How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

Question: How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

Can change folder and shortcut icons with XP features, but is there an XP feature or 3rd party software package (possibly freeware) that can change (all extension types) file icons ?
Am looking at shareware (about $20) 'IconChanger 3.7' but not sure what file extensions it can work with (have emailed IC tech support for that list, but have not yet heard back).
Any ideas ?

Preferred Solution: How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: How to change file/s icons in addition to folder & shortcut icons ???

I've found a couple of free ones. There's the XP Transformation Pack which will make XP look like Vista (I think). I have another one, but I can't remember what it's called or where I downloaded it from. I think I have the info at home (I'm at work right know) and if I find it, I'll be sure to post it...

Edit: here's one I found whilst Googling. It's an icon pack for about 30 or 40 different extensions....
http://interfacelift.com/icons-win/details.php?id=1928 Their home page provides access to a bunch of other icons... check it out.. If you're interested in making your own icons, there's lots of tools out there. The free ones are OK but usually limited in features. IconCool is one of the better ones, but it's not free. I Googled "XP icons" and found lots of stuff...

Edit #2: if you have seen icons already on your PC that you'd like to extract for personal use, use IconSnatcher. It will look inside EXE files and DLL files (and lots of others) http://www.snapfiles.com/get/iconsnatcher.html

Hello! So I just signed up here because I'm desperate and don't know what to do.

So basically, I thought the windows 10 default folder icons were pretty bland and ugly so I decided to change them. I read that you could change your default icons by going into to registry and I did just that. Long story short, it didn't work so i deleted the registry folder that I had just created, like they said you could. I was very careful (or so I think) to not touch anything else

But now I'm worried I might have messed up somewhere because now I can't change icons for some of the folders I use. Not sure if this was a problem before that I didn't notice or if it's due to me messing around with things I don't understand.

As things are now, I can change icons for folders that I created but the folders that came with the system (like documents, music, movies, downloads etc) I'm currently unable to change. The thing is, I was able to change the folder icons just a while ago, so I changed them all by right clicking on the folder, choosing properties and then changing the icon, and that worked fine. Then I decided to just use the default icons anyway but I was only able to switch back some of them, and some of those now had the wrong folder icon. My "downloads" folder is just a blank white space for example and I'm unable to change it.

Hi, whenever you are about to make changes to your registry, back up beforehand. So you now know that and I'll show you an excellent way to rescue yourself in future.

First, do you have System Restore turned on (it's off by default in '10), and do you have any useful restore points?
Second, have you made a system image using Windows Backup and Restore or do you use disk imaging?

Either of those could let you restore your PC to a point before you made these changes- hopefully System Restore would protect enough to reverse your changes.

Please advise.

If you can't do that, and you are convinced there is a problem, then you may have two options, assuming you've not done some damage to the registry.

1. If you create a new user account for test purposes, do your folders look normal?

2. If not, I suggest you do an in-place upgrade repair install.
I will provide the instructions if necessary when you have replied.

Please post back and advise on these points.

I can also tell you how to achieve this quite easily and relatively safely:
Now here's the backup method we strongly recommend:
Creating disk images lets you restore Windows and all your disks and partitions to a previous working state, quickly and probably without technical help.

You can recover from:
- a failed disk drive (restore to a new one)
- ransomware (which encrypts your disk)
- user error
- unrecoverable problems from failed updates to problem programs
- unbootable PC (hardware faults aside)

I have two icons that I want to assign to two folders. Unfortunately, something has gone wrong. Let me explain what happened step by step:

1. I have two folders: "A" and "B".
2. I have two icons (.ico files): "A" and "B".
3. I place icon "A" in folder "A" and icon "B" in folder "B".
4. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
5. I notice that I've switched the icons around.
6. I move icon "A" to folder "B" and icon "B" to folder "A".
7. I rename icon "A" to "B" and icon "B" to "A".
8. I assign icon "A" to folder "A" and icon "B" to folder "B".
9. I notice that I still get to see the switched-around icons that I assigned in step 4 in the large and extra large icon views. In the smaller views the folder icons are now correct.

Here's what I did to try solve this problem:

- Follow two tutorials: Icon Cache - Rebuild and Default File Associations - Restore in Windows 8 (for .ico files).
- Remove the icon cache using the Disk Cleanup utility.
- Run "sfc /scannow" and "chkdsk /f /r".
- Run CCleaner to cleanup the registry and manually remove some registry keys that I pinpointed by looking for the registry keys that change when I assign an icon to a folder.
- Restart the computer and the "explorer.exe&... Read more

I've tried doing it through Folder Options > File Types, but that screws my system up so can't do it that way :S

Any help is really appreciated, this is really annoying.....

I'm using Windows XP SP2, by the way!

I've been tinkering with the look of my whole system recently. I didn't like the default theme or the folder icons. Now with the help of SevenForums article How to change default folder icons: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials...lder-icon.html. It was a very handy article that got me quite far and the same principles applied to Win10 as it did on 7

I've been able to change only a few of the default folders. Now as I'm fairly average at tinkering I've done what the article said on my 10 machine with some success as shown below:

However the live folders do not update despite editing both the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons AND the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\explorer\Shell Icons Registry locations. This met with the above result after a restart. Below you can see what I did to the registry:

As you can see from the registry paths I replaced 3, 4, 5 (back), 6 (front) and 162 (full). But 5, 6 and 162 have not updated at all.

So Am I missing something or is there no way to alter these types of folders? Including but not limited to such as the Fonts folder icon, live folders, full folders or folders containing data of one form or another for example:

Any thoughts, help or suggestions would be appreciated, and if this article happens to already exist somewhere I do apologise for cluttering the forum up here as I've not been able to find anything specific so far.

Oh boy! More Windows 7 frustrations. Please help.

I have folders containing audio files (mostly audio books) with completely irrelvant and stupid pictures on them which I cannot change!!! There is no customisation tab on the properties menu like Vista.

I now have an audio book based on picking up women with a strange looking woman on it and an audio book on Atheism by Betrand Russell with a big, fat gospel singer on the front because Windows Media Player thinks that it is an album by a singer which it isn't! Even the files have the same incorrect picture which I am helpless to change.

This is so damn dumb! Why can't I change the picture on the front? Am I stuck with it?

Any ideas?

Answer:Cannot Change Folder or file picture/icons!!!

I prefer all folders to be "general" rather than content related - a "pictures" directory is a hinderance to my style of work. Sounds like your situation is similar...here is how I set the directories and folders.

> I use the tried and true OLD explorer view where you see the tree display on the left.

> I use the tried and true OLD explorer view to include the Menu bar.

> Select the desired folder from the left nav pane such as Desktop>Libraries>Pictures.

> Right click on the folder and select Properties.

> Click the Optimize this library for: drop list and select General Items.

> Click Apply then click OK.

> From the Menu bar click View>Choose details... and select (or deselect) items as desired.
I hope that at least gets you started.

A number of C:\ folder icons are showing shortcut-folder hybrid icons...

1) [when] to my knowledge, these hybrid icons are new. But I wouldn't bet that big on my memory.

2) [maybe why?] to the best I can ascertain, they appeared at the same time a number of these files became locked (ownership and permission renewed now) and in fact, after the permissions changes, sometimes the lock icons turned to shortcut-folder icons, again to the best of my ability. (I was copying a large amount of data from a DVD to my hard drive when upon completion, the locks appeared in force).

3) I can do the ownerships and permissions, but [how] is there any chance of doing more than one folder or all at a time?

4) I am interested in either [why?] these shortcut-folder icons appeared, if they did or I am interested in general to know that I can overlook what has been staring me in the face for some time. (Imagine the possibilities...) Most of the still locked folders and other shortcut-folder icons are located WITHIN a recently un/locked shortcut-folder icon folder.

5) [How?] do I 'revert' the folder icons back to plain 'ole folders? if in fact, the mini shortcuts are erroneous and they shouldn't be in their hybrid form.

6) [Attempts so far] I searched this forum and elsewhere and tried to 'customize', 'revert', pick my own icon, and otherwise affect the folders' appearance as outlined with no change despite closing and reopening the Explorer. Which wasn't that surprising because I only... Read more

It happened suddenly, today. I have 4 shortcuts on my desktop which I use to quickly save files to the various folders. I selected the Icons to make them look good and distinguish between them. After an upgrade they displayed white overlays which add nothing to their usefulness and look cruddy. I hope there's a way to get rid of them.

They do not show in File Explorer or Total Commander thumbnail view, only on the desktop. I think they work like the shortcut arrows. Maybe they replace the arrows.

I recently signed up as an Insider and currently using 161014. If there is a more appropriate forum please let me know.

Addendum: I just made a shortcut to a program rather than a subdirectory. It, too, has the white blob. So it is a replacement for the arrow.

I like a tidy desktop. Spartan, even. Usually this means 3-4 icons, tastefully placed and theme appropriate, one being a folder with all sorts of other shortcuts in it.
But as I was shoving my "etc" folder into the corner and trying to find a nice folded page icon to make it look like there was something under the desktop, it occurred to me...COULD something be put "under" the desktop?

I'm not really talking multiple monitors or folders or anything, but is there actually any way to have your wallpaper and desktop shortcuts (with desktop position data intact) changed with the click of a button? And then changed back with another? In a sense like changing users, but without logging in and out or having separate users, really much more rudimentary than that.
The reason for this would essentially be to have my work desktop and personal desktop just a click away from each other for when I need a quick break. No closing of programs or halting of processes, just a quick little change to perk me up mentally.

I tried searching for something like this, but my google-fu is weak and couldn't penetrate the pages upon pages of tutorials for multiple monitors or changing wallpapers. It might even be a job of a gadget, I'm not sure...but I figured if there was any place people might know something like this, it'd be here.

Even if something like this doesn't exist, knowing how many "change desktop daily" sorts of things there are I'm sure this can't be prohibi... Read more

You can't do it in Windows without installing an extra utility from Microsoft.

Go to this page on Microsoft's site, and download and install TweakUI.exe

One it's installed, open it, then go to

Common Dialogs > Places Bar

Click on "Custom places bar" and then you get up the options to select what items you would like, and where you would like to place them.

I hope this helps.

I put about ten shortcuts onto my desktop, such as ones for eBay, Google, Amazon, etc.; however, they all have Edge's standard blue icons. This makes the whole group appear as a monolithic bunch of icons that all look the same and not so easy to read. Is there a way to change these desktop icons to the various websites' favicons, making them easier to see/read/use?

I think that you can right-click a shortcut, then choose "Properties," then click on "Change Icon." However, from there, I'm stuck, because it offers me the option of browsing to the icon I want, but I don't know how to get to any favicon that I might want.

It's easy to find those websites' favicons, using Google images, and I can then save them onto my desktop, but I don't know how to get them from there onto their relevant shortcuts. I think there is a cache, called something like "shell32.icon" or whatever, which holds icons, but I'm not sure if that's anything I want to mess with, because I'm fully aware that messing with those kinds of files can lead to disastrous results, such as the computer freezing up, the 'blue screen of death,' etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I got some annoying bugs on my Windows 7. The most annoying actually in the "apps and features" section won't remember its display settings (by date for example) and always reset itself as soon as i leave it. Second thing, which is totally new : shortcut win+L (lock session) doesn't work anymore, even after reboot, wipe caches, etc.. Not even a single idea how to fix it?

Last annoying thing is the icons gettings messed up some times after system's started and apps launched. I of course wiped all caches but it's still doing it. Of course i do a fresh install and all that is gone but i'd like to learn a bit... In fact i did a fresh install but a problem makes me avoid it :

On the old install, when i wake from sleep, wlan connects IMMEDIATLY. On the new install, it waits at least 10seconds before starting to search for the network... Hope you can help (for the display bugs mostly)!

THanks.

First, please forgive me if I have overlooked this issue in the many searches I have performed thus far.

I would like to know if anyone has a way to change all folder icons within a single folder to one specific icon without performing each one individually. I have over 1,400 folders within a master folder of which I would like to change the child folder icons. I really don't wish to perform this on a folder-by-folder basis.
This is not a Default Folder Icon Change inquiry. This is simply all child folders within a single master folder. I would also be interested if the change would affect all folders of a specific type. Windows 7 does allow the 'setup' of a folder to be distributed (details view with selected details, order, and column size for example) but the icon did not distribute as well.

Any suggestions?

Answer:Bulk Change All Folder Icons in Single Folder or Folder Type

First, a little bit of theory. What happens when a person sets a custom icon for a folder in Windows 7?
1. Attributes of a Folder change to Read-only (of the folder, NOT content!).
2. A hidden system file created inside that folder, which contains a link to the icon.

Thus, having such file as model, it is possible simply copy it across desired folders, and change attributes of those folders correspondingly.

Secondly, having this idea in my mind, I have put all of my little knowledge of Batch files together and created a script.
BEFORE script is started the following is needed to be done:
Master folder needs to be selected and a custom icon applied to it.

ONLY AFTER THAT
1. Script is placed inside that master folder and launched.
2. First, script checks if hidden system file with custom icon settings is there.
3. Secondly, script looks for subfolders and start changing its attributes.
4. Thirdly, script copies this settings file to all subfolders of current master folder, including all levels of subfolders.

For 100 folders it took about 21 seconds, for 200 folders with different levels of subfolders it took about 57 seconds on my laptop.

I have included remarks (comments) in the source code for better understanding what is going on.

UPDATE: Original file deleted. Script was not meant to be applied to system folders.

Hi,
I was playing with Virtualbox and decided to instal Win 7 32 sp1 Ultimate. And one of the things I noticed were that protected folders have a lock but on my host computer (the one running virtualbox) in the protected folders instead of the lock I get a shortcut.
This is what i get in the new windows installation:
And this is what I get on the same folder but in the host (the real) computer:

The host computer has Windows 7 64 sp1 ultimate so the only difference is the virtual computer has 32 and the real one 64, I don't think that affects the problem.
So, how can I get back o restore the locked icons?
Thanks

Answer:I've got shortcut icons instead of locked icons on protected folders

Have you changed permissions? Are you running under the hidden Administrator account or have UAC turned off?

Hello,
I have been running into a interesting issue with my two computers; one has Home Premium 64, and the other is 32.

When I right click on a folder, and click "properties", then go to the "customize" tab to change the folder icon, nothing happens. I have tried using the standard built-in System32.dll icons, as well as custom .ico files that I've downloaded. But it is a hit or miss. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

I thought maybe it was not refreshing immediately. But even when I restart the computer, the old icon is still there.

Any ideas?

Hi, as much as I didn't want switched from Windows XP to Windows 7. One of the things that I hate to this is the view of folders in Windows 7. I have all the icons from Windows XP, extracted and saved in one folder, I tried to change the icon of all folders in Windows 7 in this way: knock with right click on the folder, choose Properties, then go to personalize, choose Change icon, and from the folder where they are stored and retrieved my icons, choose the icon you want, then choose the option apply to all folders and, however the icon changes only the folder on which this procedure is carried out. Can anyone explain how and in what way to do so for all the folders in my entire system to change their icons all at once, and look at which the icon is set. I know that for this purpose, you need to modify and alter the registry of Windows 7 could you clarify exactly what and how to do it?

ThankYou.

You will probably say "Go into Folder Options, go to file types" etc. Well I need a way besides that. Both "File Folder" & "Folder" already have the icon I want set, however my actual folders still have the default Windows folder icon set.

So my question is, how do I change that? I looked in the registry and the right icon is set as the default Icon, yet still....

P.S I don't want to change the icon for just ONE folder, I want it to be system wide, and take effect on all new folders also.

The way I did it was by changing the default icons in the imageres and shell32 dll's using Restorator.

If you take ownership of those 2 dll's in system32 you can then replace them with the modified ones, if you upgrade to build 7260 x86 I can give you the dll's to replace the originals, also you will find the the download links for the blue icons in the custom theme thread.

Have done a search and could not see a definite answer to this.

I would like to change a couple of individual folder icons in W7. However, I do not want it to effect and be the default icon for the whole system , just an individual icon for one folder alone. The others can just stay as they are now with the standard W7 icon.

Is there any way to do that without causing problems with the default icon used by all other folders.

Any advice appreciated :-)

Open file properties; ( Right Click on the file ), click on "Customize", and then "Change Icon". Choose the icon you want to use.

Hello, I am hoping some of you bright minds will help me figure out a problem I am trying to solve. I am trying to manually edit my folder icons since iconpackager has failed to do so. I have edited the imageres.dll file using reshacker and have replaced the imageres.dlls in both the system32 folder and the systemwow64 folder. I rebooted then proceeded to clear my iconcache as well as deleting thumbs in disk clean up. After rebooting twice, not all of the folder icons appear with the changes I've made....
However, the libraries icon and favorites icon changed just fine.
I edited icons 3,4,5,6 and 162 with reshacker.

I've included an attached snippet from my documents, as you can see, the xwidget folder that is pink changed, but I do not understand why the others look like the default style...

Anyone have any ideas for a solution?
Thanks in advance!

EDIT

So I was able to make them change when I went to control panel > folder options and ticked always show icons, never thumbnails under the view tab... I'll keep this thread up if anyone else might run into the same issue...

I have some files and folders on a DVD. I open the DVD on my Windows 7 Home Premium.

1. Please see the attachment named 'File Icon'. Side by side are 2 movie files. Codec of the movie on the left is 'H264-MPEG4 AVC (Part10) (AVC1)'. The icon shows an actual picture of what is in the film which is very helpful to identify the contents without playing the film. The file on the right with the VLC Player icon does not show the content. Codec of this film is 'Flash Video (FLV1)'. Is there any way that I can get this also to show an actual picture from the film instead just the VLC icon?

Regards,

Answer:How do I change files and folder icons

Seems to me the file association is the issue, depends upon the file type, i.e. .wmv is associated with Windows Media Player. VLC can play a number of formats. But again, it depends upon the file type/s of your videos. Changing the extension can change what program you'll need but also can kill the ability to view a file. I've had success in changing a few .mp4 files to .flv but VLC still plays it.

I recently had to do a fresh reinstall of Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, & am now having problems changing any folder's image in the customary way (Properties >> Customize >> Choose File (to show on this folder icon)). After choosing & opening a file image, I "Apply" & click "OK". However, the selected image does not show up immediately as before (& as it should). I now have to add an empty "TEST" folder to the folder whose image I'm trying to change. Once this "TEST" folder has been added, the new image appears (sometimes I need to re-boot), & I can then delete the empty "TEST" folder. Furthermore, this method can be inconsistent, & a folder may revert to another image (especially in my backup drive). I have attached 2 screenshots of my Folder Options. Any help/recommendations to solve this maddening problem would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Answer:Unable to change folder icons

as its an image you want to show in the folder and not actually change the folder icon to a different one.
then rename the image inside the folder to "folder", it will show then ,or at least it should, this is only a workaround im afraid and doesnt really answer your problem, i wonder if rebuilding the icons cache may help

Hello and thanks for reading!

We have a multimedia production department, and I'm thinking on a system to mark the "ready for backup" folders. We create one folder for every project (and we can find all related documents, images, etc inside).

We can't change the folder name to mark it because there are some documents inside with absolute paths, this means that if you move or change the name of the folder, you have to relink too many things, and this is not an option.

OK I thought that it would be a good idea to mark the folder as "ready for backup" with a different icon, but it doesn't work on the network folders (only in local). I tried creating and customizing a desktop.ini file inside the folder but it doesn't work in our environment (SBS2008 server + NAS disks and W7/WXP clients).

I wonder if somebody have an idea to do it.

Thanks a lot,

Jud

Answer:[SOLVED] Icons on desktop have 'missing file icon' instead of shortcut arrow?

Well, the first thing I am going to ask is if you backed up your registry (You never should make changes to the registry - especially if its a never heard of online tweak - without backing it up) That's the short fix, if you did not back up your registry then please bare with me.

Please test the following:
-Double click "My Computer"
-Go into your C:// drive
-Enter the "Program Files" folder
-Go into any folder containing an installed program, and right click on the exe file inside
-"Create Shortcut"

If a shortcut is created within the folder without that ugly missing file icon, then you can just simply go and do that with all your other programs, drag the shortcuts to your desktop, and delete the previous shortcuts. (Then you can rename them something more straightforward, instead of shortcut to so and so just so and so)

If that did not work, I would try a registry cleaner. CCleaner is free and has a basic registry optimizer built in, though you could try a more specific program, such as a RegSeeker.

If none of those work, then please get back to me on it. (I'll probably have thought of another fix by then)

By the way, now that you mentioned those shortcut arrows, I'm getting annoyed at the ones on my desktop!

i start to get really weird problem lately...

the Explorer toolbar of windows 7 sometimes show me different icons only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, use..java? o_O

it show the icons of the last progrem i used, like if i will enter to Utorrent window, then i will see it icon on the next progrem i will try to launch like Windows defender.. (only in progrems that use admin rights, relate to windows, and use Java, games and etc not effect by that).

however when i restart my pc the problem is fixed.. till i open progrems like Jdownloader or progrem that use Java (i think... i not test it many times yet..), or wait really alot of time when the pc is on... there is a small chance that it come from some filters or codecs because i watch animes really alot and use CCCP codec pack...

I have had this issue for several weeks now & there is very limited info about it on the net, and what I have found about it hasn't resolved the issue.

Basically my external hard drive & my flash drive appear as folder icons in My Computer & not drive icons.

I am guessing that the virus is on my laptop and then transfers itself to any external media I connect to it. Then if I put that same external media into a different PC/laptop, it transfers itself to that PC/laptop too...

Does any one have any ideas on this one?

Hi AllSomething weird happened after the last Windows Automatic Update, any standard yellow Windows folder icon I had has changed from the small yellow icon that is standard, to the icon Windows uses when it does not recognize an extension, the black, blue and red Folder screen icon or whatever it is.Also, some other Icons also disappeared altogether, such as on the Start Bar, icons for functions such as 'Search', 'Run', 'Help and Support' and 'My Network Places' also went altogether, and were not replaced by another.I didn't think it would be a big deal, but it's amazing how much it slows you down when searching for folders, the yellow icon is imprinted into my brain. Not to mention using different computers for work etc, it's getting frustrating! I know I can right click "Properties" "Customize" and change icon, but the yellow folder icon isn't even an option when I do this, and in fact I only have 3 icons to choose from now - blue DOS screen, Note Pad, and the one is present now instead of the yellow folder icons.Running XP SP3. I have done some searching for this issue and it has been around, but no-one has ever found the solution on the forums I've read, anyway.Cheers,

Customising user folder icons has always been a bit tricky. All user folders apart from the desktop and contacts user folders can be changed via the customize tab in properties when the user folder is accessed from my computer (i.e. not from the desktop).

To customise the desktop and contacts user folders requires a registry change. For Windows 7 this is explained here User Folders - Change Default Icon - Windows 7 Help Forums, and the necessary .reg files are also provided. This method actually worked for me too in Windows 8. However, after the newest updates, the icons I had added this way have disappeared, and so has the customize tab which I had added via the .reg files available on the page mentioned above. Repeating the reg change would not make a difference. The newest updates must have changed something in the Windows 8 registry to that effect (through those updates all other user folders also lost the custom icon I had previously added, but I was able to easily restore them, as the customize tab of these user folders didn't disappear).

Hence my question: how to now change the folder icons for the desktop and contacts user folders in windows 8?

Since all my other user folders are customised in a particular style, leaving the default icon for the desktop and contacts folders looks a bit weird...

I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3. I was wondering if it's possible to change the folder icons for the "My Pictures, My Music, and My Video. When I click on the folders properties there is no tab for customize for these three folders like there is on the others. I just want folders without the music note, picture, or film strip in it. By the way, this is a very cool site! I use it often to find answers I'm looking for and it's been very helpful. I couldn't find anything on the folder icons, Thank you so much for your time!

Hey everyone! Long time no see!

Okay, so a friend of my dad told him that he used to see the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007 in a bigger font/size before switching to a new computer with Windows 7. Obviously, we all know that upgrading Windows won't change font sizes that are coded into independent programs, so I'm thinking that maybe his old computer was running at a lower resolution. Anywho, my dad's friend asked my dad to ask me this question, and since I don't use Office 2007 anymore, I need to ask you: is there a way to change the size of the folder icons and labels in the left pane of Outlook 2007, without changing the size of anything else?

Thanks for your help!

Answer:Change size of folder icons and text in Outlook 2007

Not sure about Outlook 2007 as I've been on 2910 for a while now but if you go to the file - options - advanced and check out the options for the navigation pane there should be a font button - change this to something more appropriate to your needs andthis will not alter the other panes

If would also appear that the icons expand to match your font choice

Hi guys,
I've recently attempted to patch my folder icons manually with Resource Hacker. It didn't work, in fact it had worked for some folders but most folders remains the same beige icons.
I got frustrated since every step seems correct, but anyways I decided to revert back to normal, by replacing the custom imageres.dll file with the original to both System32 and SysWOW64 folder, and deleting iconcache.db for it to rebuilt.
Most icons revert back to normal after that, but except the folder icons in the C:\Windows folder, where some of them are still showing up with the custom icon.
I've restarted, tried changing the icon and rebuilt the cache file so many times, I even restored to a backup point before the change is made, but still no luck.
I've taken ownership for the necessary files and have run as admin when necessary.

Any ideas why this is happening? and if anyone can provide some tips to successfully change all folder icons, I will be really appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Folder Icons didn't change back to default after revert customization

Here's the situation:
I've got this folder. In this folder are 643 sub-folders. I want to change the icon of all of those folders quickly, because doing it manually would be horrible.
Each folder has to have it's own icon. Not all the same one.

Currently the .ico's are in a folder with all the exact same name as the folders they need to be matched with. (if I sort by name, they'll all be in the exact same order, if that helps anything)

example:
Mainfolder/A/ needs to have icon "A.ico"
So I've been kinda searching around and it seems things like this can (or not) be done with a batch file, and the desktop.ini. Or something...

I'm not an expert in these scripty kinda things, so that's why I'm here (:
I hope I explained it well enough, and that I don't have to sit 3 days at my desk changing 'em all and be brain-dead afterwards.

Thanks,

Yar

If a file is saved on the desktop it is often not possible to change the icon associated with it. For example a pdf file usually has an Adobe Acrobat Reader icon which cannot be changed. However it is possible to change the icon if the file is saved elsewhere, for example in the Documents folder, and a shortcut is created on the desktop. Right click on the shortcut icon, click properties, click the 'shortcut' tab and then click "change icon".

Today I was on my laptop and when I closed my internet explorer I noticed a folder had changed to the icon that is usually used for unknown programs. When I looked I noticed all the folders in my computer now look like this and when you double click it goes to search instead of open. So now I have to right click and choose explore. I went to folder options to see if the icon had been changed but it was still set as the folder. I restarted my computer, ran a mcafee virus scan (nothing detected), ran microsoft anti spyware (nothing detected), restored my computer to an earlier point and it is still is not working correctly. Does anyone know why?? Thanks.

I have a Gateway M520 Laptop, Pentium 4 (2.8 GHz), 512 mb ram, Windows XP Home SP2

Help, I logged on to my computer this morning and the "normal" file folder icons are gone and replaced by the windows default icon. It is every one and in all sub directories as well. If you try to change an icon manually it won't accept the simple folder icon but will let you choose a different one. MS Word and Excel and other program icons are fine. It is just the windows folder icons that are all gone.

If you right click on the desk top and choose "new" and "folder" the folder icon is not the normal manila icon but the window icon that show up when you don't have an applicaiton installed. A white background with small computer in the middle.

Any idea how I get all the folder icons to return. I can't do each one idiviually as it too many and the default won't let me install.

Thanks, Steve

I have made in GIMP two .ico files for two file types that do not have any program or icon registered to them. they are .dls & .sf2, both of which are soundfont files. I have many programs that use these files. like SONY Acid using .dls. ModPlug Tracker also uses .dls. I have a midi converter that uses .sf2 and so does FL Studio. and Awave Studio uses all soundfont files.

TL;DR: how can I change the icon for all .dls and all .sf2 files on my system to the icon I created? Not just one .dls or .sf2 file.

Hi there!

I used many different file types each day, specially those related to image editors. I have many .psd and .ai files (documents for Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator). However, since I use other programs (GIMP and Inkscape), these files look pretty ugly. They are a white sheet of paper with low resolution GIMP/Inkscape logo. And that is awful

I think I did something with W7 like messing up with regedit in order to change that. I just want W10 to show those files with a proper icon file (.ico) I have in my computer.

Thank you very much!

Answer:How can you change icons for a specific file type?

Try e.g. Filetypesman (freeware) or Gunners File Type Editor (freeware).
These allow you to browse to and select an icon for each file type.. look for the rt click options.

I tried using this program as I was told to directly on the homepage of Google: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/12383/change-a-file-types-icon-in-windows-7/ but neither .dls nor .sf2 files are listed anywhere in that program. Many other unknown file extensions are listed in there but not .dls or .sf2

I found out how to do it. using the same File Type Manager as in the link, I go to Edit>New File Extension and type in .dls and .sf2 and change the icon from there. I thought I'd share my findings in case someone else is looking for an answer on a later date. Thanks anyway

In the Tools/Folder Options/File Types/Advanced menu options screen, I am unable to make any changes to my desktop icons. For example, my .htm icon is showing up as a standard unassociated icon. In the dialog box, it shows correctly as a IE icon, but I can't make them show up like that in any folder view. I also can't make changes to any existing ones.

Virus checking software is up to date (4/3) and a full system scan was just completed.
