Opinions on Surface Pro 3 or Laptop

Question: Opinions on Surface Pro 3 or Laptop

Hey guys and gals, my names Alex, I'm in the market right now for what to get for myself as far as a mobile 'pc' goes.

I've been doing a lot of research on Microsoft's Surface Pro 3, and honestly I'm really happy with the results. What I'm looking for is pretty much what the SP3 has, mobility, but power. Now, that's just my general needs, honestly I could probably do without the SP3, but I'm starting to get into 3D modelling, and along with 3D modelling, a little bit of art. I don't and probably won't do it professionally, but more-so as something to do on the side for fun, and maybe to help developer buddies of mine looking for models or art of some kind, but still mostly for fun. (By the way, the version of the SP3 I'm looking at right now, is the i5 variant, with the 8gb of ram, and 256gb SSD. Read and believe it's the best price wise for the uses I'll be using it for, ie. 3d modelling, drawing, light games, etc. Explained more below.)
And I've read up on the Yoga 2 a little as well, and I've found that it costs about the same as the Pro 3 for just about the same components.

The pen for the SP3 looks really good and from what I've heard, works really well with the tablet. But besides just being a good tablet, I'm wanting something that can work as a bit of a laptop. (I'm a big gamer. BUT. When I'm on the road, I'm not the kinda guy to be interested in playing HEAVY games, really.) When I'm on the sail boat or on the road or something, I'd much rather have lighter (less battery required) games, like Dwarf Fortress, or small rogue likes, anything that's fun, requires thought and can drag me away from the drive (unless I'm driving). So I think the SP3 would be perfect for Dwarf Fort and other small games I play, simply because usually they require more processor and near to no graphics (with the occasional exception).

So, I guess really, a tablet would be my best option, at least personally. I really don't want to lose that ability to use a pen in favor of being able to more easily modify and repair a device such as a laptop.

I guess the next question is, is the Surface Pro 3 my best option for tablets? So far it's the most highest rated one I've seen, as good for regular consumers go instead of just professionals.

So, I guess my question is, does anyone have their own opinions on the SP3 or other tablets possibly cheaper that are just about as good? Please, try to avoid being biased, or putting a product down due to a defect or something, I want good, sturdy advice with someone that's had a lot of experience with the SP3 while doing the same things I do, or at least similar.

PS: Money isn't that much of a problem for me, really, but being cheap whilst also strong performance wise is a really good thing for me. (Used to work on a really really slow PC and really don't want to go back in time. )
Also, I am pretty good with computers, I've spent a good portion of my life working on them myself and even have built the PC I'm using right now myself, not that that matters too much, but it's more to say that if there are things I have to do to improve performance of the SP3 or something, etc to help, that kind of thing.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Opinions on Surface Pro 3 or Laptop

I should mention, the main use for this PC is NOT gaming, if you haven't already figured that out. It's meant more for browsing on the side of my main PC, for browsing and other things when I'm on the road, modelling when I'm away from my main PC, etc. NOT gaming.

From the professional that seeks inspiration out in the world and wants to capture it, to the student traveling from class to dorm room to library, we all desire tools that allow us to bring ideas to life wherever we choose. This is why we build Surface products, and this is why we?ve expanded the Surface family with beautiful and powerful devices that reflect the individual using them.

Between the versatile Surface Pro, and the gorgeous Surface Laptop (both at 8gb RAM and 256gb SSD), which device would you recommend for a teacher?
I have had my sights set on getting a new surface device for the past several years (I am stuck with the original Pro and a Toshiba laptop), and now seems like it might be a great time to buy. In regards to my usage, I am looking for a device that I could use for both personal consumption (YouTube, Netflix, music, taking notes, reading, casual gaming, etc.) and for using within the classroom (creating lesson plans, grading assignments, possibly using the device during instruction).
Both devices look wonderful, but I have concerns about the Surface Pro's battery life, screen size, and the Pro's true potential as a laptop replacement. In regards to the Surface Laptop, I am a little uneasy about the lack of MicroSD, as well as its handicapped inking potential.
In essence, for a teacher, both in the classroom and on the couch, which device would you recommend for overall reliability, versatility, and battery life? Thanks!

Answer:For a Teacher: Surface Pro or Surface Laptop?

I think surface pro, because surface laptop cannot be fixed if there was problem with him. (alcantara) In surface pro you just buy new keyboard + it is smaller and it have windows 10 pro

My requirements are for general web browsing and MS office use - nothing extravagant.

Answer:Laptop opinions

Moved it to Hardware as many of our members dont goto the lounge but do read the tech forums,

While I'm just on my way out but I will just leave these thoughts for now,

I find HP, Compaq, ASUS, Advent (maybe UK or EU only dont know if Advent are in the US ) and Sony all good makes and fairly reliable, I have a Compaq one and its fine, no issues with it at all.

A few things I would NEED to have on a laptop are;

at least 1.6ghz or above CPU ( I have a 2.2ghz AMD Mobile Athlon 64 at present )

1gb or Ram
80-100GB HD
a GFX card with its own dedicated memory 128mb or above ( do not go for a laptop with shared memory if your wanting to play 3d games )

I would tho aim to a CPU which is 64bit capable for future usage with upcomming Operating Systems and Software which will be 64bit capable, AMD Athlon64 or AMD Turion64s are very good, so are Intels Centrino ( I would only go with if going Intel with the Centrino's and not the Celeron Ms )

Answer:Opinions on this laptop please?

If you just want to do simple tasks then it will be fine. Try and do more than one task and they grind to a halt.IMHO Personally I woundn't touch one with a celeron cpu, I've used a few.I think this is a much better machine from comet click here. If you buy on line it's down to £479. The 1.7Ghz centino is very good for proccesing power, WiFi and battery life.

Question: Laptop opinions

I am in the market for a laptop and ordered this one from Staples last week:

The price was $399 because they gave me a $100 coupon - even got a conformation email.
When I didn't receive it, I called and they said DISCONTINUED, but Walmart has it, as does Tigerdirect[. (but I would have to pay $499,00.

Staples wouldn't even let me use the coupon tp purchase something else.

They are useless!!!

Anyway, I am also looking at this one:

I have a self-built for any heavy lifting.

The laptop would only be for light Web surfing, watching movies, listening to music.

I'm inclined to go for the Lenovo and add an SSD
Through Amazon - no shipping or tax, so that would almost pay for the SSD.

I am getting conflicting opinions on AMD in a laptop - overheating issues?

Any opinions appreciated.

I know it's not a P4 processor .... but think the Celeron 2.0GHz will suit my needs just fine, and do just as well as the P4 1.6GHz I have in one of my desktops .... what do you think???

And what do you think about the price???

All my tech buddies seem to agree that Toshiba is the way to go .... well unless you can afford a IBM

But they are really gonna have a bit*hfest that I did not go the extra for the new P4 .... but I buy for my needs .... not because "it's there"

Opinions Please???

Answer:opinions on this laptop please ...

Well Toshiba is definitely the way to go, I believe they are the # 1 laptop manufacturer.

What are you're needs.

Here's what I don't like about it, although there's nothing bad about it:
- 2.0 Celeron - I'm just not a fan of these, the full Pentium is quite a bit better.
- Intel Graphics - I'm sure this uses 32MB of your system RAM leaving you with only 224 for the system and Intel Graphics aren't that great.

Still its a great laptop with a very nice price and is more than a sufficient workhorse for almost all apps.

I'm personally not a fan of AMD in notebooks. While problematic, I have seen a lot more overheating and motherboard failure issues on 2-3 year old AMD notebooks versus Intel based ones. If it were me, I'd go with Intel.

Although store stock may vary, I saw a 15.6" Dell i3 with 6GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD in the Sugar Land, TX Walmart over the weekend on "Rollback" for $299. rolleyes - and yes, they had boxed units in stock.

While I'm here saving for my new 7600gt gfx cards my gf bought a new laptop from Dell. I asked her to throw in a Mobile gfx card for me( for those rainy days) and were anxiously awaiting its arrival. Im asking for your opinions on what type of games I can expect to play and your opinion of its performance with online games( such as FEAR). The whole package was only $840.00US. I figured the gfx card is crap because of the cheap price( 25.00 extra).

Here are the specs...

You could do better. Semprons are slow as heck, 4-cell battery is near worthless (1-1.5 hrs tops) plus it's a refurb. You could still get something a lot nicer for under $500. Even if it costs a bit more make sure you do dual core. A single core processor really doesn't cut it with Vista.

Answer:Need opinions on laptop

if you don't really need a laptop then I can't suggest you purchase one. You'l ultimately be disappointed with it's performance/cost ratio and the lack of any pgraability other than HDD and memory. That said.
probably the best price/ performance you'll find. Played with one, seme well built. I don't have anything against emachines. Other than those stupid mini atx power supplies they use in desktops that die after 12 months.

3gigs o' ram (shared)
320gigs o' hard drive space (about 270gigs when I got it..)
nVidia GeForce 8200MG 312mb
HDMI ports and bluetooth!
what rez is the HD? 720p or 1080p?

I got this at newegg for $500 flat. now its for sale for $520 ha ha!

I can play FC2 at low spec with 20-35 fps and prototype at LOWEST spec at like 15-20fps, and Crysis Wars lowest spec at a good 20-30 fps at mesa.

Like I said, All I wanted to know is your opinions, because this is my FIRST laptop I have EVER bought, and am accustom to high performance full tower computers that I build, thus the reason I have installed all my games on it (Crysis, Crysis warhead, Crysis Wars, GuildWars, Prototype, Street Fighter IV, FC2, etc..).

All right, I've been thinking about buying a new laptop for a little while now, and I think it's about time.

I haven't had the best of luck with laptops.

Basically, they've had everything thrown at them, from having the Network Cable struck by lightning, blowing the Network cards out of it, to being dropped from a counter onto a hard floor 5 feet below, to being stolen and tossed out a window (Gladly it was onto grass, and only like 4 feet up). I also tend to always use it, like I'll either use it several hours a day, or leave it on 24/7, and carry it around where ever I go.

I don't try to destroy them, but it happens.

Now, I've been suggested that I buy a Panasonic Toughbook, but I've already chosen against that. Too much for too little specs, and besides, I need to start dealing with my ability to destroy things, and do my best NOT to destroy them.

Anyway, I've been searching around, and have only been able to find a few Laptops that fit my specifications.

Those are Basically:

1.) Core 2 (Centrino, 2GHz+, Preferably the newer Montevina core)
2.) 14-15.4 inch Wide Screen. Preferably 14.1, as I really don't want anything larger.
3.) Pretty much ANYTHING BUT an Intel Video card (This narrows the field down to almost nothing)
4.) Something that won't fall apart the first time a piece of dust lands on it
5.) Something with Some type of design, so it looks fairly nice is prefered
6.) Good Construction (Again )

That's just a base-line. I don't need an... Read more

Answer:Opinions on an Asus Laptop...

I know of several people that have Acer laptops. A buddy even wrote up a review of his recent purchase of his Acer.

Asus F8Sg-4P001C - InfoByte Forums

I would read that as it is some good inside info on how the Asus performs and everything it has.

From my personal experience i have seen that Asus is coming on strong in the laptop area. They are becoming a laptop juggernaut quickly. If i am not mistaken they are like 3rd among laptop sellers now. Behind Dell and Apple. Not to bad.

As for others model and brands. Dell does have some good laptops. I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 and love it. HP and Compaq have some decent ones for their price.

Just some food for thought.

Which brand and specs should I go with? Is there any deals? Best place to buy from that doesn't have non-English speaking support?

I think I like the laptop better so I'll start there. I have some older discs that my kids still use, I know I can get a external drive though for a tablet.

Basically we use laptop now for QuickBooks Pro 2011, TurboTax, excel, word, picture editing, and gaming by my sons.

I'm looking for lightweight as I hate lugging my laptop around. My kids are not liking my thinking of a surface pro as they said it's awful for gaming.

I do financials and taxes for free for not for profits, scouting, disabled, and senior citizens. Hence the need for something easier to carry around.

Currently I have a very heavy HP DV7T-4100 with intel i7 processor, windows 7 64 bit. Has been an awful laptop for sure. HP support has been nothing but horrendous. I own it and so does 2 mainframe tech friends and we've all had to replace the hard drive and the power cord and battery at different times, it runs obscenely hot and always cooling, while HP claims nothing was wrong, what's the chances that 3/3 all had same issues using same for different purposes? Prior I had Dell but their out of country support was useless with telling me to format the hard drive for every thing..... thank God for majorgeeks.

Any suggestions and also where I can get a deal or what I should be paying for item?

Thanks for always being there!!!!!

Answer:Laptop Or Tablet? Opinions?

Tech support from the majors has always been hit and miss, depends on who you get one the phone, but thats random in getting that tech geek that works for them over someone reading a script.

If it was just your usage on what you mentioned then a Surface Pro 3 or 4 would be superb, plus you can plug them into larger screens and connect Wireless mice and KBs, when not on the move, I have a Surface Pro and they are super quick. NOW the part issue is you need to sell your kids! nah just joking but the gaming aspect I part agree with as they will not play high end games too well like Star Wars Battlefront, but they play some games ok. What games do they play on the current Laptop?

What kind of price would you want to pay, would you want same level of CPU as in an Intel i7 again? (good CPU so I'd stick with one)
What kind of screensize would you want as larger typically adds to weight and being less portable?

I have always had good luck with ACER, LENOVO in the past, had more ACER's though, but would need a few of the questions answered before looking for a possible solution for you, as the gaming aspect is the tricky part as in reality not many Laptops are good for gaming unless they come with dedicated (discrete) graphics GPU and not onboard GPU. ASUS laptops are getting a great name and as a OEM maker their hardware is generally good, I always use their motherboard in my desktops,

Few that stand out to me are
Asus ROG GL552JX
Lenovo Y50 Ultra HD (only issue is... Read more

Hi everyone,
I build my own systems but need opinions for a laptop for my sister who lives in another state. She's ready to upgrade and plans on buying a new laptop.
Her current PC is 11 years old. What I want her to get is something top of the line because she won't be upgrading again for another 10/11 years.
She's not a gamer, just needs MS Office and email. But i want her to have lots of speed cause she only has DSL and not cable like i have.
And also because she won't be upgrading again anytime soon.
Any and all recommendations would be appreciated.

Answer:Opinions for a new laptop for my sister.

how much do you want to spend ?

MS Office does not come with any PCs as standard , unless theres some really special deal - so you will also have to buy the MS package - there are free alternatives - for example

I have a total budget of $600.00 to spend on a new laptop. I can't go over. I must have Windows 7 or 8 OS, and would like Microsoft Word (but all of Office is not necessary). Please keep in mind that durability is the key here! I still have a PC from 1999 that operates effectively although it is extremely slow compared to today's models. I have only fixed that computer for viruses so have not needed parts even. So, with the first paragraph in mind, which laptop is built to last the longest?

Answer:Seeking Opinions on Best Laptop

Well, what was the none you had?I will guess nit was an IBM think pad.Now Lenovo, still a great choice.   About $500. You said reliability, that is what you get. No frills. Any effort to improve performance either ups the price or dips the quality.

I narrowed it down to two laptops: the Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus, and the Dell XPS 15. I am going to be in college next year and need a high-performing laptop for all my college life needs. That'll be gaming like Diablo, LoL, and any other game I can get my hands on. I also need a laptop with a good keyboard for all those papers and whatnot. I am willing to take advantage of the $100 off deal for my laptop, and any other discounts you guys are aware of, I'd love to hear about them. The XPS 15 is probably as far as I can go budget-wise. I just wanna know which one you prefer, given any experiences you've had with either. Any answer would be appreciated, because I'm trying to decide and it's a toss-up right now.

Answer:Looking for a high-end QHD+ laptop. Opinions?

The Samsung ATIV Book 9 Plus only has a 128 GB SSD. The processor in the Samsung also clocks lower than that in the Dell, which means that the Samsung will have better battery life, but it won't be as good for gaming.

I'm looking for a decent laptop for school. My price range is around $1000 - $1500 CDN.

I am a gamer, and as such it is extremely hard for me to not try to get an ultra high end laptop. However, I have a good gaming PC that I upgrade regularly, so I should be fine. The laptop is mainly for taking to classes and such.

My first stop was to Dell's site. The Inspiron 1420 seems to be pretty good. I want a Core 2 Duo processor, at least 1.8GHz, at least 2GB of RAM for Vista, and at least a 120GB HDD.

However, when it comes to video processors, they only offer an Intel Media "Accelerator" (Vroom vroom), a Geforce 8400, or an 8600. The Intel thing is completely out of the question, as it can't do shit. Honestly, it scores about 150 in 3D Mark 06. I know this laptop isn't for gaming, but I'd at least like to play Half-Life 2 or maybe even Oblivion on low settings. ¬_¬'

The GeForce cards are apparently crap compared to the last generation of cards. Personally, I'd prefer to be able to choose a 7800 or something similar, because at least it'd be able to play games. What is the point of having a DirectX 10 capable card if it can't even play DirectX 10 games at any sort of appreciable framerate?

After looking at the Dell site, I took a trip down to Best Buy. They had a good assortment of crap on display for rediculously bloated prices. For some reason, all of the Toshiba laptops have a Bilingual keyboard, since I... Read more

Answer:Decent laptop, need opinions...

I have a Dell 6400 laptop with an ATI Radeon 1400 Mobile card and it can play Quake 4 just fine at Medium/High settings and I only have a Core Duo at 1.73 gHz (but you can configure it for whatever you want). If you go to the small business site for most of these companies you can get a lot more bang for the buck.

P.S.: I've heard that macbooks don't allow full graphics acceleration when running Windows; this may not be true anymore but, it would be a serious problem for you if you wanted gaming.

I got my tax refunds back. I am now ready to buy a brand new computer, another laptop. I am unsure about Windows 8 (is it a hard transition from Vista to that version and have they got all the bugs out from 8?). There are some things that I know I want like the following:

- 64 bit version
- at least 6 gigs of RAM with more slots available if I need it
- Since I have an external HD, I want at least 100 GB HD on my new laptop
- willing to spend $900 to $1,000 for a laptop
- most likely won't get the software I want on it like the Office Suite, but oh well
- prefer an HP, but ok with a Dell
- at least 3 USB ports that are 3.0 in power and an additional one that could be 2.0
- built in webcam
- powerful processor
- straight keyboard (not interested in the ergo type slanted KB)
- Extras are my own doing, like wireless mouse and KB
- DVD player, DVD writer, DVD burner
I do not do a lot of graphics or video editing, but I used to have an apple and enjoyed iMovie and using my webcam, but can't find a laptop that has firewire which it requires. I guess I can use my little Cannon camera and record for 30 seconds, but I used to make some terrific videos and sent them as gifts to people.

I was speaking to an HP sale rep today via live chat and at one point she said this, ""It comes with SuperMulti 8X DVD+/-R/RW with Double Layer Support. However, since this is customizable, you can choose to have either Blu-ray player & SuperMulti DVD burner or Blu-ray ... Read more

I assumed that since I "know" Windows I could figure out how to use Windows 8 just by barging in--just like going from XP to Vista or Windows 7. Not! Read a tutorial or two and the transition is annoying, but not all that bad. If you end up with Windows 8 read this sticky thread in the Windows 8 forum.

I just wanna buy a good gaming laptop for a somewhat reasonable price. I can go a little more than the prices listed, so if a possible change of one component would put one laptop ahead of the other, that's cool. Basically, I just need help figuring out which laptop gives the best hardware for it's price. I'm no good with good hardware comparisons, so that's why I'm here. I'm looking at a Refurbished ASUS T100TA Transformer Intel Quad Core Atom 2GB Memory 32GB SSD 10.1" 2-In-1 Touch Notebook Windows 8.1 for $249.97 on TigerDirect. Best Buy has it online for $379.99. My budget is practically non-existent but my work requires Adobe Creative Suite. My current ASUS laptop screen has gone kaput.

Do I take my chances on refurbished to save money or should I spend more for new? PC Mag rated ASUS T100TA among the top 10 laptops for 2014. I'm weary about another ASUS considering my screen issue (hardware related) but maybe it's just a fluke? I'd love to spend more but I'm not working.

Well I got promised a job and I'm going to start working in about 2-3 weeks and save my money to buy a new laptop and I'd like some opinions on what I should be looking for in a laptop, for I don't know much about specs so maybe some of you can help:

I am hoping for a decently sized screen, maybe around 17 inches and I definitely want it to be Windows 7.
I am a high school student, going into 11th grade and I will be using this laptop for both school work as well as personal stuff. I will surely be buying a copy of Microsoft Office for this laptop once I get it (I can't get used to Works).
I want a processor that can have the capability of running most game emulators: GBA, DS, Dreamcast, N64 but I will not play any top-grade games like Crisis 2. I also want to be able to play Minecraft without crashing and needs to be snappy in menus. What type of processor should I be looking for?
Also, I've had a problem with viruses on this laptop and I'd like to buy a good protection for the new one. Would you recommend a specific name of Virus Protection that I would be able to find online or in a store like Office Depot?
I know I want about a 150GB harddrive, for storing photos, videos, music, and lots of documents.
Other programs I will be buying and running here (if that matters): Photoshop, iTunes, MS Office, Game Emulators, ooVoo, and MSN.

So, if you can give me any idea of a processor I should use for the above mentioned tasks? I want it to be able to run these without a probl... Read more

Answer:New Laptop - Opinions Needed

What is your absolute upper price limit for the laptop itself? I'm not including any other applications/programs that you are going to buy here, I just want a figure for the laptop itself.

In the meantime, have a look at this selection on Amazon. I have narrowed it down to W7 and a screen size of 16 - 17.9 inches. Electronics > Computers & Accessories > Laptops > Windows 7 > 16 to 17.9 Inches

As regards Virus Protection, many of us (myself included) use Avast!, which is easy to configure and use and, best of all, is totally free if you choose the Free Antivirus download here: avast! Free Antivirus - Download Software for Virus Protection

Asking for opinions -
Would buying a new battery for an old laptop computer be worthwhile?  Operating system is Vista s.p.2, and current battery will not charge beyond 66%, even after about 4 hours of charging time.  The machine otherwise works very well for being over 9 years old.

Answer:opinions - buy new battery for old laptop computer?

If you don't plan on upgrading to something like Windows 7 and you don't take the laptop where a battery is required then I would say forget and run the computer off the power adapter.
Vista is no longer supported and you do not receive critical security updates. Therefore I don not recommend you use the computer for any banking or online purchases unless you use something like a live linux DVD where Windows Vista is not used.

Hello, everybody! Let me begin by saying that I just joined these forums and this is going to be my first post, so I hope it is being posted in the correct category. Thank you for taking the time to check out my post!

Well, as the title says, I am in the market for a new laptop which I plan on buying in the next few days (on Wednesday, to be precise) but I don't know much about processors and other general specs, so I'd like to ask for opinions on the machine that has my eye at this moment.

Here is a link to the laptop:

In case you don't trust the link, or don't feel obligated to follow the provided link, I will post a few of the specs below:

17.3" HP Phenom X2
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
Premium AMD Phenom II Dual-Core Mobile Processor
LED Display; ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250 Graphics w/ 128MB Display
500GB Storage
Blu-Ray Compatible w/ Beats Audio

In asking for opinions, obviously you'll be curious of what I plan on doing on this machine, so I'll tell you about that below:

Web Surfing
Obviously I'll be using this laptop for the basic web surfing for this, including social sites, email, a bit of video watching (YouTube and Netflix), etc.

Typing Documents
I like to write so I plan on typing up quite a few documents over the course of having this laptop. I'll be typing small documents in Microsoft Works and Notepad, including poetry and short stories ... Read more

Answer:In The Market For A New Laptop - Opinions Needed

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I tried the link you posted, but it appears to be a dead 'un.

However, from the information you've posted, you'll have no problem doing what you suggest with the computer you have your eye on.

All I would say is, either buy direct from the manufacturer or a reputable reseller as I'd hate to see you getting caught out on Amazon or eBay. Also, pay particular attention to warranty periods and if you're offered the chance to buy a recovery disc with the machine, please do so.

Hey guys. Last night I was ripping some DVDs and importing them onto my Zune, the fan was working from about 5:00 until 11:30, and I left the room for awhile and came back in a few minutes later and the screen was black. I thought what the hell and rebooted. I reboot, and theres nothing. The screen is black, the backlight doesnt even come on. The hard drive doesnt tick or load, the only things that come on are the fan which runs very loudly even when the computer isnt even booting, and the DVD rom. I've tried putting in a few different recovery discs and Windows XP discs with no luck, it sounds like it reads them but it just does nothing.

I've hooked up an external monitor, which tells me there is no signal. I am lost here. It is a Gateway MX6440 notebook computer. Im fearing the worst, that I burned something on the motherboard and I will just have to throw out the computer. Any thoughts?

Answer:Please tell me my laptop isnt fried.. any opinions?

I would suggest taking this to a qualified repair tech in your area, call the manufacturer of the laptop and see where they recommend.

It is time to dump my old Android tablet and replace. I would like the device to be small (say 10 - 11" Screen), fast-ish, running Windows 10. I've seen some small laptops which seemed okay going for $179. It is mainly to replace the in home use of my Windows 10 phone as a handy, around the living room device, for under $250.
Another big one and not meant to be a point of contention or discussion but I do not wish to purchase products produced in China or Chinese owned companies elsewhere. I know this is kind of difficult to identify easily but that is a major consideration.
Thanks for any assistance

Hello there I just got a laptop that will hopefully survive me through college, as I'll be on a limited budget I don't really want it to break down or anything.
Just a few opinions would be very helpful.
As far as free anti-virus programs go is Microsoft Security Essentials the way to go?
I have bit-defender at the moment and still am on the free trial period as a friend said it was the best but don't really want to have to buy subscriptions for it unless there is a notable difference.

I have cleared the registry after I installed all the needed programs and have run CCleaner, I plan to run the defrager about once a week or so. Anything else I should be doing to maintain my computer?

I also heard alot of programs that start up on boot can really slow down a computer, what program (or steps if there are any) do you guys recommend to find a list of these and what should I be looking for to stop running on start up.

Thanks in advance guys !

Answer:Insightful opinions on maintaining my laptop

MSE is generally low resource and has the least number of known problems with windows 7.

I do not suggest using the registry cleaner in ccleaner. Though it's normal cleaning function is quite useful.
The computer will run with everything removed from startup, as will most of the applications that put items into startup (though they may need to be manually started instead of just popping up when needed)

As far as longevity a laptop cooling pad is a definite need.
The quickest killer of most laptops is heat, since there is so little room in them to dissipate and move heat, they suffer from heat problems far more commonly than desktops do.
The pads may seem like a pain in the backside to keep around, but they really are a good idea if longevity is a concern of yours.

Windows 8.1 64-bit
(No other software pre-installed!)
Intel Core i5-4200U
8 GB DDR3L memory
16 GB SSD for quick boot; 500 GB hard drive (more than enough!)
15.6" display; 1920 x 1080 resolution
NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 4GB DDR3 VRAM
3 USB ports (1-3.0; 2-2.0)
card reader
6.5 hr battery
Weight 4.85# (I want portability, so weight and battery life are important.)
Purchase price under $1000

I'd really appreciate any feedback/comments about Acer in general and this rig in particular! Thank you.

My only complaint would be the webcam. It's not even close to HD quality. However, everything else is a 10.

I'm about to take the plunge into a laptop and am trying to weigh my options.

Let me start off by explaining that I"m looking to spend $300 to $400 tops, before taxes and what-not.

My needs are simply to surf the net, email and watch dvds while away from the home unit.

What are the best choices regarding laptop brand and processor type?

I've read that Athlons normally generate more heat with a laptop, but generally outperform Celerons.

Answer:Buying a new budget laptop. Opinions on processor.

Avoid Celeron and Sempron processors. These are the '3 legged dogs' from Intel and AMD respectively. Centrino and Turion processors (again Intel/AMD respectively) were engineered for laptop use and either would be a good choice for performance and battery longevity. Laptops which use standard desktop processors are likely to run hotter and shorten the time between battery charges, but performance will be increased.

Unless you want to run pre-Windows 10 (which the system with the 7820HK CPU won't), go with that one.
While you CAN upgrade the SSD later, you CANNOT upgrade the CPU (they're hard soldered to the system board).

Hello guys?

I wanted to know your thoughts on laptops. I need to research a laptop, and one guy had told me that the really expensive ones are unnecessary, but the cheap ones not good. But that doesn't help me too much in selection.

What are the minimum requirements you would want in a laptop? The uses are home use... running this software:

And Windows XP or Vista... whatever comes with it, I guess. Oh... and it will be used to hold digital photos and run an edition software. It needs to have a disc drive.

I was just wondering what minimum requirements you would recommend.

Answer:Purchasing a laptop - opinions on minimum requirements

try pawn shops in your area. I work at one and we get them out all the time. They will usually be alot cheeper.

Question: Surface Laptop

With this latest leak of Surface Laptop, I am slightly disappointed since it doesn't even mention pen support or detachable screen. Sounds like Microsoft gave up on their strategy? If I were Microsoft, I'd rather wait for Redstone 3 and then release a surface non-pro device with Windows 10 on arm which would be a lot cheaper than a Surface Pro 4. I don't mind if they would put Windows 10 S on it, the point is that if this thing is running Atom processors it won't be very performant.
Now given that it's supposed to be an affordable laptop, I may still consider buying one if it is going to be available in Europe and if it will have pen support, otherwise it's not worth even those 300 or 400$ it is probably going to cost.
What do you guys think?

What do you guys think? The hint is in the name yo. Surface s. Same as their new cheapo ChromeOS competitor windows version, that we've been calling "Windows cloud", its actually going to be called "Windows s".
They are using this to push chromeOS out of the notebook market. That and windows on arm, are designed for budget space as much as anything else.
This is a stripped down cheap notebook for schools and budget oriented people. They didn't make it detachable or include a pen because kids will lose those, and schools wouldn't buy it.
Is it intel? Is it arm based? IDK.
Probs intel I'd guess. Performance and battery wise, we'll have to see. Maybe such a device would have been better ARM, but this is another case of MS... Read more

Just wondering if there is any significant and noticeable performance features/issues between what you would expect on a laptop and what you get of S3/SP3?
Is Surface actually something that could replace/match my current laptop? (Macbook)

One consistent remark in most of the reviews that I've read on either the Surface RT or the Surface Pro is that the reviewers seem to feel that it is not possible to use either of these devices in a lap. I've extensively used my Surface RT, with the touch cover, in my lap. I've types emails while stretched out on my couch, sitting in a chair and various other places. Am I the only one who finds the device can be successfully used in this way? I'm just curious because I feel like it's really being short changed in the reviews. Chime in and let me know what you all think.

Answer:Surface as a laptop

I use mine in my lap every day. It works well with or without using the touch cover. I have a lap board computer thing at home I use some times but I get tired of it after a while and just set my surface in my lap its more comfortable that way. I do have troubles typing on the touch cover at times with it in my lap so if I am typing a long email I just use the on screen keyboard.

Not really a help request, just your thoughts on what works best for you, or perhaps you may want to try some of this. Or you might have a better solution as this isn't perfect. Personally I find microscopic text and fonts a real pain on a notebook. I use a 17" notebook running Vista and IE8. Been trying to find the best compromise for setting the display. All really started with IE8, those small fonts ! Before this I used a lower resolution, (and accepted "soft" display. My current settings now are,1440 by 900 pixels... the native resolution of the display. Sharp but very small, aspect ratio on on "Windows" slightly wrong. Circles are oval... to tall. Why ???? when it's the "correct" setting. There is a lower resolution setting that gives nearly perfect aspect ratio but anything other then native gives "soft" text etc.Increased the DPI (dots per inch) to 144. Anything over 156 dpi gives a a problem with Vista gadgets in the sidebar. They have a purple outline. Gadgets are still "small", seem unaffected by dpi setting. IE8 Have the magnification set to 130%. This setting is "remembered". So to are different settings for different tabs... great for me as BT/Yahoo new mail is positively tiny with IE8. For "MS" Works documents and so on, I have set the "zoom" under "View" to 85%.This is the best "compromise" I have found up to now. You can set up desktop icons and text to suit. Am sure there must be many laptop users who find all this a problem.

Answer:Laptop users..display settings. Advice/opinions

Should have added using "Vista Basic" appearance theme not "Aero" as text is blurry in comparison.

Answer:Should I replace my laptop with a surface pro 3?

SP3 is a pretty awesome device, but it is quite expensive for a student. Don't get the i3 version because it comes with a low amount of storage space.

Honestly, I'm not sure if this device was designed as a tablet first or a laptop first. I'm a little hesistent of its I ternals for things other than productivity and web browsing. But I'm definitely I terrsted in it as a laptop.
So do you think it's going to be a good laptop or is this mostly designed as a iPad tablet competitor? Is it better to just get a pro 3 or other windows laptop?

Answer:Do you think surface 3 will be a good laptop?

If I had to use it as a laptop I will have no issues.
If I had to use it as a tablet I wouldn't have complaints either.
It's a lot of both.
It's not the most powerful (compared to full blown laptops in its price grade and above, but its got design, portability, quality on its side, so if those are preferable over a bulkier, potentially not-as-long-lived laptop, its an option.
You can do some 3D gaming like GTA, Starcraft II, light CAD work, lighter Photoshop work, etc.
the Surface Pro 3 is the better option if you want bigger, and more horsepower for fancier work.
May want a desktop to do the heavy lifting if you get this to compliment the device, but if I had to use it as my main PC, I think it'll be OK - but the memory options would be the issue.

I was on the Surface bandwagon from the day it was announced. And I pre-ordered mine and waited patiently for it to arrive. Finally got it in my hands and I really really liked it. I found it much moreuseful than my former Android tablet. But over the last several months, withstudying more for work (IT) and actually needing a full copy of Windows 8 withme at most times. And with my excellent Lumia 920, I started to think howredundant a tablet can me if you use your smartphone a lot. So, I decidedto list and sell my beloved Surface and ended up getting one of those $449.99(at Best Buy) ASUS Q200E touchscreenlaptops. I am actually "digging" the dual nature of using thetouchpad/mouse and then being able to swipe the screen and pretty happy withit. The display for sure is not as clear and sharp as the Surface but for me,it works and I think I'll be more productive. I do hope the Surface succeeds asit is an awesome design but Windows RT and a tablet in general just didn't seemto fit my needs.
Anyone else out there liking touchscreen laptops? I think that's where thefuture may be...

Answer:From A Surface To A Touchscreen Laptop

Everyone has different needs. And being in IT as well, I can see where the RT doesn't quite fill all needs for our field. The Surface Pro is much better suited. But then it's not out yet and costs a bit more than your ASUS.
I think touchscreen laptops are the way to go if you are going to use a laptop as your primary device. And let's face it, Windows 8 is best used and enjoyed on a touchscreen.
Congrats on your purchase and glad you are enjoying it.

Hi guys,

My dad's laptop has finished, and we are looking for a new one.

I've told him to go for:

Minimum 2gb RAM
Core 2 Duo processor, preferably 2ghz

What is a good level of Cache? And how important is it?

And minimum 160GB hard-drive.

Basically we're aiming for a laptop that runs and loads programs quickly, and can multitask well. Gaming is of no real issue at all.

If you could recommend a spec in the format like this:

CPU Speed -Ghz
Hard Drive Capacity -GB

And if you know any good price laptops, could you point me in that direction.

Reckon we could get one for sub ?400?

This question didnt really seem to fit in any of the catagories, but im running off XP Media center edition, so i thought this was fitting enough.
Ive been having some trouble with my laptop lagging after a while of being turned on. Usually happens when im running something on the internet that takes a lot of CPU or a program that takes a lot of CPU.

My laptop usually sits on a table that is made of a relatively soft wood. The surface is soft enough that you can dig your nails into it without pressing very hard, so it seems to me like it would absorb a lot of heat. Right now i am feeling the bottom of the table, and can feel the heat going through. There is also an internet connection in 2 rooms of my house. Only one of them can be used at a time, due to having only one modem. The cable in the other room was left there from previous use, and is not to be regularly used because the room is generally off-limits (a bedroom).

Due to the bedroom being empty for the last week, i took it over and put my laptop in there. There is a solid hard wood table in there, which i placed my laptop on, as well as the other internet cable. When i used my computer in this room, it ran more smoothly than it has in a very long time. The internet was not laggy, and im not sure, but i dont think it heated up near as much.

My question is, do you think it worked better in that room because of a better internet connection, or the table itself?

thanks ;D

Answer:Laptop Surface Or Internet Connection?

I also forgot to mention, if the problem is the table i am using, is there anything i could place under the laptop while its on this table to stop the table from collecting heat?

After 15002 installed on my SP3 with Surface Dock, now when the machine boots up all goes well, I can login, and it begins to draw the desktop, then stops. I can move the mouse and play with desktop icons, but if I move down to the Start button or task bar all i get is a spinning, busy pointer.

I've left it in this state overnight with no progress, but if I disconnect the docking station it immediately proceeds and completes the boot sequence, and I can plug the docking station back in and all is well going forward.

This isn't a show-stopper, but it's annoying. I have two external monitors connected to the Dock, fyi.

I would like to get a gaming laptop with good battery life. I'm thinking about getting the upcoming HP Pavilion Gaming Notebook. I'm wondering if the Surface Book with dGPU could function as a decent gaming laptop. I haven't read anything about how it handles cooling during gaming. Any thoughts? The HP would certainly be cheaper but the Surface Book gets better battery life, perhaps. I also prefer 16:9 over 3:2. Any thoughts?

Answer:Gaming laptop versus Surface Book

Go with the HP, you get a quad-core i5 instead of the Surface Book's dual-core i5, standard 1080p screen (Surface has a weird 3000x2000 display which no game I know of supports), 4 GB VRAM vs 2 GB VRAM, upgradable RAM and HDD.
The HP's 950 isn't as powerful as the Surface Book's 960, but since you'll be playing on a 1080p screen instead of 2000p you'll see better framerates at native resolution.

Why will my Microsoft Office Outlook Calendar and contacts not update from my laptop to my Surface Pro 3. e-mails from Outlook are no problem. Am I naive or what?

Answer:How do I get my Outlook Calendar and Contacts from my Laptop to my Surface Pro 3?

What e-mail account are you using between the two? If it is a Microsoft Account (live/Hotmail/outlook) then you may have multiple calendars and contact lists. You need to make sure you are adding calendar events or contacts onto the Microsoft Account's calendar or list.
If you go to calendar and see your events: look on the bottom-left and see if the calendar you are viewing says "this computer only" on it. If it does then that will explain why nothing is synchronizing between devices.

Hi ,which of the following two devices you would recommend
- Surface pro 4 Core M3-6Y30 HDD 128GB RAM 4GB or
- Surface 3 Atom x7-Z8700 HDD 128GB RAM 4GB
I have Surface Pro first edition with Intel Core i5, but would like more light and thin tablet with long lasting battery. I do not game nor draw, thus consider that the power of the above two would be just fine for using MS office, Inet browsing and HD videos (incl. MKV files).
What do you think?

Answer:Surface pro 4 Core M3-6Y30 or Surface 3 Atom x7-Z8700 ?

The Surface pro 4 is in fact the better device. The only possible argument is that some people might want the ability to add LTE connectivity, prefer the smaller screen and or smaller price of the Surface 3.
SP4 Pros
The Core M processor is going to be better than an Atom Processor
Larger (higher resolution) Screen and Smaller bezel
Better keyboard that has space between keys and larger (glass) trackpad
Windows Hello Iris Scanner
Gorilla Glass 4
8 megapixel rear shooter and 5 megapixel front shooter
But if you do not care about the above advantages and or prefer LTE capability, a smaller display, and a smaller price then by all means the Surface 3 is probably for you
