I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: Reasonable priced Windows 7 sound card

Take a quick look at this post

Sounds like you might be able to download the XP drivers and then right-click and run in compatibility mode using XP SP2 as your choice.

Might be worth a quick try.

Hi all,
I am on dial up connection now, i pay $20 a month for unlimited use to another internet provider on top of my normal Telstra bill and its been ok as far as $$ & speed for what i have been using it for, but my new computor will have a DVD & CD in it and i would like to be able to sometimes download movies and songs with it and the dialup i think will be far to slow for that type of use.
Its not only that, but when i use the internet on the same line as phone calls, i am missing a lot of calls and others in the house are getting pretty irrritated with me being always on the net.
I am a bit restricted as far as money goes because i am on a diability pension,
so i am looking for a reasonable priced provider that will suit my needs without going to overboard with the prices and will keep the phone clear for all other normal phone calls.
I have been looking at a few differant deals but i see that if you go over a certain amount of m'bytes they get stuck into you for excess, which looks like a bit of a trap to me.
I would even be happy with normal dialup speeds during the day [ when i can get on it] and downloading stuff at off peak times or during the nights.
Or am i asking for to much for to little?
Thanks in advance for any idea's.

Answer:Any Aussies know of a reasonable priced cable connection provider

Try Optus ADSL I think they have packages that include your phone and some free local calls. I'm not sure about ADSL but with cable when you exceed your limit they don't charge extra they just limit you to dialup speed.

Hi All

Just joined Tenforums and was wondering if anyone might be able to direct me to some info about graphics cards. I have the hardware below that runs Win 7 Ultimate fine, but I'm planning on doing a fresh install of Win 10 Pro on this PC:
Gigabyte GA-X58-USB3 (Circa 2011 - Has PCI Express x16 slot)
Radeon X1650
Acer S27HL Monitor

I've already run the "Get Windows 10" compatibility report and it's said that my old (Radeon X1650 256MB PCI-E GDDR3) card isn't compatible...not surprising as neither AMD or MS have drivers for it any longer.

I'm not really a gamer but would like to use the PC for watching films at a good resolution. Anyone know of a sub ?80 card that might fit the bill?

Many thanks

Something like this should work. Not a gamer either so others can chime in.

It is going to be my first build and for ?533 for their no-brainer offer, but it doesn't come with a gpu,and iv'e got ?150 left in my budget for it.So as title says ,1 gt660TI or 2 gt640's and out ov those what model would you suggest? Please help I'm a little lost I fully understand every other componant but graphics cards are a bit ov a puzzle with different makes, different specs but it's called the same card ie gtx660ti.Help

Answer:One higher priced gpu or 2 lower priced cards on sli ?

Single-parameter benchmarks are dubious, but see:

PassMark Software - Video Card Benchmark Charts - Video Card Model List

Look like a 660 ti would be better than two GT 640 cards in SLI.

I'm not sure whether anyone manfactures GT 640 cards with SLI connectors. nVidia lists a configuration that supports SLI, but my favorite US web dealer,, doesn't sell any. The GT 640 models made by eVGA clearly don't do SLI.

Is there any place that you can get a 660 ti for ?150? Looks more like a ?250+ card. (Doesn't help that it's a brand new model.)

Best of luck.

Is this a reasonable graphics card?

ATI RADEON 9800 Pro 256Mb AGP

It will be used with a Gigabyte 8VM800PMD-775 mobo

on a 2.8ghz celeron with 1gb Ram, 200gb hdd

Answer:Is this a reasonable graphics card?

How much does it cost?
I recommend a 6600GT video card. It should costly almost the same, and you get a lot more performance.

The two bad things are these:

a) You must have a good, quality 300-350 power supply, from a good, well-known manufacturer, with at least 20 A on the 12V rail, in order to have a stable computer.

b) The performance of a 9800 PRO or a 6600GT will be limited by your current CPU (is it a Celeron D or a Celeron?).

Good luck!

I believe that I have an on-board graphics card installed on my computer. Previously I was able to use Google Earth, but for some unknown reason I was no longer able to use this programme. Various alternatives was advised via Google help and error messages, but none seem to work.My remaining alternative (according to Google) is to get a 'better' graphics card.Any suggestions for a straight forward replacement. Not into high speed gaming or fancy high capacity 3 D's. Something cheap and simple, with possible links would be ideal.Final question: Is it possible to fit an additional graphics card to on-board system!.

Answer:Cheap and reasonable graphics card

Yes it is possible for you to have additional graphics, you will have to disable your onboard graphics once you have a new graphics card.Do you know what expansion slots you have available so that suggestions for graphics cards can be suited to your needs.

I'd like to know everyone's thoughts on something I've come across in some research.

I heard that if you're going with 2 SLI video cards such as:

You may get better performance if you go with a newer card priced around the same as those 2.

What are your thoughts? 2x for SLI or one card?

Looking for recommendation for low priced video display adaptor upgrade for old integrated . I have a Pavilion HP p7-1054 Desktop.  It has performed well, but I think the integrated legacy display adaptor is limiting some editing software that i am trying to use. The old integrated adaptor is an AMD Radeon HD 4200 which is no longer supported by AMD.   They even said that it runs best with windows 7.   So, software written for newer versions and for later developer tools are limited. So,  my preference would be to hear from someone who has updated the same old integrated display adaptor with good results. But, I will be glad to hear from anyone who knows of a good upgrade for this product between 50 and 100 bucks.  Don't do any gaming, but I want to use one photo editor that the makers say is built to use a card with larger memory and at least open GL 3.3.   Of course, most newer cards are already up to 4.x. Thanks.

I received the new Thinkpad x61s yesterday, ordered 3 weeks ago. I had chosen the Intel wireless wifi link 4965AGN for it, but when I received it yesterday I found they actually installed a 4965AG. This is shown in all the places: the system information, the device manager, as well as the sticker on the bottom of the laptop. I have created screen shots to show the information, though I don't see anyway to attach the files here. I called Lenovo yesterday as soon as I found the problem. I thought the two obvious solutions would be to either send back the laptop for replacement of the wireless card by IBM/Lenovo, or to have them send me the correct card and I replace it by myself. Since the model is still being offered on sale, they certainly have the 4965AGN card. I was transferred back and forth on the phone between various depts. The last rep yesterday said they couldn't replace the card for me (why? "because it's just not how we do it." Instead they do put the wrong card?), nor can they send me a replacement card (said it would void warranty if I install it myself, which contradicts another rep. Could someone please confirm either way?). He said I had to either return the laptop for refund or get credit for the difference between the two cards. Neither of these is what I would like to accept. And I find it neither reasonable nor necessary. I called them today again. The rep I got today looked at my order and claimed what I ordered was exactly what I have received! He cl... Read more

Answer:Lenovo messed up my wireless card on my new laptop and refuses a reasonable solution?!

I understand your frustration, but there is a thing I don't get it. By the fact that Intel doesn't have pcie network adapter card model 4965AG. They have only 4965AGN, which is the one you are supposed to get, and 3945BG/ABG for 802.11b/g or 802.11a/b/g consecutively. I suspect 4965AG is typo or something? but this way it's pretty hard for Lenovo to believe you as well. The question is how you can identify your network card then? If device manager really says that, you may like to update driver.I recommend you get into this card properties in device manager and check for Hardware Ids, for 4965AGN it should be VEN_8086&DEV4230&SUBSYS_11108086. If it's really a wrong one, I don't see that you couldn't get a replacement. The worst case is you may have to ship your unit back to repair center, I guess. note: I'm not related to Lenovo in anyway! I was pissed about their service too/ Edited: I was totally wrong. There is 4965AG. It's basically the same one with 802.11n disabled. However, it's not the same part number. 42T0865, 42T0867, 42T0869, 42T0871, 42T0905 : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n enabled)42T0873, 42T0875, 42T0877, 42T0879, : Intel PRO/Wireless 4965AGN (11n disabled) First, you have to check this part number on the box to see if it matches 11n disabled. Then check with your order and it's time to call them again. Message Edited by sipp11 on 01-21-2009 01:56 PM

I have a brand new W530 with the 500 GB HD -- 445 GB actual total space in C: ("Windows7_OS"), including about 85 GB of OS, pre-installed applications, and Lenovo bloat-ware).  I plan to create a separate user-data partition by stealing space from the OS partition, call it E:, and to re-direct user Documents, Pictures, etc. directories plus the Outlook PST file there.  Thus C: will be reserved mainly for Windows, Page File, Crash Dump, Restore Points, and new software installation. Any thoughts about a reasonable division of drive space between these two partitions?  Coming from Windows XP 32bit on a much smaller HD, I have little idea what to expect in terms comfortable space requriements for Windows 7 64bit.  (I realize I can re-size the partitions later, but it seems best to start with realistic allocations...) -- JCW2

Answer:What is a Reasonable Tradeoff Between System and Data Space in Windows 7 64bit?

It is hard to comment without some idea how the machine will be used. Some applications are not very well behaved and install on the c: drive regardless of what you do. Some functions, like the briefcase functions in windows 7 are harder to get off c:, although it can be done. (I got it right the second time I tried) If you share files using briefcase, you end may up with most of your data on c:. I decided I wanted to boot from an SSD, but I needed more data, so I put in a 256GB mSATA drive and moved my boot partition there. I used my entire HD for data. That worked out well for me.

Hi, I desperately need help with the following issue.
Well I just purchased a Sony Vaio VGN-Z790J and it had Windows 7 preloaded on it and the audio symbol in the system tray had a red cross and I couldn't locate the sound card in Device Manager. I have tried everything possible, re-installing the specifed drivers from the Sony Website, div x diagnostic, device manager and still the Sound Card is not being detected and there is still an audio symbol with a red-cross in it.
After spending endless hours to find a solution on the web, I decided to use the Windows Vista recovery discs to return the notebook back to its factory conditions. It took 4 hours and still there is no audio and the sound card is not being detected. I ended up calling Sony to seek some assistance but they were no help and they suggested to book it in for repairs. However, since there is no waranty left, I can't afford to do this. Furthermore, I have also enquired about a new mother board and i was quoted $700-$800 - once again I can't afford this.
Can you guys suggest anything, or has anyone had a similar issue that they were able to solve. I really need help and assistance would be much appreciated.Thanks.

By the way now the system has Windows 7 64 bit.

Windows 7 Ultimate RC build 7100 is what you should be running. There are no service packs for pre-release OS's from Microsoft. Did you install Windows 7 on this Dell or did someone do it for you? Your installed memory is much too low for Vista, not to mention Windows 7. If your system won't run Vista properly, DO NOT install Windows 7 pre-release

I purchased a computer via CraigsList and all is fine with it bar one thing ? I haven?t been able to get the sound working on it. I don?t think it?s an issue of being sold a faulty unit ? the guy selling it was the father of the owner, who has been overseas for a year and the dad simply wanted to clear it out to make some room.

Initially I thought it was a sound card issue, and swapped cards around and did virtually everything I could think of to make it work. Nothing. Then I went backwards and forwards trying to find if there was any program ob board that was muting the sound. Nothing. I looked at the device manager, which said that all was okay. I downloaded the latest drivers. I reinstalled Windows. I tried using the headphone jack, another set of speakers. I did everything to try and isolate and locate the issue. ! I still could not get it to work. With all of this I still had not even figured out whether it was a software or hardware issue. Needless to say, it?s been a very frustrating time. The only saving grace was that I finally managed to coax some sound out of the motherboard?s RCA jack, so at least I can hear something when I?m using the computer ? just not from the soundcard itself.

A couple of days ago I finally made some headway ? purely by accident. I was working my way through each of the jacks again on the sound card, testing out some idea or other with the speakers disconnected from the onboard audio, when I realized that the volume was too low on th... Read more

Hey, I need a bit of help

I'm running a Dell inspiron laptop, if this helps, but I recently had what I believe was a virus on here, my internet security (McAfee and Windows Defender) were both being turned off from time to time and I had to manually turn them back on.
Then my laptop started slowing down so much it took 3 hours to complete 12% of a scan with only that running. I decided to do a system restore to about 2 weeks ago, hoping to fix the problem.

After 4 hours of it saying the same thing whilst trying to complete the restore (Windows is repairing the registry), I decided it was time for some intervention as it seemed to be stuck in some never ending loop.
I got the recovery CD and then turned my laptop off mid-restore, which it didn't like. Upon turning it back on I only got a blue screen and mouse, but I got it to boot from the CD and did a boot recovery and Disk Check. All is working fine, apart from I am left now with no sound.
(On a side note, the boot start isn't the same as before and it says that the Autochk is missing, Skipping Autocheck)

I've checked the device manager, which is telling me everything is working fine, apart from in sounds it cannot play a test sound.
I've run a Dell Support Center check, which told me everything was running fine apart from a PCI Family Bus Port 5 - 2495, which failed to run the test, but windows again was saying that this is working fine.
Apart from the fact that my laptop now has no sound, the only other thing pointing... Read more

Good Afternoon, Gentlemen,
I am sorely, at least I think so, of the sound advice that you hand out, on a very regular basis.
I have had an Acer Aspire One 722-C62kk with an 11.6” screen and 4GB for a couple of years. And it has done – and is doing – the job I wanted it to do; namely to take on holidays with us so we can keep in touch with friends whilst on the holiday. But we are just back from 2 weeks in Lanzarote and I must admit that I have found it s-l-o-w. I do not know anything about chips and, therefore, would be very grateful if someone could recommend a notebook with a faster chip in it. This is where I will probably annoy some of you: I would like one that is 5 to 10 times faster!! Also I am not looking for a new notebook – these all seem to come with Windows 10 which I do not like – but a second hand one with Windows 7 preferably 64Bit Home Premium or similar with USB 3.0 port(s). I am quite willing to go to £100, but for a good one am willing to stretch up to £200. If a company that trades in second hand notebooks has options and any of you know a reasonably reliable one that would also be helpful.
I know I am being picky, but at my time of life I am getting more and more specific and that is why I am asking you gentlemen.
Any and all – no matter how rude – replies will be very gratefully received.

Hey all,

I've been running my system under full load for twenty minutes.

I've got RMClock, CPU-Z and ATITool open to monitor, and I'm also using Orthos to stress my RAM and my CPU.

LeadTek 7950GT TDH 256MB -- 90 degrees
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4GHz -- 48 degrees [won't let me overclock yet, it's running at stock speeds with a Zalman heatsink].
Transcend 1066 2 x 1GB -- 64 degrees

These temperatures seem all right for twenty minutes of full load? I'm scrambling to find a VGA heatsink at a local store, but I've been told a graphics card of this power can safely handle temperatures of up to 100 degrees.

Hi all,

I'm currently looking into buying a new server for the company I'm interning at. The issue is I'm somewhat clueless about IT in general, so I'm concerned an offer I've received for a Dell PowerEdge T430 server which I've pasted below is a rip off. The price I've been quoted is $4020,10.

Here are the specs:
"Server Dell PowerEdge T430 8B, (1)*Intel Xeon E5-2630v4 Processor (2.2GHz, 10C, 25MB, 8.0GT/s QPI, 85W), 32GB (2x16GB) 2400MHz RDIMM, PERC H330, DVD+/-RW, (2)*1TB SATA 6Gbps 7.2k 3.5" HD Hot Plug (up to 8x3.5"HDD), Broadcom 5720 GbE Dual Port on board, IDRAC8 Ent., (2)*750W, No Rails, 3y NBD"

Any advice would be very much appreciated!

Also if it helps the initial uses of the server would be secure data storage, hosting an email service for 12 staff members, and if possible setting up a hybrid disaster recovery solution, for instance linking the service to a cloud based service like Microsoft Azure.

If anyone out there can suggest a cheaper and viable alternative that would be ace!

Best regards,

Question: Reasonable prices?

What would be a reasonable price to "reimage" a machine?
(ie wipe off all the trojans/adware/spyware)

Reimage including databackup and a reinstall of the os and drivers.

Data backup being a loose sense of the term and including just music, photos, documents, email, and favorites, and just to be nice also throwing on a few apps that are essential...itunes, aim, firefox, spybot, antivirus of choice.

I know geek squad's prices...and they are...about on par I'd say for the amount of time it takes to do all of the above but what do you guys think?

I keep hearing people who have fairly modern PC's (although perhaps lacking a good graphics card) talking about buying a PS3. I would like to tell them that they should really consider spending $200 to $250 for a new video card and using their PC to play games thereby saving themselves the much larger cost of a PS3.

Is this reasonable advice? If they were to upgrade an Intel P4 (3.2 MHz with adequate memory, hard drive, sound quality, etc.) by buying a fairly good quality video card, would that put the machine into a comparable quality such that it would run most games available for the PC such that it would compare fairly well to those same games running on the PS3?

It doesn't have to be extremely high quality. I'd just like to know if it would be reasonably accurate to say that upgrading a fairly modern PC (with a P4 CPU - not a Celeron) with a good quality video card would put it into roughly the same level of performance for playing games as the PS3.

I'm looking for a reasonably priced UPS that can maintain power to a PC(MAX: 850W) and monitor(Rated:22W) for enough time for them to be properly shut down. I'd also like the UPS to have the feature that allows it to automatically shut down the PC when the UPS loses power from mains.
I haven't set a price in stone but I know I don't want to go over £100 and I'd like lower if possible. The UPS would have to have a minimum of two standard UK plugs.
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

I'm running at the minute on XP. But i dont have the original disk as the pc i have was second hand and only came with the system BIOS disk.

I've bought windows 7 and would like to upgrade but my only issue is the sound card. I have a C Media Wave CMI8738/C3DX sound card pre-installed. I cant tell you if it's built into the motherboard or what. But the windows 7 advisor tells me it's not compatible, no surprise, the card dates back to 2002!! Is there anyway of getting an update or anything for this sound card to work on windows 7 without me having to go out and buy a new sound card???

I have an old XP computer which is still going strong. I recently tried to upgrade it to Windows 7 but there were problems with the product key and it was unsuccessful. I then had to reformat the hard drive before reinstalling Windows XP from my original installation discs up to SP3 level. This worked okay but I am now finding that there are problems with the sound card. There never was a separate installation disc for this and I assume that the built in drivers handled it. I have looked at Device Manager and there is a yellow question mark over "Audio Device on High definition Audio Bus" (incidentally all other devices also have question marks over them). I have tried reinstalling a driver from the Windows installation disc, however this was not found. I have no idea what make of sound card is installed so do not know what driver to look for on the internet. I know it is a long shot as this is an old system now but has anyone got any ideas how to fix this?

I think I've found my own solution. I found I had a disc called "Intel 915G chipset Support" which had a Realtec audio driver. I have reinstalled this and the audio system is now working again! My confusion was caused by not realising what chipset support meant but among other things it covers the sound card.

Answer:Best Sound Card for Windows 7

Many say that the onboard sound has become very good in the last few years and a sound card isn't needed. Creative's fiasco with poor driver/tech support and other dubious actions hasn't helped.

However there are some good options and depending on what you want to do such as Asus, etc. One compnayy that I really like is HT Omega. I don't know where to link for the UK nor do I know if you can purchase or if they fit your budget but here is a link for you to at least become familiar with their offerings:

Answer:windows 7 and sound card

Hi tdun2459 and welcome to TSF.

This will be down to a couple of things. When you installed Windows 7 over XP (which would have required a Clean install) you would have overwritten the drivers for the card, which even if you still have them, were written for XP and not Windows 7. Also, if you look at the Dell site, Windows 7 isn't supported at all. In fact only XP is. Sometimes you can get lucky and have decent functionality for system that down't support Windows 7, but there will be limitations.

What audio card are you running?

Common complaint, I am working with Windows 7 on a Dell Optiplex 755, but teh issue is with the System Volume setting. When I go to the audio mixer and do the test and configuration, the SoundMax audio level is loud and clear. The problem is with the Windows system settings somewhere, is there a limiter or cap setting in teh registry that I can set to maximum?

I know that it is not the standard slide bars/levels but somewhere that Windows 7 Professional is cutting the volume on any Windows application. The drivers are fine, if I invoke the card directly it will blast the sound out. But in any application it is too soft.

Answer:Windows 7, sound limit, audio card is loud Windows is soft

As you have a Dell, for proper operation you need to use the Dell supplied driver. I used to do a lot of support on the Dell forums and we found that non-Dell sound drivers either did not work or did not work correctly.

Here is the Dell Vista sound driver, it will also work with Windows 7 as it is just "Vista improved". It is for both the 32 bit and 64 bit OS versions. Drivers and Downloads | Dell [United States]

This is a first step. If its still not working correctly after installing the driver, the next thing is what programs you are using that are "low"? If you click on the speaker icon in the notification area (lower right) you can set the system volume level.

A long tale of woe that ends with some questions. Please bare with me in the background explanation.

For over a year I've been having occasional flurries of crashes, hangs and (rarely) BSODs. Months would go by with no problem, then dozens of crashes or hangs in a week. The event logs and rare dumps have not been helpful. People here said it sounded like hardware problem, but no diagnostics I ran could find a problem.

I took it to a pc repair shop which could find no hardware problem (and of course it would not crash or hang for them). The suggested (as did people on this forum) that it probably was ZoneAlarm Internet Security. They installed the Kaspersky Internet Security product (for a fee, of course) and said that should fix the problems. 2 days later it froze 3 times and did automatic reboots 5 times.

I took it back. It still wouldn't crash or hang for them. They said Windows probably needed to be reinstalled - that my update from Win7 Home to Pro corrupted something. Rather than mess up the installation again I asked them to do it (for a fee, of course).

During their attempts to reinstall Windows it started crashing for them. They succeeded on their 3rd attempt, ran some more tests, checked the configuration, and found problems with the ram. They said ram I had was incompatible with the mother board and buggy, but the problems could not be detected by the diagnostics. They also said they had to reinstall Windows a 4th time because the 3rd reinstallation ... Read more

Answer:Reasonable explanation for crashes?

OCZ is high quality, but it is also one of the least compatible memories on the market (meaning it works properly with the fewest hardware configurations)
I use it personally and have for years with no complaint. ...and certainly without the problems you describe, though I always verify the motherboard/ram compatibility before I purchase a motherboard.

If the ram is actually bad it can cause any number of seemingly unrelated problems and errors. Since basically everything processes through the ram and it can be only one stick or one specific memory address on a stick that actually causes the problem. It's possible this bad address can go for months without being used until a specific set of circumstances pops up.

About 2 minutes in total here. This is NOT a serious problem, just more of an annoyance which is intriguing me.
With 4gb ram, a reasonable dual processor and graphics card, one would expect a reasonably good performance whatever the case.
My automatic startup consists of just Avast AV, Java, and Malwarebytes although l also get additional icons on the taskbar for the Network and Sharing Center and Action Center.
I use Firefox as my main browser.
I also use SuperAntiSpyware, CCleaner, and Defraggler reasonably frequently, so l know that my system is clear of any junk, malware, spyware, and that no viruses are present.
I fire the system up in the morning, bring up Firefox and all is fine, and reasonably quick.
Do a fair amount of downloading using the MiPony download manager to access rapidshare files, but with my crap connection, the max download speed seems to hover around the 280kbs mark.
I may also have two FF sessions on the go, as well as the downloading, so whatever l do after that seems to really slow the system down.
I have even run ConvertX at the same time as all of the above and the system came to a near grinding halt.
Now l know that all of the above are processor/ram hungry but surely with my specs the computer should more than cope?
Maybe l'm missing something obvious or my dual processor system just cannot cope with more than two ram hungry programs running at the same time.
Has anyone got any ideas or do l just have to live with it.

I have four rather old HDDs that are either not recognized by the system or that cause computer shut down when connected.

Is it reasonable to attempt to repair these? It is my understanding that the majority of all HDD failures are electrical and not mechanical. If this is true, then I would conclude that most problems are caused by the replaceable control board on the HD.

BTW I have a circuit board on order to attempt the repair of a 250GByte Seagate HD (a Barracuda 7200.10).

This HD seems to be an ideal candidate for home repair because it immediately shuts down the computer when power is applied. There is a direct short from the HDs' 5 volt input pin to ground. That short circuit exists even when the board is removed from the HD.

Obtaining an exact replacement seems to be the trick. I 'think' I have done that.

Answer:Is It Reasonable/Sensible to Attempt to Repair a HDD

It's not as simple as replacing the PCB on most modern drives, you may also have to move the original ROM chip or firmware that contains the specific drive parameters to the new PCB. Unlike older drives, new drives are all slightly different and unique. With the 7200.10 a PCB swap may work because its an older drive.

edit: maybe there are just rear stacking ports? The fronts must just be sfp 1 GbE?

Answer:10 GbE starting to become reasonable for home?

ProCurve 2900s have normal gig ports for connecting to clients.

I subscribe to Norton 360 but have got the trojan Antivirus XP 2008 with its annoying porn popups and messages. Via the chat facility, Norton advisors have removed part of the problem remotely but the popups have come back and other irritations, like slow running remain. They have now escalated my call to their virus specialist and want to charge me £70 for a detailed consultation plus check of the PC and clean up. Am I being reasonable thinking that Norton 360 should have stopped the trojan in the first place and it's a bit much having to pay them to clean up. The adviser was quite aggressive saying that I should have this done straight away otherwise I might spread the virus on the internet and my ISP will cut me off.I'd be grateful for views on Norton's stance.

Answer:Antivirus XP & Norton 360 - Reasonable?

Do a quick Google for "Antivirus XP 2008", have a look at the first hit from bleepingcomputer, should be able to sort it yourself.Google is your friend.

I wanted to hear some opinions about the situation in the office I work in.

Recently we changed accounting software and my advice to change to Office 365 was rejected. Still all 15 employees want their emails to be safe and backed up.
Some employees don't delete their emails, so I end up with approximately 10 GB PST-file size per year per user. Of course I split them year by year. The problem is that they want to keep even pst files from 5 or more years ago. Always available. My idea is now, that I make a one time backup copy of recent years and a daily backup of the actual year.
I made some tries already with EaseUS. But I'm not satisfied.
I'd prefer not to schedule it and leave it up to the employee to decide when to make the backup. So, let's say the employee leaves earlier for some reason why leaving the PC on until 7 pm or so? Also a power cut could prevent that scheduled backup entirely from happening.
Here's a list of what I need the backup software to be able to do:

- Start the whole backup process with a double-click on an icon (on the desktop). EaseUS needs more steps incl. always having to set the Shutdown option manually.
- On the destination file storage or NAS I want to overwrite the previous file, not to create version after version. Or even better: Create a new version but delete the old version afterwards. PSTs are really a hard case since you can't really make incremental backups. I also doubt that some employees will understa... Read more

IPS, Gsync, and budget don't belong in the same sentence. This makes 3 threads you haven't defined this budget so nobody can really answer your questions.

Yeah, so i'm looking for a cheap windows 8.1 tablets at a cost around 200$ and 250$.
I want a tablet for watching videos and gaming but at a pretty low cost because of my budget and I don't know where to search for them. The size of the tablet I want is 10.1" and it should contain about 64GB of memory, 2-, or 3GB of ram and a good processor.
Is it too much for 200-250$? Should I have bigger budget? I really would appreciate an answer that includes some specs of the tablet like battery's mAh rate, size and resolution, processor name and clockspeed and of course the price and name of the tablet.

A recent report by HKEPC shows that Intel will be cutting the prices of certain key SKUs to make them and the price-point they're targeting, more competitive. For instance, until now available for over US $500, and replaced by the Core i7 960, the Core i7 950 (LGA1366, 3.06 GHz, quad-core) chip will be placed at the $294 price-point, displacing the Core i7 930 2.80 GHz chip.

Answer:Core i7 950 to be Priced Under $300 This August

Well with the i7 975 Extreme in my PC and not being able to upgrade to any iX chip in my M17x-r1 I will have to think about selling the r1 and finding an r2.

Answer:Looking for opinions on this priced custom PC

Everything looks good, except perhaps the Mushkin memory, which is hardy but not as fast in actual performance as you might wish.
The prices are inflated over what I pay... The Samsung DVD drive is $19 to $20. Memory can be found $12... etc... but the final price is about right.

Now I have got the free Sothink Movie DVD Maker and it works fine but in between "sections" it flashes up an annoying ad for the Pro version it is $40 and for the amount I will use it for a tad expensive.

So any ideas welcome

Is it DVD Shrink your using ? if it is, it can save the ripped files, Video_TS & Audio_TS to where ever you want ( I use 'Desktop' then I use ImgBurn to put them onto a DVD.

I need to get myself a new optical drive and I'm at a loss as to what kind to get. I know that DVD would be the best, as I do allot of gaming and hate having to switch cds during an install. It would be great if the drive did not have a tray. Also, if someone could run through the specs one should look at when looking at DVD drives, that would be great!!

thanks a bunch : )

Answer:In market for a reasonably well priced DVD drive

You want the drive to be able to support dual-layer and write both DVD-R and DVD+R. A DVD-ROM is a useless purchase in our time.

Why are computers so over priced?

I got a laptop in 2010 a 640 hard-drive ,4 GB RAM and AMD phenom 2 X3 for $400 and a desktop computer for $500 1TB hard-drive , 4 GB RAM and four core processor !!!

Yet 70% computers today are still at that price with same spects and no SSD ,HDMI or blue ray only on some selected units.

I hear from people most brand computers very much so best buy ,office place or office related stores ,walmart and so on the computer are three years old. That only if you order parts and put the computer together you get more for the price.

We are talking almost 5 years from when I got computer yet price with same spects. So in extras or addon.

I'm tired of this hard drive nonsese and would love to go SSD from now on.Yet it is over price and same spects.

Hello all, I think my monitor may be about to die, which is sad, because I really like it. However, it is over 7 years old and I don't know if I can justify the price of a repair. I'm using a 21" Viewsonic P815 which was pretty pricey 7 years ago. I browsed the NewEgg site but figured I'd make a post and get some expert opinoins I use my PC for surfing, and games. I'm REALLY trying not to break the bank, I want to stay under $500. Any ideas are appreciated, as well as links to sites with exceptional prices.

Neither ASUS nor Creative Sound audio cards will process "Mic" input from the back panel. I have updated the vendor drivers to Windows 10. I have tried "update," "disable," and "uninstall" approaches in the Device Manager. Audacity doesn't work. I'm trying to copy old LP's and can see that there is some actively in the segmented graphs but no usable throughput to be recorded or listened to in the speakers.

Answer:Sound Card Installation, Windows 10

First, if you are going to copy audio, such as LP's, use the "Line IN" which is stereo and not the MIC which is only mono.
Audacity defaults to "Stereo Mix" for recording. Stereo Mix should be set as the default recording device in the Sound Panel, recording section and no an individual device. With Stereo Mix set, any input can be used. With Creative/SoundBlaster, the Stereo Mix is called "What You Hear".

Conflicts may be causing some of your problem. If you are going to use a separate sound card (e.g. the SoundBlaster) then disable the Integrated (on the motherboard) sound in the BIOS. If you are going to use the Integrated audio, remove the SoundBlaster card.

Can anyonsuggestst a "cheepsound cardrd that works properly with Windows 7 home premium 64bit.
I have tried 2 so far with poor to disastrousouse results.
First was my faithfull C-Meedia 8738 LX with the downloaded drivers from C-media. It worked but half the functions were not there and it made the system almost 90 seconds slower to start up.
Next came Sound Blaster Audigy 24bit. Windows installed it but it didnt work. Downloaded drivers from Creative and it worked then there was an update for it and the PC crashed. Tryed again without the update and all was fine for a few days (although most of the features were missing) then it started to sound like a CD was stuck when playing sounds and I had to reboot every time it did this, then once again it crashed the PC. These were both PCI cards.
I'm now using a 99p external sound dongle but it dosnt work with speekers only headphones.
I'm now hesitant to buy anything. The cheepest sound card I have seen that Microsoft recomend for windows 7 64bit is the Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio PCI-Express - OEM at £35 but I'm reluctant espeshialy as its really a re branded Audigy and not a true X-Fi.
So can anyone help? Has anyone experianced the same problems?

sujex, welcome to the forums.

Your card is one of the few Creative cards that I know very little about,or what it really is. Could you pull the card and post back the model number that is on it, will look something SBxxxx. With that number I will be able to track down whether your SOL, or if there is possibly a modded driver set that will work with it in 7.

Hi there just wanted some help regarding my sound is all. Last night I was happily on my computer searching the web, I then shut my computer down for the night and, as always, I tunred the power off at the socket after a safe shut-down. The morning after I wake up and notice that my sound has suddenly stopped working. The sound card isn't detected, nothing. I've tried switching OS, reinstalling Windows and also clearing the CMOS using a jumper. I've tried everything but I think my onboard sound card is kaput. When I install Windows for the first time on a clean install it has the drivers pre-installed so I dont need to worry about installing them (I have tried installing the drivers from Gigabyte too) but nothing, it's like my sound card isn't even there. What do you think guys am I better going to Scan to get a replacement or buying a cheapo sound card?

Any help is appriciated

Answer:Sound Card not detected in Windows 7 x64

Generally, Windows 7 will install a lot of device drivers, but not all drivers and the generic sound driver that Windows installs may or may not work (or work properly). After installing Windows the best option is to reinstall all the drivers from the motherboard manufacturer's install disc.

As you have a gigabyte (what I also have) install all the drivers, but you don't need all the extra software, which can cause problems in some cases. Case in point the Gigabyte "easy tune" that came with my motherboard caused sound glitches due to CPU interruptions.

My soundcard suddenly stopped working. It says that there are no sound devices installed in my system, but I do see them listed in the device manager.

I have run out of patience trying to research this problem, so I'm coming to you guys for help.

thanks in advance.

So I'm pretty much building a whole new computer, just using the same case, video card, and sound card. But I'm thinking maybe I should change the sound card to something that's more stable with windows 7. Right now I'm using the X-Fi Titanium and it's rather hit or miss whether drivers will produce a clean sound rather than hearing the noises of the internal workings of the computer when the volume is turned up loud.

What would a good option be for a sound card that's completely compatible with Windows 7? Keep in mind that I'm an audiophile and sound quality is of the utmost importance.

Answer:Good Sound card For Windows 7

I personally use an EMU-0404 PCI, but I do home recording. What type of sound stuff are going to be doing? Is it just to listen to music, Gaming, Movies, or recording? We could give you a better idea if you could let us know what your intentions are with the sound card

Edit: Are you looking for internal or external?

I use Messenger and the Messenger API, both of which can access what they call the "Tuning Wizard" which lets you select which sound card in the system to use for audio I/O. In my system for example, I have a USB device that acts as a sound card and a Creative Labs sound card.

Is there a Win32 API (or any other API) call that will do this automatically? For example, I'd like to automatically have my program set the sound card to be the USB device.
