windows update and installer not working and can't update from factory settings windows 8

Question: windows update and installer not working and can't update from factory settings windows 8

I have unintentionally put my laptop back to factory settings and am now back to windows 8.
The windows update isn't working and I can't seem to do anything. I keep searching for updates to download and install but it then says the standalone windows installer is not working either.
Does anyone know how to get around this as I am stuck on windows 8 and I cannot download any games or anything.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I purchased a new notebook with Windows 7 in October. During the first weeks I uninstalled McAfee and replaced the harddrive. Since November Windows Update fails with error messages and defender does not start anymore. I made several virus scans (complete) with multiple antivirus programs but nothing showed up.Since it took my days to install various software, I do not want to re-install W7. I also have no good backup that I could restore. I am really surprised that there is not even a single entry regarding the error code in the Microsoft Knowledge base or elsewhere.I really would appreciate help.

Answer:Windows Update does not work, Windows Standalone Update Installer stops with error 0xc8000247 (Windows 7 Home Premium on Acer Aspire 1810TZ notebook)

Got it !!!!
If You are using notebooks with with hard drive larger than 700 GB you probably should update Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver.

I'm trying to figure out what the heck happened to my Mom's laptop. She says it notified her of a Windows update, she let it update and shut down, then when she booted it back up, it looks like it's fresh out of the box. I've been tinkering with it for the last hour, have tried a number of the solutions that I found online, and am at a loss for how to fix this. Here's what I've found:
-All documents, pictures, programs that she's installed, etc. can't be found in Windows Explorer.
-My first thought was to do a System Restore, but there's no available restore points beyond this morning (when the problem started).
-Windows temp files from before this morning are present, so that gives me hope that all her files are still on the HD.
-Restarting the computer, as well as creating a new Profile (with Admin status) changes nothing.
-I downloaded and am currently running Recuva (It'll take about an hour to complete its deep scan) to see if I can restore her files, but I'd like to see if I can restore the whole system, rather than having to pick files one by one to restore.
She says she's going to take it in to Geek Squad tomorrow if I can't fix it, and I'd like to save her the time and trouble, so any help you guys can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Windows 7 Update seems to have set Asus laptop back to factory settings

System: Windows Vista

Hello,

In the past week I have been experiencing difficulty in updating windows. Sometime "Windows Installer Module stopped working" pops up and other times "windows hosts file stopped working." I have tried various fix-it solutions with no luck (i.e. Fixit, SFC /SCANNOW, start and restarting installer). I would appreciate help.

Thanks.

Answer:Windows update not working and windows Installer Module stopped working.

copy what's the Quote box below

msiexec.exe /unregister
msiexec.exe /regserver
regsvr32 /s msi.dll
net start "windows firewall/internet connection sharing (ics)"Click to expand...

now open Notepad and Paste the above into the text-field.
Save (file>save) this as All files, and name it repairmsi.bat
Note: the .bat part is very important. Make sure you aren't saving it as a .txt document.

Now run this .bat file and see if the problem persists.

Hello,

I am having issues update my Windows Vista OS

In addition to the Modules Installer error, I have also received (although much less frequently) a WMI Provider Host stopped working error...

The only thing that changed with my system, and this was imediately before I started having issues, was I got new monitors.

I went from two generic 19" square LCDs to two 24" widescreen LEDs and I am running 1960x1080 now. I dont think that should matter but it is the ONLY thing that has changed.

I am getting a code 643 error. I have tried installing the SP 1 and all of the files in the redistribution for Windows Installer 4.5 but they all claim to be not applicable to my computer. I have been working on this for hours and am completely baffled. Microsoft Fix It says that there is a problem with my Installer but it does not FIX it.

I am running Windows 7 64-Bit

Thanks,

Windows update is stuck at 0%. I reset it to factory settings because I bought from some store that sold used computers. here are the things that I did. 1. I turn metered connections off as I read some problems came up with that still didn't work. 2. I did various things that did not do anything in command prompt like sfc/scannow but it said I had no problems. I tried troubleshooting windows update it shut off bits and other stuff but got stuck while restarting bits. now it is freezing when I try to activate anything in the control panel please help or should I just reset my computer.

I've found that the first set of Windows 8 updates takes forever to get past 0% Downloading. Just let it go for a couple hours.

Someone on Reddit described it as:

New installations of Windows 8 update certain system files in the background. The foreground "update" app can't get a lock on the update repository, so it just hangs until the background updating is done. It usually takes a couple of hours. Just wait it out.

I used the tool. I updated periodically one by one due to my daily download limit. I updated a few updates. Finally I have to update latest cumulative windows x64 update 4013429. That tool could not update that. When I went to settings|update, I get like the pic below. It hangs like that.

Now how to do the update.

Hello,

Upgraded from 8.1 earlier today. Hours later, I realized that the Windows Update dialogue box hangs with nothing going on except the loading dots animation (for up to half-an-hour so far). Can't tell if there are new updates and I'm concerned there could be some in the future that I may need but won't be able to access them.

Any help please!

Update - 9/8/15

Fixed by reinstalling Windows fresh (Again).

I think the problem was caused by installing Windows linked with my Microsoft account and then switching that to a local user. My Microsoft account was registered for the insider program so perhaps I was receiving the fast updates and switching to a local account put me on slow updates which got Windows Update muddled in the confusion.

Original Post

Windows Update appears to be stuck/broken. It displays this loading animation even when left alone for an entire day (See screenshot). All the other panels such as Windows Defender will display their available options, it is only Windows Update that will not show.

This is a clean install of Windows 10 Home.

I have made some alterations to the service configuration, disabling what I had been advised as unnecessary services. I have reverted as many of those changes as I could remember but it is a possibility that one of those changes caused this.

Background Intelligent Transfer service is "Running" and set to "Automatic (Delayed Start)".
Windows Update service is "Running" and set to "Manual (Trigger Start)".

8 Aug 15 - Edit: I have cross referenced services with another computer with an unaltered fresh install of Windows 10 Home. No difference in service configuration was found.

Internet connectivity is stable. Network profile is "Public". No alterations have been made to the default network configuration.

Just posting as a warning to others (and to vent my annoyance a bit)

I always set up my Windows update settings to "check and notify but don't download and install unless I tell you to" to prevent HDD thrashing, performance downgrading at the worst possible times and annoying "oh, you need to restart" notifications.

All working fine... but yesterday I notice some random and annoying HDD thrashing, bit later on the windows update restart notification wants to restart the computer ... what ?

It turns out my update settings had been reset to "automatically download and install (recommended)" without my knowledge and express permission. I was not amused .

And no, nobody else but me has access to the computer, much less someone who knows from where the windows update settings can be modified. And I doubt any malware/virus would be interested in keeping my windows up to date automatically.

Don't know what exact update caused it, but I know I will disable all windows updates if this happens again.

Answer:A update caused windows update settings to reset?

this is one of those Windows 8 [and Windows 10 now] "features" that drives me and a lot of other people nuts.
Why is it that I get different "answers", different results, different behavior, from the Control Panel "Windows Update" utility vs the PC Settings "Windows Update" utility? [And why does the latter throw an error when I press the Windows Key?] ?

dumb... I look in Control Panel/Windows Update and, for instance, will have "ready to install" a few updates - nice, clean, ready to go. I look in the Windows 8 [multi-step, slow, cumbersome] Windows Update and I have "check now"... hit the check now button, spin/spin/spin, may or may not get a response. Pressing the Windows Key to return to the relative tranquility of my desktop and it throws an error from 'Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library' "Runtime Error Program: C:\Windows\ImmersiveControlPanel\SystemSettings.exe" This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I prefer the control panel versions too, just right click action center flag icon choose Open Windows Update and away we go. What nerves me with the immersive version is looking at the history, it's much easier to read in the control panel version. I guess that's why the registry hack came out so quick in 10TP.

I just finished upgrading to the Creators Update, and would like to know the best Windows Update settings. I don't want any unexpected restarts, and I would like the option of being asked before installing each update, so I can properly prepare, rather than risk Windows automatically installing it at an inopportune time.

In the last version of Windows that I had (the Anniversary Update), I used the following trick recommended to me by a member of this forum:

b. Click the button on the tweaker.

It worked very well, and Windows always gave me the option to perform updates, rather than automatically downloading them.

However, I do not know whether it is safe to use this method in the Creators Update. Also, even if it is safe, I don't know whether it's my best best option, or whether the Creators Update now provides a better one.

I won't speak much to the update settings change for "notify only" but I will speak to the red text that reads "*Some settings..." These days, the notify only method is no longer explicitly available through Settings but through Group Policy. Another workaround is to set your home connection as metered in which case WU won't update automatically (you'll have to check for updates manually, because it won't notify you of pending updates, either -- but if you're a regular here at TenForums, you'll be notified in the News forum every time a new update shows up anyway). As for "*Some Settings..." that means some kind of policy tweak or change has been applied to your PC, and causes that message to appear. Making this go away turns out to be more trouble than it's worth: I've had it on my production PC since 1507 and I've yet to be able to clear it up since (along with lots of other people, if you search out the many threads devoted to that topic here).

Hey guys,

I tried to make my thread title as clear as possible, but I'll elaborate right now in case it wasn't as clear as I thought.

My computer is four years old, and I don't have much trouble with it, really. The CPU has it's slow moments, but it's a good computer.

I do not currently need to reformat my PC, but I was just pondering this question, and would like to know.

Anyways, whenever I reformat my computer back to factory settings, I am reverted back to very old software. I go back to Service Pack 1 (Vista), and I have to literally wait hours or days to get through Windows updates until I get Service Pack 2, because for some reason my computer doesn't let me update it manually without installing everything else first.

Do I have to buy some modern program disc or something to do this, or can I only avoid this by buying a more modern computer?

Answer:Is it possible to update the default factory settings programs?

First of all your topic title is not clear at all
As i know if you buy a PC with OEM Windows OS, HDD have secret partition with factory OS + Drivers + some software. Well it is more usual with laptops. It delete all your files.
I suggest to use Windows 7 x86. Win 7 have better performance than Vista.

Then I installed necessary Windows updates (Service Pack 3 and some others as suggested by Microsoft). After I finished with Windows updates I tried to update my system by using Thinkvantage System Update. This is where I got the error message even before contacting package index server. The message read that error occured trying to get user information. I can not go further.Has anybody got any idea about why this is happening? Thanks.

Win 7 64 Windows Update not working (post migration), nor is Windows Update Readiness tool installing. I have renamed catroot and stopped services, nothing working. I just migrated HD to a hybrid solid state (Seagate Momentus). I had this problem both with Acronis 2009 and Acronis 2013, and Windows Backup would not create a recoverable partition (always said file not available about 30% through the recovery). I have installed the Intel IDE ATA drivers, and scoured the help topics. I have tried everything. I could really use some help.

The error I receive when attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool is:

"Installer encountered an error: 0xc8000247"

The Microsoft FixIt and Control Panel FixIt says it has fixed the problem, but Update does not work. Nothing is working, but the OS is healthy, the disk is healthy. The sfc/scannow doesn't reveal any corrupted components.

I followed all of these instructions before attempting to install the Windows Update Readiness Tool:

Windows Update Service and Windows Module Installer Service are the two basic services responsible for all your updates to install correctly.

If Windows Updates are failing, then my first step would be to check if these two services are running.
Windows Update Service enables the detection, download, and installation of updates for Windows and other programs. If this service is disabled, users of this computer will not be able to use Windows Update or its automatic upda... Read more

Hi. Windows Update has not been working on my Win7 x64 Ultimate PC. I was too busy during the school semester to address the issue, so the issue has been around for a while.

I have cleaned out all the issues in the Action Center.

I used the Update Troubleshooter. It reported "Repair Windows Update components" and "Fixed". But then I ran the troubleshooter again and it gave me the same message.

I ran Update, but it failed again.

I ran "sfc /scannow", it fixed some problems. I re-ran "sfc /scannow" and it found no problems. I ran Update Troubleshooter, again, and it said Windows Update Components were "Fixed", again.

I ran Update, but it failed (again).

I ran a checkdisk (on Windows restart). It found something wrong with "C:\Windows\Installer\890b53b.msp" and said it fixed them.

I ran Update, but it failed. I ran Update Troubleshooter and it fixed Win Update Components, again.

I ran Update one more time, but it failed.

I tried to open C:\Windows\Installer\890b53b.msp and got the warning "This patch package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

I also tried Win Update with AVG (virus scanning software) turned off.

Now what do I do? I cannot do a system restore because I've let this problem linger and the restores only go back to 5/19 (why so few? where are the rest?).

Trying to install the update but having a problem with the instructions listed below.

"1. Select and copy the following to your clipboard:

reg delete HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions /va /f

2. Click on “Start”, then “All Programs”, then “Accessories”

Right click on “Command Prompt”, then click on “Run as administrator”
In the UAC prompt, verify that the program’s name is “Windows Command Processor” and then click “Yes”
Right click on the “Administrator: Command Prompt” window’s black area, then select “Paste”
Press “Enter”, you should see “The operation completed successfully”.
If you see “ERROR: Access is denied”, please make sure you followed Step 3.

Close the “Administrator: Command Prompt window”
This script above simply removes the configuration change, and will prevent future CEIP related crashes. The above fix is permanent, and will only need to be run once."

When it says "Right click on "Command Prompt", then click on "Run as administrator" I right clicked but there is no "Run as administrator" option ? There is a run with parameters or a run as..what do I do next ? Thanks

Don't know if this is normal or not, but my Windows Update is Forcing me to install Windows Installer 3.1 even though my setting is set to check with me before installing updates. It checks with me, and I can cancel, but in order to install further updates i must install the Windows Installer 3.1. I can't uncheck the 3.1 checkbox. Just figured this was kinda weird and wanted to get some input on the subject.

I'm running a windows xp 32bit OS.

Something as simple as trying to install printer drivers has turned into a myriad of issues that are now beyond my comprehension.

I'll walk you from the beginning providing all information about what has happened since the system was working fine to where it is now:

drivers were not installing, contacted HP service and support to troubleshoot issues.. nothing accomplished.

Tried windows update to see if that would help. Afterwards I was left with a new error problem: Windows Installer

Whenever any program attempts to install I receive a popup that reads as follows:

"Windows Installer"
Preparing to install...
[Cancel]

followed by a second popup that reads as follows:

"Windows Installer"
The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running Windows in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance.
[OK]

What I have found through some googles were instructions to try and run a "clean boot" and then try installing Windows Updates again. I have done the "clean boot" and when attempting to install the updates I am presented with a list of updates that were not able to be installed.

I do not know what else there is to do, but I thank you for your time in reading this post in the hopes that some assistance may be found.

What Service Pack to Windows XP do you have installed?

Maybe worth installing the Windows Installer 4.5 Redistributable HERE and reboot, then try Windows Update again.

Have you had any malware infection of late?

 Hi,
Something is going on with Windows update and new/restored 7 machines. Been going on pretty much all year so far and has been noticed by a great many other technicians besides me.  Windows 7 has seamed to taken the hit hard. With machines I have built
and restored for customers over these past few years. I know how long the update process approximately took with in an hour or 2. but the same machines are now running into days. Something is not right and needs to be investigated by Microsoft to locate the
problem unless it is being done intentionally for some reason. ??? Windows 8 and 10 machines don't seam to have as much problem 8 more than 10 but 7 never used too.

This involves too many different manufactures machines and clean installs of 7 SP1 for this to be a OS install problem. Not when doing the same machine with in less than 2 years and I could turn the machine over and have it ready to return to work in
a day. Not with the current problem with the update system for 7 OS anyway. I have read where this problem has been very frustrating for other techs.

I have tried a number of the so called KB fixes for this and they pretty much do not correct the problem, I believe it is with the update system and older OS's.

If is an effort to force 10 on folks is not good, if they don't like it and just don't want it, or have other issues with it. They ask for 7 OS machines. You have something people really like!!! So keep selling it and supporti... Read more

Problems with Windows 10 Updates are an ongoing issue now.
and the possible solution to overcome this is by downloading the updates manually from the Microsoft?Update Catalog or using tools like WHDownloader (formerly Windows Hotfix Downloader)

The issue is that some times the packages will be CAB files and that's when the normal users won't be having an option about what to do next. Thus, to tackle this issue, I have managed to make a tiny program which will indeed help to Install those Cab file packages in windows without any troubles.

I tried a number of folders, and I've tried Run, and the same thing always happens. The file is big, 214 MB, but I think I've successfully run installation files bigger than that.

Should I try to install it in Safe Mode? I don't even know if that's possible.

Standard problem now on clean installs of Windows 7. You should download and install IE11 and .NET 4.6.1 before proceeding. A window keeps popping up saying I need to set it that way?? So I click it any way, and that's when a svchost starts to go through the roof.

Problem #2, that is mentioned about. This svchost, that points back to system 32. Once activated ( how ever it gets that way, other then what I mentioned above ) Then goes sky high, to the point I fear the computer will start to fly off my desktop. It's shot up as high as 1,500,000Ks, and even peaked up near 2,400,000 K while trying to update last night. So I finally just shut the computer down. Because I was afraid to leave it that way over night, or it might just fry my computer period.

Which leads to Problem 3, ( which is really problem one but ) where and how this all began. It all began with me being very unsatisfied with the way my computer was running. I was getting Problem 2, among others. But now compared to what I've seen happen since the reintsall? That same svchost was only rising to 400,00 & 560,000 before doing the reinstall. The computer wont update. I've had it running for 6 hours, all the time I've had to keep "ending process" on that svchost. Because those numbers and super high CPU & Memory #s also scare me.

This is the 4th time ( 2nd on this machine ) I have done a set back to factory settings on a Windows 7 64 home edition. I did... Read more

I did a complete Factory restore on this laptop because i could not get Security Essentials and Windows updates to work. I did a reset of the widows update module with a script I found on this forum, but updates would still not work. So.. I said "I had enough" and decided to do a factory restore.

As soon as I had windows restored as If I Just bought it I ran Windows update to see what would happen. From start/all programs I clicked Windows Updates.

I get the following message: "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running.

All the needed services are listed as running, which is confusing the heck out of me. Is it possible that the restore partition is corrupt. The computer did have some viruses before the factory restore which I believe casued this in the first place.

Hello all,

Today I had to do a reinstall to fix some things (it didn't fix them lol) so now I'm stuck. Windows 10 will not update. I get the error code 0x80240442 after a while. I'm not sure if its an issue with my drivers not being updated, but all of the web pages I have found that have this error code won't open. Not even the Microsoft pages, including hotmail. I searched this forum for an answer (because it was the only one that opened) and the only thread I found didn't come to a conclusion. So here I am, asking if somebody can help me solve this.

Thanks in advance.

Help please: HP laptop running windows 7 64 bit. It must be infected with something, it shows 99% cpu usage and runs very slowly.
In task manager, it shows "windows modules installer worker" and "update helper (32 bit)"; they both won't close and hog the cpu usage using 40% or more each. locking up the machine as to be almost unusable.
I ran the cleanup logs but could not send from that machine so am using another laptop. Also, I could not install chrome browser and IE would only go to www-searching.com.
This must be some type of malware or virus.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Was browsing, and got hit by one of those fake security scanner sites. Just shut down. When I started back up Windows installer tried to update SonicDVD but was unable to find a component, can't remember what it was. Each time it started trying to install I would press cancel. I would have to do this four or five times and it would stop for about five minutes. Then it would jump back into the update routine and I would have to go through the same process. Finally I got fed up with it and uninstalled all traces of Sonic. Now since Sonic is gone, The dialogs just flash past on my screen every five minutes or so. They don't stop anything, but there is something out there that shouldn't be there. Don't know what it is, don't know how to get rid of it.

just did a fresh install yesterday and im having trouble getting windows updates. i left the machine on overnight and when i came back in the morning, it was still "searching" for updates in windows update. i saw alternative solutions online including downloading the "SP2" for win7 and installing manually via the standalone installer, but that appears to be stuck as well.

any suggestions?

additionally, the windows update process shows up as "explorer.exe" and not "wuauclt.exe" under task manager

the standalone installer shows up as "wusa.exe" though..

I'm not sure what has happened here. My daughter has a sony Vaio laptop that came with Home Premium installed. I upgraded it to Professional and it's been working fine for over a year. A few weeks ago it just wouldn't start so inserted the Professional installation discs and did a start up repair which seemed to do the trick. Last night she turned it off, but when she restarted this morning it was as if she had just received it as started up on Home Premium and looks like a factory reset.

I went to system restore and last restore point at 9am this morning so again looks like a completely fresh pc and first restore point is the windows update. Is there any possibilty that both OSs are still present and for some reason it is launching the wrong one? I don't want to go through a full instalaltion etc if not needed. All the data is backed up, but going to take a while.

I am of course concerned this is the second "incident" in a month so is the laptop going thorugh a major meltdown and likely to continue to struggle?

Thanks for any advice

Mike

Hello everyone!    I just did a complete factory recovery on a Lenovo 3000 K100, with Windows Vista Home Premium 32bits.The recovery was successeful. (I used the Recovery partition that came from the Lenovo)The device manager has nothing wrong. But when I try to do a Windows Update, I have the error 80072EE2Installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and when triyng to update it, the update fail, telling me that the connection timed out. (please note that I was able to download it online) I can surf on the web, go on different websites, but when I go to Microsoft website, it takes time before the webpage loads sometime! Some people said that I should remove the UseWUServer (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU) from my registery, but this key is missing in my registery. I cannot find it.So, tried other fixes suggested in forums, like reset my internet settings (but it's a fresh windows install)Tried in cmd "net stop wuauserv" and then "start" ... the service is running normally...In services, Windows Update is on Automatic (Delayed) Running. (I even changed it to Automatic) I renamed the Hosts file, and flushed the DNS. The Hosts file should be generated automatically after being removed. There is no Third party Firewall. The only antivirus installed, is Microsoft Security Essentials. There is no softwares installed after the Factory Recovery. I tried to ping www.google.com, and there is 25% loss, with... Read more

Did a fresh install of win7 x64 and had the problem with windows update checking for update forever so decided to install updates via wsus offline installer

Wsus found and installed 210 updates and installed them then found another 28 but in the meantime window updater that i left running found 217 updates as well so now im installing the updates with windows updater and i'm not sure if that's the right thing to do?

Should i reinstall windows again and install updates only with wsus?
Or windows updater will skip the updates installed by wsus?

Not sure what to do now any advice please?

I've had lots of problems with this desktop, and have wiped it twice. I now cannot run some programs, and found it's due to an older version of Java. Was told to get an updated version.

In following instructions, I was frustrated to find I could not remove the Java program that's in my Add/Remove Programs. It's Java 2SE, or some such thing. I get "Windows installer cannot do this, yada, yada, and that it's probably likely due to being in Safe Mode or not having Windows Installer properly installed. Contact System Administrator. Right.

I have downloaded Java 6, also. Tried, that, same result.

I found these forums on a Google search and saw the same result from someone else....and the advice was to remove the old Java first. I can't do that.

So what can I do?

I have some 32bit software that I installed on Windows 10 a few months ago.
For some reason I needed to reinstall that software, but now the 32 bit installer crashes.
Has a recent update knocked something off?

(I have tried running it as admin, compatibility mode etc. Not working.)

Answer:old 32-bit installer no longer works on Windows 10 since recent update

Hi Bansaw

Saw your comment "for some reason I needed to re-install"

I have no proof but I'm going to suggest that maybe the original is still installed in some capacity. I would look at manufacture's site for a removal tool and then re-run installer.

First off System Specs:

Asus G60VX Series Notebook
Windows Vista 64-Bit Home Premium (Yes, im sure it is 64 bit)
Nvidia GeForceGTX 260M CUDA 1GB
4GB RAM
RealTek HD Audio

IF you need to any other specs just ask.

PROBLEM:

Basically I bought this computer for gaming and several games Ive bought recently wont run so I figured I would update the graphics driver just to be safe and then go from there. I download the installer for the latest nvidia driver just fine, and when I go to install it says Im not running Vista 64-Bit when I clearly am and closes. And when i try the 32bit installer it says it cant find compatible hardware for the drivers, an also untrue statement.

Help please?

I have re-downloaded the file with the same success. If it matters, the Windows Update Agent version is 7.9.9600.17336

Steps to reproduce error: 1. Use OneKey recovery to restore initial factory settings.2. On the Windows initial configuration screen select a timezone ahead of UTC-8, such as UTC (London)3. Log in to Windows, open Windows Update control panel and click "Install Updates"4. Reboot computer to complete updates.5. On login screen attempt to login or shutdown the computer. Result: Computer is stuck with only desktop wallpaper and mouse pointer visible. No response to any keys. Pressing the power button sleeps the machine. Pressing it again wakes the machine back to the stuck state. I have reproduced this problem 3 times using initial restore each time. Wordaround: Before beginning the factory restore process, set the system clock back by 24 hours. After the factory restore completes, set the system clock back to the correct time. Alternatively, wait 24 hours between a factory reset and attempting to install Windows updates. Analysis: This problem is caused because of the way that Windows stores the time. It assumes that the system clock is set to local time rather than UTC. When you use the OneKey recovery system it does not know what timezone the system clock is set to, and so it assumes that it is set to UTC-8. If it is in fact set to UTC, OneKey Recovery creates files with a timestamp 8 hours in the future. This causes Windows Update to fail.

Hi, I wasn't sure if I should post this in the Windows 7 section or in here. I have an IdeaPad Y560 and I just had my hard drive replaced under an extended warranty service from the place I bought the laptop, Frys.  Everything is working fine, and I used the Lenovo self support tool to check and determine that all the hardware was in good and working order after getting the computer back from service. However, as I soon as I started to run Windows Update, I got an error. Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running.  You may need to restart your computer. The Windows Update icon has a large red X on it and every time I press the check for updates button, I get that error message.  So, I went through and reused the Lenovo factory recovery CDs to do a clean install.  Once again, when it booted back up, same problem.  No new software had been added and nothing had been changed. I decided to try a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate I had purchased for a different computer to see if I would have different results. But, after formatting, and then installing all the factory Lenovo drivers AND NOTHING ELSE I still get the same result. I searched and searched on Google for different suggestions from Microsoft and various other community forums as to suggestions as to how to try and resolve this problem, but nothing has worked.  I've tried the automatic Microsoft Fix It tool, I've run the ... Hi, I'm completely stumped. I have an HP tm2t-1000 tablet pc running Windows 7 professional x64. A couple of weeks ago, the hard drive died on me. It was a 500GB 7200rpm SATA drive, but I thought I'd splurge and order a 750GB to replace it. I received the drive, dropped it in and reinstalled Windows from the HP supplied recovery CD. Everything seemed fine until I had some problems installing a piece of software, then I had problems installing another piece of software, then another. I figured it was just a bad install so I wiped the drive and installed windows again. unfortunately, this had no effect, and the same problems persisted.

Seems like the deeper I dig, the more problems I find. The main installer I've been having a problem with is mixed in key 5. the installer quits halfway through every time, no error or anything, just disappears. through the support forums, I determined that this is an issue with Microsoft dot net framework, and it was recommended that I install it through Microsoft's standalone installer. However, when I try to do this, the installer gets to the point where it finishes verifying the installer package and then just sits there and doesn't install. I figured maybe it would work better if I updated windows, so I went to the windows update section of the control panels, and the window hangs whenever I open it. Eventually I am able to get it to load the window (I still don't know how), but when I click "Check for upd... Read more

So i reformatted my entire drive and installed Windows 10 Creator x64 brand new.

I update the computer thru windows update.

Now, whenever i install AMD Crimision Relive Edition 17.9.2 or lower(like 17.5.0) it freezes AFTER the point where the computer monitor turns black and turn back on. The installation bar would progress and when gets to the end, the entire computer freezes.

I tried using AMD CLEANUP. It freezes at the beginning.

SO i am thinking near the end of installation, the software is cleaning up and that where the freezing occur.

The good news is that i can use windows update thru device manager to update AMD driver to the latest version with ZERO problem.

My card is a XFX BLack edition 7950 3GB.

Anyone having this issue?

Hi guys,

I think that the latest Windows 10 update might have reset my windows to the default (initial/standard) settings. I leave my PC ON over the night and when I woke up the PC seemed to have restarted over night (I say to myself it might have been that the power went off sometime over the night or that windows freaking 10 updates restarted my PC), and now I have all of the settings I did to windows back to their default state and all the file associations are reset back to default. Even the video player settings are reset to default.

What the **** just happen ?
EDIT: Great.... looks like all the software acts like they just have been freshly installed

UPDATE: I went into themes and everything is greyed out except the basic old themes. I tried find and fix problems for aero themes display but it didn't come up with anything... when looking through google I see things about updating registry entries but I'm not sure I should be doing that based on google suggestions with my luck.

Windows did an update and now my system looks like its running an older version of windows...see attached picture. If I do a system restore to before the update I can get it running like it should again, but there should be a way to fix this without the restore, I just can't figure it out. Any ideas

I'm also getting errors about not being able to log into the windows system to check for updates when I start the computer, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

Hello, and thanks in advance for reading my post and hopefully giving me suggestions to fix my problem. I have searched many posts here and elsewhere and can?t seem to find the solution. My laptop (Acer Aspire, 64 bit, W7 Home Premium, 4GB RAM) was taking almost 20-30 minutes to load so I backed up data, which luckily wasn?t a lot, and restored it to factory settings. This worked GREAT and I felt like I actually had my computer back. It would always work fine after the slow boot but I was happy to have a speedy boot up.

So after a few normal program installs, antivirus-Java-etc, put my music and docs back on, and a Windows update it started to take 10+ minutes to boot up like a day after restoring it. Once it did boot up it was fine and ran smooth. I had originally put Comodo AV on it and switched it to Avast last night to see if that was a problem, and also uninstalled Java, Windows Live stuff that came with the initial install I guess and a few other useless programs (McAfee trial, etc).

Here are the other steps I tried:
In startup unchecked all except AV

Ran Soludo (It says 95% of boot lag is system and must have stuff)

Updated Audio driver

Ran CCleaner for internet and registry clean up

Scanned computer with AV (but on a fresh factory setup I can?t see if there would be much)

Opened in Safe Mode w/ Networking (Booted in 30 secs)

Looked at Event Viewer and got ?Critical? errors for Boot 100 and a few others (Boot 101, etc) but Boot
100 was the worst by fa... Read more

It took a lot of time to download the cyan update but finally i have windows 8.1 in my Lumia 520.
I want to factory reset my phone now. would factory resetting take my phone all back to the oldest version of windows 8, the version which was present at the time of purchase, or would it be okay and still windows 8.1 ?
Because a total of 1.5 GB download took quite a long time.
I do not wan to do all that hard work again :(
Can i factory reset my Lumia 520 so ?
What OS would it show after resetting is my main question ? :(
Please answer
Thanks

Answer:Would i need to download and update again windows 8.1 if i factory reset my Nokia Lumia 520 ?

It will not go back to black.., doing factory reset will erase all your personal content , apps and reset all your settings.,
After factory reset U will be on the same firmware and same OS version as of now.

so, the cumulative update for kb4013429 and kb4013418 went in for me last night, I'm thinking ok cool, about time I saw another update...

I load up star trek online to run the breach event today and right away I notice hellishly slow performance..as in I FLEW INTO A WALL, despite trying to steer to avoid it, so I figure, load up task manager, as I only see performance hits in STO whenever something's eating cpu usage, usually skype's new browser host doohickey..nope. none of my skype windows are up(and thats the only time I see the browser host cause..banner ads, we NEED those microsoft -sarcasm-)

so, I check that nothing else is eating cpu, like avast's various processes...nope, not even an update is running.

I actually manually check those usual culprit sources for the record..

so I reopen task manager and then click on the cpu tab on processes...and whoa momma...windows module installer worker has been running, and is eating precisely half my cpu capacity and has been for the past 40 minutes(the typical breach run takes 20 minutes, I've run two, do the math :P ).

what the sam hell is going on with this idjut computer now? should I be calling it what my late grandfather, rest his soul used to back in the windows 98 days, 'that damned idiot box'?

Answer:high cpu usage by windows modules installer worker post 3/14 update

You too, eh!?
At least yours is running.
I cannot open anything post update, it totally messed up my PC.
I am in safe mode right now.

an almost literal repeat of this thread here high cpu usage by windows modules installer worker post 3/14 update - - Windows 10 Forums in terms of circumstances, and it JUST did it again not 20 minutes ago.

did they break something or am I the only one seeing these EXACT same symptoms?

high cpu usage, then high disk usage...

I have a HP Pavilion dv5 laptop and I just replaced the hard drive because it would not allow me to do and update to get the latest version of Windows Life Messenger. It required the Windows Platform update and after being downloaded, it would undo the installation at start up, saying it did not install correctly and was rolling over the installation. I tried several times and nothing happens. So, I put the factory restore DVD?s. It seemed fined until the computer start looping to the black screen with the options: Start Windows Normally, Start in Safe Mode, Last Good Knows Configuration and so on. Every option I choose it looked like it was going to work and them I got the famous Blue Screen of Death. With that, I got to the conclusion that the hard drive was dead, so I replace it and again I used the factory DVD?s to restore to factory settings. After all was done I started to put my softwares back one by one and Trend Micro Security asked for a Vista Security Pack 2. I tried to go to Start>Windows Update and nothing happened; the windows explorer froze and stopped responding. So, I got it manually installed and it did successfully, however I still cannot upgrade anything else. Every time I click Start>Windows Update it freezes and stops responding. I will not work at all.
Doing a System restore will not do anything I suppose since everything is blank, no restore point only before installing Vista SP2, and by that time Windows Update did not work as well. I ... Read more

I received a ThinkPad W500 laptop from a seller on eBay, and it came with a user already set up (no password), and whenever I ran Windows Update gave an error, Lenovo System Update aborted, Windows Defender couldn't update, I couldn't update Internet Explorer, and I couldn't install Microsoft Security Essentials. I did a factory restore and ran into the same problems. I'm afraid the factory image has malware on it but I have no idea how to investigate it. I'm not sure if wiping the hard drive (and partitions) or replacing it would fix it, and I'm not sure how to check if it's in the firmware. Any ideas? Here's the errors:Windows Mail could not be started because MSOE.DLL could not be inititialized.Internet Explorer's version is not compatible with the version you're running (even though Microsoft only gives you one button to download)Lenovo System Updates: Expection Not Expected was encounteredWindows Update: Error Code 8024A000, which Windows Help says is most likely a virusSeveral websites couldn't open: support.microsoft.com and start.lenovo.comWindows Defender got error 0xc8000247Microsoft Fix It couldn't install PowerShellMicrosoft Security Essentials would download but wouldn't installThis has all the markings of malware but I installed and ran MalwareBytes which found nothing, and neither did Norton Security Scan, so that's why I think the virus is in the factory image or firmware.

Answer:W500 factory restore won't allow Windows Update or Microsoft Security Essentials

Hello,

I would suggest ordering new recovery media from Lenovo support, then doing a complete wipe of the W500's internal drive prior to using the recovery media.
