Best (free!) tool to view folder size and sort folders in size order

Question: Best (free!) tool to view folder size and sort folders in size order

I have a 500Gb NAS drive which I've nearly filled and need to clear out.
I'd like to be able to just look down the (400+?) folders and see their size, and sort the folders in size order so I can find and attack the largest first.
Windows doesn't seem to have a way of showing the folder size in list form (rather than hovering over each one in turn) or sorting them (largest to smallest).
I've just had a quick look on this site for a (free) utility which does this, and found ExplorerXP (but can't download and check for a few hours).
Is this the best (free) tool for this job, or can anyone recommend another?

(For info, I've also seen something called FolderSize, but it isn't hosted here and the page on Sourceforge suggested it slows the machine and crashes every once in a while, so I've ruled that out)

Many thanks.

Preferred Solution: Best (free!) tool to view folder size and sort folders in size order

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi Forum! I've been on Windows 7 for a week. One difference I've noticed between 7 and Vista is I can't see any way to sort files in a folder (say, video, jpegs, or documents) by size. They are all automatically sorted by name. Is there a way to do this I just haven't found yet?

Thanks,

If you click the size tab it sorts by size, but then you probably know that.

This seemed like a customization thing... I tried searching but in the first three pages of results I didn't find anything that related to what I was looking for. That's all my disclaimers.

So I want to be able to sort a list of folders by their size, preferably with freeware of course. Is this possible? Is it crazy? I realize that I can hover a mouse and view the size of individual folders but I'm culling a music directory with over 15,000 artist folders in it and I want to see which ones have massive discographies and which ones contain just a few songs. Repetitive and menial tasks like hovering 15000 times is the reason we made automated computers Is there any way in Win 8 to do this or do I have to wait for the software to catch up?

250 GB disc keeps coming up as almost full. I chop out what seems like a lot of stuff and in a week I am right back to "disc space critical." I keep suspecting there is something really huge and useless in there but don't know how to find it. So how (in Win 7) do I view all the files on the drive by size?

HiCan any body tell me how to organize my folders in order of size? When I open my disc drive I can see all my folders, but I cannot organize them in order of size. When I right click, I get 4 options: name, size, type, and modified. But when I click on size, nothing happens. A similar thing happens  when I look at my disc through Total Commander. Individual archives are sorted by size, but the folders, which contain lots of archives and are all different sizes, are only sorted by name. This is extra annoying because I may want to find the last folder of archives that I downloaded, and I cant just click sort by date, because they are only sorted by name. Or even more annoying when I want to back up my disc, but don't want to back up video folders, which are really big. Therefore it would be great if I could just click sort by size and easily see where they are and remove them. Can any one advise me on how to sort this out? Or even suggest some freeware to do it for me?thanks for your timeKwisjXP Home Edition SP3

I'm sure most of you are familiar with the "change your view" option in Windows 7. It gives the folders, apps, and program shortcuts, (or icons) in a certain folder a larger view size. Using this "change your view" option in the top right hand corner of the explorer when you select a folder, you have the option to change the view of all the icon in that folder to Extra Large, Large, List View, Details, Tiles, Content, etc. Currently when I change this to Large in one folder, any other folder I go to remains in the default "details" view. What I am looking for is a way to change the way ALL folders look. Is there a way in control panel I can set this for all folders, or do I have to manually change the view for each folder I want changed. Thanks in advance for the information guys. Cheers!

Answer:Is there any way to change the view size of all folders?

Hi-

First open a folder and set the view that you would like default, then, in the tools menu, select "folder options". Go to the "view" tab and click "apply to folders" then select "yes" in the pop-up.

Hello, my system is XP SP3, updates.

In the desktop I have some folders - drive partitions, my documents. All these folders are the same size (quite possibly windows default) and show details view.

There are also 3 tools folders - different sizes, icon view.

For a long time, all was fine.

Recently, for reasons unknown to me, the tools folders randomly reset to the size of the drive folders and to details view. I reconfigure them, and some time later (not related to a reboot) they reset.
The drives folders are OK. CHKDSK is OK.

Otherwise, the PC seems fine.

Thanks for your help,

Hello, I want what's inside the external hard drive, to look the same no matter the pc it's plugged into.
So, I found how to change Folder Icons permanently from another thread,..
Now, what remains is changing the folder view, or else the icons won't be clear, so is that even possible?
PS. I know it's kinda OCD ..

Answer:External Hard Drive, Permanent Folder View (Folder Icon Size)

I did some research , and found that it was possible on windows xp via the "desktop.ini" through "FolderType=string" (eg: pictures, videos), but it seems it's impossible on windows 7.
The reason is that the " Show Common Tasks" in Folder options has been removed from windows 7.

I have Win XP SP2, all updated, Word 2002, SP3.

Choosing say A4 for page setup, setting it to 100% and viewing as Print layout, at 100% used to give a screen size page which was actually equal to A4 ie 21cm x 29.7cm.

For some time now, the screen size is now larger than that - the ruler at the top and bottom shows the marking as being 21cm x 29.7cm, but the cm units on the ruler are marked off at larger than cm units, consequently the screen size page is larger than actual.

This is annoying as it is not an accurate representation of the page layout for things on the page relative to each other.

Any ideas what has caused this and how to fix?

I want to delete this, but cant figure out how to view folder size in windows explorer without actually going in the folder. I want to be able to simply sort by folder size, and delete all folders with no files in them.

This must be possible...but I cant figure out how. Help?

i would like ot know if theres any faster way to view a size of folder contents in explorer.
instead of right clicking on each folder is there a program that will add this feature to explorer?
like file attributes or something

Answer:folder size view in explorer possible?

The view settings under the tools>folder options>view tab in any explorer window(not IE) will see the check box for "show pop-up description of folder and desktop items".

Once you are in the directory where the folder(s) is or are located go to the menu bar>view and select "details" from the list instead of "list" or small, medium, large icon and then simply hover the cursor over the intended folder to see the popup description appear.

This is all rather basic view settings going back to the 9x family of Windows. Jan's Files and Folders: Folder Tree

In my pictures folder, as well as all other folders that I have checked, the option to change the icon size larger or smaller is grayed out.

Solutions I have found use the options to change settings, however, my options are also grayed out so I can't.

Refer to my attachment for a view of my folders.

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

Answer:folders: icon size options are grayed out. view>small, med

my brother was over to my house today and I asked him about my folder icon size problem. I pulled up my folders, and they are fine. You know how that goes...show the problem off only to have it not be a problem... anyway, I hadn't done anything. I was baffled. Of course, telling him I am not crazy and that my sizing and the options were grayed out, but now were fine. My brother says it's because my system was performing a disc defragmenting. he says windows just schedules them and does them. I don't know anything about that or if that really was the case or not. I never did any updates and I had already restarted my computer a few times so I know it wasn't any other changes that were just taking effect.

Hopefully this information helps someone else out when they have this problem. I couldn't find my exact problem when it happened to me. Sorry I don't have more on how it was fixed.

I am trying to tidy up my hard drives and seem to have a lot of duplication, some intentionally as backups but others not. I had been using Ultra Explorer to do this as I could look at 2 or more drives at the same time in dual-pane view and it gave you folder sizes which Windows Explorer doesn't do. Unfortunately, when I viewed my music folder in Ultra Explorer it gives some strange results, saying there is no content in a folder when I know it is there and I can no longer trust it.

Please can anyone recommend software which shows the breakdown of files and folders and allows you to do this in dual-pane view. I have tried Folder View by MindGems but this doesn't seem to have a dual-pane view. I am running Vista.

Thanks for any help.

Answer:Show folder size and dual-pane view?

Try xplorer² - lite, I've used it for years and I really like it.

It has dual panes and to show sub-folder size hit Ctrl+D.

They also have a paid version, but the free one does everything I need.

When I backup to an external USB drive, Explorer shows the 2 folders created (WindowsImageBackup and MYNAME-PC) as having 0 bytes, 0 files and 0 folders when right clicking those folders and looking at Properties.
Yet, if I right click the drive icon, Properties shows the drive with 15GB of used space.
Is this normal? I'm not using third party software for the backup.

Answer:Can't view folder size on backup drive with Explorer

Yes it is normal. Windows Explorer does not go where it does not have permission to go.

Anybody can share how to increase the size of icons in the details view of folders? there are a couple of howto around but they don't work, any new solution you know?

Answer:Increase Icons Size in Folder Details View

You can change the icon size to pretty much any size you like using CtrlMouseWheelZoom.exe

It's an AutoHotKey script compiled as an executable and you can download it here:

How to assign browser-like zooming hotkeys for resizing icons on the Desktop and in the Explorer window in Windows 8.1 and Windows 8 | Winaero

In addition to the video shown in the above link here's another video (below) showing the script in action on my machine.

Folder is set to "General Items" and "Details View"

Icon size is remembered on a per folder basis (Folder Template Discovery is off). Not sure what happens if you've got Folder Template Discovery switched on.

Note: CtrlMouseWheelZoom.exe will run until you kill the process via task manager or other method.

In searching for a solution to making Windows Explorer show folder sizes, I've come across many threads here and elsewhere.

What I cannot find is which free third-party tools are most suitable for one who is somewhat technically challenged and gets confused with too many options.

I'm looking for a lightweight tool with relatively few bells and whistles that will display folder size in Windows Explorer.

I appreciate any suggestions- thank you.

Hi
Thank you for taking the time to read my query.
I just restored a bkf file and the restored folder is smaller than the original bkf file. I need to delete the bkf file which is 12 GB but don't want to until I am sure all the files were restored.
I would like to figure out which files were not restored.
Is there any way to figure out which files are missing. After I restored the files, the report says that hardlinks could not be transferred but does not the size of them. The bkf file size is 33,754,314 bytes larger than the restored file, but the bkf file "size on disk"is 19, 099,648 bytes smaller than the restored folder!!!
When I left click on the bkf file and select properties it does not tell me how many files are in the bkf file only the bytes.

Is there any freeware/program that will tell me the number of files in the bkf properties dialogue box? Or even better let me look at the size and number of files in the three main folders I backed up.? I can not access/explore the bkf file only restore it. That would solve my problem. My backup tree is C:sharedhardlinkdata>beth>documents and settings>beth> and then 3 folders underneath
Thank you

My 32GB Windows 10 Home PC (recently upgraded from 8.1) is low on disk space. I deleted Windows.old and I have hibernation disabled. Apart from a few browsers, very little else is installed, yet I only have 11.7GB left?

One reason may be the size of the Windows folder:
Size 14.7GB
Size on Disk 9.91GB

From my calculations, Windows appears to be using the higher figure in determining available disk space.

Why is 'Size' so much greater than 'Size on Disk', can I do anything about it? I have a similar 8.1 machine, it does not have this disparity (12.4GB and 12.3GB).

What would be a normal 'Size' for a Windows folder on Windows 10 Home PC very recently upgraded from 8.1 i.e. with few, if any Windows live updates run ?

Answer:Windows Folder Size greater than Size on Disk

I imagine its because windows compresses some system files currently it may be using 9gb but with all files uncompressed you may be looking at 14 which is why it uses the higher value

I went to SSDs on all of my computers some time back, but I still use WD RE4s and 2.5 inch WD Black HDDs for a variety of backup tasks and for storage in which the data will not be accessed for a period longer than is ideal to use a non-powered SSD for. On my Macs I am using El Capitan with OS X Journeled, GUID map, and FileVault 2 encryption. On my SP3 and desktop I am using NTFS with Win 10 64-bit Pro with BitLocker enabled on both machines. The OS and third party programs are currently up to date.

I've generally used ExFAT and the GPT partition map because it allows me to use it on all of my computers, and I have always used the default cluster size. However, I do not think the default size was the best decision for me because the size on disk is over TWICE the actual size.

If I am correct, the default Win 10 cluster size is 4k, and that going BELOW that is useful for the drives I have many smaller files on. Is this correct? Additionally, the smaller cluster size I go, the slower the drive will write, correct? Also, if so, how low do you advise going? I am still torn between reformatting outright or trying one of the programs that allows changes to a currently in-use drive. Any advice? Thanks!

Answer:Hard drive cluster size issues? Size on HDD over twice the actual size

For the a sector size of 4k to double your disk utilization you'd have to have a really tiny average file size. From your numbers shown the average size if I calculate it correct is 132kb (unless you have 1 massive file and 17,711 tiny ones) so a 4k size will make no difference.

You could check with TreeSize Free - it will tell you if you right click on the status bar and select it to be displayed.

EDIT - having checked the default for ExFat is 128k for drives over 32GB (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/140365) and when I tried to format an external USB drive that is what it picked. According to macbook - Reformat exFat with specific Device Block Size and Cluster Size - Ask Different OSX picks 128k also.

So if you had 128k as your cluster size minimum disk utilization would be 17,772 files * 128k = 2.17GB. So if all your files were just over this (say 132k which looks like your current average size) you would be using 4.44GB add a couple of big files and it could easily be 6GB.

I would check your average file sizes and also your current cluster size (you can use chkdsk as described in the AskDifferent link above).

The default is 4k for NTFS and I have always formatted ExFat as 4k also. Depending on your current setting reformatting 4k looks like a good idea.

As for how - copying the data elsewhere, formatting and then copying it back has to be the easiest, safest and most likely fastest way. You'll also get the disk defragmented automatical... Read more

In Windows Vista 64-Bit ULtimate you can see items by list, medium icons etc... and also sort if by date, total size and free space etc...

I keep on changing it to order it by Date Modified but everytime I close explorer and open explorer again it defaults back.
How do I make a system - encoded default view and sort order?

thanks

Answer:default view and sort order

Generally when dropping down to the "sort by" option in menu bar>view you simply check off the change there and see that again when re-opening any explorer window later. First you have to go into the tools>folder options>view tab there to check off "remember each folder's view settings".

Answer:Sort Order for folders

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable - This Tutorial disables Auto Arrange in all folders except Libraries, to allow free sorting.

When you disable Auto Arrange and either move or rename a folder, it will refresh Auto Arrange in that specific moved or renamed folder ONLY, after each time you move or rename it. Auto Arrange is still disabled for that moved or renamed folder, but you will have to arrange the files back to whatever non-auto arranged order you like after moving or renaming the folder.

In a newly installed Win XP sp3, or in an existing XP installation, I can change a folder view attributes, go to Tools -> Folder Options -> View tab and with "Remember each folder's settings" checked I can click on [Apply to All Folders] and [OK] that. Windows, after that will open any folder in the same attrib, say Details, and a given size, and it will remember its location. The big exception that is very annoying, when I create a new folder (and I am always creating a temp folders for special file moving/copying/separating operations) the new folder opens into the default size of 600x800. Yes if I can adjust the size, Windows will remember it, but this temp folder is deleted when I am done and the next new one opens with the default size again. What is more tiresome is that I move from computer to another several times a day in my work. I carry with me some basic files on a CD and on flash drive. Each time I open one of these, YES you guest it, Windows will open it in the default viewing size of 600x800 (irrelevant to display res). I have tried searching the web, ran into many people wanting the same, no one so far has any answer. Yes there TSR programs like Autosizer that will control a Class-size or individual size, but this mean installing this program, and configuring it, on every computer and taking away a piece of RAM.

Hi,

I have a folder with about 20 images and 20 folders (with avi's, images, and txt files inside).

When I initially check the disk size (while the folder is being viewed in Icons View), the disk size reads 28,415,404,695 bytes.

When I change it to Thumbnail View, the disk size increases to 28,415,444,631 bytes.

I know it's only a 39,936 byte difference but I'm just wondering where this is coming from? When I change it back to Icons View, it still reads 28,415,444,631 bytes. How do you get it back to the original 28,415,404,695 bytes?

Thanks

A user has created lots of personal folders. Some of these folders when selected are showing as 'There are no items to show in this view' even though at the bottom left of the screen it says that it contains eg. 30 items.

These folders are sorting by default to 'by flag' even though the user does not use flags. If he chooses to change the sort manually to 'by From date' or any other field, the messages then show as normal.

The user would like to set a default sort order for all existing and any newly created folders. Is this possible?

Thanks.

Question: ram size and order

with 3 slots on motherboard and 512 mb capacity, does it make any difference what size sticks are put in and in what order? ie: 1 512mb, 2 128mb and 1 256 or 2 256. and also is there any difference in what order they go in slots.

Answer:ram size and order

1 512mb, 2 128mb and 1 256

In three slots? Do you mean you have 512 in one slot and have three more spare? No you can get any size, you want to have all the same speeds though. If you buy one slower than the rest, they will all become that slow. If you get faster ones that the one you have they will all be wasted and go as slow as your current one.

If you have a 512, I would go for another 512... U2U

Sometimes I go in looking for tiny apps for a particular purpose, but I cannot sort by size. Why not provide this option even though you can sort by all other applicable criteria: Name, Date, License, OS, and Popularity? Please add that option if possible.

Hope this is an appropriate forum to post my question/suggestion...

Answer:About MG software downloads: Why no sort by size?

DomLuc said:

Size of the set up file is not really important. After all you can delete that after.
The size it takes up on the disk after install can be important - if you have disk space issues - but even more important than either is what RAM/CPU resources the program uses to run.
I'll give you an example:
Zone Alarms Free FW is a little less than HALF the set up file size of Comodo Internet Security - but CIS as a FW even with Defence + and AV protection enabled (which you don't have to enable) uses less than ONE THIRD of the RAM that ZW uses, and less than a quarter if the AV is not enabled. Click to expand...

I don't disagree, but I'd still like to be able to sort by size because as a rule of thumb huge programs are often bloatware, and because sometimes I just want a frugal utility to perform a single function, and I know (99%) that anything over, say 1 MB, won't fit the bill.

What I want to do is go through about 2.5 TB of video files and eliminate all files (within folders) that are not video files. That means of course that I want to be able to sort, and move to a separate hdd, all files that are below a certain size, i.e. too small to be a video file.

Now I do have Belvedere and DigitalJanitor, but have never used them. Is there a better way?

Note: I have all these files organized by Folders and do not want to destroy that organization. So I need, as I do frequently with Easeus Duplicate File Finder and Empty Folder Nuker, go through and cut out the files that are below a certain size and then move those files to a separate hdd.

I don't know what the hell this girl did to this computer before I got it (I mean besides infesting it with a million viruses, spyware, adware and a couple trojans including one that didn't allow me to use task manager, got it fixed here) but web pages are really big now. Like, everything's bigger on them, youtube videos don't fit in the whole screen even when not in full, and sometimes text in webpages just keeps going to the right or left off screen, and I can't see it. My screen's perfectly centered too, so it's not that.

I'd really like this fixed, but I don't even know where to begin, I've tried making smaller icons in XP but that doesn't help. I'd really like to be able to see webpages normally again.

The browser I use is Firefox, Win XP OS. I've got an Nvidia sound card I think. Intel Pentium 3 processor. You guys will have to tell me how to get to anymore relevant specs.

You guys helped me fix my Task Manager problem, so I hope you can help me with this too :D

Answer:[SOLVED] I've got some sort of size issue going on here

Right click a blank space on the Desktop choose Properties/Settings Tab. move the Screen Resolution bar to the right to increase the resolution. (Making everything smaller) Also check in Device Manager to see if there are any yellow marks next to the Display Adapter, if so, you will need to download an updated driver from the computer manufacturers web site.

Hi,

Is it possible to re-arrange the "Folder List" in Office XP?

My folder list used to be sorted alphabetically, but now my "Personal Folders" folder has somehow moved itself to the top above everything else.

Re-arranging it again alphabetically would be fine but I don't have a clue how to do it!

Hi all.

I'm having this really annoying problem that should be solved with a very simple procedure, but that does not seem to be the case and I cannot discover the reason.

What I want is for all of my folders to remember the view settings I set up with them.

I want these settings applied on a global (all folders) scale as..
-- sort:Type, options:Name/Size/Type/Date Modified/Date Created, format:Details.

From there, I will manually change the settings for photo locations to..
-- sort:Type, options:Name/Size/Type/Date Modified/Date Created, format:LargeThumbs.

Now, one might think that I could accomplish this goal by Tools->FolderOptions->View->"Remember Each Folder's View Settings [X]", then setting up a folder in the manner described.
From there, applying these options on a global scale would be as simple as Tools->FolderOptions->View->"Apply To Folders".

Am I incorrect? I've gotten the results I desire from this chain of events in the past; however, it is not performing as expected on this ocassion, and I am frustrated.

My folders commonly revert (on a basis that seems to be entirely spontaneous) to an entirely useless setup of.. sort:Rating, options:Name/Size/Tags/Rating, format:MediumThumbs.
What the hell do I need stars and buzzwords for on my files. I don't. I want useful descriptors, not arbitrary qualitative scales for people who can't remember where they put things, or never understood the concept of naming conventions.

Question: game view size

Hi I'm wondering if it's possible to make the pogo game view fill the screen? I have windows XP my games are only about 5x9 inches right now...and when I visited a friend of mine, her computer displays the game in full screen view...there must be away to change my view someplace...thank u Sher

Answer:game view size

Welcome to TSG

Be aware that the game screens on Club Pogo have been changed.
Since there are no ads on Club Pogo, they got rid of the top portion of the window where the ad banner used to load.
The amount of space the actual game portion takes up is the same on both.
However, the longer and shorter shape of the window is startling some people.

According to Pogo, Java games cannot ‘expand’ to match the size of the window.
So, to prevent display problems with the games, they disabled the 'maximize' button and the little arrows that let you resize the window on most of the games.
Even if you could resize the window, you’d just see a lot more of that light yellow background we use on most of the game windows.
It wouldn’t actually make the game screen any bigger.
The best thing to do is choose the largest game screen size setting (on your ‘My Account’ page) that will fit on your desktop, and stick with that.

Expanding the number of pixels your computer displays is a great way to make the game window fit on your computer even if you have a relatively small monitor.

To change your display resolution on a PC:

1) Click [Start], then click "Settings".
2) Select "Control Panel", and double click on the "Display" icon.
3) On the [Settings] tab you'll find a slider bar. Adjust this bar and then click [Apply].

Make sure your display is set to at least 800x600.
Before you apply the changes, check with your Monitor and vide... Read more

Also, you can try dragging & dropping some of the unused icons into the Customise Toolbar applet so that 'everything fits in'? If it doesn't help or I've misunderstood please let me know. G

Startup window minimized to 1/4th of orig. size, clock out of order, showing 00.00, 3/3/2003, and battery can't be recharged
Hello everybody. This is my first posting on this Forum.
My problem:
-The Windows XP start-up logo on screen (with the dots underneath ticking away) is suddenly 1/4 of screen size.
-'Error' message re. clock (shows 00.00, 3/3/2003). When finally the computer is set up, the size is ok again, but the clock though is still at the wrong time and date.

I've tried rebooting with F8 (in safe mode) and also to make a 'System restore', but afterwards it goes back to these same problems. I've also tried F2 and set the clock to the right time, but it only helps during the time when the computer is on. When I turn if off, and then on again, the time is wrong again.

-AND suddenly my battery can't be recharged either. (Linked or a separate problem?) I am of course running my lapton on AC power.
I've read somewhere that when the clock starts messing up like this, it indicates a serious problem. I don't know if this is a software or a hardware problem, so sorry if I'm posting this under the wrong headline...
I have a laptop Dell Inspiron 8000.
<removed by moderator at posters request>

Thanks a lot for all help you can offer.

Answer:Startup window minimized to 1/4th of orig. size, clock out of order, showing 00.00, 3

Could one reason for my problems be that the clock battery has stopped working? (I'm just thinking here.) In that case, does anybody know where I can find the physical clock battery on my Dell Inspiron 8000?

Thanks.

Hi all ! Have slipped a disc ( in my back not CD etc ) I am trying to get my daughters laptop sorted out and have just installed windows XP home on it as it was acting like my PC ( slow to stop )which turned out to have a virus that was only shifted on a reinstall. Its still really slow but even worse the screen is only a 1/4 of the monitor. Imagine a 13 by 9 cm screen with a big black frame. This has happened before on loading certain software such as her dance mat so I am not sure if it is connected to the reinstall. Anyway my ex wife is giving me grief so I need to sort it out tout suite. Any ideas ?

Answer:Solved: Screen View Only 1/4 size

Sounds like your screen resolution is set to lower than the LCD's physical resolution. Some laptops will stretch the display to fill the screen, others will just do what yours is doing. Some give you the option to change that behaviour, but the best solution is to just change the display resolution to the maximum the laptop will support.

To do this, right-click any empty area of the desktop and select Properties from the popup menu. That should give you the Display Properties box. Click the Settings tab on that, then in the Screen Resolution section, move the slider as far to the right as it will go, and click Apply.

If it still doesn't fill the screen, you may need to update the video driver - if it's a newer laptop, it's quite likely XP doesn't include drivers for the video and it's just running in generic VGA mode.

Hi allThis is something that has been plaguing me for as long as i can remember...Ok so normally when you open up a Microsoft Word document, there are a number of options you have for viewing the document. This ranges from a number of size percentages, followed by Page Width, Text Width, Whole Page and Two Pages, as seen here. Now, occasionally documents will get stuck in a restricted mode, with just some percentages and Page Width but thats it. As seen here:This is increadibly annoying, as no matter how many times you open up a new document its still stuck in this format. The only way I have found to get it back to normal is to find an older document that still has the expanded viewing options avalible, delete the entire contents, then save that as a new blank document and start over with that. Seems very stupid and inefficient to me.Does anybody know whats up with this and how I can switch it back to the normal expanded options? Why does it even revert to this anyway?thanks a lot!

Answer:Microsoft word help.... View size restricted!

It all depends on what view you are in.  Go up to View on your top menu bar.  If you are in "Print Layout" view, then you will have all the options you are looking for, i.e. your top picture.  If you are in "Normal" view, then your options will be restricted like in your 2nd picture. These views can also be changed bottom left of the word window just above the Page display.

What version of Windows is this?Your husband turned it off during a recovery process? Now that was the wrong thing to do.Now you're computer is in some undefined state between the restore point and what it was before the restore. My advice would be to reinstall Windows since interrupting a recovery operation can have messed up Windows pretty severely. But before you do that, tell us what version of Windows it is and maybe someone comes along with an easier solution than reinstalling windows.

Anybody experiencing problem with the modern apps, where the content of the app is bigger than the actual app window, so it is impossible to use it, because the controls (buttons, input fields, scrollbars are not visible)?
Resizing of the app does not help, as the content is still bigger (its wrongly resizing with the window). Even maximized app is still unusable.
It occurs mainly in the Skype, Mail, People or Calendar apps.
As you can see on the Skype screenshot, as soon as app starts it shifts the skype logo to the right, and the whole content is shifted as well.
You can also see the shift bellow, as the Options menu is partially hidden as well.
Skype is impossible to use, because the text input field on bottom is not visible.

Answer:Screen resolution, Text Size. Browsers Small size font.

hi Tuberoses,

Welcome to Lenovo Forums!

I tried looking around and I found this from Microsoft Website. You can give it a try.Spoiler (Highlight to read)
Make the text on your screen larger or smaller

You can make the text (and other things like icons) larger without changing the screen resolution of your monitor or laptop screen. That way, you can make text easier to see and still keep your monitor or laptop set to the best possible resolution.

Open Screen Resolution by swiping in from the right edge of the screen, tapping Search (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen, moving the mouse pointer down, and then clicking Search), entering Display in the search box, tapping or clicking Settings, and then tapping or clicking Display.

Choose one of the following:
Smaller - 100% (default). This keeps text and other items at normal size.

Medium - 125%. This sets text and other items to 125% of normal size.

Larger - 150%. This sets text and other items to 150% of normal size. This option appears only if your monitor supports a resolution of at least 1200 x 900 pixels.

Tap or click Apply.
To see the new text size, close all of your apps, and then sign out of Windows. The change will take effect the next time you sign in.
Also, you can change the text size for specific items in Windows, like window title bars or tooltips, without changing the size of anything else on the screen.

150% size zoom in corrupts Chrome and Adobe Reader - Windows Forum - Computer Support Forums
I have my Windows set to 150% zoom (otherwise it becomes hard to aim at the little buttons in order to click them) It's really nice to have the buttons really big in the list of options that come up when I press the Windows button on the left of Alt button.

But the problem is that it blows up Chrome and Adobe Reader so that it almost becomes unuseable.

Firefox and Internet Explorer is ok. Foxit Reader is ok.

Also, time to time the Chrome appears ok when I log in (not sure about Adobe Reader) but then when I sign out and log in again the overblownness appears again.

Answer:150% size zoom in makes Chrome and Adobe Reader overblown size

My experience is that the 150% only really works if you are using a high resolution, say 1920x1080.

If your native resolution is much lower than that you are going to get bleed over ... text running outside of the buttons they are meant to label... stuff like that.

Have you tried just using large icons instead of blowing up all text and buttons?

Hello Friends,

Over the past few days I have noticed that my Folder Properties (Right Click > Properties) doesn't show the 'folder size' or the 'number of files/folders' the folder contains.

In the General Tab of the Folder Properties the following is displayed:

Size : 0 bytes
Size on disk : 0 bytes
Contains: 0 Files, 0 Folders

Everything else works fine. This problem is specific to the folders. In case of files all details are shown as usual.
In fact when I bring my mouse over the folders the tool tips DO show the folder size and also names of files they contain.

Also this is not because of the folder being empty or anything as this problem is for ALL folders invariably including the Windows folder.
I have tried using Command Prompt. The 'dir' command can list the folder size with no problems.
I also have all requisite permissions as I am the admin. Also UAC etc. is in place.

Additional Details: I have no problems moving folders, copy pasting etc. whatsoever and the computer is working totally fine. Only this problem stumps me.

Please help.

When I used to open mspaint the pencil was the default tool and the default size was the thinnest. Now it defaults to the brush with a default size one step up from thinnest. Something changed but I don?t know what.

Is it possible to get it to default on something like the pencil or line, with a specific size (thickness)? This is annoying having to change the tool and its size all the time.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Gordon

For example, if I change the view of one folder to "large icons" or to "list" or whatever, then ALL of the folders will have that view. But I want specific folders to have specific view types. How can I accomplish this?

Answer:If I change the view of one folder, the view of all folders changes?!?

Hello S35,

Is this within a Libray folder?

All Included Folders and subfolders in a library will always share the same folder view. You can have separate Arrange by view settings in each added New folder in the library though.

Hi, I recently upgraded to Windows 10. I'm having some great difficulty in upsizing the default font size. I've tried changing the font size, but I'm only afforded the option to increase it to 24 (which the current font size is not). Apart from changing a file in regedit to change the default font which I learned from this link; http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/ch...ont-windows-10 , I don't know what might be the culprit behind this problem. I have tried upsizing to 125%-150% but some applications look blurry as a result. I would prefer to increase the font size and nothing else. Any suggestions?

Answer:Cannot change Windows 10 font size with text size increase

I think the culprit is likely my mod to regedit. Unfortunately, I did not save a back up. Would anybody know how to undo this change to regedit after implemented?

Hi, I am having some problem on my DVD playback after i install windows media player 11.
No sound during playback and size shrink to half of its original size.

Can someone teach me how to solve tat?

Answer:No sound on DVD playback and the size shrink to half of its original size

Hi,

do you have a codec pack and/or a separate DVD-player installed on your system? If not, then try it, because playing DVD?s with MediaPlayer 11 is not very comfortable and
you encounter errors e.g. like you have.

I suggest you: download a codec pack (e.g. K-lite or something else: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm) install it and maybe try to use another dvd player like "Media Player Classic" which plays almost every videofile/DVD/etc. which is existent.

Hope I could help you

Hello there, and thank you for viewing my thread!

After formatting my PC, I have made a fresh back up of all of my data onto my external hard drive (as you do). The problem I have, is that the external hard drive is showing as pretty much full, but there's nowhere near that much data on it!

I did a little bit of digging, and noticed that when I right click a folder on the external hard drive and go to 'Properties' that the size of the file shows as one value and the size on disk value is significantly larger in most cases.

In some cases, both values do not reflect the actual size of the file on my desktop.

The ExHD is in ExFat format, and I'm assuming it's something to do with the way it's formatted, I just don't know how to fix it. I've tried it a couple of different ways, with different 'Allocation Unit Size's, but for how long it takes to complete the back-up's each time I'd rather just ask for help and find out where I'm going wrong.

If anyone could help me sort this out I'd really appreciate it.

I edit a lot of home movies of my daughter, some video files are as large as 10GB so I cannot use the 4GB file size maximum given by NTFS.

Thank you so much!

I have Windows 7 x64 Home Premium. I always like to have all of the icons, and pictures in a folder display as a large icon, however, because of something I must have done, most of them are in list form, then I have to change it to Large icon. I'm not sure if they are all holding their setting after reboot either but that's another issue.

But for now, how do I make all of the pics in all of my image folders display as large icons? I think I may be missing a seeing for that in explorer but I do have Folder Options in my Control Panel.

Answer:Want all folders to have same size pics

Open any folder and click view and change all to large icons. Then click tools, folder options, then view and click the tab apply to all folders and all the folders will be the same as the one your looking at.

I must have done it again. I had different folders opening a different size on the screen. Now they are all the same size. About 3/4 of the screen. I sometimes have 2 or 3 folders open at the same time. I do not want to have to tile them. Some maybe on top, some right. Depends on what I am doing. I used to click the X while holding down Ctrl (Win98), and remembered the size and shape. This does not seem to work in my WinXP. Nothing fatal here, just not what I want. Can someone help.

Answer:Folders all the same size on the screen

Instead of maximizing the window, when it opens up,place the curser on the top of the window and move it wherever you want it,then place the curser on the bottom right corner of the window, hold the left mouse button and drag the widow open to whatever size you want. The next time you open it , it will open to the size and location you chose.

Windows 7 doesn't let you organise folders according to their size. I was hoping that maybe 10 does? Or maybe there's some complicated reason why it can't ever be done?

Answer:Can you organise folders by their size in Win 10?

Short version: it doesn't work that way, not without without performance hit. It's not like a box that you can plop on a scale to see how much it and it's contents weighs. There are a few third-party programs, I've used SpaceSniffer.

I've done a couple of searches for terms I thought might be relevant to my question but didn't turn up anything that looked helpful. I need Folder List view but badly want to use seven-forums' awesome auto-arrange solution, which won't work with the gutted win7 list view. I've been giving Small Icons a try as the closest thing to list view, but there's one problem with Small Icons that I find to be a deal-breaker: when Small icons has a big enough window to display columns, it doesn't list the items in order all the way down a full column and begin again at the top of the next column, like List view. Instead, Small icons sorts items _across_, in rows, and begins again at the next row.

Unfortunately, although I've given it a good try, I find that it's far more intuitive for my eye to move down a column when dealing with discontinuous units of information (such as file names) than it is to move across rows, so I absolutely must find a way to change this or it's back to List view and (ugh) auto-arrange.

I know the Windows GUI doesn't provide a way to do this, but is it possible with a registry hack? One of my web searches revealed ListView (GUI), which might enable me to use list view in such a way as to prevent auto-arranging, but my scripting ability is way too limited for me to jump into something like that without a couple of vacations' worth of spare time to do lots and lots of learning-curve work.

Thanks much for either good or bad news re the Small-icons issue--... Read more
