Broadcom 802.11b/g and WPA2? Can't access my wireless connection

Question: Broadcom 802.11b/g and WPA2? Can't access my wireless connection

Hi all

Trying to get my wife's older laptop to connect to our wireless network. The laptop is a HP pavillion zv5000 running windows XP sp3. The network adapter is a Broadcom 802.11 b/g WLAN. The router is a cisco linksys WRT54G2 V1.5. The security on the network is WPA2 using TKIP+AES encryption.

I can't get it to connect to the wireless network. If I bump the security down to WEP it will connect just fine. I want to leave the security at WPA2 however. How do I fix this?

Thanks

Mike

Preferred Solution: Broadcom 802.11b/g and WPA2? Can't access my wireless connection

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Broadcom 802.11b/g and WPA2? Can't access my wireless connection

I tried using WPA (not WPA2) with TKIP and matched the settings with the laptop....no luck there either...

The Security settings for the network show WPA2 with 2 encryption options...AES only or TKIP+AES...for WPA it only has the option of TKIP....maybe it can run both at the same time or maybe that means it will recieve both with WPA2?

I have a linksys SRX wireless PCMCIA card for my laptop and it worked great with my D-Link DGL4300 when I was using WEP encryption. (not the most secure I know) I finally decided to use WPA2 and I am able to get a connection and browse the internet. However I am now constantly losing the connection and then reconnecting fine. I am in the same room as the router so signal strength is not the issue. Is this a problem with WPA or am I just experiencing an un repeatable problem?

Answer:WPA2 Wireless Connection Dropping

Try updating:
*Firmware on the router
*Drivers for your wireless NIC

Try a different channel on the wireless router, go into web admin, usually around wireless settings you'll see the channels..sometimes set to Auto..try setting it to 1 or 11.

Hello,

I currently am running a server-2012 domain environment with several Windows 7 laptops. I setup a radius server to authenticate users with Active Directory to obtain a wireless connection. On each Windows 7 laptop there is a wireless profile created using "user authentication". As it stands right now, only users that are profiled can login to the laptop. Once they are profiled and they enter a username/password, it will then attempt to connect to the network, then obtain an IP address if everything is entered correctly.

What I am trying to accomplish is, for a network connection to be established prior to login. I was working on someone's laptop remotely, and one of the changes I made required a reboot. Once it rebooted, I never gained connection to the laptop, as it doesn't get on the network until logged in. Is there any way I can accomplish this? Thanks for any help you can throw at me.

-Ken

Answer:Wireless connection at login with WPA2-Enterprise

I continued to research my issue online and have figured it out. If anyone else experiences this issue, here's my resolution. Before, I had a Windows group called "wireless users" in active directory that certain users would belong to. Then, I used WPA2-Enterprise with "User Authentication", but it only got you on the network if you were already profiled, *and* if you entered the password correctly. I found that, if the password on the account was changed using a different workstation, and you put the new password in, you wouldn't be able to login to the laptop, or you would get "no logon servers available".

Basically, in the "wireless users" group, I simple added "Domain Computers" to the members, and then changed the WPA2-Enterprise to "Users and Computers" for authentication. This way, laptops will be on the network at logon, and can login with different password if it was changed, and even profile new accounts. Also, any other wireless device (ex. iPad, Android) can connect using credentials that belong to the "wireless users" group.

Answer:PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection: Does it have WPA2-PSK ?

Hi Tom, Welcome to the Lenovo forum! From the driver you specified, it appears that you are running XP. Have you installed the SP3 update? I think that may be required for the newer wireless security. (I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong...) Good luck!

Hello. I have a brand new ThinkPad T500 2055-A16 with Windows Vista Business. I have a WiFi connection problem. It is not a signal strength problem, as it doesn't work even if I place the computer right next to the access point with no other wireless equipment near by. None of my other computers experience this problem. I even bought another ThinkPad T500 2055-A16 at the same time as this one, and that does not have the problem either. The problem is when I connect to a network using WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK. The connection works fine for half an hour, an hour or two hours, but then without warning, the connection is lost and it is not possible to reconnect for half a minute, a minute or two minutes. The exact times vary. When I switch the network to use WEP or no encryption, everything works fine. But I don't like to use no encryption and I cannot use WEP because I have other computers in my home which does not support WEP. I had this problem right from the beginning the first time I used the computer. I have tried many things like disabling power management or IPv6 and other things suggested by my ISP, but it did not change anything, so I switched them back to their default value. I have also tried to update the driver for the Intel(R) WiFi Link 5100 AGN card, but that didn't help the problem. The problem became slightly less annoying when I uninstalled Access Connections, because Vista would then reconnect as soon as it could, whereas I in Access Connections woul... Read more

Edit: Actually my other ThinkPad T500 2055-A16 also fails in the same way, but my ThinkPad SL500 2746-9BG and my Medion laptops works fine, also running Vista.

I'm using WPA2 at home and can authenticate just fine. I took my new Thinkpad to work today and cannot authenticate to our wifi network that uses WPA2-Personal with a PSK and AES encryption. I've enabled tracing with netsh wifi set tracing yes<do wifi connect>netsh wifi set tracing no but that doesn't seem to give me any useful info that I can gleam. Of course windows8 doesn't give me details on what happened, but looking in the event logs (which I now can't seem to find), I was seeing some errors claiming that the password for the network was incorrect -- it's definitely correct though. I've even tried manually connecting and ensuring the settings work and it still gives the same error. A friend has a RT surface tablet that can connect to the same network just fine so seems like it's some sort of a driver issue. Anyone familiar with broadcom driver issues in windows 8?  Is there an alternative?

Answer:Thinkpad t430u broadcom cannot authenticate to WPA2-Personal with PSK

Most router setup for WPA2 are also backwards WPA. You can use that for now.

Help!!!! In device manager, Broadcom 802.11 is enable but in adapter settings, it is disable. If enable, it says enabling then enabled but still disabled. My wireless switch at the side is turned on also in function key + f5. I try to troubleshoot using windows and it says there might be a problem with the driver of the wireless connection adapter. The driver I installed is working the first time I installed it. I even try reinstalling it.

This last three days my brother and sister use this computer. They said that we can't connect to the internet. We are using Globe broadband. When I got here, I still can see wireless connection but can't connect with mobile broadband connection. I reinstall the driver for mobile broadband then the wireless connection dissappear. I try uninstalling the driver for mobile broadband and reinstalling the driver for wireless connection but nothing happened.

Answer:Wireless Connection Broadcom 802.11

Hi,

Would I be right in thinking from your reference to the wireless switch and to Fn+F5 that you are using a laptop and the Broadcom wi-fi unit is built into it ? If this is the case, these can fail in ways to have you pulling your hair out and not show up in Device Manager. A simple solution would be to beg, borrow or steal a USB type wireless dongle - and possibly its driver software, depending on your operating system - plug it in and see if you get a wireless connection with that. If you do, then probably the on-board wi-fi unit has failed and by far the cheapest solution is to go and buy a USB type dongle.

By the way, looking at your device driver screenshot, are you aware that there is a possible problem with your DVD drive, it has a '!' symbol over it ?

Hi, I am running a Compaq Presario V3000, windows XP home. It normally has wireless connection through broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN. However, last night an error message saying that there was a problem with the device appeared. I disabled and re-enabled the device through "network connections". Immediately afterwards the connection disappeared from the network connections page. It has also disappeared from the 'Device Manager' except for the "Packet scheduler miniport" which is a 'hidden device'. The HP wireless assisstant has also gone missing. It remains as a control panel icon but it wont open. By this I mean, nothing happens at all when its clicked. I have tried the "add new hardware wizard" and am now trying to download updated drivers. But so far to no effect.

I remember a similiar problem when my computer seems to have forgotten it had a CD-ROM, where all evidence of it had disappeared. that issue resolved itself as if by magic.

Any Ideas much appreciated,
Michael

hi,

many things are free in Linux but some hardware vendors don't allow free integration of their drivers in Linux, in our case Broadcom and its network adapter drivers.

in fact it is not so complicated we have to remove the proprietary driver and replace it by another.

this small tutorial assumes you use a Ubuntu-based distro.
issue:

you went to Driver Manager and the needed driver (generally nominated as "non-free") is not activated and you can't activate it.

Requirements

You need have internet via a wired connection (it means you connect to your modem via a cable)

(i will try to find a way to do this procedure without any connection)

Preparation:

open Terminal and type:
Code:
sudo lshw -class network
it will shows you the model of your network card.

Step 1

open Terminal and type:

1-

Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer
sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source
2- Reboot

Your Wifi should be now detected

note: as you see , since we type "apt-update" we need an active internet connection , so the wired connection requirement.

step 2

since we removed the faulty driver we will update the system

1- Open Terminal and type
Code:
apt-get updates
then
Code:
apt-get dist-upgrade
2- reboot

it may take some time.

Final note:

depending your system/distro , the Driver Manager may states that the wifi driver is not enabled, even though it is, and is working..

i have eliminated the problem being the modem or router.
so it is either the broadcom, or windows 10, or both.   any clues here?
it is happening every 2 minutes, and can be fixed with the windows "troubleshooter" which gives a message that it is resetting the wi fi card.   and something about 'no DNS' problem.

I setup my D-Link Wireless N router.

Set it up with WPA2 encryption
Then when I try to connect to it, Win 7 just goes into troubleshooting mode, instead of prompting me for the passkey.

What gives?

Although my Vista laptop doesn't prompt me for the passkey either.
Just says "Unable to connect to network"

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong here?

Answer:Win 7 WPA2 network connection

If neither OS connects to it, chances are it is something with the router's settings, or the wireless card isn't compatible.

I've had this problem occasionally if I've had the network in my "profiles" or saved networks before without encryption. I would have delete them or remove them...and then try reconnecting to get prompted for the network key.

Hi, I did a system update (using the system update tool) on my lenovo laptop z61m. After I did the update I realised that my access connection saw my network adapter but it was not able to detect any wireless networks.   I then found that when I tried to turn off the wireless network adapter using Fn+F5 it doesn't turn it off and neither does it do that for the wireless wan sierra card. It, however still works with the default Windows settings and I am able to connect to the Internet if I use Windows settings. So it kinds of leads me to believe that it is Access connections rather than anything else. I tried these instructions from the forum but it was to no avail. I am in the process of installing Access connections 5.12 so I will report back on what I find. Any ideas would be most appreciated. Regards, Wei-Yen

How can I make the Access Connections on my Z61t work with WPA2?My Z61t has AC v5.02, which is uptodate per Active Update. It works well except in one location. My girlfriend is using WPA2 to secure her home wireless, and AC refuses to connect to that: it always fails to authenticate. I can make the Z61t connect via WPA2 using Windows to configure the wireless, so the problem seems to be with AC. Unfortunately using Windows is not much of a solution, since that seems to upset AC: when using Windows wireless, the Z61t's wireless radio periodically powers off, requiring me to use Fn+F5 to revive it (and then to reconnect), which is not a problem I encounter when using AC.

Hi, just built a computer, and didnt get a wireless card so I am using an old belkin wireless g usb adapter that we had lying around (it is revision 4 from the belkin site and FCC id). Anyway i got the Driver Installed in 32bit, struggled for hours in 64bit to no avail so i just reverted to 32. I see my wireless router, but it is unable to connect. It is hidden with WPA2 (not sure about encryption) but it just wont connect giving me the cryptic Windows was unable to connect to <ESSID>. Troubleshoot just tells me to turn of the router, which i have done but it doesnt work. Any suggestions?

Answer:Belkin Wireless G and WPA2

Turning off your router wouldn't solve it, seeing as that is what is giving you the wireless capabilities. Did you ever make it so your router had to have the mac address of the computer to connect to the internet? Have you tried restoring your wireless router to factory defaults( make sure to remember how it was setup though)?

I have an old computer (2005) that was working fine until yesterday when when my Verizon router got blown by a lightning strike. I was using WEP and the new has WPA2. Answer:Do I need a new wireless adapter with WPA2 ?

You should still have the option to use WEP on your new router, though WPA2 is better and after spending all of your time with Verizon you may be better off keeping it.As far as your old dongle is concerned, if there is no updated driver for it then you won't be able to use WPA2 so replacing it, as you suspected, is your only option."I've always been mad, I know I've been mad, like the most of us..." I have an older Thinkpad R61 with Vista Home version OS, and have had problems connecting to certain newer routers with WPA2 security and looked EVERYWHERE for a solution.  Looked all over the Lenovo site for an updated driver for the network adapter and couldn't locate anything newer than the 2007 driver in my laptop.  Finally found a solution and thought I'd post it for others dealing with the same issue.  My R61 with an Atheros network adapter (11 a,b,g wireless LAN mini PCI Express adapter #2) would connect to newer WPA2 routers but couldn't access the internet.  The only workaround was to change the security setting to WEP, which isn't always possible or desireable.  The only driver listed on Lenovos site is the version 7.3.1.127 from 2007.  After reading a forum post on Toms hdwr site, I found the driver listed on the unofficial Czech Atheros driver website.  Here is a link for those of you with the same problem.  Hope this helps someone, it took me many hours to understand the problem and track down the solution. https://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=22&system=4This will take you to the page with the version 7.7.0.498 driver from 4-4-2010 that solved my problem.

I have an ipaq 1940 pda with a wireless card that I'd like to connect to my WPA2 wireless network. I've previously used the pda wirelessly when our network was WEP, but I'd like to stay with the WPA for the additional security. Is there some kind of device that I could attach to my router that would enable the pda to connect to the internet? Some time ago I tried to do this with a bluetooth access point but with no success. Is there some kind of wifi device that would do the same thing?

Answer:Connecting an old pda to a WPA2 wireless network

The only thing you could connect to the router to allow the PDA to connect wirelessly with WEP encryption (while other devices connect with WPA2) would be a separate Wireless Access Point. It does though rather defeat the purpose of having the router's own Wireless Access Point secured with WPA2.

So I just setup wireless using a Cisco 1240AG, with Windows 2003 IAS as Radius server, and GPO to deploy the wireless settings and certificates to my windows clients.

This is all working great...but you can bypass needing the certificate by unchecking the "Validate Server Certificate" on the windows client. Then you just need to enter a valid domain user in the wireless access security group.

I have Validate Server Certificate Checked and specified one server that has a valid cert on my wireless setup in GPO.

What am I missing? I thought you needed to have a certificate installed on a client computer to be able to access a setup like this.

I loaded a new XP SP3 computer from CD and never connected it to the domain and i can get on the wireless with just a domain user account.

Or is this normal?

Thanks you guys for any ideas!!

Answer:Any Windows WPA2 Enterprise Wireless Experts?

I'm guessing you are using PEAP for the EAP type? You must have a certificate (cert) for PEAP to be supported on the Radius server (service won't start without it) but there are no requirements on the client. PEAP has an optional client cert piece but I've never heard of it being done. TLS requires a certificate on both ends but you have to set up a full blown PKI for client certs. It's doable with AD but may or may not fit your needs.

You might try to enforce machine authentication on your wireless side. This should create an environment where only your devices can get on the wireless. I use Aruba Wireless so I don't know the exact capabilities of the Cisco (I used Airespace before Cisco bought them but it's been at least 3+ years since I've seen it).

Also, remember the radius is doing an LDAP type query on the back end. AD is only seeing a username/password combination. The client device itself is not being considered with the normal WPA2 authentication process.

alright, here is the story... I own a little imac G3 400 MHZ model with 320 MB 20 GB hard drive, 4x DVD ROm dual booting both mac os9 and OSX 10.2.8. I have a wireless card inside it and did a little research and found that it will not (and tried it) work with a WPA2 encryption, all i get is a error saying my password is incorrect. So i went to my routers ip address and set the encrytion to WEP and IT WORKED!!! But what i wanted to do was set the encrytion to WEP connect it to the wifi, then set it back to WPA2 but after returning back to WPA2 its a different password and the wireless doesnt work. Any ideas? Would it be better if i set no encrytion and connected it then back to WPA2?? or what? please help me out in getting this to work correctly i love this imac lots and want to use it as my music portal, using grooveshark and youtube on it. It works fine, the Wifi is fast. im actually on this site right now with it using firefox 2 and camino 2 i believe, but using hard wired internet connection to type this. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Imac G3 Tangerine VS WPA2 wireless encryption!

You need to review the kinds of security that lour machine can do it ought to be able to do WEPA. If it does WEP only, you are stuck. WWEP and WEPA are exclusive. The do not accommodate neath other. WEP offers very little security. It deters honest people. But for real criminals it is a joke!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WEPNow WEPA is preferred even for home networks.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_securityThe is no provision for a loin with WEP and a switch to EWPA 'on the fly'On the Wiki page, look for this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_security#WPAv2In addition to this,  there is more  'jargon' that adds confusion to the acronyms. Unless you machine was made over 7 years ago, it should be able to do basic WEPA. Avoid WEP. To provide better help, the model number of the wireless card is needed  to find  the documentation. Of course, a wired network is much more secure.

I had assumed it was quite difficult or at least time consuming for anyone to break into a password protected WPA2-PSK encrypted wireless network. I'm still a novice or a learner when it comes to computer networking, so I realized this could be untrue.

Some days ago, my 9 year old nephew visited my parent's home where I had set up a WPA2-PSK encrypted network with what I know to be a strong password for both the router and the security phrase.

When I arrived back to my parent's home, I found out that my nephew was some how able to use the password encrypted network. There was no way he could have known the network password himself. I don't mind if my nephew uses our network, but it shows there are serious holes in the security of a WPA wireless network if he was able to bypass the password.

My parent's later told me that while I was away, my nephew was unable to connect to the network, and so used his cell phone and called his father (my brother-in-law). In just a short of time, my brother-in-law explained to my nephew how to bypass the password on our wireless network and use the internet. My parent's are not too happy about what happened and did not realize what my nephew and brother-in-law were doing at the time.

And by the way, my brother-in-law is a cyber-criminal and a felon who also uses his children to steal items, so I do not like my parent's network being vulnerable to this guy.

No matter what password is used to... Read more

Answer:No Real Security with WPA2-PSK Wireless Network

No, there's no feasible way to crack WPA2-PSK, certainly not for a 9 year old.

If you have physical access to the router, it's trivial to reset it / log in and turn off wireless security.

Why don't you ask your uncle (or nephew if you aren't exactly on speaking terms with your uncle) exactly what technique he used? I guarantee he didn't crack your password or do anything else to bypass it in the air.

Hi,
I have a PC and Xbox at home. My nephews use the Xbox to access Xbox live. I donít have an Xbox wireless adapter therefore I had to find another way so they can access Xbox live.

I first configure my Linksys wireless router on my computer using WPA2 encryption. Once set up I would take the wireless router and hook it up to the Xbox. Then on my PC I would access the Internet using a Linksys USB wireless adapter. I would just find my network and enter the WPA2 pass key.
In the last two weeks, on three occasions my wireless network changed names (example from Mynethomework to LINKSYS_453_323) and also went down to a WPA encryption.

I thought WPA2 encryption was safe, is possible that some is hacking into my wireless network?

Thank you in advance

Answer:Wireless network-WPA2 encryption security

Not unless it's an "inside job". WPA2 with a strong key is very secure. You did use a random key of at least 20 characters, right?

Hi there, I'm having an issue with my ever so brilliant IBM Thinkpad T42p, only it's not so brilliant at the moment as it has a wireless issue. WPA2-PSK is the standard for wireless security as I believe, my T42p was made in early 2005 and the adapter hasn't really been properly updated to support this security type. I have tried custom drivers to the latest drivers.

The latest drivers crash the OS for several minutes and fail to install, even when digitally signed and the custom drivers work a treat on WEP and other network security types not the modern standard though. Changing my wireless security type isn't an option, any ideas? Windows 7 works superb with the drivers but I prefer XP on this laptop as it can only handle so much and its aging. So I would need XP drivers on an quite frankly an ancient mini pci IBM Wireless card that supports modern WPA2-PSK.

If it's too much trouble I am just going to rip one out of my HP laptop but I prefer not to.

Again, any suggestions?

Thanks

Answer:IBM 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter II WPA2-PSK issue.

No one?

Anyway, it worked on some routers and failed upon others so I decided to bite the bullet and swap the cards from my other laptop.

It works great now, its an Intel something... and connects properly due to better and updated drivers. Interestingly the Thinkpad has all its original parts and the bios reported the CPU, Intel Pentium M and now I have replaced the card it's made it a Centrino (Intel branded chipset groups, Wifi, cpu and whatnot).

For anyone who owns a thinkpad and wish to check the parts list visit ThinkWiki. It maybe for Linux but hardware wise it applies to any OS and does give info on Windows anyway

Techguy Masters,

I have a wireless secured network connection problem. I can't connect to my home wireless router or any other encrypted code secured wireless. The details follow below, and I request help on how to fix it.

This is a 5-year-oldish Gateway MX-6124 laptop running under Win XP 2002, SP3. I'm using SureWest DSL, with an ISP-supplied ComTrend NexusLink 5631 Modem/Router. The router is set up as a Secure Network, using WPA encryption. The laptop wireless operation light toggles off/on correctly using Fn-F2 control keys.

I can connect to an open or non-secured wireless router, & have verified that at my church, at the Public Library, and at Starbucks. However, I cannot successfully connect to a passworded secured wireless source. I tried to use a secured network connection at my church yesterday, and could not connect. It "tries & tries" and eventually gives up and displays a cannot-connect type of message.

The laptop has worked correctly for several years on my home wireless network. It only stopped working about 3 or 4 weeks ago. I cannot recall changing anything in setup; I probably did it accidentally.

I've spent about 2 hours in a couple of sessions with SureWest tech support. They diagnosed router setup using direct connect to the router, plus they talked me through several attempts at configuring the wireless config setup on the laptop. Everything I reported to them on the config settings appeared to be just fine. They als... Read more

As the title says... Recommend a WPA2 Compatible Wireless Mini-PCI for BSD. I am going to install FreeBSD on a soekris board for use as wireless sensor information relay device. However, this data needs to be secured rather well and I just don't trust WEP for that task.

Can you guys recommend a Mini-PCI card that can do this? If not I'll have to go for a PCMCIA card to do it.

Answer:Recommend a WPA2 Compatible Wireless Mini-PCI for BSD

It's really a matter of drivers. I believe the Intel cards are OK. Most of the Broadcom cards you'll need to use NDIS Wrapper.

Hi
I was woundering if any of you could help me with deploying my wireless settings with the WPA2-Personal key :)
I have a hidden Wireless network, and I have found in Coputer Configuration - Windows Settings - Security Settings - Wireless Network, and created a new policy here.
Typed in the name, connedt even it hte network is not braodcasting and sett the security to WPA2-Personal - AES.
So fare so good.
But I would also like to add the phrase I have used in my WPA2-P.
I have heard that I could do an export of my WPA2-P. in regedit and add that to the GPO as well.
How can I do that?
Or is it a better way to deploy the key as well with the new policy of the new Wireless hidden SSID?  :)

Hi Guys, just last night I decided it was finally time to password protect our home wifi connection. Since we live in the country I'm not too worried about it, but better safe than sorry I guess. I tried once before but left it unsecured until just yesterday because one of our computers: an older Dell Latitude laptop has been having issues connecting. I'm sure it's in the wireless card because I currently have a different linksys usb card which is fully functioning, but I'd like to get this TI ACX100 card to work. I can't get the system to connect because it never prompts for the password key, and I'm not sure if there's a way to fix that or not. Any advice is appreciated, thanks!

Hi, trying to upgrade my wireless network to WPA2 so i can use the higher 802.11n speeds for my new T500 so I want to upgrade my T42 now on WPA to WPA2. (Yes I realize my T42 needs to be turned off from the wireless network before I can get the higher speed for my T500 but I still want to have both machines set up for WPA2 so I don't need to change any options in Acess Connections before using the T500 on wireless.) On my T42 I have upgraded to the latest Intel PRO/Wireless driver 12.01.1000 dated Jan 5 2009. I have latest Access Connection 5.12. When trying to install Microsoft patch KB893357 it responds that it is no longer needed on latest release (I am on XP SP3.) Setting my DIR-655 Dlink router to WPA2 only I can access it with my T500  with encryption set in Access Connection to WPA and AES. I can't access the network from my T42 with these settings. I have a new U410 here that won't connect to certain wireless networks - namely those usiing WPA/WPA2-PSK security. The network is visible, and you can enter a key. At this stage "Checking network requirements" shows for a minute or so before I am told "Can't connect to this network". The laptop has an AR9485WB-EG wireless card. There are a lot of reports of this having issues under Windows 8 across other manufacturers. The drivers were all as up to date as Lenovo allowed. I have attempted to install slightly later non-official drivers (10.0.0.227), but this has not fixed the problem. I have tried uninstalling the energy management drivers as well - this was suggested as a fix on another post. Does anyone have a solution to this, or has this laptop shipped without the ability to connect to the bulk of wireless networks?

I have just changed ISP, and the router I have been provided with is WPA2 capable. My previous router was only WPA capable.

All computers in the house, including my main desktop use WiFi to avoid having to recable.

Being security minded, I set up the new router to use WPA2-Personal / AES, and created a new profile in Vista (SP1) as my main network connection.

This is where the problems start. The connection is hit and miss. When initially setting up the profile I have to try 5 or 6 times before the connection set up correctly. Although Vista is making a connection, for some reason it keeps thinking that the 'new network' is a public network, and listed it as an 'Unidentified Network (SSID)'. No internet access is permitted.

Customising the network to make it private does not let Vista see the internet. You have to totally delete the Wireless Connection, and repeat the setup until an attempt actually works (no obvious reason why an attempt works or doesn't, it seems random).

Now I have got it such that it automatically connects most times on restart. However, if I do anything during the session to alter the router settings, or of the PC goes to standby, on restart I have the same problem with Vista identifying the WiFi as a 'Public Network' and not permitting internet access.

I have an XP laptop connected to the same router, which has no problems reconnecting automatically.

Anyone have any ideas how to make the Vista machines automatic reconnect more reliable? It... Read more

I'm attempting to use my Linksys WRT54GL with Tomato 1.27 as a wireless bridge, with an Airport Extreme (MB053LL/A) as the main router. Following instructions at http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/3810281 and configuring the Linksys as a wireless client, I can get things working just fine with no security enabled on the Airport Extreme.

However, as soon as I turn on WPA2 on the Airport Extreme, and setting the appropriate security entries on the Linksys, suddenly things go belly-up: the bridge no longer seems active.

I've tried, on the Linksys/Tomato side, various combinations of WPA2 and TKIP, TKIP/AES, and AES...and nothing seems to work. I'm quite certain that the password is the same, too.

Is this simply a mismatch of WPA2 versions or somesuch? Am I simply doomed to failure? I just bought the (used) Airport on Craigstlist; I'd hate to have to sell it right away and get something else, but I will if it's not going to work.

Any thoughts? Many thanks.

I haven't ever used tomato or an airport extreme, but I've had no problems using ddwrt on a wrt54gl as a wireless bridge. It might be worth a shot to try ddwrt instead of tomato and see if it works.

Every time when we come back from work (i.e., connected to wireless networks at work), we need to restart the modem and router before our laptops can connect to our home wireless network. The error message is "This connection has limited or no connectivity. You might not be able to access the Internet or some network resources. "

We never had this problem until I changed from WEP to WPA2. The current settings are:

on the router (D-Link, DI-524): WPA2, PSK
on the laptops: WPA2-PSK, AES

It doesn't look like that our laptops do not support WPA2, since they would work after restarting modem and router. And it works fine as long as we are at home, whether we restart our laptops or not.

I am totally confused and would appreciate any thoughts you can provide! Thanks!

Connecting my T61 (Intel 4965agn wireless card, Vista) to router I get 'local only' on the Internet side of the router.   ipconfig shows connection to router as default gateway 192.168.1.254 and both DHCP and DNS servers as 10.0.0.138 and DHCP and autoconfiguration both enabled.    That appears all identical to T43 XP machine alongside it that has full access to internet.    Network figure shows no connection from router to internet, other machines on network, like the T43, connect fully.  Windows Network Diagnostics tells me  there is a problem with DNS configuration that cannot be repaired automatically. Driver version on T61 is 11.1.1.11 and Lenovo site has V 12.04.0000. QUESTION - Is there another fundamental problem likely in my ISP setup, or can I install that driver and hope it fixes my problem?

(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

And :

I have a problem with internet access when connecting wirelessly on ONE Win 7 64 laptop on ONE router. The same laptop connects to internet just fine to ALL other routers, while ALL other computers (with different OS) connect to internet just fine via this router.
The laptop in question connects well to the router itself and you can red everywhere that it is connected to internet as well. But when i try to load any pages in any browsers i get "server not found" in FireFox or "This webpage is not available" in Chrome. Email and torrent clients don't work either.
This does not seem to be a DNS issue because accessing sites via IP address does not work.
Pinging any sites or IP addresses does not work.
The strangest thing is that the situation have been worsening slowly over last 2 weeks - at first everything was just fine, then i would have to reload pages every now and then, last days i would succeed less and less frequently and as of yesterday - no luck at all...

Anyone has any idea what this could be?

Welcome to Seven Forums Starko,

Do you have the latest driver for your Atheros?
ATHEROS drivers for Microsoft Windows (Atheros?????)

If you have not done this yet, please remove all wireless profiles stored in your computer.
Easy Way to Delete Wireless Network Profile in Windows 7
Re add your SSID (wireless network) that you're trying to connect to with the correct encryption.

If none of the above suggestions worked please install and run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector from one of your wireless computers. Double click the Xirrus Icon on your Desktop, Tap the Printscreen key on your keyboard, open up Paint then choose Edit from the Menu and select Paste, then SAVE it. I have been on the phone collectively for 6 hours with AT&T as well as had a technician out here to look at this problem. I have a new wireless router box.

The whole At&T system went down briefly (tvs and all). When it booted back up my computer wouldn't recognize the wireless network.

After getting a new box, it will now recognize the wireless network in my home. It says I am connected to the network with excellent strength but I still cannot get online.

My desktop works fine and I plugged the ethernet cable into my computer and it still won't get online being hardwired to the router.

My firewalls are turned off.

I have run an ipconfig with the following message:

I think its two problems. first the listed IP tells me you are not connected to the router/modem. the other problem is the sfc results.

Fixing the SFC files may fix the connectivity. do you have a backup to restore from?

Limited access is usually a configuration issue. Are you using "homegroup" for networking in win 7?

I would re-install the drivers for your comp wifi card and router.

I have been trying to connect my daughter's laptop to the internet through the wireless router in her university accom. I have got connection to the D-Link router and am able to transfer files to another computer on the network. However I cannot connect to the internet through Explorer. I have checked Tools/Options/Connection and made sure that connection is to be via LAN and that automatic detection of settings is ticked. Any advice on what else I need to do would be appreciated.

Answer:No internet access despite wireless connection

1) Check the client firewalls.2) Check the host firewall for rules that affect that client.3) Power down the router and client; leave it for a couple of minutes; power up the router; leave it for another couple of minutes; then power up the client, making sure that the adapter is switched before logging in to a user account.(Keeping it brief as it's getting late).

I have Sky BB. One of my laptops suddenly won't connect to the Internet even though the wireless adapter shows I'm connected to the router with signal strength 'good'. If tried 'repair' to no avail, plus rebooting a couple of times.

Answer:Wireless connection ok but can't access Internet

Try deleting the existing "profile" that has been saved so that you connect automatically when the network is available, and then go through the procedure to "Connect" again. You'll be prompted to enter any WEP/WPA security key and, once connected, a new profile will be saved. If using Windows' own software to manage your wireless networking, for details about removing the existing profile click here

I do apologise, I asked this question in another thread (http://www.computing.net/answers/hardware/i-want-to-be-wireless-without-the-net/88054.html) in the General Hardware Forum, and I'm not sure if it was the right one, so I'm asking it again here too. A mod can delete the wrong post if neccessary.Hi, My daughter has a tower in her room, and it is not connected to the net as she is too young for it (she is 7, and autistic). However her disability means that she breaks her keyboard and loses her mouse, but she also has an android tablet that she is pretty good at looking after. There is an app for her droid called unified remote, and it is a mouse and keyboard, but it need to be wireless to use. So, I would like her to have the wireless access, but I cannot allow her access to my lan or the net. Is there a way I can do this? I am a tech amature, so I'm not a novice, but I aint no expert either, so please help with a littleinfo if you suggest anything. Many thanks, Neil.

Answer:I need wireless access without internet connection

"I Need Wireless Access But Block The Internet"The wireless function of the router will still work without the ADSL cable connected, so disconnect the ADSL cable from the router. The ADSL cable is the one which comes from the telephone wall socket.

Hi, I have an hp laptop(g60 series) running windows 7 and I have major problems with my internet connection. It started two weeks ago, and I called my internet service provider which directed me to the HP line, but they didn't help at all. Finally my sister played around with the plugs(the wireless/router) and it worked for a day. But it doesn't work anymore..? I don't know what the problem is. I turned off the router/wireless box and waited then switched it back on, I also plug things and out. And I tried plugging the cord into my laptop but I can't get the internet there either...?

When I called HP they said I probably have a virus, and something was wrong with my IP address. But I ran scans and my computer is running normally. I also have norton anti virus. I know i'm rambling, but I really need help. I already called/turned it off and on...everything that's suppose to help it. Should I take it into geeksquad? Idk, what to do. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My wireless connection was working fine before a reformat. I did a reformat and now I cannot get access to the internet. I get 'page cannot be display' error when launching IE. I know it's not my router having the problem because I have two other laptop in the house that is accessing wireless perfectly fine at the moment.

When double click on wireless icon on bottom right corner , i get packets/bytes being sent but NOT recieving. Signal strenth: excellent.

Under Networking properties, I have remove the wireless card from the NET Bridge and reboot. Add back to Bridege and reboot. I tried assigning static LAN IP and 'Obtain IP auto' option. All of which did not solve the problem. I have also update the most recent driver for the wireless card. If I connect the laptop via hardwire LAN ethernet cable, then I can assess the internet fine.

Hmmmm.....This is a strange one  . Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,.

Hi guys! I have a problem!

I bought a laptop like two weeks ago and I successfully connected to a Public Wireless Network that's in my range. I had internet connection for like a week but after that something happened. Its been few days that I connect to the network but I have Local Access Only. I haven't changed anything in my settings, everything is exactly the same instead of that I don't have internet when I'm using this network. There is another public network in my range and I successfully connect to it with both local and internet access. The problem is that the when I use the network I'm using now I have really slow internet speed (like 15-20kb/s).

Is there any chance that the admin of the network could refuse internet access for my machine or something, and if yes, can't I just change my MAC Address or IPv6? I have a friend who'se in the same range and he's using this network and he has both internet and local access. I tried to disable User Accounts, and I enabled "Automatically Detect Settings". I tried to remove the network and then manually add it but nothing works. Do you have a solution for my problem? It will be great if somebody can help and I really appreciate that. Thank you in advance!

btw, I'm using Windows Vista and here's copy/paste of my ipconfig /all (when I'm using another network, not the one I have problems with)

So after moving and getting u-verse installed, my pc cannot connect to numerous websites when connected to wifi. When wiring the connection via ethernet, all works fine. I get "took too long to respond" when trying to access websites such as speedtest.net, att.com, msn.com, etc. Youtube videos in 1080p load quickly. I don't even know who the ISP at my gf's last apartment was, but no issues before this.

Att doesn't seem to be able to figure out the issue. My gf hasn't yet brought her work computer home for me to try it out there. I don't seem to be having any problems accessing websites via my Note 5.

For that it's worth:

In device manager > network adapters > there is "802.11n Wireless LAN Card" and "Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller". Tried to update drivers via device manager, says both are up to date.

Answer:PC wireless connection won't let me access various websites

Have you gone in and "forgotten" the old wireless connection? If not, it is still trying to connect using the information at you former location.

Disclaimer: I have never seen nor used Win 10
These, I think are the steps:
Go to settings >Network & Internet >Wi-Fi >Manage Wi-Fi settings>Click on the network you're having problems with>Forget>Turn Wi-Fi off & on again>Select network & enter password.

I have a 16dbi antenna hooked up to my wireless card in my pc. I was wondering if I got an access point or a router if I could use that connected to the antenna and then just use the standard much smaller antenna on my pc to log into that AP or router. The access point or router or bridge or whatever would be connected to the big antenna and then I could just use my regualr antenna on my wireless card to log onto that so I don't have this giant thing attached to my pc anymore.

Really I am not hip to wireless at all so parden my using the wrong terms if I did.

thanks!

if what you're asking is if you can swap the 16 dbi ant connected to your pc to your router, it will work if it can be unscrewed from your pc and if the antenna ports on your pc and router are the same.

if so, yes you can swap antennas so that you dont have a antenna bigger than your pc

Hi,My son is suddenly unable to access the internet through either his BT Yahoo default browser (he can't log on) or Internet Explorer.(Internet Explorer cannot display the Webpage error)He has a strong wireless connection and indeed can view and access other computers which are on our home network. They can also see his laptop. That tells me the router and his wireless connection are fine. All other network computers can access the internet and that includes BT Yahoo, so that rules out an ISP issue.I've run Network Diagnostics for XP and the log tells me that an HTTP connection cannot be established.Am currently running an AV check.Any ideas what has caused this and how to fix it please? Thanks,Steve

Otherwise, I guess I'll purchase Wireless for Dummies and memorize it. Thanks.

If the adapter switched on?
Does it show in Device Manager as "OK"?
In Network Connections does the wireless connection show as 'enabled'?
Do you detect your wireless network?
Exactly what happens when you try to connect?

Have you successfully connected this laptop via ethernet?

I used the recovery media to restore a friends Acer laptop to a fresh install. Everything went like a dream until it came to installing the Linksys wireless adaptor, we installed the Linksys software & it got an association with the router but no internet connection.

I tried ipconfig /release, it was already released, then ipconfig /renew, it could not renew for some reason? Could it be the XP native wireless configuration & the Linksys software trying to connect over each other? In which case what can I do? Anything else it could be?

Thanks

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I'm helping a friend connect a laptop to a wireless router that is already in use and works fine with another laptop. The connection is with Talk Talk and the wireless router part no: HG520S. The laptop that is already in use is running Windows XP, the new laptop is Windows Vista. We have got as far as having a connection but we have a limited service so we can't get access to the net. The printed instructions and screen shots bear no resemblance to what comes up on the screen. I'm thinking this is a Vista thing more than a router problem as the router is already set up and working fine. Can anybody help me push the correct button and get connected? Thank You All

Answer:Connected via wireless connection but no access to the internet?

Why not use dynamic addresses? Anyhow, when using static you have to get the computer on the same subnet as the router--at least one of 192.,168.3.3 and 192.168.1.1 is incorrect.

Unless you are using ipv6 suggest you uninstall it:
Start - Run - ipv6 uninstall - OK

Can you get the exact results of another ipconfig /all to the working PC? Maybe by saving a Notepad text file to CD or flash drive or floppy.

Answer:public wireless access & connection problems

make and models of machines/modems/router

download this program and see what networks are in your area and what channels they are on

Free software to check signal strength of wireless is netstumbler 0.4.0 available for download from http://www.stumbler.net/

no it may be simply changing channels

can you also post an IPCONFIG for when its working and when it stops

TWO Methods to do that - some people have problems with ONE----

ONE ---------------------------------
start
run
cmd
ipconfig /all

rightclick in the box
select all
enter
control key + C key - to copy
then reply here and
control key + V to paste

TWO -----------------------------------------------

Start, Run, CMD to open a DOS window and type:

IPCONFIG /ALL >C:\RESULT.TXT

Open C:\RESULT.TXT with Notepad and copy/paste the entire results here.

Now when it stops working - try this

NEXT lets see if you can get out onto the internet with both names and IP's - its possible the IP number you get back on the first test is different to the one I post {I'm in UK} so use the number you get instead of mine

------------------------------------------------
try ping the name and then the IP see below

start
run
cmd

Are you accessing through wifi or wired?

Do you have other computers in your house? If so can they connect (wired or wireless)?

What is your router?

Apologies if this has been answered in the wealth of other similar (but in my eyes not quite the same) posts on such subjects.

I have an Asus Windows 7 laptop with an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter. I am trying to access a student communal network (IT support is sadly none-existent) which means I cannot perform tests on the router, but can confirm that my girlfriend can connect with a Macbook in the same room as me, and that other Windows users can too in other areas. I can connect via ethernet into the wall (although not 100% sure this is the exactly the same network) and I can connect to other unrelated wireless networks with no problem. Up until a couple of days ago I was able to connect, but have not done any windows updates that might have changed my settings. When attempting to connect my computer tells me (often, not always) I have "Internet access" under "IPv4 Connectivity", but the browser does nothing (or, sometimes, will struggle and load one webpage, only to fade into uselessness again immediately afterwards - very much a tease of a connection).

I don't know much about computers (surprise surprise..) but have done the following.

1) Disabled various firewalls/antivirus [Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Firewall, AVG] (perhaps worth saying I have never had Nortons, McAfee or any other anti-virus installed on this laptop)
2) Reset Network Adaptor using Windows Diagnostics Tool.
3) Updated the driver by searching automaticall... Read more

I am only getting a local access when connected to wireless router. I am running windows vista x64 and can connect directly to the router with cable no problem. Also I can connect to wireless when connecting to the router using unsecured network settings. I have tried everything from resetting modem and router to deleting network to different types of security etc. All other computers in house mac and pc work fine with no problem. Here are my ipconfig stats.... Thanx Ray
Also have updated wifi driver

Hello all,

Long time lurker, first time poster here.

I just installed 32-bit win7 ultimate on my laptop, and am (still) having a spot of bother getting my internets from a public router located near my girlfriend's place.

My problem is the following: I connect to the router fine and the signal quality is excellent, but there is no internet access at all.
The wireless connection icon in the taskbar shows a yellow warning triangle, and when hovering over it with my mouse pointer I read the following: "no internet access".

Last week when I still had xp on the laptop I had the exact same problem: excellent connection, no internet access.
Both with xp and win7 I had no problems at all connecting to my router at home.

I have been connecting to the troublesome router for months on my iphone, without any issues. Any random macbook also connects to it without any problems.

When I run diagnostics I am told the following: "wireless network connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration".

TCP/IPv4 is set to "obtain an IP address/DNS server automatically", and has been since the beginning, with DHCP enabled.

I've tried anything and everything I found floating around on the internet (including disabling TCP/IPv6 as well as a whole slew of other settings), but to no avail.

Obviously, my wireless card (Intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN) works perfectly (works great on my home router), and so does the public router from which I'm trying to get internet ... Read more

I do not really get this wieless networking setup stuff so I really need some help. I read some of the other posts on this topic but it didn't seem to address what I'm experiencing:

I have a cable modem for internet access. I have a desktop PC and a Laptop connected to it through a Linksys BEFSR41 router. The PCs are in different rooms but each room has an RJ45 wall connection.

I now have a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. I'd like to have it active so that I can take the laptop around the house or patio.

I connected the wireless router and I have a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz 802.11g card inserted in the laptop. The connection is excellent as the wireless router indicator and laptop indicator both show signal strength as "Excellent".

So, as I see it the laptop found the wireless router and connected with excellent signal strength. However, I can't get a connection to the internet unless I unhook and use the wired connections.

I am not a networking person so I have to ask the dumb question: "What am I doing wrong"?

Thank you.

Hi guys, I got a problem with my wireless network.

It was working fine but suddenly I can't connect to the internet. I am using Netgear USB adapter WG111v3 and the smart wizard has successfully detected my router network but unable to communicate: no sent/receive packets at all. The problem occurs the next day I updated my windows 7 (System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 [KB947821] January 2010) critical update, but I did restart my computer the same day and the internet still worked fine.

Netgear has Smart wizard to help connect the internet. The wizard shows that the signal is strong, but no indication that it's connected to router or internet. I've tried to use the USB on other computers and worked fine and I've installed the latest driver for both the USB and Atheros.

When I looked at the status, it shows that IPv4 and IPv6 are not connected; Media State enabled; signal full; no sent or received packets.

I only can use LAN cable to connect internet and these are what I've tried:
1. Use other adapter D-link; it's still not connected. Same problem. But no problem at all on other computer with windows 7 as well.
2. Use static IP; not working
3. cmd ipconfig /all; it doesn't mention about wireless at all.
4. services.msc basically reseting WLAN autoconfig
5. Use windows setting instead of smart wizard
6. Change password encryption in router and restart it
7. Reinstall the drivers
8. Update the windows again (new update)
9. Connect to other router

Answer:Wireless help, comp shows connection but cant access web

Did you try the "Diagnose Connection" when you get the IE error?

ip config looks good for the wireless adapter

do a ipconfig /all

Have you tried a hard restart of the modem and router?

I am no longer able to connect to the internet....my connection states limited access, 1 icon states connected, signal strength excellent, another not connected. I checked with provider and rebooted modem, etc....Everything seems fine on their end. Internet for other house computer works fine. the one not connecting is a Gateway NV53 using Windows 7,

I ran a scan with PC tools and no problem was found, Tried a system restore, but all restore points are gone. I also tried to connect after disableing PCTools firewall, but unable to connect. The problem just appeared, I did not make any recent changes to the laptop, other than taking it to work and connecting to internet there.

Is there a virus that might cause this, or perhaps an easy fix?
