I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Does anyone know how to set the spell checker in Word 2007 to British English? It automatically reverts to US English when I change the setting.

Answer:British English spell check in Word 2007

right click on the the taskbar. highlight 'toolbar'. From the next menu click on 'language bar'. You should get a question mark with an option arrow on the right of it. Click on this and select settings. Click this and it will bring up a box showing what language is set as the default. Change it to English UK. If on the other hand there is a abriavation eg EN on the taskbar right click on it and another box will apear showing that there is more than one language you can use. Make sure English UK is set as the default. I had this problem when I first used Outlook 2007 ans I deleted all other languages other than English UK and this got rid of the problem.

Hi, this is the second time I have need help with this. I followed advice from first time to go to programmes, office, tools, language setting. Worked a treat and changed language from US to UK. But evertime i use spell check it reverts itself back to US spelling.Any ideas how to stop this?Cheers

Answer:change word spell check to UK from US

I had the same probs. Go into Word, look down at the very bottom toolbar (sitting on the start bar), which displays stuff like Page 1 etc. Go along to the right, you'll see 'English (U.S.)' Double click that. A new window will come up. At the top there'll be the option of U.S. and U.K. English. click U.K. and down the bottom click default. Click Yes. Then OK. There you are. I've got Word 2003,though, so if u don't, i'm not sure what to do (might be the same; try)

My spelling checker in WORD 97 keeps reverting to United States English. I set it to UK English in TOOLS/Language and have tried closing with "Set as default" and just "OK" but it immediately returns to US English. Studying the Help facility and a WORD 97 manual give no further information.Any ideas would be most welcome as it's so annoying to be told for example that Colour should be spelt Color!

My computer did not come with Microsoft Word so I installed it from a Microsoft Office 97 disk I have. It works fine except there is no spelling check function. On my old computer, it was the first choice on the tools pull down menu and it was a spelling and grammer check. On here now is only the grammmer check. It does show abc with a check mark next to the word grammer, but it doesn't correct spelling.

Any help on this one?

Hi all,
Earlier this year "Check Spelling as you type" in Word 2003 worked fine. Now it does not and the red wavy line does not appear under wrongly spelled words. (unless I click Spelling and Grammar first).
I have tried every suggestion on this web page with no luck.
The registry item named '1' mentioned in the article was missing.
It's a real mystery as the 'check spelling as you type' still works in PowerPoint and also in Windows Live Mail.
I can reactivate 'check spelling as you type' in a document If I choose to run a spell check via the 'Spelling and Grammar' icon on the toolbar or from the 'tools' menu item. Only then does 'check spelling as you type' begin working again for the current document.
I tried a system restore to June which is our earliest restore point for 2014. (I have restore points for 2012 but inexplicably none for 2013. I'd rather avoid going that far back in time)
I re-installed Microsoft Office 2003
any other ideas?

Answer:Word 2003 - 'Check Spelling as you type' no longer works correctly

You have have tried everything I would have. Unfortunately Microsoft no longer supports Office 2003 products. So you're not going to get much help from them. Office 2003 support ended the same time that XP support ended.

I have been having problems with the automatic spelling checker in MS Word (XP Pro version). Despite having set the default language to English (US), it keeps cycling through other languages, including French, which I have never used. Could this be a macro-virus or is it something simpler? Sorry for asking a Word question in the Wind 7 category, but applications were not listed in the topic list.
I edit engineering documents that contain the word "hole" hundreds of times.  The spell checker stops at every instance, stating it is a commonly confused word.  Is there a way to modify the commonly confused word list?  Unlike unconventional
spellings, there seems to be no way to add it to the dictionary as something that needn't be checked.
Thanks, Eric flyboy

Answer:MS WORD spell check question

The words in your custom dictionary are stored in:
CUSTOM.DIC, a .txt document
This is usually in the Program folder under MSOffice/Office.

I would assume you could save the file to disk, and then, when you reinstall Word, insert it in the appropriate folder.

Hey, a newbie with something to offer. I couldn't get Word spell check to work and I've tried every method offered by everybody. Well, i actually fixed it by going to the Microsoft site. I'm going to write it almost word for word since some people (like me) need to talked to as if we were kids!

1. The easiest way to fix it: Click on the OFFICE BUTTON (that's the multicolored square in the upper left corner).
2. Then click WORD OPTIONS which is at the bottom of the square.
4. If you see that 'HIDE SPELLING ERRORS IN THIS DOCUMENT' is checked, uncheck it.

The above is one of the first things people try. If that doesn't work, there's two more things you can try:

2. Click on WORD OPTIONS (just like above)
3. Click on ADD-INS
4. Click on MANAGE
5. If you see any item that says "disabled" and is related to spelling, try enabling them.

Okay, if it's still not fixed, this next step worked for me:

1. Close Word and all other programs
1. Click on START
3. Click on RUN
4. Click on OPEN and type the term regedit
5. Now, if the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override exists, delete it (that means delete that line)
6. Exit - hit the X button in the upper right corner
7. Restart your computer

Answer:word 2007 Spell check

I have Word 2007 (from Office Enterprise 2007) and I checked and it has two different versions of Dutch as language proofing options (Review / Proofing / Set Language). Perhaps you didn't install all the languages when you did the initial install and running it again to get the others will give you the option. Make sure you don't actually have it before you look for options or purchase add-ons that will provide it. If I have it, it seems likely that you do as well but just haven't found or installed it. I did not buy any special language options with the suite (unless Enterprise includes some that other suites don't - I'm not sure).

The Dutch Language pack for Office 2007 (much more than just the dictionary or just the Proofing Tools) can be purchased at: Microsoft Office Online. I could not find a free download of just the Proofing Tools for Dutch (in effect, the Dictionary as you are calling it) at Microsoft or on the web. But it's only about $25 so it's not that expensive if it will be so useful to you.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

It is because you have installed Microsoft Office - it's a well-documented problem and it used to be solved by changing the language in Outlook and then changing it back to English, but that doesn't seem to work these days, so the only other option is to install a different spell checker for Outlook Express. The problem is that we can't seem to be able to run a spell check on the document whilst it is locked. Is this unavoidable or is there some way around it? The person who created the document is new to macros so she has not guaranteed that she hasn't done something wrong when creating it.

"To check the spelling in messages

Outlook Express uses the spelling checker provided with the following Microsoft Office programs: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint. If you do not have one of these programs installed, the Spelling command is not available."

Now that stinks!!! The PC came with Word Perfect Office 2002. Is there another spell check I could load in to Outlook? Or any ideas where I can download a freebie Microsoft Word? Or do I just need to shut up and spend "Order Just Word 2002 ...
If you just need a copy of Word 2002, you can order it online. The prices* are: $229 US for new users "
(found at... )

Ouch $$$ !!!
Just wondering.

I did a spell check on a document part way through and there were no problems. Later when I spell checked the rest I found that it had completely failed to find really obvious spelling errors. If I ask it to do a further check using the ABC sybmbol or via the tools/options route it comes up with 'spell check complete' immediately.

:cry I am running XP-SP3 and recently upgraded from Office 2003 to Office 2007 Enterprise. Spell checker is working in all Office programs but Word. I have checked Word Options and Review Language and everything points to English-US. I have tried using just the main dictionary and not the custom.dic because when I look at the words in custom.dic there are only 2, but either way it simply won't spell check. I have found other blogs that say use REGEDIT and remove the override key in

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0

but I do not have that key in my registry.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions. :confused
This is really annoying!

Answer:Word 2007 Spell Check NOT working

Couple of options to check

1st is to open Word and click the Review tab then click in the Proofing group Set Language and in the box that opens, make sure that "Do not check Spelling or Grammer" is not ticked, if it is untick it.

then click the Default button to set this to your Normal.dotm file

2nd is from Words Options click the Resources tab option and then run Office Diagnostics, this is a repair option

3rd is that your Normal.dotm file which is the default layout of your Word docs, is corrupted so follow this to create a new one, follow the instruction in this MSFT KB from the part titled Global Template (Normal.dotm or to rename your current one, then restart Word to create a new one.

I have recently installed Microsoft Word 2007 and am having a problem with the spell checker. I have found other discussions of problems with the Word 2007 spell checker but mine is very specific.
When I set the default language in a document to UK EN (as opposed to US EN), the spell checker picks up words such as 'labour/labor' but does not pick up any words using a 'z' instead of an 's', e.g. organisation/organization. These always used to be highlighted in Word 2003 so why aren't they now?

Thanks for any advice.

In Word 2000, in one particular document, when I use spell check it uses French instead of English. I change the default language to English but it still uses French. Any other document uses English for spell check so it's something with this particular document. It's a document up on our network which I've opened from three different pc's with the same result. Any help would be appreciated.

Answer:Word 2000: Spell Check not working

Before changing the language, hit Ctrl-a to select everything.

Also, once you have spellchecked a document and accepted it, you must go to Tools-Options, Spelling and grammar tab, and hit Recheck Document to have it act as if it had not been previously spellchecked.

All of a sudden my spell check has stopped working. I am using Office 2007. I showed to the technical staff members of my university but none of them could figure out as to what could be the reason.

In fact, three times, we deleted (uninstalled) the Office 2007 from the laptop and then installed but it did not solve the problem.

Some one suggested that I have to reload operating system-XP again. I was wondering if there could be another way to solve this problem without re-installing XP.

Here is my situation- I want to be able to use both an english and Portuguese spell check on the same computer. I am currently using an enlish version of Word 2000 and hence an english spell check. I can select the Portuguese language in the drop down in Word, but all it does is -Not Underline- in red all the words that it doesn't recognize.

On another computer I have a Portuguese version of Word 2000 and it works just like its english counterpart (providing spelling error correction suggestions etc).

I have copies of both versions of Word.

I am not sure of the process of getting both "full packages" of spell check for the different languages to be accesible on the same computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Recently I have had to remove the SysProtect pop up/Vundo Virus...everything seemed fine.
Then as I was spell checking a letter in Microsoft Word 2003, it kept saying I had spelled several words wrong that I knew were correct. (I'm not a great speller, but I know how to spell "available")
Upon closer inspection I see the spell check is checking in FRENCH?
I can find a way to change it. I'm thinking it's a side effect of my recent virus woes.

I'm open to suggestion here.

Answer:MS Office Word 2003 Spell Check FRENCH???

There are two things you could Try. Open Word, go to Tools, Language, Set Language and make sure French isn't chosen.
Also click on start. all programs, Microsoft Office Tools, Microsoft Office Language Setting. Make sure your default version is set to English. We had a problem recently with Asian Typography being installed. We found once we removed all Asian languages from the Enabled Language window it solved our problem. Possibly you might need to remove French from there if it is showing up?
Hope this helps.

Hi nicki,
You have to turn it off in your control panel instead of within Word. You don't say what version of Windows you have, but in Windows 7, you can go to Start Button/Control Panel and then choose Hardware and Sound. Under Sound, select Change system sounds. Select Asterisk (obvious, right? ) and change the sound to none. Then hit apply and ok and the sound should be gone. Hope that helps.

hi. I can't get the word 2007 spellchecker to work in an important document I am editing. I want single digits that stand alone to get an underline (red or green, as if they were caught by spellcheck). So the number 24 would be fine, but just 7 or 0 would get an underline.

Example of what I'd like to get an underline: There are 7 people at the party.
What shouldn't get an underline: There are seven people at the party.
What also shouldn't get an underline: There are 77 people at the party.

Windows 2000 2003
Travels with file from computer to computer

Dictionary avail is only the system one.
The language options is only ENGLISH.
French is not even available for me to select.
I have a 4mb file with multiple headings, multiple topics, Thousands of hyperlinks.

I type status and info into each "topic" section, cut and paste from other files, and emails.

Hyperlind to file names.

I think it is related to a hyperlinked document name that starts with h3nnnn_-_all.pdf.

But, it will be checking spelling, and all of a sudden it will want to change normal english words to their French equivalent.

It complains there are too many spelling errors for it to check. I then created "my own library" to put all the technical terms in to reduce the number of errors. I put most of the english word errors that it wanted to convert to French into it, and that reduced the number of complaints, but it is amusing / annoying.

I cannot figure out how to find where the dictionary change is invoked within my file. Any ideas?

This might be related to my problem with the "too many edits problem" if that one is a heap problem. Don't know how to change the heap size of word 2000.

Answer:Word 2000 - Spell check switch between english and french on it's own

Hi Redsox2004,

Word documents, and different parts of a document, may be set in a different language (Tools / Set Language) than your default .

If you have copied from other documents then the copied text may be in another language.

You can set the text to not check spelling if it is causing you a problem, e.g. if you do not have the dictionary loaded for the language required. (same Tools / Set Language option).

You can see the language any text has been set in by looking in the status bar at the bottom of your screen.

Evidently, they are NOT. I have never removed them and cannot imagine why they would suddenly disappear. Seems I can only download 2013 and newer? I'm not certain what the proper fix is, if there is one.
