On my previous computer with Windows 2000, I was able to make incremental backups of a Microsoft Word document while it was being created by me. The advantage of this was that if an "accident" happened and the document was lost or corrupted before it was completed or saved to a folder, the partially completed document could be retrieved from a special folder somewhere in C-drive. I was able to specify how often a new backup was created (ex.: every 3 minutes, ex.; every 10 minutes, etc.). It is possible that this special folder also contained backups of all previously saved Word documents, which were also being re-backed up every few minutes. -- I cannot find any reference to this on my new computer (Windows XP and Microsoft Word 2002) in the Windows search engine, or in the Word user interface "Help". I cannot remember how I found this feature on my previous (W~2000) computer. -- Thanks
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
I just found where to set up this feature (Word user interface > tools > options > save and also file locations. BUT I STILL NEED HELP BECAUSE THE FEATURE DOES NOT SEEM TO WORK.
1 more repliesTrying to purchase a new laptop I find that although picture CDs created in Word 2002 will open document ones will not. "A dialogue box is open" it tells me. The salespeople tell me I have to purchase Works Suite 2003 (I only require Word) in addition to the already installed Works 8.0 at a cost ranging from £40 to a staggering £350. Surely I could just install Word from the disc I have for my desktop, and why is it necessary to change the system?Sheila.
You are correct Sheila, you can install word from another ther disc, but the problem is that technicaly your user licence from microsoft is for a single user nad so of course they will not want oyu to use the disc from your desktop on to your laptop. As i say you could install the disc but be aware of copyright infringement. you would only need to spend £350 on the complete office package. if you wanted the latest version of word you could download a trial of office proffesional (Beta) this has not been released for sale but microsoft are looking for people who are prepared to try it for a limited time for free ( until the end of January i think) and give there opinion.if this is not what you want then buy a copy of word from somewhere like pc world or somewhere reputable for about £70. if you are a student you could always obtain a copy of the student office edition for about £100, the advantage of this is that it will give you other packages as well as word such as excel and publisher.I hope this helps kind regardsMike

I am in a battle with our association. I own a condo in florida and shortly after buying it the board changed the rental rule. They did so without 2 week notice to owners so we were unable to speak. The board president is what we call a dictator(his way or take highway). We had a hearing and he and one other person stated that they gave the 2 week notice sent out and posted on Sept 6. I was able to examine the computer records and microsoft word shows the created date as being Sept 16. How reliable is this? My wife and I have been made out to be liars by him. Your help is appreciated. Thanks in advance
As long as the system Date/Time was not changed on the machine it was created on the timestamp is accurate...This however can be done fairly easily...
3 more repliesHi There
First of all I found following thread about event handler registration:
"How to get a Word 2003 macro to fire just before printing"
This solution works almost perfect for me but I need it in the normal.dot. When I open the normal.dot (not new documtent) the registration works. But when I create a new document based on the normal.dot template I get a new document with all macros and stuff in it. Just the part of "ThisDocument" is missing and this is the place where I do my event handler registration.
Is there a way to put some code based on a normal.dot into "ThisDocument" of my new created document?
Thanks

When saving a Word 2007 document as a webpage (htm, html), an extra folder is automatically created besides the hmtl document itself. This folder contains background information like pictures, wallpaper etc. Is there a way to prevent that folder from being created in the first place? I've got Word 2000 on another computer, and when I save my word documents as html files over there, that extra folder is not generated. The only time that folder is created in 2000 is if my documents contain pictures, wallpaper etc. In Word 2007, it is created all the time, even though my documents are just plain text.
Managed to find the solution, it was very simple after all. One has to save the document as a filtered webpage and click "yes" when a box pops up warning you that you will use certain featuers which are specific to Office2007, such as the background. Then the document will save without that extra folder and files.
I have two questions regarding documents created in Word 2007...
1) Can links be created within a Word document? For example, can I click on and item my table of contents and have the document jump to that particular section of the document?
2) Also, is there a way to make sections of the document hidden until the user clicks a specific word or graphic in the document?
I'd like to specify a particular instruction and include a "Show example" link that would make a detailed example appear for those who needed the extra help.
Thanks everyone!
If you created table of contents through References - Table of Contents, you can hold Ctrl and click on the item in that table, word will take you there. This feature is standard.
Also, to navigate inside document you can use bookmark option.
Insert bookmarks. Word 2010 Bookmarks
Then insert Hyperlink - in the window select second tab "Place in This Document" and choose your bookmark.
As for hiding parts of document, I do not think that is possible.
You can create that in HTML document with javascript, but not in Word document.

Yes, you are right. That is normal for MS Word.Do this:Open a new document. Type something. Even a single space. Save it with a name you want. Now open an older document. Both documents can be on the screen or cascaded. If memory is not an issue, you can haven two instances of Word.

This has pretty much happened since I got this laptop. I have reformatted and reinstalled everything (due to another problem) and still have the same problem with word. I have used the same CD on other computers to install word and they do not have the same problem.
I use a variety of templates and plain documents in my work and can not pin point it to one template.
If you leave Word open with a document (no matter what size) and come back to it later this is when the problem happens. I started to get around it my saving first then closing, but this no longer works. The save completes and then I select Close and this is when it happens - you get the dreaded pause and then you hear the whirl of the computer and then you get the Microsoft Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. Is there any free software out there that will allow me to scan a document and convert it into word/excel and allow editing?
you are going to want to search for OCR programs.
Try "freeware OCR" in google or check out www.Softpedia.com

This might be kind of tricky.
We're trying to streamline our RFQ-to-Quote process, which currently utilizes a combination of digital forms and hand-written forms passed among several departments. My boss asked me to modify the RFQ form to save him some typing (because he has to retype all the information in the final Quote), and I--not understanding the complexity of the process--very stupidly told him that it could be done fairly simply using form fields and bookmarks. He's been kind enough to grant me a lot of leniency because for him anything would be better than the current situation, so as long as I can improve on what we use now, he'll be happy.
I thought about creating form templates for each of the departments, then as the original RFQ circulated from one department to the next subsequent forms would be appended to it to create a rolling document. I'm not too happy with the that idea; there's all sorts of room for user error. I thought about creating a single document template containing every department's form, but a) I don't want any single department to be able to modify information gathered during another department's process, and b) certain departments must generate a variable number of copies of their form.
I told my boss the best way to accomplish a secure and low-maintenance RFQ-to-Quote would be to create a stand-alone Quote Generator application, but we both agree the effort is not condusive to the timeframe by whic... Read more
Hi all.
The other day whilst in the throws of fixing another unrelated problem I came across a strange and annoying Word Document problem.
When I bought this word document up it present a very unusual icon. It was grayed out and part of the title contained a ~$ then the name of the document.
When I tried to open it, the word document only opened up to the gray page just before it should turn white displaying the text, and there it froze.
Nothing worked after that! The freeze was so bad that the only way to close the window was to turn the computer off at the tower.
After rebooting I tried it again 2 more times with the same problem freeze occurring in the Word document.
Today I again found another document that caused the same problem, this time the icon for that document was normal but right beside this icon was another malformed grayed out ~$(name) icon.
When I tried to open either of the 2 icons I got the same freezing up problem, just as before.
I tried a previously suggested step in that I opened "Word" and from there navigated to where the bad files were located.
In turn I only hi-lighted each, and at the bottom of that window clicked on the arrow for the drop down box.
I was advised that one of the presented options was to repair the file. No such option was present.
So there you have it. Any advice on this problem please?

Hi all.
Just to advise that I am going to mark this topic as Solved......to a fashion so to speak.
I may resurrect it at a later stage if the problem re-presents it's self.
In a nut shell. I spent a lot of time today searching sites and performing tests including searches on my computer program.
I ascertained that all the aforementioned "defective " Word documents originated in the same folder. After performing several search functions with the criteria as ~$.doc no other such files were found on my computer, other that the already mentioned.
All tests suggested would not repair the said documents.
I have now deleted the offenders and I will monitor the situation. If I run into problems again I will re-post.
Thanks anyway.

I am wondering how to make an hyperlink, from a main document, to a sentence of a sub document that got included through {INCLUDETEXT \\....docx} in the main document?
I posted yesterday this question in another forum.

Hi,
I work at a small non-profit and we have updated two computers with new computers running Windows 7. We use MS Word 2003. I have checked all threads on forum related to this issue, but nothing seems to correct our problem. I would be grateful for any help.
Description of issue: With a Word document open, one should be able to click "File" > "Send To" > Mail Recipient As Attachment", or any of the other mail options, and have the email composition window of Thunderbird pop up. What happens is that Word is attempting to send the attachment via Windows Live Mail. The computer basically freezes. If you try and abort or get out of Word, and error pops up stating you can't close Word until the email has been sent. Finally, you have to force a shut down of the computer.
Internet Explorer shows Thunderbird as default email client. I have check all of the other obvious places for setting the default email client, but I can't seem to find a conflict anywhere on the computer showing Windows Live Email as default client.
As a side note, this employee was using Outlook Express as their email client prior to the computer upgrade and all setting were imported into Windows Live Mail, which was initially used. The employee did not like Windows Live Mail, so I installed Thunderbird. It is used as the default email client and the only issue has been with Word. Additionally, I know that the document could be sent from Windows Explorer by right-cli... Read more
Might try uninstalling Word, then reinstalling it.
Can anyone help - When typing a word document my laptop keeps sending the document when I start typing. Not sure why. Any help appreciated
Hello
I don?t know what you mean with laptop keeps sending the document but if you have this issue with office word or some other office application, try to check some forum where you can find discussion about similar theme.
I can not give you any precise answer but it is maybe because of office specific settings or you press accidentally some key on the keyboard and on this way interrupt symbols entering.
Dear all previously i have posted for Trojan issue and subsequently received responses from your team on time Now i am interested to know or get rid of issue with word 2003, installed in windows home basic 7 platform.......I work in several Word 2003 documents (on Windows 7 platform) at the same time. When I open the first document it stays open (maximized). If I open a second document, the document opens, but then immediately minimizes down to the task bar. Same result if I open a third document. If I click on the minimized documents to open them again, they open and stay open. why I am seeing a button for each open document in the Task Bar. with Thanks

3 more repliesI was working on a Word document that someone sent me by email in form of rar and saved the document. I now can't find the revised file and I have lost about 8 hours of work. Any ideas on where I can find this file? I looked in the email that was originally sent, but it is still the old file. I have also done searching on my computer with no luck. Help, I'm desperate!!! I have Word 2007. Please give me reply as soon as possible.
If you were only hitting "Save" and not "Save As" the document is likely, unfortunately, gone. You can try opening Word by itself and going through recent documents to see if it shows up. If you opened it directly from the email and the email was in Outlook, you might be able to find it in the Outlook Secure Temp Folder. To get to this folder, the easiest way is to send yourself a PDF file, open the PDF from the email then go to File | Properties and on the General tab (this is from memory, so I might be off a little bit) you'll find a location that you can click on. In this folder, you have a slight chance of finding the modified file. The only other option you have, that I can think of, would be digging through your temp folders hoping to find a .tmp or .doc file in there that has the content, but I give that about a .01% chance of happening. Good Luck!
Hello,
I used mail merger to create 25 letters to different locations and different people. The source used for the names and address's were from an excel file. I used "Edit Individual Documents" in order to get all the letters in one document. Now the problem is i need a backup of each letter on my computer and i have no clue if its even possible to save each page in the master document as a unique document. If not, is there a way of saving each unique document of a mail merger?
Thanks in advance.
URGENT!! (Isn't it always?) I need to convert a multiple tab excel document to a word document. I read that I can save as a pdf, then convert to word but I have only Adobe Reader. If this can be done, is there a way to conserve the original format and the links in the excel doc?I would prefer leaving in excel but the customer needs a word document. Also, just in case I can convince to leave in excel -- is there a way to print the excel file as one document without printing each tab separately? If so, how do I ensure the formatting looks good to print as a regular 8.5 x 11 document? Thanks for any help.

5 more repliesI have a client with a problem creating new documents from the File > New > Word Document dropdown from Windows Explorer window. If I set her default font to Times New Roman it will stay for creating new documents from within Word. If she goes the other route mentioned above to create a new document it will always default to Courier. Also when she tries to save the document with the Save As item it defaults to txt instead of a .doc file. I am thinking there are two different templates for these two seperate ways of opening or creating a document.

I'm creating a document in word 2007 at one point of the document I want to insert a link or icon that points to a separate word document, when the master document is saved both documents are saved as one file so that i can distribute it to other people not linked on a LAN. I don't need the second document to be seen but launched on a separate window when the link or icon is clicked.
Can somebody please help I've seen this on emails and PP presentations but I'm not sure if it can be done in word, I would think so!

Not hard at all. Open the attached - I have included the instructions to show either the other text (or at least part) or just the icon.
Hi,
I am not sure if this is possible in word, but say I have document A. I place document A within document x, document y, and document z. Is it possible to make changes to document A and have the changes updated automatically to documents x, y, and z?
I hope this makes sense.
Thanks
The only simple way is to go to Insert, Object, Create from file and choose to insert your file as a link (these are 2003 instructions - would be similar in 2007, though.) However, you will then get a questions about the file having links and do you want to update...every time you open the file.
You could also just insert some text and hyperlink it to the other file.
Finally, someone could probably write some VBA that would insert the file and update it every time you opened it.
Does anyone know which format is quicker to 'rip'.The size of the document is around 60 pages containing Tables, Thumbnail pictures and text. Many thanks.Angry ;)
document contains formatting information created by another application, it appear as garbage characters mixed with the document?s normal text in wordpad.
Is a way to fix that?
Regard,
Thanks.
Is there any way to find out what the format is supposed to be? Most programs go by the file extension when they try to read it. They don't usually analyze the content. If it was .rtf then wordpad should be able to handle it. Try the free Word reader. Maybe it's an MSWord file.
9 more repliesThis post contains the same material as my earlier post "Access violation at address 019C44F3. Read of address 83C70A78. Edit Post". I tried to rename or delete that post and didn't know how. (I'm new to this forum.) Sorry.
Now my question:
The problem was found when I was using the TuneUp DiskCleaner to scan the hard drive labled F (the "File" drive). The scanning was stopped when it reached a folder (a folder that contains html pages that someone sent to me and I saved there), and a error message popped up saying "Access violation at address 019C44F3. Read of address 83C70A78."
I repeated the scanning and the exactly same thing happened -- even the error address reported was the same.
I tried to delete the folder from the explorer window. But everytime after I press the "delete" button, the explorer just breaks down, while that folder remains there the next time I open the explorer. The same thing happens in when I tried to delete it in the safe mode.
Strangely, I was able to rename the folder. It just can't be deleted.
Since everytime the same error address was reported, I assumed there could be some defect with the hard drive. So I launched a thorough scan of the F drive using TuneUp Disk Doctor, which reached the deepest level by checking every 512 bytes sector. The scan took about 20 minutes, but nothing wrong was found.
Can any one help me figure out what's wrong? Thanks.
Hi MrGoodChina
Try gaining ownership of that folder and it's files --- http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;308421 --- see if that does it.
Best of luck

Hi....
I'm using word 2010.
I have a Mailmerge document (actually a company letter with header and footer, used by a package called "Cash4Windows" [C4W]). This document usually has the recipients name and address etc. inserted by C4W.
The document is a template - "xxx.dotx".
What I want to do is strip out the Mailmerge fields and save the document as a normal Word 2010 document, 'cos the User wants to have a blank standard company document available.
I've spent a long time fiddling with the Header and Footer to get just what the User wanted, and I know i could just cut-n-paste the Header and Footer into a new document, then save it as "xxx.docx", but when I looked on various help sites the normal method in Word 2010 seems to be
on the ribbon tab
Select Mailings
Select "Start Mail Merge"
Select "Normal Word Document"
then save the Word document.
I've tried this and it has absolutely no effect, as when I close and reopen Word and select the previously saved document, I still get the "Opening the document will run the following SQL command" splash screen!
I've tried saving the "normalised" document with various different extensions, but nothing seems to get rid of the SQL.
I've also tried opening the VBA editor (Alt+F11) to see if I can find the SQL, thinking that if I can delete the SQL it might cause Word to avoid the prompt, but I can't even find the SQL!!!

The problem occurred without warning after many previous instances of trouble-free copying of Notepad text into MS Word 2010. Here?s an example of what happens:-1. I type a sentence into Notepad.2. I then attempt to copy and paste it into an open MS Word file.3. The cursor in the resulting MS Word file stops blinking on completion of the ?paste? process. A few seconds later, MS Word indicates ?not responding?.4. I press CTRL + ALT + DEL to open the Task Manager.5. On doing this and clicking on the MS Word document in the Task Manager and selecting ?End Task?, a message box stating ? WINWORDC.EXE is not responding?, with 3 option buttons, pops up. One of the 3 option buttons is ?Close program?.6. When I click on ?Close program?, another message box pops up saying ?WINWORDC is trying to recover your information?. Then, a few seconds later, the MS Word document closes (but without saving the text copied from the Notepad file).
You could try the repair option to Microsoft Office 2010. To access it, go to control panel/program and features. Right click on Microsoft Office and select "change". Select "Repair" then continue. Good luck!
3 more repliesIn Word 2010 there is a direct option to share and save any word file to SkyDrive directly simply by configuring your Windows Live ID. To Save your any doc file to SkyDrive follow the steps given below one by one and get your docment saved on your account directly from your desktop:
1. Open any Word document which you want to save to skydrive.
2.Click on File menu and then select Save to SkyDrive.
3. In the right panel th SkyDrive login page will start retrieving. As the page retrieves it will prompt you for Login credentials of yourWindows Live ID. Just give your ID and Password and login.
4. As you get login you will see your folders already present on your SkyDrive. Now you can save the document file to that folders or you can create a new folder and then click on SaveAs.
Now you can share and use your documents from anywhere in the world directly from your desktop via Office 2010. Happy Windows Computing !!!

When I download save or display a word document which is locked some of the fonts change and this makes the documant look bad and as a result it is not paged correctly.
I am using Windows 7 and MS Office Home & Business 2010.
If I use a different computer which is XP and 2003 the document displays correctly, if I copy this to the Windows 7 PC the document font is changed.
The lock document is a form which has been locked for easy completion.
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Found the problem, Windows7 and or MS Office Home & Business 2010 is missing the particular font the document wanted, it was Arial Narrow, once this font was added to the windows/font folder, the document opened correctly.
i cant open that document any more please help its my project due tomorrow, when ever i try to open its says that it protected for editing
Is it saved as read only, or protected with a password? Theoretically you should be able to do a save as to a .rtf, if you can open it read only.:: mike
2 more repliesHi,
I am developing an add-in for outlook that consists of creating a customized send button next to the standard one. when outlook is configured to use the word editor, when I add the customized send button to the command bar of the mail in edit mode, the add-in is also added in word document. The reason is that the word editor is activated in outlook. How can I tell my add-in not to add the button in word as well. I don't want to deactivate the editor word. There must be a way how to detect the opened application. I searched for my problem on the internet and people said to test if the kind of the document is word mail or word document. Here's part of my code that didn't work correctly:

addsendbutton();

i had to do a paper and its really long. i saved it as Xml as usual and it has been fine. i opened it to make some final fixes and it looks like this:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="yes"?><?mso-application progid="Word.Document"?>
<w:wordDocument xmlns:w="http://schemas.microsoft.com/office/word/2003/wordml" xmlns:number="urnasis:names:tcpendocument:xmlns:datastyle:1.0" xmlns:w10="urn:schemas-microsoft-comffice: word" xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml" xmlns:dt="uuid:C2F41010-65B3-11d1-A29F-00AA00C14882" xmlns:aml="http://schemas.microsoft.com/aml/2001/core" xmlns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com: office: office"
thats only a little bit of it. please tell me how to get it back to normal!
sorry about the smiles
Retrieve in it word, then watch the box at the bottom of the screen as you file or save it as a .doc file, then review the ?xml info.
The Document Object Model (DOM) class is an in-memory representation of an XML document. The DOM allows you to programmatically read, manipulate, and modify an XML document. The XmlReader class also reads XML, however it provides non-cached, forward-only, read-only access. This means that there are no capabilities to edit the values of an attribute or content of an element, or the ability to insert and remove nodes with the XmlReader. Editing is the primary function of the DOM. It is the common and structured way that XML data is represented in memory, although the actual XML data is stored in a linear fashion when in a file or coming in from another object.
There is plenty of useful information on xml documents and file structure in the Microsoft knowledge base, or even with a Google search.
Please help! I have a word document I am quite certain was saved to my desktop, only now I am unable to locate the file. I have visited recent documents in Word, it sees the document, but when I click to open the file, a pop-up appears that says the path does not exist.
I have performed a search for the file on my computer (searching all drives and files). I find the document, but again, it says the path does not exist. When I search for it this way, it shows that it is a shortcut on my computer and suggests it may have been moved. However, the search does not find it anywhere else.
I have also searched in the hidden files and folders but the document I need is not there either.
Can someone please help with other ideas of where I can try to locate the document?
Thank you for helping this girl in distress!
The best search tool I know of is Everything. It's free from voidtools.com. It's fantastic. Keep it around.
It will quickly index your drive. You then enter at least a portion of the file name into the search box and it should find it just about as fast as you can type the name.
There's always a chance you deleted it or the file became corrupt for unknown reasons.
The "recent documents" list won't help if you moved it away from that location on purpose or accidentally, but you knew that.
When I try to in large an image on word it stops responding how do I fix this problem
What version of word are you using? What do you consider large? Have you tried to compress the image? If your running other processes your PC may be running out of memory.

Hi, can someone help me with a document I have made in Word for myself and family to use. The page has words down the LH side, and at the bottom a box. Information has to be added to the RH side of the page and in the box.I need the LH words and the box to be locked in place so that another person entering information cannot delete these, change the position of the words change the position or size of the box. We need to save the document once the information has been entered but always to be able to find the origonal document (template).Thank you for any assistance.
This came up in the Help system for Word 2000. (Go in to Help, and search for Protect and then look at the Protect Forms item.)"Prevent users from changing a form containing form fieldsAfter creating a form that users will view and complete in Word, you must protect it so that users can enter information only in the designated areas. On the Tools menu, click Protect Document. Show Me Click Forms. To assign a password to the form so that users who know the password can remove the protection and change the form, type a password in the Password box. Users who don't know the password can still enter information in the form fields. To protect the entire form, click OK. To protect only parts of a form, those parts must be in separate sections. Click Sections, and then clear the check boxes of the sections you don't want to protect. Tip When you are designing or changing a form, you can quickly protect the form or remove protection from it by clicking Protect Form on the Forms toolbar." Hope this helps you.TonyV

3 more repliesHi there:
everytime I open up Word, the same document opens up automatically.
When I click on the "New Blank Document" button in the tool bar, the same document opens up.
Any suggestions?
Reboot in safe mode, and delete normal.dot That's the template for the blank document. Apparently, your document was saved as a .dot instead of a .doc and corrupted the blank new document.
I've just reinstalled Word 2000 and adjusted page set-up to suit the margins and top/bottom spacings I prefer. I can't remember how to save these margin settings so that they appear each time a Word document is started. Can someone help? Thanks in anticipation.
find and open normal.dot. make adjustments requiredSAVE AS normal.dot (you will need to select .dot from file types drop down)Everytime you open Word with a new/blank document it will use normal.dot as the template.
4 more repliesWelcome, sherrylabtec.
What's your OCR program? With something like OmniPage, you should just be able to choose File > Save As, and choose MS Word document. And the later versions, since at least 9.0, have wizards that will walk you through conversion.
Post back with some details about how you're scanning, and we'll help you out.
I am using Windows Vista and I have Microsoft Office 2007. I have a HP Photosmart D110 Series scanner/printer. I have been told that I can produce *.doc documents from scanned JPG or PDF formats. I have not been able to achieve this, nor have I found anyone who can help me do it. All, however tell me that I should be able to do it.
I have tried Microsoft Document Imaging, but all Format is lost and the font is all the same font and text size, whereas the original had more than one font and varied test sizes.
Try with one of these

Well, I was going to type it all. But it goes on a whole lot longer than I thought.
Does anybody know what the problem is with this document & how I can fix it?
I use Windows XP Home & Word 2000.
Thanks.
Does this problem only affect this one document or all Word docs? Have you tried opening the document on another PC that has MS Office Installed? Have you tried using a different Word processing program? Have you tried to start Word in SafeMode?
If you don't have access to another PC with MS Office installed you can try to download a different word processing program such as OpenOffice to see if it will open the Doc. You can also try opening the document using Notepad (right click and select "Open With" and select Notepad)
To Open Word in SAFE MODE
1. Select Run from the Windows Start menu
2. Type winword.exe /a (you must insert the space before the /a
(You may also need to type the full file path of Windword.exe))
3. Click OK

Can someone help me figure out an easy way to get a PDF file into a Word 2007 document. I tried copy the file to my clipboard, but nothing copies into my document when I try pasting it.
hi, there's a few ways to do it, either with software, or online which is probably easier if you don't do it that often.
suggestions: google "convert .pdf to .doc software" for a software search or
follow this link which i normally use: http://www.convertpdftoword.net/ (quick, easy, no installations)
thanks
I'm using Wins2000 professional. Every time I open a new document in Word I get three pages. I would like to know how I can get it back to only one page when I open up a new document.
hmmm, that's a weird one.
Have you added any new macros to your normal.dot template??
Anyway, try doing a search on your system for normal.dot and when you find it, rename it to normal.old and then start Word again and see what happens.
If you did not make any changes to your normal.dot template, and the above works, then you can just delete the normal.old

I have made a brochure (containing a table)in MS Word97 in *.doc format. The brochure needed to be transferred to my mother-in-law's PC for printing as we don't have a printer. Anticipating compatibility issues (we use MS Office on a system running Win98SE; she uses MS Works on a system running WinXP), I made one page and opened it on her PC. The PC read and printed my test document and I assumed it would work. I then spent the day making the brochure, FTPing and downloading it to her PC. Now when I go to open the documents, Works says that it can't read them (I tried various options - double-clicking to open; selecting different *.doc file extensions from the drop down menu etc). I downloaded the Word97 viewer from Microsoft and it, too, claims not to be able to read the documents. Is there anything I can do to make her PC recognise these documents? And why can't different Microsoft word processors read each other's file formats??? Arrrrrgh! Please help!Jill
Any version of Microsoft Word should be able to read a document from the same or an earlier version of Word. As long as you have saved the document as Word Document (*.doc). Opening the document from within Word is the safest way.

2 more repliesI have an old document created in Word Perfect 5.1 saved on a floppy disk. My present computer has Windows 98 and Microsoft Word. I need to edit and print the old Word Perfect document. Can it be translated to Word? Thanks.
You should be able to hit File-Open from Word. Change the files of type (at the bottom of the dialog box) to "all files, *.*" and just double-click the Wordperfect document. It should automatically convert it.
After that, if I were you, I'd go to Tools-Options, Compatibility tab. Change compatibility to Word document. Then, hit ctrl-a to select the entire document, go to Format-Paragraph and make sure line spacing is single; then change the font to Arial, Times new roman, or other Word font, as opposed to the old Wordperfect fonts.
Hello all,
On the 12th October I was editing a Word 2007 document on my Vista Home laptop. Throughout editing I pressed Ctrl S to save the doc over the previous version. I copied data in from several other files.
I went back yesterday to edit the document again and it has disappeared. The only version of the doc is a previous version dated 21st Sept.
I searched on all files modified after 11th Oct just in case I had saved it under another name. Not in there. The files I copied data from did come up in the search results though, soi knwo the search function is working.
I checked the default Autosave location - not in there.
I checked the recycle bin - the doc is not in there and neither are any ~ files or autosaved files. I haven't emptied my recycle bin for months.
I cannot find a word doc modified afetr the 11th October.
Can it really just have disappeared? It is my MBA dissertation paper and I worked on this edit for an awful lot of hours.
Many thanks.

Is there a way to close a Word document in Word 2007 without going to the dropdown menu? What happened to the little 'x' in the upper right hand corner that all other Windows programs still have? I have the minimize, maximize, and large 'X', but if I am only working on 1 Word document and click the large X, the file AND Word both shutdown. Is there any way to get the little 'x' back?
Go in word options/personalize and add the command "close"
The icon to close the current document will appear on the upper left tool bar.
I had created a word file yesterday. But today while working on it, I tried to save, it gave a error message and closed the word window.I have ~word.tmp file. Tried to rename/ copy but it says make sure the file is not open.Request to hel me to retrieve the file
Are you using Microsoft Word? Or WordPad? Word uses either .doc or .docx as the file extension, WordPad uses .rtf or .txt. If you've already named & saved the file yesterday, that's the file you should be looking for. Chances are the original is still good but any changes you made today probably didn't 'stick'.
3 more repliesWord 2016 is not using the up to date word document. When I go to save after opening up a brand new word doc. It tells me it will be updated to the latest word doc. I am using Office 2016 Pro on Windows 10 64bit HP laptop. Any advice would be welcome.
Thank you in advance.
Hi Hollyoaks777
Just so I have it straight, when you say "opening up a brand new document" do you mean you have a blank document that you open, say on your desktop (as a shortcut), or does this happen when you click File then New.
Have you checked Options => Save to see if there is an option box to control this behavior?

I am a teacher in Tennessee and I need to find a software that will enable me to edit and change a scanned document. I have some old tests and worksheets that I inherited from the teacher that had my room before me. I would like to make some minor changes to the documents without having to retype the entire set of documents. (Things like change the date and the teacher name on the heading, etc...)
Is there a software out there that will allow me to scan a document in and then alter it? These are not copyrighted materials, so that is not an issue.
Preferably, I would like a freeware or shareware or trial version of something to make sure I can navigate it before I shell out a chunk of cash to purchase something.
As a teacher, it is important to me that my materials look professionally done, so I would prefer to edit them on a computer rather than use white out and pen.
thank you so much

You can use OCR, i.e text recognition. I'm not 100% sure if Adobe Reader does it, but Adobe Acrobat Pro definitely does. There's probably a few other free alternatives out there as well.

Hi, I am trying to edit somethings in a XML document and save it as a notepad or wordpad document. I open it with notepad or wordpad and it allows me to make the changes. However, each time I save it after opening it in notepad or wordpad, it then reverts back to been a XML document.
In Notepad/Wordpad, choose Save As and save it with a .txt extension, or else make a copy and change the extension of that from .xml to .txt

I want to be able to save the documents I've written in Word directly to a pdf, in much the same way as OpenOffice.org allows you to do.
Software such as Distiller($5000) and Acrobat($300) are out of the question due to their steep price tags. Are there any good, free (read: no ads or spyware) programs which will allow me to save a Word document directly as a pdf? Are there any reasonably priced programs which can do this?
Sort of an odd question since you answered it yourself. OpenOffice.org is most likely the best one for the job if price matter since it's free. staroffice could also do it mind you.
I'm sure there are most likely some other ones out there but they'd most likely have even more conversion issues then OpenOffice.org so I wouldn't recommend using them.
I am having problems correcting Word Documents, ie: If I have finished typing line three, for instance, and then enter info in line four, and then see that I did not space between two words in line three and try to go back and do that I cannot get a space, but only a delete. The only solution I have found is to retype the entire sentence which is a pain. I hope I have made this clear enough to understand...any suggestions?
I had a document in Word 2003 which I saved to desktop - now when I open the said document, it is blank - yet it had information on it when it was saved. Is there any way I can retrieve this document?Judy
Actually, I did a search for *.doc and have discovered not one of my Word documents have anything in them. I changed the default from Kingsoft writer to Windows 3 one or two days ago. I went into Kingsoft writer, and opened up a few documents - they all opened OK. When I tried to open the original missing document, it said something about disable macros - so I did, and the document came back. Can any one tell me what/why it happened, and what do macros do?

2 more repliesI have created a Word document which is a form to be fillied in by others, so it is locked and has form fields which users can type in.On the first page, there's a field into which the user enters their name. I want this name to then appear at the bottom of every other page. I've done this by putting {BOOKMARK_NAME} in the footer. This works, except that the footer doesn't automatically update when the main Name field is changed: you have to click Print Preview to force an update. Is there a way that I can set the field in the footer to always update after the main name field has changed, without having to resort to macro coding which might mean the document won't run properly on some people's computers? Thanks,Gary
More repliesHi.
Just saved a word document with some password etc on to a CD,When I tried to add more info to the document thats on the CD.
A box comes on screen cant save this its read only,Can I have some help here please I would like to use this method and edit after.
Running windows 7 and burned the CD with CD burner xp.
Thanks,Would be glad of some help.
Are you using a rewritable CD?
They are labeled CD-RW.
If it's not a CD-RW you can't update files already burned to the CD.
If it's a "write once" CD I believe you can add more files if you did not do a "finalized" burn.
They are labeled CD-R.
I did some homework recently on my brothers computer using word, and saved it as a word file. That was rather stupid because I don't have word, and opening the documents with any program i have results in strange symbols randomly distributed throughout the document. Anyone know of a good conversion program, or anyone have word and want to convert them for me?
Thanks!
The free version of office is also known as OpenOffice.

It's open source, so it's free. Almost all linux users use it.

I all of a sudden I cannot e-mail any of my Word documents.

Hi,
I have a 300+page Word 07 document which is A-4 page size. I need to insert drawings that are A-3 that will need to remain full size for later searcheable pdf development for web posting. The A-3 will be folded to A-4 size for the printed copy.
I see how to change section page sizes, but A-3 or 11 x 17 are not available.

Hi
So i accidentally deleted an extremely important word document.
When I use keywords to search the file, the file appears. which indicates that the file is somehow alive. but when i click on it, it shows error that "this file does not exist"
If this file is deleted for good, why does it still appear in search.
and my computer search can read the contents of the file, it means it's not entirely deleted.
is there ANY way i can recover it?
I have tried data recovery softwares but they are all unhelpful.
PLEASE. PLEASE. PLEASE. help.
the file is crucial.
thank you.
If you have Autosave set (it usually is by default) look her to see where the files are saved.
From Word Help
*On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the File Locations tab.
In the File types box, click AutoRecover files.
Click Modify.
If you want to store automatically recovered files in a different folder, locate and open the folder.*
Hopefully you will then be able to track down your file.
Hello, I am creating a form that I want the user to be able to fill out, Print to file, and then reset all the form fields back to blank so that they can enter the next set of information, print to file, etc.
So far I have created the document as I have in the past with all the applicable fields and tested them in Protected mode to make sure they all function properly.
I cannot remember how to create the button so that it works, I have it on the page, but I cannot for the life of me figure out the code that I should use in MVB, to make it function the way I want.
I once had this worked out but it has been so long since I did it I can't not remember how it goes.
Thanks in advance for any assistance and suggestions.

This is an "Egg of Columbus"-solution.
If you don't like it, wait for another reply.
Create a form with blank fields and give it a name : "BLANK.DOC" for instance.
When the user needs to fill in a form, he opens BLANK.DOC.
Fills in the form and saves it as USER.DOC.
The BLANK.DOC still exists and can be re-used again.
The USER.DOC can be printed to file.
I have scanned a document and saved it in 'my documents' as a rich word document. What have I done wrong, that I cannot now edit it? I have just bought a new scanner (epson cX6600), and this only applies to documents since using it, documents that I saved previously, with another printer are fine.
should have added that I saved them from scanner to notepad.

my company has just added adobe acrobat 7 to our systems amd as part of it you get adobe designer, with this you can create forms that can be emailed as pdf files easy as anything. i dont know if ths is any use to you but i found it to be a superb solution to form creation and distribution
