Files in one folder on Ext.HDD don't show - not hidden

Question: Files in one folder on Ext.HDD don't show - not hidden

My ext.HDD don't show content of one of folders. It's not hidden! It start playing movies inserted in it when I try to play this folder with VLC player, but that is all what I'm able to do with it. I tried to check disk for errors bot none was found, have anyone idea what could be wrong? Thanks in advance Michal

Preferred Solution: Files in one folder on Ext.HDD don't show - not hidden

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Files in one folder on Ext.HDD don't show - not hidden

And we should play 20 questions as to WHICH directory??

Hello,
In 'folder options' the action of 'show' and 'don't show' hidden files have got interchanged.

So, when I select 'don't show' hidden files are shown, and vice versa.

How to get this back to normal?
Thanks!

Hey Guys, I cannot find a soultion to this problem. I was using my desktop like normal then an error came up saying that there was a hdd failure, and that i needed to scan for errors. all my files disappeared and only this error would come up. There would be hundreds of the same msg spamed on my screen. I scaned my hdd for errors using my Bios/Advanced options and no errors came up. I decided to take out the hdd and put it into my External Hdd bay to hook up to my laptop to extract the data off it.

When i hooked it up to my laptop it showed up empty. I went into folder options and clicked on show hidden files and folders. Everything came up but it was grey/transparent. I then copied the files to another hdd for backup.

Then i formatted the hdd and put on a fresh new OS. Id like to mention i have a second internal drive that i use for backups but it wasnt backed up recently when this issue happen so i had to take out the main drive and use it as an external to back up onto another external drive.

so then when i click on my second internal drive after the reinstall of the new OS it shows empty i have to go in and show hidden files and folders.. now they show again transparent. also i plug in my external to get the recent back up and all those files are still transparent when i move them to my desktop that is freshly OS installed they are still grey/transparent and i have to keep the show hidden files and folders to view them.. so its all my music, pics, documents etc th... My dad is working on a video of our holiday. Now he riped some music files from a CD to MP3.His OS(windows XP Pro SP3) is in Dutch. But for some strange reason the Windows media player would only install in English.now the problem is that windows media player riped the files to My music. In dutch version it's "mijn muziek" so it made a new folder.BUT: the folder isn't showing?!I know it's there cause when we search for the music it does find it at location D:/Johan/My music. But when he tries to navigate to that locating in windows explorer the My music folder isn't showing. I've checked the box of showing hidden files, exc. it's still not showing. When I use Firefox I can navigate to that location.Anyone knows what it might be? It's a really strange problemAnd as the video editing prog uses windows explorer I can't navigate to it to add music to the vid. And I also can't type the location, It does work in the normal windows explorer when I just type the location. but that build in one in the editing prog doesn't allow you. Thanks in advanceJonas

Hello! As i said in the topic, i'm missing the "show/hide hidden files" checkbox in folder settings. Most people suggest editing the registry key for it (at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advan ced\Folder\Hidden] ), but i don't have "Hidden" in the "Folder" directory of my registry. If you have any ideas how to fix this without reinstalling windows, it'd help a lot. Thanks in advance guys, i see that you are doing a very good job here.P.S. Found a fix after all (download http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/wp-conte...dersettings.reg , add to registry and then follow directions from any forum). Thanks anyways :)

Hi,

I am guessing this will be either incredibly easy and I am missing something, or incredibly difficult to achieve.

But what I am wanting is to setup my system so that one partition has the ability to view all of the hidden windows files and folders and also hidden system files.

However at the same time for none other partitions on my PC to have this ability.

I can set this up affecting all paritions but there are some that I do not want this feature on.

I know I can laboriously keep switching it back and forth on the drive I want but I would not like to have to do this unless absolutely necessary.

So does anyone know any method that I can achieve what I am wanting.

Thanks
Anthony

Hi, guys.

After my pc has been infected by the "bagle prague" (hldrrr/wintems/flec006/srosa) i got cleaned by a software called Regrun. But the malwares have left some problems on my pc. The main problem is : In Control Panel / Folder option / View, i can´t find the options related to "show hidden files". In this forum there is a solution already posted, but it didn´t solve my problem.
The member says to go to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden]
and change the value into "group" My problem is : I do not have this last folder in the registry line ("hidden").
I mean, there is [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder] and in this folder ("folder") there´s no "hidden" folder. So I can´t change the value of "hidden" ´cause there´s no "hidden". Help me please, thanks.

In Appearance Files View, clearing the 2 buttons to reveal hidden files does not allow access to, for instance, C documents and settings, which has a padlock next to it, and others.

I had reinstalled the OS from within the machine and uninstalled any junk such as games etc. Have Avast free, super antispyware, Spybot, all of which find no threat Have run Kasperski one-time virus removal tool and; no threat. Running Winaso registry cleaner some time ago revealed 500 odd registry errors that were fixed and a subsequent run some time later revealed few problems. Running Winaso again yesterday discovered hundreds of errors again.

Kaspersky seemed to have trouble getting past; PE_Patch.Juba, and Googling suggests there may be something hidden in there.

This machine runs well enough but Firefox not responding, and slowness on internet activity are symptoms.

Do I have a virus?

Regards, DH.

Answer:Show hidden files that remain hidden

Welcome to the forum.

The "Documents and settings" folder has been obsolete since Vista. You should be using the "Users" folder". The "Documents and settings" folder is just a link maintained for compatibility with old software. Windows Explorer will never give you access by this route no matter what you do.

The "System Volume information" folder has special protection, even from an admin account, and should not be accessed unless you really understand what you are doing.

Registry cleaners are more trouble than they are worth and should be avoided. The validity of the errors found is often questionable. Many will find errors after a clean install. Others will find many errors and supposedly correct them but after another scan it will find the same errors. They have numerous pother problems as well.

Hello:  I wanted to delete every fragment of AVG TuneUp, and thought I had done so, both with manual means and via the tool they claim removes everything.  I ran a scan recently to check if all my stuff was up to date, and voila, a component of AVG is still there.  Furthermore, I ran a FRST scan to see where it's located and it's in a hidden folder (not cool). Tried to research how to unhide it and nothing works.  I don't want to venture into FRST fixlist territory or the registry because I don't know what I'm doing.  Thanks for any guidance.   Windows 8.1 by the way.

If the FRST and Addition texts are needed, I'll load them.

hi ,

I am facing a strange problem in my windows 7 PC now. Yesterday I made one folder hidden in my F:/ drive. Today I want to un-hide it. I went to "Folder and Search Options" >> View Tab and then "Show hidden files and folders". Then I applied and OK the changes. Still I don't see my hidden file. The F:/ drive shows that I have 7GB of data in it. But it shows a folder of 98MB only.

Please help. I am stuck up here.

Answer:How to show my hidden folder again after I hide it?

Try opening Windows Explorer as an administraitor, or use another file explorer such as WinRAR, which is unaffected by Windows Explorer settings such as hidden files. If you still do not see any files, then prehaps your memory device has been corrupted and you have multiple 'bad sectors' on your device (assuming its flash-memory based)

I tried to use my folder option to view the hidden folders but it will automatically uncheck both show or do not show hidden folder and ended up hiding all files again.

I managed to show them back by using regedit by following some guides by setting the value of Hidden and ShowSuperHidden to 1.

May i know are there any method to clear of this problem and showing the hidden folder again by using the normal way. I find it troublesome because if I checked the folder options then the value of Hidden in regedit is reset to 0 again..

Hold the Flag key down and tap R key, copy and paste the directory path for that folder in the run box, hit OK, it should open the hidden folder for you.

C/Program files/Winsim/Data/Backup1

You may have to un-hide protected operating system files to see that folder in Explorer.

Update your SevenForums System Specs

Your Profile | Edit System Spec (left-hand column)

To gather info, use Speccy (my favorite) or SIW or System Info

In the System Manufacturer Block, enter:
Manufacturer and Model and
ADD the word laptop, desktop, netbook or tablet.
For example:
Toshiba Satellite L305D notebook.

Provide full windows version info, for example:
MS Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64-bit

Use the ?Other Info? block for Optical Reader,
Mouse, touchpad, wifi adapter, speakers, monitor, etc

Scroll down and click on SAVE CHANGES.

You will find that in Speccy, you can select info from the display
using your mouse/touchpad and then paste that info into your specs.

SIW is a marvelous program, but the free version does not offer
this capability.

Answer:show hidden files folders (exclude files)

If you like, you could use the context menu from either step 2 or 3 in the tutorial below to quickly toggle to show or hide all hidden files when you like. This way you see them all when you want to, and none when you don't.Show - Hide Hidden Files - Add to Context Menu

Hello all!

I'm having this weird problem in XP. I backed up a 2gb thumbdrive and zipped it up by winrar. The contents were a total of 1.40gb. When I view the zipped files through any compression program (winrar, 7zip, etc.), I can see the files and folders inside. But the weird part is, when I extract them, I can only see a few files and 1 folder available (I have multiple folders in the archive). Visibly, it showed only 200mb worth of files extracted. But when I right-click the folder in which I extracted the files to, it showed 1.40gb. I then thought files were hidden. When I clicked to show hidden files, still nothing. To make sure the "show hidden files" was working, I checked c:\windows folder and happened to see hidden files, while the folder with the extracted files still showed nothing. I did a virus scan and spyware scan on that specific folder. Nothing was found. But still, invisible files. How do I solve this?

I hope my explanation wasn't too confusing. I had this problem for months already.

So, as what the topic title says, I can't show/view hidden files. I tried doing the "Folder Options->View->Hidden Files and Folders->Show hidden files and folders", and still, it didn't work. Well, it partially did, but I could only see one folder showing up when in fact there are plenty of folders hidden. I don't know how or why my folders suddenly became hidden (I think it's because of this autorun virus which I believe I deleted already).

Please help me. I'm not really good at these things, so please describe what I'll do in layman's terms. Thanks again.

Question: Show hidden files

As an administrator, I thought I was telling Windows to allow me to show hidden files for all files under a given user.  Turned out I made them hidden.

Questions...

How do I view hidden files.  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/show-hidden-files#show-hidden-files=windows-7 doesn't seem to be correct as I do not even see the typical "Windows" start icon.

The user has done nothing, and I have all their "my docs" backed up.  Should I just remove the user (and presumably the files will be removed) and start over?

Thanks!

Answer:Show hidden files

Hi again Notion
There's a difference between hidden files and system files. To view hidden files, you need to check Show hidden files, folders and drives in the Folder Options. From there, if you want to see the system files you need to unchecked Hide protected operating system files (recommended). Then you'll see every files and folders on your system.

I don't think so, but maybe.

A shortcut on your desktop to folder options would be just as easy.

Do you have administrator privileges?Post a Hijackthis log so we can see if anything is blocking access..Download and rename HijackThis (HJT) Double-click on HJTInstall. Click on the Install button. It will automatically place HJT in C:\Program Files\TrendMicro\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe. Upon install, HijackThis should open for you. Close HijackThis and rename it. Go to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.exe Right click on HijackThis.exe and select Rename. Type in sniper.exe and press Enter.Right-click on sniper.exe and select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut)From the desktop open Hijackthis. If using Windows Vista, Right-click and Run As Administrator.Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button Hijackthis will scan and then a log will open in notepad. Copy and then paste the entire contents of the log in your post. Do not have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required..Although we have renamed Hijackthis to sniper, we will still refer to it as Hijackthis or HJT.

Hi everyone,

Need some help with an interesting problem I'm having. I'm currently using a laptop with Windows XP installed. Both the choices for Show Hidden Files and Folders options are on for Folder Options. So, currently I can't see any of the hidden files. I included a screenshot of the problem.

Any idea on how to fix this? Maybe modifying a registry entry? Other buttons seems to work fine, except for the above mention problem. I tried to click on Restore Defaults, and the defaults are all restored except for this one.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:Can't show hidden files and folders

Greetings zentana01, and Welcome to TSF!

For you to be able to 'see' the hiddens system folders, you will need to check the box marked "Display the contents of system folders".

Do this and they will be visible on your C: drive.

Windows? has this box unchecked by default, as it is considered to be 'dangerous' for the uninitiated to be tampering with the system folders, in case one is accidently deleted, which could render the O/S inoperable.

Hopefully this answers your question; if not, feel free to post back with any other queries/concerns.

HiI wasn't sure whether this was a general Windows problem, or a possible malware. I'm guessing the latter:I am a student at University, and about two days ago when logging onto a PC in the labs, I noticed a folder called 'desktop.exe' on the desktop (a folder, not an executable). I didn't bother with it, except to notice that it looked odd, and I plugged in my flash drive. Windows recognized and labeled it as the H drive. I had My Computer open and was browsing through my files, when I noticed a folder was generated in the root directory of my flash drive, called "H.exe". Unfortunately I was in too much of a rush to consider it, and the folder disappeared (it was probably set to 'hidden').I immediately thought my flash was infected with someone's homemade malware, but I had no choice other than to plug it into my laptop at home to do some work. I had almost forgotten about the problem, until I tried viewing hidden files and folders and found the "Show hidden files and folders" option remained unchecked no matter how many times I repeated its selection. Incidentally, on reading your tutorial http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/how-to-see-hidden-files-in-windows/, I found that "Hide protected operating system files" also does not remain unchecked when I select it.I have no problem other than the irritation of not being able to see my hidden files/folders. I have not noticed any folder called "C.exe" or such like on my laptop, thoug... Read more

Answer:Show Hidden Files And Folders?

Mod edit: New topic has been merged with the original. Please stick to the original topic--do not start a new topic after five days, rather just post a link to the one that is pending. PKI have reason to believe this is a malware problem, not a general Windows problem.I think I picked something up from my flash drive while at University. My hidden files and folders wont show when I tick the appropriate box (in folder options), and when I open my hard drives in My Computer, it opens them in a new window (which is odd) and tells me that "IEXPLORER.exe is attempting to access the internet".I also cannot 'view operating and system files' because the box remains unchecked. Please check out my log file below. I have this strange thing happening. I'm using Windows XP. In Windows Explorer, in the Tools, Folder Options dialog box, when I select "Show hidden files and folders", then click Apply and OK, the hidden files and folders are not shown. When I go back into the dialog box, the option is not selected anymore. Instead it reverts back to "Do not show hidden files and folders".I quickly searched online and people are saying its a virus. I scanned the PC with Avast Antivirus, Eset Online, Trend Micro Housecall Online, Defender, AVG Anti Virus, Spybot, Ad-aware, Super Antispyware, Rougeremover, Panda Online, SDFix., Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Deckard's System Scanner. Besides tracking cookies, Avast was the only scan to find something. I used the "Delete" option when I was asked what to do. After the scans, the problem still occurs.I posted the Avast and Hijack this log below. Hope you can hlep. Hello:

I have a malware problem and am trying to follow the steps in the Read an Run me First thread.

However, I can't get my PC to show the hidden files. I had previously posted this problem under the "software" category and I was offered a script to fix it, but the problem persists.

My question is, do I continue with the following steps of the Read & run me first or do you have any suggestion on how to tackle this.

What happens is that I do check the "Show hidden files" option, then apply, close the window, and when I check back, it is again "Do not show hidden files..".

Thanks

I am trying to see if I have a program called regedit.com in my files, but it only shows if hidden files show, and when searching it does not since when I search hidden files are not searched.

Answer:Hidden Files Will Not Show While Searching

when I search hidden files are not searched. In order to search for hidden files, do this:Click on Start, Search, All files and Folders Make sure under look in you have Local Hard Drives selected. Then scroll down and expand the More Advanced Options. Make sure there is a check mark by Search hidden files and folders as well as system folders. If there isn't click on the little white box to put one there. You might want to put a check by Search Subfolders as well. Your search results will now include hidden files and folders.Orange Blossom

I have a file that I would like to have hidden from casual view, (nothing illegal or disgusting, just some important serial numbers) however, even though I have checked the box on the file properties to make the file hidden, it is plainly visible on the desktop! I am currently running SP2, and the only recent changes I've made recently were to add 1g of ram and upgrade graphics cards from ATI Radeon 9550 to Radeon Diamond X1600 Pro 512MB AGP. I would just delete the file, but I would like to have a backup in case I lose the disc I have this info saved on.

Answer:Hidden Files That Show Up On My Desktop

go to control panel --> folder options --> veiw tab --> check : do not show hidden files and folders.
of course anyone can reverse this process so a third party encryption software is safest.

Hi,I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed! This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world. That's why I want you to install one first!!* Please install Avira Antivirus: http://www.free-av.com/This is a free Antivirus.Perform a full scan with Avira and let it delete everything it is finding. Then reboot. After reboot, open your Avira and select "reports".There doubleclick the report from the Full scan you have done. Click the "Report File" button and copy and paste this report in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog. Then we'll start from there, because it really makes no sense otherwise that we clean this up manually if an Antivirusscan is not present which should be able to deal with most and prevent further reinfection.

I have two main issues.

I get a dos command box that opens up periodically and closes itself, and I can't show hidden folders/files.

The facts are these:
1. I have full admin permissions
2. When I try to show hidden files/folders and uncheck "hide system files and folders" and click ok or apply, nothing happens. When I go back to the folders options again, they are both back to the where they were.
3. When I try to run DSS, it crashes right after displaying cleaning up files.
4. I have uninstalled the ServU program (FTP program).

I need to show Outlook Express 6 hidden files *.wab and/or *.dbx. This app shuts down all the time. Encountered a problem, must shut down. It has something to do with the Address book. I deleted all contacts & it worked again but only temporarily.

When I went to Tools View Folder Option & checked "show hidden files & folders" & uncheck "Hide system files (recommended)" then pressed "Apply" & "OK", I went back in and the option went back to "Do not show hidden files & folders".

Help.

Why do you need a shortcut? Why can't you just go to Folder Options > View > and pick Show Hidden Files and Folders > Click OK.

Answer:Can't show Hidden files and folders

Hi,You are dealing with a flashdrive infection.I understand that you need help in order to get rid of the malware that is present on your system - But you need to help us first..I notice that you never scanned with an Antivirus previously before starting this thread - because you don't even have an Antivirus installed!

Hello All,

I would like to remove the 30 or so files that are now showing on my desktop since selecting to "Show Hidden files"

They are all old excel and word documents but not sure if removing them would cause an issue

What are they/how are they created?

I'm on Windows 7 Home Premium x64 and Office 2007

Thanks!

Answer:What are ~$ files that appear on desktop when hidden files show

As far as I'm aware they are desktop .ini files that are written to the desktop whenever you make a change to the file so that the file/folder remembers the change.

If you delete the .ini file it will return to its default settings.

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001060.htm

Is there any particular reason why you want to show hidden files? Obviously, they are hidden for a good reason.

Try this workaround if you insist on showing hidden files:

Enable Show hidden files, folders and drives but make sure that Hide protected operating system files (Recommended) is checked.

This will keep the desktop.ini hidden while showing other hidden files.

Hello friends,

I am in a bit of a bind. I simply clicked the "show hidden files" option on my C:/Users folder. Inside of 20 seconds, my libraries are all rearranged and none of my files are where I put them originally. They have seemingly vanished.

I downloaded ShadowExplorer and thankfully confirmed that I can still open my files when I refer back to an earlier restore point within the program, but when I go to restore the files, they don't go back to where I send them. I don't know where my files are, nor how to access them outside of this ShadowExplorer program.

I did try a regular 'ol Windows system restore, but those don't affect files, so the problem remains. Anyone have any idea what the hell I did and how I might go about fixing it?

Thank you immensely for your consideration.

Answer:Show hidden files --> Files now missing

Hello Snapdragon, and welcome to Seven Forums.

If you have not already, see if checking the "don't show hidden files" option will revert them back to how you had them before.

Double check the libraries to make sure that the folders you had included in them are still included.

In addition, see if setting each library to View -> "Sort by -> Name", "Group by -> (None)", and "Arrange by -> Folder" may reveal them.File and Folder Arrangement - Group by - Sort by - Arrange by
Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Hello:

As I wanted to enable the "Show Hidden Files" option in my Windows XP SP3, I realized the option is completely gone.

When I click in the Tools tab in Windows Explorer Menu, where I used to find it, it shows me completely different options: "Map Network Drive", "Disconnect Network Drive" and "Synchronize". "Folder Options" is no where to be found.

Please advice.

Answer:Show Hidden Files options disapeared!

Did you do this?:

1. Close all programs so that you are at your desktop
2. Double-click on the My Computer icon
3. Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options
4. After the new window appears select the View tab
5. Put a check mark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders
6. Under the Hidden files and folder section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders
7. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types
8. Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files
9. Press the Apply button and then the [OK[/B] button and shutdown My Computer
10. Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.

PS: Only do step 8 if you wish to see also the protected hidden system files!!

You may be able to roll this back with a system restore, but choose a date before the infection. This will not affect your files, but it may affect installs and updates. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

I used a program called "free hide a folder" to hide some folders and files. I later thought I deleted those hidden files, but yesterday, while doing a virus scan I noticed that the virus scan was scanning over 15 gigs of files I had deleted. Yet when I slect "show hidden files" they do not show up. Yet if I change the main folder to "hidden" it changes 15 gigs of files that are not supposed to be there. How do I get these specially hidden files to show again? I tried using the "free hide a folder" program but it won't let me unhide these files. Are there any tricks to unhiding these kinds of files?

OK, it?s again about this "Show hidden files and folders" issue.1. Hidden and protected operating system files and folders are not viewed.2. I go to ?Folder Options\View? and check the "Show hidden files and folders" radio button and uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files" checkbox, click "OK", but no effect takes place. When I close the window and go there again, it is in the same condition as before: "Do not show hidden files and folders" radio button and "Hide protected operating system files" checkbox are checked.3. I learnt that this is caused by virus or so. The workaround, according to advices in I.net, is to go to regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL and set the value of "CheckedValue" to 1 instead of 2 or 0...Now check this out:First of all, when I change the value, wait a couple of seconds and update (F5), it changes back to 2 again. Prior to changing this value, I end ?Explorer.exe? process form ?Task manager\Processes?, change the mentioned regedit value, and then start ?Explorer.exe? from ?Task Manager\File\New Task? again. This time when I refresh (F5) in regedit, all is cool and the issue is gone, I can view the hidden and system files now using the enablements described a... Read more

Hi
Last night due to email problems I needed to access some hidden files in appdata so I ticked 'show hidden files' , and left it running over night as it looked like it was going to take some time. This morning the files are still hidden, and on a restart my task bar has completely frozen, programs are crashing when I open them (photoshop, Firefox ) and generally Windows10 is unusable. I've tried to restore windows to an earlier point but when I finish the process it says it has failed, and no files have been changed.
Any idea on how trying to 'show hidden files' could have caused so much damage? And how can I get it all working again?
Frances

Answer:'Show Hidden Files' has damaged windows 10

No idea unless something has changed/deleted some file(s). Those are hidden only from user's sight but system and programs can still find them. Probably just a coincidence. Most of them are also protected so you couldn't have changed/deleted them even if you wanted to.

What exactly is it that you're trying to accomplish? Are you trying to run CF unattended or are you trying to modify its code? If so, you should direct your question to the tool's author as we do not discuss its inner workings on the forums (at his request). Sounds to me like you're asking about scripting, and possibly including CF in, another reason to direct your queries to him. The settings you mention are in the registry. You'll have to find which key, and which command you could use to modify them.

I'm using Windows XP Professional SP3 and I'm having trouble with the 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' under Folder Options. I suspect it's caused by a virus cause I've never used the 'Hide' option before on my files. Now, apparently I can't access 35 gigs worth of files on my external hard drive, simply because I can't find them. I'm using BitDefender Total Security 2009 as my antivirus software.

Here's what I've done so far to fix my problem. I've toggled with the registry in the 2 ways described below:

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced
Change 'Hidden' value to 1

- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Folder\Hidden\SHOWALL
Change 'CheckedValue' key to 1

But no matter how many times I changed the values, they would always revert to the ones before.

Having said that, can anyone help please?

Have you tried using any sort of Virus scan to back up what you suspect. Changing registry values isn't going to solve a suspected virus problem. If the virus is set to change/modify registry value etc, it will keep doing so until you eliminate it...
Try these:

Trend Micro Housecall

Malwarebytes
Give those two a go and see if they pic up anything.

Hi, my PC is having some problems which seem similar to quite many people's cases I have read.

It does not show USB thumbdrive in my computer though windows detects a USB plugged in.

It does not show hidden files and folders as I select the show hidden files option.

It also opens a new window whenever I click one of my 2 local disks though I have selected open each folder in the same window. I searched the solution for this "opening in a new window" problem and I got an instruction to run regedit and delete all "mountpoints2" found in the computer. So I have to repeat this activity everytime I turn on my computer.

Please give me an instruction to clean my infected PC.

Thank you before hand.

I've got a Windows 2000 computer and I am logged in as the administrator. When I change the folder view settings to "show hidden files and folders" and click apply and close, it resets itself immediately, and will not show the hidden files. If I go back to the properties box, the box will have unchecked itself. This seems to be the case for ALL options in the VIEW tab of FOLDER OPTIONS.

By the way, this condition also exists in safe mode.

Any ideas?
