Cleaning up a Lenovo Thinkpad

Question: Cleaning up a Lenovo Thinkpad

Not for the first time I've been attempting to remove some of the pre-installed stuff on my Thinkpad E335 Win 7 Pro x64 and once again doing so has rendered the system unusable. I'm not talking about trial software versions and so on - there was none of that unwanted stuff on this machine - but there are a lot of Lenovo system utilities which cause it to be rather sluggish starting up though perhaps less so once up and running. I also installed Win 8.1 on the system and there is a marked contrast in responsiveness, Win 8.1 being far the lighter footed. Yet 8.1 has none of these system utilities which to my mind says simply that they are not necessary. Yet it seems they are so integrated into Win 7 that removing them damages 7 itself.

So, unless Lenovo users are confident of their ability to recover a borked system, I strongly advise not trying to remove any of this stuff and I'm also wondering how the upcoming Win 10 upgrade will deal with all these integrated utilities. If I only had the original Win 7 system I would be treading very carefully.

I don't know whether Lenovo are alone adding all this system management stuff - I guess not - so other makes might need to be treated carefully too.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Lenovo is not alone, all the manufacturers are bundling software they think we need. I wish hardware manufacturers would only supply us with the necessary drivers and leave the rest to us. Afterall, we only need sites like MajorGeeks that tests and hosts software programs. And there's the Support Forums with invaluable advice.

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum and this is my first post here, I hope anyone can help me. I recently bought refurbised Lenovo ThinkPad X1 model 1294-A2Y and everything worked fine until I opened it. The reason for opening was looking for battery info, since the battery I got with the laptop was bad and I wanted to replace it. Here's what I did, i opened all as instructed, unscrewd all the parts, take the keyboard off but i didn't touch the processor cooling system. Than I put it all back together. When I pushed the power on button nothing happened, the laptop won't turn on. Than i tare it apart again, plug the battery and the power cord off and pressed the power on button for 20 seconds. After pluging the battery and the power cord laptop started fine, but the problem is that it works only for a few minutes and than turns off all of a sudden. And than it won't start again, and I need to tare all apart in order to turn it off again. Did anyone had a similar situation? Can anyone help me with this? Thank you in advance

Hi and welcome to the forum!I use a microfiber cloth and small chunk of water to clean my gears, but if something is really dirty and can't be cleaned through water then I apply tiny amount of soap to the wet cloth. There are many products available in the market too, but I don't trust any, YMMV.Lenovo Blogs has some tips too:- http://lenovoblogs.com/designmatters/?p=121Hope it helps.

Yes, it will delete all your data if SSD used in your system is FDE drive , as this software uses the mechanism to reset the Cryptographic Key used for encrypting the data.

What is FDE cryptographic erase?
"Each FDE drive has a unique encryption key, through which the data is processed real time as it is saved to the media.  Each FDE drive saves different bit patterns to the media given the same original data, while non-FDE drives save the same bit patterns to the media.  The cryptographic key is also used to decrypt the data.  If the encryption key is changed in any way, all data on the drive becomes useless bits.  The only way to read the data again would be to restore the originating encryption key."

I was told that the display on a laptop is very fragil, and that you should never, NEVER touch it with anything. What is a safe way of cleaning the TFT display? I work in a pretty dusty environment and the TFT is developing a "crust" which I want to remove before it gets any worse. Any ideas out there?

Hello! I am new to this forum and I have a problem with my T420. I hope this is the right place to get feedback on my problem.I have a T420 and it gets quite hot at times. Idlle and light use CPU temperature is about 45-55C, but when I play games it goes up to over 90C for CPU and GPU runs at 70-80C. Load temps are WAY too high.Because my machine is still under warranty, I contacted my local Lenovo service (Kernel, Estonia) and they said that cleaning and repasting a computer is not a warranty case.So I figured that I might aswell clean and repaste the machine myself. I have cleaned MANY computers before and I repair electronics (stereo equipment mainly) for a living, so I will not have any problems doing that. HOWEVER, will taking my machine apart for a cleaning void the warranty? And will getting it done at a non-licensed repair shop void the warranty? Thanks in advance!

Answer:ThinkPad t420 cleaning

45-55C seems ok, but over 90C is not. In the U.S., I would expect that if I called service and simply said that it was running too hot and it was over 90C under load, they would service it. (I wouldn't suggest talking about cleaning or playing games.) I suggest calling again.

What is the safeset way to clean a monitor screen. I've read you should never use paper or treat it with products as if it were glass. John

Answer:cleaning monitor screen - T400 Thinkpad

I've been cleaning mine with a damp paper towel (water only), and it works fairly well.   I only clean it when it is shut down and make sure it is dry before turning it back on.  I am not sure what the recommended method is.

Hello, We have a problem with 2 laptops (ThinkPad X270) that "freeze" on the LENOVO logo when using Lenovo Ultra Dock with monitor Dell UZ2715H.Display Dell is plugged by Display port ports and one USB 3.0 (9 pin - used for display integrated webcam) connected to ThinkPad dock. When notebook turned ON with connected USB 3.0, computer freeze on LENOVO logo (To interrupt normal startup, press Enter) and work only when USB 3.0 disconected, or turned OFF and again Turned ON. Firmware on Dock is 2.33.000 Any suggestion?

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Ultra (Pro) Dock + ThinkPad X270 (20K6) + Dell UZ2715H

I am just going to guess that computer is trying to boot via USB, so you might try changing the boot order in the BIOS so that Windows Boot Manager or the HD is first.

I have a ThinkPad W520-4282. I want to use a ThinkPad Mini Dock Plus Series 3 (170W) [pn 433830U] at work and a Lenovo USB 2.0 Port Replicator with Digital Video [0A33942] at home.I did not have to install any drivers for the Mini Dock and it worked just fine driving an external monitor. After installing the driver for the Port Replicator, I could no longer drive the external monitor when attached to the mini dock or the VGA+ video port on the ThinkPad.I played with a lot of things to fix the situation and nothing worked. I even uninstalled the driver for the Port Replicator and still could not drive an external monitor. In fact the laptop did not even recognize that an external monitor was attached.Later I found using the Device Manager that the NVIDIA Qadro 1000M display adapter was disabled, proabably during installation of the Port Replicator driver. Once I enabled that, I could drive an external monitor again. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Will I be able to use the Port Replicator if I install the driver again?

So I got myself the Lenovo ThinkPad W510 the other day, specific model being "431929G", along with it I got myself a 9-cell battery instead of the included 6-cell as well as this additional "slice battery" solutions which you attach at the bottom of the computer using the docking port it seems? The box which this slice battery came in was marked model 57Y4545, the piece of battery inside however says FRU: 42T4739? I guess and hope it's the same thing?  It does attach to the bottom of my W510 without any issues whatsoever, I lock it in place so I get that green indicator which should mean it's supposed to function? But it doesn't.. ThinkVantage Power Manager do pick up the battery but it's just standing there at 12% battery with no activity? Even after the main 9-cell is fully charged it wont start to charge the slice battery? I did even remove the main 9-cell in order to see whether or not that would change anything, but it didn't? And if I remove the power cord when running only the slice battery the W510 will just drop dead? So it's not charging, neither is it providing my W510 with any more battery life? It just sits the with 12% battery with no activity whatsoever, no charging or usage at all?

Answer:ThinkPad Battery 27++ (9cell) 57Y4545 wont work with my Lenovo ThinkPad W510?

Are you sure you're running the latest power manager? I.e., have you updated all the system drivers, os drivers, bios, etc.?

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

When I dock the computer and press the power button on the dock it doesn't recognize my monitor as the main screen. I have to hit a key (Windows 10) and put in my password hoping that it's doing that and then the screen comes up. If I reboot after that ... THEN.... it recognizes my screen as the main monitor. How do I fix this? The only time this happens is when I use it off the dock and then put it back on. If it stays on the dock all the time it does just fine. Any fixes for this? Thanks...

Hallo!

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Bluetooth Laser Mouse hakt und ruckelt seit Creators Update am Thinkpad P70 ...

I got the same problem.... But first let me translate this for everybody here.  My P70 (or in my case P71) has a problem to keep the connection estimated between the Lenovo mouse and my Laptop. Got the current driver installed.  The German guy above me got the same issue after the creators update.   I set everything Bluetooth related in Device Manager up to NOT let windows turn of the device to save power.  The mouse cuts out for 5 sec and comes back on. If you turn the mouse upside down during that time I noticed that the battery led toggles on and off. So it reboots. So I assume it's driver related to because it worked perfectly fine before on the L530 guys machine.

trying to decide between the T540P/T550 and W541/W550s..... it will be for school and would like to have a 5th gen i series CPU but that's not top priority as other specs are the deciding factor for me. ether one needs dedicated graphics and 16 or 32 gb of ram with windows 7 and a 3K display.... do I really need an i7 for graphics and computer service/IT? what do you recommend?

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T540P/T440P vs Thinkpad W541/W550s

They are all good machines.  First thing I would say is that I would highly suggest sticking to the newer models that have physical trackpoint buttons above the touchpad instead of the large clickpad (e.g. the T540p).  Even if you only use the touchpad, the newer one is significantly better.  I have a T440s myself and actually replaced the original clickpad with the one from the newer model because the original was so terrible. You also need to think about whether you need a dedicated Quadro GPU or not.  This would be the main difference between the T and W series.  For heavy graphics work, the W series is the better option whereas the T series is designed for more business-oriented workloads. You then really have the slightly tricky decision for the CPU.  Currently Intel have not released full power Broadwell (5th gen) CPUs.  This means that the T550 and W550s have the 5th generation, low voltage CPUs.  While these are still good chips and will certainly improve battery life, they will be slightly less powerful than the full power counterparts and also don't have quad core options (they are all dual core with hyperthreading).  If you want a full power/quad core chip, you would need to then go for the W541, however this does mean you are getting a slightly older Haswell chip.  Whether this bothers you is really up to you.Whatever you do, also ensure that you get an IPS screen - The ThinkPad IPS screens are fantastic, the TN... there seems to be the same type of protective film [as the X1 Carbon Touch screen] on my new ThinkPad Yoga.  It has become rather dirty after just a few days.  Given that it is some special plastics I did not dare to use the usual LCD cleaning fluid.  What is the official cleaning recommendation?

I recieved my Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11e a couple of days ago and it came with a lot of bloatware, or at least what I thought was. I started uninstalling a lot and everything seemed to work fine. I restarted it, but when it came back, I noticed the touch screen would not work. I went into the Device Manager and realized that one of my I2C drivers had the triangle with the exclamation was on one of them. After trial and error, I realized that disabling and re-enabling the driver would allow my touch screen to work. After a restart, however, I was back to square one. My wife bought her the same Lenovo Yoga and I have been compairing the two. I just noticed that I am missing the I2C controllers in the System Devices in the Device Manager as well. I have tried booting from an installation from hers and even copying the drivers and System32 folder to no avail. If anybody has any solutions, please help. I have tried everything I knew and everything I could find. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga 11e missing I2C driver. Drivers from lenovo website not working.

Hello and welcome,

What happens when you install the i2c driver for your machine?  Before doing so please verify the machine type (20D9, 20DA) as there's another machine type option available.  Downloads found by using SUPPORT above and entering Yoga 11e.

Machine: T520 bought Feb. 2012O.S. W~7 Pro 64-bit I want to wipe the harddrive, buy a Lenovo W~7 PRO installation DVD, and do a completely clean installation. Lenovo User Guide (.pdf) Ch. 8, Adv'd Config, Installing Windows 7, p. 295 (212 of 298) says:Start Thinkpad setup, then choose UEFI versus Legacy, then insert the installation DVD. This obviously does not apply when the harddrive has already been wiped (necessary to 100% eliminate all traces of irreversible damage caused by a virus, including the re-installation partition (Q-drive). When an intallation DVD is purchased from Lenovo, is not the first step to insert the DVD ?!! Then presumably there is an installation wizard resulting in a restored O.S. ?!! If not, please tell me what surprises are in store, and where I can find a reliable written resource to consult !!! Thank-you.

Answer:PLEASE LENOVO PLS PLS PLS!!! UPDATE YOUR GRAPHICS DRIVERS FOR LENOVO THINKPAD S1 YOGA

I don't see why you want to update your graphics drivers. If it works, it works. If there aren't any bugs there is nothing to worry about. And as far as gaming performance goes, it is still going to be slow and barely going to make a difference. If the generic drivers from Intel, Nvidia or AMD work use those. But make sure that brightness keys etc work correctly.

Hi, My Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430 is listed in the "supported W8" systems, http://shop.lenovo.com/gbweb/gb/en/learn/products/ee8/index.html But what is "Lenovo Enhanced Experience 8"? Should be some software available? Should be something available? So far, I got my hands over some drivers (card reader, hotkey, active protection system) and little more. Should something else be installed in the notebook to improve it's performance?

If I helped you, please give me some kudos! ^^

Purchased a brand new ThinkPad Yoga 14 Ultrabook, I have it one week.  I called Lenovo for support on the pen and touch screen driver and they want $70 before they will help.  Reps said that this issues has been resollved but that  I need to pay ANOTHER $70, on a machine that just came out of the box, if I want to know what it is. Disappointed to say the least!  If there's a Lenovo rep that wants to make this better, I'd appreciate it.

Hi, I've recently just purchased the lenovo Y50. I noticed that the ventalation areas on the bottom of the laptop are accumulating a lot of dust. I was wondering how to clean this? Should I take off the bottom cover and try to blow the dust out or take some kind of wet sponge and swipe across the exterior of the vent? Thanks!

Answer:Cleaning Dust off of Lenovo Y50

Welcome to the forum! I would try using a can of compressed air to blow out the fan and ventilation grills.  Use short bursts of air to blow out the passages as long burst may over rev the fan.  Also be sure to blow air in both the intake and exhaust grills to remove dust from both directions.  That always works best for me.  Canned compressed air is available at any office supply store or big box store.  I would avoid using a damp cloth or sponge on the grills until you have the insides blown out of all the dust bunnies.  Getting the inner accumulated dust wet may solidify it when dried if it isn't totally removed. If you have any removable covers on the bottom that have vent slits you can remove these for cleaning.  As for removing the entire laptop bottom that would take quite a bit of disassembling to accomplish that chore.

Hello, I've had a Lenovo Y580 for about an year now and it has started to heat up to really high temperatures about 65 degrees on the hdd and above 90 on the graphics card and cpu. I contacted the Lenovo support center in my region and the person advised me to clean my laptop instead of sending it for repair. So my question is if I open up the laptop to reach the motherboard will it void warranty and if I decide to replace the thermal paste will this void the warranty?

Answer:Cleaning the Lenovo y580

hi Te4ko,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

Opening the computer will not void your warranty, same as replacing/upgrading some parts.
but, damages on parts or cosmetics during the replacement won't be covered.

Just be extra careful on opening the system and here check this manual of your system disassembly.
Y480 / Y580 disassembly guide

check this article about warranty concerns
http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/T400-T500-and-newer-T-series/Will-changing-your-keyboard-void-the-warran...

also check this one that I use for thermal paste replacement.

Hope this helps,
Cheers

First off thanks for letting me join.  Just wanted to get some opinions from some of the more experienced Lenovo owners and users.  I want to pick up the T420 as my first Lenovo Thinkpad.  What is the overall verdict on this laptop (Good build quality, reliability issues, or anything else I should be aware of)?  I use to own a IBM Thinkpad and just missed the overall layout of the Thinkpad specific look and functionality.  To date, the IBM Thinkpad has been my favorite Windows based laptop.  Any and all opinions would be deeply appreciated. May God bless! Ed

Answer:New to forum and opinions on the Lenovo T420 being my first Lenovo Thinkpad?

I've only had my T420 for a couple of weeks but so far I really like it.  I reminds me of a mini version of the W520.  My T420 has the i7 processor, NVIDIA Optimus and most of the options.  I upgraded the RAM to 16GB and currently have the Intel Series 510 120GB SSD in the primary bay.  I am waiting for a Samsung Series 830 SSD to arrive. No complaints so far.  It runs nice, quiet and cool. If I were going to improve anthing on the machine, it would be the screen.  The 1600x900 AUO screen on mine is fair but I can live with it.  I bought this machine new on eBay for an excellent price. I am using the 6 cell battery right now and get a little over four hours of battery life. The 9 cell is quite a bit better but I like the flush lighter 6 cell. Love the keyboard.  The trackpad is fair but I haven't tweaked the Ultranav settings yet.  Been using a mouse mose of the time. I have several ThinkPads and I think the T420 is an excellent balance of power and features.  I am comparing it to my X301, T410s, T61p and W510.  I added a 34mm USB 3.0 ExpressCard (still testing). After my experience with the W520 random shutdowns, I won't be totally comfortable with this machine for a couple of months but it's looking really good so far.  I am optimistic.

Friends from Lenovo,I write you because, on August 12th, 2016, trying to install the new Windows 10 Anniversary Update, I had to do a reboot of my notebook and in the process, I lost most of the programs and drivers that use my notebook to work properly. I already installed most of the drivers I lost that day, but I still haven`t found and install the correct driver for the hotkeys of my notebook. So far, I have tried with the files r09vu09w and 8jvu43ww, but none of that files is the correct one for my ThinkPad X220 notebook, which I bought in the year 2012. Therefore, I need to ask you if you could tell me how can I get, download the CORRECT hotkey file for my notebook, so I could download it and install it on my Lenovo notebook. Friends from Lenovo, could you please tell me how can I get the correct hotkey file for my notebook Lenovo ThinkPad X220, in order to download it and install it on my notebook?THANKS A LOT FOR YOUR HELP!!!! Yours truly,Cristián Palau

Is it possible to clean the dust inside the lappy. or fans by the user itself? If skripatch is reading this could you please tell me you cpu temp when it is in idle ( just surfing) in power saver mode and in high perf mode separately?

Answer:Cleaning the dust? lenovo Y510

I read whole Ideapad section every day and sometimes Lenovo 3000. Just do not have time sometimes to reply. I try to reply every case I can handle... Mine is about 55-60 permanently (CPU).To clean dust you have to vent it by pressed air or take off that part of Y510 that s above cooler. Usually I vent cooler once a month - that's more than enough.

Hi. I was wondering if you recommend cleaning under touchpad. After a year some dirt accumulated under my touchpad. Sometimes when I have wet hands drops of water slip under touchpad as well. Hello, I have a Lenovo T400s that was full of dust, so because of high temperature and slow performance, I decided to clean the cooler all by myself. After carefully removing every single part, I managed to reach the cooler and clean it. I've successfully reattached every single piece of hardware, with temperature now reaching a maximum of 70 degrees Celsius in high-performance mode. Still, there are a bunch of issues that I'm yet to repair: 1. The overall performance of the laptop is slower than before, with the browser and all the other apps clearly slowed down by something, even after starting the laptop. 2. Sometimes, whenever I plug in the power cord, the laptop freezes all of a sudden. It happened to me several times either when the OS is loading or when I was working on the laptop. After I cleaned the laptop, I got an error saying "Plugged in, not recharging," but I've fixed it by removing and reconnecting the battery. 3. The Bluetooth adapter doesn't seem to work anymore. Whenever I try to connect a Bluetooth mouse, the laptop freezes. Any idea on the source of these problems and how could I fix them? Thanks in advance. I'm running Winodws 8 and the standard hardware configuration of the laptop, with no upgrades.

Hi whitecheese131,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Check if you have active warranty for your tech support in warranty service.
Else review your system manual that can be downloaded from the support site for your model and check if there is also a module available from service training. With an air compressed can, you can blow dust particles safely from the sytemboard and filters.

Highlighted links can help as reference guide on opening the chassis and if you lack tools then a service center nearest you may be a better option.

Hope this help answer your query.

On the shop's website it is stated that opening my laptop will result in warranty being voided. On the other hand, taking my laptop for dust cleaning to a certified service can last for even two weeks. I remember taking my previous PC for CPU cooler change and it was there for 2 weeks. What I wanted to do was clean the cooler of the CPU and see if the WiFi antenna was maybe unplugged because I was having almost no signal. I did open it *carefully* without even scratching a screw, cleaned the cooler, noticed that the main wire of the WiFi card was unplugged, while the auxiliary one was plugged correctly, plugged it back and closed the laptop, again, *carefully*. Can any of this void my warranty? Also, I planned to swap the HDD with an SSD I've had for some time. Could that represent a problem because I am changing some parts.I am not a certified servicer but I can certainyl say that I'm experienced enough to even disassemble the whole laptop and put it back again (no, I haven't done this nor do I plan to) without leaving a mark so why would opening it void my warranty if I make no damage to it.I just want to know whether I still have my warranty. Thank you in advance.

Answer:Will opening my Lenovo Z50-75 and cleaning it void my warranty?

Hi MrVene ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

In general sense , cleaning or opening the chassis or upgrading would not void the warranty as long as there won't be any induce damage to the parts during and after such change. (additional reference discussion here and here )

For the same reasons why OEM have the hardware manual dissassembly guide made available for free download and Lenovo Service Training . This may also be different on regional basis so having technical support informed first is still the best way to proceed so that proper guidelines are checked and that there is documentation for both party to reference.

Hope this help answer your query.

If you find that your fan is running more often or at higher speeds than it used to, or your system is running warmer than it used to, it could be a sign that the fan and heat sink could be clogged with dust or lint.  As air is drawn in from the bottom on these systems and then blow through the fins of heat sink before exiting on the left side of the system, just or lint may be drawn in more frequently if the system is frequently operated on a bed, blanket or other cloth surface, or in a dusty environment. If your system is out of warranty and might be running warmer than normal as described above, you might clean the fan and heat sink to lower system fan speeds and operating temperature. First, remove AC and battery and turn system over.  Locate the fan cover.  Remove the 2 screws and lift up the cover from the edge. Next, remove the 3 screws marked by the arrows to remove the fan - carefully locate and uplug the fan connector from the system board as you lift it out.  After removing the fan, it should look like this...  Using a can of compressed air, blow out the area, blow the dust out of the fan. Clean out the heat sink fins by blowing air through the outside vents so that the dust is blow back toward the the fan locations.  Make sure the fins are all free from lint, fibers and dust.  After all dust has been cleared out, carefully reinstall the fan and 3 mounting screws.  A magnetic screwdrive... Fan IssueI've cleaned my laptop sometime this month after about two years of use. Popped it open, blew everything, popped it back. I saw a post before posting this about removing the battery before cleaning so i'm considering going back and doing that. I usually keep it running in high performance because I use it for gaming. Core/CPU usage is almost never above 10%, currently sitting at 2%-4%. Memory is usually high because I only have a 500GB SSD, currently at 58%. The other stats (disk, network, and GPU), sit at 0 (although GPU will boost to about 60% when gaming). Currently, I have it in balanced mode and set the maximum core usage to 40% and it's still going strong. Any suggestions?  Gaming IssueAlso on a side note, if anyone can assist me with a gaming issue I'm having. My computer has a 960 GTX, i74720GQ @ 2.6GHz, and 500 GB SSD (samsung evo--upgraded from 1TB HD) and I'm having issues with my FPS in-game. It locks at 30 or FPS across all games. I do have two GPU's (integrated and 960 GTX) and have always used the GTX as the primary source, uncapped in-game graphics, limited background interference (services, programs, etc.) and possibly other things I can't think of but cannot release the in-game FPS cap. Even when settings are at the lowest settings. In previous times, if I were to uncap, it'd reach above 60 easily consistently but now when it's uncapped, it never goes above 60. One might ask what changed? After upgrading from HDD to SSD, I had to reset my ... Read more

I purchased a brand new Lenovo ThinkPad SL510 a few months ago and I voluntarily purchased the three-year extended warranty because I had heard such great things about Lenovo's repair services and warranty services.  Many people had told me that the warranty services were top-notch and frustration free.  Not true so far in my experience.  First, the screen crack started out as a hairline crack.  I did not drop the laptop or in any way cause the problem.  It just appeared one day and then got worse.  I spoke with Lenovo and they sent me a box to send it to them for the repair, but then they sent it back to me unfixed.  They did not even attempt to fix the crack and told me that they would require my credit card number to repair the screen and that it would cost no less than $900.  This is nearly twice the price of the laptop itself as purchased new.  The Lenovo technician apparently thought that I had caused the crack in the screen and nothing I said could change the technician's false belief that the problem had actually occurred through no fault of my own and might actually be a manufacturer's problem.  I am not happy with Lenovo's handling of this matter so far and wanted to see if others had had similar problems.  Another problem is that if Lenovo does not fix the laptop, then I have a 2 and half year remaining warranty that I paid for that will now be for a laptop that does not even work.  I am now stuc... That indicates that the device is bios and harddrive locked, so unless someone tells you the pasword that is on the machine or someone at lenovo is willing to provide a special service for you, I believe you have been dupped. There is nothing to do when this level of security has been applied. If this security screen is the very first thing you see when you boot the laptop, there is nothing that can be done aside from maybe replacing the system board.

Question: Lenovo ThinkPad 8.

It just arrived. For anyone in Canada who is interested in getting one go to the Lenovo.com/ca site. That's where I ordered it from . It took longer than expected. 17 days. The packaging is very nice. It's black and red. The contents are very basic coming with a wall charger and micro usb 3 wire. They do ship it in a protective sleeve which is nice but it's not something that is meant to be carried around. It also has the standard office product key with the paperwork. So far I'm having a good initial experience. Like normal it is going through the onslaught of updated that comes with Windows.
One quick point. You have to plug it in before you can turn it on and do the initial start up.
Any chance of getting a Lenovo ThinkPad 8 tablet page?

Only R500 have the displayport on the laptop, the R61 only have vga, which requires an advanced mini dock to obtain the DVI function even though you have an integrated graphics card. Or alternatively you can get a Lenovo usb2dvi for the dvi output function (WUXGA).

My laptop has presence of electricity current in all external metal parts (e.g. hinges), even when running on battery. I discovered this when I started getting minor shocks. Then I used a tester screwdriver to confirm - and it glowed when applied to each metal part.Is this a normal phenomenon? If not, what could be the cause, and what the remedy?Any information or guidance will be much appreciated.

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad T61

My first guess is that you're using a generic ac adapter, or a faulty one. If that's the case, get a new (real) one. If not, then you have something very wrong that needs to be addressed, I'd rather not guess at it, but a properly grounded device should never do this.

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad

First thing I would test is the hard drive, but as you cannot get into the Bios to change the boot order you will have to remove the drive and link it up to a desktop PC using a "Laptop Hard Drive Adapter". Then you can download the diagnostics for Windows from the manufacturers site listed below.

Have you tried to boot from the OS disc? Do you have Recovery Discs?

I was wondering if the GPU is MXM for future reference, because I do C.A.D work and sometimes for me the GPU breaks. And if a or b if possible. New to the forums and getting the P50 soon. I had one a long time ago, loved it, so when I searching for good workstation laptops decently priced as of April 1,2016 it is the best. (Note: Not an April fools joke) -Thanks for your time, ThinkPad_Pro

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad P50 MXM?

I believe the P70 has a removable MXM, but the video card in the P50 is soldered to the mother board.

After a routine Trend Micro Internet Security scan it discovered I had Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive (not C:\). So I made visible 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' in order to delete those files. But when I clicked on the System Restore directory on the affected drive I got an Access Denied warning. Even after making the drive readable I got the same warning and cannot open the directory to delete the bad files. So I did a System Restore flush then rebooted to Safe Mode to proceed with the "Malware Cleaning Guide" cleaning. The first scan with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware showed no vulnerabilities. Then the online scan from Panda showed the same Trojans lodged in Restore File of axillary drive. But then the log file from the Panda scan would not save to my computer. Am currently running the online Kapersky scan and online Trend Micro Housecall then will continue with rest of "Malware Cleaning Guide". But wanted to give this early heads-up.

System Restore has the ability to be turn off for separate drives or all drives. What did you use? Also the auxiliary drive (if removable) needs to be plugged in while you do this.

Hello,

I'm having a temperature problem and I don't have any experience in cleaning laptops and understanding when and how to do it. As far as I know, the problem is that my laptop is getting quite hot and I'm using it a lot, gaming included.

I'm going to post a couple of screenshots and a photo.

This is the temperature when I'm gaming, but sometimes it gets much hotter.

This is my fan outlet, as you can see, it has accumulated a lot of dust.

I hope that someone could help and maybe explain what does affect the computer's temperatures and how to clean this particular fan outlet. Oh, and maybe the fan itself has a lot of dust? I don't know. I have only removed the cover once, trying to clean the same fan outlet that you see (then it had much less dust in), but I couldn't figure out how, because it has some kind of cloth-like material glued to the case and I didn't wan't to rip it off, so I left it uncleaned.

The last bit of information I want to provide in this post is that I bought this laptop on January of 2015, and I did have a period, when I was using it on my bed (without any cooling pad or hard surface), but then I stopped doing that and bought a cooling pad. Which was too small for me and after a couple of months usage I gave it away, now I'm left without a cooling pad, but ... Read more

I am going to be upgrading to a newer laptop, i currently have a t41 and the hardware is starting to fall behind pretty good. I was thinking of getting a thinkpad t400 but wasn't sure if that i did buy one used, that they are still going to perform well. I found a t400 with a docking station for 350 dollars, it has the core 2 duo t9400 and i believe this has the 6mb cache, which is pretty good. Also has the ati graphics hd 3400 series 256mb. It also has the finger print reader and a web cam, which i wouldn't really use. Also I heard that some of the t400/500 had a screen flickering issue and was wondering if there ever was a fix to that or a way around it. According to what i found on lenovo's site is that it said the problem will only be visable on the intel graphics but wouldn't not show if i use the ATI graphics chip. It also has 4gb ddr3 i think, and expandable to 8gb. Has 160gb sata hdd which i can upgrade too if i want. So do you think that its a good deal for 350 dollars or should i go and try to buy a brand new laptop. I saw an hp for 430 dollars, and had an amd apu quad core that actually kept up with the core i3 in a similar priced laptop, but they are so flimsy these days, that im affraid ill break them, then the laptops that may have better quality new is too far out of my budget.Oh and I mainly just use my laptop for basic stuff, i guess you can say, i usually run multiple windows up at once and watch video's and run programs here and there along with browsing th... Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T400

That T400 is set up pretty much the way mine is.  So far, it's been a great machine - once I got Vista off of it and installed Win 7.  IIRC I paid around $1500 for mine w/no docking station.

How old is that T400?  Is there any warranty left?  Warranty follows S/N with these machines, not ownership.

Before Lenovo, I had a ThinkPad for which it was easy to find and download helpful downloads. Most were nice extras.
I've just bought a newer recondtioned Lenovo ThinkPad, but I find it almost impossible to identify which downloads apply to my machine. How to get them is even worse. Is there an easy way, or do I just forget the benefits IBM used to give? Wish I'd got an HP or something with good download sites. Any ideas for an easy way with Lenovo? You need to be a computer tech to use the download area I found. Maybe Lenovo wants to sell to techs, not folk like me.

Answer:Lenovo ThinkPad Downloads

What is the model number of the Thinkpad you have? I looked at the Lenovo download site, it doesn't look too hard to navigate. It asks you for your model number then shows you what downloads are available for whatever OS you are using. Is this the site you are talking about? Lenovo Support

Hello, I am student and a thinkpad enthusiast.I was looking at the x1 laptop when it came out in the US, with 1199dollar pricing. To my disappointment I couldnt get it shipped to Finland, so I waited a while until it was released in Europe aswell. However, the pricing is very high for the same laptop: 1650dollars! - 450dollar difference And this is with the same exact parts! With i7, 256gb ssd, QHD (nontouch) screen it's already 2400dollars in Finland! while in the US it's 1870!-650 dollar difference   why such a big difference? I am pretty sad about this, and it forces me to consider a competitors laptop.

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad x1 3rd gen Pricing

I'm not an expert on international pricing, but my guess is that the difference is due to the VAT.

I've formatted the laptop and it worked great, but I saw that there was no wireless card and opened it to insert. I put a card from Dell laptop and when I turn on laptop, I got this error:

ERROR 1802 Unauthorized network card is plugged in - power off and remove the miniPCI network card.

I searched the internet and I saw that for this error, solution is updating/flashing bios with "whitelist removal". I did it and turn on the laptop and it worked normally, until I unplug the charger.
Whenever I unplug it from the charger, laptop shut down immediately, just like it is without the battery in it. I tried to get back the original bios, but still the same. It shut down in Windows (7 32bit), in Safe Mode and in Bios.
So the laptop is running great when I plug charger, battery shows a 100%. Previously battery held around 2-3h.

Solution ?

Hey everyone,
I recently ran into the issue that the backlight on my Lenovo Thinkpad W520 for the display wont light up ( i took the LCD and shined a flashlight behind it to ensure that it was being digitized which it was). It worked fine one day until I turned on the laptop and the screen was black. I have reseated all the RAM, bought new cables for the display, a new inverter for the display, and even a new screen. I have unplugged the CMOS battery to reset the BIOS, and tried holding the power button for long amounts of time with the battery and power cord disconnected. Holding the power button down and restarting fixed my Thinkpad T410 when the same issue happened 3 times before, but it wont fix this issue. All of this never happened on the T410 for the 2 years I had Windows 7 on it but now both machines run Windows 10 Pro. I removed the hard drive from the W520 just in case it was a problem with the drive. Also I am testing the screen with the laptop display assembly disassembled. Please help, I am lost as to what I can do.

Hi Guys, I am new to the forum and have only recently purchased my Lenovo Thinkpad T430. I am looking to add an internal SSD and move the factory sitted HDD to the ultrabay port. Just want to confirm with you kind people what I have purchased will indeed get the job done. I have ordered this SSD: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191256143695?_trksid=p2060778.m2763.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT and this ultrabay caddy: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/350495387260?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Will this be sufficient for the job I am looking to carry out? I currently have 8GB of RAM and plan to upgrade this to 16GB in time. Any advice greatly appreciated. Ryan

Answer:Lenovo Thinkpad T430

Welcome to the forum.

Yes that SSD and Ultrabay adapter will work just fine.

A couple of comments.
1. While 64GB is enough for the OS and some apps it's a bit tight IMO. SSD prices have been falling. Consider a 120GB or even 240GB drive. That way you can run the T430 without the HDD in the Ultrabay if necessary. I do that when I travel so that there are no moving parts to get damaged by inadvertent shocks.
2. Another option to consider is an mSATA SSD to go into the WWAN socket. This would let you keep the existing HDD where it is and leave the Ultrabay available for the DVD or even another SSD/HDD.

Hi everyone. I have a lenovo thinkpad 2 that displays three error codes: 0183, 0188 and 2201 when I boot up. I don't care about these errors as they are not causing any problems. I simply want to bypass this error screen at bootup. Is there a way to do this? Thanks in advance. Plus I'm sorry if this is the wrong section to post for tablets.

Don't think this is for your specific model (you never posted your model), but I'll assume that the error codes would be the same or similar for all Thinkpads.
