Preferred Solution: WD External HDD 2TB not initialized I/O ERROR is it dead???

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: WD External HDD 2TB not initialized I/O ERROR is it dead???

Hi, papaikolaou1980. Welcome to Major Geeks!

Unfortunately, none of the screenshots are showing here. But, if you've done everything listed in your post and the drive isn't showing properly, I'd say it "died" and if still under warranty, you should get a replacement. If it's a "green" series rather than "blue" or "black", I'd avoid getting another one as there have been many dependability issues with WD's "green" series.

I have this WD 1TB external drive that stopped working a while ago. I am trying to initialize it in order to perhaps try to recover data from it using a Data Recovery Wizard.

When connecting the drive via USB, it only sometimes shows up in 'Devices and Printers' as connected through USB (ie, it allows me to click 'Eject My Book' in the task bar). When it shows up there, I can also see it in Disk Management as 'Disk 2, Unknown, 931.51 GB, Not Initialized' with a little red downward facing arrow icon.

When I right click the icon (with the red arrow) and choose Initialize, it hangs a bit and then shows an error saying "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

When I run 'USB device viewer' (UVCView) this is what shows up next to that device :

This quick new hard disk. So sad I cant access it anymore? why this happen?

You can see from the photo MY computer cant even see this driver anymore, so I check on the
- Disk management it said unknown no driver letter too ,Not initialized.
-Click Initialized it said i/o device error

I have try uninstall the device and restart let it install again still the same.
Checking many thread have the same problem, I wonder anyone solve this kind of problem before?
--------------
Update the possible cause of it, I believe my external hard disk spoil because my laptop was low battery and suddenly off either it goes Hibernate or off there is no time to read or write in the hard disk.
Then I just unplug the external hard disk.

If you face this situation don't unplug it, turn on the computer back and do a proper remove or shut down everything.

I have an Asus Vivotab Smart running full Win8.1 and a Western Digital My Passport 2TB external HDD. The hard drive works fine on other computers running 7, 8 and 8.1. The tablet can read other hard drives fine as well. But this one hard drive will not function on just the tablet. I've tried deleting the drivers and letting Windows reinstall them as well as installing the latest drivers from the WD site. I've tried using a different cord, a different adapter and other USB devices on the tablet. The HDD shows up in Devices and Printers when plugged in but not Explorer and NOT Disk Management at all. Now if I delete the drivers it appears in Disk Management as an offline and not initialized drive, no drive letter. I can't initialize it and trying to set it to Online results in an an I/O error. When i unplug it and plug it back in Windows appears to be reinstalling it, but then it's back to not appearing in Disk Management at all.

This occurred when it was just Win 8. I upgraded to 8.1 and it worked for about 8 hours. The drive installed and functioned 100% after upgrading to 8.1.....and then just stopped working again. Same issue. Again, the drive works fine in every other computer I connect it to. Every other drive and USB device works fine when connected to this tablet. Just this one drive on this one tablet refuses to initialize.

Any ideas?

Answer:Wd External HDD Not initialized

Tablet might not have enough power thru USB, smaller devices could work and this one is probably pulling too much. If that's the case you can connect it thru an USB splitter with it's own 5V power supply but that won't make it as portable.

Hello there. This is my first post at this forum.

I have a probably 6-7 years old WD Elements 1TB external HDD. When I connect it to PC via USB I can hear ordinary HDD detected sound and after that it sounds some short beeps at 7-3-3 order. Here are some screenshots of my situation. Is there any way to recover my data stored in this HDD? My priority is saving my data but saving HDD would also be cool

I have an external hard drive from home (160 GB iOmega) formatted in I believe FAT32 with all my data on it from my iMac. I'm trying to connect it to my new ThinkPad to get my data. It doesn't show up in My Computer, but in Disk Management there is a Disk 1 that has a black bar at top instead of blue, says not initialized on the side, and says unallocated under the bar. Also, when I open Disk Management it offers to initialize my disk, but I fear that would erase my data.

How would I get my computer to read the disk but not erase my data?

Hi,

I'm not even sure what the topic title should be. But I can tell you about my problem.

I plugged in a new Bipra 250 GB NTFS external Hard Drive with the intention of using it to clone my C Drive.  A scan of the new drive reported no errors.  However, when I tried to run AOMEI Backupper it quit with this message:

Information Code:4120
Failed to adjust partition size.

Although I could see the drive when I clicked on Safely Remove Hardware, I could not find the drive in Explorer.

In Device Manager the disk was listed as Mass Storage Device USB Device.  I tried updating the driver, but MS says the driver is up to date.

In Disk Management, the disk showed  as Disk 1  Basic Online.   232.88 GB  - Unallocated.

Online I found information that said to right click the drive and choose New Simple Volume.  I did that. It ran. Still the drive goes unrecognized and I am unable to clone it.

I tried a reboot with the drive plugged in.  When Windows started, I could see the drive in Explorer but a message said:  Location not available.

Well, dirty word. -- And now that is gone too and the drive once more shows as unallocated in Disk Management.

More info online tells me to partition the drive after running New Simple Volume. But now I'm afraid to do that, and I don't know why that is necessary.

I have a 300GB usb external hdd, when I plug it in it beeps but does not show in "Computer". I right click on Computer/Manage/Disc Management and it shows there as 298GB Disk 2 Not initialized. A box appears, saying you must initialize before Logical Disk Manager can access it. When I click on OK I get the message Data Error (Cyclic Redundancy Check)
If I go to the box to initialize it everything is greyed out.
There is nothing of any importance on the drive so if everything is lost it doesn't matter.

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where my external hard drive (WD Passport Ultra 2TB) is not displaying in my computer and is not initialized in Disk Management. This occurred after my computer crashed while I was pulling out data from the external hard drive. Now when I plug in the external hard drive, it has a clicking sound for a few seconds then stops with a blinking light.

I have tried using the MiniTool Partition Wizard and it does not detect it. When I open up Disk Management, it says that I need to initialize the disk before I can access it. I read somewhere that I will lose my files if I initialize this, so I have not done so. The Disk Management also does not show any unallocated space in it. Please see attached image.

Currently I just want to take out all the data from this hard drive before I let this drive go if I can't save it. Is there any hope for me to save my files?

Best regards,
Jeefster

I have an WD 1TB hard disk which failed to initialize recently. It gives me an I/O error message. I found a few old threads here with similar problem and tried out the suggested steps. I ran WD diagnostic tool and passed the Quick test and Extended test(Screenshot attached). I would like to avoid the zero test and formatting of my data if possible. The hard disk is almost full and recovering them after formatting would be really painful. I would be really grateful if someone could please help me out?

Hey guys,

I have this new Western Digital My Book that I got about 6 months ago and it suddenly will not show up when I plug it in. I tried looking for solutions on what's happening but I can't get past the first few steps, until I found one where it says that the drive is probably toasted! Anyway, I'm still not giving up hope. I tried it on two computers, I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver but it's still the same. I tried initializing it and it's giving me "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error". I would like to chkdsk it but I forgot what the drive letter of the hard drive, so I can't really search it.

Hi,

I've been recovering data from three older internal hard drives for a friend, by way of an external HDD enclosure connected via USB to my laptop. It went well for the first two HDDs but the third, well ....

It's a Maxtor DiamondMax 10 HDD, 120 GB and is also marked SATA150.

(1) On most occasions, the HDD in question does not appear under My Computer. Under Devices and Printers, I see the external HDD enclosure as "USB to ATA/ATAPI bridge" (but not the HDD). In Disk Management, I see my internal drives and CD/DVD ROM but for the HDD in question, only "Disk 2, Unknown, Not Initialised" - I get the option to initialise it as MBR or GPT (I cancel at that point).

(2) On rare and seemingly random occasions, my laptop does pick up the HDD as drive F: but usually asks me if I want to format it (nope!). At this point it also appears under Devices and Printers, My Computer and in Disk Management as 'RAW' and 'healthy'.

(3) On three occasions, I have seen the drive name; on two occasions, all of the files - and on one occasion, I was able to copy four files across to my laptop (before losing visibility of it). So I know all the files are there.

However the HDD disconnects itself (or is disconnected) quite quickly, such that I am back to position (1) for the vast majority of the time.

I have tried TestDisk and EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, which do not see the HDD. I have also tried MiniTool Partition Wizard, which mostly does not see the HDD but on one occa... Read more

Answer:external drive say it was online, not initialized, and sometimes RAW

Hi andremarb,

Welcome to SevenForums.

From the description of your problem, I would think that the cable could have got damaged due the unceremonious kick that the HDD received. So as a first step use a new cable and check how your external drive behaves.

If the problem persists, please start a new thread explaining your problem in detail. Furnish full details of your external drive make/manufacturer/ Model /Capacity along with a full screenshot of how the drive appears in Windows Disk Management. Please adhere to the guidelines here Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

In the new thread, even if it is not me - so unreliable these days , some one else can address your concern. So move on with the new thread.

EDIT: Just noted that your post has been moved on to a new thread. But this post still holds - more details and screenshot after changing to a new cable.

Hi, thanks for trying to help me with this.

I recently moved and had my external hard drive disconnected and in storage for several months. It is a Western Digital model# WD500H1U-00. It has a separate power supply. There is a blue light on the front that is illuminated all the time, except when I connect the HD, then it will flash. When I got unpacked I hooked it up to my desk top and the computer would not access it. I then tried to install it on my laptop with no success. Since then I purchased a USB cord, with no luck.

This hard drive has a LOT of irreplaceable information on it. Formatting it is not an option.

Kevin at SpywareHammer.com was helping me with some other stuff and suggested I:

Regarding the ext HD, try this please:

1) Control panel===>administrative tools===>computer management===>Disk management

2) You'll Should see a list of Disks, Is Disk 1 listed with no partition letter assigned? if so continue

3) Right mouse click into the disk field, select Change drive letter and paths ===> choose a letter from the drop down, select OK. the HD should now be available.

No luck here either. When I right click on the disk field nothing happens. When I right click on the title block(?) I get: Initialize Disk (faded), Offline, Properties and, Help.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news ... but I had almost exactly the same thing happen to me on a Seagate 2TB hard drive. Working for months, even passing surface checks with no errors and then, one day -- "bad disk".

I've tried every data recovery app I could find against it (4 of them) and none of them find anything.

I've had drives fail me over the years and have never run into this situation where the drive powers up but NOTHING can be recovered from it.

So, I've resorted to sending it off to a local data recovery outfit

Hi,

My problem is as follows:
External Hard Drive (1Tb WD Elements) that I've been using for a few months now has data on that I would very much like to keep.
It was working fine until yesterday in which I tried opening a VS project which became unresponsive, tried closing everything down and turning off computer which just froze the computer leading to a hard reset (button held for 5 seconds)

Since then the External Hard Drive has not been shown in Windows Explorer and in Disk Management is shown as "Unkown" and "Not Initialized"

The Drive will still be seen correctly in Device Manager and if uninstalled it will say it has correctly installed and is ready to use.

Attempts to recover data or Initialize the drive have not worked and I have followed and looked up multiple ways to recover and other similar cases. I'm fairly certain for the data recovery the drive needs to be initialized (which just throws me an I/O error upon attempting the process) as looking at the Volume section in the properties of the device the size of the drive is listed as 0Mb.

My Last resort is taking it to a data recovery shop and hope they can grab the stuff on there.

Any help is muchly appreciated thanks.

Answer:External Hard Drive Not Initialized

I'm not up on WD Elements. Did that HD come with a form of Smartware, and in that Smartware, was there a utility that would come up and either ask you to type in the user-assigned password or it would automatically type in the saved password and pass same onto The System -- and unlock the WD Elements? I ask because I'm a little familiar with WD Passport, not WD Elements.

Hi, i'm new on this forum. I was searching for an answer to this issue in a lot of threads but i didn't find something to fix it.

I built an external hd using the hard disk of my old laptop (Fujitsu MHV2120AH PL) and a Woxter i-Case 240.

When i connected it via USB i went to the Disk Manager and saw the unit as "Disk 1 Unknown Not Initialized". But there was something else, the disk has a size of 120GB but the Disk Manager shows only 700MB.

The Disk Manager didn't allowed me to format this partition and when I press on "Initialize disk" it didn't do anything.

I used a Linux Live CD and I had the same issue, i tried to create a new partition table but it didn't create it and GParted didn't allow me to create a new partition answering that i need a partition table first.

I tried with Diskpart without any result too.

This HD had an Windows XP installed on the old laptop and before dissamble it i made a quick format with the Bootable CD of my laptop. The quick format was interrupted when the program was copying the files necesary to install Windows XP.

Do you have any idea?

Answer:Unknown - Not Initialized Disk (External HD)

Hello Matterito!

You could try a couple of things: changing the enclosure, as this one's controller may be corrupt, or hooking up the disk directly to the computer.
Also, see if your USB drivers need updating.

Following this, it may be that your disk is just damaged. It could be just that the partition table is corrupted, so may be writing full zeros to the disk and repartitioning and reformatting it would help fix the issue. That is in the case that you don't need the information on the drive.

Hi empog,

Welcome to Seven forums.

It could be an either an issue with the harddrive itself or it is formatted in a partition which is not recognized by windows.

Once the harddrive is connected open command prompt and type diskpart and hit enter. Then type list disk and hit enter.

Whatever information is displayed kindly post a screenshot for the same.

It is my brother's hard drive & it has very important data related to his working. It is a 2tb WD my passport ultra external hard disk which was used as NTFS with only one partition.
My brother told me that he deleted some data from the drive by mistake and was recovering the data from the drive but all the windows recovery programs he used just hanged after few minutes (which is also a sign of bad sectors). Then he done the blundered mistake by formatting the drive, the formatting also not completed due to hang situation.

Now the current situation is that the drive is not showing in the windows explorer and when I open the disk management ,the popup came up for initializing the disk either as MBR or GPT. When I try to initialize the disk, it gives me this error:- "The request failed due to a fatal device hardware error". I have attached a few screenshots below.

I have tried cloning the drive with clonezilla, tried booting the drive with parted magic, Hire n boot and system rescue CD but neither of them recognized the drive and some also rejected to boot with the drive attached.
Now currently i am scanning this disc for recovering the lost partition in the 'Partition Recovery Wizard' software according to the advice on some old thread here, but this software has detected my disk as 'bad Disk' in the file System column as you can see in the fifth image, so i don't have much hope with this software.

Answer:wd 2tb external drive - unknown, not initialized and unallocated

Hello nsingla and I am sorry you and your brother have this problem!

Things don't look so good now. You've done and tried a lot with aim you need, still looks like the drive's partition table and/or file system are corrupted to a stage that prevents other software to work correctly onto the drive.

I could additionally suggest trying to scan and repair the drive. Try downloading the WD ultra Drive Utilities for Windows and see if you could repair the drive:

Support Answers

If nothing works, the drive is probably too damaged and beyond repair. Hope this is not the case. But perhaps the worst part for the drive was the formatting attempt. Which, by definition, would delete everything from the HDD.

Good luck and post back with results!

Answer:my external hard drive is unknown and not initialized

I assume you have tried another usb cable; that is the very first thing to do.
If you have already done the above, then the next thing I would do would be to pull the drive out of the enclosure and connect it as an internal drive. Note you must have a working desktop to accomplish this task. If that does not work, you can send the drive to a data recovery shop. This last step is NOT cheap so get an estimate. A simple recovery using software can run $250 or so plus the cost of whatever media you want the data copied to AND it goes way up from there.
i have many thing in that drive i need them so could you please help me ?Click to expand...

Data you do not backup is data you do not care about AND you should expect to lose said data. All drives fail; it is only a question of when your drive will fail.

When I bought a case for it yesterday it was tested in a laptop computer to see if it was working before I paid for the case and it was working properly. However, the owner of the laptop removed the cable without safely ejecting the drive first. Later, I connected it to several computer and it would install and be detected in Device manager, Disk Management and even devices and printers but it does not show in My Computer nor does autoplay options pop up. In disk management it is shown as Disk 1 unknown not initialized as shown in the attached screenshot.

I notice that whenever i open disk management, it prompts me to initialize the disk but when i chose gpt and click ok, this window pops up

when I right click the Disk 1 the initialize option is gray and only offline, properties, and help are available. I used mini partition tool and this is what i get

I am at my wits end. Please assist. I do not need what is inside the hdd. I just want it to work.

Did you try initialising it as an MBR disk?

I have a external hard drive that's not initialized, but it recognizes with a messages pops up saying my drive is ready for use, but it doesn't show up under My Computer. I have a Windows 7 desktop PC that is a Home Premium 32-bit Anytime Upgrade. I'm thinking it's not fried, and I'm thinking that way because I received the message it found new hardware and ready to use? Or is it dead?

Also, I don't have a spare enclosure, and tools to open it up, so taking it out of the enclosure would be out of the question.

Thank you for any help!

I've got 600GB HD (Rock mobile disk) that goes without saying need to be recuperated. It was working fine earlier this summer when I last accessed it. A few weeks ago, I plugged it in again and it gave me an I/O Device Error, read and unspecified error.

I have been researching a solution non stop and today when i plugged it in once again something worst happened, this time I see a External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized in Disk Management.

Can someone please help?

The irony... we get an external drive to protect our data and not loose it and then this happens

Answer:External HD not Detected: Disk 1, Unknown, Not Initialized

Try this to salvage what you can from it: Download MiniTool Power Data Recovery Free Edition - MajorGeeks
Do that before any attempts to repair.
If nothing, portable drives are even less reliable than stationary ones and it's interfaces are prone to malfunction.

My external HDD has crashed after unplugging it accidentally while using it. I believe the directory structure has been corrupted. The external HDD shows Unknown, no size, and Not Initialized on the Disk Management screen:

I have tried using MiniTool Partition Wizard as described in this thread.

I'm not sure where to go now to try to recover the data on this HDD.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Answer:External HDD shows Unknown, no size, Not Initialized

Try the Data Recovery tool of Partition Wizard.

Hello,
first of all I would just like to point out that I am not a native speaker so I apologize in advance for the mistakes I might make.
I have a problem with my external hard drive. The drive is Verbatim 47512. Last year I unplugged the drive without safely removing it first. When I plugged it in again it asked me to format the drive. As I didn't wanna loose my files I tried using Recuva and it worked. However, the process took too long and I was leaving for ten months the next day so I had to stop the process. I wanted to continue when I got back but the drive wasn't working at all. I couldn't even turn it on. I kept trying and after some time it started to work again. When I plug it in, I can't find it in my computer. But I can find it in the disk management. I'm attaching a picture, it says it's uninitialized and that it needs to be initialized. I don't know what it means and I'm scared it might delete my files. It also says that it's allocated and unknown. https://postimg.org/image/zci27fe6h/
I downloaded MiniTool Partition Wizard and it says that my disk is bad. I don't know how to proceed, can you please help me? Or should I give up?

This drive was originally a Maxtor back-up drive that my brother in law could never get to accomplish a successful back-up routine when running on his XP desktop system or his new Vista laptop. He gave it to me and I installed upgraded software and tried it on my Vista x64 system and again recieved "back-up failed" error messages. I decided to delete all contents on the drive and use it as a basic external storage drive. My problem is now my system see's it as "Drive not yet initialized". How do I initialize this drive? It's a Maxtor One Touch III, 200 Gb.

Answer:Disk not initialized when trying to format external USB drive

Do it thru Disk Management...right click My Computer...select Manage...then Disk Management.

Hello
I got my 1tB WD external disk and it's not working as it used to. The problem came from nowhere, suddenly, totally unexpected. There is/was my precious data on it which I collected for 10+ years and I'd like not to lose it.

Origin:
It was working fine a day ago, no problems occured. Hasn't been unplugged since then. Has never fallen. Has never had any kind of error. But: I've seen some kind of ".COM not responding" problem on my PC (don't remember, closed it immediately). I believe my laptop is in a good and healthy condition.

So, what my WD HDD does is:
- it can be seen as a device by my computer. I can plug it out safely.
- diode shows that it's working (not showing the data transfer activity)
- nothing else

What I see in Device Management/Storage is (as in the title):
Screenshot by Lightshot

What programs I used to try to restore partition:
- Mini tool Partition Recovery Home Edition (quick and deep scan, no results. Shows disk as a Bad Disk)
http://prntscr.com/2wpy8s
- Mini tool Power Data Recovery (pro, non-free tool, however after scan there was no results)
- Find and Mount (no results)
- TestDisk (quick and deep scan, no results)

What I haven't tried doing is connecting the HDD directly to the laptop.

Any suggestions?

Answer:External HDD shows as Unknown, Not initialized, Unallocated. Restore?

You should try directly conmcting it. If that does not work, try this: Recover a flash drive turned RAW ? Partition Wizard and TestDisk. Do recovery with partition wizard. (Don't mind the name) But if that does not work, your drive is dead. Like a wise man said, backup, backup, backup!

I had a WD 2TB external drive which I transferred successfully to a USB 3.0 enclosure months ago. Then I moved and the drive has been packed away in the trunk of my car since.

I just got it out as I need some files on it, and when I hooked it up it didn't work: the computer recognized it as a CD drive or something... in Computer it would not show up or show up as just a drive letter ... in disk management it said No Media. I tried it on another PC too to no avail.

After much research, the most likely solution looked to be to get a new enclosure. So I did, but the drive still isn't working, but in a different way.

When I first hooked it up, all looked well: the system tray showed correct recognition of the drive and enclosure type/brand and installed the drivers successfully.

But the drive no longer shows up in Computer at all, and in disk management it now prompts me to initialize the disk, and has it marked as Unknown, Not Initialized.

I have spent all day trying to fix this problem, and have read a million threads on different sites and tried everything, to no consequence. I need the files on the drive, and have tried all of the following:

- booting in ubuntu and knoppix via cd - drive is not recognized

- every major app for this type of problem i saw recommended: seagate seatools, partition wizard, wd data lifeguard diagnostics, power data recovery, find and mount, a bunch of stuff on hiren's boot cd, test disk, etc.

Answer:External Hard Drive HELL (Unknown, Not Initialized)

Do NOT initialize it. With a usb stick or dvd Puppy Linux boot firmly in place ready to boot, can you reconnect the WD 2TB drive back to the computer like it was in the old days? Boot Puppy Linux, copy all the data folders and files onto another reliable external media. If that does not work, you might be heading for a local business-oriented computer fix-it place. However, let's see what others here might want to add.

Hi Jumanji,

My external HDD (WD) is not getting recognized in my laptop from last few weeks. I have followed different threads but didn't get any working solution.

I have tried below options:

1. Disk management : Initially showing MBR/GPT options but none worked. After that its showing my external HDD as 'Disk1 unknwon not initialized'.

2. MiniTools Partition Wizard : Installed MiniTools Partition Wizard v9 in my laptop however my external HDD is not showing in the tool as Disk2.

Could you please help me to get the issue resolved or recover the data at least.

I guess there is mechanical problem with the hard drive. you can try checking and repairing bad sectors (http://www.articlesbase.com/hardware...s-6907958.html), or just send it to some drive repair center.
but, if there is important files on the drive, you'll have to recover data before repairing it.

Hey,

Yesterday, I was working with my PC while my 1TB Seagate external hard (http://www.amazon.com/Seagate-FreeAgent-Ultra-Portable-External-STAA1000101/dp/B0045JLPMO) was plugged in via USB. The USB connection was a little bit loose.

Then when I was plugging a USB flash memory in, I noticed that the external hard was disconnected.
I connected it again, but it didn't appear in My Computer.
Here is the state in Disk Management and Device Manager:

After that, I plugged out the "SATA to USB converter" from the hard and connected it directly to SATA cable inside the PC case (like internal HDD), but this time nothing showed up in Disk Management, Device Manager and BIOS. However, it took a long time for the system to boot.

I searched and read lots of threads and tested some other stuff:

(It didn't appear in Minitool Partion Wizad).

I've got a lot of data on this HDD which really matters to me.
Any help is really appreciated.

Hi there Sedhadi,

If your HDD is failing the manufacturer's tests it is probably dead. IF you need to get your data back look for a reputable data recovery company in the area.
Hope that helps.

Hello. Through the power of google, I have come here to see If I can get any help recovering data. Essentially found this thread: disk 1 is unknown, not initialized, unallocated and just having really similar issues.

Issue is with my sisters External Hard drive, a WD My Passport Elite 070B.
Asked her a few questions on how she was using the drive/any issues and she explained that she had to pull the usb plug while still reading/writing because it would hang/freeze (/facepalm)

Downloaded PW Minitool Recovery and EasyRecovery Pro Trial, but haven't really run any lengthy tests yet. Just tried them out for 10 mins to see if anything would show up. Going to leave the computer on tonight and do a full scan though.

Some other things I have tried:
-Tried connecting it to other PC's/Laptops(XP/Vista/Windows 7/OSX). Same thing.
-Tried different USB cables

Any suggestions or things I should try?

It is visible in Device manager under Disk Drives but not under USB.

There are few threads in this forum which are similar to mine, except that their Drives are visible in the Disk Management as Unallocated Space, mine is not.

I've tried all tools, tried in Windows XP still no solution.

Is there any way to atleast recover the data !!!!!!!!!

Have a 1TB Iomega USB3 external hard drive that worked well on both a desktop and laptop Win7/64 system. Now it shows up as unidentified and not initialized using computer/manage/storage/disk management. Disk Management also gives the optiin to initialize it but I declined because I would like to recover the data. The power light comes on and it spins up with both a USB3 or USB2 connections and is identified as an Iomega eGo drive when I use the USB eject function.
Hard Drive Sentinel does not recognize it at all. Any suggestions appreciated.

Answer:Previously functional USB3 external hard drive shows not initialized

1. Please post a screenshot of Disk Management with your external HDD plugged in. Disk Management - Post a Screen Capture Image

2. It would indeed be prudent to recover the data before you try anything else on the HDD.

You may try to access the hard drive booting into a live Linux CD/pendrive.

Download Lucid Puppy (Ubuntu-Compatible Build) v5.2.8 ISO from http://puppylinux.org/main/Download%20Latest%20Release.htm

It is light and only 132.6 MB.

Make a Bootable pendrive with Rufus v1.3.2 (442 KB) http://rufus.akeo.ie/

It takes less than 2 minutes to create your bootable live Linux pendrive.

For more guidance on the recovery process directly get into the heading Recovering files from the non-bootable Internal Drive - applicable to recovery from any hard drive - in Lucid Puppy way to recover files from a non-bootable computer

You may also use this tutorial by Golden http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/256518-peppermint3-create-live-cd-dvd-usb-use-emergency-backup.html to create your bootable pendrive with Peppermint3 Linux.

Lucid Puppy or Peppermint3, in either case you can use Rufus to create your bootable pendrive.

Hi,

Now whenever I try to open MS Word I receive the following message:

The Visual Basic environment could not be initialized.

From searching online, it seems something's wrong with my normal file.

What do I need to to to correct the file?

Thanks,
Keisha

Answer:Error: The Visual Basic environment could not be initialized.

Hi, welcome to TSF.

From what I can tell, you are right on the money about that normal file. You will want to start by renaming it.
The file is located in different areas depending on your OS, select the correct one from below and navigate there in explorer.
Windows XP
C:\Documents and Settings\user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
Windows 7/Vista
c:\Users\user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Templates

- Right click and rename the file to Normal.dot.bak
- Relaunch Word and post results here

Yes, my uncle cannot get onto his Windows Mail that I set up for him awhile ago. He gets this message when trying to log on MSOE.DLL could not be initialized. I have searched the internet and I cannot find a quick fix for this error. Seems as though I would have to go into the registry and screw with it. He is in NC right now and I am in another state. Is there a download to fix this error causing Windows Mail to not work? Thanks.

I have a WD External SATA 1TB Hard Drive that has ~700 GB of family memories/movies/documents/etc and it is now connected to Windows 8.

The original housing it came in was unsurprisingly cheap and the connection piece broke. I re soldered it on and the connection was made but the drive threw nothing but errors. I figured I messed it up so bought an external case and assembled it. Now however, the drive does not show up under my computer but does in Disk Management.

Disk Management claims that the HD has the full TB unallocated and not initialized. I don't want to initialize it because I don't want to lose the information I have on it. Any idea on how to get this working?

I have downloaded and used the Data Lifeguard available at WD and the External has passed the Quick Test so drivers are all there and working.

Thanks

Answer:WD External Drive "not initialized" but has data on it?

Umm, I would try first connecting it back to whatever PC version you were using before (Assuming Windows 7) and seeing whats up.

If that does not work, try messing with the connection that you re-soldered and making sure its all done fully correctly, something may have gotten crossed.

ok so i got a Seagate? 500GB hard disk
model: Barracuda 7200.12 ST3500418AS

Im on a laptop and connecting the drives with a Manhattan hi-speed usb 2.0 to sata/ide adapter with power supply

I open disk management with either one of them plugged in, i can hear the disk is running and all, I see Disk1 appear on my disk manager screen... it says unknown and not initialized right on the left on the virtual disk manager
and when I open this screen, it prompts me to initialize the disk

It says:
"You must initialize a disk before Logical Disk Manager can access it."
I mark Disk1 and select Master Boot Record as partition style, and when I click OK, there's an error message saying "the device is not ready"

it worked before, it is actually brand-new.

The first time it was used I installed it and formatted on my laptop running windows 7 64bit, then I tried it on a Mac and it wasn't readable, so it was re-formatted (the guy who did it told me it should work on both mac and windows... ), still empty... now i have this problem, I don't know what I can do.

I have the exact same problem with another seagate? barracuda but this one is 500GB 7200.11 ST3500620AS, this one isn't brand-new, it was on a desktop mac.

pleasee someone help me, I hope I made myself clear, my english is not that good.

Answer:external HDD can't be initialized "the device is not ready"

Hello erickegg69 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

From the screens you have there note the screen that actually follows the first when adding a new drive. That will provide the option for selecting a drive letter.

Before the first screen however look on the square section next to the main volume seen at the left side where it says "unknown". You first have to right click on that in order to turn the drive "online". Once that is done you can proceed to use the add new drive wizard and assign a drive letter.

Upon closing the wizard up you can then open any explorer window or Computer to see a new drive icon with the assigned drive letter you selected since the external drive will then have been initialized correctly.

For use on both Mac and Windows alike you would leave that drive as Fat32 but simply see the drive made active unless you no longer plan to use the drive on the other machine and strictly for Windows use. Once you reformatted the first older drive to NTFS it was no longer cross platform between the two OSs. This is why you had to reformat a second time back to Fat 32.

All I am looking for today is to find out exactly what this firmware update fixes on the Samsung SSDs that run into the:   http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/documents/ht082504 "The ThinkPad system may experience a bluescreen that may only appear for a very short time, followed by a reboot.  During POST, the system will display a POST 2100 error code indicating the drive cannot be initialized.  The machine will not boot into the operating system.NOTE:  Powering the system off and then on again will usually clear the error, but a warm reboot will not."  Our company has now over 400 Crucial MX100 SSDs in Lenovo X220 laptops and we are starting to see more and more of our X220s having this problem.  For Samsung drives, lenovo is offering a firwmare update however when we call Lenovo they say that they will not offer any firmware updates for the Crucial drive since it is 'unsupported' which is not true. All I am looking for today is "WHAT SETTING OR FEATURE IS FIXED ON THE SAMSUNG SSD DRIVES WITH THAT UPDATE???".  There are NO README files saying if the firmware update fixes TRIM or powersave features on teh SSD.  All i need to know is what they had to fix so I can try to get Crucial to release a firmware for their MX100 drives to fix this same issue.

Hello everyone. I'm looking for some help with a little install shield issue I'm having. I bought a Logitech G35 headset today (What can I say, I like Call of Duty) and came home to install it's special program needed to run all the bells and whistles on the headset. However, after extracting the .msi from the exe InstallShield comes up and says "The wizard was interrupted before Logitech G35 could be completely installed." Then there is a check box that says Show the Windows Installer log, so I check that, and all it says is "Error 2732.Directory Manager not initialized." I've done some google searching and apparently a lot of the instances of this bug have something to do with 'merge modules' but I honestly have no idea what those are, and don't think it applies to my case. After calling Logitech, I was told it was a problem with my install wizard or windows install. I've also ran some registry repair programs like CCleaner and Free Window Registry Repair.

Before I resort to reformatting, is there anything anyone can think of to rectify it? I consider myself pretty technically savvy, from 1 to 10 probably a 6 or 7, but I've reached my limit with this one. I can provide more information as requested. Thank you in advance!

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

Answer:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

Hi,
My sister has an external hard drive that her mac won't recognised. When I plug it into my windows PC the computer also does not recognise it. It doesn't appear in my computer or device manger.... So I'm guessing it must be dead. The feel the HD spinning tho.

Anyway is there anything I can do to so I can recover her data? A program perhaps.....

Question: dead external HD?

I have a 120G external HD I use for backups that has worked for me fine up to recently. I assembled the thing using a CompUSA external hard drive enclosure & a HD.

Now when I plug it in, the computer doesn't recognize it. The Device Manager has an error by the USB Mass Storage Device and says that the "Device Cannot Start" under Properties>Device Status.

I get the same error on two different computers. Does this mean the HD is dead or possibly a problem with the enclosure? I've tried updating the drivers and using the disc that came with the enclosure but none of that has worked - where as another external HD I have (factory built and more recent) still works fine.

Your thoughts?
JTN

Answer:dead external HD?

I'd lean toward the enclosure with the error you have. Can you pull the drive out and connect it internally to your computer?

Over the last few days, I've been trying out different Linux distros, to see if I could find one that would play nice with my hardware. I was installing to my USB HDD (Western Digital Elements 1TB Model WDBAAU0010HBK&#65279.
This afternoon, I tried a fresh install of the current daily Sabayon, since it's Live DVD seemed to be OK with my hardware, esp my Radeon 6800 HD graphics card. I chose 'replace existing Linux installation' because I wanted it to overwrite the previous installation. All seemed to be going well until an unexpected error popped up and it said that the entire drive had to be reinitialised - this despite the fact that the Linux install was only in 350MB of the drive. I accepted the option to abort, as it said that reinitialising would wipe all the data, but then found that something had gone seriously wrong. First, my PC wouldn't boot with the USB drive installed. Then, after shutting the PC down and booting into Windows 7 64 Pro without the USB drive installed, I found that the drive was not recognised by Windows when I plugged it in. It first said "attempting to install the driver software failed" then the next time, listed it as unrecognised device (a 6 port USB Hub which sounded odd, although there were a total of 6 partitions on it), then subsequently, nothing at all. Now, the drive light is constantly flickering on it, but Windows 7 (and Vista on my laptop) just act like nothing's happened if I connect it.

My 500GB External Hard Drive will connect to my computer and then disconnect itself whenever I try to access it. I also get a message saying "there might be a problem with some files on this device or disk. This can happen if you remove the device before all files have been written to it." I am using Windows XP on my desktop and Windows 7 on my laptop. I cannot access it with either of these. I have tried to "Scan and Fix" with Windows 7 but to no avail. I have tried quite a bit and I am lost. At the very least I would like to get some of the files off of it. Thank You.

This is a Western Digital My Book 500GB, I have heard of others with this problem, but I cannot get it to work. I believe it came about from me copying a large quantity of files and cancelling the copy.

Answer:Dead 500GB External HDD Help!

Does it give any error messages at all, or just fail to connect to it ? Is that the basic USB only essential edition external drive, or does it also have eSATA connection, if so try that. Try one of these boot capable disks; http://www.sysresccd.org/Main_Page , then run some hard drive diagnostics tests; or this one; http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/ , At the Western Digital web site should be diagnostics software to download and burn to a CD-RW. I think it is called; " Data Lifeguard Tools". Or you can boot to a live Linux CD to mount that drive, and access the folders and files to copy them. http://distrowatch.com/

I've had to re-install my pc, and when I connected my external drive, it names it as 'local disk f:'. When I double click on it, it says 'The disk in drive F: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now'. Does this mean the drive is lost along with all my data, or is it just a Windows glitch. Please can anyone help.

Answer:Dead External Drive

If you format the drive then all will be lost, so don't go with that option yet.
What windows version did you install? Do you know what file system is used on the external hard drive? (NTFS - Windows XP/2000 option only or Fat32 - available to all versions)

Well, yesterday I accidently knocked my external drive on to the floor 2 times, and today when turning it back on my entire computer gets random freezed/slowdowns once it connected. I managed to get all the data I wanted off of it back onto my main computer. I tried a quick format on the drive to start new but it doesent seem like it wants to take files.

Has the drive most likely failed? Is there anyway to be compltely sure.
Im going to run HDtune on it ina bit...

Check the cable and both connections (computer end, HDD end, and cable ends) connecting it for any damage. If you have another cable, then try it out. Could also run a full checkdisk on it to see if finds any problems. I see you did it from HD tune, but try it with Windows.

Question: External disk dead

I have a WD desktop (mains powered) 1.5tb USB HD that I bought a few months ago. I don't use it much (maybe 30 accesses from new) and it is never moved from my desk. When not actually in use it is totally disconnected from power and other devices. Recently I tried to use it and it wouldn't power up - totally dead. The previous time it had worked perfectly, and as always I had been careful to dismount it correctly. I tried the external power supply in another similar drive I have and it worked just fine. I tried the proven power supply from that other external drive in the faulty one and nothing ... still dead. The drive is under warranty, but I have confidential material on it that I do not want anyone else to see, so I don't want to send it to WD (a waste of time anyway, from previous experience).
Not powering up it is of course not recognised by Windows.
Can any one suggest what may have gone wrong and what I can do about it?

If you can get the Drive out I would suggest trying it in another Case. As the Electronics may have failed in the case

Hi.

My external hard drive died a few days ago. It was working fine, and suddenly, it wouldnt connect and wasnt showing up on the network. I realize this probably wasnt the best thing to do, but we took it apart to try to put the harddisks into the same model, as a final effort to recover some of the data. That didnt work, and the disk appear to be scratched slightly. I know with the scratches and the taking apart deal that my data is probably lost forever, but I'm wondering if there is any hope of recovery. It was stupid of me to put all my data (2 years of pictures) onto the disk drive without backing up (I am kicking myself), but im pleaing for any advice or possible recovery methods??

Answer:external hardrive dead

yes, it's possible to recover your data on a dead drive. but it usually isn't cheap.
it involves taking the hard drive to a lab, where they physically take the disk platters out and read what's on them

look up a hard drive data recovery specialist, and find out roughtly what they charge. then you'll just have to decide for yourself whether it's worth the cost

A few months ago my external hard drive stopped working. At first the power light would come on but the hard drive wouldn't boot up. I think I may have plugged the wrong wattage from another cord mistakenly into it and from that point on, the power light stopped coming on. I decided to get a new printed circuit board from a reputable data recovery company in Canada. In addition to purchasing the PCB from them, they advise that the old/dead PCB be sent to them so they can swap the BIOS info from the old one onto the new one for better compatibility. The company claims they never received my old PCB (I tracked it and it shows delivered).

Is there any way I would still be able to recover my data from my external hard drive since I no longer have the old PCB?"

When I plug it in, it whirs and clicks as if it is working. The light comes on and stays lit solid, But I can't detect it on any computer I plug it into. I am assuming it has died...
Is there any way to recover from an external HDD if it's not detected? I have recovery software, but I can't see it, I can't recover it. Any suggestions on recovery?
Please help... There are GIGS of pictures and stuff that is ONLY on this HDD.

Answer:Maxtor One Touch external HDD DEAD

It could be a problem with the enclosure. Try removing the HDD from the caddy and plug it directly to SATA. If it clicks the same then it could be a problem with the PCB or heads. Don't open the HDD's lid as this will allow dirt to make contact with the platters, unless you know what you're doing.

The drive has to acquire first on Device Manager before you can use recovery softwares.

Hey barryo welcome to majorgeeks.... First off..... yes you can recover the Data

There are a few ways to do so, but first a nice simple and safe one.....

Have you got an Ubuntu disc? ..... if not download the ISO and burn one ... www.ubuntu.com

Then boot the disc and locate the option at the top of the desktop called "Places" select that and you should see the hard drive listed in ther, and you should be able to copy or move them wherever you want.

If you have any issues just post i will be on here all night now so you are not alone

Answer:Dead External Hard Drive?

You can try opening up the enclosure and hooking it directly up to your computer - unless its still under warranty (cracking the enclosure open will void your warranty with it).

Though if it's clicking and it's the actual Click of Death....then there's little hope. You can try removing it from the enclosure and doing the freezer trick...but no guarantee it'll work.

============================================

If you plan to recover files, DO NOT plug a drive with Vista or 7 on it into an XP computer. As soon as XP mounts the drive, it will first revert the version of NTFS to its older version and then delete all the shadow copies of files on the drive. That will leave only the originals for recovery and if they are damaged, no copies. With shadow copies, you could have 6 or 8 possibilities for recovering each file. Of course, if the drive is working fine and you are sure the files are all right, then one copy is enough.

Hello forum members. I need ur help. My company is in problem. A month ago one of our cust gave a external HDD for analysis its condition. So we took it and we told it would take some time as we were busy with our work. We could not complete the operation within the time so we returned the HD without any changes. After few days back the cust calls us back claiming that we have stolen his data from the Ext HD. As we didn't see any data present in that, he expects us to make the recovery . He has also given a Police complaint now, which our manager has to face the summons now. The cust is asking for the recovery and he even not negotiating for money. Our manager is speaking serious honestly with this matter. So if I/We can recover data from it, what are the steps to be taken? A company named Stellar Is charging 80,000 INR for the recovery. So six months ago i bought this external hard drive, 1.5TB capacity, from a brand named Leadership.

I put 700GB of all my files, accumulated over years, on it. Didn't make any backup, i figured i'd do it after 1 year, when it got a bit older, because i didn't imagine it could fail so soon. Now the HD appears to have died without any previous notice; it was working perfectly just a few days ago. The symptons are that the PC doesn't recognize the HD, and it doesn't seem to be spinning, it just makes some quick noise every second, like it's trying to start spinning but doesn't.

Please no one lesson me about my stupidity because i believe i already paid for it :cry

Anyways, i just need to know one thing. Two, actually. The first is whether there's any other possible explanation for this other than that it's dead.

The second is whether there's any risk to the data with the passing of time. I intend to keep this HD safe in my room until, in a few years, price for data recovery of 700GBs goes down considerably.

Answer:Dead external hard drive

Sorry to hear about your woes.

In theory the data on the HD should be fine with no degradation.

As regards the issue which you have described, HDs can go belly up suddenly or by way of giving some warning signs ie odd noises.

I am guessing that your external enclosure is of the 3.5" variety and has an independent power brick. Perhaps the enclosure itself is in someway faulty or the power brick has an issue.

The only way to be sure in what has failed is to remove the drive from the enclosure and either connect it to an IDE/SATA to USB2 connector or mount it in a pc as a secondary drive.

Appreciate that this must be a bitter lesson for you but the golden rule to follow with valuable data is to have it backed up in at least 2 different locations.

Good Luck

Hi,
I have a HP Personal Media Drive which didn't seem to be working, both when I put it in to the bank in the tower of the PC and also when I connected the USB and power cables externally.
Thinking it was a problem with the actual enclosure I purchased another external hard drive enclosure from CIT. Having connected it all up and switching it on all I seem to be getting is a flashing blue light from the enclosure and the actual drive doesn't seem to be on and isn't making a noise/heating up.
The hard drive is a Maxtor DiamondMax 9 160Gb ATA.
Does anyone have any idea what possibly might be the problem and how I may solve it?
Thanks

I have a 5-year-old Dell 4100, Windows ME, Pent III. I think my CD-writer is dead (it thinks CD-Rs are CD-RWs - have tried here and at Adaptec/Roxio for advice but to no avail). (Ģ25 ) This LaCie CD-RW drive offers fast recording speeds for storing and archiving your valuable data, as well as simple setup and installation. Hey all,

Just wondering if an external drive is dead based on this --

I have a Seagate FreeAgent Desk and last week when I plugged into computer after 6 months or so of no use, it wasn't recognized. LED lights didn't come on at all. So I thought it was a bad power supply. Switched that out but no luck. Tonight I transferred to a Dynex enclosure. Powers up but still nowhere on computer, not in device manager or disk management. Any other things to try or is the drive itself gone?

Answer:Opinion on whether Seagate FreeAgent External Dead

Sounds like the hdd isn't spinning up in either enclosure. if possible I would connect it to the enclosure & not completely reassemble, try it on your PC, and put your ear down on the top of the drive & listen, do you hear the motor spinning up?! if the drive is not spinning up, there isn't much you can do. if the data is valuable, then try a data recovery company - I have had excellent success with http://www.300dollardatarecovery.com/ if the data is not valuable then I'd replace the drive and toss that one out.

Post back, Hope this helps!

Hi guys i'm hoping someone can offer me advice as I have a serious problem with my laptop.

I installed SP1 a couple of weeks ago and all has worked fine (except DVD Shrink which won't now load.)

I also installed Ubuntu 8.04 around the same time and for the past two weeks I have had an awesome dual-boot experience.

The other day I bought an external monitor and installed the driver with no problem, the screen worked and I set it as clone dual screen setting.

Upon rebooting however my laptop will not start properly. The lights come on and it tries for a second then powers down. If the power cord is plugged in it then tries again 2 seconds later automatically and stays turned on, however the screen is completely dead, the hard drive does not sound like it is doing anything, no keys have any effect and I have to hold the power button to power down.

I have tried booting with the Vista recovery disk, the ubuntu live cd and the Flash BIOS DVD I used about a month ago. The drive spins the disks and reads for a few seconds then stop and nothing.

I am suspecting the graphics driver and SP1 are the culprits but could also be something to do with the GRUB bootloader in ubuntu or could just be hardware failure.

If someone is able to at least indicate which is likely and if there is any way I can at least get the BIOS back and working I would be eternally grateful.

Thanks

Answer:Dead laptop from external monitor after SP1 install

Not sure what the problem was but by removing the battery and holding the power down to completely discharge it now starts fine....strange!

Answer:Dead freeagent go external hard drive... how to fix?

First, try another cord. Also jiggle the cord and push on the connectors to attempt a more positive connection. See if that brings the drive to life on the system.

Try plugging the drive intro another USB port, preferably one of the ports connected directly to the motherboard. The most common problem with these portable drives is poor connections and/or poor power supply through the USB port or cable.

You can pull the drive out of the case and then connect it to a PC (desktop) using standard power and SATA connectors. This will test to see if the drive is good and if there is a problem with the interface in the case.
