Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

Question: Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

Hey there...ok...I have some files that are saved from the Macs at school...when I take them home to my PC (Win) they don't have the extensions on them...when I originally save something from Windows and take it to a Mac and modify and save it then take it back to my PC it still has the extension and keeps it since it was added by Windows...

So I am wondering something...is there a program for Windows that recognizes Mac files and andds the extensions back??? I hate when I start work on some things at school and have to add the extensions to all the stuff I created when I take it back home...my guess is the Macs store the extensions or what the file opens up with or whatever in their "._(filename)" files...that's annoying too...for every file you have another is created with a "._"...

Any help on this??? THANX

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Files saved from Macs don't have ext.'s when read on Win. Need sftwre 2 read & convrt

I've never had that problem. If you save it as a "xxx" type document it doesn't matter if you have the software that created it on both Mac and PC (or software that can read the format) so I don't know how/what is going on with your situation.

BTW my experience is with using Word (forgot which version but it's on OS X) on a Mac and OpenOffice on my PC.

Compaq Presario running W98SE. Saved my mp3 files by burning to CD's using DeepBurn. Did Full System Restore, finally able to replace things. Reinstalled MusicMatch Jukebox without problem. Have repopulated music library with first saved CD, about 150 tunes, about 1000 to go. Good news is that all 150 came through and are playable. Bad news is that they all are showing as "Read Only" which means that MMJB won't allow me to amend the track tags. Is this (admittedly small) problem resolvable?

Answer:Saved mp3 files are "Read Only"

Update: I kind of figured out how to solve the problem...went to an individual mp3 file, right clicked to Properties and unchecked the "Read Only" box and checked the "Archive" box. (I was brave on this only because I picked a tune that I have on a store-bought CD). Went back to MusicMatch and now I can change the track tags! But now the question is do I have to do this on 1000+ files, or is there a way to batch this chore?

I am putting all my digital pictures from my new digital camera onto CD and it is all going fine, I can view them all as a slideshow. But I have a problem. They are all saved as 'Read Only', so I can't transfer them back to my hard drive if I want to.Is there any way of making them NOT Read Only, and to avoid this when saving to CD in future?DRiM

Answer:CD Files saved as 'Read Only'

I regularly copy my digital pictures to CD-R for safe keeping. They are always "read-only".If I need to, I copy them back to a folder on my hard drive, and change the attribute by removing the tick against "read-only". To do this, after copying the picture file(s) to your new folder, right click on a picture, then choose "properties", and remove the "read-only" tick.

cant read wordpad and notepad

Answer:i cant read my saved files in wordpas

What happens when you try to read them? Is it an error message or do the documents just come out as gibberish? Assuming they haven't become corrupted in some way, are you sure they are .txt documents (which, for all intents & purposes, is all that Notepad can handle)? Check the suffix and if you haven't got any other word processors on your system, try opening them on another computer."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." Pink Floyd

Answer:XP will not read files saved in win98

Hi, if Windows XP has been formatted as NTFS file system, then it will not be able to read Win 98 files, Win 98 is formatted as FAT32. I don't know if there are any programs that will convert your Win 98 files to NTFS, but it worth checking.

You right click what you want eliminated, select moveonboot and it offers you choices. You'd select remove on the next reboot.

Wrote and sent an e-mail and saved ie Save As.Which was saved to my documents via Word. When I open Word and try to read e-mail its all in code. Question, is it possible to read as the original?RegardsNoels

Answer:Can't read saved e-mail

It will be in .eml format unless you are talking about an attachment in .doc format that you saved. This could also present problems as Office 2007 uses .docx documents which are not compatible with older versions of Word.

Dear All,

I am currently facing this problem with both Firefox and IE -->

"rar.part could not be saved, because the source file could not be read"

it doesn't matter which type of files (.avi or .mkv and so on) I tried to download, but this problem keep on showing up.

It happens only to my this recently bought computer and I tried it with my old computer, downloading using the same link but everything is ok......

Could anyone please help?? I am sure it is not my ISP problems but my computer problem, and I am living in a student hostel and connect my LAN cable to the hostel's network adapter.
Thank you......

I have really messed up this time. I use Win 2000 with OE6 & NAV. I was trying to see why my Windows Explorer said I had 56 MB of stuff in my Deleted emails folder although it showed no messages when I viewed the folder. I used Notepad to open the Deleted.dbx file & there was indeed a large amount of data there. I tried deleting the data but & ultimately ended up erasing the data and re-saving the file. It didn't seem to do anything to the size of the file.

The problem is that now when I look at my Inbox (which I didn't intentionally touch) I only see emails that have come in since I messed with that Deleted folder. All of my older emails are missing. The good news is that the Inbox.dbx still shows a large amount of data so I hope they can be recovered. My best guess is that I have changed the encoding into something that OE can't read. The readable OE folders show ISO encoding; when I re-saved the Deleted folder it didn't offer ISO so I tried ANSI. I have already tried resaving some test files in the other options offered under Notepad but no luck

Please, please tell me how can I recover my older Inbox items & get back to where I was this morning.

I have to admit that I am struggling with Windows 10. I prefer Win XP, I'm used to Windows 7 but I'm stuck with Windows 10. At the age of 75 change does not go down too well. For weeks I've been having trouble with Firefox not saving settings, losing it's history, ignoring changes I make with about:config and today I've noticed that the AppData folder is set to readonly. I take ownership of the folder, I remove the readonly setting but then the "apply" button is greyed out when I check I find that the folder is still set to readonly. I've tried restricting what I'm doing to just the Mozilla folder, the result is the same, after taking off the readonly attribute the "apply" button is greyed out. I have very little hair left, what I have is rapidly disappearing. I would very much appreciate any help that some kind soul may be able to provide.

Answer:Firefox settings not being saved - AppData folder is read only

This belongs in the Browsers and Email section.

Do an on-line search for "Firefox does not save settings" (without the quotation marks.) There is plenty of advice available; once you have found that, but are still having problems, then return here with specific questions as to how to proceed, etc.

hey, my computer generally reads disks, music cd's, dvd's, and games (new like sims 3, and old like theme hospital and shogun total war)

ive just got anno 2070 and put in the disk, but its not recognizing it at all, when i first put the disk in, it whirs, as it knows there is a disk there, and a disk icon appears next to the cursor, but then nothing, no disk appears in My computer, and when i click on the drive it asks me to insert a disk, i have tested the disk on a different computer running vista, anno 2070 runs perfectly, and also says it does run on windows 7, i have also tested other disks since putting the game into the windows 7 computer, which work fine, and checked whether the disk can be read in a virtual machine (windows xp in this case), which it cant as i expected, i have run the Microsoft disk checker and all it said was that the disk was unreadable, but the vista computer proves it is readable.

any tips on what to do next? i really want to get playing this
thanks

Answer:dvd drive wont read specific disk, will read on other vista computer

I would think that your optical drive and that particular brand DVD media don't go together well. ( I have an Imation DVD+R DL that my Samsung drive only reads at times but not most of the time. On four other drives - a Sony, a Liteon, an Asus and a Plextor - the media is recognised and accessible without any problems. The Samsung drive is clean, has the latest firmware, can read and write other DVD media. So where am I? )

You may just try cleaning the lense with a Lense Cleaner CD. If it does not help, try burning anno 2070 to another known-to-be-good brand media at a lower speed.

Answer:Hard Drive canNOT Be Read, Computer won't boot. Read Error

Hi malpert and welcome to the TechSpot Forum

As a laptop only has the ability to support 1 harddrive your option is to remove the drive from the laptop and connect it to a desktop PC using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor and try to read the files on it, however I would download the test tools from the makers website and run a thorough test on the drive to ensure readability of the drive.

Remember though if the drive has failed mechanically then any data may be lost and you will need to use one of the professional data recovery services such as "ontrack data recovery" to get it back.

Backup, backup and backup is the mantra when it comes to important data...

When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

Answer:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

Hi, I'm sort of new to forums, but I have a bit of a pickle, I have a red shield with a white x in it that resembles the windows defender icon in my system tray, when I hover over it it says "Your computer is infected !" When clicked it pops up a window saying: "would you like to update your security software and download registry cleaner?" and occasionally a ballon pops out of the system tray saying "Windows has detected spyware infection which corrupted the registry. It is recommended to load update to prevent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date software for you. Click here to protect your computer."

I followed all the directions in the read & run me first thread, and nothing seemed to help, I'm attaching all the logs except counterspy as I couldn't find a way to get it to output a log in text format or anything, it said 0 malware found in everything except in my cookies there was 2 that it deleted.

again any help anyone could offer would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe there is dust on the lens of the CD/DVD drive so I recommend cleansing the lens.

Further you should try to remove the upper and lower filters in registry. This does often solve with the CD/DVD drive so check the workaround on the Microsoft website:

In worst case the CD/DVD drive must be replaced :(

Ok I just spent about three hours looking in this forum to solve my problem and no dice.

Here it goes: I'm running xp pro and I have a Norcent RW-481 48x12x48 CDRW probably not the best brand but oh well. I'm using Nero 6, InCD is not installed.

The problem: It does not recognize any data CD's or any CD's that the drive itself writes. I can play an audio CD, which elimates (I think) that the read lense is dirty and I can burn a CD, which elimates (I think) that my burn lense is dirty. I'm mentioning dirty lenses because a post in this forum suggested that a dirty lense may be the problem. So, before taking things apart I wanted to post in the forum the problem. Any other suggestions of what else I can look for?

More info: I even switched around the jumpers from cable select to master, same result.

I really believe I have a setting wrong in my XP pro operating system. Any suggestions????? :cronfused:

Lastly, The drive is recognized corectly in device manager

Answer:Outlook 2003: not marking read items as read

Outlook Express has a tab to fix this-maybe Outlook has the same.
TOOLS/OPTIONS/tab READ
check Mark Messages READ after displaying (add 5 seconds)

Maybe that seconds number has been raised above the time you take to scan messages. OE doesnt care IF you peek at a message-it cares HOW long you stare at it.

Hello everyone. I've recently reinstalled Windows 7 (two, three days ago) and I'm having a problem with my World of Warcraft Addons. I'm thinking the problem is due to parts of my World of Warcraft folder being read only. In the Properties menu of the folder, the "read only" check box is not checked but filled in with a little blue square. Now being a windows noob I'm not 100% sure, but I'm assuming that means it's read only. So I unchecked the box, pressed okay but if I open the Properties window again, it's still got the little blue box.

I've ran a few virus/malware scanners, and I don't seem to have anything. I've installed all of the Windows updates and I'm still having the same problem.

Thanks in advance everybody!

Answer:Read only folders revert back to read only

By default all folders with Files in them, the properties are Read Only (Only applies to Files in Folder) Meaning that if the actual file within the folder isn't Read Only, the rest of it isn't either. (test this theory on any other folders on your computer) so that is not your problem with WoW

Answer:my sdhc card won't read. I used to read just fine.

Throw card away & buy a new one. They wear out eventually and the camera is more tolerant of a worn card than Windows is.

Running Win7Pro 64-bit. Am unable to open older Office 97 files with Office2003 which is installed and running fine. I found a couple of files here and elsewhere with .reg extensions that were supposed to make the necessary registry changes. eg. "UnlockWord.reg" and a more elaborate-looking "office security.reg". All that happens when I left-click on the file and thenleft-click on "Run" is the files opens in Notepad and has no effect.

What do I need to do to have the .reg files change the registry to Unblock my Word97 files ?

Answer:.reg files open Notepad - do not change registry to read older files

Hello SausalitoWalt, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Double check in Default Programs to make sure that the reg file extension is set to have it's Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again to see if it will now.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hello,

First time on this forum, so I hope I chose the right category to post my problem. I just got a new laptop, and it has Vista Home Premium.

My problem.. I use a program/application called "DVArchive" (aka: DVA) for archiving my tv shows on my PC (from my ReplayTV). This application worked just fine on XP, but of course, Vista is giving me all kinds of crap.

The application IS working.. It can see my ReplayTV unit, I can access my archived shows, etc. However, Vista is giving me error messages, which are interfering with it and making it crash.

The problem has to do specifically with the applications configuration (.XML) files. I'm pretty tech saavy, but I'm not a computer expert, so I'll just cut and paste the actual error messages below. The listed pathways are where DVArchive stores it's files...

First of all, I want to point out that I have very little knowledge of technology.

I have a NTFS Seagate 2TB Go Flex Desk external hard disk drive. A couple months ago, I found that it had a problem where my laptop could detect it, but couldn't access it and needed to "reformat" it. I left it alone for a while.

Recently, I tried plugging it in again, and behold, it seemed to work okay and I could see all the files and so on. I tried chkdisk without the fixing part (/f). I didn't want to "fix" it until as last resort because it seems to imply some data will be lost. It said there were a lot of bad sectors.

I couldn't read some of the files (most of them were rar files) in my hard disk, and had "read error" and "data error (cyclic redundancy check)". So I basically moved all the files which were normal out of the disk as I couldn't move the others ("can't read from source file or disk") and now I'm left with the broken files, most of which are important. 40gb of 16,000 files.

Is there any hope for me to recover those files? Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: after this, how would I deal with the bad sectors?

Answer:Disk read error for files in the harddrive, want to recover files.

OK! The bad sectors are always one of the killers of data on a hard drive. Thats why we are always asked to back up our needed data at least on two separate drives. So, in the future, you should learn to keep at least two copies of your important data on separate drives or locations.
But, right now, since your drive still could be read on your computer, you could try to run some data recovery programs to take chances. Nowadays, many data recovery programs are developed to help people resolve these troubles.

But, if you are not sure, you could firstly try some drive data recovery freeware such as Recuva, TestDisk and iCare Data Recovery Free, etc.
But, if any data recovery software could not make a difference, you could consult a data recovery expert for help and prepare enough money for it.

Good luck!

Ok, earlier I asked about this but still got question/s.I was told that because I transfered my older works suite files to new machine this is the reason I am promted with read-only.Ok, is it ok if I simply just un-tick the Read-Only properties box of each file and apply the change because the only other way is to Re-name and re-save all the files which name changing is going to be a real pain.

Hey all,
Well, I had some how downloaded av.exe and have had nothing but problems. I even had AVG running at the time and it missed it some how. I used a restore point and that seemed to get rid of it, or so I thought. Unfortunately, I lost Microsoft Excel and Word. I don't know how, but the shortcuts go no where. Then today (three days later) I started getting Windows Antivirus popups again... or was it Microsoft? I forget... but I knew it was av.exe. So, I tried another restore and when it rebooted, AVG found av.exe this time. I removed it and not even internet explorer worked. I then did a full restore and this time I got Internet explorer working.
So, since the last time (a few years back) that I had a virus, you guys really helped, I came here and searched for av.exe (as it's still in the system). I found a thread referring the OP to the READ ME FIRST thread, which was what you referred me to last time too. I started following it and got to running Super Antispyware. I ran it and it found two locations of av.exe. Unfortunately, I didn't make a note of where as the directions stated to reboot and then go to preferences and copy the log. Well, the program is gone after the reboot. The shortcuts are there as are the start menu items. But when I click on any of them I get a popup
"C:\Program Files\SUPERAntiSpyware\SUPERAntiSpyware.exe

Tried doing a search for this and came up empty. My problem in a nutshell is that I'm having difficulty reading data CD's. I was re-installing my OS due to too much corruption of data and viruses so I'm start from a scratch in terms of OS files.

To be noted: Manufacturer's install disks used ghost to install a new copy of the OS. Had to open and close the CD drive bay a few times in order to get the final CD be able to be read and complete the installation.

What I've tried:
update driver - no improvement
Uninstall Drivers and restart - no improvement
manually download driver - no improvement
tried using generic CD Drivers - no improvement

Specs:
OS: Windows XP home.
Downloaded all updates. inc: SP2
Emachine T3065
Memory: 2GB
CPU: 3 GHZ

After browsing around google for a while, I came across a similar problem which suggested the cabling might be the cause of the error. as audio/video are past through different pars of the cable than data.

Any help is appreciated.

Answer:Can't read data cd. can read audio

Ignore the cable issue, that's unlikley to be the problem
Analog audio is on a different cable, but thats seldom used by any PC these days.

The clus here is that it was dying at the end of the install by the sound of it. The laser output may have decreased to the extent that audio only is recognised due to the better reflectivity.

Start thinking about a new drive, but you would have checked all the cables anyway one assumes?

Windows 98SE
Sony DDU 1621 dvd rom

I need a simple explanation that tells me how to get my dvd rom to read data disks. It only reads audio disks and opens all disks in Windows media player. I dont understand how associations work.

Help would be much appreciated

Carolyn

Answer:DVD Rom will only read audio....how do I get it to read data?

No it doesnt read dvd's, but I am not really concerned about that, I dont think I have the memory anyway (64 mb ram). My old cdrom had a mechanical problem and I needed something to read disks, so I bought it from a garage sale and I downloaded the software from the Sony site. It used to function normally and read data files.

I want to format the harddrive and I need to know that the dvd rom will read my win98 disk cos it isnt at the moment. I dont understand how to do anything in file types.....is where the problem lies? Or is it in the cdrom properties settings area.

Hope this triggers something in you........I appreciate your help

I have some older DVD-R that I had burned data on a few years ago. My Optical Drive on my main PC can't read them. but a drive on a different PC can read them fine.

My main PC can read all regular DVDs (i.e. movies) just fine. I cleaned the lens, deleted the "up/down" registry entries as recommended. Still no solution.

the only hint I have the explorer shows that drive with a symbol of 2 people (see attachment). not sure if this stands for some group policy.

All the data were burned with a different DVD-writer in Germany (some 9 years ago). i don't think it is a region setting issue since this DVD-drive can read original DVDs from all regions. But there may be another clue?
I read about how DVD-R degrade over time... but since my other PC can read them that likely is not the problem.

The only thing I haven't done that was suggested was the realignment. First, I never dropped it (it has been in my PC for years and that didn't move). Second, it seems to read normal DVDs fine. It was suggested if re-alignment really is necessary, other things are out of whack and buying a new one may be better.
I could buy a new one, but also don't want to be defeated by the machine. and the problem coudl be related to windows....

Answer:can't read burned DVD-R, but can read normal DVD

It is possible the DVD-R may be incompatible with your drive. You can search online for a firmware update for the drive. You can re-write to a compatible DVD-R on your other machine perhaps.

well i have run into a problem with scanning and cleaning steps: 1 a/b
on the " READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal" post. first of all i dont have a softwear antivirus program (yet) so i usually use trend micro. anyways i cannot run trend's scan in normal opperating mode. i just get errors, a AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: msvcrt.dll
ModVer: 6.1.9844.0 Offset: 00001d90 error to be exact. after that IE restarts and im back to about blank. the virus couldent be doing that could it? then on further i cant access any explorer window. period. it also creates arrors and restarts explorer. in safe mode i was actually able to get trend micro to work and it found 22 some odd junk files (dlls i think) that i keep finding in my prossesses list. to put it this way, i have been going back and fourth between apm, the cleaner, and about blaster to remove these junk prosseses and they just come back with with what seems to be randomly generated names. back on point, i could not get symantec's online scan to work at all in safe mode. the applet (dont know what else to call it) just hangs there for along time till it come up not avalable.
im planning to put an old version of norton AV and getting all the updates the doing a full scan to see what happens. would agv AV work also? on the same note, cwshredder has come back with nothing everytime ive used it

Just continue completing all the steps in the READ ME FIRST as best as possible. Note any problems along the way but don't bother coming back until all steps are finished. I'll include the READ ME in the steps below. Finish everything and post your HijackThis log at the end.

Please follow the steps below:

- Run ALL the steps in this Sticky thread READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal

Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.

- Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.
After doing ALL of the above you still have a problem make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps below:

- Download HijackThis 1.99.1

- Unzip the hijackthis.exe file to a folder you create named C:\Program Files\HJT

- Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file.

- Before running HijackThis: You must close each of the following:your web browser, e-mail client, instant messenger, and programs like notepad, wordpad, MS Word etc. And any other unnecessary running programs.

- Run HijackThis and save your log file.

Hello all ,

I bought yesterday new dvd-Rw (samsung sh-s223 ) because the old one (old about 1,5 years)have problem with reading dvd,cd.I installed it and it is working worse than the old one.System recognize both devices but when I load some DVD it tries to read it and when it cant read it the window(or whole win 7)freeze,or new device become invisible to system till the next start up.And what is odd is that when I load on boot win 7 or Xp disk it read them with no problem!?
I applied the differnent solutions, namely removing the filters, but this does not work.
I have traveled the forum, and I think I have not found a problem similar to mine.

I have to install win 7 again or ther(s another solution ?

Any help would be appreciated .

Thank you !

After burning a DVD today on my Micro Solutions DVD-/+RW I could suddenly no longer read DVDs on that Drive. I have no idea what happen. At first I thought the drive was gone, but I put a CD in it and it reads it just fine.

I uninstalled the driver and the associated programs (i.e. powerDVD etc) and then reinstalled them and then re-did the UDB connection to the computer - it auto-detected it, and then said new device ready to use (using XP by the way). Still didn't work for DVDs, just CDs. I also updated the driver - still nothing.

Under my computer it is listed as a DVD-/+RW, so I cannot understand why it won't play DVDs, just CDs. It's as if the ability to play/burn DVDs has suddenly be locked out.

Any help would be extremely appreciated! Thank you.

Answer:DVD-RW suddenly cannot read DVDs, can read CDs

Update:

The device manager says it's working properly.

The problems occured after attempting to erase a DVD+RW using Deepburner. Basically I burnt a DVD and then tried out Deepburner to see if it would erase the DVD+RW. When I attempted to eject the DVD it wouldn't eject- the green light just kept flashing a couple times. Eventually I had to turn my PC off and unhook the USB connection and power connection and then do everything back up and restart the computer. Finally the DVD would eject, but since then will not read any DVDs, just CD's and CD-ROM.

The model is an external (USB) Micro-Solutions 2244010 (but really a NEC_DVD-RW, ND-1300A).

I updated the firmware to 1.0A about 6 months ago. I never had a single problem with this drive before or after updating the Firmware.

I really have no idea how or why this could have happened. I can play the DVDs in my other DVD drive just fine.

Please help.

Hello, I recently installed a game which came on a DVD disk
The install had a few problems, and it needed to restart several times. (It looked as though it was unable to read the disc, which resulted in a failed install)
Eventually it installed and all was fine.
The game needs a disc check to start up, and so it must be able to read the DVD before the game can start. It was able to read it, and I quit and restarted the game several times with no problems. However, I tried another game restart and the launcher could NOT read the DVD ("no disk in drive" error). I re-inserted the disc and it worked.

Later, I had the same trouble multiple times. It worked one final time, but I later tried to start the game (and thus read the disc) and it refused to acknowledge a disc was in the drive. I restarted, I removed filters by editing the registry, I uninstalled the DVD drive drivers and even tried blowing air into the drive. I have also tried microsoft's "fix it" software for the drive. None of these methods resolved the problem.

The drive cannot read any other DVDs either (opening them from "computer" just opens the disk tray and states there is no disc in the drive)
The drive IS able to read CDs, which obviously means something (I'm not sure if there are two different lasers or something?)
For this reason I'm leaning towards a software fault, but I don't know what to do to remedy it.

The drive in question: TSSTcorp DVD+RW TS-H653F AT... Read more

Answer:DVD RW drive will not read DVDs (But will read CDs)

My CD-RW drive broke, and Dell replaced it with a new one for free (warranty).

However, the new drive is 48x read but the old one was 52x read. Will this have an impact on anything?

Also, I have 52x CD-R's. Will they work in a 48x drive?

Answer:Solved: Difference between 48x read and 52x read?

There will be no noticeable difference on anything. Chances are that the old one rarely, if ever, actually read at 52.

The 52x on the CD-R's is a measure of their sensitivity and shows the maximum speed that they can be written. Some CD's have a minimum as well, and that is usually more important if they are "high-speed" CD-R's since they won't write properly at very slow speeds. But your CD-R's will write fine at speeds between 4x and 52x, as a minimum range, so there is nothing to worry about.

Ok, on my forum one of the members asked "I just got 2 new sticks of kingston ddr400 C2.5, can I keep the old one also or do I have to get rid of it?"

Since the old stick is kingstong ddr400 C3, I said ya just put the two new sticks into the ddr slots and put the old stick in the single slot.

my mod says:
"Only issue I can see is the different clock cycles, may get read errors. try it and if it starts acting funny, take the original one out. if the prob goes away, then choose which set you want to stay with."

I disagree with him, what do ya'll think? I said maybe it would if you were changing out different brands and timings, or using a brand that the mobo isn't exactly compatible with.. In that case you'd get more than a "read" error.. Anyways, since it's using the C3 in the single slot and not along side of another DDR stick, I think it'll be fine..

Any suggestions or ideas ?

This sound like a drive lens cannot calibrate properly and therefore the drive cannot read from the CD disks.

I built a PC back in January and its been running great ever since.  Never had any hangups, freezes, or other issues with the build.  Two weeks ago my computer froze unexpectedly and upon restart I received a disk read error.  I tried several tips on the internet to fix it, and eventually the HDD stopped being detected by even the BIOS.  I bought a new HDD and reinstalled vista 64 ultimate and it's been running fine for about a week.  After receiving the disk read error again I updated my BIOS and it seemed to fix the problem for a few days.  Last night it happened again.I've read that this could be caused by a bad HDD, issues with Vista, bad memory, or an overheating issue.  When I run SpeedFan and other temp tools, my computer runs at max at 45-50C under load.  My PSU is still cool, as are all of the components within the case.It starts to freeze in WoW, but at random intervals.  It might be an hour, it might be 4 hours before I have any issues.  I've also had the problem when the computer was idling in vista.  I check the temperature of the system regularly while playing my games, and I doubt that is the issue. As this is a clean HDD with a clean install of vista and runs cool, I'm beginning to think it may be a memory issue.  The following are my system components:   Operating System: Windows Vista? Ultimate (6.0, Build 6001) Service Pack 1    Language: English (Regional Set... Read more

Answer:I have read the 'pre read' stuff... and still have adware..

If you have run ALL the steps in < READ ME FIRST BEFORE ASKING FOR SUPPORT: Basic Spyware, Trojan And Virus Removal > then you should read the tutorial in this Sticky thread NO HIJACK THIS LOG FILES BEFORE READING THIS: HJT Tutorial & LOG File Posting

Now post a HijackThis log file as an attachment to your message. All running programs should be closed, including your web browser, e-mail. Close before running Hijack This!

Do NOT run Hijack This from the Desktop, a temp folder, or a sub-folder of C:\Documents and Settings, or choose to run it directly from the downloaded ZIP file. Place it in its own folder, for example C:\Program Files\HJT

Make sure you have HJT version 1.98.2 and follow the guidelines on where to install it and how to post a log as an attachment.

i was bout to burn a cd today and my cd drive says insert a cd, so i try about 3 other cds, and then i tested to see if it would read cds at all and it wouldnt.i think it might have somthing to do with a virus

i noticed that my norton antivirus wasnt in the taskbar, so i open it up and it doesnt have auto protect on(and it wont let me turn it on and i cant reinstall either sicne the drive wont work), i scanned for virus and ran adaware too but same old problem--- it wont read nor write.....

my operating system is Windows XP

burner name is: CD-R/CD-RW CW079D

Might not matter but firmware version:11SJ

somone please help

Answer:CD BURNER won't read or write..PLEASE READ

A virus may be at work.....you may need to reinstall Norton AV.

If you have a fast internet connection (broadband), run an online virus scan at TrendMicro. Make sure to select the Autoclean option. Otherwise, make sure your antivirus program has the latest definitions and run a full system scan.

I got down to the step where I ran shownew.bat, but got this error message.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
C:\PROGRA~1\Symantec\S32EVNT1.DLL An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

I have the other requested scans, and I'll attach them to this post and the next. I have been having various issues and can't seem to get rid of them, even after running the various scans. I have HijackThis already installed, but I read that you requested that we downloaded from you link...should I uninstall, and then reinstall?

Thanks in advance for your time, guys.

Used files and settings wizard to copy files to external hard drive. Then did a clean install to fix a hard disc problem. When trying to restore settings the transfer wizard would not read/find the old computer file. Help in unlocking Mig file would be appreciated.

Answer:can not read MIG files in xp

Copy from external drive to Desktop or Documents folder on local hard drive first. Windows can sometimes be a bit wary of allowing you to perform some wizard-driven tasks if the files required are on an external drive.

I'm dual-booting Windows 7 and Windows XP, and everything on my XP drive is read-only in Windows 7. I've searched on this issue, and read a bit, and the information I've found so far is very dis-heartening.

Do I seriously have to take ownership of all my old files? This is incredibly stupid. And what effect does this have if I boot in XP? Do I then have to tell XP to re-take ownership of everything?

I can't believe how absurd this is and really hope it doesn't make it into the final release. I've run into minor issues similar to this with XP installations, but only with user directories, and only when XP was set to protect each user's files. Every single file I try and access is read-only - this is insanity! What has XP/Win7 done with the NTFS ACL?

Answer:All files from XP read-only... seriously??

You won't necessarily have to take ownership, although that remains the best way of doing things.

What you can do is boot into Windows 7, edit the security of the specific folders you want to access, and add your Windows 7 username with Full Access credentials. Make sure that those Full Access credentials are correctly propagated to files and subfolders.

Now, when you boot into XP, it should show up as an "Unknown User", but you should have access to those files anyway from within Windows 7.

Still, it's the better option to rather take ownership and dump XP altogether. If you really must still use XP, have you looked into Windows XP... Read more

With my old PC and win 98se I made a backup copy of an audio disc, which win98se reads as .wav files.
I now have a new system running win xp, which reads the files on the same cd as .cda. Anyone know why?
I'd like to write a compilation for the car from several discs and would like to see them in .wav format. How can I change the way winxp sees them?
Thanks

Answer:.wav files read as .cda

It only sees them as .cda on the disk? If you copy it to the hard drive does it see it as .wav? .cda in a CD Audio Track Shortcut.

Question: mp3 files not read

Can anyone tell me why, all of sudden, whenever I insert a CD-R containing mp3 music files it is not automatically read and recognized? I never had this problem until very recently. Previously, I would simply insert a CD-R and, after several seconds, a box would appear onscreen telling me that the mp3 files were ready to access. Now, however, I put a CD-R in and nothing at all happens. I can't figure out what the difference is. Perhaps I need to change a setting. I feel that there should be a simple solution. Thank you.

I want to know if there somekind of utility to let me read txt or rtf files on my old gateway laptop computer without booting the operating sytem, i've heard of some bootable floppy disks with full interfaces so why cant it be done to view txt's?

Answer:How to read txt & rtf files without OS ??

To the best of my knowledge, the text editor can be used offline, if you go to File> Work offline. However you can't get there unless you boot the computer. You don't need an internet connection . Doc is Word and rtf is Wordpad- both available through the operating system.

I have a Desktop PC Windows XP. It came without a DVD drive. I recently bought an external DVD-R drive - USB 2.0 plug in. My system only has a 1.1 (or something like that), so until I get a 2.0 card and install it, performace is a bit impaired - DVD movies play jerkily and the sound has gaps, but it's ok. I can pause movies and make stills ,etc. just fine.

Anyway, my question is - a friend sent me a DVD-R he made on his Mac G5 with picture files he scanned and burned onto it. I'm getting - "Windows cannot read from this disk. It might be corrupted or using a format that is not compatible with Windows." I'm obviously assuming it's the Mac formatting it can't read.

I downloaded a trial version of "MacOpener 2000 v.6.05", but when I tell it to select the DVD Drive ("E"), it tells me "The drive cannot be formatted, It may be a Network Drive or a CD-ROM."

Does anyone know of any software or other means that will enable me to read these files?

Thanks.

can not open rw disks to read. How do I alter Xp to allow Re-writable cds to be edited. It says "Disks and files are read only"

Answer:Read only files in XP

The way I do it, is copy the files to a folder on the hard disk.Highlight them all by pressing 'ctrl+A'. Right click and then click properties.Untick the box that says 'Read only' and tick the box that says 'Archive'.You can then alter them to your hearts desire and, if need be, put them back to disk.

Question: Read Only Files

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition. Most of my folders on the "C" Drive are shown as "Read Only". I click on properties and untick "Read Only" and include all sub-folders but, they are "Read Only" again if I click on them again. This is preventing me from saving them to CD RW disk.I would be very grateful for any help in resolving this problem.

Answer:Read Only Files

You need to go right to the top of the folder tree hierarchy to make sure that "child" folders aren't inheriting the Read Only attribute from "parent" folders. If, after changing the setting, it reverts to Read Only, it is almost certainly because a folder further up is set as Read Only and this has been applied to all its sub-folders and files.

Question: Read Only Files

Can I delete read only files? Does it cost anything? if you can, how?

Answer:Read Only Files

That would depend on the files. If they're part of the O/S, it's probably not a good idea to delete them.

How about you tell us exactly the situation and the files in question. Also, where are they located?

Am I being really thick here? I thought that the whole point of re-writable CDs was that you could re-use the CD, deleting files and re-writing onto the CD as you could with a floppy. When I try to delete a no longer needed file (I am referring to text files, not music) I get the message "this is a read only file do you still want to delete" and I say "yes" and then I get a message saying "this is a read only file you cannot delete it". I know I can overwrite files. Am I doing something wrong at the initial "write files to CD" stage. Can I turn the "read only" off when I first copy the file?

Answer:Read Only files on CD

I get this too and here's what I do:If you read the CD from your DVD/CD drive it will say that your files are Read only because that drive is unable to delete it you have to put the RW/CD in your RW drive then you can do what you want with them.
