Unable to read DVD Rom on Windows 7

Question: Unable to read DVD Rom on Windows 7

Problem:
My DVD Rom is listed on My computer but it is not able to read or write. This was working properly at the purchase of the notebook but stopped working perhaps during or after the installation of some software.

System:
Windows 7 Home Premium, 64 bit, Service Pack 1, Gateway NV57H Model
DVD Rom: Pioneer DVD-RW DVRTD10rs

I have observed:
1. There is NO yellow symbol next to DVD/CD-ROM drives in Device manager.
2. Under DVD ROM properties in device manaer, Devise Status says,
---
This device is working properly.
Windows did not start a related device driver. To learn more, click the Driver tab and then click Driver Details.
---

3. Under driver details for this drive is listed 4 drivers as follows:
1...system32\DRIVERS\cdrom.sys
2...system32\drivers\NTIDrvr.sys
3...system32\Drivers\PxHlpa64.sys
4...system32\drivers\UBHelper.sys

Steps taken:
I have used Microsoft's Fix it tool
http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems/en-us
It says under issues found: Media in CD/DVD Rom is not readable (The drive is empty or the media format is not supported)

I have also tried deleting upper/lower registry in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE...{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} as suggested in some forums.

I have also tried disabling cdrom.sys driver and restarting the notebook which seems to reinstall cdrom.sys driver upon restart but problem persists.

Regardless of all attempts it still is unable to read or write to dvd rom. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Some of the programs i have tried installing prior to occurrence of this problem are Adobe After Effects, Adobe Primier and Adobe Photoshop.

Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Unable to read DVD Rom on Windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Unable to read DVD Rom on Windows 7

Greetings, masipay, and welcome to MajorGeeks...

Looks like you've tried most of the normal first troubleshooting steps. Couple of quickies:

1. Is the drive listed by your BIOS? If so, does everything look kosher there?

2. Do you have a bootable disk, such as a Windows disk, Linux, recovery, etc.? If so, you might try setting your boot order in BIOS to 'CD/DVD first' and boot to that disk. If the boot is successful, then we can guess that some 3rd-party program might be causing the problem. This also leads to my next suggestion:

3. Any symptoms change when Windows is booted to Safe Mode?

I have just recently reformatted my computer and installed Windows XP. However, after installing, Windows couldn't read my ethernet port, audio port, and the mass storage port. My previous reinstallations never had such problems. All the parts listed are all part of the motherboard and cannot be removed and reattached. What should I do?

Answer:Windows unable to read three parts

try to reinstall the motherboard drivers or the chipset drivers.

I put a new system together for my son:

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA78LM-S2H
Processor: AMDAthlon X2 5000+
Memory: 2GB Crucial DDR2 800
Onboard video
IDE Hard Drive
IDE HP DVD writer
Windows xp Home

I was able to install windows without any problems. I then went to install the MB drivers. I put the cd in the drive and let it autorun. It opened as a music cd and the only file on the cd was a small cda file. Ok I though I must have gotten a bad cd. I went to gigabytes website and downloaded the latest drivers and burned them to cd on another pc. I bring that cd to the new build and same thing. The files show up as a small cda file. I bring the cd back to 2 other pcs and they both are able to read the cd and see the driver files. I then place the windows xp cd in the drive on the new build and it is also read as a small cda file. I then reboot the new build pc and boot from the windows xp cd and it reads the disc fine. So the dvd drive works fine and the media is fine. What is wrong with my windows installation????

I have tried mr fixit but it did not work. I have looked for the upper and lower filters in the registry and they did not exist. Does anyone have any ideas?

A friend just bought a new eMachines PC, with XP Home, to replace a 9 year old Windows 98 PC.  He asked me to transfer his files from the old to the new PC.  I removed the old 10 gb HD, which has a 1999 date stamp, put it in an external drive enclosure, and was unable to read the drive.  I could see the drive in Windows Management console, but it does not show up in the "My Computer" drive listing.  I tried to read the drive with Acronis Tru-Image ll, but got a report that the drive is a "not supported" drive.  I then installed the old drive as a slave in one of my machines, with exactly the same results as above.I assume the drive is missing certain features which are now required.  Do any of you hardware types out there have any suggestions?  The old PC has a CD writer, and that's about the only route I can think of now to extract data from this old, but completely operational, hard drive.

Answer:Unable to Read 9 yr old Hard Drive from Windows 98 PC

You might take a browse thru an old thread of mine on this type of subject - in case it gives you some other ideas. ....http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php?topic=60714Out of all my previous HDDs I have problems with two most recent (a drive letter problem) - and also I have two real old ones going back to my DX4-66 days, which was back in mid 90s - they won't come up at all.  Many others however are accessible thru an external enclosure.Certainly if CD burning is an option then at least that could be one route to rescue important data.

My system restore isn't working. I installed a software called PC Health Advisor. After I installed the software and it repaired the errors, my Windows Laptop screen is not gibberish. From the desktop icon descriptions, taskbar and any windows that I open - all of the information is in random symbols. I have tried to do a system restore, but it still doesn't work. I have done a "Last Known Good Configuration". Still garbage on the screen. I did a system repair with "sfc /scannow"; it found some corrupted files, but still have the same problem. Any suggestions? Please help.

I recently bought windows 7 home premium upgrade to upgrade my XP machine, but the computer will not read the disc. When putting in the disc all I see on it is a single text file with "This disc contains a "UDF" file system and requires an operating system that supports the ISO-13346 "UDF" file system specification." I have tried 2 Different drives including an external which has loaded windows 7 discs just fine in the past. I have tried both the 32 bit and 64 bit discs. The XP machine has SP3 and says that it is completely up to date. The disc came still wrapped in its packaging from staples. Anyone have any ideas??

Answer:Solved: Unable to read Windows 7 disc

If that's the case, then this is probably the cause> Usually comes when someone is trying to open an .ISO file to run, but can also happen with a DVD disk.....

http://www.sharkyforums.com/showthread.php?t=283832

http://forums.techarena.in/vista-help/541405.htm
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/vssetup/thread/3995833f-196f-4f8b-b57f-f8a7756559b1

Basically, it could be that the disk was made with some newer type of software that your drive cannot handle.

Maybe your DVD software needs Updates, especially if you have reinstalled the operating system and programs but not yet updated.....Nero, Roxio, etc have Updates you can add to the program, for free, you may have to make a simple account at their website.

Or........if nothing works,

Can you return that DVD and buy a different one somplace else?

I've been using Outlook Express for years, however it will no longer accept new email accounts so I moved to Windows Live Mail. Loved it to bits, easy, fast, friendly. Everything I wanted. Then the first Microsoft windows update came down and I could no longer read my email. Sure it still came down all right and I could read the titles but no content, just empty emails, even those I'd read before. So I uninstalled Live mail and went back to Outlook Express. Still not happy so I reinstalled Live Mail again. I could read the messages once more! Until... The next update from Microsoft arrived and here we go again. Headers only, no content. If I go to hotmail via IE7 I can read them OK but in Live Mail the emails are empty.Any Ideas?

One fine day it stopped reading the card and since then I have not been able to read the card transfer any files or pictures. I have formatted my Lenovo laptop and have reinstalled windows and its drivers from the Lenovo support site which obviously didn?t help. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Hi guys, I would really appreciate any help on the following. I had a machine which only hard drive (running Win. XP Pro. SP2) was labled as "E". I changed this to "C" using Partition Magic 8, now when I try and boot the system I get the following error:

partitionmagic (xmnt2002.exe)

PartitionMagic is unable to read the batch file.

Verifiy that the system32 directory is not compressed or corrupt.

press any key to continue.

Once I press any key it says it's completed and then just hangs, I don't get to the Windows log on screen I have tried several things but got no where. I have a copy of Bart PC so can boot using this and edit the registry if need be but have had no success in what I have tried.

Thanks for reading this and if you think you can help please do, really appreciated! I have limited time to sort this as I leave this wkend

Answer:PartitionMagic is unable to read the batch file - Cannot log into Windows :(

The basic issue is that you can't simply change the drive letter of a bootable Windows installation. If you created the recovery disk for PM, use that to restore the changes you made.

I have a Lenovo B575 and my Card Reader stopped working as well. I fixed it by downloading an updated Win 10 driver directly from Realtek; however, I would check for an updated Lenovo driver first (which you may already have done).

good luck,

Yes, this one exists in the 10525 here too.
I'm afraid only MS will fix this. The file is in use, and then falsely Windows tries to write into System32, which doesn't have the permission (there was a thread about this somewhere). Apparently MS only fixed half of the problem.
Best report this to Microsoft directly (Feedback) if you are an Insider.
If the report is that the file is in use, you can check via Process Handler in Process Explorer by which file. It will show you where the handle is open. For me, it was Cortana, which I am not touching. I had my share of problems with Cortana, and ended up repairing windows.
It doesn't break anything else here though, so I simply ignore it.

Answer:SettingSyncHost (7996) Unable to read the header of logfile C:\WINDOWS

Apparently turning off "Sync your settings" will stop the issue for now.

I have an external drive that was formatted FAT32 which I have been using with my XP laptop for the past year. I have data on it that I want to transfer to my Windows 7 laptop. However, as soon as I connect it to my Windows 7 laptop, it comes up with a message saying "You need to format the disk before you can use it. Do you want to format it?" I assumed that Windows 7 was unable to read the drive because it was FAT32, so I connected it back to my XP laptop and ran the conversion: CONVERT E: /FS:NTFS - The conversion completed successfully and I connected the drive back to my Windows 7 laptop. But it still came up with the same message that the drive needs to be formatted. Does anyone know what the problem could be?

Answer:Windows 7 unable to read external drive formatted FAT32

What I would do, is format the drive using Windows 7 then copy the files with your XP then copy them over to your 7. Windows 7 uses NTFS system while XP can use both so if the drive is formatted with 7 then XP can backwards convert it. Windows 7 kinda sucks when it comes to accessing drives. I don't know why they did that but oh well.....

Ok so here is the deal. I have a brand new FreeNAS 8 box that I just built. I have gone through and created my volume, assigned the owner as a user I created, created a NFS share, enabled the NFS service, and mounted the NFS share on my Windows Server 2008 R2 box. It mounted and I was able to create a new folder, however when I attempt to transfer files into that folder I get an error that all or part of the file may be locked by windows and therefore is unable to copy at this time. I tried right clicking and making a new shortcut in the folder and got the same error. I thought it may be the server that was the issue so I installed the NFS client on a windows 7 machine, and mounted the volume and got the same error. I restarted the win 7 machine thinking maybe there was some issue with the fresh install of NFS and still got the same error.

I know I missed something but any help is appreciated.

Answer:NFS and Windows Server 2008 R2, able to mount and read shares, unable to write.

I don't have any experience with FreeNAS, however I'd look at the permissions of the new directory from the command line on the FreeNAS device. It is probably the UID or GID mappings not being correct. Here's a link to the MS KB about how to work with the permissions from Services for Unix client. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324546

Hope that helps.

I hope you can help. To try to cut a long story short, pc was working fine, then started to crash (like flicking a switch). Notices appeared (blue screen) indicating lack of memory. I tried to reinstall Windows Vista Ultimate 64 bit - but the installation kept crashing. Before this I backed up my work and cleared everything from the hard drive. After repeated attempts DOS black screen notices then appeared saying that the boot manager is missing. I have installed some new ram. 2GB RAM only (just for now) as I am using an OEM version of Windows. Still having this problem. Not getting the 'press any key' prompt to set up Windows. Managing to get into the default BIOS. Any help would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Answer:boot manager missing unable to read windows - no operating system

Managed to get the computer to read my CD/DVD drive by going into the BIOS on booting up (by pressing the Delete key [DEL]). Went through the BIOS menu using the arrow keys on my keyboard, selected the Boot Device Facility and prioritized the CD/DVD I wished to use. Then I made sure that I was satisfied with the changes I had made. Save and Exit. Upon restart the computer automatically read my Windows CD. It is in the process now of reinstalling Windows. Touch wood.Just a quick note: Once Windows has been successfully installed I will have to change the booting up sequence to the HARD drive or else I will always be booting up from the CD.

We received a bunch of new computers (T570's, T470's, M710q's). They all have Windows 7 but we purchased Windows 10 Upgrades for them. The support site doesn't recognize any of their serial numbers. Does anyone know how to upgrade to Windows 10 quickly on these? I assume this is because their site needs to be updated to recognize the new Serial Numbers? It's killing us being unable to deploy these. Thanks,

Answer:Support Site Can't Read Serial Number - Unable to Download Windows 10 Upgrade

I could be wrong, but it is my understanding is that if you purchased the upgrade when you ordered the system, the Windows 10 product key should already be embedded in the BIOS even if the system shipped with Windows 7, so you should be able to just create Windows 10 Installation media for the version of Windows you purchased, a then use it to perform the upgrade.     If asks for a product key during the upgrade, just skip that step and it should activate upon completion. If you are trying to order the recovery media from lenovo, I would probably call Lenovo support if the serial number is not being recognized.    Windows 10 Upgrade Guidehttps://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/ht103822 Create installation media for Windowshttps://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/15088/windows-create-installation-media    Cheers,

I can't seem to change the attributes on my hard drive, and everything seems to be marked Read Only.  I've tried changing the attributes, and it goes through the process, but then when I check the attributes again, they've reverted back to Read Only.
I am the only user of this PC, and it has me as an administrator, but there are still functions that I should be able to do, and folders that I should have access to, but it says Access denied.  How do I fix this??  I can't even install updates to

This trojan unlike any Ive seen before. Safe mode will run and show the desktop for about a minute or so and then abrubtly shut itself down. So this is the time frame im allowed in safe mode...thus you see my problem. Ive tried a few other tricks with no avail. I can get the command prompt up but rstrui.exe wont execute...any suggestions guys? I really dont want to fresh install.

A customer gave me a CD which she claims she was able to read on a previous PC. We've since upgraded her to a new laptop (Compaq -WinXP home) with a CD/DVD combo and now she cannot read it.

The original laptop was an IBM Thinkpad... it crapped out so I can't verify if it could be read.
When inserted in a drive it appears to repeatedly spin-up/shutdown... then long time before a message says "Drive empty insert disk".

Action so far:
1) Tried reading in various PC's with various CD-Rom Drives and operating systems - even Win95, Win98
How do I determine if it is actually defective.

Question: Unable to read CD

I am unable to open a CD I created on my old PC. Not sure why...

It was created with HP software read only and I think can be read through a specific drive only. Had two cd drives on my old PC - new one has one.

It has 34 files on it as I scanned it with ant-virus. Can't format it OR open as it's read only and not compatible with my recording software.

Free space 0 bytes
Total size 0 bytes.

Am I going to have to wait until the new software arrives for the other CD writer until I can access it? Is the CD damaged?

Thanks

No the cd is fine try putting it in the old computer and use acrobat reader to make the cd closed but viewable on other computers.

Question: Unable to Read DVD

I have a DVD that the PC DVD drive (3 different PCs with Win 7 installed) fails to recognise its presence in the drive. The player gives a low level thump, waits 2-3 seconds, repeats the cycle continuously. I ejected the medium to stop the thumps after 2-3 minutes. Question: Unable to read SSD

So I turned my computer off last night, everything was working fine. Then when I woke up today, I turned it on and BAM, could no longer read my SSD (Vertex 2) and would get a message telling me to insert my windows install disk.

So I decided to humour it, and tried putting the disk in, checked the recovery options and was unable to find the SSD to perform recovery on. I carried on a few more steps to install a fresh copy and it wasn't listed there either.

I spent about a hour fiddling around with the hardware, swapping around wires and harddrives to check if it was the wires messing me about, turns out everything worked fine.

I then reset my BIOS and then checked the boot settings, but my SSD wasn't even displayed on the list.

So I was stumped.

On the POST screen, when the SSD was not plugged in, nothing would show up in that slot, however when the SSD is plugged in it says 'None'

(SSD currently plugged into C1 Master)

This problem has been bugging me all day, and I was hoping someone might know what it going on ?

Regards,
MatthewH

Answer:Unable to read SSD

Have you tried to plug the SSD into another SATA slot on your board? If that dosen't work, try and connect a spare Hard Drive to the cable your SSD is currently connected to - just to rule out whether it's actually the SSD or a problem with a SATA port on the motherboard.

Answer:Unable to read DVD-CD

Hello -
A few basics first - If you check Device Manager, is there any ( ? ) or ( ! ) showing near your Optical Device ?
When was the last time that you could read these DVDs, and was it on this, or another computer ?

Please list Computer Make and Model (if known) and Optical Device also. It should be listed in Device Manager.
You could try to put it in another computer as a test, or look for updated firmware for the Optical Drive.

Thank You -

I have a lenovo thinkpad r61 8933 with a DVD Multiwriter disc. Earlier it used to read dual layer DVDs but off late I have ended up wasting money on PCQuest discs which have been dual layer discs. At first I thought it was a one-off case but now I'm 5 discs down. If it is a software problem could you point me to the required download or hardware diagnostic tool I need to use? PC Doctor is not useful in this case so please advise something different. Thanks for thinking.

Hello Everyone,

I have two Windows 98 machines and one XP machine that are all experiencing the same issue. None of them will read cd's of any type.

Regarding the Win98 machines, I am wondering if the startup disk will resolve the issue? Is there a way that I can reinstal the cd drivers without reformatting my hard drives?

Regarding the XP machine, the McAfee Security Center recognized a program as a trojan and quarantined the program. In my haste, I deleted the program. Since that day the cd will not read any cd. McAfee has not been any help with this issue. Is there a way to reinstall the cd drivers for the XP machine?

As always, thanks in advance for any assistance you can offer in this matter.

I recently use a recovery disc to restore my computer back to factory settings. The first time I turned my computer one, I recieved some sort of notice asking me if I wanted to disable my CD/RW capability in order to have DVD-R capabilities? I can't quite remember. Anyway, after all was said an done, I put in a CD to the the CD drive and it was not readable. After running my computer for a little bit longer, some of the CDs that worked eariler, no longer worked. I've been able to rip about half of my CDs onto my computer, and the other half go undetected (all my CDs are store bought, none are burned) . My DVD playback was really choppy too.

Things I've done to try and fix this have consisted of:
1. Uninstalling my D: Drive.
2. Uninstalling my IDE channels
3. Running the recovery disc again
4. Making sure all drivers were up to date
5. I've put the discs into another computer to make sure that it wasn't the discs.
6. I completed all the windows updates recommended.
7. Went into the properties of my CD/DVD drive and "Enable CD recording on this device."

Are there any other alternatives to get my CD/DVD drive back to 100% functioning? This could be a hardware problem, but considering it worked fine until the recovery makes me sceptical.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I backed up several folders of family photos onto a CD-R (memorex). I used it once to copy some of the pictures to another PC (Acer) for editing. When I put it back in the original PC, it would not read. When I put the CD back in the Acer pc, It brought up the audio station program and tried to play music off the CD. Can anyone tell me what happened to the CD? Are the files still there and can I get to them? Thanks. I have a Compaq Presario SR1020nx, with a 2.80 ghz Intel Celeron processor, 1024 mb ram, 80 gb Ultra DMA hard Drive, running Windows XP home edition SP2 (yeah, this is the same POS that crashed on me in December)

Answer:Unable to read a burned CD

I'm asuming you used NERO or such. Depends how you burned the cd, meaning as in bootable dics, files, mp3's and such.
There isn't a great deal you can do but try and have it opened on some other pc. Ignore the pop up with Media Player or whatever comes on and just find it.
1. My computer
2. Directory of a cd (CD-RW) for example
If you do menage do get your files back somehow, in the futer remember to either use a different cd for mp3's, photos etc. Check also if you did burn anything at all sounds silly but it happens and always i repeat always burn at the slowest speed possible, at least half of the native speed.

Hi everybody,
I have a HP Computer with Windows XP OS. Computer is unable to recognize any CD inserted into the E drive. Once, the CD is inserted, it keeps showing a message "Please insert a disk into E drive", even though it is already inserted.
Is it possibly the dust, so that I will only have to use a CD cleaner? Or, could the E driver (hardware) be kaput?

Thanks,

Hi.
Having not long got back from a lovely 10 day braek on the sunny east coast of Spain, shortly after returning home, found that two of my 3 SD Cards were not being read by my computer.
I then tried using a second, & a3rd computer,& found the same problem occuring. I have used a stand alone card reader, & also a card slot on 2 of the three machines...to no avail!!
The camera i was using was a Fuji Finepix S4000,& all cards were formatted on this camera, prior to the holiday. Now, this is the interesting bit...all 3 cards can be viewed on the camera.
My problem is this, some of those pictures that i cannot download at present, have been promised to friends abroad.
It really would be appreciated, to learn how to recover those 'temporally lost images'. I know a little about computers, but not enough as i wou;ld like. It is through forums like this,& helpful tips & advice, that i learn.
Any help in this matter, would, as mentioned before, be greatly appreciated.
Many Thanks in advance for raeding this, & hope to hear from you soon.
Yours Sincerely

Answer:sd cards unable to be read....

Most digital cameras will have a lead that can be plugged into a port on the camera with the other USB end plugged into the PC. If the camera is recognised this way then you should be able to see its contents in My Computer. Most times the pictures are in a sub folder of a folder named DCIM, if you can see the pictures in a folder you can then drag and drop them into My Pictures.

Hello. I'm in desperate need of computer help. I think on sunday the 25th we got a virus. Since then I've had countless Trojans and today finally found what my PC-Cillin said was the virus. It was in C:WINDOWS\mgrs.exe and installed it self on 11/25/07.
I finally got the file deleted but I'm still having my pages hijacked and when I tried to download the programs in the Run and Read Me First thread, the page gets hijacked. It is like the stupid thing KNOWS I'm trying to get rid of it. Normally it redirects me to dnsserror or s2fnew. If it makes a difference, the only way I was able to get rid of the infected file was to restart in Safe Mode and delete that way. I am running Windows XP on a Dell Dimension B110
I have run the PC-Cillin with my ethernet disconnected. Any help would be much appreciated as I've been told that I need to wipe my harddrive clean and reinstall everything. Thank you in advance for any help that you can give.

Answer:Unable to perfrom Run & Read Me First...

Welcome to Major Geeks!

It is rarely necessary to reinstall. It sometimes just takes a little creativity to figure out how to get around blocking issues. With that in mind, try the below types of ideas to help you get us some logs requested in the READ & RUN ME

try downloading using a differnet browser if you have another installed
try downloading in safe mode
try downloading tools to another PC and then copy them to the problem PC using a CD, a flashdrive,.....etc
If you could at a minimum, just get the MGtools.exe file onto your problem PC and run it per the instructions and then attach the MGlogs.zip file. This would help us get started.

C:WINDOWS\mgrs.exe has nothing to do with PC Cillin so I'm not sure why you say PC Cillin was the virus.

What might cause a computer to be unable to read the Diagnostic Resource CD that came with it nor another one that Dell sent to try. I recently did a complete reformat eliminating everything on the hard drive and building it up again. I wanted to test my CD burner with the diagnostics disk but it would not load the menu. It starts reading it then when it says loading drivers, this may take a minute it stops. Just black screen with curser. Dell is confused. They said the machine is not using any software to do this and it should be able to read the CD. On my other smaller machine it reads the disk fine but my newer XPS will not load the image. No other issues with the computer at present. Formated drive fine, booted to windows CD fine, laded windows and all other programs fine, internet fine, spyware virus scans run fine nothing found. Seems odd that the only it won't do is read this resource CD. Also, with Dell's help, loaded the 32 bit diagnostics on four floppy disks and tried it with the 3,5 and nothing. Won't read the image off these either. Also tried the CD in my lower CD drive and would start but again not load image. Two different disks, no diagnostics. Dell tech said other XPS system's have read the diagnostics on the resource CD. What could possibley cause this very specific problem?

KM1

PS - Also loaded a dos program on a floppy to see if it would give me an a: prompt and this worked fine.

When I insert a cd into the disk drive I can hear it spinning and grinding but it never plays the disk & If I insert a blank disk to copy music, I get an error reading 'insert blank disk'.
Any ideas???

Answer:Unable to read disk?

Likely a bad drive. You do not state whether or not it's a CDROM or DVDROM or CD or DVD burner.

Autoplay may also be disabled, which isn't a bad thing but maybe you weren't expecting this. Simply open an explorer window to browse the CDROM. Does it read the disk or do you get an error? If so copy and paste the entire error back here.

The error you mention above isn't really clear, can you again post the exact error.

Also check the event viewer for any error messages that are logged onto the machine. Perhaps you have some problems and errors here that should be reviewed.

I tried to complete all of the steps within the READ ME FIRST.

I got all the way up to the point where I needed to run the SUPER AntiSpy. At that point, I stopped because the problem I was having occured once again.

My computer keeps freezing up. Previously I had problems with Internet Explorer - It kept shutting down and restarting. It did this many, many times and I tried to troubleshoot with their suggestions and nothing seemed to work. (I downloaded their Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner - but when I run it, my laptop freezes....so nothing ever gets accomplished)

Now, anytime I'm on my laptop, it freezes. I don't know if 'freeze' is the correct term. When I run a scan, the 'time elapsed' is still running, but nothing is actually running.

I cannot use ctrl+alt+del because it wont let the screen pop up. The laptop does nothing and I have to shut it down by pressing the power button.

When starting up, I tried to start in safe mode, but that freezes and it won't start up - I then have to use the power button once again to shut it off. Then after that, it wants me to run something to repair it.

I run the repair before start up and after the repair scan is done, it says that it could not be fixed automatically.

I seem to keep having problems with Windows and IE. I had a family member visit and ever since then, my laptop hasn't been working properly. It did show that I had a trojan and after throubleshooting that... Read more

Answer:Unable to complete the Read Me First, not sure what to do now

Welcome to Major Geeks!

Right now your problems sound more like a hardware issue (perhaps overheating or memory) than they do malware.

Have you attempted running in safe boot mode to see if it still "freezes"? If not then try it. Run scan in safe boot mode if possible. Try to run MGtools.exe as requested.

Also try running the below which is a reaonably quick scan.

Download TDSSKiller from Kaspersky to your directly onto your Desktop

Now double click the TDSSkiller.exe file to run it ( if using Vista or Windows 7 do not double click on it but rather, right click and select Run As Administrartor. )
Allow the application to run if prompted by Windows or any security programs you have installed
It will start the scan and run rather quickly and will notify you of whether anything is found or not.
Follow the instructions to delete/quarantine if asks you what to do when if finds something.
Whether an infection is found or not, a log file should be created on your C: drive ( or whatever drive you boot from) in the root folder named something like TDSSKiller.2.1.1_27.12.2009_14.17.04_log.txt which is based on the program version # and date and time run. Please attach this log to your next reply. (See: HOW TO: Attach Items To Your Post )

Anytime I put a DVD in that the reader can't read, it hangs my whole system. I can bring up Windows Task Manager, but can't kill Windows Explorer and can't shutdown my system. The only way to stop it is to hold the on/off button until the system shuts down. This is my first ThinkPad and I can't remember ever having another computer do this. Right click your optical drive go to the DLA tab Uncheck Enable DLA on your drives.See if that works. I was having the same issue when I insertted a DVD to try and install something.  I turned it off and now it's installing.  Again, as mentioned in other threads, this is not a real solution to the problem.  Just a work around.

Answer:Unable to read files

Since I don't know what library you are using, my first guess is that you are using an incompatible version of Office. For instance, you have Office 98 and the library is writing for Office 2003 files.

If the error is in your code, double check that you are catch()ing all errors and checking return values for errors.

I started a multisession data DVD with Nero and now I can't seem to finalize it.  I started it quite a while ago and I'm not sure if I was using Nero 6 or 7 (or that it matters).  When I attempt to add additional content Nero 7 prompts me to select a track (2 are displayed) to add data to, but won't actually allow me to select anything.  The only option within Nero I can find for finalization is Finalize VR, but this isn't a video, and I'm concerned I would lose the data. I've also attempted to finalize using DVD Decrypter.  When I try to finalize the disc I get an error message stating "Session Fixation Error - Incomplete track in session" and gobbledygook I/O errors if I attempt to close tracks or sessions.  My question then; does anyone know of software that will allow me to view the physical sectors on the DVD and recover the data even though Windows can't?

Hi Guys

Just upgrading to Win 10 and noticed this morning that I am unable to change the settings from Read Only to allow all saved work. I have tried changing the Preferences, but as soon as I do, Apply, Ok and the settings refer back to Read Only.

I haven't noticed this on any documents, only on Pictures. I have tried changing the directory and Pictures, but no luck.

Any non too technical solutions?

Many thanks.

I formatted my hard drive a couple of days ago, but before formatting, I copied My Documents folder to a CD. After replacing the OS (Win ME) and all the software, I tried to load the files from My Documents back-up- disk and all the yellow folders loaded but the Word documents wouldn't and I couldn't get them to open direct from the disk. I tried using Bad Copy software to retrieve the files but although I could now copy them to my hard drive, they still wouldn't open. Can anyone assist please.........Dave
Incidentally, I used Nero 6 to burn the backup disk. I've done it plenty of times before quite successfully. I have 512mb ram, pent3 700mhz processor and 2X20gb Harddrives

I have a CD game I'm playing, and there's a certain section in the game that when I go to it, an error message appears saying," unable to read 29724 bytes from (the source). wav " Then there are two buttons "continue" and "cancel". When I click either of them, the game turnes off.

How could I fix this problem?

This problem never happened before. It just suddently started.

System: Windows XP Professional.

Please Note: When I mentioned " (the source) " I meant to say the source of the disk. For Example: D:/sound/wind.

Find out the name of the manufactuer of your sound card. Go to their website and download and install the latest driver specific to your sound card. Use the Device Manager, and the Force.

I am getting an error message fairly often when trying to open attachments to my E-mail which states "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing the action. Create an association in the Folder Options Control Panel." I can't find the aforementioned control panel and if I could I wouldn't know what to do. The "help" programs herein are of no assistances since they don't list this panel either. Any suggestions?

Answer:unable to read attachments

Hi tech(once)

What file extensions do these attachments have?
What operating system and email program are you using?

Hello, I have .xls file saved both on MS Office 2003 version, and 2007 compact mode. File size is 41 MB. Recently, I've received 'Not responding' error messages and today it showed me that it's unable to read on both computers. I tried to recover it but it couldn't recover the formulas. Could all of this happen because the file is big and is there any way to recover it? And yes, backup file is damaged too :/

I have a Sony combo drive that can read DVDs and write CDs. Previously it was working perfect but now it just doesn't read DVDs. It is working perfectly as cd burner and can read disks other than DVDs. I think the problem started after i reinstalled windowsXP with SP-2 but i m not sure. Please help me out.

Answer:Unable to read DVDs

Doesn't it just read DATA DVD's or Video DVD's?
Try using it from a linux live cd, and mounting a few dvd's from there.
That might help isolating the problem.

I recently FDisk my drive and now I can't read my CD-RW disks. I get the following message " This disc contains a UDF file system and requires an OS that supports the ISO-13346 UDF file system specification." My OS is Win 98 second edition. My CD-RW software includes a UDF reader and I can locate it in the run command. I did download an Adaptec UDF reader but that didn't help. How can I access my CD-RW files???

Answer:Unable to read UDF file

If you launch the UDF program manually, does it work? Maybe you could try reinstalling your original CD-RW software?

Hi, it appears no one has an answer for me. The messages I am getting are :

The instructions at 0x62308d19 are unable to read reference memory 0x0227385c

And the add on that appears to be causing the problem is yiesrvc.dll

Can anyone tell me what I can do about this? My computer is freezing up so bad tonight I can hardly get anything done. Thanks

Answer:Re: Unable to read messages

Go to add/remove programs and see if you see Yahoo toolbar listed. If so, remove it and see if it fixes this. If it is not listed, post back.

Within the last 2 months my CD ROM drive doesn't read my disks. In 'My Computer', the drive exists (drive letter E. I'm able to press the 'open' button on the drive, opening it for me to put a CD into. When it's opening, the LED flashes on the drive.

The problem is when I have a CD in the drive, go to the drive in 'My Computer', and right-click to open the drive. I'm told to insert a CD.

How could I fix my problem so that I could read CDs again?

Answer:CD-ROM drive unable to read CDs

Boot with a boot disk w/cdrom support and go to a dos prompt. Try getting a directory on the drive there.

Hi and thank you for taking the time to help me out. The problem I'm having is with my cd/dvd-rom. Any discs I insert into my computer, even blank ones, aren't detected by my computer. I can't back up any files or play any cd's or dvd's. This happened out of nowhere, probably a while ago, but I never had the chance to get around to fixing it. After a while of not burning any cd's, I went to burn a cd one day and it wouldn't work. I tried uninstalling the drivers and restarting the computer to re-install them, but to no avail. I installed microsoft "Fix It" for it, and that didn't do squat. I don't know what I need to do to get it working again. Any help is appreciated. Thanks again.

Answer:CD/DVD-rom Unable to read *any* disc

Insert a bootable cd or dvd. Make sure the optical drive is the first device in the bios boot order. Reboot. Does the system see the bootable disc at boot? If not, you need to replace the drive. If it does, post back and we'll provide some suggestions for you.

I have a direct read CD on which I have entered and deleted files. Using it as a back up for personal files. Up until now I have accessed the CD and can read and or process files. The CD had shown 50% used with 50% available. When I accessed the CD today none of the files appeared. In properties it showed completely full. This CD is used in a program where I can use the CD in the same manner as another drive or a floppy disk. I want to know how I can acces the files that were on that CD

Answer:unable to read files on rw CD

Are you attempting to read the files on the same machine and in the same drive they were written? Are you able to read and write other CD-RWs?

I know there is something in Yahoo that it doesn't like, I think something in the ISP toolbar. As soon as I have time to figure it out, I am switching my ISP. Hi, I seem to have a problem whereby I cannot view/read data cds I have created on the same PC. My D (DVD-RAM)drive shows nothing in Explorer and when I click Properties the General tab shows both Used Space & Free Space equal to zero. This has happened on more than one cd yet when I insert a pre-recorded audio cd it works perfectly. Anyone any ideas what is wrong or how I can fix it? Any thoughts much appreciated!

Answer:Unable to read data cds

Are you usimng CD-Rs or CD R/W's ?It could be you are not burning the CD correctly, the burning circuit/laser is faulty or your burner just doesn't like the media (make of CD) you're using. Not sure why you describe the burner as DVD-RAM - it should have CD burner capabilities if you want to burn this media - most are but some aren't.
