Laptop Screen Backlight(?) Issue

Question: Laptop Screen Backlight(?) Issue

Peering at the screen, you can tell it's displaying. Sadly, it's only bright enough to see for a brief moment.

I'm running into the D-Sub on the TV and have the CRT/LCD setting to display on both the laptop monitor and the TV. TV is a clear picture and the laptop I'm guessing from reading I've been doing is lacking the backlight.

History: No updates have been done in the timeframe that the monitor issues surfaced. No drivers changed, no programs installed (except vaguely possibly ExamDiff and one or two portable apps (http://portableapps.com/).

A week or two ago, I noticed the screen seemed to be shadowed in one area but the shadow seemed to go away if you brightened the screen all the way. Also, the screen seemed to be flickering, like lightbulbs sometimes do before blowing, that really quick, irritating flickering. This didn't usually last long, maybe 30 seconds at the most and it would settle down, ditto the shadowing.

Now, if I switch between CRT/LCD options or press then release the little screen switch near the hinge (the one that turns off the monitor if you close the lid), I tend to get a very quick proper display on the laptop monitor before it goes dark again with the displayed information impossible to read.

The issue is the same through a hibernate and resume, brief flashes of a clear screen and then only the vague outline can be seen.

A fan came on a while ago but I don't know what fans this has so can't state which it is. A month or so ago, a fan was making a considerable noise and would make less or more depending on the angle of the laptop and finally shut up. I have no reason to believe it died because I've only ever heard one fan from this laptop and it's in the same area as the one that started up tonight.

I've been smelling one or more odd smells recently but I'm not sure if it's the new insecticide bait I'm using or around the laptop itself.

I have a cat that as the weather has cooled has taken to sitting on the laptop again if I'm not around, either the keyboard if I forget to lower the lid enough to stop her, and more recently, she's figured out she can climb on the lid and it closes and she sits on that instead. (Thank goodness the other two cats haven't learned laptops are "made of warm!") Personally would be surprised if that's made any difference but it's part of the history of the laptop so I offer it for what it's worth.

Laptop specs:
Dell Latitude D530
Vista Business, up to date maybe 2-3 months ago (limited bandwidth equals updating only in certain locations)
Not all the drivers that should be installed because for some reason, I didn't seem able to find them at Dell when I set up this laptop. Recently I did but I haven't made any changes. The only driver that it keeps wanting to install, as far as I can tell, is the wifi. (If I turn off the wifi (Fn + F2) and then on again, it pops up a Found New Hardware. However, wifi works normally so I don't really know what the problem is that it keeps wanting to install it.)

So, with all that info, what's the most likely thing I'm dealing with, please? If it involves pulling open the laptop, how hard is that? If soldering is involved, please give details on temperature required because I now own a variable temp soldering iron, though I haven't done all that much soldering in my life so reasonable details would be appreciated.

Thanks, folks.

Preferred Solution: Laptop Screen Backlight(?) Issue

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

There are 100s of tutorials out there. It is more scary (if you've never done it before) than hard. https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=replacing+ccfl+backlight

I generally recommend replacing both the inverter and CCFL while you have it torn apart.

I have a Dell Inspiron 17RSE laptop (the SE = special edition of the 17R (7720)). Lightning stroke the router which was connected to my laptop through an Ethernet cable. The laptop was off during the strike, but afterwards the router was fried and the laptop screen did not power on (or so I thought) when the laptop was powered on. I then connected an external monitor to the VGA out, and this works. The graphics card also seems to be picked up correctly inside speccy/HWMonitor/Everest and CUDA acceleration works inside Adobe Premiere Pro, so I guess I can rule out a fried GPU. The monitor Part Number is N173HGE L-11 rev.2 (ChiMei) --- and in Everest it says Manufacturer: HDKPVƒ173HGE --- http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/N173HGE-L11/. As I said initially I thought the screen was completely blank, but upon shining a light on the screen I can see an image on the screen, just very faint (btw the display brightness is set to max). I then looked for the LCD power inverter, but realised the screen is a LED screen so there is no inverter. So I'm thinking it could be a burned out fuse near the LCD connector cable on the motherboard itself, or the LED backlight is burned out.
What do you think?
Other changes in my laptop state since the lightning strike:

1) the laptop seems to overheat when running Adobe Premiere Pro -- which is set to use GPU acceleration. Using HWMonitor it seems to be the CPU, not the GPU, that overheats and all 8 threads of the CPU... Read more

Answer:Laptop LED screen only very faintly lit. LED backlight problem or other issue?

A fuse would make sense. Seems like you know what you're doing, so take the thing apart locate said fuse and put a multimeter across it, see the resistance.

I have a  problem with a G560 as seen here:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004FLYN7G (Note my review, which I changed after the seller gave me a full refund. They suck at packaging things.)When I turn it on, i see no screen, but if you put a flash light to the screen, you can see there is one faintly. It has been this way since the very first time I powered it up. Hooking up an external monitor verified that the computer works. After getting the laptop set up the way I wanted I figured I would try to fix it since it cost me so little and I didn't want to wait for a new lappy seeing how I am in afghanistan, (I am in the Army) and delivery of stuff takes time. I ordered a brand new screen hoping to fix this issue. if it is wiring, i have no idea what I am going to do. what wiring piece would i replace? I watched this to try and help me:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GLaiMj40Jo what parts would i order? Just a screen? If the screen doesnt fix the issue, what else could it be? Should I try reformaing the HD because of a possible I/O issue? What I am trying to do is find out what to do.

Answer:Issue with no backlight on G560 Screen

I think you are on the right track, ordering a new screen. In the past, I would have said replace the inverter, but I think that model has a LED screen, yes?The symptom, dim image, is exactly what I haveseen with a bad inverter. As for wiring, I think there is only a cable between panel and motherboard.http://www.lenovospareparts.com/31042430--LCD-LED-Cable_p_42.html

Hi,

I've got a Satellite Pro L10 with a backlight issue - the screen is very dark.
How do I confirm if it's the backlights themselves that have failed or the backlight inverter board?

Also, can someone point me in the right direction for a copy of the workshop manual?

Many thanks!

Answer:Satellite Pro L10 backlight issue - the screen is very dark

Hi

As you said this issue could be related to the FL inverter malfunction and in most cases the FL inverter must be replaced.
This is a little bit tricky and it?s not advisable trying to replace it at your own hand because you could damage the notebooks screen.
Therefore I would really recommend contacting an Toshiba ASP because of two important reasons:
First reason is that you could order the compatible FL inverter from the ASP and the second reasons is that an ASP could provide an help how to replace such part.

If you want to know how and where it?s placed then you could check this page:
http://www.irisvista.com/tech/laptops/Toshiba-Satellite-A105/remove-replace-LCD-screen-1.htm

Of course this page shows only the instruction wow to remove and replace Satellite A105 FL inverter but the procedure is not very different from Sat L10.

But as I said above; if you have no experience don?t do anything what could damage the notebook!!!

My Thinkpad T540p i5-4430 1920 x 1080 Screen has an issue with it's backlight.Only the rightmost side of the screen is visible when AC power is connected (which makes it barely useable), and when in battery mode the screen is completely black. Is this something that can be fixed on the cheap? Is it an inverter problem? Is it a fuse problem? Is it a cable problem? Any idea what could be causing the issue and how to fix it? Any help or pointers on how to fix this would be really welcomed. It's out of warranty, so I'm okay with opening it up if need be.  RegardsAlan

Answer:ThinkPad T540p Screen backlight Issue

It is hard to be sure without seeing it, but if the screen is lighted on one side under AC, it has to be the panel or the motherboard. Do you have a warranty?

I had a customer dropp off an Inspiron 1525 laptop due to the "not charging issue". Therefore, the dc jack power board was replaced. However, when the laptop was put back together and turned on, we noticed that the LCD was extremely dark as though the backlight was shot.
When we hooked up the 1525 to an external monitor, it worked great. We thought it was the inverter so we replaced it and still "no backlight"! We changed the lcd cable and still "no backlight". I even swapped out the LCD screen and still "no backlight". I tried the original LCD screen on an inspiron E1505 and it worked great. What the heck is going on? I even tried connecting the LCD screen to another 1525 motherboard that we had around collecting dust and still no backlight. I'm extremely upset at this point. This problem seems to defy all logic to me. Obviously the LCD Screen and inverter are fully working.. Any thoughts? Is there somekind of weird issue that only dell knows how to fix. I'm thinking of getting another 1525 motherboard but fearful it will not fix the problem. What am I missing?

Answer:Inspiron 1525 Backlight issue but inverter and screen are good!?!?

We are having the same issue.  Checked the inverter, screen, and cables... beginning to suspect the lid switch.  Has anyone else had this issue for know where the lid switch is?

On my new Latitude E7470, I have noticed a slight variation in colour temperature or tint on the left and right sides of the screen, more so on the left. It is not severe by any means, but definitely noticeable when, for example, editing two word documents side by side. See pic below:

I guess what I'm asking is: is this normal? If not, can I expect it to be fixed with a screen replacement?
Thanks.

Here's the problem I'm having with my laptop. I turn it on and you see it initially come on with all the text: i.e. Dell logo, drives connected, ram, etc. It then goes blank. I thought something was wrong with the motherboard, but if you wait a bit you can hear Windows start up. If you look closely at the screen you can still see everything: desktop, shortcuts, taskbar, everything. It is almost as if there is no backlight.

Like every laptop there is a small button of some sort near the hinge of the screen that when pressed turns the screen off for when you close the lid. If I push this down for a second and then release, the screen shows up again like normal, but then it will immediately turn back off (backlight off ,but can still see everything if looking closely).

I can plug up a secondary monitor and this works fine. When I plug up the monitor I have to hit the 'Fn' key and the 'crt/lcd' button to get it to link. Curiously, the laptop screen flickers on for a second, but then goes black again.

Anyone with an idea of what is going on? Is it just the switch near the hinge that is the problem? I was thinking maybe it was the switch or spring in the switch getting old and always being in the state of pressed down. Pushing the button and releasing only temporarily springs it up for the screen to come on, but drops back down. I was thinking if it were just this switch, maybe I could just remove it and then screen would work again.

My laptop updated itself when I turned it on, and immediately after this the screen went black. I shone a torch on the screen and can faintly see the login screen, however I cannot get the screen any brighter. Having only had my laptop for a month I am rather annoyed this issue has occurred so quickly.

Do I have to replace the LCD screen?

Hello everybody. I'm hoping to get suggestions on what may be causing this issue. When I turn on the laptop, the screen works but there is no backlight. Then I connect a monitor, and that turns the backlight on. Then I can disconnect monitor, and use laptop normally until I turn it off. Once it (backlight) came on by itself, once it came on after coming out of standby, and once it came on as if nothing was wrong straight away. Any ideas? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. This laptop has been an absolute legend, i've had it for a few years and I'm extremely impressed with its resistance. It has been dropped while on from table height at least 3 times without any damage. It has survived a burst pipe leaking onto the keyboard for hours and then being turned on while wet - producing a nice electric burn smell. But I just dried it out and then it was good to go again. The touchpad left and right click buttons are long gone but that doesn't bother me too much. It's shabby but it works and I love it, it's like Jason Vorhees.

Hi, I recently updated my DELL L502X to Windows 10 from Windows 7. All drivers have been installed and Device Manager shows no problem. However I'm seeing a weird issue. I'm using an external monitor (ASUS) through HDMI. I'm setting the display to show on external monitor only. In Windows 7, everything works fine. After the Windows boot logo disappears, laptop screen turns off and external monitor turns on. In Windows 10, however, there is an issue. After boot logo disappears, external monitor turns on, and laptop screen turns off - but not completely. There is no content anymore but the back light is still on. If I switch the display mode to Duplicate or Extend (just to turn on the laptop screen) and switch back to Second Monitor Only, the laptop screen can turn off completely.

Has anyone seen a problem like this? Both monitors are shown as Generic PnP Monitors in Device Manager. I don't know if this is a driver problem or something related to my laptop. The bottom line is in Windows 7 there is no such a problem.

Any suggestion or help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Answer:Laptop screen backlight doesn't turn off

This is most likely a bug in Windows 10, but it shouldn't cause any harm. Could be that Windows 10's external monitor feature probably has different settings than Windows 7, such as keeping some power in the other screen. Anyways why would you care? Just live your life with the plug in the wall and have fun with Windows 10!
Have fun!

Merry Christmas Team.

My little brother came home from work one night and now is screen doesn't work at all. no flickering, backlight etc. I connected it top the TV via HDMI and even that didn't show up anything.

How high are the chances that his graphics card has died?

Cheers
Gameover.

Answer:Laptop Screen doesn't work, No Backlight

There aren't really graphics cards in laptops, they are built in to the motherboard. So, if it isn't displaying anything even when on the bios or start screen, it may be the motherboard that is bad.

Sooooo.... I'm working on a free hand-me-down laptop. Had a hard drive problem, which I fixed and happened to find 4GB of RAM to toss into it... and what do ya know, the screen starts messing up as soon as I fixed it...

The laptop is not very old so I would like to fix it... onto my problem.

The screen sort of "flickers" and "moves around" and also has a pink tint to it every once in awhile. The screen is this way as soon as I power on the laptop, and having it plugged into the wall proves no difference. Another strange thing is, if I leave it on, after about 5-10 minutes its works perfect, but only for about 15 seconds, then back to like the picture above.

- Tried hooking it up to my desktop monitor, works great.
- Took this thing apart, checked the all of the wire connections, seem to be solid and fooling with them with the lappy on did no justice. I'm stumped basically.

So now I'm wondering, backlight or inverter?

EDIT: Oops forgot the laptop info

Noticed that while messing with the video cable to the LCD made the screen go in and out.....
Ordered a new LCD cable.... no fix

Answer:Acer Laptop Screen Problem-Inverter or Backlight

Normally when the backlight goes out, it will affect the full screen. It can flicker or go out completely. This can be checked with a flashlight held up to a text area on screen and looking for the contrasting image on the LCD. From the way you describe the working then stopping, it sounds to me like the inverter is building up a charge then letting go.

Hi
I have a 2 year old sony vaio vgn fz11s, 4 weeks ago, blue and green lines appeared on the screen and the laptop turned itself off. I was able (with gooogle) to identify the graphics cards as the fault and managed to get the card replaced free of charge by Sony (it was a known fault on the card that Sony did not feel warranted a recall).
I recieved the laptop back after 3 days and all was well for 4 days. THEN. the backlight on the monitor failed and there was no output through the VGA or HDMI ports.
I sent the laptop back to Sony believing that the Graphics card was still the fault.
Today I recieved a quote for repair for ?780 ouch..
Question: Can the new card be responsible for this new problem and does the lack of output from the VGA and HDMI ports still mean that the Graphics card is not working properly
Question:- Can a new graphics card cause a blown backlight.
I am extremely gratefull for any assistance you can give. (Sony require ?150 just for Laptop assessment)
Thank you
Shaun

Answer:Can a new laptop graphics card cause the backlight on the screen to blow

I don't know how you guys do it in Europe but whenever something goes wrong after a product gets repaired in the U.S., there's a 30 warranty for repair and parts......
Sony should have tested the laptop out for QC after repairing it and before shipping it back to you so it the graphics card shouldn't be the problem

Hi,I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 Series laptop around about November time last year, and after a BIOS update a couple months ago or so it now will randomly go to a black screen, but the backlight is still on. The BIOS update being near the time that this began to happen may be a coincidence, but it was the only real change during this period. On this black screen, I have no cursor and none of the buttons on my keyboard do anything. The only solution I've found is to hold in the power button to shut the whole system down.
There doesn't seem to be a particular pattern as to when this problem occurs, it will just randomly go black.
This has happened around about 6/7 times in the past few months. All the events did occur late at night though (past midnight). However, this could just be because I usually sit on my laptop longer at night time, and therefore that increases the chances of it happening.
Due to many "Black Screen Crashing" problems with Windows 10 - that aren't the same as my problem - a google search did not help.
System Specs are as follows:
System Model Inspiron 7559
OS Name Microsoft Windows 10 Home
Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700HQ CPU @ 2.60GHz, 2601 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Processor(s)
BIOS Mode UEFI
Ram - 8GB
Graphics Card - GeForce GTX 960m
Thanks,Steven

Try system diagnostics to see if it finds any problem in the components:

Press F12 after power on

You can also check Windows Event Viewer for any error message that was logged when the black screen crash happened.

My sister dropped her T410 and cracked the LCD screen, which clearly was not covered under the basic warranty.  The $950 quote for repair was a little steep (basically the cost of the laptop) so we decided to try a repair ourselves.  I replaced the LCD screen with a model suggested by the Lenovo rep.  With the new screen in place, the backlight doesn't function at all (can see information on the screen with a flashlight but otherwise nothing).  I also put the old screen back in (which previously was backlit despite being cracked) and observed the same problem.  I made sure the LCD cable was seated firmly at both ends. Considering things as they stand now, my question is about the best route to take from here.  As I understand it, since the LED backlight is powered by the system board, we either buy a new system board or use this laptop as a "desktop" attached to a standalone monitor.  Replacing the LED sub card seems questionable for this particular problem (saw another post here with that conclusion).  We could replace the LCD cable, but it seems to me more likely that the fuse on the motherboard is blown.  If it comes down to motherboard vs. desktop use, we'll probably avoid the motherboard replacement since it is somewhat expensive. Am I missing any obvious ideas?  Should I consider replacing the LCD cable more seriously?  Is the LED sub card more relevant to the LCD/backlight than I think?  I'm hoping t... Hello, So I have a user that just recently started to have an issue.  The laptop is fine (beyond the sound issues with the X230 which aren't solved (sound issue)), but if the user puts the laptop in the docking station with the laptop lid/screen closed/down, the external monitor only displays the desktop background but no login screen or desktop icons. This user has Windows 7 Pro. on it, I just installed the latest video driver from Lenovo's site and that didn't help.  I made sure the screens were set to clone and not extended displays. When the user flips up the laptop screen/lid, both screens are cloned and all is fine.  Supposedly this just started to happen a few days ago. But if the user has the laptop turned off, puts it in the docking station, closes the lid and turns the laptop on, the external monitor works just fine. I've changed clone to extended desktop just to see if that would help any but it didn't.  Set her back to cloned displays. Only other thing I can think of doing is to make sure the external monitor's resolution is set right but...don't understand what's going on.... Thoughts?

Answer:x230 (2320) laptop issue with external monitor when laptop lid/screen is up

Hi, cftech

My first recommendation would be to make sure that the BIOS and chipset drivers are the latest version. Since the external monitor works, just only certain circumstances, this is most likely a software issue of some sort. The BIOS can be found here and the chipset here.

Also, if possible, could you have the user try to connect to the external monitor without the docking station? I'm just curious if the docking station could have something to do with the issue,

Best of luck, and let me know how it goes
Adam

Question: backlight issue

Hi,
my friend has just brought me his emachines e527 laptop to me with what he described as a "dead screen", the screen is "not" dead !! the backlight is not working,I've got the screen stripped and checked the obvious i.e ... connections/cables and all is as it should be!!! I am now believing that it is the inverter that is failing, before I go ahead and replace the inverter I would like to hear if I might be missing something?? like the "does the inverter control the backlight" ??? I am more than sure that it does!! but just want to make sure that I am doing the correct repair for this issue, as I want to keep the cost down to as low as possible, pocket strings are pulled tight on this one!!!.

Thanks for any advice :major

Answer:backlight issue

Yeah it does but I'll be a pound to a pinch of poop its the backlight that's broken.

You can do a quick test of the inverter be warned though its high voltage. Solder two piece of wire to two pins and stick them in the end of the inverter connector, bare some of the copper from the end now bring the two piece of wire together and a spark should jump the gap once its close enough, try not to have too much fun though incase you pop it:-D EDIT And don't touch the bare copper wire either for obvious reasons...

You can use a multimeter to test it is you wish but most have a max safe voltage of 1000v so it can pop them,I've done it loads of times and not popped mine but I have an expensive multimeter,it too has a max safe voltage of 1000V but will read voltage up to 3000V,go figure.

The other option if to buy a cheap inverter from a computer store which usually come complete with a ccfl, they are dirt cheap like £5 and connect it to the laptop backlight,I've used this method too but its more dangerous as you run the risk of damaging a perfectly good backlight/screen with incorrect voltage.

http://www.scan.co.uk/products/shar...us-dual-inverter-plus-adhesive-velcro-strips)

If it is the backlight and you want to keep costs low you can replace the backlight too but its a PITA.

EDIT this is all assuming is a ccfl backlight and not LED you don't want to connect a CCFL baclight to an LED backlight,I just checked and it looks that way.

I first though it was a backlight issue but when I shine a bright flashlight on the screen I see nothing. I also plugged in an external monitor and had no results. The only light that lights up is the power on indicator. The LED for the HDD doesn't turn on. the caps lock key doesnt turn on when pressed but the FN indicator turns on when FN is pressed. I get no POST beeps or anything else. I tried to boot up the machine with no RAM and no HDD with the same results. I took the laptop apart and found no water damage or any damage of any kind. Any one have any ideas before I call it quits?

Thanks

Answer:Possible Backlight Issue?

I get no POST beeps or anything else. I tried to boot up the machine with no RAM and no HDD with the same results.I'd suggest downloading the instructions for your model from the mytoshiba support website, and using the specified procedure (varies between models) to clear the CMOS data in case it has become corrupted and is causing the BIOS to set an unbootable condition for the CPU. Beyond that, unless anyone else has another idea, service might be the only option.

My new X61 (tablet) computer was dropped by a friend. Once it fell I turned it on to find it so dim i can barely see the login. Can anyone help me A.S.A.P.

Answer:X61 Backlight issue

Sounds like the backlight is broke, and the screen needs replacing. Call Lenovo. They can check it out and replace it (free if you have their accidental damage coverage).

When connecting to a datacard g3 modem the backlight switches off. I read this could be a problem with the FL inverter but it only happens when this device connects to the internet. Connecting via the ethernet or wireless it works. When the laptop is rebooted the screen is fine. Any suggestions

Answer:Strange issue with backlight on Sat A60

Hi

Strange. I hear the first time about such problems.
In my opinion if the FL inverter has a malfunction the backlight should stay off everytime.

Is it possible to discern something on the screen if the backlight switches off?
Possibly only the screen brightness was changed to a lower level. In this case you should try to use the FN+F7 key combination.

But it?s very unusual that this happens during using this card.
The problem is that this card was not designed by Toshiba. Did you try to contact the card manufacture? If not so I would recommend asking the card manufacture support for any further details and help.

Answer:X1 issue - blackscreen/no LED backlight

Hi everyone! I have a ThinkPad L440. Just out of the box the lcd was very very dark (can see image with a flashlight) no backlight was on. I got a genuine replacement lcd, replaced and still same issue, no change. After that I have upgraded the BIOS to newest - didint help. This is not a driver issue as problem is presistant from start of the pc. External monitor works fine. Any ideas?

Answer:L440 LCD backlight issue

Hi Shlapenka,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!

We are sorry to hear that LCD backlight is not working in L440 laptop.

Usually, these symptoms indicate a blown fuse on the motherboard.  The issue comes up frequently when LED-backlight screens are broken.  Lenovo does not do this type of repair (other than motherboard replacement). It can be done, but most places do not have the specialized equipment to diagnose and repair.

I would like to suggest you to visit the authorised Lenovo service centre for the hardware assistance.

https://support.lenovo.com/in/en/contactus/findaprovider

Hope this helps. Do post back if issue persists!

Best Regards,

Poojitha.

I have big pain in my eyes after day of work with Tecra A11 BIOS V1.7 = newest BIOS update. Wenn I bought it there was BIOS 1.4 the same problem with eyes, LED backlight killing my eyes, big pain after day of work. V1.5 and 1.6 are much better (no pain) but new BIOS 1.7 is the same eye-killer as 1.4.

Who is going to help me? Users of this forum?

I want Toshiba people to help me, they sell 1/2 ready product, absolutely bad work! No contacts to Toshiba just this user forum. Is Toshiba interested in my problem with his bad Tecra A11 notebook and stupid BIOS updates? I am really angry, never had such problems with so expensive notebook. So excuse my emoutions I start to hate Toshiba for the extremly bad experience with this Tecra A11. Why should some users of this forum help me? I paid a lot of money to Toshiba, so I want Toshiba people to tell me what they do in their BIOS updates, what stupidity kill my eyes with LCD backlight. How many BIOS updates will be needed to make Tecra A11 working properly for 800 EUR? I will never more buy something from Toshiba.

Answer:Tecra A11 - LED backlight issue

Hi dusanpov,

First of all: Cool down! Nobody is perfect and such things can happen that something works not properly.

I don?t know which problems you have with LED backlight but a more detailed description would be nice. Friend of me is also using Tecra A11 but he didn?t tell me about any issues so I think this notebook works pretty well.

And I think it?s normal that there is no contact to Toshiba and you will not get any help from Toshiba because you have to contact an *authorized service provider*. If you have a problem with your notebook, contact these guys. They can repair the notebook and this is free if your notebook is under warranty. On the Toshiba website you can find a list of them.
Check this!!!

Last but not least if you have noticed that with an older BIOS version everything works properly, you can get this older version from an authorized service provider as well. As you can see, it could be useful to contact these guys.

If you have more questions, just post again! :)

Hello. I ordered a W701 laptop a few months ago and everything works fine. The one thing bothering me is a bit of backlight bleeding on each side of the laptop. I do a lot of 4:3 video editing and for the majority of time the sides of my laptop are black and the bleeding, although not excessive is noticeable. I do not want an exchange, this unit is just fine, ideally I would simply want the screen fixed. I really don?t believe the ?all screens have some backlight bleeding? argument, for the simple reason that all my previous laptops, including my current, rather weak, Toshiba Satellite have none. In fact, I didn't even know of the backlight bleeding phenomenon until I got this laptop. I also think that this issue should not be present in a $2500+ machine. Would it be possible for me to sent in the laptop for repair? I am still within my one-year warranty. Thank you very much.

Answer:Backlight Bleeding Issue

you could try to call Lenovo and see what their opinions on it. They may agree to a replacement and they may not. Also can you post a picture of the bleeding problem?

Hi guys,  Looking for some help on this one. Essentially the image on my screen is very, very dim. At first I thought there was no image at all, it's only when I shine a flashlight on it I can see the background welcome screen. After doing some research it seems like it could be an inverter/backlight issue. Anyone know what the next steps could be? I could do a screen replacement quite easily I guess but would that help? Thanks

A little over a month ago the back light on my laptop stopped working so I decided to take it into a shop to get looked at. The people at the shop told me that the problem was with what I think was called an LED inverter and that to get it fixed it'd cost $600. Now I didn't want to pay that so I decided I'd just get it sent to Lenovo as it was under warranty and get it fixed. The only problem is though is that once I got the laptop back from the shop that I first took it to the screen was working again, even though when they looked at it they said it wasn't. So I took it back to the shop then and they suggested maybe it was some kind of connection problem and a wire or something moved to fix itself. They also suggested I still send it to lenovo to get them to look at it. So after all of that I did get it sent to them only to get it returned with a piece of paper saying it had full diagnostics done and no problems were found. That I was happy enough with so I believe there to be no problem anymore.... Until today. Today I turned my laptop on only to find the screen flash then go black again, just like it was before all of my previous hassle. I tried turning the computer on and off a few times but still all I could get was the dim images on the screen that can be seen without the backlight. What my biggest problem out of all of this though is that my warranty ran out just 10 days ago!!! ='[ Now I don't know what I can do, should lenovo still be responsible for th... Hi!
I am experiencing issues with keyboard backlight on my laptop Vostro 5468 running Ubuntu 17.04. On battery it works normally (waits 1 minute to turn it off). On AC keyboard backlight turns off automatically after 1 second or less if I didn't touch the touchpad or keyboard. The same issue was on Ubuntu 16.04 and 16.10.

Hi all, I really appreciate any help or suggestions.  I have very little knowledge of the workings of computers, except what I have been learning while trying to fix this problem. I am in the middle of bar prep and need to have my computer as I am doing the bar prep online.  System (I can provide any other information needed, if that would help)I have a T61 (7658-CTO). Accelerator in Use is Mobile Intel(R) 965 Express Chipset Family. Video BIOS: 1436Driver Version is 8.15.10.1867OS: Windows 7 Ultimate, Service Pack 1 (6.1.7601) What happened.  My computer was running Windows Vista and working fine.  I was enrolled at the Univ of Washington and part of the tuition covered Windows 7 and Microsoft Office with everything.  So, I went and had both installed on my computer.  Afterwards, my computer began crashing and often I would get BSOD with code 116.  I looked this up and it was the display driver.  I downloaded the newest driver 8.15.10.1867 and that problem seems to have gone away.  My new problem has only been occurring for the past 2 days.  When I first start up my computer in morning, the backlight goes after a few seconds. (I am currently living in a cold basement, so last night I made sure that the computer was kept in a warmer part of the home, but the problem still occurred this morning.) I am able to get the blacklight to work again if... Answer:T61 backlight issue at start up.

This could definitely be a failing screen, but it could also be a software problem, as the backlight can be controlled by software, both bightness or shut off completely. One simple way to tell would be to start it from a different operating system. If you have another T61, you can install the drive and see if it behaves the same, or you could start the computer from a Linux live CD. If you have the same problem running under linux (or a different windows OS), then you can safely assume it's hardware and should consider replacing the bad part...  most likely the screen.  A good source for a linux liveCD would be ubuntu.com ps. another thought...  if my future depended on me having a working computer every day...  then I'd surely have a spare handy.

I've read on other forums that the DreamColor z24X monitor had a backlight issue that resulted in poor screen unifority. Some say that this problem was exclusive to earlier versions of the monitor, and it has since been fixed. Others disagree I'm considering purchasing a z24x, but I would like to hear about the backlight issue first. Can anyone comment? Has this problem been addressed?

Greetings everyone! I have recently upgraded my Windows 10 OS to the anniversary update recently and shortly after the update, my laptop's LCD backlight randomly went off and wouldn't go on. At first I thought it could be the drivers update that messed up the backlight but I knew it doesn't work that way. Here are the list of things I've tried: - Rebooting (obviously)- Reinstalled the Intel HD graphics card with the latest version from Lenovo's support- Reinstalled the Nvidia graphics card with the latest version from Lenovo's support- Also tried previous Intel & Nvidia graphics card driver versions- Keyboard's built-in backlight controller doesn't do anything I'm starting to think it's hardware related issue and if that's the case, where's the trusted website to obtain a LCD screen replacement to fix it myself (I've already found tutorials on how to replace it, because warranty expired literally last week...) Thanks!!!

I have a T440p which came with a non backlit keyboard, which I wanted to replace it with a backlit one. After installing the new keyboard the backlight wouldn't come on (i'm using Fn + spacebar, the keyboard has the light icon on the spacebar and the OS shows an icon for the backlight).I tried swapping it out with a friend's keyboard (from a t450s which was replaced due to a damaged key) but without any luck. Could this be an issue with the motherboard or controller? What are my options? Thanks! I appologise if I have overlooked a topic describing this issue, but all of the topics related to the keyboard backlight were related to the fact that the keyboard wasn't backlit while the user was expecting it to be.

So I recently upgraded my late 2015 imac's processor from an i5 to an i7, and when i put it all back together, the screen would not turn on. Well technically it turns on but the backlight does not work. (I can see everything if i shine a strong light on the screen) I've reopened it a few times to try and see what the problem is, but I cannot find anything. The connections are good, the cables are good, nothing appears to be broken or out of the ordinary. Does anyone have a clue on what is messed up and what I would need to fix/replace? I don't want to go to the apple guys....

I believe there are 4 possibilities for the issue:
The power supply, the 2 display connections on the logic board, a fuse somewhere, or the GPU.

specs:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
4 GHz Intel Core i7 6700k
16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB
Crucial mx300 750gb 2.5'' SSD

Hi,
I have had a Toshiba Satellite 1110 for about 1 1/2 years and just recently the screen has gone dark, it appears the backlight has broken or come loose. It seems this might be a problem with the LCD inverter (as a google search shows) and I was curious if my model would be accepted despite not being on this: http://uk.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=UK&ID=FL_INVERTER_UK list?

If not would this problem be considered under the Component exchange programme? The model is listed but the symptoms are not the same as mine link: http://www.toshibadirect.com/content/pc/b2c/CEP.html

Edit: I live in the UK if that makes any difference

Any help would be great, thanks
Claire Harris

Answer:Satellite 1110 Backlight issue?

Dear Claire,

The best way to solve your problem is make contact with Toshiba Service Partner. As far as I know all Toshiba notebooks are covered by a two-year European warranty. They can check your machine and exchange defect hardware parts.

Here you have link to Toshiba Service Partner database
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=ASP_SUPPORT

Good luck!

Hi!
I have a 7450 which suffered some liquid damage. The good thing is it still works and when plugged into an external monitor everything is hunky dory.
However, without an external screen the picture is barely visible. I thought the backlight had blown so I changed the screen however the replacement screen had the same issue?
I've read it is something to do with a fuse on the motherboard, is this correct? The replacement screen had the electronics bar (invertor?) as part of the screen but I did not change anything else.
Any help/advise would be much appreciated!
Thanks

Answer:Dell 7450 Backlight Issue

Hi Windowscrashedagain
Thanks for writing to us.
Do provide us your system tag#, email address and name via private message,by clicking on my name in blue and then select send a private message

Please provide us the LCD part# you replaced?
If the issue is still the same with new LCD, probably the LCD connector on the motherboard is gone. In which case we have to replace the motherboard.

Now, I suspect that the inverters are fine and I'm wondering about the LCD switch or LCD cable. I suppose I could just buy a cable, but before that, I wanted to take a step back and try to figure out if I'm overlooking anything. I've not been able to find a picture or location of the t400 lcd switch in either the lenovo hardware manual for the t400 or elsewhere online.Hi,I've got a thinkpad t400 with CCFL backlight. I recently replaced a bad LCD (the backlight was working at the time) with a new one. However, while the new screen works, it's backlight did not. I ordered a new inverter and plugged that in - still didn't work. I grabbed the old screen's backlight and tried it with both inverters - did not come on. I then grabbed another laptop I have and plugged in the old screen's backlight - it came on. Plugged in the new screen's backlight (while lcd was still plugged into the thinkpad), it's backlight came on.So, I know both backlights are fine, and suspected I just had a crappy inverter. I got a replacement new inverter and it still doesn't work. Tried new lcd and old backlight with all three again, no dice. Backlights still turn on when connected to spare laptop. So I now suspect the inverters are fine. I noticed that the laptop no longer goes to sleep or hibernation when the lid is closed. I changed the power settings so that it should sleep or hibernate, tried each power mode and it still refuses to do so. So I think the issue is with the switch that detects when t... Read more

Have Dell Latitude D400 Laptop which is several years old. For many months, had minor problem where LCD screen would have partial garbled horizontal lines, but when I shifted the screen angle -- moved screen on hinges -- back and forth slightly, then screen would be fine. But recently, the bottom 70% of the screen has turned to olive green mush with a few other vertical lines, where as the top 30% of the screen is fine. When I connect external monitor to rear jack, I am able to see all the graphics there and the hardware and software otherwise performing. When run built-in diagnostics, get graphics error with no external monitor, but all tests just fine when ext monitor connected. Conclusion from on line chat with Dell Tech was LCD Screen problem and referred me to the toll free SALES phone number -- meaning just purchase another one.

How do I know if the problem is the LCD screen being shot, or possibly just needing to clean or repair the connection through the hinges from the CPU/graphics card to the screen itself? If the latter, who should I seek to do such a repair or can I get guidance to open the unit and try myself as I am technically comfortable doing so with instruction? And given the cost of new laptops today, if I need to go outside for repairs, where should I look and up to what cost do you think is worth it, vs just abandon and purchase a new one.

Answer:Laptop LCD screen or screen connection issue

Could be a bad connection or the LCD might be shot. I would take it apart and at least poke around if it is no longer under warranty. Dell has some pretty good service manuals on their site. I think yours is here: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/latd400/en/index.htm#online_documentation

If you don't find anything obvious wrong with it, you can most likely get a screen off FleaBay for a few bucks and try it out.

Or just get some huge hinges and mod a 50" plasma screen on it...

Good luck!

I had this same problem going from Win7 to Win8 and now again to Win10 Pro. It did not occur when I upgraded from 8.1 to 10 InsiderPreview. No matter, just go to the Samsung support site and reinstall the Windows 7/8 drivers and Easy Settings Setup (Samsung proprietary software) http://www.samsung.com/us/support/ow...NP900X4C-A01US.

Even after the updates and software installs it will crap out at random. Run the Settings program and the keyboard backlight magically comes back to life.

I recently got this amazing 1080p monitor for my custom rig and I love it! Well... most of it.
There is this problem with the backlight, where when the monitor turns on after a while of inactivity, the backlight turns on for a split second, then suddenly goes very dim. The brightness setting is unchanged; kept at a solid 70, yet it's a quarter as bright as it should be. I can go into the menu and change the brightness, and I can tell, faintly, that it does adjust, but never up to the proper level.

To remedy the issue, I repeatedly turn the monitor off and on until the display finally lights up properly, and it stays that way for the entire time I am using it. At the start of the session in which I write this post, I had to do this at least 20 times before it worked, so I finally decided to really look into this problem.

It seems this is a unique issue, as I found absolutely no matching posts on the interwebs by searching with the all-mighty Google Search. Is there anyone that can provide some insight as to why this occurs, and/or how to fix it?

Thanks for your time.

Answer:Issue with an ASUS VK-248h Monitor Backlight

New theory: Bad capacitors... somewhere. Possibly power supply

After a day at work, observing some coworkers working on used LCD TVs (and working on one myself), I now understand quite a bit more about such things.

I had removed the display from my setup and left it on the floor for a few days. Today, I decided to try it again. The backlight started up perfectly fine, surprisingly. The ASUS screen showed for a couple seconds, then went off, as normal. Then, when it's supposed to activate the selected display input, it shows the screen for just long enough to get half a frame drawn, then goes completely black. Turning monitor off and on repeatedly, and trying different input methods, gave same result. I got it to work once, but at that time the backlight had gone too dim again.

I think now I might know how to fix it, but I can't for the life of me figure out how to take the dang thing apart! Lol.

Opened with power on so that I could see if I fixed it. One corner of the LCD cable did look like it was not seated on the panel connector by a hair's width. Made sure it was definitely seated properly. I lose display.Panic, check it out with a torch. Display still works but no backlight. And the left side still has issues. What works:External video output. Answer:X230t LCD Panel issue, backlight and maybe fuses too

That looks like a bad panel.  It cannot be the cable.  If backlight doesn't come on now, you may also have blown a fuse when taking it apart.  They are easy to blow.  If both the panel and one or 2 fuses are bad, repair might not be the best option.  You can often find a used one with no memory, battery and HDD and do a transplant.

Hi
I have a Tecra A2 with a backlight problem.
The LCD is displaying correctly, but without any backlight the image is very faint.

When the laptop is booted the display lights up perfectly for about 3 seconds before turning off. The laptop successsfully boots and can be used with an external monitor. If I now close the lid the laptop backlight lights up again for a few seconds before going off again. I have tried a new backlight inverter which had no effect. The lid closed sensor is the magnetic type (presumably a reed relay) and measures 100Kohms when open? and 0 ohms when closed.
Could this 100K be the problem?

Has anyone experienced any of these symptons or does anyone have any backlight inverter data, i'm wondering if I have a second faulty inverter.

Could this be a faulty FL backlight issue?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Answer:Tecra A2 backlight issue - image is very faint

You are right Philip.

For me it looks like the faulty FL-inverter too?
You said that the display on the external monitor looks fine. So we can eliminate a GPU fault.

I think your should contact the ASP in your country. The technician should check the faulty part (probably FL inverter) and should replace it with a new, compatible one.

>i'm wondering if I have a second faulty inverter
I see you have already replaced the one FL inverter and the issue still appears? hmm to be honest I believe you have used a wrong one? but who knows? nothing is impossible.

So ask the ASP technician for the further handling?

Best regards and good luck

hey fellow thinkpad fans!using a thinkpad t510i (4314-7VG). since updating the gfx driver to 257.38 via the driver download page, my backlight hotkey behaviour is facked up. the steps between 15 and 9, whether increment or decrement, behave normally. but below the 9, it once more decrements to 8 and then jumps to 6, 4 and 0. when incrementing again it jumps to 5, 7 and 9 and behaves normally again.tried reinstalling gfx drivers several times, also power mgmt driver, hotkey feature etc. i just found out, the backlight hotkey behaves normally until i install the 257.38 gfx driver!somebody else arguing with that issue? any solutions?

Answer:[T510i] backlight hotkey behaviour issue

Are the 257.38 drivers from Lenovo or from NVidia?

Hi,

Running latest build of Windows 10 on a Samsung NP900X3A-B03UK. The Keyboard Backlight does not work and I don't know how or even if any of the Samsung Windows 8 apps/drivers will fix this.

Does anyone know if there is a way I can get this working. Everything else works fine.

Thanks in advance!

Hey Guys,
Had a broken screen on my 15 7548.  Worked ok, just cracked.  Replaced the screen, new screen didnt work.  Put the old screen in, now it doesnt work. :(
Look closer and the screens (both) are working but no backlight.  Replaced LCD cable, still no backlight.
Reading up on other folks having backlight issues and i guess there is a fuse that can be blown?  I looked around on my board for a fuse, cant find it.  Any help locating this tiny thing?

Hello all, After last touchpad updates (Synaptics UltraNav Driver 7/8/8.1 ver. 18.0.7.57) my track point died (red dot middle of letters GBH) and I could select which parts of my touchpad/trackpoint I want to use. Because I have a mouse I usually dont use touchpad and if I'm on the road and I dont have mouse with me I use track point. I want to turn of touchpad because its really annoying to type anything cos my hand touched the pad and mouse makes mistake clicks. Now, If I want to disable my touch pad I need to make it from BIOS and still.. I cannot activate my trackpoint. Another think that I also realize that my keyboard backlight is also dead no matter how much i tried to press fn+space nothing happened. Did anyone else noticed this type of problems?

Hello,

I've purchased the Lenovo X220 laptop with the Premium HD IPS display and I do have a problem with it (see below).
Laptop was purchased something like month ago and I've spotted this after I've started to work with it more heavily but after 14 days, so I was not able to return it to the seller (http://www.lenovoonline.cz).

When you put backlight to maximum you see that the display is not evenly lighted and forming bright spots on the bottom of it. It's most noticable on the black background.

I've sent notebook for repair (http://www.pcnet.cz) with this description (translated to english):"With maximum brightness set and the black display/background (eg. BOOT screen) on the bottom edge of the display there are visible white spots/maps. Small but visible and not even with different sizes. It's most visible on black background and while limiting external light (darker room, working in the night). Spots highlights even more when you try to pull the display towards you into steeper angle."

The laptop has been in the repair for 2 weeks and the result was this description:
"This kind of display is very sensitive to any pressure, and it will result in the brightening the place. It is specific for this model line and it's not the reason to warranty repair. We recommend to lower the brightness level in the darker room. Check of the display frame has been done and no problem has been found."
Later they said they've re... Read more

Answer:X220 IPS display backlight issue (with photos)

Yes, at maximum brightness level the backlight bleeding is very visible but I use it at 5 or 6 level where it has excellent contrast ratio considering how crappy current notebook displays are in general. The uneven backlight is caused by fancy LED backlight which is still not able to deliver similar quality regarding uniformity as good old CCFL backlight (that's why professional LCD monitors still rely on W-CCFL backlight). But I agree that the top-left corner is way too much bad and might indicate that the panel is seated badly in the frame. On the other hand my old IPS panel in R51 also have backlight bleed at maximum brightness level. Major problem is that Lenovo is still not able to fix the stupid bug with brightness level always set to max in BIOS screen that the backlight bleeding is very visible and irritating everytime you boot your machine. IMHO, the X220 IPS panel is still much better than any ugly contrastless TN panel Lenovo puts into ThinkPads (except 15" FHD). I bet that you would hate the X220i TN panel more than this one  There are also two different revisions of the IPS panel, the second one fixes problems with image retention. As for comparison with Z60m, X220 display lid is much more fragile so the panel is not protected well against pressures and flexes. In any case panel flex should affect the backlight bleeding temporarily only. If it persists it is subject to repair (replace, reseat etc.). Unfortunately I don't have any good low-ligh... Read more

Keyboard backlight works fine on all three settings, however if I close the computer screen and open it back up the backlight/thinklight remains off. As in, the keyboard backlight/thinklight mode isn't saved and restored when closing and opening the computer lid

Answer:Minor issue with keyboard Backlight T530

Hi there ocm,

This is normal behavior for the keyboard backlight/thinklight. I do not believe there is a way to change it from happening, it behaves this way on a few Thinkpads that I tried this morning.

Hi everyone,
I have an Inspiron 15-5559 laptop and I've been trying to turn OFF the backlight on the keyboard but none of the methods were successful.
Here are all the things that I tried:
1. Pressing Fn+10, as well as just F10 while the Fn key is locked. Keyboard backlight stays on.
2. Installed Quickset, same as above.
3. Installed DFEP 2.2 Utility (after uninstalling Quickset), same as above again.
4. Changing the settings in BIOS in the Keyboard Illumination section.
All of the above will allow me to change the settings on the software side, whether it's selecting OFF/50%/100% brightness, or ON/OFF, or on-screen slider. None of them actually changes the keyboard backlight brightness.
Please give me a hand on how to turn off the keyboard backlight. Thanks.

I have a Lenovo Ideacentre B520 All in one. It powers on alright. But the LCD backlight does not come on. I can see a faint picture on the screen if i use a flashlight. The unit's Backlight converter board i noticed the capacitor on it is damaged. I can order a new board and replace it (easy enough). I was wondering if this is a common thing on these all in one units? Another person told me it could be the mainboard of the unit.  I'd rather spend about$50.00 than 189.00. Also when i hook the unit to HDMI out and use a external monitor i see the lenovo splash screen, but when i install a hard drive after the BIOS screen it locks up and i have to restart, but if i do not install a hard drive, then i can boot ubuntu or memetst (just for testing purposes). Any ideas?

There's a 48-page discussion on the backlight bleeding of the x220 on the Lenovo forums (http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/X-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Faint-Ghosting-on-X220-IPS-screen/td-p/435201). There are also many smaller threads regarding problems with the x220 IPS screen and to a lesser extent the x230 screen. I recently purchased an x230 and experienced bleeding. Due to my onsite warranty IBM support came and replaced the screen- but the new one still had bleeding. Another engineer came out, brought a new back-panel (because the flex of the panel seemed to be causing it) and said "this isn't broken- I have seen lots of x220s and x230s with this problem- its a design default". Could I challenge Lenovo to provide me with an x230 IPS screen which does not bleed? I cannot believe Lenovo released/designed a laptop with such a glaring (no pun intended) fault. Has anyone here got an x230 (or x220) IPS screen where there is absolutely no backlight bleeding on a dark background?

Answer:All x220 and x230 IPS screens have backlight bleeding issue?

All X230 and X220 LG IPS will have some degree of bios bleed, it is just matter of severity.

Answer:Dell Inspiron 5558 - Keyboard Backlight Issue

Dell 5558 comes with an optional keyboard. Apparently, the bios is tweaked for machines that come with a backlit keyboard while your machine doesn't. The only option is to purchase and replace a new backlit keyboard from EBAY or AmaZon and install it. That will work, do check out instructions before replacing keyboards.

There is not much you can do except send the laptop to an ASP for a quote. The Inverter or screen may have a problem.

Hey, So I just today reinstalled Windows 7 (for the second time) downloaded all of the drivers from the lenovo support area, and everything BUT the backlight controls seem to be working...now heres the interesting/weird thing: Backlight defaults to 15 right now (I haven't touched it), but I can increment down by 1 level up until level 8. Then, the next increment goes from 8 to 6, then the next is 6 to 1...nothing inbetween. Has anyone encountered this? Is this a driver problem? What should I do? Thanks in advance,Xb0x3r

Answer:T510 - Fresh Windows 7 Install, Backlight issue

@Xbox3r,That is really weird ... Hmmmm Did you use ThinkVantage System Update to download the Lenovo drivers? If not maybe you could try that and see if you have covered all drivers. If you did use TVSU, try uninstalling the hotkeys and Lenovo Power Manager, do a reboot then reinstall them again and see if it helps.//JameZ

I tried contacting hp support on the computer but they were no help and when they called me I couldn't understand a word of what he was saying. Great laptop, horrible screen.  Has anyone found a fix for this or has hp recalled these laptops? Hi there,

I have an HP Elitepad 900.
The problem I seem to have is when I press the power button to turn off the screen, the screen turns off but the backlight stays on.

Any help would be appreciated :-)

There is an image attached.

Answer:Screen backlight still on when screen turned off HP Elitepad

I had the same issue, here is what you need to do to fix it. Go to the HP support site and access the Elitepad 900 downloads for Windows 8.1. Download the ElitePad 900 BIOS/Firmware/Driver Update (SP71504). Run this update - the item that will fix your issue is the Intel GMA driver included in this update.

The issue is the "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" that gets installed by default. This display adapter also appears to have caused issues in other devices as well - so it isn't necessarily an HP issue. I assume there will be a standalone Windows 10 Intel GMA installer - but I wasn't able to find one to install - of course that doesn't mean it isn't out there. The 8.1 installer package above ran without issue on my device and the display issue was no longer present.

Just a note, Microsoft is having similar issues with the Surface devices. They are having users update the display driver in order to resolve the problem.

I hope you have the same results and you can finally get your screen to turn off without having to shut it down.

I have a lenovo T540 laptop. The problem is that my laptop screen will not completely work. What happens, beginning from startup, is that the laptop screen works completely normal, shows the usual lenovo loading screen, then once it reaches the point where is is supposed to show the desktop background(where you sign in.) It changes to a dim black. My external screen is black as well as though it was extending the screen. I can click, then sign in, and access all of my files after I change the setting to second screen only, but I would like to be able to use the laptop screen as well. If anybody could help that would be great.

Hello,

For the past few days sometimes when I open my laptop I get a grey screen with horizontal streaks (sometimes black with horizontal streaks) running across the screen. If I close the screen and re-open it eventually it will go back to normal. I've also had the screen freeze a few times for a few seconds while I'm using it.

I've hooked it up to my TV when it had the grey screen and it was working fine so I'm pretty sure it's the laptop screen. This doesn't happen all the time so if the solution is get a new screen I'll just live with it, but perhaps something simpler?

Answer:Laptop screen issue

My first guess would be the video card or driver but if you hook it to an external monitor and it is OK then it does point to the Laptop screen. Sometimes the ribbon cable from the Motherboard to the monitor can get loose or damaged. Not saying that is what it is tho.

About 2 weeks ago, a pink line appeared on my laptop screen. It is a straight line running down the length of the screen on the left side. A couple of days ago another line appeared, this time yellow. I am fairly certain that this is a hardware issue (driver re-install and system rebuild have not helped). I contacted HP who told me my 15month old laptop is out of warranty and will cost £250 to repair.Do I have any other options?ThanksTony Webber

Answer:HP Laptop screen issue

Not really it is a hardware issue rather than software I suspect. You could try ebay to get yourself a new screen cheaper and install it yourself. Usually screens are about £50 - 150 depending on the one you need. However some home insurance may cover you for the costs but remember the rise in the premium before you do claim.

Hi. I've had this laptop, a Dell Inspirion 1200, for a few weeks now. I usually either close the cover or put it into Hibernation when I'm done using it. I haven't jarred it, shocked it, or stepped on it.

Basically, I opened up the cover and hit power. While it was booting up, I looked away to do something, and when I looked back, the screen was covered in white vertical lines. I shut down the computer by holding down the power button, then rebooted. When it came up again, it was perfectly fine (no lines at all.)

Is this a fluke or something I should worry about in the future?

when i unplug my ac adapter from the wall before i unplug it from my lappy the screen stays bright, which isnt bad. but when i plug it in(wall first then lappy) it goes dim, like its in power saving mode. now how i usually fix this is i recreate the problem by unplugging it from the wall then turning the comp off, then unplug it from the comp while plugging it back into the wall, turn the comp on then plugging it back in. but it usually takes me a couple tries to get it back to normal again. ive turned off my power saving features and ive just had the computer screen replaced about 2 weeks ago. its always done this and i know it happens when i unplug it from the wall first; which if im in a hurry i dont think about it untill its to late.

its not that big of a problem but i would love to know how to fix it faster or maybe disable any features that could cause this.

There is no way to fix it the issue is whether it is serious enough to require that HP replace the screen. There is a "pixel policy" that governs the terms of the warranty. You need to contact HP Warranty Support to see if you can get a new screen.

I've had a HP dv6 laptop for close to a year now and have had zero issues up until the last week. I've noticed when watching videos in fullscreen for even a short period of time the contrast for the screen goes right up up when the video is exited, basically if I watch something and then minimise it whatever is behind it is almost unreadable, such as the standard chrome bar up top looks almost one solid, bright colour, after 5 to 10 seconds its back to how it should look.
It's also a LED display
Anybody have a similar situation or know what the problem could be?

Question: Laptop backlight

Hi there,

currently having propblems with my laptop screen as the backlight seems to randomly cut out. It's an acer aspire 5535 and under 2 years old. After having a look at the connections there doesn't seem to be any loose or broken connections and can't find any reason as to why it does turn off. If I leave it alone it does come on but after starting any tasks or watching a video it will turn off, sometimes for minutes and sometimes for longer. A movement of the screen did used to get it back on but has stopped having the desired effect for a while now. Are there any obvious causes for something like this or will it be something more difficult?

Thanks

Answer:Laptop backlight

Its possible you have a bad cable that connects mother board to the screen but take a good look at the
solder joints around the sockets at motherboard end and inverter end. Also inspect the solder joints
on the inverter.

Hello, recently(a week or two ago) a friend of mines laptop, a Gateway MT6728, had juice spilled on it. While there wasn't a problem immediately a week later the backlight didn't come on, but you can still see the image if you hold a flashlight up to it. I took it apart to clean it and see if the video cable had become loose or something, and at first it looked like two of the video pins were missing. But then I accidentally had a magnet too close to the laptop and the screen flickered on for a second since it has a magnetic lid switch, or at least that's the only conclusion I can come to. Is there any way I can test the video cable to see if it's bad or not? Or any other way to test why the backlight isn't turning on?

Question: Laptop backlight?

A friend brought me there Toshiba satellite a15-S127. She said the monitor started flickering and the next time she started the system the monitor was blank. I started it up and it does boot into Windows. The screen is essentially black, but I can see the desktop faintly. When I pushed the ctrl-esc keys I could see the shutdown dialog pop up.

So I used the function F7 key to see if maybe that got messed with and the brightness had been turned all the way down. That didn't work.

I'm wondering if it is a backlight gone bad or if there is another software setting that can be adjusted?

Hello! I manage several hundred chromebooks and repair them as needed, and I've got one that I've seen twice now and not found a good solution for.  My issue is that we have a Chromebook 11 G3 that has a dark screen, very faintly you can see what should be displayed. Not a case of the brightness being turned down, but rather the LED backlighting on the screen appears not to be working. I've now tried replacing, screen, motherboard and display cable in an attempt to fix this issue. The screens were brand new, as were the replacement screen cables, though the mother boards were second hand. HDMI is still functional in all cases.  I have called HP support and not gotten any information other than "replace the motherboard".  As I have now seen this twice in the past month and all of those devices were purchased at the same time I have concerns that this may be more frequent.  I guess my question would be if there is a schematic for testing the boards or information on fuses that might have blown and could be jumpered or replaced. I would also love to know if anyone else is running into this issue. I would also be thankful for any resources on testing procedures for components like the screen and output on the eDP connector. I have a little background in electronics and don't mind testing and/or soldering. Also, I have already tried powerwashing/resetting the device to no avail, stating that as I know almost all of the support... I was using my laptop yesterday afternoon, when the screen began to fail. I turned the laptop off because it had froze, and when I tried to turn it back on, it just continuously reboots and shuts off, and the screen will not come on.

I have tried plugging in an external screen, but it does not receive a signal from the laptop, nor will the external keyboard I have to use (laptop keyboard is broken, not important).

Is there any way I can get the laptop to work again without taking it to a repair shop, or does a certain part need to be replaced?

Answer:Laptop won't start after screen issue

It could be one of several issues and from the sounds of it, would require a part replacement. Possibly the video card, but my best guess would be motherboard failure. I really wouldn't be able to tell for sure without further testing.
