forwarding and POP/IMAP.

I'm transitioning away from using Gmail as my primary account, and have t set to forward everything to my outlook.com account. But is there a way I can bring my archived emails over so I don't hav to go to gmail to look for them? thanks.

Answer:Can I import my old gmail emails to outlook.com?

If you move everything to the inbox, and choose to retrieve all in the pop settings it will retrieve all of it. Then setup your outlook like you want it
Edit.

I was just thinking, use windows live mail, set up IMAP and add your gmail account. Then you can move all the email to your live email, and it will show in outlook.com too

I've not tried but I would of thought it would just be as easy as set your gmail up as imap in your outlook client and then just move the emails over between the folders.

I've set up my Gmail account for reading emails via IMAP and sending emails all with Mozilla's Thunderbird. I followed Google's directions on how to setup the client to work with Thunderbird. It reads the emails correctly but when I send emails I get:
"An error occured while sending mail. The mail server responded: INCORRECT DOMAIN IN MAIL/RCPT COMMAND. Please verify that your email address is correct in your Mail preferences and try again."

As it suggests I check the outgoing mail setting and try again with the same results.

Has anyone else run into this issue and how did you resolve it?

Answer:Thunderbird and Gmail, sending emails

Not sure. I remember setting my GMail up for pop, but not IMAP. I would post something over on the Mozilla support forums - more people read that and could help.

For years I have used my own domain email addresses hosted with Gmail for all my email requirements, and have had no problems. My settings with Gmail are such that the message on the server is deleted once it has been accessed via Thunderbird.
One thing confuses me though. If I am away on holiday, I sometimes access my messages directly from Gmail using a tablet, and as most of them are unimportant, I then delete them manually from Gmail and then also delete them from the 'bin' folder. However, when I return home at the end of the holiday and switch on my PC, all the messages are then downloaded to Thunderbird, though I have deleted them previously.
Obviously the reason for accessing them on holiday is to avoid having hundreds of messages when I return home, but clearly I am failing to achieve this. Can somebody please explain why this happens, and how I stop it.

The question really says all about what I want to do, or need help on. I recently signed up for a new outlook account to try out the new outlook preview and I've set up gmail to automatically forward new messages to my outlook account so that I can use outlook to manage my gmail account.

Do any of you know how I would be able to forward the old messages, and not the new ones, to my outlook? I already know that they can be fetched into outlook by outlook's very own service, forwarding would be faster, so..?! Also, since I now use outlook to send email on behalf of my gmail account, how do I make it sync each email I send using outlook with my gmail - so that gmail has it all?

TY in advance. Please do help.

Is there a way to import EML to Thunderbird?

Answer:Is there a way to import EML to Thunderbird?

I posted the question here after Googling up what I could find and visiting several sites and finding nothing helpful. But, on a whim, I decided to try something and, to my surprise, it worked. Here 'tis:

How to Import EML Directly Into Thunderbird

Step-by-step instructions

Open Thunderbird
Expand the folders under the desired profile (Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, etc)
In Windows Explorer, open the folder on your hard disk containing the EML files you wish to import.
Arrange both Thunderbird and the EML folder so that both are visible on your screen.
Select the EML files you wish to convert by holding down the CTRL key and clicking once on each EML file (or other method of your choice).
Release the Ctrl key.
Right-drag any one of the EML files from the EML folder and drop it onto any one of the folders in your profile in Thunderbird.
If you have done the above correctly, all highlighted EML files will be imported instantly, complete with Subject, Date, etc.

Hi,

Can anybody tell me if Thunderbird can import Netscape 4.79 mail and how well this goes? Will this go without any trouble or is it not so easy? What's the easiest/best way to do this? Will Thunderbird import the old NS 4.79 mail directly? Also, in NS 4.79 mail you have 2 copies of each file, one without extension and one with the .snm extension. How will Thunderbird deal with this?!

Anybody could give some clear guidelines please? Thanks alot!!

Answer:Can Thunderbird import Netscape 4.79 mail?! How?!

Have you tried simply copying the file over? I'm not familiar with what file type Thunderbird uses to save mail, so that may be a dumb idea. I thought I would mention it, however.

That said...

Netscape's big flaw, and the reason that I switched mail clients, is that in many installs it never deletes any mail permanently. Every piece of mail, spam, etc. that you have ever received may still there, although it appears to be deleted from inside Netscape Messenger.

You may be able to import the Netscape mail into Outlook Express, and then Thunderbird will import it from Outlook Express. That's another idea that should work. If not, download the mail client Poco for the thirty day trial. It will most definitely import from Netscape. The thing about it is that it may well find all of your mail, and that can be a hassle. Still, it is worth a try. While you have the thirty day trial, you may as well give Poco a try. I believe that it is the most flexible, most secure and most user friendly mail client around.

How do I import the Thunderbird address book to OE 6. Thunderbird V.15.0.1 OS XP SP3
Thanks,

Billjh

Answer:Import address book from Thunderbird to OE6

Not straightforward but do-able: http://www.freeemailtutorials.com/mozillaThunderbird/exportAddressBooks.cwd
Or this (seems simpler than the above):

First Export the Address Book from Thunderbird to the Desktop.
Tools > Address Book
If you have created more than one Address Book, select the one you want to Export.
Tools > Export
Save the file as an .ldif file to the Desktop.

Open Outlook Express and Import the Address Book,
File > Import > Other Address Book

Select LDIF - LDAP Data Interchange Format
Click Import

The Address Book should be Imported.

Hi Friends,I've been trying Mozilla Thunderbird instead of Outlook Express and have been impressed - apart from trying to import the email address book from OE. The rest of the installation was smooth and easy but this didn't happen. It said that the address book couldn't be found. My fault by letting someone else mess with the pc! I did find the .wab address book eventually, but in trying to open it, I was told 'the address book has been locked by another application. Please close the application and try later. How can I unlock this or, as OE seems to be messed around, can I re-install it to free it? But where could I download a fresh copy from? Also, if I release the wab file, where do I place it in the Thunderbird file in the application data file in Documents and settings folder if I manually import it? I ue Windows XP Professional. Just done a search on here but I can't quite find what I am looking for.

I want to move from Outlook 2007 to Thunderbird. When I try to run the Thunderbird import wizard to import my mail into it I get the following error message:

"Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfil the messaging request. Please run MS Outlook and set it as the default client".

I'm not sure what's going on here; however I have both Outlook 2007 and Thunderbird loaded up so I can't see why this won't work.

Can anyone point me to a solution please? I don't want to go back to MSO 2007 if I can help it.

Thanks

WB

Answer:Solved: Thunderbird Import Wizard

OK problem solved via another website. Essentially Thunderbird cannot import from Outlook but can from Outlook Express (go figure).

The solution is to get OE to import from Outlook then get Thunderbird to import from OE! Complicated but it works.

I have heard good things about Thunderbird but I find that its not quite as feature rich as , say Outlook or even Incredimail, where, for the latter, import and export is an absolute breeze.

More complex than the title!

I just got a new computer, running Vista Home Premium.

Old computer is running XP. I did a backup to an outside hard drive of all my old files on the XP computer. I then tried using Easy File Transfer to import the settings and files from my old computer into the new Vista computer.

Pictures imported fine, but Settings for e-mail didn't . I have been using thunderbird on the XP, I had also transfered old Outlook Express e-mails to the backup.

New computer doesn't have Outlook Express, it has Windows Mail. Thunderbird only gives me the option of transferring e-mails from Outlook, Outlook Express or Eudora. Of course, it can't find any of these on the new computer. Can anyone assist me here?

Or do I just lose all of the "archived" e-mails I backed up. I also can't import any of my address/contact files from my old computer or the back-up I made.

thanks for any assistance

Answer:Thunderbird to Outlook 2010 - email import?

What's slow about it? Thunderbird is a pretty basic, simple e-mail editor. If it opens slowly or doesn't respond, I suspect you have other problems.

Also, there's no way to natively import e-mails from Thunderbird into Outlook, so you'd have to hunt for a 3rd party tool.

Hello all...
purchased rebuilt Dell w/Win7. My old email was handled by Verizon which recently said they are no longer doing emails. I was given an option to keep my old email address, but it now would be handled by AOL (so...now had to go to their site and give email address plus new password...ok). Wanted to be able to open from my Opera home page so installed 3rd party Mozilla Thunderbird (Opera has a email thing but I was way too confused, so then read that Mozilla was high rated). Now mozilla gets my emails ok, but I cannot write emails because I can't import my address book from AOL. Mozilla gives instructions but I am either too senile or too tech unsavvy to do it.
Please...I am VERY tech challenged...can someone help me get my addresses???? And yes, AOL does have the addresses on their site.
Thank you in advance,
John

I've been using Thunderbird as my default email client for a few years now,.. I'd like to use Outlook Express occasionally but I don't have my regular contacts in the OE address book. How do I import the address book from OE to Thunderbird.

Answer:How to import address book from Thunderbird to Outlook Express

Hi terrawarra,

I had to do this at work a while back. It's a bit of a game but check out this article.

Basically you export the Thunderbird data as a CSV file, import it to OE and map the data to the headers (ie tell OE what the entries in the address book mean).

Though I didn't need it in the end, I started by making a backup of my data first using MozBackup.

A neighbor has moved from managing her Xfinity mailbox through a MS-IE page to POP access with Thunderbird.

Does anyone know of a method for importing into Thunderbird her address book at Xfinity?

I don't use Comcast/Xfinity, so I don't have a place to do trial and error.
Thanks, Dean

Answer:Solved: Import Address Book from Xfinity to Thunderbird

Thunderbird will import LDIF, .tab, .csv, .txt and .vcf files. (Thunderbird: Tools - Address Book - Tools - Import...)

All she has to do is figure out how to export her Xfinity address book to a .csv (or one of those other formats) file. How to Export Contacts from Comcast/Xfinity may help.

I just created a new gmail account, and imported all my old email from my yahoo email account to my new gmail account. All my messages imported okay into gmail, but for some random reason, a bunch of the emails disappeared from yahoo, although most remained. I have no idea why they disappeared, but I didn't want them to get deleted from yahoo. I just wanted them imported into gmail while keeping them on yahoo too.

So now I'm trying to figure out how to export the missing emails from gmail back to yahoo again. I have no idea how to do this and I've been trying to find out how on Google for over an hour now. There seems to be no straight forward way to do this. I find this hard to believe. It took just a couple minutes to go from yahoo to gmail, so shouldn't there be a way to get them from gmail back to yahoo again? I just want to import what's currently in my gmail inbox to my yahoo mail.

Don't ask why - for now i just want to keep a copy of these emails on both yahoo and gmail. There's got to be a way to do this. can anybody help?

Answer:help - can't import email from gmail to yahoo?

hi one way would be just to forward the emails to the yahoo account. could be time consuming.

Hi,

I have saved my gmail contacts as a .csv file in excel. But, it does give this error message:

Attachment 236078

Although the data is there in excel:

Then I try to import to Windows Live Mail as so:

And it says "importing"..... and then nothing else. No contacts come in and no other message.

Please can somebody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Answer:Import email contacts to WLM from gmail - how?

Sorry - didn't see this thread.

Yeah, the import in WLM and Outlook suffer the same problem. there is no "select all".

So you have to tick each field you want to import.... each time you perform an import. It does remember some fileds, but not the ones you might expect, such as name.

anyway, the default mapping should suffice - just tick all fields and try again.

I am trying to import a .csv file from Microsoft Excel into my Gmail contacts. I have columns titled Name, Email, Address, Fax, URL.
When I do the import, the only things that show up in the Gmail contacts fields are Name and Email. All of the other items are imported into "Notes" for that contact.
I am wondering if there is a way to import these contacts into Gmail, with them all being placed in their correct places?
Thanks!

have been using gmail on thunderbird via IMAP, works great most of the time, havwe a question.

On the folders on the left of the thunderbird screeen I noticed i have created some as subfolders of "[gmail]" and some as subfolders of the top item in the list, ie my gmail address. Having checked that they are all stored on gmail not remotely they are, however, those folders that are stored under "[gmail]" are prefixed as such, those under the top item (my address) are prefixed by IMAP.

What does this mean? Should I create all my folders under "gmail" or the top item if I want to store them all online??

Thanks!

Answer:Gmail via thunderbird

Store them on the top itemif you want them online..Store them in you created folders if you'd like them as offline..

I currently use virginmedia as my service provider and used Thunderbird for my e-mails. However, Virgin have recently upgraded their service and it has resulted in many of my mails, which I can see in my virginmedia mail in-box, not appearing in my Thunderbird in-box. Virgin want £60 to sort this out so I want to switch to gmail instead, but hopefully transferring my Thunderbird address book, previous in-box mails and sent box mails.
Is this all possible if not can anyone tell me how to install Thunderbird on gmail please?
Useless with IT.

Answer:How can I use Thunderbird with gmail

Hi
I use Thunderbird and have gmail accounts. Yes, they work together without issue as far as my experiences go.
Before changing emails accounts to gmail, have you tried checking your settings for your Virgin accounts in Thunderbird? To do this, Tools, Account Options and then click on your account/s in the left hand pane, working your way down from the account name do the account settings etc.
Also, you could try deleting your Virgin account and then re-set it up after checking what settings you need. You could do a search in Google for the settings you need, so as to be sure you have the right settings in the first place.
Apologies if I'm 'teaching you to suck eggs'. I appreciate you may have already tried this
Failing all that, certainly try gmail account. Good luck. Post back with any progress or otherwise. I'm sure others, probably with far more knowledge than myself, will be posting more suggestions too.

Last night I went to add Thunderbird and it could not connect to Gmail. Today I get a email from Gmail saying that it prevented someone from logging into my account last night (which would have been me). It says it does this to protect me from less secure apps like Outlook and Thunderbird. So, is Thunderbird less secure or is this another part of the plot for Google to control the world?

Answer:Thunderbird and Gmail

Thunderbird and Outlook clients both work just fine with Gmail but your Gmail account online need to be configured correctly first. The settings are under Forwarding and POP/IMAP. Once you have done that you can then configure your account in the clients.

I'm using thunderbird and I have a gmail email address. I really like using Thunderbird but the one thing I don't like is that when I check my mail with thunderbird it removes it from gmail so I can only see my mail on my local computer. I'd like to set it up (if possible) that checking my mail in thunderbird would not remove it in gmail. And what would be awesome is if I delete an email in thunderbird, it moves it to the trash in gmail.

I am trying to import a large list of vcards from an old hosted email account to Google Apps/Gmail. I've read multiple posts online about how to combine multiple vcards into a single vcf file to import into Gmail. The most common method is to use the cmd prompt and enter "copy /B *.vcf all_in_one.vcf" or something similar.

The problem is when this file is imported into Gmail, only the last contact in the list is visible and all the other contacts are stored within that one contact. So, all I see is one contact of my hundreds of contacts.

Some posts said the problem with this method is that there needs to be a space or multiple spaces between each vcard in the combined vcf file. I haven't been able to duplicate or figure out how to alter the script do that.

Thank you for the help!

UPDATE: The simplest way to manage Vcards is to import them into your Contacts folder (Windows). From there you can export the vcards as a cvs file, which can be uploaded into Gmail.

Hi - First, I would like to send you a tiny donation - tiny only because of bank account - tiny is OK?

Husband's computer: a new one is about to be unpacked. Right now: I gave him gmail, and he is getting messages there, and can send from there. He also is getting messages in thunderbird, but not the same ones that are coming to gmail. And he cannot send from Thunderbird. He seems to get 3 or 4 messages in Thunderbird, and then the bulk of his email in gmail. What I want: for him to get all his messages in gmail, and for him to temporarily be able to send from Thunderbird. As soon as the new computer goes on line (little pun there) Thunderbird will be a thing of the past. But right now, can you help?

Thanks so much.

Hello everyone. I have a friend who has a few PC's, one is hers, one is her husbands, and another is at a vacation home. They have a Gmail account they share and all of the PC's have the latest version of Thunderbird with the Gmail account setup in it. What they're finding is that if one Thunderbird client downloads a message then it's unavailable for the other clients to download. We've checked the settings in Thunderbird and they're all set to leave the items in the Gmail inbox until they are deleted manually. Any thoughts on why this happens? Is this normal and it's just not possible for a shared mailbox to work in the way they'd like it to work? If this just can't work is there an e-mail option out there that will work? Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.?

Hi,

I installed Thunderbird email client for my gmail account.

When I started to add account I found one options specially for Gmail. Wow! Nice, I thought I proceeded. It was simple and it started to work. Thunderbird was using POP this way.

Next when I checked Google's directions for adding account to Thunderbird, they tell to use IMAP. Completely different procedure.

Should I use IMAP or POP? Why does Google gives directions to use IMAP for Thunderbird but POP for rest like Outlook, Outlook Express and Eudora?

Please someone explain. Thanks in advance

Answer:Thunderbird and gmail confusion

Hello Romeo29,

You can use POP or IMAP for either one. Here is the difference. With IMAP mail, when messages are downloaded to your e-mail client's Inbox, they also remain on the server. In other words, if you shut off your computer, went to the library, and opened your g-mail account in webmail, you would see all your messages that were previously downloaded to your inbox at home.

Now, let's say that you decided, while on web-mail, to delete some of those messages in the inbox. When you go back home, open your e-mail client, the client will reload the messages from the inbox, but the ones you deleted from the inbox while on the webmail interface will now be gone from the inbox in Thunderbird as well.

Now, if you are using POP, the messages downloaded to your Inbox will no longer be in the Inbox on the webmail interface. Now here is what is rather interesting with g-mail in contrast to some other e-mail providers. All messages that were downloaded to your computer you can still find in the trash box on g-mail's webmail interface. With other e-mail providers, those messages would no longer be on the server at all.

Going back to I-MAP. If you are using an e-mail client, if you move messages from your inbox to local folders, with most e-mail providers, those messages would now be gone from the provider's servers. With g-mail, those messages will appear in Trash. If you move messages to folders you create under the e-mail account, those messages will then appear in ... Read more

I am running Windows XP, and have Thunderbird 2.0.0.9 running. I was using it to send/receive Gmail.

When I turned my computer on today, I found that Thunderbird had lost the details of the Gmail account. So I set up a new account using my old account details, and it managed to find the file folders for my emails stored on my computer.

Although I can send emalis, I cannot receive them, it keeps returning a 'timeout' error when I try to access Gmail.

Accessing Gmail is no problem however through the web interface.

I have set up the incoming server as pop.gmail.com

I dont have ssl but I was told to set it up as TLS Port 110.

Any thoughts on whats going on?

Check your settings. Look at them carefully. Sometimes a simple spelling mistake or a , instead of a . or even the spacing will throw everything off kilter. I'm posting this here because I think this is a security issue.

I decided to archive all my Gmail messages by downloading them to my computer via Thunderbird. However, after I installed the program and entered in my account information (it even seemed to auto configure properly), the message I get is ?Configuration could not be verified ? in the username or password wrong?? I found some information that, with changes to Gmail, only a specific version of Thunderbird going forward would work. I downloaded the latest one. When looking into Google security, there is a new permission page setup that you have to give permission to Android apps so that they can be allowed to access your account information. However, I don?t know how to give Thunderbird permission.

Is there a way to give Thunderbird permission to access your Gmail?

Firstly, I have verified we are using the correct user name and password by logging into GMail on the web. I have opened my Thunderbird and his Tuunderbird side-by-side and compared the settings to be identical. I have also opened his GMail "Forwarding and POP/IMAP" and mine side-by-side and those settings are identical also. Mine works and his doesn't.

I have tried all of the suggestions on this page to no avail.

I have also done screen captures of my settings and his so you can see they are identical. These are his screen shots. Mine will be in my next post.
