I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just read this on the Neowin.net site:

Microsoft reminded solution providers and end users Wednesday that support for Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) will end Oct. 10. Customers running Windows XP SP1 must migrate to Windows XP SP2 over the next 3 months or they will lose incident support. Microsoft also said it won't release any more security updates for SP1 after that date.

During its monthly security briefing, Microsoft executives told customers to prepare their migrations over the summer. "I urge all customers to have plans ready for moving to XP SP2 as soon as possible" said Stephen Toulouse, a security product manager at Microsoft. The original support end date for Windows XP SP1 was Sept. 17, 2006.

Hi, There seems to have been a problem with a Microsoft Antispyware update, so those of you who have BOTH Norton software, and use Microsoft Antispyware program, had better wait till the next update which will hopefully resolve this:

We are seeing several other posts with this issue, right now, so I am sure it is not a mistake.

I messed up! Big time. (at least in my mind)

I have a laptop with a drive that is partitioned. C = programs and D = files, pics, music, etc. I have to share my laptop with a family member for awhile and I don't like them looking at my stuff, so I thought I would be savvy and change the permissions so they, as a user, couldn't read or write that drive. Since I have a administrator account I figured this was the best way to protect my privacy. WRONG!!! Now when I log in, as me, the administrator, I can not access the drive. If I click on My Computer, I see drive C with 11gb free, but drive D just says NFTS.

How can I undo this mistake?

Thanks for the HELP !!!

Hello,
I come across an issue. I have some powershell scripts in a folder. My demand is that i'd like to share it with remote domain users. But i don't want them to check the content inside.
So, when i set the NTFS permission for the users,  I removed the read permission only retained 'Traverse folder/execute file" permission
and "list folder/read data" permission. however, the remote users could access the folder remotely but failed to see any scripts inside the folder. just looks like the the folder is empty.
My questions is if my requirement is viable with NTFS permission.

Hi
We have windows 2008 r2 domain controller and Windows 7 Pro clients. There is a requirement that user perform some run on software and software generate test file / result which are save on local D drive, now we need to assign permission that
domain users can read. write, modify, create new files/folder on d drive but do not rename or delete files/folders. For that i set following permission on d drive:
Full control for domain admin, local administrator, system
for domain users allow modify, deny delete and delete subfolder and files
Owner of the d drive is domain administrator
After that user can read files but at the time of saving files the error is "you dont have suffieceint permission to modify files on this location" and o kb file created but if user try to save second time than the file will save on that same location
So  user need to save files two time and one file created with 0 kb.
Please suggest a solution. Thank you.

End of Support for AVG 6.0
Grisoft announces the end of support for AVG version 6.0 effective on December 31, 2004 for technical reasons. This version has been available since 1999. It's structure does not allow for further improvements planned for version 7 nor improvements of detection techniques expected to come in the future.

End of support means we will no longer provide program updates or Virus Database updates for version 6.0 and therefore, within days, this version will not protect against new virus outbreaks!

Current AVG 6.0 users should upgrade to AVG 7.0. Information on upgrading to version 7.0 can be found at http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_upgrade.php.
- October 25, 2004 -

Answer:AVG users please read.....

Also to head off any confusion....AVG7.0 FREE Version will be offered to replace the older 6.0 version. So it's still FREE..but you'll need to upgrade to version 7.0 when it's released in Nov.

It seems that Microsoft screwed most of us, as No-IP.com users (if you use their DDNS services.) Microsoft seized (legally, but unethically), a bunch of domains that were registered to No-IP.com, which means that if you are using their services, your server/computer may not be receiving the traffic it should.

Read here for more info: https://www.noip.com/blog/2014/06/30/ips-formal-statement-microsoft-takedown/

They are offering alternate domain names, for the time being, but I'm not sure how long those will last.

Question: AIM users read

There IS an AIM virus going around. Once downloaded, this virus will send itself automatically through instant messages (yes, it will instant message people by itself)
This virus is contracted via a website claiming to have footage of Osama Bin Laden's capture. (besides going into how stupid it is to believe that....)Don't click on the sent link...
But if you must click, please, don't download the offered program...
Once downloaded, it will then send the same link to people automatically through AIM

We are shopping for a new anti-spam filter, and everyone seems to rave about the Barracuda. Our current anti-spam applicance allows us to set very customizable rules, to either delete, allow, or isolate emails; we can then use a web page to view the isolate emails, and either release or delete them. I assume the Barracuda can do the same thing?

Answer:barracuda users, read this

i am expecting my barracudas on friday. if you get the 300 model or above you will be able to use an outlook plugin that puts a spam quarantine folder in each user's mailbox. they can sort through there for their emails. i believe they also can move emails to a spam or ham subfolder so the bayesian filter in your barracuda starts learning.

if you get the 200 model you will have a single central spam quarantine that you will have to manage. people will have to call you saying they are expecting an email that never arrived and then you'll have to sort through the quarantine for it.

i'm not sure what sort of rules you can build with the barracuda if any, though i don't feel a strong need to have this capability. first of all, building your own rules can take a lot of time and net few rewards. i'd rather have a bayesian filter that can learn the difference between spam and ham itself. also, i'd rather have a good base set of rules provided by the vendor which get updated regularly. last, but not least, i'd like to have the ability to use RBLs. the barracuda has all of these. on top of that it has 2 different virus scanning engines.

again, i'm not expert and have no hands-on experience with barracudas. but like, you i heard only raves about the product and did some research.

Hello all,Before I go on, there has been problems with trying to connect to Bluetack's web site, and I'm not sure when it'll be back up, which means the links posted here may not work.PeerGuardian 2 users... You are urged to make sure your PeerGuardian 2 is updated with all of their "blocklists" (there are 20 lists). If your PeerGuardian 2 shows that you have 6 List - 6 Lists Up To Date(default list) then you need to add the other 14 lists to it. Your list should be blocking at least 20 lists. You can get PeerGuardian 2 by going here: http://phoenixlabs.org/Although this list has been broken down for the PeerGuardian 2 users. You can also visit http://www.bluetack.co.uk and download the Blocklist Manager, which has all of the lists listed here, plus others.. that aren't mentioned here.To add these lists to your PeerGuardian 2, (and you should add them after reading this).. simply do this:With PeerGuardian 2 already openClick on the List Manager buttonThen click on the Add buttonThen click on the Add URL radio button, then using the drop-down list, and select the list you want to use... I suggest you add them all to your "Blocked" list. At least 6 of them are already loaded in your PeerGuardian 2. In the description area, give it a name that you can identify when PeerGuardian blocks from that list. I simply used the names of the file itself as the description. Example:level1 list.... my description is Level 1bogon list... my description is Bogontrojan list..... Read more

If you're using AOL and have Norton installed and have suddenly been having connection problems, this may be the reason:

An incorrect update to Symantec's Norton security software on Wednesday blocked Internet access for some America Online users.

The issue affected AOL customers using recent editions of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security, Symantec said in a statement sent via e-mail on Thursday. The culprit was an update to intrusion prevention software that is part of the security software, the company said.

"This update incorrectly detected traffic patterns used as part of the AOL connection as a potential risk," Symantec said in the statement. AOL has about 20 million Internet service subscribers.

As a result of the incorrect update, AOL dial-up customers lost their connection and AOL broadband users were unable to access AOL servers, Symantec said. The erroneous update was removed from Symantec's servers about seven hours after it was released, and a corrected version was posted, the company said.

There seems to be a problem with the updates from Adobe for Adobe Photoshop 7.0. It seems that the updates never finalize and makes Photoshop be non-responsive. (It make be something to do with their severs, they are having problems there.)

If you are in this situation, the best way to fix this is take out your internet connection and then start Photoshop. It should then say that it could not update because there is no connection. OK that and then go to Preferences > Adobe Online and change the check updates to Never. This will prevent Photoshop from updating.

For those users that do not get the problem, it highly suggested that you change the update checking as well to save you the hassle later.

PS make sure you plug the ethernet cord back in

PS7 hasn't been able to update via the the updater for at least a year or two.

How to disable the Firefox .NET Framework Assistant installed by MS.
[COLOR=DarkBlue]
In a recent update of the .NET framework Microsoft silently installs an extension to your Firefox browser if it is found on your system. This extension enables websites you visit with Firefox to silently install software on your computer, thus injecting the most serious flaw of Internet Explorer into Firefox.

Microsoft installs this extension in such a way that it cannot be removed directly by the user -- it is listed in the Extensions list but Uninstall is disabled.

This is not a bug -- this is the intended functionality of the Firefox extension, probably to enable Microsoft to install software on your machine when you visit their websites with Firefox instead of IE. This extension introduces a serious security vulnerability to Firefox. It should be removed immediately, using the instructions below.
Links removed by dmex

Hi sallye, Welcome to EightForums.

If you are using Windows 8.1 Pro this setup is very easy to enforce. You can use Group Policy to disable the page zoom function.

First, you'll want to open the Internet Explorer and press CTRL + 0 to reset the default zoom size for each user.

Next, open Group Policy. To do this Press + S, type: gpedit.msc, click gpedit.msc to open Group Policy editor.

In the left pane expand Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Internet Explorer

Locate, Turn off page zooming functionality > set it to enabled then click Apply. Restart the computer.

Hi all,

I have a MS Access 2003 database and it opens as read-only on all other machines apart from mine.

The database is located on a network drive in which all the other users have full read/write access. They also have ODBC connections with full access. The database itself is not set to read-only through properties. I have not set up any security. The database is not open on another machine.

I just want this database to be fully accessible to all.
Does anyone know any settings could be preventing this?

Thanks!

Hey all,

I decided to upgrade the cooler on my PCI-E ATi X1950 pro (sapphire) graphics card with a zalman cooler.

Installation went fine but when i put it into the PC and turned it on, the screen is a mess. I can see the POST information but there is blue stripy bars and rows of letters (for example, pppppppppppppppppp) in random places. The PC can stay in windows for a few minuites before I lose the picture and have to flick the power switch on the PSU to turn the computer off.

Also, seems odd but the PC does not fully POST when it is lying on it's side. I don't think this was the case before the fan change.

This is a bit disturbing. I have checked the card out and everything seems fine visually.

What I want to check is the gold contacts (that plug into the motherboard). The one closest to the output is only 1/2 a contact. It looks like a square where the others rectangle. It LOOKS like it is intentional but I want to check if others have have that, and if not it means i am missing 1/2 a contact, which could cause the problem.

I have thought about overheating, but the fact i get this screen mess AS SOON as I get a picture may rule that out. The fan is spinning fine.

Thanks for any help you may provide

Hello Excel Experts. I have a need to protect an Excel workbook that currently is on a shared drive. I have one person whom updates the spreadsheet everyday. However there are several people that view the spreadsheet. How can I allow that one person edit access and everyone else readonly access? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Answer:Excel 2010 - Allow 1 user to make changes, Read only for other users

I would suggest to password protect the file an allow for read-only if no password is provided.
If the person allowed to edit should then open the file using the password so he / she can make changes.

I have a Windows 2003 server R2 Sp1 and XP SP2 workstations with Office 2000. Occasionally 2 users are able to access the same excel 2000 spreadsheet at the same time without receiving a file open notice until the second user tries to save the file. Then they receive a message stating that the file is in use and that they can do a save as. Usually if a user tries to access a file that is already in use, they receive a file in use popup and they are given the choice to open read only, notify or close. This issue does not happen all the time and is not specific to one particular file. And the file was never setup for sharing. I've checked my security and permissions for the shares and I don't see a solution. I've suspected file corruption and copied the data into a new file and replaced the old file thinking that would solve the problem and no luck. Is there something I'm missing?

but all they have to do is click on the tab on the toolbar on the bottom for it to reappear

how can i prevent this from happening?

Answer:how can i prevent read-only users from seeing the database window in access?

One simple way is in Tools\startup you can disable various toolbars. The draw back is if you hold down the shiftkey when dbl click to open you open in 'design mode'. But average user doesn't know.

Hi I'm new (did I mention that I love you guys?)

So, I well actually my baby (my computer now referred to as 'my baby') contracted Vista Antivirus 2011. I was on youtube and getting zamzar to convert a file to an MP3 for me. I was downloading the MP3 as usually (never ever had problems with zamzar before!) and Vista Antivirus 2011 blocked all access to my files and the internet except to purchase their 'solution' product.

I'm not incredibly computer saavy but I knew something was up so I closed everything but everytime I tried to run anything (ex Microsoft Word) it prompted the 'Anti Virus Protection' and started the fake scan again.

I discovered that I could get onto the internet in the admin account. I've been neating up these forums pretty hard trying to get a solution for the video flickering and BSOD'ing/driver crashing with the switchable graphics setups on our T500's and Vista Biz 32.  Here is the link for the excerpt below: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/display/wddm_timeout.mspx#EGDMicrosoft says that Vista is basically rocovering your system when the graphics hiccups without restarting your system. Now get this- they also say the following: Timeout Detection and RecoveryWindows Vista attempts to detect these problematic hang situations and recover a responsive desktop dynamically. In this process, the   Microsoft Windows Display Driver Model (WDDM) driver is reinitialized and the GPU is reset. No reboot is necessary, which greatly enhances the user experience. The only visible artifact from the hang detection to the recovery is a screen flicker, which results from resetting some portions of the graphics stack, causing a screen redraw. Some older Microsoft DirectX applications may render to a black screen at the end of this recovery. The end user would have to restart these applications. This Does Not enhance anything, in fact is causes more problems and keeps me from getting work done (with the random reboots) and I cannot roll these out to customers like this. Can someone from Lenovo read this and provide us customers who paid almost $3000 apiece for these machines some assistance? anyway i can figure out how to move the local (joe1) account to the server (joe2)i have tried a command moveuser but i keep getting a parameter error on there (error 87) .

i typed it like this

moveuser joe1 (company doamin)\joe2 /c:\\(client machine)

User 1 logs in and works does whatever... Doesn't log out but screensaver goes back to user screen.

User 2 logs in (switching users - not logging out user 1) and gets to work.

Sometime later (ie. not right away) and not at a prescribed time, the network stops working.

I try to disable / enable the network adapter and the machine freezes.   Reboot fixes problem.

If user 1 or user 2 is the only one logged in then never a problem.

Anyone heard of this?
Thanks for any help!

Answer:Multiple Windows 7 Users-Switch between Users-network stops working

When switching users, it's always a good idea to have User 1 close out any applications and documents they have open and then log out before User 2 logs in. It sounds like you have fast user switching enabled, but I'm not aware of that causing any network issues -- unless User 1 was doing something that required a network connect.

Check the Event Viewer for error logs from the time it froze when you tried to disable and enable the network adapter. Post the event ID and description here if you need help diagnosing the issue from the log files. Perhaps another fix is to disable fast user switching, so that users are always forced to log out before someone else can log in.

Inside this folder you have a folder for every department -- i.e. Accounting, Engineering, Information Technology. This "United States Division" folder inherits its security permissions from Z:\. On each departmental folder, there is an AD group "US_dpt_Accounting" or "US_dpt_Engineering" (in the form of "<division>_dpt_<department>") with

Users are only supposed to be able to browse the folder skeleton. They can modify/write/change *inside* their own departmental folder. Both of this works.

However, I discovered a "glitch" today. A user can right click on a folder in Z:\ or "Z:\United States Division\" --> Create shortcut... it will actually do it! O_O They cannot however delete, rename, create new folder/file, or copy fi... Read more

Answer:Read-only network share, yet users can create shortcuts of listed folders and files

If you are sharing folders under a folder with full permissions, you need to change the NTFS permissions under the security tab for each individual folder underneath you are sharing.

Just change authenticated users under the security tab and uncheck everything but "read". This will only give users permissions to read those folders.

I am a Media Center user and in my home its my only computer.
I use Win7 for Work and Taking Care of Stuff for the Home...
and about 2 years ago I went from a part time Media Center User to
a Hardcore record everything on cable before I cut the cord user.
But after I cut the cord and go to Antenna I am just at the range where
TV Signals arent stable unless I install a 50foot tower and a really large antenna.
But even so I will want to record everything that way when 2 shows conflict during primetime
I will have it to watch when Jerry Springer or Judge Judy is on.
I will also have everything I have recorded off of Cable and I will be Legal
meaning watching torrents won't get my internet shut off
Which means my Phone would also get cut off along with my ability to make money as
a developer part time...
Streaming might be the solution for some people but it comes with a cost.
Either you are paying for services that add up to a higher cost than your cable or dish packages.
You are forced to resort to illegal torrents or sites.
or you end up paying higher costs for internet because it takes a ton of bandwidth to stream HD 1080p to the living room, kids room, parents .. whatever all at the same time ..
That free Gigabit Google ain't no where to be seen... so you will be buying 100-200Mbit plans so you can keep your TV, Phone, Alarm / Video Surveillance online at the same time and still surf the web and update your android apps on your cell...

Answer:15% of Windows Users are Media Center Users that Can't Upgrade

Please check this DVBLink wiki
I used this app a while ago to watch and record IPTV on Windows Media Center. But I think they can do it with other sources too. The latest version can record TV server side so you don't need a Windows Media Center anymore. And now I use Plex server for all of my Video stuff instead of Windows Media Center.
It's really a shame MS stopped so many successful apps.

I have myself set on the RADIUS server to pass Privilege 15, but we have some techs that I want to be able to see the entire running config .. just not modify it.

I have looked and looked and it seems Privilege levels will only let you "see" what you can also modify. So if I give the techs lets say Privilege level 7 or 8.. they can see running config.. but not the entire config.

It seems blogs are suggesting a work around to this to issue the "auto command" to show running config then disconnect. But I am wondering if anyone else has come across this limitation and found a better solution.

The other big problem I have with the above mentioned work around is that it relies on a local user to the switch. I would ideally like to setup something that I can use their AD credentials. I already have RADIUS and they can authenticate and login to the switches via AD user and pass, but it seems I can only set them as full access or no access.

Answer:RADIUS with Cisco and "read only" users

I believe that with standard user levels you can only view portions of the running config that you have permission to change. If you are looking for more granular access control, I think TACACS+ allows per-command authorization.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

Hey Guys,

If you are using Kaspersky on Windows XP, and your Blue Shift is not working, I may have a solution for you. If you go into Kapersky, go to My Security Zone and then application activity. Go to Category and then click all. Scroll down until you find everything to do with Blue Shift ( Half Life Launcher, installation etc). Right click on each of these and change the status to Trusted. The game should work now. I hope this helps I've had the problem for a while and it was driving me nuts. I'd also like to thank the user "fragger" for giving me the idea to look at Kaspersky. If your reading this, hope it helps you out buddy.

I'd also like to add the game only works when I have Safari open. Absolutely no idea why, but this seems to be a requirement.

Can anyone help me regain Security Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder which I lost while looking at the access rights. I mistakenly closed the box while playing with the access rights and lost any access to the file.
I pulled the access rights to the file using icacls they are below.

application data
D:PAI(D;OICI;FA;;;WD)(A;;0x1200a9;;;WD)(A;OICI;FA;;;SY)(A;OICI;FA;;;BA)S:AI

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

Answer:Lost Access Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

Hi everyone,

I am the web masters of a local snowmobile club and our new website is having a few problems with printing. Please take a look at the site, http://www.strathroysnoblizzards.com/Strathroy_Sno-Blizzards/index.html

As you can see it has a black background which when printed on my Mac OS X has no problems with printing (it leaves out black background and keeps the text and images) and prints everything.

The problem is that one of our members are ticked that they can not print the site because of the black showing up above the text and images and I really don't want to change the background because it look good the way it is, so is there any way to change to printer settings or some ideas for him to help him out with this problem.

Second problem is that out of 4 pages, 2 are blank with nothing on it and there is suppose to be text and images on those pages, anyway how to fix this too?

Thanks Guys

Answer:Website printing??? (backgrounds causing problems with PC users but not Mac users)

I only have one suggestion. Do they have this unchecked?
Print background colors and images.

IE->Tools->Internet Options->Advance Tab-> scroll down
to the Printing headline. Make sure it is unchecked.

working with vista homeprem sp2 32bit here. ran a quick avast scan a few minutes ago, it caught some small-time junk in the temporary internet files (which were purged easily enough), but it also pointed out C:\users\all users as "the system cannot find the path specified". so I open up windows explorer and try to go there. cue the "refers to a location that is unavailable" error message. now, I don't usually need to prod around in there so I'm not familiar with what normally happens, but I know vista loves to have a bunch of directories displayed that are shortcuts it uses for people who leave "hide protected OS files" checked (I don't, I want to see what's where) which really ought to not be shown when you're not hiding stuff but I digress, that's for MS to be groused at after win8 flops.

SO. should I panic that I've had another thing sneak past the security screens (mvp hosts file, spyware blaster, avast's shields, mbam scans)? nothing else seems out of sorts, but one man's paranoia is another man's preparation, and all.

Answer:C:\Users\All Users refers to a location that is unavailable *error message*

This is normal. All users folder points to c:\programdata folder. These are called symbolic links.

I don't remember when, but I availed myself of the free Windows 10 upgrade sometime back. I was using 8.1 and I had, at some point, moved C:\Users and all its associated folders to E:. Everything has worked fine and Win10 didn't have a problem. I did notice that there was still a C:\Users, but the only folder it contains is Administrator.

This was probably not a good move to make. Moving data folders, like Pictures, Documents, etc., is fine, but moving the actual User Profiles was not such a good idea. My E: drive is no longer large enough to hold all my photos and other data. I bought a replacement drive large enough, but having my Users Profiles on E: is now a problem and I want to move them back to C:, only without the data folders.

I can delete all the existing data files from those default folders (I have backed them all up), so now I need to find a way to restore the Users folder and contents to C:. I've tried researching the problem, but found nothing that specifically applies to my situation. The TenForums article, "Relocating Users folder on an existing Windows installation" Seems to be as close as I can get. Unfortunately, this part has made me take pause and ask you all for help:

Do you know what I should do? Maybe Kari's still around and can reply? Any guidance would be appreciated.

If you used the Sysprep method to relocate the Users folder to E: drive, you can use the same method to relocate it back to C: drive. The warning you quoted is when doing this in a clean install, it does not apply when moving Users folder back to C: drive which will always be accepted and OK for Windows.

Follow these simple steps (looks more complicated than it in reality is!):

Create a new, temporary local user account, name it as you wish like "Dummy" or such (tutorial)Change Dummy's account type to administrator (tutorial)Sign out from all other user accounts, sign in to DummyDisable all other user accounts except Dummy, the one you are currently signed in (tutorial). No worries, accounts and their data will remain intact, deactivating (disabling) them temporarily is done because sometimes Sysprep causes existing user accounts to lose Start and Search / Cortana functionality. When we are ready we will again activate (enable) all old user accountsWhen done, open an elevated Notepad (right click and select Run as Administrator) copy the following code and paste it to a new text document]:

Code:

How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

All of my computers are wired... but, I would like to give my retired neighbor (he's 64 years old) wireless access. But, I don't want him or anyone else access to my shared files b/w desktop/laptop. So, should I put it on a different subnet? Do I need a 2nd router? Right now, I have the BEFSR41 with a WAP11 AP on 192.168.1.245 with the router on 192.168.1.1 (both are 255.255.255.0 subnet).

Thanks!

Answer:How can I setup 2 networks so that my wireless users can't access wired users?

I would setup a DMZ, you can do this by using two physical routers or something like smooth wall with multiple nics. If I were you I would setup smooth wall on a crap old box and install 3 network cards into the old computer. Hooking your cable modem to one of the network cards in the smoothwall box will be like pluggin in your cable modem to the wan port on the back of your router. I would plug your wireless router into to the next nic on your smooth wall box. If your neighbor is the only one using the wireless do the following. Enable WEP, don't broadcast your ssid, filter by mac address, and limit the total number of connections to 1. That should keep your wireless rather secure. With the final network card in the smooth wall box attach either a standard switch or even another router. Smooth wall has built in DHCP support and it will allow you to set a range of ips.Hard wire all your home computer to the switch and your in business.

What is the best way to share execution priviledges between limited users, power users, and administrators?

Say an application has already been installed by a higher priviledged user type, and a limited user cannot execute it - e.g. an ISP login software, or Spy Sweeper. Note: ISP login software lacks profile, so I suppose I could just create that, however, Spy Sweeper is a head scratcher.

Should the application be uninstalled and reinstall under All Users? How do you install an application to allow All Users to use it?

I have already tried to use the "Run As" right-click Properties w/Shift key approach and that does not work.

Is there an approach with regard to local security policy that would do what I want to do? How is that done? Or, is Access Control List the way to go?

As Administrator, I?ve created my own folders for my documents. These are located in the D: partition of my hard drive; and they are shown in the Library section of the contents of the computer, on the left.
Now, when opening the computer from the Guest Account, my own folders do not appear in the Library, all right. But just below the Library there appears the rest of the computer content, including the D: partition, and any Guest can access all the folders and files there, including my documents.
How can I hide the folders of each User from any other Guests, not only in the Library but also in their actual location in the hard drives?
Thanks for any help.
ACA

Answer:Hiding Users' files from Guest Users

OK this appears to be a simple permissions issue.

go to your root folder on the D: drive and right click the folder and select properties.

on the security tab you should see a list of those who have access to the folder - Make sure that your user has full rights and remove all rights to the "everyone" user group. This when OK'd should xascade down to all files and folders contained in the folder

If you wish you can adjust the rights available to any other particular user on the system - Make sure that you do not remove or change any rights given to system or administrative users unless you fully understand the result

Windows XP Has More Users than Windows Vista and Windows 8 Combined, Avast Says

Security company Avast has published global Windows usage data as part of the PC Trends Report (PDF document) for the first quarter of 2017, revealing that Windows 7 continues to lead the market with a share that?s close to 50 percent.

While it?s important to note that these figures come from computers running Avast, they do align with the statistics provided by research firms whose main activity is monitoring operating system usage, so there?s a good chance these are accurate.

First and foremost, there?s leader Windows 7. According to Avast, the operating system launched in 2009 is currently powering more than 56 million computers where its antivirus product is installed, and this means a share of no less than 48.35 percent.

Windows 10 is growing, the security firm says, and it managed to reach a share of 30.46 percent, which accounts for a little over 35 million devices running Avast security software.

Windows XP still a super-popular choice
But what?s a little more worrying for everyone, including here Microsoft, users, and Avast itself, is that Windows XP, which was launched in 2001 and no longer receives security updates since April 2014, is still running on more than 6.5 million computers. This means that it has a share of 5.64 percent, more than Windows 8 (2.51 percent) and Windows Vista (2.08 percent) combined.

Windows 8 was launched in 2012 as Microsoft?s new revolutio... Read more

Answer:Will the Windows 10 Technical Preview users be able to upgrade to the full version of windows 10?

Last I heard is that there WILL be an upgrade path from Windows 10 Technical Preview to Retail Windows 10 IF:
You ONLY have a released build installed (no leaked build)NOTE: Below is NOT OFFICIAL, just supposition!!
Now, as for the FREE part, there will probably be steps needed to prove that you own a copy of Windows 7/8. However, if you did an in-place upgrade to Windows 10 Technical Preview and not a clean install, you may not have to verify. Only time will tell.

n using Apple Software Update to slip his Safari browser onto millions of Windows PCs, Steve Jobs didn't just undermine "the security of the whole Web". He's made a mockery of end user licensing agreements.

As spotted by our Italian friends at setteB.IT, Apple's Safari license says that users are permitted to install the browser on no more than "a single Apple-labeled computer at a time." This means that if you install Safari for Windows on a Windows PC, you're violating the license.

Early last week, as Apple unveiled Safari version 3.1, it began offering the browser to Windows users via the Apple Software Update tool that accompanies iTunes and Quicktime. In other words, millions of people who don't use Safari have now been confronted with a pop-up window that lists the browser as an important software "update."

And this is an offer that many iTunes and Quicktime users are less than likely to refuse. When that pop-up window pops up, the go-ahead-and-install-Safari button is checked by default.

Now that Microsoft has finally started offering the free Windows 10 upgrade to users across the world, we?re seeing quite a lot of people trying to clean install the new operating system and thus avoid the painful process that the upgrade could turn out to be in case of compatibility issues or any other problems experienced during download and install.

And while the clean install worked for every single version of Windows released in the past, it doesn?t work for Windows 10, so you must not attempt to clean install Windows 10 without upgrading first!

The reason is as simple as it could be: the product keys you have for Windows 7 or 8.1 won?t work in Windows 10 and in order to benefit from the free upgrade, you need to perform the direct upgrade first.

How Windows 10 activation works
Microsoft explains how exactly this process works:

?Once your device upgrades to Windows 10 using the free upgrade offer and activates online automatically, an entitlement is registered to your PC?s hardware for your edition of Windows 10. (If you go to Settings >> Update & Security >> Activation says ?Windows is activated?.) Now you will be able to clean install (i.e. boot from media and install Windows 10) the same edition of Windows 10 seamlessly without having to enter a product key.?

In other words, once you perform the direct upgrade to Windows 10 and the operating system is activated, you can perform the clean install how many times you want, as the g... Read more

Microsoft?s biggest challenge after the Windows 8 debut is to convince Windows XP users to make the move to its new OS, as the 11-year old software is not a secure working environment anymore.

But although the Redmond-based technology company is constantly urging consumers to dump Windows XP, they?re not quite interested, Andy Trish, managing director of software reseller NCI Technologies, told IT Pro.

?The only thing that will force a [mass] change from XP will be if someone finds a security or operational hole that can?t be plugged and affects the way they work. Anti-virus companies will still write cures for a virus that may affect XP, so that scare tactic won?t work,? he said.

Microsoft will officially stop providing support for Windows XP in April 2014, so moving to a newer Windows version is a crucial task for most users of this platform.

When I did the Windows 7 install, I am not sure whether during sysprep or using something called Profile Re-locator, I moved the Users Folder from the C: OS drive to my second E: data drive.

I want to upgrade to Win 10 and have been putting it off.

I forgot how to move the users folder back prior to the upgrade.

http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-...s-windows-7-users-will-have-to-pay-to-upgrade

As we wait for the Windows 10 ?consumer preview? unveiling on January 21st, you may be wondering how Microsoft will monetize its new operating system. Given the way Microsoft is pushing its customers towards subscription based Office 365, the same could very well happen with Windows 10. Analysts, however, think it?s a bit early for that.

Gregg Moskowitz, software analyst with Cowen, thinks that while signing up for an annual subscription of Office may be enticing for home users, the same cannot be said about businesses. A subscription model tends to be more costly in the long run, and many large corporations also find it very difficult to upgrade operating systems running on vital hardware.

Moskowitz believes in the possibility that Windows 10 could be offered as a free upgrade to Windows 8 and 8.1 users in order to keep them onboard, after many of them expressed their dissatisfaction with the touch optimized operating system.

It?s no secret that Microsoft is not doing very well in the mobile space compared to Google and Apple, sitting at a distant third place in many markets. Moskowitz suggests that the Redmond giant should continue to offer Windows for free on devices under 9 inches.

Windows 7 users will probably have to pay to upgrade per Moskowitz, since they make up the largest chunk of the Windows user base, and Microsoft may not want to give up one of its main revenue strea... Read more

I saw that. Its interesting, as the privacy agreement for Win10 allows the data mining but what about Win7? Pretty sure it didn't say it, will have to hunt it down, and if it doesn't, are they in breach of the agreement?

Anyhoo, will be making sure all I know have this hidden
