I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Maxtor OneTouch 4 Mini 250GB "no external drive selected"

This is really a question for Maxtor customer support, since the drive works in windows the drive is fully working as far as my help goes, notice the maxtor helper doesn't detect any drives and you have many connected, I would first try reinstalling and updating the maxtor application, I would also try removing some of the other drives you have connected since there are Five.

Try this, go to control panel, admin tools, computer management , diskmanagement , right click drive and make sure your backup partition is marked as active, since it shows in my computer it should already be.

Right click the drive in computer, properties, security and make sure you have full admin privileges.

My Maxtor Onetouch II external drive is 1.5 years old. All of a sudden two days ago it stopped working. The drive used to show up as F in my computer. When I go to Disk Management in Windows XP, the drive is called Disk 1 and lists the drive as unavailable. Under system in control panel I do see the drive. In other words, the computer seems to see the drive, but does not give it a drive letter. What would do this and how can I fix the problem?

Thank you.

....I will seriously have a heart attack if I can't get this solved. I'm borderline an emotional breakdown right now. Excuse the length, I’m just letting you all know exactly what I did (well, from what I remember and to the best of my ability anyway). Sorry if some details are unnecessary; I just have to type it out (feel free to skim).
As stated in the title, I have a Maxtor OneTouch 4 hard drive (500 GB) that I've had for about a year or so (maybe more, maybe less; my memory really sucks). Yesterday, when I put some WinRAR and WinZip files in one of my folders and extracted them, I realized that I couldn’t delete them afterward. When I tried to delete those .rar and .zip files, a pop up window came up saying that my hard drive is unreadable, corrupt, inaccessible…yada, yada, yada, and gave me the error code 0x80070571. I tried a few more times and it still didn’t work, so of course at that point I was like “wtf”. Afterward, I tried to copy some files onto the hard drive, and the same message came up.
That’s when I became worried.
Being the "optimist" that I am, I figured that maybe if I restart my laptop or disconnect and reconnect my hard drive, everything will be fine, but that hidden feeling of doom that I get at moments like these told me otherwise. I have the worst luck when it comes to electronics (especially lately…You don’t even want to know).
And, like always, that feeling was right.

Answer:HELP. Maxtor OneTouch 4 (500 GB) External Hard Drive ISSUE!

First I agree that some services r so expensive, its cheaper to buy a new 1 than to service. This hapenned to me long ago a few times and one of these 2 always worked 4 me, 1. Move the folder ur trying to acess to a different location, or 2, put the harddisk in another HDD slot, if u have 1.... u probably do look around XD I didnt really understand the part about backup going into corrupt folder, wouldnt it make more sense just to make a new backup? sorry if im rong I didnt really understand there

I've just purchased this 500gb external hard drive for 70. It seemed a good deal for the money. I wanted an external hard drive to store all my digital photos as I have hundreds of them and they are taking up too much space on my laptop.

Anyone used one of these and do you think its a good buy for the money?

Hey, everyone. I could REALLY use some help here...

I have a Maxtor External Drive OneTouch 4.
I keep all of my photography and files and everything important for work on it.

Well literally like an hour ago, my cat decided it was time to knock it off my desk (along with a ton of other stuff) and the drive fell about 2 feet. I wouldn't say it was a hard hit, since it fell on top of some other stuff. But it WAS turned on at the time when it fell...

I'm so mad that this happened, and of course, it's my fault for walking away from it...

But the point is, it won't show up on my computer when plugged in. It still turns on, and I can hear that the drive tries to turn on/spin but instead it just makes a quick beeping sound and does nothing. Also, my windows normally notifies me whenever a device or drive is being used/turned on by making a notification sound when anything is plugged into the USB -- this isn't happening anymore either.

Is there anyway to save my external drive? These files are extremely important to my work so I need all the help I can get in recovering them. If an external drive isn't working, does that mean all the data is gone? Or is it just the machine that isn't running? I don't really know anything about how the inside of an external drive works...can the data be removed and put into another working external drive? Should I take it into a computer shop...?

Please help.

ok i needed to reformat my computer and my external hard drive was plugged in as well. the xp disc was in and then my friend hit the down arrow and reformat selecting the external not the internal. before it got to 2% i turned my computer off. now when i plug the external in to the usb nothing shows up as being there. is there anyway that some of my stuff is still on it and if not how do i go about making it show up again? if anyone could help it would be highly appreciated. thanks

Answer:Maxtor A01A250 OneTouch 7200 RPM 250 GB External Hard Drive problem

in order to reformat you need to delete the existing partition. That part pretty much nuked your ability to see the data. You may try data recovery software(do a search). Or you can pay someone to do it for you(expensive). Depends on what you have on there and what it's worth to you. Don't get your hopes up though as there is no guarantee your data is recoverable.

Ok, this is a brand new Maxtor OneTouch III 60GB Mini USB 2.0 external HDD.
I have XP Pro (yes, admin user).

When I first plugged the thing in, XP installed it, including the OneTouch software which was on the drive itself (it came with NO CD).

I played around with the software, it worked, I did a backup, etc... I set the settings the way I wanted. I unplugged it and plugged back in and tried the button on the drive, all was well.

Then I noticed a new Maxtor process that was taking 50% resources. I looked it up and it was the Sync process which continually checks your selected backup folders for file changes. I looked up the process and it is not needed if you aren't using the Sync feature. I wasn't, I was using the normal backup feature. So I removed the process from startup.

Well a couple days later I tried to do a backup and it wouldn't do it. Instead of showing files being backed up, it just sat there saying "Backup Process" with no other text. I left it overnight, it was still sitting there saying the same thing.

Now that is the background. Here is the problem:

If I hover over the OneTouch icon in the system tray, it says "Backup to OneTouch III Complete!"
I don't know what "complete" means, it always says like, like it's stuck or something?

I have the above stated external usb harddrive. One one computer I have windows recognizes it just fine and it comes up in my computer and I can copy files to it. On my mom's laptop, however, it says the same thing, I get a message saying "your harddrive is installed and ready to use" and when I go to device manager is shows up how it should, everything looks like it should be working, but it doesn't show up in my computer.

Any suggestions on how I might be able to get this to work?

thanks.

Do they both have the same Operating System? It should work fine on XP but on 2000 or 98/Me you will probably need a driver.

How can I recover what is on it when I can't detect it. I have recovery software, but if it can't see it, it can't recover it. Any suggestions on recovery?

The hard drive is a Western Digital 320 GB that I've had plugged into this computer before (and worked). Then i got a virus and had to do a recovery of windows.

Ever since then I can't get windows to recognize/show it in my computer. I just "disabled" and "enabled" it in device manager to no effect. I have a C, D, and E drive which are: two partitions on the hard drive, and then the CD drive (respectively).

So i'm stuck, not sure where to proceed since it's obviously not the hard drive itself, I use it on my xbox all the time. What next?

Does it show in Disk Management ? ?

Hi. I was hoping to shed light on an issue following installation (plug-n-play) of a Maxtor OneTouch 4 External HDD using Vista Home Premium, SP1.

I formatted the drive using NTFS (default). Drive runs fine (simply using as a music archive) until about 1-2 hours in, causes computer to reboot. Sometimes, I get the blue screen of death, telling me hardware was improperly installed.

Called Seagate and they ensured me the drive was a PnP and that no drivers were required to install it in Vista. They ruled out the drive being the cause.

Would anyboy have any leads on isolating this issue or might know the solution off hand? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I thought I'd try here as well as the Maxtor tech support, but they're all bureaucratic and long-winded.

I think my drive has a power supply error, a friend of mine plugged his laptop power cable into it by accident, and the ampage for his laptop was like three times the ampage the drive took.. so I think the power enclosure on the rear of the drive may be damaged, has anyone had this problem before and if so, is there any other way I can fix it without having to pay Maxtor alot of money?

I think I'm having the same problem as a post by dtrulez

Thanks for any advice,

I just transfered some data from Maxtor OneTouch II to my computer, but suddenly it stopped and showed raw datas. Then I restart the windows XP and tried to fix it when it booted up (it said that some of the files and chain files are truncated - I don't understand what that means to my data ) . So now, the external drive no longer show raw datas but a folder named found.000 filled with thousands of "chk" files and a file named &2&2.

I then tried the latest Powermax from Maxtor, but it turned out that Powermax doesn't detect external harddrive (Mine is USB2.0). So no luck there?

Is there anyway to recover the data back? Or am I pretty much out of luck and have to reformat the HD ?

Answer:External Maxtor OneTouch II 200G corrupted - How to recover the data?

Those check files can be opened in Notepad. Although as it is in fragments you only find some pieces of readable text. All this can be cut and pasted, but a laborious job. It could be transfered to desktop (if you have one) to run Powermax to see if that would have more success.

Install win7 x64 (ultimate) runs fine. After about a week, this error appears in when starting task scheduler.I know something is wrong because of scheduled task will not run, so I check task scheduler and get this error. So, I check the registry entries for scheduled tasks and make them match the %systemroot%\system32\tasks folder. The error goes away.... BUT  and this is what no one else checks, go ahead and click "display all running tasks".Good luck!  "Task Scheduler cannot access Task Scheduler"...  ie. media center will no longer wake up and record shows..defrag will not run.. nothing scheduled.  In some test installs, the machine will no longer go to sleep!!.(and yes.. I tried uninstall MCE and Reinstalling it along with any other apps)Task scheduler is still broken and will not function.  You can add a new task, but the normal required system tasks no longer exist. So Win7 is broke!!   Just becaues the Task {0} error is gone doesn't prove anything! After dealing with this for about 2 months straight I'm about to send Balmer screen shots of the damn error messages and ask why there are no answers for this or why is task scheduler locked out to to the local admin. Why are there not verbose debugging tools available so I can try and find out exactly what it happening? You see, I'm 99% sure something in windows is doing this and corrupting itself. It's not a external program. How do I know?? because in many of my test... Read more

I came across this error in the Task Scheduler when checking scheduled task and it happened as soon as the application was opened so I did a little searching and found out the first occurrence was due to the Defrag schedule and found a solution for that here :

[/IMG]

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...s/01e60fa1-8004-40b4-9cf0-247fb80edb56?auth=1

So now that took care of that error and decided to check a few more folders and sure enough I located another error of the same having to do with the AppID folder in the TaskScheduler Windows folder and it seems as though the PolicyConverter entry is missing from the task scheduler in this folder and more than likely from the Reg. I have not done a search there yet but it is located in the Windows Task folder system files . I will cut to the quick here and ask shouldn't I be able to import export that entry from a system Reg that has the entry to the system that does not have the entry and reboot and go back into the TaskScheduler to see if the entry is there now ? Of course I would first back up the system Reg or probably just do a complete back up first the continue .

I have attached some more Images for anyone's ? if need be .

I preformed sfc /scannow more than once with no results .

The images below are from a working system .

I have a Dell Dimension 4550, with Win XP Pro, put in a salvaged Maxtor internal 40GB drive for extra storage, specifically a Maxtor 2F040L0 according to the device manager.

The problem is the second drive doesn't show up in "My Computer".

The main drive, a WD 160 GB: WDC WD1600BB-22GUC0, and the maxtor drive show up in in the device manager, no Exclamation points or Xs by either, I right-clicked on the maxtor drive and clicked properties the properties window came up and said there was no problem.
Opened Volumes tab and clicked populate, got an error: "Volume information for this Disk cannot be found. This may happen if the Disk is a 1394 or a USB device on a Windows 2000 Machine", this same error happens in the volumes tab for the Maxtor and the Western Digital, which is working just fine, so it may be a red herring

Attempted to update driver, no updates available, attempted a rollback of driver, no backups.
Uninstalled the driver and restarted, driver reinstalled but still having the same issue.
Downloaded and installed MaxBlast from Maxtor/Seagate website, no change.
shut down PC, Disconnected drive, restarted computer with just the main drive, works fine, shutdown and reconnected maxtor drive, restarted with both drives, maxtor drive still not showing in My Computer.

Now the drive may not have been wiped before the other machine crapped out, but I don't Know of any way to format it without a drive Letter.

Hi All,

My W8.1 laptop has recently started going to "Locking" mode when I press the power button (on the machine) and/or select "Shutdown" from the start menu. I've checked the power settings and the PC is definitely set for shutdown as opposed to some other function such as sleep, hibernate, etc.

So basically after I click or press the power button, the screen schows "Shutting Down" (as would be expected) but after a few seconds changes to "Locking". Once the operation is complete I'll need to tap any key (to wake it up) and then click shutdown from there. Only then will the machine fully shutdown.

I'm not sure how this behavior began but I haven't been able to trace it back to 3rd party software. ANy thoughts or solutions appreciated! Thanks.

Trying to install drivers for the Visioneer OneTouch 9020 USB scanner on my 64-bit install of Windows 7 Ultimate. The scanner is from 1999 so it was made for Windows 98 and therefore made with 32-bit drivers. Windows 7 won't install the drivers unless they are 32-bit. I have checked the manufacturer's website (Visioneer OneTouch 9000 and 9020 Drivers and Manuals) and found that they dropped support after XP. I have also tried compatibility mode when running the program, but that didn't change anything and I still got the error message.

Answer:"Visioneer OneTouch 9020 USB" scanner drivers on 64-bit

For the desktop FIRSTLY put XP on a relatively small partition and then reinstall Windows7 as part of a dual boot system, by editing boot.ini to reduce default 25s delay to several seconds then if the scanner needs to be used go to XP within that time otherwise continue as normal.

So I've been up for hours this morning, fighting with a brand new Seagate 500Gb Extension 2.5" portable hard drive.
While transferring 120Gb of information from the drive to an internal drive, it often stops copying/moving halfway through. It seems to happen mostly on large (1Gb+ files), but has also happened on smaller 200Mb files.
When it stops copying/moving, the destination drive is accessible, but if I try to access the files on the 2.5" it freezes and gives me the not responding message. If instead of accessing the files however, I click on my computer in the same window, the copying/moving resumes!

Prior to discovering this, I had been opening task manager and attempting unsuccessfully to kill the processes, and then explorer, which would close but not restart itself. I then had to open powershell and restart explorer from there.

Unplugging the 2.5" would also stop the hung copy process, and I'm hoping it hasn't corrupted any of my files! (only tried it twice).

The Seagate came default formatted in NTFS, and I'm using W7 64bit. I also have USB suspend disabled.

Any ideas?

Answer:2.5" External drive "falls asleep"?!?!

Sorry if this is the wrong forum.

Yesterday my external hard drive was working fine. Today I open it and there's a new folder called Pfiles...I am not running linux...and a tmp file. I delete the tmp file and try to delete Pfiles but it won't delete. Weird. So I open one of the folders and see that it's now empty, as are almost all of my other folders and subfolders. My daughter's folder however has her movies on the main subfolder, but subfolders in this folder are also empty.

The hard drive is showing half full...exactly what it should assuming I could access all the files. So what can I do? I've enclosed a screenshot of the Disk Management screen for this drive. Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Answer:Help with external hard drive. Files "missing" but still taking up space on the drive

Hi djfl,

External Hard-drives come in different types, some of them are, External storage devices and Automatic back-up devices.

If it is an automatic back-up device then data might be backed-up on the External Hard?drive without user intervention.

If it is an External storage device the files might be hidden. This could be the reason why the external Harddrive is showing half full. We can check if the files are hidden, please use the following link for detailed instructions to unhide folders: Hidden Files and Folders Option - Add or Remove

Please revert back for clarification.

Hello, I've recently done a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate and one of my harddrives is not showing up correctly. The harddrive itself is my Local Disk D, it hasn't got any system files on it however it is displaying at the wrong size:

The problem lies in the fact that on boot my Computer's BIOS detects the harddrive as a 233GB harddrive. This is not a problem as I understand that the harddrive itself isn't the exact size as what it says on the box, however the Windows 7 installation and Windows itself only detects the harddrive as being 148gb.

What I've Tried Doing:
I've tried different things to resolve this issue. I've looked at the Disk Management, but there are no extra partitions and I've also looked at the harddrive in Partition Manager which again only picked up 149gb and no unallocated space.
I've run a partition recovery tool in Partition Manager which did not detect any lost partitions containing the rest of the harddrive.

Answer:IDE Maxtor 250gb Hard drive Problem.

Hello samboyd93. Welcome to the forum.

The only thing I can think of is that the drive is set as a SATA2 drive on an older computer that only does SATA1 (please fill in your "My System Specs" to help avoid these kinds of guesses) although I doubt it.

If you look at the back of the HDD there are jumper pins. Setting a jumper sets the SATA speed on most drives. You may need to consult the HDD's documentation to see what the different jumper positions do. Every manufacturer has a different setup.

I would try setting the drive as SATA1 to test. But both drives should be at the same setting. Also try plugging the problem drive into a different port or using a different SATA cable. Can't hurt, might help.

You should also go into your BIOS and check the settings for that drive and compare them to the settings for the other drive. They should be the same.

Hope that helps.

Hi
I have recently updated to the creator version
My files end up in unintended destinations. When I click in the documents tab in the sidebar of the documents screen, it takes me to a ?Documents? folder that appears in ?One Drive? group. Any files that I send from my desktop end up there
Those files are also shown when I open the first ?Documents? folder that appears in the ?Quick Access? group. I have similar problems with ?Pictures? folders
I have attached screen shots that I hope will explain. I want all my files of any description to end up in the ?Documents? folder contained in the ?This PC? group. Can anyone help please?
Incidentally, I don?t understand the purpose of ?One Drive?, and don?t believe that I will have a use for it. Can I remove/disable it?

I was using my external HD to backup data from my laptop (I plan on doing a system recovery).  The HD had originally been hooked up to my PC with no problems.  A few minutes in, the transfer stops and I get a message that the drive is not ready.  Now when I try to access the hard drive from either the PC or the laptop I get a message that says "Please insert a disk into drive (letter of the drive):".  Something I noticed, not sure if it's relevant, is that originally the HD was (G:) on the PC.  When I connected it to my laptop, the drive was recognized as (F:).  After I got the error and connected it back to the PC the HD was recognized as (F:), same as the laptop but different than it originally was on the PC.I'm running XP Home on both the PC and laptop. Can anyone please help?

Answer:External Hard Drive Problem - "Please insert a disk into drive _:"

I may be mistaken, but I understand, that external HD will work only with the computer on which it was created.Have that external HD ever worked? Is it genuine external HD, or internal with enclosure?

Hi guys. I'm new here. I've tried to read all the discussion about how to fix the unallocated hard drive but I just can't understand it as the cases were pretty much different than I'm facing of.

Here's my problem.
Yesterday my external hard drive seems normal, everything is fine, until there's a blackout and I have to put "sleep" to my laptop. After the power got back, the hard drive suddenly gone and when I check the list of drives under "Disk Management", it showed up as "Disk 1 - Unallocated".

(I've attached screenshots here for your viewing)

My external hard drive is WD My Passport 1TB. It contains a lot of valuable data I cannot afford to lose. I really hope there's a way to fix this, and once I get back all of those precious data I will buy another HD to transfer them ASAP because I cant let this happen to me again.

Your help is so, very much appreciated.
Any questions regarding my problem, let me know. I'll provide all of the details you guys need.

NOTE
1) I've tried TestDisk but on the "Analyse" process, it says "read error"
2) I've changed cable, but the situation remains the same.
3) I've tried Recuva, but it doesnt recognize my external drive.

Answer:WD EXTERNAL HARD DISK 1TB suddenly "unallocated" and "not initialized"

Hi!

First don't mess up with the WD drive settings.. download partition wizard 7 (its free)..then .. open it ..click wizard(menu) .. select partition recovery wizard.. and it will find the partitions on it i think.. that way you can recover your partition that has been lost.

With EaseUS Backup Tool, I've cloned these two partitions ("System Reserved" and "C") to same-sized partitions on a external HDD ("X" and "Y"). Picture tells it concisely:
How to make drives "X" and "Y" boot-able?

In "Disk Management", I've noticed these partition labels missing:"X" (or "System Reserved") is missing System label,
"Y" (or "OS") is missing Boot, Page File and Crash Dump labels

Thank you!

Answer:Both "System reserved" and "C" partition cloned to external HDD: boot?

You cannot boot Win7 on external HD, unless it is connected via eSATA.

I've been getting the "delayed write failed" error message every time I try to backup a DVD with DVD Shrink to my externail USB hard drive. I've backed up a good many DVDs this way, and haven't had this problem before. Meanwhile I continue to be able to copy other, somewhat smaller files (180MB vs 4GB in DVD Shrink) to the drive without any trouble.

When the error message appears it seems that the computer suddenly no longer recognizes anything on the external drive. Sometimes it still recognizes that the drive is there, even tells me how much space is used up on it, but when I look at the files in Windows Explorer, the files show up as empty, or not at all.

When I try to safely unplug the drive, I'm told there's a problem with ejecting the drive, that it can't be stopped right now. I've waited for several hours to be allowed to stop it, but keep getting the same message. I usually turn off the computer and finally unplug it. When I plug it back in, it sometimes autoplays and all the files are there, sometimes it's not recognized at all until I unplug and plug it back in repeatedly.

I've looked online and there are so many people having problems with that error message, I can't make heads or tails of the issue. The only thing I've tried from the Microsoft site is that I turned cache writing off for the external drive (not the internal one) under policies, which I thought is supposed to make it possible to unp... Hi Everyone!
I am having a serious problem
I bought a new 200Gb external hard drive...after formatting it using NTFS, I now try to open it in Windows Explorer and I get an error saying "invalid parameter", and that's it...it's not opening.
I use WinXP, there is nothing I can do with the HD anymore...anyone has any idea of what I could do?
Thanks a million

Answer:"invalid parameter" opening external Hard Drive

Try reformatting it if possible. Does windows detect it still. Try reinstalling usb drivers to make sure thats correctly functioning. Make sure you have updated drivers for motherboard and os as they could be a strange but possible fix to the problem your having. Let me know if you still have this problem after the above suggestions.

I have -- "had" -- two SimpleTech external hard drives. One I purchased last year, 320G, and it worked perfectly. But it had an adaptor, and I was getting tired of all the wires cluttering my small computer desk, so I wanted to buy an external hard drive powered by USB only. So last week, I bought a Signature Mini, also by SimpleTech, that was capable of being powered by USB. After formatting it MS-DOS, following the instructions to prep it for use on both Macs and PCs, I transferred all my files from the old drive to the new drive. Then, since I have a Macbook, I used Disk Utility > Zero All Data, to erase all the data from my old drive -- data, which had successfully transferred to my new drive. I planned to give this old drive to my dad.

Using my other laptop which has Windows XP, I began to download some of my data from an online storage website that is going to shut down in about a month. I downloaded these files directly into my new external hard drive, and left the download running overnight.

The next morning, the download was finished, so I unplugged the new drive and plugged it back into my MacBook. The new drive began making clicking noises, and it wasn't showing up on my desktop. I immediately knew that these noises meant an internal hardware problem, so I unplugged the drive immediately. Since then, I have occasionally plugged the new drive in just to see if the problem possibly corrected itself, but it still makes clicking noises and refuses t... Read more

Help - Please!!!  My Desktop decided to install the Windows 10 updates to my Windows 7 environment -- oh the joys!  Nothing but trouble ever since.  I uninstalled 10 to take me back to 7.
Upon reboot all was fine for a day.  Then, black screen with a cursor.  What the heck?  I checked all the things I was told to check, I ran all the diagnostics.  I uninstalled, reinstalled, did a system restore back to before the update.
After spending 3+ hours letting my system go thru the recommended ePSA Preboot System Assessment (All Tests Passed) - Today I have a system that I can't get to boot up because it says I have:
Status:  Oxc000000f
"The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccessible."
I'm not a computer geek.  I can't get thru to anyone at Dell.  I've been trying to resolve this for 4 days now.
The only thing I can think that is happening is that the computer is trying to boot from an external hard drive that is in a "locked/password protected" mode on my system.  I have no idea how to bypass this.  I've tried unhooking the drive and rebooting and then it just goes back to black screen with a cursor.
Can anyone help me?  Please?

Hello A friend of mine's father passed away suddenly, and she gave me an external hard drive to try and retrieve pictures from for his funeral this upcoming Thursday, she said it malfunctioned when it was knocked over and fell a few hours ago.. I tried it with the case still on and Windows wouldn't even recognize it, so I took apart the case of the external drive and removed the SATA WD Desktop drive to my Hard Drive reader, it shows the Drive under the letter:F and says "The F: Drive needs to be reformatted before any access".. Is there anyway I can retrieve the data from this drive with the current tools I have (Drive reader), along with a potential program perhaps? or will they need to escalate this to a data recovery place that takes the platter completely out and retrieves the information that way?

I am using Windows 7 64 Bit, and this drive reader is pretty good never let me down in the past, I'm just stuck.. Thanks!

My daughter's laptop was hit by a virus (I think) which seems to have overwritten the boot sector and / or the partition table. I can't even re-install XP pro because the XP cd doesn't detect a hard drive. If I connect this "faulty" drive to another notebook all the data seems intact BUT:

Scanning it with Bitdefender does not detect any malware and all the folders are accessible except the C:\documents and settings\"her personal folder".

This folder returns "access denied" whatever password I use.

Can anyone give me an idea as to how to access this folder before I reformat and reinstall XP?

thanks and regards

Answer:External USB drive folder "access denied" after virus??

To take ownership of a folder, follow these steps:Right-click the folder that you want to take ownership of, and then click Properties
Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
In the Name list, click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory <folder name>. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?

All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes

Note <folder name> is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.

Now see if the folder is accessible.

Hello 7Forums Guru's. I've never used external media and am trying to decide on a partition scheme for data storage (ISO's, music, pictures about 100-150 gb) and to store weekly backups, system image etc) but before I even start on that end, should my external HDD (Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB) be set to active? The drive was completely plug & play and showed up in Disk Management as "Active"

Please advise this relative n00b.

Attachment 331314

Answer:New Seagate External Hard Drive Marked "Active"

Only a partition from which one boots needs to be active and going by this dictum there is absolutely no need for a partition on an external drive to be active. Though an active partition on an external drive should not matter it is always safe to have only the booting Partition as active.

You can turn a partition active or inactive using diskpart.

Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right click on Command Prompt and Run as administrator.

Then:

Be sure to select the correct external disk and partition.

calvary-storage

I was browsing external storage devices and came across this one from Cavalry. It made me think about those 20 or smaller hard drives I have laying around my house doing absolutely nothing. This device looks fairly simple and I could just plug in a couple of drives without any work and transfer all the information on to one of my tb drives. My question does anyone have one of these and if so how do they perform. I can buy one for about $35. but wanted an opinion before I bought one.

Answer:Is it worth the price "Cavalry external drive dock"

Hi Bug,

Sounds like a great idea. I too have stacks of drives, but really no need for such a device. I have lots of comps sitting around so I very often whip off a side panel, unplug a CD reader and stick another drive onto the comp for various reasons. The device you speak of would be similar to opening an external case, uplugging the drive and plugging another drive onto the cables. Might be great for many comp users.

Hi,
I bought a WD Passport 1 year ago, and I've tried to test it by HD Tune Pro and Hard Disk Sentinel.
And result are listed below:

How could I fix this error? I feel my drive doesn't work softly anymore
Thank you so much!

Answer:How to fix "Current Pending Sector Count" on WD External Drive

What does "work softly" mean?

https://kb.acronis.com/content/9133

which says:

"Current Pending Sector Count S.M.A.R.T. parameter is a critical parameter and indicates the current count of unstable sectors (waiting for remapping). The raw value of this attribute indicates the total number of sectors waiting for remapping. Later, when some of these sectors are read successfully, the value is decreased. If errors still occur when reading some sector, the hard drive will try to restore the data, transfer it to the reserved disk area (spare area) and mark this sector as remapped.

Recommendations

This is a critical parameter. Degradation of this parameter may indicate imminent drive failure. Urgent data backup and hardware replacement is recommended."

You could run checkdisk and see if the number changes.

Or you could reformat, which is a drastic step and may not help.

Or you could adopt a policy of "watchful waiting" and hope. Hope that it doesn't get worse, while keeping your personal data backed up elsewhere.

Or you could throw in the towel and buy a new drive now, if this is causing you to lose sleep.

I have an older 80 gig WD external hard drive that has worked fine until this morning when I turned on my computer and it wasnt showing up when I looked in my computer. So I went into device manage and it says this "This device cannot start. (Code 10)"

I tried unistalling, and then plugging it back in. I tried looking for updates. Anything I could think of, but still not able to access anything. It has ALL my music on it and I really really want to be able to get to it.

If I cant get it to work is it possible to transfer data from this one to a new one??

So I have a Windows 7 64bit desktop with 2 external hard drives that have shared over my network so I can view the files on my laptop(win 7 64bit) and watch movies and such on my xbox via windows media center.

I recently purchased a WD Elements 2TB external Hard Drive.
I connect the new drive to my desktop along with the other 2 external hard drives and functions with no problems until I try to share it on my network.

My procedure for sharing was opening my computer, right clicking on the hard drive, clicking share with.., advanced sharing, (in the sharing tab) advanced sharing again, click the share this folder box and hitting apply. And I get this error, "An error occurred while trying to share G. Incorrect function. The shared resource was not created at this time."

I was however able to add the new external hard drive to my media library in windows media center so my xbox can see the new hard drive no problem.
So now I need to get the drive on the network so I can see it on my laptop.

Whats more, If I disconnect the hard drive from my desktop, and connect it to my laptop, it will let me share it and I can see it from my desktop. (Baffles me...)

Any help or ideas on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I see you have the same issue as I do and are getting about the same help I have been getting, NONE
We will probably find out "Microsoft" will want to charge us extra if we want to share more than one way, they give us ONE free sharing but not 2 without more money.

Hi,

This is my first post on the forum.

I'm having a very difficult time accessing my WD 1 TB Mypassport external drive. PLEASE HELP WITH DATA RECOVERY

I connected the drive using USB. Windows assigns it a drive letter but does NOT display the volume name. Neither does it displays the "free space and space used" information. When I try to click the drive for browsing folders, Windows Explorer just hangs.

I tried opening DiskManagement but that too does NOT display anything. When I disconnect the external drive, it shows up the internal HDD.

Under Device Manager, I can see that the drive is recognized as WD My Passport 0748 USB Device. Checked the drivers and its up-to-date.

I also tried to run minitools Partition Magic Wizard to see if it scans and displays the data but after 50% completion, I cancelled and tried to browse/view for any file. NO LUCK.

Finally, I started CHKDSK /R /F /X command, which has been running for 27 hours now and showing 10% complete. CHKDSK seems to be correcting error in indexes on stage 2 but that has been going on for over 20 hours. I see the light on the drive blinking and hear some light spinning sound.

While CHKDSK is running, I check the Event Logs and see this message "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR4." almost 50,000 times.

Can someone please help me recover/salvage the data? I have been thinking about using few other tools but don't want to interrupt CHKDSK comman... Read more

Hey all, I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 8 and I'm loving it, EXCEPT for this one problem I'm having.

Immediately after I upgraded, my external hard drive (WD Ext HDD 1021 3TB) was missing from "My Computer." I never had any problems with this HDD before I upgraded, and the file-system is NTFS.

The external drive is visible in Disk Management, however there is no letter assigned. Right clicking on the drive's partitions in Disk Management shows every option grayed out except for "Delete Volume."

Upon seeing this, I attempted to use diskpart to assign a new letter, however in diskpart the partition type is listed as "unknown" and when I attempt to assign a letter, diskpart says "there is no volume specified." Listing volumes in diskpart only seems to list the volumes on my internal drive, not the external one.

After reading some articles on similar problems, I tried using the program "MiniTool Partition Wizard" to assign a new drive letter, and it seemed to work! The drive showed up in "My Computer" with the correct name and letter, with all my data intact. In Disk Management, all the drive options were still grayed out, but because I could access my drive, I figured the problem was solved.

However, after a short amount of time, the drive became inaccessible. In "My Computer" the drive's name changed from "cmluepke 3tb external (F:)" to "Local Disk (F:)." Clickin... Read more

Answer:External Hard Drive inaccessible, becomes "Local Disk"

I had this exact same problem with a 16GB Toshiba thumb-drive a few days ago.
I'd been having heat-related shutdowns, and believe this to be what caused the issue in the first place.
Deleting the volume, then re-creating it allowed me to format and assign a drive-letter.
But yes, I did lose the (non-critical - a recorded TV show) data.
I'm not aware of any other 'fixes'.

Hello to all you smart/clever people out there;
My problem started as: My XP SP3 recyling icon howed full but when I opened it to see what was in it, it showed empty (nothing). From the icon it showed 41 files.
I deleted the contents but I did not realise or know that "my computer" and "my documents" folders on drive C were in the recyle bin I had deleted. A total of about 11 000 files - 30Gb.

As I had a saved version on my external "Seagate FreeAgent" hard drive I tried to restore these files for the first time ever. It was more difficult than I thought, I was unable to do so. The instructions only tell of dragging the respective file to the location wanted, but it does not work.

I have all the files from the external drive shown on the PC and load and transfer files that way. I am not allowed to to use the safe disconnection feature of the USB, getting the message to wait until later for disconnection so I leave it permanently connected.

My question for help is: how can I restore the two folders and and their files in a simple procedure.

Thanks to all helpers

Answer:unable to restore from external "freeagent" backup drive

You can't delete the My Computer icon or send it to the Recycle Bin. My Computer has everything on your computer under it, including the protected Windows System files, so it will not let you delete it. You may have deleted the My Documents files, but this too has protected system files that won't let you delete it. If you go to C:\Documents and Settings\[username} is there a My Documents folder there? If so, you can open it up and copy the contents of the My Documents folder in your backup, and paste it into the My Documents folder under your user name.

I recently bought a Western Digital firewire/USB 2.0 combo drive for my Dell laptop running Windows XP Home edition. It worked fine once. When I went to use it again it would not register in "My Computer." It is recognized in device manager and no conflicts appear. There are no new/rolled back drivers available. In Disk Management in Console it appears but shows a large portion of unallocated space. Uninstalling and reinstalling does not work.

Could there be a corrupt Windows file? Does anyone have any suggestions?

Answer:external hard drive not recognized in Windows XP "My Computer"

If it shows unallocated space (how much?), then the drive should be partitioned and the partitions formatted.

What sizes are we talking about? Unallocated space will not appear in My Computer, but only partitions that are formatted and ready to use.

If you have TweakUI or other tweakers, be sure that the drive is not hidden from My Computer.

Unless you've changed any of the default hardware policies for the external drive (most of them won't even allow you to), unplugging without ejecting should not be a problem. Nevertheless, whenever you are unable to eject, it is better to wait till you turn off the computer before unplugging.

First of all I'd like to say hello to everyone on this forum, this will be my first thread/post.

I'm usually the go to guy for my friends for simple computer problems, and my friend came to me today with a problem I just can't figure out.

She received an external 230 gb HDD for christmas and then tried to install her Sim expansions onto it. She gets the message
"Cannot install to the selected directory, because it may cause the system to become unstable"

After googling this issue for about 30 minute I found this is the case for other games as well, but none of these searches yielded any kind of answer of how to get passed this, or why this happens.

As far as I know, her XP HDD is NFTS as well as the external HDD. Has anyone had this problem with The Sims?

Hi All,

I want to format my external hard drive into two partitions so that I can use one of them as a recovery drive for my Windows PC and the other one for my personal data. I am using Windows 8.1.

It is a 1TB WD Elements hard drive currently formatted into one exFAT partition. It is about half full. I don't want to delete the partition and then create two new ones because I have nowhere to backup the files currently on the drive. So I want to shrink the existing partition and then create a new smaller partition but for some reason I can't do that in Windows Disk Management. When I right-click on the drive (E:) The option "shrink drive..." is grayed (as shown in the screenshot).
Does anybody know why this could be? When I right-click on my Windows (C:) drive this option is not grayed out. (I tried doing the same thing using Partition Wizard but I had the same problem - the "split" option, along with a whole lot of others, is grayed out).

Also, another strange thing which might help you to understand. In Partition Wizard, when I right-click on my external hard drive (E:) and click properties it shows that the hard drive is full (first screenshot) even though Windows File Explorer shows that it still has about 500GB of free space (second screenshot)
Why does Partition Wizard (and obviously Windows Disk Management as well) think that the disk is full?

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
William.

Answer:"Shrink Volume" Grayed Out - External Hard Drive

You cannot shrink a FAT disk. Shrinking is only supported with NTFS. You have no choice but to backup your data and re-initialize it as NTFS.

Let me apologize in advance if this is the incorrect place to post this query - I've seen other similar issues posted in "Hardware" so I'm hoping I'm in the right area...

I've seen this issue posted before, and I've Googled my heart out, but I still haven't been able to find answers to my exact problem. I have a 500GB Western Digital MyBook external hard drive which holds all of my music files as well as back-ups of movies and pictures. Whenever I plug it in, I don't have ten seconds before I get the "Delayed Write Failed" error message, and if I happen to be in Explorer at the time it freezes. I've also got Windows XP on my Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop, if that's relevant.

I got the error message two days ago for the first time, while trying to import a cd using iTunes. It imported the first two songs on the album before giving me the error. Since then I haven't been able to use the drive at all, and when trying to get files from it I've gotten errors saying the path was incorrect (as if the hard drive weren't plugged in). I tried using the hard drive yesterday on my dad's IBM laptop (also running XP) and had no problems sifting through the files in Explorer, however opening a movie in Windows Media Player caused that program to freeze. Today I plugged it into the IBM laptop again and tried the same previous album in iTunes, but this time it didn't get past the first song before it gave ... Read more

Answer:"Delayed Write Failed" on External Hard Drive

Check for malware. Also, a delayed write failure is this:

this is how external drives work with xp:

1. you tell a file to be copied to the ed (external drive)
2. Windows checks the file size and compares it to the free space on the ed.
3 Windows allocutes the space needed and queues segments of the file to be copied. (usually 1 file = 1 segment)
4. Windows starts copying segments to the drive in order of the queue.
5. the files finish and the transfer completes.

The delayed write failure is when one of the queued segments fails to copy.
This could be because of the hard drive failing so check for hdd errors but its more likely a windows issue.

I just put about 25 gigs of data on this drive. It's an 80 gig drive and has about 20 gigs of space left on it before it's full. Out of all the files I cut and pasted over it got stuck on this last ISO file.. it refused to move this file.. so i stopped the move operation, and rebooted. I never had any trouble with this drive. It's a drive that is hooked up via a USB port. On reboot, to try to copy or move the file again, Windows tells me this drive cannot be accessed and needs to be formatted before it can be used.

That's not an option, or I'll lose tons of months worth of data. The drive is pretty warm.. I'm letting it cool down to try again, but i cant see any reason why this drive could have been damaged just moving files to it.

Any ideas of other reasons why windows might erroneously fail to detect the drive properly and give me this error?

Hi Folks -

Been a long time since I had a problem I couldn't solve myself, but when I DO come across those, this is ALWAYS where I come, based on the extreme expertise demonstrated by the people who helped me previously. You guys ROCK, really!

So here's the issue in as concise form as I can put it now, will elaborate as required based on questions from anyone trying to offer support.

Some time ago (> 1 yr) I had a M/B failure that forced me to replace the M/B. As a result I knew I had to reinstall the O/S and all the applications & updates I had accumulated over several years (yes I almost cried).

Before I started that task, I backed up both both of the existing partitions, each of which was ~65% capacity. The problem here was that having no bootable O/S, I couldn't access any "proper" GUI backup software, so in the end I resorted to using Robocopy from the command line, and copied EVERYTHING to my 1TB portable drive (Seagate FreeAgent Go).

Over time I gradually reinstalled the O/S and apps, and migrated the data back to where it belonged, and I have now reached the end of that process, with one problem.

The original (and re-installed) O/S is Vista Home Basic 32-bit SP2. After finally moving the last of my data over to the desire location on my HDD, I wanted to delete the last remaining folder(s) from the portable drive and hit a snag. In attempting to delete the top level folder "c_drive_transfer" I got hit with sev... Read more

Answer:Self Replicating "Application Data" Folder on External Drive?!?

If all of the data has now been moved, you can delete the partition on the USB drive and reformat using Disk Management. Or is that something you prefer not to do?

You could try deleting the files offline using Puppy linux. That boots to a root user so you should have no problem deleting the files and folders.

So I have a pretty, well not old, but it's not a product they carry anymore external hard drive and I had some issues with it in the past (mainly the usb port not being soldered on properly and falling off); so I just received all my replacement cords for it and ran it, it took *forever* for it to load up, which I felt was understandable seeing as there's like 200+ GB on it but when I go to like drag one item from it, it'll take more than 10 minutes and if I cancel it, it just loads.. and loads and loads; I don't know what it's doing but when it's like that, I can't do anything with it and to actually make it browse-able again, I have to force a shut down. (hold the power button)

And the files I am trying to move are just 2.5MB so they shouldn't even be taking this long..

I have quite a few files I wish to save otherwise I'd just format the whole thing but I can't when it just hangs onto the loading.

Is there a way for me to save these files?
I tried to upload them a hosting but it freezes when I do; same with dragging the images into windows paint.

Please help!

I just tried to upload some of the pictures to mediafire and it literally froze my web browser.

Hi
Windows XP PC is extremely sluggish and makes a loud whirring noise, so bought a Seagate external hard drive. I inadvertantly moved the "my documents" folder on to it and now cannot open the folder without the hard drive plugged in. how do I move it back to its original home? It hasn't exactly stopped the extremely slow way the PC opens any file or even surfing the net. Please help!

Answer:Solved: accidentally moved "my documents" folder to external hard drive

Restore the My Documents Folder to Its Default Location
To restore the My Documents folder to its default location, follow these steps:
Click Start, and then point to My Documents.
Right-click My Documents, and then click Properties.
Click Restore Default, and then click OK.
In the Move Documents box, click Yes to move your documents to the new location, or click No to leave your documents in the original location.
Let me know if that works.

My 1TB Western Digital External hard disc is not working. My laptop switched off suddenly while copying files. After restarted my laptop, when I try to open my External hard disc drive(G: \) I'm getting the message as

"Location is not available

G:\ is not accessible
The drive cannot find the sector requested"

The Properties of the drive shows as
Type: Local Disk
File system:
Used space : 0 bytes
Free space : 0 bytes

when clicking My computer->Manage->Disk Management(under Storage in left side), I can able to see my External hard disc drive(G: \). The File System shows as "RAW" before it was NTFS, % Free as 100% but I got around 1TB data. Also I checked in different laptops but it shows the same error.

And finally I checked with "Data Lifeguard Diagnostic for Windows", it passed the test.

I'm so afraid about my datas stored in the hard disc. All my projects, photos and many important files stored in that hard disc. I dont know what the problem is. I cant find any solutions in Internet. Please help me to solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

Hey Allen. I would call Western Digital support and see what they say.Since you have data on it you need, I wouldn't play around with it, get some answers from the drive makers, and as is always said, have important data backed up in at least 2 different places, with at least one being to CD/DVD.

Hello. I currently own an Alienware m17xR2 laptop & I would like to know how I can merge my hard drives so I can use them as one and have 500GB instead of only 250GB.

At the moment my maximum HD space is 250GB and that is OS(C) but there is also another HD displaying which is Local Disk (Q) but I cannot access it.

This is the hard drive that is in the laptop: 250GB (2x250GB) Free Fall Sensor Raid 1 "Mirror"(7200RPM) Dual HDD. It is currently "Mirrored" which I think means that the second hard drive is mimicking the first.

Is there anyway I can merge the hard drives so I can use the space on both of them as one HD?

Edit: The second HD also does not seem to have a partition because I cannot see it on 3rd Party Programmes & when I insert my Windows 7 CD the partition is not on the install menu either.

Thanks.

Hi everyone, my situation was expressed earlier and now that Western Digital Support (a guy named Danny, that had a very thick accent and supervisor w/ even thicker) has $14.95 of my dollars. I need help!

BRIEFING: Western Digital External Drive can't access, found I'm not the only one. Forum suggested an adapter, but that was for laptops. Did research, sucks to be me is basicaly what I found.
So, I read a hint of making an External's HD into internal hard drive, and placing it in your PC.

<There are many tutorials here and the www to learn how to install, so I won't bother any of you with that.>

QUESTION: The Hard Drive I wish to install is from an external case, it has very important data on it and if I put it into my PC, will I lose the data or can I just browse it like before?

Answer:Solved: Installing "EXTERNAL'S" Hard Drive...?

providing that the drive itself isn't the part that is bad, then you should be able to acces it as an internal the way you do other drives. This of course depends on the drive itself and your interface. If it is an IDE Drive you would need an open IDE connector in your computer. If Sata then you would need an open sata connection. That being said, you should not lose any data installing it as an internal.

My Win7 computer fails to create a System Image to my new Samsung M3 500GB external hard drive which is connected via a USB3.0 cable to a USB3.0 port on my computer. My PC reports that "The backup failed" and "The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)". My system has 8GB RAM and the Samsung external drive (NTFS file system) is recognised by the PC and I can manually read & write from/to it so it is working fine. I believe one cause can be an Nvidia USB EHCI chipset but my PC does not have this chipset. It is an Intel chipset. Microsoft support pages http://support.microsoft.com/kb/979281 and 976972 are not applicable to my problem. Any suggestions as to how I can copy a System Image to my external hard drive via USB 3.0 cable? Could it be that I need an external drive which uses an ATA cable interface? If so then I have wasted £48 on the Samsung USB device.

I have an external drive (2Tb, Toshiba, USB3) which I wiped (formatted and created new volume on). I run Win7Pro64. A few days ago, I installed a game on my external hard drive. At the time, the hard drive was assigned the "F:" directory. They other day, I plugged a video camera into my computer before the external hard drive making the camera "F:" and the hard drive "G:".

The game won't work while the hard drive is assigned to "G:". I've removed the camera, there are no other USB devices plugged in (except my mouse which doesn't have any storage capacity) but still when I plug in the hard drive, it goes back to "G:".

I've tried plugging it into different sockets, logging off the computer, restarting the computer, but still, it goes back to "G:".

Why is this happening and how can I get it back to "F:"?

Thanks.

I'll do the best I can to explain this.
I have a 2TB seagate external harddrive. It was showing no signs of problems, worked like a charm. Then, I plugged it into a Mac (usually use Windows) and started transferring a video file to the external.
Then, it started to freeze. Stopped transferring. Crashed.
I had no choice but to remove my external hard drive without ejecting, as everything was locked up.
Then, I plugged the external back into my PC. It showed up fine, but it shows as "E:/Local Drive" when before it was "E:/Seagate" or something to that effect. And, it's completely empty (2TB of free space). Before, I had about 800GB of data. And, the really weird thing is that it is showing up as a FAT32 drive, when it was NTFS before! It almost seems like the Mac purposefully formatted my drive, but that makes absolutely. no. sense.
Then, I ran Recuva (file recovery program) and it started finding all of my old files. Great, right!?
Well, maybe. The issue is that it says it's going to take about 3 days to complete the scan, which is an issue as I have to take my laptop to work. And, I don't have another hard drive big enough to recover the files to. Yes, I can solve this by buying a new 2TB HD, and I will.
But, given how weird this situation is, and given that the files are still "there," I'm thinking something really weird happened, and maybe can be fixed without an arduous file-recovery?
Is it a partition table or something? Is it possible that everything is there, but it's n... Read more

Answer:"My Computer" doesn't see external hard drive

You need to format the drive before you can use it.
Go to start> run and type diskmgmt.msc and hit enter.
Right click on the drive and create an extended partition in the unallocated space.
Now create a logical drive in the new partition and format with ntfs.
Once completed you can use the drive

Hi...

It has been awhile since I have been here. I anticipate (or at least hope) that this visit won't be as chaotic.

I recently switched back to Windows 7 from Vista a few weeks ago. I am running 32-bit Ultimate on an HP Pavillion laptop that has an AMD X2 64-bit chipset. It is running from one of two partitions on the laptop hard drive (the other partition is used to boot into Linux).

Additionally, I have 2 external drives. Each of these drives has two partitions. One of these drives is a 1TB backup drive that was recently added (the two partitions on this drive are for purposes of allocating half for use by Linux and half for use by Windows). The other external drive (which happens to be the former 2.5" hard drive of the laptop in a case providing USB connection) has two partitions, both of these were/are for use by Windows, however, one partition has an NTFS filesystem, and the other, so as to avoid irritations like the one I discuss herein, was FAT32.

I did a clean re-install of WIN7 (and Linux) about 3 days ago since my MBR was a little complicated and the reinstall was done to reorder the partitions thereby (hopefully) cutting down on fragmentation/drive use.

Anyway, today, for no real explainable reason, the NTFS partition of the older 2.5" external drive became inaccessible to me. Since I have encountered this issue in all post-NT versions of Windows when doing re-installations (i.e., the new installation of Windows does not recognize the external ... Read more

My laptop stopped booting (You can read about it here:
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/713951-autochk-error-c0000218-bsod-recovery.html )
I've reached a dead end on on trying to restore the OS, so I took the hard drive out of my Gateway Laptop which was running Windows XP Media Center Edition and placed in an external enclosure so I can access it via USB from a computer that will boot.
I booted another notebook running XP Home into safemode so I could take ownership of the Administrator folder in Documents and Settings via the security tab (as described in this Microsoft Help and Support article here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308421)
Now I can see the documents in the Administrator profile, but I can not access or copy them. Also, when I open My Music I can see all the folders for individual artists, but when I try to open the folder I get the "Access Denied" message that I got before I took ownership of the Administrator folder. What's worse, I can't use the security tab to take ownership of those files and folders in My Documents because everything is greyed out.

Help?

Answer:"Access Denied" on *now* external hard drive

Sounds like you may have taken ownership of the folders, but not the contents of the folders or subfolders. Go back to the ownership page and be sure to check the box about all child objects. Being grayed out means that that file's permissions are inherited from a superfolder, so you need to change them there.

I have recently re-installed Windows XP which consequently reformat my hard disk. When I plug in my external hard disk USB (which was working fine prior formatting the PC), it does not shows up in 'My Computer'.

When checking Device Manager, the device is working properly. I have verified on Disk Management, the external hard disk is there but with no Drive letters and paths, it mention "unallocated". It does not allow me to give it a drive letter.

During the re-installation on Windows, the external HD was connected to My PC.

The external HD is an Apollo 2.5" portable hard drive 250GB.

I have been using a 500gb Buffalo Drivestation external hard drive to store videos and music for the past several months without incident. However, two days ago when I tried to access the drive in Windows Explorer, the program appeared to freeze. This happened repeatedly, including following system reboots and unplugging/plugging in the hard drive.

When I finally allowed Windows Explorer to 'do it's thing' without ending the process, it informed me that "the file or folder is corrupted or unreadable." If at all possible, I would like a solution to this problem that will allow me to access the data that is on the hard drive at least long enough to copy it to another disk. Although most of the data is backed up, there is some that is not.

In Disk Manager, the drive appears as usual. However, when I tried to run chkdsk I received a message saying that "The root folder on this volume is full". I know for a fact that there is over 200gb of free space on the drive. Chkdsk also said "Error writing folder".

Also, I have tried accessing the drive in another computer - with the same result.

Any help you could give would be much appreciated. Thanks very much!

Answer:External hard drive "corrupted or unreadable"

As an additional point... Disk Management says that the file system on the external hard drive is RAW, while Checkdisk recognises it as FAT32.

Hi,

I am not sure whether I should be posting this in the Windows forum or the PC Hardware because it involves both.

I have an external 320 GB Transcend Drive with a lot of important data.
Recently, I unplugged it from my PC and took to another to get some files.
One the other machine (Vista), it didn't show up as far as I can remember, thought that was strange so i brought it back to my Laptop (Win 7, Dual Boot with Ubuntu 10) and it only showed as Local Disk, I have tried to find useful information on the net but some is very vague and some is outright stupid and irrelevant.

The fact is that the HDD is not broken. When in Ubuntu I can view the contents fine and everything is there, no freeze ups or anything, but in windows the drive shows up as Local Disk, I don't think it is a drive letter conflict.

The Device shows up fine in the Device Manager.
I'm sure some of you have solved this problem as it seems many on the Internet have.
If so please tell me in a few steps how you resolved it.. I am not formatting as I do not deem this necessary since I can access my data fine in Ubuntu.

Kind Regards

Answer:External Hard Drive Works In Ubuntu / Shows as "Local Disk" in Win 7 and doesn't work

I suggest that while in Ubuntu you move the files to local HDD, then reformat external HDD, then copy the files back.

My external Seagate drive is apparently "dirty" and windows automatically checks it every time i boot up with it attached to the usb port. It is actually pretty annoying. The only way around it that I found is actually unplugging it before I boot up and plugging it back in after windows starts.

Every time the check says there are no issues. The drive works fine and I am able to use the drive as if nothing is wrong.

Does anyone know whow to get rid of the check during Windows startup? How can I make my drive "clean" again? Thanks

EDIT: I have Windows XP sp3 btw

Answer:External hard drive is "dirty" and windows runs a check every time computer boots up

You may need to run a manual chkdsk /f to clear it. Try this
> Unplug the drive then boot up then plug it back in. Determine its drive letter
> Start->Run, enter cmd to open a command prompt
> Enter chkdsk x: /f (except use the correct drive letter, not x)

/f option may take loong time complete (especially if large hard drive.. i.e hours) but when it's done i believe it should clear the dirty bit for you

hey, yesterday i noticed that when i plugged my external hard drive, it didnt work and the computer said it didnt have format, also i had problems with msn messegner which i fixed by renaming some file i cant remember. then i also noticed that when i selected "show hidden files" these weren't displayed. and finally when i tried to access my local drive i got a blue screen and reboot, same thing happened last time i could open my external drive.
i tried the external drive in 3 other coputers and it worked fine.
i found some strage files like "p.exe", "olhrwef", "cv8j", "autorun.inf","dnsflush.cws" and "win32.rungbu.a" the last 2 were detected by spybot.

after i ran the Xp cleaning procedure the hidden files were hidden, i didnt get any blue screens, but the computer still gives me the same problem with external drives and pendrives. here are the logs

also my external drive got infected, but when i plugged it into another computer, i scanned and cleaned it with eset smart security 4, which did the job, but didnt work on my local drive.

I'm not sure if this is a coincident but I just recently reformatted the hardrives of my main comp. I backed up a lot of data and programs onto my Maxtor 5000XT 250GBUSB drive.
I can watch movies and play mp3's from the drive but I can't consistetly move files from the 5000XT to other drives on my system.
Sometimes a small file will move with no problem other times a 3MB file may say that it will take 10minutes to xfer and it the xfer fails.
I ran CHKDSK with the following command:
chkdsk /f /r G:

CHKDSK says that it will do a five step process. After step three says 100%, I get the following message:
unable to read the security diescriptors data stream

I don't think this is a good message.

So then i try to do a defrag. The defrag prog says that it can't run becaus chkdisk is scheduled. I check the system schedule and there is no indication that chkdsk is waiting to run. The defrag prog. also says that CHKDSK will run after I reboot. I reboot several times and CHKDSK never runs.
I wouldn't be so upset except that I have been using this removable drive as my back-up storage and no I cant reload stuff back to fresh clean main comp.
I have two questions:
1. Is my drive toast?
2. If it isn't, what can I do to fix the problem

Thanks in advance,

VC

Answer:Any External Hard drive shows " Location is not Available, F:/ is Not Accessible, Access is Denied", this Error is shown all USB ports.

Hi Vincent,
Thanks for your input.
My problem has been solved.
1 chap from another forum suggested it may have been a fault with my AntiVirus.
He made me check the client policy for USB Auto On/Off for external drive scanning.
he suggested me some changes, & now all my usb external drives work... :)
Yayyy..!!!
Thanks all of you.
Regards.

(P.s.: hope the problem does not pop-up again...)
