Can't get updates for xp pro or windows defender error 0x80072ee2

Question: Can't get updates for xp pro or windows defender error 0x80072ee2

Tried all the microsoft methods (about 3 times) to repair this error code, all to no avail. Please advise me on what to do so that I may receive automatic updates and updates for windows defender. I'm on a home computer running xp pro with a direct connection to the internet, no proxy. Checked Services pertaining to this seem to all be on unless I'm missing something. The only firewall is the microsoft firewall. Tried turning it off and still cannot access updates. Did an ipconfig /flushdns. What am I missing? Your help would be greatly appreciated.:confused

Preferred Solution: Can't get updates for xp pro or windows defender error 0x80072ee2

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

What service pack are you at with XP?

Are you connecting via a router to the internet or directly through a modem, if so what models?
At times the MTU setting of the modems can cause WU issues so access your modem/routers panel and change the MTU to 1492

Could try re-registering the components to WU, click start > run and type each one at a time.

net stop wuauserv

Question: Error 0x80072ee2

Hi,

It's has been two weeks or more that I can't do Windows Update on Windows 7 SP1 machines (Windows Server 2008 R2 too).
What happens: fresh new install (no matter where... Virtual Machine, Desktop, Notebook) of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 64 bits.
I try to look for updates and it keeps searching for a long time... Then it returns the 0x80072ee2 error.
Sometimes the error 0x80244010 appears too.
So I tried this today:

Fresh installed Windows 7 Service Pack 1Installed this updates manually (in this order):

Then tried to look for updates... Error 0x80244010Tried to search again and it took ~ 1 hour and 30 to show 204 updates to install.
Trying now to install 40 updates at a time to see if I'm able to deliver the machine fully updated.
Tried to do the same thing on a notebook.... and the error 0x80072ee2 keeps on appearing.
Posted this on Technet WSUS forum (yes, we are having the same problem at work), answer.microsoft.com and no one seems to care.
It's been a real pain ... Read more

Ever time I try to open the store, I'm getting error code 0x80072ee2.
I went to Microsoft support, and they suggested Windowsupdatediagnostic to fix this.
When I ran that it gave me Service Registration missing or corrupt. (see image)
Is there a way to fix the Service Registration.

Win 10 Pro th2 10586
Asus Essentio 12 GB ram
AMD A8-5500 with Radeon HD Graphics 3.2 GHz

I just updated to build th2 10586 2 days ago. Build 10565 didn't have this problem.

Turns out my internet provider was having problems, not my pc.
Error code is gone, and Service Registration is not corrupt or missing.
Thanks anyways.

Hi,
I've been trying to download SP2 (from the official Microsoft website, using Update) but it never works. I always get the same error mesasage:
Error No. 0x80072EE2

None of the given links are helpful in solving the problems.

Also I tried in frustration purchasing the SP2 installation CD, but had problems sending in my order!

*for extra information about the current condition of my computer, here is the link to my other thread: http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...ing-etc-2.html

I have also gone to the link provided by Ried (http://www.updatexp.com/0x8007007E.html) and gone through each step provided on that site, but none of it has worked (no matter if I choose Express or Custom in the Windows Updates page.)

Anyone know what I can do now so I can download and install XP SP2? (and YES I have read the important thread about SP2 on here... I don't have TV Media on my computer)

Answer:can't download/install SP2 - Error No. 0x80072EE2

Hi,

Take a look at this page from the MSKB: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/836941

The steps are mostly the same, but you might want to give the Guided Help program a shot.

Note at the bottom it says to make sure you have the latest Background Intelligent Transfer Service installed. You can get the latest here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/842773

I use Windows Defender as my primary protection on my Win 8.1 ASUS X54C Laptop. Every day there are updates available for Win Defender, and I always install them.

There are many KB 2267602 updates for Windows Defender, and I do understand that each update is a different definition version of that update.

I assume that each version is cumulative, and the latest Defender version "adds on" to previous definition versions of that KB2267602 ... am I correct in my assumption?

My question .. can I then delete all older definitions of KB2267602, and only keep the latest version?

If the answer to my above question is 'yes' then how do I delete all the older KB 2267602 definitions?

Attached is a screen capture of some of the definition updates currently installed (there are a couple of other updates in this list, not relevant to KB2267602, and I would not delete them)

I have windows update set to just check for updates and let know if any are available. Yet each time I check for updates there always is one for Windows Defender though I have received no notification. Does Defender update itself like, as I recall, Windows Security Essentials did under Win 7?

Thank you.

Answer:Windows Defender Updates

I am afraid you need to install the updates for Defender manually if you haven't enabled Automatic Updates. The reason, I think that Defender is built within the OS and MSE was installed separately in Windows 7.

Why does Windows Defender Get such a Bad Rep?

I see everyone says "Oh Windows Defender sucks" or it failed this test of that test...windows Defender is a good app if configured correctly.

It finds some of the most prevalent spyware(don't be fooled by corrupt testing sponsored by such companies as symantec, webroot and others) Windows Defender is not that bad

you need to make "One" change to its default settings and it is an excellent product...better than webroot, counterspy, and many others

Join Microsoft Spynet with "Advanced Membership" as shown in this screen shot..

Keep this application updated as its meant to be..

With this you get "Full blown" HIPS Protection...for these things

the default settings(Spynet Basic Membership) ignores most of these by default so the "Average Joe User" who is not a computer guru is not overwhelmed with pop-ups, yet Windows Defender handles what it knows to be good or bad

with the "Advanced Spynet" Membership...you get full blown control over these things, and what is more is...if more people join with the "Advanced Membership" anything you classify as "Bad" will get sent to Microsoft and added to the Definition Database, thus we all can take our part in "Greatly Improving" Windows Defender.

some people have concerns that it spy's on you, that really isn't true..... Read more

I just got back to my college campus today and hooked up my computer that I hadn't used for 4 months while I was on summer break. I had previously been using Microsoft Antispyware, which is now Windows Defender. So I installed Windows Defender. However, when I check for updates to it, it never finds any. Whenever I open it, it says that my definitions haven't been updated in 212 days, and right now it's just on version 1.0.0.0, released on 1/25/2006.

Now, I know there is absolutely no way that any security program would go that long without some updates, so what is the problem? Any ideas what could be keeping it from updating? Whenever I search for updates, a message pops up telling me that it's connecting to the Internet to search for updates, and then a minute or two later, another message tells me that there are no new updates or definitions.

I followed the instructions found at Microsoft's Support Site, but afterwards I still got the same results when I tried to update. However, I noticed the following line of text:

"This problem occurs because after Windows Defender Beta 2 has been reinstalled, it does not automatically obtain new definitions until the next definition update is published on the Windows Update Web site."

Does this mean that if nothing else will work to allow me to update sooner, at the very least I will be able to update it once new definitions are updated online?

Thanks to anyone who can help me out with this.

OS : W8.1
Product : Windows Defender

Users of Windows Defender in W8.1 need to be aware of the following change in behaviour.

When a user is logged in as a Standard User, updates for Windows Defender Virus and Spyware Definitions database are downloaded automatically but are not installed. This behaviour is different to behaviour prior to W8.1 I cannot find any documentation from Redmond that indicates that this is a planned change of behaviour, so one must assume therefore that it is an oversight in the W8.1 environment.

Work-a-round

a) The Standard User can open the WD interface and perform a manual update (which is a real nuisance)

b) The Standard User can login as an Administrator and install the update which will now be sitting in Windows Updates (which is a pain-in-the-rear-end)

For example, if the Standard User does not do one of the above, say for a week, then they will find that the WD Definitions are a week out-of-date - which is obviously a security issue.

I know that this is a common problem as I've seen this posted before but Windows Defender will not update and constanty pops up in the status bar to tell me that it hasn't been updated for 14 days. I've done the solution here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=915105 but I am wondering if this is something that is supposed to be a one time fix or do I have to keep doing it over and over. I'm guessing that I'll probably have to wait for the new version until this problem is sorted out. It's really a shame because I think it's a great program.

Hope someone here can help.
In the last 5 days I have noticed my definitions for window defender KB915597 is at 1.43.801.0 and hasn`t changed at all... Generally i have seen defender updates definitions install without any problems , sometimes several times a week . Both my PC and my wife are Dell desktop machines on Vista Home Premium Edition IE 7 SP 1 for several months and the updates were being installed without any problems until the last one on Sept.26. Nothing in the configuration of Windows Update - Control Panel - Change setting has been adjusted in months.
Has anyone else expierenced this and know what is causing the no updates for defender. One machine has the Symantec anti-virus expired and the other has the McAfee expired but that shouldn`t be the cause since they have been expired for several months and definitions were being installed in the background for months , unless there is some connection now.

thanks for any ideas

Hi Micter,

this is a known bug with Windows Defender which I hope is currently being addressed by MS.

Please try the following:

Start - Run - type the following:
msiexec /x {A5CC2A09-E9D3-49EC-923D-03874BBD4C2C}

You'll be prompted to confirm file deletion, click Yes then try updating again..you may well have to download the same update again but hopefully, only once :-)

So the first thing I did with Surface Pro 3 was run all the updates. I would actually have to go back to the previous menu, and back into the update section to recheck for updates. All until I could reboot, and there were no more updates available.

So ever since then, I have been getting new update messages almost every day. And it's always a Windows Defender update. Which I don't even use. I haven't installed Malware Bytes yet. I don't know if doing so will fix this so that I no longer get informed that I have new updates when it's just Defender.

Anyway, I'm thinking of just turning off the automatic check because of this. The whole reason I have it on is so that Windows can check for updates automatically, and let me know when I have actual new updates to download. However, I don't care about Defender updates. I need to fix it so that it will only tell me when there's actual new updates that has nothing to do with Defender. And stop telling me that I have new updates when it's just for worthless Defender.

Answer:What's with the Windows Defender Updates?

Every piece of anti virus software will have its own database definition to keep a list of known malware, spyware, virus etc... Since new virus, malware etc... are created every day. They will have to update their definition to include them.

Windows defender is no different. If you don't want to see the reminder message, you can open the Services and turn off Windows Defender (not advisable) or you can set Windows Updates to automatically download and install the updates silently.

Every time I try to manually download any kind of update I get this message:

C:\Program Files\WindowsDefender\MpOav.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error.Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact sys admin or software vendor.

I have vista home premium that I upgraded from xp.I don't have any installation media for windows defender nor can I figure out how to remove it.

Can anyone help please?

So I found this over at wilder security:

Windows Defender (MSE) now updates every 2 hours?

And it looks like Microsoft now releases definition updates every 2 hours, which is just fantastic, coupled with the enhanced cloud av component released in the Windows 10 ANE update. WD is becoming a seriously powerful AV

Answer:Windows defender moves to 12 updates a day.

That's good news, altough it still doesn't have my trust :/

Title says it all really. For the last few days I'm being offered updates for Defender which I don't have. I believe Defender started with W8. I let it go ahead the first time thinking it would 'realize' Defender wasn't installed on W7 but it appears to have installed the update anyway !

I get Defender updates on W10 but that's fine.

Answer:Getting Windows Defender updates offered on W7

It will not hurt if you accepted the update. It will not cause any problems and take very little valuable space. You do have Windows Defender, it may be turned off however. Go to search by the start button and type Defender.

Has anyone else noticed that the size of the daily definition download has dramatically increased? Prior to FCU the average size for me was under 1mb, now it has balloned to just under 30mb. This is of course downloading via Windows Update. Is this some kind of unusual quirk with my machine, or has definition delivery radically changed with FCU?

For the past week or so my WSUS server has been pulling around 3 windows defender updates every day and one or two of them are already shown as being superseded by another update.

Before this started happening I normally saw one defender update released on Tuesday and Friday afternoons.

Anyone else seeing this on their WSUS server?

Yep, i've been seeing this for the past year (daily). I figured they were just updating the definitions more than once per day.

I run a 6-month old PC with 64-bit Win 7 OS. After Windows update had finished its latest round of updates today and presented me with the update log, I noticed that there are five failed important definition updates for Windows Defender KB15597. These are:1.79.308.01.79.1432.01.79.1818.01.81.1347.01.81.1622.0However, definition 1.81.1890.0 (the latest) was successfully installed on 17th May.In the case of KB15597 does the latest update write over the previous / earlier updates, or are they all cumulative? (i.e. Do I need to try and obtain / install these failed updates again, or can I ignore them since later ones have installed OK?

Updates WILL fail if they are already on your system -ie. they have been previously downloaded - they do not overwrite.

I have an Asus T100 tablet running Win 8.1 and had been having problems with windows updates. I was having so many failures that I have now done a complete re-install. This has gone well but, during the install and doing the miriad of windows updates, the windows defender updates continually failed. To ovecome these failures, I had to go into defender and do the updates from there (which then cleared the defender updates from windows update).

I have now installed Norton Security and Windows Defender has been disabled. However, whenever I do a windows update, defender updates are still coming though as important updates which windows then tries, and fails, to install.

Are there any settings that can prevent windows updates checking for defender updates when defender is not being used?

Answer:How can you disable windows defender updates

you can uncheck the updates you don't need and hide them, so when you search for updates they don't show up. Also se the updates from automatic to manual

I'm puzzled, Why does Windows Update keep trying to tell me I need to update Windows Defender when I have Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) installed and have deinstalled Microsoft's own anti-virus software?

Thanks, in advance, for any insight.

Answer:Why Does Windows Defender Keep Needing Updates?

Hi HenriK37,

Quote:

Not sure what you mean by the above. The only anti-virus software that Microsoft developed is Microsoft Security Essentials. Windows Defender is the resident (built in) anti-spyware software and should have been disabled by default when you installed Kaspersky Internet Security.

Check to see if the Windows Defender service is disabled. The link below will provide instructions on how to do so.

Recently I am also frequently prompted to install important updates to Windows Defender which fails to install too. I run Bitdefender which probably turns off Windows Defender. Back in November, Windows Update inexplicably stopped working. After several weeks of diagnosis (including a reformat/reinstall of Windows), it seems that IPv6 is the culprit - it seems that my ISP recently rolled out IPv6 secretly. Unchecking the IPv6 checkbox on the network adapter finally solved the problem.

Now the question is, why does the addition of IPv6 break Windows Update? I mean, IPv4 is still there...

Perfectly normal - they are the AV and anti-malware definitions, the same as with any other Anti-Virus. There's usually at least two updates released every day - so don't be surprised by that, either.

Every so often, Windows Defender (Windows 8.1) hounds me to update. It 'updates' for hours and never finishes. What's the deal with this?

Answer:Windows Defender updates for hours - never finishes

Hi,
Defender needs to update regularly - like at least weekly. When you let it go too long it almost has to reinstall itself completely, a task it may not be designed to do well.
Take the easy way out - update weekly, or more often. Updates are available daily from MS.
Keep us posted

Hello,
I am using Windows 10, and my web browser is Mozilla Firefox.
I launch Windows Defender, select the Update tab then click on Update Definitions. The download process starts, with green bar moving across the progress bar. It gets about one third of the way then just stops -- no error message or any other indication of what is happening. I have tried several times, and left it for hours, but it never completes, and I just have to cancel it. I have not tried turning off the Windows Firewall, but am reluctant to do this. Can you advise on what is going wrong?
Many thanks.

Answer:Windows Defender, Download of Updates fails

Personally I would recommend that you don't use Windows Defender as it lags behind almost all 3rd party products in terms of protection.
If you are intent on using it, however, then downloading the correct copy of the newest version for windows 10 and running it manually should hopefully fix the update issues. Scroll down to the manual downloads section of this page for the download, make sure you download the right version (x32 or x64): click here

I am using Windows 8 not 8.1

A few days ago I shut down my computer. I didn't notice that it never actually turned off like usual until the next day. I had to hold the power button to turn it off. It started back up that day without any apparent issues and Windows Updates and Defender definitions were being downloaded and installed normally. I am not sure if that is relevant but I wanted to include all info I could think of.

The following day Windows Update brought up an error when trying to download the newest definitions (I have WU set to check but notify me before automatically installing which is why I manually install Defender definitions via WU daily). The WU error code is listed as 80070002 but event viewer shows it as 0x80070643. WU appears to be able to search and find the latest definitions, as the version numbers have changed over time, and completes downloading them but gets the error when trying to install them.

Trying to manually install them via the Defender program does the same but just says it fails due to connection issues (no other connection issues are present). I can manually download the 100 MB+ file direct from Microsoft and update them that way without issue.

Things I have tried to troubleshoot.

- System restore to a date about a week before this problem occurred. No change in being able to download Defender definitions via WU or Defender itself. WU did find the IE Flash update from the 26th and was able to install that with no problem... Read more

Like most people, I don't rely solely on Windows Defender and thus I use a separate third-party antivirus product. I run both real-time and on-demand scans using the third-party antivirus product.

As a secondary precaution, I run Windows Defender on-demand scans, but don't use it's real-time protection.

Thus the only time I need the Windows Defender definitions updated are before I use it to run an on-demand scan.

Like many people, I have Windows Update set to show updates as soon as they become available, but prompt before downloading them.

The frequent alerts about Windows Updates that are really only Windows Defender definition updates are a time waster. Each time, I have to go into Windows Update to see if there was an urgent Windows Update, or just another Windows Defender definitions update.

I would like to continue to be notified of all Windows Updates, but not be annoyed by Windows Defender definition updates. I would like the Windows Defender definition updates to be treated as "optional" updates that I can install when I see fit.

How can this be accomplished without losing functionality?

Answer:Removing alerts for Windows Defender updates only

I don't think you can do what you want without some 3rd party program.

What you can do is set up a scheduled task to automatically get Windows Defender definition updates.
If you're open to that approach I'll see if I can find instructions for this for Win 7.

Here is an article for Win 8, and Win 7 is pretty much the same.

There's something wrong that I just can't narrow down and solve on my own.

Windows updates won't install, Adobe updates won't install, Windows Defender and Norton 360 won't even start.

I've run Malware Bytes AntiMalware, Junkware Removal Tool, and even tried AVAST Free AntiVirus, but they haven't found anything that I can tell as being the problem.

Any ideas on where I can start next?

Thanks in Advance!

Answer:Can't install updates, Windows Defender and Norton won't run

Uninstall Norton, then run the Norton Removal tool.  Then Download Security Check to your desktop, right click it run as administrator. When the program completes, the tool will automatically open a log file, please post that log here in your next post.

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.
Close all open programs and internet browsers.
Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
Click on Scan button.
When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.

Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, right-click it and select Run as administrator.
The tool will open and start scanning your system.
Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
On completion, a log is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
Please post the JRT log.

Adware Removal Tool Scan.

The last few days, Defender has been trying and failing to update its definitions. A manual update from Defender fails. Now Defender isn't working. Pressing Defender's Start button gives the message that the underlying service isn't running. The service is set to automatic, it can be started but immediately stops.

Is there any known way to repair this short of a Windows refresh?

Heeeeelp!

I have a new Yoga 3 11, 64-bit, Windows 8.1 OS, running Windows Defender as my antivirus software as I've had no issues with it in the past. After about 1 month of use I did an Virus/Spyware Update and the next day the touch screen and bluetooth drivers were not working. Not only that, but Bluetooth option was completely removed from the PC Settings. At that time I didn't realize what update caused the driver issues, so I called Lenovo and wasted an entire day while they tried a bunch of troubleshooting resulting in the conculsion that "There's something wrong with your drivers." Rather than be without my computer for 10 days to have them send it back in the same condition (what usually happens), I reset the system to a previous point in time. Poof no problem, but I had to reinstall a bunch of programs.

Fast forward to today, and the only update that was installed yesterday was Virus/Spyware Definitions for Windows Defender. Computer sat spinning on "Shutting Down" this morning when I tried to boot it up. Again, Bluetooth and touchscreen not working, Bluetooth doesn't show up in PC Settings. The Defender update shows as installed successfully under Control Panel - View Your Update History, but no way to uninstall it as it does not show up under Uninstall Updates. (Not that I think that would help, because the drivers are already jacked up).

Good evening everyone,

This'll be a quick post (I have read the read first file, but simply do not have the time between now and a much-needed nap to follow all the instructions - If you say there is nothing to be done without these steps I'll do them tomorrow first thing after work.)

My laptop has recently become infected by the Belgian equivalent of the eCops ransomware - Federal Computer Crime Unit it's called. It claims Belgian authorities have locked my computer because I've been doing naughty things on it, and will graciously accept payment via Ukash to unlock it. Sure.

Advised by my friendly neighbourhood IT-man who recently fixed a similar case, I downloaded Windows Defender Offline to fix it. Link is here, but it's in Dutch...

polfed-fedpol.be/crim/crim_fccu_ransomware_nl.php

I downloaded the wizard, and installed it on a USB stick. When I boot the infected laptop from that USB stick, the options to do a scan are greyed out, claiming the virus definitions are outdated, and it can't scan. When I try to update the virus-definitions, it gives me an error (0x80072ee7) and says it can't update them.

When I plug the USB stick back into the healthy computer and restart the wizard, it says it's updating the virus-definitions, and appears to be downloading files (some 62 MB). However, when I boot from it a second (and third) time, I'm stuck in the same loop (Scan - can't scan, update - update - can't update).

Hello everyone,
My computer is set to fast ring and stuck on build 14316. However, it keeps getting Windows Defender updates (currently on antivirus definition 1.219.607.0 although I feel like it will get updated again in a few hours). Are these two linked? Meaning, unless I get the absolute latest Windows Defender update, my computer will not download build 14332? If not, what are some things I can do to possibly get the latest fast ring build? So far the only thing I can think of is wait until the next ISO is released.
Thanks.

About a month ago, I used the built-in Windows 10 recovery method to reinstall Windows 10. I still had a few glitches from my original Windows 7 installation, and these have been resolved by the reinstall.

One thing I've noticed, however, is that I'm getting an error message whenever I try to install the definition update for Windows Defender:

Definitie-update voor Windows Defender - KB2267602 (definitie 1.215.1024.0) - Fout 0x80070643

I already tried sfc /scannow, and it didn't find anything that required fixing. I also tried MicrosoftFixit.msi and NetFxRepairTool.exe, because Googling the error message brought me the news that it was related to the .NET framework.

To be clear: I don't use Windows Defender right now. I got Norton Security installed and it serves me well. I know some people consider it a resource hog, but I've tried Avira as a recommendation by Tom's Guide and it was even worse. My Norton still lasts over 200 days so I have plenty of time if I want to replace it by then. However, I do want Windows to be fully updated, and not having that update finished just stands out like a red ship in a sea of white.

I've considered that this error might be because of Norton, but I didn't have issues before resetting Windows, so I don't see why it would be Norton that suddenly throws a fit about it.

How do I fix this?

I've followed instructions for setting up Windows Defender updates with task scheduler but it's not working. Windows defender opens up at the scheduled times but just does nothing. Guides I followed:

Has anyone got this working for them? I've set my ethernet connection to metered in the registry.

Not sure if it's just me, but for some reason, since the Jan 12 patch Tuesday, I no longer see definition updates for Windows Defender on Windows Update's "View your update history" page.
Anyone else noticing this? I, for one, am happy about this change, since those "Definition Update for Windows Defender - KB2267602" were clogging up the update history page.

Answer:Definition updates for Windows Defender no longer show up on history?

They no longer are listed under View your update history page.
All installed WD definitions go directly to Windows Defender.
If you open WD and click Update tab at the top, you'll see the latest definition listed as well as the date and time installed.

System is fully updated XP Home. Still using Defender (along with MBAM and MBAE and Avira). 4/11/16 was the last time I was able to update Defender.    I now get the message: 'mpas-fe.exe is not a valid Win32 application'.  I download the updates using "hxxp://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=70631". This has worked for years.   All other .exe files seem to work.

Attached are Addition.txt and FRST.txt  from Farbar.

Like the title says... I was forced to reformat my computer in 2013 and ever since then, I've been encountering problem after problem. Some of them were there since the initial update but a lot of things seem to be gradually getting worse over time.

Today, after attempting to install "Windows Live ID Sign-In Assistant" I was greeted with the oh-so-helpful message that the program installation had failed because of "an error". Always an informative and useful message.

After about 2 solid hours of Google Fu, I discovered that the number one fix for this is to enable my Windows Updates.

Only, I can't.

I get this:

Hitting the "check for updates" button results in this:

Of course, when I manage my computer, it says my windows updates should be running automatically with a "delayed startup", and are currently running.

They're not, of course, but it says they are, because apparently my computer likes to lie to me.

Now, the obvious course of action here would be to run a troubleshooter, right? See if there's some underlying issue.

Well, I'd love to do that, but my troubleshooter doesn't work, either. Every time I run it (for instance, to see what's wrong with Window's Update) I get this:

Let's click that handy "View error details" button, shall we?

Error Code: 0x8E5E0247

Googling this results in a bunch of stuff about hard drives and intel cores... None of which I could make an... Read more

Hey guys ... I also posted this on Microsoft's site but I'm assuming no help will come from there. Reserved the Windows 10 upgrade on my desktop, and now I have a slew of issues after a day or two of it working well after upgrading. I am unable to start Windows Defender, three updates are failing and I cannot activate Windows 10. Here's all my issues below, copied from the MS site:

1. Windows Defender fails to start (Error code: 0x800705b4)
Windows Defender won't start and gives the error message "An error has occurred in the program during initialization. If this problem continues, please contact your system administrator." I have already tried uninstalling Avast and have no other third party antivirus.

2. Windows Update KB2267602 fails (Error code: 0x80070643)
This is a definition update for Windows Defender.

3. Windows Update KB3074678 fails (Error code: 0x8000ffff)
This is listed as an update for Windows 10 for x64-based systems

4. Windows Update KB3074686 fails (Error code: 0x8000ffff)
This is listed as an update for Windows 10 for x64-based systems

5. Windows cannot activate
I am also having the issues that other people are having with activation. "Windows can't activate. Try again later." is the error message I get.

Answer:Multiple updates fail, Windows Defender won't start, can't activate

NinnyJams,
I had the same problem and found a resolution on the Microsoft forum that was posted by one of their engineers. There were three 'methods' listed in the post; method 1, which basically scans your PC is the one that worked in my case. The scan found a corrupt file and fixed it. I've had no problems with updates since running the scan.

The link ishttp://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...c-b7d8a80e49f2

I hope this resolves your issue too.

Good luck.

I'm almost positive that my title says it all, whatever is on this laptop, is stubborn! I'm savvy enough to get myself in trouble and have tried so many things - perhaps I've made it worse or it even more likely, just beyond my scope of knowledge.
I am unable to install windows updates- they it says failed. Malwarebytes scanned caught & quarantined, emsisoft installed, scanned- quaritined- (since uninstalled), same with eset online scanner.

When I go to a webpage, the entire page shifts down, I get blocks of flashing ads on the page and sometimes another tab opens up- according to my history it's "a.akamaihd.net redirect".

I've got complete scan logs from farbwar that I can provide, but as requested before posting here is the information on this computer.
Please Please please help..

I am on Windows 8 (original/classic x64 Pro), and since I have now installed all updates, I attempted turning off the Windows Update service, and then tested updating Windows Defender. Voila! It worked.

But if I keep my system in the configuration, will there be an issue running or updating Windows Defender (and would there be a functionality issue for Windows itself in the future)?

Just noticed that after the install of the fall update, Windows Defender definition updates no longer appear in advanced update settings after they install: see All Settings>Update Security>Advanced options>View Your Update History.

It appears that only Windows updates now are registered in Update History.

I believe all previous versions of Insider showed the Defender updates.

Is there a policy setting in Group Policy where I can set Windows Defender to update its malware definitions automatically without relying on the use of Windows Updates?

I set Windows Updates to Notify for Download but the thing is, that Windows Defender updates keeps notifying me every day of new Defender updates and its annoying.

Is there any possibility to do this?

And what about you guys here?
How do you set your Windows Updates?
Is it set to Automatic or always Notify?

Thanks

Hello. Got a new desktop in August with Vista on it. Windows updates and Windows Defender updates ran fine on it until approximately Sep 22nd. Since then I have been unable to get either one to update, nor can I download anything from the Microsoft site. When I try I get a pop up page that shows the typical "Page cannot be found" error message. I run Firefox as my main browser but always use IE when trying to d/l from Microsoft. Windows Defender comes up with this error code: 0x80190194 but if Windows Updates has an error code I have been unable to locate it. Any help with this would be appreciated. I was pretty good with XP but Vista is still a foreign war zone to me. Thanks bunches!
