Preferred Solution: Microsoft Irony

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is out as of today. I prepaid for it, and even bought a 20in WS LCD to replace my POS 19in 25ms LCD for the game.

Late last night, my PC died. Thats right, dead. I walked into the room to find it stuck on a stop error. So I rebooted. Stop error again. So I booted to Safe Mode. Stop error. I booted to a WinPE CD. Stop error. I ran memtest from a CD. A few hours later, I had accumulated a good oh...5 million some odd errors.

So I shut off the PC, and removed a stick of Ram. Turn the machine on and what do I see?

BIOS Checksum Bad. Starting Recovery...

So I put in the Asus CD, and it automatically reflashes the BIOS. Reboot. Same problem.

So I try the other ram stick. Not even a video response. Same in all slots. I tried other ram. Once again, nothing but the fans fired up.

So here I sit today, pondering just how cool Oblivion is, knowing I can't play it for at least two weeks while my RMAs(for the mb and ram) are being processed.

I hate computers.

Hello!

OS: Vista home basic (have tried twice to download Service Pack 1 and both times it has gone through the whole rigmarole and then FAILED. Ugh.). Chrome browser.

I moved out of NYC to the boondocks. So, I am on dialup at home, and borrow WiFi at McDonald's & wherever else I can get it.

Was on WiFi last week and spending too much time "Resolving Host." Everything started with the long "resolving host" wait times.

Checked Chrome Extensions and found that three misspelled versions of something similar to "download keeper" had inserted extensions onto my Chrome (looking like "DoWnLoAd keeepEUR" or something like that, three different variations--since deleted). Also, an IP had been inserted in my hosts file, also immediately deleted.

Deleting those weird Extensions and cleaning up the Hosts file helped, but not entirely. So I read about disabling IPv6, and inserted FFFFFFFF into the appropriate place in the registry, which did not speed up my connection at all: still "resolving host" problems and unusually slow (now on dialup this week, and yes, dialup is slow, but, not like this).

So, yesterday connected to WiFi at the local library to go through the malware removal process recommended by majorgeeks (did it once before on this PC in 2010, and on a previous machine in 2006), and a few things were found yesterday--but I had to re-create my dial-up connection today after booting up the PC again--and ... It's not really a problem, but here goes anyway.

I've spent the past couple days here trying to help people with various problems. Turns out, most of those problems were power-related. PS quits, or symptoms of a bad PS, or ways to diagnose. You name it, it usually circled around power supplies.

About 8PM tonight (EST) my power supply quit on me.

After about a half hour solid of laughing at the irony of the situation, I found out the 3.3v supply lines were deceased, but the 5v and 12v were fine.

I have an old AT-style chassis that's loaded with drive bays, and no PS. And somewhere in my garage, I have a dusty old PCI backplane board from an older Dell machine. (I saved it because I had noticed that the expansion slots were wired straight-through without interruption, making it usable for expanding expansion. heh)

I'm gonna use that board, the old chassis, and this defunct power supply unit to build a massive expansion chassis and drive housing system.

Now that I think of it, there is a teensy little problem there. How do you turn on an ATX power supply in one chassis by throwing the power switch on the main computer? Any gizmo tinkerers out there have any ideas on this?

Answer:Solved: Oh! The irony! LOL (power problem)

You can jump start an ATX powersupply by shorting a pair of the wires in the 20pin plug, there are guides on the web on how to do this, Google for "jump start atx powersupply".

I never run antivirus at home...I run antivirus at work.

My work computer is the one that got hit today and I have no idea how. I did not go to any websites other than Microsoft to get another Win7 key. Every thing was fine this morning until I stepped away for 20 minutes. I come back and my computer is FUBARED.

Go to google.com, do a search. Every time I click on link that starts with "go.google.com", I get redirected to something like 64.117.xx.xxx, I forgot the full address.

If I try to run Malwarebytes, SuperAntiSpyware, the apps start and then crash immediately. Likewise, I can not go to either website, I get forwarded to some fake anti spyware software site.

Absolutely nothing in my running services, hosts file was untampered, nothing in startup...I couldn't find what the deal was at all.

Searches for people with my problem came up with nothing useful that would help me resolve the issue. So, I had to back up my files and reinstall Windows(installed Win7 this time).

What baffles me is how I got this and that there is little to no information on people experiencing the same issues. My computer was 100% up to date, antivirus was up to date, and I had not gone to any website different than normal, hell I wasn't even at my computer(which was locked when im afk).

BTW: I'm using the most up to date version of Firefox, I thought it was impervious

Had the same issue at work to. Apparnetly its a driver that redirects most search engines to the go subdomain. Go to your device manager, show hidden devices, and check under Non-Plug and Play Drivers for any driver that has a .sys on the end. Think it starts with Q or V. Disable, not uninstall, the driver. Once its disabled, restart, then uninstall it.

Once its gone, try installing Malwarebyte's Anti-Spyware in safe mode. Try running it in safe mode too. Most of the rogue files that it removes that come with this driver are in the System32 directory.

Hello in There All,
What is about to be described is a grotesque irony; please bear with me.
The system is WinXP Pro SP3 build 2600-install disc is WinXP Pro SP1 version 2002.
Was simply setting up network connection thru network connections/wizard; prompted to reboot for changes to take effect, rebooted, and unholy Beelzebub, the system arbitrarily and independently created a boot password screen with my username and a password from another world, unbeknownst to and not initiated by me. Good Grief! Well, attempted 3rd party utilities (0PHCrack, OFFLINE NT Password/Registry)to no avail. At password screen, it will not recognize CTRL+ALT+DEL(2).There is no hidden administrator selection. Can access DOS thru install disc repair feature, but it does not support CMD (not in 'help' list). Cannot even enter Safe Mode because the password screen is there first. Was suggested I try Ubuntu, Mint, (not familiar with, and have not yet tried them). Grotesque insult to ironic injury, nobody will help me because TSL rules expressly forbid password breach assistance (and I do understand the malevolent potential), but this IS my distressed conundrum. The system did NOT ask, advise, nor inform me of what it did until it was done. Now Bill's boondoggle is my nightmare; locked out of my own machine, clueless. What in the universe is one to do? If there is a Mighty Tech somewhere with the solution, there is nothing I would not do to express my supreme gratitude. 9 1 1 to the Tech World. Ple... Read more

After watching my laptop update for nearly 20 minutes, sitting at 100% I had to force the power off and reboot the system. Now it is re-running through the update process. The supposed auto updates are to make the OS safer, but I think forcefully shutting off the power to use your PC mid update is more likely to cause problems to your OS install than any supposed security hole. The long load times force many users to force the system off mid update due to the updater choosing its own schedule, which tends to be in the most inconvenient times. I merely wanted to use the SD card on my laptop, a 30 second task. Not wait 20+ minutes for an unexpected update that would hang at 100%.

I can imagine for the typical user who needs to use their PC in a hurry or turn off their PC in a hurry as they have to leave/conserve batter life forcefully powering off their OS will cause more instability in the long run.

My options are to buy Win 10 Pro for my laptop and likely reinstall the OS, which I do not care to do. Or buy an SD card reader for my desktop. I think the SD card reader will be cheaper/more handy.

Considering most laptops don't come with Win 10 Pro, it makes going Apple a much more real possibility for me laptop wise in the future. It is not like I can customize or built my laptop anyways. I can only imagine the typical laptop user being even more frustrated than I am due to the extremely inconvenient updater with a low reliability rate.

My short rant is over.

Here?s a lovely bit of irony for you: Adblock Plus, which is by far the most popular add-on for Firefox and Chrome, is actually increasing the amount of memory used by your web browser, rather than decreasing it. Furthermore, ABP also increases the amount of time (and CPU cycles) required to render a website. Instead of making web surfing more responsive, ABP actually makes your surfing experience slower.

This might seem counterintuitive at first ? after all, ABP blocks all of those annoying animated Flash ads from loading, and so it should save you from unnecessary memory and CPU hits. Unfortunately, the actual situation is a lot more complex than that. Basically, ABP has grown too big for its own good, and just the very process of running ABP in your web browser consumes more memory and CPU cycles than it saves.
How Adblock Plus works

To begin with, according to Mozilla developer Nicholas Nethercote, there is a 60-70MB memory hit having Adblock Plus run in the background on Firefox. The main problem, though, is the process by which ABP actually blocks ads. Basically, ABP inserts a massive CSS stylesheet ? occupying around 4MB of RAM ? into every single webpage that you visit, stripping out the ads. This wouldn?t be a problem if we were still in the ?90s or early ?00s, but nowadays it is very common for a webpage to have lots of iframes, which are separate, individual webpages that are loaded and embedded within the page you?re currently looking at. Frequently, not always, my up-to-date copy of Google Chrome fails to load Google Search. Particularly if I use the search/address bar, but even if I enter google.com. Other google sites load. In fact, when this happens, I just use the search web box in Gmail. Other sites have no problem loading and the computer is running fine. Other browsers (ie, firefox) never have a problem loading google.

Any ideas why this is happening? I ran through the malware removal guide months ago, but I'm going to do it again. I searched the boards and google and didn't find anything about this specific and weird problem.

Chris

Answer:Oh the irony - Google Chrome won't load Google Search

The only time I have ever had a problem getting the Chrome browser to load Google.com (both via address bar and bookmark) is when I'm on the Fedora Linux box. I just chalk it up to another one of the bajillion things that doesn't work right in Lamux. You get what you pay for. Were you, too, running Linux when you had this problem?

I know the title is rather ironic, but i was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. i will explain.I have fallen in love with skiing scince my school ski trip last year, and now want to begin racing, and save 800 for next years trip. well racing gear costs alone about 900, 700 of which is for skis, so, in total, by christmas, i need to earn 1700, which for a 15 year old seems oretty impossible. Currently i have 2 jobs, a paper round, which gives me 10 a week, and 1 day a week on a golf course, giving me another 20, so per week i currently have 30 income. Unfortunately, this will only earn me 750 by christmas, the time when i will require the full sum of 1700. right, well now the sympathy part is over, i can ask for advice. Being a self confessed computer geek, and a who dares wins kind, im trying my absolute hardest to find some way of earning this money. i thought it might me a good idea to try to find a part time job in the computer world. now what i ideally want to do is to go to an old persons house, spend an hour or so teaching them/fixing their pc, and earn like 15 an hour. now im not suggesting that i only want to deal with old people, im just trying to explain the kind of thing i would love to be able to do, and make money at the same time during the summer. I can quite easily advertise through word of mouth, putting leaflets in my papers, and giving buisness cards to local shops, but i was wondering if i would need insurance or anything else a... We use a third-party Microsoft patch management system, unfortunately we have to approve all patches manually. It has become a monotonous task to jump on the security bulletin and manually "take-note" of all of the updates released (KB numbers)
to mitigate that vulnerability. After I take note of all of them, I have to jump on the "third-party Microsoft patch management system" and approve every patch (KB #) associated with that Bulletin.
I am wondering if there is an easier way to get a list of all of the new Microsoft patches released just for a specific Microsoft Security Bulletin. My current method is just sifting through the Bulletin and copying/pasting every KB number I find that is
designed to patch the vulnerability.
I would assume there is somewhere I can go or a tool I can utilize which would allow me to get the list of all of the KB numbers that need to be approved.
Or Am I out of luck (And just have to sift through the Bulletin to collect the associated KBs)?

I appreciate any and all suggestions/advice/ridicule.

Hello maskin26,

Make sure that you don't have any media in the drives (cd,floppy, etc)

Was anything recently added before the problem?

Boot into the BIOS and make sure that the HDD is recognized by the system and check the boot order.

Hi guys. I have windows updates set to manual. Yesterday i checked for updates and found more that 10 important updates. I selected all for installing. I recieved two _80070103 error
messages for "Microsoft - Pointing Drawing - Microsoft Hardware USB Mouse" and "Microsoft - Keyboard, Other hardware - Microsoft Hardware USB Keyboard" updates. I looked at update history and found out 8 similiar update failures !
I have windows 8.1 and i use wireless keyboard and mouse. Shall i just unistall that failed updates or it might affect my mouse and keyboard performance? Thank you!

Answer:microsoft - pointing drawing - microsoft hardware usb mouse download fail.

Hi Alona,
If you receive Windows Update error 80070103 while installing updates, you might be trying to install a driver that is already installed on your computer or a driver that might be less compatible than one you already have installed.

So, if you did not encounter any performance issue about mouse and keyboard before, you can hide these updates and don't install them again.

Save both reports to your desktop.
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here or here. Extract the contents of the zipped file to your desktop.
Double click GMER.exe. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please agree to do so.
If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO.
In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...Sections

Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish.
Once the scan completes, click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "ark.txt".
Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop

However, you could buy a Qi receiver pad on Amazon that will plug into the microUSB and then may be folded to fit under a case and provide charging from any Qi Pad such as DT-904.
You need one with the correct orientation at the port such as this one: http://www.amazon.com/Universal-Wire...pUvbUpU3486457
So, yes, with an easy add on.

I'm using the Windows XP operating system and had Microsoft Office installed on it a while ago. All the applications were working fine when I first got it. Yesterday, when I tried to open Microsoft Excel I get the message that 'the feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available', and it asks me to insert the 'Microsoft Office 2000 Premium' disk and click ok. Unfortunately, I don't have this disk because it was someone else that installed Office on my computer for me. I don't understand why it's not letting me use Microsoft Excel and why I get this message from Windows Installer every time I try to use the application.

It was working fine not long ago and I've used it to make several spreadsheet files, all of a sudden for no apparent reason I'm getting this message every time I try to use it.

Can anyone give me any advice and has anyone had a similiar problem? I would appreciate any help.

Answer:Microsoft Excel help, keeps asking for 'Microsoft Office 2000 Premium' disk

When it was installed, some aspects will be "installed on first use", and now it wants to install the function, for which you need the CD.

You really cannot use it successfully (not to mention legally) if you do not own and have the disks.

Windows 9 will reportedly have new activation methods that will tie the OS more closely with a specific PC

Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) will unveil Windows 9 this fall, claims notorious Russian leaker WZor, who has a pretty good track record. In a Russian language post on Ru-Board, the leaker said that the upcoming update to Windows 8 will be the last major overhaul of the existing OS. Microsoft is expected to launch the Windows 8 Update 2 in August.

Windows 9 to have new activation methods

WZor claimed that Microsoft will back the launch of Windows 9 with heavy advertising blitzkrieg and a new distribution method. The new activation methods will tie a copy of Windows 9 more closely with a specific PC. It will require the user to log in to Microsoft Store, and users won’t be given an activation key. Talking about Windows 8, WZor said that there will be new updates after the Update 2 due next month. But no new features will be added to it.

Motivation behind the new activation method is “problems in China.” The world’s most populous country recently banned Windows 8. Notably, a couple of weeks ago, WZor claimed that Microsoft may announce Windows 9 at its Worldwide Partner Conference, which begins July 13 in Washington D.C. That claim was missing in the latest report, but WZor reassured us that the new OS will be launched this fall. However, he only talked about the announcement, without revealing whether it will be a Developer... Read more

Answer:Microsoft to Force Microsoft Store Account to Activate Windows 9

Not sure how logging into the store ties the OS more specifically to a computer. Doesn't seem right at all. However, if it is only logging onto the Microsoft Store to activate, and not forcing a Microsoft account to use the computer, I can see that being okay. As long as the local account continues to be an option, things will be fine. If I'm forced to use a Microsoft account to use my computer... I'll stay on 8.1. And then maybe move to Linux.

Transformation of UI is already being done in 8.1 Update 1. No surprise that it would be further enhanced.

Launch of 9 wouldn't put an end to 8. And let's face it, Microsoft never lost its dominance on the desktop market. There is nothing for them to re-establish here. The only thing they need to establish is a stronger presence in the mobile market.

Hi, I have an access Database that has a form wich contains 2 OLE Object fields in one I use it to paste a link to an excel field and the other field I use it to paste a link to a word document. This is running under windows 7 and office 2010. Every was working fine. I had to change my notebook harddisk and mother board. After this I reinstall windows 7 and office 2010. The problem that I have is the following: When I double click in the excel link it works fine an open my excel file. When I do the same with the word link I got the following message (translated because I have my notebook with spanish language "Error during an operation over an Object Document. It is possible the OLE Server is not registered. To Register it, reinstall it" Its very extrange because my database worked fine before I reinstalled windows and office and the thing the it works fine with the excel link but not with the word link. Please if anyone have and idea of what is going on??? Thanks a lot in advance for your help.

Answer:Issue linking to a Microsoft Word document in Microsoft Access

Welcome to TSG jcantini,
Since no one is offering any thing here I'm going to suggest you save the document in the current version of word and reistablish/rebuild the link. I suspect this is an older version of access running with office 2010? mdb file type?

If you google "the ole server isn't registered access 2010" there are tons of confusing suggestions out there! Good luck..

I recently purchased an ASUS Windows 8.1 64 bit computer. I transferred my Microsoft Works Version 8.0 word processor and spreadsheet files from my old computer onto the new computer. I just purchased the Microsoft Office 2013 Home and Student Edition (64 bit version) from an online vendor and installed the software onto my new computer.

I have no problems opening my Works spreadsheet files in Excel. However, when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get gibberish. I did some research online and found out that there is a Microsoft tool called Works 6-9 Converter which allows one to open Works files in Word.

I downloaded the Works 6-9 Converter tool from the Microsoft Support website and installed it on my PC. However, when I subsequently attempted to open a Works word processor file in Word, a dialog box appeared with the error message "Word cannot start the converter Wks9Pxy.cnv" and the file did not open properly (i.e., I got gibberish).

I did a little more research online and found out that uninstalling the Works 6-9 Converter, then downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package, and finally reinstalling the Works 6-9 Converter may correct this problem. I followed these steps, but unfortunately when I attempt to open a Works word processor file in Word, I get the same error message and the file does not open properly. ... We've got Outlook on all our machines at work but can only access the main "Outlook.pst" on the server one user at a time. Not simultaneously.

There was some message about needing "Microsoft Exchange Server" in order to share the same file on a network.

Does anyone know more about this?

Answer:Using Microsoft Outlook on a network... requires Microsoft Exchange Server?

Seconded, There are other ways to share a calendar: netfolders, etc. but NONE are reliable.

At the same times there are some alternatives to Exchange, as well. I'd find a local consultant and ask for advice.

Microsoft Office 2010 is installed on my PC (Dell Studio XPS8100, Windows 7). Another member of the household has asked whether she can install Microsoft Works 9.0 on my PC, now that her PC is on its last legs. (She greatly prefers Works over Office, for its simplicity and because of her long-term familiarity with Works.) If Works 9.0 is installed onto my PC, would this cause problems for Office 2010, Works 9.0, and/or my PC? If so, are there workarounds? Thanks.

Answer:Microsoft Works 9.0 and Microsoft Office 2010 compatibility

The official "word" from Microsoft (pun intended) is that Office & Works can co-exist on the same PC.

Provided you do not intend to share documents between Office & Works (ie both suites will be used separately), there are no "workarounds" or special procedures you need to remember when using them.

So I stumbled across this today, first I'd heard of it so far. I've been using MSE, and now on Win 8 Defender, for ages...... Am I going to ditch WD this weekend? Dunno, maybe...

So what are your thoughts? Time to ditch MSE/Defender? Blown out of proportion?

I still say the best AV is common sense, but for the likes of those who click blindly, would you still recommend or install MSE?

How's this for corporate transparency and honesty? Microsoft is now saying that, yeah, its built-in Security Essentials antivirus program will "always be on the bottom" of antivirus software rankings, so you should use an additional third-party program on top of it.

PC Pro reports that Microsoft has decided to turn Security Essentials into a "baseline" program and it does not intend to be the best antivirus program in the business. Instead the company is just sharing its virus tracking findings with the security industry so they can develop better antivirus programs.

Um, okay. So what does this mean for Windows users? Basically, if you want better virus and malware protection, look elsewhere than the built-in program offered by Microsoft. I'm using the free program Avast, based on reliability ratings. (Sometimes the program pops up annoying notification windows, but it isn't a system resource hog, at least, and usually unintrusive while offering peace of mind.)

Microsoft Security Essentials has been failing independent s... Read more

Answer:Microsoft's Security Essentials isn't the best antivirus program, according to Microsoft

Despite seeing MSE at the bottom of 'that' list, I was quite amused at how many other big names were as mediocre.

MS bought a good AV company, one of the top in it's day, seems like, as many others before, they've let it slide. Shame.

On the fence myself, I really don't like Avast, will probable look for some alternative, when I have more time. May try out Bitdefender.

oh, well that was easy enough, done!

My laptop was bonused to me by my former employer. As I understood it our access to e-mail was through Microsoft Exchange Server. Now I would like to use Microsoft Outlook but when I double-click on the icon to run it I get a message saying my default folder cannot be found and the attempt to log on to the Microsoft Exchange Server failed.

I have attached a screen capture of the message. I have also attached a file containing my laptop system information.

Could someone please tell me where I need to make changes to eliminate the attempts to log on to a Server that I'm sure I don't mean to be accessing anyway? Is there a way to access the default folder it is referring to (if it is even on my computer) in case there is something left there that I would want to read or archive? How do I get everything set up to make Microsoft Outlook functional?

Any help would be appreciated.

Yesterday I serviced a Win7 Toshiba laptop that was in tough shape: it's performance was terrible. A big part of the problem was that the computer was umpteen behind in Windows Updates plus the owner had just about every Microsoft Office product and all of them needed Windows Updates, both security and updates. OK that's not the first time I've seen that; however, the owner uses Google Chrome as his browser.
My questions are
Aren't Microsoft's Windows Updates supposed to be kept up to date even when a different browser is being used?
And doesn't Google Chrome or other browsers have a method for that to happen?
Fortunately the good news is the computer is back to running like new again.

Answer:Do non-microsoft browsers have a method for Microsoft's Windows Updates?

Only Microsoft products (and certain drivers pushed via Windows Updates) are being updated via Windows Updates. Other products and web browsers uses their own update process/program. Google Chrome uses the Google Update Program, while Mozilla Firefox uses the Mozilla Maintenance Service (I think). So no, Windows Update isn't responsible for the update of other web browsers, other than Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge (on Windows 10).

hey guys, i just heard about this recently after reading another thread and it sounds great.

main points:

- free
- low system use
- created by microsoft (good or bad i guess)
- updated regularly

what do you guys think? i heard it only uses 5 or 6mb of memory and isn't plagued with the bloat and slowdowns other AV software create.

i'm just worried about giving MS too much information on my PC.

right now i'm running avast and this has been pretty decent for me so far, but this MSE sounds like it has promise.

edit: i'll be formatting soon so i thought i'd try it out with a clean system. im considering trying it out soon though.

Microsoft Outlook 2013 (365) continues to crash every 2 months on my laptop. I have had 3 sessions with Microsoft support online since November. They are unable to fix the problem so it won't continue to reoccur. They have reinstalled it on 3 occasions and within 2 months, Outlook is unresponsive. Cannot receive/send any email. OneNote uses your Microsoft account to sync notes to your phone, PC, and Web.Click to expand...

We have a user with a new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 tablet running Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro with the latest updates and a copy of Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus. This fullscreen message will pop-up randomly whether user is idling or actively working on tablet, even if user does not have OneNote open. None of the user's OneNote Notebooks are set to synchronize or save to the web or OneDrive. In fact, OneDrive isn't even installed. User has two Notebooks, both of which I personally created for the user, and had specifically set it to keep the Notebooks local and not save anywhere else.

How do I turn this off? How do I stop this stupid fullscreen message permanently? This isn't good for Corporate/Enterprise environments.

Problem: Outlook starts normally with a POP3 account in a POP3 Outlook profile. However, I have a work Exchange account which I configured using instructions yesterday. Worked fine. Yet today, Outlook crashes - fails on opening Microsoft Exchange Account. Hangs and then forced exit produces Microsoft error report. On restarting, Outlook says that "outlookaddin.dll" caused a serious error and has been disabled. Disabling it means that Outlook no longer pulls down emails from Exchange. Re-enabling it causes the crash again, Catch-22.

Versions:
Dell XPS M1210 - brand new.
Microsoft XP Professional SP2 (fully patched)
Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 SP2 (fully patched)
McAfee SecurityCenter pre-loaded by Dell.

I configured the Exchange profile yesterday and it worked fine. Changes -- possible cuplrits? -- in the meantime:

1. A large McAfee patch was installed semi-automatically.
2. Attempted to install Treo 650 Palm Hotsync. This did not complete successfully. Hung while hotsyncing to Outlook. Then uninstalled successfully.

What I've tried, but which does not fix the problem:

a. Detect and Repair run within Outlook completes successfully.
b. Disabled and uninstalled McAfee Spamkiller.
c. Remove the Exchange profile through Control Panel > Mail, and create a new one with a different name.

Suggestions very gratefully received!

I'm using windows 2000 professional and was infected by the blaster worm (get rid of it with the symantec tool), now I'm trying to apply the windows patch, but it says I have to have at least the windows service pack 2 in order to begin installation.

I tried several times to dowload the service packs from the Microsoft site, but they are huge (128 mb) and I'm on 56k, so I always get disconnected or timed out, also tried the online installation (smaller download), but the results were the same (after awhile, the download times out and I can't resume).

Is there any other place were I can download those files?, maybe FTP or something? (maybe someone could upload them to an FTP)?

As a side note, why aren't the files zipped/rared? I actually managed to download a whole .exe file (took me about 24 hours), only to find out it was damaged!

I recently downloaded Microsoft 8.1 from 8.0. Since then I have had several issues. I have worked many of them out. I needed to install the Kindle app in metro. It wanted me to put in my local user password, I did. Then it wanted me to log into my Microsoft account, with password, I did. Then it wanted a code number. I put that in. Then it wanted to put all my documents, pictures, and settings into the cloud. That was something I was unsure whether to do or not. If I agree to that, it then wants to switch me from my local user account, to my Microsoft account. I don't want to do that. Why can't I just keep my local user account? If I do allow this to happen, I will automatically go to Metro won't I? I don't want to start in Metro. I want to start in the desktop, which is where I spend most of my time. I also read this somewhere, and you had to be on the internet and logged in Microsoft to use your computer. Is this right? If it is, I surely do NOT want to do that. I wish I had stayed with 8.0. It worked fine there. Now it has become a royal pain in the rear.

Answer:why does Microsoft want me to switch in metro to Microsoft account?

Nothing will change in your personal account, when you sign in as a microsoft account. It will backup your profile, so if you end up buying a new machine, or having to reinstall Windows 8.x, everything will come back up on your computer as it was (desktop picture, user picture). As for Metro, you do not need to use Metro, to run the Kindle App.

The best thing is to not use Metro, use the desktop, and load the desktop version of the Kindle app instead. The only person making this a royal pita, is you, not Microsoft.

I am still hanging on to my old Publisher 97 and have always been able to hook up to microsoft's online clip gallery for additional clip art that I need for my newsletter that I print. An error message shows that I don't have microsoft office installed, therefore making the clip-art unavailable to me. Any ideas on what has happened? Maybe I just need to give into Microsoft and pay the $99 for the upgrade?

I suspect you're right. MS probably doesn't support Pub 97 for clipart anymore. If it's any consolation, I love Pub 2000 and find it easier to create my newsletters, brochures, business cards, etc.

But seems to hapipen when I had installed Norton Firewall 2003; but have removed it and have redone my computer again. But again, Express and Outlook are slow to boot. I have no idea what else. Wondering if there is anyone else that is having the same problem and if they have resolved the situtaiton.

Thanks.

I have installed the Microsoft Professional 2013 on my Dell Desktop computer and find that Microsoft Outlook
is much different than the previous version I was running Office 2010

I caused about 20 emails to be deleted off the email server when I selected delete the email after having
completed reading. In outlook 2010 there was a setup where you could tell Outlook to not delete the
email off the server. I am unable to locate where to check or set it up in Outlook 2013. Can someone
give me some direction, can this still be setup or no longer available is Outlook 2013?

Thank you for your assistance.

"PHOENIX ? Sept. 16, 2009 ? Today, at Microsoft Project Conference 2009, Microsoft Corp. announced that the public beta of Microsoft Project 2010 will become available later this year, and revealed the product?s enhanced project and portfolio management features for the first time. Microsoft also disclosed packaging information that streamlines the number of Microsoft Project editions from four to three. Starting today, customers can pre-register for the Microsoft Project 2010 beta at Microsoft Project 2010."
Full press release is available here - Microsoft Unveils Microsoft Project 2010.
Interesting to note, that the product no longer has "Office" prefix in its name (like "Microsoft Office Project 2007" did), and in the press release it is referred to as an Office-related product.
Also, if you could make it into the Microsoft Project Conference 2009 that will be held from September 14-17, 2009 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, AZ., you would get a free licensed copy of Microsoft Project Professional 2010 after launch.

Yesterday at 16:53 GMT+1 my account was accessed, with either my own pretty safe password (Changed it already) Or a workaround for badguys is being used (Keylogger, using Microsoft Safety Scanner now to check anything MBAM can't find)
and a Microsoft IP is beng spoofed. That, or one of the MicroGods used special powers to obtain or circumvent my password.
Either way, I need your assistance in tracing this security incident.
I know I'm a Microsoft Enthousiast / Evangelist / MCP / MCTS, who invested much, but not for the last time, in Certification, and my TechNet contract still has some days left. So, in my humble opinion I'm asking the right person here. Also
because the IP-address used for this never seen before activity, is located in Bellevue. Let me state clearly, I trust Microsoft, and have very little to hide from you, but if you're going to look into my account in an Obvious way, that's weird. Your Godmode
should be able to not leave a trace in my security log. So in that case a peer of yours wanted me to contact Microsoft, and again, I want to know the reason. What was done. Why? And why from the States?
As for hacking and IP-spoofing: Everything is logged everywhere nowadays, at least transactions are, so I hope you could help me find out where the hypothetical malicious access is being performed from.
And while I'm asking you this way to long question, please also make clear if Microsoft a... Read more

Answer:My Microsoft Account was accessed by a Microsoft IP, can you explain please?

It is better to keep in touch with Microsoft Account support team to investigate it . If Microsoft was really wanted to hack into your system, they were smart enough not do it directly from their office. It is possible someone used IP Spoofing, which means
using certain software to produce fake IP Address. So let say, if you are in Europe, it will produce IP to websites which display you are in U.S.

Just thinking aloud ...
Microsoft has released Microsoft Safety Scanner. It discontinued Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner.
For end-users, Microsoft already has Malicious Software Removal Tool which scans for select malware only. Microsoft also has Microsoft Security Essentials, a free antivirus.
Now MSS will scan for and remove all malware that MSE does!
So obviously a MSE user wont have the need for MSS. So the only reason could be that MS hopes that those using other 3rd party antivirus programs, may use MSS as an on-demand scanner.
And now, now do we need the MSRT? Sure its a small download which can be pushed via WU ... but otherwise, it does get superseded I suppose.
Your thoughts...

Answer:Why did Microsoft release Microsoft Safety Scanner?

Safety Scanner was more than just a Virus scanner as you may know. It did registry checks and a few other things and I will be sorry to see it go. I used to use it regularly to verify that an infected machine did not have any remnants of infections on it after using a few of the other pretty powerful tools out there. MSE while free for most home and personal use does have licensing limitations to it, so it is NOT a solution for everyone out there.

You may want to check, but on my Vista I don't see any new add-on and I don't even have C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack folder. http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2010...lbar-update.ars As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update for its various toolbars, and this update came with more than just documented fixes. The update also installs an add-on for Internet Explorer and an extension for Mozilla Firefox, both without the user's permission. As you can see in the Windows Update screenshot above, Microsoft does not indicate that the update will install anything for either browser. It's also not really clear what the installed extension actually does.

Answer:Microsoft hides mystery Firefox extension in toolbar update As part of its regular Patch Tuesday, Microsoft released an update...

Thanks Broni for the information. As for Firefox can't I just delete the extension. Let us all see which company gits back to B/C with some sort of answer.

Hi guys, first off I haven't been here for help in years literally this was the first place I thought of because a few years ago many generous people helped me solve my problem, this place is awesome. Please pardon me as I am only decently literate with computers but try my best.

Ok I am trying to solve an annoying problem for my parent's computer. My dad was typing a normal document in Microsoft Word (OS is XP with System Pack 2, and it is Word 2002) and he said that just yesterday for the first time, after typing for maybe a half hour, a window would pop up with a "runtime error" and it would freeze untill he clicked ok on it, and it would then shut down loosing all his work that he didn't save.

So I got on the computer and opened Microsoft Word, and was able to duplicate the problem time after time but not every single time. When I simply open word, then click to close Word, the box appears, and he verified it is the same box he saw. It says exactly as follows, no more, no less, and every time reads the same -

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program:C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office 10\WINWORD.EXE
abnormal program termination

So I tried to research it, and came across a fix on Microsoft's support site saying remove something called COM Add-ins. I did so by following each step removing the one COM add in i found, and it did not resolve the problem at all. It still errors out. SO I grabbed the master disk and un... Read more

Answer:Solved: Microsoft Word keeps throwing up "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library" Error, Arghh!

First, welcome back!!! (although, vaguely, it's like seeing your cousin after many years at a funeral...nice to see you, sorry about the circumstances....)

I have decided to try to fix a problem on my computer with the Microsoft Fix It thing that Microsoft lets us use. Unfortunately, it not only did nothing for my problem (Which I no longer care about), but it did something to Microsoft Works Word Processor, the one that comes with windows. I already tried a system restore, but I've had it for too long so my restore didn't go back far enough.

The error itself says, "Works cannot access one or more files it needs to run the Word Processor. The files may have been renamed, deleted, or moved. Try reinstalling Works, and then starting the program again." Unfortunately I don't know if it has actually been moved or deleted and I don't know how to reinstall it. Any help would be great.

Answer:Microsoft Fix It messed up Microsoft Word.

If it came with Vista, it may be in Control Panel>Programmes and Features with the Windows Components list opened. You might be able to repair it that way. Failing that, if you had a Vista DVD or made a recovery set of your own, see if that can help.

I have enjoyed playing this Microsoft Links 2003 game for many years. Initially in Vista and then upgraded to Win 8 where I played it successfully. Since buying my new Dell Inspiron computer with a Win 10 operating system I am able to download the game but then when I try to start it I find that I can't open the programme and play it..

Answer:Microsoft 10 and Microsoft Links 2003

Does it give any kind of error or does it just not start?

Try running it in Windows XP compatibility mode by right clicking on the shortcut then selecting "Properties". Go to the Compatibility tab, check the box next to "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows XP. Checking "Run this program as administrator" in the same tab might help as well.

Keep in mind that that game is almost 13 years old, so it may just not be compatible anymore.

Help!! I tried to put a cd in that would give me Microsoft Works along with my Microsoft 98 programs that I already have on my computer. I guess I did not do it correctly because the different microsoft 2000 programs did not install completely on my computer. When I went to delete them off I can not get ms word 2000 deleted and my orininal ms word 98 back. I now have no ms word in programs. I do have the ms word 2000 installation first page that keeps coming up and I can't delete it from the system. I went into my computer, add/delete program. I still can not get the ms works 2000 programs off my computer. PLease let me know what to do.

Thank You Florence Hayes [email protected]

Answer:Can't get microsoft 2000 off and my microsoft 98 back

I'm afraid you're going to have to give us better information.

You mention Microsoft 2000 and Microsoft 98. Neither of these are operating systems or programs. One might want to assume that you're talking about MS Office 2000 and MS Windows 98, but we cannot be sure.

We need you to differentiate and give us the complete name of the program(s) and/or operating system(s) of which you're speaking.

For Windows version, double-click your MyComputer icon and then hit the help dropdown menut and About Window XX...it should tell you the exact version of Windows that you're using.

If you don't know what version of Office and/or Works you're using, you can do Start-Find (or Start-Search), Files or Folders and type in the following (no spaces!):

winword.exe,msworks.exe

and hit Find now (or Search now). When they have been found, right-click them, hit Properties. You should have a Versions tab. Tell us what version it reports for these files.

Stick with it and we will get there.

(PS: Word 98 only runs on a MAC computer. Do you have a MAC? If so, all of my instructions might be bad, they're really intended for IBM-compatible computers.)
