Dual NIC Win 7 Machine - Can I Create 2 Diff. Networks?

Question: Dual NIC Win 7 Machine - Can I Create 2 Diff. Networks?

I have my house wired for 2 separate gigabit Ethernet networks. I want to create one network, let's call it "A" that everyone can get at for backups, AV files, etc. That network would have specific, physically separate hard drives in the Win 7 server. I want to then create a second network, let's call it "B" that is only for SOHO stuff. It too would have physically separate drives in the server. Can I do that?

Also, do I need anything special with the dual NIC arrangement? I can use a x1 dual NIC? or get a board with dual NIC's ? And, of course, I have 2 different gigabit switches as well.

I am guessing one network would need to be 192.168.1.X and the other 192.168.0.X, which is fine.

The main thing I want to do is make sure that the hard drives assigned to network A can't be read or altered by network B, and vice-versa. As a matter of fact, I don't want A drives shares visible on the B network, or vice versa.

What do I need to do in terms of IP range, static or DHCP, subnets, drive assigning, etc? I've never tried something like this before. I don't want to do something like give drive shares different passwords because all that does is create "forbidden fruit" and such. If the drives are never seen, they are never wondered about.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Preferred Solution: Dual NIC Win 7 Machine - Can I Create 2 Diff. Networks?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Dual NIC Win 7 Machine - Can I Create 2 Diff. Networks?

Yes, it's doable. The layout (wiring) can be two variation:

Code:

(A)
modem == router----pc----NAS/hd's
|
+------- other devices

(B)
modem == router1---- pc
|
+---- router2 --- other devices

Whether wired or wifi connected, the controls are similar - - which layout to you favor?

Hey guys, i did a search for this but couldnt come back with much..

So i have a wired network in one room that also connects to another pc in my office via wireless, but im adding a couple more computers in the office and i would like to extend the network without having to buy more wireless adapters. that might be a little confusing so this is basically what im trying to do...

-Current Setup-
4 computers and in one room all connected to my wireless router with cat6

1 computer in office with a wireless adapter connected to that router in my room.Click to expand...

-The way i want the new Setup-
4 computers in my room all connected to my wireless router with cat 6

3 computers in office connected to a little 4 port hub, one of those pc's connected to my router in my room via wireless adapter.

I need to be able to access resources on any computer from any computer. All pcs will be on 24/7. obviously this isnt the best way to do things because of the bottleneck, but until i get the time to run my cat6 for gigabit lan, i need to be able to do thisClick to expand...

So how would i go about linking these 2 networks together with a single wireless adapter?

I have upgraded due to a sytem failure (motherboard took a hit from a non grounded outlet, that was a faulty read from the SP) and need to access my old hd. What I am wondering is which is the most straight forward of options? I really need a host of files from the old hd. It is a 40 gig western d. Xp, compaq style. Can I put this Hd in my dell dimension as a secondary drive to grab files? I also have a P 1 class machine that I might be able to switch the compaq drive with the current one? The least painful & safe procedure is what I am after.

TIA,
Jay

Answer:dual Booting diff ver of xp to grab greatly needed files!

You can hook up the drive to your current machine as you suggest. You would need to re-set the jumpers on the back of the drive to slave position if connecting the drive to an IDE channel that already has a drive installed on it (hard drive or optical drive)

I have tried this before and have come to dead end
there should be a way to wire
1 machine with 2 nic's to 1 router (1st nic) 1 swich layer 3 to 2nd nic
I would like a vpn behind the network that is already up
I don't want to do ICS as that can open the other machines to WAN from main machine
the layer 3 switch /router is already running fine with 4 pc's on it the router to WAn has 2 pc's and that works fine also
but the pc I would like to have to share file between the 2 networks will not allow both nics enabled at same time

Hi all,

I have 2 Windows 7 machines, one a PC and one a laptop. Both show identical network maps (the 2 computers and a router), yet my PC does not have 4 bars in the task bar (indicating good range?). Instead it has a "monitor" type icon with a pitchfork symbol on it. The laptop is working on a wireless signal from my router, while the PC is direct-cabled into the same router (local area connection).

Should my PC also be showing 4 bars, or is the current symbology correct?

Should I change my setup in any way?

Thanks for any help, noels

Yes... wireless shows bars, direct connect shows a square box thing.

If you put your mouse on the monitor symbol, does it pop up a little window that says "Internet Access" ... if it does then it's working.

You do have access to the internet and your file shares... Ya?

Hi there

trying various VM's on a HOST W10 under VMWARE WORKSTATION 10 -- (XP / W7 / W8.1 / W10 / Linux ) -- all these fail to start network either in BRIDGED or NAT mode.

If the HOST is now a W8.1 system connections all work for these machines

Still looks like Networking problems exist in W10 -- whether it's Windows or in VMware I don't know.

Maybe it's time to try out HYPER-V !!!
Cheers

Answer:Vmware on HOST W10 Machine Networks don't work

Virtualbox versions later than 4.3.12 running on host W10 will not start any VM either. https://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=63923

I prefer Hyper V but can't install it as I don't have SLAT so old version of VirtualBox for me.

I have a Linksys WR54GS router as my main router attached to the internet. I run a Bed & Breakfast and I give my guests free access to the internet via WiFi. My problem is, I also use that network for my business and personal computers and I am afraid that a tech savvy guest could hack into my files. I thought that if I connect a second WiFi router, I could set up a second network which my guests could use to access the web thru my main router.

Does anyone have a clue if this is possible?

Answer:I want to connect 2 Wi-Fi routers to create 2 separate networks

It mostly depends on the company that is your internet provider... With their sayso, you can do it easily... just be sure the channels are widely different, and that you can control them through your client setups so the customer understands what and where.

I'm so confused.
And I wonder if I might ask for some help understanding what I'm seeing and why.

I just built a new Windows 10 pro machine from an ISO image.
NO issues.
It works fine.
It pretty much builds itself.

But when I look at my "View your basic Network information and set up connections" screen, I have thee items listed.
NETWORK, NETWORK 2 and NETWORK 3.
All read "Access Type Internet"
All read "Connections: Ethernet"

I have one Ethernet card in the pc.
I don't do anything wireless. Yet.

Why do I have three items listed ?

Of the three that are listed. how can I tell which one I am using ?

With Windows 7, I could merge all thee.
With Windows 10, how do I merge all three or delete the two I am not using ?
And once deleted, how to I tell Windows 10 not to create any more the next time the pc re-boots ?

Thanks in advance for any information.

Answer:Why does my Windows 10 pro machine have thee active networks listed

showing a pic of what you are seeing and stating the Windows version may also help as Win10 AU has different options to 1511 for example.

the other two may just be the Teredo Tunneling Protocol (for IPV6 i think) and the isatap Adapter which are installed by default.

I have seen on a friend's computer where the Adaptor shows up 3 times but the other two are "Virtual Adaptors"
Open a Admin Command Prompt (RC Start button) and type ipconfig /all then <Enter> and you will get a report......

note the space between the g and /

Dear All,
I am currently having a single stick of Corsair Vengeance 8 GB DDR3 1600 Mhz RAM in my system.
I want to fit in another 8 GB module to have a total of 16 GB RAM. Do I have to get the same model of RAM as my existing one for that or I can opt for a Kingston HyperX Fury 8 GB DDR3 1866 Mhz RAM?
Please clarify.
Thanks,
Troy.

Answer:[Query]Can i fit in a diff brand RAM with diff freq?

Can't be 100% certain when you mix RAM modules of different makes and speeds but it's pretty likely it would work. One thing is sure is that both would be running at the speed and settings of slower one.

Dear All,

As we all know, the hard disc drives are shown in red color when we run out of space and in blue color when enuf free space is there. I was wondering if it is possible to have diff. colors for diff. partitions say red, green, orange etc (irrespective of space present or not). Plz let me know if that is possible or not.

Thanks in advance,
Troy.

Answer:Diff. color codes for diff. partitions?

I can't imagine wanting to change this....giving up the reason the colors change. Wouldn't you want a quick visual indicator if your drive was low on space? If I had a problem or some kind of malware that was filling my drive, I'd want to know.

Question: Dual Networks

Is it possible to be connected to a wired network and also have access to a separate wireless network, at the same time?If this topic has been covered before, please excuse but the search facility won't work at present.

Answer:Dual Networks

I doubt it - you can switch from one to the other but as far as I know you cannot. There is of course nothing to stop you being on line with your wired network and then seeing if your wireless can connect.

Question: Dual Networks

I don't know alot about anything, I know alittle bit about alot of things. That's how I get in trouble.
I've had aLinksys E3000 router network at my motel for a couple of years, everything was working fine for a long time. Just moved into a house and ordered Time Warner for TV, Internet & Phone. Ok, the box they gave me was a router & phone connection. I told them I already have a couple of networks running and didn't want the router. Had to use it anway for the phone. I don't want the phone but the whole package was cheaper with the phone. OK, so now I have the TW router. The cable guy said just to run my old router to the new one. I did, it works but now I can't access the E3000's set up page. I assume that's cuz it's going through the new router (which setup I can access). I would just take the new one out but I'd need a cable with cable connector on one end and ethernet on the other or some type converter. Can't find one. Anyone have any ideas how to make these 2 routers play nice together or how to get the E3000 to get cable?
As usual, comments orflames are welcome.
Tnx,
Dusty

Montage from FUSE labs is a flexible web-based service that makes it fun and easy to create and share a visual album of the web on the topics you care about. You can design your Montage around any topic you can imagine by adding content that pulls information from a variety of sources, including RSS feeds, Twitter, Bing News, and YouTube. (EDIT: At present Montage pulls from twitter, Bing news and Images, rss feeds, YouTube and Vimeo )
This is so cool ! Suppose you wanted to create a page with some topic you want. Montage does it in a jiffy using the Bing Search as it pulls news RSS feeds contents, photos, Tweets, Bing News, YouTube videos etc from the web. And the best part is you can design them to put it on a page very easily and these can be static or dynamic getting the latest which keeps on changing as the information arrives. Even you can add your content from your Blog while designing the page. And these can saved to the Montage gallery on the cloud. And this look very cool , you have to check them to get an idea.
And it also provides option to share, Retweet , embed them as a blog post etc
It reminds me a bit of Flipboard ? an iPad App , which was in the news few months back but Montage looks more cooler as Montage allows us to design the contents and then can share, RT ,embed etc to further socialize it. Give it a look.
At present its not available to all and only a select few partners have the ability to build and share Montages but anyone w... Read more

Hey guys, I'd appreciate some input from you networking gurus on something.

Right now, I've got kind of a hybrid network at home. Our only cable line comes in through the garage and so we have the following setup:

downstairs:

cablemodem (comcast 16mbit) -> D-Link DR-655 router -> powerline (homeplug AV 200mbit)

upstairs --> powerline adapter -> Netgear N router
upstairs2 --> 4port powerline adapter -> ps3 / pc1 / pc2

The upstairs router and the downstairs router are 2 diff wifi networks, though the upstairs router is just getting the signal from downstairs. All this is because our house seems to be wifi proof and it's difficult to have one wireless router serve the whole house.

Both my dad and I work at Cisco and are planning on getting a Cisco vpn router so we don't have to login to vpn all the time. I believe it's a Cisco 871 CVO - so I'm trying to see if I can have a similar setup using powerline adapters and a 2nd upstairs router.

There is another powerline standard that isn't compatible with Homeplug AV (simply Homeplug I think?) So I was wondering if I could have a separate powerline lan using those adapters. Would the two powerline lans conflict with each other even though the devices would ignore each other?

Or should I simply use a d-link repeater I have laying around and use that to repeat the cisco router signal?

Sorry I know it sounds convoluted. It's quite possible that th... Read more

It seems that when a machine has dual nics it likes to share that fact with other machines. Here's my scenario:

I have a server, ServerA, with two nics. One with a 150.102.x.x address to the corporate network and one with a 10.x.x.x address for a private network.

When I map a drive to another server, ServerB, over the 150.102.x.x nic it also seems to share the fact that it has a 10.x.x.x interface too. Where I see this is on ServerB. If I do a netstat command on ServerB, I will see both ServerA addresses at the time of mapping the drive and periodically at other times.

Is there some way to setup ServerA so that the two nics are totally isolated from each other. I would have thought that would be default behavior but it doesn't seem to be. Since seeing this issue I have setup other similar scenarios with the same results.

Thanks.

Hi All,
I'm running Vista 64 business on a Compaq 6710b, up to two weeks ago I connected my computer to my company network via the docking station and a 100mbit wired connection firewalled with limited Internet access. Additionally I connected to a wireless network via WiFi where Internet was not limited and by switching proxy I had both company and open network !!

All was well until I experienced the Blue Screen of Death and I had to restore the system. After the restore the dual network scheme doesn't work !!!

Apparently at some point something was set in the network configuration that made the dual network possible, but what ???

Any ideas or tips ???

I have a 100Mb network that accesses the Internet but wish two of my computers in this network to transfer files with a Gbit connection. How do I make certain they will utilize this connection instead of the slower main network?

Answer:Dual Nics, segregated networks?

If both computers are on both networks, it's a pain. Far easier to just get a small gigabit switch, connect it to the 100Mb network, and connect those 2 computers to that switch.

Here is how I would like my setup to look. I am using Clark Connect Home Edition (free) under VMware.

eth0 (Wan1)
eth1 (Wan2)
eth2 (Lan1) Virtual Machine Virtual Adapter (Host Only)
eth3 (Lan2) Virtual Machine Physical Adapter (NAT) (DHCP)

This way, Lan1 will be a strictly virtual LAN and will use a virtual switch inside the virtual machine to bridge to a physical adapter on the server so the host computer can use the VM as the firewall.

Then the firewall will also send traffic from both WAN ports to a second LAN that will use a physical NIC on the server to send to a switch or other device on the network to provide internet to other machines.

I would also want the host machine (virtual adapter) to have access to both WAN ports.

Other than installing both the dual WAN and hot lan modules that clark connect has, does anyone forsee any problems with this setup?

Answer:Dual WAN, with Dual LAN on a Virtual Machine

If your host is a Windows machine, make sure to disable TCP/IP, File and Print Sharing, and the Microsoft Client on the WAN interfaces.

My machine has a non-clean install of win 10, which I have been using for months. I would like to do a clean install of windows 10, but I don't want to be down for days getting everything setup. So I figured I would run it in a VM on the newly installed OS while I set things up on new machine.

I used disk2vhd to create VHDX files from my c and d drive (users folder on d). I created a VM and added the disks. But hypervisor won't recogize the disk as bootable.

I am thinking this is because my host uses UEFI, so the VHDX's were created with a VHDX instead of mbr? I have tried booting the VM using the window install disk to do bootred /rebuildbcd, but the command fails, I am guessing because it doesn't work on UEFI disks?

Any suggestsions?

Answer:Create VM from physical machine

By default Hyper-V creates a new vm as Generation 1 (BIOS / MBR). If your vhd file is UEFI /GPT, you need to set the new vm as Generation 2 (UEFI).

I have to setup a friend's machine (a recent XP model) so that it can also run his very old Lotus 123 v3 software .
He needs to do this because he wrote very sophisticated spreadsheets in Lotus many years ago, and does his (accounting) work on it. They are full of macros, formulae etc. and after much trying they cannot be converted.

So I was thinking of partition magic, create a new dos partition and just install his Lotus 123 there-on. Although it would be nice to share files between partitions, this is probably not possible, given the differences with the file directory structure.

Does anyone have experience of this? Any pitfalls - eg. does Lotus 123 write directly to the bios?

Thanks in advance

I am at a remote site, with two satellite connections to the 'net, running on two different corporate networks (don't ask). Both will connect to the internet, one is behind a vpn to a proxy down south, the other is direct. The problem is when running dual-nic, one plugged into each network, all the file sharing / apps work as they should, but the internet connection is only going through the nic attached to the vpn. If that connection fails, it does not seem to fail over onto the other connection, which is still up. All systems are winxp pro sp2, gigabit or 100mbit in the office.

Answer:Could not create the java virtual machine

It looks like you have a corrupted java installation.

Can you go to add/remove programs in windows control panel, and remove all the Java Runtime Environment installed ?

Next, open the browser and visit java.com: Java + You. Click on the "Download Now" button. And follow the instructions displayed, it should install the latest Java Platform on your machine, and also verify the installation is successful.

I've been having a really bad time trying to solve my problem! I was playing almost every-day a game called Minecraft and one day all of a sudden an error came up with a pop-up window saying "Could not create java virtual machine". I've been trying to find a solution but nothing succeded! Please help me!!!!!!!!

Answer:Could not create java virtual machine!

Are you using Java or Microsoft Java? This sounds like a Microsoft Java problem. Can you do the following for me:

1.

On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then click Run.

2.

Type: cmd

3.

At the command prompt, type: jview
If a message displays information about Java, you have the MSJVM installed on your computer.
If a message displays 'Jview' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or batch file, you do not have the MSJVM installed on your computer.

This will tell me if you have MSJVM installed. Would you also check your installed version of java under the control panel and ensure you are running a current version.

I have tried all the suggestions in your forum (uninstall java, reinstall, put in the new environment variables, etc.) but nothing is working. I have a feeling it has to do with being on Windows 8. When you load Java, you get the warning that Java for Windows 8 is only supported in desktop mode, not start screen mode.
Is the issue just that the version of Java we need (to run mods for Minecraft) won't work on a Windows 8?
Thanks for your help!

Hi there

An easy way of creating a W10 VM (or any other OS) of your RUNNING machine is simply to start up the VMWARE CONVERTER. You need to be in administrator mode.

Configure the target machine, - unclick DATA drives if you just want to start with creating the system. Remove the extra NIC's it generates and in about 30 mins you've got a VM with all your installed programs etc.

It's possible it might not boot my W10 build 9926) didn't boot first time so what I did was to set the W10 ISO I'd downloaded as a CD iISO image in the VMware config remembering to set it to connect at power on !!! and then BOOT to BIOS or FIRMWARE in the VM. Then simply do REPAR SYSTEM -then it all booted just fine.

Saves creating and installing everything again.

VMware converter -- for P2V (Physical to Virtual) FREE

http://www.vmware.com/uk/products/converter

Note - this also works for W7 / W8.1 etc -- so you could create a VM of your older OS'es -- see if everything still runs OK on them - then install W10 with your old OS'es as VM's. As always though BACKUP your ORIGINAL OS if installing a new one.

I'm using Windows 7 Professional as a 32 bit version. Now I want to install Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on my machine from my USB drive.

The problem is that my machine doesn't boot from the USB drive. Anyway, I've tried with a 32 bit version of Windows 7 on my USB drive. This works well, but not with a 64 bit version. Why it doesn't work? Just to be on the safe side, I've tested it several times with other USB drives and followd thoroughly the instructions(diskpart).

Answer:Create bootable USB drive for Windows 7 x64 on a x86 machine

Hello Coffee, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You can only create a 64-bit Windows 7 bootable USB flash drive if your current Windows 7 installation is also 64-bit.

You can create a 32-bit Windows 7 bootable USB flash drive if your current Windows 7 installation is 32-bit or 64-bit.

Sorry mate.

Its all about complication process, so there should be no problems as long you have a huge amount of storage to put for virtual images. Make your style unique and the result will be same at all.

I just reinstalled the Win 7 Pro operating system, using lenovo install disks, on my 3820/K1000m W530.  I may end up getting a 3840QM/K2000M W530, and wanted to know if I can just swap the disk I just made into the new machine, this avoiding the issue of re-creating the disk.  I have Windows Office 2013 on the thing. I was hoping to1) Deactivate Windows 2013 (and adobe creative suite) on the source machine from the source disk.2) Physically Install a clean Samsung 850 Pro 500 into the new target machine. 3) Put the source disk in a usb-based disk case and attach it to the target machine.4) Boot to a diskcopy program from the optical drive on the target machine.5) Copy the system disk, with all my ancillary programs and such, onto the target machine6) Restore the source disk to the source machine.7) Boot the target machine and (here's what I'm hoping) have the target machine validate/activate windows 78) reactivate office on the target machine, and reinstall the Adobe license9) reactivate office on the source machine I would then have two functional machines, a main (target) and a spare.  Will this work?  Or must I install win 7 from scratch? IF this is not possible, do the W530 Bioses have a windows s/n that is version specific? In other words, if I can dig up Windows Ultimate (I'd like to get bitlocker), can I install that instead of pro? Thanks! Jim

Answer:Can I create a system disk on one machine, and swap it into another?>

If it is a UEFI boot disk, there are technical problems in copying a boot disk to a different sized disk. I would guess that you will lose the office activation. You will end up with 2 machines with the same security descriptors (not good), so you will need to run sysprep to generate new ones on the new machine. After you copy the disks and can boot, navigate to c:\windows\system32\sysprep and execute sysprep.exe. Choose either reboot or shut-down for the first set of options and "out-of-box experience" for the second.  Sysprep is the tool used in a corporate environment where there is a need to use the same image on multiple machines.  It is also the last step when you install from Lenovo factory disks.

Hi, Ive been trying to get the following to work:-
1) Monitor a user session based counter on many deployed machines
2) To alert when that counter hits some defined value.
This may sound simple, and it is when you create the Alert manually on the machines when the user is logged on, but the problem is when you try and do this for multiple users who log onto that machine. The issue I found is that when you choose the WMI Counter,
and select 'ALL SESSIONS' it doesnt actually do that, but just selects all current session it can 'see' to include in the monitor. This looks to only be an issue when you create it as an Alert though, as when you create it as a Performance Counter Data Log
it will work and record all session information. In fact you can see what I mean by simply creating two examples using the Processor Counter.
1) Create a new Data Collector Set from Performance Monitor
2) Select to create manually
3) Choose 'Create data logs - Performance counter'
4) Select Processor and Instances of selected object to be 'All instances'
5) You will see it lists this as \Processor(*)\* as the performance counter
This time create a new Data Collector Set for an alert as follows:-
1) Select to create manually
2) Choose 'Performance Counter Alert' this time
3) Select Processor and Instances of selected object to be 'All instances'
4) This time you will see it lists all counters is can see at that time.
Of course the problem with this is that the 'Alert' is then only b... Read more

I have Windows XP installed on one Hard Drive and Windows 7 installed on a second Hard Drive (both are Sata Drives).

I am experiencing a problem that has got me baffled.
I have legal copies of windows7 and windows 8,at the moment windows 7 is installed and i wanted to install windows 8 on a separate drive (i have 5 in the pc) but when i put the disk in it does not give me the option of where to install it will only install on the (C) drive which means i loose windows 7.
I suspect it is a bio's problem but so far have been unable to find it.
I even used Acronis to recover a backup to another drive (E) and it installed but does not show up when i start the PC where earlier i would have the option which choose which copy to boot.

Any ideas please

Answer:Cannot create a dual boot

I guess these five drives are partitions of a single drive rather than physical drives? I think your problem relates to the crazy way Windows sets up a dual boot, always naming the system partition C, and always putting the boot files for both systems into the first partition, which is your Win 7 partition.

I would first try renaming your partitions with short but meaningful names and trying again, as I cannot remember whether the installation process uses only drive letters or also shows drive names, in which case you would be sure which partition you are installing to.

I not like to upgrade my OS but I want create dual boot with windows 7 home basic and embedded windows 8.1 industry pro.

1. can I possible to dual boot? if possible how to create it and what are changes(in BIOS and windows 7 settings) needs to make in my laptop?
2. I have pen drive and DVD, which is best for create dual boot with IOS file?
3. I have 100GB free logical partition. that is enough for embedded windows 8? if not how much need to increase?

Answer:how to create dual boot?

Well "windows 8.1 industry" is not really intended for private computers and I don't know if it would work there but :
Yes you can dual boot W7 and W8.1 providing you have all the drivers for it.
Pen drive is better and faster to install windows, dual boot or not. More flexible too.
100 GB is more than enough for win8.1 but depends of how many programs you need to install.

Question: create dual boot.

Hi Everyone.I hope ime in the right forum as this involves xp and 98se. Ille try to keep it short but it is a bit involved.
I have 3 pc,s. The one ime on now, online is xp home and is fine, not in the story. I have another xp home which developed a problem and started turning itself off at random, although the power supply fan carried on and the power light on the pc sometimes stays on.this got more and more frequent to the point where it hardly stayed on at all, allthough it would stay on in cmos/bios all day!!! Safe mode was ok but that clicks off at times now as well. I have tried a new power supply but no change, I even went and bought a new hard drive. 80g exactly the same as the original and while I was installing the system from the cd,s it was perfect!! I thought Great, fixed it. BUT as soon as it was completed, CLICK! off it went. Frustration isn't a strong enough word for it. Ime no expert but I thought what the heck and took the whole thing apart finally removing the motherboard to look for any damage or burnt components, cleaned the processor fan and heat sink and even removed the processor but cannot see anything wrong. Put it all back together and exactly the same.
Here's where my 3rd pc comes in. Its windows 98se and works perfectly but what I would like to do is use my 80g xp hard drive with the 98 system. Ive tried master and slave, but the 98 system didn't recognise it, ive tried various other methods but nothing works. Then I realised that window... Read more

I've been dual booting W7 and Linux for awhile now. Recently I've been wondering about doing a VM instead. What I'm wondering is, is one to be preferred over the other? What are the pros and cons of each? Both would allow me to keep W7, but use Linux for most internet work. This avoids the EOL problem lurking ahead in 2020. Both also let you stop fooling with the increasingly frustrating monthly updates, as you can keep your W7 install offline except for occasional software updates. For myself, I could use W7 as the base OS, and install Linux (Zorin or Mint) as the VM, and use that for the internet. One advantage I can see is that I can do both without having to reboot. Currently, if I'm on Linux and I want to use Windows to say, work on my music, I have to reboot, either to start the other OS on the same computer, or to wake-up my other computer, where I do most of my music. I use the older computer to test or play with music software. So I use them both. But maybe a VM makes more sense for both?

Answer:Virtual Machine vs Dual Booting

Both have advantages and disadvantages you have pointed out the disadvantage of a dual boot but the advantage is the two OS's both run with access to the full resources of the system. The need for not having to reboot is an advantage of the virtual route but the fact that the virtual OS will run with limited resources is a disadvantage

I think the choice is down to what resources you have available when the have loaded the host If you have enough to run the Virtual OS than the option is valid if not you're probably better off sticking to a dual boot

I've read many items relating to this, but none that addresses exactly what I want to do, so here goes. I presently have a dual-boot machine with the old XP system on the C drive and the new one on the G drive. That allowed me to continue to use the old system while the new was being built. Now that I'm happy with the system, I'd like to be able to remove the C drive for another purpose. I understand a bit about how the dual boot stuff works and the boot.ini file is on the C drive.

If I just remove the C drive, the first thing I'm not sure about is how the G drive will be treated. Will it remain the G drive and will the hardware boot from there OK ? Or - is there something missing from the G drive software that will have to be installed to allow the system to boot from there? There must be some sort of info somewhere that tells Win XP that it's really the G drive and not the C drive. Or - maybe I'm screwed and will have to live with the dual boot startup forever and just leave the C drive in place?

What's the best approach, given that I want to remove the existing C drive with the old system and just boot from the G drive (new system) in the future?

Answer:Undoing a dual boot XP machine

The problem is that the boot sector for both is on the C: drive.
You have several options.

Option one would be to leave the C drive, just delete the windows folder there and boot to the G drive and go to start/ run and type msconfig and on boot.ini tab click verify all boot paths. It should remove the invalid one.

Option two would be to copy the boot.ini file from the C: to the G: drive; remove the C: drive and change G to master .
Now you will need to boot to the Install cd and boot to the recovery console on it.
Once there at the command prompt you run the command
Fixboot
(you type fixboot and hit enter) this will create a boot sector on the drive.
Then you type
fixmbr
and hit enter
This will make a master boot record.
Then you should be able to boot to the G drive all by itself, (note that the G: will now be C or HD0 so the boot.ini for your C: will now be the valid path to boot to what was once G:)
Again once booted you can run msconfig and verify boot paths to remove the invalid entry.

The third would be to remove C: , set G: as master, boot to your install CD and choose to do a repair install.

Good day all,

Just a quick question. I've got a user on a machine that has a dual CPU mother board. (Not dual core, actually two separate CPUs). He is currently only using one of these. It's a 3.06 GHz Xeon.

My question is: can we install another processor rated for different speed, and have any hope of success?

TIA,

Milty

Not 100% sure but I would say no. I'd say they would have to be identical. You could always try it and post the results.

Answer:dual booting vista on an XP machine

Basically.....
If you have a separate partition (or disk section) for it. There is only one free application to do this, GParted. It should not delete anything, but make sure you backup before you try it, as there can be problems with partitioners. Then, install Vista on the new partition.

A much more detailed guide.

PLEASE HELP!!! I had originally installed Window 7 and have been running it with no problems at all. I thought some experience with Ubuntu would be advantageous to my overall computer knowledge and as a result attempted to install Ubuntu. The install process went horribly wrong and as a result my machine will not even let me load Windows 7 from the installation disk. It goes to the black screen where the Windows is loading files and upon completion the cloudy Windows stock image comes up with the mouse pointer and does nothing further. I have the hard drive hooked up in an alternate machine in preparation for data recovery but before I proceed into these untested waters I thought I should get some advice. I have posted problems on this site before and received invaluable advice. Any suggestions on how to proceed would be appreciated.

I would be using VirtualBox from sun and as far as i am aware, you can install programs on a virtual machine and use them normally. is this right?

Answer:dual boot or virtual machine?

Virtual Machine will not be as fast as just dual booting, because you are running another OS inside a OS, which creates a lot of overhead.

My question is a bit complicated, so please be patient while I explain what I need...

I have many machines behind a single firewall machine. The firewall machine is dual ported (2 NICs) and the network is segmented (192.168.0.x for the external segment and 192.168.1.x for the internal segment). Everything is wired, no wireless. The external segment connects to a router out to the Internet. The internal segment connect to a hub/switch which connects to all the other machines on the local LAN.

The firewall machine was running XP for many years, but the hardware was failing, and the OS needed to be upgraded. Done. We now have new hardware running Windows 7 Pro x64.

All of the machines behind the firewall were already running Window 7 Pro x64, only the firewall machine has changed.

OK, by turning on the appropriate services in the new firewall machine and enabling packet forwarding in the registry, it appears to be working. The machines on the local LAN can connect through the firewall machine to the Internet.

I want to use the Window 7 firewall software in the new firewall machine. It provides the security for the local LAN, all the other machine on the LAN are trusted and their Windows 7 firewalls are turned off.

To make this work correctly, the firewall machine needs to be actively connected to two networks, which it is, but here is where my problem begins. Windows 7 thinks both networks are public. I need the external network to be public, and the inte... Read more

Maybe this will help.

Unidentified Networks - Set as Private or Public

It might also help to define the two subnets in the advanced TCP/IP settings in IPv4 properties.

I would think that using a secondary router with a different subnet would work better for this.

I wouldn't expect Windows 7 networking to work the same as the old XP version as there were many changes to the network stack with Windows 7.

I just upgraded to W10 from W7 using the free upgrade from MS. All is well. I would like to entertain a dual boot scenario to put W7 back on my HD. I have created a new partition for it, however, W7, and all the apps that came with it, are on 4 recovery disks that came with my CTO. Would I be able to install W7 to the new partition using these 4 disks?

Thanks

I've been attempting to install Windows XP on a PC from ACER which has Windows 7 pre-installed. Problem is that I'm trying to install it but haven't got any spare partitions on HDD, although Disk Management in Win 7 says I've only got 3 partitions, whereas when I go to install WinXP, the setup screen is saying I've used up all available partitions (4). WinXP setup says I've got a partition which is only 1MB in size, but this doesn't show up in Disk Management in Win 7. I can't delete the 1MB partition because its a dynamic partition and doing so, WinXP setup is telling me if I delete that one 1MB partition, I will lose all the data on the other 3 partitions which contain the System Re-install files (on Partition2 totalling 14GB), the current install of Win 7 and other programs/data (on Partition4 which has a capacity of 266GB) and the System Recovery partition of 100MB which I understand is needed to ensure Win 7 works property. When going to install WinXP, it is telling me that I've got 265GB of unallocated space, but in Disk Management, that shows up as Drive D. I was originally thinking I could put WinXP on Drive D.

Anybody got any ideas?

I had the uninstallable FileFinder on Windows and finally managed to remove it following the instructions here: https://howtoremove.guide/how-to-uninstall-filefinder/ and using iOrbit uninstaller.

Running SpyHunter detector, I was told of the following threats:
Adware.download keeper
Adware.Surf and keep
Adware.Kozaka
PUP.Hao123 by Baidu
PUP.Ammyy Admin
PUP.Oxy Torrent
PUP.YoutubeAdBlocker
Adware.Vonteera
Adware.Lucky Leap

But when I went to Regedit was only able to find entries of the following, which I deleted:

Adware.Surf and keep
Adware.Kozaka
Adware.Vonteera

Then I came out of "Safe Mode with networking" and rebooted in the standard windows mode, and everything seemed fine. This was last night.

But today, clicking on different things on web pages is again unexpectedly opening new windows.

For some work that I am still doing after retirement I need a dual boot machine consequently my Windows 7 Ultimate lives alongside Ubuntu 12.04 with a shared data partition. Does anyone know if it will be safe to upgrade to Windows 10 without wiping Linux? I am still using Ubuntu 12.04 on this machine because there was some doubt about the safety of upgrading to 14.04.

Thank you.

Answer:Upgrade to Win10 on a dual-boot machine

Do you have Mini partition wizard installed? If not, you can get it the free version from Major Geeks not Cnet. I just need to see how your drive is partition. I need a screenshot uploaded that shows your partition to see if I can help you. Partition Wizard should have a screenshot selection in the menu.

Do you think you could install Ubuntu 15.04 on your system? They improved hardware support with a lot of systems.
Do you mind doing clean install for Ubuntu?
Do you want to test the preview of windows 10 or do you want to install the release of windows 10 when it comes out?

I know that this probably has been posted and asked to death , but i was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

I'm presently running a machine with Xp Pro and am in the process of building a new machine and would like to install Win 7 on the new drive that's coming with the box, but also keep my Xp installation to migrate folders and such over to Win 7 at my leisure and also be able to boot into Xp to run some programs on it.

What would be the steps i would be best taking to do this, and also would it give me the option at the boot screen to boot into either.

I also heard that it could mess up my restore points, not sure on both or one installation, is that true and how do avoid this?

Would i be best to move the Xp over first as normally don't you have to run a repair of Xp in a new box to get the new mobo to recognize the install? Then would i unplug that drive and install a fresh copy of 7 onto the new HD?

Thank you to all for any information forthcoming that will make this install run smooth for me.

Gord

Answer:New machine and wanting to Dual Boot Win Xp and Win 7 on 2 drives

While it may be possible to put the XP HDD in a new box and get it to recognize the different mobo, personally I'd prefer a clean XP install.

My method for dual boot on 2 HDDs - check which F key gets to the boot menu (so you can select which HDD to boot from). Then with just one disk connected, install XP. When everything's checked and working, disconnect 1st drive and connect 2nd. Install Windows 7 on 2nd drive. When that's OK, connect both disks. Reboot and go into BIOS to set the default OS/HDD eg set to normally boot W7. Then when you need XP, use the F key to access the boot menu and select the XP disk.

If the 2 HDDs are different brands, its easier to identify them in the boot menu.

HI,

I have Win 10 x 32 activated for a while and now have Win 10 x 64 on another drive in the same both as a dual boot.

The new 64 install has just asked me to Activate it.

I need access to the original x 32 version as it has my programs, shortcuts on it so I know what to move to the x64 one.

Will I lose access to the 32 if I active the 64 or can I have to two going at the same time.

Thanks

I was wondering if anyone knows how to change boot loader Operating system on a Dual-Boot (Windows XP & Suse 10)

When the machine boots, it gives me the options to choose between SUSE 10 & Windows Xp for 10 seconds or less, and if i miss it, it would load SUSE 10 Automatically.

Any idea how to change this??

Answer:Booting preference on Dual-Boot machine

Start Suse ...

click on the Kmenu
click System then YaST
Yast will askes for root password here, after Yast Control Center opens up
click System again
then Boot Loader Configuration
there you can set your timeout default, what OS boots first and a few other bits-n-bobs

Have fun!

Hi, I have a dual boot XP Pro setup on my boot drive and I want to reinstall my E drive while preserving my C drive. I've done a couple of Windows 7 reinstalls but never an XP reinstall. I'm just a little nervous about the dual boot setup, I don't want to lose my C partition.
I have a Macrium image of the drive and also the partitions, in case I botch it . I have also backed up a number of files from My Documents etc. in case I need some of them later.
What pitfalls should I be wary of?
I have a Service Pack 2 CD, Academic Edition.

Answer:Reinstalling single XP Pro on a dual boot XP Pro machine

OK, I went ahead boldly with confidence & it was pretty straight forward, seems to have worked out ok as far as basic set up is concerned. I used the wrong disk, I could only find one of the two, so instead of using the cd key I had previously used for that OS, I had to use the key that was on the disk sleeve, so it's possible I've now used the same key for both setups so I guess I'll be getting a message from Microsoft once I set up my internet connection.

Firstly - this forum is the best. I have had amazing help here. Thanks again...

OK I have a couple of questions please:

1. I have a FUJITSU MHZ2160BH G2 2.5 ATA Hard Drive which is an moving parts hard drive. Id like to replace this with a Solid State much large hard drive. Are all 2.5 Hard Drives the same in terms of the generic size? I.e. do I simply just screw the back of the laptop, take out the old and put in the new?

2. I have a three partitions that I would like to clone. I have a dual boot, Windows 7 and Ubuntu laptop with shared hosting. Is Clonezilla the best for this do you think? Its a little complicated in that Id like to copy the existing hard drive and then in the new hard drive increase the partitions by 15 gig each - and then copy the 3 partitions in.

Hope that all makes sense!!!!!!!

THANKS AGAIN - U guys are all very friendly and knowledgeable!

Answer:Cloning Dual Boot Machine and Question on SSD

ad1) answer is yes. Just be aware that there are also some (rare) 1.8" SSDs.

ad2) for cloning I would prefer Paragon or Acronis. But if you do not make an original installation of Win7 on the SSD, you have to make all the preparations yourself - e.g. alignment, shutting off Defrag, etc. Some more info is here, else ask.

Answer:Activate Win 10x64 on same machine as Win 10 x32 as dual boot

I assume you upgraded the x32 from a previous version. But how did you get the x64 version? Unfortunately no way to activate the x64 without a new key. you can not upgrade a 32bit version to x64, It must be a fresh install of 64.

I just purchased this pre-built machine:

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7375900

Acer Aspire AM3970-UR14P DT.SJYAA.003 Desktop PC

I'm attempting to order a graphics card upgrade ( probably an affordable Nvida GT 650 ti . Obviously the card will consume some space due to the fan. I'm trying to figure out if the card ( or a similar dual slot PCIx card) will fit onto the motherboard. I know from past experience that a lot of non-custom built PCs have little to no room for expansion.

I've searched all over the net about this particular model number of Acer Aspire and can come up with no information about the motherboard to check for myself.

Would anyone happen to know where i can find info about the motherboard for this particular model of Acer Aspire desktop?

** Also, i do intend on removing the included radeon card.

Answer:Will a dual slot graphics card fit in my machine?

It is hard to tell if it would fit the case, but the specs state that your computer only has a 300W Power Supply and that definitely will not work with the card you list.

How do i Install
MAC OS X(snow leapord) & XP professional in a Single Machine??
plzz Guide me

i want to install in this Machine

Answer:Solved: Dual operaTing system in a Machine

You can only install Mac OS on Apple hardware. Even if it would be possible to circumvent the hardware restriction, you would be violating the EULA of the OS. Since that is illegal, if it is possible, we can't help you here.

Sorry!

You can, however, legally dual-boot Mac OS and Windows on Apple hardware. You may want to investigate that option if running OS X is important to you.

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone can help me with Installing XP SP3 on my Vista machine. Here are the specs;
MSI GX720
Intel [email protected] 2.4 Ghz
Intel(R) ICH9M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller
The problem i am having is when i boot from the XP DVD it doesn't recognize my HDD. I tried a program called nLite to integrate the drivers into XP (pre-install). I am not sure exactly which driver to use so i just put all the drivers in that came with Intel's Chipset Device Installer, made a new XP DVD with the drivers integrated and it still won't work.....I also put the drivers onto a USB Flash Drive and USB HDD and tried performing the F6 method but it doesn't detect those devices. So i am at my wits end, I'm stuck, if anyone can help it would be greatly appreciated. Thank You
