Preferred Solution: I partioned my WD 250gb into two seperate ones, now what?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Answer: I partioned my WD 250gb into two seperate ones, now what?

You are done.
Windows is installed on C: no?
The partitions on your removable USB drive can be used for more storage, backups.

I currently have windows 8 installed. I wish to install another windows 8 os on a separate hdd on the same pc. I wish to do this because I share this pc with my brother who is paranoid that my constant tweaking somehow breaks his games installs. Is dual booting two windows 8 installations possible? If it is, what is the best way of going about it? I have an external hard drive that I backup all of my partitions to using acronis, so I'm not too worried about breaking something.

Answer:Dual boot 2 seperate windows 8 installs on seperate hdd's

1. Press whatever key (ex: F11) it shows to boot to your motherboard's boot menu, and select to boot from the DVD or USB.

2. On the Where do you want to install Windows? screen select empty partition or for example "Drive 1 Unallocated Space", and then select Next.

3. After the Windows 8 installation you will choose which operating system you want to use.

I know I could probably do this by attaching 3 screens (I say screens- but these will be big projectors) and dragging them into the respective monitor... But that is rather a pain (and require you looking right at the screens to configure correctly).

So is there any app that will let me run 3 different things on 3 different attached screens?

Answer:Show 3 seperate apps on 3 seperate screens

Use UltraMon, (Link) ,create a shortcut for each of the programs, right click on it and in the properties you will have an ultramon-window tab.

Select the monitor you want to start the application on in the tab, any connected will show up, and when you click the shortcut it will start there.

Drop the shortcut in your startup folder to automate the process if needed for a trade show setup, etc..

Ok so im running windows 7 and have no speakers, just headphones for sound. As now i use dual monitors, (one being my 50" that my girlfriend watches netflix, movies, etc with ) and all sound plays thru the TV but i want to make it so she can hear her show, and i can plug my headphones in to listen to my games without interupting her show, please help. Also screen share works best for me unless u have detailed directions which i can follow, thanks.

skype: dboi2424

Answer:Want to have seperate sounds from seperate monitors

Can't be done. All sound plays though whatever is set as the default audio device, and there can only be one default device. You could switch the sound back to your computers audio card but you'll get your game sound and the movie sound track.

the d:\ dirve can be deleted but make sure your system backups, and OS re-install may be hidden there

If you want to delete it you may need to use a 3rd party disk amangement app like paragons disk suite.

hope this helps

Think I made a mistake, as other thread with my other problem, I made C drive 8mb and D: 38 gb. I cant install alot of things that dont give me a option where to install, like Windows SP 2. So...obviously I dont have enough space. Any way to put couple gbs from drive d to drive c without reinstalling windows or deleting stuff?

Answer:How to put more space from partioned hd?

You need a non destructive partition manager I.E. Partition Magic or something like that. I have only used partition manager so maybe someone can tell you a reliable one thats free.

Just curious but why on earth would you make an 8 mb primary partition?

Question: partioned drives

So basically I inherited my son's tower, which he had the hard drive configured into 3 partions, the c: was only like 52g and the majority of the storage was partioned to the d:, so I was trying to merge the since everything I was installing was going to c; which was almost out of room, and I was too lazy to figure out how to make them all go to d:. I was not paying close attention to what I was doing and I believe I made the d:/ active and then rebooted. Well now I have nothing. I believe I made it the active boot drive and I now need help to fix it. The system did NOT come with any windows disk and I cant seem to even get to the bios, Any Help would be greatly appreciated

I went to, computer mgmt, deleted D: now it appear as an unallocated space, how can i remove that and make c: so that i can use the remaining spcae in C: ?

Hmm don't know how to do it via windows management. The best program for Partitioning is Partition Magic 8

It can quickly an easily get you those desired results but it's not a free program.

Not sure if they have a free trial though that'll let you do a couple operations

whenever i have moved music to d drive software like media player etc does not find it. what shall i do

i hope i explained clearly

sorry couldnt find any other thread that focused on this particular issue i have

laptop stats if it helps is

Answer:partioned drive on laptop help

The only way your computer would slow down due to a hard drive is if:
1) It's dying
2) It is fragmented
3) You are out of space completely (less than 1 Gig)

As for your problem, you should be able to change the location of your "My Documents" folder by right clicking on it in the start menu and choosing "properties". There should be a locations tab where you can set the location.

I am not sure if you have to set up a new "My Documents" location and then transfer the files or if Windows will transfer your files for you.

It will be fine.

If it still has that question at the boot, you can DL Easy BCD and use that to scrap the option panel.

I repartioned the hard drive, and moved the HP Recovery from the end of the main partition. Now, when I start up, I get the message that the moved partition has to be checked. If I let the timer time out and go into the partition check, it counts down to 1 second and stops. Nothing happens. If I press any key during the initial countdown, then Windows 7 loads up nice and pretty. I would like to know if there is a location in the registry that I can alter/eleminate, such as
In theory, as I understand it, the machine will start up and rewrite new corrected data.

Answer:Re-partioned the hard drive

Welcome to the Seven Forums! marossity

That's one reg value you have to keep for sure. The registry wouldn't be the place to start with anyways.

If 7 came preinstalled moving the recovery partition wasn't a good idea to start with since that is configured to repair and even restore the preinstalled Windows and offsets aby factory recovery options. Once you make changes to partitioning on any drive the checkdisk utility will fire up automatically being a builtin tool found in Windows itself.

You could try running the "chkdsk /r" command in the command prompt to manually start up the checkdisk utility while booted in Windows with the repair switch added. That may fix the problem and result in Windows creating a log showing that.

The even faster approach would be simply right clicking on the drive's icon while having a W.Explorer window or Computer open and selecting the Tools tab to run the "Check Now" option seen in that tab as a button to click. The attached image shows how that looks.

Plan on jumping on Win 7 RC Tuesday (prob 64 bit, see other thread). Trying to see if I should worry about my second data partition getting messed up if I install the RC onto my OS partition.

My current drive is a 1 TB black caviar partioned 200/800.

I plan on installing the RC onto the 200gb OS partition by doing a clean wipe using whatever built in method Win 7 RC employs in the installation process. My current OS install is Win XP Pro SP3 and is only about 3 weeks old.

I assume I will just get an option in the custom installation to install Win 7 on my OS partition and I can just select an move on, with no impact to my 800gb data partition, right?

Also, would there be any benefit, really, to shrinking one of my paritions and dual-booting my XP and Win 7 RC? I would only have the XP for emergency backup in case Win 7 RC failed me. I know you can have XP virtualization, but that wouldn't really help a show-stopper in Win 7.

Answer:Installing Win 7 on partioned drive

Choose Custom installation (not Upgrade, obviously). The next screen presents the partition layout - highlight the XP partition, click the button on the lower right to get the more advanced options, and delete that partition. Some would say just formatting it is fine, but I disagree: to do this correctly and without any possible chance of something going awry, delete the current OS partition completely. It won't affect the other one, the data partition, so wipe it out totally.

When it's gone, the installer will identify that as Unallocated space at that point - make sure THAT selection is highlighted and then click Next. You do NOT need to make the partition, and it's best that you don't, just select/highlight the now Unallocated space and click Next.

Windows 7 may pop up a box saying it will use some reserved space for itself which is perfectly normal. It will shave off 100-200MB at the very beginning of the drive, put some boot/recovery files there, and then it'll use the rest of the unallocated space for Windows 7, partitioned and formatted as NTFS automagically.

That's about it.

You can edit, so can I... hehe

Honestly, with XPM in Windows 7 coming... screw dual booting unless you're doing it for some reason like gaming and you must have bare metal native performance with XP, that's it. My apologies if this comes across as a silly question.

A while back I reverted a Vista system to XP on a secondary HD, which named itself N:

I did have plans to get a dual boot working but have no need to, so I would like to format the C drive, to remove any confusion my PC may have about having 2 operating systems installed (Even though it only uses XP). The C drive also has a recovery partition D, as its a HP system. I no longer need this and would like the drive to be whole again.

When I try to just format the drive in File Explorer, there is an error "Windows was unable to complete the format". I'm guessing this is some kind of safeguard in Windows. So I guess I need to boot to DOS using a boot disk? I have no floppy drive, can I make a DOS boot disk on a CD? And do I need to include a CD driver or something to get it to recognise it or is that all in the BIOS these days?

Also, would there be any risk to my system, having a clean C drive? The other option I'm considering is to install XP on the C, swap the data off the N then format it, so my drive structure is normal. But concerned the 2 installs of XP would conflict. My problem is I have about 1.5TB of data to shuffle around and only 1TB worth of external storage (1.5TB space between the two internal drives), so I can't just clean the lot and start again. Unless I buy another external I suppose ... *insert whinge about how slow it is to copy to and from*

Answer:Partioned Hard Drive Question

Your registry points to those files in quiestion.

MAYBE....just maybe, if you did a registry backup of your HKLM\Software and backed up each and every game name you installed....

Never tried it, doubt it will work

The best case is to save your save games, and reinstall....

System :
Microsoft Windows XP

Version 2002
Service Pack 2

AMD Athlon Processor
1.00GHz 248 MB of RAM

I am going to re-install windows and I have a Compaq Presario computer that has a C and D drive.

Is there any way I can make my computer one drive or is there a plus side to having two drives?

D is listed as system_sav
The files on it are:
Folder 34a786935f2ed2 date modified 9/13/2002
CPQDRV 12/2/2000
CPQS 12/2/2000
DATA 1/1/1998
Q2 DIR FILE 2/25/2002
W21.SKU SKU FILE 5/9/2001

Could I safely delete these files?

Should I leave them and just reinstall to C drive?

I thought I read somewhere that Compaq had portioned drives and it was a waste of space. Any and all input will be appreciated.

I have reinstalled Windows before, have done backup of files I want to save and am doing the reinstall to get rid of a few things and fix some things that are going on…. My fault for messing with registry… probably…. Live and learn.

C has total size of 32.9GB with 18.2GB free and D has 4.33GB with 2.44GB free.

If you need any more info for suggestions please advise and I will respond as soon as possible. Once I finish back up of my photos… I will be ready to re install Windows.

Thanks SO much.

Please help on how to or in any way I can recover those files as much as possible... please....If I understand you correctly, you have either a retail, or an OEM version of Windows XP and you used that to reformat the drive and reinstall XP after Windows 7 failed. Although reformatting effectively removes the data envelop, the data itself remains in place and can sometimes be recovered with specialised software. However, such programs are not free and are not guaranteed to work. Have a look at this one: How do I recover the files from formatted hard drives?

Then delete your partition and format using NTFS.
You should be ok after that.
If you get error while formatting then your HDD is toast. ( I don't think you will get an error though )

Answer:Can I remove partioned volumes safley on C?

Download Easeus Partition Manager free here. This will identify Linux and Windows partitions. Use it to remove Linux partitions and expand your C: partition. Your Restore partition will almost certainly show as Fat and not NTFS and will be able to remain here it is. I have used this program on several occasions and find it to be excellent, but any partioning software does advise backing up important files before using it. I will say that I have never lost data with it yet.

hi, i recently bought and installed a new internal harddrive. using my old drive and its win7 installation i downloaded my digital copy of win7 and its installer and used that installer to do a fresh win7 install on the new drive. once that was done my old drive still had boot priority but during boot i was given the option to boot to either OS, depending on the drive. that all works fine as-is: i can boot to my new install, which is where i'm posting this from, and i can boot to my old install with no problems. the only problem comes in when i change boot priority in the bios.
when the old drive isn't the boot drive, or when it's disconnected altogether, the bios can't detect an OS on the new drive. how would this happen? is the new install's MBR partitioned into the old drive? i've looked into running win7's repair tool and bootrec.exe, since i have a spare burn of my digital win7 lying around (that i only avoided using for the original install because my dvd drive is old and flaky), but haven't done it. what are my options? i'd format and reinstall but i'm worried of it happening a second time and i spent yesterday installing and setting up firefox and steam and enough stuff that i'd like to avoid that if possible. i'll do it if i have to, of course, but i'd really appreciate some advice.
and sorry about the typo in the title

Use the startup repair tool. You may have to run this 3 times before it finds and repairs everything.

I just replaced my HD with WD 1T, reloaded & updated Vista, installed Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade on Dell Inspiron 530. Everything is working fine. But I don't recall seeing an option to partion the drive; everything is installed on C:
I created a D: partion of 100M in Disk Management. My question is can I move the proper OS and System Restore files into this partion at this point? Or is it too late? Is it worth doing?

Answer:Windows 7 Upgrade didn't install partioned HD

Why did you install Vista first? I hope you didn't run an inferior Upgrade install from Vista when you can much more easily get the preferred clean install by just booting Win7: Clean Install with a Upgrade Windows 7 Version

I would do it over following the illustrated steps in the tutorial unless you're already attached to the install. If so, format the 100mb System Reserved partition you created Primary, remove the drive letter, mark it Active, then boot the Win7 DVD Repair console to Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times to write the System boot files to it and have the Repair console placed on the F8 advanced boot tools menu.

Hi, On our other machine we have a 70 GB hard drive. It is partioned C: 20 GB and D: 50. All the program files are on C. When I try to defrag C I get the message "Volume C has only 4% free space available for use by Disk requires at least 15%". I uninstalled some inessential programs and got it up to 9%. In my wifes user account there is one folder My Pictures with 2.9GB. Can I move that onto the D partion to create the needed space? If so how do you move it and still be able to access it from the My Docs on her users account. Thanks for any advice. John

I probably already know the answer to my question, and I don't think I like it!!

Have an hp t380a, looked like a good system after my last homebuilt system (with help from an IT friend) had little glitches. It has a 160 g hard drive, so I purchased Partition Magic (silly me) on the suggestion of the HP help line, since I wanted it partioned. Since then I have not been able to install many updates for the hardware, some of which is hp hardware. The one I am worried about is the keyboard/mouse (wireless). I haven't yet installed SP2 because I am worried about the driver conflicts.

So, does anyone have any suggestions about getting these updates to install, or is my only option (if I want SP2) to buy another hard drive, so that I can have various applications separate from my main hard drive, and reformat the current one so it conforms with the original hp specifications?

Thanks for your help.

Answer:hp computer, partioned drive, unable to install updates...

You might want to call HP back. Often times, these companies keep a partition installed for drivers or your bios. I wish I was there, I could probably figure it out, but as of right now I am not sure.

so as this is for a very novice user, my other half, I set it up such that the
all pointed to the E: Drive
which was easy to do by right clicking, properties, move, then when i installed new programs like Itunes it used E for the library
and the card reader copied to E: pictures

Now I would like everything on her account, that shes likely to use

I did not see how I could move them

when I booted the pc it said installing device drive software, and said, device is ready to use, I go to my computer, and it ain't there, do I have to set it as secondary in bios?

Open up Disk Management (in the admin tools control panel), it should show up in there. I'd delete all the partitions and create 1 new one that incorporates the whole disk. Then format as NTFS.

I have two 250GB hard drive in my pc and I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP2. It's running on an Abit motherboard with Athlon 64 dual core 4400+ CPU. I got the computer from a friend and decided to do a clean install so I deleted the previous partions and made a new one. It went through the whole formatting process fine then went through the windows setup. It then did an automatic reboot but right after POST it gave me an error message. It said Trap followed by 0000005c ==============EXCEPTION=========================== and a series of hexdecimal messages afterworsd. I've done this twice and had the same problem and I just wanted to know if you guys knew anything about this?

Answer:Installing Win XP Pro SP2 on two 250GB HDD

Greetings gfx dude, Welcome to TSF!

Firstly, you only need to install the Operating System one ONE of the HDD's not both of them.
The second HDD can be connected as a "Slave" and can be used to 'save' everything that you download, plus emails and other data, such as music etc.
I suggest that you check the CD for scratches and marks; wipe it very gently from the centre to the edges with a lint free cloth.
To give you the best chance of getting Windows? installed without hassles, such as those you are experiencing, is to completely wipe the HDD with Darik's Boot N Nuke.
Wiping the HDD this way will completely erase everything off the HDD and take it back to a RAW unformatted state, as if it had just come out of the factory.

Just so that you do not forget anything when doing the installation, please read this...

The Windows? XP Installation Check List.

1. The Windows? XP SP2-CD (naturally)

2. Darik's Boot N Nuke (Click the coloured Link).

3. Please read this guide.

4. The Motherboard CD that contains all the necessary Drivers etc.

A couple of tips...
a. Darik's Boot N Nuke will take about 4? hours to completely wipe the Drive; however, this will vary depending on how big the Drive is. (That estimate is for a 80Gb HDD).

b. When you get to Figure 7 in 'The Guide', you can create more than one partition here by simply telling Windows? how big you want it. Should you do decide to create an extra parti... Read more

Question: 250gb hd problem

Hitachi 250gb hd, was working fine, everything was ok. It was split into two partitions a 128Gb clip, and a 104 gb clip. The 128gb clip had information on it. Now the drive is recognized in bios properly. When it boots to windows it comes up as 8gb, and has information on it, but I can't access it. One more thing the drive now says fat, when originialy it was ntfs. Under manager, The drive says it is split at 138g and 104 gb. Any ideas? when I run a drive test the drive says it has a bad cable, I swapped the cable out three or four times, to no avail.

I think I have it all listed, oh windows xp home, installed on it's own drive.

Answer:250gb hd problem

Has nothing to do with drivers or Spyware, it is more of a Bios issue. What is the manufacturer and model of the computer that this drive is in? Also, do you have SP2 installed for XP?

The drive manufacturers reckon a kilo is 1000 (reasonable, I suppose), but the rest of the computer world regards it as 1024.So a 250Gb drive is 250/1.024/1.024/1.024 = 233Gb.

I have also used 200GB external drive before on the same laptop..
all of my previous hdd were western digital....

The problem is:
I wanted to format (partition) the hdd... but the computer said that the capacity (unformatted) is around 2 TB
i tried to format it as one partition, it wont do it...
I tried to minimize the capacity to an acceptable (close to real) level (set it to 230Gb) but it wont do it...

I tried to format it using FAT32, and it worked but to a maximum of 200Gb, it is ok... but the problem is that i can only use 10 GB after that the harddrive gives an error (write-protected)...

1- have anyone used Maxtor drives before as externals???
2- Have any one came across this problem before ???
3- Will it work in a normal PC or not?? (just to format it)... because getting a pc in here is quite difficult

Question: Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

I just bought a new deskstar 250Gb Hdd which I am trying to install in my Compaq Pressario S3190UK

I know its got to be set to slave but I wasnt sure if I should set it up as a
16 head, a 15 head , 32 byte clip or auto spin dissable and all of those choises are available on the drive

I went for 16 heads and booted up

In " my computer " the new drive does not appear ( I still see all my original drives there) yet in System/Hardware /device manager it shows up under drives and on clicking its properties it says this device is working properly

Without seeing it in the " my computer folder " I cant really format or partition it so I then tried partition magic
That saw it fine and reported its size correctly . I told it to create an ntfs partition and use all the drive . It changed color as it should and all that was left was to click on make changes now but when I did that it went straight back to tell me the new drive had no partitions created

I tried various combinations, of primary or logical drive , small or large partitions and fat or ntfs but always it refuses the last step of actually creating the partition .
What am I doing wrong ?

Answer:Deskstar 250Gb Hdd

First I will assume your drive is showing up as the full size in the bios and is corrrectly identified.

If you are using either xp or win2k. Go to disk management; start>run type in diskmgmt.msc and hit enter. See if your drive shows up there; it should be listed as disk1, disk0 will be the master drive. If it shows up there, you need to partition and format the drive. Right click on the drive and choose to create a partition; I like extended partitions for data / storage drives. After you create the partition, right click again and choose to create logical drive. You can make the entire drive one partition or organize it into say 3 logical drives; whatever you want. After you create the logical drive you will need to format them. Again right click on the logical drive and choose format. Use ntfs for your drive. In fact if you use partitions greater than 32 gig, fat32 is not even an option.

Just think about how you want it organized before you start.

Answer:XP won't format whole 250GB HD

Hi, if the version of Windows on the install CD pre-dates Service Pack 2, you will get this problem.

Microsoft added the ability for Windows to see hard drives bigger than 137 GB in Service Pack 1 (and Service Pack 2).

If you have access to another PC, download Service Pack 2 (which includes Service Pack 1 btw), and integrate it into your install source and burn a new CD from which you can install. You can find good instructions for doing that here:

You can download Service Pack 2 (full 266 MB package) from here:

As a workaround, you can create a partition less than 137 GB, install Windows, and then install Service Pack 2 and you will be able to access the rest of the hard drive. Then you can partition the rest from the Computer Management interface (right-click "My Computer" > Manage...)

I have looked through previos questions but couldn't find a solution. I have a 250g USB driven HDD not recognised by ny PC. I used the HDD on my TV so I think it will probably need reformatting. Answer:USB 250GB HDD not recognised by PC

I would recommend PartedMagic, it is now paid for software, but at only $4.99 it is a sound investment. Download it, burn it to a cd or put it on a USB stick and boot from it.
Have the suspect drive connected and PartedMagic should be able to see it and it will enable you to format the drive, whatever the existing filesystem is.

Hello, I'm hoping I can find a solution to my problem here as I couldn't find one elsewhere on the net.
I have a laptop and currently have a 120GB hard drive in an external enclosure. I have just bought a new 250GB hard drive and have installed it in the external enclosure. Though partitioning and formating the 120GB was a breeze, I've had nothing but problems with the new 250GB.
Below are the specs of what I'm working with. In both Partion Magic and in the Win2000 Disk Management, it correctly displays the 250GB drive (233GB). Regardless of which program I use (ie. Partion Magic, Win Disk Management, command line FORMAT) I get problems.
Generally, what will happen is it will partition fine. Then it will begin to the formatting process (VERY slowly) and then either throw an error either during or at the end of the process. And this is when I try to format a very small partition (ie. 100MB). I have successfully formated a 10MB partition. On a large partition (ie. 30GB) the format process will start but will not progress.
The only two things I can think of is that the drive is faulty, or because I am booting my OS from a floppy there is some sort of recognition problem.
I can't run the diagnosis software from Maxtor because that requires the drive to be installed internally.
So any help to this problem will be greatly appreciated.
Additionally, how long should it generally take to format the 250GB drive in its entirety?

Hello, I just ran out of room on my 500GB HDD, Its a 7200 RPM and I like the speed of it. I started looking for a new HDD when I came across an 60GB SSD. I never thought of buying an SSD before. Now I can't decide if I should get the SSD or the HDD ( same price) I need a new drive for linux, but my current drive only has 3GB left. I was going to partition 30GB to linux and keep 30 for Windows. Then transfer my OS to the remaining 30GB, that would free some room. I am a gamer so I need alot of room for games. If I get the 250GB HDD then I would have alot of room for more games and linux. But then I would not be able to boot Windows 7 in seconds. What should I get?

My specs:
Intel core i5 2500K ( stock speed )
MSI - H61M-P20(G3)
8GB of Vengeance DDR3 RAM @ 1333 CAS 7
GTX 550 Ti 1 GB ( Overclocked )
1 500GB 7200 Western Digital Caviar Blue HDD
500W PSU.

Answer:SSD 60GB or HDD 250GB?

Go with an SSD. If you choose the 60GB SSD, you will have just enough space for the OS and a Office Suite and a few other apps before you start to run out of space. If you can afford it, go with a minimum of 128GB SSD as your primary drive, then wipe your 500GB mechanical drive and use as a storage drive.

I've been looking at some of the features in Samsung Magician, and ran the Benchmark test twice. Both times I got very high scores, above the max listed in the program for all 4 tests. I have the drive set to MAXIMUM RELIABILITY. Just wondering about the scores reliability.

Scores in Parentheses are Samsung 's listed maximum high:

Sequential Read
549 mb (540)
Seq write
532mb (520)
Random read
97442 (97000)
Random write
70189 (66000)

Answer:Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250gb

Benchmarks are artificial at best [and a benchmark from the mfg is tailored to that particular piece of hardware] I would think you would get different results using a another benchmark program such as ATTO.

In short do not put too much emphasis on any given benchmark. Modern ssd drives are reliable and it should last for quite a while so I would not worry about the drive.

hi ,everybody i have a dell d600 laptop with a 40 gb harddrive and 2 gb memory . my question is i am trying to install a 250 gb harddrive ,but the laptop doesn't recognise the drive ,so i can't install windows on it . i even bought vista .the laptop won't recognise the drive .help

Answer:250GB Hdd Not Recognized

What do you mean the laptop won't recognize the 250GB drive? Do you mean in the BIOS? When trying to install Windows? You can try to download a linux LiveCD like Knoppix or Damn Samll Linux and boot from that (F9 or F12 at the Dell BIOS) and see if it sees it. If so, format with QTParted or Fdisk and then try Windows again. Maybe the drive is bad.

Let me know if this helps.

Hi. I need advice on setting up  a M.2 SSDriveMy Laptop is a ENVY X360 Convertible  Model: m6-w105dxI installed a Samsung EVO M.2 250GB but I really can't make it work.It is  neither recognised by bios nor by OS (windows) or any disk management software (samsung magician or intel rapid storage technology, so I have no clues how to solve this.Samsung 850 EVO M.2 seems to be right choise cosidering my laptop specificationsI contacted HP support and they  told me:  maybe is a loose contact between ssd conector and mainboard slot , I've double cheked that and all seems OK. in place and securedThen they told me to disable secure boot and enable legacy boot option @ bios configuration.... no results after that... SSD keeps unseen by my laptop bios and OS...Any expert advice or any success M.2 SSD installation experience would be really nice and appreciated...I've asked on other threads in this forum with no luck..thank in advance for any help on this.RegardsAle

I have a 250GB Maxtor Hard Drive that I decided to convert to an external drive when I got my new Dell (bad idea). It worked great for about a month, then one day I get an 'ambulance-like' beeping alarm from the external. I'm relatively certain its telling me the hard drive is dead... most likely from insufficient cooling in the cheap external HD case I bought. But, I dont have any experience with hard drive alarms so i thought I'd ask. Does this alarm mean this drive is dead for good?

Answer:Dead 250GB Maxtor HD... I think

I would check your documentation from your ext. drive case and see what the sound meant. You can always plug it into an IDE cable to check it.

I've got 2 250GB HDD's, I know FAT32 won't work on, but I really don't want to use NTFS. I run Windows and Linux, so having 500GB of HDD space that Linux finds hard to handle isn't really my best option.

Is there another file system or way around it that I can run on Linux and Windows without to much trouble?

ive had the hdd for about a year now and its been working fine, i only used approx 1/3 of the capacity. But the other day my m8 was installing Windows 7 on his laptop, so he filled my hdd up with all his backup, and their wasnt any more space left, the next day i plugged it in & the white light was flashing, but i could not go inside it, it just appears as a "Local Disk (F)" on My computer, and the same on my m8's, (and if u double click it, then a sign appears stating that (F) is nt accesible because of an I/O error). oh and i recently changed it from FAT to RAW cuz it wouldnt allow me to move more than 2gb at a time, dnt knw if that mite be important, any thoughts cuz i reeli need the data....?

Would there be any conflict with this unit and W7.

I looked at this unit and it appears to me that it would be ideal for my laptop. I need about 120gb for backup of my C & D drives. I'm not sure if this unit is the best and find no place to compare it to other comparable products on the market.

If anyone has used this product I would ask your opinion of its performance and one other question. How long does it take for the first download of all files.

Answer:Seagate Replica 250gb with W7

If your only use is for disaster recovery, then this drive will do the job...That being said, I would recommend the purchase a large external drive that can also be used for storing individual files/folders...

1st off sorry if this has be told before,

I have a 250gb external hdd which now only show 100mb.

It was an old hdd out of an old 7 laptop (which got accidently dropped and insurance replaced) I asked for the hdd back, which when I got it back was fine and working well, I did a quick format and not used it for over a year,

come to use it now to store movies and pictures on and it say volume 100mb?

How do I get the rest back?

Answer:250gb hdd showing only 100mb

Can you see it in Disk Management? (right click on My Computer and select Manage, then go to Storage > Disk Management). Disk Management (What It Is and How To Use It)
Is it showing the drive? Does it show the total disk size?

Just purchased a new Samsung SP2514 250 gig hdd and XP can only see 32239mb.

Tried using samsung's drive overlay to install xp, but gave up + uninstalled it -(the drive overlay).

I booted from the Xp cd + installed but XP only sees 32....gig's.

I have enabled big LBA by using EnableBigLba from to no avail.

From searching through the forums, I see that a BIOS update may be necessary.

Do I also need to update my motherboard + chipset?

If so, are reliable updates available free on the net?

Any step-by-step instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Thx in advance

My 4gb USB pendrive appears as only 250mb (EDITED NOW )! What can I do? I have tried using the format option on right click...

Answer:My 4gb USB pendrive appears as only 250gb!

Heh, your complainaing about 246 free gig?

Ok I know you mean meg...

Well I would look in the disk manager in the control panel and see what the partitioning on it is. it may be partitioned wrong. You can delete and repartition it to the full 4 gig. then reformat it again.

This is just what is says. A fresh win 10 install on a new SSD. Do not explain to me about cloning.

To date I've upgraded the BIOS (UEFI) on a ASUS P67 Performance Gen3 motherboard. I've changed the SATA Mode to AHCI. I can see the drive in the BIOS.

The Windows installer the page where it lists the drive partitions. I only see one drive partio

Drive 0 Partition 1 239.9GB 232.8 GB Primary

I get the error
Windows can't be installed on drive 0 particion 1. (Show Detailes)

The New button is greyed out and when I select next I get

We couldn't create a new partition or locate an existing one. For more information, see the Setup log files.

Answer:New WIN 10 Install on new SAMSUNG EVO 250GB SSD

Hello hiltonr92 and welcome to the forums. See if this will help

Are you installed in UEFI Mode? If so, when you boot from the USB drive use the entry that says UEFI and the name of your USB. If not in UEFI, boot from the name of your USB without UEFI in front of it. Delete all partitions on the drive until it says unallocated and then click the 'NEW" button. The installer will create all the necessary partitions. I hope that helps.

Hi, I have Lenovo S500 and after I install the OS, the partition OEM Reserved is hidden in Windows and I want to use this because it's to large(it's not a few GB... it's almost 250GB, and i think that it's too much).I want to know why is created this partition? What's his function? Sorry for my bad english. Thanks!

Answer:Lenovo OEM Reserved 250GB

Hi Rxgamer,
Welcome to Lenovo Community!
I understand your concern, but let me inform you these partitions contain recovery image and Drivers/Default Applications. By deleting the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) partition the system will loose its ability to "Factory Reset/ OKR (One Key Recovery)" of the system.
Do post us back for further queries.

I have a 250gb Maxtor Diamondmax10 SATA harddrive. In windows it only reads/writes up toe 233gb, it shows that thats its limit. In everest and every other diagnostic tool (hell even BIOS!) they all say that its 250GB. Any idea how I can get my other 17GB back??

Answer:250gb HD only gets 233gb on Windows!

Upgrading Service Pack might help.

Also goto disk managment and see if theres any unallocated space.

Hi, Does anyone have any experience of this USB External hard drive? I think my Western Digital 'My Book' is going to pack up soon, so need to find a replacement. Yesterday i asked about a Buffalo drive and got some positive responses, but this one looks good too (and tiny in size). Thanks - Tony

Answer:Seagate 250gb FreeAgent Go/2.5

I use a Buffalo drive however, and it's extremely reliable - the only irritation is the incessant humming noise the drive motor makes.

Hey this is my first post to this site so please feel free to nag more info out of me if i dont put enough onMy XP Pro recently got a 250 gb Seagate internal hard drive installed into it, yet it takes around 10 to 15 minutes for it to boot.So i decided in the end to have it as a secondary hard drive and have my 80 gb hard drive as a primary. yet when my 250 gb reaches over 91.9 gb full, it will not load anymore data, instead crash and say that i have lost all data that i was moving. If anyone knows whats wrong or even advice, it will be well appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Answer:Boot Problem XP PRO 250GB

How is the drive formatted ? ?NTFS/FAT32 ?2 things you can check: First in device manager find the IDE controller and then the drive andd right clik it and select Properties...Report back what mode it is in. If it's PIO mode this will account for the extreme slowness.2nd DLoad and run Seatools diagnostics on that drive to determine if it's healthy or not.The file is used to create a bootable floppy/CD so you can run it even if Windows won't run.Report back with your findings...

Graphic Interface Version: AGP version 2.0

(did I miss anything?)

I appologize in advance for the long read.

This computer came with only a 10GB Seagate drive. It has less than 300MB left of unused memory, so I tried installing a 250GB Maxtor. It is only recognized as 30GB in the BIOS. I don't understand this because I have WinXP SP2 and LBA is enabled in the BIOS -
Not only that, but I have another 300GB Seagate that I want to install as a slave (I had previously installed this one as a slave to the 10GB but had the same problem with only 64GB being recognized.
I don't understand why my BIOS isn't recognizing it at it's full capacity since I have the latest version of BIOS and LBA is indeed enabled (I thought SP2 was supposed to correct this problem).

My hope is that someone out there can walk me through this step by step (from erasing the disk to installation) because I've been working on this thing all day long and nothing I've tried seems to work. The 10GB drive has to go. I want to install the 250GB drive as my master, copy the 10GB drive to it (I have Casper XP 3.0 for this purpose), and then install the 300GB drive ... Read more

Did the Maxtor not come with a setup disc .....?

Bought a new 250 g hd for my box. I want to install xp pro. I am at the stage where it shows 1 partition at 131 gb

Xp pro disk in cd bay, boot disk in floppy.

Any help would be appreciated

Answer:New 250gb hd 131 showing? Partition Help??

Plain-Jane XP by default will only recognize drives up to 132GB. If you create an SP2 slipstreamed CD using autostreamer, it will recognize the full drive upon install. Or, complete your install, update to SP2 and then use the "diskmgmt.msc" command in the "run" line to format the remaining hard drive as a second partition.

Hi to allI have just installed Maxtor 250GB HD into my P4 PC. Cmos bios reports the HD as 250GB during POST and Win XP C: drive properties reports that capacity is 250GB and used space is 134GB!!The only thing on the drive is the OS (winXP) it was brand new I partitioned/ formatted it using my XP cd. If I look at the properties individually on C: drive (windows, program files, docs and settings, etc) they add up to approx 1.5GB but C: properties is 134GB?any suggestions as to why XP is reporting the use incorrectly and a possible fix much appreciated.TIA

Answer:250GB HD showing too big used space

I recently installed a pair of 160gb drives and found on the Maxtor site that in order for the true capacity to be recognised by Windows you need 2 things[otherwise it only recognises up to 137gb];1 - to be running Windows SP12 - to run the Maxtor Big Drive Tool[available from Maxtor support website]

My 30gb harddrive in my computer died a few weeks ago and a scoured the stores for a new hd. I found a Maxtor 250gb hard drive on sale at Fry's for $140. It was a great deal for the space but I have some questions on it's performance. It's P-ATA 133 with an 8mb cache,a seek time of 9.3ms and rotates at 7,200 RPM. I do a lot of multiasking with Everquest and just general gaming so my pagefile is huge and constantly used. I also do some video editing.

My real question is how does it rate for my needs. Should I look at buy another smaller hard drive to use as my main or keep use this as my only hard drive?

I have the hard drive split into two partitions right now and am wondering which partion actually is on the outside of the platters so I can properly put the pagefile in it's place? Thanks in advance.

Answer:Some questions about a new 250gb harddrive

I have the drive. Its currently the only drive, and I use a separate partition for the pagefile, but don't see (and didn't expect) a performance improvement. I have a rig with the swapfile on separate drives and it was noticably faster. So I would definately recommend a keeping the old drive - wherever you put the OS, keep the swapfile on the other one.
