Explorer Fails To Load On Start-Up (Sometimes)

Question: Explorer Fails To Load On Start-Up (Sometimes)

Every so often, maybe weeks apart, when I start up my B machine (PC with XP), it doesn't load and execute Windoze Explorer. Re-booting (manually) doesn't fix it.

So, I use Alt, Ctrl, Delete to bring up the Task List and I click on the Applications Tab, key in Explorer and click Run.

Explorer comes up, I have my usual desk top and everything seems to run OK.

I do a normal Turn Off every night and the next morning, odds are that Windoze (along with Explorer) will load and execute.

Then seemingly out of the blue, one day it doesn't load and execute Explorer and I have to manually (via the Task List) get it to execute Explorer so I can use the machine.

Two questions.

1. Why does it do that?
2. Is there any change I can make to prevent it in the future?

Thanks,

Preferred Solution: Explorer Fails To Load On Start-Up (Sometimes)

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Explorer Fails To Load On Start-Up (Sometimes)

Kelly's Korner says this

Control/Alt/Delete - When the Windows Task Manager dialog box appears, select the File menu and then New Task (Run). When the Create New Task dialog box appears, type in Explorer and press the OK button. Windows Explorer should restart complete with the Start button.Click to expand...

It's similar to what you are doing but maybe it will correct the problem for good.

Following an update from Kodak Easy Print, my Explorer starts to load: brings up the Goggle home page, and then disconnects. Tried rebooting and restarting and still no full boot.
Should I begin by removing all of the Kodak application?
I feel like I should be able to find a process in the Task Manager that is conflicting with Explorer.
Since I am on the other computer writing this, I cannot give you any pictures of my system, unless you have suggestions on how to do that. I do have a network with three other computers available with Explorer working.

Thanks.

i'm screwed if I don't fix this by monday.

windows starts up fine and everything is dandy, until I login. Right around the loading user settings part of the login, i get a nice little popup window that says: "The Instruction at '0x7c80ac9b' referenced memory at '0x80040119'. The memory could not be 'read'. Ok to terminate. Cancel to debug" So i hit cancel to debug and nothing is fixed. I can still use cnt-alt-delete to see all my other programs running. All except the most important one. I can see my desktop picture, but that is it. and my mouse.

worst is, this isn't my computer and if it's messup up on monday i'm screwed! help!

btw: safe mode does not help.. the same thing happens. If this helps, I just installed service pack 2 right before I rebooted and found out this is happening. so that might have something to do with it.. How do I access my restore points? and if that doesn't work, what other options could i try? is there a way to fix windows by booting something on a cd?

Answer:HELP! explorer.exe fails to load after I login

Try when you push ctrl alt delete, click file, new task, type cmd and click enter. In the command prompt box type sfc /scannow and let it do its thing, then restart.

Also, before you get to the xp loading screen at startup, press f8 repeatedly and select restore to last known good configuration.

You can also use your xp disk to repair windows. I have never done it before so im not sure how to get to it though...

The computer then stops at this point (although the the curser still moves and I can cntr-alt-del to shut down). The same happens every time i reboot now, even on safe boot. Can anyone help please?

Answer:desktop fails to load on start up

I'm assuming that you are running Windows XP.Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to bring up Task Manager. On the File Menu select New Task (Run...).Type in:C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exeand click OK.This should start System Restore and allow you to go back to before things went wrong.

Also are you saying this is a new user account? Or are you saying it is the same user account that you cleaned but you just added a password to it?

Hello I have XP pro on my computer. My computer reset itself. And now it wont restart.

Everytime I try to restart I get this message that windows did not start properly and I should select from 4 options
- safe mode
- safe mode with networking
- safe mode with command
- last known setting
- start normally

I tried all the options but nothing seems to work. It just goes back to this same screen again. Please help. I have tons of very valuable information on my computer.

Everything was fine. Next time pc was started it did the boot process and then a DOS screen appeared telling me that Windows did not start successfully and on lower part of screen it gives you 4 choices to start in safe mode and one choice to start at the last known configuration that worked. None of these choices come up. The computer just keeps restarting and then the screen comes up about Windows not starting successfully.

Thank you.

I wouldn't necessarily suspect the hard drive just yet. A repair/reinstall might be your best bet; since it crashed on an application installation, you may have some necessary files in limbo. Check this link for a comprehensive guide:

Hi,

Yesterday I cleaned up some old folders I no longer use. Now Explorer no longer fully loads, as this 70 second video shows

Windows Explorer not fully loading anymore - YouTube

Explorer gets stuck here:
The left-side menus can NOT be expanded

Thank you for any help!

PS

OS: Windows 7 32 bit
*I deleted music, photo albums, and some old downloads. I may have accidentally deleted something else though.

Answer:Did a file cleanup; now Explorer fails to load correctly

How or what did you use to clean things with?

Did you create a restore point before you started?

Have you tried a system restore to a point in time before you cleaned your folders?

Chances are you've messed up Windows 7's junction points.

You could try restoring your user folders, as explained in this tutorial.

User Folders - Restore Default Location

If ever you do want extra drive space it's best just to delete the contents of your user folders rather than the folders themselves.

Your library structure is, if you will, a junction point for any folders in the library, regardless of where they are on your computer.

Once you break the links you experience problems such as yours.

Hey guys.

I'm new here, and hopefully I can get my question answered.

This is the first time this problem has ever occured, and I'm not a computer-sage so please bear with me and try to understand my dumbed-down post.

Ok, let's begin.

Since yesterday, when ever I try to open up another window of Internet Explorer a problem comes along... (whip it good eh? lol).

Here's the problem:

-Internet homepages, in seperate tabs (I have 3, and always have had 3) -1st tab fail to loads to load but continues to do so
-2nd tab goes to "Cannot display this page" (yadda yadda yadda, type deal)
-3rd has the same ordeal as the 2nd tab

Now... what's weird is. I am using the internet right now. How? Because I didn't close the browser that was being used before this problem came along. So, I am clearly connected to the internet. The problem must lie with the initialization of Internet Explorer... right?

But, there is one thing I noticed, which may have or may not have been there before this incident... but it just not got noticed by myself:

-A black clock (Black circle with white hands reading roughyl 4:00 or 12:20 [If that is necessary]) appears in the bottom left hand corner of the browser (the hands do not move).

So, can someone please help me out here?

Thankyou so much in advance.

Answer:Black Clock - Internet Explorer fails to load

Good morning everyone,

I came across this forum while searching for help with a computer issue. I'm hoping you can help me!

Our sales director has a Dell Latitude E4300 laptop with Win XP Pro (I did all the updates before this problem occurred). It's brand new and he decided to use the program PC Locator to move everything from his old laptop to his new laptop. He says he did that, it said it did it successfully, but when he restarted the program right after using the program, the computer won't finish loading Windows Explorer.

It will get to the Welcome screen and you can choose your user, but after that, it will show the desktop background, but no icons or taskbar and gives the error that Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close.

Error messages:

http://i554.photobucket.com/albums/jj412/Ruatha24/201_0413.jpg

Can anyone help me figure out what is going on? Could he have transferred a virus or anything from his old laptop? He was prone to downloading everything under the sun, although he did have Vipre anti-virus on there and I installed Kapersky Anti-Virus on his new laptop BEFORE he copied everything over but it was FULL of junk.

I ran a standard diagnostic test as well and it came up with the following errors:

I have no idea where to go from here. Anyone have suggestions? (I'm a interm... Read more

During boot up I've got Windows Error Reporting with the following messages: "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close".
The report contained the following data:
Error signature_______
AppName. explorer.exe AppVer:6.0.2900.3156 ModName: ntdll.dll
ModVer: 5.1.2600.2180 Offset: 000181ea

After I click either "Send report error" or "Dont send", the computer Freezes and I have toshutdown the computer using ON/OFF sw.

Same result when starting the computer in Safe mode. I've never got a chance to go past the bootup stage so cuold not access Event viewer.

Hello SevenForums, long time lurker here.
I've had a issue with my windows 7 explorer's toolbar not displaying icons of all applications (.exe files).
I've tried to depict the issue in the images (a,b) below

(a)

(b)
The only instance wherein I see icons are when I click a file associated with the software,
For example, a .mp4 video associated with VLC media player shows the VLC icon in the toolbar properly

I've googled to fix this for a few months now, but I haven't managed to yet.
So now I turn to your expertise, please help

Answer:Windows Explorer's Toolbar Fails to load application Icons

Hi and welcome to SevenForums,
FWIW I get the same thing for .exe files I don't believe it's a real issue because .exe files execute and do their own thing meaning if the developer didn't make an icon for the operation it might show that icon instead of the actual icon it shows other places like in your image cpuz,
Rufus does this too for it's .exe that I just noticed.

Hello, Please help me!
2 days ago, my system started to be a little slower in start up. also my dial up ISP will not work, it says "failed connecting to server" or error 720 when logging in after dialing. now if you turn on the modem speaker, you dont hear the dialing tone.
anyway, i tried fixing that problem, and soon noticed that my IE was acting strange. It wont load yahoo. at the time i used firefox, and it can load yahoo, but some buttons like in email, reply, move, does not work on it.
IE now cant load yahoo at all, it use to load half way and then display "cannot display page" message.

i tried fixing the dial up problem (through ethernet, which was slow and inconsistant in its connection for whatever reason) and was told by tech service that i might have to reset the DUN and after that i can connect... but it was short lived for when i tried to fix IE with winsockfix, it revereted back to its problem, not to mention IE wasnt fixed at all.

i rebooted many times
i scanned for virus with norton, came up nothing, no new updates either
i checked for spyware with SBS&D, no results, no new updates.
i also ran into some fatal errors, and sometimes after startup, if some programs dont work right.. and some doesnt anymore.. ex. defrag no longer works right.. and scan disk take many trieds to get it to start on restart, and if you go to start >>> programs during after freeze or so, it shows "program" as empty.

A few weeks ago internet explorer started to act funny, sometime when I opened a new browser window it would freeze in the new window, but allowed me to continue using the previously opened windows. I had to open several new windows until suddenly one of them worked. Then, the whole browser started freezing at random times, specially when clickin on links or opening new windows or tabs. I was not able to close it and reopen, I had to kill the processes using task manager, and even then, many times it would freeze on the first window.I tried several antivirus (Trendmicro, AVG, FProt, Eset, Panda) some would report some infected files, others none. After disinfecting with Panda, the browser seemingly started working fine again, but it only lasted for less than a week. After that the problems became more annoying every day.The last straw was that sometimes when turning on the PC it would freeze right before loading the windows explorer, so I could only see the background of my screen. Usually I rebooted and it will work, but today I had to reboot about 5 times before it worked again.Any help will be greatly appreciated.Thanks. I have a dell inspiron 530. It started to run slowly so I used performance tool kit utility software on the system. Now when I go to start the computer, it loads the desktop picture & the curser only. No desktop icons appear. When I do a ctrl/alt/del... task manager appears & I click shutdown. Then an "end Program" -explorer.exe message appears. After 3-5 minutes, the system will finally shut down. I have tried to do a system restore to a point I created before I installed the utility program. This didn't work and I still get the same outcome. If I select restart from Task Manager, for a split second the desktop icons appear right before the system starts the shut down sequence...Any ideas?

I was on my laptop the other night and all of a sudden its battery died, I had nothing but my documents open and everything closed much like computers do when their batteries are completely empty.
Just some information to start:
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium
Computer: Dell Inspiron 1525
Antivirus: I just use Malwarebytes
Anyway I plugged it in and powered it up but then all of a sudden it got stuck, whether I'm in the Vista safe-mode or not Windows reaches the point where I have entered my password and it brings up the "Welcome" menu screen, as if it is ready for my desktop to flash up soon, however instead it freezes, and after 2 minutes a black screen appears with nothing but my documents.
I have clicked "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" and from what I can see, the process "Windows Explorer" is not even running, I have attached an image of my current processes. Anyway it seems the computer is running perfectly other than the Explorer.
I can successfully open files such as Safari now, and access the internet but in general I have to work from my documents, I have also attached an image of my desktop which appears as a black screen, if I minimize a window such as this then it appears right at the bottom of the desktop as a short bar.

Anyway I have backed up all my files but I really want to avoid resetting my laptop to try cure this disease, I would like some advice please on what to do. Feel free to ask me anything else about the current... Read more

Topic title explains it all, for some reason, explorer.exe fails to start even when I try to do it through task manager. An error just pops up saying, "explorer.exe - Unable To Locate Component 'This application has failed to start because (square symbol).dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.'"

This is all after I used windows update (this is a fairly old/backup computer, other good one is in for repairs). I was on the "Windows SP2" update, it kinda failed to do anything towards the end, and it canceled. Related?

Answer:Explorer.exe fails to start even through task manager

I've never known SP2 to cancel itself...no error message?

Every time i try opening up Firefox (latest version, 3.6), nothing happens. The only signs that something has changed is that task manager shows crashreporter.exe and drwtsn32.exe. After a couple seconds, those processes will then both disappear from task manager.

Internet Explorer shows a similar problem, but the actual browser will appear for about half a second before closing itself.

Checking for some possible solutions, other people have recommended reinstalls, renaming the firefox.exe application, and installing older versions, none of which have worked for me. I've also scanned using Ad-aware and Housecall, cleared temp folders, and tried system restore just in case it was something I installed/downloaded recently but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I?ve been fighting this issue for 2 weeks. Can not say anything in particular caused it, had not installed anything major or new, just one day when I re-started the machine the entire desktop was gone. No icons, taskbar, start menu, etc. Also, rt. click on the desktop does nothing. Windows File Explorer does not work either

Machine ? Dell Inspiron E1705, 4GB Ram, 25GB free HDD space, Win XP Pro SP3

What Works? Task Mgr, File Explorer alternative (Free Commander). Am able to execute pgms. and apps using these. Essentially it seems that all else works except for explorer.exe and assoc. features.

Other symptoms, things I?ve tried, etc:

1. Tried executing explorer.exe but fails, doesn?t start.
2. In safe mode, everything works! Desktop, Start Menu, File Explorer, etc.
3. Desktop folders for all users exist with shortcuts
4. Replaced explorer.exe from a another XP SP3 machine, did not fix the problem.
5. Ran sfc.exe (full file check and auto-repair) in safe mode shortly after it first occurred, rebooted and fixed the problem for a while, but then after a couple restarts it failed again. Ran sfc.exe again but this time no joy.
6. Ran several malware scans (MBAM, MSE, SAS) nothing major found.
7. Also uninstalled MSE and installed a trial Bit Defender. Ran full scan, said it found and deleted 5 files but for the life of me couldn?t get a log or anything to come up so I could see WHAT the 5 files were. Also gave me a false positive for PaleMoon.exe and auto dele... Read more

Not cause by virus .. this just started today. I tried a restore point of yesterday .. nothing. I have tried several suggestions from the web but nothing seems to do it? I know it would be better if i could name them but can't remember the exact commands .. will look for the page again. One dealt with sfc /newscan (or such).

Really need to get this working again .. any ideas or pointers?

Worked once but problem came back and wouldn't work the second time?

Tried the .bat file from AveYo's suggestion, lost my wifi connection and couldn't restart it, had to revert to a previous restore point.

Anyone know a fix for this?

Thanks

Here is the list of the problems in order of which I noticed things going awry:

1. My Firefox browser will re-direct my google searches to a new Firefox window pop-up with "google-analytics" in its address bar, but would never finish loading the new popped-up window. Firefox would also re-direct and never finish loading my google searches by opening a new tab with a "directdlr.com/....." in its address bar.

2. Microsoft Office 2010 applications don't open, instead a "DW20.exe" and a "DWWin.exe" replicates itself an infinite number of times in my processes, maxing out my CPU.

3. My anti-virus applications (Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Security Essentials, avast!, malwarebytes) won't update, and therefore won't run or scan. Firefox also won't load various anti-virus sites, such as this message board.

4. Other applications crash directly upon opening them (VLC Media Player)

Solutions that I've tried:

1. Resetting my router. I'd read somewhere online that doing this would solve the problem. It did not.

2. Trying to restore from a restore point. I opened System Restore, but the restore points were all very recent and within the timeframe of infection.

3. Un-installing Microsoft Office 2010 and re-installing. System won't let me un-install.

Here are my scan reports:

Not long ago (a week and a half or so) I was playing Payday 2 and my computer froze, I turned off my computer to restart it and could not load my computer past a pre-loading windows black screen where the mouse was not showing. I then tried booting my computer in various ways (safe, with and without networking etc) and they worked, however I believe one of my drivers failing to load was the reason for my "Windows Normal" startup to fail. I eventually decided through, I then looked at using the system restore point function in order to hope for some success. The system restore function when I restored to; a week ago, two weeks ago, did not seem too alleviate my issue much, it did however allow me to load windows but almost immediately after using the machine for 2-5 minutes I would have a frozen screen again. I then eventually decided to just factory reset the machine out of desperation, the factory reset eventually happened successfully and I was able to load windows and login into my new user successfully, as I learnt that I had to reinstall my graphical drivers I then attempted to put in various CD's in in order to install these drivers, eventually when I figured out the order of CD's that I needed to install for my games to load properly, I then resumed my activities on my pc (such as gaming, browsing etc).

Flash forward to the second factory reset, this one happened due to a very similar freezing problem yet again, and again I decided to turn off my computer ... Read more

Answer:Explorer.exe wont load at start up

Try doing this, Open windows explorer > click tools > Folder options > view tab > uncheck the box next to launch folder windows in a seperate process and then restart. If it is already unchecked then check it first, restart, and then uncheck it and restart. I've encountered this problem before and this was how it got fixed.

Slow booting.  Really slow booting.  Seems that using an SD card for ReadyBoot/ReadyBoost is causing the issue.  But why?
On investigation, this only started happening back in November, which coincides with the install of KB2685813 UMDF 1.11 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2685813).
Could be a bit buggy....

I'll uninstall the update and see if this solves the issue.

Hmm.  Now that is interesting.
In my System event log I was getting an NTFS error (57: Failed to flush tlog).  I didn't think it was from my HDD, so using diskpart, I ran a 'CLEAN ALL' on my SD card, then recreated the FS as exFAT (previously it was NTFS).
Seems to be working now, although I'm getting VDS Basic Provider errors (Unexpected failure.  Error code:
[email protected]) "which can be safely ignored" (re: KB979391).
This begs the question: if it can be safely ignored, why is it raised in the first place?
Boot time is also restored to an acceptable timescale.

Hi,I have bad news for you From your log, I can see it is a lost case - game over situation already. It's clearly here that you are dealing with a File infector, and I'm pretty sure it's Virut, this on top of the other nasty malware you are dealing with. A format and reinstall is the fastest and especially the safest solution. You may want to read this why:Virut and other File infectors - Throwing in the Towel? So, I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc.. Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.Read here for instructions how to format and reinstall Windows: http://web.mit.edu/ist/products/winxp/adva...all-format.html

Hello,
I have the following problem: When I click on the Internet Explorer icon on my desktop, the application doesn't start at all. I have tried from its directory with the same result. I have tried the 64bit version and the no add-ons version as well, same result. On the other hand, Chrome works perfectly.... Any ideas?

Answer:Internet Explorer wont open, load, work or start

Check if shortcut is defective. Delete it, recreate a new one and try. You say it wont open even when you click on its .exe file in its Program Directory? That's strange!
Try the following:
1] Try to open Internet Explorer in No Addons mode and see if it works. If it does, maybe some add-on is interfering. Try to identify it and then disable or remove it.
2] Re-register ExplorerFrame.dll file. How do do it? Here: Unregister or Register DLL or OCX files in Windows 8 | 7
3] Run System File Checker: System File Checker: Run sfc /scannow in Windows 7 | 8
4] Open Run Internet Explorer Performance troubleshooter. Open Run box, type the following and hit Enter: %systemroot%\system32\msdt.exe -id IEBrowseWebDiagnostic
5] Re-register ALL the concerned dll and ocx files and see if it helps. You may use Fix IE.

So, earlier today, everything was fine. My computer was working normally nothing was acting up. While unplugging my laptop from the wall I dropped it, but nothing appeared to be wrong. A little while later I restarted my computer and it worked fine for about a minute and then everything froze in windows explorer, nothing would work, folders wont open task manager never appears start menu wont come up, nothing.
I booted into safe mode and everything works fine through there, so I looked around online and one suggestion was to update my BIOS so I tried to update from Dells Inspiron 1420 A08 to the newer A10 BIOS version, trying that in safe mode failed so I tried to boot normally and quickly do whatever it told me, when I tried it wouldnt restart (and still refuses too, I have to shut it down manually outside of safe mode) it said it couldnt update the BIOS version because it couldnt locate the image, but I downloaded it directly from Dells own website.
So then I tried to do a system restore, and I got the message:

The disk Vista (c:) has errors
Windows detected file system corruption on Vista (c:)
You must check the disk for errors before it can be restored.

So I clicked scan and fix, and nothing happens. (this is back in safe mode by the way) so I opened a command promp and typed sfc /scannow
and it scanned and found some errors but were unable to fix them. Details are located in the CBS.log
So I opened the log and I found the following:

Hi, the first rule if you ever drop a laptop (and it appears OK) is to take the battery out, boot from the mains if all is OK turn off add battery and reboot. Now you may have damaged the MB and or the RAM seating or HDD cable connection as well as the monitor connect cable.. etc ...etc. You can see where this is heading to the shop would be my advice.

I am using Intel i3-530 on Intel DH55TC Motherboard. The motherboard supports RAM with highest frequency of 1333MHz. However, I was told that using a higher speed RAM wouldn't hurt the system. So, today I bought a Corsair Vengeance 4GB 1600MHz RAM. The RAM is detected in BIOS, but OSes fail to boot after that. Even Ubuntu throws Kernel panic error while booting. Could anyone help me with the BIOS settings required to run this memory stick?

Answer:OS fails to load when using new RAM

Hello Mycroft mate as a general rule running a higher frequency RAM stick in a machine that runs that only supports the lower one the frequency will revert to the frequency of the new stick will be maxed to what frequency your machine will support. So I think whoever told you could run a higher frequency RAM stick in the machine should have known better and to get you to check out the supported RAM speed before you went out and got the new RAM.
If possible I would get the supplier to change it for 1333 (there really isn't much to be gained from 1600) and the extra RAM will still make a difference to your machine simply because the system has more to use and therefore less bottle knecking - in other words the CPU can load more faster if it has more empty RAM available.

ie Tip a bucket of water through a 1 inch outlet funnel into another bucket and it fills quite nicely in say 5 minutes - now take a funnel with a 10 inch outlet and the second bucket fills in no time at all - the first bucket is the CPU and the second bucket the RAM the difference being there is more channels for the data to flow through even though it might be the slower speed RAM

You can see from this Intel? Desktop Board DH55TC the board only supports 1333 max - you can install a faster RAM stick but why bother?

So for example the 1600 you have put in should only run at 1333 if the machine specs say max 1333. The other problem could be that the new RAM stick is bad.

To see about RAM this might gi... Read more

Im having this issue when I go to my Music folder/library in windows there is either no album art (in this case no icons in place of the album art either to suggest if its an mp3 or what not), or it takes a really long time for the album art to load on every peace of music. I have also tried to search on google about this problem. No luck probably because I'm rubbish at searching

ill really appreciate it if someone can help me out.

Here is a screen shot about what I'm on about ---->

I just recently gave my computer I had to my 15 year old sister. Iv'e had this system for four years and this has never happened to me before. The day after I gave it to her, she told me that it would not load. It gets all the way to the windows XP loading screen with the small green dots moving at the bottom then the dots just stop moving. The hard drive light is still lit up like its doing something but after an hour or so of leaving it on like that it was still frozen. I was able to load it up in safe mode and remove any adware/spyware on it and get a hijack this log. I'm not sure what it is she does on it but in all the time iv'e had the machine its never done this before.

I'm trying to fix a Lenovo 3000 N200 Model 0769 with a pentium dual core processor, a WD 160Gb #WD1600BEVS-08RS hard drive, and 2Gb RAM running Windows XP sp3 Home.  Could not find the restore CD, but have a copy of the OS on CD.A few months ago, the system crashed while I was using the computer and would begin this endless loop of trying to restart windows and then failing.  I suspected a failing HD, so I tried to put the drive into an external enclosure and plug it into my desktop PC.  It was not seeing the drive, so I bought a tested one (same model) from the internet.  Later, I was successful in bringing the OS back up again and immediately began copying files to a backup drive.  Every so often, while copying image and video files, the OS would crash again and I'd restart successfully. I suspected corrupt files or bad HD sectors.  Eventually, it quit loading Windows altogether.  I received the purchased replacement drive, however, when I plugged it into the laptop, it didn't seem to find it and I guessed that it had not been formatted yet.I took it into work where we publish a software database and plugged it into the Windows 7's mother board SATA plug and successfully detected and formatted the new drive.  I also plugged in the "failing" drive, which it detected  and ran a scan on it, automatically detecting and fixing any bad sectors.  It seemed to complete successfully and when I plugged th... Hello:

Let me begin by stating that I will donate $100 to Tech Support Guy if someone is able to *successfully* solve my problem.

First, some general info on my computer:
* Dell Latitude D510 Notebook (purcahsed in January of 2006)
* Windows XP Home - SP2
* 2GB RAM
* 80GB 5400RPM HDD
* Pentium M Dothan, 1.86GHZ, 2 MEGB

Second, a little background on the events leading to the problem:
* I'm a heavy Internet user (about 16 hours per day of blogging, social media stuff, web based email, downloading music, files, video, etc.). Typically, I leave my computer continually running for several days at a time. Last week (Jan 08), I rebooted my system after about 3 days of continual use and this is what happened, and is still happening (step by step guide)

1) I turn on my computer and the computer begins to boot normally, from the Dell logo to the Windows XP logo
2) Once the Blue Welcome Screen appears, I see the following error message:
WLKeeper.exe - Application Error The Instruction at "0x00401490" referenced memory at "0x9a3412be". The memory could not be "written".
3) If I click cancel, the OS continues to load, even producing Microsoft's trademark startup sound and displaying the default background screen of the fields and mountains against a blue sky.
4) However, as the programs are loading and the explorer bar at the bottom of the screen loads, I receive a second error message stating:

Answer:Windows xp fails to load

Huh?

Okay first, what is the exact spelling of the file it is failing to load, and what is the exact text of the error message? At what point in the installation process does this happen.

One reason installs fail is because the CD is scratched, dirty, etc... Sometimes making a copy of a damaged disk will work. The copying process "fixes" the bad data before it gets burned to the new disk.

Also, a bad optical drive will mis-read and corrupt data during an install. Changing out the optical drive might fix the problem.

Hello. I have Red Hat Linux and Windows XP on different partitions on my Dell. I went to login to Windows the other day, and after I selected Windows it gave me a black screen saying windows failed to load. It had options of starting in safe mode, starting from last known configuration or starting normally. Regardless of what you press, the Windows XP screen comes up like its loading, then after a few second it goes to a blue screen saying unmountable_boot_volume. It says to remove any hardware that I recently added, but I haven't added anything. My sister had been using the computer while I was gone, and I don't know what to do now. Any ideas? Thanks.

My copy of Flight Sim loaded OK under Win XP but under Win 7 in same machine doesn't. Other software loads as it should but the Flight Sim DVD just spins, with the read light and the HD light flickering away indefinitely. I have tried manually via two set-up files I can see in Explorer but to no avail. The DVD looks OK physically. Anyone suggest what else I can try.

Answer:Flight Sim X fails to load

Not sure if this is your problem, but it could well be. FSX can only be used on one machine, it checks its self with Microsoft. A new OS may be giving the wrong info. In which case you might need to contact Microsoft by phone. You may find more info at the following forums:- click here click hereI used to use FS9 but found my machine would not cope with FSX, so gave up on it. When I buy another PC then I might try again.FSXs programming was too far ahead of hardware capabilities at the time.

Answer:Windows Xp Fails To Load.

I have this issue every once and a while as well and can't seem to figure the problem out.
My issue is a little different though, my PC will lock up, and when I restart it'll load Windows, and then just go to a black screen like you described.
If I let it sit for 10-15 minutes it'll BSOD and restart and work fine though.
Have you tried letting it sit?

For the last 2 days I cannot get my Youtube channel to load properly. It seems to stick on something called "s.ytimg.com". Is anyone else having this trouble at the moment?

As 67 people have looked at this but not one has replied, even to tell me that I'm an idiot, I feel rather ignored on what is my first outing on this forum. Perhaps my question is too banal.

Anyway, in the hope of receiving some sort of response here's a more detailed description of the problem:

I use Firefox with Noscript and Ad Block Plus.

I have a 3 mobile broadband connection (which has worked well enough since I got it) and before Friday I had no problems with Youtube.

When I try to load my channel on Youtube everything zips along nicely until it comes to "transferring data from s.ytimg.com". Then it just hangs. And Hangs. I have left it for 40 minutes or so and nothing has moved.

If I selectively disable "ytimg.com" in Noscript everything loads but there is no video to play.

Evidently s.ytimg.com is a perennial nuisance because it is mentioned in many other forums. Solutions suggested include putting extra lines in the hosts file (tried it. No good). Removing lines from the host file (couldn't because the line was not there) and changing DNS server.

Does anyone here have any new wheeze to suggest?

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, I am new here.

In fact, perhaps there should be a section just for s.ytimg.com and its attendant miseries.... Read more

I have a very odd problem at the moment. As of recently my desktop fails to load anything except the wallpaper on any user.

Background:
I've recently acquired a Trojan.Vundo.H and have been attempting to get rid of it. I found it with Malwarebytes anti Mal-ware. I've attempted numerous times at deleting the files in both safe mode and regular mode, but the virus still comes back.

I then attempted to locate the files manually. There was a single .dll file and then three registry entries (I would post then but I'm in the middle of a full scan on my computer that is infect so I shall do so when that is finished). In either mode and using cmd all were unable to be deleted. I then ran a virus scan using Avira and it found the .dll file but was unable to delete it. After a system restart I went to check to see if the file was still there and it was. However to my surprise, Avira detected the infected .dll file and was able to remove it. I then rebooted my machine and noticed the .dll was gone but that still left the three registry entries. I began to scan with Malwarebytes anti Mal-ware and it said the .dll was still there, although after manually looking for the file I could not locate it.

So then I began to attempt to delete the three registry entries. I tried going in safe mode, editing the permissions, anything I could find online to do, but nothing worked. I then backed up the registry and set a system restore and then ran ccleaner.

After the restart is whe... Read more

My formerly cool computer continues to tick me off! I've been having a hardware problem, which I've traced to the video card slot, and am currently troubleshooting. The problem will cause my computer to completely fail to start - BIOS codes and all that. Working on it though, this isn't my question.

An unrelated problem has cropped up, though, perhaps related to problems I posted earlier...

Usually (but not always) after reboot, I'll get an error that msgina.dll failed to load. It suggests copying over a new one. I've done that, and it still fails to load on the first cold boot, but loads on reboot.

Anybody here seen this before, and can offer suggestions?

(on a side note, what do you use - besides an eraser - to clean the contacts on your AGP or PCI boards?)

Answer:msgina.dll fails to load

The file has something to do with Winlogon. Look HERE for some info on this. Also, a search of MSGINA on GOOGLE provided a wealth of info on why you are having your problem.

To clean contacts, I use Ethanol obtainable from a electronics shop, maybe Radio Shack It's the oils from your hands etc etc that can cause contacts to erode.

WIN 7 X 64 fails when trying to load MS updates. I see lots of users have the same problem and have tried many of the suggestions that I found on the forum. I have Malwarebytes and MS essentials installed.

Security updates for MS.NET are successful as are Definitions for MSE, the Bing Bar updates and even updates for Office 2010 (even though it is not loaded on my computer) but none of the Security Updates for Win7 x64 based systems will load. Every bootup for weeks it says ? you have 37-40 updates? If I tell it not to update, sometimes, somehow, it does it any way and in the middle of my word processing a box pops up that is counting down to a reboot. If I don?t walk away it just shuts down in the middle of my typing.

If I ignore the ?updates available? it changes my log off box from ?shut down? to ?load updates and shut down?. If I don?t pay close attention and change the default back to ?shut down? each time I get stuck loading all the same updates that didn?t load the day before. Dirty pool.

Of course if I tell it to load updates it will finish and then wants to shut down. During shut down it spends a very long time loading ?definitions?? Then when I reboot it spends even longer trying to load updates. I must walk away. This ties my computer up for a very long time and then always has to run ?start up repair? to get the PC to boot after loading updates. I walk away again. Hi, Everyone,
How are you? I have been running Windows XP, Service Pack 2 on my computer for several years now. Last night, my computer froze for the first time in over half a year, so I restarted it and nothing seemed to be wrong. After about 15 minutes of using it, it froze once again. After restarting it the second time, however, it showed me the screen that says I could choose to restart in the "Last Known Good Configuration," in "Safe Mode, or to "Start Windows Normally."

If I chose the non-Safe Mode options, it would start to load Windows (with the Windows XP screen and the blue bar running under it), and then restart itself when the blue bar runs for the third time. For the Safe Mode options, it would load partway and then restart again.

Can I do something to fix this? Is this a hard drive problem? I tried unplugging everything except for my monitor and hard drive, but the problem was still there. Please help! I am using a library computer to type this and will wait until I can find a resolution, then go home and try it.

Thank you in advance!

Ill try to make a long story short. Bought a Dell Precision 470 that was two years old from my ex boss. I ran the computer the whole time and it never once gave me a single problem. Upon receiving the computer i found that he ran a few registry deleting programs and because i know he doesn't know how to do anything i feared he did something wrong.

I in turn decided to format the computer. I am running a RAID 1 set-up (mirror) on two 250GB drives. I format the raid array first and rebuild the array then install OS which involves obviously formatting the hard drive and then install drivers reboot then what software pleases me.

The software i run is pretty basic, office 2003, illustrator, photoshop, itunes, mozilla, norton and a software and driver for my business which happens to be sign making. Now the only software thats different on there is the signmaking stuff. We use to run a Prog called signlab and now i use something else. apart from that the general use of the computer is about the same as it was the two years previous.

Every 4-6 weeks the computer decides to stop loading. Always after being shut down normal and properly. It will get to the Windows preloader screen where the three boxes just sit there and slide back and forth over and over essentially until i turn the box off. I can't for the life of me figure this out. the hard drive and information is completely in tact, what seems to be missing is the os software. for the longest time i was not able to g... Read more

I had this window pop up whenever I shut down my computer.

dwwin.exe fails to load because Windows is shuttng down.

Something like that, heh. Now what can I do with this?

Answer:dwwin.exe fails to load??

As an initial step,go into msconfig/Start up and uncheck everything except the Firewall/AV.

If the error stops, then one of those start up programs is the cause.

If that doesn`t work -

See Norms posts here - HERE

"Had this problem, here is what I did:

Open regedit, go to:
HKLM_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_WINDOWS_CURRENT VERSION_RUN

If you have a logitech input device, or a Gravis gamepad input device, you need to
modify the value of the registry key so that the application starts up in *belownormal*
processor priority.

Example:
start /belownormal c:\windows\system32\Grxp4exe.exe /init

"start /belownormal" is the addition you will make to the beginning of the line..."

You`ll have to read the thread to find the exact keys you need.

Hello again - this place worked last time so I thought I would try again... here is my problem:I use a computer designed for a visually impaired person. The PC (running XP Professional) automatically loads JAWS For Windows (a program (JFW) which 'reads' what is going on (web pages, Word documents, keystrokes) so she can tell what is happening) which appears to run normally. HOWEVER when OPENBOOK (a Text scanning/'reading' program) is loaded, I get errors regarding SSILEXE.EXE not being able to load, which is a speech synthesizer designed to coordinate bothw JFW and OPENBOOK so they can 'talk' without both talking at once. I followed Freedom Scientific's directions (they are the makers of both these programs) to re-expand the AUTOEXEC.NT, CONFIG.NT and COMMAND.COM files from the Windos master disk to the C:\windows\system32\ directory, but the problem keeps coming back. (The only other error message I remember is something about not being able to "load a 16-bit program" or something like that.)Things I have noticed: a Sheild (looks like a MS Update shield) which says 'Downloading Updates 0%' (but I don't think it's really doing that) that pops up when I start Windows, JAWS runs fine, but trying to open OPEN BOOK takes a LONG time to load (and I get the error message about the speech synthesizer not being able to load) - if I try to load OPENBOOK while Norton Protection Center is checking the system this REALLY bogs down. I am wondering if runnning Nort... Read more

Answer:XP FAILS TO INITIALISE ON 1ST LOAD

Start the computer. The computer begins processing a set of instructions known as the Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). What is displayed depends on the BIOS manufacturer. Some computers display a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS, while others may not display any indication that this process is happening. As soon as the BIOS has finished loading, begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Continue to do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears. NOTE: If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers will generate a "keyboard error" message. Please restart and try again. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, scroll to and select create boot log. Then Start Normally...after the boot fails follow the advice above and choose Safe Mode Have a look at th bootlog.txt file on the C drive the final entries are nomally the fail. If so try going into Services and disable whatever is causing the problem...and/or any services you dont need. click here

Hi, Everyone,
How are you? I have been running Windows XP, Service Pack 2 on my computer for several years now. Hi,

I've got a problem and wonder if someone could help me out...

Windows XP Pro SP2 was working fine until I rebooted and now the desktop won't load. All the programs are accesable from the task manager>new task and I have run a AVG scan with no results. The screen picture loads, but nothing else. No start bar, no office toolbar, no icons, no anything.

I've scanned the forum for an answer and there was one result for desktop failing to load, but this did not seem applicable.

I am getting no error messages.

I just came home for christmas and my parents showed me that their computer is failing to boot.

It posts normally, runs the windows splash screen, and then comes up to a black screen with a mouse cursor and hourglass, then 30 seconds later to just a mouse cursor - it can sit for an hour and never loads anything else. In safe mode, any type, it does the same thing but with the version number across the top and 'safe mode' in each corner.

In any mode there is no taskbar and no response from the start button, right clicking or ctrl+alt+del

I have tried, after making a backup of course, replacing explorer.exe and taskman.exe as well as the entire system and system32 folders(except config in system32 which is protected). I have loaded the hard drive in my own computer and it does the same thing. I ran scandisk on it while it was in my windows pc and it didn't tell me anything. The drive is divided into 3 partitions and I only scanned the C drive.

This is my parents computer and I do not have a hardware listing, it is relatively new but not high end, I can look for model numbers on anything that is relevant.

I have slaved the drive into another computer and backed up any data, I am just trying to avoid a full reformat and having to reinstall all the software.

any thoughts?

I have been trying to pinpoint this problem for a little shy of a week now. I have a custom built desktop which was running windows 7 Ultimate when it started to have troubles shutting down and booting up. It would fail to shut down and the windows start up would either get stuck for awhile(on the screen that is showing the logo) or it would not start up at all. Hoping that it would solve the problem I reinstalled windows and am now running windows 7 Professional but the problem is still not fixed, It still gets stuck on the start up Just wondering if anyone could help me find the cause of this problem as it is very frustrating. My computer specs are: EVGA 123-YW-E175-A1 LGA 775 NVIDIA nForce 750i SLI FTW ATX Intel Motherboard, Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield 2.4GHz LGA 775 Quad-Core Processor, EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+ Graphics card, Rosewill RX630-S-B 630W PFC.

Any help would be great. To add, it will also not start in safe mode and the cd/dvd drive does not always read discs, this leads me to believe it is a motherboard problem.

Just installed Win 10.

Now Eudora 7 fails immediately with error message

I have no idea what this means or where to begin with this.

This despite Win 10 crowing upon completion of installation that "all your files are exactly where you left them."

Answer:Eudora 7 fails to load in Win10

I did a little research into this and found this possible fix:

"Thanks. You answer put me onto the correct answer:Copy all of the Eudora files from C:/Program Files/Qualcomm/Eudora to c:/users/sales/appdata/roaming/qualcomm\eudora. Then edit the registry HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > Qualcomm > Eudora > CommandLine and replace C:\Program Files\Qualcomm\Eudora\Eudora.exe with c:\users\sales\appdata\roaming\qualcomm\eudora\Eudora.exeI may not have my slashing tilted the right way but you get the idea."

I have to question why you want to use software that hasn't been updated for 6 years though. Could potentially have security risks.

Last night I had to shut down my computer through the power button, as the computer had froze (due to me routinely overloading it, not restarting it for several hours, etc). This is very normal, but when I turned the computer on today, it took an abnormally long time to boot up.

When I entered my user password it spent a full two minutes loading my settings, then sent me to a blank desktop window. There are no errors that appear, I cannot use the little windows key on my keyboard to bring up programs, and the only way I can access anything is through ctrl+alt+delete.

What went wrong? What can I do?

Thanks in advance.

hello my computer currently running windows 7 has all of a sudden started giving me this error: WINDOWS ERROR RECOVERY - windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. If windows files have been damaged or configured incorrectly, startup repair can help diagnose and fix the problem. if power was interrupted during startup, choose Start windows normally. from here, i am presented with 2 choices: Launch Startup repair (recommended) and Start windows normally. choice 1 attempts to load windows files, and then returns me to current screen. choice 2 restarts computer and boots to the current screen. i have tried running my windows 7 installation disc, i get the "press any key, etc" prompt and follow it, but after it tries to load files, i am presented with the following: WINDOWS BOOT MANAGER - windows failed to start. a recent hardware or software change might be the cause. to fix the problem: 1. insert your windows installation disc and restart your computer. 2. choose your language settings, and then click "next". 3. click "repair your computer". if you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance. Answer:Solved: Windows 7 fails to load

Please provide us with the computer specs including model and make. Go ahead and turn off the computer and unplug it from the wall and remove any hardware or USB devices that you might have added to it and by that I mean USB thumbdrives, printer, etc. Let's have this PC only have the essential parts (mouse/kb/onboard graphics card) attached to it so we can quickly and effectively resolve the issue. Now, with the computer unplugged from the wall, press on the power button and release after 5 seconds. Now plug it in and turn on the computer. What happens now? Please do not try anything else at this point but simply report back to me and I will provide you with the next steps.

http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/5395/5395nv.shtml
This description is fairly long. I went into as much detail as possible because this problem just came out of nowhere.

So I get on the computer one day and everything is cool. I rearrange some music, uninstall some software that I never use and surf the web. While I was adding several hundred music files to my iTunes I ran into an error that said I didnít have access to write to the C drive. iTunes stopped importing the music halfway through at this point. I selected all my music again and tried once more, this time it worked fine. This happened a few times before I was able to get all my music in. Iím thinking that this may have something to do with my boot problems since I had never experienced this error ever before. Itís probably the only peculiar thing that happened prior to my problem so I mentioned it.

Lastly I run disc clean up and Spybot: Search & Destroy. I updated my AVG AntiVirus and avast! and restart after it asks me to. I am then confronted with this crap.

Irregardless of the way I turn the computer off, it boots back up with the screen that informs me that Windows did not load properly. And naturally it gives me 30 some odd seconds to decide if I want to start the computer normally or in a variety of safe modes. Choosing to start the computer normally or letting the time run out results in the screen flickering for a brief second... Read more

Alright I have read so many threads and posts trying to figure this one out.
I have AoK and it runs fine.
I have AoC and I can rarely get it to load. The only time it loads is if sometimes I load AoK first then immediately load AoC.
I have played around with every possibility on the compatibility mode and resolution and I still get the same result. AoK does not need to use the compatibility mode at all.

When I go to load AoC I receive,
"Age of Empires II Expansion has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available."

It does not notify me. It works on my laptop which has windows 8.1
I have reinstalled both AoK and AoC many times clean.
I have tried both minimal and maximum on installing the game.

Please Help!

Thank you,

BJ
