Only 512Mb Memory, which free firewall & anti-virus/malware to use please?

Question: Only 512Mb Memory, which free firewall & anti-virus/malware to use please?

Hi folks,

I've got an older VAIO pc with 512mb memory. Currently its got norton internet security on it, and I'm constantly running up against memory problems when all I have open is firefox (I am bad about getting a ton of tabs open at once tho). I'm about to have to renew subscription, and planning to go to zone alarm and a free anti-virus/malware type of program.

I've been assuming that zone (free version) is probably the best firewall option - please pipe up if you disagree.

I'd like suggestions for free anti-virus/malware.... I assume the two top picks are probably AVG free & AVAST free? Open to others if you're pretty sure they're better than those two.

A big issue is the active/constantly in use memory that the program uses however, so I'm hoping that someone here knows which of these (or other good options) uses the lowest amount of active/constantly running memory? I'm not worried about it during scans since I can schedule those for when I'm offline & not otherwise using the computer - its the active, always running memory usage by the program that's the problem.

Thanks in advance!

Preferred Solution: Only 512Mb Memory, which free firewall & anti-virus/malware to use please?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Only 512Mb Memory, which free firewall & anti-virus/malware to use please?

For your AV go with Avira (it's the lightest on resources)
For the firewall Zonealarm is a good choice, also Comodo is worth a look aswell. im not sure how either do on the resource front but they are both very good firewalls.
[My personal recommendation would be Avira with Comodo]

Q
Oh yeah AVG fails IMO!

Greetings:I just had my computer formated again. The technician/friend who did the work told me that I needed a good anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware program. I told him that I previously had AVAST! (which was recommended on this Forum and which I liked immensely) but when he checked the AVAST! website, he pointed out to me that the free version only gives anti-virus protection but no firewall or anti-spyware protection. He especially feels that the firewall is essential security. Well, does anyone know where I can download for free a program that gives excellent anti-virus, firewall and anti-spyware protection? BTW, I welcome your comments on what technician/friend said. Do you agree or disagree with what he said? Thank you in advance for any advice given.

How long could you last if you were a normal PC user without an active Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware or a Firewall before getting attacked by someone?

Answer:How long could you last without Anti-Virus, Anti-Malware or Firewall?

Too many variables involved to be able to give any sort of credible answer. Someone who has a well configured browser and very safe surfing habits, would probably last longer than someone who is heavily involved with social media and peer to peer applications. As one comparative example.

Answer:Best free anti-virus/anti-malware/protection for Windows XP 32-bit

There is no universal "one size fits all" solution that works for everyone and there is no single best anti-virus. Every vendor's virus lab and program scanning engine is different. Each has has its own strengths and weaknesses and they often use a mix of technologies to detect and remove malware. In many cases choosing an anti-virus is a matter of personal preference and what works best on a particular system. You may need to experiment and find the one most suitable for your needs. Can you please tell me what firewall you are using and why.

For over a month I've been working with someone to get my host back.; whatever that means. Does this mean someone stole my identity? Any way, Windows Update still doesnt reconize or scan for previous downloads. The goal was to get Windows SP2 installed.
I have had past experince with SP1a disconnecting me from the internet. Now I realize it could have been all the spyware and trojans I had on my system.
Can you please share with me what (free) firewall and (free)anti virus your using, preferably im interested in shareware programs. I have Avast and not all the features are enabled.
Not at all knowledgable with opening ports, configuring ip and USD.
Im asking if someone will be kind to help me to setup my firewall setup as safely as any technician would do on his computer.
I am extreemly patient and truely appreciate time given to help protect the best way from Hijackers and spyware, etc

Needing protection soon,
Lyn

Answer:Which free Firewall & Anti-virus works the best?

Hi LynIf you would just visit the link below. You will find a most informative tutorial on computer security. The programs mentioned, are highly recommended and used by many here at Bleeping Computer. If you have any questions just reply to this thread. And someone will be more than happy to help you. Simple Steps to Keep Your Computer Securepreferably im interested in shareware programsShareware programs have a lot of spyware come along for the ride. So you should do your best to stay away from them. Besides there are a lot of trusted "freeware" programs available. Which may be what you meant. If you do not have a firewall, please make it a point to install one immediately if not sooner. You would not jump out of an airplane without a parachute, now would you. I had Avast. And it is a fine program. But I found it to be let's say... not very user friendly. Lol For me anyways. I now use Free AVG. More simple to use. I think so that is. And just as a fine program as Avast. I also use ZoneAlarm Free (firewall). The only one I've ever had. And I like it so I am sticking with it.

Now I know many of you will say there is no need for a firewall that will replace Ms's own one in Windows 8.1 and yes, I agree with you. But I wanted someting a bit more visually appealing and engaging. Plus I like experimenting with new software

Anyhoo it's not a problem but after a week I noticed that Security Centre was flashing messages at me that anti-virus protection was switched off. I currently use Avast which of course disables Defender. It listed Avast, Defender and Comodo as all switched off. I was able to activate Defender and I am now receiving updates for it.

Avast runs as a on demand scanner much in the same way as Malewarebytes. I can see that I have to update definitions manually.

So looking more closely at Comodo, all I have is a shortcut to Firewall (MS one is switched off) on my desktop but looking at the directories I can see that the folder is called Security which implies an anti-virus. It does have a scanner but if that is an anti-virus then it's rubbish

I'm happy with Defender as my principal defence even though Avast would be my first choice but annoyed that Comodo would sneak in something that is totally unwanted and conflicts with my chosen setup. This is beginning to sound more like a rant but I hate being duped.

And ps, my cpu is not up to virtulisation but it's interesting to see that I have a virtual desktop with Comodo. Don't know what to use it for as my browsing is limited but I'm always open to suggestions

Answer:Does free Comodo Firewall contain an anti-virus?

I dislike the free one ( and I vaguely recall it's a trial? )

Comodo Antivirus 2014 | Download Free Antivirus for Virus Protection

I have heard good things though about the PRO version.

As for the virtual part. A lot of people will use virtual desktops as their safe haven for banking online as it doesn't save no history or cookies to the computer/program.

Now I have my broadband I have become a bit more aware of security. Is Zone Alarm the best free Firewall? I would also like a program that detects and removes ad/spyware, although surely the firewall would block this. I decided to format my pc as on my process bar on XP there were alot of things which I didn't think should be there and my zone alarm was blocking a program called aserv2 which was using multiple ip address and I had to click on no about 20 times to stop it.

I've always loved AVG and Zone Alarm. But since switching to Vista, I had trouble with AVG and so I switched to Avast. But now I'm having problems with my internet working sporadically. I have a Belkin USB network adapter hooked up to the compuetr in my family room. The modem/router is in the kitchen. It worked great on my XP computer, but not with this Vista one. Works good for about 30 mins, then I get nothing unless I restart my computer.
So, I've been trying different things. I've discovered that when it stops working, it will work again if I stop both Avast and Zone Alarm. Doesn't work with just stopping one, but with both. Then I turn them back on, internet works for a while, stops, turn them off, works again.
So, are there any other really good programs that I can use?

Hi,I know it has been asked many times before but you anyone recommend current free versions of Anti-Virus and Firewall software, either as a combined package like Norton Internet Security or as seperate pieces of software that work well together?I've been using Norton Internet Security for a number of years now and although happy with how it works and it's performance it does bug me on how resource hungry it is. One of my PC's is still running Win98se which also means I can't even use the lastest version of Norton anyway. So just to recap I'm after Free (preferably) Anti-Virus and Firewall software that has a good track record, is not resource hungry and will work on both a Window 98se and Windows Home XP. BTW these two machine are networked together and the Win98 machine provides an internet connect for the XP machine in case this makes a difference? Thanks very much in advance for your suggestions. :)

The most problems that i find is with the info that cookies manage to send out.. as for the good old virus i can honestly say that i can blame that on Zone Labs. so i got me a virus checker and malware or cookie killer.all i can say is that you get nothing for nutin in this world. so do yourself a favor and spring for the few bucks, this i can honestly tell you, my internet provider supplies the big MAC for free and yet i prefer zone alarm.

Hello, I had an account here under justagirl82 but I can't remember my login and my old email account was closed when I changed ISP's so I had no way to get my login info. So, I registered again.

Anyhow, to my question. What combination of free firewall/anti-virus/anti-spyware/anti-malware programs have you found to be most successful for protection without slowing your computer down too much?

I was using Zone Alarm & Avast for a very long time, but have been experimenting recently.

Just looking for opionions.

TIA

Answer:Looking for opinions on free firewall & anti-virus programs.

Since our main focus in this forum is really malware removal and protection, we really cannot answer your question exactly since we are not really testing all combinations. Also how programs affect performance can be directly related to your PC specs. In particular how fast the process is, why type of processor, how much RAM, and what version of Windows you are running.

So I still suggest that you post in the Software Forum for more discussion on this but I will say the new versions of ZoneAlarm will slow you down much more than in the past. AVG8 is also more resource hungry than older versions of AVG.

Answer:best FREE firewall, anti virus & ANY other protection needed

For a person who does not need the detail of a 3d-party firewall...the XP/Windows firewall does the job. There is no best firewall, but some create fewer problems than others on systems. There is no best AV program...a number of them work quite well. IMO, the weakness with AV programs...lies in the fact that users don't necessarily keep them updated, which can make them ineffective against any recent version of malware or any form of malware which is more recent than the AV definitions installed.BC has a forum I believe that you should visit, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/25/antivirus-firewall-and-privacy-products-and-protection-methods/. There may be others but this seems to focus on the type of info you want to know.Louis

The windows firewall only operates in one direction. It does not monitor outgoing traffic. You need (free) Zone Alarm. I'm trying to purchase a refurbished IBM laptop, which is I guess older than what can handle the latest kind of anti-virus software download requirements.

I found Vcatch with 1.9MB for a free anti-virus download and Primedius Firewall Lite (again Free download here at MajorGeeks) with 654KB. Now, that seems to be a fairly low amount of memory needed, but as the laptop is old (IBM THINKPAD 760) I'm wondering how it will affect download time on the net, or is this not a factor? I don't need to store much else on this laptop, other than the basic WIN98 and WORD97(?) that comes already installed on it, so the downloading of the security programs are my primary concern.

The guys I keep talking to at the website offering this are trying to get me to buy something more expensive, but I don't know if they are giving me the runaround about how the low 32MB memory will make it hard to find and download anti-virus and firewall software progams.

Forgive me, as I'm really new at all of this, but I have little money, which is why if I can get this laptop and find a way to make it safe, I need to act as quickly as possible before it's gone.

I'd appreciated any advice you can give on this
Thank you, Maggie

Answer:Anti-Virus/Firewall Software for 32MB memory?

My first suggestion would be to find out how much ram it can take.
If you could add ram, it wouldn't be too expensive and it could
make a huge difference on what you can run on the notebook.

Answer:Best anti-virus software that's free and not a memory hog?

If you're happy with AVG, are you sure it's being discontinued? I can't find any news about that, but support for version 7.5 is being discontinued, it seems - version 8.0 is current. There was a spate of concern about AVG being discontinued in 2006 too, when support for an old version ended. Seems that they should make their alerts clearer.

This has been kicked around here for a while and there is even a pinned topic. However, that one is 3 yrs. old. The perimeters I seek are that it must have a pro version, be user-friendly and have been used by no less than five of of the administrators, moderators and advisers here on bleeping computer. I would say more, but that number may be too high. This means that those who reply can't be selling their product. I want the 'known' experts to be able to convey their expertise without having to deal with the rhetoric that usually accompanies this topic. Also, this should be updated on a continuous basis. That is because the things we're trying to protect ourselves from are continuous and persistent.

So, that said, the forum is yours! Please discuss it amongst yourselves and share with us, the unaware, unknowing, and the one's listening, your list of software that would protect us.

I shall call you the Knights of the Software Table.

Recently bought a Lenovo Ideapad 100 with Windows 10.

It came with McAfee pre-installed.

Yesterday the unmentionable happened. Miscreants in foreign parts attacked my computer, and then tried to ransom it back.

Right now I am doing a factory reset.

Question is: What is best combination of protections to use on Windows 10 to prevent this from happening again? Ad-Aware, AVG, Avast?

[After I uninstall McAfee, of course.]

I would prefer something that is FREE!

What do you recommend?

as the thread title mentions, looking for some solid free 'Anti- Virus/Malware/Spyware' software.

it's for my brother's family PC which i've just finished building. not looking for perfect cover, just something that's 'fire & forget' or enough to keep 'em out of trouble so they're not calling me every few months to fix their machine. i know a single piece of software isn't going to do the job (tho consolidation would be nice) however ideally should run automatically in the background with little user input.

I'm not sure how true this is, but would this be a good combination of programs to protect my system without conflicting with each other. What about Microsoft Security Essentials Free Edition (but I don't think I can run it with McAfee since it will conflict)? I used to run Avira Anti-Vir Free edition, until I switched internet providers and got McAfee for free. I did notice with McAfee that my system did use more resources, meaning I hear my CPU fan running a little higher than usual, but other than that, no issues.

Any suggestions as to which software combination I should keep on my system and which ones I should remove?

Windows 7 64 bit Home Edition (i3)

Answer:BEST Free ANTI-Virus/spyware/ malware combo?

If you're remaining with freebies:
Avast, Avira, etc antivirus will work for you [don't forget to not-install and/or disable un-wanted/un-needed modules].
SUPERAntispyware, SpywareBlaster, Spybot version 1.62, along with the others you mentioned will be ok.
I removed MSE from my laptops 'cause it wasn't needed.
Comodo Firewall [ditto on un-necessary modules] will work fine.
Windows 7's Firewall is really good! Comodo Firewall is not needed unless you want a "backup firewall" lurking unused.

I'm more and more going with pay-fors because I have better setup, configuration, settings, tweakings with pay-fors. Note: the data files for detection and alerting [and for many - removal] are the same for free and fee.

Looking for a good piece of software that will keep viruses, worms, malware, and spyware off my desktop PC (which is running Windows 10 free upgrade) and comes with a registry cleaner, firewall, and is simple to use.

There are many programs around that fit the bill except, I would not look for and use a registry cleaner. They are not necessary!

Hello,

I'm an IT consultant for several small to medium-sized business.  I've mostly use Avast and Malwarebytes for my Anti-virus and Malware protection.  For the small offices it's easy to manage, but for bigger offices, keeping track of anti-virus expiration dates is ridiculous (since it will be different based on when they get a new computer) and this week it was proven that I can't rely on the staff to let me know when a registration is expiring.  One of the computers was infected with CryptoLocker because he ignored the 30-day daily reminders of Avast expiring.  Fortunately, I was able to minimize the data lost to 4 hours to 12 hours by using Shadow Copies and the previous nights backup for the database applications that got encrypted.  Please note, they also host their own exchange server (SBS 2011/Exchange 2010 or SBS 2008/Exchange 2007)

So, with that preface, I need a good business management solution that provides virus, malware, phishing, spam, web-content filtering and blocking of potentially harmful sites.  For one of the offices, I do have a Barracuda Anti-Virus/Spam firewall, but this is only for email not web-content filtering.

I am considering the following:

BitDefender Small Office Security
Untangle NG Firewall - would order the hardware from them
Dell SonicWall solution - debating between NSA or TZ series for the medium-sized businesses.

I also really like the Barracuda devices, ... Read more

Looks like a fairly good test, unfortunately it's on an XP box. Do you know if they plan on running one on a Vista system, since the way that many malware works will affect it's viability on Vista systems?

Thanx for the link! Still lots of good info there for our members.

Hi all!

What do you think I should use as a second opinion scanner?

Until now I use ESET + MBAM. I never used EMSISOFT but I always hear good things about it

Answer:EMSISOFT Anti-Malware free or MBAM Free as a second opinion scanner

Why not both using MBAM and Emsisoft Emergency Kit? On demand scanners should help you to track down potential infections as possible with various tools available.

Emsisoft AM is a full blown AV but it can be experimental on other security products as combination just use at your own risk as possible.

Hello everyone!

My McAfee subscription through Dell runs out on Sunday May 23, 2010. I would like to know what are the best Free Anti-Malware, Anti-Spyware, and Firewalls out there. I looked at the list that is on here, but could not figure out which one is better for my situation.

I currently have as Anti-Malware and Anti-Spyware : a-Squared free, Spybot S&D free, MBAM free, and SUPERAntiSpyware free. I have Windows Defender and Firewall turned off because of interfering with McAfee.

I currently do not have the money to renew my subcription with McAfee, nor do I have the money to buy a paid full service security program with firewall.

My question is what do you recommend I should do and what programs are best for my situation?
PS: I was thinking of Microsoft Security Essentials, for 2 reasons: 1) It's Free and 2) my computer already has a lot of Microsoft programs on it. Has anyone had any experience with this program?

Answer:which are the Best Free Anti-Malware and Anti-Spyware

Groffeaston,

I installed MSE on my sisters W7 computer and she thinks it is great did that about 2 months ago when it was new. If you use MSE it wlii turn off Windows Defender because it includes it own spyware component. Use the Windows firewall with it cause from what I have read on MS sites it doesn't play well with third party firewalls. When you go to uninstall the McAfee makes sure to use there removal tool to get as many traces as possible otherwise you may have a problem installing MSE.

Good Luck Mr. Phelps this message will self destruct in 5 seconds!

Hi,
I'm not too PC-literate, but the way I see it,my Win XP Home has its own firewall, and my free AVG 9 is anti-virus/anti-spyware, so I'm fully covered aren't I, or do I really need to install extra programs?

Answer:so I need another firewall and anti-virus/anti spyware progs?

No malware program is 100% effective. That's why it's a good idea to go with a layered protection strategy. In addition to your AVG anti-virus, it's a good idea to occasionally run 1, or 2, online scans.Don't install a second Anti-virus, as this could potentially cause problems, which may render both programs ineffective.Check out Post #1, of our Freeware Replacements For Common Commercial Apps topic, for a list of some of the available online scanners. As far as malware is concerned, installing Malwarebytes' (mbam), and/or SUPERAntiSpyware, and running them as on-demand scanners, should pretty well cover your bases. As stated above, no program is 100% effective, and shouldn't be a substitution for safe surfing habits.

I don't know the Difference b/w Anti-Malware & Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware.

Is ESET a Anti-Malware.

How the Users are able to Know that this antivirus can be used as Companion with any av (like CIS + EAM)

Answer:What is Difference b/w Anti-Malware & Anti-Virus & Anti-Spyware

long time ago, in ancient ages, where computer were barely able to reach 333Mghz , they were a distinction between Virus, malwares and spywares.

Virus is a specific term that includes items that modify your files then replicate itself and jump to another computer.

Spywares were mostly items that silently collect datas and transmit them to someone; they include cookies, trojans, adwares, monitoring tools, etc...

Malwares is a most generalist term that includes all forms of malicious items such as viruses, worms , trojans horses, rootkits, spywares, etc...

at that time security softwares were design to protect only some of these categories, for example , i had to use Avast (very basic at that time , with an interface that looks like a music player ^^) alongside Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware (both specialized against spywares)

now these terms are obsoletes since any antiviruses/malwares are similar by detecting and cleaning all of them.

Hi,

I have had Avast Free anti-virus for a long time. At some point, after an automatic upgrade, all my messages in Outlook 2003 got an added anti-spam toolbar from Avast. I don't want it.

I did not find any way to make it go away from inside Outlook. It does not appear as an add-on in the relevant places. At some point, there was a register-based solution that was floating around on the Web. It worked with a previous version of Avast, but not with the current one.

I uninstalled Avast (with the proprietary uninstall tool, in safe mode) and reinstalled it twice. At some point, the anti-spam appeared as a separate module, so naturally I refused installation / deactivated it / uninstalled it (don't remember which). Yet it's impossible to make the toolbar go away.

If I de-activate or uninstall the mail shield module, the anti-spam toolbar goes away, but I don't want that. I want Avast to scan my mail, of course.

Now that I have nixed it somehow, the anti-spam component does not show anymore in the Settings / Components panel, not even in order to be re-activated. I don't know if this is a bug or a feature. It happens with other Avast components that I have refused, or uninstalled, and which do not appear anymore in the options panel as an option available for re-activation.

The anti-spam, illogically, is not part of the mail shield component, and no relevant settings appear in the mail shield settings.

A request in the Avast forum did not bring any helpful answers.

Thanks... Read more

I did a Panda activescan online and it came with 40 different spyware infected files and one virus I think, but when I ran a full scan on Windows defender it found nothing. Basically I want to get rid of defender and find a good anti-virus and anti-spyware program that's free. It can be an online scan but preferrably works from the computer.

Hello. I am working on a friends machine that seems to have a nasty infection. This machine is a dedicated server running Windows Server 2003 Web. Everything I am doing to it is via remote desktop which is making it a little more of a challenge. Web browsing on the server was incredibly slow when he asked me to take a look at it. I figured he was infected with something so I was going to try and install a few things on it and run a few scans, only to find that all of the sites that I found to use are blocked or disable by whatever is infecting the server. Any attempt to access an anti-virus or anti-malware website results in a message stating server cannot be found. Any other website can be accessed though.

There is an FTP server running on this machine, so I do have that availability to FTP to the server to get any file or program to it that I need to. Please just let me know what you need from me and I will get it up here as soon as I can. I am a fairly experienced user and can grasp things pretty easily. Thanks for your time, I greatly appreciate it.

When I try to run a scan from usind AVG anti-virus, Avira, Windows Defender, or SuperAntiSpyware; when the scan gets to a certain point, Windows shuts computer down with a blue window. It says Kernel_Stack_ Inpage_ Error plus some standard verbage about if you recently installed sortware/hardware,see administrator, etc. At bottom it says: STOP: 0x00000077 (0x00000001, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0xF79B1D24). I could sometimes run AVG scan in "select drives/folders" mode but recently it quit allowing that after I upgrade to AVG 9 (free). I uninstalled AVG and went to Avira but with same results. Scanning with Windows defender did the same. I recently installed and ran SuperAntiSpyware and was able to pinpoint problem to " System Volume Information" directory. I am unable to open to see contents as Windows shows no files in it. When I ask Ariva to scan it, Ariva says no files also but if I use AntiSpyware to scan, it shows many files during it's scan but will get to a certain point and computer will shut down. Hi, all!

With interest I have read the Emsisoft Blog article about free anti-virus vendors that bundle PUPs with them. Here, 7 out of 8 tested free antivirus suites bundle with PUPs. A bit further down the article, an important fact is stated, and I quote:

...Bitdefender Free is one of the only clean antivirus vendors that does not come with any PUPs.

I therefore would like to know: Which more free anti-virus suites than Bitdefender Free do not bundle PUPs?

Thank you very much in advance!

Well, Emsisoft Anti-Malware offers a 30 days trial of their program and doesn't bundle PUPs. Emsisoft doesn't bundle any PUPs at all in fact.

I am having an issue with, what I believe is, the google redirect virus or whatever it may be called now. It all started last week when I was working on my accounting homework for school and was working between Microsoft Word 2007 and various websites in IE9 (running Windows 7). I was working on my homework when suddenly all of the windows closed without warning (internet, word, and windows explorer) and my computer restarted. When Windows reloaded, my desktop background had changed to solid black and half of my desktop icons went missing. The more I did to try to fix it, the worse it got and the more icons disappeared. I found a thread on this forum that described the fix and followed it step by step. I downloaded and ran Malwarebytes, the unhide program (i dont recall the proper name but the icon is a white briefcase with a red cross on it), and another program that I renamed to iexplore.com per the instructions. I was able to restore the desktop icons and full functionality of the computer after doing that process. Although I was never able to run TDSSKiller (even with the disguised version) or Kapersky...couldn't even install them.

Now I am living with the issue of the redirected search links. I can get to Google (or any other search engine) and search normally, but when I click the link that I want, it will take me to some other random website having nothing to do with my search (for example, i search for Bleeping Computer and click the link for www.bleepin... Basically, you could have your system completely locked down with lots of extra security, but in some cases it becomes a hassle because of how much your computer becomes protected and overly secured. If you prefer a speedy computer over security, generally you use less security software, but if it is the other way around, you will want beefier security software which may slow things down slightly. That link I've provided will have most everything you will need.

Hi all. I've been searching for a free anti-virus/anti-spyware combo that actually has real-time protection (AVG Anti-Spyware free doesn't - and this is crucial), but can't find anything. Is there a good solution for this? So far, I've only found real-time protection in the pay versions of everything.

I'm working on a video for the net, and am trying to find something to recommend, that preferably doesn't involve having to run 2 different programs.

Thanks.

Answer:best free Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware?

I use Avira. I think it has the best detection rate among free AV progs. It works well and is light on resources. One negative is that it has nag pop-ups whenever it does definition update. It can get annoying, but I've learned to live with it.

HelloDoes anybody on this forum actually use any that they have purchased or just always use the free versions.I have always wondered what exactly the purchased versions offer or find that the free versions do not, and if so could someone tell me please what is the best in their opinion of both of the above.Thank you

Answer:free or purchased anti-spy anti-virus

I run a mail out list of over 90 users of AVG free. I have used paid for Norton (too invasive and too much of a resource hog...slows down less powerful computers) and paid for MacAfee (OK but still invasive). I never use a firewall and just have AVG and MS Antispy + a bit of common sense. Result = no viruses, trojans or worms. The other 90 people on the list have never had a problem. Make of this what you will.click hereG

Have been happily using Avast anti-virus for some time now but today I was advised that my 'subscription has expired' and that I need to renew. Unfortunately it would seem free protection is no longer available as when I click on the 'Renew now' button I'm directed to Avast site to renew for 39.99 (after 10 'loyalty' discount). Redownloading the free version gives me a message 'there was an error changing the product configuration' when I try to install it.
Can anyone advise if this is in fact the case (ie that I'm not doing anything incredibly stupid)? If it's not longer free, what do people currently recommend for free protection?

Hello,

I have a problem that is far beyond my limited skills. One of our people has a laptop that has either malware or a virus infecting it. Two symptoms are present: first, when using firefox web pages get redirected to advertising or to unrelated google searches; second, the machine seems more sluggish than usual.

I have tried to download anti-spyware software (e.g. Spy Sweeper, CounterSpy, MalwareBytes, Superantispyware, PC Doctor) and nothing works. In some cases such as Counterspy and PC Doctor, the executable will run but the program will not update (and thus, not allow for a scan). In other cases such as MalwareBytes, the executable simply will not run.

I have run a Trend Micro anti-virus scan. It seems to detect something but it crashes before the scan can complete. The same thing happens with Panda Activescan. Last night, I ran Panda Activescan for over 8 hours. When I woke up, the scan had frozen at the 52% point and had found 1 infected file, which it didn't appear to clean up.

Anyway, I'd really appreciate any help.
Best regards,
Jordan

Running Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3, MSI Motherboard, 512MB Ram, Pentium 4 - 2.4GHz CPU.I used to have Spybot, but after some point whenever I tried to run it the computer would reset. Now, I've gotten a few messages from Windows Defender that there is a trojan on the computer. I can run a quick scan and remove what shows up, but when I try to run a full scan, the computer resets. I try to scan the computer with McAfee anti-virus, I can run a quick scan no problems, but when I try to run a full scan, the computer resets. I know there is at least 1 trojan/virus, but any program I try to run to get rid of the problem makes the computer reset. My subscription for Macafee ran out and I never got around to downloading AVG or some other antivirus freeware on my netbook. I experienced some obvious signs of a virus/malware not long after (I would do a google search on Chrome and would get redirected to some very odd sites when I clicked on something safe-looking). So I attempted to download AVG and others with no luck. I then restored my system to an earlier date hoping this would be good enough to remove whatever virus/malware was affecting it. No such luck as I am still unable to download said freeware (although now I am able to surf the net with no issues). So, I happened across your lovely website and am crossing my fingers that you may be able to save the day!

Good morning everyone,
Frequent visitor, first time poster of this forum. I want to thank anyone in advance for committing any amount of time to my problem. I'm hoping someone has some experience with this issue. Allow me to explain:

Yesterday, I woke-up my computer and opened up my browser (I use Google Chrome). As soon as I clicked to open the browser, I noticed a Windows Explorer Pop-up. I have attached a picture of what this box looks like, but to describe it for those who are not able to open the attachment: The windows header said "Mod Info" and the Content said "BC LOADED" the only available options for me to click were "OK" or the "Close" button at the top right. Without clicking anything the box then disappeared and Google Chrome opened as usual. This behavior was unexpected, I've never seen this before. Worrying I had some kind of Spyware or Malware, I decided to try running my AV program. I use Avast Free.

I went to look for the process in the hidden icons list on my taskbar, where it usually resides. I didn't see it there, which was concerning. I tried running the program from the start menu, but after clicking it, nothing opened. This was also a red flag that something must be wrong. So I decided to try and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. This program would also not open when prompted.

I decided to scan google for my symptoms to look for recommended fixes. Several tech support forums suggested to those who presented simil... Read more

11/25/2014 After viewing facebook videos all computer any normal split second minimal activity takes minutes.
Even in safe mode any activity in windows explorer is crippled.
Opening any folder Task Manager can take several minutes.
Internet access is unavailable, so I am submitting everything from non-infected Windows 8 machine.
All system restore points are gone.

Ran the who's who of malware utilities.
MalwareBytes, MalwareBytesAntiRootKit, RogueKiller, rkill, AdwCleaner, HitmanPro_64, tdsskiller
Full system scan with McAfee.
All of above scans are clean.
FRST_64 also ran to provide log files.

Answer:Infection undetected by malware anti-virus anti-rootkit software

A little more background:
I did not observe any obvious malicious or unexpected process entries in Task Manager.
dllhost.exe *32 appears intermittently when starting/stopping programs.
This is never more than a single instance, shows very little CPU or memory usage,
but does have path of C:\Windows\SysWOW64\dllhost.exe

AdwCleaner did identify and delete C:\ProgramData\apn

There was also something called Au_.exe leftover related to "DropBox" application.
I uninstalled "DropBox" and manually deleted Au_.exe file

Answer:Anti-virus, antispyware,anti-malware, hijack this! should i remove some of them?

There is excellent support here on TechSpot for major infestations.
In the meantime, if you need free software, I would download Avira Antivir, SuperAntiSpyware, MalwareBytes, and the free Microsoft Security Essentials. Run full scans with each. If they find evil infestations, remove them, then reboot and rerun the scans one more time.

What is everyones preference for business/corporate deployed anti-virus/anti-malware? I've used the following products, all the most recent versions available of the corporate/business/enteprise product: Symantec, Trend, McAfee, ESET NOD32. I've alo used Sophos, but that was about 3 years ago. Also used Webroot Spysweeper in terms of a dedicated anti-malware product.

A few that I'm interested in knowing some more about are Kaspersky and VIPRE Enterprise. Anyone have experience with them in the centrally controlled corporate environment?

I want to learn more about Kaspersky especially as their engines are used in a lot of products which take multi-engine approach, and their windows client has the basic stuff (anti-virus/anti-malware/e-mail protection) plus some things that are not in cetain other clients (desktop firewall, and web protection).

Also looking for other recommendations.

Hi

I just bought my first ever smartphone (yes, I've been living under a rock) - the iphone 5s. I'm after recommendations for good software to protect it, free if possible.

I've looked in the itunes store and the options for anti-virus seem limited. The Mcafee app gets bad reviews and the others I've never heard of, and/or have no reviews. any suggestions would be great.

On the anti-malware front, i can't seem to find anything in itunes store when i try to search. I like the Malwarebytes anti-Malware program for my laptop, but unless I'm mistaken the only mobile app they have is for Androids, not iphones. Again, any recommendations would be much appreciated.

The reason they have more anti-virus apps for Android is because the Android platform is more vulnerable to malware. On Android, you are able to download and install a variety of things from unknown sources.

For the iPhone, however, anti-virus isn't really needed unless you have jailbroken your device.

Hope this helped.

As many of you know(quite a few don't) what EICAR is, this is a open poll to see what programs pick it up and what programs fail the basic tests.

I am conducting this poll because A-Squared failed to see this on a scan, but MSE picked it up before it could be downloaded.
So after you take the poll, Post what you used to test it with and results.

Hi all!

Nowadays, we all have real-time running anti-virus, anti-malware and anti-exploit/anti-ransomware for maximum computer security, as well as backup- and disk imaging software, along with Windows Firewall.

And of course common sense and following Best Practices for Safe Computing.

It is also equally important to use add-ons in your web browser like i.e. WebOfTrust, µBlock Origin and Ghostery for additional security.

However, no installed security tools will provide 100% continous protection, even with a multi-layered security solution. There is always a chance that some malware can bypass everything.

Nevertheless, that is where standalone anti-malware tools can help detect and remove whatever malware could remain on your system.

And hence, my question is as follows;

Do you supplement your Anti-Virus with standalone Anti-Malware tools?

Thank you very much in advance!

Regards,

Hi and new to the forum . I currently have Norton Security, MBAM Pro, CCLeaner Professional, adwcleaner, and I did have Hitman Pro, for a while several years ago when my computer was hacked.

I have had Norton for several years, but I am thinking of switching to Emsisoft and use my Windows 7 Firewall. I use MBAM for live monitoring along with the Norton Security..The adwcleare software I use periodically, or if there is an issue the other programs don't handle. For example when out bound traffic was blocked by MBAM, but it was continously happening, the adwcleaner software found and eliminated the culprit. It was very useful also when my computer was hacked.  I also have the active monitoring turned off on CCleaner.

Would also adding Binisoft or Tinnywall add more security to the Windows 7 Firewall, or would it be better to just use the Windows Firewall by itself? I don't really want anything too complicated on the Firewall settings, but just maybe make a few teaks, possibly.  One other thing, would it be good to add WinPatrol Pro?

Sorry for a lot of questions, and thanks for any responses as I value your opinions.

Answer:Is This a Good Anti-Malware and Anti-Virus Protection Program?

Although Norton (Symantec) is as good as any other well known anti-virus program, it it requires numerous services and running processes that consume a lot of system resources and often results in complaints of high CPU usage. Anti-virus software components insert themselves deep into the operating systems core where they install kernel mode drivers that load at boot-up and create files/folders/registry entries in various locations. Further, there have been numerous complaints about lack of sufficient support from the vendor.I have read from other users that Norton has made improvements in newer versions of their software so they are not as resource heavy as past versions...while others still say differently. Those issues plus the cost factor are the primary reason many folks look for a free alternative. IMO, Norton (Symantec) is better utilized in an Enterprise system environment protecting many client computers. With that said, there are a lot of folks who prefer using Norton (especially if it came preinstalled) and there is nothing wrong with staying with a product you are satisfied with.Switching to Emsisoft and using Windows 7 Firewall is a wise choice.5 Reasons Why the Windows Firewall is one of the Best FirewallsWindows Firewall: Your System’s Best DefenseEmsisoft Anti-Malware is an effective alternative to consider.
