Windows Update (Win 8 Pro) - Am I Missing Updates?

Question: Windows Update (Win 8 Pro) - Am I Missing Updates?

hi guys

It seems that I am missing at least one important security update for Windows 8 pro. I checked with my friend and he said he had a security update that I didn't have. He has windows 8 too. I waited for a few days and my windows update still hasn't received it. Here's the last couple of updates i have received and installed successfully:

Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB2690729)
Microsoft Silverlight (KB2668562)
Marvell - LAN - Marvell Yukon 88E8071 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller
LSI - Network - LSI PCI-SV92PP Soft Modem
Security Update for Windows 8 for x64-based Systems (KB2753842)

the first one for Microsoft Silverlight was installed the 28th of this month. and the last one the security update for windows 8 was installed the 20th of this month. i'm worried about all this cause i thought these windows updates were installed more timely than this especially since Windows 8 is still relatively new. Can someone offer any advice?

thanks in advice.

Preferred Solution: Windows Update (Win 8 Pro) - Am I Missing Updates?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I couldn't remember this login, so I created a new 1, hamluis said it's best to post on old account and he would try to link them or just delete the new 1, which is DumbBlonde1. Gringo assisted me last year during my ZeroAccess Rootkit Infection, and my PC ran like a charm after that until now.

But here are my current issues:

Randomly I get a rotary dial from the PC, usually that happens when the PC is in SLeep Mode and doesn't want to revive.

Malwarebytes no longer updates automatically and neither does MSE.

When trying to run Windows Update I receive a error message, trying to correct it I can not, because the BITS is missing. Although in MTB it does not show a BITS issue

Hamluis had me do thus far the following:

I was told to try and post in here to see if any experts here can diagnose a possible issue with my Windows Updates behaving oddly. They think that, while my Windows Update is saying it's up-to-date, it really isn't and is skipping updates.

Here is the reference thread: Daily BSOD: 0x133, MsMpEng.exe SINGLE_DPC_TIMEOUT_EXCEEDED

In summary: I am having BSoD problems, possibly something to do with a USB device. The BSoD is usually reporting a DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION, error code 0x133 and it happens sporadically, but relatively consistently. We're still working on debugging the issue and trying things, but one problem of note has been that my relatively new and fresh install of Windows doesn't seem to be grabbing as many updates as are expected.

There are quite a few files attached to the parent post linked above, but I'll insert my windows update logs here for reference:

I have just run Windows Update and installed all updates it has suggested. I have no hidden updates and it says that everything is up-to-date.

I have been attempting to install Windows Updates as well as the Windows 10 upgrade over the last few days but each time the Update gets stuck at "Checking for updates". I haven't seen any error codes however it was stuck at this status for 8+ hours today. I have attempted to install updates via the standalone installer as well and that gets stuck at "Searching for updates on this computer".

Answer:Windows Update Stuck at Checking For Updates - Missing Manifest Files

Am getting the same and mine is for a fresh installation of 7 as I had a problem with mine so have nothing installed yet apart from the IE11 upgrade.
Someone mentioned in another forum that there are some fixes (in the shape of some KB to install first) but I don't seem to be able to find them.
Will do more research.
Could be the servers are having problems of course..

As a simple FYI to those who aren't yet privy to this fun tidbit, I'm going to paste-in a reply I just typed in response to another poster.

In short, this is how to clear (safely) your Windows/MicrosoftUpdate cache (or, simply-put, a history of logged updates, which suggests progression and no need for prior updates.)

Let it be said that even though Vista is a secure, great OS overall, sometimes one needs to be sure they've got all their "hotfixes," etc. Here is my method, which I verified with MS Tech Support as a valid/safe one. I hope someone out there benefits from this as I have:

if you're having problems with Windows/MicrosoftUpdate, it's a good (and safe) idea to clear your Update Cache. This does NOT delete hotfixes. It simply saves disk space and allows Windows to do a fresh scan for missing or overlooked updates. Vista is a great OS, but it's imperfect. Here are the steps:

1.) Go to Start / Accessories / Command Prompt (CMD)
2.) Right-click on the icon for CMD and choose RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR.
3.) Now, we'll shut down the 3 locking handle-type services tied-into WindowsUpdate so you can manipulate the folder. However, you'll definitely want to be ready. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution. DO NOT OPEN THE FOLDER. Just keep this handy.
4.) In your "elevated" Command Prompt (run as administrator,) type each of the following verbatim with no quotes:

a.) net stop wuauserv (wait for response)
b.) net stop... Read more

I recently (one week ago) made myself a dual-boot to Windows Vista SP2. I installed everything I needed and set the Windows updates to Automatically install updates. When I needed to make a video smaller (no need to talk about this in this thread) on Handbrake it said I needed Microsoft .NET Framework 4.0. I was surprised to see that. I went to see what Windows updates does and it wasn't checking for updates, as I set it to do. I started the check myself. I left it like that 30 minutes. When I closed my game, it was in the same state: checking for updates. So, I went to my .NET Framework 4 installer and, after 15 minutes, it gave an error: another installer is running. There were no installers, besides Windows update. So, I closed its process and let the installer run. After 15 minutes, it gave me an error (I don't remember the name of the error, I'll post it ASAP). So, I started researching, tried everything (MS FIXIT 50202, reset windows update history, reregister windows update components which gave me error 1060 and error 5 - error 5 is after trying MS FIXIT). I tried to "force" the .NET Framework 4 install by installing it step-by-step: 1.1  1.1 SP1  3.5  4. No succes. I AT LEAST need to install that .Net Framwork somehow. And the most interesting part is that my antivirus doesn't say that my OS is not up-to-date . SPECS: 6GB RAMAMD Athlon ll X4 750K 3.2-4.0 GHzAMD Radeon R7 240 4GB GDDR3

Answer:Windows update stuck at Checking for updates and can't install updates manually

Now it doesn't even give the error anymore. It just sits there and fake-installing .Net Framework.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

Answer:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... This girl on our floor is getting all of the symptoms of the good ole blaster worm and it's 1 minute to reboot issues. I figured I could just windows update until I fix it.
So I install the updates. They install fine, no errors, and windows update says they're installed. Reboot, the same updates are listed. Try once again, and again it says the same ones are listed after I reboot. So I try through automatic updates, and, once again, the same thing. The updates just aren't installing besides saying that they are installed.
I then download the stand-alone blaster worm patch. Run it, and right after I click "I Agree" and hit next, the window just closes, no errors or anything. Try again, same thing. Try in safe mode, same thing.
I've never had a problem with this before, does anyone have any recommendations?

Answer:Windows Update installs updates, but they're still listed under updates

I had the same thing on a system I was working on. I ran Spybot and Ad-aware and cleaned off so much crap... But I had to let Spybot start at reboot to catch the app-killer. Try that and see if you can get those updates to take. It may be some nastiness in the box. Umm, no pun intended.

i upgraded from win 7 to win 10 in early august. no problems. i've been installing all updates since then and installed updates always showed status of updates. after installing fall update i noticed my update history was erased and any updates since, like defender definition files, don't appear in the list. only one update is listed: Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3103688) installed on 11/14/2015.

I would like to delete the failed updates list in Windows 7 Update.  I have done this in the past but forget exactly the process.

I think you go to Windows Folder-Software Distribution.  After deleting everyhting in the folder., i think you are to restart the computer.  Once finished the list of updates in Windows Update will be cleared.

Please correct if I am wrong.  Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Answer:Failed Updates in Windows Update. Want to clear update list?

This is the way I suggest :

Go to start > type in cmd > right click at cmd.exe > Run as Administrator.

Type in "net stop WuAuServ" without quotes > hit enter.

Type in "start %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore" without quotes > hit enter. A folder will come up. Don't close that black window.

Rename file "DataStore" to "DataStoreold" without quotes.

Go to that black screen, Type in "net Start WuAuServ" without quotes > hit Enter. After it finished you can close it.

Now your Windows Update logs will now cleared.

Thank you.

So, I don't really know any details of what malware I may have on my computer other than its symptoms and the likelihood that it came through utorrent (which has since been taken off the computer). Basically, the problem began manifesting itself with the BSOD in Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit. I think I have taken care of that problem. The remaining symptoms of the malware are that windows and windows defender cannot update itself. Also, I cannot download any type of anti-virus update software or even the programs themselves. The updates just say they were unsuccessful. When I attempt to do a manual install/update of anti-virus or windows updates I get a "cannot connect to webpage". Sometimes, I will be redirected from an anti-virus download site to a random unaffiliated site. When I attempt to run a free online virus scan, the update will not work and therefore there is no ability to scan.

Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Eric

After installing Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on a new seagate 320 g hdd on a Toshiba L300 Laptop with 32 bit that had Vista with latest SP on a 120gb hdd.then installing the sp1, the windows updater will not download and install updates. As it was I had to manually download the sp1 to a flash drive from my desktop and put it on the laptop. No problems there, but was hoping it would solve the Update problem, but didn't. I get the "Fail" error codes. 1. 80070570 and 2. 8007001F. I have 52+ KB updates and not one of them will download and install. Called MS help and for two days they had me try different things. They even took control of the computer and couldn't figure it out. I checked memory and did a chkdsk on the new HDD. In desperation for trouble shooting I put the Vista HHD back in and ran updates with no problems at all then I reinstalled the 320 G HHD. I didn't have a BSOD at all. But I downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials and when I did that I would get the BSOD for what ever reason. I had a hard time getting it uninstalled because as soon as you would start windows, within a few seconds I would get the BSOD. When I finally got the Security Essentials uninstalled the BSOD Went away. Have no Idea what one had to do with the other. I just want to get the updater to work. Any Help
Thanks

What???

That makes zero sense.

one thing at a time.

Which computer do you want to install Win 7 on?

Do you have license?

One license = 1 machine.

Hello,
I read an article that said Windows 10 had 11 updates since the end of July.
Below is the list of updates:
? Aug. 5, CU 1 = KB 3081424
? Aug. 12, CU 2 = KB 3081436
? Aug. 14, CU 3 = KB 3081438
? Aug. 18, CU 4 = KB 3081444
? Aug. 27, CU 5 = KB 3081448
? Sept. 8, CU 6 = KB 3081455
? Sept. 15, CU 6.1 = KB 3095020 (for Russian, Bulgarian, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Mongolian, and Tajik locale tags)
? Sept. 30, CU 7 = KB 3093266
? Oct. 13, CU 8 = KB 3097617, revised on Oct. 16
? Oct. 20, CU 9 = KB 3105514
? Oct. 29, CU 10 = KB 3105210, which is dated Oct. 27, but wasn't actually released until Oct 29

A review of the updates done on my computer showed that I had 7 updates done.
They are the ones in BLUE color.
I cannot find the 4 updates in RED color on my computer. Do I need these 4 updates, and if so, how do I get them for my computer ?

Thank You Very Much,
Dannyb

Answer:Missing some Windows 10 updates

This is not an answer , but another question that may be helpful to me.
Since the very last update (Oct. 29, CU 10 = KB 3105210, which is dated Oct. 27, but wasn't actually released until Oct 29) on my computer was successful , does that mean that all the updates for Windows 10 (from KB 3081424 up to KB 3105210) have been successfully installed on my computer.
In other words, are ALL the updates for Windows 10 in KB 3105210 ??
Thank You Very Much,
dannyb

For a single PC I can go ahead and turn the message off in the Action Center.
Any help with registry edit?

I am using Windows Update API (WUApiLib) in C# to get available updates. And it appears that it displays some driver updates while Windows Update application tells that the device is up to date.

It returns me this (I'm using ASUS laptop):

Is there a way to enable these updates via Windows settings? Also ESET reported me these updates as not installed?

Hey wondering on what the best method is for adding missing drivers and Windows 7 Pro updates. This used Laptop came with a fresh install of 7 Pro without any driver or Windows updates. Is the best solution to start off with drivers, or to install windows updates first ?

Also do I let windows try to find the drivers for me ? Or is it better another way ?

Anything I have to look out for? I hope its easy as it sounds. Normally my computers in the past have Factory Settings which include a fresh install with original drivers. I'm sorta new to this type of fix. I only installed graphic drivers in past from scratch.

Any help much appreciated, Thanks in advance...

Answer:Windows 7 driver and updates missing

I would do Windows Updates first and then do manufacturer driver updates after. That way it will prompt you if the manufacturer driver is newer/older.

I'm running Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Build 17063.rs_prerelease.171213-1610. Starting with the last release (I don't know the number. It was the one that I received immediately after that Fall release was official), the Windows Store (Is it called the Microsoft Store, now?) is completely missing. If I try to launch any Windows Store apps, they're missing as well. This includes the calculator and the feedback hub.If I type "calc" into Cortana and click on the "Calculator+HD: Install App" that appears, I get the message: "You'll need a new app to open this: ms-windows-store". If I go into settings:Windows Insider Program and click on the "Give us feedback" link, it says "You'll need a new app to open this: feedback-hub"I thought that perhaps the first preview after the Fall release had the store intentionally absent for updates. I it seems strange that it would still be missing with the latest update and that the Feedback Hub is missing from the Insider's Program.I have tried numerous things that I have found online, including WSReset.exe, without any changes in the problem.

I recently built a computer with the help of a friend. He has left now, and I am left with some problems. It's running on Windows 7, and it's 64 bit. The problems I am having include the following...
1. Whenever I check for windows updates, it never finishes checking for them
2. I bought and downloaded Witcher 3. It requires GOG Galaxy. GOG Galaxy can't seem to download Visual C++ 2013 or 2015.
I beleive that if the first problem is solved, the second problem will also be solved, but I'm not sure.

This could be the result of a recent barrage of virus attacks. At any rate the red warning shield icon continues to be visible at the bottom claiming windows updates is turned off, yet when I go to the control panel it is clearly on. When I try to download updates from the microsoft site I keep getting error messages. I decided to look in the services list (run > services.msc) and could not find automatic updates in there. I went into the command window, typed 'net stop wuauserv' and the response I got was 'does not exist as an installed service'. So now what? All other computer operations are functioning normally
I have attached system info as a text document

Hello all,
I am not sure if this is the correct place to post this problem, but this problem has almost made my crazy.

My PC configuration: ausu p8z77-v pro, i5-3570k, OCZ vector 128Gb as system drive, G.Skill 1866GHz 8G RAM, Bios updated to latest version.

The problem is: Just after the fresh installation, everything seems to be fine, wondows boot without any problem. Then it reminds me to install over 100 updates, including os security updates, .net updates, etc.

After installed the updates, restarted, I encountered this ci.dll missing problem. I m not able to boot into the system.

Things I have tried: 1. Reinstall: I tried to install win 8, win 8.1, win 7 ult, win 7 pro. All failed the same way, missing or corrupt ci.dll.
2. Anti-virus: I tried many different Anti-virus software, didnt fiund any virus.
3. Hardware: this is a month new system. I suppose it should be fine.

Now I suspect that it is one of the updates causing the problem, probably the .net 4.0.

I really need some help with this, I have reinstalled the system more than 10 times over the past week.....

thank you all.

Have you "reinstalled" or "repair" installed? Big difference. If you have not truly "reinstalled", that would be a good starting point.

I am having a problem uninstalling some updates that were automatically installed by windows because the section that contains those updates in "Installed
Updates" is just missing. Normally you would go to Control Panel > Uninstall a Program > View Installed Updates then you would see a list trees with updates in each section. The section for Microsoft Windows isn't there. I'm not skipping over it,
it's just not there.

Example of not showing the section for Microsoft Windows:

Example of showing the section for Microsoft Windows:

I am running windows 7 on a domain environment. I am trying to uninstall IE11 update to revert back to IE9 (this was previously installed). My hunch is that this is a group policy setting somewhere, but haven't found anything pertaining to this yet.

I am one of two admins for the company. This is actually happening to all the computers that I've checked, so I assume it's a systemic
problem.

I have been working on a new pc today that I needed to create an image for and noticed it isn't having the issue yet. However, a computer I recently imaged (Tuesday) is already having the problem.

I did gpupdate /force on the new pc without the issue, and it still is working fine. I'm starting to wonder if it may be a side effect of using sysprep on the machine before putting it into service. Once I'm done with this new pc image I will sysprep it
and watch for any changes.
Any help is appreciated.

Hi team, and especially NoelDP.

I have eleven CSI payload files missing, and NoelDP, I see you have been able to help a lot of people find these files and re-install them on their system. I have attached a copy of CheckSUR.log, as well as a CBS.log from a SFC scan I ran today.

If you could help me find these files that would be amazing, so that I can finally install Windows 7 SP1!

Thanks in advance,

Hi, I am trying Windows 7 professional 64bit is trying to update my PC now for the umpteenth time. I ask it to download and update. It tells me that it has updated and needs to restart. When it restarts, it has a couple of attempts at configuring the updates and lets me use Windows. When I turn my PC off, I get a 'Do not turn off, etc'. When I start my PC and check to see if the install worked, I am told it hasn't, any clues please?

Answer:Windows 7 updates don't update

I have been through this today and fixed mine.
There are ways MS suggests when you right click on the failed updates and read the help files that contain links to MS downloadable tools of sorts.
After reading about and trying some of the tools with no success I took a hint I read between the lines about running the one with "service pack" in its name alone. I had 10 updates available one of which had service pack in its title. It was "Security Update for Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package (KB2538243)"

I ran it alone and it took. Remaining were 4 security and 4 updates for windows and an IE9 update.

I then tried the 4 updates for windows alone and they failed.

Long story short, I tried some alone until they started working and got them all in.
Look at my screen shot and see the order in which I used. The order goes from the bottom up. The Hot Fix you see is one of MS's suggestions I tried that changed nothing.

As long as this is not every time eh?

I've updated and selected updates in this window before, suddenly I can't see any updates there at all. WU tells me there's 33 optional updates available, when I click and the window to select those and install them appears I can't see any of them. =/ Check the attachment to see what I'm talking about. What version of Windows are you running? You posted in the XP Forum, but your profile says Windows 7?
What part is ugly? This shouldn't be an issue with Windows 7. You can choose to not download the update in Windows Update and put a check in Do Not Remind Me of this Update.

Hey guys,

My problems are pretty odd. I was running a beta build of Windows 7 when my Borderlands game would start to crash and for some reason my G drive disappeared (see specs). I figured it was a compatibility issue with my drivers and the beta build, so I bought home premium and reinstalled.

My problems are as follows:
BCCode 124/Blue Screen every 10-30 minutes. It seems completely random, but the computer will just lock up and I have to manually restart.
Windows Update fails to download. I get error Code 800B0100.
My G drive has disappeared. I have tried switching SATA ports/etc.

My specs are as follows:

I am working on deploying the IE Site Discovery at my company and on the few machines I've tested against the WMI container of root\cimv2\IETelemetry does not exist despite being on IE 11 and running the latest patches directly from Windows updates.
I am specifically bypassing our WSUS server and going to Windows updates to ensure I am getting everything.
I had no issues deploying this to my home network running Windows 7 Pro and 8.1 Pro. The only major difference is the Windows 8.1 and Windows 7 Enterprise SKUs used by the OS at my company.
Is there a hotfix I can key off of that would definitely tell me I should have that WMI entry or what can I do to get that created? Until that is created I am not able to run the Enterprise Site Discovery v2.1 toolkit script.

This is the output I get currently running the powershell script.

Answer:IETelemetry WMI container missing after all Windows updates - Unable to enable Site Discovery

I found my own answer. The administrative account I was using in our test domain was not able to launch powershell "as admininistrator" due to a one way domain trust issue. Powershell would launch, but would not specify "administrator"
at the top. Once I ran with an account that did not have the trust issue, the commands went through.

The message "Working on updates 12%" has been hanging on the screen for the last 12 hours on my desktop pc.

I had the same problem, though at a different point in the update process, with my laptop.

I had to abandon the update on my laptop and reinstall.

Do I have to go through all that a gain with my Desktop?

I'm very frustrated and thinking of reverting to Windows 7.

Does anyone have some suggestions to correct the stalled update procedure.

Many thanks

Where are all these files stored( both failed and for update files)? In which folder exactly?

hi HussinBhy,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

With Windows 8 there was a certain service that has to be disabled "Nalperion Service" then proceed with the updates manually by 4 or by 5 updates only

If Windows 7, You just have to make sure your Antivirus is not blocking anything by disabling them temporarily
and most of all Try installing it by 4 or by 5 updates only,  as it may be overlapping some updates if you will install everything at same time.

I see video drive updates for both Intels GPU and Nvidia in Windows updates listed. However, nothing in Lenovo updates at all for either subsystem. The current driver date is quite old as well posted at Lenovo downloads.  This is with Win 8.1 64bit Will they work?

Answer:Z70-80 Drive Updates in Windows Update

hi tripplec,

The video drivers (Intel and Nvidia) should have no problem installing via Windows Update but I'm more concern about the switching function between the Intel and Nvidia as this unit automatically switch between the Intel GPU (for power saving) and Nvida GPU (for maximum performance).

If the drivers from Windows Updates are designed for units that uses switchable graphics / optimus technology then you shouldn't get any problems. Otherwise, you may need to rollback to the lenovo (customized) drivers for the functionality to work.

Answer:Windows Update won't install updates

Hi,
First basics:
From an admin command prompt
[Windows key + X, click command prompt (admin)]
chkdsk C: /F
Your PC will need to restart.
Make sure the result is clear or fixed- else do not proceed.
Post back the result, which you can get after a restart as follows:
How do I see the results of a CHKDSK that ran on boot? - Ask Leo!

If clear:
Then try troubleshooting:
In cortana's search box type Trouble and click Troubleshooting
In the Control Panel GUI that opens, click Troubleshoot Windows Updates
Post back the result

If that doesn't help try
Tweaking.com's cautious repair tool (free).
Observe the cautious stages, select only the Windows Update repair and run it.
Test the result and post back.

I partitioned my hard drive and installed Windows 2k on the second partition in addition to WinXP. This caused the XP bootloader to get overwriten with the Win2000 bootloader. I did a restore with the XP disk, fixing that problem. Unfortunately, this rolled my .NET back to v1, which after a bit of dll trickery, I was able to get it back to v3. However, now Windows Update can't install updates! It will download them, but when it tries to install them it fails.

The only help I can get out of the program is "winupdate failed be because of a problem with your computer."

Any ideas guys?

Hello Everyone:
I am unable to receive Windows updates. Even manual updates won't work. This seems to have started when I upgrade my Hard Drive to a Momentus xt 750GB (Hybrid Drive)

I combed the network and try all solution suggested. I reverted to drive images made at various time. No luck.

The first message when I click is Windows Update Checjk for update for your computer. Then Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer,

It doesn't appear to be a virus: Fresh installs won't clear the and my Norton has always been up to date. I even run Windows Malicious detector. Zero issues.

What I come to think of is a compatibility issue: 512b then, 4kb now? I know there has been a patch and I use routinely external HD of High capacity.

I would appreciate some help if you can. Again, I don't think it is a virus.

You said they do not download OR fail but then you said they failed, which is it?

Make sure you have restarted your computer since then. Try updating ONLY important updates, possibly selecting a few at a time to download and update. Let me know if it still fails. Restart>select some updates (important ones first, then slowly working your way to other updates you want to have installed)>installl>restart again. If it works keep doing this method

These two things likely don't have an effect on the updates, but try them anyway:

1. Do you know if you have all your drivers currently updated?

2. Has windows been activated yet?

I'm installing a new Windows XP on an old laptop, has mostly went well. After XP sp3 it installed a few updates, then took a good while, a couple of days while windows update would not give me the big list of updates, and I got frustrated, removed systemdir/softwaredistribution
and  systemdir/system32/catroot and it gave me results I think within a couple of hours.
Then I installed Office 2007. And windows update upgraded that to 2007 sp3 as well. After that, I'm having an issue with the cpu going to 100% and it's going for days and no list ever comes up again. So I tried removing those folders again, except it didn't
work this time.
So I turned on fulll windows update logs from the registry (after restarting the windows update service and requesting update now from the client),
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Trace\Flags set to 16
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\Trace\Level set to 4
and it would fill the log full the first 30 minutes, it grows some 30 MB of logs. Then nothing. It is using 100% cpu but no output.. it seems like it gets stuck in a forever loop and consumes all cpu.
Laptop is single threaded 1.7 GHz pentium M Centrino.
Since it already has all possible updates related to windows and windows update (but not office), I'm doubtful there is an update that fixes this windows update issue. I don't really understand the log, but it seems all normal, no real errors,

As of Thursday evening, Sept 28, I've read a lot about a major Windows security flaw that may just have been "fixed" by MS, necessitating downloading and installing one or more updates from the windows update site. But whenever I go to that site, either manually or with automatic updates, which I have configured to alert me but do nothing further, I ONLY get told that an update to Windows Installer 3.1 is available.

Trouble is, I've downloaded that one four times now, and it always--ALWAYS--fails to install properly. When I tried to install it manually after downloading it manually, it failed with a small error window saying "access is denied"; nothing further. I've seen that one enough, when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

But now, it seems, that's the only update MS says is available to me.

Using some good advice from an earlier msg, I ran Belarc's analysis routine. Among other things, it reported nearly 50 critical updates it could not verify had been installed.

Am I in trouble or aren't I?

What should I do?

Answer:Windows Update reports NO updates?!

Your computer specifications tell me that SP2 is installed and you said in your last post = when I had trouble installing the Windows XP Home SP2 update, that I just said "to =^(*^)(&% with it".

Question is was SP2 fully installed?

The other thing that makes me wonder is the thing about the other 50 or so updates that do not show installed in Belarc. I would like you to download this update for Belarc and install it and rerun it.

Hi HP experts. Last night i made a clean install with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit with service pack 1 included - when that said i can only see one update in installed updates, and its kb 976902. And i also installed the nessecary drivers, and Trend Micro as my Internet Security - so far so good. For about 12 hours Windows Update has now been running without finding any updates at all, and it keeps running. I have tried in Windows firewall to make a firewall rule for C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe - because i read somewhere that it might be the firewall that blocked Update - and i have tried to run the windows update diagnostic tool, and it said it solved a couple of things and then i restarted the laptop but still no luck. I hope that one of you can help me on the way to a functioning Windows Update, so do any of you have a solution ? It would be very much appreciated. Also i have to say that i have a reserve laptop, where i for a long time ago also made a clean install with windows 7 home premium 64 bit, and on that one it takes a very long time to run update also, but a least it finds something. Hi everyone,

Hope you guys won't mind helping me with this issue. I have Windows Vista 32 bit Home Edition.

I recently noticed that it's been 2 weeks since my laptop scheduled an auto installation of windows updates on Sundays so I decided to check if any new ones were available. When I clicked on Check For Updates, I received the following message:

"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer."

I restarted but nothing changed. I also went into the settings and selected never update, applied, then exited, then went back and re-selected auto update and install and applied but again, the same result.

I have no idea how to restart or reset the windows update so it will work.

I would really appreciate if you could please help me correct this problem.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to your replies.
Best regards!

I get this message when I check for updates....
"Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer"

The Check for Updates option in the Windows Update window, has a red shield with a cross in it, and I get the "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer" message when I click the Check for Updates button.

Coincidentally, Search Indexing is also not working.

I don't know when this all started, but it seems that it may have started when I did a system clone of my original system HDD using AOMEI Backupper Professional Edition 2.2

The new HDD (which is the clone) all works fine as far as I can see, except for the two issues.

I have tried various Microsoft Fixits, Cmd processes as well as SFC, and started services in Services (Local), all to no avail.

Hi

I have recently been having problems with windows update and many other things. Basically it won't check for updates. When you click to check for updates, the bar starts but stays stuck searching. I then also notices microsoft security essentials does the same when u try and update. AVG free failed to install and I tried installing google chrome because I hate explorer and it also failed due to windows installer error. I tried manually installing service pack 2 from windows and it also failed. Nothing windows based will update.

I first noticed all this when I moved in with my girlfriend and started using her laptop. It is a decent laptop and the first thing I noticed it was a bit sluggish and I checked the CPU usage and one thing was hogging 70% all the time. It was windows error reporting or something similar which I disabled through systems, but nothing changed. Thats when I tried to update windows and it had 1 important update and 2 optional which I did. I remember one completed and 2 failed I think and after I restarted the computer the updater has not been working at all.

I got tune up utilities but it did not change anything after cleaning up various things. I also got rid one one malware thing from a free month trial with malwarebytes I think.

I have seen people talking about command prompts and cleaning registries but I cant get them to work properly.

I do not get errors report codes which is also a problem because its always frozen on checking for ... Read more

My PC (running XP) doesn't seem to want to allow installation of 3 fairly recent Windows Updates (KB840374, KB828035 and KB824141). They appear to download ok - but all fail at the installation stage. I've tried to install them all several times without success.Any clues anyone ??Many ThanksMCPR82

Answer:Windows Update - 3 Updates won't Install

Check if they are in the add/remove programs applet. If so, remove then and reboot. Then try to install them one at a time: after the first, reboot and then go for the next. Do them in order of age.

nothing serious, just a strange little problem i've noticed recently.

when clicking the start menu, I always see the icon that says an update is required on shutdown, which i click. there is absolutely no indication that any update is taking place, and when I run update manually, there is nothing available. I've tried researching similar problems but everyone seems to say that there's an update that fails for whatever reason. I do not have this issue though which is why I can't understand what's happening.

any ideas?

Hello! This is an issue that I've never come across before. When I try to update my computer (Windows 7 64bit) I get an error message stating "Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer." I already tried this before, but to my disappointment I still receive the message. Can anyone help me solve this issue? Thanks! If anyone needs any further information, please do ask. I'm a bit of a rookie though, haha.

BEFORE doing anything drastic such as resetting WU, try this -

Windows Update Settings - Change

Open Windows Update
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Never Update...'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Now open Windows update again
Click on Change Settings
Select 'Update automatically'
Click OK
exit Windows Update
Open Windows Update, and do a manual Check for Updates.
