Exchange 2000, public folders in Outook 2000

Question: Exchange 2000, public folders in Outook 2000

I have 3 different public folders setup in Exchange 2000. Each one is a calendar for a conference room schedule. In Outlook 2000 I click on my calendar and I want to setup a meeting in one of these conference rooms. When I choose the conference room to "invite" them I cannot see the schedule it shows no information. How can I get this to show the information stored in the public folder calendar? Thanks

Preferred Solution: Exchange 2000, public folders in Outook 2000

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hiya

In Exchange 2000, as in Exchange 5.5, a public folder is a storage container for messages or information shared among all users in your organization. Public folders can still contain different types of information, and they are still part of the information store that Exchange clients and Web browsers can access. Now, Microsoft Office 2000 and custom applications can also access Exchange public folder stores. You can open and save documents directly in the public folder stores.

Hi!

We migrate 2 weeks ago to win 2003 and exchange 2003.

we make an image of the old win 2000 server + exchange 2000.

with that migration we forgot to backup our Public Folder from exchange (the public folder include
few importanc Contacts (200 .vcf) files).

I can browse the image from the old exchange.

I find out that the public folders are stored in this both files:

pub1.edb
pub1.stm

Now the question: How I can recovery the complete Public folder???

A client's SBS 2000 server recently crashed. Was able to rebuild the server and restore the Public Folders to Exchange 2000 using a Backup Exec backup. I can open the folder and see items but cannot open any items, cannot create items and cannot export items. I have reset all of the permissions via Exchange System manager properly but no luck. Lots of internet research has yielded nothing. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Greetings

I have set up a public folder that contains task items . I have
configured the public folder with new fields that will work with the reason that I am opening up this folder . Therefore, my initial TASK view is with 3 or 4 custom headings (4 columns with these new fields that I created as the titles) which will enable me to use this public folder as intended .

The only problem is , when another user opens it up, they do not see these fields . If they double click on the task item in the folder, the information is there ( on the window that opens up when you double click a task ) but the headings (columns I have set up ) are not .

How do I get all people with permissions to get the same view each time they access the folder on the LAN ?

Can you advise ?

Tom

I want to share email across a network with one other computer using Outlook 2000 on both PCs.

I've been told to create a public folder, but when I ask 'help' about 'Public Folders' it tells me to create a new folder in the public folder... but there isn't one there?

Help is taking me around in circles! How do I create a Public Folder in the first place?

Answer:Public Folders in Outlook 2000

Go to file
new
Outlook Data File.

Create the file in the directory you want it in.

Then unless I am mistaken, you will just need to create a shortcut to that folder on the outlook bar from both computers.

Public Folders appear if you are running a mail server such as MS exchange. They appear automatically once you have configured outlook to connect to the server IE:
assuming you have a mail server in place

go to outlook and reconfiure mail set up to access the exchange Post box.

If you havent got exchange or a similar post box system you wont have public folders

I am creating a trouble call service in OL2K called Request For Service. Let me tell you how its set up. I have three public folders, RFS (Request For Service), SSB (Software Support Branch), and a NOC folder(Network Operations Center). The user creates a request in the RFS folder. Depending on what kind of request it is, I want OL2K to automaticaly post it to the SSB/NOC folder. They pull what kind of request it is from a dropdown box on the initial form, and when finished hit post. Im not using emails, but posts. Im not really sure how to do this. Any help would be great.

I just recently installed exchange server and my outlook 2000 clients are having a problem. Email works fine any everything, however when the user is in a new message, they want to call users from their contacts list.

When they click on the "To..." button to bring up their contacts list, all it displays is the global address lists for exchange server, it doesn't have their personal contacts.

Normally to fix this you'd go to the folder list in outlook, right click and go to properties, outlook address book tab, and select "
show this folder as an email address book".

However when I go do this that option is grayed out. I can't select it.

I thought it was a rights thing, because my users are logged in as domain users, but my administrator account can't change it either.

Answer:Outlook 2000 and Exchange 2000

Before you try to show the Contacts folder as an address book, go to Tools/Services and add the "Outlook Address Book". When you right-click the contacts folder the checkbox should no longer be grayed out.

The message reached the recipient's e-mail system, but delivery was refused. Attempt to resend the message. If it still fails, contact your system administrator.

She was able to send the file to my account with no issues. Our domain is setup to be able to receive messages up to 15 MB. What is the most that public folders can accept? Is there a way to change the setting for public folders to allow larger files?

I am noticing that I cannot do this (or cannot see where to do this). I have some groups that are universal groups and some that are global groups. Neither appear to be an option to assign to a public folder only distribution groups. Any advice on setting up security groups on public folders or do I have to assign rights to individual users? So, I've come across a bizaar issue, and unsure how to resolve it. Also to note, I am not an Exchange enterprise admin, and the Exchange admins are unsure as to what caused the issue and why.

On to the issue:

Facility has a Public Folder called "Sick Call." It is a mail(box?) enabled, and has an email address of [email protected] which was setup through PF.

Now, there is still an email address out there called just [email protected]
You send an email to it, and no immediate bounceback, but nobody knows where the email goes. I tried yesterday, and finally after ~12 hours, I received a bounceback stating delayed delivery.

After finding absolutely nothing in Exchange System Manager or ADUC that referenced this [email protected] email address, I decided to try out ADExplorer.

I finally found where this email address exists, but unsure the reasoning.

Under: Domain -> [DC=yadda yadda] -> CN=Microsoft Exchange System Objects

I find a CN=Sick Call with a "Class" of "publicFolder"
There are also numerous CN=Sick Call 12345678, where 12345678 is a set of 8 random numbers. A total of 14 of these, actually.

In each one, they have a Mail attribute of "[email protected]" where "AB12" is 4 random numbers and/or letters.

What would cause this? What would be the fix? Simply delete the un-needed CNs?

Also to note, for clarification, there is only a single public folder called "Sick Call," which is actually the ... Read more

I've done quite a bit of searching without much success, so here is the question:

Is there a method to configure an Exchange 2003 public folder to only accept emails from trusted domains (e.g. @domain.com) or trusted email addresses?

We are already using Exchange's built in IMF with very good results at this point, so I'd prefer using Exchange native tools rather than third party software.

Answer:Exchange Public Folders & Spam filtering

You could jerry-rig it... make a real user account with the public folder's smtp address, setup your smtp restictions, then forward all email to a behind-the-scenes address that the public folder uses (but no one ever sees).

ugly, but cheap.

Hi all,

Looking for some advice. I am setting up a new server with Exchange 2010. Its a fresh build so no migration data or anything.
I know MS wants to drop public folders very soon which I use a lot for Mail Enabled folders for departments. Does anyone have an alternative to this? I have sen Sharepoint mentioned all over the place but Its not a function of Sharepoint.

So whats your alternative?

Thanks
G

Answer:Alternative to public folders in Exchange 2010

I haven't found a good replacement yet, which is probably the reason MS hasn't stopped using them yet although they do want to.

Sharepoint is for document collaboration, not a replacement for public folders. I say use them while they are still around

Hi Everyone. I am a first time poster, but have been searching the boards for a while now. I was wondering if I might be able to pick the brains of those who might be Exchange 2003 experts.

My issue is that I need to be able to block some users from being able to access the Public Folders when they log into Outlook. I tried to add a group of people to the permissions at the root level of the Public Folders Store in Exchange System Manager and removed 'Everyone' from having permissions, but that caused an issue where I couldn't remount the Public Store.

I know that Public Folders by their very nature are 'Public', meaning everyone should be able to see them, but I am in need to deny certain users the access. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi guys,

I am in the process of migrating a 2003 standard server to 2008 R2. I have installed Exchange 2010, got the mailboxes migrated, and sending and receiving mail. The hang up is that the public folders don't seem to be replicating. I have read numerous articles, and can't seem to find the cause of the issue. I have turned on max logging for transport, ran the usual powershell commands to begin replication, but still haven't had any luck. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I have an Exchange 2003 server to which I need to provide some highly mobile users real-time access (or nearly, within 5 minutes) to the public folder calendars.

OMA appears to have no functionality for accessing the public folders via its interface (I've checked from within IE).

But.. are there any devices out there which can survive standard OWA? Or perhaps just the public folder interface?

Or does anyone know of a mobile device that can be auto-synched (or active synched) to a public folder calendar?

Any suggestions? I've tried googling, but any terms that would match this provides useless garbage and hosting services advertising their capabilities..

(Note: Mobile device does NOT mean a phone necissarily.. RIM blackberrys, palms, et al. are preferred over phone units.)

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Mobile Access to Exchange based public folders?

Same Problem but Workaround Available

I'm using OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) for Exchange Server 2003 with Nokia 3650 Smart Phones (Symbian OS) and I have scoured the web for a solution that allows access to PUBLIC FOLDERS through OMA instead of OWA (I think Outlook Web Access would be too slow for unsupported celluar phones (cell phones with out EAS (Exchange Active Sync) compatability.

I find it very difficult to believe that Microsoft would invest all this development into OMA and it can't even access PUBLIC FOLDERS!! That make's OMA pretty useless since my original idea was to have road warriors out in the field accessing the companies public folder data such as contacts, schedules and tasks realtime.

What a bummer! Have you found a work around??? No where have I read that it can NOT be done. Can you confirm this??? Please let me know. I would be greatful!!!...

I don't think so, creating email aliases (which also deals with routing them) is something you'd need more permissions for than that.

We just finished most of a migration to Exchange 2003 Standard from 5.5 Enterprise. Everything has been moved over to the 2k3 server and the 5.5 server while still connected to the site, is not in use for anything.

When in Exchange System Mngr, if I drill down to Admin Groups\Folders\Public Folders, I get prompted to enter a username and password
even when logged in with the highest level domain admin account. After entering this, I get an error message that says:
Could not locate the root folder. Ensure that your default virtual server is running and its is configured correctly.

ID no: c103b405
Exchange System Manager
After clicking ok, if I right click and select system folders, the same thing happens.

All email operations seem to functioning normally, mail is flowing and all clients seem to be able to access mailboxes and public folders with no problem. I encountered this issue when beginning the process of decommissioning our Exchange 5.5 server.

Nothing is appearing in the event logs.

Has any one ever dealt with this issue or know where to start looking? Any help would be much appreciated.

Good Morning-
We use our Public Folders on a limited role but we are looking at establishing calendars within the Public Folders for such things as Conference Room booking and Conference Numbers bookings. We would like it to be as automated as possible so that we (Our IT Staff) do not have to moderate it all the time. Here is basically what we would like:

1. Setup the Public Folder Calendar to automatically accept the Meeting Request with the date/time when people plase it as a resource in the Meeting Request.

2. If there is a conflict in the time have the Calendar decline due to that. Obviously the Busy/Free scheduling would be great to view, but its not viewable for public folders due to the way its configured.

Thank you for your assistance.

Answer:Outlook 2000 Public & Private Calaners

I am just a bit confussed by your public calendar. In a workgroup environment in OL 2000. I would think you would want users creating their meetings on their individual calendars which should give them access to each meeting room's availability. This would likely eliminate the double booking. Why is there a public calendar?

We have exchange 2000 (never had exchange 5.5 or anyother exchange server) I have users out there that is complaining that they get an error message ever now and then. They are using Outlook 2000 (OS W2k) "Unable to update Free/Busy data" I have try many things and still no help. Upgrade users to Office SP3, Upgrade user to Outlook 2002, made changes to the server and changing there LegacyExchangeDN from Upper case to lower case.

Not sure what else to do. if anyone could please help let me know.
Thanks again guys.

Answer:Exchange 2000

Tim:

Close their Outlook.

Hit Start-Run and type:

outlook.exe /cleanfreebusy

and hit Enter.

(You MAY need to include the path to outlook.exe in the command line for it to work.)

If that does not work, try recreating their client profile, and if that doesn't work, recreate the mailbox on the exchange server.

Question: Exchange 2000 Help

I am running Exchange 2000 on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server machine and need help.
This Exchange server is also the Domain Controller and only host 2 mailboxes.

This is just a personal mailbox and wanted to try and set up Exchange in my ISP home network.

My question is how do I clear up all the messages stored on the mail server from the Exchange server ? I know that I can't view the messages pending on the server but I would think I can delete messages on the server w/o deleting and recreating the user.

Thanks for any help

Question: Exchange 2000

I noticed that the exchange server 2000 is slowing down. I checked the task manager and the CPU usage is always at %100. is this normal? i see the explorer.exe is using 70 to 90 all the time. shouldn't system idle process be the one that's taking up all of the CPU percentage most of the time, or is a server different from a workstation when it comes to CPU usage? Please let me know because i'm having a hard time navigating through the server.

Also, on the workstations, outlook is having a hard time retrieiving data from exchange due to that CPU usage. Please let me know what i can do.

Thank you in advance.

trying to get exchange 2000 installed on a win2K server, which is running as a virtual pc.

I am logged in as Administrator, and the server is a PDC, with DNS and Active Directory setup, as far as I know, correctly.

When I try to install exchange, i get the following error:

The Microsoft Exchange Forest Preperation cannot be assigned the action "Install" because:
Either you do not have permission to update the Active Directory Schema, or The Active Directory Service is too busy.

This is a single standalone server...no way the AD service is too busy, and I am the Administrator. What else could be going on?

[EDIT]
Never mind, the remote registry service was not running.

Ok this one is frustrating and I donít know if anyone can help but.

Recently our NTbackup and Veritas backup has stopped working. According to the tech at Veritas its stopping whenever it hits Exchange 2000 more specifically Information Storage. An attempt to do an NTbackup lead to the backup just sitting there, didnít freeze, didnít hang, just sat there doing nothing for 2hrs. The hardest part about it is its not spitting any error messages out, nothing in the event logs. I am completely stumped and any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.

Answer:Outlook 2000 and Exchange 5.5

Is your Exchange Server patched pat SR2? The uses mailbox could be excessively large, you have it wide open to the internet and someone is bouncing relayed spam off of your server or you just have a bad connection. Chech your inbound and outbound queues to see if someone is relaying messages off of your server or why it sits in queue for so long.

I have a little problem. The CEO of my company has two PCs. One in his office (NT4.0, Office2k pro) and one at home (Me, Office2k Pro, cable modem, Cisco VPN Client 3.1).

The problem is when he opens Outlook on his home computer, all the emails get sucked out of his inbox. I sent mail to his address, looked at it on his office pc, and after 2-3 minutes, it disappears.

This doesn't happen when his home pc is not running Outlook. Also it just started happening yesterday and nothing has been changed.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Hey, everyone...I hope someone can help me on this thing. I'm a bit of a fledgling to Exchange Server 2000 (I have some experience in the setup and database repairing [eseutil is a pain in the ***]). I have a bit of a scenario that I can't seem to get an answer on from one of my exchange sources, and wanted to post it here and see if I can get a hand. Here's what we have:

My company is divided into two divisions. The parent company holds the company's e-mail server in house (they are right next door to us so access to the main mail server is not a problem). Despite the split of divisions, we all use the same e-mail address naming scheme (example: @bob123.com). In our office, I have set up an exchange server of our own to receive the mail to pull the mail from the main server for only our division. (example...[email protected] is set up on the main server and I want to be able to have our exchange server pull down her e-mail only to ours). We are on seperate networks and the domain names for the two servers are different (mail server is mail.bob123.com and my server is mail.bob123oem.local). There seems to be some connectivity problems between the two servers and I cannot seem to be able to get the mail from the main server to our server.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Brian

Answer:Exchange 2000 server

Are you using AD? Is there a trust between the two domains? Do both email servers live in the same domain? What prompted setting up a second email server strickly for one company's email?

Ultimately, what are you trying to do with your email? I don't think a second server is required for what you need (if my assumptions are correct)....

There isn't a forum to really post this in that's conpletely relevent, but this is the closest I could find around here.

I'm having a problem with Exchange Server 2000, where the SMTP connector is forwarding all mail to another server. I did this initially to use GFI MailEssentials(SPAM filter) with my Exchange 5.5 server. After I upgraded to Exchange Server 2000, I took out the forwarding configuration, but the (exchange) server is still forwarding to the other server. I searched google(web and usenet) for hours and haven't found a thing about this. Does anyone have any idea what I can try, or know of an Exchange Server forum that might be more help?

Hello All,

I have an Exchange 2000 (SP4)SBS server: lately we've experienced a lot of problems sending email out using SMTP. eMails are either delayed, undeliverable or take around 1 hour to reach destination. The SMTP hosts are telling me there is an internal issue, so I start looking at DNS. (Web browsing seems unaffected).
The DNS Event viewer is giving me event id 5501:"The DNS server encountered a bad packet from 217.79.96.70....etc", in the App Log I get: event id 984 nd id 4003 "the domain etc.com is unreachable" for several domain names.

All the info I found refers to the use of NSLOOKUP as a troubleshooting tool. I tried this and when I run:
set q=mx
msn.com
server: servername
address: 217.79.96.70

DNS request timed out

So clearly there is something wrong, however I do not know where to take this!
I have double checked all instances of DNS server settings in the server (Internet connector Wizard) and in the SMTP connector on Exchange...

Another weird thing to note: when using IPCONFIG /ALL, the DNS servers were wrong (they were set to our old provider), using the Internet Config Wizard to change these had no effect (used /FlushDNS and /RegisterDNS afterwards), I ended up changing these manually in the Network Connections, TCP-IP Properties for the interface card.

I know this is not an easy one and I would be grateful if someone would point me in the right direction. I also understand that there could be a lot of info required and I... Read more

Answer:Exchange 2000 and DNS problem

I have now run the "Exchange Troubleshooting Assistant" on exchange, because the" UNreachable Destination" queue is stacking up:

The DNS Recodr Analysis result reported:
No host record found for SMTP instance "Default SMTP Virtual Server"
No Pointer record found for address 192.168.16.2 (our local server)

Deeply-nested OWA Request Can Consume Server CPU Availability

A security vulnerability exists in Exchange 2000 Outlook Web Access,
because it will accept and process a request for an item in an
authenticated user's mailbox without verifying first that the
folder structure is valid. An attacker could mount a denial of
service attack by repeatedly levying a request for a non-existent
but deeply nested folder in his own mailbox

My company has a client who's having trouble with their Exchange 2000 server. It was hit with the Nimda virus and they ended up having to rebuild. Now, some emails make it to their destination and some get bounced back.

Within the Chicago branch of this company everything works properly. Users can send, receive, and reply to all email sent to or from any user within that branch. The Chicago server routes email to all other branches of this company. Users in LA can send and receive email to and from the Chicago branch. But, when they send email to the SF branch, it gets stuck in a queue in Chicago.

Email from outside companies is also affected. They can receive email from outside addresses and can reply to those messages but only if the message WAS NOT addressed to a group of users. I could send email to an individual within the company and they could reply to me. But, if I sent it to a group of people, a user there can't perform a "reply to all." The email gets bounced back to them.

Our Exchange guru is on vacation today so is there anyone who could give me some guidance until he returns? I had guessed it was something to do with Connectors but I have very little experience with Exchange and close to none with Exchange 2000.

Sorry for the long post!

Hi all.... i hope someone can shed some light on this for me

I am having problems with sending to certain domains due to Exchange being unable to resolve MX records for those domains.

An example domain that this happens on is eircom.net

If i do an NSLookup from the exchange machine i get the following

====================================
C:\> nslookup eircom.net
Server: res4.dns.uk.psi.net
Address: 154.15.243.2

Name: eircom.net
C:\>
====================================

Yep it doesn't resolve and IP.....

I switch on debug mode in NSLookup and it will find the SOA but wont come back with any IP's

So i then tried to do NSLookups by Type "Set Type=MX"

and it would return the MX records for eircom.net
I have tried many DNS servers from alot of connections and they all act the same..... and the fact remains that my E2K Server can't send email to [email protected]

Any help would be great

Nik

I am running Exchange 2000, with end-user's using Outlook XP or OWA. I need to forward all email received in a certain mailbox to an internet email address.

AD Users and Computers will allow me to forward it to another mailbox within Active Directory, but not an external email address.

Creating a rule in Outlook XP is unsuccessful, because the rule is not applied until Outlook is opened and the email is downloaded.

Any ideas/suggestions appreciated. I'm stumped.

Kevin

Answer:Exchange 2000 / Outlook XP

Not necessarily. Creating a rule in Outlook XP can be successful if you're using C/W Outlook as a client for Exchange and if the new rule could be run either on the client or on the server.

A dialog box should have appear that says, "The rules on this machine do not match the rules on your Exchange server. Only one set of rules can be kept. You will usually want to keep the rules on the server.
Which rules do you want to keep?"
You're going to have three options, Client, Server, and Cancel.
Choose Server so the client computer doesn't need to be turned on.

Hello,

I am hoping there is an Exchange 2000 guru out there than can give me a hand. I just started a job to replace an IT Admin that left the company under "unfavorable" conditions. We are having an issue with getting e-mail from external e-mail addresses, but internal e-mails go through just fine, and we can e-mail out okay as well. I have verified that our Firewall is forwarding port 25 to the correct IP address (our Exchange 2000 server), and I have figured out that we use a third party for our e-mail virus scanning and anti spam. So basically, when someone sends and e-mail to an address with the "Heartslc.com" domain, it filters through our third party, then forwards to our exchange box. I was able to get a log from this third party, and this is what they sent me:

Current Deferrals (within last 30 minutes) for HEARTSLC.COM: 254

Hiya

Tool for issues discussed in Q296088

Specific support tool to create a truncated copy of a .pst file allowing some recovery when the file size has reached over 2 gig. The copy does not have all the original data because the tool cuts a user defined amount of data from the file.

System Requirements

Recovery Limitations of the 2 GB Truncation Utility:

You must have 2 GB of free hard disk space (to make a copy of the .pst file).
The utility truncates the .pst file to under 2 GB. To have enough working space, truncate the file between 20 to 25 megabytes (MB) less than the 2 GB limit. The truncated data is removed from the new copy, which means some messages are missing from the recovered copy.

Will someone please explain to me briefly what the difference is between all of these? Why would one want one over the other?

I guess that Windows 2000 is sort of like NT Workstation. If not, please tell me.

And what is the difference between Windows 2000 Server and 2000 Advanced Server?

Answer:{Advice Offered} - Windows 2000 Professional, 2000 Server, 2000 Anvanced Server--the difference?

Greetings

Win2K Professional is, indeed, just NT Workstation 5.0

The real difference between Win2K Server and Win2K Advanced Server is scalability. To quote a CNET article: "Three versions of the operating system will be available next week (it's an old article): Windows 2000 Professional, aimed at PCs and workstations; Windows 2000 Server, for file-and-print servers; and Windows 2000 Advanced Server, supporting clustering, which is a way of making several systems act as a single, more powerful computer.

To quote the FAQ from www.winmag.com:
Windows 2000 Professional is the workstation edition of Windows 2000. This is basically Windows NT Workstation 5.0, although Win2K Professional of course includes all of the new technologies for Win2K.

Windows 2000 Server/Advanced Server is the server edition of Windows 2000, which is designed to serve small- to mid-sized businesses and workgroups. Server supports up to 4GB of physical RAM and up to 4 processors per computer. Advanced Server supports up to 8GB of RAM and 8 processors per computer.

Windows 2000 Datacenter Server is designed for large businesses and computer clusters. Datacenter supports up to 32 processors per computer and up to 64GB of RAM, as well as built-in clustering and load-balancing features.

Is that what you wanted?

Cheers

Hi, this is the first time that i've posted here... or anywhere, so lets give it a go.
About 8 months ago I got hired on at a company that had previously not had an in house IT staff. They had used an outside company for years, and then moved to another company about 6 months before I came on board.

We have an Exchange 2000 server running on Windows 2000, fully updated and patched systems.
Normally, this server runs quite fine. It's only function is Exchange and a backup of itself at night. There are separate servers here for other functions, a windows 2000 File server and Database server, and the recent replacement of the Terminal Server (used to be a 2000) with a Windows 2003 R2 Terminal Server. Again, its only function is Terminal Services for roughly about 50 users.

Mail here has been flakey, even though Exchange reports no problems, on and off since i got here, I cleaned up the server somewhat and fixed whatever problems were reported in the EV. But every once in a while, clients lose connection with the Exchange server, not all clients either. At the same time, no clients can connect either. The office is about half and half, thin clients/Desktops. We do not use Cached mode. Also, every once in a while we get a failed message with a report back that relay is not allowed, or temporarily unable to deliver, or better yet, an internal email being routed outside, to our outside POP3 accounts, just to be asked to route back to our server. We do not have the MX rec... Read more

Ok, I found the answer on my own, by fluke. Thought that I would post it here. Funny, this is something that I had no idea about.
Exchange Full Package Enterprise edition, does not have this size limitation. Therefore, it will not hit that cap off and dismount.

Here is information on how to know what version you are running, as no where in the MMC of Exchange, does it give you a version.

In the registry, located the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall

I set up a Win2k box, installed Active Directory, and am now trying to install Exchange 2000 on it. Every time I do, it errors out and gives me this error:

"Setup failed while installing sub-component Microsoft Windows 2000 Active Directory schema update with error code 0xC1037AE6 (Please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step again."

I have located and looked at the logs, and they have no info in them at all. I am logged in as Admin, and of course, the tech article for Microsoft (http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=280178) just says it is because I am breaking connection to the Domain Controller.. Funny becuase the machine it is installing on IS the DC. Sooo anyone have anything to remedy this?

Hey guys,
I'm running Exch2000 in a Win2000 domain (AD enabled).
As you know, most viruses and spam fake the TO: and FROM: field.
What I'm getting is boatloads of SMTP queues trying to send NDR's to sites that don't exist, and because the recipient no longer works for the company.
I've lowered the retry intervals as much as I can so they don't queue up for days, but is there a way to have Exchange just drop an email for an ex-employee, without sending the NDR? Or have it at least do a reverse DNS check, and drop the email if the FROM: turns out to not exist?

Answer:Exchange 2000 and automatic NDRs...

Go to http://www.vamsoft.com and buy ORF (Open Relay Filter). Don't bother with the demo BUY it.

This will let you block (among other things) all emails addressed to non-existant AD uesrs.

You can also add blacklist blocking and more.

Well worth the $99.

I run it at work on an Exchange 2000 server and I'm seeing 75-85% of all incoming mail blocked as spam...and I've looked at the logs, etc and it's legit. Tons of stuff addressed to AD users we no longer have, etc. We had users that would get over 100 spam emails a day that are now down to 5 or so daily.

Note you can whitelist senders/IPs, etc to be sure email from trusted sources is never blocked.

Sorry if I sound like a commercial, but it's a great little piece of software if you are running Exchange 2000. It will do what you want and more

Have Exchange 2000 working in my home lab. Have a LinkSys NAT router/cable modem to the internet. I do NOT have a registered domain out on the internet. Question: Is it possible to send an e-mail to my exchange server via [email protected] (public IP addess) ? I can't get that to work. Also when I send an e-mail to my [email protected] account from my local OutLook it does not arrive.

Internally the Exchange Server works with OutLook just fine.

I have Active Directory e-mail enabled accounts set up and ports opened on my router but no luck.

Any e-mail savy folks willing to help ? I really would like to use my Exchange server for real... if even in a crude way.

Thanks

When new users are added to our domain and log into a XP Pro workstation that has Outlook 2002 installed they are prompted for all of the Exchange server connection info. Up til recently all of this was unnecessary. Users were automatically connected to their mailboxes. As far as we can tell, we didn't change anything. Any ideas where I should be looking?

Answer:Exchange 2000 / Outlook 2002

Only roaming profiles are automatically set up.

We have a server running Microsoft Exchange 2000. We have found that one of our distribution groups contains no members. If e-mail is sent to this distribution group, what happens to the e-mail? People do not receive any bouncebacks. Is there a way to check and see if the e-mail is sitting in a queue or does the system just automatically drop them with no bounceback?

I was asked if my system is secure enough to be sending Personal information and numbers through my Exchange server. I am assuming we just need to make sure we have some kind of e-mail encryption. How can I tell what encryption I have or how secure it is? Or how do I turn it on?

This patch provides a utility that allows administrators to programmatically restrict connecting IP addresses on any Exchange 2000 SMTP Virtual Server within the Exchange organization. I am trying to create email distribution lists in Exchange 2000 and I don't know how to do it. I have set up 2 distribution groups, but they don't show up in the Outlook global addresses.
Thanks for any help.

Answer:Exchange 2000 Distribution Lists

My distribution group wasn't "mail enabled." You have to leave the defaults when you create the group.
