simple question about wordpad, maybe too simple

Question: simple question about wordpad, maybe too simple

I was typing out a song, in wordpad, that I had written, which included letters above each line to show which chord was to be played at which time. I went to print the document and the printed page has the spacing for the chords off. I noticed this happened if you used either a different font or different size for the verse and the chords. To give you an exampe:

A--------C--------D
blah blah blah blah blah

would become:

A---------------C-----------D
blah blah blah blah blah

Obviously the simple fix is to use one font and size for the whole document, but out of curiousity, why is this happening? I played around with it a lot, and was always getting a printed page that had significantly different spacing that what was being shown on the screen, including print preview. I'm sure this is really simple for somebody, but I am not familiar with why it is happening.

P.S. I had to include the hyphens to illustrate my point because this wasn't handling the space issue well either.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: simple question about wordpad, maybe too simple

Wordpad doesn't have very advanced formatting options in its code. its a small step above notepad, which has only basic formatting (spacing) as a simple text editor. Different fonts have slightly different character spacing. since Wordpad is a pretty basic text editor, it doesn't have character spacing formatting in its code, and spacing is read from the font alone.

When simple text without much formatting is sent to the printer, the printer reads the font and outputs the spacing based on the font.

simply put, both the printer and wordpad interpret the font spacing differently.

I've been looking all around the internet for 2 months for my answer, yet I haven't been able to do this. It seems simple to me. Why can't I find an answer for this question...

How do you re-format the C drive?

It seems at least simple to me. That's all I want to so. I have two paritions, C and D. C is my system partition, and install Windows XP Pro on it. That's all. In XP setup, it will not let me format it, so to me in theory, I'm at a dead end. So I've installed XP on the C drive three times, all in the same folder, and now it has taken up 10 GB (why?) of space when it only should take no more than 4.

Answer:Simple question, not so simple answer, reformat C Drive

I have Windows XP Pro, SP.

A while back I asked if there was spellchecker addon for WordPad. I found out there wasn't. I was recommended a wordprocessor/editor. I tried it but I didn't keep using it. Now I want to use it but I don't have the program and can't remember its name. Can somebody please tell me what its name is or the name of another similar program?

Thanks,

Answer:Is there a simple replacement for WordPad

Hi, I don't know anything about this program, just looking at search results to help you, but it looks good and is free....

Then, there's this utility, but it is shareware but not expensive. Has a 7 day trial as well.

Another free one is Abiword- http://www.abisource.com/

That's a full featured and very good program.

I recently reinstalled Windows 2000 on my family's laptop here, so that it wouldn't run so sluggishly slow on Windows XP with only 256 MB of RAM. Now, I've run into a peculiar problem that's router based. I'm running my sister's system with Windows XP and this laptop on the same network at their apartment. However, the Linksys BEFSR41 4-port switch is assigning each computer the same IP address, causing conflict. Is there a way in the router settings to easily and manually assign each computer a separate IP address? I'm fairly confident that Cox Communications provides 3 IP addresses for each owner of their cable internet services.

The clock on my PC loses time, I have gathered from other discussions that the answer is to change the battery on the Main board. As a user and not a computer techy - will the removal of this existing battery destroy all the settings on my board (obviously I will take all anti-static precautions. Thank you in anticipation of a postive answer and a hassle free change of this battery. The board by the way is a K7VZA made by "AMR"

Answer:Simple Question - hopefully simple answer!

Yes you will loose the settings in the BIOS this shouldn't be a problem. May be a good idea to write them all down first.A better title to the thread would've made getting an answer even simpler!

This is truely a "no brainer" for most, but I'm baffled. Here's the deal.

I have Win XP (SP2) installed with IE 5.?

I've tried to install IE 6 in the past but was unable to because of difficulties at the microsoft update site.

My question is, what is the latest IE version that can be used with SP2 and could someone provide a link to the proper update page from microsoft? Thanks for the help

Hey, this is my first post here so I thought i'd make it simple.

I recently just bought a 500gb external HD and I just transfered all of my D drive(111gb) over to it. Now with my D drive cleared I want to install windows vista ultimate on my D, and keep my Xp on My C drive. So I'm asking the steps I need to take in order to Dual Boot my windows XP and my future windows Vista with both on differnt drives.

Answer:Simple question, want simple answer

This is fairly easy:

0 - Yes, step 0. Make sure you have all the drivers you'll need (motherboard, video, sound, NIC, etc.). Vista should recognize your motherboard/controllers. The rest you can store in a folder on your external drive.

1 - Shut down and disconnect your external drive

2 - Boot to your Vista DVD

3 - Follow the prompts, and when asked where to install, select the D drive. Double check your choice before continuing!

4 - Allow Vista to format it NTFS

5 - Vista will handle the boot loader (where you can choose on power-up which OS to go with)

For the most part, Vista will do everything.

May I add, there are lots of non-microsoft alternative wordpads that aren't compatible with windows XP or indeed win32 system.

Question: I'm just doing a very simple tune-up on my computer. I have not used the program HiJackThis. I have a the log file, but not well versed in reading the logs. I watched the forum and saw some members that were well-versed in this program. If you would be so kind, could you tell me if there is anything in my log that you would be concerned about?

Answer:HiJackThis. Simple Request, Simple Answer?

From the Do Not Post HJT logs sticky:

Special notes about posting HijackThis log files on MajorGeeks.Com
Note: This is not a HijackThis log reading forum. It is a malware cleaning forum, and there is much more to cleaning malware than just HijackThis.

Malware cannot be completely removed just by seeing a HijackThis log. If you need our help to remove malware DO NOT simply post a HijackThis log which will be deleted. You must follow the instructions in the below link.

READ & RUN ME FIRST Before Asking for Support

You will notice that no where in this procedure does it ask you to attach a HijackThis log. This is because it is embedded within our procedures. When you follow them properly, a HijackThis log will automatically be obtained from a properly installed HijackThis progam. And the log will be put into a MGlogs.zip file with a few other required logs. This MGlogs.zip will then be attached to a message. This in all explained in the READ ME.Click to expand...

Part of the reason is that you did not install HJT in a manner that would be of any use.

If you are concerned about malware, please do the above and attach the requested logs.

...but everytime I try to encrypt, I'm unable to access the internet.

Just set up a network in my parents' vacation home (they're here about half the time) and here are the specs:

Two desktops: Dell 4550, Dell 4600 (both about 4 years old) running XP
Router: Linksys WRT54g2
Modem: Motorola Surfboard 5101
Adapter 1: Compact USB Linksys WUSB100
Adapter 2: WMP54gx

Spent lots of time calling Bangalore yesterday (Linksys tech help) and was able set up WEP security, but it left me unable to access the internet. I've had to reset the modem twice now and go back to an unsecured network.

Any ideas about why this is happening?

Is there another way to encrypt, perhaps using software or freeware?

Is a bad idea for my parents to turn off the modem/router when they leave town? (It will solve the problem part of the time, but i'd prefer to have a secured network.)

Edited to add: I brought my laptop with me and have been using that to set up the network using a wired connection.

Answer:Just a simple girl, setting up a simple network

Did you enable MAC filtering when you set up WEP?

If you did you will need to add the MAC for each wireless NIC into the MAC table on the router.

Hey Guys,

I have been trying to figure out what makes an MPEG-4 file Simple Profile (SP) or Advanced Simple Profile (ASP).... I have no clue.

I know that Xvid and DivX use the ASP, but how do you know the difference between SP and ASP? For instance, how would a person create a SP video instead of an ASP video? What makes each type unique?

Thanks.

I accessed Sears.com for the first time in several months and now it puts the damn S logo on many of my webpages. Where and how is it directing the other webpages from my favorites menu to pick up that icon?:confused

Answer:Simple question (hopefully) for you

Hi

Where is the logo and is it on all your web pages? Can you post a screenshot as an example?

That sounds odd.

Try downloading CCleaner and cleaning out your system. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4191.html

another thing to maybe look at (not sure about this, but worth a try): If you are using IE (just going by your term 'favorites') click on Tools > Manage Add-ons > Enable/ Disable Add ons > see if you have any Browser Helper Objects that don't look right (sears maybe?)

Alright, I need some feedback as detailed as possible because I am in a sort of limbo right now. I have never built a pc before.Granted I don't post much, heck I'm not of much aid either but my questions are

Should I build a PC or Should I buy one already built?
Are all processors(dual,quad,i5,i3,i7) the same, regardless of the brand?
The same said question I ask of the motherboards. DDR2 or DDR3?
Oh and I am only interested in the tower If I decide to buy one.

My old PC Specs are
Compaq Presario SR1610NX
Mobo: MSI-Amenthyst MS 7184
CPU: AMD Sempron 3200 1.80 GHz
GPU: Nvidia Geforce 9400 GT
PSU: Apevia 500W <-- recently purchased.
1.25 Gb Ram
OS: Windows Vista 32bit Home Basic
500$ budget if I choose to build one(very unlikely but possible).
Now I have seen the techspot buying guide. I do not know what is stopping me from doing a build. It can be that I am too lazy to put everything together if i go for a build. Then again, it sounds so much simpler to just buy one, and yes I do want Windows 7.
I have a link to a PC of interest.
http://www.frys.com/product/6133279?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

I'm not a casual pc gamer, but i will game once in a while.
I'm looking for great performance, can this pc that the link shows give me that and some gaming? and in the future can it be upgradeable?
I welcome the Pros and Cons of both options from you guys, give me all you got.

Answer:One very simple Question

1. No not all processors are created equal; they are manufactured / built to cater for needs of different segments (price/performance range).

2. DDR3 is rated from 800-1600 mbps (which is double at the maximum, from DDR2); along with many other improvements in power useage/management etc. (you can find details by searching for JEDEC specs DDR2 vs DDR3). Since DDR3 is designed to run at higher memory speeds the signal integrity of the memory module is much more important though. Lastly, it should use about 16% less power than DDR2.

3. And I think you can build a better system than this one for about the same money, if you try to be bit less lazy

Here's what I would suggest at your budget:

AMD Athlon II X2 240 Regor 2.8GHz - $56.99
ASRock M3A770DE AM3 - $59.99
BFG Tech GS-550 550W - $49.99
A-DATA Gaming Series 2 x 2GB DDR3 1333 - $91.99
XFX Radeon HD 4770 512MB - $114.99
Antec Three Hundred Illusion - $61.99
HITACHI Deskstar 7200RPM 1TB - $79.99
Sony Optiarc AD-7241S-0B - $26.99

Total - $542.92
Source: Ritwik

That is one decent build IMHO, so I just got it here for your consideration & I think your current PSU should be alright with this rig; so you can deduct 50$ from price hence making it 493$; and also have the option of updating the rig to an Quad Core CPU later on.

Hello Mskiy, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might check to see if these tutorials may be able to help you with this. Be sure to look in the same areas in Group Policy to see if you have anything that is set to anything other than Not Configured. If you do, then it may be responsible as well.

Drive Access - Restrict or Unrestrict

Removable Hard Disk Drives - Allow or Deny Read and Write Access

There may not be too many programs around at the moment to take advantage of dual core but given time and the fact that laptops aren't too easily upgraded it's better to get the latest and best your budget allows , dual core will be better utilised eventually , and make sure you get plenty of memory . How can I get the MAC address of a pc that is hooked up to a domain and I actually don't know the user name and password to get into windows? You know, I can't do ipconfig /all outside windows?

So, what should I do? Does it show in BIOS in the network adapter description or something?

Safemode will still require a password.

Maybe I can use the guest account ? Or log in locally to the computer with no domain? But how do I do that exactly? It won't allow me actually. The network admin needs the mac address to remotly enable something...........Maybe he will just have to come himself.

Thanks

Question: Simple question

Hi there,
I just want to know if I can shut down, disable, turn off or kill (use whatever word you like) the Motherboard Temperature Sensors. Can I "unscrew it" from motherboard or can I just "tear it apart". Why I want to do that? Because my PC Wizard and other temperature watching programs show that motherboard temperature is 95 C; which of course isn't true. In BIOS all seems fine. I just want to destroy that sensor, 'cause of that system restarts very often under the thought that my motherboard "burns". Please just tell me how to shut it down. I know it may have bad sides but just tell me, I just want to disable it.

Thanks in advance,
Andrija.

Answer:Simple question

You should be able to open the PCwizard progam and
set the sensors you want to monitor.
http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php#directions
If you are using it to connect to motherboard monitor,
you will need to select the sensors in it.

Question: simple CD question

i went out the other day to get some rerecordable CDs and i was flooded with a range of all different types from CD-r to DVD=RW duel layer, in the end i managed to find out what everything was but the one thing that confused me most was, i have been told there is no difference between CD-R and CD+R, surely there must be a diference soemwhere!!
what is the + and the - for and what do they mean? is one better than the other?

Answer:simple CD question

Do you mean DVD-R and DVD+R?

yes there are differences, its like saying VHS and Betamax are/were the same!

DVD - & + are different writing formats that emerged and are still being argued over as to which is the best so these days to avoid any consumer confusion most manufacturers produce dual format writers that can write in both - and + ( but some writer can only write in minus if its a - drive so if you bought a + disk it woulnt work and vice versa )

CD types and by no means a comprehensive listing....

CDR ~ Write once
CDRW ~ Write and Erase many times

DVD-R ~ Write once
DVD+R ~ Write once
DVD-RW ~ Write and Erase many times
CVD+RW ~ Write and Erase many times
( These have a 4.7gb limit )

then you goto Dual layer DVD types which burn upto 8.5gb

Safe is relative, I am not positive, but pretty sure that most https sites won't store passwords anyway.

I should know this one, but I'm still learning.

Why is the Outlook Express folder opening when I start or restart Windows (XP), and how do I stop it?

And, how do I donate to this forum? I've recieved some very helpful assistance and advice here.

Thanks,
Santiago

Answer:A very simple question

Click...

START > ALL PROGRAMS > STARTUP

anything in there? - if you see a shortcut to OE in there then simply remove it.

Edit: If you click About TSF at the top of the screen (scroll up!) then there's a support/donations link there.

Question: Simple Question

Is it possible to run task manager as a service, so it won't be on the screen or minimized but it will be in the sys tray?

Answer:Simple Question

In Windows XP, Task-manager is already in the system tray running as a service. To get to it, just right click on the task bar and choose it from the menu.

If your Windows platform doesn't have this option in the system tray, you can do a search for the "taskmgr.exe" file. Then just drag & drop the one whose location is in the system32 folder to the "Quick Launch" folder (C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch). All you have to do then is click on the icon in the Quick Launch if your Quick Launch is enabled!

Hello. I currently own this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00213821 and i am thinking about doing an overhaul but still trying to use the case and psu. I am looking at http://m.newegg.com/Product/index?itemnumber=13-130-755 to replace my mbb. My main question is if i stick with this case and i use the usb3.0 header can i connect that to my existing front usb ports? If so will they now be 3.0 or would i be better off scrapping the case? Thanks.

Answer:Hopefully a simple question

No, USB3.0 headers use different connectors from USB2.0 headers.  Scrap both the case and PSU.  The PSU is old, not very good and will not have the rail weighting or connectors for a modern system.  Using it is only going to cause trouble. You would be much better off selling the full machine as it is for whatever you can get, then put this money towards the new parts.  There is nothing in that system that could be reused unfortunately.

Question: Simple Question?

I have a strang problem. I am running win/XP Pro SP2, I have two optical drives a CDRW and a DVD. Yesterday my CDRW started opening on it's own when I shut the drawer it would reopen. I shut down and rebooted it stopped opening for about 10 min. then it started agin. I went into device manager and removed drive. I rebooted and XP recognized the drive and I had no more problems last night. I rebooted this morning and was away from the computer for about 30 min. and when I came back I found the drawer open agin. Any ideas? Besides a ghost!

Answer:Simple Question?

While the paranoid will suggest a virus/hoax application (and they do exist) I would putit down to faulty hardware within the drive as a first choice.

Question: SIMPLE QUESTION!!!

Ok so for some time I've had to deal with this irritating pop-up I have to wait for, for me to install games. Eventually this gets very tiring as some programs make me wait as long as 50min just for the Admin Accept/Decline message comes up...so obviously I will lose my patience waiting and waiting and waiting until that message pops up.

Is there anyway that I can temporarily allow my computer to by-pass this wall so that I don't have to wait forever to install something?

thanks and reguards, Brandon

I didn't know where else to put this thread on this board if it belongs anywhere, but I'm sure someone here owns one and can help me out with this tiny tidbit.

I had never even touched a PSP before the other day. I just got a memory stick like 5 minutes ago so I was finally able to get into it via USB.

I bought it used on eBay. The guy already had a wallpaper and a theme installed (let's focus on the wallpaper; the theme is official but the wallpaper is a pic of his babies so I don't feel right having it on here, let alone simply not wanting it). I'm to the understanding that there is something like 4kb of internal memory on a PSP that can hold a single wallpaper and theme.. or something like that. I would like to delete the theme and overwrite/delete the wallpaper. But I cannot access it via USB; it only takes to me to the memory stick itself. Can somebody help me? Thx in advance.

Answer:PSP, not PC, but just a simple question

1)Put the memory stick back in the PSP and then turn on the PSP. 2) Then scroll over to Settings. 3)Then scroll down to Theme Settings then press the X button. 4)Scroll down to Background then press the X button. 5)Then select any thing there except Wallpaper then press the X button.

Hi,
I have a question about Windows XP Pro's ASR (Automated System Recovery), while I do know all about how to create one and how to restore in case of major failure, I want to know if by any way the backup created could be somehow compressed to save hard drive space.

As far as I know, I have searched through Backup's options and couldn't find a way to do it and the problem is that I can't do the backup anyway else (eg: WinRAR to create a compressed RAR file) since NTBACKUP.EXE is apparently the only program that can control the Volume Shadow Copy service to copy actively running files...

Is there any way to do it ? (ie: create a compressed ASR backup - or at least a compressed backup of the XP partition while running XP itself somehow ?)

Any suggestions ? Thanks ...

Question: Simple question

Hi,

In Outlook 2007 calendar I want to print an event that starts on 16th March & ends on 13th April. I would like this to print all on a single page which should be feasable as it's 29 days and the printed page for a single month has space for 42 days.

I've set the start and end dates in the printer settings but Outllok insists starting on the week that includes 1st and therefore spans two pages.

If Outlook can't handle this does anyone know of any other 3rd party apps that can handle 29 days on a single sheet of page?

Thanks in advance.

Basically what I want to know if there is any way I can find out if my motherboard supports letting me power up my computer with my keyboard(or other peripheral).

According to Dell's website I have a Planar motherboard on a Dimension 4400. I'm at work right now so that's the best information I can give.

Answer:simple question(I think)

Kinda puzzled. If having problems, yes you can power up a computer with just the keyboard hooked up with no other periphials. I take it you are having problems with the computer in question.

Question: Simple Question

Hi! My question is interesting, but not something that requires a lot of programming experience.

I have a pretty nice system up in my room with XP installed on it, and a few project programs (illustrator, Flash MX, etc.). I also have a TON of space (or so the records say).

THE PROBLEM:

The problem is, my programs are starting to glitch up, and it's becoming a real mess. I quit my recording session the other day because the program could no longer execute instant playback(something entirely new), and it gets really hard to develop games on Flash when the windows are so...well, messy.

HELPFUL INFO:

When I first got the computer, when I was only using about an eigth of the space on it, it came up with the window, 'you are running low on disk space' and such. Now I think I know what the cause may be, but fixing it when I'm not quite sure is risky.
(and also: My computer does not have an internet connection, but I did download a few Japanese fonts on a different computer and floppy transfered it to mine, if that helps any)

THE SUSPECTED CAUSE:

5,000$ worth of rock 'n roll CDs are currently being converted to mp3 on my computer. I've just converted about 17 CDs or so. It really seems that the more music I put on my computer, the more problems I find in using my programs. But I was starting to see these problems before I started using those music CDs. It may still have to do with space, though.

Question: Simple Question(s)

Have you ever had something that should be so easy to do. But, for some reason you have a complete brain freeze and the easy thing turns into a mind blowing experience??? I have reached that crossroad!!!!

I have read through some posts below concerning networking two computers. Just in case I might have missed something easy...but it did not help..

Win XP Home to Win 2000 Professional
AOL Broadband connection(cable)
Linksys 4 port router

Keep in mind that at one time this all worked great!!! I was able to browse both internet and files from either computer. Then one of their children got on one of PCs and screwed everything up...here are the symptoms...

Computer A is the XP machine
Computer B is the 2000 machine..

A browses the internet with no problems. The PC is shared out so that computer B can access any files located on computer A. Both of these PCs are a member of "WORKGROUP".....we obtain IPs automatically(of course)..

Now the odd things...Computer B cannot browse out to the internet nor can it see computer A. But, it can see the router. As stated, computer A can browse the internet...but cannot see the router(confused yet??? I sure am).

As many networks as I have set up, I cannot for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong. If I had this setup working before...why in the world can I not get it back the way it was??? I'm going out of my mind!!!

If anyone needs more information please let me know....

Thanks,
Ty

Question: A simple question

I want to directly connect my xp computer to a windows 98 machine and also (not at the same time though) connect to a lexmark lazer printer. Is this possible using a crossover cable?

Answer:A simple question

You can connect the two PCs with a crossover cable. It may be best to set the IP addresses manually, perhaps to something like 192.168.100.1 and 192.168.100.2. Make sure both systems are in the same Workgroup, too.

The Lexmark printer should have a parallel or USB connection available.

Can anyone tell me why this is?

Answer:A simple question, perhaps

If someone and someone12345 are not the same email addresses, then there is a chance that someone is an external domain, while someone12345 is a person with email address domain similar to yours (on the same exchange server setup).

Hope that helps.

Hi.
I have Xion tower with a stock PS. My harddrive is randomly clicking and 'losing its train of thought' so to speak (it stops booting up when that happens, stops doing what its doing when it happens in windows).

It did this a couple months ago, but i noticed that whenever it clicked, the LED lights on the case flickered. I replaced my two 80mm LED fans with one 120mm non-LED one. My system then continued to work properly until now. I'm assuming it was the power supply.

Now, it is doing the same thing again, only the LED is less noticibly flickering (i have to watch it carefully). This case's PS is known to fail after time. I'm also getting stop errors relating to data-reading errors (0xf4, 0x7A) periodicaly, presumably from when the HD 'skips'.

My question is simple (maybe): Before I spend 70 dollars on a new power supply, is there anything else that you think this could be? Thanks.

Question: A simple question:

I have an X2 processor. My mobo supports X2, but only with a better updated BIOS. So, I can't start up my new rig without the updated BIOS, and I can't update the BIOS without starting up the new rig?!?!? What do I do? I have access to another computer, but no substitute processor or anything. Is there a way of updating the BIOS without even being able to see my boot up? Because my monitor isn't getting any kind of signal from the computer, it just goes into standby as if the comp isn't on or something...

Thanks

Answer:A simple question:

No. If your machine doesn't POST, you cannot update the BIOS. I'd think that the only difference between a board that supports X2 and one that doesn't would be that one core is shut off.

Maybe not.

Only other option would be to remove the cmos itself, and contact the company for a new one with the updated BIOS, assuming they are willing to sell an updated one.

I wish to purchase a USB Hub and believe one of those that fits into the spare 3.5" floppy drive socket on the front of my PC case is favourite. However I don't really want to forego one of the existing USB ports at the rear of the PC to plug in a hub as this would result in wires trailing out of the front of the PC for permanently connected hardware such as the printer and internet connection. Are there any 3.5" Internal USB hubs that do not require plugging into an existing USB port? Or would I have to buy a USB hub card and have to fiddle around at the back of the PC to connect and disconnect things?

Answer:Simple USB Hub Question

Some motherboards have a USB connector on them, if you look in your manual, or post the make/model of your board, someone will be able to advise. What you are trying to achieve can be done from the Motherboard or from a PCI card, this will give you 2 extra ports at the rear and 2 at the front by using one of the drive bays, all wiring will be internal. j.

I have a bad hard drive (constantly re-boots machine, tested in another and does the same) and was curious if it's still possible to transfer (ghost, if you will) the info to another drive without complications? There is some valuable info on this drive that I need to recover and figured this was the best and most inexpensive way to go about it. Also, if transferring IS possible can it be done to an unformatted drive or would if have to be done to a drive with a matching O.S.?

I'm assuming it's the mechanics of the drive causing the problem however if anyone has any further imput I would be greatly appreciative.

I am running WinXP Home. Is there a way to default the "View" for the folders to what I want, and keep it that way?

For example: I want the View to remain at "Tiles" for my docs folder and "Thumbnails" for my pics folder. When I set it up that way, it will stay for a while, but for whatever reason at some point, usually within a reboot or two, it reverts back to the "Icons" view. Especially for the folders within the main folder.

I thought that Windows remembers the last configuration and keeps it as such.

Thanks.

What exactly is "Memory Dump", and how will setting it to "none" effect my computer?

Answer:Simple question

It's the contents of everything in your system's memory that gets *dumped* into a file before a crash. This is so you can later examine the file and debug the problem. If you set it to "none" then you won't receive a log of what happened. That's all.

Question: A Simple Question

OK i have a simple question, feel free to post your opinion

i am an avid gamer and really enjoy playing visually stunning games. However, in some games i experience low-fps when i play them, this is fixed if i turn off the sound... Is creative soundblaster 16 bit too weak to play the quality of sound most new games have? should i invest in a new soundcard? if so, which?

thanks in advance for your advice

Answer:A Simple Question

Hi there!

Basically the sound is what is slowing things down. you can TRY to resolve this without buying a new card...

Go into your Sound/Multimedia in Control Panel and under playback device, click the "Advanced" button. Lower the Hardware Accelleration and the Sample Rate and test your frams rate. If that doesn't help, then you'll want to get one of the newer sound cards on the market.

You can buy a SB Live Calue for under 30 bucks in alot of places. that would give you a decent card without spending too much money!
Good Luck!

Hello, this question will be easy to answer by someone with the right knowledge. I have been trying out two different Bittorrent download clients: ABC & U torrent. ABC shows the download speeds as KB/s and U torrent shows them as kB/s is there a difference? I don't need to know the technical stuff about bytes and bits (tried to understand that already) all I ask is, if one is downloading at say 40KB/s and the other at 40kB/s which is quicker? Thank You.

Answer:Simple Question regarding KB/s

Well, many, many people can't tell the difference between b and B, k and K so it may just be the ignorance of the people who wrote the programs..

Basically, k means the decimal kilo (1000), K means the binary kilo (1024). So, assuming that someone knowingly used these letters, 40.0KB/s is 2.4% faster than 40.0kB/s. See the .0? If you say just 40, then the 2.4% is rounded off, so there is no way to tell whether one is faster than the other

What you are seeing is the display memory.

Run dxdiag - but at an Elevated level -
START | Type cmd.exe into the start search box | right-click on cmd.exe up top | Select Run as Administrator | the same dxdiag screen will appear | Click on Save all information | Save report as text file | Then locate the text file you just saved and view the report.

You should see this number under the Display Devices area. In the first part of the report you will see system RAM and virtual memory figures.

Good afternoon,
I have been having a terrible time lately, mostly by asking questiona to various firms. A reply I have just had states that if I say to IE - in my case 9 - then certain things are remembered by my - or is it their? - computer. This is supposed to be instead of having cookies activated.
I have gone all round the icons on IE9 - at least twice - and can find nowhere either to activate cookies or to make particular sites into 'trusted websites'. I know I am being thick and stupid and there must be a way of dealing with both of these - especially 'trusted websites'. I would be very grateful, therefore, if someone could take pity on me and tell me how to do such simple things.
Many thanks in advance.

Answer:Simple IE9 question?

My HD light is constantly on and when I open certain programs it take a very long time to actually start up. The HD light is practically on from start up of the computer and the startup time is very long. Is there any1 that could shed some light on what's happening with my HD?

I have a MSI-GX630 a 250GB Western Digital HD. If u need any additional info let me know.

Answer:Just a simple HD question really

I would first try defragmenting your computer. It sounds like your hard drive is doing a lot of thrashing.

Question: simple question

if microsoft security updates, and finds a new def, why does that show up as an optional update? shouldnt it b a recomended update? they usaly r,

Answer:simple question

Hi jasond19,

I checked my own update history for Microsoft Security Essential definitions and found some to be recommended and some to be optional (and there were more optional than I had expected). I'm not certain why - perhaps it has to do with the severity of the malware involved in the new definitions or whether or not it's a minor update to a reasonably good existing definition versus a major change to the definition or the addition of a new one. Frankly, I honestly don't know but I install all such updates whether recommended or optional (and suggest you do the same) to keep MSE as current and up-to-date and effective as possible. EDIT: See Richard's response below, that's the difference between the two and I imagine it is determined by Microsoft as I just explained.

I hope this helps even if it isn't a definite answer but more like an educated guess. The main point is that it is best and recommended to install all MSE definition updates no matter how they are classified.

Good luck!

Question: Simple question

Ok, so I built my new pc today, but when I installed xp and formated the hd and everything I accidentally had my external hd plugged in

so now my external reads as C: and my actual hd as E:

luckily xp wasnt installed onto my external but it was installed on my pc

my question is, how do I make it to where my actual hd is the C: drive again and then the things i plug into it are different ones?
*edit*
no one can help me with this?

Answer:Simple question

Reinstall XP to avoid more confusions. You can change drive letters but I think reinstall it better.

Is there a way to uninstall Windows media player in XP?

Answer:Maybe a simple question.

Don't think it can be uninstalled. You can make The "classic media player" the default though:

From tweakxp.com

1. Click on the Start button and select Run.
2. Type "mplayer2" and click OK. Now you have the original Media Player loaded.

If you want to make this the default media player follow the directions below:

1. When the classic Windows Media Player is running, click on the view menubar and select options.
2. Then click on the format tab and choose which formats you would like it to open by checking the box.
3. Click OK, now all of the formats you selected will open with the classic Windows Media Player.

Hey you guys

I hope this is the right place to ask this question... but anyway... I was just wondering... Which way does my heat-sink fan have to blow, in or out? I assume It's out... It's just with this old computer I have... I think it's blowing in... But then again it has been on for over 3 weeks... So I'm not quite sure. Sorry for the stupid simple question, It's just I always tend to forget these little things. haha

Thanks you guys!

I have a Gigabyte 7870 graphics card. The specs read that I have a DVI-I (dual link). There is a cheap QHD Monitor I am shopping. The monitor specs read DVI-D only. Will my graphics card work?

Answer:Simple DVI question?

As long as you have a dual link DVI cable, yes.
