Laptop Touchpad and Keyboard Don't Work

Question: Laptop Touchpad and Keyboard Don't Work

I just swapped a hard drive from a laptop with a busted screen to a laptop that works fine. Well, it did work fine until I activated Windows. The keyboard all of a sudden stopped working and the buttons below the touchpad won't work either.
I can't find any keyboard drivers for Windows 7 on Sony's website and the touchpad drivers didn't seem to work. A Windows update didn't work, either.

Sony Vaio VGN-NR498E
Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit

I desperately need this laptop up and running as soon as possible.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I'm using a HP EliteBook. And recently I've been using this docking station to insert a monitor and a different keyboard to it. That worked fine until I then had to take my laptop with me and ejected it from the docking station in a hurry (while it was turned off). And now my laptop does not respond at all to neither the keyboard nor the touchpad. My wireless mouse works, so I used the screen keyboard to unlock the PC. And the question is then; how am I supposed to fix this?

Ever since I've upgraded my dad's laptop to Windows 10, the keyboard and touchpad stop working randomly, and would work only after I restart the computer. (logging off, switch user, standby mode doesn't resolve it.)
There is no pattern to it. Sometimes it would be ok for a few days, sometimes it would happen again after a few hours. I mostly do internet browsing on the laptop.

When the problem occurred:
- The keyboard AND the touchpad would both stop working at the same time.
- USB mouse still works. (I do not have an external keyboard to test)
- The lights on the keys themselves (eg caps lock, wifi) would still remain on if they're activated but cannot be toggled on/off as usual.
- The device manager still showed no problems with the mouse or keyboard.

Things I've tried:
- sfc /scannow
- disabled sticky keys
- used the generic drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- reinstalled the drivers for keyboard and touchpad
- updated to the latest synaptics driver
- made a new synaptics trackpad profile
- disabled touchpad when using the USB mouse

Laptop stats:
HP Pavillion dm1-4002AU
Windows 10 Home 64bit (upgraded from Win7 and then reset to a fresh state)
AMD Radeon HD 6230 Graphics
6GB RAM
Synaptics Driver Version: 19.0.12.95 06Jul15
Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad
Lenovo ThinkPad PS/2 keyboard

This is very exasperating. I would appreciate some help in stopping this problem permanently, thanks.

A couple days ago, my keyboard and touchpad mouse stopped working. I thought it was a hardware issue and ordered a replacement keyboard. As for the touchpad, I'm just using a wireless mouse. I replaced the keyboard a couple days later with the new one, and when I turned on my laptop, it works again, but when I put my laptop to sleep and wake it up, I hit enter, and then it stops working. I cannot type anything until I restart my computer. I figured it has to do something with the drivers, but I'm not too sure. Here is my computer specs:

Product: HP Pavilion dv9700
Model: dv9925nr
Windows 7 home premium 64bit

I've gone to the HP website to get the drivers, but they do not support windows 7 for my computer.

Hello everyone. I have one big problem. I reinstalled my 8.1 pro (legal copy, disk been fully formatted) and it was okay for few hours. Next time im starting the laptop, my keyboard and touchpad doesnt work. I plugged USB mouse and keyboard and it works just fine. I went to device manager and besides Standart PS/2 keyboard and mouse icons there was orange triangle meaning that i have problem with drivers. I searched drivers online, but unsuccsessily.. After few hours of trying to fix it, my Standart PS/2 Keyboard turned into Unknown device and now im completely lost. Adding photo of device manager, i hope someone will help me here.

Answer:8.1 pro laptop keyboard and touchpad doesnt work

Since we do not know the make and model of your laptop.
Should try the laptop manufacturer's website to see if you can find the drivers for this. Does look like there missing.

What does it tell you when you right click the ones with yellow exclamation points ?

You can right click and select update driver software, either search automatically or browse your computer, select signed driver from the list is shows you.

If the traditional BIOS update is not available on the download page the only way to get it is to contact nearest authorized service provider. They have all versions.

You may be able to fix this by minimizing the Palm Checker of the mouse settings .

The path would be :

I already have the issue that when I put my E5570 to sleep and wake it up again that the keyboard and touchpad do not work. So I have disable the sleep options in the BIOS.
Now I run into different issues.Yesterday I booted the laptop and it hang on the DELL logo, After a while it stated that my EFI file would not be correct. Force reboot and it booted straight to Windows.
What's more annoying is the fact that the laptop boot, the DELL logo is shown and then the screens go's black, as if it's not connected. SO it looks like it hangs.BUT an external monitor through HDMI does work and show the windows logon. The keyboard and touchpad also do not work.External mouse and keyboard do work.
So pretty much I got a brick when I do not have external display/keyboard and mouse available.
When I reboot the laptop it works fine again.Am I the only one with this?Loads of issues with the laptop and wondering if I just have a faulty laptop...
Clean Windows 10 Pro install is done 5 times.Used the  DELL Command Update to install all drivers and patches.Issues keep existing...

Answer:Latitude E5570 - Black display, no resons to keyboard/touchpad - External display/keyboard/mouse do work

I have been spending a lot of hours in troubleshooting this week.
Diagnostics are 100% ok.
Reinstalled Windows 10 about 15 times.Installing drivers by hands, installing drives trhough the dell update management application. The issues keeps existing.
To sum the them up:- Cold boot (laptop is off) to Windows. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and they work again)- Resume from sleep. Keyboard/Touchpad do not work. (Reboot and the work again)
After I got the laptop I installed 32Gb of RAM and an 512Gb Samsung 950Pro PCIE M.2 NVME drive. The drive should be support as Dell states on the product page and in the manual that PCIE with NVME is supported.
"Advanced features, like industry-leading M.2 SATA and M.2 PCIe/NVME solid state drives, provide data transfer speeds up to 4x faster over traditional hard drivers. "
In order to get the drive visible and running on PCIe I had to disable the sata controller in the BIOS.This way the drive is detected in Windows as an PCIe NVME capable drive.
Just to verify if the issues I went back to default with the delivered 256Gb M.2 sata drive and 8Gb RAM.To install Windows I had to turn the Sata controller back on.
Installed the drivers manually updated WIndows and tested. The issues do NOT occur.
Retested by installing the drivers using the Dell Update Application. The issues do NOT occur.
So I figured out that the SATA controller somehow is the guilty part for all the issues.I mean when enabled to ACHI or RAID the sleep and non... Read more

I don?t know what the problem is but it is not a Windows prob.
it doesn?t work either in Bios.

Answer:Satellite A80-154 - Keyboard and Touchpad don't work

Hi

It looks like a hardware problem.
If the warranty is valid you could contact the ASP in your country for a hardware check.

If the warranty is not valid you could firstly check if the keyboard cable was connected to the motherboard properly.
If it?s connected properly then a keyboard malfunction is possible and it would be advisable to check if a replacement would help to solve this issue.

The compatible parts can be ordered also from the ASP in your country.

Hey everyone! I just got a new Edge 15 yesterday (this is the Best Buy exclusive one, and it's more expensive of the two options available), but I'm having an issue with it that's really preventing me from enjoying using the machine, and it's incredibly frustrating! Whenever I press keys on the keyboard and go to use the touchpad together with it, the touchpad freezes/delays for a number of seconds. It makes it incredibly difficult to play any kind of casual game or just browse the web. I've spent a long time looking up solutions, but none of them have helped at all. This Lenovo uses the Alps driver and while it has palm tracking, turning it down to minimum doesn't fix the problem, neither does going through windows 8.1 and choosing the option to have no delay in the mouse/touchpad settings there. I have no idea what to do to fix this problem, if anyone could help that'd be amazing!

Sometimes when I start up my computer, more often than not, when it brings me to my logon screen, I can't use the touchpad or the keyboard at all.  I have to physically touch the screen to let me put my pin in.  Still, neither work, so I end up shutting down and restarting, sometimes more than once, before the touchpad and keyboard start to work again.  I've had this problem for a couple of years now, have been in touch with support, and have also uninstalled and reinstalled my keyboard.  My warranty just expired of course.  I'm ready to throw this computer out of a window.

Try http://www.laptoprepair101.com for a good desciption on how to disassemble a laptop.Be VERY careful when disassembling. They are fragile and the connections are short. The ribbon cable under the keyboard might be the problem although the USB connections are integrated on the motherboard and with your earlier problems might point to that as the cause.

I have problem with keyboard and touchpad. Laptop is Satellite A300-1G5

I have Vista home premium and when I power computer on, I must put password in user box then my keyboard and touchpad don't work.

In Bios my keyboard working but when Vista starts it does not.

How I solve this problem?

Thanks!

Answer:Satellite A300-1G5: Keyboard and touchpad do not work

Hi

First of all please check the device status in the device manager.
Please check if the keyboard and touchpad are listed correctly without any yellow exclamation marks.

But you should try to reinstall the drivers again even though the keyboard and the touchpad were recognized properly.
In this case I would recommend removing the keyboard and the touchpad from the device manager and then you should reboot the notebook once again.

After Vista has rebooted the both devices should be recognized again and should work.

Please check this!

Hello,I recently bought a new HP Pavilion 15-bc035nd (Windows 10) but I am running into a few issues with it. I own a sattelite C870-13E computer since august.

Yesterday for no apparent reason, my touchpad stopped working. (no, I didn't turn it off)
Not really bothered by it, i kept working on my computer for several hours.
It then occurred to me it might be a little bug, so I decided to restart my computer.

When it turned back on, not only my touchpad didn't work, now nothing on my keyboard responded, not a single key. I updated drivers, bios, ran a virus scan, rolled back my computer to a few days earlier, nothing helped.

The strange thing is that the keyboard still responds when i hold the 0, F1 or F8 keys, as well as enter and arrow keys to get in the menus before windows starts up.

Using those, i used the toshiba recovery to set the computer back to factory settings.
Despite all that, keyboard and touchpad are still out.
I really don't understand, since it works during startup it can't be actual materialistic damage!

Now i'm getting frustrated cause i have no more solutions and typing with on-screen keyboard is really slow! =p

Any help?

Answer:Keyboard and touchpad don't work on Satellite C870-13E

Hi

I think it?s a hardware malfunction because you already tried the system recovery and the keyboard does not work even if using factory settings.

But it would be interesting to know if the USB external keyboard would functions. Can you test this? In my opinion if the external keyboard would works properly, then this would mean that your internal keyboard is faulty and needs to be replaced.
I?m wondering if the touchpad fault is related to the internal keyboard malfunction.

However, I think the warranty should be still valid if you purchased this unit in August. So get in contact with service and the guys should fix it free of charge!

I have the same problem with a Y50-70 and ELAN Touchpad/driver too. It has been sold to me as a gaming Laptop and now one major functionality you need for gaming doesn't work - what a mess. I spend hours in the Internet reading hundreds of articles from people with the same issue.1. Solution: Disable the Palmcheck function but unfortunately the ELAN SW doesn' provide this option.2. Solution: Change the Touchpad sensibility (some say max, some min) - neither works with the ELAN driver.3. Solution: Go into the Registry (regedit) and change parameter (DisableWhenType_Enable and DisableWhenType_DelayTime_Move in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\SmartPad\), to 0 with Regedit. Didn't work for me too. 4. Solution: Uninstall the ELAN driver qnd let Windows install a generic PS2 one during re-boot. This finally did it for me, however you are losing all the additional functionality of your Touchpad and can onlwy move the cursor plus right/left click. No zoom; no scroll, no multiple finger functionality anymore. So be it, I bought the Laptop for Gaming. I'm pretty disappointed about this but hope there will be better driver coming out soon.

I am not able to type in my password nor get F1 or  F12 buttons to work (or Lenovo Care button), and can't get to BIOS. I can use the touchpad but that's all.  I can turn the computer off, restart, and put it in sleep. I did use the Rescue and Recovery Startup Disk I made and noted that kbdclass was running, kbdhid was stopped.  It seems like a hardware problem, but I have no way of checking the devices that I can figure out. I hooked up an external keyboard via USB and it didn't even light up.  What now?

Hi

There are no many options which could solve this problem.
It can be a hardware problem or software related issue.

Can you use the internal keyboard within the BIOS?
Check this.
If this would not be possible, I assume the hardware is faulty.

Additionally I recommend testing the keyboard and touchpad using the factory settings.
Recover the notebook and check if the keyboard would functions?. Otherwise you will need an helps from an notebook technician in order to replace the keyboard and touchpad

When I plug the USB mouse then the mouse works. Another problem is the bluetooth hardware is not found while installing the bluetooth driver.
Due to above reason I changed the operating system two times and install all the HP recommended drivers and softwares but still the problem is same.
So please tell me the suitable way to resolve these problems as soon as possible.

Hello, The left button on my Synaptics Touchpad doesn't work when I'm pressing a key on the keyboard. Initially, I thought it was a PalmCheck problem, but that feature was already disabled. The right click works fine and so does the touchpad itself. The only problem is the left button. I tried reinstalling an updated driver, but that didn't fix the problem. I tried the generic Synaptics driver and both the HP Windows 8 and 8.1 versions. They all worked fine for all touchpad functions except for the left button which still doesn't work when I'm pressing a keyboard key. I tried using a wireless mouse and the left click worked fine so the problem is only with the touchpad.

Hi,

this laptop Satellite L300D is not even a year old and it is giving me a heck of a lot of issues.

About 3 times a week the touchpad will just stop working (after going around crazy & clicking stuff on its own)
When I plug in a mouse it works.

Today the keyboard gave up, after a re-boot it will allow me to type in my password but after that its dead.

Please help.

Answer:Satellite L300D touchpad and keyboard wont work at all

Did you install mouse drivers for your external mouse? Sometimes they can cause problems with the internal touchpad.

Otherwise you should send the laptop to an Authorized Service Partner to get it repaired under warranty.

Hi,

My daughter's Toshiba Satellite Pro A100 has developed a couple of faults.

Firstly, the keyboard displays random characters such as a stuck key would. eg, if in Google or Wordpad the system will at random type a single character over and over again even when no key is pressed. Occasionally it will also open windows or programs as if the 'enter' key has been pressed, or cycle through desktop icons.

Secondly, the touchpad is non-responsive and cursor operation isn't possible from the touchpad or buttons. I don't know if the two are related.

She assures me she hasn't spilled anything on the laptop, so any help would be appreciated to rectify these faults.

Thanks,
Brian

Hi

Can you notice the same issue with external input devices?

If not it?s time for an authorized service provider. I think the keyboard and touchpad must be replaced and the technicians can help you.

On the Toshiba website you can find a list of authorized service provider.

Hi everyone.

I was hoping someone could help me with a problem I'm having with my Satellite 5200-802. The Keyboard will not work evn though it shows in device manager and report it as working fine. I have updated the BIOS and tried a lot of other basic stuff so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

It may be worth mentioning that I also cannot get my touchpad driver to register.

Many thanks.

Answer:Satellite 5200-802: Keyboard and touchpad dont work

Hi

Do you get an error message or do you have any bed signs on the screen?
Can you use the keyboard to access the BIOS?
If yes then the keyboard was recognized and works!

If you cannot use the keyboard running OS then I would recommend to delete the keyboard device from the device manager and to restart the notebook.
After new OS reboot the keyboard should be recognized again.

But I think that you will be not able to access the BIOS.
Due to the fact that the touchpad does not work too, I presume the hardware is faulty or there is no connection to the motherboard. Maybe a lose cable?

Maybe you should check this. But note; if you have no experience contact the notebook technicians. Bye

Answer:G550 keyboard and touchpad do not work when I remove wireless KB and mouse

hey johannfu, when you have the wireless keyboard connected, was the keyboard and touchpad working on the G550 ?if not and only the Microsoft Wireless keyboard was working, then it is a high possibility that the drivers that came from the wireless keyboard overwritten the drivers for your G550 keyboard and touchpad.

Try uninstalling those 3rd party drivers, they may be conflicting with the Toshiba drivers.

When I open up my computer and try to login, both the keyboard and touchpad no longer works.  The only thing I can do is touch the screen and hope the on-screen keyboard pops up.  but I can't use the actual physical keyboard or touchpad.  They seem disabled. I don't even see the mouse pointer arrow or icon on the login screen at all  when I try to move my hand around the touchpad now it takes me a couple tries to login abd only after I  login, the keyboard & touchpad work again Im using HP Spectre x360. I think this started happening after the last major auto update  (Also now the computer doesn't go to sleep when I close the lid,  and after a while the computer gave an alert message that the battery was low since it never went to sleep.  After this last update, the low battery alert message is now pink instead of blue )

Got a nasty surprise today - unlike the other major manufacturers, who offer one year free tech support, Lenovo does not. $179 for a contract or $89 to cover a single incident. Thanks, guys. :-/ Here's my problem. G780, bought last October. Upgraded from Win7 Home Premium to Win8 Pro.A few days ago, the built-in keyboard stopped working. It works in the BIOS, but when you boot into Windows, Windows doesn't recognize it. There is a PS/2 keyboard driver and a HID Keyboard Device that show up in the Win8 Device Manager. I'm assuming those are the drivers for the built-in keyboard. If I plug in a USB keyboard, it shows up in the Device Manager as an additional HID Keyboard Device. Through trial and error, I discovered that the keyboard still works fine when the Elan touchpad driver is not installed. The problem with THAT: I can't disable the touchpad unless the driver is installed, and if the touchpad isn't disabled, it'll screw me up because I accidentally brush my hand up against the touchpad while typing. I've also noticed that sometimes, the touchpad icon in the system tray shows up with a CAUTION icon overlaid on top of it (you know, the little yellow triangle with the exclamation point). I can't figure out why, and I can't figure out what changed on my computer that caused the keyboard to stop working properly. I've tried uninstalling the Elan touchpad driver, downloading the latest driver from the G780 support web page, and reinstalling it. No... Read more

Answer:G780 keyboard doesn't work, but ONLY when Elan Touchpad driver is installed.

hi stevesobol,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Are you also able to type your password on the login screen but after that the keyboard gets disabled? If this is the case, check this article as it's similar to the keyboard issue.

As for the Keyboard not working when the ELAN touchpad driver is not installed, this is surprising as I've never heard this issue happen before. Are you not able to disabled the touchpad via Fn+F6 even if the driver is not installed?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9300 that has a vertical and horizontal scrolling option on the touch pad. It worked fine when I got the laptop but now the scrolling doesn't work. The touchpad works, just won't scroll. I must have accidentally changed the settings or something. I've read other postings and tried to go through the control panel but there is no option for a touchpad in my control panel and I can't find anything under mouse properties that I can change to fix this. Also, my keyboard now jumps all over the place. In the middle of typing my cursor jumps to another sentence and starts putting in my letters, how is that happening? That just started, it wasn't doing that before. I've looked through downloads thinking I needed a new driver but you can't tell what is what so who knows what to download! If anyone could help me, please email me at [email protected] as I can't always find this forum. Thanks for your help!

Answer:Laptop Touchpad and keyboard

I LOVE CSI....except NY.

I have an HP laptop with scroll on the touchpad.

When I go to "Mouse" in Control Panel I see Touchpad functions and an "ALPS" logo. I assume that is because of the touchpad software installed. Perhaps you have somehow uninstalled or corrupted your Touchpad software???

As far as the cursor jumping goes...I also had that problem. It was caused by the BASE of my THUMBS touching the touchpad while I typed. I'm more careful about that now, AND I turned DOWN the sensitivity of the Pad. Hope this helps.

My lenovo laptop has a terrible beep beep sound when i start the laptop. When i type something on the internet to search or a message the line ( which blinks when we type) always goes back. So I cannot even type anything correctly. I can't move the scroll down when i am on the internet the scroll goes up again. i need help.

Answer:Lenovo G570 beeps constantly on start up - keyboard and touchpad don't work properly

Shanuka,
Welcome to the forum!

Would you turn off the system and restart and see if you can go into BIOS?   If you get the constant beep on startup and are unable to press F2 (I believe it is F2) to enter BIOS, then it sounds like you may have a stuck key on the keyboard, or the cable for the trackpad or keyboard is not fully connected to the systemboard, OR the internal cables are pinched.   If this is the case, then I think you probably need to contact Lenovo service for help as it is likely a hardware issue.

If you are able to go into BIOS, are you able to move around in there?  You could try reloading BIOS defaults and reboot.  If everything works in BIOS and the problem is only in Windows, then it could be a driver / setting (less likely), but you could try to open mouse in the control panel and check settings.

But just based on the symptoms, it really sounds like either the touchpad or keyboard has a stuck key or is acting as if one is stuck due to the bad cable connection or a short.

Mark

Hey guys (and gals) My issue is pretty straightforward but seems like it just wont go away.

About two days ago I was at a friend of mines and I restarted my computer and all of a sudden the keyboard and touch pad were not working.

The keyboard works in the bios and at the POST. Once any windows components load it stops working, the weird part is that after about 30 minutes to an hour, it works. I'm sure most of you will agree this is not practical at all. I travel a bit so a USB keyboard is out of the question.

It does not work in safemode
I've tried System Restore, System Refresh and Restore to factory defaults.
None have worked.
I've scanned for Malware, rootkits etc... nothing.
Updating drivers for the keyboard and uninstalling and reinstalling did nothing.

The touch pad seems to not work at all. No matter how much time has passed.
The computer is a Dell Inspiron 15 3520 w. Windows 8 64-bit

Let me know if you guys need any more info.

How "exactly" did you restore it factory defaults? The reason I ask is because of how Windows 8 "recovers" itself doesn't necessarily affect any system files that maybe lost (causing loss of keyboard and touchpad function).

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that's about 2 years old. Today my keyboard and touchpad randomly stopped working all together. I managed to restart my computer, but since then, and after restarting it multiple times, both seem to be delayed. Answer:Laptop keyboard and touchpad not working

Connect a USB mouse and then uninstall the keyboard and tablet driver in Device Manger. Reboot. Does that solve the problem?

You might want to try a system restore to a date before the problem. Just make sure that anything on the desktop that was added since the system restore used is backed up.

This may also be a malware issue.

Hi Everyone:

I have a Toshiba A85 S-107 Satellite laptop. The keyboard and touch pads are acting weirdly, a little too weird to describe here. Basically the keyboard won't work at all and when I try to use it in Word, for example, it doesn't type but random windows open up when I hit keys. The touchpad works OK in that the mouse goes where I want it to but the buttons also do weird things when pressed. Since the problem began the keyboard worked fine once after a restart and it ALWAYS works perfectly in Command Mode. I tried to get it to work in Safe Mode but no good.

I've cleaned a lot of crap out of my drive and did all the usual virus scans and it doesn't help. Someone suggested I reinstall the keyboard driver but I have no idea where to find it and Google searches for it turn up nothing. Any ideas appreciated.

If anyone can help
I have a toshiba Satellite M50-A-11p laptop (windows 8.1) that I brought from John Lewis
I tend to not shut down my laptop and leave it on sleep mode.
All of a sudden once the laptop wakes up when I open it non of the keyboard functions or touchpad works. I press and hold the start button to switch off and switch back on but again I cannot type or move the cursor.
I used a usb mouse which the laptop recongised and used the online keyboard to login in. After that the laptop froze and gave me the light blue screen of death message. Again I switch the laptop off and back on and repeated the login process of using the usb mouse and online keyboard.
I decided to refresh the laptop (with not affecting the files) and the keyboard and touchpad worked till it automatically when into sleep mode after and I had the same problem the touchpad on the keyboard and the keyboard are not working again.
I decided to refresh the laptop completely affecting what is on the laptop and again everything is working till it was asking for updates then once the updates were complete nothing on the keyboard were working again
I don't know whats wrong with it

Hi,
I bought my Acer laptop (aspire 5610z) used a couple months back. It's always been a good laptop, except that the mouse pad keys were "loose" and wobbly. A couple days ago, I decded to fix both keys. I took the screen, top cover/palm rest, and keyboard out. Nothing too major. I succeeded in fixing the keys, and they both work like new. (a plastic piece broke off each of them so I superglued them back together.) I put everything back together, powered it on, and realized that the touchpad didn't work. Like anyone would do, I took it back apart, and realized that the ribbon cable running from the touchpad to the motherboard was out of its housing, so I plugged it back in. It still wouldnt work, so I stopped for the night. The next day, I was tinkering with it, and somehow the keyboard stopped working too. I get mad at this point. Its not like I broke anything all the times I opened the laptop up. Frustrated, I stopped for the day. Sunday night, I try to fix it again, and to my suprise and luck, the keyboard and touchpad worked again. I was happy, and started using the laptop. I didn't use for more than 20min, when guess what, the keyboard, touchpad, and the volume/play buttons on the side all stopped working, again. (I unplugged that volume/play ribbon cable, also.)The keyboard will work in screens like where it says "windows error recovery, start in safe mode, command prompt, normal." It just won't work in regular windows.

Zif cables

You need to be really careful when taking apart a notebook..the ZIF cables (Zero Insertion Force) sometimes called Flex Cables are extermely fragile...the connector on the motherboard has little slides that you pull out, then remove the ZIF connector, the cable will go in/out with "Zero Force" To install make sure the slide is OUT, then put the ZIF cable in and you push the slide back in...cable connected. If you just pull these cables out and try to force them back in you will shred the ends and the keyboard/touchpad/etc won't work.

if only SOME of the keyboard does not work, like a small area, maybe the 1, 2, q, w, a, keys..that means the ZIF cable is not inserted all the way...reseat the cable and it should work fine..

Many of these cables can be bought for $5 or so on eBay if you need to replace them...I have bought several of them from a guy..I can get his information if you need it.

Last night while just browsing around sites my keyboard and touchpad simply stopped working (mind you, these are sites I frequent and shouldn't be dangerous), And now I'm stuck using a Usb keyboard/Mouse.

I checked the device manager, and there's a yellow exclamation point next to the keyboard. So I did some basic troubleshooting like disabling/enabling the keyboard, updating, and reinstalling the keyboard drivers. So far, nothing has worked.

However, I have found that my function keys still work correctly. People have suggested using functions like Fn+7 and such, but those have done nothing so far.

And if it helps, I'm using a Toshiba laptop with a synaptics touchpad.

EDIT: I've also checked for viruses by first running a quick scan on Malwarebytes, then a full scan.

This is for an Aspire 5100.

The computer logs on fine, but the user is unable to log in since none of the keys respond. The computer won't soft reset, and the mouse won't work either. At best , sometimes Fn+F6 allows for the screen to be shut off.

Any help? There is alot of school work on this particular machine.

I was having responsiveness issues with the trackpad for a while, then, i open my laptop one day and it's completely unresponsive, as well has the backlit keyboard not working (the hotkey still pops up that it's "lighting up" the keyboard, but no actual lights) and the trackpoint being completely unresponsive too. I've tried:- Restarting computer- Using Lenovo's various "fixing" softwares- Looking for a keyboard firmware shortcut for enabling/disabling trackpad, (doesn't exist on this computer)- Re installing drivers (Ultranav driver refuses to install manually, "driver installation failed")- Booting on a non microsoft OS (Booted on a linux Mint installation and it still doesn't work)- Booting into BIOS and looking for "enable/disable trackpad option", That option does not exist for me.- Opening up computer and checking the physical connection, All plugged in fine. When i open the device manager in windows there is no entry for the mouse whatsoever. The touch screen and the pen both work fine. I think it all points towards a hardware issue, i can pick up another trackpad on ebay for pretty cheap, but obviously i'd like to make sure that it would actually solve the issues.  The major confusion for me is that why would faulty trackpad hardware stop the backlit keyboard from lighting up? How are the two linked? Any ideas appreciated, Thanks!

My laptop (ACER Aspire 1640) is struggling. The symptoms are:

1) It started with the keyboard behaving oddly. First, random keys didn't work (mostly the s key).

2) Then, whilst booting, beeping sounds would prevent the booting process. However, I was still able to boot by using f12. Both these symptoms indicated that a key was being pressed (assuming the s key since this was usually the one behaving strangely). Therefore, I removed some keys and cleaned underneath. This didn't seem to make much difference.

3) More and more keys would stop working after booting. However, once the laptop has "warmed up", 10 minutes or so after it has been turned on, all keys are again working.

4) The touchpad has stopped working.

5) The ACPI reports battery power incorrectly. It indicates that there is only 50 minutes of power left when 100% charged. However, I have verified that there is actually 80 minutes. When the battery indicator reached around 5%, I let the computer run until the battery was drained. This draining took more than half an hour where it should have been a matter of minutes considering that the indicator said that only 5% was left.

6) The PCMCIA slot has stopped working.

7) The mobile phone that I connect to the laptop via a USB port is having trouble getting reasonable Internet speeds. I have tested the phone on another laptop with the same configuration and the same cable, and here speeds are as expected.

My assumption is that the laptop is not ... Read more

Answer:Laptop - keyboard, touchpad, pcmcia and usb malfunction

No solid ideas to offer you. I suggest that you experiment a bit.

Run on battery only (since it is capable of being fully charged).
Use external keyboard and mouse. Some laptops accept a ps2 y-connector so both can be used at the same time. Mine does not, as an example.
I have not tried USB connectivity for either the KB or the mouse. While battery is considered a stable power source, remove the battery and run off the adapter. This will check out the filter & regulator.

Yours symptoms are many. However, replaceable parts on a laptop are hard to do without professional help. Opening the case & looking for loose or pinched cables may not be worth the risk/hassle.

I have major issues with my Lenovo laptop.  I have had touchpad issues since day one (Nov 2012) and now have major issues with my keyboard. From the beggining, my touchpad would either be overly sensitive or non-responsive at all.  (I hate how the cursor defaults to a particular part of say a Word text if you leave your typing inactive more a number of minutes.)  The touchpad is also overly sensitive!  When my left hand simply hovers over the letter keys while my right hand is positioned over the touchpad, it somehow creates some shortcut command and changes up the screen, particularly the zoom function when I glide the mouse horizontally. HOW DO I MAKE THIS STOP?

I also have issues with starting Windows.  A black screen turns up and when I run the Task Manager, Lenovo TouchZone comes up and I have to end the program.  How do I fix this permanently?

Then just last night, the touchpad had again been irresponsive, as it does all the time sometimes, and so I turn it off an on (maybe that makes it worst), and then I started having issues with my keyboard!  It doesn't type all letters just some. Sorry I can't explain.too well..but I'm semi frantic with a few writing deadlines coming up! Consider i'm on a lil island with little access to serious tech help. When i try to use Word some floating keys appear over the tool bar...its all just so weird! Please help!

Answer:Issues with p580 laptop - touchpad and keyboard

Anna,I dont know what might be causing it but your latest issue, the floating, letters is what would show if you had pressed the "alt" key, as these are the keyboard shortcut identifiers. Assuming you havent pushed the alt key yourself this indicates that windows has been incorrectly told it has been pushed by the bit of oftware that detects the keyboard key presses. I am not a lenovo or windows expert, but I imagine that this indicates fairly serious problems with, at the very least the device drivers that control the input devices (i.e keyboard touch-screen etc) I would recommend returning it to the place of purchase immediatly (dont wait at all if you can). Other than this I could maybe suggest that a small part of the issue *may* be caused by having the sticky keys feature turned on. If this is the case sticky keys can be truned off by pressing both the left and right shift keys at the same time. Good luck

My friend's Toshiba laptop's keyboard and touchpad completely froze recently. Function keys seem to be the only thing working and the touchpad IS enabled. Hard shut down and restart did nothing. So I was able to it home and hook in an external mouse which worked. Navigating with the on-screen keyboard and external mouse, I tried to reinstall touchpad and keyboard drivers but have had problems. So again, the function keys work on the keyboard but nothing else. One other thing I found not working is the computer restart. Computer will shut down and boot up alright. If restarted it shuts down to a black screen, sounds like the fan is still running, and never boots back up. Then I need to hard shut down and restart. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 (apparently already reconditioned) running Windows 7 64-bitTouchpad and Keyboard drivers installed are:HID Keyboard device (ver. 6.1) - working properlyStandard PS/2 keyboard - says device working properly (but has disappeared from device list on occassion)HID-complaint Mouse - says device working properlySynaptics PS/2 Port Touchpad (driver ver. 11.____) - states "This device cannot start (code 10)."Tried updating/reinstalling drivers. Toshiba website has updated drivers for the touchpad (ver 13) but no keyboard drivers. I haven't been able to locate basic keyboard drivers. Not sure what else to do.Any advice would help. Thanks!

Answer:Toshiba laptop keyboard & touchpad frozen

reconditioned...personally i would stop messing around and do a factory restore, after saving all the files, factory restore will delete the C; drive and reinstall the OS from the hidden partition, effectively taking the machine back to the day it was bought. then replace all your files and folders.if its still under warranty take it back.i hate computers!but cant help myself....

Hi, I have been using windows 10 for a couple of months. However, the keyboard and touchpad on my laptop just stopped working yesterday on login screen. I plugged in an external USB mouse to login and tried to reinstall the drivers, unfortunately, it didn't fix the problem. Then today I turned on my laptop to give it another try, but now even the external USB mouse is not working. I noticed the external mouse is still working in recovery mode, however, I can't recover the laptop. It asks me to type in the password but my keyboard is not working. Can anyone please help me? Thanks

Answer:Laptop keyboard and touchpad not working on windows 10. Please help

Hi Ronalzhe. Welcome to the TenForums @Ronalzhe.

First I'm going to recommend unplug your laptop, remove the battery, hold the power button down 25 secs, unplug all USB devices. Let it sit five minutes. Reassemble, do not plug in any USB devices. Boot.

If that doesn't work then you could try Advance Startup options. To get this power up computer, when you start to see the circle of dots press and hold power button down until laptop powers off. Power up and when the circle of dots appear again hold the power button until it powers down. On the third pass it let it boot.

Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

Hopefully at this point your mouse will work and you can click trouble shooting, then Advance options. At this point I would try a System Restore. If mouse isn't working there are the arrow keys but that doesn't help much if keyboard is dead.

You sound familiar with device, you could go to Safe mode but if keyboard isn't working there will be an issue. If on any screen you see the Ease of access icon you could click on that to get onscreen keyboard but that assumes external mouse is being responsive.

Please post back.

Hello. Last week a got a brand new ThinkPad E460 factory sealed for work. And it've had troubles with it out of the box, I have a ThinkPad T450s private and have never experienced anything like this on my private laptop. So of the bath to tends to freeze at Lenovo logo in BIOS boot screen. And I have to press a bunch of keys for it to continue. I think I might have fixed this issue by disableing secure boot and anti-theaft. It didn't always happen, but it happend every morning at work. I disabled these features now so I can't confirm or deny if that problem is competely ficked. I have of coruse updated the BIOS and all drivers. My second issue is that EVERY time, not only when I restart but also if I sign out of my account and back in again is that my TouchPad refuse to work if I don't click a key (any key) on the lenovo keyboard in addition to this left arrow key is in a loop. This is really annoying as I use this with a dock at my workplace. If I move the coursor to a textfield with my external mouse or the Trackpoint (that works fine regardless if I click on the keyboard or not) I will see the corusing being moved to the left contantly untill I click a key at the keyboard. What is going on? These issues seems really strange to me and not something you'd epxect.

Answer:ThinkPad E460 - TouchPad Will not work untill lenovo keyboard is pressed and arrow left is in a loop

I have not had the POST freeze problem, although I did have a bug with Yubikey, I had to push the Yubikey button twice to input the second part of my long VeraCrypt password, this was solved with a BIOS update.. Also my right speaker sounds broken on higher volumes, and OSD brightness bar is stuck on screen after waking up from S3 suspend, but goes away if I adjust the brightness with the keys on the keyboard. I do also have the TouchPad lockup problem! I have noticed the same, random lockups of the TouchPad. The TrackPoint works but the TouchPad locks up. It is restored by pushing a keyboard key or the TrackPoint mouse keys, or just leaving the TouchPad alone for a while (5-10 seconds). I got this machine with Windows 10 pre-installed but decided to go back to Windows 7 since Windows 10 has been nothing but a big PITA. I didn't notice this problem on Windows 10, but I have plenty of other Windows 10 specific problems. After installing all the latest drivers available for E460 (latest available from the site at the time, September 2016) this problem popped up. Current driver: 8.216.1616.135 I just checked System Update and noticed an update for the ALPS ThinkPad UltraNav Driver, so I'll update and check back (if I remember). New driver: 8.216.1616.151[Problem fixes]- Fixed an issue related to TouchPad Cursor no response in a short time after resume from S3 by lid close Maybe this have or will fix your TouchPad problem too.

Hey,

I am pretty desperate now as I recently got a new Lenovo z500 ideapad laptop, which i think its 9 months old only.

All of the sudden, one day the shift key started to automatically been pressed down.. as if its like its being 'possessed' in simple terms.. and it happened at random times

After much forums, some say hold shift key down for 10 secs or x amount of secs, disable sticky keys, filter keys, bounce keys, or even continue press shift keys continuously etc etc..

Did all those, disabled sticky keys, bounch keys, filter keys and now whenever i on my comp, the shift key will automatically be pressed down, so i have to hold the shift key for like 5-8secs to disable it, than it works fine and no more occurence.

However, a new problem occurs.. now certain keys on the laptop is not working like the right shift key.. when the right shift key is pressed down, none of the letters are being capital or none of the symbols are showing BUT the left shift key does the job..

Than, the left shift key could not caps the letter z, t, y, m, and a few more.. but it works prefectly fine with other keys.. Now i am pretty sure its not a keyboard malfunction because without pressing caps, all the keys are fine but only these certain keys wont be caps when the left shift key is pressed..

So i decided to use an external keyboard and everything works out fine.. right shift key is working, left shift key caps those letters which could not be cap... Read more

Answer:laptop keyboard does not work but works fine with usb keyboard

The fact that a USB keyboard works fine when your built in one doesn't, proves that it is the keyboard itself (or connectors) that is damaged/defective, otherwise, if it were a software problem, the external keyboard would do the same.

So I have a Y570, replaced the thermal paste. After replacing it , the screw for the keyboard dosen't thighten up and is stuck spinning. Tried almost forever to spin that screw but it won't tighten up. I tried removing it but it won't come out too... Gave up then booted on my laptop. After booting it on, I noticed that my keyboard won't work. I checked the device manager if it can detect my keyboard and it says it does. Anyone have any idea how to fix this? Right before I replaced the thermal paste it was working just fine. Tried taking out that screw also but it won't just come off. Hardware problem or software?

Yesterday, after restarting my PC to finish updates from Windows, and installations from Autodesk and MATLab, my keyboard, touch pad and wireless mouse stopped working. After checking the drivers, I found that the keyboard and mouse drivers had a code 32. So I did a system restore before all the updates. Did nothing for the drivers.I tried uninstalling, updating the drivers; didn't work. Then I used CCleaner to clean up registry errors. No changes.Next, I went into the registry and deleted the UpperFilter values for the keyboard and mouse drivers. Code 32 was gone for HID keyboard driver and the HID mouse driver. But now the ps/2 keyboard driver and the synaptics smbus driver now had a code 10.After removing and reconnecting my wireless mouse's usb, I noticed that fixed drivers come and go with it, so I tried to find the drivers for the mouse to try a manual reinstall for my mouse. Couldn't find them, (Logitech's website was of no help). So I got Driver Booster to help me. The program said my PC had a lot of outdated drivers, so I decided to let the program update them all in hopes it would fix both the code 10 and let my mouse work again. And that's how the touchscreen stopped responding. Driver Booster had paused while downloading the driver for the Bluetooth as Windows Defenders stopped it. When I tried to allow the download, I notice my only method of interacting with my PC had failed.I force shut down the PC in hopes that the problem would be fixed. Didn't work.So now, I can... I don't know for sure the the Win7 update killed the track-pad, but about a week or so ago after I let it run I've lost the track-pad function completely and the keyboard is erratic. If I accidentally hit the Caps Lock key the keyboard stops responding. I discovered if I open the keyboard control panel and just change a parameter, like how fast the cursor blinks and APPLY then I get the keyboard back without rebooting. I downloaded the track-pad driver, says it's the same as installed but the system no longer recognizes it's there in the control panel. This is an HP G60 series laptop running Win 7 Home.

I'm downloading TSG to add that info, but searching I see many people have had similar problems like this with no solution on various brands of laptops and Windows. Anyone suggest a reason for this? And how to fix it without reinstalling Windows from scratch?
