Optical Drive / Possible Hard-drive problem

Question: Optical Drive / Possible Hard-drive problem

So I'm currently trying to install a game, for some reason at the exact same point every time i am getting an error that says: Cyclic Redundancy Check Error. Ive been all over the internet looking for solutions to this problem but none of them are working for my situation. Most people say it is either a problem with the disk or the hard drive itself, but i have gone back to the store where i bought the game and got a new disk so the disk cannot be the problem as it stops at the same place regardless. Also my hard drive cannot be the problem because i have tried installing it to both my computers hard-drive as well as an external drive which leaves me no option but to believe it is a problem with the optical drive. Since i have a laptop i cant dismantle anything to clean / make sure the drive is connected properly. I dont know if there is a solution to this problem short of having to send my computer to a proffessional / back to the manufacturer but if anything i have done is wrong then i would love a suggestion of what i could possibly do to fix this problem. I am also not against revisiting my hard drive being at issue if anyone still thinks it is the problem.

Please Assist,
Cheers,
Jias

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have two identical hard drives connected as master and slave on primary ide channel, and two optical drives on secondary ide. The problem is that the slave hard drive will only run in pio mode, and not udma mode 5 (as the primary does). The upshot of this is that any file transfer to or from my slave drive results in 100% cpu usage, and it's very annoying. As I have an uptodate motherboard do you think that putting a hdd on each ide channel with optical as slave would speed things up?

It was a mistake, but I see no downside right now as I don't need the space and it looks like it would run cooler. I have only 2 screws securing it as access to the other 2 seems problematic as it would be in the proper bay below HD 1.
Initially not recognized but after seeing it as available in pre-boot, and re-booting it appeared in Disk Management, ready for the formatting process. 2T.
Thank you.

Answer:XPs 8700 installed 2nd hard drive in optical bay - any problem with that?

I would not ship the system with the drive there with only two screws, but it wouldn't bother me at all.
On the 8700s we use with gaming cards, the HDD cage has been removed so there is only room for one drive in the HD2 slot, and the SSD is parked in the optical bay. Again I wouldn't ship it like this but it is fine for me.

I installed a second hard drive in place of the DVD drive and now when my computer is plugged in it won't charge (it says plugged in, not charging).  I can't imagine that the power adapter isn't able to handle a second hard drive because I've seen plenty of people that said they put two hard drives in their w530.  Is there some kind of driver or setting that I need to reset to make this work again?  I'm on windows 8.1 by the way so a lot of the solutions I've found by googling do not apply to my system.

H Guys,Need help with this one. Got three Dell Latitude C810 Laptops and all three are coming up with the same message. Primary Hard Drive: NoneFixed Optical Drive: Not installed.I am very comfortable around computers / laptops  and thought I knew my way around them until now.The hard drives are all brand new 40GB IDE hard drives that work fine on other laptops (tested them). The laptops have the HD adapters fitted before I installed them in the laptops. Even bought three replacement adapters - just in case. Did not make any difference. When the units power up, they go through POST, spend ages on the splash screen and the error messages come up.The HD and Optical Drive is not registering in BIOS.I read somewhere to take out the battery, unplug laptop from mains and hold power botton for 30 seconds or so. Tried that no luck. Also read somewhere to have the Caps, Num and Scroll keys all on in or before going into BIOS and do the Alt+E, Alt+F and Alt+B. The Alt+B combination was supposed to be held until the laptop reboots itself. Held them down for almost a minute and nothing happened. Laptop did not reboot. The Alt+F did reset the Laptops Bios to default setting and dates, and nothing more. They still did not register the HD or Optical Drive.I have swapped out HDs, DVD ROMs, with or without battery, Swapped out RAMs - ram memtest on another laptop. They all came back okay. This is really thrown me and I'd realy appreciate some assitance.Cheers guys.KS

Hi,

I disabled the optical drive from Windows System folder because it was faulty and slowing down my computer.

However, now, a virus has stopped from starting Windows.

Since this configuration of Windows on the Hard Drive, can I replace the Hard Drive with a new one so it can:

A. Reset my configuration to allow a Windows Installation disk to boot up from the "newly installed" optical drive,

B. Erase any prior infected files I may have had on the previous Hard Drive.

Thank you,

P.S.

The computer is a Dell Inspirion 2200 Notebook.

I was given a pc (asus K8N-E) the problem is that although it powers up, mobo light works cpu fan spins and system fan spins front panel lights work, the hard drive and optical drive wont power up unless i disconnect the IDE cables, when disconnected the hard drive spins and the light on and drawer on the optical drive work. its as if the IDE is somehow disabled, i have tried different cables but to no avail any help appreciated.

Answer:Hard drive and optical drive only work when IDE cables are disconnected

hi

check that the cables are plugged in the right way round, the red stripe on the cable goes next to the power socket on the device and the board is usually marked pin 1 or has a dot on it.

does it happen when you plug in a single device or only when you plug in both.

are you using seperate cables or are you putting both devices on the same cable.

Hi,
I am trying to replace my optical drive with a HDD Caddy with a Seagate 2TB HDD. When I start my laptop with the drive installed both my bios and os don't recognized it. If I start my laptop and then slide the caddy into the optical bay my os picks it up immediately. If I restart the computer the drive is gone. I have discussed with the caddy manufacturer and they aren't sure what the issue is. I have updated all my drivers and my bios via Dell's website.
Can anyone provide some insight?
Thank you.

Is it possible to replace the optical drive with a 2nd hard drive?  I've installed a 128GB SSD as my primary drive on my Y560.  I'm interested in disassembling the laptop and replacing the Optical Drive with a secondary hard drive for storage.  It doesn't appear that the DVD Drive is designed to be removed, but is it possible with some effort to replace?

I recently replaced my hard drive with a SSD and put a fresh install of Windows 7 Home Premium edition on my laptop. I've had a lot of trouble getting all the drivers to work but fixing the optical drive seems to be giving me the most trouble. I've looked around on this website and on several forums. I've gone into the device manager where the DVD/CD-ROM DRIVE entry only appears when I select to see hidden devices, and even then it is not the optical drive that is installed but something to do with my android phone so scanning for hardware changes makes no difference. I have seen tips on going into the registry to delete two files named upperfilters and lowerfilters, neither of which exist in my registry.  The drive can be seen from my BIOS but appears nowhere else. When I insert a disc I can hear and feel it moving so the hardware is still functioning.  When I installed the new hard drive, I did not unplug anything else so I am certain that the drive is just as connected as it was before when it was working properly. Any other suggestions?

Answer:How to change hard drive on system without optical drive

Hello, I would suggest to use Acronis True Image. Make a clone of your hdd onto an usb-drive.  Then attach your new hdd into your system (the other way round won´t work!)and play back the image from your external hdd. Please read here for further suggestions.Message Edited by Agotthelf on 21-11-2008 07:31 PM

I'm on the verge of buying a T430, and I was wondering whether having an SSD as my primary hard drive (on which I would have the operating system only) and then using a 500GB hard drive in place of the optical drive. My reasoning is I want a fast boot time, and also the storage on the SSDs aren't that big, and I do need a lot of space. Are there any performance issues (eg slower) when using the added hard drive?  I was thinking of installing all my programs on there.  I read on a YouTube comment that having the second hard drive creates 'bottlenecking' and slows things down.

Answer:T430 and hard drive instead of optical drive

Be sure the SSD height profile is compatible with the 430. I believe they're using a thinner drive not the 9.5mm is standard. Verify before you order a drive if thats the system you're wanting.Momentus drives are 9.5mm from the data sheet of their website. As for slowing down I say not. You can put the swap file etc on the 2nd drive and that would reduce write access to the SSD for temp data. You will need the storage and or target for a backup image so IMO its a must.

Hi Guys  So I decided to replace my internal Optical Drive with the orginal Hard Drive that came with the laptop, I used a caddy which I bought from eBay and all went well and works well. I have noticed one issue though, with the original Optical Drive there is a little screw which goes through the end of the optical drive and into the main section of the laptop under the keyboard (I hope people know what I mean). Anyway with the replacement caddy it does not have this hole for the screw so I am unable to secure the caddy in place.  What this all means is that I can literally pull the caddy out of laptop while using it as it's not secured, has anyone else performed this replacement and had this issue and know what can be done to secure it (other than blue tack or something). Thanks in advance

Hey all! Just posting to see if anyone has experience with upgrading their Lenovo laptops/notebooks with 2nd hard drives through the use of hard drive caddys? I have been looking through this website which includes many 'how-to's and video guides on the process. There are also plenty on youtube. However I am reluctant to go out on a limb.http://www.newmodeus.com They have entire production lines dedicated to certain brands of laptops and notebooks and this includes Lenovo. However, I couldn't find one for my specific model, G570, but I am able to find them for the G430/G530G560. I have an Edge 14. Intel i3 M370 model.  I ordered a OBHC and installed a 160 Gb SATA drive, loaded with WIN 7.  In the main drive bay I have an Ubuntu OS setup.Trying to set up a dual boot configuration.  But, when I boot the drive and enter the BIOS set up, the drive in the caddy doesn't show.  If I let it boot from the main drive, Ubuntu starts up. If I put the Ubuntu drive in the caddy and nothing in the main bay, "NO OPERATING SYSTEM." When I look at the computer in Ubuntu, the OS7 drive is there.  All three partitions (Lenovo, OS and startup).  I can mount them, etc.  When I use Disk Utility in Ubuntu, the drive shows up listed under the SATA controller and is located at position 2 of the SATA bus.   I updated the BIOS and it is now 1.26. Still no sign of the HDD in the caddy.  Very odd.  When I power up the computer, the LED in the caddy does light up. When I run sudo update-grub in Ubuntu, the WIN 7 loader shows up in the list.  So a bootable OS is seen.  But if I select WIN 7 loader in the GRUB list at boot, I get a "no such drive" message, and am lead back the the GRUB list. In the BIOS, the config menu, the startup list only includes HDD0.   Is there some secret BIOS trick I need to play?  Correct me if I'm wrong, but there aren't any jumper settings, etc. on a SATA drive, right?  Nothing there to change. Any suggestions would be very much appreci... Does anyopne know if it's possible to buy an adaptor to fit a 3.5" hard drive into an optical drive bay in my PC tower case?I want to add a shiny new 1TB drive to fill up with video but the two hard drive bays are already occupied. I'd rather not take one of them out and I'd prefer the new drive be mounted internally, rather than attached via USB. I'm not after a removable caddy or anything like that, just something that will allow me to securely fit the drive. There's no problem with having enough SATA sockets in the motherboard or power connectors, it's just the mounting problem. Any thoughts?PaulC

Hi guys, i wonder if you can offer any ideas here. I have a brand new T420s which came with an optical slot place holder piece of plastic. I removed this and popped in a 'Lenovo DVD Multi IV DVD Multi Recorder CD-RW' P/N 45N7453. It clicked into place fine, but the power light on it does not come on and the eject button does not work. This same drive works fine in 2 other T420s laptops my colleagues have, so the drive is ok. I tried disabling the optical drive in the bios, rebooting, re-enabling, rebooting but nothing. Is there anything else i can try or would you say its a board issue and i'm stuck with it ?

I have an Aspire E5-551 that I recently upgraded.  I replaced the stock hard drive with a Crucial SSD and maxed out the onboard RAM (came with 6gb, now has 16gb).  The system is blazing fast now.  Right now, I'm using the original HDD in an external USB enclosure for storage.  I wanted to look into the feasibility of putting the storage HDD onboard by means of a caddy that fits into the side bay that would otherwise fit the optical drive.  I have been able to find all kinds of options for the parts for this, but I wanted to check with the folks on this forum to see if anyone has ad any experiences with this idea and how well it works.  Any info anyone can pass along would be helpful.  Thanks.

I've got 2 hard drives, thinking about at least one more for a RAID system or for nothing but storage, and dumping DVD backups of everything I've got altogether because of eventual data degradation on that medium, physical space in the closet, cost of DVDs, etc. Is this smart or dumb?

Answer:Better to backup with a hard drive or optical media?

Hello Colonel,

I think a backup on a HDD would be the safest of the two. Having backups of anything critical on separate multiple media is the best method though. This way if one should fail for whatever reason, you will still have another backup of it.

I've purchased this optical hard drive caddy. In hopes of running an SSD from the optical bay. (Essentially an SSD is just an oversized flash drive that doesn't emit much heat, so a poorly ventilated optical bay is perfect for the drive IMO). I want to keep all my documents, movies, songs, etc on a slow 1TB hard drive in the hard drive bay. 1.) Does anyone know if there are any hardware limitations that will not enable the hard drive convertor to actually function?2.) Does anyone know what the speed is of the SATA port in the HDD bay and the ODD bay? (do they differ?) Thanks

Answer:Can the SL410 Optical Bay support a hard drive?

Hi, unkthinkpad. I am also thinking about getting optical hard drive caddy:http://www.ebay.com/itm/2nd-hard-drive-Caddy-Lenovo-ThinkPad-SL400-SL410-/280713849154?pt=PCC_Drives... However searching the internet did not reveal much discussion about SL410 and second hard drive. If I may ask, how the experience was for you and what was the speed for optical bay? Presently I am using SSD as main drive and HDD as external USB drive. But it is a little bit irritating when I want to take computer with me. Since I don't use the optical drive that much, thought I could put second drive there. I was thinking about putting HDD in there, but you have a point, that due to not so good ventilation that may not be a wise thing. Hope to hear from You.Thanks for reading.

I've gone through several of these caddys.

My laptop (a Lenovo G500) continually has the same problem; it refuses to recognize the HD I connect to it using an Optical Bay Caddy I purchased on eBay (I've tried several, it does this with all of them). The first time I connected it it saw the Hard Drive and worked perfectly. I rebooted and it hasn't shown up in the BIOS's Boot Screen or anywhere else since.

Here are some pictures of the caddy itself: https://imgur.com/a/qEXbq#0

I have an Asus CRW- 522A, that repeatedly ejects once i switch on the computer. When it ejects, i reinsert it, and it reejects over and over. If i insert any cd in, it stops ejecting, and a yellow and a red flash alternates on the drive LED.
If i manage to start the windows, the drive is not detected.

I tried the drive in another motherboard, intel 965, but the ejecting problem at computer start wont allow the motherboard to boot.

I think i need to reflash the drive, or is it a hardware problem?
obviously i cant flash the drive without bein detected. I'd appreciate ur opinions all, thnx 4 ur time readin this

Answer:Optical drive problem

Howdy,

If you could firstly boot into safe mode and see if the issue occurs there, if it does then the issue is related to the hardware, if it does not then i'm guessing the issue is related directly to software, settings or anything else Operating System related.

If the issue goes away in BIOS, then boot the system into Safe Mode and see if the issue exists there, post back and let us know how it goes. One last thing, does this ejecting happen whilst you are offline (not connected to the internet?).

Edit: One last test, remove the IDE cable from the CD-ROM after trying the above and see if the issue occurs whilst the cable is unplugged - if it does then the issue is due to a hardware fault and will need to be replaced (cheapest option).

Nick.

My PC has three optical drives designated as Drives D, E and F respectively. These are SATA drives and all are of the same type and manufacturer. Drive D will do everything it was designed to do, that is, read, write , play game CDs, burn and rip Audios CDs, etc. However, Drives E and F has problems such as the following:
(1) When I click on the game to play, it will ask to insert the game CD although the CD is already in the drive.
(2) When I try to "burn" an Audio CD, it will ask to insert the blank CD although the blank CD is already in the drive.
Note however that I can insert an Audio CD and play it. Also when I go to "Computer" and click on the drive, it is recognized and in Properties it shows no problem with the drive.
I tried swapping Drives D and E and it did not make any difference. I also did it with Drive F but same problem indicating that the three drives are OK. I also tried swapping terminals but still no joy. Shouldn't all three drives be able to do the same thing? Also I bought a new drive and placed it Drive E's position and it worked flawlessly but when I tried it in Drive E and F position, I experienced the same problem. I appreciate any help.

Answer:Problem with Optical Drive

It looks like Windows 'sees' drive E as first and if it can't find a disk there it gives up.

What do you mean by 'swapping terminals' ? What version of Windows is it ?

Hello again, my computer has an optical drive problem, whenever i try to install a game, it will try for a few seconds to read it, but then gives up. My computer model is a Compaq Presario SR1630NX and my father is thinking about putting his Optical Drive (from his Compaq Presario SR1750NX) into my computer.
Is this a very complicated procedure?
Where do we find the drivers and how do we install them?

Answer:Optical Drive Problem

Hi

No its not a difficult proceedure at all, basically take from one PC and pop in the other and connect the IDE ribbon and power cable up and boot then PC, the drivers are loaded by Windows.

But what you could try just before doing this is to delete the upper and lower filters as these can cause issues with reading/writing to disk on your PC. To do this follow this info HERE or HERE

Hi people,This is my first post here so I hope this is appropriate.  I am in Australia, and bought an Edge 15 laptop back in January this year.  I like everything about the laptop except one thing; the optical (DVD) drive cannot be made to play DVDs from other regions.  Although other brands of drives are made to be region locked this can be fixed easily with software.  However, no software works with this particular drive so there's nothing I can do except get an external drive which I've done, but it's a pain in the ass.   The drive that came with the laptop is a Mat**bleep**a UJ-890 (never again will I buy a laptop with a Mat**bleep**a drive!!!!) and what I would love to do is buy a replacement drive that will fit in the Edge 15 slot, but I don't know if there are any other brands that will fit.  Can anyone help me out?? And if there are not, then Lenovo please take note: do NOT source your optical drives from Mat**bleep**a in future!  I don't know about the US, but in Australia region locking, especially region locking that cannot be changed, is anti-competitive and it should not be encouraged. Thanks in advance everyone.

I don't use my optical drive that often, so it's taken me a while to convince myself that there really is a problem with my 6-month-old T61. I have a HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-U10N DVD-RAM/CD-RW drive. When I put a DVD or CD into the drive to play, everything is fine - the software to play the DVD or CD loads, and the disc plays. However, about 10-25 minutes in, the playback starts getting jerky and the drive starts making noise. Eventually, playback completely stops, and the drive continues making various jerky clicking noises. After I open the drive and give it a break for 15-30 minutes, sometimes I can then continue playing the CD or DVD. Other times, the drive will play for another 5-10 minutes before another round of jerky playback and drive noises. I don't understand what's going on, and it's really annoying. I know it's not a disc problem because this happens with every single disc I play, whether it's burned, brand-new from the store, or rented from Netflix. Does anyone know what's happening or how to fix it?Message Edited by mouseclick on 09-19-2008 07:00 PM

The problem I'm having is whenever Vista hibernates the CD-ROM drive will not work anymore, and is then detected as a HD DVD-ROM drive and two other CD-ROM drives appear in My Computer.

The drive is a Sony NEC Optiarc 20X DVD+-R DVD burner IDE Model AD-7190A.

When looking through Device Manager it says I have the latest driver for it.

Can you update the firmware on the drives? It sounds more like a firmware issue than drivers.

Hey guys,
I am having a problem with a computer running Windows XP SP2 (Home)
The problem is that the optical drives will not show up in "My computer" in a normal boot of windows. The drives at first showed in Device Manager with an exclamation point citing error 37 (Windows is unable to load drivers for this device) which I was able to fix by deleting the lower and upper filter entrys in the registry. The drives now show up fine in Device Manager but still nothing in My Computer. I have verified that the drives are working by running diagnostics with a PC Doctor boot disc and by restarting into Safe Mode in which they test just fine, reading any cd or dvd that I throw at them. I'm baffled. I have also scanned for malware, run several registry scans, ran sfc /scannow, pretty much everything that I can think of besides doing a operating system repair or reinstallation (Which we are trying to avoid due to large amounts of programs installed).

Any ideas? Any thanks is always appreciated!

Thanks much,
Randy O.:major

I have a Thinkpad R51 model 1830PVU with a TEAC DW-225 ultrabay CD drive.  In device manager, I get a code 39 that says the TEAC device driver may be missing or corrupt.  I tried to uninstall and reinstall the device, but it did not help. When I search for a device driver at Lenovo Support, it seems like I need to create a bootable CD to try to fix the problem. However, since the TEAC DW-225 does not work, I can't burn a CD to fix the problem with the drive! Is there any way to simply download a driver without burning a bootable CD?  Any other ideas? Thanks.

Hi, rayped

Microsoft makes a tool called Fix It that may be able to help in this situation. The error code that keeps generating is one that means the device cannot start because it cannot find the relevant driver. You can try running this tool and see if it helps.

I have two optical drives in my PC (details of system are in my sig)

Here's the problem, I just recently re-installed my XP-professional from scratch (Had to change hd, long story). I installed the correct chipset drivers, processor drivers, display drivers, etc. I have all the latest Microsoft updates (downloaded automatically every night). Everything seemed to be working beautifully.

Then, as of a week or so ago, both my optical drives have begun to act strange:

When I put a CD in either of them, they will not read it. As in, they will recognize that there is a CD in there (My Computer drive Icon will change from default to "CD-Rom") and that's it! Once I put the CD in, they won't even continue spinning, or TRY to read it. It is as if they know it's in there, but they forget. The exact same thing happens with a DVD.

If I try to see what's on the CD (thru My computer), it says "please insert a CD" or shows the CD as blank. These are original software/game CDs that I never had problems with. Furthermore, autorun doesn't work from the CDs either. And this problem doesn't just stop at that, no matter WHAT kind of CD I put in there (Software, Autorun, Burned, Blank), it will not let me open it or will say there is nothing in there.

Now bear in mind, the icon of the drive does change to the generic "CD Rom" Icon (or DVD-rom) if the CD is in there (in My Computer), but when I double-click on it to open it, it just says "Please inse... Read more

Answer:Peculiar optical drive problem...

Oh and, just a few more details in case you guys need them...

BOTH the drives appear, for all purposes, to be working and installed perfectly. There are no exclaimation marks in Device manager and no error messages anywhere, startup or otherwise. As I mentioned earlier, BOTH the drives actually know there is a CD in them because their Icon changes to a generic "CD-Rom" (or DVD-Rom) when you put something in. But when you try to open it, it's either blank or you get a message, please insert a disc in the drive.

The IDE cables are connected correctly and the slave and master jumpers are correct as well. And yes, these drives used to work PERFECTLY before. This started happening about 8 days ago.

I installed the chipset drivers when I installed Windows and since then the drives had worked fine. I am trying to think what sort of update I did a week ago but the only thing I can think of is windows automatic updates.

Just to be sure, I installed my nVidia ForceWare Storage/IDE drivers, and the drive situation stayed the same. Initially I did not have the nVidia IDE drivers installed because someone had recommended that the MS ones would work better. Without those nVidia drivers the drives had worked fine previously so I know that wouldn't have been the problem, but I tried anyways.

I also took one of the drives off and tried different steps with the one LG DVD-RW drive in there by itself, nada. I am stumped now!

Hi all, I just recieved by new y510p in the mail today. While trying to open my optical drive for the first time, I noticed that it seemed to be having a lot of difficulty opening. When I push the button to open it, it disengages the internal lock but it only opens a fraction. There's some whirring noises like it's trying to open further but doesn't. After a couple of whirs and buzzes, it goes quiet. In order to get the optical drive to open further, I have tug on it a bit; a bit more than I'm used to with other laptops. DVD/CDs seem to work fine once they are in the drive. It's just the thing doesn't want to pop upen. Have others experienced something similar? Is this the way the optical drive is for these laptops or is there something wrong? The computer is literally been in my possession for less than a day. I'd had to have such problems right out of the gate. Thanks for the help. Patrick

Answer:y510p optical drive problem

you can try taking it out of your laptop then use a pin and push it down the release lock hole so drive opens if that opens normal and it glides out and in without any issues then it isnt your driver having a problem then it's probably something on laptop chassi causing your dvd player to have trouble opening so then you should investigate around ultrabay area for anything thats preventing the dvd player to open propertly

Hi there pals. Happy and prosperous new year!

I have this problem: I want to make my computer boot from the windows 7 cd in the optical drive, but although it asks me if I want to do that, there is no option to "press any key" and it goes on to book from the hard drive. Despite my pressing a key at the question it goes on with the hard drive boot. It used to boot properly from this windows 7 cd some time ago, but something must have happened in the DOS or CMOS part or something like that.

How could I remedy the situation?

Anticipated thanks and regards with warmest season greetings.

Answer:Optical drive boot problem

Make sure that your drive is a DVD drive (look at faceplate). The Win7 medium is a DVD.

Check BIOS and make sure that the boot priority has the optical drive before the HD.

Is this an original DVD? If not, perhaps you did not include a boot sector when making the DVD. Files alone do not a bootdisk make.

On my gramp's computer, we're having the problem that if more than one user is logged in, only one of them is able to make use of the DVD drive. For example, one user can put a CD or DVD in and use it fine, but for any other user, the drive just looks empty.

If a user who sees the empty drive signs out other user's accounts, they can then see the drive and its contents.

It's kind of annoying, and especially baffling. I originally thought the drive was on its way out, but that no longer seems to be the case.

Any ideas? Running XP SP3.

Hi guys! I'm new to this forum so bear with me;

Recently I uninstalled a program, and I wish to reload it - When I attempted this, the CD did not AutoPlay. I thought this strange, but proceeded anyway to explore the CD and set it up myself. But this did not work either, and I could not load any of the shortcuts or icons on the CD. I tried this on both drives and even mounted it on an image drive after burning an image to no avail.

I've used many other technical advice, but none seem to work in my case.
So far I've:

Edited the registry so its "perfect", but I may have missed something.
Created and Mounted an image of the CD and it still didnt work.
Tried the CD on two other home PC's, still no luck.
Tried other CDs, and experienced the same problem - although a blank CD/DVD can be read as a blank CD/DVD. I haven't experimented too much with this, though.

Much help would be appreciated greatly! I'm usually fairly good at this but I fear I'll wreck my poor PC trying out other methods.

Oh, and my OS is Windows XP Home Edition SP3

(As a side note, my Windows Disk Defrag won't let me defrag my C:\ drive but my partitioned back up drive is fine - I used an external one, which worked, but would like microsoft's one working as well. It said "Disk Defragmenter could not start" Thanks again!)

I have been trying to install into my friends computer a second optical drive a DVD-RW. He already has a DVD-Rom/CD-RW. Here's what I've done;

1: Installed & screwed the DVD-RW drive into the second case bay below the current drive.
2: Linked a connector strip from the same IDE ribbon cable already linking the other drive so both drives are on the same lead.
3: Connected a spare 4 pin power connector to the DVD-RW drive
4: Booted the PC, both drives LED's flash as they do on power up.
5: Now heres the problem explained below;

The pair of optical drives are now both installed and connected on the same IDE ribbon cable with each using a power connector off the PSU.

Neither of the drives are detetced by the pc on bootup, bios or in windows. I disconnected the DVD-RW leaving the original drive back as it was, on a second pc boot up its all back to normal, for now my friends DVD-Rom/CD-RW is disconnected and the DVD-RW is in use, what I can't seem to do is get both drives working together on 1 IDE cable, 4 hours of tinkering and no luck.

The PC's mainboard doesn't have a spare IDE slot to use the drive on it's own cable, he doesn't use the floppy disk drive so I also tried using the IDE cable from that, original DVD-Rom/CD-RW works this time but no DVD-RW detected.

I did some searching on google and found info about installing a second optical drive and the photo diagrams and instructions was explaining the same ribbon cable can be used, it's the jumper se... Read more

Answer:Optical Drive Installation Problem

yes the only thing you have missed is setting the jumpers. on the back of the optical drive, where you plugged in the 4 pin molex ( power) connector, there will be a spot with small pins in two rows. look at the diagram below to see what i mean. Now what you want to do is look at the older (first drive) and make sure the little jumper is covering the 2 pins marked master. make sure that this drive is connected to the very end of the ribbon cable. then look at the new (second drive) and set the jumper to slave. this drive will be connected to the middle connector on the ribbon cable. if you don't know which pins are which, look on top of the drive and there is usually a diagram explaining it.

i wont explain what the cable select is because without knowing which drives you are using you may get more confused. Good Luck, and post back if it all works out.

Why don't you provide optical drive downloads? There has been issues with the optical drive since Microsoft introduced Windows 10 and none of you has done anything to work toward solutions to this problem. The device manager/Run/ Upper filters option doesn't work for everybody, especially since its a hardware malfunction. You have consistently ignored this issue. There is no LiveChat for Lenovo and Microsoft can only do so much.

Answer:Optical drive problem with Windows 10

This is most likely a Windows 10 issue and not a problem that can be fixed by a device driver.
If you are still having a problem, try the steps below and see if it fixes your problem.

Create a System Restore Point just as a precaution

Right click on Start and select System
Select System Protection from left pane.
Select the System Restore tab and click on Create
Give the Restore Point any name you prefer, and click Create again to create the Restore Point.

Delete ATA Channels from Device Manager

Right click on Start and select Device Manager
Double Click on IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controllers
Select the View pulldown menu from the top of Device Manager, and select Show Hidden Devices
Right click on each instance of ATA Channel # listed under the IDE/ATA/ATAPI Controllers section and select Delete

e.g.    ATA Channel 0
          ATA Channel 0
          ATA Channel 1

Once all are deleted, reboot and see if your issue is resolved.

Good Luck,

Hi, I've been having problems with my Optical Drives lately. Everytime I insert a CD/DVD into one of my drives, the information of the disk on My Computer does not change, it stays with the media that was in the drive when the computer boots up.

For example, when put something like Doom 3 into my drive, the information of the disk doesnt change at all. The icon and the name stays the same. When theres nothing in the drive, the drive will show something like CD-RW (E:\) and it doesnt change when I put a CD in there.

I'm just wondering if you guys can help me with my problem. All my drives are set to DMA mode.

Hi there I have recent bought a Vaio VGN-FW11E and also bought a Panasonic UJ-210 BD drive. The BD drive does not come with this this laptop as standard but the VGN-fW11S (next model up) does with the model UJ-220 BD drive. Thinking it would be straight swap guess what fat chance.
When I changed the driver hardware did not show up in device manger. Even though VGN-FW11s has the same processor, graphics chip the only difference 50 GB of hard drive & 1GB of ram.
The thing is when I swapped the drives in my older Viao VGN- FS315S no problems apart from the graphics chip not rendering but recongizes the hardware though. So what next is a hardware, driver or bios problem. The DVD drive does not even boot up new os software.

I uninstalled the device in Device Manager. Probably shouldn't have done that.  Now all I see there after rebooting is a generic CD-ROM Drive with the little conflict/problem icon.

When I put a disc in the DVD tray I hear the drive working but that's it. The computer doesn't see the drive.

Hello everyone. I have a z500 since 2013 and all worked properly until I made the update to Windows 10 a couple of months ago. Since then I had the brightness problem twice and I took care of it but now another one appeared. The optical drive (MAT**bleep**A DVD-RAM UJ8C2) can't write any cd's or dvd's although I can read them without a problem. Whenever I try to write one I receive a message that the writing speed is too high for that disc although is the right speed for that disc. I made a little research and I found that the driver is up to date (version 10.0.10586.0). I hope you can help me. Thanks in advance.

Hello,This problem appears after I have format my HDD and reinstal new operating system (W7). Before I have W7 too, but original preinstaled. I have read some solutions for this issue, but nothink solved this problem. I have tried remove and reinstal DVD drive, etc. When I work on this laptom so after few minutes the optical drive is powered off and I can not repower on. I think that the solution should be into ThinkVantage Power manager but I can not find where. There is no item something as "Optical drive power off" or similar. may be it can be under  some other items.  Can anybody give other working solutions?Sorry for my bad English! Thanks for advices!

I've a problem with my optical drive. After finalizing the disk during burning when it is again inserted it is just throwing out the disk without reading the contents in it. But it is reading the disks which were previously written using the same optical drive. Those disks which are thrown out when inserted into another optical drive of another system it is reading them.
I'm not able to find solution for this. Someone please help me out.

Hi everyone, my problem is not the compatibility of the drives currently on the market. I just bought a nice M100 P 1.3 GHz IR/BT/LAN/WFb/g but without a drive. As I looked for one the problem incuding the add on accesories occured. Some kind of rack and a reduction is needed, but I can't find any of this stuff on toshiba pages. In fact the new drives are not compatible with my NB <so they say >. Can anyone advise me what to do about it? I'm just waiting for my OS to crush, and what then? No cd no OS no work, NO WAY! Thanks for all your help.

Answer:Need to buy optical drive for M100 - accersories problem

I believe it will be much easier if you purchase an external pcmicia card driver which is compatible with the computer and which will allow you to recover the system in the future .

I'm using Windows XP SP3. I've recently upgraded to an LG Internat Super Multi DVD Rewriter (GH22NP20) and have been using it merrily burning CDs with no issue.
I was going to burn an iso image to a DVD this morning but unfortunately while windows recognises the blank media as what it is (DVD-R) Nero picks it up as a CD. I decided to try burn the project anyway but it simply informed me that what I was trying to write to disc was too large for a CD and asked if I wanted to burn it to a DVD. I clicked "OK", it spat the disc back at me and then popped up with a window telling me I have a DVD in the drive and a CD is required.

I have downloaded the latest firmware (2.0) but haven't installed it. Partially because I'm paranoid as I downloaded it from somewhere other than LG because I couldn't find it on their site, just a message that this latest greatest brand new drive is discontinued. But mainly because I believe it should work without the latest firmware seeming I'm using Princo DVDs that I've had for ages (since prior to the currently installed firmware 1.4)

Any ideas to help prevent my PC from a horrible death under a fire engine's tyre would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I am confused about the customization page of W510. Optical device: Multi Recorder Optical Drive. Can it write/record blu-ray disc? There is no explanation or no other device to select. If it can write/record blu-ray disc then it is ok. If not then how can I add a blu-ray recorder/writer in my customization? There is no option to select such device there.

I tried booting from a knoppix live cd that worked on another computer and it wouldnt boot either. I have no idea of any what to do, since it wont boot off of an external HDD internal optical drive, external optical drive, and any help is greatly appreciated.

What are the current boot options...as set in your BIOS?

If not listed as the first boot option...it's unlikely that the system would boot from either drive.

Hello, I'm going to be replacing my primary HDD (1tb) with a SSD and will place the HDD in a drive caddy, replacing the existing DVD drive. 3rd party vendors list both 12mm and 9.5mm drive caddys for this - I imagine a newer laptop would have the smaller form factor, unfortunately this spec info is not available from the manual or Lenovo tech support - does anyone happen to know? Might be best if I yank the drive and measure it or take it with me to buy a caddy in person, rather than order online. Thanks for reading,Paul

I have an Alienware Aurora R6 and am frustratingly trying to upgrade the optical drive to one that can read Blu-rays. Does anyone know what drive size specs I should be looking for? It's a low profile drive that is even smaller than a standard laptop optical drive. I tried posting this to an existing Aurora R6 article (https://www.windowscentral.com/how-upgrade-alienware-aurora-r5-and-r6), but my reputation here isn't high enough to post to older articles. Thanks any help.
Background in case anyone's interested: When purchasing this computer the only spec*they showed was that it was a 5.25" drive. Assuming it would be a full sized 5.25", I ordered the system with the least expensive DVD option, meaning to switch it out with the Blu-ray drive in my old system. This, of course, didn't work, so eventually I ordered a low profile Blu-ray drive meant for laptops. The slot in the case is too small even for this drive. What grinds my gears about this is that it's obvious that the internal bay (silver*metal part) is big enough for the laptop drive. It's the outer case (black metal part) and front bezel that are the obstructions.

I have an Dell Inspiron 15-5558 and am wanting to swap the optical DVD drive for a Sandisk Ultra II 240GB ssd for the operating system.
I'm quite newbie with modding hardware so just wondering what I would need apart from the hard drive itself.
I know I'll need some sort of bay to hold it in but does anyone know where I would source one to the same specs as the drive so the case is all flush

Answer:Swap Laptop Optical Drive for Solid State Drive

You will probably need some sort of Tray and it's likely to be smaller than the Standard Hard Drive

Hello everyone!

I have been having this issue recently that I need help with. I am fairly clued up when it comes to computers, but this one has me stumped.

I have a COMPAQ Presario F500AU
1.8GHz AMD Turion x64 X2 Duel Core processor
Nvidia GeForce 6100
Broadcom Wireless
15.4" WXGA Widescreen LCD display
Windows 7 Ultimate beta Ver. 1000 (Windows Vista Home Basic was standard with it)

I recently had to take my DVD drive out and re-insert it due to dusty contacts. I put my laptop back together and inserted the DVD drive back in.

Please note, when I did all this, I was wearing a static strap connected to the computer while working on it on an anti-static mat with the mains and battery disconnected from it.

When I insert my DVD drive into the laptop, my laptop lights up, but I get no video signal. After about 30 seconds my computer turns off and on again. If I take my DVD drive out of my laptop, it boots as per normal.

Has anyone got any ideas as to how I could solve this issue?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Cheers,
David

Hello. I had posted a thread a couple months ago on the fact that System #2 has non-functional optical drives in Windows. I can boot CDs from them (Puppy Linux and the Windows Install CD), but as soon as I try to read a CD under Windows, the computer locks up. Today, I figured out it was a problem with a key in the HKLM\System hive of the registry by replacing it with the one in the repair directory and seeing if the DVD-RW drives read the disks correctly. They did, and now here's my question: Unfortunately, using the System hive from the repair directory prevents my system from booting in any other mode besides Safe mode. Is there a way I can isolate the problem and fix it in the original hive, or use the repair directory hive and reinstall all of the drivers?

EDIT: "Reinstall all drivers" should be "amend it to the original hive"

Answer:Update on a previous optical drive problem post

What drivers?
Check your pins to be sure your optical drive is set for Master. Be sure all your cables are right, by unplugging and resetting...
Then you should be able to boot without jumping through hoops.

Answer:Lenova V110-15AST - Problem with optical drive

Hi Lome,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

If the optical drive is not being seen within Windows then shutdown the machine and try accessing the BIOS.
Once off, use the novo button to turn on and choose BIOS setting.

This should show the CDDVD drive, if not then call technical support for inwarranty repair.
Removing the drive and reseating back in place (page 34) can help but if you have a covered warranty then best to avail of the intended service for your machine.

Hope this helps answer your query.
Update us how it goes for you.

Yesterday when I removed CD from my Thinkpad T400 optical disk drive, I guess I pulled it out a bit too harshly. The result was that the CD came out along with that little black circular plastic thing (don't know what is called) stuck in the middle of CD circular hole. I pushed that piece out of the CD and put it back in the center of the optical disk drive.  Now when I put a new CD in the drive I hear some kind of strange noise, sounds like it is wobbling. The only choice is to eject the CD without getting access to the files.  Is there an easy way to set that little plastic circular guy back to its place to stay permanently? Should I use glue or something to make sure it is sticking (just kidding!) If not, any suggestions as where should I take my laptop to be fixed? I live in Boston area. I am out of luck with laptop warranty as it expired a couple of months ago.

Fresh install of Windows 10 on Dell Inspiron M5030 from my KLite USB drive where I have only added the correct, workable AMD-4200 video driver to the normal Windows 10 ISO. Windows 10 is functioning properly EXCEPT my TSST DVD+/-RW TS-L633C shows in Device Manager as DISK DRIVE 01 (which of course is not initialized) instead of showing as TS-L633C in DVD/CD-ROM drives.

I have tried the following:

1: Online updating drivers.

2: Hardware and devices troubleshooter. My problem is not recognized.

3: Uninstall CD/DVD drive driver. Restarted the computer, checked the functionality and the same problem exists.

Per device Manager, I have the standard SATA ACHI controller installed but no ATA channels 1, 2, 3, or 4 and no Standard ACHI 1.0 Serial ATA driver. Since Dell has not "approved" the M5030 for Windows 10, there are no drivers on the Dell M5030 Support website for Windows 10.

Can someone please give me some help please so that I can solve my problem?

Thank you very much.

Hi all, I've recently bought a second hand Lenovo Z580 and the optical drive needs replacing. I've looked up the hardware maintenance guide and it lists the following: ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, PLDS DS-8A8SH

ODD, 12.7MM Rambo, TSST SN-208ABI'm not interested in Blu-ray combo replacement so I haven't listed those. My question is, do I have to get one of the drives listed above or can I get another brand as brand new is cheaper (see below)? https://www.businessdirect.bt.com/products/liteon-8x-internal-slim-dvd-rw-black-oem-ds-8acsh-BY5D.ht... I understand I would need to swap the bezel around :-) Thanks

Thanks for any help in advance, Pete

Answer:Z580 Optical drive (DVD drive) replacement advice?

Hi pete_agreatguy  ,

Greetings.

As Optical Drives are mostly universal , your choice most likely would work as SATA interface. 12.7mm height .
Challenges would only be the fitting with the mounts so do check for return option just in case.

For other resellers, it would be better if there a mention of workable model for match for chassis fittings  .
12.8 cm x 12.6 cm x 1.27 cm (LiteOn 8x Internal Slim) 128 mm x 12.7 mm x 126.1 mm (Sony)BD-5750H as one from the manual .

Hope this helps.

Regards

Hi all

I have installed an optical drive in my computer today and my drive letters were changed. I have changed them back to what they were and after restarting my computer I was unable to log to Windows 8.1 due to the OS being unable to find user profile (my user profile is moved outside of the system drive).

I restored my system to the point from before the new drive installation, but I still would like to change the drive letters around, as some of my software relies on specific directory paths with drive letters.

1. The state from before the installation of the new optical drive.

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
2. The state after installation of the new optical drive:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Optical Drive (F:)
Passport (G:)
Storage (H:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
3. What I'd like to have:

System (C:)
Virtual Box (D:)
Program Files (E:)
Passport (F:)
Storage (G:)
Program Files 2 (I:)
Optical Drive (any letter, preferably X:)

My user profile WAS located in G:\Users

It is now located in H:\Users and I can log in to Windows. After changing the drive letters around to 3. above I can no longer log in, as Windows is unable to find the user profile on H:\Users anymore.

I use EaseUS Partition Master 10.0 to change the drive letters.

Is there any way I can change the drive letters and make Windows aware of user profile path change?

Thanks.

I replaced the hard drives in two X230 tablets today (HGST Z7K320-320, replacing with the same). Everything seems fine, but when the system reboots, it prompts for the hard drive lock password again (normally, it would just reboot without prompting). That wouldn't be a huge deal, but for whatever reason, it simply will not recognize the drive lock password. If I power it down and enter it, then everything is fine, the password is recognized and Windows boots normally. This is a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit btw.  I'm not sure why it's doing this, but the fact that two are having the same issue means something else needs to be done. Both replacement drives are new drives, and I set the drive lock password for both after installation. Has anyone encountered anything like this?

I have heard that enterprise hard drives are more reliable than the standard hard drives in retail or consumer computers. I want to get an external hard drive for extra storage and backup purposes. My desktop and notebooks are the typical computers that are sold to retail customers. Will there be any problems having it access and drive an enterprise hard drive in an external hard drive case? I am thinking to get a fairly large size around 1T so I figure it would have its own power supply and not be powered by the USB drive. Data access will probably be via USB and/or eSata.

Answer:enterprise hard drive as an extra external drive-any problem with this idea

I believe Enterprise drives are more performance based then reliability based. The mechanics are still the same. Usually an enterprise application requires a fast drive, something like a 16MB cache and 15k RPMs is the norm, even if the drive is only 150GB, put those in RAID and you have a very fast access source for a large network.

There of course are slower, and larger backup drives, and tape backups as well... but again I can't imagine that they are any more reliable, if the two drives are comarable in other regards. SATA is Still SATA, though Fibre and SAS might be more reliable than SATA or PATA.

I told my sister I'd help her replace the broken hard drive in her 6 year old HP laptop (G60-120US). We plan to restore the Vista OS that's on the restore disk which came with the machine.

I was concerned about finding a hard drive with the same geometry as the existing drive because I know that was a potential problem some time ago. But then I became convinced that it doesn't matter because ...

1) There's no geometry info on the hard drive currently installed in the laptop (which is a 250GB WD).
2) Sellers of laptop replacement hard drives don't say anything about the geometry of the drives they sell.
and 3) I found this, below, on an HP site but nothing about geometry considerations other then the new AF sector size.
"Customers using original HP supplied recovery discs on systems that have had the 512-byte sector drives replaced with a new Advanced Format HDD may experience issues and may not be able to re-image their system. The most common issue customers will see is that they will not be able to use their current recovery media if they try to install Windows Vista or Windows 7 on AF Drives."
I found other HP info which said only that you need to replace a laptop HD with one of equal or larger capacity.

But then I was looking at hard drives from Discount18, an Amazon seller, and their web site said that once you've replaced a HD with one of their drives you have to do a full OS install, you cannot use the restore disk. I asked about that and got this res... Read more

Answer:Replacing a Laptop Hard Drive. Is Drive Geometry a Potential Problem?

Sorry for tAking so long, a laptop drive is any 2.5" drive, either regular or ssd will be fine.

You will need to reinstall your OS, if you have the disks, just load from there. I believe your quote is referring to using the HP recovery disks, but your disk may be different.

Honestly, your best solution is to get a copy of vista and use your serial to install a clean copy, though you will need to get your drivers from HP.

I bought a Y560 laptop October 2010 with 32GB SSD / 500GB HDD because of it's promotion of this new rapid drive technology in Hong Kong, and everything goes fine for few months. Last week, I powered my laptop normally but the windows loads to the repair screen automatically. After self-restart, "Operating System not found" is shown and no further operation. Then I tried to use Onekey recovery to rescue my OS, but after I knew all data would be initialized after using, I chose not to continue and tried to plug out the hard drive and restore my data via other computer in accordance to the Lenovo's suggestion. Unfortunately, the major partition was not readable by windows. The next day, I brought it to the service centre, and asked them how can I rescue my data. They said the same procedure that I've did that unplugging my hard drive and copying my data via other computer. Of course, I've told them I've performed the same task and still not work and asked them to demonstrate for me, but they said they haven't got any spare machine to do demonstration. After that, they tried to repair my laptop with windows installation disk, but I've questioned them there is a notice that to use Onekey recovery to perform system maintenance, they replied that is a standard procedure of repairing services. 3 Hours after, I still could not get the corresponding answer how can I rescue my data from my hard drive and got these responses: 1. i'm using windows 7, my external hard drive shows up in my devices and printers section but it won't show up as a drive, so i can't view any files in that external hard drive. if i put a memory card in, it shows up as a drive and a flag shows up for when i want to unplug that drive and it asks if i want to remove my external hard drive too.

normally when i turn on the external hard drive it autoplays but it doesn't do that anymore.

i don't understand why it shows up in my devices and printers but not as a drive when i open windows explorer.

i've looked into the external hard drives properties and it all says that the device is working properly.

Answer:problem with external hard drive not showing as a drive in windows 7

Go into Control Panel (classic view) ---> Administrative Tools ---> Computer Management ---> Disk Management.

In bottom-right pane, if you see a horizontal band representing a drive with no drive-letter assigned to it, that's the cause of your problem. You need to give it a drive-letter:

Right-click that horizontal band and choose "Change drive letter and paths".
