system lock up at shutdown

Question: system lock up at shutdown

I am having a strange problem that has been occuring now on a regular basis. I am running windows ME and using zone alarm as my fire wall. I also use antivar, DR. Spyware, along with spyblaster ccleaner to clean up spyware and malware on aty regular intervoles. I have run HJT and had major geeks review the log. All was good with my system.I am also up to date with all the micro soft windows updates to ME. However when I power down I get a blue screen (not the blue screen of death with an error message) but a pale blue screen. At that point the system hangs. I have to reboot to safe mode, run disk scan and then power down. The other think that will sometimes happen when I go though this process, is the next time I power up. Sometimes I get a message that my last power down of window was incorrect and I have to hit the radio bar on my screen to get back my desk top. Any ideas. I can supply any othere info you may need. I would like to thank anyone in advance for ant help.

Preferred Solution: system lock up at shutdown

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I try to shut down my computer, the OS is windows XP Professional.

It goes to the normal shutdown screen. "Windows is shutting down" And then locks up... after a minute, all of my peripherals shut off (mouse and keyboard lights go off), and then it BSoDs me...

What kind of information do you guys need to help me out, ask and I will tell.

It's quite the nuisance not being able to shut down in an orderly fashion, and I do not know if it is having an adverse effect on my computer... For safety's sake, I would like to resolve this problem

Ask away to help me isolate and solve this problem,

-Olan

PS. I have reformatted once, and that did NOT solve this problem.
I have also taken apart the PC and put it back together. MY BIOS and drivers are up to date. And... I have the latest windows updates.

Got a new comp recently, 660S, it has the annoying habit of lighting the Num. Lock on my (wired, USB) Keyboard at Shutdown only way so far to switch off the light is to unplug the keyboard which is becoming boring!
BTW the light would remain on even though the comp. is shut down until it is restarted - then it goes out!

Answer:Shutdown of W7 triggers Num. Lock on K/B

Think I found the answer, I removed my k/b from the USB Hub that I was using and plugged it directly into the computer (only available port was USB3) now the light comes on when shutting down but goes off when the comp completely shuts down! It comes back on again at start up but goes out when OS finishes loading - I can live with that!

I've now looked at 9 of this series with a variety of chip and HD specs.  All share the same problem - random screen freeze-up, no operation of keyboard,  mousepad or mouse, often, but not always  followed by  involuntary machine switch off. Because they are all well out of warranty, no help has been available from HP.  All the geek sites have provided useful info, from hardware checks - Speedfan etc., updating drivers for everything including the  AMD graphics cards, cleaning out dust, but none have provided a cure. Both the 500 series and b27SA models are involved. Has HP ever put out any advisories other than what I've already done? Joxter  (TIA)

Hi Experts,When we want to lock the computer we do the following:Ctrl Alt Del(A dialog box appears)Lock computerWhen we want to unlock the computer we do the following:Ctrl Alt Del(A dialog box appears)Key in passwordEnterIs there any possibility in the registry (or somewhere) of XP Professional menu to:1.      automate the above,2.      automate a shutdown at specified time? Thanks.

Answer:Auto lock, unlock and shutdown

1) What do you want to automate? Lock? Well, you can use also the windows key+L (the L key). To unlock, you have to press ctrl+alt+del and enter the username and password (username, in case you want to log off the user which locked the computer). You can't automate this -- but you can disable the lock option (why do you want to do it?). Are you in a domain? Then talk to network administrator/system administrator. It's your home computer? Then use the simple logon options, without passwords.A simple way to lock the computer it's to set the computer to lock when enters in screen saver mode.2) For shutdown at a specified time: you may create a bat file, which should contain a line like:shutdown -s -f -t 60(see shutdown command in windows)And then, add a new scheduled task which runs that bat file at the specified time.

after requesting shutdown the screen went black, the light for the speaker being muted did not go off and the caps lock light is flashing 5 times slow and then 3 times fast, and keeps repeating this. The problem happened 2 time the first 2 days I had it and after forcing a power down when the laptop booted the OS was corrupted and I had to do a full reload. If it happened a third time I was going to contact HP but the problem went away for 2 months and now it is back

After trying to register at their forum, I finally gave up and hope to get help here.

This may be a stupid question, but Slawdog Smart Shutdown has an option to lock the computer. What does this mean? If I lock it, how do I get it unlocked?

I'm thinking this might be a good feature to use for a 16 year old grandson who gets up after we go to bed and gets on my computer. If I could lock it so he couldn't use it without my input, that would be great. Am I on the right track here, or does it mean something totally different?

Thanks
Peg

Answer:Slawdog Smart Shutdown - lock

You really dont need anything to lock him out. Try giving your account a password and when done on the pc simply log out and he cannot get on unless you let him on. Also you can set up to prompt for a password at the screensaver settings screen.

Hi,

I seem to have a problem with my paths in windows xp pro. I'm not too sure what it is that has caused the problem, but it is hindering my use of my computer quite badly.

Whenever I run command line prompts such as ping or net, I get an error saying

'net' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

The most recent cause is when I'm trying to run a development MySQL server on my machine and the command line prompt is C:\>NET START MYSQL, to begin the instance. Its the same for any ping commands I run, which means I can't network the PC with anything either. I can temporarily solve the problem by going into the windows registry and navigating to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control \SessionManager\Environment

and changing the path entry 'type' from REG_SZ to REG_EXPAND_SZ. However, whenever I shut down the PC, the path entry goes back to REG_SZ. Is there some way I can lock this change in the registry values, so it stays the way I instruct in the future, and I don't have to keep changing it every time I want to connect my computer to just about anything?

Hi

For some reason I have not got the shutdown options within the Lock Screen. They are only in the login but I want to have them in the Lock Screen as I may find myself unable to access login screen sometime in the future. I would like to have that functionality.

I have confirmed the option in my Security Policies is set to disabled but I'm guessing this is not the correct setting. Please advise, as I know it's possible but cannot find the option at the moment. I'm guessing it is most likely in the registry somewhere but have not checked there as yet. Thanks!

Answer:No shutdown option from within Lock Screen

Press and hold the power button. Or set the power button option, in Advanced Power Options, to Shut Down the system for both AC powered and Battery powered.

Not sure why you wouldn't be able to access the login screen. No need to actually Log In. That option is available from the Log In screen where you type in your password.

I am having problems with this computer shutting down, booting and even sometimes while surfing the internet. It locks up about 50% of the time shutting down, and locks up while booting maybe 25% of the time. Sometimes while on the internet a web page will just freeze and upon pressing cntrl/alt/delete once I get the message that Internet Explorer is not responding.
When I choose *End Task* it freezes the system and I have to hit the reset button on the case.

These problems started when I installed my MSI G4 MX440 card a few weeks back. I have updated to the newest drivers for the video card but that has not made any difference.

Should I reinstall Win98SE on top of itself to get the drivers and software back to normal or will that work?

My system is a 400 MHz Celeron, Super Micro P6SBA Mobo, 256MB Micron RAM, WD 80 GB HDD, MSI G4MX440 video card, Diamond Monster Sound MX 300 sound card.

I appreciate any help

Mike

Answer:Computer shutdown/boot lock up's

Have all available windows updates been done? If not I would try that first.

From my experience, re-installing 98 on top of itself will create many more problems than it will fix.

Probably just time for an FFR.

Answer:AT SHUTDOWN the unit Satellite 2400 lock up

Hello

The base system device is usually the PCMCIA slot or card reader or both. Some laptop manufactures bundle a set of drivers and call it "Chipset" even though it includes more than the chip set.
I assume that you didn?t install the chipset driver or you have install it but in the false order. The chipset driver should be installed at first.

Well, the windows want shut down because some background processes are running or because of a OS malfunction. I assume that this problem doesn?t occur with the Toshiba recovery CD because all drivers are installed properly.

About the BIOS procedure:
Please check this Toshiba page. There you will find a instructions how to update the BIOS.
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/faq.jsp?z=234&service=EU&from=faq_selection&CFID=B IOS&FID=TRO0000000b07

But please note: The wrong BIOS or a wrong procedure can damage the mainboard. Firstly you should check if the clean installation with the Recovery CD will solve the problem before you start the BIOS update!!!

I was trying to help a friend w/ his laptop w/ Vista (which I have not used before) and when we shut it down, I accidently hit the LOCK icon and closed the lid. When he tried to restart, the system appears to come back up, but then the screen goes black. I tried CTL-ALT-DEL, but nothing happened, still black screen, but there is lots of disk activity going on. We did a hard shutdown (holding power button down) and rebooted, getting an error screen and then booting in safe mode. Can do that, but don't know what to modifiy or try and change. He says he never created a password, has only one account on the computer which is an administrator account. When we reboot into std OS, same old thing, black screen after just a flash of the main screen. HELP????

Answer:Boot & shutdown issues. PC boots normally only after system restore. Cannot shutdown normally.

I would start with

a. Hard drive diagnostic, long test.

b. Followed by chkdsk /r if no issues during diagnostic.

c. Followed by defrag if no issues with first two steps.

<<Partition 1 - C:\ - OS - size approx 19Gb. ~ 16GB free>>

Is that correct as stated? Seems somewhat anomalous to me.

Hi all,Over the past few months I've been using an X200 Tablet with Windows 7.  Since I've had it I've noticed problems with it not 'sleeping' properly and the ability to Lock, Restart or Shutdown the computer going missing. I?ve done some troubleshooting and narrowed down a scenario where I can repeat the problem 100% of the time.  -       Setup computer with USB device (a keyboard and mouse will do)-       Boot and logon-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Sleep the computer-       Wake the computer-       <test to see if locking works, and unlock ? it works>-       Unplug any of the USB devices At this point the computer can?t be locked, and if you send it to sleep it will essentially crash meaning you have to do a hard shutdown (or as has happened a few times, wait for the battery to run out in your laptop bag...).  I?ve tried different USB ports on the computer and different mice.  I've updated the BIOS and all the drivers, I've even rebuilt it from the Windows DVD.  Is something anyone else has experianced?  If you have a X200 tablet does the same thing happen to you? T

Answer:Help - Repeatable X200T USB, Sleep and Lock/Restart/Shutdown crashes

Out of the blue, I happened to install this Microsoft hotfix (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/976755), and today was the first day that, upon docking, I was able to lock my laptop, and I assume it will go to sleep at the end of the day when I take it home. In checking this forum, I see that this fix was suggested here some time ago:http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-Tablet-ThinkPad-Laptops/X200-Tablet-Win7-Black-screen-freeze-on-... Hope this helps.

I have an X201 Tablet (3113-W4M) that came preloaded with Windows XP SP3.  I blew away the XP image and reloaded with Windows 7 Enterprise and obtained all Windows 7 drivers from the Lenovo website. The issue is that after the system resumes from Sleep or Hibernate *and* I plug in a USB mouse or USB mouse/keyboard combo, I am unable to lock, shutdown, restart, or hibernate the system.  Additionally, anything that invokes UAC fails to display.  If I look at Processes under Task Manager, I see where consent.exe is running (called when a UAC approval prompt should be displayed).  Sometimes it is running multiple times corresponding to multiple events that should have displayed the prompt (e.g. running RegEdit).  Turning off UAC is a workaround to this issue but does not address the root cause and does not address the lock/shutdown/etc. issue. After extensive troubleshooting that included 2 full OS reloads, process monitoring, and deep log reviews, I have narrowed my issue to the following steps: 1) Boot tablet with no USB mouse and/or keyboard attached2) Attach USB mouse and/or keyboard>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both function as expected.3) Hibernate tablet (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)4) Resume from hibernate (USB mouse and/or keyboard attached)>>>Attempt to lock workstation and launch Regedit both fail I discovered this as I move my system from work (Logitech S510 keyboard/mouse c... Hello! Since the most recent build of W-10 (9879), my caps lock, num lock, and scroll lock lights do not function on either computer on which I have W-10 installed (a desktop with a USB keyboard and a laptop with an integrated keyboard). The keys still work to correctly toggle the functionality, but the keyboard lights don't work. In case it matters, my keyboard's actual backlights and my mouse's internal light (not the laser, the internal LED) are working correctly, it's just the CL, NL, and SL indicators that don't function.

Anyone have any ideas for fixing this?

I'm having a set of problems that I can't find an answer for.
1. After choosing the "shutdown" command, the computer stays on the blue "the system is shutting down" screen forever--two days or more--until I hold down the power button for several seconds.
2. On startup, most of the system tray icons (dropbox, network connection, antivirus etc.) don't appear.
3. Task Manager shows a "system interrupt" process using about 99% of the CPU.

The problem can be solved temporarily by doing this:
Powershell as Admin --> "sfc /scannow"

After that, the system is fine at the next startup, but after 1 or 2 startups more the problems reappear until I run SFC again.
From reading other people's reports online it seems people sometimes solve this kind of thing through the Device Manager, but I don't know how to tell which--if any--device or driver is causing the problem.

I have a system restore USB, but am hoping not to do that because I don't want to go through reinstalling all my applications.

The machine is a Samsung NF210 netbook running Win 10, with all the latest updates. Samsung's website doesn't offer any drivers more recent than what's on my computer.

Any ideas?

Answer:System Hangs on Shutdown + System Interrupt CPU Use + Startup Problems

mostly this kind of problems are being caused by virus/adware/malware etc.
It can also be an "update" or "update checker" process of an application.

You could check ,by monitoring processes, wich process is using the most CPU and/or RAM.

You could check ,by monitoring processes, wich process is using the most CPU and/or RAM.

I'm using an HP Pavilion dv6000 Notebook series. I noticed that my Caps Lock LED is not working but its FUNCTION is working fine.. same goes with Scroll Lock. Here's the weird part.. when I press Num Lock ( function key + scroll lock ) the LED turns on! I already tried a system recovery, it didn't solve the issue. Is there something wrong with my BIOS? Any help from you guys will be highly appreciated.. thanks!

Answer:Caps lock & Scroll Lock LEDs not working but Num Lock is wor...

Sometimes electrical components needs to have all power sources removed and reintroduced to work properly.  Try performing a hard reset first, if it doesn't work then try updating your BIOS.  If neither works...It's pretty much dead and not worth fixing.  To Perform A Hard Reset Shut down the computer by going to the Start menu and selecting shut down. (If you have no display, hold the power button down for  5 seconds)Disconnect the AC Adapter from the notebook.Remove the battery from the bottom of the notebook.  There will be a switch/button to eject the battery.Wait at least 1 minute with all power sources disconnected.Re-insert the battery and reconnect the AC Adapter and then attempt to power on the notebook.

For some time now, i have been experiencing that my Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking) all at the same time, I tried to google it but i can not find any solutions or explanations for it.

Does anyone know if it is bad? and what is causing this?

I am having a wired keyboard with nothing fancy just a standard issue Logitech keyboard.

Answer:Num Lock, Caps Lock and Scroll Lock all lights up (not blinking)

Can you toggle those functions off, one at a time? Sometimes restarting the computer will use the last state it was in, I'd fully shut down and pull the power cord from the computer and the keyboard cable then put them back and try again.

Hi,

how to disable Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages?

I have desktop pc with two keyboards usb and bluetooth. Also TOSHIBA Bluetooth Stack software, but in device manager: keyboard > hid keyboard device both using microsoft drivers. And I dont have any software installed for keyboards. Also bluetooth has separate system tray indications (it is also disabled) so its not that. I made some googling and found other fix it with Hkey_Local_Machine\Software\Widcomm\BTConfig\General KeyIndication set to 0, but I dont have it in registry. Acualy I dont have anywhere in registry KeyIndication. So any ideas how to disable it? Thanks

Answer:Caps lock, num lock, scroll lock screen messages

Hi,

You'll find that the messages are controlled by a piece of software that came pre-installed on your machine when you bought it. Try looking for a Hotkey managing app to see if the notifications can be disabled.

I keep using 'shutdown -a' in command prompt to keep it from restarting.usually it either, blocks some sites or i just am not having internet connections for them, it was blocking mcafee updates? or not really allowing me to goto a anti virus site or support sites, just real slow loading and some would say 'host not found'. also it sent about 200-300 emails out on like the first day(21st of sept) i still have some of the ones that didnt send on my mcafee log. a friend of mine suggested system restore, i tried that to sept 3rd, but it tells me on restart that restore couldnt happen because no changes have been made. when the spyware started coming i got the mcafee trial 30day version, ... Answer:Lock system

Hi, Yes, but they can be gotten around by someone with a little knowhow, and if you forget certain ones, it's hard to remove.
There are all kinds of ways to get around things.

Have a look here, but you have to look at info for XP Home, or Pro, whichever you use! The security features are more robust in Pro edition.

System mother board is Phoenix RAM BIOS PLUS 1.10 A09

Answer:System Lock

Hi and welcome to TSG.

As its a Dell, can you give us the Dell Service Tag number then we can look up the exact system specs?

What have you done to 'attempt to correct' the problem?

I would strongly advise against using any form of registry checker software, they can (and often do) do far more harm than good, often causing problems that are not initially apparent. Best overall advice as far as the Registry is concerned is leave well alone if you don't know what you are doing, or accept that you could frag you system software.

System battery isn't a major issue really, so wouldn't worry too much about that at this point.

With the system shut down, double check all the cables and connectors inside, physically remove every connection in turn and reseat it. Do one at a time so you don't loose track of what goes where.

Got rid of all of the ad/spy/mal ware.
Got rid of viruses.

Installed new modem & RAM.
Vacuumed out / cleaned CPU fan, ect.
She even installed a new HD that Dell sent her.

It still locks up.
USUALLY when online (Dial-up AOL) but not always so I dont think that's got anything to do with it.

It's been doing it since she bought it from Dell.
Unfortunately, after she got the replacement HD from Dell, she never "got around to" returning it because it still locked up, now it's too late.

On a regular basis, my screen locks and the mouse icons moves independently around the screen. This occurs if I leave the PC idle for maybe 15 minutes. At this point the mouse or keyboard does not work. Cntl Alt del does not work. My only option is to power down and reboot.
When I reboot, a message comes up asking to connect to TPM, I cancel this and continue to reboot.
This does not happen every day but on the days it does, I can lose everything that was open 4 or 5 times a day unless I go on Standby when not actively working the PC.
Any one any idea how to stop this. Incredibly frustrating.
Declan.

Answer:TPM causes system lock

Is this the Dell Trusted Platform Module BIOS setting which enables encryption? If so you can turn it off in BIOS setup.

If not, Let's start by getting a clean boot so nothing is running except the OS and your AV.

Enter msconfig>Startup and uncheck everything except your AV listing.

Next enter msconfig>Services, select Hide all MS services, then uncheck all except AV.

After several reboots check back in both places to make sure nothing wrote itself back in. If so, turn it off in it's Program preferences or Uninstall it. You can learn what program is involved by googling the listing.

If problem persists, google the exact error message verbatim to learn how others have solved it.

Run a full scan with Malwarebytes.
Install recommended MSE or Avast 6, run full scan.
If you have one of the bloatware AV's MucAfee or Norton, uninstall using their special tool.

So, I've been having issues with my recently built computer. Sometimes when I am playing a game, watching movie, opening a program, or even when I'm starting up the computer I've have system lock ups that require me to restart to get it back and running again. If there is a sound playing during the freeze, it will often get stuck too and repeatedly play the last little bit of the soundfile over and over rapidly. Kills the eardrums to say the least. -_-

I've updated every driver I can find and still am having the issues persist. I'd originally thought it was an issue with my graphics card but I'd switched the one I had been using for a second card and the issues still persist. I've checked the ram to see if they were faulty and the memtests keep coming back ok so I figure that can be ruled out.

The only times I've been able to recreate the lockups with 100% accuracy is when I attempt to install either Dragon Age or Mass Effect 2. Both installations freeze at various percentages. Sometimes it will get as far as a 50% installation while other times it freezes at the 13% mark.

Hi, I'm just wondering if anyone can help. My computer has became increasingly unstable. When I say this I mean it has a tendency to freeze, lock up and reboot.

The problem is... well the problems are when you go into Internet Explorer or Firefox, the computer freezes when there is an image on screen. To get to unfreeze I can press ctrl-alt-del, this only helps for a short time as when it freezes again the motherboard beeps and the only way to get the computer working is to hit reboot on the base.

The other problem is when you exit IE or FF the computer completely locks up and the motherboard beeps and I have to hit reboot on the base once again. Even the keyboard stops responding so ctrl-alt-del is not possible.

At first I thought it was a graphical problem so I uninstalled all the drivers and that didn't stop the problem. I even replaced my GFX card, and took out the memory to see if it was faulty but that didn't stop the problem either. I've tried uninstalling the drivers for the printer, scanner, GFX card and sound card but to no avail.

It had even stopped my anti-virus software (pccillin2002) from updating on the net.

The only thing I can think that is buggering it up is that I have a ancient monitor CTX 1451, so old that you can't get any drivers for it now. After a while it lets out this high pitched squeal, if you hit it it goes away only to come back after a while. I don't know if a monitor could screw a computer up so much, but at the m... Read more

I'm currently looking for different registry "hacks" (for lack of a better term) to disable and lock down a somewhat public computer. Here is the setup. WinXP Professional + touch screen case with a 40"+ plasma/tft. (I don't know which to tell you the truth)

I need the "user" - basically anyone with a finger, to be able to navigate around a webpage on this display, but that is IT.

The computer itself is hidden in the ceiling, so no worries about someone doing a hard reset.

I would imagine I would need the start bar hidden, if there were some way to disable the IE window from minimizing that would be nice as well...

This system was set up many years ago, before I started working here.

Cliffs: Start bar disabled
Desktop icons disabled
Force the IE browser open. That's "it"

BTW: I know they used a VNC program to remote in before, but beyond that I am clueless. I am also using google, I just have a feeling I won't find all the info I need written down, especially procedures, I mean I need the IE window to open before I disable other things...

Thanks for the help all.

There was nothing at all to notice.

I then think it could be a hardware issue.

Hi thanks for looking at my thread, I feel like a moocher coming cap in hand with my first post but I'm starting to get to my wits end. My system locks up in games anything from a couple of seconds to several hours in. The bigger the strain the quicker the lock up, PvPing in Warhammer online with about 50 people involved was locking me much more often. The system becomes unresponsive and requires a hard reboot.

I've tried to do so many things and each time I think I might have solved it bang lock up. I've got all the up to date drivers for mobo and video cards, I've got the fans cranked up to 100% and it seems fairly cool in there.

I just don't know what to do, maybe I missed something in upgrading to 64 bit some driver or something. I've tried to research online possible things but there is so much information. I'm resigned to dealing with my vendor tomorrow when I have the strength but for now hoping maybe there's a suggestion from you guys here. Thanks a lot for any help the system spec is below.

Recently, I had to reinstall my copy of Windows 2000. It had stopped loading correctly - after the Windows Loading screen and before the log-in screen, I would get a blue screen error (page_fault_in_nonpaged_area). I don't have any of the numbers with that though. Anyway, after a fresh install, Windows seemed alright. Now, when I play World of Warcraft, I get about 15 mins of play before the game literally comes to a screeching stop. The screen gets all scrambled, and then freezes. I have to manually restart. I had had occasional problems like that before, but sporadically and after hours of play. Now it happens practically every time I play World of Warcraft, and usually between 15-30 mins of play. My question is really just seeking any advice on what anyone thinks the problem concerns. I don't know tons about computers, but my thoughts led me naturally to my video card. But, as a starving college student, I don't want to immediatly drop 200 bucks on a new vid card without getting some other ideas first. Any thoughts people might have would be greatly appreciated.

Question: system lock up

I'm trying to fix my sister's computer. It will always lock up for no apparent reason. I tried updating windows, McAfee antivirus, AdAware, etc and running complete system scans and it didn't work. So I took a seperate, formatted hard drive and put a fresh install of WinXP on it with nothing else. The computer still locks up. So I created a bootable CD-ROM with Microsoft's memory diagnostic utility and it even locked up on that. So I took both sticks of memory out and ran the utility on each one. Again, they both locked up. They both froze on test 9 of 11 which is the "WStride-6 test: Applies a stride-6 pattern using data patterns tailored for the memory in this system". I have no idea what else to try. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong and how I could fix it? The memory consists of a stick of 128Mb PC-133 and another 128Mb stick but I'm unsure of it's speed. It's running a PIII 667 MHz processor with a SOYO SY-7ISA+ mobo and using the onboard video/sound. WinXP Pro OS.

Thanks for you help.

Question: System Lock ups

Hi there,
Thanks for reading.

I have an ancient Compaq Desktop, 500MHz w/ 384MB ram running W2K. All's been well until I installed a DVD +-RW and accompanying software. Now when I use RealPlayer basic or WMP, either I don't get video playback (although there IS sound) or the system locks up and I have to do a hard reboot.

I tried reinstalling Realplayer but problem continues.

Have you seen this before?

Thanks again!
Bob

Answer:System Lock ups

Did the DVD come with any software or driver discs?-If so try using there media player and see if that works properly--This may be a conflict issue between different media players fighting for control of either your audio or video.

Hey guys. Got this system a few months back for my dad to use. He no longer needed it so he gave it to me. Installed a SSD and used my old HDD and his HDD. Now all I've done is install a few games. No other software or anything. But when I play some games i get hard lock ups... i cant alt tab or alt ctrl del or anything. It locks up and stays that way =|

Runs incredibly well all the time except when it decides to lock up. I have speed fan installed as I initially thought it was a GPU over heating issue but thats not the case.

I've run a intelburntest on the CPU to see if it was that and wondering if its likely to be a GPU or PSU issue?

Let me know what steps to take next and hopefully we can figure this out. haha thanks in advance.

Question: System lock up

After a random period of time the system locks up completely. All keys useless including ALT-CTRL-DEL. No cursor movement. System reset does not work (I just get a bit of Hard drive activity and initial test of drives but no beep and reboot) and requires a complete cold reboot. I have just reloaded Win XP and all drivers with same problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:System lock up

If system reset (the hardware button) doesn't work, I'd suspect a hardware issue, probably in the drive or controller area.

I have just started to experience a major irritation , and possibly even a major security issue

When using the PC , and at no particualr time or when doing any particular thing, the system becomes almost unusable.
The mouse seems to lock , or 'drags behind' or jumps across the screen in huge leaps, and the hard-drive seems to go into over-drive with it buzzing and whirring away.

I have checked Task manager and there are no unknown applications running.
I have also checked in processes , but again I cant see anything that looks out of place, although to be fair the names are not all recognisable.

There is plenty of RAM (at least 1 gb spare)

I do have SKYPE installed , but I only turn it on when I want to use it, so I assume that it cant be using my pc as a node , (unless it is switched on)

I use Norton 2009 with the system absolutely bang up to date
and the system has been deep scanned for viruses.

I am at a loss what this could be
This is a very important work PC, so am loathe to re-load windows, but unless there are no ideas, I might consider that as a last resort
When the problem happens it renders the PC almost unusable for periods up to 10 mins at a time .

Any help please ?

Question: System lock up

My system intermitently locks up and needs to be restarted. I did think it was a bad install of my previous OS (server 2003) or maybe a virus or something but I have since upgraded my OS and the problem is still cropping up, although less frequently. There is no error report created to give an idea of what has failed and the event log is no more helpful.
Obviously I realise this is a really vague problem which could be down to a number of reasons, so is there a program around which could analyse what happens when it crashes?
Cheers for any help on the really frustrating problem,

DG

Answer:System lock up

Hi,
If you are thinking "virus" then I think you need to post a HJT (HijackThis) log and let a qualified member (gold shield next to their name) take you through what needs to be done. I suggest you print off this guide, just in case ....
Please go no further than the stages listed here for now.
Using Hijackthis with the self-installer that puts it into Program Files for you:

go to Click here to download HJTsetup.exe

Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.

Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.

Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.

Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.

Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Now you'll need to wait for a qualified member to take you through the next stages. You'll get great help ...

Richard.

Answer:System lock up

Microsoft says whenever a computer freezes or reboots (crashes) you need to run chkdsk
Start, my computer, right click on your hard drive, select properties, select tools, error checking click "check now"(chkdsk).
(General maintenance can save alot of headaches, see link below for general maintenance)

Hard drive
Download the diagnostic tool and check your hard drive
Hard Disk Drive Diagnostics/Utilities

Overheating

Description

When your CPU overheats, it will usually cause your computer to reboot. Video card overheating causes artifacts to appear on your screen, and usually wont cause reboots.

Diagnostic

Enter BIOS upon powering on your computer. Most BIOs have a hardware monitor. Use this to check your temperatures and fan speeds.

There is also hardware monitoring software that can check your temperatures from Windows. Your hardware monitoring software should have come with your motherboard. If you have no monitoring software, you can go to www.cpuid.com and get PC Wizard. PC Wizard is an easy to use program that will let you know what kind of temperatures you have, and what your fan speeds are at.

Causes

CPU overheating is usually caused by a failing CPU fan or improperly applied thermal paste. Fortunately, these 2 causes are easy to fix. If the CPU fan is dead, buy a new one and install it. If the thermal paste is improperly applied, remove the old paste off and apply new paste.

Another method is to take a house fan and open the case blowing the fan ... Read more

I am using Windows XP Professional on a stand alone pc.During the day I ctr alt del to lock the computer to run some reports. With the windows scheduler I schedule  "shutdown.exe -s -t 0"  to shut down the pc at 5pm.When using ctr alt del to lock the pc the shutdown.exe does not work. When the pc is not lock, the shutdown.exe works. The only program that is open before the shutdown.exe is another scheduler to run the reports. During the day, need to ctr alt del for security reasons.Looks like I need a script to ctr alt del to unlock the pc so that the shutdown.exe can work.Have look into the msdn library and could find any appropriate scirpt.Need some pointers on where the scripts are or there are other ways of shutting down the pc or someone has such a script. Thanks in advance.

Running Windows 98se and the screen saver locks up, whole system freezes up. I have ran scan disk, defrag and everything in Norton Utilities, by the way, Windows Scan Disk will never complete, always get 10 restart message, no programs are running when I try it. I did however have the JS Seeker virus get in the system but I removed it. The systen worked fine after until a few days ago. Think maybe I should reinstalling windows over itself or just go ahead and format the thing.

Ok, I have done everything I know how to do and am completely at a loss now. My pc consist of the following parts:

CPU:6700k
GPU: EVGA 980 TI SC.
MB Asus Z170PRO
RAM 16gb DDR4
SSD/HDD: Samsung 840 Pro 512 - WD Black Edition 2TB.

Temps on the pc are amazing they idle around 20-25 and load is about 39-44 on cpu and gpu is around 29-33 Idle and load about 60-70c. I have run SFC Scans I have reinstalled I have run mem test and am clueless on what else to do...Sometimes it will go all week without locking up and others its 2-3x in a day all the parts was bought earlier this year and assembled. The system is NOT over clocked.
I will be playing a game and I will sometimes hear a short quick static sound like ssszzht and bam entire system frozen. I have to hard shut down to get it to come back. I have checked the SSD and HDD health both showing 100% and strong running. I have checked for any driver updates and I am fully up2date. Any ideas?

Could this be from a USB hub maybe? I just thought of this idk if it is possible or not, Normally I can track down just about any problem but when I pull the event viewer or reliability log up it just simply says Windows has shut down unexpectedly... This due to I have to hard shut down cause it locked up.

Answer:System lock ups randomly.

I have also run the PC diagnostics tool from Asus for my board and everything has passed.

Hello code gurus,

I am running a W7 machine. I am finding that it runs to 100% CPU usage for no obvious reason.

Mouse movement happens but any attempt at open, closing or switching between screen becomes cumbersome. If it moves at all it might be 5 or 6 minutes. I am finding this even on local connections to my external hard drives. Sometimes I just have to do a hard re-boot as nothing responds at all.

Thinking it might be some goofy string, I have run CCleaner and Malwarebytes in the past. Neither seem to make a difference. Ran SuperAntiSpyware and found a few little trackers, got rid of them. Still having trouble.

I use FFox and IE browsers. I usually do have about 5 Skype windows open as that is part of my connection with my company. My video card has 1gig processor on board. So I don't think its the graphics.

I look at the various tabs of Task Manager and can see that FFox and Skype are at the top usage, followed by Thunderbird.

Is this an issue with a recent MSoft update maybe?

I ran the anti malware gambit to give you something to look at. Malwarebytes turned up nothing. Attaching the SuperAntiSpyware report from a few days ago. Not much there either. But maybe it will give you more clues.

Thanks to all of you for your tireless help.

From the get go we both had problems with usb devices not waking up after sleep mode. That was fixed by using a usb to ps2 adapter.

Over the course of the past few weeks both of the systems were freezing (locking up might be a better word since everything stops working mouse, keyboard etc etc) and a hard boot was the only way out of it. This seemed to occur around the same time as the latest vista security update (possibly a coincedance).

Hi

If I remember correctly, I heard of issues with the 780i that was causing all sorts of issues like this. Check out the Nvidia (or EVGA) forums for similar issues for one thing.
I know I remember reading about similar issues as this at Nvidia forums...
I know the 780i chipset was having issues...
I just can't be certain this is what you're experiencing, but I'd scan those forums and also keep us posted here as well. Between us we can hopefully get this sorted out, but I KNOW I remember reading about issues with the 780i based boards similar to this...

I'm trying to find some help in the best way to troubleshoot this problem. I have made a post already but I think I made it in the wrong section of the forum so I wanted to try here. I play an MMORGP called Lineage II. Just like any other server based game I access their servers to play. I pay for two seperate accounts. What I do is open one client, log onto the server, enter game with a character in windowed mode. I then go to start and open another client, log onto the server with my other account info and onto another character and play them both. We call it two boxing. I alt-tab back and forth with I need something from my other character. A huge number of people play this way and I haven't found anyone that has this problem and some of them have lower end hardware than I.
What will happen is every once in a while, I'll hit al-tab and everything just freezes. cursor, no keyboard funtion, nothing. I have to reset to fix. Sometimes it will work fine for hours, and then sometimes, it will happen every ten minutes. I am assuming it is a hardware issue but I have no idea how best to trouble shoot it. Any help would be greatly appreciated. What can I do to find the problem?
Here is my general system info.

When I insert a audio cd into the CDROM , the system frezes - the processor maxes out, CAD does no good, the mouse cursor is moveable but nothing happens when I click anywhere. No duplicates or erors in device manager.Disableing all background programs via EnditAll and StartUpCop helps none.Swapped slave/master -disconnected CDRW,no go.Scanned for virus (Norton and Trend Housecalls),clean booted, turned graphics and audio playback hardware acceleration to none.
Same lockup.During clean boot - CAD shows MSGSRV32.EXE not responding.Ran SFC,Norton System Check,Disk Doctor,Speed Disk,Scanreg,Regclean. I'm running out of ideas - if the CDROM itself were croaking, one would think the data and games wouldn't work(?)TIA for all suggestions.

Hello, for the past day my system has been locking up and crashing. Unlike a normal lock up, there is no "hour glass" or CPU usage spike. I hear a click sound from the tower (similar to the sound when a CD ROM closes) than everything freezes completely. Cannot move mouse, ctrl-alt-del, nothing. When this happens, the HDD light on my tower stays on, but I don't hear the HDD spinning. This has happened with various applications open, so I can't pin it on any application failing. The only way to recover from this is to do a hard shut down and restart. I have tried running my system in both Knoppix and XP (dual boot) and the problem occurs in both, so I am inclined to think that it is a hardware problem, but I cannot figure out what hardware is causing the problem.

I am running:
Athlon XP 2500 clocked at 1.833
Assus k7n8x Delux m/b

Maxtor 120 GB Slave IDE HDD (IDE 1)
LG 4081 DVD burner (IDE 2)
LG CD Burner (IDE 3)
350 watt generic power supply

I usually work in XP but occasionally boot into Knoppix. The problem has happend in both at varying times of operation. (eg, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes after boot)

CPU temp is good, 39c, case temp is good, 30c, and the SMART info for both HDD's shows 100% fitness / performance

I am inclined to think it is a power supply problem but I want to make sure before buying a new power supply.

Any help is mucho apreciated!

Hey everyone. Starting about a week ago my system started locking up at random times.

I started at my event viewer and found a few errors and and resolved nearly all of them could have caused this. however the problem still persists.

My display drivers are up to date

I dont believe anything else has updated around the time of the crashes.

I am at a loss as to what it could be. It locks up when its just idling and when its being used IE gaming, youtube, web browsing
Any help would be great! thanks

Answer:Total system lock up

I have mounted the usb 3 drivers and also network drivers via the USB. Although, I am still getting the same issue. Do you know what I need to do in order to get this to work. thanks.

Hi folks
Wonder if you guys can help here.
Pentium4..1gb ram..nvidia 6600gt graphics card.
Problem is the whole system has random freezes even when playing a relitivly small capacity game offline.
Have done the usual disk clean up & defrag.
I installed battlefield2 on 23/12/07 & have had problems ever since.
Uninstalled this program & still same problems.
Tried to do a system restore & cant go previous to battlefield install date.
Sometimes during the freeze the mouse pointer stops but still works behind the scenes.
Much like the arrow is frozen but movement is still behind the background & highlights things.Flying blind so as to speak.
Any help would be appreciated.

I received a used laptop but I was not given the password for the admin rights to it. Therefore, I cannot lock the computer when enabling the screen saver or prevent unauthorized use if someone uses it.

Is there a way I can get around this? Are there programs that can help me out with this?

I can access the internet after boot.....When I get out of internet explorer, I can't get back on. I can't do anything....turn off the computer, bring up task manager, nada. I have to do a hard shutdown every time. Not sure what caused it. The first signs of trouble I (having too much wine) bought regCure. It worked, but now nothing helps. I was going thru some old programs and decided to run FxMyDoom for some reason. After that I've had to do the hard shutdown thing. Suggestions? (I've done several restorations.)

Answer:[SOLVED] system lock.....

hello ,

this is a sure sign that your core registry has been corrupted

follow this link

http://www.informationweek.com/LP/sh...o=1&queryText=

you will not loose any data or programs / but make sure all your protection is working correctly ( you might have to reistall it / normally not )

now you will have to redo all of the updates from microsoft

but i would do this first after the repair link

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

start

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /purgecache) then enter / your pc will work like crazy / this helps in rebuiding the cache file (notice the space between (sfc & /)
#5 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & / )

now a scan will start , have your (Windows XP software disk ready ) your pc may ask for this disc when it starts or during the scan( so you must sit with the pc while this scan functions ) , if it does then incert the cd into one of your cd/rom/player's , your pc will then reconnize it and continue , you will then have to minimize the splash screen for the cd to see the scan , when the scan is finished y... Hello all,

I have a custom built PC that seems to have quite a unique issue. (Or so google thinks)

I am unable to load anything other than the bios. When i attempt to boot into windows the computer locks up. When i attempt to choose the repair computer in boot options it shows the windows logo, then the spinning dots and locks up. I attempt to load into the windows setup and the same follows. Spinning dots and locks up. I am currently attempting to format the usb with windows 10 i used to install windows in the first place however i fear more of the same will follow.

Could there be a fix for such an issue?

If more information required just ask.

Answer:Total system lock up

I attempt to load into the windows setup

Hi, do you mean you have tried to boot from a Win 10 bootable medium and this fails too?

If you haven't tried that, please do so.
If you have, please try removing your drive and booting from an external medium (e.g. DVD or flash drive).

History:
What happened prior to this? e.g. my PC was working normally and suddenly the power cut out... there was an update... etc

Also please complete your system specs- we don't even know if this is a laptop or a desktop.

my system not go shutdown when i properly shutdown and after shutdown reboot again but when i hibernate the go sleep and close other wise consume power continuously

Answer:my system not go to shutdown when i shutdown

jamia, FWIW, Windows seems to have been plagued with shutdown problems of one sort or another since day 1. I use a standalone shutdown proggie (for convenience) called 'Slawdog' (said to work on all versions). Get it free @:http://www.slawdog.com/products/sma...among other places. Works good and I drag/dropped the icon into my quick launch so it'd be handy for use.HTH.Ed in Texas.

I?ve recently bought a X1 Carbon with the infrared camera, which allows me to use Windows Hello facial recognition to logon, which works just fine. I use the Windows key + L to lock the laptop, but I?m finding with Windows Hello switched on, the infrared camera keeps searching for me. Does anyone know how I can stop the camera from looking for me when I lock the system? I looked in the settings just couldn?t see anything about disabling the infrared camera on system lock. Any help appreciated, thanks
