1 Long Beep, 2 Short Beeps

Question: 1 Long Beep, 2 Short Beeps

Hey guys, big problem this time is: computer, stopped working.

I turned it on yesterday and was greeted with a a long beep followed by two short ones. I had a look as my setup and noticed the circuit breaker light wasnt working so thought it might be the breaker was playing up - so I got a replacement.

It worked again, but today it started up but didnt load up the graphics card - I restarted and met the beeps again - it doesnt even get to anything when loading BIOS, just beeps and stays blank screen.

The last thing I changed was adding a few more case fans and its been working fine for about a week and a half. I'm currently doing a Masters in 3d Animation and Im way behind with my final project already working 24/7 so I really cant afford not to do any work.

PC Specs are:

X2 Quad Core Intel Xion 2.5Hz,8GB RAM,Nvidia Geforce 9800GX2,Tyan Tempest i5400XT MoBo,Vista x64,X2 Sata & X3 IDE Drives,7 Case Fans.

Any ideas?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: 1 Long Beep, 2 Short Beeps

Had a look around at beep codes. Someone said your MOBO was Phoenix, but none of their codes match yours.
All but one code I found says your code means a "video failure".
What's it showing in Device Manager (Sound, Video and Game Controllers)?
Could try reinstalling drivers.
Any chance you nudged the video card when installing fans? Check that it's seated properly. Pull it out, check for dust, etc, and re-seat.

Running XP pro Sp2, IE 7 & Mozilla 3.6 8 . Using Mozilla, facebook, farmvile game. Mozilla has the file plugin-container.exe, which taskman shows hogging resources. Out of the blue my pc started the beeping randomly while using mozilla. When I close, no beep since. All other apps are standard, usual and up to date. No new hardware or software. Recent past & some random scroll bar moving by it's self, have not found a fix. That happens on both browsers. Should I remove or disable the plugin-container.exe, & would it affect mozilla & farmville? I read where it suppose to stop the browser from crashing, but it doesn't. Also have virtually the same setup up on another pc routed with this one. Please give me some insight!
If this is the wrong forum, please direct me. Thank You, bikinibeegee

My machine is making these beeps at boot up, nothing on the screen, just four long beeps, then one long, two short - and continues with the one long, two short... Any idea how to sort this out? It suggests the system board is faulty?

Answer:T410 Four long beeps, one long beep, two short beeps...

this could be suggesting a faulty ram, try to take the ram off and reseat them and see what happens. One of the ram is under the keyboard and another one is under the laptop.

Trying to figure out what is wrong in my compaq evo D51C

when I try to boot I get one beep then two longs beeps, I have tried everything possible too, switching out hardware/psu, etc.

I can't figure out what the beeps mean to fix the problem..

one short beep then two or three long beeps.

the computer turns on when I plug the power in so I guess the power button is broke, and the computer sometimes starts to post then shutsdown waits a few seconds starts up and gives the error messages.

Hi everyone,I have a quick question.I've recently bought a second hand T60 (1952-CTO) which had lots of problems including a keyboard that didn't work (0210 error Stuck Key) over heating (reconditioned the CPU fan & reapplied new thermal paste) and now I'm facing a new problem. The T60 works find when plugged in (with no battery installed) but when I tried to run it on the battery alone nothing happened (despite being charged to 100%).When I then turn the T60 on with the power lead and battery I get 1 long beep and 2 short beeps with nothing on the screen. After turning the T60 off then try again, it works and boots up fine.I've looked it up on other threads and they suggest he DIMM so I've tried he following:Battery & Lead [on] - boots okBattery - does not bootBattery & Lead [off] - does not bootBattery & Lead [on] - does not bootUnplug & reconnectBattery & Lead [on] - boots okBattery - does not bootBattery & Lead [off] - boots ok***Battery & Lead [on] - boots okBattery & Lead [off] - boots okBattery - nothingBattery & Lead [off] - nothingBattery & Lead [on] - does not boot - 3 beepsDisconnect & reconnect leadBattery & Lead [on] - boots okBattery - nothingBattery & Lead [on] - boots okRemoved 3rd party DIMM & leave originalBattery & Lead [on] - boots okBattery & Lead [off] - boots okBattery - nothingBattery & Lead [off] - nothingBattery & Lead [on] - boots okBattery - nothingBattery & Lead [on] - b... Computer has been working fine, all of a sudden a game im playing locks up, so i reboot the computer. I then start the game again and a few minutes later it unexpectedly quits and i cannot do anything but move the mouse.

I reboot the computer again and this time the monitor does not display anything and i get one long beep and two short beeps. I looked up the codes and saw it had to do with the video card. I take the video card out and disconnect it and i get the same beep (dont know if its because the card is absent). Any other ideas?

This post is going to involve 2 PCs, which I will refer to as PC 1 and PC 2. They are identical except for their graphics card and power supply. They both have ASUS P5E Intel Core 2 Duo CPU E8400 3.00GHz, 3.25 RAM, running windows XP.

PC 1 ( gforce 8800gt card and a 500 watt power supply )

The LG monitor went off and never came back on. My sister had an old vga Mitsubishi diamond plus 91. I didn't have the funds yet to buy a new one so I hooked that up and everything was fine for about a week or two. Then the monitor shuts off and goes into power saving mode. I assume power supply and it sits waiting for a new one.

PC 2 ( gforce 9800gtx card and a 700 watt power supply )

The LG monitor went off and never came back on. I take the Mitsubishi from PC 1 and a week later, the monitor shuts off and goes into power saving mode. I assumed the monitor finally died and went out and bought a new acer flat screen. I hooked it up and when I booted up I heard 1 long beep and 3 short beeps. The monitor went into power saving mode. I then researched and found that beeping code to be an Award Bios error saying the graphic card was bad. I pulled the card from PC 1 and upon boot up I heard 1 long beep and 3 short beeps.

As I read this back to myself, I am seeing and feeling sick at the thought of....did I fry 2 graphic cards by using that old vga? They are both lifetime warrantied but it means both PCs down for as long as it takes to RMA them. I am currently on my laptop, but my worl... Read more

Hey well I am building a computer and when I boot up I get one long beep then two short beeps

Motherboard is A8N-SLI Premium 939
Video card is x300 ATI

I have no idea what is causing this to do this

Answer:Long beep two short beeps

Looking up some info on the motherboard:

1 long, 2 short - Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information.

In layman's terms. There is something wrong with the video card.

Yesterday I shutdown my computer and when I went to turn it back on it was not sending a signal to the monitor and the computer bios was letting out a sequence of beeps.

1 Long beep followed by two short beeps.

I consulted my Motherboard manual to find that the beeps meant the graphics card was loose/not in all the way. So I opened it up jostled the card a bit and voila the computer started up and ran without a problem for ten minutes. I restarted it to get some updates and...well same problem back to square one.

It seems as though everytime I take the GC out and put it back in the computer will work but if I don't then it won't work.

PS: I cleaned the PCI-E Slot and the GC.

Any thoughts?

Answer:Long Beep Followed by Two Short Beeps

Make sure the fan is spinning on the card.

Take a pencil eraser and clean the gold contacts on the card, becareful and blow the eraser dust off before installing.

It could just be a bad video card that acts up when it gets hot

Hey guys, this is what has basically happened:

Last night, I was on my PC when a powercut happened. All power gone for about 1/2 hour, no big deal...I thought. When the power came back, I was able to log onto my PC however there was no internet, and this was apparant on all other computers in my house and the router also indicated this.

I then logged on this morning, with no internet still however there was internet in the rest of the house. I thought to restart the router and also my PC, however, when I tried to turn my PC back on, all i got was 1 long beep then 2 short beeps. I did some research and found out that this was a visual problem..something to do with my video card.

Is there anything immediate I can do right now to verify this, or do something..whatever..

Thanks for your time, any help is appreciated.

I have an IBM Thinkcentre M50 with a P4 CPU and a AGP card Geforce FX5500 and it works just fine. I would like to upgrade the video to a Geforce 6600gt which I have. However, when it is installed, I get the beeps and no video. Is the Motherboard incompatible, is the power supply not good enough. It's only 230w. Lenovo says the card should work, but I'm thinking, what do they know.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I just removed the card and placed it in another older PC and it worked. I then put the card back into the IBM with the power supply from the old PC and nothing except the beeps.

I am having problems with my computer not turning on, one long beep then two short beeps, then a black screen. Just happened last night, the machine went into sleep mode, wouldn't come out, I rebooted and that is the error beeps I received. It has been a great little machine till now. I am in contact with customer support/service in Taiwan, where I bought the machine, but I am wondering if anyone else had problems with this on their R61?  I know the T61 had a lot of problems, and I'm wodnering if it's related? Also, I cannot find my original receipt (company paid for the machine, I'm trying to get them to track back through their accounting receipts...)  but I know I paid for 3 years (2 additonal years warranty) but I have only one year listed online. Worst case scenario, if if thea ccounting team cannot locate the receipt, is it possible to pay for additional warranty, and then have the computer fixed. I do not work at the company any longer, though I still have my machine (nice of them) and I think it will be very expensive to fix if it is a mother board problem.

what is the GPU used on your machine?

I just built a computer for the first time - I've had 2 different people look at it as well as hours spent on Ventrilo discussing what I may have missed.

The Computer:
Intel Mobo DP55kg
Processor Intel i7 870
no onboard graphics
ram is corsair 1600mhz 4x2gb chips #CMX8GX3M4A1600C9 ddr3

So basically when I hit the power button - all the fans etc come on but it won't show up on the monitor. One short beep happens showing it's booting then after a few seconds I get 2 long beeps, pause, 2 long beeps.

Now the information that came with the mobo says this is a graphics error - I've already replaced the graphics with a brand new one. Some other forums suggest it's a memory error - but could 4 different sticks really be bad? A friend suggested a bad batch, but before I go out and buy more stuff that I'll end up returning to the store - does anyone have any other suggestions as to what is causing this?

Things I've Tried:
Replaced Video Card
Tried different connections with video card
tried 4 different sticks of memory in all 4 different slots with different combinations.
took the entire motherboard out and made sure no posts were touching then put it all back
tried just the basics, no HD or Sata cables
reseated the processor
upgraded the power supply from 600w to 850w
the monitor does work, have it hooked up to my laptop as we speak
moved the jumper back and forth to clear the cmos?

Hello all,

I just obtained a tower for free from my school. It is a Compaq Evo with a Pentium IV processor. It has a video card, cd drive and floppy drive with usb ports. I have an old 4 gb HDD hooked up to it. I was told that all it needed was RAM. I have a ton of Ram sticks. This computer has 3 SDRAM DIMM slots. When I push the power button I get 1 short beep and 2 long beeps.. then nothing happens, no display, not able to get into BIOS or anything. I have tried multiple monitors, I have replaced the video card, I have tried every single SDRAM DIMM stick that I have, I have reset the CMOS with the button and with the battery, I have removed and reinstalled the processor, I have unplugged and reconnected all cables.. still getting 1 beep and 2 long beeps. When I look up the beep codes it seems to be a RAM problem, but I have a hard time accepting that with all of the RAM sticks that I have tried that work in other computers. If anybody can help lead me in a different direction I would be extremely grateful!!!

Hey, I have a problem with my won't boot up; as soon as I try, I get 1 long beep, followed by 2 shorter beeps. There is no display on my monitor either.

I'm really stuck at to what to do...I've done the usual taking out battery, booting without power supply, letting lappy heat up, removed and reinserted both RAM slots, checked the fan was working okay, tried to boot using a different monitor (acted as if PC was on standby)...all to no avail.

My laptop model is:

It's about 16 months old, so past its warranty, I read that the beep pattern was a BIOS code for Video Card failure, which I now presume is the problem, but just wanted confirmation so I don't end up wasting a bomb of money if I need to get it repaired (diagnosis usually costs at least £50 here :s)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, unfotunately I'm no pro with these things...

About 8 out of 10 times that I power on my machine I get One Long Beep and Two short beeps on boot. I've looked up this error code and it seems to point to a video error. However I have tried another pci-e card (that I know works) and I still get the same thing.

I have removed all cables and cards from the machine and cleaned then reseated everything. I have tried various sticks of ram in various configurations (1 on its own, two, four, etc), I have unplugged all external devices while booting, tried the aforementioned other video card... all of this to no avail, the problem still occurs.

The only thing that seems to make any difference, is tilting my pc forwards or backwards 45 degrees or so... but even this doesn't always work, I end up resetting again and again until, eventually the PC powers up and does the single bios beep. The machine runs fine then, until I reboot or shut down and the fun starts all over again.

I have also cleared the CMOS, tried booting up with less items plugged in. The thing that baffles me is that my PC ran perfectly well for almost two years, and then without a crash or anything this has started to occur. The system is plugged into Belkin surge protector and the leds on this tell me that there has been no surge on the power socket.

I am running (when it can be arsed to boot):

PSU or the actual slot/motherboard may be the culprits. Easiest to try a different PSU first and if that still causes the errors, you may end up having to get a new mobo. I have also heard sometimes that bad memory can cause video problems.

DO THE UPDATES FROM LENOVO KILL OUR LAPTOP?  My laptop is out of warranty, and I hate to replace another mainboard.... Answer:T61P died, 1 long beep - 2 short beeps problem - Do the updates from Lenovo KILL our laptop?

so far it looks like a strict hardware problem, not related to updates. however, some manufacturers try to "cheat" with bios updates - they make fan to run at higher speed lowering the mainboard temp. This does not solve the problem per se, it just makes laptop survive beyond warranty expiration date, so you, dear customer, will have to foot the bill.

Hi, While working on my laptop I got an error message regarding some memory and when I re-started the laptop there was a blank screen with one long and two short beeps. Going through various blogs/ forums and help sections on net and Lenovo website I got to know that this relates to Video board or motherboard error. I have opened my laptop and found NVIDIA graphics card mounted on motherboard which I am guessing must be causing the display error. I believe this is NVIDIA G72M-V (GO 7300) card which needs to be replaced. I have read about NVIDIA cards abnormal behavior on net in some Laptops. Is it possible that I can replace existing NVIDIA graphic card with some Intel graphic card compromising the graphic quality but at least I can do normal work. Regards Sachin

When turned on, screen is blank and beep codes are "long-short-short-pause-short-short".
I can't find info about this beep code. I've found that long-short-short is bad video but what about next two short beeps?
Hard drive activity looks normal after that and I guess system works fine except graphics.External video output doesn't work.

Hi,  I recently updated my BIOS to the latest version using the System Update tool from Lenovo. For a while everything seemed to be working alright, as the BIOS was dowloaded and the computer rebooted. After rebooting the first time i was presented with the BIOS utility, and noticed that the update was progressing.  After 20 or so seconds the computer rebooted again. This is where my problems began. The computer immediately started beeping this short-short-short-long melody from the speakers. I thought this was normal, so I left the computer on for quite a while.  However, the beeping never stopped. Now the beeping resumed the instant i plug the power back in. I have yet been able to actually getting any sort of information on-screen telling me what's wrong.  I've tried following the "Recovering from a POST/BIOS update failure" on page 267 of the Hardware Maintenance Manual, but no luck with that so far. No matter where I place the jumper, the beeping code is the same short-short-short-long melody (yeah, it sounds like a disney tune or something). Any bright ideas? The machine type is a M92p 2992-B3G I'd hate to have to send it in for repairs, and Lenovo's Norwegian support line doesn't open until Monday, and there seems to be no way to call their 800-number in the states from here  Oh, and would this be covered by my warranty if repairs / motherboard replacement is the only way out? UPDATE #1: I found... Answer:CPU fan is working for few seconds and stoped then a long beep and 2 short beep

Hello, Your reported T61 bios beep codes would indicate you have one of the following failures: System boardLCD assemblyDIMMThe DIMMS would be my first choice to test so, if you have more than one DIMM installed, try  try removing one of them and try to boot, if OK, you have removed the bad RAM; however, if the results are the same, remove the other DIMM and install the one you removed previously. If you can boot OK now, you have isolated the bad RAM. Now, if you can't boot with either stick, then, I guess the RAM is not the problem (unless you have two bad sticks and I doubt that). See the  Memory Removal and Installation Guide for more information. Good luck!

Here is my problem I have a Compaq presario with a frozen bios screen but cpu ok, mem ok, video ok, nothing is conected and power supply ok.
any ideas?

Answer:Compaq bios freeze short beep long beep

Is the beep pattern just one short one long? Check your manual for the POST beep codes to determine what it is telling you. All POST beep codes are different so there's no way to tell unless we know exact model of your PC. The manual usually has the beep code in it, though.

Hi guys,

I have an Asus Z97A Motherboard/GTX 1080/24GB DDR3Gskill/ 500 GB SSD + 1to HDD and recently when i boot my PC i hear 1 long beep then quickly after 3 short beep.. I've searched in Asus website about the meaning of these beep and it's written that it's a Video card faulty..

But well just after these beep my pc is booting well ! and video card working well too, i've no problem playing games.

The strange thing also is that it's making these beep like 1 time every 2 or 3 days as i shut down my pc every night and when i'm going to work.

Do you have an idea of what i can do ??

EDIT : And by the way here's what i tried,

-Disable integrated graphic
-Clear CMOS
-Update Nvidia driver

Answer:1 Long beep + 3 short beep Asus motherboard

This may be your GPU video card starting to fail.

When I start up my 23-q059na All-In-One, I get 3 long beeps then 4 short beeps, several times. It then appears to start up fine. I've tried looking at the diagnostics help but there doesn't appear to be any information on this error. I've tried to find the memory diagnostics option in the BIOS but there is no option for this. It is still under warranty - should I just take it back to the store?

Hi! Thanks ahead of time for helping me!!I barely use my computer and once when it was in 'SLEEP' mode, I pushed the 'Start' button and it started beeping. I powered it off manually and ever since then, when I start up, I get three long beeps and four short beeps, five times in a row! I searched for the beep codes but didn't see those particular beeps. My warranty ended in October, of course! Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated!!Thanks!

Hi, I bought my computer at Christmas time and randomly around a month ago I got a blue screen error with windows and so, and I was able to fix it thanks to Microsoft support, but after that my harddrive fried somehow and so I got the hard drive replaced with a new one and made sure it worked on a different computer. But now when I try to turn on the computer I get 3 long beeps and 2 short beeps and it won't work, I've tried removing the CMOS battery and ram cards and I've looked everywhere but even with both of those out it still does it. I spent $800 on this computer and I'm extremely poor and I'm unable to get it fixed at all, so if anyone could help me at all it would mean the world..

I was just using my PC yesterday, everything is normal, It was hot around 32 ?C I think. Around 3:00 P.M. my PC suffered 2 BSODS, I can't upload the .dmp files because I can't open it. I thought its just overheating so I turned it off and after a few minutes the second BSOD appeared, I restarted my PC and the one short beep and one long beep is sounding. I checked my RAM and tried to switch it to another bank but the beeping is still there. My video card temp was 50-52 ?C before the first BSOD happened. What can I do to fix this?

Is it possible you are hearing 1 long - one short?
That might indicate a BIOS CHECKSUM error, depending on the brand of BIOS.

You can try a ClearCMOS procedure (CLRTC is the same thing):
Note all your current BIOS settings
Shut down the computer > remove the power cord.
Remove the 3v motherboard battery.
Move the CLRTC jumper from pins 1-2 to 2-3.
Touch a metal part of the case and Press and Hold the reset button for approx. 30 seconds to discharge all power from the board.
Put the CLRTC jumper back on pins 1-2.
Replace the 3v battery > replace the power cord > boot.
Immediately go back into BIOS and reset all your preferred settings. If the CLRTC worked you will need to reset the date and time.

Hi, Today I replaced my old graphics card with a new GeForce 9500GT and also added a new Kingston 2GB Ram Card. I installed both of them then restarted the computer, since then it has only powered on and playing 1 short beep then 1 long beep. I've tryed everything I can think of ranging from taking out everything new and putting it back to before I added the new items to completely taking out all 3 RAM sticks and reseating them. I'm not sure how a brand new unopened 2GB ram stick that fit perfectly and a brand new right out of the box graphics card can cause a problem like this. I've been through the ins and outs of the internet trying to find a solution but nothing has worked. Hoping someone can think of a unique way to fix this or how it could have possibly happened in the first place. I dont buy anything used everything placed inside my computer was/is brand new when it was purchased. Any help/comments on solutions would be greatly appreciated thanks.

My Gateway GT5678 has recently stopped booting up. It turns on, then shortly after beeps once followed by two quick short beeps. According to the gateway error codes this indicates a video card failure. The strange thing is once out every 15-20 or so startup attempts it will start fine. I have tried reseating the video card and have tried taking the video card out and using the other vga output on the tower and no luck. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. -J

Best test would be another video card. Aside from that, it could also be the motherboard.

hi 1bellb

make sure that all of your RAM chips are firmly placed into their slots and that they aren't susceptible to movement in and out of the slots. You could also run Memtest on your chips from here - You've heard right about the beeping sounds probably being caused by RAM issues. Good luck

I have an msi motherboard (which I think uses AMI BIOS code) and I accidently changed a setting on the BIOS menu and then it restarted and gave me 4 short beeps along with a message that flashed kinda fast saying something along the lines of, "please insert usb flash disk with bios file. "CHECKING FOR USB DEVICE" DEVICE NOT Found."

Afterwards I removed anything in the USB slots and tried but still got the same message. I then read that some people solved the issue by removing the power cord and waiting 5 before removing the CMOS . I waited 15 minutes to insure that the extra charge dissipated then removed it.

I waiting for about 5 minutes before reinstalling it and now I got 4 short beeps, a pause, and then 2 long beeps. I also have no image on the monitor. I tried looking into the beeps but I couldn't find a description of this code. I could find info for 4 short and info for 2 long but I'm not sure what this means either. I am not over clocking either.

It WAS running windows 8.1
Motherboard: 760gm E51- fx
GPU: MSI Radeon HD7870

Any help would be much appreciated to solving this.

I checked the samsung site and this is the page to download your manual. I am looking at it now and trying to find out which bios you have so I could check the beep code for your bios but I don't have much time this morning. Perhaps you could look through it and see.

Dear community members,I hope someone can help me. During a BIOS-update of my R500 (2731-A11), it 'froze' and nothing was reacting anymore. My Windows 7 closed the BIOS update program and I wanted to restart because of the previous software updates in the Lenovo update program. Here it comes.... after this my laptop didn't restart anymore. It stays with a blank screen and beeps (once long, twice short) I have read the hardware manual and it says I have to check RFU System Board, DIMM or LCD. Is there really not another way to do this. I am not very technical and I don't think the problem is in the hardware, because it is a 1 or 2 year old Lenovo  Please help me.I really hope that my BIOS isn't damaged or something. When I had a pc I just changed the CMOS battery, but I assume laptops don't have a cmos battery.

Answer:R500 one long, two short beep

there is CMOS battery, it is located under the keyboard. The ram modules is under the palmrest. You should try to take out the ram modules and start the laptop without it and then reinstall them. Here is the manual that shows you how to do it.

I have a HP a6130n (purchased in July 2007) and it has been giving me the "blue screen" and shutting down. Then all I get is one short and one long beep. It will start up again and work for a while but then will do the same thing again. I have NOT installed anything new. No new hardware or no new software in the last several months.
Any HELP?!

Answer:HP a6130n one short one long beep

Hi there

According to HP's support website, one short and one long beeps signify that your computer is having problems with the installed memory modules. Your symptoms are also common of the same.

Your computer supports four, 1GB DDR2-667 (PC2-5300) RAM sticks. I suggest you replace the ones in your computer. You might only have one or two.

Replacing them is easy and can be done at home.

Here is a cheap pair (two 1gb modules):
If you have more than one RAM stick it is possible that only one of them is faulty while the other is fine. To test your RAM modules you will need to run a memory test such as memtest86+

To figure out which one it is, you can also take one out and turn your computer on with just one or the other. If you figure out which one is faulty you can leave that one out and run the computer on just the healthy one.

Answer:long beep, short deadline :-(

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Can you describe the 1 long beep a little more?

Does it do this then nothing?

Does it do this then repeat?

If it gives one long beep and then nothing, then it probably means you have a faulty cpu.

See Below.

Basic Beep Codes for ABIT AWARD BIOS Motherboards

No beep at all - this means your motherboard is dead, either due to a defective or underpowered power supply, poorly seated CPU or RAM, or a dead-on-arrival board

One beep - board is working fine

One long beep then machine shuts down - faulty, improperly installed or missing CPU

1 short(Beep) System booting is normally

2 short(Beep) CMOS setting error

1 long - 1 short(Beep) DRAM ERROR

1 long - 2 short(Beep) Display card or monitor connected error

1 long - 3 short(Beep) Keyboard Error

1 long - 9 short(Beep) ROM Error

Long(Beep) continuous DRAM isn't inserted correctly

Short(Beep) continuous POWER supply has a problem

A two-tone siren, generally caused by overheating or out of specification voltages

Four beeps then machine shuts down. This is because this version of the BIOS will shut down your machine if no fan tachometer signal is detected on the fan header. Make sure you attach a fan to the FAN1 or FAN4 header or clear CMOS to reset to default (no checking).

Thanks to Paul Howland & Overclockers for providing the information.

Hi all,
I thought I'd upgrade my GTX 285 to a GTX 580, so I got one and after installing it properly and turning the computer on, it proceeds to beep 4 times (1 long, 3 short). I checked, and apparently it means the video card is not detected, however I am sure that it is inserted properly and into the right slot. After going back to my 285, everything works fine again. I have a 620W power supply. I also have two 6-pin cables, even though the card has 6 + 8 pins (could this be the problem?).
I appreciate the help.

Hi all,MoBo is Acer H61H2-AD. Machine is Gateway SX2855, purchased 10/2013.  I understand this indicates a hardware error and inet searching seems to indicate video card.  I do not and never had a video/graphics card, always used MoBo supplied.  My question, any idea what the one-long two-short specifically indicates?  I've tried checking all wire connections (unplug/re[plug) and same with memory (single 4GB card), also tried moving memory card to other slot, and a good de-dusting via compressed air, all with no luck, still getting the beeps. Visual inspection doesn't identify any obvious bad capacitors.  Any help would be appreciated! Thanks,Doug

Answer:One long two short beeps at startup during the POS...

The three models of the Gateway SX2855 I found all have Intel HD integrated graphics. Unless you installed a Video card or yours is a model with a PCI video card, you have integrated graphics. Is it booting? to a black screen? Have you tried F8 at boot to boot into safe mode?As soon as you start, start tapping F8 rapidly. If you get into safe mode, go to Programs and Features and uninstall the video driver and reboot.

The beeping started on Day 2 of owning the PC. I returned it to Currys PC World and they 'repaired' it by reinstalling the OS and updating hte BIOS (I don't know which BIOS - I assume the MB rather than the GPU). The beeking was gone when I got it back but again on the 2nd day it was back... Online I found that the beep sequence of 3:3 meant "The embedded controller has timed out waiting for BIOS to return from graphics initialization." When I boot the machine and play any video full screen, the display blacks out after a few seconds and I have to quit the application to recover. What can I do?

2. the RAM which i went to the store and replaced from one 2gb stick and now is 2X TEAM Xtreem 800mhz DDR2 and
2X Kingston HyperX 1066Mhz DDR2
and they are all Brand New. Except the Graphics Card (Zotac nvidia 9800GT 612MB)
are there any ideas of what i can do? as might have to drive to Umart tomorrow but would rather not. Please reply ASAP!

The problem: There's no video when I turn on the machine. Everything sounds normal except that there is a long beep and two short beeps when the machine POSTs. There have been NO hardware modifications to the machine for about 8 months.

Manuals I can find online indicate that this is a video error.

What I've tried:

Removing all USB devices (all devices in fact)
Clearing the CMOS
Booting without a videocard
Booting with a brand new videocard
Testing each stick of ram individually in each individual slot

What I'm thinking:
Either the mobo or the PSU are dead. The PSU is <12 months old, and the mobo is ~6 years old, so I think it's more likely the mobo rather than the PSU. However, it's easier to pick up a spare PSU and test it, so I'll do that saturday, but in the meantime, is there anything else I should try before biting the bullet and getting a new mobo/CPU/ram? Nobody makes LGA 775 mobos anymore.

Full specsif anyone's interested:

Mobo: MSI P7N SLI Platinum (6 years old)
CPU: Intel core 2 quad q6700 (6 years old)
Video: XFX ATI Radeon HD 5770 (4 years old), also tried with a Gigabyte Geforce GTX 660 (<1 day old)
PSU: Thermaltake (Purepower?) 500W (~8 months old)
RAM: 4x 2gb sticks I picked up as a shell shocker off of newegg about. Never came with heatspreaders so no real logos/no idea on the manufacturer. (5 years old)
Peripherals: There is a DVD-Rom drive attached (>7 years old)

Answer:1 long and 2 short beeps on POST

I would start with the is a LOW END PSU with less than 70% efficiency...and your GPU requires a minimum of 450W its quite possible that you are simply not getting enough juice to the card. you DO have the 6pin PCIE connector hooked into the GPU right?? Have you checked the voltages being reported in the BIOS?? check those and report back....

Hi, by accident we plugged in the power cable into an usb port insted of the power port...Now, when we start up the laptop, there is just one long beep and two short beeps and nothing more (black screen)...Does anybody konws what we damaged? Actually we wanted to buy a new laptop in a few weeks, but I'd like to recover all my data on the harddisk.Any ideas how to recover them or how big the damge on the laptop is? It is an ThinkPad R32 2659-EG2. Thanks a lot for your answers!

Answer:One long and two short beeps at starting up, then nothing more...

Hard to tell what happened to the R32. Probably smoked the motherboard. As far as getting the info off of your hard drive, get a USB enclosure/adapter for your 2.5 inch drive and connect it to the new computer and there is your data.

Last night I left my S10 ideapad plugged in downstairs (last activity was about midnight).  At 6:00 a.m., was awaked by a loud alarm, 1 long + 2 short beeps, repeating.  System was unresponsive (had to remove battery to stop the beeping).  If the beep codes are similar to other Lenovo laptops, this is a generic beep code for system board or display or BIOS (not very useful, heh!) Anyone else see this?  Early adopter problems to be sure, so no real complaints (other than frustration) but just seeing if anyone else has seen this.  Since I got it:  - Updated to latest XP patches - Installed MS Office and AIM Lite- Upgraded display driver via Lenovo website (PuTTY didn't work until I did that)  Tried to use ThinkVantage auto system update, but it doesn't seem to connect to their server (might just be that they haven't loaded S10 stuff up there yet).

Hello people. I've very recently come across a big problem. When cold starting up my HP Media Center m7000 computer I hear 2 short and a long beep. However I can start the machine apparently using a trick which is to turn it on and keep holding the button until it turns off again and then quickly turning on once more. This seems to work after a few trials and today it worked after i opened the box and touched the wires connecting the power button to the motherboard. I've tested the graphic card and it is ok. Could this be a virus? I've changed nothing in my computer, in fact it's untouched for it's lifetime. Another interesting factor: When the computer has been running for a while, there is no problem at all, it will start, restart and cold-start. The next day the problem repeats itself. This isn't supposed to happen to HP computers Any clues? Thank you very much!!!!!!

Answer:Beep code: 2 short, 1 long but i can still start up sometimes!

For months I have been having that problem, I turn on my PC and I hear this sound I have attached as a zip file. and the PC would not boot. then I would fiddle with the memory and video card making show they are in tight and then it would boot normal, but after some time of using the PC I would sometimes get a blue screen saying dumping and after the dump I would have to restart. or I would just get countless restart. I would have to power off the PS from the switch for a few hrs or over night and the power back on the the restarting would stop.

I also use and Antec EarthWatt 500 and I get the same problem, but a few days ago I noticed that my Antec was making a hissing sound, like it is leaking electricity, but the pc would stay on, until I start to play video games for a while or MAA on Facebook. the hissing would stop after a while but when something gets too hot, the PC would just restart, and keep restarting until I turn the power on from the back of the PS for a few hrs or over night and then it would start again.

I tried cleaning the PC, PS, Video Car and Memory like I normally do every 6-8months and now the pc would not start. I just keep getting the Long beep, or is it a Long and 2 very short beeps, you tell me after you have listened to the audio file. I have tried fiddling with the VC and MS to no avail. I tried unplugging the Dvi from the card and I would not get no beeps at all, pc would just stay on. plug monitor back and no beeps. power off PS and turn it bac... Read more

Hi all,

Just shutdown my PC and on turning it on nothing happened. Tried a few more times and now it's making a long beep followed by two short ones (though very closely spaced, hardly any gap between them), nothing on screen.

Reading around, it was suggested this might be a video card problem (due to the beep code). I've tried all of the following to no avail:

1) Removing all connected (USB etc) devices
2) Removing everything connected to the mobo (IDE cables, sound card etc)
3) Removing each of my sticks of RAM, followed by both at the same time
4) Removing my video card (no onboard one)
5) Resetting the CMOS

Even with everything I can think of disconnected other than the mobo power, it still beeps. This leads me to think it's the motherboard itself that has gone, rather than the graphics card (I'd expect a different error if I had no graphics card present?). This ties in with my computers rather odd behaviour over the past few months (e.g the odd blue screen, CD drive access on either drive causing it to hard reset after a bit, occasionally not starting until I leave it for a minute...), and I'm totally willing to replace my motherboard, but was just wandering if anyone had any other checks or suggestions to recommend before I go out and buy one?

And if anyone could recommend a good, cheap mobo (all I really need from it is SATA and support for my processor, I'm not too hardcore a user) that would be great.

Answer:1 long beep, 2 short, I think it's the mobo dead?

You MAY POSSIBLY have a problem with bad capacitors. Take the side off the machine and use a bright light to look carefully at the capacitors. The capacitors are small can type objects that should be perfectly flat on the top. If any have "bulging" tops, are leaking a brownish looking fluid, or the capacitors are leaning (not perpendicular to the motherboard) they may be bad.

Attached is a link showing what you should be looking for.

At times as capacitors start to fail boards become very erratic.

I've just put together the following system:

Seasonic x850
Gigabyte z87x D3H
G.Skill Ares Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core

I'm also running two 8800GTS until I'm able to upgrade them. I suspect they must be faulty as I'm unable to get any video signal from them. When using the on-board video out, I was able to boot the system and all seemed well. I shut-down, but now I am unable to any video, and have one long and three short beeps on power-up. I have tried my GPU's in either slot, have tried on-board display, have reset CMOS, have switched RAM into other slots. If no RAM is inserted, I get multiple short beeps.

I was running the two 8800GTS on a socket 775 motherboard that packed-up, and I ordered a second-hand replacement, but I sent it back as I thought it was faulty as I couldn't get any video. There's no way a faulty GPU could damage a motherboard is there? There just seems to be a pattern of me trying the GPU and then being left with no video...

Any suggestions will be most appreciated!

Answer:New Build, one long beep, three short, no video

Check the owner's manual for the board - it should list what the "beep" code means. If you do not have the manual that came with the board, you should be able to go to Gigabyte's website and look it up.

Hope this helps.

Asus A8N-E Motherboard

I get the same beep code no matter what I do.
Things I've done while clearing CMOS each time
Pulled the Video Card
Switched Video card
Switched PCI slots for Video cards
Switched Monitors
Pulled RAM
Replaced CMOS Battery which tested dead
Pulled the power on all drives

I'm thinking power supply but I don't have one to swap.

Any Ideas

Hello Geeks,

Oh, my computer is sad. I returned home from a weekend trip to find it still idling but with no internet connection. The cat had tread on the power strip to the modem and turned it off. No big deal, turned it back on but still had no connection to the internet. So I rebooted.

And that was the last time I ever saw my poor PC function. Now I get nothing except one long beep followed by three short beeps and spinning fans. From what I'd read that indicated either a RAM issue or a Video issue, depending on the bios. I am fairly certain I have AWARD bios, so I assumed it was the video. But since I didn't want to think my newish, expensive video card was toast, I removed, cleaned, and reseated everything first.

No dice. So I ordered up a new video card. Still no dice. Grrr. Well, now I'm plus one 500 dollar video card and minus one working computer. All the fans/internal lights were working, so I figured the power supply was still good. Does that mean the Motherboard slot is toast? Should I try a newer PSU? Replace the MOBO?

The video card is enormous and wont really fit into the secondary video slot, and I'm not sure that'd work anyway, though I tried wedging it past the other connections. Couldn't really seat it without risking breaking something else, so I didn't. Not sure how to proceed. Any advice is appreciated.

I would check your memory. One long and three short should indicate a memory issue for Asus boards. SLI&SLanguage=en-us

Ok so ive been here several times over the past 2 or so years with this same issue, and every time I think I have it solved but to no avail. here is the issue:
my computer was working fine one night and in the morning it wouldnt start. I click the power button and everthing sounds fine until Its suppost to give a single beep, but insted it gives me 1 long and 2 short beeps. I have an Award bios, and when I went to check out what this means, it says it:
"Indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information"

so im not sure what this means other than the video card is bad. the video card is pretty new and before I go any further i guess I should say that the last time this happend, I fixed it by resetting my cpu. and before you say it, yes I have already tried this.

Answer:1 long beep 2 short? (award bios)

Sounds like the video card bit the bullet :dead:

Those beeps indicate that there is a hardware problem with your computer. If you give me the make and model and year. I may be able to tell you precisely what the short and long beeps mean.

Unless its the hard drive your pics are safe.

I have a Sony VGN-FZ21E the laptop shows no display when turned on and give one long beep and then two short beeps. I've tried connecting a external display but this also shows no picture.

I've changed the RAM and the HHD but the beep still continue, with no display showing.

How do I fix this problem?

Answer:One long beep then two short, no display shown

Those beeps are your BIOS "telling" you something is wrong. In order to work out what it is trying to say, we need to know what BIOS you are running. When your PC boots, it shows a black screen with writing.....something like AWARD BIOS Ver 1.021.

Can you tell us what yours says? Once we know, we can work out what the beeps mean.

I'm bad at computers, so I'm not sure where to put this.

My laptop fell out of my backpack just about a foot above a carpeted floor. I thought it might be OK, but when I turn it on, I hear one longer beep and then two shorter ones. The screen remains black and never displays anything.

"Behind" this black screen I can hear the computer seeming to boot as normal. I hear the chimes when the desktop should come up, and pressing my keyboard volume shortcuts I hear the volume beeps, so the computer itself seems to work, but the screen displays nothing.

I've googled and searched, and it seems like it might be a "video problem" or "video card problem" and I've also seen references to computer memory and motherboards. But honestly, I don't know much about computer maintenance and repair, so I'm lost.

Please help me!

It is a Sony Vaio VGN-SZ680 laptop. I don't know a lot about computers, but I'm good at fixing things and following instructions. I have a copy of the SZ680 repair manual, and would really like to avoid the cost of getting it repaired elsewhere if possible. If anyone knows what needs replacement, etc. that would be awesome.
